Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Five minutes past the hour. It is the third hour
- 0:10Speaker 1: of the Morning Show with Preston Scott. Great to be
- 0:12Speaker 1: with you this morning. Obviously we're paying attention now. It's
- 0:15Speaker 1: a whole new world because of the likelihood of a
- 0:19Speaker 1: storm impacting our region by the end of the week.
- 0:22Speaker 1: But that is something we will certainly be talking about
- 0:26Speaker 1: with increasing frequency throughout the coming days. But now we
- 0:30Speaker 1: get to reflect on something else, ladies and gentlemen. FS
- 0:34Speaker 1: you want a football game and to talk about it
- 0:37Speaker 1: as irishefellowar chand dot com. It sounds so odd to
- 0:40Speaker 1: put it that way, but it really was a big
- 0:42Speaker 1: deal that they found a way to win.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's where we're at right now, Preston a long time,
- 0:50Speaker 2: it's Florida stake. Gotta win, so yeah, you gotta. I
- 0:53Speaker 2: don't know, I know some people are not enjoying it,
- 0:56Speaker 2: but I feel like you probably should enjoy a win
- 0:57Speaker 2: after the first few weeks.
- 0:59Speaker 1: All right, Before get into the specifics now, I'm just curious,
- 1:03Speaker 1: do you guys drive over to SMU this week? Are
- 1:06Speaker 1: you flying over? How you covering the game?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Well, I'm supposed to be flying and so we'll see
- 1:12Speaker 2: how the weather goes one of our other guys of
- 1:16Speaker 2: Matt is gonna be flying also, although he's from Dallas.
- 1:19Speaker 2: So he's told me if the storm looks like it's
- 1:21Speaker 2: gonna be bad, he's gonna drive Thursday morning if he
- 1:25Speaker 2: can beat it. So he's fine with driving. I'm only
- 1:27Speaker 2: going if I can fly.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah, if you're driving, I would absolutely leave in the
- 1:31Speaker 1: morning on Thursday, because after that you might not get
- 1:35Speaker 1: across I ten. But anyway, all right, so they've got SMU.
- 1:39Speaker 1: We'll get to that in a couple of segments. What's
- 1:42Speaker 1: your what's your big picture of the win on Saturday night?
- 1:47Speaker 2: You know? To me, you know, and I've had a
- 1:49Speaker 2: lot of conversations with frustrated FSU fans. My feeling is, look, man,
- 1:54Speaker 2: this team was bad on both sides of the ball.
- 1:57Speaker 2: The only thing that's been good for the first month
- 1:59Speaker 2: of the season really was special teams, and you know,
- 2:02Speaker 2: specifically Mastermano with Fitzgerald. And so the defense showed some life.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I felt like against Memphis started playing a little bit better,
- 2:10Speaker 2: and then this game, I thought you saw a lot
- 2:12Speaker 2: more from the defense, especially the defensive line. That's the
- 2:15Speaker 2: defensive line we've all kind of been expecting to see
- 2:17Speaker 2: all season, so that's a positive. The offense is still,
- 2:21Speaker 2: you know, kind of a train wreck. That had two
- 2:23Speaker 2: nice drives, but other than that, it was it was
- 2:25Speaker 2: really rough. So you know, to me, it's it's incremental growth,
- 2:28Speaker 2: it's some improvement, and it's a win, which could help
- 2:31Speaker 2: these guys because listen, I mean and you played sports
- 2:34Speaker 2: and covered sports, and you know, winning changes just the
- 2:38Speaker 2: mindset of the whole program. So I think it opens
- 2:40Speaker 2: up the opportunity for more players to improve because they're
- 2:43Speaker 2: in a better frame of mind.
- 2:44Speaker 1: What can you tell us about Joshua Farmer because he
- 2:47Speaker 1: made a comment in the post game that I wasn't
- 2:49Speaker 1: sure exactly because I didn't catch the whole thing talking
- 2:53Speaker 1: about removing some cast that allowed him to play. Because
- 2:56Speaker 1: I'll tell you what, he's different in the last two games,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and as a result, that defense is different.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Completely different, one hundred percent. Yeah. So, he he had
- 3:05Speaker 2: an injury. The reason he didn't play in the bowl
- 3:07Speaker 2: game last year is he had a hand injury, hand
- 3:10Speaker 2: or wrist, and so he had surgery before the bowl
- 3:13Speaker 2: game so that he could hopefully get back for spring practice.
