- 0:08goal is to share everything you need to know about buying and
- 0:11managing short term rentals. Today's guest is Lisa Rhodes and
- 0:15she'll be sharing 5 reasons to attend the Houseplanet Roadshow
- 0:18which kicks off in Cornwall on the 5th of February.
- 0:22OK, real talk now for all you hosts out there, you know that
- 0:25moment when your guest messages you again with hey, what's the
- 0:29Wi-Fi code? Or you're staring at 5 different
- 0:32calendars wondering if you've accidentally double booked the
- 0:35cottage? Yes, we've all been there.
- 0:38That's why here at Houseplanner we recommend Housefully.
- 0:41It's basically your rentals control centre.
- 0:44It handles bookings across all the big platforms, syncs your
- 0:48calendars to ensure there are no double bookings, automates guest

- 1:47Lisa, thank you for joining us on Hostplanet Bite Size.
- 1:50The Houseplanet Roadshow is just around the corner.
- 1:53The first event will be held in Cornwall on the 5th of February.
- 1:57And you've got 5 reasons why hosts and property managers
- 2:00should be joining us. So take it away with reason #1.
- 2:05I do. And I think the first one is
- 2:07that it's hyperlocal. The the roadshow is going to
- 2:11deliver content which is very specific for the local business
- 2:15ecosystems in each area. And that's really important so
- 2:18that it's more valuable because we know that they're all very
- 2:20specifically different and one thing doesn't fit everybody.
- 2:23So I think that's the first good reason why people should come,
- 2:25because it's about learning about what's really important to
- 2:28their area. 100%, yeah. And we're like, like you say
- 2:31there, we are really trying to make things absolutely perfect
- 2:35for the local ecosystem so that people can learn about what's
- 2:39going on in their space. You know, the opening panel will
- 2:42be very much Cornwall dominated. So we'll be talking about the
- 2:45issues that are affecting Cornwall, like visit Cornwall
- 2:48going into liquidation, for example.
- 2:51Our title sponsors, Price Labs will be sharing data and
- 2:54information about the Cornwall market, maybe sharing some case
- 2:58studies. What happened in 2025, what to
- 3:00expect in 2026 and beyond? And it's an opportunity for, I
- 3:04think everybody who's part of that holiday letting ecosystem
- 3:08to talk to the other people involved in it and to really
- 3:11shape the conversation and the agenda for short term rentals in
- 3:15their region. So yeah, a really, really great
- 3:18opportunity. And everything will be hyper,
- 3:19hyper local. OK then, Lisa, so reason #2.
- 3:23So #2 is one of the reasons why I felt this roadshow was
- 3:29important is that it's difficult for people sometimes in the more
- 3:35you know, not I'm going to say remote, but different parts of
- 3:38UK to actually make some of the bigger, more central events.
- 3:42So this is about making a one day format really high impact
- 3:47learning for somebody who who takes, it's difficult to take
- 3:50that time out of your business several days out with business
- 3:53to go to a bigger event. So I think this is really
- 3:55important that we are going to condense into one day some
- 3:57really high impact learning and takeaways for people that
- 4:00potentially have never been to or cannot get to other events in
- 4:04the in the UK. Very much so.
- 4:06And I think the, you know, the vast majority of short term
- 4:09rental conferences and events, they take place in London.
- 4:12We just had one in Manchester recently.
- 4:14We did something in Chester with Sykes Holiday Cottages, but most
- 4:17are in London. It can be very expensive to get
- 4:20to. It can be very time consuming
- 4:22and I think difficult for a lot of property management,
- 4:24especially owners of these businesses to say, right, I'm
- 4:27going away for three or four days for a conference.
- 4:29So I think it is important and we've had these conversations a
- 4:31few times, haven't we? Even before the Roach is like,
- 4:33we need to get out into these communities and go go to where
- 4:36the house and property managers are to to to help them.
- 4:39Really. Yeah.
- 4:41And I'm, you know, and you know, as the founder of the winning
- 4:44short term rentals movement and I know it's not gender specific.
