  But obviously Blockbuster music and video doesn't exist anymore

  because now you can live stream movies, television videos and

  all that through YouTube as well as various sources.

  So those companies kind of went out of business.

  But they were fun, weren't they? You remember the days when you

  went into like some kind of, you know, video shop.

  You look for what you want and you see all the other people

  standing around trying to find their favorite fucking Disney

  movie or Friday or something like that with Ice Cube.

  Chris Tucker. So today I thought I would I'd

  talk about why it is that I'm into so many different genres of

  music and how I think it helped me musically and helped me as a
• 4:57
  person. I really do believe music is the

  universal language that can touch the hearts of everybody

  out there. It depends on what kind of music

  it is though, I I suppose. Well, the genre actually.

  I think that rock music has more umphs to be able to reach people
• 5:19
  than something like rap, because rap unfortunately
• 5:24
  stereotypically has been used to kind of promote and endorse
• 5:29
  violence as well as misogynistic behavior towards women and all
• 5:35
  that. I'm completely aware of that and
• 5:37
  I acknowledge it, even though I have written quite a few rap
• 5:41
  tunes in my time and worked with people and collaborated helping
• 5:46
  people. Either I write the lyrics for
• 5:49
  them, I create the music or do both or have somebody come in
• 5:55
  and actually do something to something I sampled or put
• 5:59
  together. All right.

  So as many of you probably know from listening to videos about
• 6:05
  my personal life or listen to my radio station, I originally was
• 6:09
  born and grew up in Saint Louis and I lived in South Saint Louis
• 6:17
  where it's very, very few white people lived in the area at the
• 6:23
  time. I was surrounded by by what
• 6:27
  people would refer to as the black community.
• 6:31
  And this was my first real introduction to music.
• 6:37
  My father, however, he added a little bit to the mix because he
• 6:42
  listened to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, that kind of material.
• 6:48
  And my mother at some point in time got me a record of Michael
• 6:51
  Jackson, Thriller. So I got the, I remember
• 6:55
  listening to Beat It and Billie Jean and and Thriller with the
• 7:01
  zombies and shit. And I thought that that was
• 7:03
  pretty bad ass. But most of the music I heard on
• 7:07
  a consistent basis, whenever I would be heading to school or
• 7:11
  getting on the bus and shit like that or just hanging out at
• 7:16
  school, because people back then, they would blast music.

  They would blast something called boom boxes.
• 7:22
  People would carry these big fucking box like stereos on
• 7:25
  their shoulders walking around and you'd hear the you know the
• 7:33
  and you know the fucking bass is constantly pumping.

  Well, that's how I got into I started listening to guys like
• 7:43
  Dre and WO Ice Cube iced tea, the body count.

  He ended up going from rap into like kind of a garage metal type
• 7:56
  of scenario with this music. Very iced tea was weird to me

  because whenever I was younger he was basically a full on hater
• 8:10
  to the cops and then later on in his life he ends up doing like
• 8:15
  where he's a cop on law and order I believe is what it's
• 8:21
  called. So it's weird he goes from cop
• 8:24
  hating to that and originally he called himself a pimp of the
• 8:28
  streets and shit like that. It was it was weird.

  And of course, I was familiar with white people who were
• 8:36
  attempting to rap like Vanilla Ice.

  It was considered teasy. It was like a parody of it.

  People like his music, though. They like that Ice, Ice baby
• 8:47
  then and then and then. And I don't know if many of you
• 8:50
  knew that, but that riff that he used for that was actually
• 8:53
  ripped off of one of my favorite classical rock bands, Queen.

  So yeah. Yeah, a lot of a lot.

  Of really cool rap songs, samples some of the bass lines

  as well as refs from bands like Anthrax, Theicide and Entombed
• 9:14
  Cannibal. Corpse, things like that.

  So back to what I was talking about.

  So every day I'm listening to this and when I would get on the

  bus. A lot of the black folks,

  teenagers and kids and all that, they like to do something was

  called beatboxing and freestyling.

  Beatbox means that you're making like spit noises and shit or to
• 9:43
  mimic a beat, you know, you know, shit like that.

  And then you, you know, do a bunch of rhyming to it.

  Well, when I listen to this kind of shit, I didn't really

  consider it music in the sense like Pink Floyd.

  When you listen to something like Michael Jackson or Pink

  Floyd and then you listen to people spitting on a bus and

  then going on about shooting people in the Dome and and
• 10:13
  cracking the motherfucker. Over the head.

  And, you know, busting out somebody's lip, somebody's going

  to pay for the blood on my lip. You don't really value it the
• 10:24
  same way you would if you were listening to The Wall or Dark
• 10:27
  Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin, you know?

  Well, I did learn though that there is a skill to it.

  It does require fucking skill to to rap one.

  It's got to sound hard ass. You can't, you know, do

  something like the cat and fiddle the plate and spoon the

  cow jumped over the moon. That's more near lazy.

  It rhymes, but it sounds dumb. It doesn't sound hard ass and

  shit. So you got to bring up Compton,

  you know, Saint Louis, you know, murder, Central murder, cap of

  the world. Yeah, that kind of shit.

  And you got to say motherfucker, a lot people like that.

  They like it whenever it's completely derogatory and

  absolutely fucking offensive and it doesn't apologize for itself.

  However, gangsta rap kind of, it kind of slowed down in the, I'd

  say probably the early 90s. And then shit started to get

  more into R&B hip hop where people started singing all
• 11:39
  pretty and nice and there wasn't as much rap anymore.

  I mean, there were guys like the Beastie Boys where they, they
• 11:47
  added kind of a neat influence. Rage Against the Machine.

  They basically what they did was they took rap music and then
• 11:58
  they added kind of an alternative metal and rock
• 12:01
  twist. To it and a lot of bands
• 12:04
  nowadays like Linkin Park and Papa Roach.