- 3:16Speaker 2: But it must have been pretty severe because he missed
- 3:20Speaker 2: almost all of the spring practice, and then even in
- 3:22Speaker 2: the preseason camp he was still a little bit limited.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And then when he played, he had like a brace
- 3:27Speaker 2: or something on his wrist to protect his wrists or
- 3:31Speaker 2: his hand, and he played with that for the first
- 3:33Speaker 2: two games. I think the plan was to play aff
- 3:35Speaker 2: season with it, and after the second game he just
- 3:38Speaker 2: felt like it was really kind of limiting what he
- 3:40Speaker 2: could do in terms of grabbing offensive lineman and so
- 3:43Speaker 2: he took it off. And in these last two games,
- 3:46Speaker 2: as you said, I mean he had he had five
- 3:48Speaker 2: total tackles and no tackles for lost in the first
- 3:50Speaker 2: two games this season. In the last two games, I
- 3:53Speaker 2: think he's had about nine total tackles but seven tackles
- 3:57Speaker 2: for lost. Six or seven tackles we lost in the
- 3:59Speaker 2: life to games, and a lot of times he opens
- 4:02Speaker 2: things up, you know, a lot of Patrick Payton had
- 4:04Speaker 2: three sacks in that game Saturday, but at least one
- 4:07Speaker 2: or two of them were sprung by Josh Farmer, putting
- 4:09Speaker 2: pressure and forcing the quarterback into Peyton.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You know, you and I have talked about what seems
- 4:15Speaker 1: to be a little bit of a lacking in leadership
- 4:19Speaker 1: on the football team among the players a little internal fire.
- 4:22Speaker 1: One of my sons said over the weekend that Josh
- 4:26Speaker 1: Farmer making that statement saying I'm playing without the cast,
- 4:29Speaker 1: We're going to get after it, that that's the first
- 4:32Speaker 1: spark of leadership be seen. It seems that that might
- 4:35Speaker 1: be some there might be some truth to that.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's a good perception, there's no question.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I mean one of the things that I think that
- 4:42Speaker 2: you know, when people talk about leadership, I think, again,
- 4:45Speaker 2: what everybody visualizes somebody standing at the room like in
- 4:48Speaker 2: a movie in the locker room and getting everybody fired up,
- 4:53Speaker 2: But so many other times it's really just about who's
- 4:56Speaker 2: are guys willing to put their body on the line,
- 4:58Speaker 2: or are guys willing to to really just kind of
- 5:01Speaker 2: sell out for the team. And if one or two
- 5:04Speaker 2: or three or five guys do that, and then it
- 5:06Speaker 2: becomes contagious. And I feel like that is I think
- 5:09Speaker 2: that's very perceptive, and you know, I think that that's
- 5:12Speaker 2: something It felt like this team, it seemed like this
- 5:15Speaker 2: team wasn't really kind of going over that line. But
- 5:18Speaker 2: maybe you're starting to see that.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Oh look a bike with one of those bells and
- 5:22Speaker 3: a radio, just like the seventies. I yeah, I traveled
- 5:28Speaker 3: with a radio taped to my bike. This is the
- 5:32Speaker 3: Morning Show with Preston Scott.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Back with Irashafellowarchant dot Com. I'm gonna do what I loathe.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I'm gonna play armchair quarterback for a second. I can't
- 5:50Speaker 1: get my brain around the fact that at this point,
- 5:54Speaker 1: here's what I've arrived at with our offense. We're asking
- 5:57Speaker 1: a kid who is a prototypical pro style quarterback who
- 6:02Speaker 1: cannot run, to run an option offense in the running game,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and we have no option. Why didn't Mike change his
- 6:11Speaker 1: offense up either pare it down? But there's he doesn't
- 6:15Speaker 1: he can't run. Why are we faking a dive and
- 6:18Speaker 1: hold pulling it out when he can't do it.
