- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, guys, welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke.
- 0:02Speaker 1: I'm your host, Colleen Witt, and today we have very
- 0:05Speaker 1: special guest, comedian, actor, and fellow podcast host. Yes, Clayton
- 0:10Speaker 1: English is in the building.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Hey, what's up.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Glad to be here, so nice to spend time. Yes,
- 0:15Speaker 1: it's actually the second time we're spending time together.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I know I first time you had a fiasco.
- 0:21Speaker 1: But Little Fiasca, what did you eat the first time?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Was pizza?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Was? No? It was like some wings in any Chinese
- 0:29Speaker 2: place and I ain't really know the spot and they
- 0:31Speaker 2: were not Yeah, but.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Were you when you chose that? Was that off of
- 0:35Speaker 1: like a New York because New York that's what we.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yea they do. They do that heavy, y'all do that
- 0:40Speaker 2: heavy like?
- 0:41Speaker 1: But was that an Atlanta spot?
- 0:43Speaker 2: No, that was I was eating the Chinese food places
- 0:46Speaker 2: down here like that because it was cheaper than you know,
- 0:49Speaker 2: getting the wings that we eat in Atlanta, you know,
- 0:52Speaker 2: like the Jets are the American dem or No, not
- 0:56Speaker 2: at all. I told you it was even when I broke,
- 1:01Speaker 2: because you know, the Chinese, dude, you can get the
- 1:02Speaker 2: fried rice and the wing as a little combo, and
- 1:05Speaker 2: that ship might come in under seven dollars. You know,
- 1:08Speaker 2: back then, you know you on a whole, a whole
- 1:11Speaker 2: ten wings with fries. You looking at it, you know
- 1:14Speaker 2: he's probably about nine.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Ten and that's like two three meals for the day.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, if you give you go the right place. Yeah,
- 1:19Speaker 2: they get you loaded up. Yeah with that that rice
- 1:23Speaker 2: they wasn't using, that's all fried rice is too rice.
- 1:26Speaker 2: They wasn't. You know, the rights got to get old
- 1:28Speaker 2: to get fried.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Is this the part where it's educated ignorance? I don't
- 1:33Speaker 1: think that's true. Yes, what is it?
- 1:35Speaker 2: You can't make fried rice like the real fried rice
- 1:38Speaker 2: with fresh rice. That rice gotta be old.
- 1:41Speaker 1: We may have to fact check that because that can't
- 1:43Speaker 1: be true. It hasn't because then educated ignorance. Because this
- 1:49Speaker 1: is why we have this is why we have English majors.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, speak.
- 2:16Speaker 1: How often do you drop an episode every Monday? Every Monday?
- 2:20Speaker 1: You can get educated?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yes, yes, and and and it's educated ignorance because I
- 2:25Speaker 2: don't know everything nobody nobody does, but you're always trying
- 2:30Speaker 2: to learn.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So yeah, before we started, you said that the lines
- 2:35Speaker 1: on the water bottle saying, but all right, just making sure.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Definitely for a broke person. You learn to measure with
- 2:44Speaker 2: those with the lines on the bottle and the red
- 2:46Speaker 2: Solo cup, the red Solo cup, that bottom line, that's
- 2:51Speaker 2: a shot. You're you never heard these things. You never
- 2:56Speaker 2: heard these never beer. There is that line at the
- 2:59Speaker 2: top is another line. You know, the red Solo cup,
- 3:02Speaker 2: it's got the different lines on it, right.
- 3:04Speaker 1: But yeah, I know. But so that's how much of
- 3:07Speaker 1: a certain substance. So if it's a shot, it has
- 3:09Speaker 1: to be this wine has to be filled to a
- 3:10Speaker 1: certain line. Then bear to a certain line.
- 3:12Speaker 2: They don't have to be, but that's the measurement. This
- 3:15Speaker 2: is like if you put it at the bottom of
- 3:17Speaker 2: the solo cup and put it in the shot cup,
- 3:19Speaker 2: it'll be about the size of a shot, and this
- 3:21Speaker 2: about the size of a glass of wine. And this
- 3:24Speaker 2: is about the size of what the beer is supposed
- 3:27Speaker 2: to be. That's what they said.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I like it, whoever they is.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I be finding stuff out. You know. Sometimes you
- 3:33Speaker 2: gotta go hang around white people at a frat party
- 3:35Speaker 2: or some shit and they're like, dude, it's just a shot,
- 3:38Speaker 2: and you're like, well, how you know it's like because
- 3:40Speaker 2: then and then they're like, oh.
- 3:42Speaker 1: God, oh that's a white person. We're basing this off
- 3:45Speaker 1: of white, white edguy. White?
- 3:47Speaker 2: Yeah, because who else?
- 3:48Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 3:49Speaker 2: We wasn't even having solo cups like that. Black people
- 3:53Speaker 2: was having house cups. You had your cup for today, Yeah,
- 3:58Speaker 2: the solo ones. I'm just talking shit for you. Okay.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So what are you gonna have me eating today?
- 4:02Speaker 2: Man? Dinner?
- 4:04Speaker 1: Breakfast for dinner, breakfast for dinner.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Now do you have you ever had this for lunch?
- 4:10Speaker 2: Yeah? You can have it any time.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Okay, I'm just I was just curious.
- 4:14Speaker 2: But that's how I knew we weren't like my mom
- 4:17Speaker 2: money was funny.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Oh if it was like dinner time, you're like, what
- 4:21Speaker 1: are we having, She's.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Like breakfast, and it'd be cool, like you like, ah, yeah, okay,
- 4:28Speaker 2: it's different. Yeah, but then you start seeing it every
- 4:31Speaker 2: day and now you like, oh we fucked up, were
- 4:38Speaker 2: out here bad? Like now we eat breakfast every day
- 4:41Speaker 2: like so, but it always stuck with me, just as
- 4:44Speaker 2: there's some quick, cheap shit you can always make.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a definitely quick dish. We're gonna see you
- 4:49Speaker 1: get in the kitchen. So what are you gonna be
- 4:50Speaker 1: making today for us?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Man? Come? On, man, we just do the cheese, grits,
- 4:55Speaker 2: doing the eggs, and we're doing these little banquet sausages.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Tell everybody how you wanted to cook these meals?
- 5:01Speaker 2: Oh you can? What do you mean I wanted?
- 5:03Speaker 1: You wanted to cook the turkey saucial? Just explain to it.
- 5:07Speaker 2: You first of all, give them context because context is important.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I said, you said, you said it's gonna I don't
- 5:14Speaker 2: know how good a cook you are. You assaulted me first,
- 5:16Speaker 2: that's the first thing you did. If you assaulted me first.
- 5:19Speaker 2: He said, I don't know how good cook you are.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I don't know if you're gonna be able to you know, cooking. Yeah. Yeah,
- 5:25Speaker 2: And you were like, we could do it in the
- 5:26Speaker 2: microwave with the and I was like, I could do
- 5:29Speaker 2: the eggs. Eggs ain't nothing, but that's a little risk game.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And indeed, I said we could put them in the
- 5:34Speaker 2: microwave if it was necessary.
- 5:36Speaker 1: But you were talking like a professional.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Yeah, you wrap them in a wet paper time. Yeah.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Do you eat hot dogs?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Not really?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Okay, did you ever eat hot dogs?
- 5:47Speaker 1: I'm Jamaican? Not really?
- 5:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah, y'all probably called them dog feed in them out. Yeah,
- 5:59Speaker 2: y'all wouldn't.
- 6:00Speaker 1: No, no, not at all. But and we definitely cooking
- 6:05Speaker 1: food in a micoy if I'll tell you that much.
- 6:07Speaker 1: That's the thing we do not do.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, but look, this is this is not at
- 6:12Speaker 2: the house. This is when you in the world. This
- 6:15Speaker 2: is once you in the world. You wrap these bad
- 6:18Speaker 2: boys because that's how you know. You all you call
- 6:20Speaker 2: food bad boys, so.
