- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. I am going to
- 0:03be your host Tracie and we are so thankful that
- 0:05you guys tuned in today. And so if you are new
- 0:07to Fostering Faith, we are a podcast that does
- 0:10not have it all together, but we are figuring
- 0:11this out and we are fostering our faith as a
- 0:14community. And if you are a return listener,
- 0:16thank you so much for coming home this week.
- 0:17And today we're going to be stepping straight
- 0:19into episode two of our January series. And I
- 0:22want to warn you right up front. This is the
- 0:24one that's going to stretch you a little bit.
- 0:26And so in that first one, we talked about like
- 0:28more consistency and our fully habits. And this
- 0:30we're going to just kind of, we started to work
- 0:33out and now we're going to stretch a little bit,
- 0:35but in a good way, in a necessary way, because
- 0:37we know that stretching is such an important
- 0:38part of like health and wellness in the exact
- 0:42way that your spirit needs at the beginning of
- 0:44the year. And today we're going to be talking
- 0:46about discipline, desire, and doing it that way.
- 0:50And I want to start off with a simple truth.
- 0:52You're feeling like a terrible leader. Your feelings
- 0:58are a terrible leader. They are loud, they are
- 1:00dramatic, they are fluctuant in every minute
- 1:04they move. And half the time, they do not want
- 1:09what is best for you. Discipline is choosing
- 1:12what matters most over what feeling's easy right
- 1:16now. And so let me say it another way. Desire
- 1:19might start the journey, but discipline finishes
- 1:21it. You might desire into the sea with God, You
- 1:25might desire spiritual strength. You might desire
- 1:28a prayer life that feels alive. You might desire
- 1:33wisdom, consistency, holiness, peace, a better
- 1:38diet, a better body, a clearer mind. And all
- 1:43those our desires are good. They are real, and
- 1:47they are God -given. But desire alone will not
- 1:52foreign you. Discipline will. Paul writes in
- 1:571st Corinthians 927, I discipline my body and
- 1:59bring it into subjects. Why would Paul say that?
- 2:05Because spiritual maturity does not happen by
- 2:08accident. Intimacy with God does not grow by
- 2:12chance. And holiness is not automatic. And calling
- 2:16is not sustained by feelings. There will be days
- 2:21whenever you do not feel like praying. There
- 2:23will be mornings when you do not feel like opening
- 2:26your Bible. There will be nights when the last
- 2:29thing your flesh wants is to worship, surrender,
- 2:34or obey. And this is where Discipline steps in
- 2:37and says, I am not led by my emotions. I am led
- 2:43by the Spirit. And I am led by the Word. I am
- 2:46led by the calling of God placed on my life.
- 2:50Listen, you will never regret showing up for
- 2:53God. You will regret showing up for your emotion.
- 3:00But you always have the opportunity to say, you
- 3:05know what? Wait, stop. I show up for God. But
- 3:10if you always let your feelings lead you, they
- 3:15could lead you away from Him. Now, I want to
- 3:18give you three truths today about discipline
- 3:20and desire, because if you grab this in January,
- 3:24they will harry you through the entire year.
- 3:29Truth one. Discipline grows desire. We think
- 3:35desire is supposed to come first. We think that
- 3:38we need to feel spiritual before we actually
- 3:41are spiritual. But scripture teaches us the opposite.
- 3:44Jesus said, where your treasure is, there your
- 3:48heart will also be. That means your heart follows
- 3:53your choices, not the other way around. You read
- 3:58the Word consistently, and suddenly you want
- 4:00it more. You pray consistently, and suddenly
- 4:04you crave it. You worship consistently, and suddenly
- 4:09you sense God everywhere. You obey consistently,
- 4:14and suddenly obedience feels natural. Discipline
- 4:19is the soil which grows desire. And I can just
- 4:23speak to this time and time again, if you've
- 4:25ever felt sort of like a health journey and you
- 4:27cut out sugar, you cut out all the processed
- 4:30foods, you've done that and all of a sudden you
- 4:33crave more protein, you crave more water, you
- 4:37crave the things that you're actually eating
- 4:39and you just forget the sugar. You forget the
- 4:43candies, you forget the cookies. And then whenever
- 4:45you go back through the way that you used to
- 4:48eat, you're like, oh my gosh, this isn't even,
- 4:50this isn't set right. Because you've changed,
- 4:53because your palate is no longer wanting that,
- 4:56because you've starved from that. And so because
- 4:59of your obedience and eating the clean foods,
- 5:01you suddenly have obedience to the good foods
- 5:04and what it feels natural to eat fruits and vegetables
- 5:07and protein. and water and like all these things
- 5:11that are good for you and then all of a sudden
- 5:12you try to drink a soda and you're like oh my
- 5:14gosh this stuff is disgusting. So many times
- 5:18I have heard just in clinic that you know people
- 5:21like get off all of the processed foods and the
- 5:24junk foods and the sugar and they eat real food
- 5:27that God made and they're just like oh my gosh
- 5:29we went out and we thought people talked us into
- 5:31it and so we thought that we deserved it and
- 5:33so we just ate and then they woke up the next
- 5:35day and just felt like trash. And so it's just,
- 5:39and they're realizing, I just can't believe how
- 5:41I was feeling like this all the time. But you
- 5:44don't know, realize, you don't realize how bad
- 5:47that you feel until you feel good. And sometimes
- 5:49you don't realize how far you walked away from
- 5:51God until you're back into this presence. And
- 5:54so, truth number two, discipline protects calling.
