- 0:07The Los Angeles Dodgers face the Baltimore Orioles at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore for Game 3 of the 1966 World Series on October 8th.
- 0:16The Orioles lead the best of seven series, two games to none, and this is the NBC National Broadcast of Game 3 featuring announcers Bob Prince and Vince Scully.
- 0:26From Darktown, Walter Olson, now the leadoff man, and Captain Maury Wills, who is looking for his first kid in the series,
- 0:33followed by the first baseman and the gunner's foot-shitter Wes Barker, who is due for sixth in the series.
- 0:40In the third spot, the man who gets a roar from Baltimore, Willie Davis, and the man, I believe, to whom most people's hearts point out,
- 0:49after the rather unfortunate thing as far as he was concerned, him Dodgers Savior.
- 0:54In the cleanup spot for the Dodgers, Ron Fairley, who is 0-4-4.
- 1:00Batting fifth, another member of his switch-hitting in the field, Jimmy LaFever.
- 1:05You remember last year LaFever hurt his heel in the third game of the series and was sidelined for the remainder of the series,
- 1:12and here he was now in the third game, so he's made it that far this year.
- 1:16The left fielder, Lou Johnson, who is one hit and seven fifths. He's the spark plug in the chatter man in the starting lineup.
- 1:24The catcher is at the opposite poles of Lou Johnson. He is called Gabby because he is the quiet man, Johnny Roseborough.
- 1:34Batting eighth, and third, Jim Gilliam, after playing the first two games, will stay on the bench,
- 1:41and Kennedy now will have a chance to play. And warming up directly in front of us, left-hander Claude Osteen.
- 1:48The Dodgers looked to Osteen last year after they had lost two in a row in Minnesota, and he won.
- 1:54And they look to him again here in Baltimore.
- 1:57And the remainder of the Dodgers squad plus the coaches now lining up on the first-place foul line
- 2:03as they come out in their traveling road gray and royal blue.
- 2:07Now the American League champion, Baltimore Orioles.
- 2:16Here headed by the great Yankee, and now the pride of Baltimore, manager Hank Fowler.
- 2:26Now the Oriole lineup. The starting lineup will form from third base towards home plate.
- 2:32With the leadoff man in short top, Lewis Aparicio, getting a standing ovation.
- 2:39Aparicio 2 for 10 in the series.
- 2:43The left fielder, Kirk Fleffery, born in Brooklyn, and he has played the Dodgers in Los Angeles,
- 2:50and now hitting second in the lineup.
- 2:54The right fielder, the great Frank Robinson.
- 2:57Robbie 3 for 8 in the series, including a home run.
- 3:06The third baseman, Brooks Robinson, 2 for 9, including a home run.
- 3:14The huge first baseman, the left-hand hitting Johnny Boo Powell, 3 for 8 in the series.
- 3:22A little bit of a surprise because he is not considered the big hitter,
- 3:29but he has more hits in the series than anybody else.
- 3:32The scrappy second baseman, Dave Johnson, he has 4 for 8.
- 3:38The center fielder, who goes against left-handers and finishes up defensively against right-handers,
- 3:43Paul Blair, 0 for 3, hitting 7.
- 3:46The kid from La Fuente, California, not too far from Los Angeles, Andy Etchiband,
- 3:53who has done a tremendous job filling in for the injured Dick Brown.
- 3:57And warming up just to our left is Charlie Lau, right-hander, 10-game winner in the American League, Wally Funkers.
- 4:08And now the remainder of the Baltimore Orioles squad,
- 4:12plus their coaches will pour out of the dugout onto their third base foul line,
- 4:16a magnificent fixture it makes here in Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 4:22We'll be back with more pregame color from Memorial Stadium on the third game of the 1966 World Series
- 4:28after a word from someone in the bullpen.
- 4:31We're here in the left field bullpen, talking to that ace by our ballers, Chuck and Doug Brown.
- 4:37Chuck, it says here that you have an ERA of.383.
- 4:40That's your earned run average, right?
- 4:42Wrong. Actually, ERA stands for extremely rapid automobile.
- 4:46You see, on a hot August afternoon when you walk in the winning run of a top of the night,
- 4:50you just don't like to hang around and talk to the fans.
- 4:53So that's why I bought a 67 Dodge Polaroid 500 with a 383 cubic inch V8 in that new Polaroid control panel.
- 5:01I can work the toggle switches with my glove on, and Polaroid bucket seats are great,
- 5:06especially for a bench former like myself, and it's big.
- 5:09Is it big?
- 5:10And Chuck, I understand that you can also lay down a sacrifice when called upon.
- 5:14Actually, it's no sacrifice to buy a Dodge Polaroid 500.
- 5:18Most of the things I want are standard equipment, and the price was less than I had been paying.
- 5:22Chuck, would you mind if we stayed around to watch you warm up?
- 5:26Not at all, lady. In fact, I was just about to go right now.
- 5:56When the night is new,
- 6:00When the road is bright,
- 6:03When the land is full of flowers,
- 6:06When the fields are clear,
- 6:09When the trees are bright,
- 6:13And I'm a leader,
- 6:18When the night is new,
- 6:23When the road is bright,
- 6:28When the land is full of flowers,
- 6:34When the land is full of flowers.
- 6:42Here in the magnificent city of Baltimore,
- 6:51where Francis Scott G. during the shelling of Baltimore,
- 6:55penned those immortal words, our national anthem,
- 6:58we are about set for game three.
- 7:01Before we get it underway, we pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 7:05This is J.C.R.A. J.C.R.A. F.M., your World Serious Station for the Valley in Sacramento.
- 7:19The umpires are now taking their position, and we'll very briefly give you some of the ground measurements here at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 7:27309 feet down both lines, ground measurement, 410 straight out.
- 7:32It's 360 in right center and left center. There are bleachers, which we'll fill you in about and tell you more about it.
- 7:39There will be some delay perhaps on balls hit down the right field line from our broadcasting position.
- 7:45Due to the ground rules and the book rules that are involved, we'll get into it later,
- 7:49but we'll have to naturally defend the lot on the umpire down there on the right field line
- 7:54as to just what is going on with the baseball once it gets out of our sight.
- 7:59It's a 14-foot concrete wall for the target to get up over there in the home run,
- 8:04and a 7-foot wire fence, which is on the inside of the circumference of Memorial Stadium.
- 8:09So the umpires are set, and they're having now the traditional throwing out of the first ball,
- 8:14and it will be by Dick Brown, who is recuperating from surgery, the catcher, for the Baltimore Orioles,
- 8:22and this will be taking place in just a moment.
- 8:25Oriole catcher Dick Brown will fill out the first ball.
- 8:33Very heartwarming. Very, very heartwarming indeed.
- 8:40And now, ladies and gentlemen, set to carry along and bring you all the pulling action of this,
- 8:45The third game between the Baltimore Orioles as they take the field and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 8:50The veteran voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Ben Shelley.
- 8:55Thank you, Bob, and hi, everybody, and a very pleasant good day to you wherever you may be,
- 8:59and to all the folks back home in Southern California, good morning.
- 9:02Wally Bunkers, slowly walking out to the mound, getting ready to warm up to Andy Etchibarron,
- 9:08who will set the bird for you defensively.
- 9:10Johnny Powell at first, Dave Johnson at second, Luis Aparicio at short,
- 9:15and the third baseman, Brooks Robinson.
- 9:17In the off the field, Kirk Leffery, tuning up in left.
- 9:21In center, Paul Blair, and in right, Frank Robinson.
- 9:26And for the Dodgers, it will be Maury Wills, Wes Parker, and Willie Dixon.
- 9:31It has come up a beauty in Baltimore, we're delighted to say, a bright, sunshiny day, a slight haze,
- 9:37and shadows, and the crowd, very comfortable, jam-packed as they wait for Wally Bunker to make his first pitch.
- 9:44Bunker, during the course of the year 110, had lost six.
- 9:48Oddly enough, he was not particularly effective at home.
- 9:51He won three and lost three.
- 9:53On the road, he was seven and three.
- 9:57A reminder, year one United Funders Community Chest supports many health and welfare services,
- 10:01helping children, young people, families, the elderly, and the sick.
- 10:04And there are times when people need help, and they get it from the agencies supported by your United campaign.
- 10:10Well, these days there are more people with more problems.
- 10:12So when the United Funders Community Chest Five opens in your town, give the United way.
- 10:21Maury Wills, swinging his favorite stick off to the left as he waits to call for play ball,
- 10:26and now he checks in to start it off against Wally Bunker.
- 10:30Danny Ozark coaching his first for the Dodgers.
- 10:33Preston Gomez over his third.
- 10:35The bullfins are back of the low-wire fence.
- 10:38Baltimore in left center, and the visiting club, the Dodgers in right center.
- 10:43And now Wally Bunker ready to make the first pitch of the third game of the 1966 World Series.
- 10:48Right hand is fastball, a strike, and we're underway.
- 10:55309 feet down each line, considerably smaller than the Dodgers are accustomed to,
- 11:00but it falls away rapidly to 360, 380, 390, and 410, the symmetrical part.
- 11:08Wills looking for his first hit in the series.
- 11:11He is 0 for 7.
- 11:13Robinson up inside the bag at third, howl about even at first.
- 11:16Back comes Bunker's fastball for a strike. 0 and 2.
- 11:23Wally Bunker does not throw as hard as he did a couple of years ago, but it's still hard enough.
- 11:28He hurt his arm originally while having a great year.
- 11:32Last spring it bothered him, and he has never really gotten over it back to that big year.
- 11:37The strike two pitch on the way.
- 11:39Fastball flung on this strike three.
- 11:46The Wally Wills goes down swinging, starting the matter, and here is Wes Parker.
- 11:51Parker, the switch hitting first baseman batting left-handed, is 2 for 6 in the series.
- 12:05Bunker is not considered a particularly good fielder, and the Dodgers, somewhere along the line,
- 12:11if they have an opportunity, will no doubt try and test him with a butt or two.
- 12:14Parker swings and fouls it away off to the left upstairs. 0 and 1 to count.
- 12:20Bob was telling you before about the wooden bleachers in right center and left center,
- 12:25and we have been told that at no time were there people in there during the regular season,
- 12:30but of course it's the capacity crowd here today.
- 12:34Bunker into his windup, and the strike one pitch to Parker.
- 12:37In at the hands on the corner, strike two. Good sinker.
- 12:43The first ball that Bunker delivered for a strike has been sent to Cooperstown Hall of Fame at the museum.
- 12:51So Wally working with a new one.
- 12:54Here's the strike two pitch to Wes Parker. Bunker delivers, breaking ball, got him looking.
- 13:06So after five fastballs, Wally Bunker came back with a good breaking ball to strike out Parker.
- 13:12Two out in the first inning, and the batter is Wally Bunker.
- 13:15Now here is Willie Davis.
- 13:19Willie Davis in the series is one for eight.
- 13:24Everybody watching Bunker, he started off with strikeouts to Wills and Parker.
- 13:28Right-handed delivers, breaking ball, hit in the air and slicing down the left field line.
- 13:32Bleffery a long way to come, and he makes the catch.
- 13:45A fine running catch by left fielder, Kurt Bleffery, on a slicing fly ball in the corner.
- 13:50And the score at the end of half an inning, the Dodgers nothing, and Baltimore coming up.
- 13:59I've just run out.
- 14:02You've just run out?
- 14:03I'm out of cigarettes.
- 14:05Well, try one of mine.
- 14:07Try one of yours?
- 14:09Sure, try one of mine. Have a say-lo.
- 14:13Salem is the best of cigarettes. I'll pre-fetch it your six for you.
- 14:20Salem is the best of cigarettes. All of America's saying too.
- 14:27When you buy a best of cigarette, don't take anything off of that.
- 14:34Salem is the best of cigarettes. The one brand that I sell is Alvarez.
- 14:43Try one of mine.
- 14:45Salem is the best of cigarettes. All of America's saying too.
- 14:57A very fine running catch by a tremendous drive made by Kurt Bleffery to close out the Dodgers top of the first.
- 15:03And Baltimore now will be set to go in what so far across as a scoreless game.
- 15:08Two strikeouts of the three-hour three-quarters now puts the Dodgers strikeout total to an alarming number 20,
- 15:15which is something, of course, that you might say is bad Dodger hitting,
- 15:19but then on the other side you might very well say extremely well scouted.
- 15:25The Dodger ball club being picked to by perhaps the number-rated Baltimore Pitching staff thus far.
- 15:31Lewis Aparicio, lead it off, will be followed by Kurt Bleffery and then Frank Robinson and Claude Osteen,
- 15:39who had the pressure on his shoulders last year but was pitching at home to salvage a big win,
- 15:44now has even more pressure as he was asked to win on the road.
- 15:48Aparicio takes the site, going once. Osteen is not an overpoweringly fast pitcher.
- 15:54He does not throw quite as hard this year as last, but he has a good fastball, a breaking ball, and a slider.
- 16:00And, of course, he'll try and stay right around the plate.
- 16:03He's a good fielder, left-hander, back with a fastball high and away, one and one.
- 16:08The Dodgers defensively with Claude Osteen and Johnny Roseborough,
- 16:11The infield of Wes Parker and Jimmy LaFever, Maury Wilson, John Kennedy,
- 16:15The outfield of Lou Johnson, Willie Davis, and Ron Fairley.
- 16:19So the Dodgers down two, trying to quiet the birds here in the bottom of the first.