- 6:22Speaker 2: You're you're not buying, you're not biting on the quarterback keep.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Well, let's put it this way. It's not worked yet,
- 6:28Speaker 1: and it's four games in. It's just but I mean,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I look at the pros. They don't with the exception
- 6:36Speaker 1: of the athletic quarterbacks that might have pulled occasionally pulled
- 6:38Speaker 1: the thing out and go. The fact is they don't
- 6:41Speaker 1: do that. And that's who DJ is. He's a drop
- 6:44Speaker 1: back thrower who has accuracy issues but can throw the ball.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Why aren't we just running a pro style offense.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I think they're I think they're kind of complacement, rocking
- 6:56Speaker 2: a hard place in the sense that you don't you know. Again,
- 7:00Speaker 2: the offensive line, I thought showed more life and run
- 7:03Speaker 2: blocking this week, so that was a positive, you know,
- 7:07Speaker 2: but this is not a receiving corps that's very dynamic
- 7:11Speaker 2: and you know, and I think that the offensive line
- 7:14Speaker 2: has not been very good either, and so I feel
- 7:16Speaker 2: like he's doing whatever he can to try to give
- 7:20Speaker 2: the receivers more time to get open. So if you
- 7:22Speaker 2: if you do run the play action or you know,
- 7:25Speaker 2: whether it's a zone read or it's just just a
- 7:27Speaker 2: normal play action, I'm guessing he's thinking that at least
- 7:29Speaker 2: put some of the linebackers maybe safeties in conflict, and
- 7:32Speaker 2: that'll help these wide receivers get up. And that's my theory.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I can ask him. But at the end of the day,
- 7:38Speaker 2: I just think if you're if you're an offensive football
- 7:41Speaker 2: team with a quarterback who's not very good and DJ
- 7:43Speaker 2: has not played anything close to very good, and you
- 7:46Speaker 2: don't have very talented receivers, I just think passing is
- 7:49Speaker 2: going to be difficult, so you can rearrange the chairs
- 7:52Speaker 2: on the Titanic. I don't know how much better it's
- 7:54Speaker 2: going to be. That's why I think leaning more into
- 7:56Speaker 2: the running game, which they did effectively early this game.
- 8:00Speaker 2: For most of the first half, they ran the ball well,
- 8:02Speaker 2: they just didn't perform well when they got towards the
- 8:05Speaker 2: red zone. You know, I think that's going to be
- 8:08Speaker 2: the only real ticket for this offense.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Well, i'll tell you what. I feel like you need
- 8:12Speaker 1: to give a medal of honor to Jakai Douglass because
- 8:16Speaker 1: he's just a gamer. He just finds a way to
- 8:18Speaker 1: get open and make tough catches when most guys don't
- 8:22Speaker 1: want to. But I don't know, he doesn't seem like
- 8:26Speaker 1: he's going to change quarterbacks, So it seems as though
- 8:29Speaker 1: he owes it to DJ. If that's the case, to
- 8:31Speaker 1: not put him in a position where everybody on the
- 8:33Speaker 1: defensive side of the ball knows he's not pulling and
- 8:36Speaker 1: running and if he does, we'll catch up with him.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I mean, you know a defensive tackle can run him down.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Yeah, no question. And that's why you know, myself and
- 8:46Speaker 2: I think a lot of people would like to see
- 8:49Speaker 2: broccoln and get a chance, not even not to say
- 8:51Speaker 2: that he's a better overall quarterback than where DJ is
- 8:54Speaker 2: right now. Rock still a redshirt freshman, but he does
- 8:57Speaker 2: have athletic ability, he does have a desire to run,
- 9:00Speaker 2: and he's going to look to you know, he's going
- 9:02Speaker 2: to look to make plays with his legs. So I
- 9:05Speaker 2: think with everything FS She's facing, he still gives them
- 9:08Speaker 2: a great chance to win. If Florida State hadn't gotten
- 9:11Speaker 2: that early lead and it kind of felt like they
- 9:13Speaker 2: were POSI control of the game early on, I wonder
- 9:17Speaker 2: if you would have gone to broccoln at least see
- 9:19Speaker 2: what it looks like. But then once you have a
- 9:21Speaker 2: slim lead, I think you probably don't want to take
- 9:23Speaker 2: a chance that maybe he did something to cost it.
