- 0:45Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, this is Carale with Let's Talk.
- 0:48Speaker 3: And I have I have in the building. I have
- 0:51Speaker 3: Hollis Lewis here's and I have another. I'm not gonna
- 0:56Speaker 3: say he's a guest. I'm gonna say he we and
- 0:59Speaker 3: he is out. Yeah, we in his house. And today
- 1:05Speaker 3: I think we're going to have a very very interesting conversation.
- 1:08Speaker 3: And I'm gonna let him introduce himself and jump right
- 1:12Speaker 3: into the story and we'll go from there.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Well, all right, I'm what I mean that you'll miss Yeah,
- 1:19Speaker 4: we missed.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Lisa's not here. She she wasnable to make it the
- 1:23Speaker 3: day came.
- 1:24Speaker 5: I so you ain't come from no way, no way.
- 1:29Speaker 4: I thought we were better than that. I love it. So,
- 1:33Speaker 4: so holl's go ahead.
- 1:34Speaker 3: We're here to talk about the Capitol High basketball situation. So,
- 1:37Speaker 3: if you don't know, Capitol High was seventeen and four
- 1:40Speaker 3: ending the regular season. They were perennial number one, number
- 1:43Speaker 3: two team and Triple A ball.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Again.
- 1:46Speaker 3: They were Quad A last year. They moved a Triple
- 1:48Speaker 3: A this year or whatever. It's so confusing now. So
- 1:52Speaker 3: they entered a regional sectional tournament. I think is it
- 1:55Speaker 3: reasonably regional? Okay, so regional turn sectional? Yeah, no more sectional.
- 1:59Speaker 3: So they entered a regional tournament. Again, this is the
- 2:01Speaker 3: like number one, number two team in the nation, excuse me,
- 2:03Speaker 3: the state, and somehow they get ranked six. So the
- 2:07Speaker 3: coaches from a couple of schools in that particular conference,
- 2:12Speaker 3: you know, they vote on the you know, the rankings
- 2:15Speaker 3: as far as going into the regional. So a Capitol High,
- 2:18Speaker 3: which was seventeen and four, they're supposed to go off
- 2:21Speaker 3: your overall record and accomplishment, not necessarily conference records. Getting
- 2:25Speaker 3: vote voted six, they go to Greenbrier East Travel two
- 2:28Speaker 3: hours and unfortunately loss. So that's that's the backstory. So
- 2:33Speaker 3: go ahead with you.
- 2:33Speaker 5: First of all, I want to shout out to the kids,
- 2:35Speaker 5: the ball ors at Greenbrier East. They have nothing to
- 2:38Speaker 5: do with this. It's just a flawed system. And when
- 2:41Speaker 5: I say that, coaches should never be able to vote
- 2:44Speaker 5: on seating. If we can do this, all right, what
- 2:46Speaker 5: if we do this in football? Me call you the
- 2:49Speaker 5: coach of South Charles. I'm at Capitol Hollers, you at
- 2:52Speaker 5: GW and we need one more coach to make sure
- 2:55Speaker 5: Martinsburg go on the road every time.
- 2:58Speaker 4: And we just vote that. We just voted like we
- 3:01Speaker 4: can vote for that.
- 3:03Speaker 5: Me, you and you can change the seedings of the
- 3:07Speaker 5: body of work. I think it should be looked at
- 3:09Speaker 5: as the body of work. So now you're gonna say, well,
- 3:11Speaker 5: they didn't play any regional games. The schedule was put
- 3:14Speaker 5: out before they did this new region set up then, and.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Remember they were going from four A to three AS.
- 3:19Speaker 3: So that's what it got messed up at yes and
- 3:22Speaker 3: now and let me I'm gonna say this and you
- 3:27Speaker 3: can correct me if I'm wrong. At some point, this
- 3:33Speaker 3: is an issue that isn't really like me on the outside.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I got nothing in this, right, this is all about
- 3:43Speaker 3: a particular positions coaches.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Somebody has done this. We're thinking about this is something wrong. Yeah,
- 3:54Speaker 5: four coaches did it. They're voted them last. Like, how
- 3:57Speaker 5: can you vote a team that got seventeen wins under
- 4:01Speaker 5: a team that got three?
- 4:02Speaker 4: I don't care if they played bitty league basketball, I
- 4:05Speaker 4: don't care. How was that?
- 4:06Speaker 5: How was that even right? You're gonna say because they
- 4:08Speaker 5: didn't play a team in the region. But they played
- 4:11Speaker 5: South Charleston twice, they played Parkersburg South, they beat Bridgeport
- 4:16Speaker 5: at home. Yeah, they played g W they played Chapmanville,
- 4:20Speaker 5: they played Riverside, they played two teams out in Ohio
- 4:24Speaker 5: like six eight teams. It's a flawed system and they
- 4:28Speaker 5: got exposed.
- 4:30Speaker 3: And let's be clear, like, this wasn't like when we're
- 4:32Speaker 3: saying those four coaches were colluding. This isn't our conjecture.
- 4:36Speaker 3: This isn't something like we're guessing they told it in
- 4:40Speaker 3: the media, like, yeah, we did this. They didn't try
- 4:42Speaker 3: to hide their hands, and that's what makes it even
- 4:44Speaker 3: more egregious.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Well, do we have a why, Like, is the why?
- 4:50Speaker 3: The the excuse they gave is because Capitol didn't play
- 4:55Speaker 3: enough regional games or conference games.
- 4:59Speaker 4: It's regional. Yeah, I'm getting it. This all confusing, But
- 5:05Speaker 4: what's the record Capitol seven seventeen and four.
- 5:11Speaker 3: How many people are better? How many people record is
- 5:13Speaker 3: better than that? But I mean that's kind of not
- 5:16Speaker 3: That's not really the issue. The issue is that again
- 5:18Speaker 3: they got what they wanted. They sent Capitol on the
- 5:20Speaker 3: road in Capitol lost. They didn't want to have to
- 5:22Speaker 3: play a Capitol.
- 5:23Speaker 5: And let's be honest, Carl, Greenbrier East is not an
- 5:26Speaker 5: easy place to play. The gym is small, their their
- 5:29Speaker 5: fans is spectacular, Like, I can't knock that they fans,
- 5:34Speaker 5: I know, yeah, I know, you got senator the senators there,
- 5:39Speaker 5: it's his cord, he got a big chair. And it's
- 5:42Speaker 5: just a hard place to play. And I heard from
- 5:45Speaker 5: an administrator at Capital that our cheerleaders, in our mascot,
- 5:49Speaker 5: they even had no room.
- 5:50Speaker 4: To do what they did.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Now we can put this in Capital at Capitol, which
- 5:55Speaker 5: were supposed to be they shouldn't even played each other.
- 5:57Speaker 5: First of all, because they shouldn't played each other. Capital
- 6:01Speaker 5: should have played a start like a WAT team. But
- 6:04Speaker 5: if you because of their rank before they're ranking. But
- 6:06Speaker 5: if you're trying to get a good team out put
- 6:09Speaker 5: them on the road against another good team, that's a
- 6:11Speaker 5: hostile environment. We ain't gonna talk about the files thirty
- 6:14Speaker 5: to eight. I can't make it up, but I ain't
- 6:15Speaker 5: gonna bring that up. We ain't gonna talk about that.
- 6:17Speaker 5: But it's a hostile environment. You got to travel two
- 6:19Speaker 5: and a half hours. If home court at home field
- 6:22Speaker 5: don't have an advantage, it wouldn't be a word. You
- 6:25Speaker 5: wouldn't have say home court advantage or home field advantage.
- 6:29Speaker 5: We know it's advantage. Both of you guys play sports.
- 6:32Speaker 5: The kids gotta get up early, they got to go
- 6:34Speaker 5: to Greenbrier, they got to go.
- 6:35Speaker 4: To school that day.
- 6:36Speaker 5: If you if we at home, I think it's a
- 6:39Speaker 5: different story, I promise you.
- 6:41Speaker 3: I think it goes back and again within this the
- 6:44Speaker 3: wv SSA C they actually sent recommendations to them to
- 6:49Speaker 3: what they thought should be you know, the rankings. And
- 6:52Speaker 3: again just going back to like the premise of the conversation,
- 6:57Speaker 3: you in that circumstances, you never need to.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Have of coaches voting.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Unfortunately, I think you have to take the human element
- 7:05Speaker 3: out of it is strictly go to a metrics or
- 7:08Speaker 3: you have to have a third party, a non interested,
- 7:12Speaker 3: a non affiliated party that actually is going to set
- 7:15Speaker 3: the rankings. I mean, the easiest thing is just to
- 7:17Speaker 3: have the metrics. You go by record first, you go
- 7:20Speaker 3: by head to head matchups, and then you go by
- 7:22Speaker 3: the teams you want and lost agains.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Why are we not in that space? Why are we
- 7:28Speaker 5: not in that space?