- 16:24Osteen back to the plate one-one, fastball in there, strike two, one and two.
- 16:29Chris Palakoutis of the National League, the playdump fire, with John Rice at first of the American League,
- 16:35Mel Steiner at second of the National League, Hal Drummond at third of the American League,
- 16:41with Bill Joukowsky on the left-field line, National League,
- 16:44Nester Shylock on the right-field line, American League.
- 16:47One-two pitch, fastball, a bouncer to the right of LaFever, Jimmy on the run, up with it, and throws him out.
- 16:55So Aparicio rolls to second baseman LaFever, one out. Here is Kurt Bleffery,
- 16:59who made a fine running catch of that high-slicing fly ball in the left-field corner.
- 17:12Bleffery won for eight in the series, and so the two outstanding defensive plays so far in the series belong to Baltimore.
- 17:20The great diving one-hand catch by Russ Snyder in center, and the running catch by Bleffery today.
- 17:25Breaking ball is down and away, ball one, one and oh. On deck, Frank Robinson.
- 17:32The infield playing Bleffery to pull, he likes to drag against left-handers, so he might try to bunt on Parker.
- 17:38The first two, Kurt, breaking ball is missed, Osteen is behind two and oh.
- 17:43Infield swung way around the first, though Kennedy is almost in the hole at short,
- 17:48and the outfield around the right with Willie Davis slightly off the mark in right center.
- 17:52Lou Johnson gives Bleffery all of left field, the same way Kurt was playing Willie Davis.
- 17:58The 2-0 pitch on the way, swung on and missed, two and one.
- 18:04No score, bottom of the first inning, one away, bases empty.
- 18:08Dodges run out of order, Wills and Parker striking out, Willie Davis flying to Bleffery when Kurt made the fine catch.
- 18:15Now the 2-1 pitch on the way, fastball high, ball three.
- 18:20When Osteen gets in trouble, it is when he tries to aim the ball.
- 18:24You've seen a bowler when he delivers the ball down the lane, how he tries to give it body English.
- 18:29Well, when Osteen is in trouble, that's what he does, and then he becomes ineffective.
- 18:32The Dodgers have told him to just go out and throw as hard as he can for as long as he can.
- 18:373-1 pitch in there, strike two.
- 18:45Both are all thin-seated in the near corner of the Dodger dugout so that we can see his head peering out of the dugout.
- 18:51He's been to the wars enough times.
- 18:55Osteen ready in the 3-2 pitch to Bleffery, ground ball to Parker, west upward it goes to the bag himself.
- 19:01So two up and two away, and the batter will be Frank Robinson.
- 19:16Probably who chewed up the American League, winning the Triple Crown for the first time in 10 years with Mantle did it.
- 19:22And Robinson started off the World Series in fine style, hitting a towering home run his first trip to the plated Dodger Stadium.
- 19:29Frank is 3-4-8, strong right-hand-hitting right fielder.
- 19:33Osteen into his window, back to the plate, and gets it on the inside corner, and that's the best fastball he's thrown so far.
- 19:39It had a tail on it. It ran in on the hands. 0-1.
- 19:44In the clean-up spot, Brooks Robinson, the third baseman.
- 19:49In field the other way now on Robinson, there's one way around the third, fastball in the dirt.
- 19:541-1 to counter Frank.
- 19:58Osteen Hunter, who at one time way back when was in the Dodger organization and was sold to the St. Louis Browns, who in turn, in a way, became the Baltimore Orioles.
- 20:07Billy Hunter coaching at third.
- 20:09Gene Woodman, Hank Bauer's teammate with the Yankees, coaching at third.
- 20:13Sherman Lawler, Harry Burkeane filling out Bauer's coaching staff.
- 20:20Osteen ready in the 1-1 pitch, fastball on the outside corner.
- 20:24Sure a textbook bit of pitching there. Fastball inside for a strike, fastball outside for a strike. 1-2.
- 20:32First inning, no score, two outbases empty.
- 20:38Will slings Robinson deep and in the hole.
- 20:41Osteen back to the plate inside and high, this time 2-2.
- 20:46Robbie crowds the plate, more so than any other hitter in the National League, with the exception perhaps of Dodger Lou Johnson.
- 20:59Osteen back in the rubber.
- 21:01Johnny Roseborough wig-wagging signs out to him, 2-2 the count.
- 21:07Fraud, both feet on the rubber, looks in to get his sign as Roseborough goes on his right knee, and the 2-2 pitch is low. 4-0 plays.
- 21:16So Osteen is pitching carefully. He went all the way to Bluffery, if you remember, 3-2, and he has come right back 3-2 to Frank Robinson.
- 21:30Robbie's bumping the wood back and forth, Osteen staring at his feet, thinking over his pitches.
- 21:36Now the left hand is ready, and the 3-2 pitch on the way. Fast forward, got him swinging, and his foul tipped out of Roseborough's neck.
- 21:42So John unable to hold on to it, and Robbie is still there 3-2.
- 21:48Good pitch, and Robinson was certainly not cheated on the swings. 3-2.
- 21:59Osteen again, head down, thinking, now looks in to Roseborough.
- 22:03But 3-2 pitch on the way. Breaking Boreau got him swinging this time, and down he goes.
- 22:09So the birds are out in order, 1-2-3, and the score at the end of the first inning, Dodgers nothing, Baltimore nothing.
- 22:16Say, Flint, who was pitching when Babe Ruth hit that famous home run in the 1932 World Series?
- 22:21You mean you can't quite remember? Well, read all about it on Fall Stamp World Series Six-Packs.
- 22:26At your dealer now, on each pack, the highlight of World Series history. In each pack, the choices products of the Brewer's Art.
- 22:34I never feared you had money while you're high, and though you thought you couldn't hide, I never feared the false gas. I never feared the false gas.
- 22:59Sure, swing for a double, friends. Pick up all staff, two packs at a time. You'll refresh more than your memory with World Series Six-Packs of all staff beer.
- 23:18Second inning, no score in the ballgame, Wally Bunker and Claude Osteen.
- 23:22The Dodgers now, coming up, will have Ron Fairley, Jimmy LaFever, and Lou Johnson.
- 23:28Fairley started one of the two games, was not in there in the opener, his 0-4-4.
- 23:37Fairley basically a pro hitter, and that's the book on him. The infield is flung way around the first with Johnny Powell guarding the foul line, and the outfield deep and around the right.
- 23:48So Fairley at the plate, and Wally Bunker, who set the Dodgers down in fine style, striking out two of three, now ready to set sail in inning number two.
- 24:01Second inning, no score, with Fairley opening it up.
- 24:05Aparicio way off to his left to fill up the middle, Powell going steady with the right field foul line, and the pitch to Fairley gets low, 4-1, 1-0.
- 24:14Bunker, primarily a low ball pitcher, he's a fine keeper down on the Dodgers. Boy, he made some dandies to strike out Wills and Parker.
- 24:23The 1-0 pitch, Ron Fairley, fast ball low, 4-2, 2-0.
- 24:29Baltimore really relying on the fast ball ever since Mo Drabowski gave a little lesson in how to throw it at Dodger Stadium.
- 24:40Bunker into his windup, Wally's 2-0 pitch on the way, fast ball, line guard knocks his glove off. Bunker chasing, and picks it up with no play.
- 24:48So Fairley takes the glove off Bunker's hands with a solid single.
- 24:57So the first hit in the ballgame is literally off Bunker, off his glove, and knocked it off, and that'll bring up Jimmy Lepeber.
- 25:13Jimmy Lepeber, the first-hitting second baseman, is one for six in the series. It was a home run deep to left field while batting right-handed in the first game.
- 25:23Jimmy hit 24 during the course of the season and was the Dodgers' leader in home runs and in RBI.
- 25:29Bunker said, looks at Fairley, the pitch to Lepeber outside, ball one. Fairley is not a base-stealing threat, but if Wills, Parker, Willy Davis, Johnsons get on base, they will definitely try to run against Bunker unless the law of the floor prohibits it.
- 25:46Of all of the birds, Bunker comes into this one with the reputation of not being able to hold men on. The pitch to Lepeber, slicing fly ball to left field, referee hustling in and over near the line, he's there now and makes the catch.
- 26:03One away, and the batter, Lou Johnson.
- 26:12Lou is one for seven in the series, right-hand-hitting left and right fielder. He plays right field against left-handers when Tommy Davis plays, left field against right-handers when Fairley plays right.
- 26:27The Lou at the plate was one out. The pitch to Johnson, way out in front of an off-speed pitch, 0-1.
- 26:34Johnson, a first ball-hitter, is an extremely anxious hitter, and the birds got the book on him, so the first pitch they changed out. 0-1.
- 26:43Johnny Powell holding the bag on Fairley. No score, second inning, one out. Bunker back to the plate, change high again, 1-1.
- 26:54Johnson has a look to Dodgers in this combination of Fairley out first. Might very well be going to the hit-and-run play. Lou backs out to check now with Preston Gomez.
- 27:041-1, the count to Lou Johnson.
- 27:13Bunker to a stretch, set at the belt, checks and decides maybe they will go to the hit-and-run, so he'll drive Fairley back. 1-1, the count.
- 27:23Andy Etchibarron behind the plate, wig-wagging signs out the bunker.
- 27:27Ruth Robinson, uppercut near the bag, is third. Bunker ready, checking, and Fairley does not go, and the fast ball, a broken bat, and a ground-bolt, Aparicio to Johnson to Powell, double play.
- 27:46So the double play, 6-4-3, Aparicio to Johnson to Powell, no runs to hit, nobody left. And so at the middle of the second inning, the score of the Dodgers, nothing, Baltimore, nothing.
- 27:57With some hands you'll get nowhere, so you head's up handsome. Girls don't care for Patrick and so you head's up handsome. Two for a bottle, one is scuttled, makes you head's up handsome.
- 28:13Two for a bottle, to let heads up grooms like water, only betters, won't dry up, won't catch you yet. So men, take the strength, you head's up.
- 28:25Meanwhile, yelling a head off for the home team is one great way to express yourselves. Writing with a paper-made flair is another.
- 28:32New flair, the forest point pen that puts the real you on paper. Millions of tiny pores flow words smoothly. Now writing is free and easy and fun. Flair writes big and bold, writes neat and fine.
- 28:45You know, you can get a flair pen free with any pen from the paper-made Profile 3-0, or buy a flair for just 49 cents. Either way, it's a good deal.
- 29:06Bottom of the second inning, no score in the ballgame, and a great pitch by Wiley Bunker to end the second inning. And now Baltimore coming up with Brooks Robinson, Johnny Powell, and Dave Johnson.
- 29:19Boy, Bunker really jammed Lou Johnson, hitting him off the fist with that, and that quick Baltimore infield turning it into a double play.
- 29:27Here is Brooks Robinson, right hand hitting third baseman leading off. Osteen's pitch is hitting the air to shallow left center. Wiley Davis is there just waiting, but Johnson coming over, and one hand's in.
- 29:39Lou just took it away from Wiley, scurrying it off the bill of his cap. And Wiley Davis and Lou Johnson have a little chat that time.
- 29:51And that shakes up the crowd on a five-ball to left center. Lou Johnson almost took cap and ball away from Wiley Davis as he speared the ball right at the bill of Wiley's cap.
- 30:04That shakes him up, one away. Boy, he looked like a room service waiter in a hurry, carrying that trade. Here's Johnny Powell.
- 30:15John three for eight takes a big rip and doesn't get it on one. We're in the bottom of the second inning. That's the first out. No score.
- 30:26On deck, second baseman Dave Johnson. Osteen ready, and the strike one fits, breaking ball outside, one and one.
- 30:35Left-handers like to keep the ball down and away from Johnny Powell because he has a tendency to give that replace, not bail out, but that right shoulder will pull out of there a little bit against left-handers.
- 30:47One-one pitch on the way, breaking ball, first right, one and two.
- 30:57One and two to count. Osteen feet on the rubber, now Claude ready, and the one-two pitch, breaking ball, line drive, they hit it to right side.
- 31:08Barely over to get it. Now makes his turn and holds there as Ron gets it back in.
- 31:18And the batter will be Dave Johnson, the middleman on the Baltimore double play.
- 31:25Dave with four hits. Powell just picked up his fourth in the series. To the right hand, hitting Johnson at the plate.
- 31:34One out, no score in the second. The Dodgers and the Orioles, third game of the series.
- 31:40Osteen from a stretch for the first time today, and the fastball is low, four-one.
- 31:46Parker holding the bag on Powell, who is not a threat to run.
- 31:52The outfield on Johnson straight away. Dave, more so than any other member, oh maybe Aparicio, but outside of Aparicio.
- 32:00He's the man who figures to play hit and run more than anybody else because he makes contact.
- 32:05But basically Baltimore goes to the beginning, the power club. One open, outside with a fastball, ball two.
- 32:23Johnson had a quick look at Billy Hunter to see if they let him swing two and oh.
- 32:27Now Osteen on the rubber. Look over at Johnny Powell in the left hand, the works to plate, low, four-three.
- 32:42Three and oh count to Dave Johnson with Johnny Powell at first base.
- 32:47Moreless in the second. Roseboro blinks his signs out and now Osteen three-oh-fifth on the corner for a slice. Three and one.
- 32:58Now we'll see if Baltimore plays a little run and hit.
- 33:04The opposite of hit and run of course because the batter is not obligated to swing at ball four.