- 9:25Speaker 2: So I still think there's a chance brocclyn gets into
- 9:28Speaker 2: one of these games and we'll see what it looks
- 9:30Speaker 2: like if he does.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Twenty one minutes past the hour the Morning Show with
- 9:38Speaker 1: Preston's got talking a little FSU football and joining us
- 9:41Speaker 1: Iris Chaffel from Warchan dot com, Ira, your colleague Corey
- 9:45Speaker 1: Clark wrote, I thought a really fascinating piece on the
- 9:49Speaker 1: offensive line and just taking more of a I guess,
- 9:53Speaker 1: thirty thousand foot view of it and going back and
- 9:56Speaker 1: looking at some numbers, it seemed to point out that
- 10:00Speaker 1: short of Jordan Travis being the incredible athlete he was
- 10:05Speaker 1: running the football, the offensive line and dodging rushes when
- 10:09Speaker 1: he's throwing has been weak for years now improved under
- 10:14Speaker 1: Alex Adkins. But what's your takeaway from that piece and
- 10:17Speaker 1: what points do you think he made that are valid?
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, he and I have been talking about
- 10:22Speaker 2: this for the last couple of weeks because one of
- 10:23Speaker 2: the things we're trying to figure out is again, you know,
- 10:26Speaker 2: you know, because the premise he had earlier in the
- 10:28Speaker 2: year was, you know, does Mike Norvel need Jordan Travis?
- 10:32Speaker 2: And my pushback on that is, go look back at
- 10:34Speaker 2: Mike Norvel's offenses at Arizona State and at Memphis. They
- 10:38Speaker 2: had tremendous offenses top ten in the country practically every
- 10:42Speaker 2: year when he was in Memphis, and so it's not
- 10:44Speaker 2: just about Jordan Travis. But then we started kind of
- 10:47Speaker 2: looking at Alex Akin's track record as the offensive line
- 10:49Speaker 2: coach and honestly, before he came to Florida, State, he
- 10:52Speaker 2: had never been at this level. He'd been at a
- 10:54Speaker 2: Group of five level, and even when he was there,
- 10:56Speaker 2: he had really mobile quarterbacks that obviously can help your
- 11:00Speaker 2: offensive line. And for most of the time he's been
- 11:02Speaker 2: a Florida State at Jordan Travis, who is one of
- 11:04Speaker 2: the most dynamic, mobile quarterbacks you'll ever come across. So
- 11:08Speaker 2: you know, now you start asking yourself, Okay, well does
- 11:11Speaker 2: Alex Atkins can he build an offensive line that helps
- 11:15Speaker 2: a more stationary quarterback, which, as you said earlier, is
- 11:18Speaker 2: what dj Ue Unglea is and maybe that clouded their
- 11:22Speaker 2: perceptions of what this team could be. So again, like
- 11:25Speaker 2: this is you know, a lot of times you can
- 11:27Speaker 2: just make rash judgments and decisions based on one piece
- 11:31Speaker 2: of evidence. I think what we're right now is we're
- 11:33Speaker 2: just kind of collecting all the data and looking at Okay,
- 11:36Speaker 2: maybe this is the problem. And the reality is, you know,
- 11:40Speaker 2: if you haven't coached at the highest level of college football,
- 11:44Speaker 2: maybe you don't realize exactly what you need from those
- 11:47Speaker 2: offensive linemen, and that could color some of the recruiting
- 11:50Speaker 2: decisions they made. So again, I don't think we're ready
- 11:53Speaker 2: to say that Alex Akins is clearly the problem. But
- 11:57Speaker 2: without a mobile quarterback, they have not had any success.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Well, this weekend, SMU is on the schedule, and a
- 12:06Speaker 1: lot of people are going to overlook SMU, but they
- 12:09Speaker 1: just put sixty six on TCU. If I'm not mistaken,
- 12:12Speaker 1: on the road, and I don't see Florida State beating
- 12:16Speaker 1: them in an offensive showdown. So in your mind, what
- 12:19Speaker 1: does this game come down to?
- 12:22Speaker 2: You know, to me, I'm hanging everything on this defense.
- 12:26Speaker 2: You know, I thought the way they played in that
- 12:27Speaker 2: game was big, and I think that's been in there.