- 6:22Speaker 1: You keep you keep saying it.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you're gonna get you a few of the bad boys.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Wrap them up in the wet paper towel, throw them
- 6:30Speaker 2: bitches in the microwave. Boom, boop that.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Bitch thirty seconds.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Yeah, two boots because you gotta clear twice, right, clear, clear,
- 6:42Speaker 2: and then boop it because you don't want to because
- 6:44Speaker 2: sometimes it depends that that one minute you put it
- 6:48Speaker 2: on that minute and you're like, okay, cool, you need
- 6:51Speaker 2: to put the like you said, thirty thirty, then test it. Yep,
- 6:55Speaker 2: and that's thirty and then test it because if you
- 6:58Speaker 2: do that one minute and then you over now you're mad.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Oh hell, Now you say if it's turkey, because turkey, because.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Turkey, and I do not know what part of the
- 7:07Speaker 2: Turkey this is. Because these I think they like maybe
- 7:11Speaker 2: two ninety nine now or two something.
- 7:13Speaker 1: It was like three bucks.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yeah, Mark, Yeah, they used to be ninety eight cent.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I remember that.
- 7:18Speaker 2: They this part of the turkey, the gobbler. They got
- 7:22Speaker 2: to be made out of that ninety eight cents. How
- 7:24Speaker 2: many is in there? Ten? It's ten sausages? Is it ten?
- 7:29Speaker 1: Three links? Three?
- 7:30Speaker 2: Yes?
- 7:31Speaker 1: Ten, it's yep. Ten. If that ain't, no, let's just
- 7:36Speaker 1: see if there's actual meat in it.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Though.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yep, here we go turkey, mechanically separated turkey. Yeah, it's
- 7:43Speaker 1: definitely the goblet, the gobble gobble, the gobble goobble. It
- 7:48Speaker 1: has a bunch of other stuff in it.
- 7:49Speaker 2: All right, So we eat the rest of the turkeys.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Start cooking, chef, let's do it. Get to whipping, let's
- 7:54Speaker 1: do it.
- 7:54Speaker 2: So these plugged up, how these go? I gotta do
- 7:57Speaker 2: something special? I don't. I never worked with an unattached stove.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Got me on a bowling stove. I ain't never work
- 8:05Speaker 2: on the bowling stove.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Look if it starts smoking, though, we got the fire
- 8:09Speaker 1: stinguisher all day.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Okay, bet the grits. We already made the grits, now,
- 8:13Speaker 2: the cheese grits.
- 8:14Speaker 1: It was instant gris here, I'll set up I'll set
- 8:18Speaker 1: some paper towels.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Sonny just watched it.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Get your butter involved.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I guess, I guess how it will work today.
- 8:34Speaker 2: You're gonna work just just with wiping down with da
- 8:38Speaker 2: oh yeah, get them they can go in.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Here, all right, and then you already heated. We did
- 8:43Speaker 1: do the grits in the microwave for all your listeners.
- 8:53Speaker 1: So we're having eggs, turkey sausage. Your ingredients are eggs, turkey, sausage, cheese, salt, pepper.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And I did put you through the microwaveable grits. I
- 9:04Speaker 1: had zero faith that Clayton could cook at all. At all,
- 9:08Speaker 1: at all, I said, at all. I called Sonny, I said, Sonny,
- 9:12Speaker 1: what is he trying to make this breakfast?
- 9:14Speaker 2: But then I told you this this just to get
- 9:17Speaker 2: you through.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Take me back to what was going on. How many
- 9:21Speaker 1: kids in your family, single mom household?
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah, we had my dad there at first, and then
- 9:28Speaker 2: as life goes, he wasn't and you know, left.
- 9:33Speaker 1: But at what point did he disappeared disappear or did
- 9:36Speaker 1: he No, he would appear.
- 9:38Speaker 2: You see him trying to get on hold at all,
- 9:42Speaker 2: trying to be cool. You might see him out in
- 9:46Speaker 2: the world, see that. That's that's the thing you see
- 9:49Speaker 2: your dad?
- 9:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and how old were you when.
- 9:53Speaker 2: He left when they split up out? Probably middle school? Okay,
- 9:56Speaker 2: so probably I'd say around sixth seventh grade. But my
- 10:00Speaker 2: little brother probably had it rougher than me.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Okay, why do you think he had it rougher? I
- 10:05Speaker 1: would assume the oldest would have it rougher.
- 10:07Speaker 2: I just this ain't on. I don't think this was on. Yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 2: I mean, it's three dollars. You was gonna take them home?
- 10:17Speaker 1: All right. So Papa Duke's left and you're saying that
- 10:21Speaker 1: you felt like your brother had it harder than you
- 10:23Speaker 1: when he left.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I just think so because he didn't get the
- 10:26Speaker 2: same But like my little brother seven years younger, so
- 10:30Speaker 2: he didn't get necessarily the good times. Okay, with you
- 10:35Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, my pops and stuff like, you know,
- 10:38Speaker 2: we were doing a lot of moving around, and so
- 10:41Speaker 2: when we finally got you know, situated, he didn't have
- 10:45Speaker 2: the same type of experience that I got to get,
- 10:48Speaker 2: you know, But that's just my perspective. He might have
- 10:51Speaker 2: been he might have loved it.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I that with my little brother because he was the
- 10:54Speaker 1: same age difference, like seven years that pops left us
- 10:57Speaker 1: older three knew him. But then my little brother did
- 11:05Speaker 1: take it harder with my dad left.
- 11:07Speaker 2: And we was like, yeah, because y'all a little more
- 11:10Speaker 2: grown y'all he had.
- 11:12Speaker 1: He definitely went do a little daddy as she phased,
- 11:15Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Well, you know, kids, little kids, they still looking up
- 11:18Speaker 2: to their parents and superheroes and different phases. You need
- 11:22Speaker 2: your mom at a certain point and then you need
- 11:25Speaker 2: your pops at a certain Yeah.
- 11:27Speaker 1: But so then he left. He didn't move down the
- 11:29Speaker 1: street and you see him on the regular or he
- 11:31Speaker 1: just left it.
- 11:32Speaker 2: No, he was still in the city.
- 11:35Speaker 1: You keep saying in the city, meaning like you saw.
- 11:38Speaker 2: In the city. Yeah, I'm just la but yeah, naw.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Okay, so you grew up with your mom. This becomes
- 11:44Speaker 1: a staple item. Is what is she doing for work
- 11:47Speaker 1: at the time.
- 11:48Speaker 2: She used to work for IBM, Like she worked her
- 11:50Speaker 2: way up from the bottom, like as far as like
- 11:53Speaker 2: just being a regular secretary. So like high level management.
- 11:58Speaker 2: That's why we's moving around and stuff.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Okay, okay, So were you guys middle class?
- 12:03Speaker 2: Yeah I would say that, but you know that middle class.
- 12:07Speaker 2: I would be like I told her all one time.
- 12:12Speaker 2: She was like, well, the job's gonna get us more
- 12:15Speaker 2: money and this she explained it to me, and I'm like,
- 12:19Speaker 2: I said something to the fact, Yeah, you make more money,
- 12:24Speaker 2: but we can't get most ship. The money you make
- 12:27Speaker 2: already go through the ship we got. You know what.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Middle class is like to me, I feel like it's
- 12:36Speaker 1: almost better if you're poor than middle class because middle
- 12:39Speaker 1: class you're not getting any breaks, so all your money
- 12:42Speaker 1: is just going.
- 12:42Speaker 2: To keeping you right in there, just to keep you
- 12:45Speaker 2: exactly yeah, And I mean, yeah, it's good on paper
- 12:49Speaker 2: and everything. And we didn't want for nothing, so that's
- 12:52Speaker 2: that's beautiful part of it.
- 12:53Speaker 1: But breakfast for lunch.
- 12:58Speaker 2: You never breakfast for dinner.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Breakfast for dinner. I don't know why I keep going
- 13:02Speaker 1: on one.
- 13:03Speaker 2: It's about that time, yeah it is.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I thought. I was actually like, oh, my first meal
- 13:08Speaker 1: of the day is going to be breakfast with Clayton.
- 13:10Speaker 1: I wanted everyone to focus in on how he's making
- 13:12Speaker 1: these eggs because he said he's going to do rolled
- 13:15Speaker 1: special eggs and I've never seen this, but it just
- 13:19Speaker 1: looks like an omelet that he's pushing back.
- 13:21Speaker 2: You just roll them. You see how I rolled?
