- 2:24Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast episode 53.
- 2:29I'm joined as always by both my Co hosts.
- 2:32Owen Smith dialed in on a Monday afternoon.
- 2:34How are you doing, Owen? I'm doing well, Hada.
- 2:37I'm looking to be here actually. I got attacked by a bird and the
- 2:40dog this morning on my run. So yeah, just happy to be here
- 2:45talking to you guys. Shit, sounds like you've had a
- 2:48few problems. I spoke to you yesterday and you
- 2:50tell me about your headphone scenario as well.
- 2:53Boys. The last I think they come in
- 2:56three of these things so the dog nearly had my headphones and
- 3:00they got attacked by a bird and a dog chased me.
- 3:02So hopefully asked three out of the way.
- 3:04I'm just on a Teen Rd. night till the weekend where I'm
- 3:07racing. So yeah, I just left myself in a
- 3:10room that you apologize. And welcome also to Dean.
- 3:14How are you doing? Just fresh off a gym session.
- 3:18Fresh off a lift? No, no dogs or birds, just
- 3:22smooth sailing over here. I think you're pretty stronger.
- 3:29I have been watching, we're going off paced already, but
- 3:34have you ever watched that? Anatoly?
- 3:36Is that his lift videos as this guy walks around the gym and
- 3:40he's like 79 kilos and he lifts over 300 kilos and he just goes
- 3:45up to gym Bros and makes him look bad.
- 3:47But I'm channelling that when I'm on a Monday afternoon.
- 3:51Travana Find a Lift PR. No, but you know, when the guy
- 3:56we were talking about did a week Christian Canes or whatever, is
- 4:01he planning to run 215 in genes or is he just planning to like
- 4:07run or 216 in genes or just plan to run 216?
- 4:11I think just trying to run 26. I think he just wants to make
- 4:14the qualifier. It's hard to know if it's a
- 4:16genes on or genes off run. I don't follow it that quite
- 4:19true it. Because he ran.
- 4:21He ran and I want to say Austin Marathon, which is pretty hilly,
- 4:25I think. And you, I'm like 237 in jeans
- 4:29again, so you can see, like, yeah.
- 4:32Yeah, why would you do it to yourself?
- 4:33Running jeans. Ever.
- 4:35The chafe. Would be horrific, but I don't
- 4:41like that was Speaking of us some press who runs marathons
- 4:43and jeans. It could be where we end up,
- 4:48Ryan, where you've, you're talking to me on the weekend
- 4:51about how you want to shave your legs and just ride full time.
- 4:55If that gets us some traction then so be it, I'll put the
- 4:57jeans on on the bike. OK?
- 5:02Anyway, thanks to the listeners for being here with us as well.
- 5:06I don't know how much I want to give away, but if you're
- 5:09listening to this now, you're in for a massive week and easy
- 5:13double. We've got a lot of content
- 5:15coming your way in the next 7 to 10 days.
- 5:17There's going to be two interviews dropping, one from
- 5:22our inside of the pond or Great Britain and Ireland.
- 5:26Won't give too much away there. And then the other one is a
- 5:30current Australian record holder.
- 5:32Won't say any more than that. So 2 very exciting interviews
- 5:35coming your way there. One of them may have featured
- 5:39quite highly in the People's champ votes of our end of season
- 5:42awards last year. And then also we've got a very
- 5:47exciting mini series in the Build Up to London Marathon
- 5:50which will be being released this week.
- 5:53And I'll allow the guys on that to introduce themselves as it
- 5:57hits your ears. But yeah, you're going to need
- 6:00approximately 5 to 6 hours worth of listening time.
- 6:03And if your listeners this now and those episodes have dropped,
- 6:05I will not be offended if you pause and don't come back to our
- 6:08episode. How this episode looks.
- 6:13We've got some results in the way of the Castillo 10K shock.
- 6:17Another fast 10K in Spain. There was more indoor action in
- 6:21Luvan. I think that was in Belgium.
- 6:23Keely ran a world record box. He'll burn over in Victoria and
- 6:28Osaka Marathon as well in Japan. News wise, we've seen some
- 6:34outfly floors out on the road and some injury news from
- 6:38Fenkelbal. Unfortunately we've got the
- 6:40listener Q&A to get through, which we didn't touch last week
- 6:44because we are waiting for Owen's Fire and Double Trouble
- 6:48in YouTube Diaries as always. So I guess.
- 6:54I'd just like to let you guys know that I actually do listen
- 6:57to the episodes. So I I did hear you guys shout
- 7:01about me behind my back, but we'll leave it there.
- 7:05We'll we'll probably have to have a word with AD and D And
- 7:07she must have listened on his behalf and told him she.
- 7:10Snitched. Oh, he's got, I reckon he's just
- 7:17got a few people working for him now on the scene.
- 7:19An island. The listeners.
- 7:21It's got informants, yeah. So what don't you say?
- 7:27Right then, Levon indoors meet in Belgium, as we had on our
- 7:31chat with Matt Sadden last week. It was looking like Keely was
- 7:35going to go for a world record, and that she did.
- 7:37So the women's 800 meters indoors over there.
- 7:41Keely ran from the front came first by over 4 1/2 seconds in
- 7:45an indoor world record of 154.87.
- 7:49Audrey Wearo, who's been huge on the scene in the past couple of
- 7:52years, been one of their main rivals, was second 158, And
- 7:57Sigai, the Guma of Ethiopia, who's also usually quite
- 8:00prominent there, than 158 high. Any thoughts?
- 8:08I mean, I don't know, first First thought is, as you
- 8:11mentioned, like second and third are people that were in
- 8:15contesting for medals, weren't they in the world champs final
- 8:18for the 800 meters? So very respectable athletes in
- 8:23their own right. And then to to what are they 3
- 8:251/2 seconds behind Keely? And you could see it looks
- 8:29worse, doesn't it? It looks more pronounced on an
- 8:31indoor track, the gap. But it was like, yeah, it was
- 8:36phenomenal. The like to gap everyone your
- 8:40peers by so much. Pretty outrageous.
- 8:44She looked so strong, didn't she?
- 8:46She just like a level above the rest.
- 8:49And you'd like to think like if Anca Ball was in it and she took
- 8:53it out even harder. Like, what does Katie do again?
- 8:56And yeah, she's just so, so hot. When I was listening to, I think
- 9:02it was her interview afterwards, she says someone asked her about
- 9:05the break. So apparently on the 200 meter
- 9:09indoor track, up until I don't know when it was exactly, but
- 9:13very recently, they broke after 50 meters, which means that just
- 9:18one bend there, they would then, you know, have to find the way
- 9:21over to the rail and fight for a spot.
- 9:23And it's been changed to might been 165 or 150 at least anyway.
- 9:28So they all hold position for like almost a whole lap.
- 9:32And fair play to him, Jonathan Gaul, like we say, how
- 9:36knowledgeable he is. Last week, before she'd done
- 9:39this, he was talking about how that is influencing these fast
- 9:42times on the indoor scene that we're seeing this year.
- 9:45And then Keely kind of confirms it.
- 9:47And she says, yeah, it's just so much better to.
- 9:50If you think of it from her point of view, she's trying to
- 9:52race to the front because she knows she's the best.
- 9:55So she doesn't have to fight to get across.
- 9:58She can just naturally let her fast opening lap take her to the
- 10:01front. And you can see how much of an
- 10:05impact that has on the runners. Like Sam rooted in his mile with
- 10:09Cole Hawker, like, he was fighting for so long to try and
- 10:13hit the rail and they just wouldn't let him in.
- 10:15So like, when you have the sort of the 150 meters to try and
- 10:18settle and sort of get moving, it does help you sort of relax.
- 10:21And yeah, you can see like all the indoor times records have
- 10:24been broken recently. Well, we know the difference on
- 10:28a 400 meter track when you're going running in lane 2 versus
- 10:31lane one and what's it doubled on a 200 meter track, The effect
- 10:36of that because you're running twice the bends to do a full
- 10:39lap. So the cost to you in terms of
- 10:41mileage having to run wide is, is huge.
- 10:44So everyone knows I need to hug the rail.
- 10:45So that makes the race dynamics a lot more interesting, which is
- 10:50good. Yeah, and I know with Femka's
- 10:55run the other week, the big thing was like how fast she went
- 10:58out for the 1st 200 was into like 27 flat, and I think
- 11:03Keely's here was 26 something like the pacemaker just nailed
- 11:08it. And in fairness to Keely, she
- 11:10didn't, you can't use the word blow up in a world record run,
- 11:15but she didn't back off as much as you may have thought she
- 11:18would after opening in like 26 odd seconds.
- 11:22But yeah, do you think she can? Can she take the outdoor world
- 11:25record? Because as it stands now, it's
- 11:27those two, I don't even know where they're from, like
- 11:29Czechoslovakia or something from 50 and odd years ago who sit
- 11:34above a 153 something. Can she get it done this year?
- 11:40It'd be cool. It'd be nice just to erase those
- 11:42records from that. Because we already know, let's
- 11:47be real. If anyone isn't aware please
- 11:50look up that female outdoor 800 meter world record and go to
- 11:55images and you'll see why there is massive question marks.
- 12:02Shades of Ryan 2021 about them. Basically, it's basically Dean
- 12:07in the gym, what Dean looks like in the gym now.
- 12:11But I think she could do it. That's what she's pushing for
- 12:14this year. And there's no majors she can
- 12:16like, yeah, I think she'll be. She'd be.
- 12:18That's what that's her main goal probably is to get out the world
- 12:21record. And she'd say, like, it's
- 12:23inevitable. It's just a matter of when.
- 12:26It's funny though, I had one of her interviews, I think it was
- 12:29after that, when she ran the Heaths at British Indoors the
- 12:31other week and she says something like, oh, you know,
- 12:35like the weather's always good. And I know what she means,
- 12:38obviously, like it's still conditions, but it just still
- 12:42doesn't sound quite right. Like obviously the weather's
- 12:45good. You bloody inside.
- 12:48Yeah, it's what the it's what the Irish say in January.
- 12:52Love the indoor indoor weather? We still haven't seen a dry day
- 12:57yet so. Did you say, do you say that, do
- 13:00we share that on social? The that post that was about
- 13:05yeah, no dry days in Ireland yet in 2026.
- 13:09Yeah, there's floods like it's even though yesterday was sunny,
- 13:13well, like not sunny, but like blue skies.
- 13:17So yeah, we're getting there. Shit, did you get endorphins off
- 13:21that we outside run taking it all in.
- 13:23My vitamin D went through the roof and I don't know, I was
- 13:28chatting. By the bird attacked him, didn't
- 13:30know what to do with itself. I was, I was chatting to people
- 13:33at this. I was like, would you rather
- 13:35like a really, really shit winter if that meant you get a
- 13:39really, really good summer? Or would you rather just like
- 13:41mediocrity, like the whole way through the year And like, I
- 13:45don't know, I think I'd rather just like the middle the whole
- 13:47way through the year because the winter guys, I was actually
- 13:49contemplating like moving back to Australia.
- 13:51It was, it's so, so hard to do. Like if you're, if you're
- 13:55planning like like a March, February marathon, that whole
- 14:00crit, it's hell. It's not, it's actually not fun.
- 14:02Like you'd like to run on a treadmill until you actually
- 14:05have to do it like 5-6 days a week.
- 14:10Oh, and just to give Dean and the Australian listeners an
- 14:13insight, people would often say, wouldn't they?
- 14:16Like they would take the harsh winters on the chin if it meant
- 14:20that all's what they would ask for is 2 weeks of solid nice hot
- 14:25weather in the sunshine in the winter, in the summer, rather
- 14:28two weeks people had killed for. Would you in Australia get like
- 14:35freaking like 810 months of it? Well, it's going to be 37.
- 14:41Is it tomorrow or Wednesday? So it could it gets too hot. 35
- 14:49and 36 tomorrow, Wednesday. We're going to lose from the
- 14:54He's going to hand his notice in on the podcast if we have all.
- 14:57Right, let's get out of here. Let's move on.
- 15:00All right, there was also a 1500 meter meet at Livon where
- 15:03Georgia hunts a bell after scratching at British indoors
- 15:06the week prior. Four days prior she took the win
- 15:09in 4 flat .21 from some pretty talented runners in this race as
- 15:14well. Two Ethiopians, Berka Halem and
- 15:16Sarah Berry were second and third, just behind that and
- 15:20Gemma Ricci. The Brit was also back and forth
- 15:23after just winning British indoors the week prior.