- 7:30Speaker 3: I don't know why they do it like this for
- 7:33Speaker 3: regional setups, I have no idea. It's a very very
- 7:36Speaker 3: flaw system.
- 7:37Speaker 5: I think you need to bring us by in a
- 7:38Speaker 5: show that's smarter than me and ask them why that's
- 7:41Speaker 5: that's the question. Why and how how are we letting
- 7:45Speaker 5: coaches vote on seating? That blows your mind? I mean
- 7:50Speaker 5: it's gonna be hard. I'd be hard pressed to think that. Like,
- 7:56Speaker 5: if I got to vote, I may have played trust,
- 7:59Speaker 5: I may have seen or capital. I may have seen
- 8:02Speaker 5: them right, And maybe I'm thinking to myself, I don't
- 8:06Speaker 5: I don't really want them in the in the first bingle.
- 8:10Speaker 3: But but I think the issue is like what messages
- 8:13Speaker 3: that sending to kids, Like if I'm a coach and
- 8:16Speaker 3: I know my team's not very good, I'm gonna rank
- 8:19Speaker 3: myself accordingly. I'm not going to try to like buck
- 8:23Speaker 3: the system like we're we are. We are the record
- 8:25Speaker 3: that we are, and we're going to get ranked how
- 8:27Speaker 3: we're supposed to go. And if we win, we win.
- 8:29Speaker 3: If we lose, we lose. But it's not like you
- 8:31Speaker 3: can't look back and say, you know what, I what
- 8:35Speaker 3: I'll say to that. As bad as this may sound,
- 8:39Speaker 3: some of this ain't about the kids. I mean, it ain't,
- 8:41Speaker 3: you know. Some of that's just ain't about the kids.
- 8:44Speaker 3: It's about me. I'm the coach, and I want to
- 8:47Speaker 3: win at and at all costs. And if I can
- 8:53Speaker 3: get you where I can, where it works better for me,
- 8:58Speaker 3: why wouldn't.
- 8:59Speaker 4: I do it? Nah? I don't think you do that.
- 9:02Speaker 4: I don't see me do. I don't see honest I will,
- 9:05Speaker 4: I won't. You're better guy in me.
- 9:07Speaker 5: If I if I can make this thing look like
- 9:11Speaker 5: the way I want to look, I'm gonna say, Oh yeah,
- 9:13Speaker 5: bro y'all seven, that's.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Why it shouldn't be there. It shouldn't be there.
- 9:17Speaker 5: How can you vote a team higher than a team
- 9:20Speaker 5: won three games and a team won seventeen that it
- 9:23Speaker 5: shouldn't be there?
- 9:24Speaker 4: Yeah, because I'm going to Martinsburg last every time. If
- 9:26Speaker 4: it was football car.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Exactly, I mean, that would be that would be the
- 9:32Speaker 3: best play. That'll keep them, that'll make them have to
- 9:37Speaker 3: go road, go on the road. But why would you
- 9:40Speaker 3: want to taint it? Like even if you won the
- 9:42Speaker 3: regional championships, so you made it to the tournament at whatever,
- 9:45Speaker 3: why would you want I just wouldn't want to taint
- 9:47Speaker 3: it to that degree. And I'm just saying, as an adult,
- 9:50Speaker 3: you got four coaches that's doing that.
- 9:52Speaker 4: That's that's crazy to me.
- 9:54Speaker 3: And again, shout out to Ripley, shout out to I
- 9:57Speaker 3: forget the other schools, but it was other schools that
- 9:59Speaker 3: actually voted accordingly and they voted right. So shout out
- 10:02Speaker 3: to those school just Hoover Ripley. I know those two
- 10:06Speaker 3: for sure. I'm just saying, like, if I'm in that
- 10:08Speaker 3: position and I'm a coach, of course we want to win,
- 10:11Speaker 3: but I'm not willing to like go that far with it.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I just think that's just greasy. And I don't necessarily
- 10:17Speaker 3: know who the four teams are. I don't know who
- 10:21Speaker 3: the coaches are on that team, but I'm I'm inviting
- 10:27Speaker 3: you to the show call in or whatever. At some
- 10:33Speaker 3: point in time, you are welcome to come on the
- 10:35Speaker 3: show to discuss this, to defend yourself because for me
- 10:41Speaker 3: as an athlete, I want the smoke.
- 10:45Speaker 4: I want it. Yeah, I'm not gonna I want my
- 10:48Speaker 4: kids to have the smoke.
- 10:50Speaker 3: And if you win, great, If you don't, hey, who
- 10:53Speaker 3: did you face? You face the smoke? And that's we
- 10:56Speaker 3: expected that to happen. You can't duck it.
- 11:01Speaker 5: And if you're ducking it, you're doing a disservice for
- 11:03Speaker 5: your kid and probably probably you doing it for yourself.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Yeah I don't know. It's just you know what I'm saying.
- 11:11Speaker 5: You're doing that because you want to be a notable
- 11:14Speaker 5: coach who's won a championship or whatever, and and and
- 11:19Speaker 5: keep moving up the ranks in some form of fashion.
- 11:22Speaker 5: But here's the thing, guys, next year, whoever wins that
- 11:27Speaker 5: region were gonna forget about this. They got the regional championship,
- 11:30Speaker 5: they couldn't down the next we go, we go. We
- 11:33Speaker 5: can talk about it now because it's hot, But next year,
- 11:35Speaker 5: when they the regional champs, they're the one going to
- 11:38Speaker 5: the Civic Center and they're not asking how they got there.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Nobody's gonna I think. No, we live in social media,
- 11:45Speaker 3: a's they gonna remember how you got there.
- 11:47Speaker 4: But they still getting the schirch to say, I.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Because you're gonna get you're gonna have it, just like
- 11:53Speaker 3: South Charleston when we want to stay championship during COVID,
- 11:56Speaker 3: I like to bring it up again, so about so
- 12:01Speaker 3: so so one of those teams end up making and
- 12:03Speaker 3: the winning, it's gonna be a big asterisk and you're
- 12:06Speaker 3: not going to live it down.
- 12:07Speaker 4: A look different, a little different. It's a little different.
- 12:10Speaker 4: But played four games that year, you can't say it
- 12:14Speaker 4: six you didn't play. We were the best. That was
- 12:17Speaker 4: pretty good.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Y'all want to beating martins Burg, we was beating. We
- 12:22Speaker 5: was loaded, y'all have y'all pretty good. But I didn't
- 12:25Speaker 5: play anybody we had like we had like ten guys
- 12:27Speaker 5: win d one year.
- 12:28Speaker 4: I can bring up y'all schedule, But but to you
- 12:31Speaker 4: all's debate.
- 12:33Speaker 3: See, I think that's the debate that a lot of
- 12:35Speaker 3: folks will will want to have.
- 12:39Speaker 5: About this situation to try to nullify it. And and
- 12:45Speaker 5: how do you like, how do you how do you like?
- 12:48Speaker 5: How do you how do you make how do you
- 12:49Speaker 5: get past that point system like college SI. I think
- 12:52Speaker 5: it's a system that's metric. It's it's a straight up metric.
- 12:56Speaker 5: It's just it's record.
- 12:58Speaker 3: It's head to head matchup, and you get a certain
- 13:00Speaker 3: allocation of points for teams that you beat, teams that
- 13:03Speaker 3: you lost to, different things of that nature. So guess what, No, No,
- 13:06Speaker 3: I was gonna ask the question like, so what do
- 13:08Speaker 3: you so what should the because again the WV S
- 13:11Speaker 3: A S A C. Shout out to them, they did
- 13:12Speaker 3: send the recommendation on what they thought should happen in
- 13:15Speaker 3: that regional set up. So do you think they just
- 13:18Speaker 3: need to have the authority to say, Okay, this is
- 13:21Speaker 3: the this is the ranking or final say listen, I.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Think they have to.
- 13:26Speaker 5: I think they they can't sit on the sideline and
- 13:30Speaker 5: not do something.
- 13:31Speaker 4: They got it.
- 13:32Speaker 3: They gotta be aggressive and step out, say something, do something,
- 13:37Speaker 3: because you can't let this go and you can't like
- 13:41Speaker 3: you can't let this go and think and and it
- 13:43Speaker 3: be okay, do those four coaches go ahead.
- 13:45Speaker 4: I'm talking.
- 13:45Speaker 5: I'm about to tell you that teams who voted capital seventh,
- 13:47Speaker 5: that's last because they can't vote for theirself, right, it's
- 13:50Speaker 5: eight teams there. Greenbrier East voted them seven, Pipe View
- 13:55Speaker 5: voting them seven, Princeton voting them seven, and Shady Springs
- 13:59Speaker 5: voted them seven.
- 14:00Speaker 3: So should those coaches, Should those schools face some sort
- 14:04Speaker 3: of penalty for that?