- 13:24Speaker 1: It looks like it, But do you know the inside
- 13:27Speaker 1: is going to.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Be cooked, because we're gonna do it all the way
- 13:30Speaker 2: it's gonna look.
- 13:32Speaker 1: It looks like for all y'all listeners out there, it
- 13:34Speaker 1: just looks like he's taking an omelet and just peeling
- 13:38Speaker 1: back your line.
- 13:39Speaker 2: If if you want to know what I'm doing, if
- 13:41Speaker 2: you've ever been to one of them hotels where they
- 13:44Speaker 2: got the breakfast bar and the little omelet bar, that's
- 13:46Speaker 2: what I'm doing. That's what I'm doing. I just ain't
- 13:50Speaker 2: got no.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Ingredients, but usually they just folded and oh, I see
- 13:53Speaker 1: what you're saying. Okay, got it? Okay, educated ignorance, Come on,
- 13:57Speaker 1: all right, come on, So growing up, when did you
- 14:01Speaker 1: start to develop a passion for entertainment?
- 14:04Speaker 2: Man? I think I just always love stand up comedy.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Like my parents let me watch specials earlier. We always
- 14:10Speaker 2: had like some type of cable or something.
- 14:13Speaker 1: So I've never seen eggs cook like this. I knew
- 14:18Speaker 1: the Lord was saying.
- 14:19Speaker 2: He can't cook. Come on, he can't cook.
- 14:21Speaker 1: It on, I mean, he just dumped half a bag
- 14:25Speaker 1: of cheese. He's in the cook eggs.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Watch this, then you are.
- 14:32Speaker 1: You going in on this this meal press? Oh my goodness,
- 14:38Speaker 1: I feel like we're gonna have to be in the
- 14:40Speaker 1: bathroom after this.
- 14:42Speaker 2: I mean we eating turkey. God looks. I don't know
- 14:46Speaker 2: what you experience because watch this.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Have you ever heard I have never had an egg
- 14:54Speaker 1: like this.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Checking on the delicious it's gonna be.
- 15:00Speaker 1: It looks good, but it definitely.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Looks raw raw. It is not at all.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Now, I've never had an egg like hold on, hold on.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Because I gotta get this side brown.
- 15:13Speaker 1: So comedy was something that was always playing in the
- 15:16Speaker 1: background in your household.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Yeah, man, my parents just let me watch specials, HBO specials.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Just don't say this in school. Just don't say this
- 15:22Speaker 2: on the bus. And I'm on the bus saying the
- 15:25Speaker 2: same shit I just heard. I'm cussing all types of shit.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I'm saying cuse words. I don't even know what some
- 15:31Speaker 2: of the shit I'm saying means. See, and I'm busting
- 15:34Speaker 2: right there in the middle.
- 15:35Speaker 1: No teachers calling them up and saying, hey, your son
- 15:38Speaker 1: said this.
- 15:39Speaker 2: No, I wasn't getting in trouble like that, like I
- 15:41Speaker 2: would know not to say it, like to the teacher.
- 15:44Speaker 1: No, but I'm saying, Oh, I see what you're saying. Okay,
- 15:49Speaker 1: look at this.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Mm hmm. Come on now, past all right, come on now,
- 15:53Speaker 2: come on now.
- 15:55Speaker 1: How's your sausage coming.
- 15:56Speaker 2: He's probably burned up. I forgot about them to tell
- 15:59Speaker 2: you that, true, I forgot that was on yo.
- 16:02Speaker 1: They got a skunk street on a streak on them.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, they gonna be a little These are actually
- 16:08Speaker 2: burnt in. We haven't burnt in turkeys austice. And that's
- 16:14Speaker 2: another day. Yo.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Those things look black.
- 16:17Speaker 2: They look it's one part. It's just one part. You know,
- 16:21Speaker 2: you can scrape that part off.
- 16:23Speaker 1: It's fine.
- 16:23Speaker 2: It's fine black people to scrape some ship.
- 16:26Speaker 1: When you buy these fully cooked, pre fully cooked turkey links,
- 16:30Speaker 1: do you feel like a part of you just has
- 16:33Speaker 1: to overcook it just to make sure it's not it's
- 16:37Speaker 1: not raw? Because I feel like when I buy these,
- 16:40Speaker 1: I always have to overcook them.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Yeah, because how we know they cooked? They didn't even
- 16:44Speaker 2: cook it to eat, like they cooked it the freeze.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Like.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'm not going with the minimal dog out. Yeah. Yeah,
- 16:52Speaker 2: you gotta burn them.
- 16:53Speaker 1: You gotta burn them. Okay, all right, let's get your grits.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Grits right here. It might be a little chili.
- 17:00Speaker 1: These grits look like I don't know. That's how they're
- 17:02Speaker 1: supposed to look.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Sonny took them. We gotta we're gonna put that on Sunday. Now,
- 17:08Speaker 2: we did microwave them grits.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Now, yeah, we microwave these, But I don't know. These
- 17:14Speaker 1: look like I don't know. That's not how grits supposed
- 17:16Speaker 1: to look. We're gonna play play and not Sonny.
- 17:18Speaker 2: But instant grits ain't never gonna be real.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Like water or something because you was doing the measuring.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Lines what we put to in there.
- 17:25Speaker 1: All right, let's try your eggs.
- 17:27Speaker 2: All right, I'm gonna eat these grip Oh yeah, these
- 17:31Speaker 2: grips need some jail house grits. Grits.
- 17:36Speaker 1: You're gonna pour some water on them grits.
- 17:39Speaker 2: How the egg now? How the egg now? How the eggs? Now? Eggs? Now?
- 17:48Speaker 2: Come on, come on, these.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Are gonna be my top eggs.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 17:53Speaker 1: You can make some eggs mm hmm.
- 17:55Speaker 2: You can make you go through crazy with the salt.
- 17:58Speaker 1: It's not dry or anything. It's tell of moist.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Come on, okay, come on, see the thing is they need.
- 18:07Speaker 2: I can't even give it to you. That grey. You
- 18:10Speaker 2: gotta cook a little more. But the thing is it's
- 18:14Speaker 2: gonna cook outside the stove. Once you get it off
- 18:19Speaker 2: the boneless stove, it's still gonna cook.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I think you make phenomenal eggs. Honestly, come on, I
- 18:26Speaker 1: talk all that smacks. That's a ten out of ten egg.
- 18:28Speaker 1: But you should turn off your burner.
- 18:31Speaker 2: There we go, No, not that burning both of them,
- 18:34Speaker 2: the other, the one with nothing in it, the empty one.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Hold on, there we go, hold on this one.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Okay, so you're growing up in this household. At what
- 18:47Speaker 1: point do you say? I want to take howmedy serious?
- 18:50Speaker 1: How old are you?
- 18:51Speaker 2: Man? I'm grown at this point, But I'm making people
- 18:54Speaker 2: laugh like the whole time. I'm not knowing comedy is
- 18:57Speaker 2: a thing that you can do. Like I looked at
- 19:00Speaker 2: comedy like, oh, you got to go to New York,
- 19:02Speaker 2: you gotta go to LA. You gotta be at one
- 19:05Speaker 2: of these plays I see on TV. I didn't think
- 19:07Speaker 2: it was a thing. But I'm having sleepovers where I'm
- 19:11Speaker 2: ripping just talking about the teacher, you know what I'm
- 19:14Speaker 2: saying to where the kid I'm like in like second
- 19:16Speaker 2: third grade. Her older brother and older sisters like, man,
- 19:18Speaker 2: he gotta come back, Like I'm getting booked for sleepovers
- 19:22Speaker 2: as a kid, you know what I like? You know,
- 19:25Speaker 2: people waiting for me to show up and talk shit.
- 19:27Speaker 2: And I didn't even realize I was doing it the
- 19:29Speaker 2: whole time. But I was in college and that's when
- 19:32Speaker 2: people were like, man, you should do comedy. You funny,
- 19:34Speaker 2: you should do comedy. That's when they started telling me.
- 19:36Speaker 2: And I was like, okay, well let me see what
- 19:38Speaker 2: was about. And I went to a comedy club in
- 19:39Speaker 2: Tallahassee and it was the saddest shit I ever seen it.