- 15:27So I guess this is of interest because Georgia Hunter Bell is
- 15:30scheduled to come to Melbourne in four or five weeks time and
- 15:34there's a little bit of a scare after she scratched it indoors,
- 15:37but looks like we're on. Yeah, it's a good run. 4
- 15:41minutes. I just think she was a nice run
- 15:46and I think she was a nice run in UK and Doors.
- 15:49Well, and as we learned, right, like what was the, what's the
- 15:52incentive? Exactly.
- 15:55If they can navigate a way through it without technically
- 15:58having to go, then. They'll do.
- 16:03There's a 2000m race which was won by Australia's Jess Hull in
- 16:07526 from Salome Alfonso, Portugal and Agathe Guillemot of
- 16:12France. They were 4 seconds back and six
- 16:15seconds back respectively. So comfortable win for Jess.
- 16:20On paper. It's an Australian national
- 16:22record for the 2000 meters indoors to go with her 2K world
- 16:27record on the outdoor track, and Dean's Justin that she might
- 16:31have got a handy payday for taking that world record, which
- 16:34I'm sure would have been part of the strategy and targets in this
- 16:38race. Yeah, I don't know, like is
- 16:42that's how these contracts are structured, aren't they?
- 16:44So, and it's so interesting where they seem to delineate
- 16:49between indoors and outdoors for a national record.
- 16:53So it seems like the thing to do, doesn't it?
- 16:58Yeah, and yours. And sorry, and Ryan, I'm
- 17:02stealing your show notes here, but for context, what's that 7
- 17:05seconds off the National, the world record she ran for outdoor
- 17:102000 meters? Yeah.
- 17:14So it goes to show it was it was a soft record and it was up for
- 17:17grabs. Yeah, because I mean, we're
- 17:21talking about the 800 meters, which I mean is less than half
- 17:26in terms of distance and therefore time.
- 17:29But Keely was what, within a second of the outdoor record or
- 17:34or or about a second away from the outdoor record?
- 17:37Whereas 7 seconds. Like.
- 17:39If this was a more comparable performance to her outdoor
- 17:42record, you would think it would be more like 5/21/22 maybe?
- 17:51Yeah, it's, it's a funny way, this one, because I was looking
- 17:53at it a couple of ways at first. I looked at it like, oh, well,
- 17:56she has run considerably fast to herself outdoors.
- 17:59Therefore it is what it is. It's a good run.
- 18:03She's got the record, but kind of no need to sensationalize it.
- 18:07But then you look and what she's done to the rest of the field
- 18:11and they're all still like very good athletes in themselves.
- 18:14That guy Lemos from France really stands out as a name and
- 18:19Rebe Walcott Nolan, she's like one of the best middle distance
- 18:23girls for Great Britain. She's beaten her by 9 seconds so
- 18:27don't know what to make of it. I.
- 18:30Mean it's not bad going, is it? Like what's a 243 pace 22243
- 18:40kilometers back-to-back? It's it's moving.
- 18:44Just follow the wave light, head down and hope for the best.
- 18:48There was a women's 3K which was won by Ethiopia's Frewani Hilu.
- 18:55Ethiopian was second as well, but awake.
- 18:57And then of note, Nadia Bataclati broke her own national
- 19:02record in 3rd 826 I think. Oh yeah, she just missed the
- 19:07European record of Laura Muir by three hundredths of a second.
- 19:11So, I mean, given she already had the national record herself,
- 19:15she probably wasn't really targeting that.
- 19:17She would have been targeting the European record.
- 19:19So close but no cigar in Australia's Lauren Ryan.
- 19:27Oh yeah, yeah, was what, 7th? I was just going to comment on
- 19:30Nadia's Patacledes run. Like feel like that's a little
- 19:34bit of an upset given that she was what, two time outdoor
- 19:37medalist, wasn't she over the five and 10K last year?
- 19:41Like yes, I don't know. Like, I know you're dropping
- 19:46down in distance, but if you were to pick one before the race
- 19:50I reckon you would probably go Bataclede.
- 19:56Or at least I would have. Yeah, I'm not sure about the
- 19:59girl in second Al Shing Boaky, but hey, through any Halo I
- 20:05think stands out. But yeah, obviously.
- 20:08We know all about battle. Classy.
- 20:10She's got the medals to go with it.
- 20:14Lauren Ryan was 837 and looked at back at the world indoor
- 20:18standard is 835 S No doubt she would have been trying to seal
- 20:22that. Then she's come up slightly
- 20:23short. I'm probably doing, hey, little
- 20:28bit of a disservice there. She's two time indoor world
- 20:31champion so. You'll let her have it then,
- 20:35yeah? But like when that gorilla came
- 20:41second, that's only her season's best, so she's running faster
- 20:44than 8/26. Yeah, and Hayley's run 819.
- 20:50Indoor. Outdoor indoor about this time
- 20:52last year. Wow.
- 20:55I'd be happy with that at the weekend, yeah.
- 20:59Is that what you'd be shooting for, you think?
- 21:01I don't know, see. Yeah, 8:15, 8/10.
- 21:07Yeah, he'll see. There was a men's 800 meter,
- 21:10which didn't really mean too much to me, but then I've seen
- 21:14the guy who won was a Belgian guy, Elliot Creston.
- 21:17Never heard of him admittedly. And then I've seen the time was
- 21:21pretty quick, 143.91 and the guy, the guy in the past three
- 21:28weeks alone in February 2026 as round three of the eleven,
- 21:33fastest ever. He's run 143 twice and 144 low
- 21:38in February. I don't know who he is.
- 21:42He's been around a lot, Yeah. He's sort of like an indoor like
- 21:47that's his jam. Get me?
- 21:49He's just a journeyman, is he? He's Belgian, not German.
- 21:55No, like a journey. I don't know, he's been around a
- 22:03while and boy, he's freaking good at the under 800.
- 22:08Yeah, right. Runs runs the Ben specialist.
- 22:12I was thinking I had the one to watch that was coming through
- 22:15low key but apparently not. He's closer to going the other
- 22:18way. Want to scratch off soon?
- 22:25And lastly from this meet, Adam Spencer warned the 1500 metres
- 22:30Adam Spencer of Australia surprise, surprise when
- 22:33qualifying standards are up for grabs and there's national
- 22:36jerseys on the line. He does what's needed to be done
- 22:39and he's ran himself the auto qualifier for World Indoors,
- 22:42just sneaking inside 336 with a 335.25 and Valentin Soccer, who
- 22:50we appear to say every single week runs himself and an area
- 22:55record for South America in second.
- 22:59This bloke's like a his manager must be like connected to horse
- 23:05racing. I think he's MTC.
- 23:13Fuck, give the poor bloke a spell.
- 23:17He's earning that cash. Yeah.
- 23:20What about the Irish blue Luke McCann in sick 3 sub 340?
- 23:25Do you know it much? And he ran, he ran a really fast
- 23:28and 800 there during the week. I think he got 147.
- 23:32He's got come back from an injury.
- 23:33He was out for like a year and a half.
- 23:36And so he's on his like, come back.
- 23:41What's happened to it? Yeah, no.
- 23:45Come from world record shape to last.
- 23:49Do you say the Irish fellas are not on effort or?
- 23:52Yeah, he trains. He's in that on Oceana or on
- 23:55Europe. Sorry.
- 23:58And that's live on, so the indoor circus goes on.
- 24:05Yeah, we're going to head across the ocean, don't know what
- 24:09ocean, but there was a race late last night or Sunday even in
- 24:12America and it's like last chance be if so on that really
- 24:16fast track. And there was there was a mile
- 24:19for the men, women a 3K and then a 5K as well.
- 24:24So in the men's, the one mile was won by Jack Anstey in 352.
- 24:31And then just another little another note mention is James
- 24:34Gormley from Ireland. He ran 353.38, which is which is
- 24:40pretty good going in the women's side.
- 24:43Rachel MacArthur Cooper tears other half.
- 24:46She won it in 427. Helen.
- 24:54Yeah, Helen. She ran 427.93.
- 24:59And then at Lauren Ryan, she's a busy woman.
- 25:02She ran 428.48 in the men. She's.
- 25:07Gone from Belgium on Thursday to Boston on Sunday.
- 25:13Yeah. Wow.
- 25:17Yeah, What's the standard for the women's fifteens?
- 25:21I don't know what the mile equivalent is.
- 25:24Four O 6, don't know. Yeah, what she ran.
- 25:31So four O 6 for the 15 and she is after running 428?
- 25:35Surely not. I know Lauren Ryan is more of a
- 25:39distance girl than running a mile, but to be honest, I didn't
- 25:42realize Rachel MacArthur was even at the level to be able to
- 25:46put Lauren Ryan away in a mile race.
- 25:50Oh, she's good lad. Yeah.
- 25:53Yeah, she's in a band. And in the men's 3K, this is
- 25:58probably the big one. And Ernest Chariot from Arkansas
- 26:01around 740, some roofed the young New Zealand guy here on
- 26:07743, which I don't know if he'll be too happy.
- 26:11He'll just be like, Nah, I think he was hoping to run sub 740 but
- 26:17still like in under 20 New Zealand record.
- 26:19And now he's got the whole thing from like the 5K today 100 and
- 26:23which is crazy for a 16 year old.
- 26:25And then third was Brian Masai from Arkansas as well here on
- 26:28740 three another not mentioned, Henry Mclucky, he's UK based,
- 26:34he's around 803 so. Did you see some roof on Well,
- 26:40some roof and Santana on the Coffee club, have you heard
- 26:43that? That's why I said he was hoping.
- 26:46I think he was hoping for faster.
- 26:48Yeah, it's good. It's good lesson, isn't it?
- 26:50The way that the Coffee Club hosts are like, they're on the
- 26:56circuit themselves, the top level athletes, but they're just
- 26:58so chill and like take the piss. They're they're an easy listen,
- 27:02aren't they? And they make it like quite
- 27:03funny calling them Big Sam and Little Sam.
- 27:08Except no, Little Sam is sort of Big Sam because he's faster.
- 27:13I couldn't believe it when like, obviously you know, he's young,
- 27:16like 16. It is what it is.
- 27:18But then when they're talking about the potential for him to
- 27:21go to college and race on the NCAA circuit and he's like
- 27:25saying himself, well, it's 2 1/2 years away.
- 27:31It's outrageous. They're also saying that like he
- 27:35can't do world indoors because he'll have to miss too much
- 27:38school and then he's going to do that barram a mile and later on.
- 27:44So he has to sort of like pick and choose when he can like miss
- 27:46because fair enough in Europe and all, like they've got
- 27:50somewhere off. But it's the other way around in
- 27:53Australia. So he has to actually like pick
- 27:55and choose on when he misses skill.
- 27:57Yeah, it's just a very strange situation for a 16 year old to
- 28:00be in. He was telling them, wasn't he,
- 28:03that he's managed to negotiate like drop in first period
- 28:06basically so he can train in the morning and just head in at like
- 28:10mid morning. And he was saying it like
- 28:12straight faced, just it is what it is.
- 28:15And like Morgan and Ollie were like couldn't believe it, like,
- 28:19oh, why don't you get rid of last period whilst you're at it,
- 28:22like taking the piss. But this guy, it's just normal
- 28:25to him. He's like, so funny.
- 28:28But he doesn't seem to run that often like he only does like
- 28:321900 KA week. So he he just runs once a day
- 28:36nearly. If that yeah, I think you're
- 28:38saying he's done. I think I heard his dad saying
- 28:40he's done not not up to double S And yeah, it's maybe like 7080
- 28:45KA week. Yeah, it was, it was sick.
- 28:50And then when he done like a bit of a loose training week and his
- 28:53easy days was like A9K run one day, A12K run the other day.
- 28:58His sessions were like nothing crazy.
- 29:01He was just like I might do 5 by AK on a Saturday and then some 4
- 29:07hundreds in the week and he totaled his case up as like 1890
- 29:11K and you're like it's actually sickening how you can be that
- 29:15good off such like simplistic low volume training.