- 14:05Speaker 5: I think so, because then here comes the rabbit hole,
- 14:08Speaker 5: And I know Cookie won't do it, but I'm if
- 14:11Speaker 5: you go low, I'm going to hell next year. I'm
- 14:14Speaker 5: voting the best team seven. I don't care who it is. Now,
- 14:17Speaker 5: I'm all right, okay, I see how y'all playing, and
- 14:20Speaker 5: I'm gonnaet some potners in the in the in the
- 14:22Speaker 5: in the region to vote at seven to Now it
- 14:25Speaker 5: just becomes a rabbit hole when it's not fair, because
- 14:27Speaker 5: now I'm gonna do the same thing you did to me.
- 14:29Speaker 4: If it's a better team and I'm the head coaching,
- 14:32Speaker 4: I gonna vote.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Right because I just don't understand collusion in any sort
- 14:39Speaker 3: of business.
- 14:40Speaker 4: We see it in sports.
- 14:41Speaker 3: We see coaches that in the NFL college we seen
- 14:45Speaker 3: them get fine, we seen them get suspended. We've seen
- 14:47Speaker 3: administrators get suspended and fine when you have collusion. We've
- 14:51Speaker 3: seen owners of NFL NBA teams get fine when there's
- 14:56Speaker 3: evidence of collusion. So this is clear evidence of collusion.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Something has to happen from them.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Do you think they think that they got away with it?
- 15:05Speaker 5: No, he came out to say the Springs coach and
- 15:07Speaker 5: I hope I'm messing up. He came out and said, oh,
- 15:10Speaker 5: I'm going Capitol last, I ain't play no regional games,
- 15:12Speaker 5: and this, this and that.
- 15:13Speaker 3: He but he's just but he coming out. That's not
- 15:18Speaker 3: coming out. That's justifying. He came and justified. Now he
- 15:22Speaker 3: said this before though, okay before.
- 15:24Speaker 5: But my thing is, if I'm sitting back and I'm
- 15:28Speaker 5: hearing this conversation, I could I could make the case.
- 15:33Speaker 4: You know what, they're right. I was wrong. I made,
- 15:37Speaker 4: I made I made a mistaken say that. Well, and
- 15:45Speaker 4: here's the thing. If if we know, if if people.
- 15:50Speaker 5: Are listening and they say that this is that that's wrong,
- 15:52Speaker 5: what they did was wrong, it don't really matter what
- 15:56Speaker 5: what they think.
- 15:59Speaker 4: They're wrong. I mean, the general public is gonna take
- 16:02Speaker 4: it's gonna look at this and think that that's wrong.
- 16:05Speaker 4: But to this point, it seems like they have got
- 16:07Speaker 4: away with it.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Capitol went to head to go to greenbrier Es and lost,
- 16:10Speaker 3: so they got what they were so the result that
- 16:13Speaker 3: they were fishing for they got.
- 16:14Speaker 4: They got it, you know what I mean.
- 16:15Speaker 3: And like I said, to this point, I guess my
- 16:18Speaker 3: question would be, like, if there is going to be
- 16:21Speaker 3: some sort of penalty after the fact, who is going
- 16:24Speaker 3: to implement that penalty? Should it be the WVS SAC,
- 16:29Speaker 3: Should it be the conference that there is, should be
- 16:31Speaker 3: the regional Like somebody to me has to do something,
- 16:33Speaker 3: because you cannot collude at anything, even if insider tradee.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Martha Stewart went to prison for a year for somebody
- 16:42Speaker 3: telling her some colluding to tell her some information. You
- 16:45Speaker 3: cannot do this on any level. And I just don't
- 16:47Speaker 3: know how you're so brazen enough to just hey, yeah
- 16:50Speaker 3: we did it and that's it and nothing's gonna happen.
- 16:53Speaker 4: It has to be something, I agree.
- 16:55Speaker 5: So what do you think their justification gonna say because
- 16:57Speaker 5: they didn't play any regional games?
- 16:59Speaker 4: I mean, they.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Already say the justification, which again that doesn't even matter
- 17:03Speaker 3: because from what I and this is coming from Principal
- 17:05Speaker 3: Anderson and capitol High that above anything, in all things,
- 17:10Speaker 3: your record is what stands.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Body will work. Yeah, your body will work.
- 17:14Speaker 3: And because of the flip flopping of all the changing
- 17:17Speaker 3: of the rankings in the in the classifications.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Your schedules already set.
- 17:24Speaker 3: So I can't change my schedule in the middle of
- 17:27Speaker 3: the season to accommodate you. I can maybe add a
- 17:30Speaker 3: game or two, but I can't change my schedule because
- 17:33Speaker 3: it's already set. You know how the schedules go a year, two, three, four,
- 17:36Speaker 3: sometime five years in advance. And you can't say Capitol
- 17:40Speaker 3: On playing the hardest conference in the state, the ms SAC.
- 17:44Speaker 4: What ms SAC, that's the hardest conference in the state.
- 17:48Speaker 5: There's not a better conference than GW and South Charleston
- 17:52Speaker 5: and Capitol and Riverside and and it's just it's just
- 17:56Speaker 5: it's sad because we let adults mess up things again. Yeah,
- 18:01Speaker 5: when are we gonna stop talking about adults messing up?
- 18:04Speaker 5: And it's and it and it's and it's sports, yes, yeah,
- 18:08Speaker 5: it's it's sports man. And it's a shame because if
- 18:15Speaker 5: sports does what people have always said that it will
- 18:19Speaker 5: do for young men and young women, it will help them,
- 18:23Speaker 5: it will teach them discipline, all of those kinds of things,
- 18:26Speaker 5: all those positive things. And you as a coach, you
- 18:33Speaker 5: as an administrator, you as a fan, you as a dad,
- 18:41Speaker 5: all of those positions. When you start to do something negative,
- 18:47Speaker 5: you interrupt the growth of those young men and those
- 18:52Speaker 5: young women who are trying to learn structure.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Man, I just think you let them off the hook. Man,
- 19:00Speaker 3: don't go to Capitol win or lose. You're gonna be
- 19:03Speaker 3: stronger for it. You can't try to hire kids from adversity,
- 19:06Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, Like, go ahead, throw them
- 19:08Speaker 3: in their fire.
- 19:09Speaker 4: The LBR, you'll take that. L's cool.
- 19:11Speaker 3: And just speaking of that, and again I know and
- 19:14Speaker 3: y'all ain't trying to go here, but it's the same
- 19:15Speaker 3: thing that happens. I'm looking at like the little league
- 19:18Speaker 3: football situations around here.
- 19:19Speaker 4: It's the same thing.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Just not letting certain teams in leagues and stuff like that.
- 19:23Speaker 3: It's just, man, I don't know. I'm just for like
- 19:27Speaker 3: taking the human element out of all of it. At
- 19:29Speaker 3: this point, how.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Do we how do we get how do we how
- 19:32Speaker 5: do we get it out of the hands of individuals,
- 19:36Speaker 5: Like let's take let's let's go to youth sports. All
- 19:40Speaker 5: the youth sports needs would be bylaws and who plays
- 19:46Speaker 5: who to set a schedule each year. So if there
- 19:50Speaker 5: was somebody who was in charge of that that organization,
- 19:56Speaker 5: not a board, member of a team or president of
- 19:59Speaker 5: a team, somebody that's individual by themselves make this decision.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Let's just say, like a Hollis Lewis, I don't want this.
- 20:09Speaker 3: You know, talking to itself right now, but but I
- 20:16Speaker 3: think to your point, you need a board. You have
- 20:19Speaker 3: to have a third in any of these situations. You
- 20:21Speaker 3: need a third party, non interested, non affiliated entity, whether
- 20:26Speaker 3: that's a board, whether that's a group of individuals, to
- 20:29Speaker 3: make these decisions, that's going to be held accountable, that's
- 20:33Speaker 3: going to have the record reflected in the public.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Because here's the thing.
- 20:37Speaker 3: It's a reason why again we could we can go
- 20:39Speaker 3: down a number of rabbit holes, probably, but it's a
- 20:43Speaker 3: reason why we're not producing no more Randy Mosses, no
- 20:46Speaker 3: more Carawle's, no more Kurt Warners, no more Jason Williams,
- 20:49Speaker 3: because we are ducking the smoke at every level.
- 20:53Speaker 4: Think about that. It's a reason why we don't have
- 20:55Speaker 4: those guys no more.
- 20:57Speaker 3: We used to have a consistent group of guys who
- 20:59Speaker 3: were not just good for the state, but also like
- 21:03Speaker 3: nationally elite athletes.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Again, we population decline. It.
- 21:06Speaker 3: It's a lot of factors into it, but abba you
- 21:09Speaker 3: have to throw that we're ducking smoke. We're seeing it
- 21:11Speaker 3: at the little league levels. We seeing it at the
- 21:14Speaker 3: high school levels where we're not pushing our kids to
- 21:17Speaker 3: compete against the best. Randy Moss in them is great
- 21:20Speaker 3: as that team. Those teams were. They didn't win the
- 21:22Speaker 3: championship every year.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Jr.