- 12:30Speaker 2: You know, this is a team that coming into the
- 12:31Speaker 2: season we thought it would be the defense would be
- 12:33Speaker 2: the strength of this team, and then the running game
- 12:35Speaker 2: on offense, those you know, two things showed improvement. That
- 12:39Speaker 2: wasn't It wasn't constant with the running game, but we
- 12:43Speaker 2: saw some signs where they really ran the ball a
- 12:45Speaker 2: lot better. And then defensively, you know, that was the
- 12:47Speaker 2: best game of the season. It's really two good games
- 12:50Speaker 2: in a row for the defense. And you know that
- 12:53Speaker 2: smusup a lot of points, but they have not played
- 12:55Speaker 2: a lot of great defenses, and you know, I think
- 12:57Speaker 2: TCU turned the ball over some So this is the game.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I think Florida State just has to play a clean
- 13:02Speaker 2: the past to victory for Florida State to me is
- 13:06Speaker 2: you know the defense team that keep them in it,
- 13:09Speaker 2: not make any mistakes and just try to keep it close.
- 13:12Speaker 2: But but uh, you know, they're gonna be an underdog
- 13:14Speaker 2: on the road, and they have not prepared well as
- 13:16Speaker 2: favorites so far, so it's hard to say that they're
- 13:18Speaker 2: definitely gonna go get a win on the road.
- 13:20Speaker 1: That leads me to my next question. I think coach
- 13:23Speaker 1: Norvell is making mistakes, at least in this last game.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Not trotting Ryan Fitzgerald out there, who might be the
- 13:30Speaker 1: best kicker in the country. He's going to have to
- 13:34Speaker 1: take points and not go for it with a questionable
- 13:36Speaker 1: offense when he can take a shot out of field goal.
- 13:40Speaker 1: It doesn't he.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I mean, I agree with you. I think he you know, listen,
- 13:45Speaker 2: I think one of his strengths is a person as
- 13:47Speaker 2: a coach is he is. He has so much belief.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I agree, and but but I think it's become a
- 13:53Speaker 2: problem because going for two the week before, I thought
- 13:55Speaker 2: it was a mistake for the same reason. Uh, just
- 13:57Speaker 2: go ahead and get the one point and then in
- 13:59Speaker 2: this situation, and yeah, they were. It was third and
- 14:01Speaker 2: you know, medium to long around the thirty five yard
- 14:05Speaker 2: thirty eight yard line. I thought the mistake was not
- 14:08Speaker 2: trying to get a few yards on third down to
- 14:10Speaker 2: set up the field goal. Instead they threw it. It
- 14:13Speaker 2: was a complete and then that it would be a
- 14:14Speaker 2: fifty five yard field goal. He decided to go for it,
- 14:17Speaker 2: which it felt like there was slim chance of that happening,
- 14:20Speaker 2: and there was, so Yeah, I think playing for more
- 14:23Speaker 2: field goals might be the answer, because, like you said,
- 14:25Speaker 2: you have one of the best kickers in the country,
- 14:26Speaker 2: maybe the best.
- 14:28Speaker 1: When it's all said and done, what do you think
- 14:29Speaker 1: is going to happen Saturday night at eight o'clock in
- 14:32Speaker 1: uh it's Southern Methodists.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I haven't spent a ton of time breaking down everything
- 14:37Speaker 2: about SMU, but right now, it would be hard to
- 14:40Speaker 2: pick Florida State just because the offense is played. The
- 14:42Speaker 2: offense is plays so poorly at home it's hard to
- 14:44Speaker 2: imagine they're going to play well on the road. So
- 14:47Speaker 2: you know, I think Florida State's going to have a
- 14:48Speaker 2: tough time scoring more than fourteen points again. And if
- 14:51Speaker 2: that's the case, you know, I'd probably pick SMU to
- 14:54Speaker 2: win the game.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Well, bless his heart, DJ's not going to get booed
- 14:56Speaker 1: when he comes out of the tunnel. Let SMU though, Ira, Yeah.
- 15:00Speaker 2: He might get seered over there.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Oh I feel so bad for that kid, I really do.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely not what he signed up for and
- 15:08Speaker 2: it's definitely not what but at the same time, you know,
- 15:13Speaker 2: he's not playing well. And even his father, who's very
- 15:15Speaker 2: active on social media, was on social media this weekend
- 15:18Speaker 2: accepting that that. Listen, you know, you can't question his heart, no,
- 15:23Speaker 2: the character, but he's but he's certainly not playing well
- 15:25Speaker 2: and they all have to get a lot better.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Iras always, thank you. We'll talk again next week.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Thanks pressing to take care, all
- 15:32Speaker 1: Right, Iras Chafelle with us from war chant dot com
- 15:34Speaker 1: twenty seven past the hour
