- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, my name is Andrea, but most people call me Andy.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I'm an aera guitarist, which means I play guitar while
- 0:05Speaker 2: swinging around on an upside down. And I've got a
- 0:08Speaker 2: show coming up in Brisbane. Actually this Saturday, the fifth
- 0:11Speaker 2: of July. We're going to be shredding at the Arkana
- 0:13Speaker 2: Empress Theater in Maruka.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Doors open at seven pm.
- 0:16Speaker 2: You can grab your tickets at Andreaguitar dot com and
- 0:18Speaker 2: I hope to see a couple of you guys at
- 0:20Speaker 2: the show. It's going to be such an epic night.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I can't wait for people in Brisbane to see.
- 0:24Speaker 3: This fantastic Andrea, thanks for joining us tonight.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Thanks so much for having me.
- 0:30Speaker 3: I'm so excited right pleasure.
- 0:32Speaker 4: So, just to reiterate what you said, you are bringing
- 0:34Speaker 4: your Andrea's Aerial Guitar show to Brisbane this weekend for
- 0:37Speaker 4: a one off show on Saturday, July the fifth at
- 0:39Speaker 4: RK and Empressimerica.
- 0:41Speaker 3: So, firstly, have you played Brisbane before?
- 0:44Speaker 2: I haven't played at the Empress before. This is my
- 0:47Speaker 2: first time, but i know that it is the venue
- 0:50Speaker 2: for aeriels and rock shows, so I'm so super keen
- 0:54Speaker 2: to check it out. We've done the show in Sydney,
- 0:56Speaker 2: Woollongong and Melbourne and this is our first time taking
- 0:59Speaker 2: the show to Brisbane, so it's going to be pretty
- 1:01Speaker 2: epic night.
- 1:02Speaker 3: I think we'll be.
- 1:03Speaker 4: I don't have to look at some of the photos
- 1:04Speaker 4: as the place earlier on and I couldn't. All I
- 1:06Speaker 4: could see was open sky. I couldn't see anyway where
- 1:08Speaker 4: you're going to hook yourself to be aerial, So hopefully
- 1:11Speaker 4: there is something there.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Oh absolutely, yeah, it wouldn't be visible at.
- 1:18Speaker 2: But yeah, we've got some points there that we're going
- 1:20Speaker 2: to be setting up early in the morning so that
- 1:21Speaker 2: we can rock from the ceiling.
- 1:23Speaker 1: For you guys, I know the name.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Andrea's are of Guitar Show is pretty self explanatory, but
- 1:29Speaker 4: for the benefit of those who thinks that sound too
- 1:30Speaker 4: good to be true, run us say exactly what it is.
- 1:34Speaker 2: So the way that I've been describing the show to
- 1:36Speaker 2: people is two ways. Either I say to them, look,
- 1:40Speaker 2: think of it as like going to see like a
- 1:42Speaker 2: guitarist like Joe CROWNI or Steve I or Nita Strauss.
- 1:47Speaker 2: But imagine that during past of the show, instead of
- 1:49Speaker 2: just staying on the ground.
- 1:50Speaker 1: The whole time, they will climb up a rope and
- 1:53Speaker 1: do some guitar solos in midair. All The other way
- 1:56Speaker 1: that I.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Describe it to people is think about a Pink concert,
- 1:59Speaker 2: and you know how it is the aerial tricks.
- 2:01Speaker 1: In hershel but imagine if Pink was a heavy metal guitarist.
- 2:06Speaker 1: So they're the two ways that I usually describe it
- 2:08Speaker 1: to people. But the best way to.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Describe it is, honestly, for you guys, just see the
- 2:12Speaker 2: show for yourself. It is hard to really explain the
- 2:15Speaker 2: magnitude of the whole show in words, but it really
- 2:19Speaker 2: is a visual experience.
- 2:21Speaker 3: It sounds dangerous, I like, do you have the safety
- 2:22Speaker 3: debt or anything.
- 2:25Speaker 1: There's no safety in that, absolutely not.
- 2:27Speaker 2: But for people that are worried about safety, I have
- 2:29Speaker 2: been training in aeral arts for over ten years and
- 2:33Speaker 2: I'm a bit of a scay cat myself when it
- 2:35Speaker 2: comes to heights, So I can assure you that anything
- 2:37Speaker 2: I do in the show.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I am very comfortable with.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Like I'm not going to go up there and try
- 2:43Speaker 2: a trick that I'm like fifty percent on. There's no
- 2:46Speaker 2: way that a trick like that would be getting put
- 2:48Speaker 2: into the show.
- 2:48Speaker 1: So I know it looks.
- 2:50Speaker 2: It can look pretty daunting, like I have had people
- 2:52Speaker 2: come up to me and say that they were holding
- 2:54Speaker 2: the breath of the entire show. But I can assure
- 2:56Speaker 2: you that everything that I'm doing I feel completely safe in.