- 21:23Speaker 3: House, they didn't win those championships every single year. Quincy Wilson,
- 21:26Speaker 3: they didn't win championships every single year because they faced
- 21:30Speaker 3: the stiffest, toughest competition and wasn't no smoke.
- 21:33Speaker 4: Ducked.
- 21:34Speaker 3: And that's the problem when you start to set up
- 21:36Speaker 3: your kids at a situation where you don't put them
- 21:39Speaker 3: in a verse situations, particularly when it comes to sports.
- 21:42Speaker 3: You're not making them play against the best. It hurts them,
- 21:45Speaker 3: it don't hurt you. Your days is over.
- 21:48Speaker 5: And to your point, and I probably have said this
- 21:53Speaker 5: before when Kurt Warner was at Pine Bow.
- 21:59Speaker 4: And I think it.
- 22:00Speaker 5: Was double A or whatever, Single A, and you know
- 22:05Speaker 5: everybody's hearing about him, you know, so he gets selected.
- 22:08Speaker 5: You know, he won all the all the awards and
- 22:11Speaker 5: he was gonna be the North South. He was getting
- 22:14Speaker 5: the best back in the nation.
- 22:16Speaker 4: Award.
- 22:17Speaker 3: So he was coming in a couple of days late
- 22:21Speaker 3: for the North South game.
- 22:22Speaker 4: So me and my buddy Eddie ray Dies, we were like, man,
- 22:27Speaker 4: let's go, let's go meet him and see what he's like.
- 22:30Speaker 4: We wanted to size him up. Bro. I'm looking at
- 22:33Speaker 4: him and I'm like, well, he ain't all that big,
- 22:35Speaker 4: you know, he ain't all that But he put his
- 22:39Speaker 4: uniform on.
- 22:41Speaker 3: And the first time he took off in the backfield,
- 22:47Speaker 3: I don't think I had ever in my life at
- 22:51Speaker 3: that point in time, had ever seen anybody like that.
- 22:57Speaker 3: What that did for me was the understand there's still
- 23:01Speaker 3: another level. You know, you in the North South game.
- 23:05Speaker 3: But Kurt Warner no wonder he was. He was he
- 23:10Speaker 3: was going to Penn State because he and I'm going
- 23:12Speaker 3: to Marshall. Marshall ain't winning no games and the Penn
- 23:15Speaker 3: State winning national championship. There was a clear difference between that,
- 23:21Speaker 3: and I think kids need to see that you got it.
- 23:24Speaker 4: You can't.
- 23:24Speaker 3: You can't run from that because it's because if you
- 23:29Speaker 3: run from it, you will never get to even see it.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Probably because you're not going to be in an All
- 23:33Speaker 3: Star game, You're not going to be at a school
- 23:36Speaker 3: that that's going to be like that.
- 23:38Speaker 5: It's just not gonna happen. So so what you guys saying,
- 23:40Speaker 5: and we see this a lot. All the superstars are
- 23:43Speaker 5: teaming up together and not playing against each other, and
- 23:46Speaker 5: that's hurting. It's hurting our state pretty much. And speaking
- 23:50Speaker 5: of that, we can go into the transfer. I know
- 23:52Speaker 5: there's a lot of CONTROVERSI the House Bill full four,
- 23:56Speaker 5: I think it's forty four to twenty five, and let
- 23:58Speaker 5: me just explain what it is and what it isn't.
- 24:01Speaker 5: So basically, it basically repeals legislative authority over the transfer
- 24:08Speaker 5: rule of high school sports. So it passed the House
- 24:11Speaker 5: and basically it just gets us out the way as
- 24:14Speaker 5: far as the legislative body. Now it's going to the Senate,
- 24:16Speaker 5: and if it passes the Senate there's no conflicts. Then
- 24:19Speaker 5: then to go to the governor to be signed.
- 24:21Speaker 3: So if it is signed into law, basically all it
- 24:25Speaker 3: will do it will pit the authority back with the
- 24:28Speaker 3: wv SSAC. So they could keep the rule as it is,
- 24:32Speaker 3: they could go back to the previous rule.
- 24:34Speaker 4: Or they can make up a whole new rule.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Now the wv SSAC is the enforcement mechanism they enforce
- 24:42Speaker 3: the rules of high school sports. Generally, when it comes
- 24:45Speaker 3: to something like that, from what I understand, administrators at
- 24:49Speaker 3: the various high schools, they will vote on the rule.
- 24:53Speaker 3: So if you want to see the rule reflect it
- 24:56Speaker 3: a certain way, you need to get with your high
- 24:58Speaker 3: school principal and the ads and coaches and all that,
- 25:02Speaker 3: and you need to express those feelings about how you
- 25:05Speaker 3: want to see the rule, implement it, and play it out.
- 25:09Speaker 3: I I that's I'm glad you said that, just the
- 25:14Speaker 3: way that you said it, because that that's actually.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Perfect for me to say. If I'm a coach, I want,
- 25:23Speaker 5: I want to smoke like I want. I want to
- 25:27Speaker 5: represent my community. I don't want the best player out
- 25:32Speaker 5: of Charleston. I don't want the best player out of Hurricane.
- 25:35Speaker 5: I don't want the best player out of South Hills.
- 25:37Speaker 5: I don't want I don't want that. I want my
- 25:41Speaker 5: kids in my community. And let's go to work. And
- 25:45Speaker 5: I just and and and for you to.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Man, I spent four years at Marshall Lowson, four years
- 25:55Speaker 3: with never a winning season. If you know we need
- 26:00Speaker 3: thing about me and my career, it don't what is
- 26:04Speaker 3: that matter?
- 26:05Speaker 4: But that's all that matters. Is what you do.
- 26:08Speaker 3: But I'll give the other side of that, because there
- 26:10Speaker 3: is another side of it. When you have a school
- 26:12Speaker 3: like GW we got one feeder school, so at some
- 26:16Speaker 3: point we need other athletes to come in, Okay, to
- 26:21Speaker 3: fill out those rosters. Wait a minute, we got one
- 26:22Speaker 3: feeder school, all right, but wait a minute, Wait a minute.
- 26:24Speaker 3: How long have y'all had one feeder school. We had
- 26:27Speaker 3: just since the inception of the school, and we've always
- 26:31Speaker 3: had a few transfers come in.
- 26:33Speaker 4: So you need a.
- 26:34Speaker 3: School recruiting or people coming. Oh not recruiting far God,
- 26:38Speaker 3: I know, Okay, so the kids kids coming. But what
- 26:41Speaker 3: I'm saying is like you can't like when you when
- 26:44Speaker 3: it comes to that transfer rule. It's not a one
- 26:46Speaker 3: size fits all model, right because when you have schools
- 26:50Speaker 3: like South Charles, when you have schools like Capital, you
- 26:52Speaker 3: have a multitude of a feeder schools. So if you
- 26:54Speaker 3: had a smaller community that's still playing at a really
- 26:58Speaker 3: high level, there needs to be some flexibility. And again
- 27:01Speaker 3: I would say it needs to be flexibility for kids
- 27:03Speaker 3: because every situation ain't gonna fit every kid.
- 27:06Speaker 5: So I can't work with you on that. You need
- 27:08Speaker 5: to be you need to be double A or single.
- 27:11Speaker 3: I mean, I'm just saying our numbers don't indicate that,
- 27:13Speaker 3: so we can't be. What I'm saying though, the other
- 27:16Speaker 3: side of that, too is that every situation don't fit
- 27:18Speaker 3: every kid. So if I'm in a situation where maybe
- 27:21Speaker 3: I'm just not getting along with a coach, or I'm
- 27:24Speaker 3: not in a situation that's gonna be best for my
- 27:27Speaker 3: sort of talent, it may be right for me to
- 27:29Speaker 3: move now. Again, No, you don't just be moving any
- 27:34Speaker 3: any rules around you. I can't make the case that
- 27:39Speaker 3: South Charleston fit me like like, because you elite athlete,
- 27:46Speaker 3: you're different.
- 27:46Speaker 4: You're not You're not everybody else.
- 27:48Speaker 5: You can't just use you didn't nobody call me no
- 27:50Speaker 5: elite athlete in high school.
- 27:52Speaker 3: You had an elite athlete and mentality nobody was doing
- 27:57Speaker 3: with you waking up in the five in the morning,
- 27:59Speaker 3: working out, going crazy. Nobody they wasn't doing that. That's
- 28:03Speaker 3: the issue that the gaming is not.
- 28:06Speaker 5: The gaming is not the problems you not getting up
- 28:08Speaker 5: at five o'clock in the morning.
- 28:10Speaker 3: But what I'm saying is, perhaps you gotta have some flexibility.