- 4:46And I know that, you know, men and women and, and other gender
- 4:49identities, you know, could be the primary parent or caregiver
- 4:54to whoever. But I think, you know, there are
- 4:56a lot of people who really do struggle with that logistical
- 4:58balance between running a business and running your
- 5:00family. And so I think going local is
- 5:03going to help a lot more people to be able to attend this event.
- 5:05And that was one of the reasons why, you know, we're very much
- 5:07in support of it. Absolutely.
- 5:09OK then, Lisa reason #3. So #3 is that we're not going to
- 5:13swamp people with, you know, some of these bigger events.
- 5:16You go in there and it's very overwhelming and you walk in and
- 5:19there are just rows and rows and rows of different suppliers and
- 5:22tech suppliers, et cetera. And like, where do you start?
- 5:25And I think by having a smaller event, you know, it is more
- 5:28intimate, it does give you a conversation, an opportunity to
- 5:31have those really those conversations which could really
- 5:34make a difference to your business.
- 5:35So, you know, we're not having huge numbers of sponsors and the
- 5:38ones that are coming, you know that there's there's not really
- 5:40a compete, you know, so you're going to get a chance to have
- 5:42some really sensible conversations potentially with,
- 5:45you know, a potential property manager partner or a potential
- 5:48data partner or something else that might really help your
- 5:50business. So I think that's really helpful
- 5:52than just being overwhelmed with rows and rows of exhibitors that
- 5:55just you just don't even know where to start.
- 5:57Yeah, a boutique event. And, you know, we're really
- 5:59trying to curate the experience so that, you know, we prioritize
- 6:04network and collaboration and learning, really learning from
- 6:08each other. I think, you know, we've all
- 6:09been to these events where you have that light bulb moment.
- 6:12You know, you might hear something said on your table if
- 6:15you're, if it's a round table discussion or something said on
- 6:18stage and you're like, oh gosh, that's something I can apply in
- 6:20my business tomorrow. So we want to have, you know,
- 6:23lots of those light bulb moments where people think, oh gosh,
- 6:25it's great. I've learnt something and I can
- 6:27I can use that to improve my business.
- 6:30OK then, Lisa recent #4. So #4 is, I know we've talked a
- 6:34lot about what the format should be and we've both been to lots
- 6:38of events this year. So we've seen the formats in
- 6:40other events. And what I'd like to promote on
- 6:44this one is it's not a sit and listen.
- 6:46It's a come, take part, collaborate, engage and be part
- 6:50of the conversation. So I think, you know, what
- 6:53business owners often miss out on is it's a very lonely place
- 6:56to work on your own in, in STR business, whether you're a
- 6:58property manager or a host. And this is an opportunity to
- 7:01come and be part of a conversation in a potentially in
- 7:03a round table setting. In most instances where you can
- 7:06really have a good conversation that is really going to, it
- 7:10might be a light bulb moment for your for your business.
- 7:12It might be that you make a connection with somebody that
- 7:13can help your business. It might be that you have a
- 7:15collaboration opportunity with another business in your area
- 7:17that you didn't even realize was there.
- 7:19So I think that's a really good reason to come to this
- 7:21particular event. It's not a sit listen, it's a
- 7:23come and take part. Absolutely, yeah.
- 7:25And it really will be round table focus.
- 7:28We're going to have table leads, there'll be competitions,
- 7:32there'll be discussions, there'll be Ice Breakers, of
- 7:34course, at the start. And you know what, we're going
- 7:36to completely finalize the content very, very soon.
- 7:38So we know exactly what that looks like.
- 7:39But yeah, that's, that's, that's the idea.
- 7:41Definitely. It's come and participate.
- 7:43It's not just sit and listen and maybe scroll on your phone for
- 7:46half of it. It's, it's actually come and
- 7:48take part and and, you know, shape this industry in in your
- 7:51region. OK then, Lisa, 5th and final
- 7:54reason. So this is a bit of a personal
- 7:56one. And again, I'm not, I'm not
- 7:58particularly pushing it, you know, any particular gender.