- 33:10Three and one to count to Dave Johnson. Osteen says Powell does not go fastball, swung on and missed.
- 33:16We'll see if they play run and hit now on a full count.
- 33:23Osteen just kind of gazing out towards center field, heaves a big sigh.
- 33:30Now for it up on top again. LaFever up two steps. A rather gallows second base now.
- 33:36The runner goes and a pitch it down ball to Wills. He goes to LaFever, back to Parker, double play.
- 33:42Even though big Powell jacked LaFever, the Dodgers got the double play six to four to three.
- 33:47No runs to hit, nobody left and at the end of two the Dodgers nothing, Baltimore nothing.
- 33:52If you're a man with a collection of sports books or if you're a lady who never even bothered to look at the sports pages,
- 33:58I think you'll enjoy the Joe Garagiola World Series score book, now available absolutely free at your Dodge dealer.
- 34:05If you like to keep score during a baseball game, there are score sheets in the books for that purpose.
- 34:10Even if you'd like to keep score but don't know how, there are very simple and I do mean simple instructions.
- 34:16There are some laughs, some tips on things to watch for, and some records,
- 34:20all of which should add to your enjoyment of the 1966 World Series.
- 34:25For millions of Americans the World Series is fun, and the idea of this book is very simply to add to that fun.
- 34:31A strictly your Dodge dealer is a good idea anytime, especially right now for a fall checkup.
- 34:37Here's your copy of the Joe Garagiola Fun and Facts World Series score book.
- 34:41The price is, as I both hope, that it will be something you want to keep even after the series is over.
- 34:46Remember, it's free.
- 34:51Well, as then described for you, this game is getting off some sparks.
- 34:55Some brilliant defensive plays and some rather amazing trickery taking place in left field.
- 35:00When the youngster by the name of Luke Johnson went over and snatched one right out of the way of Willie Davis
- 35:05and made the catch, however, on Brooks Robinson as though almost there was nothing to it.
- 35:10Then the double play ball, which of course is a very key factor normally for the Dodger ball club
- 35:15because down through the season they're excellent at doing that.
- 35:18So we move now to the top of the third. It's a scoreless ball game here then.
- 35:23Johnny Roseburn lead it off, he'd be followed by John Kennedy, and then the pitcher Claude Osteen.
- 35:28Wally Bunker gave up a base hit to Fairleigh, knocked his ball ball up in the second inning, and now Bunker ready to go to work.
- 35:36Roseburn waiting in Wally's first pitch to John, fast ball over for a slice.
- 35:41Roseburn just looks at Palakoutis, doesn't say anything.
- 35:45John basically a low ball hitter.
- 35:47Odeur playing him to full, deep and around towards first base towards the infield and around the right the outfield.
- 35:53Third inning, no score.
- 35:56Bunker into his windup and the strike one pitch.
- 36:00Third inning, no score.
- 36:03Bunker into his windup and the strike one pitch.
- 36:06Fast ball over strike two.
- 36:08So there it is, more and more the fast ball thrown by Baltimore pitchers.
- 36:13It is one big reason why the Dodgers have gone down for 20 strikeouts in two games plus this one.
- 36:19They've been overpowered at the plate.
- 36:24Roseburn with a bad right wrist, he's had a lot of trouble holding onto his bat this year.
- 36:28The breaking ball is thrown on a missed strike three.
- 36:35Third strikeout for Wally Bunker, one away in the third inning, and the batter John Kennedy.
- 36:42Kennedy making his first appearance in the series.
- 36:46Right hand batter.
- 36:49John played a good deal of the season until the end of August and then in September when Dick Schofield joined the ball club.
- 36:56By Kennedy they made very rare appearances.
- 36:59They also played in quite a while, takes the fast ball outside ball one.
- 37:05Kennedy backs out, has a look at Preston Gomez.
- 37:08Fought Osteen a pretty good hitting pitcher out on deck.
- 37:13Bunker comes back to the plate one-oh.
- 37:15Fast ball, he jammed it and he fouled it away off to the right out of play.
- 37:19Bunker a good live fast ball.
- 37:22We told you before that when Lou Johnson hit into the double play, he hit him right on the fists with it and broke the bat, cracked it.
- 37:29And he came right back to Jan Kennedy.
- 37:33One-on-one McHouse.
- 37:36Wally checking, in to his windup, and the right hand is one-one pitch fast ball high.
- 37:40Ball two, two and one.
- 37:45The Baltimore Orioles in the first World Series game ever played in this great city.
- 37:51Part of its history hanging from the center field flagpole.
- 37:55It was the two-one-sixth fast ball hit on one hop, smacked by Aparicio and gets him.
- 38:01Only because Aparicio felt Kennedy was be unable to pull Wally Bunker was Louis able to have a play on what looked like a sure base hit.
- 38:27Aparicio was turned around as he spirited and was still able to throw the power all in time.
- 38:32A great play by the Baltimore Shorts out.
- 38:35Here is Osteen takes the strike.
- 38:37Baltimore playing Osteen the ultimate compliment.
- 38:40They played a pitcher to pull, yet they did not play Kennedy to pull.
- 38:44Osteen has a home run. He hit it in Atlanta against the Braves.
- 38:49Strike one pitch before, fast ball. On the corner, strike two.
- 38:53Two down, bases empty in the third. No score.
- 38:56The totals are identical. No runs and one hit for each side.
- 39:01Two exceptional defensive plays.
- 39:03Hurt Bluffery and now Louis Aparicio.
- 39:06Strike two pitch, fast ball fouled away off to the left upstairs.
- 39:09And Osteen is still there, 0-2.
- 39:14Well now I don't know. You know they used to tell us that Bunker threw hard before he heard his arm.
- 39:21He's not exactly throwing change up there. 0-2.
- 39:27Wally Reddy in the right hander, back to the plate, way outside, all the way to the backstop.
- 39:32It was either going to be a change or a curve ball and he released it somewhere back in his right ear.
- 39:37And it landed somewhere back at home plate.
- 39:40And it is 58 feet from home plate to the backstop and he hit it on the fly.
- 39:481-2, the count to Claude Osteen.
- 39:53Bunker A and Wally delivers 1-2.
- 39:56Little Hein outside with a slider that didn't break much. 2-2.
- 40:01More wheels on deck.
- 40:10Our very deepest first, 2-2 pitch to Claude. Fast ball got him. 4 strikeouts for Wally Bunker. The Dodgers are out of order.
- 40:18And the score at the end of two and a half innings. The Dodgers nothing, Baltimore nothing.
- 40:23Wally Reddy in the right hander, back to the plate, way outside, all the way to the backstop.
- 40:40And it is 58 feet from home plate to the backstop.
- 40:54And it is 58 feet from home plate to the backstop.
- 41:10And it is 58 feet from home plate to the backstop.
- 41:25We pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 41:40And it is 58 feet from home plate to the backstop.
- 41:55And it is 58 feet from home plate to the backstop.
- 42:10And it is 58 feet from home plate to the backstop.
- 42:25And it is 58 feet from home plate to the backstop.
- 42:40And it is 58 feet from home plate to the backstop.
- 42:55The Dodgers meanwhile had an eye-catching play by Lou Johnson as he ran over and took a fly ball away from Willie Davis. Plus the double play when LaFever was decked by Big Johnny Powell but as the middleman still was able to get the man at first.
- 43:10Blair fouls another pitch and it is still 1-2. Billy Hunter over to get it.
- 43:211-2 the counter for Blair. Bottom of the third no score.
- 43:29Osteen nods yes. Left hand already back he comes. Fast ball. Hits the air to center field. Willie Davis hits the glove once and makes the catch.
- 43:39Boy I just wonder, huh? I wonder what he was thinking about when that ball was hit.
- 43:43Hopefully all of the Dodgers and Willie no doubt hoping to get that first one out of the way. Well it is out of the way. He has his feet wet now. He can go about his business.
- 43:53One out and here is catcher Andy Eschibarra. Right hand hit it.
- 44:00And there is one for six. It was so touching before the game to see the first string catcher Dick Brown who was operated on and catched one in this season throwing out the first ball to the Cunitipis Place, Eschibarra, who is jammed and hits one to Will.
- 44:15Morey up with it and across to Parker for the out. Two away. The batter now and getting an ovation as it goes as he works his way to home plate pitcher Wally Bunker.
- 44:35Wally Bunker right hand batter.
- 44:44Osteen into his wind up and the fastball a strike. Going one.
- 44:48They do not play Bunker to pull. The infield shading in towards first place. The outfield is relatively shallow and around the right.
- 44:56Osteen back to one. Fastball pulled. Is a hole at short. Wills has to go back to get it. Throws and gets it.
- 45:04Bunker able to pull Osteen anyway but Wills throws him out. Baltimore is down in order one, two, three and at the end of three innings of play. Dodgers nothing. Baltimore nothing.
- 45:14All on the big tape. All on the big tape to make it faster.
- 45:35Open a cool refreshing ball fastball. Quench your thirst with a beer that's long on good taste, light on you. All staff for over four generations. The choicest product of the brewer's life.
- 46:00You have a taste of beer, a taste of beer. All staff for over four generations.
- 46:16Along with Ben Scully, this is Bob Prince from Baltimore at Memorial Stadium. They have just announced the attendance. The largest single crowd ever to witness a baseball game here. 54,445.
- 46:30Now both teams are in the position of turning their lineup over for the second time. For in the three innings as each with an eight of a double play, nine men have gone to the plate and unsuccessfully have been able to do little enough.
- 46:45There's been some very spectacular fielding plays and so they turn the Dodger order upside again and Wills, Parker and Willie Davis will go to Wally Bunker. Here's Ben.
- 46:56All right Bob. Morrie Wills, Wes Parker and Willie Davis in that order. Fourth inning no score. Meade aside has been able to get a man to second base. Each side with one hit.
- 47:07Wills struck out in the first inning. Morrie is now 0-8 in the series. The infield looking for the bunt. Brooks Robinson is up inside the bag. His third, Johnny Powell is up even at first. Bunker into his windup and the pitch to Wills. He punts.
- 47:21Bunker down to get it, picks it up and throws him out. As we mentioned earlier, the Dodgers figured a bunt on Bunker. Wills ties and is thrown out in the batter, Wes Parker.
- 47:36Bunker struck out looking in the first inning. At the two live fastballs, he was caught looking at a breaking ball.
- 47:45Bunker led the Dodgers in strikeouts during the course of the regular season. And as a switch hitter is prone to strikeout left-handed more so than right-handed, Bunker's fastball is fouled back on one.
- 48:01No score in the fourth. Wally Bunker in Flaudo Steen.
- 48:11Parker waiting. Now Bunker into his windup and the strike one pitch on the way. Little slider that slips in and over. Good pitch, 0-2. So Bunker, who has an awful lot of motion, set Parker up with more motion than usual and then threw the off-beat slider in the count 0-2.
- 48:32Wally reading Etchibarron, the outfield about straight away on Parker and time called by Pellikoudis just as Bunker was ready to deliver the ball. It was Etchibarron who asked for time and Pellikoudis who granted it.
- 48:46to women, young Wally ready. Strike two-pitch to West Parker. Fastball hit into deep right-side of field, chasing it his poor Blair. It is over his head, takes one big bounce and goes over the fence for a double. And so Parker will be sent back to second base.
- 49:12It hits a 15-foot gravel warning track in right center and kangarooed over the 7-foot wire fence. So West Parker gets the first extra base hit as he bounces a double up into the playchutes in right center field.
- 49:27And with one out the batter will be Willie Davis. No runs, two hits, no errors for the Dodgers. No runs, one hit, no errors for the Orioles. We're in the fourth inning.
- 49:44So Willie Davis at the play. Willie hits a slice and five-ball to left field in the first inning you remember. And Sir Breffery made a great running catch. Now Willie up there trying to pick up Parker. Aparicio bird-dogging West to cut down his lead. Bunker ready in the fastball, a half-swing first strike.
- 50:01Willie tried to hold up but couldn't do it. In field around towards first so that Aparicio, while playing Willie Davis, at the same time can hold West Bunker at second base. It is his responsibility. Johnson is over near the hole on the right side.
- 50:21Fastball up and in to Willie to take them out of there. One ball and one strike.
- 50:36Bunker reading his signs. Now while he's set at the belt, looks back at Parker and works the play outside one-handed by Eschabar and ball two. Two and one. And Bunker decides he'd rather have another ball to work with and Pellicudas of Dodgers.
- 50:57The Dodgers with two hits barely took Bunker's glove off with a line drive in the second inning. Parker has just doubled. West getting a bad break. If the ball does not bounce over the seven-foot fence, he has himself a triple.
- 51:10For Baltimore, Johnny Powell a solid single to right field. All right Bunker is ready. Look at Parker.
- 51:18Now the two one-pitch. Fastball inside and low. Ball three. Three and one. The count to Willie.
- 51:28Ron Fairley on deck.
- 51:37Parker being shepherded by third base coach Preston Gomez. Able to see old Shadowing down there. Three one-pitch to Willie. Fastball hit in the air to right center field. Blair going over. He's there and makes the catch.
- 51:50Holding on at second is West Parker. So Willie Davis flies to right center to pull Blair and with two outs the batter Ron Fairley.
- 52:02Fairley a solid single in the second inning and of course now Bunker has to make a decision. Does he go with strength against strength?
- 52:10Willie has had a good live fastball today but Fairley is a fastball hitter and Etchibar not there to talk to him. Fairley hit a fastball to knock the glove off Bunker's hand the last time they tangled.