- 19:45Speaker 2: It was in a hotel, it was nobody in there,
- 19:49Speaker 2: It smelt like meal. Dude. The dude on stage wasn't funny.
- 19:53Speaker 2: He was like one of the older comedians. His suit
- 19:55Speaker 2: was dirty. You know what I'm saying. I'm just like, oh, hell, like,
- 19:59Speaker 2: this is not this is not my idea. What stand
- 20:02Speaker 2: up is if this is like I don't I don't
- 20:04Speaker 2: think I'm doing it. This is your first time, this
- 20:07Speaker 2: is my first time going sit to see it, and
- 20:09Speaker 2: so I kind of like wrote it off, but I
- 20:11Speaker 2: was still, this is your first.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Time going to actually see a live stand, but not
- 20:15Speaker 1: as a I want to do my first open mic.
- 20:19Speaker 2: I just went to see because people kept saying so
- 20:21Speaker 2: they had this one comedy club down there in Tellhaff
- 20:23Speaker 2: and I went and I was like, nah, this ain't
- 20:27Speaker 2: you know. I don't think I'm gonna do this. And
- 20:30Speaker 2: then like when I got back to Atlanta and it
- 20:33Speaker 2: was still nagging me, like, man, you gotta at least
- 20:35Speaker 2: try it. Don't never don't get out there and then
- 20:39Speaker 2: get old and be like, I wonder what it would
- 20:40Speaker 2: have been like if I would have gave.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Me And how old are you at this point?
- 20:43Speaker 2: It's probably like twenty okay, twenty five.
- 20:48Speaker 1: So are you telling your parents any or anybody, like, Hey,
- 20:51Speaker 1: I'm thinking about this.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Not till I started doing it, not till I was
- 20:57Speaker 2: after you graduated college. This is it. Did you not
- 21:03Speaker 2: hear what I said? No, but no I didn't graduate.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Okay, but this is after you started college.
- 21:10Speaker 2: This is after I started college and I came back home. Okay,
- 21:13Speaker 2: that's when I started hitting the scene.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Now, how do you break the news? Hey, mom, I'm
- 21:17Speaker 1: dropping out of school and by the way, I want
- 21:20Speaker 1: to pursue comedy.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Well, part of it was dropping out because I was
- 21:23Speaker 2: paying for it. We were gonna have to pay for
- 21:25Speaker 2: the one. No more money to pay for it. So
- 21:27Speaker 2: it's like, if you're going down there, and if you're
- 21:29Speaker 2: not and she if you're not serious you down there,
- 21:32Speaker 2: you know, playing around, then you need to come on
- 21:35Speaker 2: and get there, you know. So it's like, all right, well,
- 21:38Speaker 2: let me go back to Atlanta. And then also I
- 21:41Speaker 2: was like, I think I can get more things happening.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Like I was majoring in communication and I had a
- 21:46Speaker 2: radio show at FAM you on ninety point five, and
- 21:49Speaker 2: they radio station is an actual FM station, like it's
- 21:53Speaker 2: always like the number two or number three station in
- 21:56Speaker 2: the city, like on hip hop and stuff. So I
- 21:58Speaker 2: was like, well, come to Atlanta, think about doing something
- 22:01Speaker 2: with that. And then the comedy just hit and I
- 22:04Speaker 2: just once I started figuring out, Okay, this is what
- 22:07Speaker 2: I want to do, I was like, yeah, I think
- 22:09Speaker 2: you know, I want to do comedy. My dad was
- 22:11Speaker 2: the worst. He was like, oh, yeah, that's funny. He
- 22:14Speaker 2: was like, he's like, yeah, you're comedian, all right, talking
- 22:19Speaker 2: about you want to do comedy. Yeah, that's the funniest
- 22:22Speaker 2: shit I never heard you say. Like he was on
- 22:24Speaker 2: my ass about that. Shit.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Every time you talk to him, he just bringing it up.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he just be well. I mean when I told him,
- 22:31Speaker 2: he was like so comedy okay, yeah, okay, Like.
- 22:36Speaker 1: How long did it take for him to like kind
- 22:38Speaker 1: of come around and actually like old shit, like that
- 22:42Speaker 1: old ship? You got something here?
- 22:44Speaker 2: Once? I probably got on TV and one are.
- 22:47Speaker 1: You talking about the time he won?
- 22:49Speaker 2: No, this is like I probably was on TV like
- 22:52Speaker 2: a year or two in. It wasn't no big thing,
- 22:54Speaker 2: but it was like a table channel. Well no, it was,
- 22:58Speaker 2: uh yeah okay. So and then when I got the
- 23:01Speaker 2: house of paying thing, I think he was like okay,
- 23:04Speaker 2: maybe he really, because he started putting shows together for me,
- 23:07Speaker 2: like yeah.
- 23:08Speaker 1: While he was clowning or after no, after.
- 23:10Speaker 2: He saw I was doing it, he was like, well,
- 23:12Speaker 2: we're doing a jazz show down here, why don't you
- 23:14Speaker 2: And they said we get in the comedian and I
- 23:16Speaker 2: said it's hill my son and comedian get him on this,
- 23:19Speaker 2: or like yeah, so like yeah, he do me in
- 23:21Speaker 2: the mix.
- 23:21Speaker 1: And how did it feel to see him turn around
- 23:24Speaker 1: like that?
- 23:24Speaker 2: Oh? It was great? And my mom she was never
- 23:27Speaker 2: not again, never against it or for it. She's just
- 23:30Speaker 2: a show me, yeah, show me Mom, okay, okay, if
- 23:34Speaker 2: you say that's what you go do, Okay, go do it.
- 23:36Speaker 1: I like that. It feels like between both of them
- 23:38Speaker 1: there you had good support.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Yeah, but they not coming out to every show, and
- 23:44Speaker 2: I'm not no comedian that's inviting everybody out.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Well, some people don't like it when like family shows
- 23:49Speaker 1: up because it can throw your set off a little.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Bit, right, Yeah, especially if you talked about it.
- 23:53Speaker 1: I was gonna say. I heard comic say like talking
- 23:57Speaker 1: back about they bob and they bobsed it the audience. Yeah,
- 24:00Speaker 1: going home to a quiet.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Night, Yeah, mom be mad like.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Like that's how you really feel.
- 24:07Speaker 2: I've seen people's mama's heckle. No way, yes, because it
- 24:11Speaker 2: ain't like what they were saying. That's not what happened,
- 24:14Speaker 2: you like, oh.
- 24:17Speaker 1: The whole now all.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Right, get you to these bad boys. A little burn up,
- 24:24Speaker 2: burn up, thank you.
- 24:26Speaker 1: They look a little less. Let's see, they look like, man,
- 24:31Speaker 1: this can't be real.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Meat, this gyro meet turkey play. It ain't got bad,
- 24:40Speaker 2: ain't bad like breakfast sausage.
- 24:42Speaker 1: This is dinner at Clayton's house.
- 24:46Speaker 2: In the past. Not no more, no more. Okay, we
- 24:51Speaker 2: in costco.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Now, did you say we in Costco.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Now we in Costco?
- 24:56Speaker 1: Now were in Costco?
- 24:57Speaker 2: Were in there?
- 24:58Speaker 1: What you mean?
- 24:58Speaker 2: I'll be there? What you Costco shopping? Y'all got Costco?
- 25:03Speaker 1: Got Costco? By the way, did you know Costco does
- 25:06Speaker 1: amazing on rental cars? And I just learned about that.
- 25:11Speaker 1: And vacations and vacations. Have you done vacations to They
- 25:16Speaker 1: do hotels and trip Did you know they had.
- 25:19Speaker 2: He's sounding see this old people. It's old people. Go
- 25:22Speaker 2: out right here, it's grown. Oh shit, I got one
- 25:26Speaker 2: bad boys out of They had like a half a
- 25:32Speaker 2: year's season pass to Universal Orlando for like one seventy nine.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Get the freak out person.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Yes, is that a good deal for a season pass? Oh?
- 25:42Speaker 1: For a season pass for like.
- 25:44Speaker 2: The second half of the year, like through Costco? Yes day?
- 25:48Speaker 2: You know how much it costs to go down to Disney.
