- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome the Money in Wealth with John O'Bryant, a production
- 0:03Speaker 1: of The Black Effect Podcast Network and iHeartRadio. Hey, hey,
- 0:15Speaker 1: John O'Brien, I'm here, my brother from another mother, my
- 0:17Speaker 1: friend Toby looking. Now you know Toby from Shopify. He's
- 0:22Speaker 1: a founder and he's done an incredible job with that company.
- 0:25Speaker 1: It's amazing, and we're honing to be a partner with
- 0:28Speaker 1: him and operation which has created almost a half million
- 0:33Speaker 1: created nurture supported almost a half million businesses. That's not
- 0:37Speaker 1: what we're here today. If you hear that racket in
- 0:40Speaker 1: the background, those are race cars and it's an attentional noise.
- 0:45Speaker 1: It doesn't bother us. We actually like it. It's very
- 0:47Speaker 1: calm and coincidence is God's way. Many anonymous it's and
- 0:53Speaker 1: Andrew Young quote. I didn't know he raced. He didn't
- 0:57Speaker 1: know that. I have a racing license and he's a
- 1:00Speaker 1: real racer. I'm I'm working at it, but I've run
- 1:03Speaker 1: a couple of races, club racing things like that in
- 1:06Speaker 1: Europe and Africa or whatever. But this guy is a
- 1:09Speaker 1: real legit race car driver and he just killed it
- 1:13Speaker 1: here at wrote Atlanta for Petite Lemon, and I was like,
- 1:16Speaker 1: we gotta get the we gotta get the audience to
- 1:19Speaker 1: understand the magic of this, and we're gonna show you
- 1:22Speaker 1: on track and show some of that cool footage. My
- 1:25Speaker 1: man is killing the game. But if people don't really
- 1:28Speaker 1: understand motorsports one, it is one of the most stressful
- 1:33Speaker 1: or you use every party your bodies, one of the
- 1:36Speaker 1: one of the most energized sports in the world, and
- 1:40Speaker 1: one of the top four or five where you use every.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Party of hysic.
- 1:44Speaker 3: It's mental to challenge endurance racing specifically, it's like, I mean,
- 1:49Speaker 3: it's unlike anything else I do. I've never owned anything
- 1:53Speaker 3: like that, but I love it.
- 1:55Speaker 2: It's it's also.
- 1:57Speaker 3: As a it's a it's like every race team is
- 2:01Speaker 3: a small business and like no one, no one at
- 2:06Speaker 3: a track there against their wealth. It's everyone is passionate.
- 2:11Speaker 3: It's incredible.
- 2:12Speaker 2: It's like so often but you like, you talk with
- 2:14Speaker 2: any of the mechanics.
- 2:16Speaker 3: About any detail of a car, and they can, They
- 2:20Speaker 3: will be able to spend hours and hours and hours
- 2:23Speaker 3: talking about part They will eventually become all sorts of
- 2:27Speaker 3: philosophical about the particular part.
- 2:29Speaker 2: It's just like it's it's this one.
- 2:31Speaker 3: It's wonderful to be surrounded by people who give a
- 2:33Speaker 3: ship and really really really.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Put here, giving a ship and care into a product
- 2:39Speaker 2: of any sorts.
- 2:39Speaker 3: And at a race track, it's it's it's all like this,
- 2:43Speaker 3: especially about amazing events like.
- 2:46Speaker 1: AECH and when when Toby comes here, when I go
- 2:48Speaker 1: to a track, we're no longer the CEO or the
- 2:52Speaker 1: founder or this or that. We're both founders of organizations.
- 2:55Speaker 1: We're just race card exactly, and we just want respect that.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And what Toby got out of the car, he had
- 3:01Speaker 1: a situation. Don't worry, Fianna. He was safe. He had
- 3:05Speaker 1: a situa. We had a situation. So another car in
- 3:07Speaker 1: front of him, he who knew very well, and he
- 3:08Speaker 1: lost a couple of seconds on whatever, which irritates us
- 3:11Speaker 1: when it happens. But when he got himself composed for
- 3:15Speaker 1: a minute, he's like, damn, it was great. That was
- 3:19Speaker 1: so much fun.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Right, I'm out there and I just like like, I'm like,
- 3:23Speaker 3: I can't.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Even believe you get to do this, this is even possible.
- 3:27Speaker 3: It's it's I mean, especially this is a very storied
- 3:31Speaker 3: race here for decades, and and they have fifty two
- 3:37Speaker 3: different cars.
- 3:38Speaker 2: There's free races at the.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Same time in the same three different three different races,
- 3:43Speaker 1: get inside the same race, and it's.
- 3:45Speaker 2: A ten hour race, three drivers to car, and.
- 3:50Speaker 1: He just did three stints, which means forty five minutes
- 3:52Speaker 1: times three. And he thought, and he sat up with
- 3:55Speaker 1: the radio that he thought it was like he felt
- 3:57Speaker 1: like it was just fifty minutes. And he dropped five
- 3:59Speaker 1: pounds by the way cash.
