- 0:22Speaker 1: I'm hunting, I need gear that won't quit. First Light builds,
- 0:26Speaker 1: no compromise, gear that keeps me in the field longer,
- 0:30Speaker 1: no shortcuts, just gear that works. Check it out at
- 0:34Speaker 1: first light dot com. That's f I R S T
- 0:38Speaker 1: L I t E dot com. A lot of talk
- 0:44Speaker 1: these days about the death of late night television. Oh yeah,
- 0:47Speaker 1: you probably don't know where I'm going with this.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I don't know where you're going with it, but I've
- 0:52Speaker 2: been paying attention to the top.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Someone even said it's a it's a by the
- 0:57Speaker 1: Colbert losing his show as a it's bad for the
- 1:01Speaker 1: it's against the constitution. You aware of this.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I was not aware of that.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I read it today. But uh, I'm going somewhere with
- 1:12Speaker 1: this real quick. But I mean, the dude makes you know,
- 1:14Speaker 1: he makes twenty million a year, twenty million dollars a year,
- 1:18Speaker 1: and the show loses forty million dollars a year. The
- 1:21Speaker 1: reason I bring this up is, you know, and those
- 1:23Speaker 1: kind of shows their eyes go great show for you tonight,
- 1:25Speaker 1: ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Are you going to start doing that?
- 1:28Speaker 1: No, because they're not. They're not gonna be able to
- 1:30Speaker 1: do it for long.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Someone's got to carry got to.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Say it show today, ladies and gentlemen. Good thing we
- 1:37Speaker 1: recorded in the morning. That's what I said today.
- 1:40Speaker 2: We should just try to have this air late night
- 1:42Speaker 2: and you can be the new late night shtick thing.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Yeah or yeah, or we do like a deal where
- 1:49Speaker 1: we do some analytics and find out when people mostly
- 1:52Speaker 1: listen to the show and just cater to that group.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Yeah, ten am we do a traffic report.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yeah, because I want to steal the late night group.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Wait till we get a band in here. I mean
- 2:06Speaker 1: one of those late night shows had their budget. They
- 2:08Speaker 1: had to get rid of their.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Talented individuals like I've seen Phil on all kinds of instruments.
- 2:17Speaker 3: For the kids, flute, who plays the drums in here?
- 2:23Speaker 3: You can bang on drums now.
- 2:24Speaker 1: And then I got to get a suit and time
- 2:25Speaker 1: because those guys, for some weird ass reason, wear suits
- 2:28Speaker 1: and ties. I'll never understand nighttime guys. Nighttime show guys
- 2:33Speaker 1: were a suit and tie. Sports guys wear suit and ties.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Which seems why are not just like you're doing sports?
- 2:40Speaker 2: What's that we could have first, like make you a
- 2:42Speaker 2: special suit for the show?
- 2:44Speaker 1: Great show for you this morning, ladies and gentlemen. We
- 2:47Speaker 1: have on this is great, This is like, this is
- 2:50Speaker 1: this is mega producing on Krin's Park. To bring this
- 2:52Speaker 1: whole thing together, we have on the co owners of
- 2:57Speaker 1: pardon me, Bishoffs, Yeah, the co owners of Bischoff's The
- 3:03Speaker 1: Animal Kingdom, a tax dermy shop in Hollywood, California, Ace
- 3:08Speaker 1: and Ray. Okay, the shop here, I'm this is Krin's intro.
- 3:15Speaker 1: It's great. The shop is three hundred years old this.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Year, one hundred and three.
- 3:19Speaker 1: What did I say? Yeah, history by that number, I've
- 3:28Speaker 1: been married seventy one years.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Goes back to Spanish California.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I've been married seventy one years and uh yeah, and
- 3:41Speaker 1: I'm fifteen years old. Uh. The shop is one hundred
- 3:45Speaker 1: and three years old this year. It's known for creating
- 3:48Speaker 1: prop animals for movies and films, but more recently they
- 3:51Speaker 1: become famous as the go to spot for pet owners
- 3:54Speaker 1: who want to preserve dogs, cats, birds, you name it, guys.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Now the reason one of the reasons you boys are here,
- 4:05Speaker 1: Ason ray Is because we have a sort of this
- 4:10Speaker 1: is a little bit of a problem here because we
- 4:12Speaker 1: have a like official tax dermist, John Hayes from Hayes
- 4:18Speaker 1: tax Dermy Studio. Don't you for a minute think.
- 4:21Speaker 5: You're jump out.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Don't you for a minute think you're here to steal
- 4:26Speaker 1: John Hayes's thunder. But Karinn put it to John Hayes,
- 4:30Speaker 1: do you do pets, to which John Hayes said, no, right,
- 4:34Speaker 1: I'm not gonna get into why, but he's he doesn't
- 4:37Speaker 1: do pets, and so therefore we had to bring you
- 4:40Speaker 1: Fellers in to fill our pet niche but also just
- 4:44Speaker 1: a totally different world. But I just don't want you
- 4:46Speaker 1: to start thinking that you're like, oh John Hayes.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Now yeah, but like if you want, he's.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Gonna get a hat that says he's gonna get it.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Hayes tax Dermy hat says better than I mean, you
- 5:00Speaker 1: did bring.
- 5:00Speaker 5: A hot out.
- 5:01Speaker 1: So yeah, something to do with John Hayes. Listen, I
- 5:05Speaker 1: don't want to confuse. Yeah, we're gonna show him a
- 5:09Speaker 1: bunch of Hayes texts Dremy work and say like, how
- 5:11Speaker 1: could you improve upon it? So from we caught Wendy
- 5:18Speaker 1: we caught wend of h we caught Wendy guys because
- 5:22Speaker 1: you were recently. Uh, there was a recent article in
- 5:24Speaker 1: the La Times which which uh caught our fancy. Here's
- 5:29Speaker 1: a passage from the article. Ace Alexander, raise your hand.
- 5:34Speaker 4: For those of you listening.
- 5:35Speaker 1: The guy in the middle, who I like how they
- 5:38Speaker 1: point out the article, who is forty years old? Are
- 5:41Speaker 1: you still forty?
- 5:41Speaker 5: I'm still forty?
- 5:42Speaker 1: Okay?
- 5:42Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 5:43Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 5:43Speaker 1: And Ray Masius am I saying that? Rightsius? Who is
- 5:49Speaker 1: fifty five?
- 5:51Speaker 7: Can that one up?
- 5:54Speaker 1: The four still fifty five? Okay? Good, that's show us
- 5:56Speaker 1: how freshest article is right. The or the fourth owners
- 6:01Speaker 1: in Bischoff's long history have steered the company to meet
- 6:05Speaker 1: the new demand, meaning pet stuffing, well not stuffing. We'll
- 6:09Speaker 1: cover details, describing each other as good friends. The two
- 6:12Speaker 1: men dressed similarly. This is such like weird things that
- 6:15Speaker 1: wouldn't cover. The two men dressed similarly. Okay. They like
- 6:21Speaker 1: to wear black T shirts and black pants, which one
- 6:24Speaker 1: of you is not doing. That checks out, though. Let
- 6:26Speaker 1: me see your pants. We'll call your pants darkwashed. Why
- 6:33Speaker 1: do they care about that?
- 6:34Speaker 5: I have no idea.
- 6:35Speaker 8: Yeah, if someone featured this place they'd say the same thing.
- 6:38Speaker 8: It's a lot of guys between the ages of twenty
- 6:40Speaker 8: five and forty five wearing tallive and tan colored clothing.
- 6:46Speaker 9: It reads like a like a GQ feature, Like the
- 6:49Speaker 9: first sentence is George Clooney takes a bite of his
- 6:50Speaker 9: flying Yeah, we know who.
- 6:54Speaker 1: They usually do that too in the media, and I
- 6:56Speaker 1: guess it pisses women off. But like even women politicians,
- 7:00Speaker 1: they're always as commentary about what they're wearing, always like
- 7:04Speaker 1: what are they wearing? What are they wearing?
- 7:05Speaker 3: So superficial, but.
- 7:08Speaker 1: This being the La times, I guess it's important for
- 7:10Speaker 1: them to point out that you guys wear you'd like
- 7:12Speaker 1: to wear black clothes because that way the blood doesn't show. Probably,
- 7:20Speaker 1: it says you guys are so in sync, and we're
- 7:22Speaker 1: gonna have ninety minutes to find out if this is true.
- 7:26Speaker 1: The article says, you're so in sync you sometimes finish
- 7:29Speaker 1: each other's thoughts.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Damn okay.
- 7:32Speaker 1: You start a thought, what are you thinking right now?
- 7:38Speaker 1: You say right now, I'm saying right now, I'm thinking
- 7:40Speaker 1: right now.
- 7:41Speaker 10: I think it's uh okay.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And then tell what he's thinking.
- 7:44Speaker 5: That's pretty well to be here.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Is that what you're thinking about that right now. Since
- 7:56Speaker 1: taking over the business, both have transitioned to primarily vegan diets.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Is it like the ice cream person that doesn't eat
- 8:04Speaker 1: ice cream anymore?