- 25:50Speaker 2: I took my son down there already.
- 25:52Speaker 1: No listen, breakfast for them, you know, for the aquariums
- 25:58Speaker 1: and stuff. There's a I know, find you a military person.
- 26:03Speaker 1: They have like hella like almost like free pretty much
- 26:07Speaker 1: at the quariums.
- 26:08Speaker 2: You're gonna get arrested.
- 26:09Speaker 1: No for real, No, No, I don't say I call
- 26:13Speaker 1: them up, and I say, Yo, we should go to
- 26:15Speaker 1: the aquarium. You know they have a special for what
- 26:18Speaker 1: do they call veterans. Yeah, And I'm like, yo, we
- 26:20Speaker 1: need to go before it expires. So we're all going, okay,
- 26:24Speaker 1: we need that veteran pass.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Oh, so you get them to go with I get
- 26:27Speaker 2: them to go.
- 26:29Speaker 1: It's super hooked up there. That's a good plug if
- 26:34Speaker 1: you got a kid, that's the hub.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Absolutely. Yeah, you got to buy something in there.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Yeah, when you go in there, you're gonna lose all
- 26:40Speaker 1: your money.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Anyways, you gotta buy something.
- 26:42Speaker 1: I don't do Disney and none of that stuff I got.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I gotta find an employee.
- 26:46Speaker 2: That's that's where you go.
- 26:47Speaker 1: You got to get the employee to walk you and
- 26:49Speaker 1: put some passes on. And that's how you know.
- 26:52Speaker 2: I'm a real old g I just I wouldn't. I
- 26:55Speaker 2: did it on a whim too, which is the worst
- 26:56Speaker 2: way to do it.
- 26:58Speaker 1: And you just pulled up tickets pretty much.
- 27:02Speaker 2: I bought them online.
- 27:03Speaker 1: That's how we know you.
- 27:04Speaker 2: You excelled the well. We already had like a resort.
- 27:09Speaker 2: We were staying there down there, so like it was
- 27:12Speaker 2: my son's mom, her mom, they had already had and
- 27:15Speaker 2: so I'm like.
- 27:15Speaker 1: We're down here, yeah, live it up. We're not eating
- 27:21Speaker 1: breakfast for dinner.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Yeah. But at first I tried to be cheap. I
- 27:24Speaker 2: was like, let's go Lego Land. And then I look
- 27:30Speaker 2: at the Lego Land price.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I was like, well, god, I thought your son's under five?
- 27:33Speaker 1: How are you getting into Lego? Lego Land is for
- 27:36Speaker 1: bigger kids. Okay, we're getting off topic.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Hold up, that's how I saw it.
- 27:41Speaker 1: But yeah, Lego Land once it was a waste of
- 27:44Speaker 1: my money because my kids a midget.
- 27:45Speaker 2: I'm glad once I once I saw the price, I
- 27:47Speaker 2: was like, it's not that different, Like you go.
- 27:49Speaker 1: To Lego Lands. Oh, you would have been pissed because
- 27:51Speaker 1: they can knot get on rides under five.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Because I was like, this is not that big a difference, Like, damn,
- 27:56Speaker 2: the kids price is the same, but the adult price.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I was like, who knows women go down here? Yeah? Yeah?
- 28:01Speaker 1: Okay, okay, good move, good play, good play.
- 28:03Speaker 2: All right.
- 28:04Speaker 1: So going back to your story, Okay, you're doing stand
- 28:08Speaker 1: up comedy. What's your first real big break where you're like,
- 28:11Speaker 1: I'm starting to build momentum.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Oh Man, Robert Townsend Partners in Crime. So that's an
- 28:19Speaker 2: old comedy show from back in the day. He brought
- 28:22Speaker 2: it back. I cannot remember the name of the network,
- 28:26Speaker 2: but he had bought a network here in Atlanta, like
- 28:28Speaker 2: a cable network, and so he was they was doing
- 28:31Speaker 2: comedy auditions and I got on there pretty early on
- 28:35Speaker 2: in comedy, and then I did my little set on there.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Then the next thing that's probably Who's Got Jokes? I
- 28:42Speaker 2: think I got on there, and then when House and
- 28:44Speaker 2: Pain hit, I think that's when I was like, oh, okay,
- 28:47Speaker 2: I might got something here because that was my first
- 28:50Speaker 2: acting ever. Okay, and every comedian in Atlanta was at
- 28:54Speaker 2: that audition. I just remember being at that audition like,
- 28:57Speaker 2: oh damn dang like and it was like, oh, it.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Made me like lock in And what were the checks
- 29:03Speaker 1: looking like from that.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Then or now? Because those residuals them new ones, man.
- 29:16Speaker 1: So let's talk about then and then we'll talk about it.
- 29:19Speaker 2: So then I'm gonna shout out Tyler Perry. He always
- 29:21Speaker 2: paid fare. From what I saw, it was, you know,
- 29:27Speaker 2: it was probably the minimum for a guest role. This
- 29:29Speaker 2: is just a guest role. I wasn't even a recurring
- 29:31Speaker 2: role yet, so a guest role, but one thing I
- 29:33Speaker 2: can say is every time I go back there, they
- 29:36Speaker 2: pay me a little bit more. Yeah. So the episodes
- 29:41Speaker 2: now look a lot better than the episodes you know,
- 29:45Speaker 2: starting out, And it hasn't and it hasn't had to
- 29:47Speaker 2: be no real tough negotiating to get that. From my
- 29:52Speaker 2: experience with him is this is. Hey, look, this is
- 29:55Speaker 2: what we're paying now. This is and it lines up
- 29:58Speaker 2: with what other people say in the industry too. Yeah.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I've heard some pretty incredible stories from actors that
- 30:02Speaker 1: work for him. Yeah, life changing stories.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean my life it changed. It could change
- 30:08Speaker 2: something now, yeah, I could always because you know, I
- 30:11Speaker 2: was on the show, but I'm still waiting.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Tables while you're on the show.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Yeah. This lady was like, aren't you on that show?
- 30:19Speaker 2: And I was like yeah. She was like, you must
- 30:21Speaker 2: have messed your money up you waiting tables, and I
- 30:24Speaker 2: was like, bitch, ain't on every episode, Like you know
- 30:28Speaker 2: what I like, Now I'm about to get fired because
- 30:30Speaker 2: I just snapped this lady or yeah. Like I had
- 30:34Speaker 2: to catch myself because I was like I would have
- 30:37Speaker 2: left to see that. I was like, ma'am, if you
- 30:41Speaker 2: don't get your ass like I was like.
- 30:43Speaker 1: You know, I'm bringing your food to it.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I still got I still got to get
- 30:48Speaker 2: your train is still in the back, man, say that
- 30:54Speaker 2: ship to me. Now. I was bad, though, I was bad,
- 30:57Speaker 2: but it was also like like I was responded how
- 31:00Speaker 2: I was like, I'm not on every episode, right, you.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Know, but you're starting to get a taste of what
- 31:04Speaker 1: it looks like versus because some people when they you know,
- 31:07Speaker 1: when you first book, you're like, oh my god, my
- 31:09Speaker 1: life's about to change and see everything and you're like,
- 31:12Speaker 1: this is the tipping point. Yeah, but not all the
- 31:14Speaker 1: time in this industry, it's the tipping point. Maybe it's
- 31:16Speaker 1: just a little bit of a what do you call it,
- 31:18Speaker 1: like almost like an encouragement bump, right, Yeah, it's just is.
- 31:23Speaker 2: To let you know you're going the right direction. It's
- 31:25Speaker 2: almost like a mile marker. Yeah, you know, it's like, okay,
- 31:28Speaker 2: you did that. Because people are putting limitations on you, yeah,
- 31:31Speaker 2: and tell you where you're supposed to be at this
- 31:34Speaker 2: year and what And I always I never believe none
- 31:38Speaker 2: of that. Just starting comedy in Atlanta, you know, just
- 31:40Speaker 2: the stories we would hear from the older people, like
- 31:44Speaker 2: they would always say Chris Tucker blew up with only
- 31:46Speaker 2: fifteen minutes worth of comedy, So like like this is
- 31:52Speaker 2: what some of the that's what they used to say.