- 5:59And so what does that mean? So if you have an
- 6:02anointing on your life that the enemy would love
- 6:04to distract, to distort, and destroy. And one
- 6:09of the easiest ways he does that is by pulling
- 6:11you into inconsistency. Discipline is not about
- 6:17legalism. It is about protection. Discipline
- 6:21guards your faith. Discipline guards your peace.
- 6:25Discipline guards your mind. Discipline guards
- 6:28your decisions. In Proverbs 25 -28, it says a
- 6:32person without self -control is like a city with
- 6:35broken walls down. Do you hear that? A lack of
- 6:40discipline makes your spirituality unprotected.
- 6:45Discipline builds your walls high and strong
- 6:48so the enemy cannot walk in and take whatever
- 6:52he wants. And if you remember from December whenever
- 6:55we walked through the fruits breads of the spirit,
- 6:57go back and listen to those. If you need to recap
- 6:59on them, if you didn't listen to them, go back
- 7:01and listen to them. And it's a doubt that we
- 7:04have to remember that we have self -control.
- 7:05That is something that God has given us. If we
- 7:07are a believer in Christ, we have self -control.
- 7:11It is a fruit of the Spirit. And He is the one
- 7:15that gave it to us. And so who can take it away
- 7:18from us? And so it's just so important that we
- 7:21look at this as, hey, I'm guarding my mind today.
- 7:24I'm putting on my helmet of salvation. I'm putting
- 7:26on my breastplate. I'm putting on my belt, my
- 7:28shoes. I have my shield. I have my sword. This
- 7:31is warfare. And so it's just so important that
- 7:36we arm ourselves with God's Word. It's just so
- 7:39important. Truth number three, sometimes you
- 7:42just have to do it anyway. You just do it anyway.
- 7:46You have to show up to work whenever you don't
- 7:47want to. You have to show up to the gym whenever
- 7:49you don't want to. You have to show up and do
- 7:53it anyway. This is part where we don't like to
- 7:58say it. This is a part we do not like, but absolutely
- 8:02it's needed. It's absolutely needed to show up
- 8:04to the gym. It's absolutely needed to put down
- 8:06the food that's trying to kill you. It's absolutely
- 8:08needed. There are going to be days when everything
- 8:12just feels off. Days whenever you're tired. Days
- 8:15when everything, kids are running wild. Days
- 8:17that your social life is just horrible. I mean,
- 8:21days when your emotions are so heavy. Days when
- 8:24your work drains you. Days when pressure hits.
- 8:26Days... When the last thing you want to do is
- 8:30one more spiritual discipline. Those are the
- 8:33days that you say, I'm doing it anyway. Because
- 8:38God is worthy anyway. Because my spirit needs
- 8:43this anyway. Because my calling matters anyway.
- 8:50Because this habit is building something in me
- 8:54anyway. Doing it anyway. is not about perfection.
- 8:59It is about commitment. It is about the faithfulness
- 9:03over feelings. It is about refusing to let your
- 9:06flesh run your life. Hebrews 12 says, let us
- 9:11run with endurance and the race marked out before
- 9:14us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, not fixing it on
- 9:17our motivations, not fixing it on our convenience,
- 9:20not fixing it on perfection, perfect conditions,
- 9:24fixing it our eyes. on Jesus. Endurance means
- 9:28you keep going. Consistency means that you keep
- 9:31choosing. Discipline means that you keep showing
- 9:34up, even when the feelings are low. And here's
- 9:38the beautiful part. Every time that you choose
- 9:40discipline, something shifts inside of you. You
- 9:45grow stronger. You grow steadier. You grow more
- 9:50spiritually forced. You grow more mature. You
- 9:53grow more sensitive to God. You grow more aware
- 9:56of what really truly matters. Discipline creates
- 10:01spiritual stability. Desire fuels spiritual passion.
- 10:07Doing it anyway veers spiritual resilience. And
- 10:13so here's your January challenge for this week.
- 10:15Pick one thing that you do not feel like you're
- 10:19doing right now and do it anyway. Open your Bible
- 10:23whenever you're tired. pray whenever you're frustrated
- 10:26and when you're discouraged, and choose obedience
- 10:30when it's inconvenient. Because those small daily
- 10:34choices you make now are shaping the person that
- 10:38you will become this year. And so let me close
- 10:42with this. God does not bless perfection. God
- 10:46blesses faithfulness. And discipline is simply
- 10:50faithful in action. If this message encouraged
- 10:55you, share it, like it, leave us a comment, help
- 10:58our little podcast grow. We thank you so much
- 11:01for allowing us this time with you this week.
- 11:04We would love to pray for you. Dear Heavenly
- 11:06Father, thank you so much for today. Thank you
- 11:07so much for these listeners. Thank you so much
- 11:09for the opportunity to learn and listen that
- 11:14discipline that grows desire, that discipline
- 11:16that protects our calling, and that sometimes
- 11:19you have to do it anyway, that you did not have
- 11:21to go to the cross, but you went there anyway.
- 11:23Thank you that you died for us. Thank you for
- 11:25our salvation. Thank you for your grace. Thank
- 11:26you for your mercy. Thank you for all that you
- 11:28have for us in this upcoming week. Thank you
- 11:31for all that you do. In Jesus' name, I pray.
- 11:34Amen. Thank you so much for hanging out with
- 11:36me today. This year is not about hype. It's about
- 11:39holy habits, spiritual transformation, and showing
- 11:42up for what matters most. I cannot wait for next
- 11:45week. Episode three is going to be powerful,
- 11:48and we're going to be talking about prayer, bold
- 11:51prayers for the new year. I'll see you then.
- 11:54Love you guys. Bye.
