• 0:00
Weekly Dose of Fat, show number 79 for Friday, November 6, 2015.
• 0:06
[upbeat music] The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee.
• 0:31
The lake it is said never gives up a dead when the skies of November turn gloomy. Where the fat bikes so fly the wrecks and more than the internet could stand empty.
• 0:45
That good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed when the gales of November came early. [laughs] Welcome to the show, everybody.
• 1:00
We categorically deny the allegations [laughs] that have been brought against us by the Gnome Council. And everybody- [laughs]... please welcome to the show Mr. JK Living with that fine rendition of, uh- Oh, Mr.
• 1:16
Lightfoot? Yes, Sven Foot. Gor- Gor- Gordon meets Sven Foot's version- Gordon meets Sven Foot. [laughs]... of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Fat Bike Radio and the Weekly Dose of Fat is sponsored by our amigos at Surly Bikes.

• 1:43
All right, JK, please tell our listener what we've got in store for them this week. Uh- We start the show with the event of the week. We welcome Anthony Cupaiolo.
• 1:55
We take calls from our listeners and maybe, if we're lucky, learn something about embrocation. Yeah.
• 2:02
As we've been charged with the Politburo's authority to pronounce with a lightning strike, fat and plus bike news in the glorious state-run collective farm field, Fiat. Also known as the Fatty Farm Field Report.
• 2:19
It's time for the Fat Bike Event of the Week. This event of the week is the Winter Color Fest on the Global Fat Bike Day. Which, as we all know, is December 5th this year. So do we have
• 2:33
the man behind the Winter Color Fest, Mr. Andy Bedinger, on the phone? I believe we do. Welcome to the program. This is Old Bear. Oh, it's Old Bear. Old Bear. [laughs] Oh. Hey, Old Bear, can- Old Bear, stand by.
• 2:47
We're gonna- Yeah, stand by, Old Bear... talk to Andy. We're gonna, we're gonna s- Yeah, I will... we'll find Andy here. Hey, welcome to the radio program. Who do we have on the line? Andy. [laughs] There he is.
• 3:01
How's it going, dude? [laughs] He, he, I forgot that he used to- Good... live in, uh, Colorado, so the area code thing fooled me. Oh, we get fooled.
• 3:08
[laughs] So Andy, you're here to talk about the Winter Color Fest- The Winter Color Festival... on Global Fat Bike Day at, at, uh, at the Great Trails.
• 3:20
They're not my home trails anymore because we have more trails in Wisconsin than we used to have, but it used to be my home trail, the Kettle Moraine trails. Tell us about your event. Yeah, John Muir, to be specific.
• 3:33
Yeah, John Muir. Um, yeah, the, uh, John Muir Trails, um, Southern Kettle Moraine. Um, which you're right, there are a lot more trails popping up here and there, but um, yeah, this one None with 50 miles-...
• 3:47
focused in on our trails... of trail, though, like Kettle has. That's one of the beauties of it, and that's kind of what we're trying to emphasize with the Winter Color Festival.
• 3:56
Um, you know, the multiple loops that you can do out there as well as mix and matching, um, sections of trail to make your own loop. Um- So-... that's kind of where the Color Festival comes from.
• 4:07
Yeah, the, the- [clears throat] [laughs] The, the winter festival, your festival, i- is it gonna be a race or is it gonna be a ride or is it gonna be both? It's gonna be both because it is Global Fat Bike Day. Uh huh.
• 4:21
Um, definitely don't wanna, you know, push people out of it. It's more of a, this is Global Fat Bike Day. Global, you know, fat biking's about everything, you know, racing, riding, um,
• 4:37
you know, just enjoying all kinds of different aspects of it, summer and winter. Um, and what the big thing is kind of our local DNR, um, hasn't really caught on to fat biking.
• 4:50
So we wanna kind of show them, uh, what, what this is about and hopefully get some grooming going, uh, this winter or, or coming into next winter. Cool. So all the proceeds- Or later...
• 5:01
from this, from this event are gonna go towards winter grooming there at Kettle, huh? Winter grooming, um, with a focus on a new rocon- Oh, cool...
• 5:12
which is kind of what we're finding to be one of the better grooming pieces of equipment. You know- Yeah... universal- You know... not in the wintertime only. They, they use one up at the- But it-...
• 5:21
Chequamegon trails and, uh, they've, I just learned just yesterday that, uh, Silver Lake got a rocon, so. Oh, yeah, they got that. Awesome. We were wondering about that. It, they were talking about it, but yeah.
• 5:35
And I've actually pulled around their- Yeah, rocons are pretty cool pieces of equipment. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
• 5:39
I know that, uh, I probably shouldn't be allowed to r- to drive it, so that's, that's, that's, that's a good thing. I get out of grooming then, or I'll just, I'll just drive the snowmobile and- [laughs]...
• 5:49
'cause I'm probably pretty dangerous on that thing. I shouldn't be on a motor, motor-powered bicycle. I'm dangerous enough just with a pedal one. So where- Well, I mean, it is a, the ultimate fat, though.
• 6:00
You got, like, what, a 12-inch wide tire? [laughs] I know. With, like, like-....5 of a PO, of one PSI in there, or one pound, one pound of air in there is, uh- That's crazy...
• 6:14
what, that's what the Flammangan guys were telling us. Well, Andy, thanks- Well... for calling in and telling us about your event. We're gonna have a link to the notes. It's on December 5th.
• 6:24
It is in La Grange, Wisconsin. Yep. They got a lot of nice girls. [laughs] Yep.
• 6:29
Facebook page, Winter Color Festival, and then, um, yeah, festivities start around 10:00 for the, the rides, but races start at noon, and we're gonna have a ton of raffle prizes, bonfire, and PBRs and all the goods.
• 6:43
Do you have, uh- So... how, you have rental bikes out there, or are they all spoken for already? They are available. We have a huge fleet of Trek Farleys this year, from non-suspended to suspended to carbon.
• 6:56
So- Killer, man... check them out. Yeah. [laughs] All right, that's Backyard Bikes. Yeah, probably ought to get your request- Yeah... in early, though.
• 7:02
I don't imagine they'll, they'll- For Global Fat Bike Day, for sure... yep, they'll be around forever. Especially with this, this Fat Bike Day happening. Yeah. Cool, man. Cool. All right, Andy.
• 7:12
Well- Thanks for calling in, brother. See ya. Good evening. Bye. All right, top of the hill, boys. Cheers. Cheers, guys. [cans opening] Hey, while we're, uh- I already opened mine...
• 7:26
while we're waiting for Anthony to call, uh, let's just say a quick howdy to Old Bear. How's it going, Old Bear? Howdy, guys. How you doing, man? Haven't heard from you for a couple of weeks. Well, we're doing okay.
• 7:41
We moved into a, a retirement center. Uh, I had to, 'cause my wife, you know, she has some problems. I don't have the problems she's got, but we moved in, and they let me keep my bike in my room. It's really nice and...
• 7:54
But I've been out riding a lot, getting out and, when it isn't raining. All right. I don't have any rain gear. Yeah. Yeah, you guys got some- I've put in miles... some wetness down there the last couple of weeks.
• 8:07
We've had a little bit, yeah. But it w- it was so dry, you know, the, the, the ground just soaked right up,
• 8:15
'cause we didn't have rain for, like, two weeks, and down here that's a long spell not to have rain here in Missouri. Right on, man. So- Well- Yeah, um. We're gonna- Go ahead.
