- 0:00Speaker 1: Overall, just gre your thoughts on this defense A couple
- 0:03Speaker 1: of a couple of days into Yeah, yeah, a long
- 0:05Speaker 1: ways ago, which is to be expected when you're day
- 0:08Speaker 1: where we are three camp, you know, pushing them pretty
- 0:11Speaker 1: hard as far as the install goes, you know, because
- 0:13Speaker 1: it's different now you're with them so much more than
- 0:15Speaker 1: you used to be with some of the access stuff
- 0:17Speaker 1: you can do this summer. So you know, I think we're
- 0:20Speaker 1: making progress. We're just done. We'reried right now, inconsistent, you know,
- 0:24Speaker 1: we're up and down. And some of that comes with
- 0:26Speaker 1: guys that are young. Some of it comes with.
- 0:27Speaker 2: An experience overall playing football, and someone comes with just
- 0:31Speaker 2: the inexperience in the scheme and second guessing yourself. So
- 0:33Speaker 2: we're building.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Some of the guys that talked about this three three
- 0:36Speaker 1: five scheme, can you kind of explain it to.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Us through the builds we're not present. Yeah, I think
- 0:42Speaker 2: it's more of four two five.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I mean, you look at it sixty percent of the
- 0:44Speaker 1: time last year we're in a fourmat front.
- 0:47Speaker 2: It's just we play with more hybrid type positions. You know.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Our one of our safeties is more of a hybrid
- 0:51Speaker 1: one of our linebackers is more of a hybrid, you know,
- 0:54Speaker 1: so three down linemen, you know, one of the three
- 0:56Speaker 1: linebackers can be an inside guy, can be an outside
- 0:59Speaker 1: guy beyond ball off the ball, do a lot of
- 1:01Speaker 1: different things, which honestly is the polar opposite of a.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Lot of people.
- 1:04Speaker 1: A lot of people are sub packaging the match perks personnel.
- 1:08Speaker 2: For the opposite.
- 1:08Speaker 1: We ask guys to be a little bit more flexible
- 1:10Speaker 1: and what we asked, you know, the skill sets. When
- 1:12Speaker 1: did you start running a Mississippi State? Yea, when coach
- 1:16Speaker 1: Arnette got the job there. You know, he played for
- 1:18Speaker 1: Rocky Long in the Mexican Way Back. So it's been
- 1:22Speaker 1: you know, kind of a disciple of that system meter
- 1:24Speaker 1: since being a player.
- 1:25Speaker 2: And uh and so that's where I learned it.
- 1:28Speaker 1: What's the main thing that that that formation is designed
- 1:31Speaker 1: to take away.
- 1:32Speaker 2: The owner of the pass? Hopefully both, Yeah, hopefully both.
- 1:36Speaker 2: You know that's kind of definition.
- 1:38Speaker 1: But to be honest to your question, look, he's talking
- 1:41Speaker 1: about like the formation of the alignment, the three through five.
- 1:43Speaker 1: I think everybody pictures three down linemen, you know, three linebackers,
- 1:47Speaker 1: five dvs. You know, one stap It might look like that
- 1:49Speaker 1: the next snap, it might look like a four two five.
- 1:52Speaker 1: The next snap it might look like a bear. So
- 1:54Speaker 1: it's just it's it's very multiple and flexible.
- 1:57Speaker 2: What you design.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I remember maybe thirty years ago, the covered team in
- 2:01Speaker 1: a roy what they call it a big nickel.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I don't know if that's similar to what you do.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I think big nickels. Everybody has their own little term.
- 2:09Speaker 1: You know, big nickel means more life. You're playing in
- 2:11Speaker 1: the NFL with a stam linebacker that can cover. You know,
- 2:14Speaker 1: this is now our five DV is a true nickel
- 2:17Speaker 1: and it's a true five dB sus.
- 2:20Speaker 2: You got some new linebackers. Are they all acclimating like
- 2:24Speaker 2: doing Simon? Sure? Sure? Yeah. I think it's a pretty
- 2:27Speaker 2: linebacker friendly system.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And I coached the about this has done a good
- 2:31Speaker 1: job with them, and I think they're learning.