- 28:14Speaker 3: No whatxibility good, It's gonna be real good.
- 28:21Speaker 5: If you can change this rule, how would you make
- 28:25Speaker 5: it look? And I'm ask both of you guys, if
- 28:27Speaker 5: you can, if you can make this transfer rule, how
- 28:29Speaker 5: would you make.
- 28:30Speaker 4: It look all? Right?
- 28:31Speaker 3: So I would say, you get the transfer going out
- 28:34Speaker 3: of middle school to high school. So if you you like,
- 28:37Speaker 3: you're not mandated to go to your theater school essentially,
- 28:42Speaker 3: So I would say that that's one. And then I
- 28:45Speaker 3: would say you get one other opportunity and if you
- 28:48Speaker 3: trans and it's no, and it has to be done
- 28:51Speaker 3: by a certain time, so it's no like middle of
- 28:52Speaker 3: the year, none of that stuff. You get one opportunity
- 28:55Speaker 3: if you transfer anywhere else.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Beyond that, you got.
- 28:57Speaker 3: To sit out to transfers in one dance. That's what
- 29:01Speaker 3: I mean. That went and one in high school. And
- 29:04Speaker 3: I would almost want to say, like like I said,
- 29:06Speaker 3: I just I want to say maybe even the one
- 29:10Speaker 3: out of I don't know, you know now that I
- 29:13Speaker 3: rethink that maybe I would even say you don't get
- 29:16Speaker 3: the trans I would I couldn't say that you definitely
- 29:18Speaker 3: get the transfer coming out of middle school. And then
- 29:20Speaker 3: maybe you have to have a legitimate reason or you
- 29:23Speaker 3: have to go before the board to say this is
- 29:25Speaker 3: why I need to transfer once I'm in high school,
- 29:27Speaker 3: because you just don't want to create a situation where
- 29:29Speaker 3: kids is just moving fluently, just just moving from school
- 29:32Speaker 3: to school to school. But I would also say this too,
- 29:34Speaker 3: and I said this on the house floor. We have
- 29:36Speaker 3: school choice in West Virginia, and you can't tell me that.
- 29:40Speaker 3: And it just seems hypocritical that I can go to
- 29:43Speaker 3: all these schools and get charter schools, homes school, dada da,
- 29:46Speaker 3: but now I can't play extracurricular activities in those school
- 29:49Speaker 3: when I have school choice. So I'm just saying it's
- 29:52Speaker 3: not as streamline as a linear as what people think.
- 29:56Speaker 3: But but it can't be off the rails. There has
- 30:00Speaker 3: to be some sort of well guidelines around the guideline.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Call already they're shaking.
- 30:07Speaker 4: The guideline is if you transfer, you got to sit out.
- 30:11Speaker 5: You still get the transfer, Yeah, you still get the goal,
- 30:14Speaker 5: but you got to sit out of here.
- 30:17Speaker 3: I think there's there's insinuating circumstances. So I mean, you're
- 30:20Speaker 3: help with that. That just means like there's a there's
- 30:23Speaker 3: a legitimate reason why I need to transfer.
- 30:25Speaker 4: Okay, what what could what possibly could that be? I mean, well,
- 30:29Speaker 4: what if your coach left? What if? What if you
- 30:30Speaker 4: in high school your coach get fired? What if your boss?
- 30:35Speaker 3: We'll teach you how what happens when your boss leaves
- 30:37Speaker 3: and you get a new boss. You learn you've got
- 30:41Speaker 3: to stay.
- 30:41Speaker 4: At a job.
- 30:41Speaker 3: You can quit your job, you can quit your you
- 30:43Speaker 3: can quit the game. Nah man, Yeah, I'm just saying
- 30:47Speaker 3: that's legitimate.
- 30:48Speaker 4: No it is not.
- 30:50Speaker 3: What if what if there's accusation of sexism or racism
- 30:53Speaker 3: or bully, it does a whole host.
- 30:55Speaker 4: Is a coach issue. Now we get the coach, kids
- 30:57Speaker 4: still stay, we get rid of the coach, we bring
- 30:59Speaker 4: another coach in. Now that's that promise is what if?
- 31:02Speaker 3: Again, the accusation doesn't mean there's gonna be a conviction.
- 31:06Speaker 3: So if I if I have an active I'm saying, look,
- 31:08Speaker 3: this coach is racist to me, this coach is sexist,
- 31:10Speaker 3: taught me whatever, And it's in and for the investigation,
- 31:14Speaker 3: the criminal part of it, that's unfound. But I still
- 31:17Speaker 3: have these claims. And I'm saying extreme situations. I'm saying
- 31:23Speaker 3: I'm not saying I give you, I give you, I
- 31:25Speaker 3: give you something like that, I give you something like that.
- 31:30Speaker 3: But there is there is something that's called community. Okay,
- 31:36Speaker 3: you you know this. You know as a politician, you
- 31:39Speaker 3: know this.
- 31:40Speaker 4: So to me, the community in which I grew up in,
- 31:44Speaker 4: that I live in, that's where I'm supposed to go.
- 31:50Speaker 3: Now, I might want to know that. Are kids making
- 31:56Speaker 3: a decision or is it us? I think what I'm
- 31:58Speaker 3: saying is like even I think adults is making these
- 32:00Speaker 3: bad decisions. I'm glad you said they were bad because
- 32:04Speaker 3: because here's the thing. Once you are in the community,
- 32:09Speaker 3: you live in the community, you you play in your community,
- 32:14Speaker 3: you go to school in your community, you play in
- 32:15Speaker 3: your community. That is what you That's how you understand
- 32:19Speaker 3: loyalty to that that community.
- 32:21Speaker 4: And I'm with you on that.
- 32:22Speaker 3: But what I'm saying is that those sort of that
- 32:25Speaker 3: sort of characterization is not what it is now. No,
- 32:29Speaker 3: because because that that top athlete in the community.
- 32:35Speaker 4: Believes he can go she can.
- 32:36Speaker 5: Go wherever they want because they want the best quote,
- 32:41Speaker 5: the best opportunity in their in a in anybody's commun
- 32:46Speaker 5: don't think kids look at it like that. No more,
- 32:48Speaker 5: don't go you know here's what I went to. But no, no,
- 32:53Speaker 5: you didn't transfer to it. You didn't say that.
- 32:55Speaker 3: I want to trans transfer to a losing school. But
- 32:57Speaker 3: that's that's different. What I'm saying, though, is that at
- 33:00Speaker 3: a young at a young age, we're seeing now and
- 33:03Speaker 3: we and your part of this as far as you
- 33:05Speaker 3: know all about this. Kids can't even play in the
- 33:08Speaker 3: local leagues no more so. Kids are not looking at
- 33:11Speaker 3: these things through the lens and the eyes in which
- 33:13Speaker 3: we looked at them. If you're an adult's telling a
- 33:17Speaker 3: local team that they can't play in local leagues or
- 33:20Speaker 3: they can't play in this league, that these are adults
- 33:22Speaker 3: making this decisions. Right, we got teams, we got individuals
- 33:26Speaker 3: with the perliferation of like au basketball, different things of
- 33:30Speaker 3: that nature. So the guys in which these kids are
- 33:32Speaker 3: looking at it, they're not looking at it from a
- 33:34Speaker 3: community standpoint. They're looking at it from like what what
- 33:38Speaker 3: best fits me? Or what's the situation that I want
- 33:41Speaker 3: to be put myself in? And a lot of that
- 33:42Speaker 3: I'm not saying some of that is selfish, and some
- 33:45Speaker 3: of that has been dictated by bad behavior of adults.
- 33:49Speaker 4: But how many times can a kid go to another school?
- 33:52Speaker 4: I mean that's I know some young in three schools.
- 33:55Speaker 5: I'm like man and and two and to the adults
- 34:01Speaker 5: that are listening, who who are fixing, promoting opportunity to
- 34:10Speaker 5: go somewhere else, do something else, play for another.
- 34:13Speaker 4: Team, get one good team, and then we dominate all that.
- 34:18Speaker 4: You're wrong. You're not helping the structure, You're not helping
- 34:21Speaker 4: the system, You're not helping the kids. Like yes, because.
- 34:26Speaker 5: At the end of the day, the structure and the
- 34:30Speaker 5: system that sports presents to a child is to work
- 34:36Speaker 5: hard and find some piece not greatness, some piece of achievement,
- 34:43Speaker 5: some growth, something that just lets you know that you
- 34:46Speaker 5: just got a little bit better.
- 34:47Speaker 3: But kids will look at you and say, well, I
- 34:49Speaker 3: can do that going to five different schools. I mean
- 34:51Speaker 3: even if you look at the heroes that kids look
- 34:53Speaker 3: up to now at the college level, Man, we know
- 34:56Speaker 3: college athletes and been like five different schools. The whole
- 34:59Speaker 3: Indiana Championship football team, they had been the average I
- 35:04Speaker 3: think it's two to three schools because we're thirty years old.