- 31:56Speaker 2: But he only had fifteen minutes when he took off,
- 31:59Speaker 2: and he took off.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Yeah he did crazy, he did.
- 32:02Speaker 2: And what I learned from the ogs was that's all
- 32:04Speaker 2: he needed. Can't nobody put a limit on you when
- 32:07Speaker 2: it's time for you to blow or whatever? You know
- 32:10Speaker 2: what I'm saying. Nobody can tell you the time frame.
- 32:12Speaker 2: How can somebody else tell you the timeframe for what
- 32:16Speaker 2: God has for you? You know? So, yeah, he had
- 32:20Speaker 2: fifteen minutes, but in them fifteen minutes he got a
- 32:22Speaker 2: standing ovation. He did what it takes you forty five
- 32:26Speaker 2: minutes to get close to in fifteen So what are
- 32:30Speaker 2: you really talking? You understand? Like, how are you looking
- 32:33Speaker 2: at it? And so I never put any stock into
- 32:36Speaker 2: people being like, oh man, you gotta be five years
- 32:38Speaker 2: in before you even ready for TV. You gotta be
- 32:41Speaker 2: seven years in before you And it's like.
- 32:43Speaker 1: You said from Jump you werre never did that, never
- 32:45Speaker 1: did what put the limitations?
- 32:48Speaker 2: Yeah, well I learned that early on, like just in
- 32:51Speaker 2: the comedy game, because people will be like how long
- 32:53Speaker 2: you been doing it. Oh yeah, yeah, you see, once
- 32:56Speaker 2: you start doing it for about two years, then you
- 32:59Speaker 2: and they'll tell you. And some of it is I'm
- 33:02Speaker 2: only taking advice that makes sense to me.
- 33:05Speaker 1: I'm a believer of the ten years because I know
- 33:08Speaker 1: I'm a big one. Like, choose your ten. It's either
- 33:12Speaker 1: your twenties, your thirties or forties, whatever, choose your ten,
- 33:15Speaker 1: go harder, go home, and pretty much kick comfort, the comfort, dream, lush,
- 33:22Speaker 1: whatever makes you sleep better at night, right the I
- 33:25Speaker 1: gotta live on my by my own or drive the
- 33:27Speaker 1: latest car, Like if that's in your ten era, like
- 33:30Speaker 1: your comfortable, then you're not in your ten. Your ten
- 33:34Speaker 1: has to be like you know, I'm sleeping on the
- 33:36Speaker 1: air mattress. I got the frontier flight. But we're here
- 33:41Speaker 1: and we ate a spice of pizza today. You know,
- 33:44Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying.
- 33:44Speaker 2: I'm eating at the comedy club.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I mean the comedy club.
- 33:47Speaker 2: When I did that first TV appearance, I had I
- 33:50Speaker 2: think I needed like I needed some money to get gas.
- 33:54Speaker 2: I only had like ten dollars in my bank account.
- 33:58Speaker 2: I knew of one bank. They were the ATM would
- 34:01Speaker 2: give you ten dollars and I was like, I don't
- 34:04Speaker 2: even know if they're gonna be open because it was
- 34:06Speaker 2: in the plaza where my mom worked, you know what
- 34:08Speaker 2: I'm saying. And I was like, the gate might be down.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Luckily the gate was up, and it was like, so, yeah,
- 34:14Speaker 2: it's like them little moments are like just grant like
- 34:17Speaker 2: this ten dollars got me on TV and another check
- 34:20Speaker 2: and I didn't have nothing when I had it, but
- 34:22Speaker 2: this ten got me paid five and whatever I got,
- 34:25Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 34:26Speaker 1: So that's cool that you have those stories, But do
- 34:28Speaker 1: you believe that in comedy that you need that ten
- 34:35Speaker 1: even I'm not saying.
- 34:36Speaker 2: That, so I mean, I think I'm almost proof of that,
- 34:40Speaker 2: Like you mean like the ten years.
- 34:41Speaker 1: I think you need ten years in comedy. So I mean,
- 34:43Speaker 1: I'm sure there's exceptions to the rule, right.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, there's plenty of exceptions. But I won last
- 34:49Speaker 2: comic standing about nine ten years in nine ten years.
- 34:53Speaker 2: So yeah. So it's like, because I'm with you on
- 34:56Speaker 2: like the flight hours of and if it's something that
- 34:59Speaker 2: you love doing and you're gonna keep doing it anyway, yeah,
- 35:01Speaker 2: but put that time in. And I put so much
- 35:05Speaker 2: stage time in just around the city.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I was gonna say, Yeah, comedy is a tough career.
- 35:10Speaker 1: You're gonna you have to like work that muscle and
- 35:13Speaker 1: work who you are in comedy because there's some comics
- 35:16Speaker 1: that do the I pick on myself, and there's some
- 35:19Speaker 1: comics that are, you know, doing their worldview, and then
- 35:22Speaker 1: there's some comics that are just staying on what's going on.
- 35:26Speaker 1: But everyone has their their lane, but it takes a
- 35:29Speaker 1: while to get to that lane. Right, Yeah, what's working for.
- 35:32Speaker 2: I mean, because you're figuring yourself out. You got to
- 35:34Speaker 2: figure out who you are a lot of and then also,
- 35:37Speaker 2: you know some people are they start super young And
- 35:41Speaker 2: I used to be like, man, I wish I would
- 35:42Speaker 2: have started earlier because I'd be further and I'd be
- 35:44Speaker 2: like or I'd be dead because I'm not prepared for
- 35:51Speaker 2: what the fuck this shit? Well you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 35:53Speaker 2: you look at Dave Chappelle. Yeah, you look at Dave Chapelle.
- 35:56Speaker 2: He started when he was fourteen, started really young, That's
- 35:59Speaker 2: what I'm saying. But he also was probably mature enough
- 36:02Speaker 2: to navigate that to this point. Yeah, if I did
- 36:05Speaker 2: some shit man out my parents house at fifteen.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Yeah, who knows? And Chappelle had different type of parents,
- 36:12Speaker 1: and I think I agree with you. They're like, but
- 36:14Speaker 1: I can get that looking back, like, man, if I
- 36:16Speaker 1: would have started way younger, that shit.
- 36:18Speaker 2: You need to start when you start. And that is
- 36:20Speaker 2: the other thing in comedy. I hated being treated like
- 36:24Speaker 2: oh you and new Jack. All right, yes, I'm new
- 36:26Speaker 2: to comedy. I'm not new to the earth. You know
- 36:30Speaker 2: what I mean, Like, don't don't try to soun me
- 36:34Speaker 2: or don't try to like little kid me, because see,
- 36:37Speaker 2: because you got to learn how to a man, I
- 36:39Speaker 2: ain't gonna learn shit from your ass.
- 36:41Speaker 1: How do you treat the young ones coming up? Knowing
- 36:44Speaker 1: what you know? How you didn't like to be treated? Oh,
- 36:47Speaker 1: I you know when you see like a fresh new
- 36:50Speaker 1: meet in there, do you be like, oh oh.
- 36:53Speaker 2: I don't discourage okay, but I ain't gonna encourage either.
- 36:57Speaker 2: What if they come up and ask me, I'm not
- 37:00Speaker 2: giving out no, just like if I see you might
- 37:03Speaker 2: need it, you know what I'm saying. And then I
- 37:05Speaker 2: try not to give the fakestuff like good good ship
- 37:07Speaker 2: up there, Like if I say that like that means
- 37:10Speaker 2: good job for the effort, That don't necessarily mean your
- 37:12Speaker 2: jokes was great, you know what I'm saying. So, are you.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Familiar with Chris Spencer? Yeah, Chris Spencer. I feel like
- 37:19Speaker 1: he's he takes the time to like, oh, you know,
- 37:22Speaker 1: maybe post someone aside and say maybe you could tweak
- 37:24Speaker 1: that a little bit to adjust me. You don't feel
- 37:26Speaker 1: like you like to do that.