- 29:19No altitude, No, you know. He's just like a one in a
- 29:24million type guy and really, isn't he?
- 29:28Bit of talent. And back to Boston, right?
- 29:31Women's 3K, just I just picked out Alexandra Alex Millard from
- 29:35the UK. She's New Balance out late.
- 29:37She ran 849 to come third. Yeah, no, I'm crazy there.
- 29:42And the men's 5K, Parker Wolf 1, he ran 12:59.
- 29:46So I think that's the first time he's gone under 13.
- 29:50Evans Brew Rui from Washington, he ran 1327 and Woody Kincaid,
- 29:56another night out late, he ran 1330, which I don't think he'd
- 30:01be too happy with. The women's 800, the Irish
- 30:05indoor national record went down.
- 30:07Maeve O'Neill, she runs for Providence and she ran 2 minutes
- 30:13and 33 seconds. So yeah, she's I'd say it's only
- 30:18a matter of time for an Irish woman.
- 30:20Like nails that sub two-minute barrier.
- 30:24And so does that mean it's the records faster in the outdoors
- 30:28someone's broke 2 minutes of they?
- 30:31Pretty sure yeah, it's faster. As well, Did she?
- 30:37She was on one at the start of the season last year, wasn't
- 30:40she? Sarah Haley, pretty sure,
- 30:41remember. She must be injured because she
- 30:44hasn't raced any indoors yet and she won an indoor world
- 30:47championship last year. Packer Wolf feels like while
- 30:51you're finding that Packer Wolf feels like the top American male
- 30:55at the minute, I think. Don't you?
- 30:57Would you agree? I'm pretty sure that he's.
- 31:01Just. As well.
- 31:04Oh really? It says the 100 meter is
- 31:07Roseanne Galligan who ran 200.58.
- 31:13I thought someone went under and Sonia Sullivan has the 1K to the
- 31:1810K. Monopolize the Irish record
- 31:22books. Yeah, actually, just while we're
- 31:26on Irish national records, Andrew Kosgren and he ran in
- 31:30France during the week, he lowered his own.
- 31:32He ran 333.09 and he ran very like, well, like he was pushing
- 31:40the pace the whole way and he just got caught near the end.
- 31:42I was like, no, there. I feel like if he didn't win the
- 31:47world championship he wouldn't be as good as he is now.
- 31:49I don't know. I think when and that gives you
- 31:50so much confidence and belief in yourself, that just brings one
- 31:53another level. And he ran at same race he won
- 31:57in 332.44. But yeah, I'm going to beat up
- 32:02Andrew Coster now at the weekend, him, Griggs and Michael
- 32:05Haney all in the 3K, so hopefully not get lapped.
- 32:11It's actually going to be hard. Not together you'll.
- 32:13Be on the in the start. Same field as them as well.
- 32:16Fingers crossed will be in the A race, yeah.
- 32:18I mean, it's a chance they go, what, 745?
- 32:23Yeah, it just depends on what way they run it, really.
- 32:25Yeah, they can do what they want.
- 32:26I don't think there'll be a 730, like 740 maybe, maybe like 750
- 32:32or something like that. Just a big kick down.
- 32:34Yeah. Goal is not to get lapped.
- 32:37OK. So what's the cut off for you to
- 32:39get lap then if it's going to be 30 seconds?
- 32:41The odd second laps if you run, don't want to put a time on it.
- 32:47But yeah, if they're going sub 7:45-ish then you're in trouble,
- 32:51aren't you? I'm in serious.
- 32:57It's actually, I think there'll be a stream as well so you can
- 33:01are we going over? Are you going for a slap on
- 33:02this? Do I get laughed or not?
- 33:06And Andrew will be on the last lap and he'll be, he'll see the
- 33:09back of you and he'll be like, shit, there's Owen.
- 33:11I'm going to get him and you'll like pull them over the finish
- 33:14line. Yeah, I'll be that day 10 that
- 33:17like doesn't move out of lane one.
- 33:18I was just like taking a poll lane.
- 33:23Now you won't get lap. Fingers crossed, yeah, you'll
- 33:29it'll be slow enough for you to survive, retain integrity.
- 33:36Like there's some big like when you're thinking about like under
- 33:39Costco in 730, Nick Griggs 732, and then Don Mclahaney is like
- 33:4373536. Like, they're three of the best
- 33:45in the world, arguably. And well, yeah, Andrew was
- 33:50literally. Running in the final of the
- 33:53men's 1500 in the last major champs, so yeah.
- 33:58So how have you gone from standing on an indoor track for
- 34:01the first time a couple of weeks ago to now stand on the indoor
- 34:05track for the second time against these lot?
- 34:09Tell me, I don't know, like it's like it be very fast.
- 34:13I just don't want to get lapped now.
- 34:16That's the main thing. Good sick experience so.
- 34:21Stop it sure, even like looking back at national fight K last
- 34:24year, like where from get a out of cost ground like it's just
- 34:28you'd be on the same starline these guys.
- 34:29It's pretty cool. So that's why it's sort of nice
- 34:31to see these run in the national champs, whereas the Brits just
- 34:35find a way to like not run it. Like I guarantee you the indoor
- 34:40arena and Dublin is going to be after you packed and just to see
- 34:44like because all the Irish athletes come home.
- 34:46I don't think the wonder she died like if she won't come
- 34:48home, but a lot of the main ones will be there.
- 34:50And like Irish running is on an all time high that like these
- 34:53guys are actually genuinely some of the best in the world.
- 34:56So it's so cool to see them. Like even we're not them.
- 35:01What was the like prerequisite for you to get a start
- 35:05basically? So anyone can like actually
- 35:10enter it just be a powerful club and then you put down like your
- 35:14PB or a time you want to run and then they split you into heats.
- 35:17So I think there's like 56 entered.
- 35:20Like Andrews closed last night, I think there's like 56 actually
- 35:23like 3000 mirror male lads running.
- 35:26So they'll have like AC race, AB race and an A race and fingers
- 35:31crossed while being there is. It's just come to me then that,
- 35:35you know, when we're speaking about live on before one of our
- 35:37listeners was that was actually their trackside and they were
- 35:40sending a few videos through to the Instagram accounts.
- 35:42Like it looks so sick. And the guy, I think he must be
- 35:47a student in France because when I was messaging him back and
- 35:51forth, he said after the meet, yeah, I'm just jogging back home
- 35:55to France now. So Livonne must be like very
- 35:57much on the border, Belgium and France.
- 36:00Is that your man, Luke, Dorothy or?
- 36:03Yeah, yeah. Yeah, he's American.
- 36:07Is he? Well, to be honest, because he
- 36:10was said he was living in France and his name's like Dushete, I
- 36:14was reading it as I thought he's a French guy.
- 36:17Of course, I think he's got an American club or something in
- 36:20his bio or something like that, or he's run some of his runs
- 36:23around America. I don't know.
- 36:25Yeah, it's cool. Easy double air everywhere.
- 36:28Yeah, I said I'll use some of his photos and videos for the
- 36:31post this week. And he was like, yeah, happy
- 36:33days. I asked him for some of Keely's
- 36:36run. He was like, no, I was just, I
- 36:37was in the moment. It's like fair.
- 36:39Play respect that. Yeah, but use talking about
- 36:44Costco and reminded me of it because I think he got some sick
- 36:48footage. Right.
- 36:52Let's wrap the results up. Box Hill burn happened.
- 36:55Was it Thursday night over in Melbourne.
- 36:59Bit of shame on the back of Perth track Classic that the 5K
- 37:02there was so weak and then the 5K here was so deep.
- 37:05But you know, these guys, they're going to make sensible
- 37:08decisions if, if they can all RIP a fast 5K half an hour up
- 37:12the road, then that's what they're going to do.
- 37:15So the field was Liam Cashin, Adam Goddard, Calm Davis, Seth
- 37:20O'Donnell, Brett Robinson, so very deep domestic field.
- 37:24And then Brett was stepping down from his marathon and half
- 37:27marathons, switching it off. And he's had a bit of a tough
- 37:31time of it recently. So it was fantastic to see him
- 37:34get the win in 1328 over Seth who done as usual going off the
- 37:39front 1329. He ended up finishing second and
- 37:44Carl Davis battled on for 3rd, 30 and 31.
- 37:48Did you watch the stream? Thoughts.
- 37:53Stream was good and race wise like I think set doing settings
- 37:58I just don't think he might have had an injury or something post
- 38:00worlds or he had time off because he's just not really
- 38:03himself. Like he had to go to the arms
- 38:04pretty early and just knew like I think Brian Faye was pacing
- 38:08Brett Robinson, so he might have brought him through like 2 1/2
- 38:12to 3K or something like that. And Brett looked so good and
- 38:15like what, like 100 to go, K to go.
- 38:17You could just see like Brett was was cruising and like set
- 38:20was in trouble unfairly to set. Like he hung on both.
- 38:23I'm so happy for Brett. Like even coming from the
- 38:28marathon, like to be able to run like 1328, like it actually is
- 38:32phenomenal and like it was doing the world of God.
- 38:35I'd love to see like what Martin he'll pick and after like the
- 38:39speed block because I wouldn't put it past him like running
- 38:41super, super fast over the half and the full.
- 38:45Yeah, you'd love to see it get some confidence back.
- 38:49And yeah, what was it like 600 to go or something?
- 38:53And you could see him like starting to look around Brett
- 38:56like. And he knew that it was on at
- 38:59that point, didn't he was like, right, Seth, I'm coming to get
- 39:01you now. You better still have something
- 39:03left because I'm feeling, I'm feeling pretty good there.
- 39:07And he like kind of wound them in.
- 39:08Do you have maybe 20 meters if not a little bit more at one
- 39:11point? Yeah, he's very brave.
- 39:16Like he sort of had to go by him as well.
- 39:18Like I wouldn't have sat on set and he had to go by him and like
- 39:22sort of squeeze set. So I thought you run it really,
- 39:24really well. Yeah, and you're right, Seth did
- 39:27cling underneath. He attached to Brett ever so
- 39:30slightly as he went past and then Brett goes to the arms in
- 39:34in the final straight and he's he's done a few shoulder checks
- 39:37already by that point. So I was like, yes, is he is he
- 39:40running out of fuel here himself?
- 39:42And he proper dug in, didn't need the facials and everything
- 39:45class. That's a savage mate.
- 39:47I ran that 2-3 years ago in in box, so I'm just the atmosphere.
- 39:53I think Stewie Mcswain was running the 1K, went for the
- 39:55World for the record in the 1K when I was there that time.
- 39:59But even this year, like having your man is it Mitch Dyer on the
- 40:03mic? He's so good on the micran and
- 40:05atmosphere and even had this guy on like a freaking like
- 40:10electronics J board going around getting Sportage.
- 40:12He was just such a well organized event.
- 40:16Yeah, he's sick, that guy, isn't he?
- 40:18Magic Moments I think is Instagram, like some of the
- 40:22content that you can put together.
- 40:25He almost acts as like a unofficial pacemaker though with
- 40:29the way he rides alongside them. If he just rides, you'd be like
- 40:32you just ride that consistent pace and we'll just get another
- 40:3668 second lap here, that'll be alright.
- 40:39I think Liam Stocky ran it as well and he got your man.
- 40:42Took a nice video of Liam Stocky running skill.
- 40:47Yeah, it's our boy. Moorcroft was in the 1000
- 40:51meters. He finished second to a Maltese
- 40:54guy. I don't know if I presume this
- 40:56guy just lives in Australia, and he's obviously still
- 40:59representing Malta, but Tom ran 224, which is obscenely fast
- 41:05really, isn't it? I think they refer themselves as
- 41:08Maltesers. Is this that the politically
- 41:13correct? Actually, I'm pretty sure it is.
- 41:19I reckon they just say they're Maltese.
- 41:23Oh, maybe you're right. Well, Maltese, Yeah, sorry,
- 41:27they're not Maltese. I'll have to check the
- 41:34demographics, see if we've got any Maltese on board, but we
- 41:37won't do it next week. I'm sorry guys.
- 41:41We've I've got a few more Tasers on board.
- 41:43We had them on Saturday. But no, Tommy Warcraft ran a
- 41:48good race, didn't he? 224 Like that's moving.
- 41:51And I want to say like, fair enough. 335 pace, something like
- 41:56that. Yeah, yeah, He's fit.