• 8:28
I was just gonna say, we're gonna take a quick break here, um, and we're gonna get our s- our s- guest of the week on. If you wanna hang on the line and listen- Okay... you're welcome to.
• 8:38
Um, but we've got, uh, Anthony Cupaiolo calling in real quick here, and, uh, so we'll just take a quick break and we'll be back with Anthony. Okay. Okay, I'll listen in.
• 8:49
[upbeat music] What do Heather Best, Kevin Breitenbach, and Jeff Wooley have in common?
• 8:54
Well, they're all world record holders and champions of the Iditarod Trail Invitational, and they all chose Becker Frame Bags and Hydration Packs for their championship run.
• 9:05
Becker Gear is custom designed and purpose-built to fit your bike. Fat, skinny, and everything in between, Becker Gear is the bag maker of champions. [upbeat music] You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
• 9:24
Please welcome to the radio program the one and only Anthony Cupaiolo, the founder of First Tracks Productions. Yeah, we featured the trailer for Anthony's film last week on the site.
• 9:35
Uh, First Tracks is behind many of the super rad shots that you've seen of Pat Smage on the wing of an old DC-3 in Iceland, and we invited Anthony to come on the show and talk more about the new film.
• 9:46
So, welcome to the program, Anthony. Well, thanks for having me, guys. I really appreciate it. So just what got you into fat biking in the first place? How'd you get on that path?
• 9:56
Well, I live out in Lake Tahoe, and I moved here, uh, for snowboarding. I mean, I came, I moved here a long time ago and mainly, mainly for that reason.
• 10:05
And I was always into biking, but it was kind of more of my summer thing, my off-season thing, and we had a couple bad winters in a row here and finally got curious enough to, to go down to m- to my local shop and borrow a fat bike.
• 10:17
And man, it was, it was transformational. [laughs] You know?
• 10:20
It was one of those things, my very first turn on it on some banked, uh, banked turn, and had perma-grin on my face the rest of the day, and it's kind of a, a rest is history thing.
• 10:29
And honestly, now, as, as much as I still love snowboarding, um, the bike is, is my main thing now. And, and, uh, you know, that kind of...
• 10:37
I do video production for a living, and it just kind of made sense to try to capture some of what I, you know, a, a new passion that I had discovered.
• 10:45
So, uh, the fat bike filming just kind of was a, a natural progression. Very cool. So Off the Beaten Path is the movie that is, uh, in the final production stage right now.
• 10:57
We know that, uh, we know that our amigo, Pat Smage, is in the movie. Maybe you can talk a little bit about your time with Pat. Pat is one of our homies here. Or maybe, uh- Yeah...
• 11:08
in, in addition to that, maybe share, uh, with our audience some of the other riders that are featured in the film. For sure.
• 11:16
Well, yeah, you mentioned Pat, and, and Pat's amazing, and I think most of the audience is probably aware of him, but, uh, but if not, real quick, he, he is, I think, now the eight times AMA Mototrial Champion. Right.
• 11:27
And he is not just good on a dirt bike. He is good on anything with wheels, and even with one wheel. I've seen some of his unicycling stuff, and he kills it on that, too.
• 11:36
And, you know, uh, he, uh, he became an ambassador for Fatback, and Fatback is one of the sponsors of the film, so they were kind of able to help put us together.
• 11:44
Uh, first time we met up with h- him was after a, a moto event they had in Arizona.
• 11:49
He was driving back home to Wisconsin, and Moab isn't too far out of the way for him on that drive, so we met him out there and only got a couple days in with him, but it, the amount of stuff that he was able to accomplish in a couple days was amazing.
• 12:01
And I think some of the most impressive stuff that he did was climbing, you know, not just his normal trial stuff, but able to climb- Some of these trails that, you know, basically nobody out in Moab climbs, you know, their normal hike-a-bike stuff.
• 12:12
So that was really neat to see. And you were telling me that- But, uh, but Pat, there's a lot more people involved than just Pat.
• 12:17
Um, there's another fat bike, uh, Fatback ambassador in it, uh, Elizabeth Sampy, and Liz is really rad. She's a, she's kind of more of an endurance rider, but she can ride everything.
• 12:28
And, you know, we, uh, we met up with her out in Iceland, and she killed it on all the terrain out there, and her and Pat have some really cool stuff riding together.
• 12:37
And the, the rest of the crew that we worked with is basically people that live in or near Tahoe in our home base, and we're fortunate to have lots of really cool terrain nearby.
• 12:47
So that worked out well, and just from, you know, being involved in the mountain biking community out here, I knew some, several strong riders and got some people involved, some people who are really into the whole adventure riding thing, down to, down to explore, down to
• 13:01
see if something can work and, you know, not be too bummed out if it doesn't. You know, that it takes a, a special sort of person, [laughs] I think, to, you know, be, uh, be into that sort of trial and error stuff.
• 13:13
It, it sometimes can be a bit of a trial and error with- Right. People who are comfortable in the backcountry and can take care of themselves- Yeah... and, and, uh, not panic when things- Yeah. Yeah, exactly...
• 13:20
don't go quite right. I hear you there. W- one, I think one of the, the more fun or interesting stars will definitely be my dog Emmy. She sh- she's got [laughs] Oh, yeah, yeah. Nice name. She's got probably a full- Yeah.
• 13:34
[laughs] Yeah. She's got probably a full segment in the film, all of it on snow, a lot of it out riding with me, and, you know, she just, she's got a bundle of energy, and, uh, you know- Yeah, Emmy's a ripper, man.
• 13:43
I- Yeah, she, she do- she rips. And she's a, you know, I, I, the ride that I took with her today, she was, she was bummed when she could tell that we were turning around. [laughs] She was just like, "That's it."
• 13:53
That's funny. But, uh, you know, it's great. She's great motivation for me.
• 13:56
There are some days where, you know, I, things might not have been working out perfect or whatever, but, you know, it was just great seeing her out there. That got me happy, excited, you know, it kept me in a good mood.
• 14:06
So, you know, g- getting out there with your dog, that, that's a pretty cool thing to be able to do. Oh, yeah. Hells yeah. My, my dogs love snow.
• 14:13
Um, I have big floppy Bernese Mountain Dogs that can't really run for more than a mile or two. Oh, right on. But, um, they, they just- [laughs] Yeah, but- They, they love the snow, and they just wrestle with each other.
• 14:25
It's, it's awesome. It's awesome. Dogs are awesome. And, and, you know, it's, I, I, I'm of the mindset that dogs can definitely smile 'cause so, and I, I look at her- Oh, yeah. [laughs]...
• 14:33
I'm like, "She is smiling right now." Oh, yeah. "That is a happy dog." Yeah, absolutely. So w- we talked a little bit about some of the people in the movie. What about locations?
• 14:42
Where did you travel to do this film and, uh, you know, what kind of, what kind of stuff did you see? Yeah.
• 14:47
Well, we're, we're based in Tahoe, and we're fortunate to have some really good backcountry style terrain for, for some of the on-snow stuff.
• 14:55
And, and we really tried to explore some of the zones that I had typically been out to in the winter for snowboarding or snowmobiling even. Mm-hmm.
• 15:02
And, uh, that, that was really, really cool because there was a lot of situations where the bikes worked great on that backcountry style terrain.
• 15:10
In the spring when you kind of have that thaw, freeze cycle, we get, uh, corn out here, and the bikes just killed on that sort of stuff.
