Foreign.
0:50
It's
0:51
around
0:51
the
0:51
house.
0:53
On
0:54
this
0:54
episode
0:54
of
0:55
around
0:55
the
0:55
house.
0:56
The
0:56
petroleum
0:57
products
0:57
that
0:57
make
0:57
up
0:57
the
0:58
shingle.
0:58
And
0:58
so
0:59
when
0:59
those
0:59
granules
1:00
start
1:00
to
1:00
come
1:00
off,
1:01
especially
1:01
due
1:02
to
1:02
foot
1:03
traffic
1:03
or
1:04
scraping
1:04
off,
1:05
whether
1:05
it's
1:05
organic
1:06
stuff
1:06
or
1:06
other
1:07
things,
1:07
like
1:07
even
1:07
snow
1:08
that
1:08
might
1:09
accumulate
1:09
during
1:09
severe
1:10
weather,
1:10
if
1:10
somebody's
1:11
going
1:11
up
1:11
there
1:11
and
1:11
shoveling
1:12
that
1:12
snow
1:12
off,
1:12
that
1:12
can
1:13
abrade
1:13
those,
1:14
those
1:14
granules
1:15
off
1:15
and
1:15
that
1:16
can
1:16
accelerate
1:17
how
1:17
the
1:17
roof
1:17
is
1:17
aging
1:18
and
1:18
diminish
1:19
its
1:19
performance.
1:20
Yeah,
1:20
you're
1:21
real,
1:21
it's
1:21
real
1:22
smart
1:22
to
1:22
be
1:22
thinking,
1:23
hey,
1:23
what
1:23
could
1:23
be
1:24
going
1:24
on
1:24
up
1:24
there?
1:25
And
1:25
how
1:25
do
1:25
I
1:25
make
1:26
sure
1:26
that
1:26
I
1:26
stay
1:26
on
1:26
top
1:27
of
1:27
that?
1:27
Now
1:27
that's
1:28
another
1:28
thing
1:28
that
1:28
we
1:28
haven't
1:29
talked
1:29
about
1:29
yet
1:29
that's
1:30
probably
1:30
good
1:30
for
1:30
folks
1:30
to
1:31
know.
1:31
If
1:31
you're
1:31
interested
1:32
and
1:32
you
1:32
decide
1:33
to
1:33
participate
1:33
in
1:33
Fortified,
1:34
we
1:34
issue
1:34
a
1:35
certificate
1:35
that
1:36
you
1:36
can
1:36
use
1:36
that
1:36
can
1:37
show.
1:37
When
1:37
it
1:37
comes
1:37
to
1:38
remodeling
1:39
or
1:39
renovating
1:39
your
1:40
home,
1:40
there
1:40
is
1:41
a
1:41
lot
1:41
to
1:41
know
1:42
and
1:42
we
1:42
have
1:42
got
1:42
you
1:43
covered.
1:45
This
1:46
is
1:46
AROUND
1:46
the
1:47
house.
1:47
Welcome
1:48
to
1:48
the
1:48
Round
1:48
the
1:48
House
1:49
show,
1:49
the
1:49
next
1:49
generation
1:50
of
1:50
home
1:51
improvement.
1:52
Thanks
1:52
for
1:52
joining
1:52
me
1:53
today.
1:53
This
1:53
hour
1:54
is
1:54
brought
1:54
to
1:54
you
1:54
by
1:54
our
1:55
friends
1:55
at
1:55
Monument
1:56
Grills.
1:56
If
1:56
you're
1:56
looking
1:57
for
1:57
that
1:57
brand
1:57
new
1:57
barbecue
1:58
this
1:58
spring,
1:59
don't
2:00
waste
2:00
that
2:00
time.
2:01
Just
2:01
jump
2:01
online,
2:02
head
2:02
over
2:02
to
2:02
monument
2:03
grills.com
2:03
and
2:04
take
2:04
a
2:04
look
2:04
at
2:04
the
2:04
latest
2:05
and
2:05
greatest
2:05
for
2:06
those
2:06
portable,
2:07
affordable
2:08
barbecue
2:09
grills.
2:09
Making
2:10
me
2:10
hungry
2:10
just
2:10
talking
2:11
about
2:11
it
2:11
today.
2:12
We
2:12
have
2:13
got
2:13
an
2:13
old
2:13
friend
2:13
back
2:14
in
2:14
the
2:14
house,
2:15
Fred
2:15
Malik,
2:15
managing
2:16
director
2:16
of
2:16
Fortified
2:17
with
2:18
the
2:18
Insurance
2:19
Institute
2:19
for
2:20
Business
2:20
and
2:20
Home
2:21
Safety.
2:21
Welcome
2:22
back
2:22
to
2:22
around
2:22
the
2:23
House
2:23
show,
2:23
my
2:23
friend.
2:24
Hey,
2:24
Eric,
2:24
thanks.
2:25
Glad
2:25
to
2:25
be
2:25
back,
2:25
bud.
2:26
Man,
2:27
I
2:27
have
2:27
seen
2:28
you
2:28
guys
2:28
all
2:29
over
2:29
design
2:29
and
2:29
construction
2:30
week.
2:30
It
2:30
was
2:31
great
2:31
to
2:31
see
2:31
your
2:31
presence
2:32
in
2:32
there
2:32
and
2:33
seeing
2:33
the
2:33
Fortified
2:34
program.
2:34
It's
2:35
so
2:35
important.
2:35
And
2:36
we've
2:36
had
2:36
some
2:37
big
2:37
things
2:37
in
2:37
California
2:38
happen
2:39
since
2:40
the
2:40
last
2:40
time
2:40
we
2:40
talked
2:41
and,
2:42
man,
2:42
absolutely
2:43
incredible.
2:44
And
2:45
there
2:45
is
2:46
so
2:46
much
2:46
going
2:46
on
2:46
in
2:46
the
2:47
world
2:47
out
2:47
there
2:47
with
2:47
insurance,
2:49
home
2:49
and
2:49
business
2:49
safety.
2:51
And
2:51
I
2:51
want
2:52
to
2:52
start
2:52
out
2:52
by
2:52
saying
2:52
it
2:53
was
2:53
pretty
2:53
amazing.
2:53
I
2:54
feel
2:54
bad
2:54
for
2:54
my
2:55
good
2:55
friend
2:56
David
2:56
Applebaum,
2:57
who
2:57
has
2:57
been
2:58
on
2:58
this
2:58
show
2:58
a
2:58
lot,
2:59
who
2:59
lost
3:00
his
3:00
place
3:01
down
3:01
in
3:02
Pacific
3:03
Palisades.
3:04
I've
3:04
been
3:04
to
3:04
his
3:04
house
3:05
and
3:05
the
3:05
crazy
3:05
part
3:06
is
3:06
I
3:07
stood
3:07
there
3:07
on
3:08
his
3:09
certified
3:09
deck
3:10
that
3:10
was
3:10
fire
3:11
rated
3:12
and
3:12
looked
3:12
up
3:13
and
3:13
went,
3:13
oh,
3:13
there's
3:14
no
3:14
way
3:14
this
3:14
could
3:14
get
3:15
hurt
3:15
down
3:15
here
3:15
next
3:15
to
3:15
the
3:16
beach
3:16
in
3:17
a
3:17
wildfire.
3:17
And
3:18
I
3:18
could
3:18
not
3:18
have
3:18
been
3:19
more
3:19
wrong.
3:20
Yeah,
3:20
wildfires
3:21
are
3:21
certainly
3:22
a
3:22
tricky
3:22
hazard
3:23
and
3:23
that
3:24
is
3:24
devastating
3:25
out
3:25
there
3:25
in
3:25
Los
3:26
Angeles,
3:26
we
3:26
do
3:26
a
3:27
lot
3:27
of
3:27
work
3:27
on
3:27
the
3:28
wildfire
3:28
prevention
3:29
and
3:29
understanding
3:30
the
3:30
mechanics
3:30
of
3:31
how
3:31
wildfires
3:32
move
3:33
in
3:33
those
3:33
really
3:34
heavily
3:34
populated
3:35
areas.
3:35
And
3:35
that
3:35
it
3:36
is
3:36
shocking
3:36
how
3:37
many
3:37
ways
3:37
fire
3:38
can
3:38
find
3:38
a
3:38
way
3:38
to
3:39
burn.
3:39
And
3:40
then
3:40
I
3:40
saw
3:41
it's
3:41
not
3:41
just
3:41
California.
3:42
What
3:42
was
3:42
that?
3:43
North
3:43
South
3:43
Carolina
3:44
this
3:44
last
3:44
week
3:45
or
3:45
two
3:45
that
3:46
I
3:46
saw
3:46
out
3:46
there
3:46
that
3:47
there
3:47
were
3:47
some
3:48
wildfires
3:48
getting
3:48
close
3:49
to
3:49
Myrtle
3:49
Beach.
3:49
That's
3:50
crazy
3:50
in
3:50
my
3:50
book.
3:51
Yeah,
3:51
it's,
3:52
it
3:52
really
3:53
does
3:53
underscore
3:54
the
3:54
fact
3:54
that
3:55
people
3:55
should
3:55
be
3:55
really
3:55
paying
3:56
attention
3:56
there.
3:57
There
3:57
really
3:57
aren't
3:58
very
3:58
many
3:58
places
3:58
in
3:59
the
3:59
United
3:59
States
3:59
that
4:00
aren't
4:00
subject
4:00
to
4:01
all
4:01
kinds
4:02
of
4:02
natural
4:02
hazards
4:03
and
4:03
severe
4:03
weather.
4:04
Gosh,
4:04
up
4:04
there
4:05
in
4:05
the
4:05
Pacific
4:05
Northwest,
4:06
you
4:06
guys
4:06
had
4:06
a
4:06
atmospheric
4:07
river
4:07
that
4:07
was
4:08
driving
4:09
hurricane
4:09
force
4:09
winds
4:10
and
4:10
torrential
4:11
downpours
4:11
a
4:11
couple
4:12
of
4:12
weeks
4:12
ago
4:12
too.
4:12
So
4:13
fire,
4:13
severe
4:14
wind,
4:14
water,
4:15
it's
4:15
all
4:15
there
4:15
and
4:15
it's
4:16
all
4:16
over
4:16
the
4:16
country.
4:17
Yeah,
4:17
it
4:18
really
4:18
is.
4:18
And
4:18
it
4:18
just
4:18
highlights
4:19
the
4:19
work
4:19
that
4:19
you
4:20
guys
4:20
are
4:20
doing
4:20
out
4:20
there.
4:21
And
4:21
we've
4:22
had
4:22
big
4:22
storms
4:22
here.
4:23
I've,
4:24
we've
4:24
talked
4:24
about
4:24
it
4:24
before
4:25
in
4:25
past
4:25
episodes.
4:26
I've
4:26
been
4:26
there
4:26
in
4:27
eastern
4:27
Washington
4:28
and
4:28
had
4:29
100
4:29
plus
4:30
mile
4:30
an
4:30
hour
4:30
winds.
4:31
And
4:31
I
4:31
was
4:31
in
4:31
my
4:31
apartment
4:32
complex
4:32
in
4:32
my
4:33
20s
4:33
and
4:33
I
4:33
watched
4:34
the
4:34
drywall
4:35
shear
4:35
diagonally
4:36
across
4:36
the
4:37
second
4:37
floor
4:37
of
4:37
my
4:37
apartment
4:38
and
4:38
I
4:38
went,
4:39
I'm
4:39
in
4:40
a
4:40
bad
4:40
spot
4:40
right
4:41
now.
4:42
But
4:42
that
4:42
was
4:42
scary.
4:43
Yeah.
4:44
When
4:44
I,
4:44
the
4:44
roof
4:45
came
4:45
off
4:45
and
4:45
then
4:46
when
4:46
I
4:46
saw
4:46
this
4:47
3,
4:47
8
4:48
crack
4:48
go
4:48
diagonally
4:49
across
4:49
about
4:49
a
4:49
20
4:50
foot
4:50
wall
4:51
from
4:51
the
4:51
top
4:51
right
4:51
to
4:52
the
4:52
bottom
4:52
left.
4:52
I'm
4:53
like,
4:53
oh
4:53
no,
4:54
I'm
4:54
in
4:54
a
4:55
bad
4:55
spot.
4:55
And
4:56
there
4:56
was
4:56
no
4:56
place
4:57
to
4:57
go
4:57
because
4:58
outside
4:58
was
4:58
even
4:59
worse.
4:59
And
4:59
we
4:59
just
5:00
went
5:00
into
5:00
the
5:00
bed,
5:01
into
5:01
the
5:02
bathroom
5:02
in
5:02
the
5:02
middle
5:02
and
5:03
rode
5:03
it
5:03
out
5:03
and
5:03
went
5:04
okay.
5:04
And
5:04
it
5:04
wasn't
5:04
like
5:05
it
5:05
was
5:05
a,
5:05
it
5:06
wasn't
5:06
a
5:06
hurricane,
5:06
it
5:06
wasn't
5:07
a,
5:07
it
5:07
wasn't
5:08
a
5:08
tornado.
5:08
It
5:08
was
5:09
a
5:09
four
5:09
hour
5:10
long
5:10
windstorm
5:10
that
5:10
just
5:11
went
5:11
and
5:12
might
5:12
as
5:12
well
5:12
been
5:12
a
5:13
hurricane
5:13
because
5:13
it
5:13
had
5:14
the
5:14
same
5:14
amount
5:14
of
5:14
damage.
5:15
Yeah.
5:16
We
5:16
try
5:16
to
5:16
put
5:16
a
5:16
lot
5:17
of
5:17
our
5:17
research
5:17
to
5:18
work
5:18
in
5:18
something
5:18
like
5:18
our
5:19
Thunderstorm
5:19
Ready
5:19
Guide
5:20
which
5:20
deals
5:21
with
5:21
severe
5:21
weather.
5:21
And
5:22
one
5:22
of
5:22
the
5:22
components
5:23
of
5:23
planning
5:24
for
5:24
that
5:24
thunderstorm
5:25
season
5:25
is
5:26
having
5:26
a
5:26
plan,
5:27
knowing
5:27
where
5:27
you're
5:27
going
5:28
to
5:28
go
5:28
and
5:29
how
5:29
to
5:29
stay
5:29
informed
5:30
so
5:30
that
5:30
if
5:31
you
5:31
have
5:31
the
5:31
opportunity,
5:31
you
5:32
can
5:32
get
5:32
to
5:32
a
5:32
safer
5:33
surroundings.
5:34
Yeah,
5:34
absolutely.
5:35
Let's
5:35
dial
5:36
it
5:36
back
5:36
here.
5:36
I
5:36
want
5:36
to
5:37
talk
5:37
a
5:37
little
5:37
bit
5:37
about,
5:37
because
5:38
we're
5:38
nationwide,
5:39
I
5:39
wanted
5:39
to
5:39
really
5:40
talk
5:40
about
5:40
what's
5:40
been
5:41
going
5:41
on
5:41
with
5:42
hurricane
5:42
safety.
5:43
We're
5:43
creeping
5:44
now
5:44
into
5:45
summertime,
5:45
which
5:46
means
5:46
we're
5:46
going
5:46
to
5:46
be
5:46
getting