- 42:01He's. He's around 1:49 I think.
- 42:03Last year didn't he over 800? Like I didn't realize that until
- 42:07I think the other week and Raph mentioned it in conversation.
- 42:09I was like, shit, that's like he's getting close there isn't
- 42:13he? I know like 4 seconds is huge
- 42:17but it's also not like if you just make that one big jump run
- 42:23230 second PB. Jump over to Jr., you reckon?
- 42:26Yeah, yeah, exactly. He needs a bit of Josh Howie
- 42:30juice. Bit of Gnomeo fly carb form
- 42:36we've. Got the We've got the package.
- 42:38Solve the problem. And then more recently, moving
- 42:43on from voxel burn over to Spain, there was the Castillo
- 42:4710K, which surprise surprise is part of the greater region of
- 42:51Valencia because I was like another 10K.
- 42:55I'm just going to have a look whereabouts this is and the
- 42:57Wikipedia says like a province in the northern part of
- 43:01Valencian community. It's a cheat code over there,
- 43:06isn't it? And I think this one is like,
- 43:08you can run faster, the buildings are higher, so you're
- 43:11more shaded. Like valence is pretty open,
- 43:14whereas this one, you're literally run down streets.
- 43:15It's very, very like shaded and sheltered.
- 43:20However, saying that, it's not organized as well as Valencia.
- 43:27Did you see the video of the start line?
- 43:30Yeah, it was terrible. So basically in Valencia, the
- 43:33elites are right in front and then the gun goes off they go
- 43:37and they slowly bring up the waves.
- 43:39So then there was my wave, wave 130 seconds later.
- 43:43They let us off 30 seconds later.
- 43:45So they let everyone off. They push everyone up every 30
- 43:47seconds. Whereas this one gun goes, it's
- 43:50a free for all. And I think a girl in a like a
- 43:53Nike pro kit, she fell. So then people are just like
- 43:57jumping over her, running everywhere around her.
- 43:59And then there's a massive big pile up.
- 44:02I'll send you we should share the video to the to the end
- 44:05story because actually it's crazy and like you're helpless
- 44:08because people like runners once they start the watch, it's just
- 44:13every man for himself. I don't care if someone's in
- 44:15front of me. They're just jumping over them.
- 44:17And it looks it's so, so, so dangerous.
- 44:19Like the women shouldn't have to deal with that.
- 44:22And because men are going to be stronger, they're going to be
- 44:24pushing. And we all know from the start
- 44:26line, like you get elbows everywhere.
- 44:28And so, yeah, it's not really fair.
- 44:32And it looked so dangerous. It's a bit of a tough watch,
- 44:36isn't it, Because she turns, obviously she should panic, but
- 44:39she turns back and is like facing then the masses like
- 44:43coming towards her. But it was quite lucky because
- 44:46then it seemed like there was a another like bit of a holder
- 44:50just behind there which kind of stopped everyone just Stampede
- 44:54and over it. And I think.
- 44:56But like, then there's like bibs on the ground.
- 44:58So if some people are calling back to try and get their bib,
- 45:01because obviously the chip is in the bib and if you don't have
- 45:04your bib when you're crossing the line, you'll see there's no
- 45:06thing to like stop your time if you get me.
- 45:09So then there's a young lad running back to try and pick up.
- 45:11There's like loads of bibs on the ground.
- 45:12He's picking up trying to find his bib and then he gets going
- 45:14again. Yeah, bit of a disaster from the
- 45:19South. The results read well though, so
- 45:22I mean we'll get into this in a in a minute.
- 45:24European record in both the men and the women is.
- 45:28What's? In the media.
- 45:31So Megan Keith no, she didn't win the women women's race shot.
- 45:37She finished fourth. She ran thirty O 7 for, I
- 45:41genuinely don't know everywhere's saying European
- 45:43record. And then I look on World
- 45:46Athletics and the woman who's listed first has ran a thirty O
- 45:525 and she's Israeli, which made me think, well, is Israel
- 46:01considered part of Europe or not?
- 46:03But then when you look into this, so she's called loner
- 46:06Solpita, you look into her background.
- 46:09She's raced for Israel for a while.
- 46:12She's Kenyan originally but like she's raced for Israel for over
- 46:1610 years, represented them multiple major championships but
- 46:21them Israel have also been a part of European athletics for
- 46:2620 odd years. So I don't know if this result
- 46:31has been wiped and like well athletics just doesn't reflect
- 46:34it. But Megan Keith's run from 24
- 46:38hours ago appears there. So I don't understand why this
- 46:43salt pieces run if she wasn't the record holder and why it
- 46:47would be there. It's really quite confusing.
- 46:51Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me.
- 46:53I do remember in terms of following that Lorna Salpetto
- 46:56her like she's been, she was up in like the leading like the
- 47:00Doha world champ, you know, 2019 world champs at Julian raced in
- 47:06that's spoken about and other major championships.
- 47:10Like, she's quite aggressive and I remember her might have been
- 47:14Matt Fox with Sweat Elite, might have done her video showcasing
- 47:18her training as well. I remember or learning about her
- 47:20training, but she's been around for quite some time.
- 47:24But as to why it's not, Yeah, who's contesting?
- 47:29What is the record? I don't know.
- 47:33All very fast times. That's what we do know.
- 47:37Yeah, all very fast. So she finished fourth behind
- 47:41the woman who won. It was 2934 sub 30 minutes.
- 47:44Caroline Gatonga had a little look into her.
- 47:51There's 30. So in reference to Megan Keith
- 47:55running potentially a European record, if it's not European
- 47:58record, certainly a great British record, she'd be Irish.
- 48:01Mcculligan's record by a second, 34 African women have ran under
- 48:0930 minutes and then Keith potentially has the European
- 48:14record and that's just wild, isn't it?
- 48:17Like how can there be 34 African women ahead of the European
- 48:22record holder? They just have like such a grip
- 48:25on that 10K distance. They've broken 29 as well.
- 48:30Haven't. They I think the records 28
- 48:33something that only ones the cross country the whole time is
- 48:36run 28 something. Yeah, 28.
- 48:41That's. Normal, yeah.
- 48:45But fair play to Megan Keith, right?
- 48:47That was it to run that time. She's also taken one minute and
- 48:5115 seconds off her own PB like that is at that level.
- 48:54There's a massive jump, isn't it?
- 48:56How much did you run a PB by in? Me the other day, 21 seconds. 21
- 49:03yeah, and or in Valencia, isn't it?
- 49:05Yeah. In Valencia, I ran a minute.
- 49:08Yeah, nearly a minute. But arguing like Megan Keep the
- 49:13jump, Megan Keep made us harder because she's fast.
- 49:15Like she's just like, it's just faster.
- 49:20Like even the stream, the stream again was a joke.
- 49:23They were concentrating on McCall again.
- 49:25And like McCall again was like, well, back.
- 49:29And then they're like, oh, they're waiting for Megan Keep
- 49:31to come in. Little did they know, like Megan
- 49:33Key had already come in. I had a McCall again, like
- 49:36disrespect. She's preparing for London
- 49:41Mccolgan, isn't she? Yeah, she'd have her life.
- 49:46So I mean, to be fair, to be running a 3030 ten KA month or
- 49:52no more than a month in the London block anyway, I think
- 49:56that bodes well because she made a debut.
- 49:58Was it just last year in the marathon?
- 50:00It was not disappointing, but it it she was trying to break 220,
- 50:04wasn't she? I think that was the goal break
- 50:05220 on debut and she obviously didn't do it but she's that run
- 50:10suggests she's she's got decent legs and decent pace underneath
- 50:14her this time round. Well, I don't care.
- 50:17She's up in front remote. Like why the hell would you go
- 50:19near that place? If there's like freaking 10 feet
- 50:22of snow up there, you're just going to be bound to a woodway
- 50:24treadmill. It's just it's no fun.
- 50:27Like what's the point? The fair enough.
- 50:28It's not really high altitude, but like your son, at ease Were
- 50:31more than a little bit of altitude gains run again.
- 50:35You see a story out the hotel window.
- 50:38She was like running around a car park like 100 times, like
- 50:41it's crazy stuff. Just on that, have you has
- 50:47anyone popped up on your algorithm?
- 50:49This guy that like runs on his fridge that does like these and
- 50:56he's done it like in like a like a like a day, like sauna day bed
- 51:02and like it hasn't come off on your feet.
- 51:07Yeah, I need to get the OMTI used to shut them down I think.
- 51:12It gets me every time though. It isn't he's isn't physically
- 51:18moving so don't understand how he manages to produce like a GPS
- 51:22to think he's gone 40 kilometers.
- 51:24He's done one like in his washing machine.
- 51:28He's just rolling circles inside his washing washing machine.
- 51:32Is it like 5 KS he does? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:36Funny. Yeah, my mate who's not into
- 51:40running like in the slightest sends me the video every time it
- 51:44pops up and I'm like, oh, will you go away?
- 51:49In the men's race, the guy who won her birth, Kabeth 2639,
- 51:56absolutely blisteringly fast, sixth fastest time ever, Ugandan
- 52:00bloke who trains with chapter guy and chapter guys group.
- 52:04I think it was his debut. How can you run sub 27 on debut
- 52:10out of nowhere? It's it's wild.
- 52:15I can tell you how you can run so 27 on debut.
- 52:17Ryan, if you want to know, enlighten me.
- 52:22Nah, I will give him benefit of the doubt, but yeah, it's just
- 52:28crazy fast, isn't it? For your, I think this is his
- 52:32debut chopstick, born in 2005 and just slapping up freaking
- 52:37Andres Armgren and your man Schrob.
- 52:40Yeah, figure out what you will. But like, for the sake of
- 52:44athletics, I really hope it's clean.
- 52:48When he got going, like he didn't off start moving as well,
- 52:51didn't he? It was kind of like Almgren and
- 52:53Shrub went to the front and we're looking to like start
- 52:56pushing it on. And then this guy said I was is
- 53:00it time to go? Is it?
- 53:01And he just like, dropped them. Yeah, and he the thing that
- 53:06really annoys me is when they crossed the line, he's not
- 53:08tired. Like surely after running that
- 53:13you're a little bit out of breath.
- 53:15Like the chop, you're just chilling.
- 53:17In fairness, Almgren never looks it like he's.
- 53:21It's like you that physically fit that it can exhaust you in
- 53:25the exact moments, but then as soon as you stop you're like OK
- 53:29I'm fine. Yes, turn on.
- 53:35So Jan Schrub, the French guy, ended up finishing ahead of
- 53:39Andres Almgren. They were second and third and
- 53:41Shrub takes the European record away from Almgren, who was
- 53:44trying to lower his own record and ends up walking away as the
- 53:47non record holder. And he said he missed one of his
- 53:53big specific workouts, I think in the week prior.
- 53:57And he said I just didn't have the power in my legs.
- 54:00I had enough power to run 2645. I wouldn't mind.
- 54:03I wouldn't mind that myself. I work, I'm like the opposite,
- 54:08like I'm sort of freshen up when I don't try and he like becomes
- 54:11stale, different levels. And you know the guy who was
- 54:16patient because I've seen him getting interviewed in the week
- 54:20leading up to asking him about like, are you up to the task
- 54:22type thing? Because he was tasked with 1320
- 54:25through 5K. Yeah, Mike Fopp and the Dutch
- 54:28guy, he's like always makes Diamond League fields,
- 54:33potentially world champ semis and if not finals.
- 54:37So this guy's a legit athlete and they're they're asking him
- 54:41whether he can take the 10K runners through 5K, whether he's
- 54:44up to the task. And you see him that third and
- 54:484th and 5th K, he's like fully driving his arms, isn't he?
- 54:52He's having to work for it. But fair play to him.
- 54:54He literally nailed the pacing job.
- 54:56Didn't he think straight through like 13/21/22 maybe?
- 55:01Like no other athlete can do that.
- 55:03You'd have to have a pro athlete to pace like that race.
- 55:06It's the time to put back-to-back.
- 55:09Like the fight case that's they put back-to-back is like not.