• 15:16
And we have some stretches during the win- we didn't have a great winter, and we had some stretches where we hadn't had snow for a while, so things, you know, kind of firmed up enough to be able to really try some different things out.
• 15:26
So that, that was really cool. Um, and we're also, our backyard is, is kind of the, the whole state of Nevada, and Nevada's a really, really interesting, diverse state landscape-wise.
• 15:36
We, we did some really cool stuff on these sand dunes out in Winnemucca. We did stuff outside of Vegas. We hooked up with Liz and Pat down there, again, during Interbike and- Mm-hmm...
• 15:46
everything from Bootleg Canyon to the other side of Vegas out near Red Rock Canyon, really interesting terrain.
• 15:52
So that was cool 'cause I'd never done any riding, um, down there and kind of always thought of Vegas as being, you know, the Strip, and that's about it.
• 15:59
And getting a chance to be able- And Sven and I saw you and, and Pat at the Fatback booth at Interbike. Yeah. Yeah. At Fatback. You know- And we talked and, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Cool.
• 16:09
Bootleg Canyon's a r- uh, is a rad spot. Oh, yeah. I mean, you know, and, and Pat makes it look even radder because of his skillset. [laughs] But, uh, but it was very neat, like getting a chance to check that out.
• 16:19
So, uh, and then we, we had a big trip to, uh, Iceland, and, uh, that was awesome. You know, we hooked up with the folks from Loft over there. Mm-hmm. Um, and, uh, we got to travel around quite a bit.
• 16:28
I mean, it's a beautiful country, really diverse landscapes there as well.
• 16:32
I mean, glaciers and waterfalls and, you know, it's just, it, that, that was a very cool experience and really, I think, helps kinda diversify a little bit of what people will see in the project. Very cool.
• 16:45
So when can people, uh, see the movie? When can people see the premiere of Off the Beaten Path? Right on. Well, we don't have the exact date of when that's gonna be y- yet.
• 16:59
It's definitely gonna be showing at several Fatbike related events over the course of the winter, from Nationals in Crested Butte to- Mm-hmm... the Big Fat Ride up, uh, in Alaska. Very cool.
• 17:11
That, uh, I think you guys know Kathy Merchant, that they put on. Right. She was on the show last week. And there's gonna be a few other things, so it's definitely gonna be at for sure.
• 17:18
The very first one, I d- I don't quite know, but I'm, my thought is it's gonna be before Christmas, definitely gonna be probably sometime in December. Probably the very first one will be in the Tahoe area.
• 17:27
Um, and then after it's done, our goal is hopefully for it to get picked up by a, by a TV station.
• 17:34
You know, there's a couple different networks we're talking to, and, you know, we'd love to get it out on TV, and that would be one place where people would be able to see it for free. Mm-hmm.
• 17:41
Um, and, and no matter what, our plan has always been to get it online in its entirety for free.
• 17:46
It's just that probably won't be the very first thing we do as we're still, you know, going through the premiere process and, uh, you know, trying to get it picked up on TV. But, uh, but it, it will make its way online.
• 17:56
I'm sure it'll be on fatbike.com for people to see for free at some point. Absolutely. Yeah, yeah.
• 18:01
You know, 'cause our goal is really just we wanna, we wanna showcase what this is all about and, you know, just, just stoke people out and get people more motivated to go out and ride, and that's, that's kind of what the whole thing is.
• 18:13
So, uh, we, we do wanna get as many eyeballs on it as possible. So free is, free is the word. Um, it might not just be free initially.
• 18:21
[laughs]What, uh, do you have any plans to have, like, if, if there's a theater in, in your local area, do you have any plans to do a screening arrangement with promoters in- Yeah, well-... specific areas?...
• 18:32
people can actually get ahold of us through... Yeah, they can get ahold of us through our website at First Tracks Productions dot com.
• 18:37
And what we're doing is we're working with, uh, a couple people have reached out to us, uh, in Mammoth and other places, and they wanna do help set up screenings or showings.
• 18:46
And basically what we're doing is if, if the event is free, we'll give you the video for free.
• 18:51
If the event is, you're charging for it, but the money is going to a local trails organization or another nonprofit that, you know, you can let us know about and it's a good cause, we'll give it to you for free, too.
• 19:02
And, you know, if it's something that you'd like to talk about maybe just doing it as an event to try to make some money off of, we'll talk to you guys about that, too, and, and we might have to figure something out.
• 19:11
But, uh, but we, we love the idea. If anybody wants to do something as a benefit for trails organizations or anything along those lines, get ahold of us. We'll, we'll make sure that we get you the video.
• 19:22
I, I wanna go to the premiere in a big, white stretch limo and have like a polar bear on a, on a leash. [laughs] Well, I wanna do that as well. [laughs] That's just me, you know?
• 19:36
So maybe we can run, maybe we can have that in Milwaukee, [laughs] or Quebec. Yeah. They have polar bears in Quebec. Anything goes in Canada. [laughs] So [laughs]
• 19:48
we, uh, we really appreciate you coming on the show and g- telling us more about the film. I can't wait to see the whole thing. The trailer is just electrifying. Yeah, we should put another link to that trailer.
• 19:59
Right on, guys. A- again, I really appreciate the opportunity to talk about it, and it's been such a fun process, and we met so many rad people along the way.
• 20:05
It just, it, it really is one of those life-changing-in-a-great-way experiences. I'm, I'm really glad to have had a chance to be a part of it. Hallelujah, brother. We, we agree.
• 20:15
You know, it's, it's, it's, it's a great, great, great time to be alive in cycling. It's so much fun. Yes, it is. Great people. All right, Anthony, well, thanks for being on the show. Sure do appreciate it.
• 20:29
Well, thank you again. Take care, guys. All right, have a good day. So long. See ya. Hey, we're gonna be right back with next week's call-in question after a word from our sponsors.
• 20:40
[upbeat rock music] When it comes to fat bikes, Zion Cyclery in Zion, Illinois, has you covered.
• 20:52
They stock fatties from Surly, Salsa, 907, Borealis, and Trek, as well as everything from 45NRTH.
• 21:01
The staff is friendly, the mechanics are top-notch, and they stock the largest selection of fat bikes in the Chicago-Milwaukee area. There's a mountain bike park and some great beach riding in Zion, so come.
• 21:12
Make a day of it. Call 847-746-2200 or visit ZionCyclery.com. Hi, this is Jordan Wakeley. When I'm not winning races, I'm listening to Sven and Gomez on Fat Bike Radio.
• 21:30
And we're back. JK, what is next week's call-in question? Dun-dun-na-na. What are you doing to prepare your gear for the impending winter season?
• 21:45
Call in next week, Wednesday, from 8:00 to 9:00 Central Daylight Standard Savings Dun-dun-dun-dun. Oh, no, no. What's that? Central, Central, uh, Central Time. Yeah. Central Standard Time.
• 21:55
We're done with Daylight Savings. Yeah. Yeah. There you go. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know if you're, I don't know if you're done with Daylight Savings where you are, but we got rid of that last weekend. Yeah. Yeah.
• 22:04
Well, I think that it's, it, it's- Call in, call in next week, Wednesday, from 8:00 to 9:00 Central [laughs] Standard Time- [laughs]... to 818-918-2453, and let's discuss live. So I came up with this idea- [coughs]...
• 22:21
when I, uh, I pulled my boots all out for winter, and I washed the liners of, of my Sorel's that are probably [laughs] haven't been washed in, like, I don't know, since 2001, something like that.