5:46
into
5:47
that
5:47
hurricane
5:47
season
5:48
again.
5:49
And
5:49
really,
5:50
I
5:51
think
5:51
it's
5:51
one
5:51
of
5:51
those
5:51
things
5:51
that
5:51
we
5:52
need
5:52
to
5:52
think
5:52
about
5:52
because
5:52
so
5:53
many
5:53
places
5:53
in
5:53
the
5:53
country
5:54
go,
5:54
oh,
5:55
that's
5:55
just
5:55
a
5:55
south
5:56
kind
5:56
of
5:56
thing.
5:57
That's
5:57
just
5:57
a
5:57
Gulf
5:58
states,
5:58
east
5:59
coast,
5:59
Southern
5:59
east
6:00
coast.
6:00
But
6:01
really
6:01
those
6:01
same
6:01
weather
6:02
conditions
6:02
that
6:02
we
6:03
see
6:03
there
6:04
can
6:04
show
6:04
up
6:04
in
6:05
just
6:05
about
6:05
any
6:06
state
6:06
in
6:06
the
6:06
country.
6:07
When
6:07
you're
6:07
talking
6:08
about
6:08
massive
6:09
rain
6:09
event,
6:09
massive
6:10
wind
6:10
event,
6:10
we
6:11
throw
6:11
the
6:11
hurricane
6:12
thing
6:12
on
6:12
it.
6:12
But
6:13
it
6:13
could
6:13
be
6:13
a
6:13
bomb
6:13
cyclone
6:14
out
6:14
here
6:14
on
6:15
the
6:15
west
6:15
coast
6:15
or
6:15
it
6:15
could
6:16
be
6:16
some
6:17
massive
6:17
windstorm
6:18
cutting
6:18
across
6:18
the
6:18
Midwest.
6:19
Yeah,
6:20
there
6:20
were
6:20
19
6:21
severe
6:21
storms
6:22
in
6:22
2023
6:22
that
6:23
scattered
6:23
across
6:24
the
6:24
country
6:24
that
6:24
caused
6:25
$51.6
6:26
billion
6:27
in
6:28
damage.
6:28
Yeah,
6:29
it's
6:29
something
6:30
that
6:30
if
6:30
you
6:31
ignore
6:31
it
6:31
or
6:31
you
6:31
think
6:32
it's
6:32
local,
6:33
you're
6:33
really
6:33
putting
6:33
yourself
6:34
at
6:34
risk.
6:34
And
6:34
your.
6:36
So
6:36
let's
6:36
talk
6:36
about
6:37
the
6:37
fortified
6:37
program
6:38
again
6:38
here
6:38
and
6:38
what
6:38
you
6:39
guys
6:39
are
6:39
doing
6:39
with
6:39
that
6:40
because
6:40
I
6:40
think
6:40
it's
6:41
so
6:41
brilliant
6:41
because
6:42
I
6:43
can
6:43
have
6:43
a
6:43
wind
6:43
event
6:44
in
6:44
my
6:44
area
6:44
and
6:44
I
6:44
drive
6:45
around
6:45
and
6:45
I
6:45
can
6:45
really
6:46
see
6:46
go,
6:46
okay,
6:46
that
6:47
house
6:47
has
6:48
plywood
6:48
sub
6:49
sheeting
6:49
underneath
6:50
the
6:50
roofing.
6:51
That
6:51
one's
6:52
got
6:52
OSB
6:53
and
6:54
that
6:54
one's
6:55
got
6:56
wood
6:56
lap
6:57
up
6:57
there.
6:57
You
6:57
could
6:58
just
6:58
see
6:58
what's
6:58
going
6:59
on.
6:59
And
7:00
with
7:00
your
7:00
program,
7:00
it
7:01
really
7:01
gives
7:02
that
7:02
backup
7:03
when
7:04
maybe
7:04
the
7:04
winds
7:05
exceed
7:05
what
7:05
the
7:05
roofing
7:06
material
7:06
can
7:06
handle.
7:07
There's
7:07
still
7:07
a
7:08
backup
7:08
below
7:08
it
7:09
and
7:09
you're
7:10
much
7:10
more
7:10
likely
7:11
to
7:11
have
7:11
less
7:11
damage
7:12
with
7:12
that.
7:13
With
7:13
using
7:13
the
7:13
fortified
7:14
roofing
7:14
program.
7:15
Yeah.
7:15
And
7:15
I
7:16
think
7:16
the
7:16
important
7:16
thing
7:17
is
7:17
if
7:17
you're
7:17
going
7:17
to
7:18
invest
7:18
your
7:18
hard
7:19
earned
7:19
money.
7:19
We're
7:19
both
7:20
homeowners.
7:20
If
7:21
I'm
7:21
going
7:21
to
7:21
put
7:22
my
7:22
money
7:23
into
7:23
my
7:23
house,
7:23
I
7:24
want
7:24
to
7:24
make
7:24
sure
7:24
that
7:24
I'm
7:24
going
7:25
to
7:25
get
7:25
value
7:25
and
7:25
performance
7:26
from
7:26
that.
7:26
And
7:27
what
7:27
fortify
7:28
does
7:28
is
7:28
it
7:28
draws
7:29
on
7:29
the
7:29
decades
7:30
of
7:30
science
7:30
that
7:30
we've
7:31
done
7:31
here
7:31
at
7:31
ibhs,
7:32
really
7:32
studying
7:33
how
7:33
disaster
7:34
impact
7:34
the
7:35
house
7:35
as
7:35
a
7:35
complete
7:36
system.
7:36
And
7:37
one
7:37
of
7:37
the
7:37
things
7:37
that
7:38
we've
7:38
been
7:38
able
7:38
to
7:39
really
7:39
understand
7:39
is
7:40
what
7:40
is
7:40
the
7:40
pattern
7:41
of
7:41
damage
7:41
and
7:42
where
7:42
does
7:42
that
7:42
usually
7:43
start?
7:43
And
7:43
then
7:44
what
7:44
can
7:44
you
7:44
do
7:44
to
7:45
break
7:45
that
7:45
chain,
7:46
break
7:46
that
7:46
cycle
7:47
of
7:47
damage,
7:48
rebuild,
7:48
repeat.
7:49
And
7:50
so
7:50
in
7:50
the
7:50
fortified
7:51
program,
7:52
we
7:52
start
7:53
with
7:53
the
7:53
roof.
7:53
Every
7:54
one
7:54
of
7:54
the
7:55
70,000
7:55
plus
7:56
homes
7:56
that
7:56
live
7:56
under
7:57
fortified
7:57
roofs
7:58
in
7:58
the
7:58
United
7:59
States
7:59
starts
8:00
with
8:00
the
8:00
roof.
8:00
And
8:01
there
8:01
are
8:02
essentially
8:02
four
8:03
basic
8:03
phases
8:04
that
8:04
you
8:04
got
8:04
to
8:04
pay
8:04
attention
8:05
to.
8:05
It's
8:05
how
8:05
is
8:05
the
8:05
roof
8:06
deck
8:06
attached?
8:07
Do
8:07
you
8:07
have
8:08
a
8:08
system
8:08
that
8:08
seals
8:08
the
8:09
roof
8:09
deck
8:09
in
8:09
case
8:10
the
8:10
primary
8:10
cover
8:10
comes
8:11
off?
8:11
So
8:11
it's
8:11
a
8:11
belts
8:12
and
8:12
suspenders
8:12
approach.
8:13
How
8:14
do
8:14
we
8:14
make
8:14
sure
8:14
that
8:14
we're
8:15
protected
8:15
at
8:15
the
8:15
edges?
8:16
Because
8:16
when
8:16
the
8:16
wind
8:17
moves
8:18
around
8:18
the
8:18
roof,
8:19
it
8:19
exerts
8:19
the
8:19
highest
8:20
pressures
8:20
and
8:21
really
8:21
initiates
8:22
damage
8:22
frequently
8:23
at
8:23
the
8:23
edges.
8:24
So
8:24
that's
8:24
at
8:24
the
8:24
eave,
8:25
up
8:25
near
8:25
the
8:26
ridge,
8:26
at
8:26
the
8:26
top
8:26
of
8:26
the
8:27
peak
8:27
of
8:27
the
8:27
roof
8:27
or
8:28
along
8:28
the
8:28
rakes
8:29
if
8:29
you
8:29
have
8:29
a
8:29
gable
8:30
roof,
8:30
which
8:30
is
8:30
like
8:31
that
8:31
triangular
8:31
shape.
8:32
And
8:32
then
8:33
finally
8:33
we
8:33
look
8:34
at
8:34
the
8:34
roof
8:34
cover
8:34
itself.
8:35
So
8:35
like
8:35
you
8:35
said,
8:36
unfortunately
8:37
a
8:37
lot
8:37
of
8:38
that
8:38
ensured
8:38
damage
8:39
that
8:39
we
8:39
see
8:40
year
8:40
in
8:40
and
8:40
year
8:41
out
8:41
is
8:42
when
8:42
the
8:42
roof
8:43
cover
8:43
fails.
8:44
And
8:44
we
8:45
haven't
8:45
seen
8:45
that
8:46
many
8:46
design
8:46
level
8:47
events
8:47
in
8:47
the
8:47
United
8:48
States.
8:48
So
8:48
all
8:48
that
8:49
damage
8:49
is
8:49
happening
8:50
before
8:51
the
8:51
wind
8:51
speeds
8:52
get
8:52
to
8:52
the
8:52
design
8:53
level
8:53
of
8:53
the
8:53
material.
8:54
So
8:54
we
8:55
is
8:55
really
8:55
about
8:55
reinforcing
8:56
the
8:56
system.
8:56
And
8:57
that's
8:57
what
8:57
we
8:57
do
8:58
in
8:58
Fortified.
8:59
And
8:59
on
8:59
top
8:59
of
9:00
the
9:00
science,
9:01
Fortified
9:01
also
9:02
brings
9:02
the
9:02
verification
9:03
component,
9:03
which
9:03
you
9:04
and
9:04
I
9:04
talked
9:04
about
9:04
before
9:05
is
9:05
so
9:05
important
9:06
when
9:06
you,
9:06
you
9:07
can
9:07
have
9:07
the
9:07
best
9:07
standard
9:07
in
9:08
the
9:08
world,
9:08
but
9:08
if
9:08
you're
9:08
not
9:09
having
9:09
somebody
9:10
look
9:10
at
9:10
it
9:10
and
9:10
make
9:10
sure
9:11
that
9:11
standard's
9:11
being
9:11
followed,
9:12
you're
9:12
not
9:13
likely
9:13
to
9:13
get
9:13
the
9:14
results
9:14
you're
9:14
after.
9:15
Exactly.
9:16
And
9:16
it's
9:16
crazy.
9:17
I'm
9:17
in
9:17
Oregon
9:18
State
9:18
here
9:18
in
9:18
the
9:19
Portland,
9:19
Oregon
9:19
area
9:19
and
9:20
we
9:20
have
9:20
very
9:20
strict
9:20
building
9:21
codes.
9:22
Except
9:22
I
9:22
can
9:23
do
9:23
a
9:23
re
9:23
roof
9:23
of
9:23
that,
9:24
pulling
9:24
a
9:24
building
9:24
code
9:24
in
9:24
my
9:25
area.
9:25
So
9:25
there's
9:26
nobody
9:26
that
9:26
ever
9:26
goes
9:27
up
9:27
and
9:27
does
9:27
any
9:28
kind
9:28
of
9:28
an
9:28
inspection
9:29
whatsoever.
9:30
Now,
9:30
hopefully
9:31
the
9:31
project
9:31
manager,
9:32
the
9:32
roofing
9:32
company,
9:33
goes
9:33
up
9:33
and
9:33
takes
9:33
a
9:33
peek
9:34
at
9:34
it,
9:34
but
9:34
really
9:35
that's
9:35
all
9:35
you've
9:36
got.
9:36
And
9:37
with
9:37
our
9:37
wind
9:38
events
9:38
we
9:38
have
9:38
here,
9:39
and
9:39
I
9:39
know
9:39
there's
9:40
plenty
9:40
of
9:40
places
9:40
across
9:41
the
9:41
country
9:42
that
9:42
are
9:42
in
9:42
the
9:42
same
9:42
boat
9:43
that
9:43
there's
9:43
nobody
9:43
ever
9:43
on
9:44
that
9:44
roof
9:44
inspecting
9:45
it
9:45
other
9:45
than
9:45
the
9:45
people
9:46
to
9:46
put
9:46
the
9:46
roof
9:46
on.
9:47
It's
9:47
nice
9:48
to
9:48
have
9:48
that
9:48
verification
9:49
from
9:49
start
9:50
to
9:50
finish
9:50
on
9:51
it.
9:51
From
9:51
nailing
9:52
patterns
9:52
all
9:53
the
9:53
way
9:53
up
9:53
to
9:54
did
9:54
you
9:54
get
9:54
the
9:54
drip
9:54
edges
9:55
right
9:55
and
9:55
did
9:56
you
9:56
use
9:56
the
9:56
right
9:56
materials
9:57
on
9:57
the
9:57
project?
9:58
Yeah.
9:58
So
9:58
we
9:59
work
9:59
with
9:59
a
10:00
network
10:00
of
10:00
third
10:01
party
10:01
evaluators
10:01
that
10:02
can
10:02
come
10:02
and
10:02
take
10:03
training
10:03
from
10:03
us.
10:03
And
10:04
we
10:04
certify
10:04
them
10:05
to
10:05
be
10:05
documentation
10:06
specialists.
10:07
They
10:07
are
10:07
going
10:07
to
10:07
collect
10:08
documentation,
10:08
work
10:09
alongside
10:09
the
10:09
roofer
10:10
on
10:11
the
10:11
homeowner's
10:11
behalf.
10:12
So
10:13
when
10:13
the
10:14
project
10:14
gets
10:15
started,
10:15
the
10:15
evaluator
10:16
and
10:16
the
10:16
roofer,
10:16
they
10:17
talk,
10:17
they
10:17
connect
10:17
about
10:18
the
10:18
critical
10:18
path.
10:18
Because
10:19
the
10:19
last
10:19
thing
10:19
we
10:19
want
10:19
to
10:19
do
10:20
is
10:20
particularly
10:21
on
10:21
an
10:21
existing
10:21
home
10:22
that's
10:22
being
10:22
reroofed.
10:23
We
10:23
don't
10:23
want
10:23
to
10:23
tear
10:23
that
10:24
roof
10:24
apart
10:24
and
10:25
then
10:25
have
10:25
it
10:25
be
10:26
delayed
10:27
getting
10:27
it
10:27
dried
10:28
back
10:28
in
10:28
and
10:28
stuff
10:29
around
10:29
the
10:29
house.
10:29
We're
10:29
right
10:29
back
10:30
with
10:30
more
10:30
from
10:30