  I don't know if any of you have ever heard a song Suffocation.

  Tear my life into pieces. They picked all that up

  originally from guys like the Beastie Boys.

  Basically it's a hybrid compilation or collaboration of

  rap music and then adding kind of some rock chords to it.

  The first real successful song that ever came out that dropped

  like a Hard Rock beat to some rap music was Aerosmith with Run

  DMC. Yeah, Run DMC or something like

  that. It's been a while since I heard
• 12:57
  that shit, but I think it was. It was a.

  Cover of an original classic by Aerosmith called Walk This Way

  So, yeah, all throughout my life, I I listened to that.

  It wasn't until I got around 12, between 10 and 12 years old, I

  started visiting my grandmother more and she lived up in the

  country just a ways out from Saint Louis.

  You go out from the city and it starts getting really in the

  country, out in Missouri. And then eventually my mother

  got sick and I had to live with my grandmother for a little bit.

  And I would eventually end up in foster homes and residential
• 13:52
  homes where I was around all kinds of different kids and all
• 13:55
  kinds of different styles. But while I was with my
• 13:57
  grandmother, she liked to listen to gospel and country music, and

  a lot of it was fucking depressing sounding.

  It definitely wasn't upbeat and crazy and filled with energy and
• 14:12
  action like rap music had, where it was kind of telling a story.

  But country music did tell a story.

  But the story was always fucking sad.

  Wasn't about victory or whipping ass or any of that kind of shit

  or taking over the streets or building your own empire and all
• 14:30
  that. Like Scarface, it was, you know,

  blame it all on my roots. I showed up in Boots and ruined

  her black tie affair. You know about somebody cheating

  on you or are you fucking wife running off with the dog and

  taking your fucking house and money?

  That's I used to joke with my friends.

  I said, what do you call it when you combine rap and country

  together? And they said what?

  Let's say crap, I was joking, obviously, because I like some

  forms of country music. I like Kenny Rogers.

  One of my favorite piano ballads and a music by him was Lady.

  He covered a Lionel Richie song. You know Lionel Richie?

  to 50 years old, my voice is not as, it's not as good as it used

  to be, that's for sure. I really nowadays, if I try to

  sing a song or try to do shit, I really have to drink a lot of

  can't hit the octaves that I used to.

  Some of my older songs I'm not able to pull them off.

  Hopefully because of it. That's one of the reasons why

  I've been having a lot of other singers come in, younger people

  and and all that. So that's the the issue I find

  myself in now. I can sing, but I can pretty

  much pull off country or pull off even like a basic type of

  rap song, but nothing to, you know, that a gangster would

  even though she's never taken her music seriously or whatever

  I told her in the past when she and I used to talk, although she

  talented vocally than myself and my brother put together.

  My brother's a screamer and a growler, and every once in a

  while he'll sing in a way where you can like, understand the

  lyrics. And unfortunately, that's the

  way a lot of thrash metal is. You can't make out a lot of the

  shit that's being said because there's a lot of screaming, a

  lot of guttural growls and shit like that.

  But my sister's capable of singing songs like Elton John

  and Bon Jovi and and fucking Fred Mercury.

  I wouldn't say that she was always spot on when it came to

  Fred Mercury. That's a hard motherfucker to

  sing like, but she she could pull it off.

  I listen to Michael Jackson a million times and I can sing

  back some of the lyrics, but I don't sound anything like

  from her before her husband passed away, she did and showed

  pieces and actually sing some shit.

  apparently she's. She's going to attempt to do

  something with it, but I don't want to give too much

  information out and she also asked me not to give out the

  but my brother, as well as my sister and some of my friends

  and family members, they don't want.

  It's not that they have any disrespect towards me or

  anything, they loved the shit out of me and would fucking take

  Tried to drag me through the mud.

  find themselves in a spot where they sell their music and then

  their music can be used for everything and they've got no

  say. So like it could be used in the

  fucking commercials and Jingle if they want.

  You ever wonder why when you're watching TV and you hear a

  really cool fucking song on a commercial that's about Tampaxes

  and hemorrhoid cream and you're going, what?

  What the fuck? Why would they use that cool ass

  song for some shit like that? It's because the music company

  don't have no soul. They don't give a fuck what the

  song was about or what it meant. All they know is it's popular

  and it's got a good hook, so they sell their products on it.

  And that happens to a lot of people.

  Why? Because musicians, when they're

  working their way up and they're fucking starting out poor and

  some record company comes along and says, hey, you know that

  song that you wrote? I'll buy it from you for like

  $10,000. Songs worth millions of dollars.

  But the musician doesn't know that.

  The musician doesn't realize what they've got.

  All they know is what it took to make the fucking song and how it

  felt when they sung it. But a music industry, they have

  a vision, they're entrepreneurs. So they think about what what's

  going to happen with it and what they can do with it.

  And it's really sad because that's how a lot of musicians

  get sucked into a fucking hole because they want to pay their

  bills. They want to take care of the

  shit and they don't realize what their music's worth.

  And even if it's worth a lot of money, a lot of amateur bands

  find out right away that if they don't sell some of their music,

  then they're going to have to pretty much do a lot of self

  promotion. And that's a bitch.

  If you don't have a following and you don't have a lot of

  fucking fans, you got to reach out to advertisers who don't
• 25:55
  know your fucking name. They don't care.

  And maybe you do find an advertiser that knows a guy who

  works in the music industry or a woman and says, hey, you know,

  you do have, I like this song. I'll buy it from you.

  You know, do you mind if I, how much would it take for me to

  sell the rights to a professional musician that

  they're just happened to have agency with?

  So yeah, a lot of a lot of dumb shit.