• 22:32
But, uh, so I had to go on the internet and figure that out. You know, how do you do it? Do you put it in the washing machine? All that.
• 22:38
So I came up with this question, and it can be about getting your winter clothing ready. It could be about changing the oil in your hub for 35 below.
• 22:48
It could be, you know, changing to a cayenne pepper Gooch butter for warming your buns. [laughs] That's a great time to change your, uh, your fluid in your Rolloff hub. Oh, true that.
• 23:01
You use a little thinner, little thinner fluid in there for the winter. And here's- You wanna do that every, every 3,000 miles or six months, just like a car, I think.
• 23:10
Here's a, a public service announcement with JK on piccolo. [laughs] Do, do, do, do, do, do, do. [laughs] Do, do, do, do, do, do. You know, uh, over across the hall at the Schlitz-Heikel's, uh, hospital for fat bikes,
• 23:25
Otis lies in a coma with his seat post stuck in his seat tube. Does that sound comfortable? Not at all. I think not. So this might be a good time to take out your seat post, take some Fillwood, rub it all in there.
• 23:43
Maybe do a l- nice cleaning and then a nice layer of Fillwood. Slip it back in there. Make it all happy. Good call. Yeah. There you go.
• 23:55
So, uh, that's this week's question, and that kinda slips and slides us into the Fatty Farm Field Report. Mm-hmm. This week's Fatty Farm Field Report is sponsored by Uncle Dick's Bead Slip. Check out
• 24:10
the stuff at uncledicksbikeshop.com. So our secret word this week was, uh, Moonlander Man Chub. Moonla-[laughs] What, what are we gonna, what are we gonna do for this week?
• 24:28
Uh, I think we're gonna go with Gordon Lightfoot since he's, uh, playing live tonight in Milwaukee at the Pabst Theater. And- And there was that tasteful rendition at the beginning of the show. Yes. [laughs] Homage.
• 24:39
Yeah. [laughs] Um, and, and what are we gonna use these secret words for? Yeah, what, why do we have- Why?... secret words? Why? So all you have to do is call in during the show.
• 24:47
The first caller that calls in and says the secret words, Gordon, Gordon Lightfoot, wins like a fabulous prize package mailed right to your door.
• 24:56
We just got a big box of schwag from Surly, shirts and socks, and, uh, like there's a nice thermos with an elephant with a gas mask on it that says Surly on there. It's pretty nice.
• 25:09
So there's, there's gadgets and all kinds of stuff. And we have Becker Sewing bags coming. Tupper just sent me a, a snapshot of, uh, his, his work on some bags that we're gonna be giving away in December.
• 25:22
So from now until Christmas, we are just gonna be giving away the hats. Lots of stuff. Yeah. So, uh, call in next week and tell us what the secret word was, which I can't even remember what it was now.
• 25:36
[laughs] But we'll figure that out. Gordon Lightfoot. Oh, yeah, that was it. We're back. Um [laughs]
• 25:42
Because I'm taking all of my cognitive and Jedi powers and sending some healing vibes out to Steve Fuller, Steve, uh, was riding his bike on a gravel road, and a big buck that got spooked out of a field 'cause they were, they were harvesting, uh, this deer nailed him, broke seven of his ribs, collapsed his lung, broke his collarbone, lacerated his face, and probably lacerated other places too, but I just know he got stitches on his face.
• 26:14
Uh, he was in the hospital, so, uh- Yeah, that's a no fun. I went, I went collarbone and two ribs- Oh... and it was insanity- And the-... for a month. It was- On his Facebook page- Yeah...
• 26:27
all his friends now are taunting him [laughs] with pictures of deer. So we're not gonna do that. We're just gonna send you some healing vibes, bro. Yeah. Well, brother.
• 26:35
Call in to the show sometime and tell us about the, the horror of the white-tailed deer. [laughs] Hey, we talked about giving some stuff away for a, a secret word to our listeners.
• 26:47
We also have a big contest going for Global Fat Bike Day. You wanna- Yeah... recap that for our- Yeah, the-... our friends on the, uh, on the show? The organizers that, uh,
• 26:59
decide to run a Toys for Tots holiday gift drive in conjunction with a ride, and it doesn't have to be right on Global Fat Bike Day, 'cause we have Jobu up there who's going to do it right after Thanksgiving.
• 27:12
Yeah, the Saturday- Uh... after Thanksgiving is their pie burner event. Right.
• 27:17
So the organizer that gets the largest number of toys gathered, and you have to get the group together and take a group shot of the toys, you count the toys on the honor system, the, the group that gathers the most toys, which I'm thinking is gonna be over 1,000 toys, just one group, is, uh, gonna win a Moonlander Special Ops complete bike, size medium.
• 27:45
Um, second place is going to get a OneUp USA two bike hitch rack, totally sweet rack made in America, made right in Wisconsin. 'Merica. And, uh- Whoo...
• 27:54
another Wisconsin, Bontrager, is going to supply at least two tires and maybe some more stuff. We're still getting that all gelled. Uh, so it's gonna be a very, very good thing.
• 28:07
We're gonna collect a bunch of toys for needy kids, and we're gonna give away a bike, a rack, and some tires, and maybe some other stuff. Yeah, and if you're- It's gonna be cool...
• 28:16
if you're doing one of these events, be sure to give us a call on a Wednesday and tell us all about it. We'd love to hear where these things are happening and let more and more people know about it. Heck yeah.
• 28:25
Sven's working on one in Milwaukee. 300 drunk Santas all with one unwrapped toy, that's kinda like a... That's, that's a beautiful picture. That's America right there. 'Merica. Yeah, they kinda changed the- Yeah...
• 28:39
the, uh, Santa Rampage this year, so. I know. It's a Wisconsin, uh, Bike Fed thing, but we gotta get David Schabowski online with, with our, uh, with our Toys for Tots thing. Yeah. You down? I'm seeing him tomorrow, so.
• 28:52
Let it on. I will, uh, I will say what's up.
• 28:54
Well, what they changed for the event was that the Bike Fed is sponsoring a portion of it that's a ride from out in Wauwatosa, six miles down North Avenue to Lakefront Brewery, but they are not officially involved in the feeder portion of the ride at this time.
• 29:10
Oh. Um, they're going to be charging an entry fee. Had they have a really cool beanie hat that they're doing and the T-shirts and stuff, uh, to benefit, uh, uh, sure, the Bike Fed. Mm-hmm.
• 29:22
But, uh, you know, logistics of 700 plus Santas riding- [laughs]... around the city has become kind of a problem. [laughs] Yeah. It's, uh- It's, it's, it's grown to epic proportion.
• 29:34
I, I'm gonna be in Minneapolis, so, uh, I'm gonna just shout out to Grandpa Mark. I, I wanna go ride and cook sausages on the river, so if you're down for that, I'd be down for that. Cool. While I'm in town.
• 29:50
Yeah, I don't know. I think I'll be in town. I'm gonna go ahead, too. I think I'm staying here. I was thinking about going up to Manitowoc though, or to Traverse, so that's still up in the air.
• 29:59
Hey, you know what's happening tomorrow is the Fat La Ruta, the La Ruta de los Conquistadores. Down there in- The-... Costa Rica? Go from the Caribbean to the Pacific, the Atlantic to the Pacific. They go that direction?
• 30:14
I don't know. Well, they go from one side to the other side. Yeah. And then they could do a double La Ruta, turn it around. Double La Ruta. There's something like 14,000 feet of climbing in it if I remember right.