10:31

10:34
Let's
10:34
get
10:35
your
10:35
home
10:35
ready.
10:36
We'll
10:36
be
10:36
right
10:36
back.
12:16
The
12:16
kids
12:17
these
12:17
days
12:18
will
12:18
never
12:19
understand.
12:22
What
12:22
it's
12:22
like
12:23
to
12:23
play
12:24
an
12:24
instrument,
12:25
to
12:26
be
12:26
in
12:26
a
12:27
band.
12:28
What's
12:28
up?
12:28
This
12:28
is
12:28
Sticks
12:29
it
12:29

12:32
And
12:32
you
12:33
are
12:33
listening
12:33
to
12:34
around
12:34

12:36

12:37
we

12:38

12:39
And
12:39
you
12:39
should,
12:40
too.

12:44
Welcome

12:56
This
12:56

12:57
is
12:57

13:01

13:01
take
13:01
a
13:01
look
13:02
at
13:02
the
13:02
new
13:02

13:04

13:05
And
13:05
take
13:06
a
13:06
look
13:06
at
13:06
the
13:06
new
13:06
Smart
13:07
MNS
13:07
and
13:07
series.
13:08
This
13:08
will
13:08
tell
13:08
you
13:09
how
13:09
much
13:09
propane
13:09
you
13:10
have
13:10
left
13:10
and
13:10
how
13:11
to
13:11
cook
13:11
that
13:11
meat.
13:12
How
13:12
cool
13:12
is
13:13
that?
13:13
Now
13:14
let's
13:14
get
13:14
back
13:14
to
13:14
our
13:14
conversation
13:15
with
13:15
Fred
13:16
Malik
13:16
from
13:16
the
13:16
Insurance
13:17
Institute
13:17
for
13:17
Business
13:18
and
13:18
Home
13:18
Safety.
13:19
This
13:19
is
13:19
a
13:19
great
13:20
conversation,
13:20
waiting
13:21
for.
13:21
Documentation
13:21
to
13:22
occur
13:22
and
13:22
stuff.
13:22
So
13:22
the
13:23
roofing
13:23
contractor
13:23
and
13:24
the
13:24
evaluator,
13:25
they
13:25
connect,
13:26
they
13:27
share
13:27
scheduling
13:28
information
13:28
so
13:28
that
13:28
the
13:29
evaluator
13:29
can
13:29
be
13:29
on,
13:30
on
13:31
site
13:31
when
13:31
needed,
13:32
but
13:32
also
13:33
they
13:33
can
13:33
give
13:33
some
13:33
direction
13:34
to
13:34
the
13:34
roofing
13:34
contractor
13:35
on
13:35
what
13:35
pictures
13:36
and
13:36
other
13:36
documentation
13:37
they
13:37
might
13:38
need
13:38
to
13:38
collect
13:38
when
13:38
the
13:39
evaluator
13:39
isn't
13:40
there.
13:40
Now
13:41
and
13:41
one
13:41
of
13:41
the
13:41
things
13:41
that
13:42
really
13:42
should
13:42
do
13:42
for
13:43
homeowners
13:43
that
13:43
participate
13:44
in
13:44
Fortified
13:45
is
13:45
give
13:45
them
13:46
confidence.
13:47
Most
13:47
of
13:47
the
13:47
folks
13:48
that
13:48
we
13:48
deal
13:48
with,
13:49
tens
13:49
of
13:49
thousands
13:50
each
13:50
year,
13:50
they
13:51
aren't
13:51
roofing
13:51
contractors.
13:52
They're
13:52
not,
13:52
they're
13:53
not
13:53
tradesmen.
13:54
They're
13:55
typical
13:55
homeowners
13:55
who
13:56
don't
13:56
really
13:56
know
13:56
much
13:56
and
13:56
they're
13:57
relying
13:57
100%
13:58
on
13:58
the
13:58
roofing
13:59
contractor
13:59
to
14:00
do
14:00
their
14:00
job.
14:00
And
14:01
while
14:01
roofing
14:01
contractors
14:02
as
14:02
a
14:02
trade,
14:03
most
14:04
of
14:04
them
14:04
are
14:04
very
14:05
reliable
14:05
and
14:06
conscientious.
14:07
It
14:07
never
14:07
hurts
14:08
to
14:08
have
14:08
somebody
14:09
who's
14:09
really
14:10
their
14:10
only
14:10
motivation
14:11
is
14:11
to
14:11
make
14:11
sure
14:11
that
14:12
you're
14:12
getting
14:12
what
14:12
you
14:13
paid
14:13
for.
14:14
They're
14:14
following
14:14
behind
14:15
just
14:15
to
14:15
make
14:15
sure
14:15
that
14:16
everything's
14:16
going
14:16
on
14:16
the
14:16
way
14:17
it
14:17
should.
14:18
Yeah,
14:18
that
14:18
makes
14:18
perfectly
14:19
good
14:19
sense.
14:20
And
14:20
there's
14:21
so
14:21
many
14:21
details
14:22
in
14:22
doing
14:22
these
14:22
projects
14:23
right.
14:23
So
14:23
many
14:23
times
14:23
we'll
14:24
have
14:24
a
14:24
wind
14:24
event
14:24
around
14:25
here
14:25
and
14:25
I'll
14:25
go
14:25
by
14:25
and
14:25
I
14:26
know
14:26
exactly
14:26
what's
14:26
roof
14:26
on
14:27
a
14:27
neighbor's
14:27
house,
14:27
what
14:28
roof
14:28
is
14:28
on
14:28
that
14:28
house.
14:29
And
14:29
you
14:29
go,
14:30
wow,
14:30
that
14:30
did
14:31
not
14:31
perform
14:31
to
14:32
the
14:32
standards
14:32
that
14:33
they
14:33
are
14:33
rated
14:33
at.
14:34
Which
14:34
tells
14:34
me
14:35
one
14:35
thing,
14:35
that
14:36
there
14:36
was
14:36
an
14:36
installation
14:37
error
14:37
or
14:38
mistake
14:38
that
14:38
happened
14:38
in
14:39
there
14:39
someplace
14:39
because
14:40
otherwise
14:41
that
14:41
roof
14:42
wouldn't
14:42
have
14:42
blown
14:42
off
14:42
or
14:43
they
14:43
wouldn't
14:43
have
14:43
lost
14:44
a
14:44
square
14:44
of
14:44
shingles
14:45
off
14:45
the
14:45
side
14:45
of
14:46
that
14:46
thing.
14:46
And
14:47
so
14:47
you
14:47
really
14:48
look
14:48
and
14:48
go,
14:48
wow,
14:49
obviously
14:50
somebody
14:50
missed
14:51
a
14:51
nailing
14:51
pattern.
14:52
Something
14:52
happened
14:53
there
14:53
for
14:54
that
14:54
to
14:54
fail.
14:54
And
14:55
you
14:55
guys
14:55
really
14:56
are
14:56
going
14:56
to
14:56
be
14:56
able
14:56
to
14:57
check
14:57
that
14:57
out
14:57
with
14:57
that
14:58
program,
14:58
which
14:58
I
14:58
think
14:59
is
14:59
awesome.
14:59
Yeah.
15:00
So
15:00
we
15:00
do
15:00
pay
15:00
attention
15:01
to
15:01
installation,
15:01
that's
15:02
for
15:02
sure.
15:02
But
15:02
one
15:02
of
15:02
the
15:03
other
15:03
really
15:04
comprehensive
15:04
lines
15:05
of
15:05
research
15:05
that
15:05
we're
15:06
doing
15:06
here
15:06
at
15:06
IBHS
15:07
is
15:08
called
15:08
the
15:08
roofing
15:09
roadmaps.
15:09
And
15:09
we
15:10
look
15:10
at
15:10
how
15:10
different
15:11
roofing
15:11
materials
15:12
age
15:13
over
15:13
time
15:14
and
15:14
how
15:14
it
15:15
reacts
15:16
and
15:16
weathers
15:17
to
15:17
weather
15:17
conditions
15:18
in
15:18
a
15:18
variety
15:18
of
15:19
different
15:19
ways,
15:19
whether
15:19
it's
15:20
cold,
15:20
heat,
15:21
excessive
15:22
uv,
15:23
that
15:23
kind
15:23
of
15:23
stuff.
15:23
Because
15:24
that
15:24
roof,
15:24
even
15:25
though
15:25
most
15:25
of
15:25
us
15:25
aren't
15:25
getting
15:26
up
15:26
there
15:26
every
15:26
day,
15:27
it's
15:27
a
15:27
pretty
15:27
harsh
15:28
environment
15:28
and
15:28
materials
15:29
do
15:29
age
15:30
and
15:30
as
15:30
they
15:30
age,
15:31
their
15:32
performance
15:32
can,
15:33
can
15:33
start
15:33
to
15:34
suffer
15:34
even
15:35
if
15:35
they're
15:35
installed.
15:36
Well,
15:36
we
15:37
pay
15:37
attention
15:37
to
15:37
both.
15:38
What,
15:38
what
15:38
is
15:39
the
15:39
material
15:39
that's
15:39
going
15:39
on
15:39
there?
15:40
Does
15:40
it
15:40
have
15:40
the
15:40
proper
15:40
wind
15:41
ratings?
15:41
In
15:42
places
15:42
that
15:43
experience
15:43
hail,
15:44
there's
15:44
an
15:44
option
15:44
for
15:45
a
15:45
hail,
15:45
a
15:45
hail
15:46
designation
15:47
as
15:47
part
15:47
of
15:47
the
15:47
fortified
15:48
program.
15:49
So
15:49
we're
15:49
looking
15:49
at
15:49
the
15:50
impact
15:50
resistance
15:50
of
15:51
the
15:51
material
15:51
that's
15:51
going
15:51
on
15:51
the
15:52
roof.
15:52
And
15:53
then
15:53
we're
15:53
also,
15:53
like
15:54
I
15:54
said,
15:54
trying
15:55
to
15:55
make
15:55
sure
15:55
that
15:55
there's
15:55
a
15:55
belts
15:56
and
15:56
suspenders
15:56
because
15:57
at
15:57
some
15:57
point
15:58
the
15:58
roof
15:58
cover
15:59
is
16:00
going
16:00
to
16:00
reach
16:00
the
16:00
end
16:00
of
16:01
its
16:01
usable
16:01
life
16:02
and
16:02
it's
16:02
going
16:02
to,
16:02
it's
16:03
going
16:03
to
16:03
fail
16:03
under
16:04
certain
16:04
conditions.
16:05
And
16:05
a
16:05
lot
16:05
of
16:06
times
16:06
code
16:06
compliant
16:07
roofs
16:08
have
16:08
underlayment
16:09
that's
16:09
just
16:09
barely
16:10
tacked
16:10
on
16:10
there.
16:10
And
16:11
when
16:11
that
16:11
underlayment
16:11
comes
16:12
off,
16:12
it
16:13
opens
16:13
up
16:14
all
16:14
those
16:14
pathways
16:15
with
16:15
those
16:15
little
16:16
seams
16:16
are
16:17
between
16:17
those
16:17
roof
16:17
decking
16:18
boards
16:18
and
16:19
that
16:19
just
16:20
become
16:20
highways
16:20
for
16:21
water
16:21
to
16:21
enter
16:21
the
16:21
house.
16:22
We
16:22
can
16:23
limit
16:23
that
16:23
by
16:23
having
16:24
a
16:24
sealed
16:24
roof
16:24
deck
16:25
up
16:25
there.
16:25
Then
16:26
we
16:26
can
16:26
make
16:26
sure
16:27
that
16:27
the
16:27
occupants
16:27
and
16:28
their
16:28
property
16:29
are
16:29
protected,
16:29
they
16:30
can
16:30
get
16:30
back
16:30
to
16:30
normal
16:31
faster
16:31
and
16:32
just
16:32
concentrate
16:33
on
16:33
repairing,
16:34
replacing
16:34
the
16:34
roof
16:35
that
16:35
got
16:35
damaged.
16:36
So
16:36
it's
16:36
all
16:37
about
16:37
really
16:37
limiting
16:38
damage,
16:39
not
16:39
necessarily
16:39
making
16:40
something
16:40
disaster
16:41
proof.
16:41
Yeah,
16:42
disaster
16:42
proofs
16:43
are
16:43
pretty
16:43
hard
16:43
thing,
16:43
especially
16:44
when
16:44
your
16:44
neighbor's
16:45
trampoline
16:45
and
16:45
the
16:45
wind
16:46
event
16:46
comes
16:46
and
16:46
bounces
16:47
off
16:47
your
16:47
house.
16:47
It's
16:48
one
16:48
of
16:48
those
16:48
things
16:48
that
16:49
you're
16:49
just
16:49
dealing
16:50
with
16:50
whatever
16:50
gets
16:50
thrown
16:51
at
16:51
it.
16:51
But
16:51
it's
16:51
an
16:52
amazing
16:52
thing
16:52
because
16:52
you're
16:53
right
16:53
about
16:53
that.
16:53
Where,
16:54
because
16:55
somebody
16:55
in
16:56
Texas
16:56
is
16:56
going
16:57
to
16:57
have
16:57
hail
16:57
and
16:58
UV
16:58
damage.
16:59
Where
17:00
in
17:00
the
17:00
Pacific
17:00
Northwest
17:01