- 35:08Speaker 3: But so kids is looking up to that up they
- 35:11Speaker 3: was now. But what I'm saying though, is with you, Okay,
- 35:18Speaker 3: adults have made bad structural decisions, systematic decisions at the
- 35:22Speaker 3: youth level, the middle school level.
- 35:24Speaker 4: And then if I'm a kid.
- 35:25Speaker 3: I'm looking up to college athletes, and all these college athletes,
- 35:28Speaker 3: they ain't been the ones who the ain't like the
- 35:30Speaker 3: major hairs is of Carley Well. We we romanticized that
- 35:34Speaker 3: they was at one school. So everything around the kid
- 35:36Speaker 3: is telling you do what's best for you. It ain't
- 35:40Speaker 3: just the kid, but we know they're thinking that. But
- 35:43Speaker 3: we all been through that system.
- 35:45Speaker 5: Why are we not turning around and telling them, hey,
- 35:47Speaker 5: that's not really the right system.
- 35:50Speaker 4: Do you think it's.
- 35:50Speaker 5: Fair that South Charleston's girls don't have a girls basketball team?
- 35:54Speaker 4: Awful? It was terrible, Like come from where it came from? Who?
- 35:59Speaker 4: And do you think any of the teams that the
- 36:02Speaker 4: girls went to that was recruited there went there or whatever?
- 36:08Speaker 4: Do you think they care? I don't know.
- 36:11Speaker 3: I mean I would probably not. I mean, they just
- 36:12Speaker 3: handle their own business because I know them wanted to
- 36:16Speaker 3: stay there. They wanted to play for South Charleston but couldn't,
- 36:18Speaker 3: so they had to go.
- 36:19Speaker 4: I'm saying.
- 36:20Speaker 3: So I'm saying someone saying situations like that too. We
- 36:22Speaker 3: could add that like if you maybe your team don't
- 36:26Speaker 3: get filled that year, then you could should be able
- 36:28Speaker 3: to go somewhere else.
- 36:29Speaker 4: To place. I'm like, I'm one hundred percent with that,
- 36:33Speaker 4: but we stopped it on the front end.
- 36:36Speaker 3: So what would be your rule change? How would you
- 36:38Speaker 3: fix it? What would be your the rule that you
- 36:39Speaker 3: would impl play where you live? So you're saying, no
- 36:42Speaker 3: transfer from middle school to high school. Why, I'm just asking.
- 36:46Speaker 3: I ain't trying to I'm just saying, what would be
- 36:47Speaker 3: your rule?
- 36:48Speaker 5: I don't see, I don't I don't see. I don't
- 36:50Speaker 5: see a reason. And and the reasons that comes to
- 36:54Speaker 5: my mind is, well, when I go from I leave
- 36:56Speaker 5: middle school, I'm gonna go to the high school. Well
- 36:58Speaker 5: the high school they they're not very good, so I'm
- 37:01Speaker 5: gonna go somewhere. So what would be your rule?
- 37:03Speaker 4: So I think that you you are when you're in
- 37:06Speaker 4: the structure, when you're in the system, you're in the
- 37:08Speaker 4: South Charleston system. You go to you go to elementary,
- 37:12Speaker 4: middle school, high school.
- 37:14Speaker 3: So you're saying the only transfer is to like emergency
- 37:16Speaker 3: singuating circus if you move or if you move, if
- 37:19Speaker 3: you no, just if you I'm saying, if there's like
- 37:22Speaker 3: we just said it's emergency, there's an emergency situation, then
- 37:25Speaker 3: I'm okay with that. And and people are gonna say, oh,
- 37:28Speaker 3: that's old school, that's old.
- 37:30Speaker 4: That's that's too strict. Why is that what you went through?
- 37:38Speaker 3: It?
- 37:39Speaker 4: It wasn't.
- 37:39Speaker 3: You didn't feel like you were being suffocated and you
- 37:43Speaker 3: were stuck.
- 37:44Speaker 4: I didn't ever think I was stuck at South Charleston.
- 37:46Speaker 3: But you didn't have the eyes that was you can
- 37:48Speaker 3: see everything. That's another thing we got in factory with
- 37:51Speaker 3: this value. You can see the world things I'm seeing
- 37:54Speaker 3: with everybody.
- 37:55Speaker 4: Two things. Hold on, let me what would be your rule?
- 38:00Speaker 5: You get one transfer, but you gotta go to the
- 38:02Speaker 5: high school. You've gotta go to half Yeah, you gotta
- 38:05Speaker 5: check it out if you like, so you gotta go
- 38:07Speaker 5: to your feeder. Yes, you get one. Then you're done.
- 38:09Speaker 5: You can't move because here's the thing. South Charlest is
- 38:13Speaker 5: lower than the middle school level. The boys but undefeated.
- 38:19Speaker 4: Ball.
- 38:21Speaker 5: But I asked around are they going to the high
- 38:24Speaker 5: school and most of them said no.
- 38:26Speaker 4: That crushes me.
- 38:27Speaker 5: Same thing with with with Dupop Dupop boys basketball team
- 38:34Speaker 5: last year, undefeated, heck of a team. They went different ways,
- 38:38Speaker 5: not saying this is right or wrong. It just crushed me.
- 38:41Speaker 5: As like carl say, the community of it that you
- 38:44Speaker 5: do all this work in middle school, you go undefeeded.
- 38:47Speaker 4: Then these girls just go or these young men just
- 38:49Speaker 4: go different ways.
- 38:50Speaker 5: I just think you gotta try out the school, because
- 38:53Speaker 5: if you don't try it out, you can anybody can
- 38:56Speaker 5: say whatever, if I don't, if I don't want you
- 38:58Speaker 5: to go to South Charles, I'm saying such such, such,
- 39:00Speaker 5: such a terrible come over here with me. But if
- 39:02Speaker 5: you go there and like it, Actually the school, I'm
- 39:03Speaker 5: not saying this call because he's sitting there. Actually South
- 39:05Speaker 5: Charlest is pretty dope school. So people will argue. So
- 39:10Speaker 5: people will argue on the other side of that and
- 39:11Speaker 5: say to your point. If you're saying, well, you can
- 39:14Speaker 5: transfer if you move, people will argue, well, that's that's
- 39:16Speaker 5: a socioeconomic issue, because if dad and mom got a
- 39:19Speaker 5: little paper then they could just if we want to
- 39:22Speaker 5: go to GW, we want the West Side, we could
- 39:24Speaker 5: just go rent an apartment up here, and that happened,
- 39:27Speaker 5: And so people will say that's socioeconomic. So now if
- 39:30Speaker 5: I'm if i'm if I don't have the resources, then
- 39:33Speaker 5: I'm stuck with where I'm at. But I think that
- 39:35Speaker 5: I think there's also the opportunity too, if you wanted
- 39:39Speaker 5: to justify what that move was for.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Did you get another job? Did you do like the people.
- 39:46Speaker 3: I ain't saying people just buy they got the house,
- 39:49Speaker 3: So there is no justification other than you just want
- 39:51Speaker 3: your kid to go to the Yes, I totally understand that,
- 39:54Speaker 3: but I'm saying that there there still is opportunity to
- 39:57Speaker 3: verify what the move was, why the move was.
- 40:01Speaker 4: And again.
- 40:04Speaker 3: I and I probably have never really said this, but man,
- 40:09Speaker 3: I loved South Charleston.
- 40:12Speaker 4: And we didn't win. We didn't win, we didn't win
- 40:15Speaker 4: the championship, but I loved it.
- 40:18Speaker 5: You know why because me and about five six, seven
- 40:21Speaker 5: eight other people walked to school every single day.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Together. And I remember that.
- 40:31Speaker 5: These kids don't have that, and they don't and and
- 40:34Speaker 5: and that value, that importance to me, those are things
- 40:40Speaker 5: that are important. Those guys that I played with at
- 40:43Speaker 5: Marshall at South Charleston, man, I like I'm talking to
- 40:47Speaker 5: some of these dudes, like I'm still talking to these guys.
- 40:50Speaker 4: You go to a place you ain't.
- 40:52Speaker 5: Really making a whole lot of friends, and brother Charleston
- 40:54Speaker 5: didn't want me. Charleston would have never taken me. Stonewall
- 40:58Speaker 5: would have never taken me. No, they would not have,
- 41:02Speaker 5: but they wanted you, bro.
- 41:03Speaker 4: I don't want it.
- 41:04Speaker 5: I didn't want none of them to play. I don't
- 41:06Speaker 5: want none of them to play on my team. I
- 41:08Speaker 5: want to play against you.
- 41:10Speaker 4: I want that, I want I want to test that.
- 41:13Speaker 3: But I but again, it goes back to what I'm saying.