- 55:13Yeah, when we're just talking about Brett having a great race
- 55:16as like former Australian record holder in the marathon running
- 55:201329 and then these guys are splitting half the race quicker
- 55:25than that. So last of the results, back
- 55:29over to Asia. There's a big marathon going
- 55:32down. Yeah, the second marathon one
- 55:37that I've run a couple of times. I don't know if we're recording
- 55:43this when, when this was around, when this was run last year, but
- 55:47like there used to be a like a men's only Invitational race.
- 55:51So like B1 marathon, I'm not sure if you've heard it spoken
- 55:54about, but it was like a small men's only.
- 55:58You needed 2 1/2 hours or quicker to qualify that race.
- 56:03I ran in 2020, but then during COVID it ceased happening.
- 56:07And so they merged that event. They sort of rebirthed it one
- 56:12year during COVID just for Japanese athletes and then they
- 56:15put it, they bolted it onto the Asaka Marathon.
- 56:18So as a result, the Asaka Marathon has quite a good elite
- 56:24and sub elite program. So it tends to get quite deep
- 56:26fields. So and this race was no
- 56:29different. So for context, 100th place in
- 56:34the Osaka Marathon this year was in 2/18/31.
- 56:40And so for context like probably the deepest marathon in the
- 56:43world I would suggest is in terms of the fastest and deepest
- 56:48marathon would be Valencia. So Valencia last year was
- 56:502/17/11 for 100. So sort of gives you some some
- 56:55idea of the depth of the race, albeit that what tends to happen
- 56:59in this race is that the first half is run much quicker than
- 57:03the second-half. The Japanese tend to go out
- 57:05pretty fast, but the winners this year was Ibrahim Hassan
- 57:11from Djibouti in a in a national record of 2/05/20 and of no of
- 57:18what? That was the winning time.
- 57:20And Marie de Barbour from Ethiopia was the winner also in
- 57:24a champion in a course record of 22144.
- 57:28So fast times for the Osaka Marathon.
- 57:30I think it's largely flat with a few U turns and some small
- 57:34pinches, but nothing substantial.
- 57:37So yeah, both, both those times particularly fast, some other
- 57:41notable. Do the Kenyans normally?
- 57:44Do the East Africans normally help this one?
- 57:48Yeah, so the same agents that I've seen present say like
- 57:52Sydney and other marathons will have a field you normally have
- 57:57like the top 10 bibs, men and women.
- 58:01There's like a, they call them like invited athletes and
- 58:04there's normally say 10 or so E Africans, 10 or so Japanese
- 58:08runners. So in that league group, you
- 58:11often get at least a handful of of top Kenyans running Kenyans
- 58:16running it. I think when I did it in 2023, a
- 58:19young Japanese guy, like a Japanese uni student won it.
- 58:23It was quite wet that year and it was a bit of an upset, which
- 58:27was pretty cool. But yeah, it's normally one in
- 58:31around 205206 I think like in the lead pack, like when I did
- 58:37it, the top 100 or went through 10K in like 30 flat.
- 58:42So there's just this super PAC that's running, you know, at
- 58:44that 206 pace. Yeah, I was just going to say
- 58:48look at the women's results. Seven of the top 8 finishers are
- 58:53all different national. Well, there's seven different
- 58:55nationalities in the top 8. Let's go.
- 58:58Yeah, that, that is cool. And I think it might pay down to
- 59:02top 8. So Tara Palm who's from SA, she
- 59:06was 8th IN23158 and I remember Tara went over has been, has
- 59:12raced that race before so must have fond memories of that and
- 59:17it's run very well again. That's a couple of Japan trips
- 59:21in the space of six months for her on the back of Tokyo.
- 59:27Well, yeah. And on the men's side, 14th
- 59:33place a little bit further down, was a guy by the name of Ethan
- 59:38Shewley, who I must admit I hadn't heard of.
- 59:42I know Ryan, you, you, you'd spotted him in one of Jake's
- 59:47YouTube videos. But he he's a film student,
- 59:53former BYU alumni who apparently took a bit of a break from
- 1:00:00running. Went to Japan for film study and
- 1:00:02has reignited his running career.
- 1:00:05And yeah, ran 2/07/14 which is number six all time for America.
- 1:00:11An American guy. He was on American record pace
- 1:00:15for a while. Was he?
- 1:00:18Like like this was surprising. But then his half is 6102, which
- 1:00:25he sat in January. So surely when you look at that
- 1:00:27like, it's not that surprising days after running a, does that
- 1:00:31equate like? Close.
- 1:00:33Yeah. I mean like double, you know,
- 1:00:35like double +7, so 209, yeah. But I think he might have done
- 1:00:40that maybe in a bit of a marathon block, I suppose.
- 1:00:43I mean, you, I checked on Strava, He was doing some pretty
- 1:00:47outrageous mileage in the lead up.
- 1:00:50And I actually watched and maybe we're segueing early with into
- 1:00:54YouTube Diaries, but he has a YouTube channel and I watched,
- 1:00:59he ran the I think the Kobe marathon in November or so of
- 1:01:03last year. That's pretty cool.
- 1:01:05It's a pretty good video. Like because he goes into the
- 1:01:10experience of prior to then his best time was 218.
- 1:01:14And so he couldn't get into the elite field at Kobe.
- 1:01:17And so he's a bit like you Owen, in some of these Japanese races
- 1:01:20where he had to start in like corral S or something like that.
- 1:01:24And basically he, he dropped like a 250 first kilometre of
- 1:01:28the marathon to join the, the lead pack, like the the main
- 1:01:34elite pack. And, and I, and I don't know if
- 1:01:39he paid for that, but he ended up finishing second.
- 1:01:40Like it like there's like a handful of East Africans leading
- 1:01:44that race and along with some very strong Japanese.
- 1:01:46And he ended up finishing second, like 10 seconds off the
- 1:01:48win in 210, I think, or two, No 211, two 11211.
- 1:01:53Yeah. So and he sort of suggested in
- 1:01:56that that he had more whether or not, but 4 minutes more is a
- 1:01:59lot. So yeah, he look, I mean, he
- 1:02:02looks really smooth at that three minute K pace, doesn't he?
- 1:02:07Yeah. But like some people, I think I
- 1:02:09was who was a listener podcast, I think was one of the FTK ones,
- 1:02:16I was like, dude, Thomas done a test to find out like which pace
- 1:02:20he was most efficient at. And like at like at 3:30, he's
- 1:02:24just too good. Hold out for days.
- 1:02:25He's just so efficient at that. So you might even Chewy, that
- 1:02:28must be his, just where his spot where he's so smooth.
- 1:02:33Even so with that 61 half, like obviously he's incredibly fast,
- 1:02:38but how bold do you have to be to still then go and put it on
- 1:02:43the line and go out at like 205 pace?
- 1:02:46Because he could have locked in like no risks, a sub 210 run and
- 1:02:51just played the safe game and he's potentially blown his own
- 1:02:54race up to chase. More like fair play.
- 1:02:58I don't know. I think it's smart because
- 1:02:59there's probably no group going to 10.
- 1:03:01They're all them. Japanese are crazy.
- 1:03:02They just go 205. So it's pretty easier to just go
- 1:03:05with them. That, yeah, that, yeah, I think
- 1:03:07if you're running in one of those European races where
- 1:03:10they're like got multiple pace groups.
- 1:03:13But that race in particular, like you, I just remember seeing
- 1:03:16it because I remember going over there with a Kiwi guy and he's
- 1:03:19like, I don't know who I'm going to run with because like, you're
- 1:03:21either going at the pace or you're not.
- 1:03:24And they have two pace groups set up for outrageously fast
- 1:03:27paces at the front. And then it's daylight.
- 1:03:31I think that what I from what I remember of him in Jake's video
- 1:03:34was Jake was like kind of begging him up saying this like
- 1:03:38watch out for this guy type thing.
- 1:03:40I can't remember what video it was.
- 1:03:42It's definitely in the past month or so.
- 1:03:44And I'm sure they were just like stood trackside.
- 1:03:46They just done a workout together.
- 1:03:50He done that fast 10K that Jake done around there that Japanese
- 1:03:54also called here. It's the Tokyo legacy 10 or
- 1:03:58something about done some time K probably in that video.
- 1:04:00But surely if you're Jake like what the hell are you not
- 1:04:02training with him? I feel like both speak English
- 1:04:05like they're both similar ability and like why not?
- 1:04:10And log in some serious case. This guy was up to like 260 KA
- 1:04:13week. So what Jake is doing?
- 1:04:16Yeah, yeah. I know not as consistently, but
- 1:04:19still, yeah, still very cool. So worth a follow both on
- 1:04:24YouTube and on Strava. I would say.
- 1:04:26Post all these activities on there.
- 1:04:29Again, going back to Jonathan Gauls, like Japan Running News
- 1:04:33cover these Japanese races really, really well on X as in
- 1:04:37like whilst the race is going on, they'll post what's
- 1:04:40happening at the front of the race, like who's on what pace
- 1:04:43kind of thing, who's leading, what's happening at halfway.
- 1:04:47And the account tweeted Japan, Japan run news tweeted USA is
- 1:04:53Ethan Julie is through. I can't remember if it's halfway
- 1:04:5710K whatever it was in 204 national record pace.
- 1:05:03And Jonathan Gol like quote tweeted it saying USA is who is
- 1:05:08on pace for what. So I think this guy is going to
- 1:05:14be the talk of the week. You know, the way like there
- 1:05:16seems to be one story which kind of blows up and everyone's
- 1:05:19speaking about it. He he's that guy this week.
- 1:05:22Like what has Fate and Young run?
- 1:05:27Yeah. He's literally number six on
- 1:05:29record eligible courses. He's number six.
- 1:05:32And the guys ahead of him are like Conor Manz.
- 1:05:37Is it Kanuchi, the guy that held the world record?
- 1:05:41Line Hall. Ryan Hall, Yeah, like, into
- 1:05:45other, into other very top runners.
- 1:05:48What? Speaking of like people making
- 1:05:51bold moves and running the race in a crazy style did, did you
- 1:05:55actually see or hear about what happened at the front of the
- 1:05:58race during like earlier on? The guy never ended up
- 1:06:01finishing. Oh shit, I don't know how far
- 1:06:04back he finished, think it was like 29210, but there was this
- 1:06:08super group as it is through 10K halfway.
- 1:06:11And then this Japanese guy just pulls off the front of it and
- 1:06:15he's only running 20 or 30 meters ahead of like a 50 man
- 1:06:20pack and he just starts accelerating away.
- 1:06:23And he was on like 2O3 pace or something through halfway.
- 1:06:26And apparently to be fair to him on that, like New Year's Akadan,
- 1:06:31which obviously would have just been 8 weeks or so ago, he'd run
- 1:06:35a time because they run random distances then they might be
- 1:06:38like 23K or 25K which equated to A2O3 high marathon.
- 1:06:45And he's obviously just like gone all in and had so much self
- 1:06:48belief. Unfortunately didn't pull it off
- 1:06:51this time, but he's got the balls.
- 1:06:53So I'll have to find the guy's name.
- 1:06:57Shit that's annoying. He had it looked like it had,
- 1:07:01you know, that treatment when people get is it like coping
- 1:07:04therapy where you can have like all the red marks all over your
- 1:07:07skin, but they were like they were darker.
- 1:07:10So I don't know what what had been going on.
- 1:07:12It wasn't like the little magnet thing is either.
- 1:07:14Was it at smaller ones? Yeah, maybe.
- 1:07:19They're definitely a thing in terms of these little dots with
- 1:07:24magnets on them. Guys, I think we all buy a
- 1:07:30house. Dean I need you to fund this
- 1:07:32because you're the man with the money here we move to listen
- 1:07:35hear me out hear me out. We moved to Utah OK, because
- 1:07:39this Ethan Julie he was born in Utah.
- 1:07:42He's born in altitude. She knew moved there.
- 1:07:45I get a little house go in future house and all the kids
- 1:07:49they just become more we cannot become Mormons.
- 1:07:52Can you become a Mormon or just to be born a Mormon anyway, just
- 1:07:56the quality of our like we could hang out with like Clayton young
- 1:07:59Connor man's and I think Grant Fisher's out there as well.
- 1:08:04It can be so fun. Let's think.
- 1:08:09Sounds good. Yeah, well, I mean, you know
- 1:08:12who's been put peddling that one a little bit is, is Mr. Raph
- 1:08:16Ball. He's been, Oh yeah, he's brought
- 1:08:18up for it. Yeah.