- 4:01Speaker 3: So I asked, uh, a race contract, have I radio
- 4:05Speaker 3: connection right like a button on the steering wheel, and
- 4:06Speaker 3: hit back and talked to them, and I asked how
- 4:10Speaker 3: much driving time I've done?
- 4:11Speaker 2: Because every driver.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Asked a minimum of I think two and a half hours,
- 4:16Speaker 3: and they told me twenty minutes. I'm like, God, damn it,
- 4:20Speaker 3: that like just clearly this fed longer, like this is
- 4:22Speaker 3: this is hard. I didn't we have liked And then
- 4:26Speaker 3: like I asked again, how much driving time have I done?
- 4:29Speaker 2: It's like, turns out it's twenty.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I was already in it for two hours ten, So
- 4:35Speaker 3: it's twenty minutes for.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Minimum driving time, right, And I just didn't.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Like, I couldn't believe it because it just felt like,
- 4:43Speaker 3: I mean, it felt like forty minutes.
- 4:45Speaker 1: That's why I felt like and I notice everybody we
- 4:48Speaker 1: have said a thing about speed, well nothing about going fast.
- 4:53Speaker 1: It is uh for people like Toby and myself where
- 4:57Speaker 1: we are multitasking, multi thinking. We can do four things
- 5:00Speaker 1: at the same time. Golf. I mean, there's nothing wrong golf,
- 5:04Speaker 1: golf school. But we would get distracted, we'd be on
- 5:07Speaker 1: our phones, might be you know, we be cut. This
- 5:10Speaker 1: feels whatever. You cannot focus on something else on this race.
- 5:14Speaker 1: When you're in a race car, it is, it takes risks,
- 5:18Speaker 1: it demands respect. I've never said this to him, but
- 5:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna say if it resonates when I'm in a
- 5:24Speaker 1: race car, it's like Buddhism at one hundred and sixty
- 5:27Speaker 1: miles an hour.
- 5:28Speaker 2: That's exactly right, that's fun, it's centers. It's just I mean,
- 5:34Speaker 2: I also find it as everything else.
- 5:37Speaker 3: That people do at the top level, right, like it's
- 5:40Speaker 3: it does fear into the philosophical I just find this
- 5:44Speaker 3: always happens, like it's just like things that you're doing racing,
- 5:48Speaker 3: like better genuinely good life advices. So like basically you
- 5:53Speaker 3: can like you can't win a race in the first corner,
- 5:57Speaker 3: but you can lose it.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 6:00Speaker 3: That's pretty good. That's pretty good matter for life. Yeah, absolutely,
- 6:04Speaker 3: it's like just figure out what matters. I also just
- 6:08Speaker 3: find like I mean, at the end of the day
- 6:12Speaker 3: we drive these.
- 6:13Speaker 2: The more prototype cars.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And MP tools and either downforce cars. You they look
- 6:19Speaker 1: like spaceships to you. Basically it looks.
- 6:21Speaker 2: A bit different from a car on the street. If
- 6:24Speaker 2: you've seen.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Them, are.
- 6:29Speaker 3: And I mean those cars at the end of the
- 6:33Speaker 3: day connected to the ground with like four plane card
- 6:37Speaker 3: sized patches of rubber. That's that's an entire connect connection
- 6:41Speaker 3: to planet Earth.
- 6:41Speaker 2: You have and and.
- 6:44Speaker 3: You are trying like there is amount of resistance that
- 6:49Speaker 3: you can invest in driving forward, growing laterally sideways, steer wheel.
- 6:56Speaker 2: But there's like racing cars different from a normal car.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Where like a normal car, so it.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Starts when you get to the limit and you ask
- 7:05Speaker 3: much of it, you will start feeling this a race car,
- 7:07Speaker 3: Sta stays poort, they are planted, they go.
- 7:10Speaker 2: It's it's not the has my power that's so crazy
- 7:15Speaker 2: in these cars.
- 7:16Speaker 3: It's actually the one hundred and thirty going to a
- 7:19Speaker 3: turn like we like it's this four and a half
- 7:21Speaker 3: geesus of like that's pulling you sideways.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Rod is going that way and you're going your body's
- 7:29Speaker 1: going yeah.
- 7:30Speaker 3: And you have to like just now, that downforce will
- 7:33Speaker 3: push you, like your car could drive on a ceiling
- 7:35Speaker 3: if it wanted to, Like it's that much downforce. And
- 7:38Speaker 3: here wrote Atlanta, you have to throw it into two
- 7:40Speaker 3: and one and you basically have to go full throttle
- 7:45Speaker 3: and any normal reality the car would actually like you're
- 7:50Speaker 3: you're driving at a wall, except that there's a hill
- 7:53Speaker 3: and a compression and that cauts even more stick and
- 7:57Speaker 3: then it grips and a car takes it, and you
- 7:59Speaker 3: just have to believe that that's happening.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Physics, physics, financial literacy, really of course math, spirituality. It's
- 8:10Speaker 1: it's look, you may not believe in God, but you
- 8:13Speaker 1: praying the God when you find God the cockpit. So faith, physics, math, technology,
- 8:22Speaker 1: attention attention focus strategy. That's a strategy in it multitasking,
- 8:30Speaker 1: it's also predictive of it.