- 41:15Speaker 3: It's like if you're starting at the youth level and
- 41:18Speaker 3: all of a sudden, we've seen it in the youth
- 41:21Speaker 3: basketball where they don't want certain teams playing all star games.
- 41:25Speaker 3: We definitely see it in youth football. It's been the
- 41:27Speaker 3: worst ever. It's like the competition element is sucked, dried
- 41:30Speaker 3: up because it's starting with adults. So it's like, until
- 41:33Speaker 3: we took in my conjecture, until we fix structural problems
- 41:38Speaker 3: here and I don't know how it is nowhere else.
- 41:40Speaker 3: I'm saying, just here in the valley. Until we fix
- 41:43Speaker 3: those structural problems, these other problems is gonna manifest later.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Until we until we start to fix the youth sports
- 41:51Speaker 3: and just the mentality around that, the middle school and
- 41:55Speaker 3: all that stuff, these other problems gonna gonna come to
- 41:58Speaker 3: the surf. You got to get the kick, you got
- 42:00Speaker 3: to get the coaches out of the room.
- 42:02Speaker 4: I think the parents too.
- 42:04Speaker 3: Yes, you need the coaches out of the room, and
- 42:06Speaker 3: you need the and and the parents out of the room.
- 42:09Speaker 3: And you need someone a group of folks who can
- 42:13Speaker 3: understand the reality of what we're trying to create with
- 42:17Speaker 3: these with the sport, with football, with basketball, with baseball,
- 42:23Speaker 3: what do what do we want for our young kids
- 42:26Speaker 3: to get from the sport? And I think to shout
- 42:29Speaker 3: out to west Side Soccer. And I'm not just saying
- 42:31Speaker 3: because our kids play, but I just to me, that's
- 42:34Speaker 3: the model. They they got the best system in my opinion.
- 42:38Speaker 3: I second, I've seen like it's one hundred percent about
- 42:42Speaker 3: the kids. It's not about adults. You don't have parents
- 42:45Speaker 3: that are yelling, going crazy or trying to you know,
- 42:47Speaker 3: go off at the games. It's it's one hundred percent
- 42:50Speaker 3: about development and about the kids. And I think we
- 42:55Speaker 3: got to get even to to to to some level,
- 42:59Speaker 3: particularly at the youth level.
- 43:00Speaker 4: I think we even got to get winning kind of
- 43:02Speaker 4: out the way. I think. So you know what I'm saying,
- 43:03Speaker 4: it's just about development, you know what I mean. I
- 43:06Speaker 4: think that I.
- 43:06Speaker 3: Think in youth sports, the youngest and the next level
- 43:11Speaker 3: should just play.
- 43:13Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, so many plays, so many plays.
- 43:18Speaker 3: You can get touchdowns, you know, but you ain't gotta
- 43:20Speaker 3: it don't matter about winning and losing. But what you're
- 43:22Speaker 3: doing is you're trying to develop the lineman. You're trying
- 43:24Speaker 3: to develop the receivers and the running backs and quarterbacks getting.
- 43:28Speaker 4: Good handoffs and and all those kind of things. Your
- 43:30Speaker 4: defensive players. You're you're just trying to do that. Then
- 43:33Speaker 4: when you go to quote the B team, you give
- 43:36Speaker 4: him a little bit more. And then when you go
- 43:39Speaker 4: to the A team, let's go because you getting ready
- 43:41Speaker 4: for middle school.
- 43:42Speaker 5: Now, yeah, now let me ask you a question. You
- 43:44Speaker 5: played at the highest level, oh pro, will you let
- 43:47Speaker 5: your grandson play football?
- 43:48Speaker 4: Right now? Under like the situation, I would, I would
- 43:52Speaker 4: let him. I would let him play.
- 43:54Speaker 3: And but I'll say this, Fortunately, he doesn't want to play.
- 44:00Speaker 4: And I'm happy with that. So you're not you're not
- 44:02Speaker 4: like the not all, not at all.
- 44:10Speaker 3: I don't even care if he watches it. I don't care,
- 44:13Speaker 3: Like he don't need you know, I have no I
- 44:18Speaker 3: have no interest in my my grandson playing any sports.
- 44:22Speaker 3: My son didn't play, and he played a little bit
- 44:26Speaker 3: in Minnesota, but he didn't play long and and he
- 44:29Speaker 3: only got one quite quit that was and that was it.
- 44:34Speaker 3: Ain't no come back, No, ain't no comeback. But my
- 44:37Speaker 3: grandson is so good in academics. I can't there would
- 44:45Speaker 3: be I'd be stupid. I slapped myself to worry about
- 44:48Speaker 3: what what else he's gonna do?
- 44:51Speaker 4: You get? You get a's all the time. Go go
- 44:55Speaker 4: do that.
- 44:55Speaker 5: That's my neighbor. I got a question for you before
- 44:59Speaker 5: I know, Delegate. With the NIL deals now in middle
- 45:03Speaker 5: school and high school? How do that work with the
- 45:06Speaker 5: transferring thing?
- 45:08Speaker 4: With the bill? How do that?
- 45:10Speaker 5: Just say, all right, I'm doing the extreme. This school
- 45:14Speaker 5: got ten thousand dollars for Payton and I need that
- 45:17Speaker 5: ten bands.
- 45:18Speaker 4: I need. You know what I'm saying. I'm struggling over here.
- 45:21Speaker 4: And how do that work with the bill? Where now
- 45:24Speaker 4: you can pay kids to go to middle school and
- 45:26Speaker 4: high school?
- 45:27Speaker 3: The thing is the payments aren't coming from the school,
- 45:30Speaker 3: so the schools aren't affiliated with the NIL deals. So
- 45:35Speaker 3: the NIL deals is third party deal. So if you're
- 45:38Speaker 3: like a good athlete, you know, you good soccer player
- 45:40Speaker 3: or something to that effect, and some car company wants
- 45:43Speaker 3: you to do a commercial, you would be able to
- 45:44Speaker 3: do it. And in fact, you couldn't even have the
- 45:47Speaker 3: bill stands now, which kind of nullifies to me the
- 45:51Speaker 3: whole purpose of it. Has the bill bill stands now,
- 45:55Speaker 3: you couldn't even have like paraphernalia of the school and
- 45:58Speaker 3: what you go to. So if you go to GDP,
- 46:00Speaker 3: you can't have like the Patriot or nothing like that,
- 46:02Speaker 3: So it can't be a fear. You can't use like
- 46:04Speaker 3: your like your clips from you know, your highlight film.
- 46:08Speaker 3: It's part of that promotion. So it's really just the
- 46:11Speaker 3: way it's tru it's not it's not affiliated with the
- 46:16Speaker 3: school on what you're going to because and and again
- 46:19Speaker 3: I brought up the argument, well, you know, the point
- 46:21Speaker 3: of me being able to like, the reason why I
- 46:25Speaker 3: would even get that sort of attention where somebody would
- 46:27Speaker 3: want to pay me is based off of my performance
- 46:30Speaker 3: on the.
- 46:32Speaker 4: Now.
- 46:32Speaker 3: Again, that's one part of it. The other part of
- 46:36Speaker 3: it is that I may be liking shout out to
- 46:38Speaker 3: him and this is his name, so this ain't me
- 46:40Speaker 3: saying that white boy m just for you. He went
- 46:43Speaker 3: to South Charleston High School, he played sports at one time.
- 46:46Speaker 3: So somebody like that, who is really social media star
- 46:51Speaker 3: but just but just so happened to play sports, he
- 46:55Speaker 3: would be right no matter how good he good he
- 46:57Speaker 3: is on the on the football field, he was a
- 46:59Speaker 3: person that probably would be right to get a bunch
- 47:02Speaker 3: of in io deal because he has a big social
- 47:04Speaker 3: media follow So I say all that to say that
- 47:07Speaker 3: I think the way in which is set up is
- 47:09Speaker 3: almost like you have to have like the social media
- 47:12Speaker 3: part of you gotta have another part and you just
- 47:15Speaker 3: so happen to play sports, gotcha. So that's the way
- 47:17Speaker 3: the West Virginia system is set up. It's not something
- 47:19Speaker 3: where you're gonna get directly paid from the school itself. Now, again,
- 47:24Speaker 3: the third part of that is that you could end
- 47:27Speaker 3: up in a situation if let's say the transfer you
- 47:30Speaker 3: have freedom to transfer wherever. You could end up in
- 47:34Speaker 3: a situation where maybe you got some guy who just
- 47:37Speaker 3: loves his high school. Maybe he owned a car dealership,
- 47:39Speaker 3: or maybe he got housing or something like that. You
- 47:41Speaker 3: could say, yea, I'm gonna give you an n idea
- 47:43Speaker 3: in io deal. You get this car when you come
- 47:46Speaker 3: to this school. Essentially, you know what I'm saying. So
- 47:50Speaker 3: it could so it could get tricky, you know what
- 47:53Speaker 3: I mean?