a
17:01
lot
17:01
of
17:01
our
17:01
stuff
17:02
is
17:03
organic
17:03
matter
17:04
growing
17:04
like
17:04
moss
17:05
and
17:05
stuff
17:05
on
17:05
the
17:05
roof
17:05
and
17:06
people
17:06
getting
17:06
up
17:06
there
17:06
every
17:07
six
17:07
months,
17:07
walking
17:08
across
17:08
and
17:09
cleaning
17:09
that
17:09
stuff
17:09
off.
17:10
So
17:10
it's
17:10
a
17:10
completely
17:11
different
17:11
wear
17:11
cycle
17:12
and
17:13
it's
17:13
getting
17:13
beat
17:13
up
17:14
two
17:14
different
17:14
directions.
17:15
Yeah.
17:15
And
17:15
70%
17:16
of
17:16
the
17:16
roofs
17:16
in
17:16
the
17:17
US
17:17
are
17:18
covered
17:18
with
17:18
asphalt
17:19
shingles.
17:19
And
17:20
asphalt
17:20
depends
17:21
on
17:21
granules
17:22
to
17:22
protect
17:23
the
17:23
petroleum
17:24
products
17:24
that
17:24
make
17:24
up
17:24
the
17:25
shingle.
17:25
And
17:25
so
17:25
when
17:26
those
17:26
granules
17:27
start
17:27
to
17:27
come
17:27
off,
17:28
especially
17:28
due
17:29
to
17:29
foot
17:30
traffic
17:30
or
17:30
scraping
17:31
off,
17:32
whether
17:32
it's
17:32
organic
17:32
stuff
17:33
or
17:33
other
17:34
things
17:34
like
17:34
even
17:34
snow
17:35
that
17:35
might
17:36
accumulate
17:36
during
17:36
severe
17:37
weather,
17:37
if
17:37
somebody's
17:38
going
17:38
up
17:38
there
17:38
and
17:38
shoveling
17:39
that
17:39
snow
17:39
off,
17:39
that
17:39
can
17:40
abrade
17:40
those,
17:41
those
17:41
granules
17:42
off
17:42
and
17:42
that
17:42
can
17:43
accelerate
17:44
how
17:44
the
17:44
roof
17:44
is
17:44
aging
17:45
and
17:45
diminish
17:46
its
17:46
performance.
17:47
Yeah,
17:47
you're
17:48
real,
17:48
it's
17:48
real
17:49
smart
17:49
to
17:49
be
17:49
thinking,
17:50
hey,
17:50
what
17:50
could
17:50
be
17:51
going
17:51
on
17:51
up
17:51
there?
17:51
And
17:52
how
17:52
do
17:52
I
17:52
make
17:53
sure
17:53
that
17:53
I
17:53
stay
17:53
on
17:54
top
17:54
of
17:54
that?
17:54
Now
17:54
that's
17:55
another
17:55
thing
17:55
that
17:55
we
17:55
haven't
17:56
talked
17:56
about
17:56
yet
17:56
that's
17:57
probably
17:57
good
17:57
for
17:57
folks
17:57
to
17:58
know.
17:58
If
17:58
you're
17:58
interested
17:59
and
17:59
you
17:59
decide
18:00
to
18:00
participate
18:00
in
18:00
Fortified,
18:01
we
18:02
issue
18:02
a
18:02
certificate
18:03
that
18:03
you
18:03
can
18:04
use
18:04
that
18:04
can
18:04
show
18:05
prospective
18:05
buyers
18:05
that
18:06
you've
18:06
taken
18:06
some
18:07
additional
18:07
precautions.
18:07
It
18:08
can
18:08
be
18:08
used
18:08
to
18:09
show
18:09
your
18:10
insurer
18:10
that
18:10
you're
18:11
a
18:11
better,
18:11
your
18:11
home
18:11
is
18:12
a
18:12
better
18:12
risk
18:12
to
18:12
insure,
18:13
which
18:13
can
18:13
increase
18:14
availability
18:15
and
18:15
affordability
18:16
of
18:16
insurance.
18:17
But
18:17
one
18:17
of
18:17
the
18:18
other
18:18
components
18:18
of
18:18
the
18:18
process
18:19
is
18:19
that
18:21
we
18:21
do
18:21
require
18:22
the
18:22
home
18:23
get
18:23
re
18:23
evaluated
18:24
every
18:24
five
18:25
years.
18:25
And
18:25
the
18:25
primary
18:26
thing
18:26
that
18:26
we're
18:26
looking
18:27
for
18:27
when
18:27
we
18:27
go
18:28
back
18:28
at
18:28
that
18:29
five
18:29
year
18:29
interval
18:30
is
18:30
what
18:31
is
18:31
the
18:31
roof
18:31
covers
18:32
condition.
18:32
If
18:33
it's
18:33
still
18:33
in
18:33
good
18:33
condition,
18:34
chances
18:34
are
18:35
the
18:35
redesignation
18:36
happens
18:36
without
18:36
a
18:36
hitch.
18:37
But
18:37
if
18:37
there
18:37
are
18:38
issues
18:38
that
18:38
are
18:38
starting
18:38
to
18:39
creep
18:39
up,
18:39
that's
18:39
a
18:39
great
18:40
time
18:40
for
18:40
us
18:40
to
18:40
be
18:40
able
18:40
to
18:40
inform
18:41
the
18:41
homeowner
18:41
that
18:42
hey,
18:42
there's
18:42
something
18:43
going
18:43
on
18:43
here
18:43
that
18:43
you
18:43
need
18:43
to
18:44
pay
18:44
attention
18:44
to
18:44
and
18:45
you
18:45
need
18:45
to
18:45
address
18:46
it
18:46
so
18:46
that
18:46
you
18:47
can
18:47
keep
18:47
counting
18:48
on
18:48
that
18:48
roof
18:48
to
18:48
deliver
18:48
the
18:49
protection
18:49
that
18:49
you
18:49
expect.
18:50
Man,
18:51
that
18:51
is
18:51
great.
18:51
Because
18:52
roof
18:52
maintenance
18:53
is
18:53
probably
18:53
one
18:53
of
18:53
the
18:54
least
18:54
things
18:55
done
18:55
on
18:55
a
18:55
house
18:55
these
18:56
days.
18:56
If
18:56
it
18:57
wasn't
18:57
for
18:57
insurance
18:58
companies
18:58
sending
18:58
out
18:59
nasty
19:00
grams
19:00
from
19:00
the
19:01
from
19:01
satellites
19:02
or
19:02
drones
19:03
around
19:03
saying,
19:03
hey,
19:04
you
19:04
got
19:04
a
19:04
lot
19:04
of
19:04
organic
19:05
matter
19:05
on
19:05
that
19:05
roof.
19:06
You
19:06
better
19:06
get
19:06
cleaned
19:06
up.
19:07
And
19:07
I
19:07
get
19:07
it
19:07
because
19:07
they're
19:08
trying
19:08
to
19:08
reduce
19:08
their
19:08
risk.
19:09
Nothing
19:10
wrong
19:10
with
19:10
them
19:10
doing
19:11
that.
19:11
But
19:11
I've
19:11
had
19:11
plenty
19:12
of
19:12
people
19:12
reach
19:12
out
19:12
to
19:13
me
19:13
on
19:13
social
19:13
media
19:13
and
19:14
go,
19:14
hey,
19:14
my
19:15
insurance
19:15
company's
19:16
doing
19:16
that.
19:16
I'm
19:16
like,
19:16
guess
19:17
what,
19:17
guys,
19:17
you're
19:18
missing
19:18
maintenance
19:18
day.
19:19
And
19:19
it's
19:20
a
19:20
better
19:20
investment
19:21
for
19:21
you
19:21
to
19:21
be
19:21
doing
19:21
that
19:22
anyway.
19:22
They're
19:22
just
19:22
giving
19:22
you
19:22
a
19:23
helpful
19:23
reminder
19:23
that,
19:23
hey,
19:24
that's
19:24
a
19:24
fire
19:24
hazard
19:25
or
19:25
it
19:25
could
19:25
be
19:26
additional
19:26
roof
19:27
damage
19:27
and
19:28
get
19:28
up
19:28
there
19:28
and
19:28
maintain
19:29
it.
19:29
I
19:29
recommend
19:30
that
19:30
people
19:30
have
19:30
their
19:31
roofing
19:31
contractor
19:31
come
19:32
out
19:32
there
19:32
every
19:33
year
19:33
or
19:33
two
19:33
and
19:33
take
19:33
a
19:34
peek
19:34
at
19:34
it
19:34
and
19:34
make
19:34
sure
19:34
that
19:35
things
19:35
are
19:35
looking
19:35
good.
19:36
Because
19:36
most
19:37
people
19:37
don't
19:37
get
19:37
up
19:38
and
19:38
go
19:38
poking
19:38
around
19:39
and
19:39
see
19:39
how
19:39
their
19:39
roof
19:40
looks.
19:40
Yeah.
19:41
In
19:41
our
19:41
Thunderstorm
19:42
Ready
19:42
Guide,
19:43
that's
19:43
a.
19:43
It's
19:43
a
19:43
free
19:44
guide
19:44
for
19:45
preparing
19:45
for
19:45
severe
19:46
weather
19:47
season.
19:47
It's
19:48
available
19:48
on
19:48
ibhs.org
19:50
part
19:50
of
19:50
that
19:50
plan
19:51
says,
19:51
hey,
19:51
there's
19:51
a.
19:52
There's
19:52
some
19:52
annual
19:52
things
19:53
you
19:53
should
19:53
do.
19:53
And
19:53
if
19:54
you
19:54
break
19:54
down
19:54
some
19:55
of
19:55
these
19:55
maintenance
19:55
tasks
19:56
into
19:57
annual
19:57
things
19:58
that
19:58
you're
19:58
doing,
19:58
whether
19:58
it's
19:59
inspecting
20:00
or
20:00
making
20:00
small
20:01
repairs
20:01
as
20:01
you
20:02
move
20:02
along,
20:03
it's
20:03
a
20:03
much
20:04
more
20:04
manageable
20:04
thing
20:05
if
20:05
you
20:05
wait
20:06
too
20:06
long.
20:06
And
20:06
too
20:07
long
20:07
usually
20:08
looks
20:08
like,
20:08
hey,
20:09
I've
20:09
got
20:09
a
20:09
water
20:09
stain
20:09
in
20:10
my
20:10
ceiling
20:10
now
20:10
I
20:10
got
20:11
a
20:11
leak.
20:11
I
20:11
got
20:11
to
20:11
go
20:11
figure
20:11
out
20:12
where
20:12
it
20:12
is.
20:12
And
20:12
maybe
20:13
that
20:13
gets
20:13
to
20:13
be
20:13
a
20:14
really
20:14
expensive
20:14
thing
20:14
to
20:15
fix.
20:15
But
20:15
if
20:15
you
20:16
wait
20:16
until
20:16
that
20:16
happens,
20:17
you
20:17
might
20:18
miss
20:18
the
20:18
opportunity
20:19
to
20:19
nip
20:19
a
20:20
small
20:20
problem
20:21
in
20:21
the
20:21
budget
20:22
before
20:22
it
20:22
becomes
20:22
a
20:23
really
20:23
big
20:23
and
20:23
expensive
20:24
problem.
20:24
It's
20:25
a
20:25
good
20:25
idea
20:25
to
20:25
have
20:25
an
20:26
annual
20:26
plan.
20:26
Like
20:27
you
20:27
said,
20:27
once
20:27
you
20:28
have
20:28
a
20:28
relationship
20:28
with
20:28
a
20:29
roofer
20:29
that
20:29
you
20:29
trust
20:30
that
20:30
has
20:30
all
20:30
the
20:31
proper
20:31
credentials
20:32
that
20:32
your
20:32
state
20:33
says
20:33
is
20:33
is
20:33
in
20:34
good
20:34
standing,
20:34
once
20:35
you
20:35
have
20:35
a
20:35
good
20:35
relationship,
20:36
then
20:36
having
20:36
them
20:37
come
20:37
out
20:37
every
20:37
year
20:38
to
20:38
go
20:38
up
20:38
there
20:38
because
20:39
I
20:39
don't
20:39
know
20:39
about
20:39
you,
20:40
I've
20:40
been
20:40
building
20:40
houses
20:40
for
20:41
35
20:41
years.
20:42
I
20:42
still
20:42
get
20:42
a
20:42
little
20:43
nervous
20:43
when
20:43
I'm
20:43
on
20:43
my,
20:44
my
20:44
third
20:44
story
20:45
roof
20:45
walking
20:45
around
20:46
at
20:46
7:12
20:46
pitch,
20:47
it's
20:48
not
20:48
the
20:48
most
20:48
comfortable
20:48
place
20:49
for
20:49
me
20:49
to
20:49
be.
20:49
But
20:50
roofers
20:50
get
20:50
to
20:50
pay
20:51
to
20:51
do
20:51
that
20:51
stuff
20:52
every
20:52
day,
20:52
so
20:53
they're
20:53
a
20:53
little
20:53
bit
20:53
more
20:53
comfortable
20:54
in
20:54
those
20:54
surroundings
20:54
and
20:55
they
20:55
can
20:55
really
20:55
pay
20:56
attention
20:56
to
20:56
the
20:56
details
20:56
that
20:57
matter
20:57
around
20:58
the
20:58
house.
20:58
We
20:58