- 8:31Speaker 3: You need to understand what everyone knows around your doors,
- 8:34Speaker 3: like so you need to like you need to learn
- 8:37Speaker 3: about other people. It actually helps them lot getting to
- 8:40Speaker 3: know of other drivers because you know who's in the
- 8:42Speaker 3: cars around you, and you know what they're like.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Are they more aggressive?
- 8:45Speaker 3: They you know, like doing player long games and.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it's actually community.
- 8:52Speaker 1: It's a community. Yeah. And and the only race in
- 8:56Speaker 1: racing is racing. You put them on. Nobody knows what ethnicity,
- 9:02Speaker 1: what what gender you are? Are you a good driver?
- 9:05Speaker 1: Are you not? Are you are? Do people look at
- 9:08Speaker 1: you and say, let's stay away from that guy or not?
- 9:10Speaker 1: Your reputation and you're interconnected, You're you're you're you're dependent
- 9:15Speaker 1: in some ways. You depend in some ways on your
- 9:17Speaker 1: team mechanics, those four patches of rubber, those tires are
- 9:22Speaker 1: I mean, you think about this like you gotta be
- 9:26Speaker 1: you gotta be one with the car. Like you're feeling
- 9:28Speaker 1: in your butt, you're filling the road, You're filling the pedals,
- 9:32Speaker 1: You're feeling the gearing. You're hearing the gearing the engines.
- 9:35Speaker 1: When when the ship win, the break the g forces all.
- 9:40Speaker 2: That uh which is the.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Lateral uh pressure. You hear about those in player planes.
- 9:47Speaker 1: You don't hear about the race cars, but they're very
- 9:49Speaker 1: same philosophies. The said you can turn the car upside
- 9:51Speaker 1: down and you know, stickle on the sea level. It
- 9:53Speaker 1: is very spiritual. I get out of a race car
- 9:55Speaker 1: and I just feel so and you were you were
- 9:59Speaker 1: an entire vacation.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Yeah, it's an entire vacation has all elements in it.
- 10:14Speaker 4: I mean it's clear enough for everyone.
- 10:15Speaker 3: But like I I, I just love it's like it's
- 10:17Speaker 3: it's one of the greatest hobbies. Also just because I mean,
- 10:20Speaker 3: this is the most wonderful thing about it doing spacing.
- 10:24Speaker 3: There's a like system there, like I'm a bronze driver,
- 10:28Speaker 3: which means I'm.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Sort of a pro am.
- 10:31Speaker 1: It means he's very very good. He's no punk, he's
- 10:33Speaker 1: a very good driver pro essentially a pro as much
- 10:36Speaker 1: of as much of a pro as an amateur can be.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Who's running a copy?
- 10:42Speaker 3: What what trying? Right, I'm trying to trying to do that. Yes,
- 10:47Speaker 3: in my good labs and.
- 10:49Speaker 1: We're going to show your laps.
- 10:50Speaker 3: So don't worry other people. I'm sharing the cover, you know.
- 10:56Speaker 3: David Hannam my hands and silver driver. He's been a
- 10:58Speaker 3: silver he's been He's done the twenty four urs for
- 11:01Speaker 3: more twelve fourteen times.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Silver.
- 11:05Speaker 3: The driver is like extremely accomplished. Like again, when you
- 11:09Speaker 3: when you win too much, great way upgrade youo. So
- 11:11Speaker 3: so you have your bronze in the ground is silver
- 11:14Speaker 3: and then the gold.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Is a professional money. Platinum is the highest.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Platinum is like the Formula one guys, And so we
- 11:20Speaker 3: can have a gold or platinum in our car.
- 11:23Speaker 2: And so it's it's a spot. We are team members.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Like it's not like.
- 11:28Speaker 3: If you hear about Formula one, they have two cars
- 11:31Speaker 3: and the two teammates actually are the biggest competitors. They're
- 11:34Speaker 3: only the same. In doance racing, we are switching. We
- 11:37Speaker 3: are doing driver switches.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Text us nineteen seconds to switch a driver.
- 11:41Speaker 1: There's another teammates on the on the road right now.
- 11:45Speaker 3: The race is still another what is it? Yeah, hey, yeah,
- 11:48Speaker 3: it's gonna get dark. So this story Atlanta is so
- 11:52Speaker 3: it's it's it gets really dark. Ye I've done dark
- 11:54Speaker 3: testing because happy driver has to do at least four
- 11:57Speaker 3: laps in the dark here to be allowed to go.