- 1:08:19He wants to go. That's kind.
- 1:08:21I think he's keen on the acts of service, but he's definitely
- 1:08:24keen on getting around the BYU. But there's the venture
- 1:08:29capitalists you were looking for.
- 1:08:31Yeah. He'll create He's the
- 1:08:35crowdfunding. Training camps and we we could
- 1:08:41finally have a podcast studio. Oh my God, probably fun.
- 1:08:46Fuck this Riverside shit. Even though you probably need to
- 1:08:49stop juice on your Riverside. Riverside may have been, you
- 1:08:54know, looking to offer us a free subscription maybe if we kept
- 1:08:57growing and that's that one gone as well.
- 1:09:00Oh shit, add it to the list. It's longer than our list of
- 1:09:05results. Well, we've survived results,
- 1:09:07right? That was the last.
- 1:09:08Yeah, right. Let's box these listener
- 1:09:11questions off from last week. All right.
- 1:09:15I'll, I'll take the lead on these, shall I?
- 1:09:20So in no particular order, these are the listener questions that
- 1:09:23we carried over that we needed Owen's input on just because
- 1:09:26they knew Ryan was worried. I just sit on the fence with all
- 1:09:28of them. But to start off, we've got can
- 1:09:33we have a What would Ryan do segment.
- 1:09:37I like it. So this is the guy who messaged
- 1:09:42Owen Joe Bowden and said explained about this Rodman
- 1:09:46story. So he wants a what would Ryan
- 1:09:50slash Rodman do? Have you seen shit?
- 1:09:52What's the documentary on Netflix about Michael Jordan,
- 1:09:56you know, the basketball, the Chicago Bulls and Dennis Rodman.
- 1:10:01So that they were referring to me as Dennis Rodman for a period
- 1:10:05because of tendencies to, like, be All in all house.
- 1:10:08Yeah. And he, yeah.
- 1:10:11What would, what would Rodman do?
- 1:10:13So I guess it depends which personality type turns up that
- 1:10:16week, whether it's Ryan or Rodman.
- 1:10:19This is good. I like it all right.
- 1:10:23So Rodman would not attend the gym, whereas Ryan might attend
- 1:10:26the gym. I look, I'd written you off
- 1:10:28today. I thought it was going to be a
- 1:10:29Rodman Rodman Monday. Turns out I was greeted greeted
- 1:10:36by by you, Ron. Yeah, we'll see.
- 1:10:41This is the problem is when when Rodman is taking over the brain,
- 1:10:46you can't identify it until he's gone.
- 1:10:49Well, it all sounded very Ryan. We maybe can park the rest of
- 1:10:54Rodman and Ryan, but it sounds like your training week was
- 1:10:56quite Ryan this week. Yeah, it did.
- 1:10:59To be fair, we'll put Rodman to the back of the mind during the
- 1:11:05recovery journey. Until for for another 3 or 4
- 1:11:11weeks until you're tapering for bridges.
- 1:11:13Until the wheels come off, yeah. And now second listener question
- 1:11:19is from Susie. It's what was our favorite guest
- 1:11:22interview. I'll go for I'd say I loved the
- 1:11:28the elevens wands tier of all them because you look up to
- 1:11:32every single runner. I think the one coming out soon,
- 1:11:34I really enjoyed the one we'd done yesterday because I just
- 1:11:37love him out. And oddly and as a person, his
- 1:11:39views, I think he's very black and white and but I think all of
- 1:11:42them, David, you could take something from them.
- 1:11:44And again, like, yeah, I look up to every single person in the
- 1:11:48interview. So say all of them.
- 1:11:50I'm sitting on the DN. I'm at 7 on the fence.
- 1:11:53I reckon Levens as well, just because maybe there was just
- 1:11:58something special about it. And I think it was maybe the
- 1:12:02third one. We spoke to RAF and Jake before
- 1:12:06Cam, but obviously we have some at least some sort of
- 1:12:10relationship with both of them. Whereas Cam was like kind of out
- 1:12:14the blue and we're all running around like pinch ourselves
- 1:12:16moment. What's going on here?
- 1:12:18And then the quality of the conversation and like the in
- 1:12:22depth insights that he shared was just crazy to hear it from
- 1:12:26like one of the best ever. Yes, look, I'm going to probably
- 1:12:32sit on the fence because I think there's elements from all of
- 1:12:35them. Like like the, I think that's
- 1:12:38probably what I get a lot out of these interviews is you're going
- 1:12:41to listen for an hour and a half, but there's probably 3 or
- 1:12:43so things that you take from them that you sort of take with
- 1:12:46you on your running journey. So like when Cooper T was
- 1:12:50talking about cross training, which was particularly relevant
- 1:12:52for Ryan and I at the time, and just talking about how he can
- 1:12:55get to that top end of zone too, not running all the time.
- 1:12:58I really liked that. And then when and then when
- 1:13:02Owen's chatting with your man with Andrew and they're having
- 1:13:08does that good mate ship and then talking about tapering into
- 1:13:11races and the challenge for championship races and the
- 1:13:14tendency to just want to push, push, push, but just come in
- 1:13:17just right for those races. Like there's things that we took
- 1:13:21out of all of it. And then same with the even the
- 1:13:23recent chat on that fly carb. Like I went into that
- 1:13:25conversation open minded, but I certainly didn't think that I
- 1:13:29would walk away from it thinking that's probably something called
- 1:13:32take with me 9 races out of 10 going forward.
- 1:13:38I think one of the things which is clear from all of the
- 1:13:40interviews, like the recurring theme is just the, I mean, it
- 1:13:44sounds obvious, but the professionalism, like the
- 1:13:47mindset is just a little bit different, isn't it?
- 1:13:50Like we like to think we take running seriously and we take it
- 1:13:53as seriously as we can. But yeah, professional athletes
- 1:13:58are just, they're wired a little bit differently, aren't they?
- 1:14:02Yeah, for sure. Question from Adam Nathan, did
- 1:14:08you see the podcast lasting this long?
- 1:14:11Do we think we'd be here a year later?
- 1:14:15I want to say yes, but like not many like long distance podcasts
- 1:14:21last because there's so much planning and like there's like
- 1:14:25to be honest, there's a lot of sacrifice that goes into it.
- 1:14:27Like when we're recording on a Sunday, like that would be
- 1:14:30midday for me. Like that's the Sunday like row
- 1:14:33off if you get me. But like, it's crazy how we've
- 1:14:37been able to like find a balance and make it work constantly.
- 1:14:39So this long, probably not, but I'm so happy it has last this
- 1:14:44long. Like I think we said that I
- 1:14:47think after 12 episodes and they normally fail.
- 1:14:51Yeah, if you don't make it to 12, they normally fail.
- 1:14:53So. We're 50 here now, so I think
- 1:14:55we're. We're well on the way to 100.
- 1:14:58Yeah, my answer is no, but purely from a point of.
- 1:15:02View I genuinely never thought about it.
- 1:15:04Like honestly, I never thought like, are we going to last?
- 1:15:08Are we not going to last? It was just like, OK, well it's
- 1:15:11Monday, it's Sunday or it's Monday.
- 1:15:12So we're recording an episode and then all of a sudden a
- 1:15:15year's flown by. And clearly it has because we're
- 1:15:18still here, Which I guess is a good thing because it just means
- 1:15:21you're kind of living in each week in the moment and enjoying
- 1:15:24it, obviously. So definitely some.
- 1:15:30Rodman type elements to keep. The the stoke in the fire when
- 1:15:34it needed the motivational drive from time to time by Ryan's,
- 1:15:38kept it, kept it going. I think I mean Rodman.
- 1:15:44Was very much around when I was in.
- 1:15:46Europe last year and was doing this is a hero cardiovascular
- 1:15:50activity. I would hate to listen back to
- 1:15:54those episodes because they're. Probably a shambles.
- 1:15:58Or even I remember the ones when I was traveling like.
- 1:16:00Fine or QLD? Like Cairns and all that.
- 1:16:03And I'd like, I'd have to hop on like give a little like proof
- 1:16:06gift to what I'm doing. I was injured at the time as
- 1:16:08well. And yeah, it's crazy.
- 1:16:10Like what we've actually been true.
- 1:16:11And like how we're still going dialing in from the from the
- 1:16:16airport lounge. And the announcer goes.
- 1:16:18In the background and then finally from Alice Kerr.
- 1:16:22Anything you've. Changed about training or racing
- 1:16:25knowing that you'd be talking about it on the pod?
- 1:16:30Have I changed anything? About training.
- 1:16:32Or racing, like racing, I feel like training you can hide stuff
- 1:16:37racing like the result is out there for everyone to see.
- 1:16:39Like you can't really hide racing like I love racing like
- 1:16:43that's why we sort of do the sport.
- 1:16:45So racing, no training obviously on your Strava you might hide
- 1:16:50the odd lactate reading if it's like super, super high.
- 1:16:54But I'd like to think I'm very black and white with my training
- 1:16:58and like what I do. And if I don't post it on
- 1:17:00Strava, you're going to hear about it on this.
- 1:17:02So where another you'd hear about what I'm doing, I guess my
- 1:17:07answers in NA given. Hardly fucking race since we've
- 1:17:10had the podcast. But no, to be honest, I'm I'm
- 1:17:16not the only thing. I would be worried about in
- 1:17:20training is doing stupid things and then I know that you guys
- 1:17:24are going to call me out on it. So it's not to be like
- 1:17:27embarrassed about anything or trying to like fluff up a result
- 1:17:30more so like I just know yous aren't going to let me get away
- 1:17:33with anything. So after just front up to it,
- 1:17:39yeah, probably similar. I mean.
- 1:17:43I don't think so. Like in terms of my training
- 1:17:47approach to training, it's been pretty similar for a chunk of
- 1:17:49time, albeit right now I'm not able to fully train, but I'm
- 1:17:53optimistic that when I can that it would be pretty similar
- 1:17:58training to what I was doing that had been effective for a
- 1:18:01chunk of time. So yeah, like to think.
- 1:18:06Not too much. And then I think, like you say,
- 1:18:08this is just meant to be a bit of a.
- 1:18:10Sounding board, keeping us honest to stop us from doing
- 1:18:12things that we don't think of sensible choices so if anything
- 1:18:16it's probably just a good reminder to.
- 1:18:19Make smart. Choices because you're going to
- 1:18:20be held accountable for them when we talk about them on a
- 1:18:22Monday. Yeah, good summary running.
- 1:18:27News very quickly. Al Fly.
- 1:18:29Floor was spotted on foot. I think it was Geoffrey Cam War
- 1:18:32War. The other week he won some half
- 1:18:34marathon, can't remember where it was in like 58 minutes.
- 1:18:37And there's a bit of a news story around him because like it
- 1:18:41had been 13 years since he'd run that quick.
- 1:18:44Something bizarre like that. And he was in like the Al Fly
- 1:18:47floor prototype. I think some of the rumours
- 1:18:49online are that it might be being released around Chicago
- 1:18:53time, which should be what, September, October?
- 1:18:57So a. Little while to wait.
- 1:18:59Yet Rodman been on those let's let's run threads, says he.
- 1:19:06No. I've got that birthday voucher
- 1:19:08for Nike, so I've been. Trying to think about whether
- 1:19:11whether I should invest it or sit on it.
- 1:19:14I'd wait for the four, yeah. Fem Cabal ended her indoor.
- 1:19:20Season very prematurely with an injury, which is sad given the
- 1:19:25amount hyphen talk there was around her coming.
- 1:19:27To the 800. And whether she could live up to
- 1:19:30her like world record world champion status in the 400 and
- 1:19:35400 hurdles in the ace 100, but we'll have to wait and see.
- 1:19:40Yeah, Philly Baden, she also. She signed a little Lennon.
- 1:19:44A three-year deal. So I think she was on some like
- 1:19:47creator slash athlete contractor on and that ended as of December
- 1:19:53or January 2026. And so yeah, she's after signing
- 1:19:56what Lululemon. So that's going to be a nice
- 1:19:59little paycheck. They're both three years as
- 1:20:02well. That's nice for security and I'm
- 1:20:04unlikely we know this. Is she feeling healthy now?
- 1:20:10Healthy. She's on the road to.