- 47:53Speaker 4: They used to call it a green handshake.
- 47:59Speaker 5: Isn't that gonna have to be a whole lot of
- 48:01Speaker 5: like policing, policing, but in that structure.
- 48:05Speaker 3: But if you think about it, for I would say
- 48:08Speaker 3: ninety percent of them who's probably not doing anything shady.
- 48:11Speaker 3: Your ROI, your return on investment for giving some kid
- 48:15Speaker 3: some you know, money for your T shirt company, it
- 48:18Speaker 3: probably ain't going. It would have to be a hell
- 48:20Speaker 3: of a return investment for me to pay you fifteen
- 48:23Speaker 3: twenty grand to do some promotion for me.
- 48:25Speaker 4: I need I need.
- 48:26Speaker 3: If I'm going to invest twenty I probably need one
- 48:28Speaker 3: hundred and fifty back off then, right, you know what
- 48:30Speaker 3: I'm saying. So for most companies and for most people,
- 48:33Speaker 3: if you're not doing anything shady, you probably ain't gonna
- 48:35Speaker 3: get no nil deal at least not to that, not
- 48:38Speaker 3: to that grandiose level. You might get a couple dollars
- 48:40Speaker 3: here and there, but you're not gonna get anything huge
- 48:43Speaker 3: because it's no ROI.
- 48:46Speaker 4: All right, you got anything? Yes?
- 48:47Speaker 5: Okay, go ahead, I got the coach's name that that
- 48:50Speaker 5: we want to bring on the shews y'all show. I
- 48:52Speaker 5: just want to ask them or all right, Jared pardon
- 48:55Speaker 5: or pattern for Greenbrier East, Ronnie Olsen Shady Springs, Matt
- 49:00Speaker 5: Smith Princeton, and Brett Tolliver pike View.
- 49:04Speaker 4: If y'all listening, please call call her Hollis and come
- 49:07Speaker 4: up here because I got a question. How can you
- 49:10Speaker 4: vote a.
- 49:10Speaker 5: Team that won three games over a team that won seventeen?
- 49:15Speaker 4: Got that question? I can? I can.
- 49:16Speaker 3: Probably my wife's from green Brier East, so I might
- 49:21Speaker 3: be able to try to get.
- 49:24Speaker 4: Big Gym on the show, Big Sener the Gym with
- 49:28Speaker 4: baby Dog.
- 49:31Speaker 3: All. I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna close out by
- 49:35Speaker 3: by for for everybody who's gonna listen to this show
- 49:40Speaker 3: and gonna hear all of the things that they that
- 49:43Speaker 3: we've said today. Trust me when I tell you that
- 49:49Speaker 3: mine comes from a passion that love sports, and I
- 49:55Speaker 3: look at it in its in its best way, and
- 50:00Speaker 3: I don't want to lose the game for the sake
- 50:04Speaker 3: of money, for the sake of fame or any of that.
- 50:10Speaker 3: And I just think that when we when we start
- 50:12Speaker 3: looking and starting trying to put laws bylaws in for
- 50:18Speaker 3: young kids and all of that.
- 50:21Speaker 4: Don't forget the game.
- 50:23Speaker 5: Don't forget the game, because the game is bigger than
- 50:29Speaker 5: your child. It's the it's the path. It's the path
- 50:34Speaker 5: that took me to where I am.
- 50:37Speaker 4: So don't don't just be about your kids. Understand that
- 50:43Speaker 4: there has to be some regulations, there have to be rules,
- 50:46Speaker 4: there have to be things that they have to follow,
- 50:48Speaker 4: because in professional sports, one of the key components is
- 50:54Speaker 4: following direction, doing.
- 50:58Speaker 5: What they tell you to do. That's Hollis. I'm going
- 51:04Speaker 5: to assume your job is about doing what is right.
- 51:08Speaker 3: Yeah, we got structure. You got structure at a couple
- 51:10Speaker 3: of different levels. Yes, what he would structure. I got
- 51:16Speaker 3: in trouble last week. Follow the structure about what's up?
- 51:21Speaker 5: I mean, so understand, please just understand that you can't
- 51:27Speaker 5: erase the structure in sports for the benefit of the
- 51:31Speaker 5: money and the benefit of your household or any of that.
- 51:35Speaker 4: Let sports be sports and get in it. Just join
- 51:38Speaker 4: it and be part of it. Don't try to change it,
- 51:41Speaker 4: don't make it anything. Just take your journey through the
- 51:45Speaker 4: sport that your child is in and do the best
- 51:48Speaker 4: you can.
- 51:49Speaker 5: Hollis, I think you said something on the floor about that,
- 51:51Speaker 5: like sports saved you.
- 51:53Speaker 3: Definitely, man, sports, I mean, that's indicative. That's why Again,
- 51:57Speaker 3: people may not like this point, but I'm not when
- 52:01Speaker 3: it comes to like, I know, when I went to
- 52:03Speaker 3: high school, academics was like second. It was socialization, it
- 52:08Speaker 3: was academics, and it was sports. And to me, it's
- 52:12Speaker 3: not always just about academics because some people, you may
- 52:15Speaker 3: go to school just to play in the band. You
- 52:17Speaker 3: may go to school just to be a major at
- 52:20Speaker 3: that may be the activity. Or you may go to
- 52:22Speaker 3: school just to be on the chess team that you
- 52:25Speaker 3: may go to school just to get a free lunch.
- 52:27Speaker 3: That may be the thing that carries you on, and
- 52:31Speaker 3: then you start to manipulate and pick up the other
- 52:34Speaker 3: stuff later. I knew my sophomore year in college. I
- 52:36Speaker 3: was like, man, I ain't going to the NFL. I
- 52:37Speaker 3: don't really want to do this too much longer.
- 52:40Speaker 4: Yeah, let me go.
- 52:42Speaker 3: I still play, but I'm like, let me go, just
- 52:43Speaker 3: focus on these academics. And I went from just being
- 52:46Speaker 3: an average student to be on the Deeds list. Every
- 52:49Speaker 3: semester after that, Literally every semester after that, I was
- 52:52Speaker 3: on the Dean's list because I just made that decision.
- 52:54Speaker 4: I was the college coach, high school coach. I was
- 52:58Speaker 4: their worst athlete.
- 53:02Speaker 5: Why because bride didn't want nothing but football school. I
- 53:06Speaker 5: just tried to get through it because I wanted to
- 53:09Speaker 5: play football.
- 53:11Speaker 4: And it took me.
- 53:12Speaker 3: It took me midway through college to understand, well, what
- 53:16Speaker 3: if I don't make it, what am I gonna do?
- 53:19Speaker 3: Then Sonny Randall, Bob Pruitty, they got me through. They
- 53:26Speaker 3: got into my head and made me get through. Mom
- 53:29Speaker 3: was going crazy. Mom was going crazy.
- 53:32Speaker 5: And so I am the epitome of understanding exactly the
- 53:38Speaker 5: opposite of what you're saying.
- 53:40Speaker 3: I'm that dude. I'm that dude, and I'm telling you
- 53:44Speaker 3: it ain't the right way. But I'm saying I disagree
- 53:48Speaker 3: with that. I say, like it's your way. Not everybody's
- 53:51Speaker 3: path is going to be the same, and it's important
- 53:54Speaker 3: that we provide our kids a bunch of different paths
- 53:57Speaker 3: because again, somebody may not be math, English and signs,
- 54:00Speaker 3: but you go take them to carve it and they
- 54:01Speaker 3: all start.
- 54:02Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 54:03Speaker 3: Somebody may not be, you know, nothing, on any quarter field,
- 54:07Speaker 3: but in that science and that geometry class, they going nuts.
- 54:10Speaker 3: So we education is not this this piggy hole like
- 54:14Speaker 3: we try to fit it into. Education is on the
- 54:17Speaker 3: football field, because I say this, as far as my
- 54:20Speaker 3: education in high school, I learned the most on the
- 54:22Speaker 3: football field. That was the primary that was that was
- 54:26Speaker 3: the most. I'm not talking about just you know, the
- 54:28Speaker 3: x's and those of it. I mean just the lessons
- 54:30Speaker 3: that are around it. Right, So that was the primary
- 54:33Speaker 3: source of my education during that time. So we can't
- 54:36Speaker 3: necessarily just say those things important. We have those structures
- 54:39Speaker 3: in place for a reason, and we have to give
- 54:40Speaker 3: our kids every single outlet opportunity possible for them to
- 54:45Speaker 3: you know, matriculate into the future.
- 54:48Speaker 4: I'll give you that. All right.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Well, ladies and gentlemen, we're gonna get out of here
- 54:52Speaker 3: today and thank you whatddy. We appreciate what you in here.
- 54:56Speaker 3: Hope them coaches call. I don't know about that. We'll
- 55:01Speaker 3: be talking a long time. All right, We're out of here.