- 11:59Speaker 2: And it's like that's a cool experience. But I'm like,
- 12:05Speaker 2: I'm like, just like, luckily this track has been.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Here since the early eighties or like seventies. No one's
- 12:11Speaker 3: gonna remove the track behind this corner. But I have
- 12:14Speaker 3: no possibility of seeing it. I just have to believe.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I have to believe it's still there, and no one's
- 12:21Speaker 3: fun that's also right in front of right and lost
- 12:24Speaker 3: lost the power and over lights. So so anyway, like
- 12:28Speaker 3: this is kind of stuff that happens in racing, and
- 12:30Speaker 3: you do it with good class pros all about jows
- 12:33Speaker 3: like on every race many times, and like so it's
- 12:37Speaker 3: it's wonderful to do us a hobby sport.
- 12:40Speaker 2: With pros together and.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Just because he'll learned so quickly and everyone's there to
- 12:46Speaker 3: you know, help the bronze is to get faster because
- 12:49Speaker 3: having a fast bronze helps you a lots and biscuits and.
- 12:51Speaker 1: So you're wonderfu a bronze and a silver and a
- 12:54Speaker 1: silver is the team. And how does this make make
- 13:00Speaker 1: you better in your family? How does it make you
- 13:04Speaker 1: better in your business? For people who think that we
- 13:07Speaker 1: are like, why would you do that? You know, I
- 13:10Speaker 1: know why I do it, but why does it make
- 13:13Speaker 1: you better? I think?
- 13:15Speaker 3: I mean, I've learned a lot from from from from racing.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I like, I mean, obviously I would do it without
- 13:22Speaker 2: any of these kind of things.
- 13:23Speaker 3: But there's like I just find whenever you get in
- 13:26Speaker 3: contact and study anything that humans do at at a
- 13:32Speaker 3: crazy level, you just find either a new versions of
- 13:37Speaker 3: the same lessons that you've already learned in other ways
- 13:40Speaker 3: that sort of flash out of the picture will come
- 13:43Speaker 3: across like completely new new ideas. I'm honestly, I personally,
- 13:47Speaker 3: I'm incredibly you run a tech company, so I thought
- 13:52Speaker 3: we were really really you know, data driven and excellent
- 13:55Speaker 3: at this kind of thing. And then I joined the
- 13:58Speaker 3: professional racing team and the way they study the car,
- 14:03Speaker 3: the telemetry that they have, there's I mean there's like
- 14:07Speaker 3: six engineers looking at swiggly lines on screens to just
- 14:10Speaker 3: figure out how the car is doing and give feedback
- 14:14Speaker 3: and monitor everything. And like this sort of immediacy of
- 14:17Speaker 3: like feedback is I went to one of my teams saying, hey,
- 14:21Speaker 3: come to the next race, have a look at how
- 14:23Speaker 3: this you need this for shop?
- 14:25Speaker 2: This is exactly how he should run the.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Company, right, immediate feedback, immediately, like.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Just make it visceral, like like like latency makes everything
- 14:34Speaker 3: so hard to relate to, right, Just like this is
- 14:37Speaker 3: a small example, but also just like how things are organized,
- 14:40Speaker 3: how clear the jobs are by everyone. There's like one
- 14:43Speaker 3: engineer who owns the front of a car and one
- 14:44Speaker 3: engineer who owns back of a car, and then there's
- 14:48Speaker 3: one major race engineer.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Who makes it.
- 14:50Speaker 3: It's it's everyone has their has their role, and texting
- 14:54Speaker 3: bright their role. And I think all of this is inspiring,
- 14:58Speaker 3: so so and all of this is RELI.
- 15:01Speaker 1: And it probably makes you nicer when you get home.
- 15:05Speaker 1: We will we won't ask me all to that later.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I know. She changed her like, yeah, go to the
- 15:09Speaker 1: track for me.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Uh.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I always thought I was real. I always thought, but
- 15:18Speaker 1: because I was so different from everybody else around me,
- 15:21Speaker 1: my version of real, I'm like, Okay, well maybe I'm
- 15:23Speaker 1: just wrong in my version of real. I didn't like BS.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I like stripping away the BS into what's real. When
- 15:29Speaker 1: I got into a race car, I thought I understood
- 15:31Speaker 1: the philosophy of life. But when I got into a
- 15:34Speaker 1: race car, it challenged me in ways. That was like
- 15:37Speaker 1: when I was when I was struggling as a kid.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Like it was you can't play around in a race car.
- 15:42Speaker 1: You can't mess around. It doesn't care who you are,
- 15:45Speaker 1: your reputation, you're net worth, your none of that matters.
- 15:48Speaker 1: So you get out of it, You're like, maybe I
- 15:51Speaker 1: am who I think I am because I just did that,
- 15:56Speaker 1: and you can't fake that. It calms it strips away
- 16:00Speaker 1: all the stuff is not it's very authentic.