- 8:05Speaker 5: No?
- 8:06Speaker 11: No, no, See, for me, I just like eating I
- 8:11Speaker 11: eat meat. I just eat clean meat. Be So it
- 8:14Speaker 11: just means I like my grains and I like my meats.
- 8:15Speaker 11: I don't.
- 8:16Speaker 5: It's not, you know, sound like vegetables.
- 8:21Speaker 11: I I eat healthy, you know what I mean, like
- 8:23Speaker 11: to my standards of what everybody has around idea of
- 8:26Speaker 11: what healthy is depending on what you read.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Okay, we're just checking out the other time.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Yea, was that inaccurate reporting because.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Primarily you eat mostly vegetables.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Yeah, he needs more towards the vegan die.
- 8:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:39Speaker 10: Sure, once in a while. Weekends, I you know, I
- 8:42Speaker 10: eat whatever I want so, but during the week I
- 8:45Speaker 10: kind of keep it, try to keep it as clean
- 8:49Speaker 10: as possible and for.
- 8:51Speaker 6: My own you know.
- 8:52Speaker 1: And I'm not here to tell you what to eat.
- 8:53Speaker 4: No, of course, we're just fact checking.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Bishoffs used to be the tax dermist to the stars
- 9:00Speaker 1: in the trophy area, but now we're taxed dermis in
- 9:03Speaker 1: the pet pet preservation area. Then you got to quote
- 9:09Speaker 1: that I don't agree with, but it's probably true for
- 9:12Speaker 1: your clientele. He says, people no longer hunt now they
- 9:17Speaker 1: just love their pets, which I would mostly agree with.
- 9:20Speaker 2: California, Los Angeles.
- 9:24Speaker 1: So we asked them to come on and talk about
- 9:25Speaker 1: their their unique the history of bishops and their unique niche.
- 9:30Speaker 1: And assuming you guys are still in the movie business, Yeah, okay, cool,
- 9:34Speaker 1: So we're gonna we're gonna talk about all that like
- 9:35Speaker 1: an aspect of tax deurmy that you're that our listeners
- 9:40Speaker 1: are probably unaware of. But first in the news, Seth's
- 9:42Speaker 1: wife in the news. No, okay, let me find what
- 9:49Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about with Seth's wife. Everyone knows Sess's wife,
- 9:53Speaker 1: should know. Sess's wife is a Kelsey Morris.
- 9:56Speaker 7: I was gonna say, does she have a name.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Her name is Kel's Morris. If you need to know,
- 10:02Speaker 1: where's my picture? So we're right now Randon and I
- 10:08Speaker 1: are recording our third volume of me Eater's American History.
- 10:12Speaker 1: We did The Long Hunters seventeen sixty three to seventeen
- 10:17Speaker 1: seventy five, and that's about Daniel Boone and the deerskin trade.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Then we did The Mountain Men, eighteen oh six to
- 10:25Speaker 1: eighteen forty, which is about folks like Jim Bridger and
- 10:30Speaker 1: the beaver skin trade. And now we're recording The Hide Hunters,
- 10:36Speaker 1: which is about the buffalo skin trade, and that goes
- 10:39Speaker 1: from eighteen sixty five, the close of the Civil War
- 10:43Speaker 1: to eighteen eighty three, which was the last big kill.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Kelsey Morris, the artist, has done all of our covers.
- 10:57Speaker 1: She did a skull, she did it. We had for
- 10:59Speaker 1: long Hunters, should be in here, somewhere, the original till
- 11:04Speaker 1: I happened to it. Oh, it's in the kitchen. For
- 11:07Speaker 1: the long Hunters, she did us a white tailed deer
- 11:10Speaker 1: skull with a bullet hole punched in his head. For
- 11:14Speaker 1: the mountain men, she did us a rocky mountain beaver trapper,
- 11:17Speaker 1: a mountain man. Where's the where's the thing we had
- 11:22Speaker 1: a minute ago that was showing you.
- 11:23Speaker 4: In your email? It's an email from hunter.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Oh that's the problem, he said it to me. I
- 11:31Speaker 1: can't find it. Uh huh, must have deleted or something.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Oh no, got it, got it, got it, got it?
- 11:43Speaker 1: Where was I For.
- 11:44Speaker 4: The listeners at home? There's now an image on Steve's computer.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Well, I'm gonna show it. To the camera if you
- 11:48Speaker 1: give me a second.
- 11:49Speaker 8: No, no, but I'm just I'm doing the thing for
- 11:52Speaker 8: the people that are driving right now.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Oh oh that's good. Yeah. For the mountain men, she
- 12:00Speaker 1: did a rocky mountain, beaver trapper mountain. For the hide hunters.
- 12:05Speaker 1: We did the thing that was most logical to us,
- 12:07Speaker 1: because we want all the when there, when it's all
- 12:09Speaker 1: said and done, it'll look like a collection. It looks
- 12:12Speaker 1: like a collection. You'll you'll go on to eat apple
- 12:16Speaker 1: books or whatever the hell, and you'll be like, oh,
- 12:18Speaker 1: this is like a thing like these all go together
- 12:22Speaker 1: and they track through time. Well, we had her do
- 12:25Speaker 1: a buffalo skull with bullet bullethole punched in his head,
- 12:29Speaker 1: but that's not where the hide hunters shot him.
- 12:32Speaker 4: That's a great point.
- 12:33Speaker 1: So it's a factual problem. They didn't shoot him there.
- 12:37Speaker 1: And we describe in great detail shot hide hunter shot placement,
- 12:42Speaker 1: which includes some horrifying shot placement.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Deliberate, deliberately horrified.
- 12:49Speaker 1: What's it was an example, I'll give you an example.
- 12:51Speaker 1: For the most part, they shot for the lights, meaning
- 12:55Speaker 1: the lungs. However, we explained in great detail what a
- 13:01Speaker 1: stand was like, how they manage their shooting. The objective
- 13:06Speaker 1: was that you get forty to fifty of them in
- 13:08Speaker 1: a pile. You didn't want them scattered all over hell
- 13:11Speaker 1: because it's hard for the skinners. You'd want them in
- 13:14Speaker 1: a pile. So they do a thing called a stand.
- 13:18Speaker 1: When doing a stand, you had to be careful about
- 13:21Speaker 1: the first one you hit. If you hit in the heart,
- 13:24Speaker 1: it might run one hundred yards and that causes too
- 13:27Speaker 1: much chaos. So they wanted to anchor them. No, oh,
- 13:32Speaker 1: it's just it's terrible.
- 13:33Speaker 4: They wanted them to wobble around.
- 13:35Speaker 1: They wanted to, as they put it, make them sick.
- 13:38Speaker 1: They shoot the wound, they would call it making them sick.
- 13:42Speaker 1: So the first one or two they'd like to hit
- 13:44Speaker 1: them right in front of the hips. Oh, Gutcha the
- 13:48Speaker 1: only And we're teasing Reeve because Reeve has been engineering
- 13:51Speaker 1: for us and the first woman that made it's a
- 13:54Speaker 1: it's a it's a male heavy story, the story of
- 13:57Speaker 1: the Hide Hunters. Imagine it tends to be for whatever reason,
- 14:02Speaker 1: tends to be a lot of guys running around of
- 14:04Speaker 1: the high Hunters. But we're laughing with Riva because the
- 14:08Speaker 1: first woman that we quote, the first woman that we
- 14:11Speaker 1: quote in the whole project is saying it was so
- 14:14Speaker 1: fun to watch Daddy and the guys shoot. They would
- 14:18Speaker 1: shoot and make them sick.
- 14:22Speaker 8: It's like the most disturbing line of text in the
- 14:25Speaker 8: whole thing.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Then, so we're like, reave a perk right up when
- 14:28Speaker 1: a woman came in. But that was immediately disappointed. So
- 14:33Speaker 1: they but they rejected our They rejected the publisher not
- 14:36Speaker 1: rejected like it's not a good word for it.
- 14:38Speaker 4: They asked for alternatives.
- 14:39Speaker 1: They didn't like the skull because it looked too much
- 14:41Speaker 1: like the other skull.
- 14:43Speaker 4: With the hole in it, which is fair.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and then these kind of things you can
- 14:48Speaker 1: pitch a fit, but you're burning uh what are you
- 14:53Speaker 1: burning capital? Capital? Yeah, you're burning capital.
- 14:56Speaker 4: Do you want to spend it on that or on
- 14:58Speaker 4: something else that really?
- 14:59Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 15:00Speaker 1: Or would you rather fight about if they come back
- 15:02Speaker 1: and they're like, hey, how come there's only one woman
- 15:04Speaker 1: and she's crazy? Right, then you can then you can
- 15:08Speaker 1: right fight about that. But so we don't want to
- 15:10Speaker 1: fight about the cover, So seth we we're gonna settle
- 15:13Speaker 1: up on the original picture. Yeah, so it's not a
- 15:19Speaker 1: hit to your family finances. Good, That's what I like
- 15:22Speaker 1: to hear. And now we're gonna do this. Where do
- 15:25Speaker 1: I aim at? Phil?