- 52:22Most of the time the pitcher will go strength with strength so that if you're going to beat him it has to be on his best pitch. All right Etchibar in the back of the plate.
- 52:33No score in the fourth inning. Two out and West Parker at second base. Jimmy LaFever on deck.
- 52:44Bunker right foot on the rubber. He has a rather open stance when he comes set so that if you're a hitter you can read Orioles on his chest.
- 52:52Fairley fouls the first one back on the screen on one. Instead of looking at Bunker's left side when he is set you are looking at his chest.
- 53:02One reason I believe he sets that way is that he has trouble pitching while holding a man on and has decided to find some kind of middle ground by opening up his stretch.
- 53:130-1 the count. Bunker looks back at Parker, catches him a second time. Now works Fairley fastball low one and one.
- 53:24No score. The Dodgers and Baltimore in the fourth inning with two out. The Dodgers no runs, two hits and no errors. The Birds no runs, a hit and no error.
- 53:34And Fairley trying to pick up West Parker from second base. Bunker's 1-1 hit. Breaking ball slider that stayed outside ball two, two and one.
- 53:51So the Dodgers lost a possible run here in the fourth inning. As Parker's ball turned out to be a ground rule double instead of a leg triple and then Willie Davis followed with a fly ball deep enough to normally have scored him.
- 54:03And it remains no score. 2-1 pitch to Fairley. Fastball that drives him back ball three. Bunker pitching very, very carefully to Fairley.
- 54:13And with first base open it's almost an unintentional, intentional walk. They're going to give him bad balls hoping he'll swing at it. 3-1.
- 54:28Gone back up to the plate. Bunker's dad, Wally checks Parker and delivers. Breaking ball is inside ball four.
- 54:35The Bunker a little bit afraid of coming in with his fastball to Fairley. Off-speed breaking balls and low fastballs and he walks in.
- 54:45So two out, runners at first and second and Jimmy Lefevre, the club's leader in RBIs and home runs, kicks in at the plate.
- 54:52Lefevre won for seven in the series, lifted a fly ball to Kurt Bleffery back in the second inning.
- 54:59Bunker trying to work himself out of the jam and the fastball is sliced foul off third, well back into the second deck in the count of one-one.
- 55:08To pay the attendance today, the largest crowd to ever see a game in Baltimore, 54,445. The proceeds a little short of a half a million dollars.
- 55:19The largest crowd to have seen a game prior to today here in Baltimore, a little over 52,000.
- 55:27Strike one pitch to Lefevre. Breaking ball outside, one and one.
- 55:38One ball and one strike. It counts to Jim Lefevre. Two out on the fourth, no score.
- 55:51Now Bunker's set at the bell. While they're ready in the one-one pitch, fastball fouls kicked into Etchie Barron Smith. One and two.
- 56:02On deck, Lou Johnson. The Dodgers left four men on base against Palmer and eight men on base against McNally.
- 56:13Have two men on with two out here on the fourth.
- 56:21Bunker ready. And the one-two pitch, way outside, one handed by Etchie Barnes, as again Bunker came within a few inches of throwing one away.
- 56:41Two and two, the count to Jim Lefevre. Fourth inning, no score. Wes Parker at second, Ron Fairley at first. Two out.
- 56:51Bunker checking with Etchie Barnes. Now the right hand are ready. And the two-two pitch, fastball, pop foul off to the left and slicing out of play.
- 57:00Etchie Barnes comes over to take a look, but that's all. It's in the lower deck. So it's still two and two.
- 57:10Lou Johnson, who proclaimed to all the Dodgers on the team bus that he insisted upon working Monday, is out on deck.
- 57:18As the Dodgers tried to shake themselves after having gone down rather easily to Baltimore, the first few games of the series.
- 57:28The Birds, of course, trying to sweep it and finish it at home.
- 57:33Two and two to Lefevre. Bunker ready. Delivered in the dirt, a great save by Etchie Barnes. A big play by Andy.
- 57:41He got his nose in the dirt to block that one. And Etchie Barnes, more and more, resembles a prize-winning goaltender in hockey right now.
- 57:49He's all over the place, behind the plate. Of course, with two out, the runners will be going. Parker from second, Fairley from first.
- 58:02Bunker set. Checking. The runners go, and the pitch is gone on this fight play.
- 58:14Five strikeouts for pitcher Wally Bunker. Will the Dodgers no runs one hit and two left? And the score at the end of the first half of the fourth inning.
- 58:23The Dodgers nothing, Baltimore nothing.
- 58:27Right now, let's bring in umpire Nick Pown for another story. Nick?
- 58:32One night in St. Louis, a pitcher known as Lazerfingers, told what appears a very wet pitch. I warned him about this, and I also mentioned he needs a shave.
- 58:40Golly gee, uncle. He says, while my beard is tough, my skin is tender as a mace. Marvel, I reply. What you need is a second brand new razor just out. For a gelette technic. Very sharp against the beard, but very light against the skin.
- 58:57It's the lightest touch to shaving, and it ends blade-handling forever. Six super stainless steel shaving edges are curled and sealed inside a cartridge.
- 59:06Flip a lever on the new edge locks in place. Which later I warned Lazerfingers again about his wet pitch and I start with, that is a very handsome shave you got there.
- 59:16Why thank you, he says. I now shave with a gelette technic. One flip and you got a sharp edge. Yes, I reply. It's just like your wet pitch. One flip and you get replaced.
- 59:33As Ben Kelly was telling you, the Dodgers are going down on those fastballs. And in the first game of the series, 12 strikeouts with Drabowski getting 11, Palmer and going 9.
- 59:5212 strikeouts ready for a Dodger fans on me. First pitch D'Aparicio is the first pitch in the left field for a base hit.
- 1:00:04The Claude Hosein in first pitch D'Aparicio is whacked into left field and the batter will be Kert Wefferey.
- 1:00:11D'Aparicio likes to run. Held on by Wes Parker. But Lewis is not quite the runner he was back in 1959 when the Dodgers saw him in the World Series as a member of the Chicago Whitesides.
- 1:00:24He won a stole 57 bases then. He was about 25 this year.
- 1:00:32So D'Aparicio, a solid single to left field. And now Chris Palakoutis talking to one of the Park ushers about a possible problem in center field.
- 1:00:43And now that will be relayed to the public address announcer. Kert Wefferey, the left hand hitting left fielder, is grounded out to Parker in the first inning.
- 1:00:51Wes holding the bag on D'Aparicio.
- 1:00:54Hosein set at the bell. Looks at Lewis. Blefary bunched up along the first base line foul on one.
- 1:01:02Where in the bottom of the fourth inning no score. The Dodgers no runs, two hits, no errors.
- 1:01:06Baltimore no runs, two hits, no errors.
- 1:01:09Parker now wants to get his sign squared away with Hosein to make sure Claude doesn't go over there when Wes is coming to the plate.
- 1:01:17There are some iron or steel chairs in center field. The sun is being reflected off the tops of those chairs and consequently creating a hazard for the hitters.
- 1:01:27And they are asking those chairs to be folded and put away.
- 1:01:31Strike one, Pitch to Blefary, fouled off the bunch. Then the count, O and two.
- 1:01:35Kert is a pretty good runner.
- 1:01:45The Lewis Aparicio, one for two today, three for twelve in the series.
- 1:01:51Standing at first base here in the fourth inning no score.
- 1:01:54Wally Bunker muscled his way out of trouble in the fourth inning.
- 1:01:58And now Osteen working.
- 1:02:00Thorpe set and delivers. Pitch over, strike three as the foul tipped off the bat of Blefary.
- 1:02:05He checks his swing, but the ball hits the bat and then pops into Roseboro's mid. One away.
- 1:02:12The batter, Frank Robinson, that's Osteen's second strikeout.
- 1:02:21Osteen pitching his game up to here. He is not an overpowering pitcher. Claude will not get the roars from the crowds as the strikeout man.
- 1:02:30But he just quietly kind of noodles along and he won seventeen games.
- 1:02:36Here's Frank Robinson struck out in the first inning.
- 1:02:40Right hand hitting right fielder. One out, fourth inning no score. Aparicio at first base.
- 1:02:45Osteen decides he better drive little Louis back.
- 1:02:50Dodgers playing Robinson to full.
- 1:02:53It is only 309 feet down the line here at Baltimore, but it is a tremendous shot.
- 1:02:59He hit it out of the park and Robinson did that this year.
- 1:03:03Osteen ready in the pitch to Robbie. Hit to the fist down to third baseman Kennedy. To Lefebvre for one, to Parker not in time.
- 1:03:10Aparicio took Lefebvre out on a bad throw by John Kennedy.
- 1:03:15Kennedy juggled the ball, did not have a good grip, and his throw was into the runner.
- 1:03:21So that even though there would have been plenty of time, Lefebvre had to glove the ball while going into Aparicio and little Louis decked in it.
- 1:03:29And the throw away off the mark.
- 1:03:32So the Dodgers failed to execute on a double play ball and we'll see just how important that is.
- 1:03:38Two out. Usually the smooth fielding Kennedy, but he was handcuffed a bit on that one.
- 1:03:44Brooks Robinson to batter. Fastball is at by Osteen down to Wills who kicks it into Lefebvre in time.
- 1:03:52Wills dropped the ball but just shoveled to Lefebvre in time to force Robinson.
- 1:03:57And in the fourth inning for Baltimore, no runs, one hit, a man left. And the score at the end of four innings of play.
- 1:04:04The Dodgers nothing, Baltimore nothing.
- 1:04:10And now a word from someone in the stands.
- 1:04:12Here's a man in the stands wearing a baseball cap with a bee on it. He looks rather dejected. What's wrong sir?
- 1:04:18I tell you things this ain't been the same since the Brooklyn Dodgers move.
- 1:04:21Oh?
- 1:04:22Man, he sounds all like power and speed and all that.
- 1:04:25Well it is too bad they left Brooklyn.
- 1:04:27Too bad. Lady was a crime when they started a new season and was the biggest thing around.
- 1:04:32Thank you.
- 1:04:33And another thing, look at that lineup they got this year. Why don't you take Dodge Power, 172.25, 273.
- 1:04:38Both aren't very high daddy averages.
- 1:04:40Dodge averages, I'm talking about the power lineup for the new Dodge Dodge.
- 1:04:44You know it's a really new car in a compact field.
- 1:04:47And what I mean all new. New roof line, new curved window glass.
- 1:04:51And inside wow, even the girls will flip when they see the Dodge.
- 1:04:55Dodge, Dodge, I thought you were talking about the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 1:04:59Lady, I said Dodgers. Didn't you listen?
- 1:05:02Me brother-in-law is a Brooklyn Dodge dealer. He's got a Dodge dealership on Poplar Avenue.
- 1:05:07Oh really? What happened to him?
- 1:05:09He moved to Queens.
- 1:05:11Melissa Ben Scully along with Bob Prince sending you the third game of the 1966 World Series from Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 1:05:23It's a dandy through four, no score.
- 1:05:25Each side with two hits, a couple of sparkling plays and two double plays, one on each side.
- 1:05:31In the fifth inning for the Dodgers, Lou Johnson, Johnny Roseboro, and John Kennedy.
- 1:05:36If there has been a break so far, it would be the ball hit by Parker that was turned into a ground rule double play as it bounced over the right center field fence.
- 1:05:45Normally, West runs that ball out for three.
- 1:05:48But instead of scoring, he had to hold it second on the fly ball by Willie Davis.
- 1:05:52That's about the only thing that could be considered a break through four innings.
- 1:05:56The first pitch to Lou Johnson in the dirt, ball one, one and all.
- 1:06:00Lou was jammed by Wally Bunker in the second inning, rolled one to short, it was turned into a double play.
- 1:06:06Bunker into his windup, his one-oh pitch fastball on the inside corner for a strike, one and one.
- 1:06:13Bunker has struck out five.
- 1:06:16He has walked one and allowed the two hits.
- 1:06:20Osteen has allowed two hits.
- 1:06:22He has two strikeouts and no walks.
- 1:06:25Johnson waiting one and one.
- 1:06:27Bunker ready, Wally back with a soft curve full foul outside of third.
- 1:06:32Taram's off the box seats and fielded down there by Bill Joukowski of the National A's.
- 1:06:43Johnson, Roseboro and Kennedy, the way the Dodgers stack up here in the fifth inning.
- 1:06:48Bunker into his windup and Wally's one-two pitch.
- 1:06:51Breaking ball, looped into left field, charging his referee, but it'll drop in front of him for a base hit.
- 1:06:56Lew makes a huge turn and then comes scampering back to first.
- 1:07:02Of all the Dodgers, Johnson is a razzle-dazzle runner to first base.
- 1:07:06Most runners go to first base on a single, but Johnson goes to second base on a single and is only chased back to first.
- 1:07:16Here's Johnny Roseboro.
- 1:07:20Hit number three for the Dodgers and Johnny Roseboro who struck out in the third inning at the plate.
- 1:07:26John is one for nine in the series.
- 1:07:32Bunker set it above, looks at Johnson.
- 1:07:35The push to Roseboro popped up on the left side.
- 1:07:38It's Robinson looking at Aparicio and now Robinson makes the catch for the outs.
- 1:07:43Brooks appeared to be looking for some help and then stayed with the ball as Aparicio came over
- 1:07:48and they have a little chat right now.