20:58

21:04
We'll

23:16
Hey,

23:26
Welcome

23:43
This
23:43
thing
23:43
is
23:44
super
23:44
cool
23:45
and
23:45
you
23:45

let's
23:50
get
23:50

23:50

23:50
our
23:50
conversation
23:51

23:55
Let's
23:55
get
23:55
that
23:55
house
23:56
fortified
23:56
so
23:56
you're
23:57
ready
23:57
for
23:57
the
23:57
next
23:58
wildfire
23:59
or
23:59
storm.
24:00
It's
24:00
probably
24:00
1977
24:01
house.
24:02
I'm
24:02
at
24:02
the
24:02
end
24:03
of
24:03
the
24:03
life
24:03
cycle
24:04
of
24:04
it's
24:04
probably
24:05
second
24:05
roof
24:05
that
24:05
I
24:06
can
24:06
guess.
24:06
And
24:07
I'm
24:07
walking
24:07
around,
24:08
I'm
24:08
like,
24:08
this
24:08
is
24:08
a
24:09
little
24:09
spongy
24:09
right
24:09
here.
24:10
Yeah.
24:10
There's
24:11
no
24:11
signs
24:11
of
24:11
water
24:11
damage,
24:12
but
24:12
spongy
24:13
you
24:13
feel
24:13
you
24:14
can't
24:14
see
24:14
and
24:15
you
24:15
go,
24:15
okay,
24:16
there
24:16
is
24:16
something
24:17
going
24:17
on
24:17
there.
24:17
Which
24:18
means
24:18
it's
24:19
time
24:19
to
24:19
do
24:19
that
24:19
roof.
24:20
Yeah.
24:21
For
24:21
sure.
24:22
It's
24:22
not
24:22
always
24:23
the
24:23
damage
24:24
or
24:24
the
24:24
deterioration
24:24
that
24:25
you
24:25
can
24:25
see
24:25
that
24:25
ultimately
24:26
leads
24:26
to
24:26
a
24:26
problem.
24:27
Right.
24:27
Because
24:27
if
24:27
it's
24:27
spongy,
24:28
what
24:29
does
24:29
that
24:29
mean?
24:29
That
24:30
means
24:30
that
24:30
the
24:30
fasteners
24:31
that
24:31
are
24:31
there
24:31
to
24:31
hold
24:31
that
24:31
roof
24:32
deck
24:32
together,
24:32
that
24:33
hold
24:33
the
24:33
shingles
24:34
on,
24:34
they're
24:35
probably
24:35
not
24:35
as
24:36
secure
24:36
as
24:37
they
24:37
should
24:37
be.
24:38
And
24:38
there's
24:38
no
24:38
way
24:38
to
24:39
really
24:39
know
24:39
that
24:39
unless
24:40
you're
24:40
getting
24:40
up
24:40
there
24:40
and
24:41
taking
24:41
a
24:41
look
24:41
around.
24:42
Otherwise,
24:43
mother
24:43
nature
24:44
will,
24:44
will
24:44
let
24:44
you
24:44
know
24:45
when
24:45
the
24:45
roof
24:45
cover
24:46
comes
24:46
off
24:46
and
24:47
bad
24:47
things
24:47
start
24:47
to
24:47
happen.
24:48
Yeah,
24:49
that's
24:49
no
24:49
fun
24:50
when
24:50
you've
24:50
got
24:50
half
24:50
your
24:50
roof
24:51
sitting
24:51
in
24:51
your
24:51
driveway,
24:52
including
24:52
the
24:52
sheets.
24:53
That's,
24:54
that's
24:54
creating
24:54
all
24:55
the
24:55
other
24:55
issues
24:55
with
24:56
that.
24:56
And
24:56
you
24:57
guys
24:57
have
24:57
a
24:57
great,
24:57
great
24:58
solve
24:58
for
24:58
that.
24:59
I
24:59
wanted
24:59
to
24:59
ask
25:00
too.
25:00
Within
25:00
the
25:00
fortified
25:01
program,
25:01
there
25:01
are
25:02
so
25:02
many
25:02
other
25:02
things
25:02
that
25:02
can
25:03
go
25:03
wrong.
25:03
Of
25:03
course,
25:03
the
25:04
roof
25:04
is
25:04
what
25:04
we
25:04
see
25:04
in
25:05
all
25:05
the
25:05
videos
25:05
on
25:05
the
25:05
Weather
25:06
channel
25:06
and
25:06
places
25:07
like
25:07
that
25:07
with
25:07
the
25:07
literally
25:08
the
25:08
whole
25:08
roof
25:09
and
25:09
trust
25:09
system
25:09
ending
25:10
out
25:10
in
25:10
a
25:11
parking
25:11
lot
25:11
someplace.
25:12
But
25:12
there
25:13
are
25:13
so
25:13
many
25:13
other
25:14
things
25:14
that
25:14
people
25:14
can
25:14
be
25:15
doing
25:15
to
25:16
deal
25:16
with
25:16
wind
25:17
events
25:17
outside
25:18
of
25:18
even
25:18
hurricanes
25:19
out
25:19
there.
25:19
Yeah.
25:20
And
25:20
I'm
25:20
glad
25:21
you
25:21
bring
25:21
that
25:21
up.
25:21
So
25:21
as
25:22
we
25:22
start
25:22
to
25:22
look
25:23
at,
25:23
hey,
25:23
where
25:23
are
25:24
there
25:24
opportunities
25:24
where
25:25
could
25:25
homeowners
25:25
benefit
25:26
from
25:26
the
25:26
science
25:27
that
25:27
we
25:27
do
25:27
and
25:27
the
25:28
programs
25:28
that
25:28
we
25:28
offer.
25:29
And
25:29
we're
25:29
looking
25:30
to
25:30
bring
25:30
some
25:30
more
25:31
of
25:31
that,
25:31
that
25:32
really
25:32
important
25:33
wind
25:33
science
25:34
and
25:34
mitigation,
25:35
those
25:35
mitigation
25:36
strategies
25:36
inland
25:37
where
25:37
you
25:37
know
25:37
you're
25:38
likely
25:38
to
25:38
have
25:38
severe
25:38
convective
25:39
storms,
25:39
maybe
25:40
derechos,
25:40
tornadoes,
25:41
severe
25:42
thunderstorms.
25:43
And
25:43
like
25:43
you
25:44
said,
25:44
once
25:44
you
25:44
take
25:44
care
25:44
of
25:44
the
25:45
roof,
25:45
the
25:45
next
25:46
place
25:46
you
25:46
should
25:47
look,
25:47
coincidentally
25:49
is
25:49
the
25:49
garage
25:50
door.
25:50
If
25:50
your
25:50
home
25:51
has
25:51
a
25:51
garage,
25:52
when,
25:52
if
25:52
you
25:53
look
25:53
at
25:53
the
25:53
videos
25:54
and
25:54
pictures
25:55
following
25:55
say
25:56
even
25:56
a
25:56
low
25:56
grade
25:56
tornado
25:57
and
25:57
houses
25:58
with
25:58
structural
25:58
damage,
25:59
a
25:59
lot
25:59
of
26:00
times
26:00
what's
26:00
going
26:00
on
26:01
there
26:01
is
26:01
that
26:01
a
26:01
garage
26:02
door
26:02
actually
26:03
was
26:04
compromised
26:04
by
26:05
the
26:05
pressure
26:05
that
26:06
the,
26:06
the
26:06
wind
26:07
can
26:07
exert
26:07
in
26:07
those
26:07
situations.
26:08
And
26:09
what
26:09
happens
26:09
is
26:09
the
26:10
air
26:10
rushes
26:10
in
26:10
through
26:11
that
26:11
opening
26:12
and
26:12
then
26:12
it
26:12
blow,
26:13
it
26:13
tries
26:13
to
26:13
blow
26:13
the
26:13
house
26:13
up
26:14
like
26:14
a
26:14
balloon
26:14
and
26:14
it
26:14
pushes
26:15
out
26:15
on
26:15
the
26:15
walls
26:16
and
26:16
up
26:16
on
26:16
the
26:16
roof
26:17
and
26:17
that's
26:18
where
26:18
you
26:18
can
26:18
have
26:19
some
26:19
structural
26:19
problems.
26:20
And
26:20
taking
26:20
a
26:20
look
26:20
at
26:21
that
26:21
garage
26:21
door
26:22
and
26:22
considering
26:23
replacing
26:23
it
26:23
with
26:24
one
26:24
that's
26:24
properly
26:24
pressured
26:25
again,
26:25
we've
26:25
done
26:26
all
26:26
that
26:26
work
26:26
for
26:26
you
26:27
in
26:27
our
26:27
standard
26:27
we
26:28
tell
26:28
you,
26:28
hey,
26:28
if
26:28
you
26:28
have
26:28
a
26:29
two
26:29
car
26:29
garage
26:30
with
26:30
a
26:30
door
26:30
that's
26:30
eight
26:31
foot
26:31
tall,
26:31
here's
26:32
the
26:32
design
26:32
pressures
26:33
that
26:33
door
26:33
should
26:33
be
26:34
able
26:34
to
26:34
meet.
26:34
That
26:35
gives
26:35
you
26:35
all
26:35
the
26:35
information
26:35
you
26:36
need
26:36
to
26:36
either
26:36
give
26:36
it
26:36
to
26:36
a
26:37
contractor
26:37
that
26:37
you
26:37
trust
26:38
or
26:38
to
26:38
go
26:38
to
26:39
a
26:39
retailer,
26:40
a
26:40
garage
26:40
door
26:40
retailer
26:41
and
26:41
say,
26:41
hey,
26:41
I'm
26:42
looking
26:42
for
26:42
a
26:42
door
26:42
that
26:42
can
26:42
meet
26:43
these
26:43
design
26:44
criteria
26:45
that
26:45
can
26:45
make
26:45
a
26:46
huge
26:46
difference
26:46
in
26:47
whether
26:47
your
26:47
home
26:47
actually
26:48
survives
26:49
in
26:49
an
26:49
EF0,
26:50
one
26:50
or
26:51
two
26:51
tornado
26:52
versus
26:53
having
26:53
a
26:53
real
26:54
bad
26:54
outcome.
26:55
I
26:55
was
26:55
at
26:55
IBS
26:56
week
26:57
and
26:57
a
26:57
half
26:57
two
26:57
weeks
26:57
ago
26:58
and
26:59
I
26:59
got
27:00
my
27:00
phone
27:00
is
27:01
lighting
27:01
up,
27:01
I'm
27:01
like,
27:02
is
27:02
there
27:02
an
27:02
emergency?
27:03
I
27:03
go
27:03
down
27:03
and
27:03
it's
27:04
all
27:04
my
27:05
weather
27:05
apps
27:06
saying
27:06
that
27:06
I've
27:06
got
27:07
a
27:07
tornado
27:07
warning
27:08
here
27:09
at
27:09
my
27:09
house
27:10
and
27:10
I'm
27:10
like,
27:11
oh
27:11
wow.
27:12
And
27:12
a
27:13
lot
27:13
of
27:13
these
27:13
thin
27:14
metal
27:15
entry
27:15
level
27:15
garage
27:16
doors.
27:16
If
27:16
it's
27:17
like
27:17
a
27:17
16
27:17
by
27:18
7
27:18
garage
27:18
door,
27:19
if
27:19
I
27:20
wanted
27:20
to
27:20
do
27:20
that
27:21
as
27:21
a
27:21
demo
27:21
day,
27:22
I
27:22
could
27:22
run
27:22
for
27:23
the
27:23
middle
27:23
of
27:23
that,
27:24
slam
27:24
my
27:25
body
27:25
into
27:25
it
27:25
and
27:26
taco
27:26
it
27:26
pretty
27:27
good.
27:27
And
27:28
that's
27:28
nothing
27:29
like
27:29
the
27:29
pressures
27:29
that
27:30
mother
27:30
nature
27:31
is
27:31
going
27:31
to
27:31
go
27:31
throw
27:31
out
27:32
with
27:32
a
27:32
40,
27:32
50,
27:33
60,
27:33
70
27:33
and
27:34
above
27:34
wind
27:34
event.
27:35
Yeah.
27:36
And
27:36
it's,
27:37
it
27:37
really
27:37
comes
27:37
down
27:38
to
27:38
are
27:38
you
27:38
asking
27:39
the
27:39
right
27:39
questions
27:40
at
27:40
the
27:40
right
27:40
time?
27:41
And
27:41
the
27:41
majority
27:42
of
27:42
builders,
27:42
through
27:42
no
27:43
fault
27:43
of
27:43
their
27:43
own,
27:43
the
27:44
building
27:44
codes
27:44
really
27:44
haven't
27:45
kept
27:46
the
27:46
criteria
27:47
moving
27:47
along
27:48
as
27:48
the
27:48
wind
27:49
science
27:49
has
27:50
Improved
27:50
to
27:50
say,
27:50
hey,
27:51
this
27:51
is
27:51
how
27:51
pressure
27:52
is
27:52
really
27:52
going
27:52
to
27:52
act
27:52
on
27:53
those
27:53
really
27:53
large
27:53
openings.
27:54
It's
27:55
pretty
27:55
common
27:55
along
27:56
the
27:56
coast
27:56
for
27:56
the
27:57
garage
27:57
door
27:57
to
27:57
be
27:57
attended
27:58
to,
27:58
but
27:58
it's
27:59
not
27:59
real
27:59
common
27:59
once
28:00
you
28:00
start
28:00
to
28:00
move
28:00
inland.
28:01
And
28:01
in
28:01
Fortified,
28:02
we
28:03
raise
28:03
the
28:03
base
28:04
design
28:04
wind
28:04
speed.
28:05
Most
28:05
people
28:05
probably
28:06
don't
28:06
even
28:06
know
28:06
that
28:06
they
28:07
have
28:07
a
28:07
design
28:07
wind
28:07
speed
28:08
at
28:08
their
28:08
location.
28:09
But
28:09
the
28:09
majority
28:10
of
28:10
homes
28:10
in
28:10
the
28:10
United
28:11
States
28:11
nowadays
28:12
are
28:12
being
28:12
built
28:13
to
28:13
resist
28:14
some
28:14
115
28:15
miles
28:15
an
28:15
hour.
28:16
Fortified
28:17
starts
28:17
at
28:17
130,
28:18
which
28:18
is
28:18
like
28:18
an
28:18
EF1,
28:19
low
28:20
grade
28:20
EF2.
28:21
And
28:21
then
28:21
we
28:22
provide
28:22
those
28:22
critical
28:23
details
28:23
like
28:24
the
28:24
design
28:24
pressure
28:25
and
28:25
all
28:25
that
28:25
really
28:26
does.
28:26
It
28:26
adds