- 1:20:12And I don't think she's any races planned.
- 1:20:14But if it was, it'd be like, I'm going to say no, I think she's
- 1:20:16actually going to do a track season.
- 1:20:18She's going to do a track season.
- 1:20:19So no marathon. She'll do like an or winter
- 1:20:22marathon. But yeah, so she'll be she's
- 1:20:25made no, like everyone knows she's gone for that with LA
- 1:20:28Olympics. So don't know what the
- 1:20:30qualifying time is. Sort of women 220 low probably.
- 1:20:33So yeah. And then go, go also run.
- 1:20:39I was going to say I'm Philly. But I'm Philly Bowden I won't
- 1:20:43name. Them, but they'll they'll know
- 1:20:45who they are. One of my old training partners
- 1:20:48back home used to have a little crush on Philly Bowden and we've
- 1:20:51seen her at a race once and he wanted to go up and ask her for
- 1:20:55a photo but he was too embarrassed to.
- 1:21:01Should we just shout him out? Now on the pod.
- 1:21:04Yeah, he. If he's listening, then he's
- 1:21:06bright. Red so I'll I'll.
- 1:21:08Leave her at that and tag Philly in this so she actually.
- 1:21:15She might be engaged, but. You never know.
- 1:21:19A goalkeeper has a goal and you should still try and score
- 1:21:24anyway. Go go.
- 1:21:25He runs a new 100. Meter records. 10 flat, don't
- 1:21:29know, the guess is pretty fast, but you want to be running 9
- 1:21:32low. He is 1617, so he's still pretty
- 1:21:35young. But yeah, it's just tired.
- 1:21:37Charlotte in there for the sprinting fans that listen to
- 1:21:40this distance podcast. Yeah.
- 1:21:43What's gout have to do to get a sub 10 on the board?
- 1:21:46He done it in Perth, didn't he? And it was wind illegal.
- 1:21:49And now he runs 10 dead. Yeah, I just, I don't know, but
- 1:21:54he is. So young like.
- 1:21:55You'd like to think you'll run faster and he gets bigger and
- 1:21:57stronger. So I think he's still in a good
- 1:22:00place. Training weeks.
- 1:22:02You guys can speak in as much detail or lack.
- 1:22:05Of detail as you like. I'll give a quick summary before
- 1:22:08I hand over to you and should also say that training weeks are
- 1:22:13proudly brought to you by Gnomeo.
- 1:22:15They've been helping us out with some products to help support
- 1:22:18our training weeks and we enjoy talking about the athletes which
- 1:22:23they also help out as well. So last week I mentioned that
- 1:22:26Finnish woman, the marathon runner who'd run 5 marathons in
- 1:22:31six months and said at the time, I wonder if she's because she's
- 1:22:35Nordic, she's on the no MU list. So then after we recorded one on
- 1:22:40Instagram, what she got on her bio, her broccoli emoji.
- 1:22:45So they're doing something right.
- 1:22:48My training. Week consisted of three. 140.
- 1:22:52K on the bike somehow and 50K of running but so mentally now.
- 1:22:59I don't want to. Jinx it, but I.
- 1:23:01Think I've stopped looking back. Over my shoulder and being so
- 1:23:05nervous about this injury. I think now I can start to look
- 1:23:08forwards and slowly build this 50K or week on week.
- 1:23:15I think from now on you don't even mention on the part
- 1:23:17because. It's actually irrelevant.
- 1:23:18You've been. Running like 50K, like if it's
- 1:23:20not sore, it's gone. It's around in the past, Move
- 1:23:23on. Yeah.
- 1:23:24OK, there we go. This morning I was saying.
- 1:23:27To Dean earlier, I'd done like 15 minutes worth of study and it
- 1:23:31was the first time I'd ever, not ever.
- 1:23:33It was the first time where I was focused on like what my
- 1:23:36heart rate was and how it felt rather than how my foot felt.
- 1:23:40So I think that's as good a sign as any that that's a very
- 1:23:45impressive weight. That's was that over 15 hours,
- 1:23:5016 hours. It's been time he put it in.
- 1:23:54He's been fucking Dawson for the last.
- 1:23:56Like 4 months, yeah, We just need you to stack these weeks.
- 1:24:01Now, yeah, that yeah. As you transition, I mean.
- 1:24:07That's some good aerobic base like you've done a good.
- 1:24:10Month on the bike. Avenue, it's good, four weeks of
- 1:24:12aerobic fitness, so hopefully it translates as you convert across
- 1:24:16to more running. We'll see.
- 1:24:18Put it all on the line of bridges.
- 1:24:24I can, yeah. I'll look.
- 1:24:25I can race through my week as well.
- 1:24:27It was. I did 100 KS of running and 150
- 1:24:31KS of riding. So a couple of like lot of
- 1:24:35workouts, bike interval sessions, steady run, long run
- 1:24:40and a longer like steady bike. We like the key parts other than
- 1:24:44just and then some easy spins and some easy jogs.
- 1:24:48So yeah, things are getting better.
- 1:24:52I wouldn't say I'm completely not thinking about my groin area
- 1:24:56just because I'm getting some tightness, but that tightness is
- 1:24:59definitely getting better, which is good.
- 1:25:02I had some physiotherapy during the week which helped and yeah,
- 1:25:05keep working on it. Am I allowed to ask?
- 1:25:10How come I can't see? The majority of this running on
- 1:25:12Strawberry. Oh yeah, I did a workout with.
- 1:25:17RAF the other day and he's Oh dear, no mate, could be good if
- 1:25:19we can put it, you know, put it on private or something like
- 1:25:23that and I'm like it's easy. Sometimes it's easier just to
- 1:25:26say yes. So I've.
- 1:25:27Done what I've done. What I've been asked to do.
- 1:25:30Wonder what he's got cooking for here if he wants you to go
- 1:25:33private. 3 double threshold days hopefully.
- 1:25:39Then we'll be on to a winner if that's the case.
- 1:25:41Yeah. Now I'm still trying.
- 1:25:45It's good that you're. Back.
- 1:25:47Doing some workouts. And hopefully it sticks.
- 1:25:50That's what we need, isn't it? Yeah, my week.
- 1:25:54So this. Is.
- 1:25:56Yeah, coming off armor and feeling all right Monday, just
- 1:26:01easy double and 45 minutes in the morning, 45 minutes in the
- 1:26:05evening. The mornings and evenings,
- 1:26:09they're getting brighter. Guys, I can sort of.
- 1:26:11See somewhere is it's slowly, slowly coming.
- 1:26:15It's getting like near the end of the run.
- 1:26:17You don't need the headlight on. So we're getting there.
- 1:26:20I salute all of my Irish UK guys.
- 1:26:23We've we've made it well, we're making it Tuesday.
- 1:26:28I dawn 50 in the morning just chilling.
- 1:26:30And then the evening I have sort of a session.
- 1:26:32So it was 4 by 1200 meters off 2 minutes.
- 1:26:37Again, this is my gravel track. So I think time is absolutely
- 1:26:40irrelevant because I don't know off the distance I'm running.
- 1:26:43And so yeah, trying to aim for to get myself really, really
- 1:26:48don't know. Maybe three 30s for the 1200,
- 1:26:51something like that. And then I treat by 300.
- 1:26:55What's the effort meant to be? The 1200 around 5K around 5K
- 1:26:58for. Sure, yeah.
- 1:27:01Maybe a little bit slower. And then three.
- 1:27:04By 300 off 90 seconds and these are in 484747 high so yeah, 47
- 1:27:10high for 247 highs and then 48 which yeah, just get the legs
- 1:27:14moving. Wednesday morning 75 easy SO16K
- 1:27:19and then the eve. Then I had my circuits class
- 1:27:23Thursday morning, 60 minutes with a 15.
- 1:27:25Minute pickup at the end. So the pickup, I'm trying to hit
- 1:27:28like under three 20s between 3:20 and like 315, and I find
- 1:27:33that so hard, going from like a 430 and then trying to pick it
- 1:27:38up to like a 32315. I think it'd be so much easier
- 1:27:42if you just like started off at that 3/23/15 that held it for
- 1:27:45the hour. Yeah, hard.
- 1:27:48But I feel like it's good. That's sort of changing pace.
- 1:27:52You know what doesn't seem to get programmed very much for
- 1:27:54people? Like when you see.
- 1:27:56So many people's training and like care about what they're
- 1:27:58doing, progression runs. And I used, when I used to do
- 1:28:02them like a couple of years ago, I used to enjoy it so much.
- 1:28:05Like it's such a good feeling, isn't it?
- 1:28:07We used to do them like every Saturday or every second
- 1:28:10Saturday. Like 75 minutes and every 15 or
- 1:28:1320 minutes you would pick up, pick it up.
- 1:28:15A lot of fun in a group. It was great.
- 1:28:19And you do just. Yeah, they're so much fun.
- 1:28:24I think I see, I see funnily. Enough seeing Cam Myers the
- 1:28:27other day on. Strava.
- 1:28:29And you see them titled as this sometimes, like easy to study,
- 1:28:33but still it's not quite that like constant picking it up,
- 1:28:36picking it up, picking it up. That's just like kind of two 2
- 1:28:39pace changes. But yeah.
- 1:28:43And yeah, so Friday day. Off went to my physio, David.
- 1:28:46I was. Just get the weekly massage into
- 1:28:50the legs. And then Saturday was sort of
- 1:28:52like my last hard session before National Indoor 3K, which is
- 1:28:56coming up this Sunday. So session was 10K threshold or
- 1:29:0010 minutes threshold, sorry, 10 minute threshold, 5K5 minute
- 1:29:04rest. And then it was three sets of
- 1:29:071000 meters, what was supposed to be a 3K pace, 2 minute rest,
- 1:29:12and then 600 meters, like slightly faster than 3K pace, 5
- 1:29:17minute rest, go again. That's it.
- 1:29:20That's fertile. It's brutal.
- 1:29:22Yeah, but John makes it even more brutal if there.
- 1:29:24Is a fucking hurricane going down the freaking home straight
- 1:29:29and it's pissing rain. So during warm up it was grand.
- 1:29:33No, I joined warm up. It was grand and was like Oh my
- 1:29:36God, we should actually run faster today.
- 1:29:39Literally take off the tracks of arms and the heavens open and
- 1:29:43it's it's crazy. It's like someone just fucking
- 1:29:45cursed me. Anyway, I tried my bad like pace
- 1:29:49again, went out the window and like for the first one I think I
- 1:29:52held like I'm trying to hold between like 250 and a 245, umm.
- 1:29:59But again, like the weather is just so, so shit.
- 1:30:02I put spikes on for the last two reps umm And yeah, it was like
- 1:30:07it was a really, really tough day because like these are the
- 1:30:10sort of sessions like you're really up for that.
- 1:30:12Like, OK, if I do this like I'm ready and it can sort of mess to
- 1:30:16your head a little bit because you didn't hit the pace as
- 1:30:19you're meant to hit, but had you not had the all the body of work
- 1:30:24of the last? Three months, then I think this
- 1:30:26would be quite damaging. But then you're just like, I
- 1:30:29mean, this is like the third time you've had you've had to
- 1:30:32just muscle your way through the workout, right?
- 1:30:35Yeah, Yeah. And that's like, yeah, like just
- 1:30:37AB AB plus workout B. Minus workout like just get it
- 1:30:40done. It's not the end of the world
- 1:30:42and I still did like, guess being likes like, like, fair
- 1:30:45enough. If I'm able to run like them 240
- 1:30:47fives in outdoor track into a hurricane, hopefully on an
- 1:30:51indoor track when I'm freshened up and I'm chasing people,
- 1:30:55hopefully that will be a tiny bit faster.
- 1:30:57Yeah. And is that what you know you?
- 1:31:01Take 45 OK for UK reps. Well, I blew.
- 1:31:04Up in the middle, I think it was around 2 feet at average I'd
- 1:31:06say. Around 2:50 and blew up.
- 1:31:09Well, it's still I'm a shit out. Say yeah.
- 1:31:14And yeah, look, it's not the end of the.
- 1:31:16World like I didn't obviously you're sad after it like you
- 1:31:19sort of think about too much but like bigger picture it was still
- 1:31:22like a decent session and then that evening I just got out for
- 1:31:27four or five minutes 10K and then Sunday was umm did I I told
- 1:31:34you the story about my headphones did.