- 15:26Speaker 7: I just directly in front of you.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Can that camera zoom in though it cannot?
- 15:31Speaker 9: But if I don't know, if you can slack this
- 15:33Speaker 9: to be random, I can put it on the screen
- 15:34Speaker 9: on the TV.
- 15:35Speaker 7: That's even worse.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Maybe hold this over there, Maybe hold this over there.
- 15:41Speaker 7: Now it's a it's going to be out of focus.
- 15:43Speaker 9: All these cameras are on manual focus, so they if
- 15:45Speaker 9: you hold it right up to the camera, it's gonna
- 15:46Speaker 9: be fuzzy.
- 15:47Speaker 1: How about that.
- 15:49Speaker 7: I'll put it on on the TV and on the screen.
- 15:53Speaker 1: That's one way to do it.
- 15:54Speaker 8: Yeah, you're surrounded by a bunch of barbarians, Phil, I'm sorry, Phil.
- 16:02Speaker 1: That's good news. It's good news for Seth. Yeah, it's
- 16:06Speaker 1: kind of bad news for Kelsey because she was explaining
- 16:08Speaker 1: to me that she's a little bit in vacation mode
- 16:10Speaker 1: right now. She is, but.
- 16:14Speaker 12: She can really be in vacation mode when she's actually
- 16:17Speaker 12: on vacation to Ben keep her busy.
- 16:21Speaker 1: And we're working on that right now, right here in
- 16:23Speaker 1: this all all damn day long. Here's a little tidbit
- 16:28Speaker 1: that we're here's just one little tidbit from Yeah, here's
- 16:31Speaker 1: one little tidbit from Hide Hunters. This is one of
- 16:34Speaker 1: my favorite little tidbits, and it's just packed full of
- 16:38Speaker 1: freakish stuff. There's a guy that there's a hide hunter
- 16:41Speaker 1: what was his name? Shoots a shoots a buffalo, goes
- 16:45Speaker 1: up to skin it or shoots it, and it stands
- 16:48Speaker 1: up and goes to attack them.
- 16:50Speaker 4: No, no, is it Kelly Shoot?
- 16:52Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 16:53Speaker 1: I think it's Kelly shoot. Shoots boll by Fort Betton, Montana.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Shoots a buffalo, realize it's not dead, gets his pistol
- 17:02Speaker 1: out to try to finish it off. It stands up
- 17:05Speaker 1: and comes at him. He's in such a hurry to
- 17:08Speaker 1: get on his horse and get out of there that
- 17:10Speaker 1: as he's jumping on his horse, accidentally shoots his horse
- 17:13Speaker 1: in the neck. So now the wounded buffalo is chasing
- 17:17Speaker 1: the wounded horse and they both die.
- 17:19Speaker 4: And he walks away and Kelly walks away unscathed.
- 17:22Speaker 7: Geez.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a lot of seventy thousand words of this stuff.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Rough for a horse man a buffalo.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Yeah, seventy thousand words of this stuff, and it also
- 17:33Speaker 1: explains a great detail, not just that, but sciencey stuff,
- 17:37Speaker 1: a lot of sciencey stuff, like you never knew so
- 17:40Speaker 1: much about mills, production, steam engines, industrial belting, history of
- 17:49Speaker 1: guns as you will when you have this.
- 17:55Speaker 7: Does this do you cover a bunch of different states?
- 17:57Speaker 1: Where does this mostly take place? The main action we
- 18:02Speaker 1: get into occurs. I mean it's all over because there's like,
- 18:07Speaker 1: you know, one minute, you're out in New England because
- 18:11Speaker 1: of hemlocks and tanning, like how tanning worked. But the
- 18:14Speaker 1: main action Western Kansas, North Texas. Oh, really, eastern Montana,
- 18:23Speaker 1: the real big like I would have thought, like the
- 18:26Speaker 1: Dakota's now, No, I mean that's in there. It's real big. Shoot.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Oh go ahead.
- 18:32Speaker 8: I was gonna say, it's like eastern Montana bleeding into
- 18:34Speaker 8: the western part of the Dakotas and northern Wyoming.
- 18:37Speaker 4: But like the heart of it.
- 18:38Speaker 8: Is along the train tracks, and I mean because it
- 18:42Speaker 8: all falls the railroad.
- 18:44Speaker 1: The way to think about it too is that like
- 18:47Speaker 1: we begin to start the hide hunt. The big final
- 18:52Speaker 1: hide hunt didn't kick in until the mid seventies, eighteen
- 18:55Speaker 1: seventeen seventies, so at that point the population was kind
- 19:03Speaker 1: of reduced down to these real core pieces of habitat,
- 19:06Speaker 1: like the fringes. All the fringe was gone, do you
- 19:11Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. It was just like you had
- 19:12Speaker 1: these sort of like main population kind of like down
- 19:15Speaker 1: like down the center of the Great Plains gotchah. By
- 19:20Speaker 1: that point people thought of it. There was the Northern
- 19:23Speaker 1: Herd and the Southern Herd, because all the transcontinental railroads
- 19:29Speaker 1: and the Oregon Trail and stuff had kind of by
- 19:31Speaker 1: that point cleared the middle out and pushed everything away.
- 19:36Speaker 1: So people would talk about it distinctly like north of
- 19:39Speaker 1: the Platte and south of the Platte. Yeah, I mean
- 19:41Speaker 1: even in that era, there was the North Herd and
- 19:44Speaker 1: the South Herd, and it was kind of that main
- 19:46Speaker 1: those sort of like main population centers. And so the
- 19:50Speaker 1: hide hunt occurs in two stages, like the Southern Herd,
- 19:55Speaker 1: whose if you imagine, like the core of the Southern
- 19:58Speaker 1: Herd would be the top of the Texas Panhandle, the
- 20:03Speaker 1: Oklahoma Panhandle and then up into Kansas. From there it
- 20:06Speaker 1: was sort of like that's where you could still go
- 20:08Speaker 1: and see a million animals. Oh really, yeah, like you
- 20:12Speaker 1: could still go in lay eyes on a million animals
- 20:15Speaker 1: in a group.
- 20:17Speaker 7: And Northern Herd was smaller at that point, that's a
- 20:21Speaker 7: good question.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Probably I believe it was.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Yeah, probably a little smaller. Yeah, but you could still
- 20:26Speaker 1: go to Miles City, Montana and and maybe not look
- 20:31Speaker 1: at a million, but look at a lot. Yeah, look
- 20:34Speaker 1: at hundreds of thousands.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, there.
- 20:36Speaker 8: I mean in the early eighteen eighties, they're they're killing
- 20:40Speaker 8: hundreds of thousands.
- 20:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Cool.
- 20:42Speaker 12: Uh.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Speaking of buffalo, here's the thing we've been to it
- 20:44Speaker 1: working on. I'm guessing Phil can't see this. So our cookbooks,
- 20:48Speaker 1: our wild game cookbooks, we always have jerky recipes in
- 20:51Speaker 1: our wild game cookbooks were coming out with uh, buffalo jerky,
- 20:58Speaker 1: bison jerky, whatever the hell you want to call it.
- 21:00Speaker 1: We call it American buffalo. But then, just to this
- 21:05Speaker 1: is the first thing we talk about in our hide
- 21:06Speaker 1: Hunter series. The first thing we talk about is why
- 21:10Speaker 1: the words bison and why the word's buffalo, and which
- 21:12Speaker 1: one is right. I'm a buffalo man myself. Randall Ten's
- 21:15Speaker 1: toward bison, but I've bullied him into being a buffalo man.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I buffaloed him.
- 21:19Speaker 4: It's better for storytelling.
- 21:21Speaker 1: I buffaloed him into being a buffalo man. There's a
- 21:27Speaker 1: whole long story here, Like there's the fashionable number. One
- 21:33Speaker 1: time we had thirty two million, forty million buffalo in
- 21:36Speaker 1: our country. Now we got a half million. Of those
- 21:40Speaker 1: ninety four percent are privately owned. We don't get into
- 21:46Speaker 1: this in our story really, but there's a part of this,
- 21:48Speaker 1: like private producers, private ranchers save the animal from extinction,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and today they're the ones that keep it like ecologically viable. Yeah,
- 21:58Speaker 1: genetically viable and present on the landscape. Like when you're
- 22:01Speaker 1: driving down the road and you see a buffalo, nine
- 22:03Speaker 1: out of ten, it's because a guy owns it.
- 22:05Speaker 4: It's livestock.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, which is like I'd rather have. I'd rather
- 22:10Speaker 1: have tons of wild ones. Politically, I believe in maneuvering
- 22:16Speaker 1: for more wild ones on the landscape, Like we need
- 22:18Speaker 1: to recover the species. But right now, it's its strength
- 22:23Speaker 1: comes from its popularity as a game meet, right as
- 22:26Speaker 1: a wild meat, a farm raised wild meat. So we're
- 22:31Speaker 1: doing these jerky packs where we take the recipes from
- 22:33Speaker 1: our cookbooks and cook them into American buffalo jerky. A
- 22:41Speaker 1: lot of buffalo stuff going on right now around here.