28:26
about
28:27
maybe
28:27
five
28:28
to
28:28
six
28:29
hundred
28:29
dollars
28:29
to
28:29
the
28:29
cost
28:30
of
28:30
the
28:30
door.
28:30
If
28:30
you're
28:30
going
28:31
to
28:31
upgrade
28:32
a
28:32
door
28:32
that
28:33
you've
28:33
already,
28:33
that's
28:34
going
28:34
to
28:34
be
28:34
put
28:34
in
28:34
and
28:34
you're
28:35
going
28:35
to
28:35
take
28:35
it
28:35
from
28:35
where
28:35
it
28:35
is
28:36
to
28:36
an
28:36
upgraded
28:37
door,
28:37
or
28:37
if
28:37
you're
28:37
going
28:38
to
28:38
replace
28:38
the
28:38
door,
28:38
you
28:39
might
28:39
be
28:39
looking
28:39
at
28:39
around
28:39
1100
28:40
or
28:40
$1200
28:41
for
28:41
that.
28:41
But
28:42
when
28:42
the.
28:42
But
28:42
the
28:42
performance
28:43
that
28:43
you
28:43
get
28:44
and
28:44
the
28:44
peace
28:45
of
28:45
mind
28:45
that
28:45
you
28:45
get,
28:46
that,
28:46
hey,
28:46
that
28:46
garage
28:46
door,
28:47
once
28:47
it's
28:47
closed
28:48
and
28:48
locked,
28:48
it's
28:49
going
28:49
to
28:49
be
28:49
able
28:49
to
28:49
withstand
28:50
an
28:50
awful
28:50
lot
28:50
of
28:51
pressure
28:51
and
28:52
protect
28:52
the
28:52
rest
28:53
of
28:53
the
28:53
house.
28:53
Because
28:54
again,
28:54
I
28:55
bet
28:55
you
28:55
most
28:55
people
28:55
don't
28:56
know
28:56
the
28:56
majority
28:57
of
28:57
houses
28:57
in
28:57
the
28:57
US
28:58
Are
28:58
designed
28:59
to
28:59
be
28:59
fully
28:59
enclosed.
29:00
That
29:00
means
29:00
no
29:01
exterior
29:01
openings
29:02
open.
29:03
So
29:03
all
29:03
the
29:03
pressure
29:03
can
29:04
be
29:04
exerted
29:04
on
29:04
the
29:04
outside
29:05
of
29:05
the
29:05
wall.
29:05
But
29:06
once
29:06
that
29:06
an
29:06
opening
29:07
gets
29:07
breached,
29:08
especially
29:08
one
29:08
as
29:08
large
29:09
as
29:09
the
29:09
garage
29:09
door,
29:10
now
29:10
you
29:11
have
29:11
pressure
29:11
acting
29:11
on
29:12
both
29:12
sides
29:12
of
29:13
the
29:13
wall
29:13
and
29:13
the
29:13
roof,
29:14
and
29:14
that's
29:14
when
29:15
things
29:15
start
29:15
to
29:15
really
29:15
fail
29:16
because
29:16
they're
29:16
just
29:16
not
29:16
designed
29:17
to
29:17
do
29:17
that.
29:18
And
29:18
especially
29:18
when
29:19
you're
29:19
starting
29:19
to
29:19
deal
29:19
with
29:19
homes
29:20
that
29:20
are
29:20
built
29:20
before
29:20
the
29:21
70s
29:22
or
29:22
even
29:22
60s
29:23
in
29:23
most
29:23
areas
29:23
that
29:24
those
29:24
walls
29:25
to
29:25
the
29:25
garage
29:26
aren't
29:26
even
29:26
attached
29:27
to
29:27
the
29:27
foundation,
29:28
they're
29:28
just
29:29
sitting
29:29
there.
29:29
The
29:29
weight
29:29
of
29:30
that
29:30
garage,
29:30
which
29:31
really
29:31
isn't
29:31
that
29:32
much
29:32
on
29:33
an
29:33
attached
29:34
garage,
29:34
is
29:34
just
29:35
sitting
29:35
on
29:35
top
29:35
of
29:35
that.
29:36
There
29:36
might
29:36
be
29:36
a
29:36
finished
29:37
nail
29:37
or
29:37
two
29:37
or
29:37
a
29:37
concrete
29:38
nail
29:38
in
29:38
there,
29:38
but
29:39
really
29:39
it's
29:39
not
29:40
put
29:40
in
29:40
there
29:40
like
29:40
a
29:40
house
29:41
that
29:41
was
29:41
built
29:41
in
29:42
most
29:42
places
29:42
in
29:42
the
29:42
country
29:43
in
29:43
the
29:43
90s,
29:44
2000s
29:45
and
29:45
later
29:45
when
29:45
you
29:45
put
29:46
that
29:46
pressure
29:46
on
29:46
there
29:47
and
29:47
just
29:47
have
29:47
the
29:47
weight
29:47
of
29:48
the
29:48
building
29:48
holding
29:48
it
29:48
down,
29:49
it's
29:49
just
29:49
another
29:49
part
29:50
of
29:50
the
29:50
problem.
29:51
And
29:51
we're
29:51
not
29:51
even
29:51
talking
29:52
seismic.
29:52
We're
29:52
just
29:52
talking
29:52
wind.
29:53
Yeah,
29:53
we're
29:53
just
29:53
talking
29:54
wind.
29:54
Wind
29:54
can
29:55
Push
29:55
it
29:55
off,
29:55
it
29:55
can
29:55
overturn
29:56
it,
29:56
it
29:56
can
29:56
do
29:57
a
29:57
lot
29:57
of
29:57
things.
29:57
And
29:57
that's
29:58
another
29:58
one
29:58
of
29:58
those
29:58
things
29:58
where
29:59
as
29:59
a
29:59
normal
29:59
homeowner,
30:00
if
30:00
I
30:00
walk
30:00
up
30:01
to
30:01
a
30:01
wall
30:01
that's
30:01
just
30:02
being
30:02
held
30:02
down
30:02
with
30:02
gravity,
30:03
chances
30:03
are
30:03
I
30:04
can't
30:04
push
30:04
it.
30:05
I
30:05
might
30:05
be
30:05
able
30:05
to
30:05
make
30:05
it
30:06
move
30:06
a
30:06
little
30:06
bit,
30:06
but
30:07
deflect
30:08
a
30:08
little
30:08
bit,
30:09
but
30:09
I
30:09
can't
30:09
push
30:09
it
30:10
off
30:10
the
30:10
foundation.
30:10
But
30:11
you'd
30:11
be
30:11
surprised
30:12
at
30:12
how
30:12
little
30:13
wind
30:13
it
30:13
really
30:13
takes
30:14
it
30:14
spread
30:14
out
30:15
large
30:16
area
30:16
to
30:17
actually
30:17
get
30:17
things
30:18
to
30:18
start
30:18
moving
30:18
in
30:18
the
30:19
wrong
30:19
direction.
30:19
So,
30:20
yeah,
30:20
gravity
30:20
is
30:20
not
30:21
a
30:22
solution.
30:22
There
30:23
really
30:23
should
30:23
be
30:24
positive
30:24
connections.
30:25
And
30:25
you'd
30:26
mentioned
30:26
it
30:26
before,
30:27
we
30:27
have
30:27
the
30:27
roof
30:27
level
30:28
of
30:28
designation,
30:29
garage
30:29
doors
30:30
opening
30:30
protection,
30:31
gable
30:31
end,
30:32
roof
30:32
bracing.
30:33
That's
30:33
in
30:33
our
30:33
silver
30:34
level.
30:34
And
30:34
our
30:34
third
30:35
and
30:35
final
30:35
level
30:35
of
30:36
fortified
30:36
is
30:37
the
30:37
gold
30:37
level.
30:38
That's
30:38
where
30:38
we
30:38
deal
30:39
with
30:39
something
30:39
called
30:40
a
30:40
continuous
30:40
load
30:41
path,
30:41
which
30:41
is
30:41
roof
30:42
to
30:42
wall
30:42
connections,
30:43
wall
30:43
to
30:43
floor
30:43
connections,
30:44
and
30:44
then
30:44
floor
30:45
to
30:45
foundation.
30:46
And
30:46
that
30:46
floor
30:46
to
30:47
foundation
30:47
connection
30:48
is
30:48
what
30:48
you
30:48
just
30:48
described.
30:49
That's
30:49
what's
30:49
going
30:49
to
30:49
keep
30:49
that
30:50
garage
30:50
wall
30:51
firmly
30:51
attached
30:52
to
30:52
the
30:52
slab
30:53
or
30:53
the
30:53
stem
30:53
wall
30:54
or
30:54
whatever
30:54
the
30:55
situ
30:55
the
30:55
foundation
30:56
system
30:56
is
30:56
below.
30:57
Yeah,
30:58
it's
30:58
absolutely
30:58
amazing.
30:59
And
30:59
this
30:59
was
30:59
probably
31:00
four
31:01
or
31:01
five
31:01
years
31:01
ago,
31:02
time
31:03
flies.
31:03
And
31:03
being
31:04
a
31:04
West
31:04
coast
31:05
guy,
31:05
I
31:06
was
31:06
out
31:06
there
31:06
at
31:06
the
31:06
Southeastern
31:07
Building
31:07
conference,
31:08
and
31:08
I
31:08
think
31:08
that's
31:08
the
31:08
first
31:08
time
31:09
I
31:09
ran
31:09
into
31:09
you
31:09
guys
31:09
out
31:10
there.
31:10
And
31:11
I
31:11
was
31:11
emceeing
31:12
the
31:12
stage,
31:12
and
31:12
I'm
31:13
watching
31:13
them
31:13
talk
31:13
about
31:14
the
31:14
stuff
31:15
down
31:15
there,
31:15
and
31:15
I'm
31:15
like,
31:15
why
31:16
aren't
31:16
we
31:16
doing
31:17
this?
31:17
I
31:17
thought
31:17
we
31:18
were
31:18
on
31:18
top
31:18
of
31:18
this.
31:19
And
31:20
it's
31:20
something
31:20
that
31:21
it
31:21
really
31:21
shows
31:22
the
31:22
rest
31:22
of
31:22
the
31:22
country
31:23
how
31:23
far
31:23
the
31:24
Gulf
31:24
coast
31:24
states
31:25
really
31:25
have
31:25
come
31:25
along,
31:26
and
31:26
attaching
31:27
that
31:27
top
31:28
sill
31:28
plate
31:28
all
31:28
the
31:29
way
31:29
down
31:29
to
31:29
the
31:29
foundation.
31:30
And
31:30
it's
31:30
just
31:31
so
31:31
common
31:32
sense
31:32
to
31:32
me.
31:32
It's
31:32
like,
31:33
why
31:33
isn't
31:33
this
31:34
building
31:34
code
31:35
across
31:35
the
31:35
states
31:35
yet?
31:36
And
31:36
I
31:36
know
31:36
it
31:36
increases
31:37
costs,
31:37
but
31:38
the
31:38
amount
31:38
of
31:39
safety
31:39
and
31:39
resilience
31:40
is
31:41
way
31:42
different
31:42
with
31:43
just
31:43
a
31:43
little
31:43
more
31:44
metal,
31:44
a
31:44
little
31:45
more
31:45
cable,
31:45
and
31:46
some
31:46
more
31:46
fasteners.
31:47
Yeah.
31:47
And
31:47
really,
31:48
you
31:48
can.
31:49
With
31:49
the
31:50
right
31:50
information,
31:50
you
31:51
can
31:51
make
31:51
smart
31:51
decisions
31:52
and
31:52
you
31:52
can
31:52
get
31:53
lots
31:53
of
31:53
value
31:54
for
31:55
the
31:55
modest
31:55
increases
31:56
that
31:56
you
31:56
might
31:56
have
31:57
to
31:57
pay
31:57
to
31:58
get
31:58
those
31:58
things
31:58
into
31:59
your
31:59
house.
31:59
So,
31:59
for
31:59
example,
32:00
a
32:00
typical
32:01
fortified
32:01
roof
32:02
that's
32:02
mitigated
32:02
for
32:03
high
32:03
wind,
32:04
you
32:04
might
32:04
pay
32:04
$1,500
32:05
to
32:05
$3,000,
32:06
depending
32:07
on
32:07
some
32:07
of
32:07
the
32:07
choices
32:07
that
32:08
you
32:08
make.
32:08
But
32:08
that's
32:09
really,
32:09
at
32:09
the
32:10
end
32:10
of
32:10
the
32:10
day,
32:10
looking
32:11
at
32:11
the
32:11
overall
32:11
life
32:12
span
32:12
of
32:12
your
32:13
roof,
32:13
that's
32:13
really
32:14
a
32:14
modest
32:14
investment
32:15
in
32:16
superior
32:17
performance.
32:17
And
32:18
then
32:18
as
32:18
far
32:18
as
32:19
these
32:19
other
32:20
things
32:20
that
32:21
are
32:21
being
32:21
done
32:22
down
32:22
at
32:22
the
32:22
Gulf
32:22
coast,
32:23
those
32:23
are
32:23
hard
32:23
lessons
32:24
learned.
32:24
That's
32:24
storms
32:25
like
32:25
Hurricane
32:26
Andrew,
32:26
Hurricane
32:27
Katrina,
32:28
even
32:28
Milton
32:28
that
32:29
came
32:29
through
32:29
Florida
32:29
last
32:30
year.
32:30
Milton
32:30
was
32:30
a
32:30
hurricane
32:31
over
32:31
in
32:31
Tampa.
32:32
I'm
32:32
on
32:32
the
32:32
east
32:33
coast
32:33
of
32:33
the
32:33
state.
32:34
I
32:34
got
32:34
nothing
32:34
but
32:34
tornadoes
32:35
over
32:35
here
32:35
and
32:36
it
32:36
ripped
32:36
through
32:37
my
32:37
community.
32:38
And
32:38
we've
32:38
been
32:38
building
32:39
hurricane
32:39
resistant
32:39
structures
32:40
in
32:40
this
32:40
part
32:40
of
32:40
Florida
32:41
for
32:41
a
32:41
long
32:41
time
32:42
and
32:42
still
32:42
had
32:43
some
32:43
challenges,
32:43
particularly
32:44
with
32:44
older
32:45
building
32:45
stocks.
32:45
Like
32:46
you
32:46
say,
32:46
Eric,
32:46
it's
32:46
just
32:47
really
32:47
important
32:47
to
32:48
be
32:48
intentional
32:48
about
32:49
what
32:49
you
32:49
want
32:49
to
32:49
do
32:50
around
32:50