- 3:00Speaker 4: I suppose one of the hardest parts to be making
- 3:02Speaker 4: sure that the neck of the guitar dos to get
- 3:03Speaker 4: wrapped up in the rope while you playing, is that
- 3:06Speaker 4: initie exactly?
- 3:08Speaker 2: Yeah, making sure that the guitar doesn't get wrapped up
- 3:10Speaker 2: in the rope, making sure my costume, my hair, even
- 3:13Speaker 2: have my eyelashes get.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Pulled by the rope. I've had the rope blacken me
- 3:15Speaker 1: in the face.
- 3:16Speaker 2: There's a lot of definitely a lot of that sort
- 3:19Speaker 2: of stuff going on, and a lot of I guess
- 3:21Speaker 2: like hurdles that we've had to overcome with putting this
- 3:23Speaker 2: show together.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And it has been really a really long process being
- 3:27Speaker 1: able to tie.
- 3:29Speaker 2: All the elements of doing aerial and guitar and creating
- 3:32Speaker 2: this show. So yeah, definitely, I completely understand your concern
- 3:36Speaker 2: about the rope and the guitar.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Did you playing your own own song with your own
- 3:41Speaker 4: material or do you do covers the song that people know?
- 3:44Speaker 3: I love?
- 3:45Speaker 2: It is a mix of originals and covers, So there's
- 3:48Speaker 2: going to be some covers from some amazing bands that
- 3:51Speaker 2: you guys would know, like I made a Metallica. Even
- 3:54Speaker 2: some Australian rock bands in there are mixed in with
- 3:57Speaker 2: the original tracks, so it's going to be something for everyone.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Really, is it just you playing guitar or is there
- 4:04Speaker 4: a full band that stays on the ground and doesn't
- 4:06Speaker 4: go the air with you.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I've got a full band show for this as well
- 4:11Speaker 2: as a second aera list.
- 4:12Speaker 1: So it's yeah, it's a full production. I haven't been
- 4:15Speaker 1: able to convince the band to climb the rope with me,
- 4:18Speaker 1: but I think that would be what can progress for
- 4:21Speaker 1: the next show.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Either that or try and convince the drummer from Motley
- 4:24Speaker 2: Crue or Parkway Drive to get one of their contraptions
- 4:27Speaker 2: in the show. Could you imagine have the drums lifted
- 4:29Speaker 2: over the stage or Parkway Drives like rotating wheel of
- 4:33Speaker 2: dead drum thing that they've got going on there, But yeah,
- 4:36Speaker 2: I think that would be for future shows.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Then do you sing as well or have you got
- 4:40Speaker 3: a separate vocalist?
- 4:41Speaker 2: So it's all instrumental, So it's going to be all instrumental, Yeah,
- 4:46Speaker 2: definitely all instrumental, classic.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Sort of metal rock, that sort of stuff.
- 4:50Speaker 2: But yeah, it's you really have to kind of come
- 4:54Speaker 2: and see it or hear it to hear how we
- 4:57Speaker 2: put the compilations together, because I remember one of the
- 4:59Speaker 2: songs we start it, and someone was saying to me
- 5:01Speaker 2: after the show, he was like, I was wondering who
- 5:03Speaker 2: was going to sing that song?
- 5:04Speaker 1: But then when you see how we do it, you absolutely.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Will, you would.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 5:13Speaker 3: So what what came first for you, the guitar or
- 5:16Speaker 3: the aerobatics?
- 5:18Speaker 1: It was guitar.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I've been playing guitar since I was a young kid,
- 5:22Speaker 2: got more serious about it in high school, and then
- 5:24Speaker 2: even more serious about it after that, And it wasn't
- 5:27Speaker 2: ntil much later that I actually stumbled across aeral Arts
- 5:30Speaker 2: And I remember going to my first ever aeral arts class.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I didn't even really know what it was.
- 5:36Speaker 2: And after my first class, I had already decided that
- 5:39Speaker 2: I wanted to do that with a guitar. I did
- 5:42Speaker 2: not know how I was going to do it, or
- 5:43Speaker 2: where I was going to do it, or even what
- 5:46Speaker 2: I would be capable of doing, but I already knew
- 5:48Speaker 2: from that moment that that was what I wanted to do,
- 5:50Speaker 2: and from then I've literally.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Just dedicated like most of my life to it, really.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Just working on it, trying to come up with tricks
- 5:58Speaker 2: that worked with the guitar and putting this whole show together.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Are you the only person in the world doing something
- 6:06Speaker 4: like this? I couldn't count imagine there'd be too many.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Not that I could find, because I definitely did do
- 6:12Speaker 2: a long, hard search. I found like a couple of
- 6:15Speaker 2: guitarists that did sort of the suspension thing where they're
- 6:17Speaker 2: kind of like suspended by some kind of a harness
- 6:20Speaker 2: or something that they get swung around in kind of
- 6:23Speaker 2: similar to the harness contraption that Pink has.
- 6:25Speaker 1: In her show. And there's another guitarist that I connected
- 6:29Speaker 1: with over in the.