- 22:44Speaker 1: You guys have stuff with buffalo.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Yeah, really, when's that available? Oh, we're teasing it.
- 22:52Speaker 1: August eleven, twenty twenty five. I'll be fighting a big o'
- 22:56Speaker 1: hallib it that day. August eleven, twenty twenty five is
- 23:02Speaker 1: a launch date. We're just launching in classic pepper more
- 23:06Speaker 1: flavors to come.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Stay tuned at a new site meet it or snacks
- 23:13Speaker 2: dot com, Meet.
- 23:14Speaker 1: It snacks dot com. Now is this is the is
- 23:20Speaker 1: the next thing? Are we just into the show? Now?
- 23:24Speaker 3: Yes? We can skip the stolen valor stuff.
- 23:27Speaker 1: If you talk about it's we're talking about see because
- 23:32Speaker 1: you guys, you guys occupy it like a unique niche
- 23:34Speaker 1: and tax dermy. But we were talking about a guy
- 23:36Speaker 1: saying like, like, at what point is taxidermy stolen valor?
- 23:41Speaker 1: Meaning like if you if you hunt deer and you
- 23:45Speaker 1: have a hunting cabin and you go buy a giant buck,
- 23:49Speaker 1: a giant stuffed buck and put it in the tax
- 23:51Speaker 1: in your cabin to a way that people visiting your
- 23:54Speaker 1: cabin might logically be like, he got that buck, Yeah,
- 24:00Speaker 1: but you didn't you bought it? Is that stolen valor?
- 24:03Speaker 1: And so we're trying to weigh out like how this
- 24:04Speaker 1: whole thing works. But you you don't need to weigh
- 24:08Speaker 1: in on that, because I don't want you to alienate
- 24:09Speaker 1: your clientele.
- 24:10Speaker 11: No, no, no, I mean it feels it just depends.
- 24:14Speaker 11: If they actually hunt and then they go purchase, they
- 24:18Speaker 11: go purchase something huge from us, then it seems a
- 24:21Speaker 11: little bit like stolen that. But if they're just like
- 24:23Speaker 11: stylists or house decorators, yes, for people who just you know,
- 24:27Speaker 11: they're not in the hunting world, then it might not
- 24:30Speaker 11: be stole that.
- 24:31Speaker 1: That's where we landed. That's where I landed. I landed.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Is like, are you using it in the way that
- 24:36Speaker 1: could be deceptive?
- 24:38Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, that's one thing? Yeah, right?
- 24:41Speaker 4: Or is it?
- 24:41Speaker 8: I mean I think like if it's if it's someone
- 24:44Speaker 8: you know, if it's like a friend's animal or something like,
- 24:48Speaker 8: you have a sentimental connection to it, like it has
- 24:50Speaker 8: meaning to you.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Other than I just took possession of all my dad's
- 24:53Speaker 1: texts for me, well four pieces.
- 24:54Speaker 8: Yeah, I've got a buddies I've got a buddy's fish
- 24:57Speaker 8: in my garage that's stolen valor.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Your dad, like everybodys good passed away. I'm sorry, my condolences.
- 25:08Speaker 1: What kind of fish? Is it? Huge?
- 25:10Speaker 4: It's a big it's a giant snook.
- 25:13Speaker 6: Dad?
- 25:13Speaker 1: Actually is there?
- 25:14Speaker 5: Okay?
- 25:14Speaker 1: If no, no, no, if I walked into your garage
- 25:18Speaker 1: and you weren't home, what I think holy ship, Randa
- 25:22Speaker 1: caught a big what was it?
- 25:24Speaker 4: Snook?
- 25:25Speaker 1: Yeah, that's stolen valor, but I didn't catch.
- 25:29Speaker 8: If I'm not home though, if you're in my garage
- 25:31Speaker 8: when I'm not home, but stole ship.
- 25:37Speaker 1: I didn't know Randall was a snook fisherman.
- 25:40Speaker 8: Yeah, I guess. I guess in the absence of any context,
- 25:44Speaker 8: you could jump to that conclusion. But most people walk
- 25:47Speaker 8: in they say, oh, that that's a like, where'd you
- 25:49Speaker 8: get that?
- 25:49Speaker 4: That's a big snook? And I'll go it's it was
- 25:52Speaker 4: my buddies.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Does it look old like it's it's a it's not
- 25:56Speaker 2: a partritional it's the original.
- 25:59Speaker 12: I think, like if there's been multiple times where you
- 26:03Speaker 12: have given stuff away after a trip, like I always
- 26:07Speaker 12: regret it, Like you're your bear from the spring you
- 26:09Speaker 12: gave I think he gave the chili.
- 26:12Speaker 1: The skull, Yeah, I gave.
- 26:14Speaker 4: I give him my shoulder mount to Chili.
- 26:16Speaker 12: And Jili is going to office boil that up and
- 26:18Speaker 12: put it on a shelf and be like, that's from
- 26:19Speaker 12: the hunt I was on with Steve.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Steve got that or else it stolen ballant.
- 26:23Speaker 12: Yeah, I think that is just like he's gonna display
- 26:28Speaker 12: that as.
- 26:28Speaker 1: That man was so small that he stolen embarrassment. I
- 26:33Speaker 1: wasn't gonna bring it up. But you want to claim that,
- 26:35Speaker 1: you can go ahead.
- 26:36Speaker 6: Well.
- 26:36Speaker 8: The funny thing about that snook, too, is when I
- 26:38Speaker 8: walked into my buddy's office one time and I was like,
- 26:40Speaker 8: holy shit, that's a big snook.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Where'd you get that?
- 26:43Speaker 8: And he goes, oh, he spread this out because my
- 26:45Speaker 8: dad caught it, and then I got it when he died.
- 26:48Speaker 8: And now I have that fish and I do the
- 26:50Speaker 8: same thing all the way.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Oh, here's a tax to me question. Yeah, so this
- 26:58Speaker 1: this I got this bear well over twenty years ago.
- 27:01Speaker 7: Did you shoot all them holes in there?
- 27:05Speaker 10: No?
- 27:05Speaker 1: I only shot him one time? It was actually maybe
- 27:08Speaker 1: that's no, no, no, no, this has been This has been
- 27:11Speaker 1: employed as a half dozen Halloween costumes. I mean, this
- 27:15Speaker 1: has been through heavy is this? Uh? Here's the thing
- 27:20Speaker 1: I worry about. There's nothing you can do to save
- 27:22Speaker 1: this now?
- 27:23Speaker 5: Right?
- 27:23Speaker 1: Or how would you save it?
- 27:24Speaker 7: For the audio listeners? What are we doing here?
- 27:26Speaker 1: Oh? Sorry? Sorry? Phil. Up until this point it looks
- 27:30Speaker 1: like a polar bear, but it's a black bear and
- 27:33Speaker 1: I and it's it's sun bleached. I keep I keep
- 27:36Speaker 1: it out. We have at like an outdoor patio that's
- 27:38Speaker 1: kind of covered, and I keep it over the couch.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And so over the years it bleached to like a
- 27:45Speaker 1: polar bear. It's my favorite thing. Really not my favorite thing,
- 27:48Speaker 1: one of my favorite, uh specimens. I feel like it's
- 27:51Speaker 1: gotten wiry. It's it needs a good shampoo.
- 27:55Speaker 4: So I was saying, among other things, yes, uh.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I want to give it a good shampooing. But I'm
- 28:03Speaker 1: afraid if it gets wet, it's just gonna fall apart.
- 28:05Speaker 11: It's gonna get stiff and fall apart on you. You agree, yeah.
- 28:09Speaker 1: You can? What could I do? What could I? Is
- 28:11Speaker 1: there anything I could do?
- 28:13Speaker 5: You could oil it?
- 28:14Speaker 1: I did, maybe maybe a little longer than what would
- 28:22Speaker 1: you put on there in your professional opinion.
- 28:24Speaker 11: You know, even Mackenzie oils is you know, there's plenty
- 28:26Speaker 11: of tacks from your companies that have oils. Just a
- 28:29Speaker 11: leather oil, baseball glove oil, you know, any kind of
- 28:31Speaker 11: old to just kind of seep into there a little bit,
- 28:33Speaker 11: brush it on and then honestly ad lay a mesh
- 28:37Speaker 11: and then latex it just because you see these tears
- 28:40Speaker 11: over time you wear that thing, you pull it together.
- 28:43Speaker 11: You need something to hold it together. Otherwise it's gonna
- 28:45Speaker 11: it's gonna end up breaking on you eventually.
- 28:47Speaker 1: So if I shampoo it, I'm screwed.
- 28:49Speaker 11: Oh yeah, it's gonna be stiff as a rock. I
- 28:51Speaker 11: mean it's it's yeah, you can't because you're rehydrating it.
- 28:53Speaker 11: So unless you're gonna mount it, no, it's it's gonna
- 28:57Speaker 11: inania meant it's not gonna work.
- 28:59Speaker 1: But I gotta say fundamental value.
- 29:01Speaker 5: I could latex it, well, you'd have to.