- 16:03Speaker 3: It is authatic. It's and nothing. Everything is real and nothing.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Nothing is a lie, you know, Just like there is
- 16:13Speaker 3: a theoretical best lab time out there, it's completely impossible
- 16:21Speaker 3: for human to reach it, and it's your actual lab time.
- 16:26Speaker 3: The difference between bad lab time and your lab time
- 16:30Speaker 3: is the sum total of all your little inadequacies. And
- 16:34Speaker 3: and but then the next lap starts one minute fourteen
- 16:39Speaker 3: after the previous one.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Starts, and then you have another shot.
- 16:43Speaker 3: At it, and it's like you will find micro improvements.
- 16:49Speaker 3: You you just learn, learn to get better. It's like
- 16:52Speaker 3: I honestly, like, I mean, I'm like a lot of drivers.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Really really really just like I want.
- 17:00Speaker 3: To win, which I totally respect, I feel like compete
- 17:05Speaker 3: against I.
- 17:07Speaker 2: I to me, drivers are actually kind of.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Obstacles, that's right, that's right, and they make it more interesting.
- 17:13Speaker 3: But like I just want to do a really good
- 17:15Speaker 3: job because I I'm part of a team and like I,
- 17:17Speaker 3: you know, everyone there is relying on what I'm doing
- 17:20Speaker 3: in the car, and I have to deliver bring the
- 17:23Speaker 3: car functioning car ideally at a good place in the
- 17:27Speaker 3: race to my court drivers. And then they do their thing,
- 17:31Speaker 3: and then I will hop into the car again and
- 17:35Speaker 3: do it again and again be together.
- 17:38Speaker 2: And this is.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Brimmers went a business management team, board, directors, shareholders, customers,
- 17:44Speaker 1: very much like everybody, you know what we want to deliver,
- 17:46Speaker 1: we want to bring it back and something else again.
- 17:48Speaker 1: We never talked about this. For me, it's not about
- 17:51Speaker 1: going fast or about the competitor smooth.
- 17:53Speaker 3: It's fast exactly, yeah, it's it's not like just throwing
- 17:57Speaker 3: in the run smooth as fast this. I don't know
- 18:00Speaker 3: if that makes sense, but you only have like I mean, you.
- 18:05Speaker 2: You have a frontle, you have a break usually use
- 18:08Speaker 2: your two legs for voice, and then you have a
- 18:10Speaker 2: steering bell.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Yeah are you saying yeah?
- 18:13Speaker 3: So like that also that's just as fast like the
- 18:18Speaker 3: the steering wheel that goes like this and this. That's
- 18:21Speaker 3: it like it's it's I mean, it couldn't be uh simpler,
- 18:28Speaker 3: but that makes it not easy, right, and it just tells.
- 18:31Speaker 2: You how far you like, Like, there's no like.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Simplicity and h and difficulty are completely uncorrelated. In fact,
- 18:42Speaker 3: usually simplicity allows people to get like to to to
- 18:46Speaker 3: to reach further because it's this is not a lot
- 18:49Speaker 3: of pedal inputs like like the trade like afterwards if
- 18:51Speaker 3: then your view, there's a video, here's my what like
- 18:54Speaker 3: the break, how much brake pedal was pushed, Here's how
- 18:57Speaker 3: much front was pushed, and you know what the steering
- 19:01Speaker 3: angle was right, and we look for relapse and then
- 19:04Speaker 3: overlay someone else's maybe a poor.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Driver's lap and it trust you. Okay, yeah you could
- 19:09Speaker 2: have actually.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Break a little bit later, a little bit harder you trace,
- 19:14Speaker 3: but it be different and then you just learn and
- 19:16Speaker 3: you go out and try it again and you improve,
- 19:18Speaker 3: and I just think it's really really fun and also
- 19:22Speaker 3: like it's fun to be better stuff, and it's really
- 19:25Speaker 3: really fun to get better at stuff that's right. And
- 19:28Speaker 3: so yeah, you get to do this every every weekend.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Every time you get to Paul Newman.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Who is a bit of an inspiration from Toby and I.
- 19:37Speaker 1: You know it as a famous actor, some of you do.
- 19:39Speaker 1: He was actually he was most proud of being a
- 19:42Speaker 1: race car driver, and he started racing at fifty basically
- 19:48Speaker 1: I did. And he won his last race in eighty
- 19:51Speaker 1: two or eighty three, and he was an hourly good
- 19:54Speaker 1: but he started out.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Knowing not good in eighty three when he wor.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Eighty three yes, which like streen cray, it's incredible, incredible,
- 20:02Speaker 1: and uh, he said. It was this great quote when
- 20:06Speaker 1: they asked why do you do auto racing, he said,
- 20:08Speaker 1: it's the only sport I was ever elegant at. I
- 20:11Speaker 1: wasn't great at basketball. I wasn't I was a tackling
- 20:13Speaker 1: dummy in a football whatever. But I feel elegant. And
- 20:19Speaker 1: it's for all stuff we've already said. But it is
- 20:22Speaker 1: quite fascinating and it's amazing, and it's underrated. It is
- 20:26Speaker 1: his own world. And she said, each one of these
- 20:28Speaker 1: financial finishing literacy that point, each one of these trailers,
- 20:32Speaker 1: you see, it's his own l C liability, corporate insurance.