- 6:30Speaker 2: US that she does like guitar and ariel hoops. So
- 6:35Speaker 2: I felt it's pretty cool, and so far they're the
- 6:38Speaker 2: only people that I've found.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I found a lot of aerial.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Violinists though, so a little bit of a thing, but
- 6:43Speaker 2: if anyone's into violin or aerial violin, that seems to
- 6:47Speaker 2: be a really popular like sort of music and aerial combinations,
- 6:51Speaker 2: So I.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Thought that was pretty interesting.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Yeah, literally all these violentists, like classical highly skilled violinists.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It like playing violin whilst doing aeriel.
- 7:02Speaker 3: That's amazing. But what actually what made you look it
- 7:06Speaker 3: up there.
- 7:07Speaker 4: And go on, yeah, I reckon I could do that
- 7:09Speaker 4: and play the guitar at the same time.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Like, what was the thought process?
- 7:13Speaker 2: I think I just thought, like because obviously I knew
- 7:16Speaker 2: already that Pink did that sort of thing in her show.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And like I said, when I went to this first
- 7:21Speaker 1: aerial class.
- 7:22Speaker 2: I didn't know what to expect. So when I went
- 7:24Speaker 2: in and I saw what it was, the first thing
- 7:27Speaker 2: I thought of was Pink. But obviously I'm not a singer,
- 7:30Speaker 2: so I thought, I just have to do this with
- 7:32Speaker 2: a guitar. I played piano as well, but I thought,
- 7:35Speaker 2: you know, I think guitar is not too heavy to
- 7:38Speaker 2: get a piano exactly, but maybe maybe.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I could work on it for the future.
- 7:46Speaker 4: So which one is hard a foiler? Which one you
- 7:48Speaker 4: have to work out more everybody's side of it or
- 7:50Speaker 4: the plan or doing it together?
- 7:54Speaker 2: Doing it together definitely has been a bit of a challenge.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I used to practice this by hanging off the edge
- 8:00Speaker 2: of my bed when I was still living with my parents.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Just to practice like sensation of having the guitar but
- 8:07Speaker 2: being played.
- 8:08Speaker 1: While you're upside down.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Because one thing that I never even considered, even without
- 8:12Speaker 2: the feats of doing the aerial stuff, is just the
- 8:14Speaker 2: fact that when you're normally you're playing guitar, like gravity
- 8:17Speaker 2: is holding your arms down.
- 8:18Speaker 1: When you're inverted, you have to hold your.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Arms up, which just doesn't sound like okay, like that
- 8:25Speaker 2: doesn't sound like a hard thing, but after a while,
- 8:27Speaker 2: I feel like the blood flow or just the muscular
- 8:31Speaker 2: use of just having to actually physically hold them up
- 8:34Speaker 2: there and then play like, I found that my arms
- 8:37Speaker 2: would get so tired so easily compared to when I'm
- 8:40Speaker 2: just playing upright.
- 8:41Speaker 1: So that was an interesting thing that I thought.
- 8:43Speaker 2: I'd never really thought of that, like, not even doing
- 8:45Speaker 2: any of the climbing, and my arm's getting so tired
- 8:47Speaker 2: just because I have to hold them up now they're
- 8:49Speaker 2: not just like hanging by my side.
- 8:51Speaker 4: It makes sense when you say, but it's not the
- 8:53Speaker 4: sort of thing you think about, but it makes sense.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Like I thought about the fact that obviously, like the
- 9:01Speaker 2: climbing and the tricks and all like all that, yes,
- 9:03Speaker 2: that's going to be hard, but literally just physically just
- 9:06Speaker 2: hanging there with your arms up. Yeah, ended up something
- 9:09Speaker 2: that I had to train as well.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Wow.
- 9:11Speaker 4: So if people have been listening and they're still a
- 9:13Speaker 4: little bit like, oh yeah, I'm not sure that's going
- 9:15Speaker 4: to look like is.
- 9:16Speaker 3: There is it video? If you got your own website
- 9:18Speaker 3: or something where people don't check it.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Out, Yeah, I've got plenty of videos all over my
- 9:23Speaker 2: social media pages and on my website, on my website
- 9:26Speaker 2: as well, so you can definitely check it out for
- 9:28Speaker 2: people that want to get a bit of an idea
- 9:30Speaker 2: of what the show involves before they see it.
- 9:33Speaker 3: And what's your website address?
- 9:36Speaker 2: So the website, you can visit my website just Andrea
- 9:39Speaker 2: Guitar dot com. Or I'm on social media so like Facebook, Instagram,
- 9:44Speaker 2: all those sorts of things fantastical.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Sounds like a great night of entertainment to me. So,
- 9:49Speaker 4: people of Brisbane, is your chance that day, July the fifth,
- 9:52Speaker 4: Arcander and Prostita in Marika. So we'll probably try and
- 9:56Speaker 4: pop down and have a look anyway. But thanks for
- 9:58Speaker 4: joining us, Thank
- 10:00Speaker 1: Thanks so much for having us