- 29:04Speaker 11: You'd have to lay like a little layer of mesh
- 29:07Speaker 11: over it with adhesive, like flexible adhesive, got it, because
- 29:11Speaker 11: that'll create a bomb pretty much. It'll be like a
- 29:13Speaker 11: skin on the skin, just kind of holding it. So
- 29:15Speaker 11: if you're going to tear this, that holds it together,
- 29:17Speaker 11: and then you can like to latex over that or
- 29:19Speaker 11: back it with something else, whether it's felt.
- 29:21Speaker 6: Like a.
- 29:23Speaker 4: Yeah, flexible.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Do people ever bring you stuff like this in your
- 29:29Speaker 1: shop all the time? Do you turn them away?
- 29:31Speaker 7: Usually?
- 29:32Speaker 10: If it's like most of the time, we we really
- 29:34Speaker 10: it's not because we don't want this, because we're so
- 29:36Speaker 10: basic with all other things that you know, we don't
- 29:39Speaker 10: really have the time.
- 29:40Speaker 6: And then our guy like he mentioned.
- 29:42Speaker 1: He passed, or your rug guy.
- 29:44Speaker 10: Yeah, it's like, unfortunately we haven't found anyone yet, you know,
- 29:50Speaker 10: so we we mostly.
- 29:52Speaker 6: Turn them away.
- 29:54Speaker 1: So if I came in and I was like, please
- 29:58Speaker 1: you turn me away?
- 30:01Speaker 4: How much capital you have?
- 30:04Speaker 11: It sounds but then it just it pulls us away
- 30:07Speaker 11: from bigger, more important projects, sometimes more important.
- 30:15Speaker 4: This looks like, this looks like a passion project. Does
- 30:18Speaker 4: it looks like.
- 30:20Speaker 1: I wasn't planning on getting this out. But and when
- 30:23Speaker 1: you guys came in, we got to talking about just
- 30:26Speaker 1: obviously you taxed there. I mean, it brought to my
- 30:29Speaker 1: my main problem in life right now. But I'm going
- 30:32Speaker 1: to pursue. You might think it's crazy because it's probably
- 30:35Speaker 1: like a lot of money for what I'm sitting here with,
- 30:37Speaker 1: But I'm going to pursue this mesh adhesive solution. Absolutely,
- 30:42Speaker 1: what am I looking at? How much? How much money
- 30:44Speaker 1: am I looking at to fix that up?
- 30:46Speaker 5: I mean it's not it's just time, honestly. I mean
- 30:50Speaker 5: for US.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Four fifty oh oh, it's worth to me. It's my
- 30:57Speaker 1: first pair, first pair. Yeah, how you wouldn't guess it
- 31:03Speaker 1: from looking at it. It was a huge bear. I couldn't
- 31:05Speaker 1: roll that sucker over.
- 31:07Speaker 4: Should have seen this thing when it started.
- 31:11Speaker 1: So did you guys go to taxi army school? How'd
- 31:13Speaker 1: you how'd you you know?
- 31:15Speaker 5: How do you get in just the old timers at Bishops? Yeah?
- 31:19Speaker 1: Yeah, well you started out working there?
- 31:21Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah for sure.
- 31:22Speaker 11: So it was old an Larry, it was like my mentor,
- 31:27Speaker 11: and he was part of the some of the original Bishops.
- 31:30Speaker 11: He was there maybe the forties fifties, and he's passed on.
- 31:33Speaker 11: But yeah, I just came in and I was doing
- 31:36Speaker 11: just music before that, and I friend of mine I
- 31:39Speaker 11: was like, hey, Gary's going out of town blah blah blah.
- 31:42Speaker 11: He watched the shop and then I met Larry and
- 31:44Speaker 11: he was mounting a crow in the back and he's like.
- 31:46Speaker 5: Hey, grumb here, yeah, show him out a crow. And
- 31:50Speaker 5: I was like, it's kind of.
- 31:54Speaker 11: This is kind of interesting, you know what I mean.
- 31:56Speaker 11: And it just kind of went from there.
- 31:58Speaker 1: But you were working there though, I was.
- 32:00Speaker 11: Yeah, I've been working there for like yeah, yeah, four
- 32:03Speaker 11: or five months, and then Larry came in and then
- 32:06Speaker 11: it just it's just you know, I started picking things
- 32:08Speaker 11: up working there, and it all started coming together.
- 32:12Speaker 1: H ray, what about you?
- 32:14Speaker 10: Well, a little bit later on, he mentioned that Gary
- 32:21Speaker 10: wanted to retire and they wanted to sell out, so
- 32:25Speaker 10: we just jokingly said, well, let's jump in, let's buy it,
- 32:27Speaker 10: you know, because he knew the numbers, he was running
- 32:29Speaker 10: the shop.
- 32:30Speaker 1: So oh, but how long had you been there at
- 32:32Speaker 1: that point?
- 32:33Speaker 5: Well?
- 32:33Speaker 6: I hadn't.
- 32:34Speaker 10: I had just been there once or twice to.
- 32:38Speaker 1: So you guys were buddies. Yeah, what how were you guys? Buddies? Well?
- 32:43Speaker 10: We met through music.
- 32:46Speaker 5: What kind of music? Just rock?
- 32:48Speaker 1: Like you guys like to play?
- 32:50Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 32:51Speaker 11: Yeah, we had different projects and then he had some
- 32:53Speaker 11: songs and then I was gonna do some vocals on
- 32:55Speaker 11: the songs. And then just through the years we became friends.
- 32:58Speaker 11: And I think for whatever reason, we were driving by
- 33:01Speaker 11: the shop one day and I was just like, dude,
- 33:02Speaker 11: you got to check out the shop, and then he
- 33:04Speaker 11: checked it. I was like like, wow, this is impressive.
- 33:06Speaker 11: It's like a natural history museum that you can be
- 33:08Speaker 11: up close with.
- 33:09Speaker 1: But you didn't know anything about tax dermy.
- 33:10Speaker 10: I mean, I knew about it, but I really, you know,
- 33:13Speaker 10: it never crossed my mind like to you know, get
- 33:16Speaker 10: into it. Oh my god, you know, like I want
- 33:18Speaker 10: to learn or anything like that. I just thought it
- 33:20Speaker 10: was so cool, like to see the specimen, you know,
- 33:23Speaker 10: all these pieces out there and beautiful and uh it's
- 33:28Speaker 10: like he said, like stepping into a museum.
- 33:30Speaker 6: So it was, you know, just so impressive.
- 33:34Speaker 10: But uh, I never really thought about how is it done,
- 33:38Speaker 10: you know, why is it done? Or ah, to really
- 33:43Speaker 10: go deep into it until he mentioned that, you know,
- 33:47Speaker 10: they wanted to retire and he said the numbers look good.
- 33:52Speaker 1: So oh so he says to you, yeah, you're aware
- 33:56Speaker 1: that tax deurmy is a thing, right, and you're like
- 33:59Speaker 1: looking at it, and then A says, do you want
- 34:03Speaker 1: to buy a text to what? You're like, yeah, yeah,
- 34:08Speaker 1: let's do it.
- 34:10Speaker 10: Let's jump on it.
- 34:10Speaker 6: You know a.
- 34:12Speaker 8: Classic, it's the classic rock music to textrmy pipe.
- 34:16Speaker 10: Slippers Love.
- 34:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 34:22Speaker 10: So you know, we just jumped in and we got
- 34:24Speaker 10: into it and uh, just roll with the punches, you know.
- 34:28Speaker 10: So one time we were about to close the deal,
- 34:32Speaker 10: right and he said, hey, I'm staying late because you
- 34:36Speaker 10: know I wasn't really there yet. I'm staying late. I'm
- 34:42Speaker 10: skinning a coyote and I said, hold on, I'm going
- 34:44Speaker 10: there and let me do it. So I got just
- 34:48Speaker 10: show up in the evening and started skinning a coyote.
- 34:51Speaker 10: You know, he was kind of showing me around. So
- 34:54Speaker 10: that's kind of my first tryad. Actually, Yeah, do you
- 34:58Speaker 10: know people.
- 35:00Speaker 1: How many like what what what is this? Like bischofs
- 35:02Speaker 1: at the time, what was the scale of the business?
- 35:06Speaker 1: I mean employee wise, yeah, or just whatever you're you're
- 35:09Speaker 1: cranking out? What kind of work?
- 35:10Speaker 11: And I mean it's hard to say because it just
- 35:13Speaker 11: depends on the size of the project. So sometimes it'll
- 35:15Speaker 11: be like a big movie project and they want like
- 35:17Speaker 11: an animatoric cow that's laying outside with a lot of
- 35:20Speaker 11: servos and stuff going on.
- 35:22Speaker 5: So that's what servos and just electronic.
- 35:25Speaker 11: Yeah, so it'll be like a you know, RV whatever
- 35:28Speaker 11: those little letters and then so that project takes a
- 35:32Speaker 11: lot more time, you know what I mean. So it
- 35:33Speaker 11: just depends, and we're doing a lot of things at
- 35:36Speaker 11: the same time. So you'll see amount being done, pet
- 35:42Speaker 11: being finished, You'll see.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Like a hunting a mount being done, Yeah, pet.