- 37:29Speaker 2: I don't do it unprovoked if you ask me, if
- 37:33Speaker 2: you ask me what, and then I'll say or no. Now,
- 37:36Speaker 2: if a joke is that funny, yes, I think all
- 37:39Speaker 2: comedians do that. When you said what you call it,
- 37:42Speaker 2: and then like they'll give you a tag or something
- 37:44Speaker 2: like that. Yeah, I'll do that, Like yeah, but I'm
- 37:47Speaker 2: not just you know what you need to do. They're like, no,
- 37:51Speaker 2: I'm not gonna be the mysterious motherfucker that's going Yeah.
- 37:55Speaker 1: At what point do you go full time? Full time,
- 37:57Speaker 1: no side hustles, no sign jobs, no day jobs, no waitering.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Once I started becoming a recurring role on House of Pain.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Okay, you're like, oh, I gotta take my foot off.
- 38:09Speaker 1: How good are you managing your money?
- 38:12Speaker 2: Terrible? Terrible?
- 38:14Speaker 1: So you put a day job to manage money?
- 38:16Speaker 2: Terrible, terrible because it's not like I said, I'm not. Oh,
- 38:21Speaker 2: I need a little more management, you know what I'm saying.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Like I got an apartment. Cool, that was the first step,
- 38:28Speaker 2: had a car, little car payment, cool, taking care of
- 38:31Speaker 2: a thing. But I'm also spending like I'm doing, you
- 38:37Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, what I want to do, Like, oh,
- 38:40Speaker 2: I got a show, I'm finna get a new outfit.
- 38:43Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Do you recommend that? Now? Do you still do that stuff?
- 38:46Speaker 2: Now? It depends, It depends depends on what. Like now
- 38:52Speaker 2: I have my son, so I have that in mind.
- 38:55Speaker 2: But like like I said, it'll come out every now
- 38:58Speaker 2: and then, were going to disney World, you know, but nah,
- 39:05Speaker 2: just spending on me or just going out like just
- 39:08Speaker 2: to just know, tricking off?
- 39:10Speaker 1: No, So how do you handle your money on an
- 39:12Speaker 1: unpredictable future?
- 39:14Speaker 2: Oh? I mean I try to have something, save it up,
- 39:17Speaker 2: you know, I keep saving go.
- 39:20Speaker 1: No, Oh my god, you balling, you balling. Anytime I
- 39:25Speaker 1: hear someone not living on a budget, I'm like you.
- 39:27Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 39:28Speaker 1: But you got to put yourself on a very small budget.
- 39:32Speaker 1: But to say I have no budget, that's why you
- 39:34Speaker 1: could do pop ups at.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Disneyland, But no, but it comes back to bite you. Yeah, yeah,
- 39:41Speaker 2: because you'd be like, damn, hold up. But then also
- 39:44Speaker 2: like I'm I'm also like stuff that I've done comes
- 39:48Speaker 2: back to me in ways that I always thought like
- 39:51Speaker 2: that too, And you're right, I should probably have more
- 39:53Speaker 2: of a budget in mindset. But also it's like I
- 39:58Speaker 2: did a comedy album. I did one comedy album. I
- 40:01Speaker 2: got a whole podcast just off that comedy album that
- 40:04Speaker 2: I did another one called the War on Drugs and
- 40:07Speaker 2: it was a while ago, and I did two seasons
- 40:10Speaker 2: of that. Like it's stuff I've just put out there
- 40:13Speaker 2: that's coming back. Hey, we saw you on this thing,
- 40:15Speaker 2: and I'm like that thing that didn't even get no
- 40:17Speaker 2: whole lot of views or whatever. We think you can
- 40:19Speaker 2: host it.
- 40:20Speaker 1: So it's yeah, okay, so have agents all of that.
- 40:24Speaker 2: No, I don't have a manager anymore. I still have agents.
- 40:27Speaker 2: I got rid of the management.
- 40:29Speaker 1: So are you managing yourself or you have?
- 40:31Speaker 2: Yeah, for the most part, But you know, it may
- 40:34Speaker 2: it may not. You know, it'll be somebody else talking
- 40:36Speaker 2: to you.
- 40:37Speaker 1: When did English majors come to play?
- 40:40Speaker 2: It really started in the pandemic, just because I ain't
- 40:44Speaker 2: have I was in La I couldn't get on stage.
- 40:46Speaker 2: I started going live. I started calling my fans the
- 40:49Speaker 2: English majors. That was it was in there. But the show,
- 40:52Speaker 2: the actual podcast, we've been doing what two years now,
- 40:56Speaker 2: so too, Yeah.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Okay two years? Yeah, tell us about it.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Man. It's really just the same thing I was doing
- 41:04Speaker 2: all live, ranting and just it's almost like you get
- 41:07Speaker 2: into comedy special. Every episode, I'm gonna give you an
- 41:09Speaker 2: hour plus of meat talking shit. Sometimes I have guests,
- 41:13Speaker 2: but I'm gonna talk. I'm gonna pick a topic, and
- 41:15Speaker 2: I treat the show a little bit how I do
- 41:17Speaker 2: my joke writing, just because I'll pick whatever the topic
- 41:21Speaker 2: is and that'll be the loose framework. But I try
- 41:25Speaker 2: to write jokes to exhaust all the material. Like I'll
- 41:30Speaker 2: write a joke way longer than I'll ever perform it.
- 41:33Speaker 2: So like it it's versions of jokes where when you
- 41:38Speaker 2: see it, it's me pulling the best parts out of
- 41:41Speaker 2: this subject that made sense, you know, But I'll go
- 41:44Speaker 2: all the way to the point of I wouldn't even
- 41:47Speaker 2: want to talk about this topic, you know, that long?
- 41:50Speaker 2: But yeah, so it's kind of an extension of that.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Okay, when did you and eighty five come together.
- 41:56Speaker 2: I was rocking with him when they was doing the
- 41:58Speaker 2: what you call it when they was at the Steve
- 41:59Speaker 2: Harvey thing, just because of me and low started together.
- 42:02Speaker 2: And yeah, when they.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Were at the Steve part, what do you mean the
- 42:04Speaker 1: Steve Hark there.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Used to be a Steve Harvey studio and then they
- 42:07Speaker 2: got kicked out and then yeah, that's when the podcast started.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I did not know that because I always wonder
- 42:13Speaker 1: why a lot of the because everyone everyone from eighty
- 42:16Speaker 1: five sounds like they came from Steve.
- 42:19Speaker 2: What you mean they did?
- 42:22Speaker 1: Y'all just walked out together? Is that what happened?
- 42:25Speaker 2: I don't know about them, but most of Yeah, I wouldn't.
- 42:29Speaker 2: I didn't walk out with nobody. I was working for myself.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Okay, okay, yeah, what do you have coming up right
- 42:37Speaker 1: now that we could look forward to after June?
- 42:41Speaker 2: After June is coming out in.
- 42:42Speaker 1: June twenty twenty six, Let's see what I got coming
- 42:45Speaker 1: up that we could look forward to.
- 42:48Speaker 2: I don't know if you like cartoons, I don't know
- 42:50Speaker 2: if you like anime. I don't know if you like
- 42:51Speaker 2: Meg the Stallion talk about all of that, but yeah,
- 42:54Speaker 2: she has an anime coming out. I got to do
- 42:58Speaker 2: a voice on it. I got to work with Carl
- 43:00Speaker 2: Jones from the Boondocks. Super cool. He's got an animation company,
- 43:04Speaker 2: Marsh and Blueberry. It's the coldest like he just he's
- 43:08Speaker 2: just a cool dude. I got to work with him
- 43:09Speaker 2: another time on I did some writing stuff on Tyler
- 43:12Speaker 2: the creator show the Jellies, and from there, whenever he
- 43:15Speaker 2: has stuff, he'd be like, Hey, you want to sit
- 43:18Speaker 2: in on this writer's room. Would you come help us
- 43:20Speaker 2: with this? You want to do a voice here? And
- 43:22Speaker 2: so when he said do the voice, because I've been
- 43:24Speaker 2: wanting to do voice over stuff.
- 43:26Speaker 1: And really acting too right?
- 43:28Speaker 2: Yes, yes, like and then you have to make the
- 43:31Speaker 2: right to see and then you just try stuff in
- 43:33Speaker 2: there and it's like all right. But he was a
- 43:35Speaker 2: great like you know, director and helped me.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and you went into the studio and did all that.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I did it already the audition. Let me see
- 43:45Speaker 2: did our audition? Or I think he just might have
- 43:48Speaker 2: asked me if I wanted.
