Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Conquering Darkness With AARON TUCK From LUMEN AD MORTEM
Transcript
- 0:00So my name's Aaron. I'm from Luminade Mortem, where a black metal band
- 0:04based in South Australia. The band's been around. The idea started in about
- 0:10twenty eighteen where myself and the singer Greg decided to write some music. There
- 0:16was a lot more basic than what we've written before and just sort of go
- 0:19back to the roots of all the music that we love from the nineties.
- 0:23Really saw the Norwegian black metal and then some American stuff and you know,
- 0:29all the stuff that really influenced does. Yeah, so we just started.
- 0:37I wrote all the demos myself and continue to write the music myself, all
- 0:43the guitars, keyboards and bass and everything, and then we recorded our debut
- 0:51album at the end of the COVID lockdowns, I guess, so twenty twenty.
- 0:57We got Matt gets involved because he lives in Adelaide now and yeah,
- 1:03we've sort of been playing that album live whenever we can with our full lineup,
- 1:07which includes a lot of guys, well sorry, not a lot of
- 1:11guys. Includes four other guys because I'm writing like the guitars and bass and
- 1:17keys and then the drummer. So yeah, so we've got a full live
- 1:23lineup We've done a few shows like Heavy Essay and New Dead first here and
- 1:29we've played over in Melbourne. But yeah, we're going to do Necrosonic up
- 1:34in Brisbane in August. We're playing at the Crowned Anchor and Adelaide before that
- 1:38with Bullet Belt, who are also playing Necrosonic. Yeah, so luminad Mortem's
- 1:44it started off as a studio project, but basically it's become a live project
- 1:48as well. I'm still working on the music primarily but primarily by myself,
- 1:53so writing everything for the second album currently and we hope to go into the
- 2:01studio and record that at the end of this year. So fantastic Aaron,
- 2:06thanks for joining us, sid I rather jeers, thank you for having me
- 2:10pleasure. So Leumit and Moreen will be just one of thirty metal bands playing
- 2:15at the inaugural Necrosonic Festival, to be held at the Mansfield Tabing in Brisbane
- 2:19on August at thirty first. Must be a bit of an honor braw to
- 2:22be part of something special like that, like it's a it's a good lighte
- 2:24up. Yeah. Yeah, and there's a few bands that I hadn't actually
- 2:29heard before and when I checked them out. They blew me away, so
- 2:31like one of them is Spire, really looking forward to seeing them, and
- 2:37you know, of course cryptsy Croptic Misery. There's just an awesome lineup.
- 2:43So Kent's done a really good job. Yeah, I don't think he's focused
- 2:46a little bit. This year too, was on he was trying to get
- 2:49quite a few bands that hadn't played for a while or that had disbanded,
- 2:52and he's got quite a few. Like I know, Crypt are going to
- 2:54be playing a one off, last ever career spanning show. There's there was
- 3:00another band there too. I think it was a Mortality that hasn't played for
- 3:02a while. Yeah, I think so. Yeah, he's got quite a
- 3:06few there that have sort of come back from the dead so to speak to
- 3:08the helping party, it's good. Yeah, it's going to be awesome.
- 3:13Definitely give our next workout watching all the other bands, and I feel that
- 3:21the week after I Reckon, it'll be for a couple of weeks after.
- 3:27I think it's just great though, to see a new metal festival start up
- 3:30in Australia, like we haven't really had anything fully dedicated to heavy music since
- 3:34the days of over Cranked and Metal for the Brain. Yeah, yeah,
- 3:38absolutely, We've got down in the Essay. We've got Heavy Essay and New
- 3:45Dead and Froth and Fury that are pretty awesome down here, and we've played
- 3:49New Dead, so that's pretty good. But yeah, I think I think
- 3:53it's starting to really come back, and maybe it's you know, the whole
- 3:57COVID thing kicked everyone in the guts and then you know, the amount of
- 4:01the amount of shows is phenomenal. You know, I'm seeing bands I haven't
- 4:04seen in ages coming to Australia and you know, there's almost too many gigs,
- 4:10so it's good for bands like us. You know, you either play
- 4:14to a handful of people at a really small bar or you jump on one
- 4:16of these festivals, and you know, it's just such an awesome opportunity for
- 4:21us to be able to come up there and not play like the smallest dive
- 4:25bar and actually play an awesome stage and an awesome festival. So have you
- 4:30played at the bands you tap it before? No, I haven't no great
- 4:33value bro like the Massive probably one of the biggest stages I've seen for a
- 4:36pub, huge, and it's just like it's probably I think you get about
- 4:41eight hundred people in there in the room. It's like, but it's just
- 4:44just a really really good value, great sound, great production. Yeah,
- 4:46yeah, you go enjoy it well. And then so for the benefit of
- 4:51people who might not have heard or seen, I've believe it had more than
- 4:55before Mane, Like, what can we expect from your set? Ah,
- 5:00Well, I mean we're playing I guess a bit sort of mid paced blake
- 5:05metal, but you know, with a lot of blast beats, and a
- 5:09lot of our music has like orchestral sections, and then we've got a bit
- 5:15of a I'm not sure if we'll have it at Necrosonic, but we've got
- 5:20like a projection show we put behind us. But if we don't have the
- 5:25projections, then we'll probably just end up, you know, having something really
- 5:29dark and lots of fog and lots of atmosphere. But yeah, our singer
- 5:34Greg's as tall. People call him the praying Mantis, and he likes to
- 5:40scream in people's faces. He's got a lot a lot of character. Yeah,
- 5:45So I don't know, we just get up there and play the tunes
- 5:47as best we can and try and create an atmosphere of dark, grim evil.