- 35:47Speaker 11: Being finished, a fake life sized bear that's ten foot
- 35:51Speaker 11: you know, being fabricated for something where they don't want
- 35:53Speaker 11: to use real fur whatever is you know, So, like
- 35:56Speaker 11: we have a bunch of different projects going on at
- 35:58Speaker 11: the same time.
- 36:00Speaker 1: In a studio.
- 36:01Speaker 11: In studio, yeah, yeah, exactly, but how many people were
- 36:04Speaker 11: working there depends on project. Normally bring them in depending
- 36:08Speaker 11: on what's going on. Yeah, so on average, like six
- 36:11Speaker 11: six is kind of like the are straightforward number, but
- 36:13Speaker 11: then we bring in subcontractors. On electronics, there's phenomenal sculptors Jesse.
- 36:19Speaker 5: We got a lot of people who are just.
- 36:21Speaker 6: Great makers and things.
- 36:22Speaker 10: It depends on how big the project and how our
- 36:26Speaker 10: time frame. So sometimes you know, the studios the movies
- 36:30Speaker 10: are always like can you do you know, can you
- 36:34Speaker 10: have it by Friday?
- 36:35Speaker 1: And it's like sure, his wife bar.
- 36:41Speaker 8: Did you guys have like other than music? Did you
- 36:44Speaker 8: did you work in like another? I mean did you
- 36:47Speaker 8: were you in like a physical did you sculptor or
- 36:51Speaker 8: painting or drawing or did you have a mechanical background.
- 36:54Speaker 10: I have a mechanical background, Okay, yeah, yeah, So I
- 36:57Speaker 10: used to I used to have a smoke check station
- 37:00Speaker 10: in California. We do, you know, emission inspections for vehicles
- 37:04Speaker 10: so they don't pollute. So I had a license I
- 37:07Speaker 10: was a technician, you know, so I was handy and
- 37:12Speaker 10: I did I did go to school for the electronics
- 37:15Speaker 10: you know, like low voltage stuff, so that kind of
- 37:17Speaker 10: came in handy when it came down to U servos
- 37:21Speaker 10: and mechanical stuff and electronics stuff.
- 37:24Speaker 12: So the average day, you guys could be mounting a
- 37:28Speaker 12: buck from some joe blow that brought a buck in
- 37:32Speaker 12: that killed one hunting to like making stuff for movies.
- 37:35Speaker 10: Yeah, sometimes he's working on a on a you know,
- 37:38Speaker 10: on that or a taxi in peace, and I'll be
- 37:41Speaker 10: working on a on a structure for a for a
- 37:44Speaker 10: dead dog or something that they're going to need, you know,
- 37:46Speaker 10: like like so and then we do uh he does
- 37:52Speaker 10: the final details. I'll get it ready for you know,
- 37:55Speaker 10: just for the final painting and rushing and details.
- 37:59Speaker 6: So we kind of like switch over.
- 38:01Speaker 5: It like yeah, so we got to see I mean
- 38:04Speaker 5: like he could.
- 38:05Speaker 11: Well, he does all the other stuff, you know, a
- 38:06Speaker 11: lot of the that kind of stuff I do more
- 38:08Speaker 11: than I do, like the finish worth, the airbrush and
- 38:10Speaker 11: all that kind of stuff.
- 38:11Speaker 1: But I don't want to get a job down there man.
- 38:15Speaker 4: Internship for a while.
- 38:17Speaker 10: Yeah, it's interesting, I mean it's it's challenging because every time,
- 38:20Speaker 10: you know, you gotta we start from scratch and we
- 38:23Speaker 10: gotta figure out you know, every time it's a little
- 38:26Speaker 10: different because they always want some different you know. It's sure,
- 38:30Speaker 10: it's rare when we do like the same thing, you know,
- 38:33Speaker 10: like the same uh kind of prop So they always
- 38:37Speaker 10: want something.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Yeah, let's back up to music for one sec. So
- 38:46Speaker 1: the Blizzard of Oz just died, you guys, Yes, Like,
- 38:50Speaker 1: so if I just give me thumbs up, thumbs down,
- 38:53Speaker 1: war Pigs, yeah good, Crazy Train.
- 38:59Speaker 10: Yeah really good.
- 39:01Speaker 8: Let the record show that to both of those questions
- 39:04Speaker 8: they responded to.
- 39:05Speaker 1: The affirmative with war Pigs was like a tentative. It
- 39:08Speaker 1: was like they thought about it. But Crazy Train was like, yeah,
- 39:11Speaker 1: that was a no brainer. Yeah, war Pisa, let me
- 39:14Speaker 1: hate with this one. Him doing all them stupid reality shows.
- 39:19Speaker 1: They didn't thumb It felt like a thumb down.
- 39:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll go between.
- 39:24Speaker 1: You don't want to speak.
- 39:27Speaker 6: Somewhat entertaining, but.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Yeah, Osborne's is very entertaining.
- 39:30Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure.
- 39:31Speaker 1: I never watched it. I could tell you a long
- 39:35Speaker 1: fifteen minute story about Crazy Train that involved me and
- 39:38Speaker 1: Craig Kemp from high school, but I'm not gonna just
- 39:45Speaker 1: want more. It'll be like an appendix, can we do?
- 39:47Speaker 1: We should start doing appendixes on the.
- 39:49Speaker 7: Show post credits scenes.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Yeah, like an appendix to the show. You do the
- 39:55Speaker 1: parts you couldn't fit in it? Yeah? How does the
- 39:58Speaker 1: how does the movie trust me? I want I want
- 40:01Speaker 1: to get to like just the emotional aspects of the
- 40:03Speaker 1: pet trade, but or the pet business. But like, how
- 40:08Speaker 1: does movie business come to you? Do you? I mean,
- 40:11Speaker 1: like like who who comes to you? Is it an agent?
- 40:15Speaker 1: Is it a director? Like like how do they explain
- 40:17Speaker 1: their vision?
- 40:18Speaker 11: I mean it's they just everybody reaches out, whether it's
- 40:22Speaker 11: prop master, whether it's product. You know, anybody in the
- 40:24Speaker 11: production will reach out. I mean at this point, I
- 40:26Speaker 11: think it's established enough. I mean even long before we
- 40:29Speaker 11: were there, well Gary, Mary were, they're the previous owners
- 40:34Speaker 11: that they just give us a call. Literally, it's just
- 40:36Speaker 11: we pick up the phone, Bishops and they'll be like, hey,
- 40:39Speaker 11: we're working on the show. We need a fake pig.
- 40:42Speaker 11: Someone's got to stab it. There's got to be blood
- 40:43Speaker 11: coming out the other side. We gotta drag it, make
- 40:46Speaker 11: it flexible, make it heavy.
- 40:48Speaker 5: The actor, does you know what I mean?
- 40:49Speaker 11: And then and then they'll be like, but we need
- 40:51Speaker 11: it in two weeks, and then you gotta you know,
- 40:57Speaker 11: you gotta figure it out.
- 40:58Speaker 10: And then we tell them, yeah, we need at least
- 41:00Speaker 10: two weeks, and then they're they're still working on it.
- 41:02Speaker 10: And then five days go by and they give us
- 41:05Speaker 10: a green light. So for the same day, Well, they
- 41:10Speaker 10: go back and forth and figuring things out.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Yeah, are you able to like, can you name some
- 41:15Speaker 1: films that people might have seen some of your stuff in?
- 41:18Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure. We did West Road, We worked on
- 41:20Speaker 5: land Man.
- 41:21Speaker 11: Yeah, let's let's done a lot of Yellowstone stuff, The Night,
- 41:24Speaker 11: all the nineteen twenty three, A lot of the Tailers
- 41:26Speaker 11: and stuff we definitely worked on.
- 41:29Speaker 5: I was just in what the snakes for? I forgot.
- 41:33Speaker 11: I was just I mean, the thing is, by the
- 41:34Speaker 11: time the shows come out, I don't even know what
- 41:36Speaker 11: it was for.
- 41:37Speaker 10: Yeah. Sometimes we don't even know they showed. We just
- 41:41Speaker 10: have the production company name and we don't know.
- 41:45Speaker 1: You never you don't like follow along? No, I mean
- 41:48Speaker 1: out of your life? Are you never watching the show
- 41:50Speaker 1: and you're like.
- 41:50Speaker 10: Oh, yeah, that's what we find out. We be watching
- 41:54Speaker 10: some Netflix and oh, ship, that's that's you know, that's.
- 41:57Speaker 4: All blood comes out of that pig going left to right.
- 42:01Speaker 5: That's it.
- 42:03Speaker 1: So do you often because of the because of the
- 42:06Speaker 1: rules in filmmaking. And I know it's not a hard
- 42:10Speaker 1: and fast rule, but there's like there are way you know,
- 42:15Speaker 1: when you started seeing once upon a time, you start
- 42:17Speaker 1: seeing like no animals are harmed in the making the movie.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Does that really? Like how does that fit into your work?