- 8:01But as, yeah, as the founder of Women in Short Term Rentals, one
- 8:03of the things I'm really keen to do here is to get more women to
- 8:07come to this event. I've worked really hard over the
- 8:10last year to get greater representation of women from our
- 8:13sector to events because I know that, you know, their voices
- 8:17should be heard, their stories should be heard.
- 8:19If they're not there, they can't be part of the narrative that's
- 8:22shaping our industry. And what we've seen by doing
- 8:25that is that they then can step up into speaking roles and other
- 8:29roles within our industry. So I'm really keen to promote
- 8:32that women should come to these events and maybe this is the
- 8:35first one they've ever been to and it might be the door opener
- 8:38to them going to other things. I've seen it happen with women
- 8:40I've worked with this year and I'm really proud of that.
- 8:43So I'm, I'm pushing the the women in short term rentals flag
- 8:46here because I'd really like to encourage more women to come for
- 8:48that reason really. 100%, yeah. And we're very proud for these
- 8:52events that the Women in Short Term Rentals community is a
- 8:55delivery partner and and helping us to to shape the content and
- 8:59making sure that we deliver as much value as possible for the
- 9:02attendees that are coming along. We should also mention as well
- 9:05the Short Term Accommodation Association, the STAA, they're
- 9:08the strategic partner for these events.
- 9:10So they'll be there and inviting local politicians which which
- 9:14I'm sure will be interesting, lots of people will want to have
- 9:17conversations with so we can explain the benefits of our
- 9:19sector. Price Labs of the title sponsor.
- 9:22And then we're working with various event partners.
- 9:25The first event partner is Speech Retreats in Cornwall and
- 9:29for the next event, Portsmouth, which is the 4th of March, our
- 9:32event partners are both to Isle of Wight businesses, so the
- 9:35Island Holiday Company and Just for You holiday homes in London.
- 9:41It's going to be an event the day after the Short Stay Summit.
- 9:45We take a bit of a break for summer.
- 9:47Then we're in Nottingham with Simply Owners, the direct
- 9:51booking website. In October we're we're with
- 9:54Curated Property in Bath, November with Sykes Holiday
- 9:58Cottages in Chester and then in December with Adore Scotland and
- 10:03the Edinburgh Address in Edinburgh on the 3rd of
- 10:07December. So 7 events all across the
- 10:10country and tickets are just £40 each and if you're a member of
- 10:14Lisa's group you'll be able to get a £10 discount.
- 10:17And I've managed to remember all that off the top of my head, so
- 10:20I'm quite pleased with myself. You can tell I've written this a
- 10:23lot of times. Yeah, I'm pretty impressed.
- 10:24And as you said, I have actually promoted the fact that as I
- 10:27said, you very kindly offered as a discount code for our women.
- 10:30In short, tremendous community that is promoted within our
- 10:32community group. And so I think we've made this a
- 10:36very accessible price and they're going to get a huge
- 10:39amount of value from attending at, you know, at that ticket
- 10:43price. I don't know of any other events
- 10:44that are offering such great value for such as low ticket
- 10:46price. 100% And if Lisa, if people want to join your group,
- 10:51where do they go? So we have two groups actually,
- 10:54we have a Facebook group called Women in Short Term Rentals and
- 10:56we actually have a LinkedIn group called Women in Short Term
- 10:58Rentals too. So either of those groups are
- 11:00accessible depending on what platform is your preferred
- 11:02platform to use. Fantastic, and we'll put the
- 11:04links to those in the show notes so people can sign up if they
- 11:08wish. Lisa, I'm really excited about
- 11:10the first roadshow event, 5th of Feb in Cornwall.
- 11:14Looking set to be a great day. Thanks so much for sharing the
- 11:17five reasons why people will be coming along and for joining us
- 11:20on host Planet Bite Size. Thank you very much for inviting
- 11:22me. Very excited to be part of this.
- 11:24I think it's going to be a great year next year, taking more
- 11:27education out to more business owners.
- 11:28That's exactly what we should be doing.
- 11:30So I'm very pleased to be part of that.
- 11:31All right, that's it for today's episode.