- 20:36Speaker 1: It has profit profit laws, balance sheet income statements, sponsors,
- 20:41Speaker 1: it has assets.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Cumans pots, supply chains, technology, absolutely everything. And every team
- 20:49Speaker 3: is trying to find the next thing. There's a lot
- 20:51Speaker 3: of innovation in there. Like the teams that do best,
- 20:54Speaker 3: other teams that have the type of race engineers that
- 20:57Speaker 3: never settle, and like people who are not motivated again
- 21:01Speaker 3: by just looking good in comparison to the others, or
- 21:06Speaker 3: like being in the field. It's the ones with drivings
- 21:10Speaker 3: further that end up doing it like the ones who
- 21:12Speaker 3: are intrinsically motivated, which is like try to build a
- 21:15Speaker 3: perfect car for the work because cars are ba is
- 21:18Speaker 3: complicatedly set up right like theres entire bood people getting
- 21:21Speaker 3: dive into on setups.
- 21:23Speaker 2: But suffice to say that like innovation is a big
- 21:26Speaker 2: part of that.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Creativity is a big part of figure outside of the
- 21:29Speaker 3: boxes is a big part of it.
- 21:30Speaker 2: There's a world book that exists.
- 21:33Speaker 3: And in most of industry the engineers are there to
- 21:39Speaker 3: look at the specifications and build something that conforms to
- 21:43Speaker 3: the specifications. And hospital job in racing is it's the
- 21:47Speaker 3: one there. It's a competition between the specification.
- 21:52Speaker 2: And the engineer. It's the engineer, like it's the type.
- 21:56Speaker 3: It's a rare type of engineer that likes to break rules,
- 22:00Speaker 3: will find find ways how to stretch for rules. And
- 22:03Speaker 3: there's you know Formula one as well, in like has a.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Long document history where's Adrian Luis built many.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Of the best casts in the worlds and like Senner's
- 22:14Speaker 3: McLaren and Brazil exactly and and and best up and
- 22:21Speaker 3: uh recently winning cars.
- 22:24Speaker 2: And he wrote a book how to Build a Car,
- 22:26Speaker 2: which I recommend.
- 22:28Speaker 3: It's it's just the story of someone who takes the
- 22:32Speaker 3: new formula and it's called formula one. It's like takes
- 22:35Speaker 3: for six out pages, was still college with the drawing
- 22:38Speaker 3: board and starts drawing parts.
- 22:40Speaker 2: But he thinks do the best job. And so I
- 22:45Speaker 2: mean that is like eracing has all sorts of interesting
- 22:49Speaker 2: characters in it.
- 22:50Speaker 3: It's a it's a niche for ah lots of types
- 22:55Speaker 3: of people who I don't know where else it would
- 22:57Speaker 3: be kind of people who like, they've broken the car
- 23:01Speaker 3: and then if I don't, they talked to friends about car,
- 23:04Speaker 3: and then they drive home in their car and then
- 23:07Speaker 3: probably meet some friends of what bes to talk about
- 23:09Speaker 3: cars and watch the race, and then go in the
- 23:11Speaker 3: shop and broke.
- 23:12Speaker 2: On their product car.
- 23:13Speaker 3: It's all that right, and it's it's also wonderful to
- 23:17Speaker 3: support that kind of who really deep desire that something
- 23:21Speaker 3: like this is possible.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Yes, yes, you've got for Savin who sees his fashion
- 23:36Speaker 1: or his his artwork in the car. You've got Lewis
- 23:39Speaker 1: Hamilton who sees fashion, uh design, really designing the car
- 23:46Speaker 1: and designing the world. And they're both great drivers, just
- 23:49Speaker 1: different styles and and different approaches.
- 23:52Speaker 2: It's increasingly real fashion usually like on the festival. He's
- 23:56Speaker 2: doing really well? Is it?
- 23:58Speaker 1: Lowis Hamilton's has has a shop of.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Us doers, has in readimal stuff.
- 24:03Speaker 1: He does have incredible size and he did a great
- 24:05Speaker 1: job of this f one movie.
- 24:06Speaker 2: It's fantastic, isn't that great?
- 24:08Speaker 1: I watched it throughout three times. My father in law's
- 24:10Speaker 1: watched it four times. He's here, He's here, Doctor Dalton's here.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Blown as this whole thing is blown as my.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I mean I did the race that starts the movie right,
- 24:19Speaker 3: like it's like the twenty four hours, that's right, Rolics
- 24:21Speaker 3: twenty four.