- 42:25Speaker 1: Meaning if you have an old specimen it was already
- 42:30Speaker 1: dead for another reason, are you able to use it
- 42:32Speaker 1: or does everything have to be synthetic? No?
- 42:34Speaker 5: No, So yeah, it's just pretty much you didn't kill
- 42:37Speaker 5: it for the purpose of the film.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 42:39Speaker 11: So if we had an old hide for example, like
- 42:41Speaker 11: even we've had donated highs from like the World Conservation Center,
- 42:45Speaker 11: say for example, when they naturally pass, they'll you know,
- 42:47Speaker 11: they'll like you guys can process because otherwise we're just
- 42:49Speaker 11: gonna do a commute vibration. Ye, So we'll say the
- 42:52Speaker 11: hide and we can use that hide. And it's not
- 42:55Speaker 11: you know, we didn't kill it for the purpose in
- 42:57Speaker 11: the film. We just had the hide.
- 42:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Like in a movie when they're eat a steak,
- 43:00Speaker 1: right exactly, they didn't go out and yeah, that.
- 43:08Speaker 5: Same.
- 43:13Speaker 1: So you guys don't like go get the go, get
- 43:15Speaker 1: the rifles and what's gonna happen? Hit me with the
- 43:20Speaker 1: hit me with the pig. One. Okay, so they want
- 43:22Speaker 1: there's a pig they need to pick. They want to pick. Oh,
- 43:25Speaker 1: I was just watching the other It was a It
- 43:28Speaker 1: was a Corsican movie. I can't remember the name of it. Anyways,
- 43:32Speaker 1: in it, they got a pig hanging there.
- 43:34Speaker 3: Okay, I saw that.
- 43:36Speaker 2: Is it like a gangster like it's like the Fathers.
- 43:40Speaker 2: The father is involved in like like local mafia and
- 43:44Speaker 2: then it's like.
- 43:44Speaker 1: The corse Can Mob.
- 43:46Speaker 3: I forget the name of that film.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Either way, In it, they got to pick. They show up,
- 43:52Speaker 1: there's a pig in the truck. Pretty soon the pig's
- 43:53Speaker 1: hanging there. So you get a call about a pig, like,
- 43:58Speaker 1: let me just let me give you a fake exam
- 44:02Speaker 1: because you already brought up the pig. Let me bring
- 44:04Speaker 1: up one. Like I say, I'm doing a movie. A
- 44:07Speaker 1: guy the protagonist hits a deer at night with his
- 44:11Speaker 1: car and it's a key part of the movie that
- 44:13Speaker 1: he hits a deer at night. So when you a deer.
- 44:16Speaker 1: We need a he needs to hit it. It needs
- 44:18Speaker 1: to be that there it is on the road. There's
- 44:22Speaker 1: gonna be quite a bit of focus on the deer
- 44:24Speaker 1: because of the plot. How would you where do you start? Like,
- 44:28Speaker 1: how would you think about that problem?
- 44:30Speaker 11: I mean that's probably an easier one because there's a
- 44:32Speaker 11: lot of deer hides we have. Yeah, I mean, yeah,
- 44:35Speaker 11: I mean it just truthfully, I mean, it's not something
- 44:37Speaker 11: super exotic that you're looking for, you know, and then
- 44:40Speaker 11: we just see the hide, see what they want if
- 44:42Speaker 11: they needed to move or be flexible.
- 44:44Speaker 10: So we'll probably start with two of them for for
- 44:47Speaker 10: the for the purpose of you know, you're gonna shoot it,
- 44:50Speaker 10: you get a frame when when he's gonna get hit
- 44:52Speaker 10: by the car.
- 44:54Speaker 12: Right, That's what I was gonna ask, Like in a
- 44:56Speaker 12: scene like that where there's like a standing deer, a
- 44:59Speaker 12: deer like flying through deer, and then like a dead deer.
- 45:01Speaker 1: So that we would probably multiple deer.
- 45:03Speaker 6: Yeah, there's there's multiple deer.
- 45:05Speaker 10: See if you're going to get out of the car
- 45:07Speaker 10: and then drag it somewhere, and obviously it has to
- 45:09Speaker 10: be flappy, kind of freshly dead killed, you know whatever,
- 45:13Speaker 10: So you need a flappy one, so you would need
- 45:15Speaker 10: a couple of them, at least two of them.
- 45:17Speaker 1: And when you're making it look like obviously you got
- 45:20Speaker 1: to make it look banged up.
- 45:21Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure, you got to do that. Blood, the guts,
- 45:24Speaker 5: the whole.
- 45:24Speaker 11: We do like silicone, so we'll make MOLDI wile scold
- 45:27Speaker 11: pieces and then lay silicone paint that up. Then you
- 45:32Speaker 11: can put blood over that and then it just looks
- 45:34Speaker 11: gruesome when you when you go up to it, you know.
- 45:36Speaker 2: When it's floppy, what are you stuffing it with? Well,
- 45:40Speaker 2: so we is that a trade secret.
- 45:42Speaker 10: It's kind of a secret, but we try to keep it,
- 45:47Speaker 10: you know, the structure or the anatomy as close as possible.
- 45:50Speaker 10: So that's kind of we learned that, yeah, you know
- 45:53Speaker 10: through a lot of the ones that weren't so good.
- 45:59Speaker 10: So we learn that we we need to have the
- 46:02Speaker 10: anatomy kind of you know, certain parts need to be
- 46:06Speaker 10: like really more structure, structure firm than than Yeah, it's interesting.
- 46:11Speaker 5: It's kind of dips in the shoulders.
- 46:13Speaker 6: Yeah, and they head obviously hot.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Like a new kind of a new kind of mount
- 46:18Speaker 2: I know. John Hayes does like soft coyotes, and we
- 46:21Speaker 2: have a soft mom can.
- 46:23Speaker 7: But you want right he does.
- 46:26Speaker 3: Yeah, but I'm just wondering, like, you know, who knows?
- 46:30Speaker 2: Maybe you want a different kind of you want to
- 46:32Speaker 2: floppy floppy. I don't know Roan at home that you've
- 46:36Speaker 2: just gotten Tanzania.
- 46:38Speaker 5: Sure.
- 46:39Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 46:40Speaker 1: Oh, by the way, I know a guy. I know
- 46:42Speaker 1: a guy that has a full sable and a full
- 46:46Speaker 1: rone hide. Okay, so if you get a movie call, oh,
- 46:50Speaker 1: definitely you get a movie call, come.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Talks, and he might be willing to trade them for
- 46:55Speaker 4: a mesh backer.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Okay, okay, I mean like for ationally done, fleshed and
- 47:01Speaker 1: salted everything down to the nut sack. Wow, ready to go,
- 47:06Speaker 1: No salt, just keep me in mind. So let's say
- 47:16Speaker 1: we do this deer that we're gonna do this deer
- 47:17Speaker 1: thing as I described, And I don't want to pry,
- 47:21Speaker 1: but I'm like, hey, what, uh what should I budget
- 47:26Speaker 1: for this? Now? Don't don't just like like, are we talking?
- 47:30Speaker 1: I don't want to pry. Let's put this way.
- 47:36Speaker 3: Let's put this one talk about in the number of figures.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Yeah, let's put this way. Yeah, I go and say, hey,
- 47:43Speaker 1: I just killed a nice buck. I want a full
- 47:45Speaker 1: body a mount of my buck to display in my house,
- 47:48Speaker 1: and I wanted to look like the second before I
- 47:50Speaker 1: shot it live and well beautiful. And then I come
- 47:57Speaker 1: with the same deer and I say, hey, I want
- 47:59Speaker 1: to look like I just ran it over? But bad?
- 48:04Speaker 1: Which of these projects is more expensive?
- 48:07Speaker 11: As long as you bring it and you give us
- 48:09Speaker 11: a good amount of time, they would both be you know,
- 48:12Speaker 11: I mean, it'd be cheaper to get you a busted
- 48:14Speaker 11: up looking thing.
- 48:14Speaker 1: It is you got to make all the latex.
- 48:19Speaker 11: But we already have all the molds and everything for it,
- 48:21Speaker 11: so we youat know, I mean, and we do it
- 48:23Speaker 11: so often that it's just like.
- 48:26Speaker 8: Yeah, and you're probably not doing a ton of detail
- 48:29Speaker 8: work with something like that.
- 48:32Speaker 5: We just throw dirt on it. If you want it
- 48:34Speaker 5: really much.
- 48:38Speaker 1: Then you built when they read their does it item
- 48:42Speaker 1: for dirt?
- 48:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:46Speaker 1: So uh, there's that business which is very different. You
- 48:51Speaker 1: had traditional taxidermy, which people can't understand that how in
- 48:56Speaker 1: the world, like in Bischoff's history, how did how did
- 49:01Speaker 1: the pet?
- 49:05Speaker 3: You can continue?
- 49:06Speaker 1: Yeah, in company history?
- 49:08Speaker 5: Mm hmm.
- 49:11Speaker 1: What was the moment that someone said, like we're laughing
- 49:14Speaker 1: about Cranny asked John Hayes, did you pet John Hayes says, no,
- 49:17Speaker 1: what was the moment in Bischoff history? What Okay, tell
- 49:21Speaker 1: me the name of the animal.