35:28
This
35:28
will
35:29
tell
35:29
you
35:29
how
35:29
much
35:29
propane
35:30
you
35:30
have
35:30
left
35:30
and
35:31
how
35:31
to
35:31
cook
35:31
that
35:32
meat.
35:32
How
35:32
cool
35:33
is
35:33
that?
35:34
Now
35:34
let's
35:34
get
35:34
back
35:34
to
35:34
our
35:35
conversation
35:35
with
35:36
Fred
35:36
Malik
35:36
from
35:36
the
35:37
Insurance
35:37
Institute
35:37
for
35:38
Business
35:38
and
35:38
Home
35:38
Safety.
35:39
This
35:39
is
35:39
a
35:39
great
35:40
conversation
35:41
at
35:41
a
35:41
flat
35:41
roof.
35:42
And
35:43
yes,
35:43
that
35:44
building
35:45
burned
35:45
down
35:46
because
35:47
those
35:47
embers
35:47
got
35:48
into
35:48
some
35:48
places
35:49
and
35:49
of
35:49
course,
35:50
caught
35:50
the
35:50
building
35:50
on
35:51
fire
35:51
and
35:51
then
35:51
caught
35:52
the
35:52
vans
35:52
on
35:52
fire.
35:53
And
35:53
it
35:54
was
35:55
hundreds
35:55
of
35:56
yards
35:56
and
35:56
I'm
35:56
talking
35:57
probably
35:58
three
35:58
or
35:59
four
35:59
football
35:59
fields
36:00
away
36:01
from
36:01
the
36:01
nearest
36:02
structure.
36:03
And
36:04
those
36:04
embers
36:04
still
36:05
got
36:05
it.
36:06
Yeah.
36:06
So
36:06
really,
36:07
it
36:07
shows
36:07
how
36:07
that
36:07
preparedness
36:08
can
36:08
really
36:08
change
36:09
the
36:09
outcome
36:10
for
36:10
anyone.
36:10
Yeah.
36:11
And
36:11
the
36:11
scary
36:12
thing
36:12
is
36:12
that
36:13
when
36:13
the
36:13
wind
36:14
starts
36:14
blowing
36:14
like
36:14
they
36:14
had
36:15
out
36:15
there
36:15
and
36:15
you
36:15
get
36:16
those
36:16
embers
36:16
up
36:16
into
36:16
the
36:17
wind
36:17
field,
36:17
they
36:17
can
36:17
travel
36:18
a
36:18
mile
36:18
or
36:19
more.
36:20
It'd
36:20
still
36:20
be
36:21
volatile.
36:21
And
36:22
that's
36:22
to
36:22
your
36:23
point,
36:23
3,
36:23
400
36:23
yards
36:24
away
36:24
seems
36:25
like
36:25
a
36:25
far
36:25
enough
36:26
separation,
36:26
but
36:27
with
36:27
it,
36:27
with
36:28
the
36:28
right
36:28
level
36:29
of
36:29
wind
36:29
in
36:30
the
36:30
right
36:30
direction,
36:30
it
36:31
can
36:31
carry
36:31
embers
36:31
across
36:32
pretty
36:33
significant
36:33
distances
36:34
and
36:34
find
36:35
a,
36:35
a
36:35
hospitable
36:36
place
36:36
to
36:37
land
36:37
and
36:37
reignite
36:38
something
36:38
that,
36:39
that
36:39
you
36:39
just
36:39
didn't
36:39
think
36:40
it
36:40
was
36:40
going
36:40
to
36:40
happen.
36:40
And
36:40
that's
36:41
why
36:41
diligence
36:42
is
36:42
so
36:42
important.
36:43
And
36:43
then
36:44
there
36:44
were
36:44
some
36:44
great
36:44
examples
36:45
Too,
36:45
though
36:45
there
36:45
were
36:46
some
36:46
positive
36:46
examples
36:47
out
36:47
there
36:47
where
36:47
you
36:47
would
36:47
see
36:48
everything
36:49
decimated.
36:50
But
36:50
there's
36:50
two
36:50
homes
36:50
sitting
36:51
there,
36:51
right
36:51
there
36:51
that
36:51
have
36:52
some
36:52
char
36:52
marks
36:52
on
36:52
the
36:53
outside,
36:53
but
36:53
maybe
36:54
some
36:54
smoke
36:54
damage
36:54
on
36:55
the
36:55
inside.
36:55
But
36:55
the
36:55
building
36:56
is
36:56
still
36:56
standing.
36:57
It's
36:57
still,
36:58
it
36:58
still
36:58
fought
36:59
the
36:59
good
36:59
fight
36:59
and
37:00
won
37:00
and,
37:01
and
37:01
survived
37:01
that.
37:02
And
37:02
so
37:03
it
37:03
really
37:03
shows
37:03
that
37:04
how
37:04
we
37:05
build
37:05
things,
37:05
how
37:06
we
37:06
maintain
37:06
them,
37:07
can
37:07
really
37:07
change
37:08
the
37:08
outcome.
37:08
And
37:09
especially
37:09
as
37:10
we're
37:10
out
37:10
there
37:10
doing
37:11
remodels,
37:12
outside
37:12
of
37:12
even
37:13
new
37:13
construction,
37:13
there's
37:14
a
37:14
lot
37:14
of
37:14
fair
37:14
choices
37:15
we
37:15
can
37:15
make
37:15
that
37:15
are
37:16
fairly
37:16
minor,
37:17
like
37:17
putting
37:18
up
37:18
that
37:18
metal
37:18
fence
37:19
instead
37:19
of
37:19
the
37:19
cedar
37:20
one.
37:20
Those
37:20
are
37:21
big
37:21
things
37:21
that
37:21
you
37:21
can
37:21
do
37:21
that'll
37:22
just
37:22
not
37:23
change
37:23
the
37:23
fire
37:24
path.
37:24
Because
37:25
I
37:25
saw
37:25
dozens.
37:26
I
37:26
was
37:26
streaming
37:27
the
37:27
CBS
37:28
channel
37:28
down
37:28
there
37:29
on
37:29
online
37:30
and
37:30
watching
37:30
it,
37:31
just
37:31
watching
37:31
the
37:31
firefight
37:32
and
37:32
you
37:33
could
37:33
see
37:33
all
37:33
these
37:34
news
37:34
reporters
37:35
out
37:35
there
37:35
and
37:35
you
37:36
could
37:36
just
37:36
watch
37:36
it.
37:36
It
37:37
was
37:37
like
37:37
the
37:37
cartoon
37:38
and
37:38
they
37:38
lit
37:39
the
37:39
dynamite
37:39
for
37:40
Bugs
37:40
Bunny.
37:41
You
37:41
could
37:41
see
37:41
that
37:41
flame
37:42
going
37:42
right
37:42
up
37:42
to
37:43
it.
37:43
It's
37:43
here
37:43
we
37:43
go
37:44
again.
37:44
Yeah.
37:45
And
37:45
it
37:45
was
37:45
just
37:45
a
37:46
fence.
37:47
Exactly.
37:47
Yeah.
37:48
And
37:48
to
37:48
your
37:49
point,
37:49
you
37:49
don't
37:50
really
37:50
even
37:50
have
37:50
to
37:50
replace
37:50
the
37:51
entire
37:51
cedar
37:51
fence,
37:52
but
37:52
it's
37:52
that
37:52
last
37:53
four
37:53
to
37:53
six
37:54
feet
37:54
where
37:54
you
37:54
have
37:54
the
37:54
gate,
37:55
that's,
37:55
that's
37:55
where
37:56
you
37:56
really
37:56
want
37:56
to
37:57
pay
37:57
attention.
37:57
And
37:58
spaces
37:59
at
37:59
a
37:59
premium
37:59
out
37:59
there.
38:00
So
38:00
you've
38:00
got
38:00
a
38:00
lot
38:00
of
38:01
these
38:01
accessory
38:01
dwellings
38:02
or
38:02
additional
38:03
dwelling
38:03
units
38:04
that
38:04
are
38:04
on
38:04
properties
38:05
that
38:05
can
38:05
get
38:05
close
38:06
and
38:06
paying
38:06
attention.
38:07
And
38:07
knowing
38:07
that,
38:07
hey,
38:08
if
38:08
I
38:08
have
38:08
structures
38:09
that
38:09
are
38:09
this
38:09
close
38:09
together,
38:10
they
38:10
can
38:10
become
38:10
ladder
38:11
fuels,
38:11
they
38:11
can
38:12
create
38:12
radiant
38:12
heat
38:13
and
38:13
they
38:13
can
38:14
overwhelm
38:14
things
38:14
like
38:15
vinyl
38:15
window
38:16
frames.
38:16
Right.
38:17
Vinyl
38:17
window
38:17
frames
38:17
can
38:18
melt,
38:18
the
38:18
glazing
38:19
falls
38:19
out
38:19
and
38:19
now
38:20
you've
38:20
got
38:20
contact
38:21
and
38:21
radiant
38:22
heat.
38:22
Getting
38:22
to
38:22
the
38:22
more
38:22
combustible
38:23
stuff
38:23
like
38:24
draperies
38:24
and
38:24
things
38:24
like
38:25
that.
38:25
Those
38:25
details
38:26
are
38:26
all
38:26
super
38:27
important.
38:28
And
38:28
a
38:28
lot
38:28
of
38:28
times
38:29
it
38:29
just
38:29
takes
38:30
knowing,
38:30
okay,
38:31
these
38:31
are
38:31
the
38:31
things
38:32
I
38:32
need
38:32
to
38:32
be
38:32
paying
38:32
attention
38:33
to
38:33
so
38:33
that
38:33
my
38:34
home
38:34
doesn't
38:34
face
38:34
that
38:35
risk.
38:35
Or
38:35
at
38:35
least
38:35
it's
38:36
a
38:36
lot
38:36
lower
38:36
probability.
38:38
Yeah.
38:38
One
38:38
of
38:38
the
38:38
things
38:38
I'm
38:39
starting
38:39
to
38:39
work
38:39
on
38:40
here,
38:40
out
38:40
on
38:40
the
38:40
west
38:40
coast,
38:41
in
38:41
my
38:41
area
38:41
especially,
38:42
is
38:42
that
38:42
we
38:42
have
38:43
a
38:43
lot
38:43
of
38:43
tree
38:44
laws,
38:44
which
38:44
I
38:45
love
38:45
our
38:45
trees.
38:45
I've
38:46
got
38:46
huge
38:46
350
38:47
year
38:47
old
38:47
fir
38:48
trees,
38:48
but
38:49
I've
38:49
also
38:49
got
38:49
some
38:50
that
38:50
are
38:50
five,
38:50
six,
38:51
seven
38:51
feet
38:51
away
38:51
from
38:52
the
38:52
house
38:52
as
38:52
well
38:52
that
38:52
are
38:53
a
38:53
serious
38:54
concern.
38:55
And
38:55
so
38:55
I'm
38:55
going
38:56
to
38:56
start
38:56
leading
38:57
a
38:57
campaign
38:57
here
38:58
of
38:58
let's
38:58
think
38:59
about
38:59
maybe
39:00
planting
39:00
trees
39:01
A
39:01
little
39:01
bit
39:01
farther
39:02
away
39:02
from
39:02
some
39:02
of
39:02
these
39:02
residents
39:03
to
39:03
replace
39:04
them.
39:04
I'm
39:05
working
39:05
on
39:05
a
39:05
program
39:05
out
39:06
here
39:06
where
39:06
we
39:06
can
39:06
start
39:07
that
39:07
conversation.
39:08
Because
39:08
it
39:09
can
39:09
take
39:09
me
39:09
three
39:09
or
39:10
four
39:10
years
39:10
to
39:10
remove
39:10
a
39:11
tree
39:11
that's
39:11
right
39:11
next
39:11
to
39:11
my
39:12
house,
39:12
that
39:12
one
39:13
is
39:13
causing
39:13
damage.
39:14
And
39:14
two,
39:14
in
39:15
a
39:15
wind
39:15
event
39:16
or
39:16
a
39:16
fire
39:16
event.
39:16
I've
39:17
got
39:17
some
39:17
serious
39:17
concerns
39:18
with
39:18
that.
39:18
That
39:18
could
39:19
literally
39:19
do
39:19
some
39:19
damage.
39:20
Yeah,
39:20
once.
39:21
Once
39:22
a
39:22
significant
39:22
tree
39:23
limb
39:23
breaks
39:23
apart
39:24
and
39:24
falls,
39:24
you
39:25
don't
39:25
want
39:25
to
39:25
be
39:25
anywhere
39:25
close
39:26
to
39:26
that.
39:26
Houses
39:26
aren't
39:27
designed
39:27
to
39:27
resist
39:28
the
39:28
impact
39:28
from
39:28
that.
39:29
And
39:29
no
39:29
matter
39:29
how
39:29
good
39:30
it
39:30
is.
39:30
Really,
39:31
I
39:32
think
39:32
you're
39:32
right.
39:32
That's
39:32
again,
39:33
that's
39:33
one
39:33
of
39:33
those
39:33
things
39:33
where
39:33
you
39:33
can
39:34
get
39:34
a
39:35
twofer
39:35
or
39:35
a
39:35
three
39:35
for
39:36
you're
39:36
looking
39:37
at
39:37
how
39:37
do
39:37
I
39:37
maintain
39:38
my
39:38
landscape,
39:39
Do
39:39
I
39:39
trim
39:39
it
39:40
back,
39:40
do
39:40
I
39:40
remove
39:40
it
39:41
and
39:41
can
39:42
I.
39:42
By
39:42
doing
39:43
so,
39:43
do
39:43
I
39:43
reduce
39:44
my
39:44
fire
39:44
risk,
39:44
do
39:44
I
39:45
reduce
39:45
my
39:45
wind
39:45
risk?
39:46
And
39:46
potentially
39:47
some
39:47
life
39:47
safety
39:48
concerns
39:49
from
39:49
a
39:49
tree
39:49
that
39:50
might
39:50
have
39:50
a
39:51
branch
39:51
that
39:51
comes
39:51
off.
39:51
And
39:52
if
39:52
you're
39:52
walking
39:53
around
39:53
outside
39:53
that,
39:53
that
39:54
could
39:54
end
39:54
up
39:54
being
39:54
a
39:54
real
39:54
bad
39:55
day.
39:55
I
39:56
tell
39:56
you
39:56
what,
39:56
I
39:56
had
39:57
a
39:57
house
39:57
here
39:57
in
39:57
our
39:57
wind
39:58
event,
39:58
we
39:58
had
39:58
a
39:58
wind
39:58
ice
39:59
storm
39:59
event
39:59
that
39:59
was
40:00
oh,
40:01
16
40:01
months
40:01
ago.
40:02
And
40:03
down
40:03
my
40:03
street
40:03
here,
40:04
maybe
40:04
10
40:04
houses.
40:05
So
40:05
not
40:05
far
40:06
up
40:06
against
40:07
the
40:07
natural
40:07
park
40:08
there,
40:08
two
40:09
story
40:09
house
40:09
built
40:10
in
40:10
the
40:10
2010.
40:11
So
40:11
it
40:11
had
40:11
all
40:11
the.
40:12
The
40:12
trusses
40:13
were
40:13
tied
40:13
in
40:14
with
40:14
hurricane
40:15
brackets,
40:15
all
40:15
the