- 1:07:51So Roseboro, first ball hitting, pops up, one away and here is John Kennedy.
- 1:07:55Kennedy had a shot up the middle and it was a great play by Aparicio to take a base hit away from him back in the third inning.
- 1:08:08So John Kennedy at the plate.
- 1:08:11One out in the fifth inning, no score.
- 1:08:15Remember it was scoreless going into the fifth inning of the second game.
- 1:08:20And then Baltimore pitched over three runs.
- 1:08:24The trips to Kennedy filed away.
- 1:08:26Down the right field line slicing out of play deep into the lower deck and the count of one-one.
- 1:08:43Roseboro making the out in the inning so we have one away.
- 1:08:48Kennedy at the plate, one-one to John.
- 1:08:51Bunker set it above and flips over to first base driving Johnson back.
- 1:08:55Since the pitcher is due to follow, Johnson might very well try something with Kennedy at the plate here in the fifth.
- 1:09:03Bunker is set, watching loose, still checking.
- 1:09:07And the bluffs going and the soft curve is hit up the third.
- 1:09:10Brooks Robinson to Dave Johnson and he's submarineed and there's no play at first.
- 1:09:15Boy, you talk about taking the second baseman out like a shoe salesman.
- 1:09:19Johnson went right down to the toes after him.
- 1:09:22So a four-slay, five-four, two out.
- 1:09:27Of course, Johnny Powell, he really took out LaFever back in the second inning, all legitimate plays.
- 1:09:35And Johnson now just flipping Dave Johnson down around the shoes and up-ending.
- 1:09:40So with two out, it is John Kennedy at first, Claude Osteen to batter.
- 1:09:45No score in the fifth inning.
- 1:09:48Bunker set it above, lobbed, throw it at first to drive Kennedy back.
- 1:09:58If there is any surprise at all in the game,
- 1:10:03it is the fact that what Dodger runners have been on base have not even tried to steal or run.
- 1:10:08It hits the Osteen outside.
- 1:10:10Of course, there'd only be two of them, Fairleigh in the second inning,
- 1:10:14and he was doubled out, and Johnson here in the fifth, and he was fourth.
- 1:10:201-0 to counter Claude Osteen.
- 1:10:22Bunker set, looks over at Kennedy, now Wally to the plate.
- 1:10:26Fast ball low and inside, ball two.
- 1:10:29Osteen's power, and you use the word advisedly when talking about a pitcher,
- 1:10:34but his power basically is to center field.
- 1:10:37He's not going to pull one in the corner very often,
- 1:10:39but he can hit the ball a surprisingly long distance.
- 1:10:42He had a triple this year that hit the center field fence at Dodger Stadium on the fly.
- 1:10:46That's 410 feet.
- 1:10:48And his home run in Atlanta against the Braves cleared the center field fence.
- 1:10:56Here's the 2-0 pitch to Claude.
- 1:10:58Ball hit into left center, Blefrey has to go back on the ball,
- 1:11:01still going back and makes the catch for the hour.
- 1:11:04Almost to the warning track, ball was hit about 365 feet.
- 1:11:09No runs ahead, a man left, and the score is yet to four and a half innings.
- 1:11:12The Dodgers nothing, Baltimore nothing.
- 1:11:15A great new filter cigarette is born,
- 1:11:24with the name Camel.
- 1:11:29New Camel filters.
- 1:11:32New Camel filters, the ones we want to drink.
- 1:11:40New Camel filters.
- 1:11:42This is the one born rich, rich in taste,
- 1:11:46with that big Camel head start on flavors.
- 1:11:49Now that great Camel heritage of real taste comes to you in a great new filter cigarette.
- 1:11:55No other can compare in flavor.
- 1:11:58No other can compare in quality to new Camel filters.
- 1:12:02This is the one we want to try.
- 1:12:05From the Camel filters, the ones we want to drink.
- 1:12:16Right now we'll pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:12:20This is your World Series station for the Valley, KCRA, AM and FM Sacramento.
- 1:12:25Here's a point to ponder from Jim Ostoby's Shell service.
- 1:12:29Up till now even the best premium motor oil could contribute to harmful ash buildup in your engine.
- 1:12:34But Super Shell motor oil doesn't.
- 1:12:37Super Shell produces no additive ash, so it helps your engine run more smoothly.
- 1:12:42Try Super Shell with your next oil change at Jim Ostoby's Shell service.
- 1:12:479th and Q, Downtown Sacramento.
- 1:12:53Through four and a half innings for the Dodgers, no runs, three hits and no errors.
- 1:12:57They have left three.
- 1:12:58For Baltimore, no runs, two hits, no errors.
- 1:13:00They have not left a man.
- 1:13:02Now as we go to the bottom of the fifth, no score on the ballgame.
- 1:13:04For more Play-By-Play, the voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates, here's Bob Princh.
- 1:13:09Thank you very much, Ben and Hello again everybody.
- 1:13:12Boo Powell who took a hanging curve ball and ran into the right for a base hit on the second inning will lead it off.
- 1:13:18Powell, Dave Johnson and Paul Blair.
- 1:13:21The outfield has now swung around to the right.
- 1:13:23They'll gap him in left center and they've over shifted the infield considerably.
- 1:13:27Fairly buried deep in right.
- 1:13:29First pitch, a fast ball, dodge him and over for a call strike. It's nothing in the line.
- 1:13:39Going into the bottom of the fifth, Osteen has seen no serious run for that close to him as yet.
- 1:13:44The O-1 delivery has a curve ball that slips him straight up high around the bill with a cap.
- 1:13:48The ball one strike, one count.
- 1:13:52To the Dodger fans, of course, alarming that they have now gone 20 in the third and he's about a score.
- 1:13:58All the other stuff we've heard, we're going to be talking about it soon.
- 1:14:02Pitch to Bunker. Pitch to Powell for most seen.
- 1:14:04That's wider for a call strike. A beauty to the outbacks on their one and two.
- 1:14:12One ball, two strikes. 54,445.
- 1:14:17The largest assembly ever in Memorial Stadium in Baltimore to witness a baseball game.
- 1:14:22One ball, two strikes.
- 1:14:24Powell deep in that batter's box. Curve ball hammered way into the upper deck off the left side foul.
- 1:14:30One and two. No score. We are in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:14:34In game three of the series with the Dodgers virtually at their backs to the law.
- 1:14:45Talking to Baltimore manager Hank Bauer as to how the ball's carried here in the daytime as against tonight.
- 1:14:51He said he had little or no opportunity to make the comment because they played mostly night ball.
- 1:14:56One, two delivery. Bounced into the dirt. And it's two balls, two strikes.
- 1:15:00We'll see if Roseboro attempts to keep the ball in play. He does.
- 1:15:06Lots of times when a ball is bounced into the dirt, it gets scuffed.
- 1:15:11The pitcher, if he can keep it that way, would like to.
- 1:15:16Two balls, two strikes. Powell leading it off. No score in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:15:21Baltimore.
- 1:15:25Had that and of course one of the strongest and biggest men in all of baseball.
- 1:15:29Boog Powell at the plate.
- 1:15:34Curve ball weakly tapped down the right line going foul.
- 1:15:37That will be fielded by Dean Woodling.
- 1:15:39Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:15:41Woodling also is the batting coach for the Baltimore Royals.
- 1:15:48Very pleasant, a fun little day here in Baltimore.
- 1:15:51A little hazy in the sky right now, but it's what the ball players would refer to as a high sky.
- 1:15:57They prefer a little cloud or two up there so they can sort of judge the baseballs when they get up in the air.
- 1:16:03Two, two pitch. A curve ball popped up down the right field line. Looks terrible.
- 1:16:07The partner is going in foul territory. Stays with it and makes a foul ball catch about 45 feet down the line and there's one away.
- 1:16:17The batter now is going to be Dave Johnson. You've got it into a double play in the second inning.
- 1:16:22Boog Powell having been the runner at first and when Boog went in to take out LaFever, it looked like a rather unequal contest.
- 1:16:32So Dave Johnson in. Scoreless bar, Dodgers no runs on three hits. The Orioles no runs on two hits.
- 1:16:39Broken back, down ball to Parker beautifully up on to Osteen and they execute a fine play.
- 1:16:46A broken back, slivers of the bat going out in the infield. Parker with a magnificent hand going over to the right.
- 1:16:52The ball ran up his wrist but he came out up with it and Osteen covering properly. They get the out.
- 1:16:57So it's two down and the Baltimore fifth. There is no score.
- 1:17:05No question what that time Osteen sent a good tailing pitch on Dave Johnson because he hit it right on the end of the bat.
- 1:17:15Paul Blair.
- 1:17:19Now Paul Blair is in. He's 0 for three in the series. 0 for four actually having flied to center field in the series.
- 1:17:26He's got that hand better. The outfield swings a little bit around to the left side. Gap him in right center field.
- 1:17:31Osteen sent him a breaking ball. He hits it deep.
- 1:17:34Backfield is gone. Home run.
- 1:18:02Paul Blair gets a herbing home run over the 380 mark into the bleachers in left center and the Orioles lead 1-0.
- 1:18:12About an hour is Andy Etchibar a fastball if it needs a call strike.
- 1:18:18So the fire power breaks loose here with two down against the pitcher who really did not surrender too many home runs.
- 1:18:25Six all year. Osteen's next delivery breaks inside.
- 1:18:32That is Blair's first world series hit and one heel long remember.
- 1:18:36One been up in Baltimore. Two down, none on and the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:18:40That is their third series home run.
- 1:18:46Osteen comes back with a fastball shot down toward short. Will takes the big hop, plays it on across the first and that will retire the fast.
- 1:18:53So the hitting show, one run on the home run by Blair and of course the own hit of the inning.
- 1:18:59And at the end of the five full innings of Blair. Baltimore leads the matchers 1-0.
- 1:19:06For the question friends when did Don Larsen pitch his perfect world series game?
- 1:19:11The answer? Nicole Stad has the answer on special six packs.
- 1:19:15World series six packs. On every pack a highlight of world series history.
- 1:19:20Join them all and be a world series expert while enjoying the most refreshing taste in beer.
- 1:19:27Swing for a double. Friends pick them up two at a time.
- 1:19:56World series six packs of Ball-Stav. The choices product of the Brewers are.
- 1:20:02Ball-Stav Brewing Company, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 1:20:08The end of five innings Baltimore run on three hits. The Dodgers no runs on three hits.
- 1:20:13And for the third time in the three games, Baltimore getting out in front.
- 1:20:17And of course the Dodger attack is based on the fact that they are not in a situation where they have to hit their way back.
- 1:20:24They have to run, steal, and play hit and run. But as soon as you take the lead on them you have already tied up some of their more formidable weapons.
- 1:20:31It is also a club remember that has been blank seven key times during the regular season.
- 1:20:36And you could see Osteen's shoulders sag a bit when he realized that he along with co-faction Drysdale finds himself behind in the score.
- 1:20:45And of course overall the club behind in the series two games tonight.
- 1:20:49To the sixth inning one to nothing Baltimore. Let's get back to Bob.
- 1:20:54A bit of by-play that had the fans stirring here also. The excellent Baltimore ground crew and the Ricky Sick Music.
- 1:21:01They just swept that infield off about as quickly as anything you've ever seen done.
- 1:21:06Here's Maury Wells now. Stuck out in the first inning. Went out on a bunch tie in the fourth, such as the first.
- 1:21:17The outfield puts the Richie Asperin shift on Will. Swinging Bluffery over toward the left line. Blair well over and shallow.
- 1:21:25And Brooks Robinson. He was up that at third. They pitched down low for the ball.
- 1:21:32They had just announced from the press box the measurement of approximately 430 feet on the home run by Paul Blair.
- 1:21:39It was tagged. No question about that. Bunker comes in to Will. He bangs right up the middle for the solid base hit.
- 1:21:46Maury took sort of like a six iron swing that time. Went right down on the low pitch and came out with it.
- 1:21:51And in the center field he goes.
- 1:21:55You'll recall Will threw a base on balls in the first game and promptly stole second base.
- 1:22:00Now he's up there with the tying run. At first base. One to nothing Baltimore and we are in the Dodger's six.
- 1:22:09The batter is Wes Parker who struck out and hit a book roll double in the fourth inning on a drive into the gap in right center
- 1:22:15that bounced off the warning track and in front of the scoreboard.
- 1:22:19Will's is measuring Bunker.
- 1:22:23And there's the lob toss over. No damage.
- 1:22:26Will's will just take everything he can on him. He'll work at it.
- 1:22:30Now Wes Parker steps out to ask Platum Park Chris Pellicute or something.
- 1:22:36When Will's establishes his straight stolen base record.
- 1:22:41Bunker is checking now on Walt Maury. Long left.
- 1:22:45Well then he dives back in headlong and he's really testing him.
- 1:22:49He had a tremendous man behind him in Junior Gilliam for many years.
- 1:22:54The man who could go deep in the ball and strike count who was so adept with the bat.
- 1:22:58He could take the two strikes at the beginning to give Will's his chance.
- 1:23:02And then if he thought Will's was going to be caught, would flick a foul or get something on that battlenet ball.
- 1:23:09Parker in it.
- 1:23:12Will looks over to first by Bunker.
- 1:23:15Now it goes well but as the ball gets down toward Boog Powell and it's ruled what?
- 1:23:19Foul ball or fair ball? Platum Park says a fair ball and Will's goes to the second in molestation.
