- 0:43SPEAKER_01: Hey, Section 4 football fans, it's that time of year again.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Buckle your chin strap, put your mouthpiece in, and double knot your cleats.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: It's week one of the 2022 Section 4 football season.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Today, our Section 4 football analyst is Roger Neo.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: You know him as the sports voice of the Southern tier.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Take it away, Roger.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: All right, Tim.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Exciting time, absolutely.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I'm not quite sure what's more exciting than the start of football season at the high school level.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Should be a tremendous official week one.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Some teams played in week zero, they've labeled it this year, non-conference action.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: But now come some games with real meaning.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: We'll see what some of these teams have.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: We're going to highlight several of what we think are going to be key matchups to start week number one, one of which involves one of the defending championship teams.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Uh, the Forks will be in action.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: They match up against Windsor.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Uh Shenango Forks, defending state champs, and they'll match up at Windsor in a key battle.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: A lot of changes for the Forks.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Quarterback certainly will be a key for them.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And we're looking forward to what should be a tremendous battle in the opening night of the season.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Another big matchup will have Tyoga in action.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: This is really like a championship game.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Tyoga defending state champs will be matching up at Newark Valley.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Two of the top smaller schools in the entire state, not just Section 4.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So that's going to be a key one.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And then a lot of eyes will be focused Saturday afternoon on UE's road game at Maine and Well.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Now, it doesn't matter what the classifications are, because when these two teams match up, it's a backyard battle.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: We know that.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And it should be an outstanding way.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: What a way to kick off the first weekend of action in Section 4.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: UE coming off a Section 4 Class A championship.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: And of course, Maine Enwell returning as a Class B state title holder for Maine Enwell.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Certainly a key is going to be the play of someone to replace the offensive fireworks and defensively too, but certainly offensively, Michael Mancini.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: He did everything, whether it was returning kicks, running, passing, you name it, he did it, and he did it superbly.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: He's gone.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Now the Spartans will have to find a combined offense to help replace that.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: On the other side of the ball, you ease uh Lang, Nick Lang, a tremendous three-sport athlete, a great runner.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: He's got good size, 6'2, 175.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And the Tigers come off a Class A Section 4 championship from last year.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: So again, throw out the classifications, throw out anything.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: This is going to be another good battle between two of the top area teams, and it should be a big showdown scheduled for the afternoon.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Saturday coming up of week one of play.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: We again advise folks to carefully check the schedules of all their teams this year with a shortage of officials.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: There could be some late-minute changes as far as whether it's Friday or Saturday.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Will it be a day game, Saturday, or a night game?
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Keep up to date with your teams, but no matter what the case, there should be some outstanding battles in the first official week of Section 4 high school football.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Tim?
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Hey, Roger, thank you.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Just a little bit to add to what you had covered there, Roger.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Out west, Elmira's game Friday night against Ithaca was supposed to be at Elmira, and that was supposed to be the opening for their new stadium.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: But that game has moved to Ithaca.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: It's still 7 p.m.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: start time.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Elmira City School District has a new stadium, and so does Ithaca.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: And Elmira's new stadium opening is postponed now until September 23rd when they host Union Endicott during the homecoming weekend.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Another significant contest out west will be Newburgh visiting Corning.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: That's moved to Friday.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: That was originally scheduled for Saturday.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Newburgh is a defending Section 9 AA champ, and Corning is a two-time defending Section 4 AA champ.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: Corning has a significant challenge, though.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: They lost 18 starters from last season, but they tend to have a really good program out there with Coach Johnston, and they just reload and keep on going.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Another interesting game in Telga County will be Waverly and Aweego.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: That's really got the potential to be a good game.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Although Aweego is going to have their hands full, stopping the high-powered Waverly offense led by Joey Tomaso, who has been around forever, and Joey's only a junior this year, so he's got another season after this.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: In Broome County, Vestal, they could surprise some uh teams this year.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: They had only five seniors on their squad last season.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: This season they have 25, and they have the potential to be really good.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: So I'd be interested to see how they compete against the likes of UE, especially when they get to have that particular game.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Unendicot, on the other hand, has also brought back a lot of seniors this year.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: They have 20 seniors coupled with their Section 4 championship last year.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: So they're going to have a really tough squad this year as well.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Out east, we've got a few good games out there.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: We've got Dryden at Sydney.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Bainbridge Guildford is at Lansing, and Delhi is at Oneana.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: And the word is out of the eastern portion of Section 4, Class D, watch out for Delhi.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: They're led by Coach Newman.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: And they could possibly be on a collision course later in the season where they play the Tioga Tigers.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: The Norwich Purple Tornado are really coming out of the shoot really strong.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Coach Christie's got them hitting on all cylinders.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: In their week one, I'm sorry, their week zero contest, they won that game 69-0 with a win over Sherbert and Irvill.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: This is not eight-player classification or an arena league game.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: This is a 69-0 win.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: So it's very tough to score 69 points, uh, no matter what kind of a contest you're playing.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: In the eight-player classification, there's some strong teams returning.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: There's Green, Groton, and Trumansburg.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: They're all coming back with very strong squads for the 2021 season.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: That particular classification is down to nine teams from 12 or 13 last season.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: And a significant loss to that classification is Almire Notre Dame will not be fielding a football team this season.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: So that wraps things up, and thanks again, Roger.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: Appreciate it.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Sounds good.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Thank you very much, and best of luck for all the high schools.