- 2:33Speaker 2: You know, there's a lot that we ask him.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It's a little untraditional and what how we align with
- 2:37Speaker 1: They do sometimes, But why don't think done a good
- 2:40Speaker 1: job you know overall learning what the different things we're
- 2:42Speaker 1: asking would do.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Got a veteran group of guys up front.
- 2:46Speaker 1: How they adapted to this, well, you know, I think
- 2:49Speaker 1: they moved really well. Jilni moves well, Dall moves well,
- 2:52Speaker 1: Price moves well.
- 2:53Speaker 2: The guys coming in has got to learn, you know.
- 2:55Speaker 1: But the thing about those guys, they played a lot
- 2:58Speaker 1: of football. They're tough, they want to win, they ship
- 3:00Speaker 1: on the shoulder, and I think they've adapted well.
- 3:03Speaker 2: When you interviewed and you.
- 3:04Speaker 1: With that tape of the guys that you'll have, did
- 3:08Speaker 1: you find right away that they'll fit into the system
- 3:11Speaker 1: or is it more of a learning adjustment field?
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think both.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I mean that sounds like a cop out answer, but
- 3:19Speaker 1: the truth is looking at it like that, guys like
- 3:22Speaker 1: you know, Donovan Branch all right, he can be a
- 3:23Speaker 1: semi backer, you know he can. He can fit that mold. Okay,
- 3:27Speaker 1: guys like Lake Dixon. He fits our dog safety position,
- 3:30Speaker 1: you know. But at the same time, the flip side
- 3:33Speaker 1: of that is you constantly need to look outside the
- 3:35Speaker 1: box to find your best personnel decisions, you know what
- 3:38Speaker 1: I mean. And so that's the key is how do
- 3:40Speaker 1: we get the best eleven football players in the field
- 3:42Speaker 1: all the time doing things that they can do? And
- 3:44Speaker 1: so it's a constant evaluation on all those things. That's
- 3:47Speaker 1: kind of what you're doing a positionless USAID hybrid athletes
- 3:52Speaker 1: and football players, and you.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Move him around where they wore they can be the
- 3:55Speaker 2: most effective.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I hope, so, you know, I hope, can we find
- 3:58Speaker 1: the most athletic guys in the run, hit, and do
- 4:00Speaker 1: the tough things that you have to do to play
- 4:01Speaker 1: a defensive position, you know in today's game and so
- 4:05Speaker 1: and then once you identify their skill setting with the
- 4:07Speaker 1: do best, hopefully you tailor it to what what that is,
- 4:10Speaker 1: you know, and then obviously per game playing the pull.
- 4:12Speaker 2: That that has to do with it too.
- 4:13Speaker 1: What that's That's the beauty to me, and what we
- 4:15Speaker 1: are able to do is we are able to be
- 4:17Speaker 1: aggressive were it to be multiple within the base system.
- 4:21Speaker 1: We're all is there anything surprising or impressive that you
- 4:24Speaker 1: didn't really expect before you came on campus.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And that you've noticed.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Well, just in terms of facilities, I've been impressed, you know,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I flew in an interviewed Obviously I was pretty impressive facilities,
- 4:33Speaker 1: But as far as our players are concerned, I've been
- 4:36Speaker 1: very impressive with their willingness to work. I said it,
- 4:38Speaker 1: you know, I said it in spring ball, their willingness
- 4:40Speaker 1: to learn, their willingness to compete and the willingness to
- 4:42Speaker 1: have a chip on their shoulder and do things that
- 4:44Speaker 1: maybe whether they have done it before or not done
- 4:46Speaker 1: it before, you know, they're they're into it.
- 4:49Speaker 2: And as long as we keep doing that, we'll make progress,
- 4:51Speaker 2: you know.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And that's easy to say, hard to do, especially when
- 4:54Speaker 1: you're going through a full camp, you know.
- 4:55Speaker 2: So, uh, that's what we're pushing to do right now,
- 4:58Speaker 2: consistently