- 1:23:24A one hopper down to Boog Powell.
- 1:23:27Most of his body, and there's a lot of it, was in Powell's territory when he accepted that chance.
- 1:23:32And the Platum Park made the call of a fair ball and Will's now in the second.
- 1:23:37So the Dodgers get the tying run in the top of the sixth.
- 1:23:40Baltimore leading one and nothing.
- 1:23:42In the second base, Maury Will's base hit in the sixth was his first hit of the series.
- 1:23:51Now Willie Davis, who was robbed, has been described on a brilliant catch by Bluffery down the left field line.
- 1:23:58Then fly the center in the fourth. He's over two.
- 1:24:01A free throw in behind Will. Long fly ball in the right center field. Paul Blair dropping the sunglasses, getting back on the warning track.
- 1:24:09Will's is tagging. The catch is made.
- 1:24:11And Will's will just try to defer it on molestation.
- 1:24:14So it's two down.
- 1:24:16And the Dodgers now get their first base run of the third.
- 1:24:26Ron Fairley with a single taking Bunker's glove off and a walk.
- 1:24:35A little conference now at Berichtio Bunker in Etcheverry.
- 1:24:40For the Orioles, through their five, one run on three hits and no errors.
- 1:24:44For the Dodgers, here in the after five and two-thirds for them, no runs on four hits and no errors.
- 1:24:53Home run by Paul Blair is first hit in the series.
- 1:24:58One, of course, he'll long remember.
- 1:25:01So Ron Fairley is the batter.
- 1:25:03The outfield swings to the right on him. Will's up third.
- 1:25:06Bunker from the line that delivers throws it low, ball one.
- 1:25:11Booth Powell is deep near the edge of the outfield grass over toward the line.
- 1:25:16Fairley is giving a big gap on the shortstop side.
- 1:25:19Robinson up Eden with a base.
- 1:25:21But Berichtio is well over almost behind second, not quite.
- 1:25:26One ball on those strikes to wind up on the pitch.
- 1:25:29Little Papper out in front of the plate coming up for it is Bunker, Booth Powell and now he is in.
- 1:25:38Twelve innings short, no runs, one hit, no errors and one Dodger left.
- 1:25:43At the end of five and a half, he's a play.
- 1:25:46Baltimore one, but Los Angeles Statues nothing.
- 1:25:51Say, if you own an electric razor, I want to give you fair warning.
- 1:25:55Just don't you listen to what I'm going to say, especially if you're happy with your shaver and you want to stay happy with it.
- 1:26:03Because Gillette has some news that may make you very unhappy with your electric shaver.
- 1:26:08News about a razor blade, a new razor blade with a miracle plastic coating baked onto the edge.
- 1:26:14A blade invented and patented by Gillette.
- 1:26:16If you try this blade, here's what we predict will happen.
- 1:26:20One, you'll discover that this isn't just a new blade, but a whole new standard of shaving.
- 1:26:26Two, you'll feel how much less polar is with that plastic coating on the edge.
- 1:26:31Three, you'll be hopelessly spoiled.
- 1:26:34Four, you may never be able to go back to your electric razor.
- 1:26:38And five, you won't know whether to thank us or write us a nasty letter.
- 1:26:43Are you game enough to give it a try? Ask for the spoiler.
- 1:26:46Alias, the Gillette Super-Saber.
- 1:27:01Well, Wally Bunker leads it off, gets a nice round of applause.
- 1:27:05He's leading in this fall game one to nothing.
- 1:27:08Ron Fairley appears to be in some physical distress as he trotted out to right field.
- 1:27:15Could have pulled a muscle trying to beat out that infield.
- 1:27:19Tapper, I'm seeing his end before he strikes.
- 1:27:23There's a little off the breaking ball that time.
- 1:27:25Bunker's out of the short in the third inning.
- 1:27:32Best ball of all, ball on.
- 1:27:35Phil Regan and Bob Miller, two right-handers, are up for the bat.
- 1:27:48Big cut by Bunker, one and two.
- 1:27:55The youngster here in Baltimore who was in his uniform national league, he is the batboy,
- 1:27:59who, well, much younger than he is now, tragically lost both his hands in a fire and uses hooks.
- 1:28:06But they say that he is a tremendous athlete of all too classic.
- 1:28:10Tech free, as Carl, as Osteen came right down Broadway with it.
- 1:28:19Third strikeout, the batter now is Aparicio, down to the second and single to left.
- 1:28:23This youngster, as we said, is the batboy for the visiting team.
- 1:28:27In this case, the Dodgers and the National League.
- 1:28:31But he's very adept at football, golf, basketball, and everything,
- 1:28:34to show that when the end of capital is his, he can be overcome.
- 1:28:39Aparicio, right hand batter, swings a long one out in the right center,
- 1:28:42and Woody Davis runs over there and gets under without any trouble involving him,
- 1:28:46and it's still a medium line drive in the right center field.
- 1:28:50Baltimore leading one to nothing with two down and the Baltimore six.
- 1:28:55Home run by Paul Blair, a drive of over 400 feet in the left center field.
- 1:29:01Bluffery is in now. He granted the first and assisted and was called out on strike.
- 1:29:14They'll play Bluffery definitely to throw, open stance, left hand batter.
- 1:29:18Osteen's in with his fastball at the belt for a strike call, two and one.
- 1:29:31No ball, one strike.
- 1:29:33Light-kicked high, sends a sailing fish outside about the bill of the cap of all, one strike, one count.
- 1:29:38The Dodgers now have drawn 21 and a third innings without a score.
- 1:29:45So the so-called weak Baltimore 15 staff will not get any testimony about that from the Dodgers batter.
- 1:29:53A ball and two strikes.
- 1:30:02One ball, two strikes.
- 1:30:05Osteen getting the sign now from Roseboro wasting no time, comes in with his curveball,
- 1:30:09rips the right end of the play by Parker leaping high and steering that one.
- 1:30:15Fine, domestic play by West Parker on a line drive hit right over the bat.
- 1:30:21Go for Baltimore in the sixth, three up and three down.
- 1:30:25At the end of sixth inning, Baltimore won Los Angeles Dodgers nothing.
- 1:30:30This is Joe Garagiol.
- 1:30:32Your Dodger has a free gift waiting for you that should make the 1966 World Series even more enjoyable.
- 1:30:39It's my World Series score book, which contains fun, facts, and score sheets for as many as seven games.
- 1:30:45We honestly feel that it's something different.
- 1:30:48Besides keeping score in this book, you can find out why the flag on the grandstand and the drop on the foul line can both be important to a World Series team.
- 1:30:57You'll read about the player who publicly predicted before the series that his team would lose.
- 1:31:03And you'll also get some tips that will enable you to look ahead to how certain plays might work out.
- 1:31:08It's absolutely free at the Dodge dealer.
- 1:31:11All part of his service for you called customer care.
- 1:31:14It's the way of doing business that puts the customer first.
- 1:31:18Pick up a free copy of Joe Garagiol's World Series score book at the Dodge dealer.
- 1:31:24Vince Cully along with Bob Prince from Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 1:31:28We're at the Orioles to run three hits and no errors.
- 1:31:31The Dodgers no runs four hits and no errors.
- 1:31:33And a reminder, the fourth game of the World Series will be played tomorrow here in Baltimore at 2 p.m.
- 1:31:39Warm-up time at 1.45 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
- 1:31:43Let's go to the 7th, 1-0 Baltimore, and back to Bob.
- 1:31:46And Jim LeFevre then.
- 1:31:49He is 0 for 2, 1 for 8 in the series.
- 1:31:52Slid to left field in the second and he struck out in the fourth.
- 1:32:06Regan tossing alone now in the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:32:13Wally Bunker working to switch batting with Beaver.
- 1:32:16And there's a drive in the deep right, but Frank Robinson appears to have it measured.
- 1:32:19He does. Makes an excess high catch on the line drive to deep right.
- 1:32:26The Dodgers have put some wood on the ball to Bunker, but haven't been able to find the hole.
- 1:32:31Here's Lou Johnson now who bounced into a double play in the second inning and looped the single in the fifth to left field.
- 1:32:38Baltimore won the Dodgers nothing in the top half of the 7th inning of the third game of the series.
- 1:32:44Lou Johnson.
- 1:32:55Wind up the pitch. Lou Johnson takes the lower ball on Bunker.
- 1:32:58When in the wind up motion, we'll keep the ball in his glove, a la Bob Buell of the National League, who then,
- 1:33:07in his wind up then goes right to the ball and throws it.
- 1:33:09From the stretch, he will then hold the ball behind his back.
- 1:33:12Here's the 1-0 pitch.
- 1:33:14Lou chops off the left side. That Risho goes over and hits out his glove, dies in the shallow center field.
- 1:33:19Lou Johnson brings around first and then starts to go in.
- 1:33:22And as Blair falls down, he decides his big back to first base.
- 1:33:26That he'd known, of course, that Blair was going to fall down. He gets into second easily.
- 1:33:30But he's not that cosmic.
- 1:33:34Stu Miller is now up for Baltimore.
- 1:33:37That is the fifth Dodger hit. Johnson is 2 for 3.
- 1:33:43And John Roseborough to batter now. John's stuck out and pops the third.
- 1:33:49Looks for the moment as though Aparicio would not get to the ball.
- 1:33:52When he did, he partially deflected it, dying in shallow center.
- 1:33:55Johnson realizing he might be able to get in there, saw Blair partially overrun the ball.
- 1:34:00And then as he started back, it was too late for him to generate steam.
- 1:34:04Roseborough flat ball in the center. Blair coming in.
- 1:34:08Cat falls off his head, but he makes the catch. That's the main thing.
- 1:34:17So it's 2 down, 1-0 Baltimore in the top half of the seventh inning on a home run by Paul Blair, his first hit in the series.
- 1:34:28John Kennedy, who was out on a brilliant play as been described by Aparicio back in the third, bounced into a fourth play as 0 for 2.
- 1:34:38And they remembered that the Baltimore Club led the American League teams in defensive play.
- 1:34:43They have had really outstanding defensive play, and their infield is very adept.
- 1:34:48And Powell was excellent on the low throw. He can dig them out of there.
- 1:34:54And then John Kennedy waited, delivering through for a strike.
- 1:34:59Ed Watt is also up.
- 1:35:03So it's Miller and Watt and Regan alone.
- 1:35:10No balls, one strike to Kennedy.
- 1:35:13Luke Johnson, who can move, is the runner at first.
- 1:35:16Bunker checks him over there and throws, and Lou scrambles back in.
- 1:35:20Nothing and 1.
- 1:35:2454,445.
- 1:35:28They paid attendance here this afternoon in Baltimore.
- 1:35:31Bunker is the long look, not a pitch, and he just missed outside with it, 1-1.
- 1:35:37A good break that time by Lou Johnson, which is the mark of a fine baseman, as though he would be going.
- 1:35:47One ball, one strike.
- 1:35:50The fever opened in him by landing a hard drive to right that was gobbled up by Frank Robinson.
- 1:35:55Then Johnson swinged.
- 1:35:57Roseboro lopped it slowly.
- 1:36:00And it feels like a sex swing catcher right back at the mound.
- 1:36:03Bunker gets another, what's this?
- 1:36:05Kennedy attempting to check his swing as Johnson hit a real good break on it.
- 1:36:10No runs, no hits, no errors, and the man laps into 6-1-1-1.
- 1:36:13The Oriole won the Dodgers' medal.
- 1:36:21A great new filter cigarette is born.
- 1:36:27Born with the name Camel.
- 1:36:33New Camel filters.
- 1:36:35New Camel filters the one-run race.
- 1:36:42New Camel filters.
- 1:36:44This is the one born rich.
- 1:36:47Rich in taste, with a big Camel head start on flavor.
- 1:36:51Now that great Camel heritage of real taste comes to you in a great new filter cigarette.
- 1:36:57No other can compare in flavor.
- 1:37:00No other can compare in quality to new Camel filters.
- 1:37:04This is the one you'll want to try.
- 1:37:07New Camel filters the one-run race.
- 1:37:13New Camel filters the one-run race.
- 1:37:20Along with Vince Kelly, Bob Brent speaking to you from Memorial Stadium in Baltimore,
- 1:37:24where the Orioles have the lead of 1-0.
- 1:37:27In a game that has had a lot of thrills, they've seen some tremendous pitching,
- 1:37:32and only one breakthrough, and with two outs,
- 1:37:35The Orioles have found a fist to their liking and hammered it deep into left field over 400 feet,
- 1:37:40and thus the Orioles lead on their third 1966 series home run.
- 1:37:47Frank Robinson, who struck out and bounced into a force play, will lead off the Orioles 7.
- 1:37:58The outfield plays him fairly straight away, but deep.
- 1:38:02As Kennedy and Wuerl's overshifting on the shortstop side and third base side,
- 1:38:06as Osteen, in what could be his last appearance, comes in with a breaking ball inside of him, he has a ball.
- 1:38:12Osteen is the scheduled batter in the Dodger 8.
- 1:38:19One ball on Osteen.
- 1:38:22To Frank Robinson.
- 1:38:25Osteen again ready, hirky-jirky motion, there's a high boundary down toward Kennedy,
- 1:38:28he comes in one-hands of all nicely, the throw to Pucker, and there's one away.
- 1:38:32Baltimore leading one to nothing.
- 1:38:35One out in the bottom of the 7.
- 1:38:38Brooke Robinson the batter.