- 24:22Speaker 2: I've done this.
- 24:23Speaker 3: I've done literally the walk he does from its trailer
- 24:26Speaker 3: and via currently in trailer at the race track. So
- 24:31Speaker 3: this is my version of the first scene I the
- 24:33Speaker 3: longer movie.
- 24:33Speaker 2: It's yes, and so I've done this walk at.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Two am to the race and they captured it really
- 24:40Speaker 3: really well. So I mean this I also love, like,
- 24:43Speaker 3: like what a wonderful celebration of endurance racing before it
- 24:47Speaker 3: Ben gets into Formula one, which you know we started.
- 24:49Speaker 1: So anybody who's not clear endurance racing, so sprint racing
- 24:53Speaker 1: is what it sounds like, a sprint endurance racing is
- 24:57Speaker 1: two hours, six hours, twelve hours, twenty.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Four hours, twenty four hours of Lama is the biggest race.
- 25:04Speaker 3: I'm doing Space in the wood Rolex twenty four so
- 25:07Speaker 3: it's one of the biggest, probably second biggest. And Kirv
- 25:11Speaker 3: I like the peteam Lamar which is in Atlanta, right Atlanta,
- 25:16Speaker 3: which is a ten hour race.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Right for anybody who likes to lose weight, here's this
- 25:22Speaker 1: is the sport for you. You lose five to ten
- 25:26Speaker 1: pounds in.
- 25:27Speaker 2: The day in a long stanp if it's hot.
- 25:30Speaker 1: So you just did three forty five minutes stance. My
- 25:32Speaker 1: guess is you lost forty five pounds easily.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Easily. Yeah, I'll have to get that back.
- 25:37Speaker 1: So yeah, we're gonna go eat now and get some
- 25:39Speaker 1: of that back. When he got out, he had a wet,
- 25:42Speaker 1: a cold cold pack around his neck like an ice pack. Yes,
- 25:46Speaker 1: because you're at over one hundred degrees.
- 25:49Speaker 2: In the it gets really it's costing.
- 25:52Speaker 1: As we wrap up, tell you give the audience one
- 25:55Speaker 1: or two examples of leadership lessons you've learned learned in
- 26:01Speaker 1: the car that you can that you By the way,
- 26:04Speaker 1: my man has already brought Shopify to and NASCAR, he's
- 26:09Speaker 1: got shopping. He's bringing his business to wherever he goes,
- 26:12Speaker 1: and Shopify is already starting to dominate the space. I
- 26:15Speaker 1: didn't even know Louise Emine shop Why Why am I surprised?
- 26:20Speaker 1: But what is what is a leadership lesson that you've
- 26:23Speaker 1: learned from from being a race meg?
- 26:26Speaker 2: What I.
- 26:29Speaker 3: From my core drivers were much more experience than me.
- 26:34Speaker 3: The quality and the directors offer feedback back if any
- 26:37Speaker 3: get out of a car like but just like the
- 26:39Speaker 3: small like like we we have a ritual of like
- 26:43Speaker 3: after every session, go through it and the race engineer
- 26:45Speaker 3: comes and just listens and he's basically he runs he
- 26:49Speaker 3: runs the car right and just listen to a driver
- 26:52Speaker 3: and he go through every turn and any any any feedback.
- 26:55Speaker 2: And then like he doesn't do the things ask him to.
- 27:00Speaker 3: He ignores every suggestion, which like like like that is
- 27:05Speaker 3: also a good leadership.
- 27:06Speaker 2: But he understands.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Every He will understand quacklum under the problem. If we
- 27:11Speaker 3: talk about symptoms like understeering, he understands the car at.
- 27:15Speaker 2: A completely different level.
- 27:17Speaker 3: And then he goes back and tells the team to
- 27:20Speaker 3: do nothing of the sorts of what we said, and
- 27:22Speaker 3: somehow magically the car is now more pointy or like.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Unsure means that you turn the car, but it does
- 27:27Speaker 1: not turn with you as much as you'd like. It
- 27:30Speaker 1: overshares the other the opposite problem.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Those are all terms like what do they mean? Doesn't matter.
- 27:35Speaker 3: It's just like a race car drivers give feedback to
- 27:38Speaker 3: each other. And but like it's it's this thing of
- 27:42Speaker 3: like this, observe like this.
- 27:46Speaker 2: It's an like if you if you come across like
- 27:48Speaker 2: observed object.
- 27:51Speaker 3: So I can't actually go through the list. It just
- 27:55Speaker 3: means that it's basically one of us looping. You figure
- 27:58Speaker 3: out what's true, and then what are we doing our
- 28:00Speaker 3: out it, and then you do it, and then you
- 28:01Speaker 3: go back to us and just it's that and so
- 28:05Speaker 3: constantly improve, constantly improving, always chasing, never settling. That is
- 28:10Speaker 3: I really think that's I think you see this in
- 28:14Speaker 3: all the best teams.