- 1:31:36I did. I speak about this?
- 1:31:37Yeah. Only briefly.
- 1:31:39You just mentioned at the start that it was umm.
- 1:31:43Dog Island, Yeah. OK, so.
- 1:31:46So basically it was 60 minutes and.
- 1:31:47Then. 5 or 600 meter strides, so down to 60 and I normally leave
- 1:31:53my actually there was really bad floods on my Rd.
- 1:31:56I sent pictures on my Strava and basically my mom lost The Reg
- 1:32:00plate, The Reg plate of her car. So I've actually found that in a
- 1:32:03ditch. So picked that up and then I put
- 1:32:06that at the bottom of the road and my put my phone on it and my
- 1:32:092 beats had to know Earpods on the ground and I normally do my
- 1:32:12strides up and down there and I'd 5 done fucking off the end
- 1:32:16of the road and this little bastard of a dog is sniffing
- 1:32:18around my phone and I was like fuck him.
- 1:32:21So I ran down. Only one of my beats headphones
- 1:32:23is there. So grant I should have one more
- 1:32:27stride to do and the dog made a dart for it.
- 1:32:30So I'll do the stride and then I'll run after the dog do the
- 1:32:33stride. I see legged after the dog, the
- 1:32:36dogs after running into its back garden.
- 1:32:37So I have to run into like some my neighbour's back garden and
- 1:32:41he is there and like, you know, like there's this robbery part
- 1:32:45of the headphone and he has that separate, I don't know, head a
- 1:32:48little bass or a separator. And because I'm only after
- 1:32:52Gandhi is because the shocks I'm.
- 1:32:54Going to burn another bridge well.
- 1:32:55The shocks aren't the best for running in the country or in an
- 1:32:57Irish winter when it's super windy because you can't hear
- 1:33:00shit and so these ones are really good.
- 1:33:09These ones are really good and I.
- 1:33:11Was I was actually on my run, I was.
- 1:33:12Like Oh my God, life is so good. It's getting brighter like my
- 1:33:17because before the shocks I'd and old Airpods and they were
- 1:33:19shit and I was like, Oh my God, I'd listen to music and all this
- 1:33:22and then the dog goes off and freaking mix one of them.
- 1:33:25Thank God he you can see a few little teeth marks in it, but
- 1:33:29they work perfect. I was this close to I'd never
- 1:33:32hurt an animal, but Jeannie Matt goes close to doing that dog
- 1:33:36anyway. I didn't, I didn't.
- 1:33:40So got the week done then this morning and I nearly died.
- 1:33:44But anyway. And yeah, so this week I think
- 1:33:47of a session on Tuesday just to feature hundreds, but yeah, all
- 1:33:52teams gearing up for the indoor 3K with the big where is where
- 1:33:57is it? This is it one.
- 1:33:58It's indoor track in Ireland. No, there's, I think there's two
- 1:34:02or three, but. It's in the one in Dublin, like
- 1:34:05the main one. Yeah, be exciting.
- 1:34:09Hopefully I'll get in the air race.
- 1:34:11Brilliant Will. You be on the the fly carb for
- 1:34:14that. I.
- 1:34:16Will be on the fly. Carb 100.
- 1:34:19Percent and I'll do. My usual routine.
- 1:34:21Now I don't know, do you think do you think the benefit, do you
- 1:34:24think be beneficial to like do the beat routine again or is
- 1:34:28that only for longer stuff or will it still benefit me for
- 1:34:30like a 3K car indoor? I think it's still benefit you.
- 1:34:35I'm sure we can I. Can check but I'm.
- 1:34:37I my expectation is that it would so I might like beetroot
- 1:34:41Namio. And bicarb, fix gel,
- 1:34:46electrolytes, caffeine and then. Yeah.
- 1:34:49Ripper I wonder how much I spent before a race and I still come
- 1:34:52like fucking on. My last ones have been Valencia
- 1:34:56100 and I don't know what 108 are.
- 1:35:00My 34th, this one hopefully from 24th and this one there's been a
- 1:35:04serious issue. It's a drop in the ocean
- 1:35:07compared to this Cycling World that Ryan and I ventured.
- 1:35:10Over to, that's for sure. But look, it's worth it if
- 1:35:13you're running well. So that's it.
- 1:35:17Yeah, there's fresh mornings are.
- 1:35:18Just starting to. Reappear and I'm like, shit, I'm
- 1:35:20going to have. To get myself some some long
- 1:35:22like cycling gear for the winter.
- 1:35:26Oh guys do who? Oh my.
- 1:35:30God, it's going to be. Nippon below 20°.
- 1:35:33There was a lower force. In the other morning, yeah, it's
- 1:35:36fresh. Got I got frostbite.
- 1:35:42Buying my song. Yeah, Sunday 16 that was. 118K
- 1:35:49for the week, so yeah. Easy with this weekend then,
- 1:35:52yeah? At least the fingers crossed
- 1:35:55touch. Wood you're not battling with.
- 1:35:57Illness. Wondering whether you'll make it
- 1:35:59to the start line with this one. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:36:02Feeling good. And I saw just the race.
- 1:36:05The race prior to the illness was the the.
- 1:36:07Ankle was dodgy, wasn't it? So yeah, hopefully you just have
- 1:36:12a smooth transition to the start line here.
- 1:36:15Well, with the way things are going this week with animals, I
- 1:36:17genuinely. Might just like lock.
- 1:36:18Myself in my room or something like that because like the last
- 1:36:22thing you want is an injury or to get like something older than
- 1:36:25running and not running related injury like a bird flying into
- 1:36:30you is so weird in Ireland. Like the?
- 1:36:33General use of the Magpies that attack you.
- 1:36:34Like there's none of that in Ireland.
- 1:36:36Like not many animals can hurt you unless like you go into like
- 1:36:39a field or like cattle or bulls or you actually like after
- 1:36:43bollocks, like nothing can kill you really.
- 1:36:46So when the bird actually flew out me this morning, I was like,
- 1:36:49what the hell? Not fun.
- 1:36:53YouTube Diaries. We covered earlier.
- 1:36:55Ethan, Julie hits. Him up on YouTube.
- 1:36:57Let us know what you think, be cool to chat with them, but
- 1:37:01shit, he'll be in so much demand now after that week.
- 1:37:04We'll see if we can get him once the dust is settled.
- 1:37:09Upcoming races Tokyo. Marathon next weekend, shift
- 1:37:12marathon. Season is well and truly upon
- 1:37:14us, so we go from Tokyo to Boston to London.
- 1:37:17I think is the the transition, isn't it?
- 1:37:20Dean has kindly whipped up the fields for Tokyo.
- 1:37:28Yeah, the. So in terms of the women's.
- 1:37:31Field highway FISA and is it 214 from Chicago last year in
- 1:37:40Sutomay Kabeti Kabeti 21555 from Tokyo in 2024.
- 1:37:47Rosemary Wenjuru from Kenya 2/16/14 from 2024 Magurto Alemu
- 1:37:5721634 from London Bridget Cosky well known name who may have
- 1:38:04been was it previous world record holder or?
- 1:38:06I don't know she'd previously run.
- 1:38:07Run really fast some years ago and then ran 21636 at Shanghai
- 1:38:12last year which was which caught a lot of attention and the list
- 1:38:17goes on. Some notable mentions it's
- 1:38:22Vanessa Wilson from Australia 22834 and Sinead Diver she's
- 1:38:27going in with her Sydney 2023 time of two 3127 but we know has
- 1:38:31run 221 before so yeah pretty. I mean it's pretty deep field as
- 1:38:37you. Imagine what is typical for a
- 1:38:40world major. But yeah on Sunday should be a
- 1:38:42great race. Hopefully they have good weather
- 1:38:44for normally do a broadcast on YouTube that you can catch.
- 1:38:48So hopefully it's a good one to watch, yeah.
- 1:38:54I was just looking at that, the women's list.
- 1:38:56There and usually like the magic number for women is 220, isn't
- 1:39:01it like the proper top end and there you've got 12348 women
- 1:39:07with APB of faster. Than 220.
- 1:39:11So there's the potential for that race to be lightning quick
- 1:39:15given the Tokyo course as well is renowned for being faster
- 1:39:18itself. I think the 1st 5K is it they
- 1:39:21like kind of Chucky downhill a little bit so people can get
- 1:39:25themselves in trouble a bit there.
- 1:39:28Yeah, I remember. Was it rented Japan that ran?
- 1:39:30This one last year, yeah. So I remember, yeah, following
- 1:39:35the stream with that one, so. But it was pretty it.
- 1:39:37Was a bit warm I remember last year, so hopefully they get a
- 1:39:40bit of a cooler, cooler day yeah which looking at all the stuff
- 1:39:45he seems to have been posting that there's.
- 1:39:47So much snow on the ground over there, isn't there?
- 1:39:50Yeah. So that could be could be in for
- 1:39:52a good one. And then on the men's field,
- 1:39:56Timothy Kiplanga Laga is 20255 Guy, Alexander Mutiso 203 low.
- 1:40:04Vincent Kip Kemo, also 203 low. Mangasha from Ethiopia, 203 low.
- 1:40:12To dese to Kili 203 low from Tokyo last year and it goes on
- 1:40:19all the way down. The top 10 or 15 are all super
- 1:40:22fast. Just making it under 205 is
- 1:40:25Saguru Osaka. Who's the?
- 1:40:28Was part of the Nike Oregon Project OR in or around that
- 1:40:32time. Was training under Nike for a
- 1:40:34period of time. Had a break, came back and ran
- 1:40:3620455 in Valencia last year to break the Japanese national
- 1:40:39record. So he's in red hot form.
- 1:40:43Hopefully he has a good race as well.
- 1:40:48Yeah, again, similarly with that men.
- 1:40:50'S field. There's 8 of them.
- 1:40:52Whose PB starts 2O3 something well and one of them's 2O2,
- 1:40:57which usually at these majors you make a 2O3 that fast and the
- 1:41:01the rest 2O42O Five guys, but feels like an attractive
- 1:41:07proposition if you're fit. Like if you're really fit this
- 1:41:11time of year, I think it's Tokyo, the other time of year
- 1:41:14it's Berlin, right? If you want to absolutely RIP
- 1:41:16one. But London's pretty fast.
- 1:41:19But if you're talking world majors, like I think they're
- 1:41:23probably the the pick for this time of year or each season.
- 1:41:28It's probably hard for. British.
- 1:41:30And Irish listeners to. Comprehend why you would go to
- 1:41:32Japan. But obviously geographically for
- 1:41:35us over here, it's a little bit more accessible than going to
- 1:41:38Spain, to Valencia. Well, that's right.
- 1:41:41So we can do one flight into Tokyo, It's 8.
- 1:41:44Hours. And you are an hour different in
- 1:41:46time zone. So like right now it's three
- 1:41:50hours different in time zone. To get to Melbourne takes 3 1/2
- 1:41:54four hours to get there. You have to go double the
- 1:41:56distance. But you cross you a less
- 1:41:58interrupted cultural experience and the way they organize and
- 1:42:04run events and participate in events over there, it makes it a
- 1:42:09very desirable destination. That's pretty.
- 1:42:12Cheap right now I think. Yeah.
- 1:42:15Exactly. And then the AUD we can.
- 1:42:19Go nuts at Lawson's if we so choose.
- 1:42:22To carb load. Oh shit, Owens darted on us
- 1:42:25before Double Trouble and. I know this first one is his and
- 1:42:31I'm not feeling fired up enough to say mine.
- 1:42:34I don't want to be nasty. I'll wait until I'm feeling
- 1:42:37nasty. They're in the log book.
- 1:42:39We'll wait until is it? Rodman's back in town.
- 1:42:44Yeah, exactly. Look forward to it.
- 1:42:47Well. Hopefully we've provided you
- 1:42:48with enough. Juice anyway.
- 1:42:50And as I touched on at the start, you're going to be
- 1:42:54wanting to keep an eye on the Instagram and more importantly,
- 1:42:57the Spotify feeds this week because we think you'll be
- 1:43:00pretty excited about some of the content that's being released.
- 1:43:03So thanks again if you've made it this far, and we'll see you
- 1:43:07next week. See you, mate.
- 1:43:08See you guys.