• 30:25
It's over a bunch of mountainous terrain and- [coughs]... past volcanoes and- Through rainforests and monkeys with bananas throwing them at you and stuff. [laughs] There you go.
• 30:36
Our friend Kathy Merchant we talked to- Katie Merchant, yeah... last week. Was it last week? Yeah. Yeah, sweet. She's on her way down there, if she's not already there. And I actually contacted Will, uh, Murky? I may...
• 30:47
I don't know how to... I always say [laughs] Will Muck. I don't know. Will from- When, when he's on the show, we'll ask him how to pronounce- Yeah... his name. Yeah, yeah.
• 30:56
Um, he was just too busy because it's the night before the big race starts, and that's a big deal, so, uh, we couldn't get him on, but we got Anthony on. He was a great guest. Hey, you know who we do have on? Who's that?
• 31:07
We still have Old Bear on the line. Old Bear. Awesome. Why don't we, uh, why don't we check in with Old Bear?
• 31:13
[laughs] He, maybe he called for a reason, and we keep cutting him off saying we got people to talk to, but, uh- Yeah, it, I'm just gonna take a wild stab- [laughs]...
• 31:21
and say Old Bear probably didn't call in about embrocation. No. [laughs] I don't know what embrocation is. It's when- That's why I'm listening, to learn something.
• 31:32
[laughs] I was hoping to learn something, but I talked to julio.com about embrocation, and apparently it's just something to, you know, like NFL players that have the bare arms- Yeah...
• 31:43
all the time, they put on something that seals up all your pores and, and this is what embrocation is, and some of it is warming, but- Oh... he said I would have to shave my legs, and that was the first thing.
• 31:56
I was like, "Well, that's a deal breaker. [laughs] I'm never shaving my legs again in my life. Uh-uh, not happening." Nope. I've, I've been there, done that, got the T-shirt, don't need to do it again. Yeah.
• 32:06
Been there, done that. Yeah, I don't need to be doing that. So, uh, you know, that's all I know about it. And the funny thing is, is we contacted all these companies and said, "Hey, we're interested.
• 32:18
Does, will this work for fat biking?" And [whistles] nothing. We got nothing back. Wind. Yeah. The wind blowing. So it must not work for fat biking. The wind blowing through and the tumbleweeds, right, guys? Yep, yep.
• 32:27
Good question, Gomez. [laughs] Say, uh, Old Bear, do you guys have any, uh, Global Fat Bike Day events planned down in your neck of the woods? There's only two of us that actually ride. We'll do something, though.
• 32:40
We'll go out and ride somewhere. Cool. Uh, there's not, there's not that many down here. I mean, there's an attitude that it's still down there that it's just a whim.
• 32:51
[laughs] They go, they, they see me every day out there on my bike, and they just don't get it, you know? But they'll get it when they see 25% of the market being chewed up by fat bikes. They'll get it. So. Yeah.
• 33:06
Yeah, like my friend, uh, Wade out there in Colorado always says, you know, "Just give them time." Yeah. "They'll come around." Yep. It's, it's, it's pretty amazing. But, uh, I, I plan on doing something. Well, cool.
• 33:19
Well, you should, uh, send- Because, uh-... us a postcard, a picture... if you guys ever get any used tires, used tires that you tested and you don't have any use for- Uh-huh... I'm on a fixed budget.
• 33:31
I'm trying to get a pair of tires. Really? [laughs] All right. Well, I think you might, you might be talking to the right guy here, because I happen to have fat stacks of tires- Fat stacks of tires...
• 33:43
over there at our test facility, so yeah, I... And you ride a Pug, right? No. No, no, no, no, no. I ride a Gravity Bullseye Monster. Gravity Bullseye Monster. It's- So can you run a- Yeah... a four-inch tire?
• 33:59
Yeah, that's what I have on there now. I have, uh, Mission Vs on there now, and they're, got bo- 1,200 miles on them. They're kinda wasted.
• 34:07
[laughs] We're gonna, we're gonna g- we're gonna send you an upgrade, and then you just have to call back- Okay... to the show and tell us, you know, tell us how bad they roll for you.
• 34:17
I have to give you my new address then, too, 'cause, uh, I'm not at the old address anymore. Oh, yeah, yeah. I'm at a new address. Oh, yeah.
• 34:23
If, if you just wanna tell it to us- Yeah, you said you, you- I'll, I'll just edit it out of the show...
• 34:27
you guys said you were gonna send me some, a couple patches to put on my coat so when people see it they see fatbike.com. Yep, we'll, we'll do that, too. Yeah, yeah.
• 34:36
We're good at telling people we're [laughs] sending them stuff. The execution is sometimes a little, uh, iffy.
• 34:41
But if you just wanna tell us your address right now, I'll just edit it out of the show, you don't, uh, so nobody hears what it is. Okay. That way I'll have it real handy. Got it. Yeah, I'll do. Yeah. Thanks. Okay.
• 34:50
I will, uh, I'll, I'll- Yeah... edit that out so you don't get a bunch of fan mail. [laughs] Okay. But we w- we had a guy, uh... You know, I do that post, uh, through Wade, my friend Wade.
• 35:03
He'll, could probably call in tonight if he remembers. But Wade, um, since I don't have internet here, I text him and he puts my posts on, on M- uh, MTBR, the fat bike forum. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
• 35:16
We have a thing called fat biking in hell. Oh, yeah, I know that thread. And the guy heard me mention it- And I know Wade, too... and read it. I haven't- Yeah, Wade's, Wade's super.
• 35:24
Yeah, uh, Wade comments on the site all the time. It's like, I think it's, it's, like, Wade Neville, Neville or some, something like that. Yeah. Have you, have you read my thread? Yeah. I've, I've read parts of it.
• 35:38
It's like- It's, uh... You know, I kn- and I know Wade is a- It's-... is a recovering cardiac arrest, uh, he had a heart attack and- He's just like me. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Right. He's just like me. Quite right.
• 35:48
Quite right. So- Yeah, but I tell you what, the, the, the weather down here's been super. Here, too. It really has. We had- Here, too. The last three days I've been riding my butt off.
• 36:00
[laughs] It's like, "No, I don't want... I know, I'm just gonna ride." I know. In Chicago it's been in the 70s. Oh, it's been so good. I know in Chicago it's been in the 70s. What's it been in Milwaukee?
• 36:09
'Cause that's, that's, that's a neat town. I like it. Just, it's- See, I have relatives still in Milwaukee. Yeah, yeah. Norwegians. It's, uh- You know?... it's just been tickling the 70s. So like it was 70 today.
• 36:22
Yeah, it was 71 here. It was 71 yesterday. Yeah. Uh, it's so perfect weather, and nice and windy, and there's no bugs except for the little ladybugs, but they bite. But no mosquitoes, you know? I gotta take some pills.
• 36:36
I'll be right back. I'll be- well, I won't be right back. I'll just hang on here. All right. Mm. Rock those meds. [laughs] Well, while Old Bear's doing that, we can talk about links a little bit. Yeah. The linkages.
• 36:51
I'm back. All right. Well, we're gonna roll into our links here, Old Bear. Okay. I gotta, I gotta, I gotta find the- I'll let you go then. All right, my man. We, uh,
• 37:05
we l- we love your- You, you forgot to mention, uh, the, the fat biking, the fat biking and health thing. That'd be a good link. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. We should do that. We, we cover everything on there. All right.