40:16
normal
40:16
stuff
40:16
that
40:16
you
40:16
would
40:17
see
40:17
with
40:17
current
40:18
building
40:18
code
40:19
here.
40:19
And
40:19
three
40:20
trees
40:20
came
40:20
down
40:21
and
40:21
they
40:21
hit
40:21
the
40:21
eaves
40:22
of
40:22
the
40:22
house
40:23
just
40:23
like
40:24
karate
40:25
chop.
40:25
And
40:25
it
40:26
took
40:26
the
40:26
whole
40:26
roof
40:27
system,
40:27
trusses
40:28
and
40:28
all.
40:28
And
40:28
when
40:28
it
40:28
hit
40:28
it
40:29
on
40:29
those
40:29
angles,
40:30
it
40:30
ripped
40:31
those
40:31
brackets
40:32
out
40:32
of
40:32
the
40:32
top
40:33
plates,
40:33
ripped
40:33
the
40:34
top
40:34
plates
40:34
off.
40:35
And
40:35
it
40:35
basically
40:36
made
40:36
it
40:36
like
40:36
it
40:37
was
40:37
a
40:37
lid
40:37
that
40:37
was
40:37
offset
40:38
on
40:38
a
40:38
pan
40:38
and
40:39
you
40:39
hit
40:39
the
40:39
edge,
40:40
it
40:40
lifted
40:40
the
40:40
whole
40:41
roof
40:41
system
40:41
off
40:42
and
40:42
dropped
40:43
it
40:43
right
40:43
back
40:43
down
40:43
again
40:44
on
40:44
top
40:44
of
40:44
it.
40:45
Campy
40:45
caddy
40:46
wampus.
40:46
They
40:46
had
40:47
to
40:47
reframe
40:47
the
40:47
entire
40:47
top
40:48
of
40:48
the
40:48
house.
40:48
And
40:49
it
40:49
wasn't
40:49
against
40:50
the
40:50
fasteners,
40:50
but
40:51
again
40:51
it
40:51
was
40:51
just
40:51
those
40:52
loads
40:52
were
40:53
so
40:53
crazy
40:54
on
40:54
the
40:54
point
40:55
of
40:55
the
40:55
corners
40:55
of
40:55
the
40:55
eaves.
40:56
It
40:56
just
40:57
lifted
40:57
it
40:57
off
40:57
like
40:57
it
40:57
was
40:58
a
40:58
toy.
40:58
It
40:58
was
40:58
like
40:58
a
40:59
kid's
40:59
dollhouse.
40:59
And
40:59
you
40:59
ripped
41:00
the
41:00
roof
41:00
off
41:00
of
41:00
it.
41:01
Yeah,
41:01
those
41:01
limbs
41:01
can
41:02
be
41:02
thousands
41:02
of
41:02
pounds.
41:03
And
41:03
those
41:04
connectors
41:04
that
41:04
you're
41:04
talking
41:05
about,
41:05
they're
41:06
just
41:06
not
41:06
rated
41:06
for
41:06
that.
41:07
And
41:07
especially
41:07
when
41:08
you
41:08
get
41:08
a
41:08
real
41:08
concentrated
41:09
point
41:09
load
41:09
like
41:10
that,
41:10
it's
41:10
not
41:11
hard
41:11
to
41:11
overwhelm
41:12
those
41:12
things
41:13
and
41:13
it
41:13
becomes
41:13
what's
41:14
the
41:14
weakest
41:14
leak
41:14
in
41:14
the
41:14
chains?
41:15
Yeah,
41:15
you've
41:15
got
41:16
some
41:16
great
41:16
stories
41:16
there
41:17
about
41:17
the
41:17
devastating
41:18
things
41:18
that
41:18
weather
41:19
can
41:19
do.
41:19
But
41:19
people
41:20
should
41:20
know
41:20
that
41:21
you
41:21
don't
41:21
have
41:22
to
41:22
just
41:22
be
41:22
waiting
41:23
for
41:23
that
41:23
bad
41:23
thing
41:24
to
41:24
happen.
41:24
You
41:24
can
41:24
take
41:25
proactive
41:25
action
41:25
and
41:26
you
41:26
can
41:26
really
41:27
reduce
41:27
the
41:27
likelihood
41:28
that
41:28
you're
41:28
going
41:29
to
41:29
be
41:29
on
41:29
the
41:29
wrong
41:29
end
41:29
of
41:30
that.
41:30
And
41:30
whether
41:30
it's
41:30
following
41:31
some
41:31
of
41:31
these
41:31
annual
41:32
preparation
41:32
guides
41:33
or
41:33
when
41:33
it's
41:34
time
41:34
and
41:34
you've
41:34
got
41:34
resources
41:35
to
41:35
reroof
41:36
or
41:36
replace
41:36
your
41:37
garage
41:37
door,
41:37
you're
41:37
making
41:38
smart
41:38
investments
41:38
along
41:39
those
41:39
lines.
41:39
You
41:40
can,
41:40
you
41:40
can
41:40
do
41:40
a
41:41
lot
41:41
to
41:41
manage
41:42
your
41:42
personal
41:42
risk,
41:43
which
41:43
can
41:43
change
41:43
the
41:44
outcome
41:44
pretty
41:45
significantly.
41:46
Yeah,
41:46
and
41:47
that's
41:47
a
41:47
great
41:47
point,
41:48
Fred.
41:48
So
41:48
one
41:48
other
41:49
question
41:49
for
41:49
you
41:49
here
41:49
before
41:50
we
41:50
run
41:50
out
41:50
of
41:50
time
41:51
is
41:51
you
41:51
guys
41:52
are
41:52
always
41:52
working
41:52
in
41:52
the
41:53
future.
41:53
You're
41:53
always
41:54
looking
41:54
ahead.
41:55
What
41:55
are
41:55
some
41:55
of
41:55
the
41:55
exciting
41:56
things
41:56
that
41:56
you
41:56
guys
41:56
are
41:56
working
41:57
on
41:57
right
41:57
now?
41:57
Or
41:58
what
41:58
are
41:58
some
41:58
of
41:58
the
41:58
things
41:58
we
41:58
haven't
41:59
discussed?
42:00
Yeah,
42:00
I
42:00
think,
42:00
you
42:00
know,
42:01
we
42:01
continue
42:01
to
42:02
dig
42:02
into
42:02
how
42:03
roofs
42:03
are
42:03
aging
42:04
and
42:04
how
42:04
different
42:04
materials
42:05
work.
42:05
We're
42:05
looking
42:06
at
42:06
emerging
42:06
technologies
42:07
like
42:07
solar
42:08
shingles.
42:08
We're
42:09
looking
42:09
at
42:09
different
42:10
building
42:10
systems
42:11
like
42:11
ICF
42:12
or
42:12
3D
42:13
printed
42:13
houses.
42:14
All
42:14
of
42:14
those
42:14
things
42:15
that
42:15
are
42:15
starting
42:15
to
42:15
emerge
42:16
and
42:16
looking
42:17
to
42:17
be
42:17
responses
42:18
and
42:18
answers
42:19
to
42:19
a
42:19
variety
42:20
of
42:20
different,
42:20
different
42:21
needs
42:21
out
42:21
there.
42:21
Whether
42:21
it's
42:22
energy
42:22
efficiency
42:23
and
42:23
the
42:23
like.
42:23
We're
42:24
just
42:24
trying
42:24
to
42:24
make
42:24
sure
42:25
that
42:25
people
42:25
don't
42:25
have
42:26
to
42:26
choose
42:26
one
42:26
or
42:27
the
42:27
other.
42:27
Can
42:28
you
42:28
choose
42:28
something
42:28
that's
42:29
gonna,
42:29
that's
42:29
gonna
42:30
be
42:30
an
42:31
energy
42:31
efficient
42:31
choice,
42:32
but
42:32
also
42:32
a
42:32
really
42:33
durable
42:33
choice?
42:34
So
42:34
those
42:34
are
42:34
some
42:34
of
42:34
the
42:34
things
42:34
that
42:35
we're
42:35
working
42:35
on
42:35
here
42:36
at
42:36
ibhs.
42:36
And
42:37
as
42:37
we
42:37
study
42:38
things
42:38
like
42:39
wildfire
42:39
or
42:39
wind
42:40
or
42:40
hail,
42:41
if
42:41
we
42:41
can
42:41
devise
42:42
different
42:42
techniques
42:43
or
42:43
changes
42:44
to
42:44
existing
42:44
standards,
42:45
we're
42:45
going
42:45
to
42:45
lean
42:45
in
42:46
and
42:46
do
42:46
that.
42:47
But
42:47
one
42:47
thing
42:47
you
42:47
can
42:48
really
42:48
count
42:48
on
42:48
is
42:48
that
42:49
as
42:49
we
42:50
get
42:50
that
42:50
good
42:50
science,
42:51
we'll
42:51
put
42:51
it
42:52
into
42:52
one
42:52
of
42:52
our
42:52
designation
42:53
programs.
42:53
So
42:54
get
42:54
it
42:54
out
42:54
there
42:54
so
42:54
homeowners
42:55
can
42:55
have
42:55
access
42:56
to
42:56
it
42:56
because
42:56
it's,
42:56
it's
42:57
doesn't
42:57
really
42:57
do
42:57
any
42:57
good
42:58
to
42:58
learn
42:58
all
42:58
those
42:58
great
42:58
lessons
42:59
and
42:59
then
42:59
keep
42:59
it
42:59
all
42:59
to
43:00
ourselves.
43:00
We
43:00
wanted
43:00
to
43:00
get
43:00
it
43:01
out
43:01
for
43:01
people
43:01
to
43:02
use
43:02
it.
43:03
You
43:03
guys
43:03
do
43:03
such
43:04
a
43:04
great
43:04
job
43:05
with
43:05
that.
43:05
It's
43:05
something
43:06
that's
43:06
always
43:06
great
43:06
to
43:07
see
43:07
what
43:07
you
43:07
guys
43:07
are
43:07
doing
43:08
and,
43:08
and
43:08
how
43:09
you're
43:09
changing
43:09
the
43:09
building
43:10
industry
43:10
and
43:11
making
43:11
it
43:11
so
43:11
much
43:12
safer
43:12
for
43:12
people
43:12
out
43:13
there
43:13
to,
43:13
to
43:14
greet
43:14
homes.
43:14
They're
43:14
Going
43:15
to
43:15
be
43:15
more
43:15
resilient.
43:16
And
43:16
you
43:17
guys
43:17
do
43:17
such
43:17
a
43:17
great
43:18
live
43:18
testing
43:19
program
43:19
and,
43:19
and
43:20
really
43:20
the
43:20
only
43:20
people
43:21
out
43:21
there
43:21
doing
43:21
this,
43:21
which
43:22
is
43:22
so
43:23
fun
43:23
with
43:24
what
43:24
you
43:24
guys
43:24
are
43:24
doing
43:25
with
43:25
the
43:25
wind
43:25
tunnel
43:26
and
43:26
how
43:26
you
43:26
can
43:27
create
43:27
real
43:27
life
43:28
situations
43:29
in
43:29
basically
43:30
your
43:30
own
43:30
laboratory.
43:31
Yeah,
43:31
we've
43:32
got
43:32
a
43:32
one
43:32
of
43:32
a
43:32
kind
43:32
wind
43:33
tunnel.
43:33
If
43:33
people
43:33
haven't
43:34
seen
43:34
it,
43:34
check
43:34
us
43:34
out@ibhs.org
43:36
or
43:36
go
43:37
to
43:37
YouTube
43:37
and
43:37
look
43:38
at
43:38
IBHS
43:38
wind
43:39
or
43:39
fire.
43:40
You'll
43:40
see
43:40
our
43:41
research
43:41
center.
43:41
It's,
43:42
it's
43:42
a
43:42
pretty
43:42
impressive
43:43
site.
43:43
We've
43:43
got
43:43
a,
43:43
we've
43:44
got
43:44
a
43:44
fan
43:44
array
43:45
of
43:45
105
43:46
fans,
43:46
350
43:47
horsepower
43:47
piece.
43:48
We
43:48
can
43:48
create
43:49
up
43:49
to
43:50
130
43:50
mile
43:50
an
43:50
hour
43:51
winds,
43:51
8
43:51
inches
43:51
of
43:52
rain
43:52
per
43:52
hour.
43:53
We've
43:53
figured
43:53
out
43:54
a
43:54
way
43:54
to
43:54
create
43:54
realistic
43:55
hail
43:55
in
43:56
a
43:56
laboratory
43:56
environment
43:56
so
43:57
we
43:57
don't
43:57
have
43:57
to
43:57
rely
43:57
on
43:58
things
43:58
like
43:58
steel
43:58
balls.
43:59
And
43:59
we
43:59
know
43:59
how
43:59
to
44:00
shoot
44:00
it
44:00
at
44:00
houses.
44:01
We
44:01
did
44:01
one
44:01
hail
44:01
demo
44:02
that
44:02
had
44:02
10,000
44:03
stones
44:03
in
44:04
it
44:04
and
44:05
we
44:05
have
44:05
a
44:05
wildfire
44:06
capability
44:06
like
44:06
nobody
44:07
else
44:07
does.
44:07
And
44:07
what
44:08
that
44:08
does
44:08
is
44:08
it
44:08
allows
44:09
us
44:09
to
44:09
build
44:09
full
44:09
size
44:10
structures
44:11
and
44:11
then
44:11
look
44:11
at
44:11
how
44:12
they
44:12
interact
44:12
and
44:13
how
44:13
the
44:13
hazard
44:14
is
44:14
putting
44:15
stress
44:15
on
44:16
all
44:16
the
44:16
systems.
44:17
So
44:17
we
44:17
could
44:17
really
44:18
understand
44:18
how
44:18
the
44:18
house
44:19
is
44:19
going
44:19
to
44:19
work
44:19
as
44:19
a
44:20
complete
44:20
package
44:21
and
44:21
then
44:21
we
44:21
can
44:22
engineer
44:22
and
44:23
look
44:23
for
44:23
ways
44:24
to
44:25
solve
44:25
those
44:25
weak
44:26
spots.
44:26
So
44:27
that's,
44:27
it's
44:27
pretty
44:27
cool.
44:28
We're
44:28
all
44:28
the
44:28
only
44:28
place
44:29
in
44:29
the
44:29
world
44:29
that
44:29
can
44:29
do
44:29
some
44:29
of
44:30
that
44:30
stuff.
44:31
Yeah.
44:31
That
44:31
is
44:31
amazing.
44:32
That
44:32
is
44:32
amazing.
44:33
So
44:33
Fred,
44:33
just
44:34
so
44:34
people
44:34
know,
44:34
where
44:34
do
44:35
people
44:35
find
44:35
more
44:35
information
44:36
for
44:36
you
44:37
guys?
44:37
Because
44:37
again,
44:38
I
44:38

44:38
we
44:38

44:40
so
44:40
people
44:40
can
44:41
find
44:41
out
44:41
more
44:41
information
44:41
if
44:42
they're
44:42
looking
44:42
to
44:42
put
44:42
a
44:42
new
44:43
roof
44:43
on
44:43
or
44:44
they're
44:44
trying
44:44
to
44:44
do
44:45
more
44:45
to
44:45
fortify
44:46
their
44:46
home
44:46
against
44:46
mother
44:47
nature.
44:47