- 43:51Speaker 1: How much of this industry would you say? Is a
- 43:53Speaker 1: relationship based industry?
- 43:54Speaker 2: A lot of it? Yeah, a lot of it. Most
- 43:57Speaker 2: of it is. And it's you know, when you get
- 44:00Speaker 2: the shot execute do what you're there to do, you know,
- 44:05Speaker 2: and whatever got you in that room, yeah, that's probably
- 44:09Speaker 2: what's gonna keep you in the room. Yeah you know.
- 44:12Speaker 2: So yeah, but it's all about different relationships. And I'm
- 44:17Speaker 2: firm and I think some of the relationships I have
- 44:20Speaker 2: whereas you just want the chance to be able to
- 44:23Speaker 2: put something in somebody's hand, because that's really what the
- 44:26Speaker 2: difference is. Like, it's not about you got a relationship
- 44:29Speaker 2: with this person and you waiting for them to have
- 44:32Speaker 2: some stuff. It's cool when they do and they call
- 44:34Speaker 2: you and they got something for you, that's cool too.
- 44:36Speaker 2: But the real relationship is, hey, man, I know you
- 44:39Speaker 2: got a production company, tell me what you think about this?
- 44:43Speaker 2: What's something we could you know? And so like, And
- 44:45Speaker 2: I've had those opportunities between you know, Tyler Perry, I've
- 44:48Speaker 2: got to work with Will Smith, I got to work
- 44:50Speaker 2: on the last two Bad Boys movies, like Punching Up
- 44:53Speaker 2: stuff and this is all stuff I'm a fan of.
- 44:56Speaker 1: So yeah, man, And when you get those opportunities, who's
- 44:59Speaker 1: the first person you calling those moments?
- 45:01Speaker 2: Probably my mom? I love that for her, Yeah, probably
- 45:05Speaker 2: my mom. I gotta let her know and she Hey, mom,
- 45:08Speaker 2: guess what.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, don't tell nobody.
- 45:12Speaker 2: Right right that that was last time extended. I didn't
- 45:15Speaker 2: tell nobody. I wasn't supposed to tell nobody. If you
- 45:17Speaker 2: asked me if I want, I just said.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Huh, and people let me be your friend, because I'd
- 45:21Speaker 1: be like, yo, yo, come on, man.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Come huh. That's all I would say, is huh. I
- 45:28Speaker 2: would just so people knew that so annoyed.
- 45:31Speaker 1: But I'll tell you right now, you can't keep no
- 45:33Speaker 1: secaret around me because I'm gonna sell. I'm gonna use
- 45:35Speaker 1: every manipulative tactic to get you.
- 45:38Speaker 2: I wasn't giving up that money. I wasn't giving up
- 45:41Speaker 2: that money because one thing I always kept in mind.
- 45:43Speaker 2: We shot the ending they hit you with the confetti,
- 45:47Speaker 2: and then they shot another alternate ending with somebody else.
- 45:52Speaker 2: Won you understand what I'm saying, damn? So they shot
- 45:57Speaker 2: another way because it was it was based off of
- 46:00Speaker 2: it was based off of the audience, the judges and
- 46:04Speaker 2: a fan vote too, I think, or something like that.
- 46:07Speaker 2: So they shot another one for the other and it's
- 46:10Speaker 2: like okay. So in my mind I was like, if
- 46:14Speaker 2: I fuck up anywhere along here or do some shit,
- 46:17Speaker 2: they said in that long ass, dumb ass contract that
- 46:20Speaker 2: I know I didn't read the whole thing. Then they
- 46:22Speaker 2: could take so I wasn't taking no chance. You know
- 46:24Speaker 2: what I'm saying. I ain't want I didn't want to.
- 46:26Speaker 1: I can respect that, especially with money on the line.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Man. And then you know the money came, they paid.
- 46:33Speaker 2: I think they had.
- 46:34Speaker 1: How well did you spend it?
- 46:36Speaker 2: I made it last, I stretched it out. I didn't
- 46:39Speaker 2: go crazy. I didn't go too crazy. I did buy
- 46:42Speaker 2: some I bought an Asda Martin. We sold it though, but.
- 46:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I got experience it.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, no, the money it took a minute
- 46:54Speaker 2: to come. And then it was a tour right after,
- 46:56Speaker 2: like they paid, Like I think they had ninety days
- 46:58Speaker 2: to pay. I think they paid on the ninety of
- 47:01Speaker 2: the day or something.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Yeah, like that's every company. You ever seen the n
- 47:06Speaker 1: w A movie where they are over time? No, have
- 47:10Speaker 1: you ever seen the n w A movie? And ice
- 47:12Speaker 1: Cube takes a baseball? Yeah, that's how I feel about
- 47:16Speaker 1: ninety percent of my clients. I'm like, y'all must want
- 47:18Speaker 1: me to come in here with.
- 47:18Speaker 2: A baseball bat.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Yeah, And I'm this close and I'm always torn between
- 47:22Speaker 1: burning that Bridge.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Well, you know the new that's pouscheiste. Now what's that
- 47:28Speaker 2: you ain't You ain't heard about push Gucci is Yeah,
- 47:32Speaker 2: Pushisty did something similar to get out of his deal.
- 47:35Speaker 2: But it involved guns. Oh and Gucci man, and that's
- 47:40Speaker 2: the crazy that's yeah, hilarious. Yeah, but no, I feel
- 47:44Speaker 2: you got it.
- 47:44Speaker 1: Sometimes you want to like yo, y'all take it too
- 47:47Speaker 1: long to pay if we live in California.
- 47:52Speaker 2: And then you know, sometimes I don't know if you're
- 47:56Speaker 2: getting paid through, Like sometimes I'm getting paid through a
- 47:57Speaker 2: corporation that I know has money.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh, all the companies that the biggest. So
- 48:04Speaker 1: this is what my role of thumb in business. I
- 48:06Speaker 1: don't discriminate, but I like to keep a healthy balance
- 48:09Speaker 1: of small business and big business because the small business
- 48:13Speaker 1: can get you through the time, while the big business
- 48:15Speaker 1: is taking forever long to use you as a bank. Yes,
- 48:19Speaker 1: because that's what they're doing. They're saying, how many times
- 48:21Speaker 1: can I flip this money.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Before I pay you? Yep?
- 48:24Speaker 1: And a small company, you be looking at them checks
- 48:27Speaker 1: like damn, that's a little bit of money, But don't
- 48:29Speaker 1: you ever think about turning it down? Because that's that
- 48:32Speaker 1: money that's gonna bridge you through every time. And I
- 48:35Speaker 1: tell everybody that in business, like, don't you be hating
- 48:37Speaker 1: on them small companies, because I promise you that little
- 48:39Speaker 1: little baby check that show up on the first of
- 48:41Speaker 1: every month, and that.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Big company they'll find ways. Like I remember, I had
- 48:44Speaker 2: some trouble just with with Sony wanting to pay me,
- 48:49Speaker 2: you know, like I had did some stuff and it
- 48:51Speaker 2: was an unorthodox way how I got there to doing it,
- 48:54Speaker 2: But what they offered me, I was like, man, what
- 48:57Speaker 2: the hell are they talking about? You know what I'm saying,
- 49:00Speaker 2: Like all these goddamn PlayStations out and bought. Who does
- 49:04Speaker 2: Sony think they are? You know what I'm saying, You're
- 49:06Speaker 2: not gonna pay me like this, Like I've been here
- 49:09Speaker 2: thirty days. You're not gonna pay me this measily? Like
- 49:12Speaker 2: what we looking at look like about one hundred dollars
- 49:14Speaker 2: a day, no serve like yeah, So yeah, it was,
- 49:18Speaker 2: but the second time around it was it was more right.
- 49:21Speaker 2: But I had to fight for it that first time,
- 49:23Speaker 2: and I had to, you know, I was like, hold on,
- 49:25Speaker 2: I'm working for a big name person that pays me
- 49:30Speaker 2: more than what you talking about paying me. Yeah, And
- 49:34Speaker 2: I know this one individual don't have more money. Only
- 49:40Speaker 2: come on now.