- 1:38:41He is over two, and in the second inning when Willie Davis was all set to camp under a fly ball and hauled it in,
- 1:38:50Lou Johnson hustled right in front of him and took it right away.
- 1:38:55A similar type play that was much shorter distance occurred when Roseboro took one off of Parker in Dodger Stadium.
- 1:39:02So there was Lou, Parker was perhaps the most surprised man in the ballpark.
- 1:39:09Brooke Robinson, a very classy fielding third baseman, one ball and no strikes to him.
- 1:39:15Osteen sends him a breaking ball and picks him up on the corner for a call strike one-and-a-one.
- 1:39:24Three-hundred and nine feet down both lines and then falls out ultimately to 4-10.
- 1:39:30One ball and strikes it, Osteen breaking ball, out of the right out of play, he's got it right off the end of the bat,
- 1:39:36and Brooks is tapping the handle on the plate to make certain that he did not break it.
- 1:39:40A ball and two strikes.
- 1:39:42Baltimore leading one to nothing in the bottom of the 7th, one out and none on.
- 1:39:50Baltimore dug out on the third base side.
- 1:39:56A ball, two strikes.
- 1:40:00High for a ball, two-two.
- 1:40:03There are some managers who like very much to change their dugouts depending on whether they have more right-and-left-hand pitching,
- 1:40:10or the closer they can be to their right-hand pitching, they can observe much better what's going on.
- 1:40:16So you'll see some managers stay exactly on the side they want when they're at home to see their pitching.
- 1:40:22Two-two delivery is outside ball-free and Osteen is running the count for the Brooks Robinson.
- 1:40:34Baltimore one, Dodgers nothing, one out in the bottom of the 7th.
- 1:40:38End of the third game, Osteen to a 3-2 count to Brooks Robinson.
- 1:40:45Now ready to go from the rocking motion, a 3-2 pick, she wants him.
- 1:40:52Oh, Osteen issues his first free ticket, and the batter now is going to be Big Blue Mellow.
- 1:41:06We're in the bottom of the 7th, one out, one on.
- 1:41:10One run on three hits, the Dodgers no runs on five hits.
- 1:41:15Regan is loosening, and Bob Miller rejoins him in the Dodger bullpen in the right center field.
- 1:41:23A blue pal who is 4 for 9, 4 for 10 in the series, one to two here today,
- 1:41:29working with Brooks Robinson, the runner at first, held by Parker.
- 1:41:32Swings in the missed, he really hammered at it.
- 1:41:36Oh boy, he took a toucher that would have blown all the air out of any infield.
- 1:41:45Nothing in one, but he's sizable.
- 1:41:53Nothing in one to count, and the delivery hits foul back out of play.
- 1:41:58Blue pal of course has always had a weight problem and always will.
- 1:42:02Chuck Thompson, a Baltimore broadcaster, reported that some astute observer of the game of baseball said that only two things would ever lead to the downfall of blue pal, a knife and a fork.
- 1:42:19Nothing in two, Brooks Robinson, the runner at first, on the watch, ball hits sharply down to the receiver, Bad Hop, gets it on in time to win for one on the first base head double play, a fine execution of the 4-6 clear, and never weep there beside.
- 1:42:33No runs, no hits, no errors, and nobody left.
- 1:42:35At the end of seventh, the Baltimore Orioles won, although same to the Dodgers, nothing.
- 1:42:45Base for bowl of knives and football days, pretzel shopping and sirloin steaks, family reunions, friendly coifens, made for pleasure, that's Paul's cap.
- 1:42:55For four generations, a precious product of the brewer's heart.
- 1:42:59Good livin' time, good for the county, from year to year, a beer you wanna stay with, and a lot more stuff if you wish.
- 1:43:24Good winin' time, good winin' time, you have a new station, here's our beer and time.
- 1:43:34All right, great old our friend's room.
- 1:43:44We pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:43:47KCRA, AM&FM, Sacramento, your World Series station for the Valley. Here's a big free offer from Eto's Shell Service.
- 1:43:56Come in for shell lubrication and get a free six-point car inspection.
- 1:44:00Eto's Shell will check for leaks, check the brakes, check automatic transmission, the brake fluid level, and the fan belt.
- 1:44:08This six-point shell safety check is free with shell lubrication at Eto's Shell Service.
- 1:44:143211 Riverside Boulevard, Sacramento.
- 1:44:20They go to the eighth inning, Tommy Davis, who are back for Claude Osteen.
- 1:44:24Normally, in the course of a regular season game against a right-hander, the Dodgers use either West Covington or Jim Barbieri or switch-hitting Jim Gilliam.
- 1:44:32But failing by a run with time running out, they go to the right-hander, Tommy Davis, so he will make one of his infrequent appearances against a right-hand pitcher.
- 1:44:41And over the bound.
- 1:44:44Bob Osteen went to seven innings, very strong seven innings, surrendering three hits, but one of them unfortunately for him and the Dodgers left the ballpark.
- 1:44:52And so, Baltimore leads one of nothing.
- 1:44:56Tommy Davis, who has good power, will play him rather deep and left with Clefary, and they swing now Britch Robinson up deep and near the line.
- 1:45:07Bunker is low on a sinking pitch. Gives a little bit of a gap now in there.
- 1:45:12Stu Miller and Ed Watt are in the Baltimore Bro-Pan.
- 1:45:21One ball, no strikes.
- 1:45:24And it's ball two inside.
- 1:45:26There's no action now in the Dodger Bro-Pan, but that would only give rise to the fact that surely Regan is ready, having been warmed up for quite a while, and Miller just joined him briefly.
- 1:45:35So the suspicion would be that it will be Phil Regan coming on, going Baltimore back.
- 1:45:41Two balls, no strikes, the pitch.
- 1:45:43Gets right up the middle for a solid base hit.
- 1:45:46He went right through the middle, but Tommy turns around first and then comes back in.
- 1:45:51So that's the thick pitch.
- 1:45:55Surrendered by Bunker.
- 1:45:56And now, something that the Dodgers have been very adept in all year long in catching up, and they've been trying to catch up to Baltimore in this series.
- 1:46:04They're not afraid to bunt at any time and do all sorts of things.
- 1:46:08A little more of a world to standing, and he's one for three.
- 1:46:12And quite capable of doing most anything he's requested to do.
- 1:46:19There's an Axiom in baseball, never a bunch of tie game on the road, but then there are those that believe until you're tight, you're not able to do anything about winning it.
- 1:46:28He bunted right through that one for a strike.
- 1:46:35Billy Samworth of the Boston Braves was a great one in believing, bunt any time you can tie up a ball game in the late stages, whether you are at home or away.
- 1:46:46No balls, one strike.
- 1:46:51Now the pitch.
- 1:46:53Bunched this one beautifully down the line.
- 1:46:54Good Powell comes up with it. His throw will be to Johnson, and he almost threw that ball into the outfield.
- 1:47:01Made a fine play, Mr. Johnson did, and on the sacrifice, Tommy Davis moved into second.
- 1:47:07So the Dodgers again have the opportunity to tie up this contest.
- 1:47:10They have been knocking at the door against Baltimore since the fourth inning when Parker hit the brook rule double that bounced unfortunately for him up over the fence and out of play so that he could only get two rather than three.
- 1:47:23And Willie Davis is five ball the story.
- 1:47:26Then I walked to Fairley.
- 1:47:28In that inning they had a little threat going, another one in the fifth, another one in the sixth when Wills got as far as third.
- 1:47:34Now they have a runner at second in Tommy Davis and one out of Nevada is Wes Parker.
- 1:47:38Call that on strikes, doubled and down about the first.
- 1:47:41Parker takes it low, ball one.
- 1:47:48Baltimore leading one and nothing, but the Dodgers trying to come back and get even.
- 1:47:53They need to base it at some dimension or distance to get it in there.
- 1:47:59One ball, no strikes to Wes Parker.
- 1:48:04One look at second, Parker lifts the foul out of play to the left.
- 1:48:19Willie Davis, the on deck batter.
- 1:48:23One ball, one strike, one to nothing Baltimore.
- 1:48:29Tommy Davis now leading off second after he showed in behind him, there's a change up and Parker got out in front of it and then beat it foul into the dirt one and two.
- 1:48:42Parker, while that's the place we might notice, perhaps the slick of feeling first baseman as you'll see has what they would really call beautiful hands.
- 1:48:50Baseball players might not like that, the soft hands.
- 1:48:55And Rudy makes some remarkable plays, a ball and two strikes. Right now he'd like to make contact with that bat.
- 1:49:01Tommy Davis is running at second and one away.
- 1:49:04Bunker delivers. He's high with it around the middle of the cap, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:49:11Blue Powell playing a deep first base.
- 1:49:22Out high for the eighth and he's Tommy Davis as they think batter led off with a single through the middle.
- 1:49:28And Will sacrifice him up a notch.
- 1:49:32Now the 2-2 fix. Parker lifts a high pop in the shuttle left, Robinson going back and Apericio and Blefary.
- 1:49:38And who's going to get in there? It'll be Apericio getting the ball in between Blefary and Robinson.
- 1:49:44And the runner Tommy Davis having a hole. A near collision out there as Blefary and Robinson went back on it in Apericio.
- 1:49:52Some of them swirmed in between them both to haul it in.
- 1:49:57Prince Kelly time after time in this series, Baltimore defense have kept them very much in the bogie.
- 1:50:04I think too that Wes was a little over anxious. It occurred as if he did not have his pitch to hit.
- 1:50:10He was forced to go after that with two strikes. Remember he had struck out. And that was a great pitch by Bunker in the top spot.
- 1:50:18Now it's up to Willie Davis. And Willie flied to left and he was out robbed by a brilliant catch by Blefary.
- 1:50:24Flied to center twice. Tommy Davis the runner to second. Baltimore leading by a score of one to nothing.
- 1:50:30Two down in the top half of the eighth inning. Bunker surrendering six hits but still hanging in there.
- 1:50:37And he fouled it back. Strike one.
- 1:50:49Tommy deep in the batter's box. The story that he swings on the first pitch is practically axiomatic. He did first ball swing it.
- 1:50:57No balls, one strike. Short lead at second by Tommy Davis. Outfield over shifted and around to the right. Bunker works.
- 1:51:05Chopped it off the right side. Johnson goes over. Gets them all. Faced the foul.
- 1:51:16So, no runs. One hit. No errors and one left. And we go down to the bottom of the eighth inning one nothing Baltimore.
- 1:51:28And now let's hear from everybody favorite umpire Nick Brown.
- 1:51:59Six super stainless steel shaving edges are coiled and sealed inside a cartridge.
- 1:52:04Light them in a camera. Each head lasts about a week. Then triple lever and a fresh head locks in place.
- 1:52:11But the left tech batter is very sharp but very, very gentle. It's the lightest touch to shaving.
- 1:52:19Honk says Ham Hens. You sexy do mouse with a blintz of battered shave. Ham Hens always flies. Pray tell who's the better judge of the close one.
- 1:52:29And then I add ball pass.
- 1:52:36For the Dodgers to get maximum use out of a thin chitter, Tommy Doherty who batted nine stays in the game in left field.
- 1:52:42Lou Johnson moves over to right field. Ron Fairley will now play first base. So Phil Regan, the new pitcher, will hit in Wes Parker's spot.
- 1:52:54The Dodgers are face to face with the haunt of 1966, the shutout.
- 1:52:59This club that set a National League record of coming into the World Series shutout 17 times.
- 1:53:04And no National League club ever made the series flank that many times.
- 1:53:08They are face to face with that problem today as we go to the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:53:12For Wally Bunker who has completed only three games in 24 starts this year, he is now three outs away.
- 1:53:19And the difference in the game, the home run by Paul Blair.
- 1:53:24With Bunker, it's the first time he's gone more than seven innings since June. So Wally has turned in a tremendous effort in limiting the Dodgers to six innings.
- 1:53:33Phil Regan with gliders and thinker balls will be pitching to Baltimore on the bottom of the eighth. Let's go back to bottom.
- 1:53:41Another interesting aspect that Alan Roth and Jim Simpson will send over is the fact that only two World Series games have been won by a scorer of one nothing on home runs.
- 1:53:51Casey Singleton did it many years ago. And Tommy Henrich of the Yankees did it against the Dodgers not too long ago.
- 1:53:59So we'll see if the scorer is going to win one nothing. Regan sends in a fast one for a strike.
- 1:54:06Davey Johnson is over two, got it into a double play when that first base was picked to cover.
- 1:54:11The Dodgers only two runs in this series has been a home run by the Feaver and a run produced on a bases loaded block.
- 1:54:19Swinging in a miss by Davey Johnson.
- 1:54:25The Dodgers have bordered the Dodgers have on a breakthrough basis for about four innings now, but they just haven't been able to find the hole against Bunker.
- 1:54:32And some spectacular defense you play on the part of Baltimore.
- 1:54:36The Orem duke hit bounced on a comebacker to Regan. One hop, he's over to Ron Fairley and there's one away.
- 1:54:45Here's Blair now, who's first hit in the series of a home run.
- 1:54:54Turkey jerky motion up high for that in batter ball one from Regan.
- 1:55:14The fear of that pink power will go with McNeely tomorrow and that's Walter Austin will come back with Don Drysdale.
- 1:55:23One ball and a strike.
- 1:55:25It's slowly off the right side of the diamond charging the Feaver to throw it around Fairley and there are two away.