• 37:15
Not just hills. We'll add that to the links for sure. Yeah. So the, uh, Wade and Old Bear are, uh, on MTBR on this link, and you can, uh, you can learn more about those two cats, how fat biking kinda saved their lives.
• 37:30
It did save my life. There you go. All right, we'll talk to you again, Old Bear. Thanks for calling. All right, talk to you later. Thanks. See you, Old Bear. Bye-bye. Bye. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
• 37:45
Hey, welcome to the radio program. Who do we have on the line? This is Wade Neville, known as, uh, BansheeRune on the MTBR. All right.
• 37:55
Um, calling in to say, "Hey, I understand Fred the Old Bear has been k- uh, harassing you guys." [laughs] Yeah, he talked about your thread on, uh, on Mountain Beer over there. Yeah. Yeah, but, uh, gotta love it.
• 38:10
All us crips in one place. It's funny, what I've gotta do is have some, uh, jerseys made up with the handicap placard on them. [laughs] So what, what's your, what's your story?
• 38:21
Got a bad heart and- He's, he's told us about, uh, how fat biking has saved his life. How, what, what's the story behind you and, and fat bikes?
• 38:28
Well, you know, fat, uh, fat bikes are the only fat allowed in my diet right now per my cardiologist. Even the good fat? That's pretty awesome that they're- [laughs] You, you made the show stop for a second.
• 38:41
[laughs] Wait, no fat? [laughs] [coughs] I thought I restarted. We have a, we have an AED on hand for, uh, to restart the show, like now. [laughs] Oh, brothers.
• 38:59
So you're in, uh- Oh, boy... you're, you're out in Colorado, right? Yes, sir, up in the Glenwood Springs area. And what, what's the riding like? We got a little bit of snow today.
• 39:09
Uh, had a little dusting of s- of sloppy Sierra cement, and that got my, uh, my fat bike all excited. [laughs] So, yeah. Nice. I'm looking forward to seeing some snow on the ground here soon.
• 39:20
Sooner than later would be good. But it's been, it's been relatively warm here, so not gonna happen right away. But we're looking forward to some moisture coming through this week, and we'll see how it plays out.
• 39:34
Yeah, El Nino, man. You just don't know. Yeah, they, we keep blaming that Mexican, you know? And, like, I don't think it was the Mexican. Baby, the Mexican baby. Yeah. I mean, that's pretty, that's pretty good stuff.
• 39:49
Well, cool. So j- fill us in on the thread a little bit more. What do you guys talk about on the thread? What sort of, uh, I mean, the topic is- Well, it-... fat bikes and health, but what does that entail?
• 39:59
What, what that entails is, um, you know, those of us who have some kind of a health problem, whether it's joint problems, heart trouble, et cetera, um, you know, we kinda do our ride reports and how we're doing.
• 40:14
S- some people are using it to lose weight. Uh, Old Bear in particular has lost, oh, heavens, 100 pounds or better since he started- Mm-hmm. Cool...
• 40:22
with his fat bike, and there's several other people that have done the same. And, and, you know, it's, uh, talking about how it's improving our, our wellness and, and keeping us going.
• 40:33
And so yeah, it's, it's fantastic to, to participate in that now that I'm a heart patient as well as a kidney disease patient. So yeah, everything's falling apart. I'm, uh, my warranty's been up for a while, so [laughs]
• 40:47
go figure on that, right? [laughs] You've taken such, such, you know, sterling care of yourself I'm sure. If you're anything like me [laughs]— I have not been good to this body.
• 40:58
[laughs] You know, downhill and freeride has taken its toll on, on my joints and my back. Um, 1989 I ate it pretty good doing a downhill race, so, uh, exceeding somewhere between 65 and 75 miles an hour I went down.
• 41:16
Ay caramba. That doesn't sound fun. And I had a compression in- injury to my spine at that point, which is still there. I have a nice S bend just like a, uh, S bend seat, uh, seat stay. Like the old Schwinn Paramounts.
• 41:31
Like my spine. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, like, like a Banshee bike. [laughs] There you go. Cool. Well, we, we told Old Bear we'd put a link- Yeah...
• 41:38
to the thread in the, uh, in the show notes so people can, can find this and, and learn more about it. Yeah. It sounds like a- Oh, cool...
• 41:45
like a really nice support mechanism group, uh, where people can, uh, you know, uh, that can post their challenges and then, uh, get support from other dudes and, and other women that ride, and, yeah, then that's, that's, that's the internet right there.
• 42:03
That's the beautiful thing about the internet.
• 42:04
Well, that's the beauty of it is, you know, everybody in that thread has been really, really friendly and kind and, you know, no condescension there, and no, you know, it's not an ATR. Wait, wait, wait. This is on MTBR?
• 42:16
This is the, the... Wait. Yeah. Are we talking about MTBR? It's, uh, hey, look, it's not OTN. [laughs] It's not Observed Trials Network. [laughs] It's, it's MTBR. All right.
• 42:25
So yeah, there's some snarky threads out there, but, you know, and it's like [scoffs] it was, I forget what the hell one I just responded to and, like, you know, so, uh, "Who died and made you God's gift to the bicycle in the first place?"
• 42:38
Well, uh, I don't know who had that. [laughs] No, just kidding. [laughs] But, you know, whatever. Yeah. There are cool people and there are snarky people that are self-righteous and whatever. [laughs] Yep.
• 42:49
It takes all kinds to make the world go round. All right. Well, thanks for calling in. Well, Wade, thanks for calling. I know that we've traded some emails and whatnot, so way to get those digits down.
• 43:01
And, uh, it's cool that you and Fred have that, that thread going, so. We're all... We, we- Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah... back that 100%. Yep. Well, we've got another caller on the line. Well, I appreciate that.
• 43:11
We're gonna, we're gonna move right along here. Oh, yeah. All right. Wade, rock on, dude. Well, thanks for including me, and, uh, rock on, guys. All right. Thanks a lot. See y'all. Hey, welcome to the radio program. Hey.
• 43:23
Who do we have on the line? Hey. Hey. You know, that guy. Tupper Backer. Yeah, that guy. How you doing, gentlemen? How's it going? Hey, man. Hey, way to- You know... way to, like, way to get the, like...
• 43:39
Way to get Will Ross all inky. Uh, like, you say, "Oh, watch out, they have, like, bad stuff going on in the studio," but he was here back in June. That was just, like, a...
• 43:50
[laughs] So way to warn the guy six month later. He probably has- Nothing... the rash is probably just probably now coming in really bad. Just now clearing up. [laughs] Yeah. So- Poor guy... yeah. So what's new, chief?
• 44:05
You sent me some sweet pictures of, of our bags. That looks like a frame bag. Is it a frame bag, or is it a top two bag? No, that's the, the beer two bag. [laughs] Oh. Oh. Those are the down two bags.
• 44:17
Dude, you, you have- Yeah... revolutionized that. That, that could be your mark. Like, we're, we're gonna just call those Tupper- Well-... Tupper bags now. Not the... Not...
• 44:26
Yeah, 'cause I'm telling you, I haven't seen it anywhere else. John, you- No, no, it's... So, like, I, I totally can't take credit for it.
• 44:33
There's a, there's a company I saw, like, three years ago out of California that did them. Yeah. And I've made a couple. Yeah. But I released a photo, like, a month ago of my buddy Justin in Anchorage.