- 28:16Speaker 2: But it's it's a bit muted. It's it's it's in
- 28:20Speaker 2: the background. It's unacknowledged in a way.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Sometimes people talk about it, but then they can go
- 28:24Speaker 3: for a long term not talking about it. In a
- 28:27Speaker 3: race cup, it's the entire thing. And then I think
- 28:31Speaker 3: this inversion is I think business.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Would use this a little bit more so to summarize
- 28:36Speaker 1: what you're saying or wrap it up. We were talking
- 28:38Speaker 1: about earlier about how how things to be better at
- 28:42Speaker 1: the side, and you're saying, in his business, he'll take
- 28:45Speaker 1: a low performing group and basically say, Okay, this group
- 28:50Speaker 1: doesn't exist anymore. We created a new group. Now you
- 28:52Speaker 1: can apply to the new group. I encourage to apply
- 28:54Speaker 1: to the group or not. But I'm preting a new
- 28:56Speaker 1: group because I don't like this one was performing constantly improving,
- 28:59Speaker 1: and people always want to try to step up to
- 29:02Speaker 1: that new that that new group and perform and look
- 29:05Speaker 1: like they've been rebored exactly.
- 29:06Speaker 3: It's a it's a refounding event. It's like it's it's
- 29:10Speaker 3: fun to be part of something new.
- 29:12Speaker 2: It's it's it's.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Stressful too to to try to bend something that's going
- 29:20Speaker 3: in a different direction. It takes a long time. It's
- 29:23Speaker 3: sordid work. Everyone knows. Okay, now we're gonna like to
- 29:26Speaker 3: change maagement for whatever. Like it's annoying. I found you
- 29:31Speaker 3: can compress all like I mean, you are compressing like
- 29:34Speaker 3: it's it's it's a it's a harder conversation to say, hey,
- 29:37Speaker 3: something ends. If you're doing something new, fifteen minutes of
- 29:43Speaker 3: deep uncertainty can replace months of abonue. And I think
- 29:48Speaker 3: that just is like it's it's it's way better for everyone,
- 29:51Speaker 3: and it's it's just more fun because now now you
- 29:53Speaker 3: get to say afterwards, it's booking everything is everyone's now
- 29:56Speaker 3: you knows it's a new department, this new thing, and
- 29:59Speaker 3: then you can say, for instance, your career is like
- 30:02Speaker 3: you have an art of you know, lay working with me,
- 30:06Speaker 3: working at that shopify refounding like a department that ended
- 30:12Speaker 3: up becoming an important part of company, and like that's
- 30:15Speaker 3: I mean that sounds better on your CV and like
- 30:17Speaker 3: just language twice, but it's also true.
- 30:19Speaker 2: And I think that's like giving like creating as many
- 30:22Speaker 2: opportunities for people like that has.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Been one of the things that has really been not
- 30:28Speaker 3: very obviously the journey and can be.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Done absolutely inspiring. I hopefully you guys have gotten some
- 30:37Speaker 1: some fun that saw a fun part of Toby that
- 30:40Speaker 1: you would not have seen otherwise, but also learn a
- 30:44Speaker 1: little bit about life and leadership and courage. Courage what
- 30:48Speaker 1: you do basically what you do when you have all
- 30:50Speaker 1: the facts, but with really courages oftentimes what you do
- 30:56Speaker 1: be in spite of your insecurities and your fears. When
- 30:58Speaker 1: I first got into a race car, I was petrified,
- 31:01Speaker 1: but I wanted to overcome. Very few things scare me,
- 31:05Speaker 1: so I sort of was attracted to the fact that
- 31:07Speaker 1: here's this excellence, this excellence machine that I don't yet
- 31:11Speaker 1: master other people have. I think I can learn to
- 31:14Speaker 1: do it. I got to get out of my own way.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I got to get out of my own fear. I
- 31:19Speaker 1: got to believe and have competence with the tires can
- 31:23Speaker 1: system in myself, and then when all that comes together.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Do something like I think my advice to everyone is like,
- 31:33Speaker 3: try to do hot things surrounded by friends. Like that
- 31:38Speaker 3: can be a company, it can be like a hobby.
- 31:41Speaker 3: And find the thing that like scares.
- 31:44Speaker 2: You a little bit and it seems.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Really hot and you know, you know good at because
- 31:49Speaker 3: writing up that, like learning crow is like it's been
- 31:52Speaker 3: entire point, it's the best thing in the world. It's
- 31:56Speaker 3: it's only annoying or it's only scary for a while
- 31:59Speaker 3: after you start climbing it.
- 32:00Speaker 2: After you start yes nothing, yes you.
- 32:05Speaker 1: You guys just got a masterclass. Don't have some food
- 32:09Speaker 1: is the more racing love and Life. Money and Wealth