- 5:59You sort of had this a little bit of the intro Robot Bluemit and
- 6:01Mortim is essentially yourself and vocalist Greg and you started the band back around twenty
- 6:05nineteen after previously playing together in Delusion, asked Volders, so, what was
- 6:11your early vision for this band and how's it changed since? Well, I
- 6:15guess, like a lot of musos when we were younger, we over complicated
- 6:23things. So we made a bit of you know, in Deligent my other
- 6:26death metal bandsas I can, sort of became a bit of a riff salad,
- 6:31and I really wanted to take things back to basics and try and get
- 6:35back to you know, it sounds really cheesy, but just the emotion behind
- 6:40the music. So there's a lot a lot of it's inspired by, like
- 6:44movie soundtracks and a bit of classical music, I guess, without being without
- 6:50being what's the term they use for black metal with heaps keyboards. Yeah,
- 7:00without being that without being that pompous, you know, orchestral stuff. I
- 7:05really wanted to get. You know, I'm really influenced by like Hans Zimmer,
- 7:10Howard Shaw and you know, the really dark soundtracks, really dark orchestral
- 7:17classical music. So I wanted to have that as sort of the basis and
- 7:21not make it like all about guitar solos and all about Yeah, we we
- 7:28really had a really similar we've we've always had a pretty similar musical taste.
- 7:31So when I said to him, do you want to do something that's more
- 7:35this sort of style, he was like right on board. And we've been,
- 7:40you know, constantly talking about what we're going to do and trying to
- 7:44keep egos out of it and keep you know, try and create something that
- 7:46we both really like and discuss it and make sure it's heading in the in
- 7:51the right direction. Yeah. Right, You're released your debut EP, Upon
- 7:57the Edge of Darkness in early twenty twenty three, put out the single and
- 8:01music video for within the Smoke from that EP. So just say, someone's
- 8:05never heard of you guys before, Is that a good song from the check
- 8:07out as an introduction? Yeah? I think absolutely. I mean it's it's
- 8:11probably one of the most straight up metal four four ten time signature metal tracks
- 8:20on the album. It's not it's probably one of the mid sides, mid
- 8:24length songs, but yeah, it's got all the hallmarks of a luminad modern
- 8:31song. Yeah, the whole album it sort of has the same vibe,
- 8:37but it's got different elements coming in and out, like orchestral sections and other
- 8:41songs that might be a bit longer with more lead guitar sections. But yeah,
- 8:46we thought within the Smoke really hits hard from get go, glass beats,
- 8:52evil riffs. Yeah, so it's that's why we chose it as the
- 8:58film clip track because, yeah, it's probably one of the most straight metal
- 9:03tracks we've done. Yeah, you mentioned before that you've started writing the follow
- 9:07up with a view to hit in the studio towards the end of this year.
- 9:09So what sort of direction musically is that going to take? Is it
- 9:11going to be similar to the Dabu app or are you sort of branching out
- 9:16a bit? Yeah, I mean I've got some things on there, like
- 9:20a little bit of acoustic guitar, not heaps. We didn't have any of
- 9:22that on the first album. I've sort of tried to create even bigger orchestral
- 9:33intros for a couple of songs. Yeah, so I'm not deviating too far
- 9:39from it, but just trying to, I guess take it to the next
- 9:43level. You know, you're always trying to write better music and also like
- 9:48editing a bit more so. I guess a couple of songs off the first
- 9:52album I thought maybe a little bit too long, or this bit went a
- 9:56little bit too long, and just trying to trying to figure out what's the
- 10:00perfect length for a song, or what's the perfect length for a section to
- 10:03go on for before it gets too much and you get bored of it yourself.
- 10:07So yeah, a little bit more editing rather than just sitting down writing
- 10:11songs and going that's good. That's the thing. It's a little bit more
- 10:16editing. I know Greg's he's working on vocal demos currently. He's sent me
- 10:22through a couple he's branching off in different vocal directions and with more of a
- 10:28lyrical theme that ties the whole album together. But yeah, it's of the
- 10:35same vein. We're not completely changing the sound of the band at all all
- 10:41right eron what thanks for your toil that I've made been the pleasure speaking with
- 10:43you moretem is that Necrosotic advanced for taving in Brisbane on August at thirty first.