• 44:43
I, I made him one, I didn't even charge it for- Mm-hmm... charge him for it, and I was like, "Yeah, here. I don't know. I, I don't care. I'll make them." Not even some caribou meat or anything? Yeah.
• 44:52
But [laughs] nothing, nothing. Nothing. But, um, I'm, uh, I'm more of a fan of beaver meat. No pun intended. [laughs] But, so I, I, um- Every beaver shot must be eaten. [laughs] Yeah. So he sent, he sends- Small joke...
• 45:04
me pictures of this down two bag- It's tough... full of beer, and we give it the clever name of the 40 Below Bag 'cause it fits four cans- Ah... you know, which are, you know, roughly, like, 10, 12 ounces. Yeah. Yeah.
• 45:14
And then I buy the, the domain name beerpacking.com and say, "These bags will be available on beerpacking.com." And the next thing I know, the fricking internet is broken, and, uh, I didn't even do anything.
• 45:29
[laughs] So that's the story. Sweet. Well, that's how Tupper Backer- Yeah... made his first million dollars. Yeah. Yep, that's how Tupper went on to buy Google. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah.
• 45:39
[laughs] Dude, can I be, can I be, like, your pilot and fly you around in a Learjet and stuff? Y- yeah, I, I think, yeah.
• 45:48
You'd- Or maybe, maybe- I'd want to ride in the back of one of those toddler seats on a bicycle, and it'd just be me, you, and a Krampus. All right. Yeah. And a, and a, and a polar bear on a leash. Yeah.
• 46:00
I got a hankering for a polar bear- Binky... on a leash. Yeah. [laughs] Can we name him Stinky? That would be awesome. [laughs] No, Binky. Oh, Binky? It's gonna be Binky. All right. All right. Yeah.
• 46:09
I thought you said Stinky. I think that's the one they named at the zoo up here, like, the... in, in Anchorage that, like, like, bit off some guy's foot or something- Oh, yeah... or took his boot or something. Yeah.
• 46:18
I don't know. Ours is gonna be cool. But anyway. It's not gonna bite people. Yeah. It must be taught. Cool polar bears. [laughs] Of course. So yeah, when, when- So I'm gonna send you guys one of those bags...
• 46:29
when do we start giving these bags away, bro hams? I don't, I don't know. We'll, we'll, we'll confer and, and talk to, talk to the powers that be. Okay. We'll, we'll make up some kind of strategy and do the thing.
• 46:43
All right. But yeah, I'm gonna send those, those, those to you guys this week, and, uh, you guys can figure it out. You gotta call in next week and tell us the secret word, and you'll get a fabulous Surly prize package.
• 46:54
What's the secret word? Um, Gordon Lightfoot. Gordon Lightfoot. This is the second time I've heard the name Gordon Lightfoot today. I heard it in a podcast earlier. See? They were talking about him on Marc Maron.
• 47:07
Ah, hey, we're in, we're in the, the glorious company of Marc Maron. Yeah. He's playing live tonight- Oh, wow... at The Pabst Theater here in Milwaukee. Not Marc Maron, but Gordon Lightfoot. Gordon Lightfoot.
• 47:15
Gordon Lightfoot, yeah. Oh, wow. In Milwaukee. [laughs] And I've actually swam naked in Lake Kehe- He's got a huge, he's got a huge following of punk rock enthusiasts, you know that? Really? I was a punk rocker.
• 47:25
Yeah, like, it's the weirdest, like, subculture thing. Well, a New Waver. [laughs] Yeah, something. Yeah. The New Wave Caribou Reindeer Sausage Company. Yeah.
• 47:36
So why doesn't anyone name a fat bike the Muktuk, like whale fat? Like, they named it the Mukluk, but they didn't name it the Muktuk. Like, that's... Salsa's dropping the ball.
• 47:47
That's what I'm saying- That's America, dude... on naming their bikes. That's, that's the lower 48 people- Yeah... thinking that they know stuff. That's gonna be their new 2XL bike they're coming out with. Muktuk. Yeah.
• 47:57
Yeah. There we go. Oh, yeah. So we, we actually tried to fit one of those giant tires in one of their bikes, and it just barely fit, but- Really?... couldn't be ridden. Yeah, the Blackborow.
• 48:14
Oh, my, my wife just got a Blackborow today. No way. Nice. You have a wife? Yeah, she did. [laughs] Yeah, I know, right? [laughs] Dude, I thought you were a swinging single guy. No, no, this just recently happened.
• 48:28
Really? Yeah. You, you're keeping secrets from me, Alfred Gomez. [laughs] I'm that from the internet in, [laughs] in general. [laughs] Yikes. Tupper, is that so you could- Yeah.
• 48:39
Well, if you think about it- Is that so you-... people will probably think your name is really Gomez, you know? I know. So- Not anymore, 'cause- Yeah... Facebook straight- Not anymore... straight my ass out on that.
• 48:48
[laughs] I got my answer. Yeah. So I guess- Guess we all know what my real name is, Gary. Yeah, anyway. Garth. [laughs] Garth.
• 49:02
[laughs] Or, or what was his other name when it wasn't Garth Brooks? Oh. He had another name. Wayne. So Chris- I was thinking like Wayne and Garth... Chris Gaines. Oh. Chris Gaines. Oh, yeah.
• 49:13
Wayne and Garth and Chris Gaines. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. [laughs] I forgot about that album. He had like black Nemo or emo hair. He looked like a kid that wanted to kill himself or something. Yep. Yeah, I don't know.
• 49:24
That was him. Whatever. [laughs] Are we gonna talk about bike stuff, or are we just, just Do you know any-... just today? Do you know anything about embrocation or where I can find a cool polar bear?
• 49:33
[laughs] No, embrocation was the question. So you can embrocate the, the polar bear? I don't think that that... Maybe. Well, I don't think it'd stand for shaving its legs. Yeah. So. Yeah.
• 49:43
I don't think we're gonna shave the bear. [laughs] Have you seen a shaved bear? Google that image. Oh, oh, dude, I saw a shaved, a picture of a shaved raccoon. It, [laughs] it was the scariest thing ever.
• 49:55
It looked so, so... Oh, it was just wrong. It was just like... And it, it had the, like the little black things over its eyes, but otherwise it was just all white and nasty looking. Ugh. Yeah. Well, wow.
• 50:10
So keep your fur coat on. Yeah. So. The shaved, the shaved bear action's scary. That's like, like it, looking at it gives me the creeps. Well, now you're gonna have to, you're gonna have to Snapchat me that picture.
• 50:24
Oh, of course. [laughs] I know. Yeah, I will. [laughs] I got a, I got a, an email from Travis that said he's, he's making a trip up to see you at some point here.
• 50:35
Yeah, we, we, we emailed, and, uh, I gave, I gave Travis Gomez's cell phone number so he could send them pictures. [laughs] So look what our little show did. No, I didn't. I didn't give him your cell.
• 50:46
[laughs] Our little show launched a bromance from Anchorage to Fairbanks, Tupper- Yeah... and, uh, and Travis. The TNT dance machine. Yeah. And now- I know... you should add Jeff and Kevin. Yep.
• 51:03
And you guys should go for a ride- Yeah... with your iPhone, and then call us when you get good, good reception. And, uh, on a Wed- go for a Wednesday night ride.
• 51:14
It's always nighttime there pretty much, unless it's right at dawn or... I know. You know what, Kevin, Kevin doesn't ride with anybody other than Jeff Oatley. Really? Like, that's the only guy.