- 1:55:34What appears without question to be the solid break in this ball game.
- 1:55:38One against the Dodgers on a ball hit by Wes Parker in the fourth.
- 1:55:43A Brooksville double hitting the warning track on McCarrie bouncing over the right center screen.
- 1:55:49Holding him to second rather than allowing him to go on to third, which he could have easily made.
- 1:55:54And the fly ball by Willie Davis would have scored him with a run that would have at least kept them tied to this point in the game.
- 1:55:59Instead they faced the bleak problem of trying to score a run in the ninth.
- 1:56:03A big swing by Etchibarron, strike one. Etchibarron is 0-2 twice out and granted a short.
- 1:56:09The Turtles, the Dodgers no runs on six hits. The Orioles one run on three hits.
- 1:56:16Two down and the Baltimore eight.
- 1:56:19Phil Riggins in relief for both teams.
- 1:56:22Swing and a foul straight back. 0-2.
- 1:56:38No balls, two strikes.
- 1:56:41Riggins comes in with it but he's a little high at this time. Etchibarron taking inside of all the two strikes.
- 1:56:47Baltimore one, the Dodgers nothing. Bottom of the eighth, two down in the third game of the series.
- 1:56:59Then the big tall right hander comes in with one that is a line foul down the right field line and the count holding one and two.
- 1:57:1254,445.
- 1:57:17Largest crowd to witness a baseball game in Baltimore.
- 1:57:21A big swing and a miss, Riggins stuck him out.
- 1:57:23And so all the drama now is going on to get into the ninth.
- 1:57:27Three up and three down at the end of the eighth inning to play.
- 1:57:30Baltimore one, the Los Angeles Dodgers nothing.
- 1:57:35And now a word from someone in the stadium.
- 1:57:38I'm in a tunnel under the stadium and meet me as a tall stranger man in a black suit with a guy showing hate.
- 1:57:44Sir, are you an umpire?
- 1:57:45That's close enough, my dear.
- 1:57:47Why aren't you up on the field?
- 1:57:48I never go to day games. Don't like games.
- 1:57:51I see. Do you live around here?
- 1:57:53I live in Grand
- 1:57:57See over there?
- 1:57:58It's a 60,000 barge Coronet 500.
- 1:58:01Saying that you're an unusual color.
- 1:58:03It's special for me. It's called blood red.
- 1:58:06I never heard of that. Tell me, how do you like the new Coronet 500?
- 1:58:10It's perfect. I like the bucket seats, the luxurious carpeting, the normal vinyl interior.
- 1:58:16So easy to keep clean, especially in my business.
- 1:58:19It's also fascinating to know those power windows work.
- 1:58:23I seriously like that.
- 1:58:25And that big, blue engine gives me plenty of power for driving down those main arteries.
- 1:58:30If you know what I mean.
- 1:58:32Yes. Well, I think we better switch back to the game.
- 1:58:40As we go to the ninth inning, Baltimore one, the Dodgers nothing.
- 1:58:43A reminder, the fourth game of the Wales series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
- 1:58:46Warm up time at 1 45 Eastern Daylight Time.
- 1:58:50Baltimore making a defensive change.
- 1:58:52Russ Snyder is now in left field for Kurt Breffery.
- 1:58:55And we go to the ninth inning, Baltimore one.
- 1:58:58Los Angeles nothing and here's five.
- 1:59:01Ron Fairley now playing first base will be the leadoff batter for the Dodgers.
- 1:59:06Who are trailing nothing to one.
- 1:59:09Have not scored against Baltimore pitching in 23 and a third inning.
- 1:59:18As bunker attempts to make his one nothing lead on the home run by Paul Blair.
- 1:59:24Hold up while they bunker to the line that the pitch and he gets it to the outside corner.
- 1:59:29They call.
- 1:59:30He had that one running right away from the left hand batter.
- 1:59:32Good pass ball was moving.
- 1:59:44There is a delivery that is in there for a shot going through.
- 1:59:50Dodgers must be somewhat concerned about the youthful pitching.
- 1:59:55Palmer, who is yet to be 21.
- 1:59:59Cutting him out six nothing and now bunker who is just 21 years of age.
- 2:00:04Leading one and up.
- 2:00:07The ball distracts the Fairley.
- 2:00:10Now Ron steps out a little bit.
- 2:00:15Bunker arches his back easing some of the tension.
- 2:00:18Luke Powell playing deep first near the line.
- 2:00:21The 0-2 delivery into the dirt ball one and two.
- 2:00:30Then reported to you earlier this is the first time bunkers work more than seven innings since June the 25th.
- 2:00:36A ball and two strikes.
- 2:00:38The wind up by the right hander and in comes the pitch and it's finally a strike three.
- 2:00:52That's six strikeouts and in the first game McNally had one, Krabowski 11.
- 2:00:58Palmer had six at his nine and now Bunker gets it.
- 2:01:02So 24 strikeouts have been recorded against the Dodgers by Krabowski, Palmer and Bunker basically.
- 2:01:09Here's Lefebvre over three.
- 2:01:11One to nothing with one out in the top of the ninth.
- 2:01:14Baltimore leading.
- 2:01:15There's a hard wrap down towards second base.
- 2:01:18Down to one hander tomorrow.
- 2:01:19Two away.
- 2:01:28In this first World Series setting, Baltimore fans as you can imagine are going wild.
- 2:01:34Witnessing thus far a tremendous pitching duel.
- 2:01:41We're not able to find a hole, find a vacuum and get it out of here.
- 2:01:47And now you can bet that Lou Johnson will be going with all he has.
- 2:01:52He's been reduced to the big swing that he can make it.
- 2:01:59Catch a bear and have to say something to Bunker.
- 2:02:04Russ Schneider in left, Blair in center, Frank Robinson in the right fielder.
- 2:02:08They've all swung around a little bit.
- 2:02:11Brooks Robinson now guards the line and that ratio comes over in the hole at short.
- 2:02:15Lou Johnson, first pitch from Bunker, swings in the foul to the right out of play.
- 2:02:21Now Johnson has had two hits in forward bats, a broken back double play ball in the second when he was jammed nicely by Bunker,
- 2:02:28a looping single to left in the fifth, and he ran one up the middle in the seventh.
- 2:02:34Two down in the top of the ninth and game three.
- 2:02:36The Dodgers literally their backs to the wall.
- 2:02:40No balls, one strike six.
- 2:02:42Swing and a strike two, but second.
- 2:02:52All the ball won, the Dodgers nothing.
- 2:02:54Two down, none on.
- 2:02:56The batter, Lou Johnson, and in the hole nothing and two.
- 2:03:03Bunker on the 0-2 delivery, comes in with it.
- 2:03:05There's a ball bounced down to a short.
- 2:03:07That ratio has it, the strong throw they have.
- 2:03:35And so the final score, all the more one, for the thank yous, Dodgers nothing.
- 2:03:41And we'll be back in a moment with some of the highlights of today's winning game.
- 2:03:45A great new cigarette is born, a new filter cigarette whose very name stands for flavor,
- 2:04:07new Camel Filters. This is the one born rich, rich in taste with a big Camel head start on flavor.
- 2:04:17Now that great Camel heritage of real taste comes to you in a great new filter cigarette.
- 2:04:23No other can compare in flavor and quality the new Camel Filters.
- 2:04:29This is the one you'll want to try.
- 2:04:32The Camel Filters, the one born rich, rich.
- 2:04:46The turtles on the ball game in the first real world series ball game were pitching was certainly the highlight.
- 2:04:52For Baltimore, one run, only three hits.
- 2:04:55And for the Dodgers, no runs, six hits and no errors.
- 2:04:58For the Dodgers, shut out again, actually the 18th time this year, 17 in regular play,
- 2:05:05thoroughly blanked by Jim Palmer and now shut out again today by the right-hander who really had it, Wally Bunker.
- 2:05:13And of course in passing certainly, since it was only that one home run, the only run on the board,
- 2:05:18a tremendous pitching performance by Claude Osteen.
- 2:05:21Osteen allowed only the three hits, but of course it will be lost in the shuffle,
- 2:05:26The ball of Baltimore in the baseball world, coasts, Wally Bunker and the Baltimore Orioles.
- 2:05:31The time of the game, an hour and 55 minutes.
- 2:05:34For the Dodgers, if there was a play, it was their only look at the ball game.
- 2:05:38You go back to the fourth inning with one out.
- 2:05:40Barker's double, which bounced over the fence and would easily have been a triple for the fleet-footed first baseman.
- 2:05:46Not sour grapes, we pointed out for you.
- 2:05:48If you accept it, fine. If you wish to discard it, you can do that too.
- 2:05:52But that of course would be the only big break in the ball game.
- 2:05:56You know, box seats for today's game are $12, and they're worth it because there's nothing like the excitement of a World Series.
- 2:06:02But you know thousands of folks have seen today's game for less than 50 cents.
- 2:06:06Those are the people with Motorola color television.
- 2:06:09You see, Motorola color television costs as little as 15 cents a viewing hour.
- 2:06:13That's less than 50 cents a game based on the price of a table model on three-year contracts.
- 2:06:19And you get the big rectangular picture pioneered by Motorola.
- 2:06:23Plus, solid state reliability of 17 critical points.
- 2:06:27The top football games coming up will be telecast in color.
- 2:06:30And there'll be more than 73 hours a week of top nighttime TV in color too.
- 2:06:35So don't miss it. See your Motorola dealer and discover how you can enjoy color TV for as little as 15 cents a viewing hour with Motorola.
- 2:06:43Now introducing the new fights of color television.
- 2:06:47There were some great defensive plays in the ball game today.
- 2:06:50Kurt Bleffley made it dandy.
- 2:06:51Both second basemen as middlemen in double plays were hard pressed and came up with it.
- 2:06:55Jimmy LeFevre and Dave Johnson.
- 2:06:57There was another great play by shortstop Luis Aparicio and the leaping one-hand catch of a line drive by Wes Parkers.
- 2:07:03But when it all settled down, if Osteen and the Dodgers had pitched a shutout, the best they would then have had would have been even.
- 2:07:10For the Baltimore Orioles, billed as a power club.
- 2:07:13Instead, they have really done it on overpowering pitching.
- 2:07:16They have now shut out the Dodgers in 24 consecutive innings.
- 2:07:20And for Jim Bunnings, his first shutout since June the 5th of 1965.
- 2:07:25When oddly enough, he shut out a California ball club, the Angels, at Dodger Stadium.
- 2:07:31For Wally Bunker, his first complete game since June the 10th at Boston.
- 2:07:35He won 9-2.
- 2:07:37And then Bunker failed to complete his last 13 consecutive starts.
- 2:07:41But the youngster had it today, went all the way.
- 2:07:44And from the moment he struck out Maury Wills, followed by Wes Parker, he was under a full head of steam all the way.
- 2:07:51The closest to a threat in the fourth, the Dodgers had two on with two out.
- 2:07:55And Jimmy LaFevre, the club's leading home run and RBI man, struck out.
- 2:07:59They also had Wills at first base in the sixth inning.
- 2:08:02He was going as Parker rolled out to first.
- 2:08:04Maury got as far as third base, but stayed there as fairly on a half swing, tapped back to the box.
- 2:08:10And the Dodgers then won, fleeting flurry in the eighth inning when Tommy Davis single was sacrificed to second,
- 2:08:16but stayed there as Parker and Wally Davis popped up and grounded out.
- 2:08:21So, hail to Baltimore as they win it three in a row.
- 2:08:24And it's up to the Dodgers and Baltimore now for the fourth and final game tomorrow.
- 2:08:28As a guest, in fact it's not most of the guests, it just has to be Don Drysdale.
- 2:08:32We doubt very much that Kovacs could possibly come back so soon.
- 2:08:35That decision will be left up to the quiet man from Darktown, Walter Olson.
- 2:08:39Now to wrap it up, here's Bob.
- 2:08:41Well, you know, a lot of people are spoiled when they see the tremendous pitching that has been unfolded by this young Baltimore staff.
- 2:08:4824 Dodgers striking out, 20-year-old pitcher winning one, a 21-year-old today, and 22-year-old youngsters.
- 2:08:54The youngest man in the world series, other than those two pitchers, hitting the home run, ultimately won it.
- 2:08:59So, speaking of being spoiled, I'd like to ask you, have you ever been spoiled?
- 2:09:03And I mean really spoiled.
- 2:09:05By something that's so good you just can't go back to the way things were before?
- 2:09:09Well, if you have, you know what a great feeling it is.
- 2:09:12But if you haven't, you're going to get a chance to find out what it's like.
- 2:09:15Well, say as early as tomorrow morning.
- 2:09:17You know how? By shaving with a Gillette Super Stainless blade, also known as the Spoiler.
- 2:09:23The Spoiler isn't just a new razor blade, it's a whole new standard of shaving.
- 2:09:28The Gillette Super Stainless has a miracle plastic coating baked onto the edge.
- 2:09:32It's a blade invented and patented by Gillette.
- 2:09:34When you shave with this new blade, you can actually feel how much less pull there is.
- 2:09:39And that's when you'll become spoiled.
- 2:09:41So completely spoiled that you'll never go back to your old way of shaving.
- 2:09:45No matter how much you liked it before, you're going to be spoiled.
- 2:09:49So after the game, why don't you go out and get yourself a spoiler?
- 2:09:52The Gillette Super Stainless blade.
- 2:09:54You might as well start getting spoiled right away.