• 51:22
Like, I've ridden with Kevin once. We went for a four or five-mile ride around- Yeah... this friend of his house. Like- Yeah... I've known Kevin for seven or eight years now, and that's, we've only ridden together once.
• 51:34
Yeah, he only rides with the elite. Yep. Is that 'cause he's so fast? He, he's highfalutin. Yep. Yeah. Yep. He, he just gets bored with us 'cause we don't go fast, and he just does. Yeah. Well, you know- You know...
• 51:47
you can't blame him for that, kinda. I never, I never wanna get in the way- No, I know... of a fast guys going fast. Like, "Well, fine. See you later." [laughs] But we have trails that- Well, I'm, I'm going-...
• 51:57
kinda loop around, so you know. Yeah. It's not like you go 40 miles in one direction like those up there. Right. We, uh, we're going out on a cabin trip on the 15th. It's me and my friend Kat. Yeah.
• 52:10
And then her friend, which is Jeff Oatley's wife, Heather Bess. Uh-huh. And I'm curious to see, and kind of anxious, like to see how much my ass gets handed to me by Heather Bess. 'Cause
• 52:22
if you don't know Heather, she's, she's like 5'11" and she's all legs. Mm-hmm. And she can just hammer down.
• 52:27
Like, she doesn't weigh anything, so she's just gonna leave me in the dust, but I wanna see how bad I get left in the dust. But that should be a fun trip. Nice. So staying- Yeah... staying in cabins or making your own?
• 52:42
Yeah, there's the White Mountains up here. Mm-hmm. With, uh, where we have the race. It's a, a big, it's 100-mile loop or whatever loop you go on.
• 52:51
There's a bunch of trails, and there's all these BLM cabins, state-owned cabins or whatever, and you can rent them for 25 bucks for a night. Lucky.
• 52:59
And we're gonna ride 16 miles out there, and then spend the night, then come back. So- Man... bike in, bike out. Have some spam and tequila. Yeah. Um- Yeah. Tequila. Spam-quila. I don't know. [laughs] Flaming- Yeah.
• 53:15
Flaming spam with... [laughs] What is he doing? [laughs] Oh, dude. Uh, JK's just doing, just pan- Tequila... pantomiming the, the- Dun, dun, dun. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Dun, dun, dun, dun. Oh my God. You hear me?
• 53:33
It, it's the radio. Wrap it up. Wrap it up. It's the radio, and he's like doing this crazy dance thing. [laughs] I thought he was having a seizure.
• 53:43
So Tupper, thanks for calling in and, uh, completely destroying all the flow- Correct. Yeah... we had going, bro. You're the flow breaker. Yeah. I'm, well, I'm glad I could help mix things up. [laughs] Ben, email me.
• 53:55
We'll talk, we'll talk top tube bags- Right on... for your camera. Yeah. Super. Okay. All right. Talk to you soon. I won't, I won't waste any more of your time. Take care, gentlemen.
• 54:02
[laughs] Hey, don't sew your fingers together. I won't. All right. See you later. Thanks, Mom. [laughs] Thanks, Mom. Bye, Tupper. See you, Tupper.
• 54:12
Hi, this is Tim Bernson, and I've actually ridden fat bikes with Gomez up in Alaska. That guy sure calms down a lot. Anyway, when I'm not riding my fat bike Corvus, I listen to a weekly dose of fat on Fat Bike Radio.
• 54:26
New York City. [laughs] What do you wanna say about these here links? Well, this Meriwether Cycles link is kind of interesting. He, uh, is making a V tire 2XL bike
• 54:43
for Mike Kuriak, and it's an elevated chainstay design, which goes back to the, like, the first fat bike that he ever sent us pictures on with Travis Brown riding it, uh, was of an elevated chainstay design.
• 54:58
And, eh, you know, they tried it. The, the bottom brackets are always too-... flexible unless you overbuild it. I don't know if it's gonna work. Maybe this, maybe he's got a secret.
• 55:09
Maybe he's gonna ovalize the hell out of that mass that goes down to the bottom bracket or, I don't know what. But- Something, somehow. Yeah If it's going, if it's going to Mike Kuriak, it's gonna be- Yeah... you know?
• 55:22
Kuriak is, he's, he's a maestro. That, that dude has his act together. He's, he's a power to be reckoned with. Right. And stuff.
• 55:34
Uh, we talked a little bit about Joe Boo's, uh, Toys for Tots thing the day after Thanksgiving. We got a link to that one. I talked to Adam Blake today, who coincidentally always says, "If they have Tots, get the Tots."
• 55:50
[laughs] Uh, we talked about, uh, getting fat e-bikes and growing our hair into Dutch, like, page boys and [laughs] forming an internet gag.
• 56:03
[laughs] That was, that was my- It was- That was, when I was getting my hair cut, that was one of the looks I was gonna go for. [laughs] See? You know. Helmet hair. Yeah. And that was actually my idea.
• 56:14
Like Prince Valiant or whatever? He, he, he kinda shut me, shut me down pretty fast, but, you know. Or actually, he didn't. He was like, "Yeah, I got the whole, I got the inside track on e-bikes.
• 56:23
You need an e-bike, call me." I'm like, "No, we got one. We got the Surface 604." We're gonna get these- Yeah, I got-... haircuts- Close...
• 56:30
and [laughs] I'm gonna ride on the front basket, and Sven's gonna pedal, and JK's gonna ride on the rear rack. Yep. I got close to 200K on that thing now. No way. Yeah.
• 56:42
Yeah, it's a, I, I use it for, I use it around the city a lot. 200,000- Especially if a-... miles. [laughs] 200 kilometers. I- [laughs] I know you, I know you can switch it to miles.
• 56:52
I just haven't actually taken the time- Oh... to switch it to miles, so- That's all right... you know, 120 miles or whatever. But I'm using it mostly when, uh, i- it's just me and I'm going somewhere and- Mm-hmm...
• 57:01
you know, I'm not, it's not my group ride bike right now, but I like having it. It's very- And people know you now, is that, "There's the guy on the big green bike." [laughs] On the big green bike, yeah. Yeah.
• 57:11
Yeah, super. Mm-hmm. There's a gun mount? Yeah, we saw that one, Death Rider, up there in Minneapolis. Mm-hmm. He made the mount and he was out testing it with his boy and a buddy.
• 57:22
They were going out and hunting and- Squirrel, squirrel hunting? Something, some varmints or something. [laughs] But, uh, I don't think they saw any animals. No.
• 57:30
I think they just, uh, went for a ride and tested it, and he said it, it didn't knock his teeth out or anything, so. Oh, that's good. Yep. Bruce is up to his old tricks. Yeah, yeah. That guy gets out there a lot.
• 57:42
Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat. [laughs] Yeah. Hey, Rocky, Rocky makes a comeback. Right? Yeah. Rocky II. That's right. [laughs] That sounds like, uh, Mr. Hankey. [laughs] Hi-de-ho.
• 57:59
[laughs] Hey, fat bikes got mentioned by the New York Times. Again. Again. Remember when I was in there, like- Yeah, yeah... [laughs] four, five years ago now or whatever. Remember when I didn't talk to the press?
• 58:11
Yeah, I remember that. [laughs] Yeah. It, it, yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Waltworks had some thoughts about plus bikes. Plus bike link. He's a, he's a pioneer. Yeah, yeah.
• 58:25
If there were a 29er Hall of Fame, he'd be in there. He'd be, he'd be maybe the first bust. Within the top three busts. Anybody else on the line? Not this week.