- 49:23Speaker 5: It's not called it's Bishops.
- 49:25Speaker 11: Yeahs is the name of the company and the animal
- 49:27Speaker 11: kingdom is just like the slogan that goes with I got.
- 49:30Speaker 1: At what point in Bischoff history was it? The answer
- 49:35Speaker 1: is yes.
- 49:36Speaker 11: Well I think Roy Rogers trigger was was done at
- 49:41Speaker 11: our shop?
- 49:42Speaker 5: Really yeah, I mean that was a pet and.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Roy Rogers horse.
- 49:46Speaker 11: Yeah, Everett mounted it. Yeah, at our shop many years ago.
- 49:52Speaker 1: My god, that is incredible.
- 49:58Speaker 5: And also a buck on the yeah as well.
- 50:04Speaker 4: I mean if you walked up on that, I'd kick it.
- 50:07Speaker 4: You'd have no, it's like wake you would have.
- 50:11Speaker 8: Let let the record show that there's now a dog,
- 50:14Speaker 8: a stuffed dog?
- 50:16Speaker 1: Is that?
- 50:17Speaker 10: Aug, it's a frenchie.
- 50:19Speaker 8: There's a there's a stuffed frenchie on the table that
- 50:23Speaker 8: is uh sleeping.
- 50:26Speaker 1: And it looks and very real.
- 50:27Speaker 8: Yeah, it's got wrinkles. And you got a picture of
- 50:30Speaker 8: me sitting here, Randal. Yeah, who's hard?
- 50:34Speaker 1: Is this?
- 50:35Speaker 5: That's a client center? Actually?
- 50:38Speaker 7: Do that's that?
- 50:38Speaker 1: Dog's hard? He wanted his dog's heart.
- 50:41Speaker 11: Yeah, smile, you're saying that so how do you how
- 50:47Speaker 11: do you do that is a freeze drivers.
- 50:50Speaker 4: I had a question about that.
- 50:51Speaker 1: I had a lot of questions drying that up and eat.
- 50:53Speaker 5: It technically, I mean, not what we injected with.
- 51:00Speaker 8: The strange part about the heart to me is like
- 51:03Speaker 8: if I took my dog to you and said I
- 51:05Speaker 8: want my heart, and obviously we can't.
- 51:08Speaker 4: You know, these are your clients that we don't. But
- 51:10Speaker 4: like when they get it back to like, oh, I've
- 51:12Speaker 4: never seen that before.
- 51:14Speaker 1: You know, I've seen my heart. You ever think about that?
- 51:19Speaker 1: You never get a good look at your own heart.
- 51:20Speaker 10: Yeah, well they've seen it done. You know, they've seen
- 51:24Speaker 10: the sample, so they get a good idea of how
- 51:27Speaker 10: what they're getting.
- 51:28Speaker 4: So yeah, that.
- 51:30Speaker 7: Is I could see Tracker, oh yeah, getting done like that.
- 51:33Speaker 1: And it wouldn't be that different than the way it
- 51:35Speaker 1: is now. Yeah, it just kind of later.
- 51:37Speaker 8: I mean, yeah, I was gonna say, I spend when
- 51:41Speaker 8: I'm at home, I spend ninety five percent of my
- 51:43Speaker 8: time around sleeping dogs, and.
- 51:46Speaker 1: You can spend and I.
- 51:50Speaker 8: Could never tell you that that wasn't a live dog.
- 51:53Speaker 8: Is there's nothing bit of.
- 51:54Speaker 1: Work that's freeze dried.
- 51:57Speaker 11: Yeah, it's a it's a hybrid. It's a yeah, yeah,
- 52:01Speaker 11: we do a little bit of everything. It's like it's
- 52:03Speaker 11: like a weird yeah.
- 52:07Speaker 1: So what wow?
- 52:10Speaker 8: What is the freeze like? Could you explain the freeze
- 52:13Speaker 8: drying process? I mean, I think most people are familiar
- 52:16Speaker 8: with like standard tax dermoy. You're you're tanning the hide,
- 52:20Speaker 8: you're putting it over a mold. Then you're you know,
- 52:22Speaker 8: molding and painting and.
- 52:25Speaker 4: Stuff like that. But what is the freeze dry product? Like,
- 52:28Speaker 4: you start with a dead dog, what do you do?
- 52:31Speaker 6: So we prep it?
- 52:32Speaker 10: Obviously we got to do some skinning in our case,
- 52:36Speaker 10: you know, all the organs and fatty teach who has
- 52:41Speaker 10: to be removed because those things don't freeze right well
- 52:44Speaker 10: except you know obviously if you do it simply. But
- 52:50Speaker 10: so we prep him. We we actually cast mold out
- 52:55Speaker 10: of their body so we.
- 52:56Speaker 6: Have the same the perfect same body.
- 53:00Speaker 1: So that's how you get to so you know where
- 53:02Speaker 1: to end up.
- 53:04Speaker 10: Yeah, so, uh, but the head, the skull is still
- 53:08Speaker 10: it's all there is intact, you know, the legs, all
- 53:12Speaker 10: the skeleton structure.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Like that leg or freeze dry good because there's just
- 53:16Speaker 1: nothing to.
- 53:17Speaker 11: It, right, It's just fats and oils is what makes
- 53:19Speaker 11: it difficult in the freeze dryer, so you got to
- 53:20Speaker 11: get rid of it pretty much. Fats and oils just
- 53:22Speaker 11: don't freeze dry. Okay, Yeah, that's the biggest thing. And
- 53:25Speaker 11: then we sometimes we'll three D scan and then digitally print,
- 53:29Speaker 11: you know what I mean, some of the body portions
- 53:31Speaker 11: and stuff like that, because we were big on three
- 53:34Speaker 11: D printers and scanners, because we've got quite a field
- 53:35Speaker 11: them just for the film industry.
- 53:37Speaker 1: Huh.
- 53:38Speaker 11: If they want like a quick paw that matches something,
- 53:41Speaker 11: we can three.
- 53:42Speaker 5: D printed, you know what I mean and then figure
- 53:45Speaker 5: that out.
- 53:45Speaker 11: So we've messed a lot of different you know, I
- 53:48Speaker 11: mean industries into the pets. Yeah, who's uh, whose dog
- 53:53Speaker 11: is this? This is? This is I don't know if
- 53:56Speaker 11: he wants to be named, but it's a it's a
- 53:58Speaker 11: class you know it's here.
- 53:59Speaker 5: Yeah, yea, yeah, that's incredible.
- 54:03Speaker 4: Yeah, it really, it really is.
- 54:07Speaker 1: Dude. That dog looks like it's laying there sleeping.
- 54:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm getting all emotion.
- 54:12Speaker 5: Yeah, think of all the moments.
- 54:14Speaker 3: Yeah, think about your own.
- 54:15Speaker 1: Time, thinking about when he's alive. Doesn't look like that?
- 54:19Speaker 1: How big of a dog?
- 54:20Speaker 2: Like?
- 54:20Speaker 1: Does the size matter?
- 54:22Speaker 10: That's obviously bigger dogs hits a lot more work and
- 54:24Speaker 10: it takes a lot lower in the the actual freeze Riyo.
- 54:27Speaker 1: You should see in dogs.
- 54:28Speaker 3: Yeah, got it?
- 54:29Speaker 2: Ye, great, great Dane and my new Finland is upstairs.
- 54:33Speaker 5: So how how many pounds?
- 54:35Speaker 2: But one, one, twenty and one thirty something, so.
- 54:40Speaker 4: He's calculating how much times.
- 54:44Speaker 5: We just got one working up an invoice.
- 54:46Speaker 11: Yeah, someone came in from the East coast and it
- 54:49Speaker 11: was about one hundred and sixty pounds.
- 54:51Speaker 10: Yeah, so that's the biggest so far.
- 54:55Speaker 1: You want frozen probably, yeah, for sure.
- 54:58Speaker 11: Yeah, Yeah, And that's the biggest thing is people sometimes yeah,
- 55:01Speaker 11: I mean they're not It's not like a hunter who
- 55:03Speaker 11: knows what they're doing the prep work for, so they
- 55:06Speaker 11: don't know to freeze. So you know there's times where
- 55:09Speaker 11: like they've you know, your morning.
- 55:11Speaker 10: Morning and they have them out for twenty four hours.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Or hair starts to slip, yeah late.
- 55:19Speaker 11: Text Yeah, and age, you know, honestly, age, sometimes they
- 55:23Speaker 11: lose a lot of weight.
- 55:24Speaker 5: And we got to be honest with you.
- 55:26Speaker 11: If you bring in a seventeen year old dog who
- 55:29Speaker 11: lost X amount of pounds and you're like, and you
- 55:31Speaker 11: show me a photograph of when they were three four
- 55:33Speaker 11: years old. We can add a bit of weight, but
- 55:36Speaker 11: we got to be realistic about that.
- 55:38Speaker 1: Goes in Hollywood, that goes on all the time. Get it.
- 55:42Speaker 10: Try to make them look good.
- 55:44Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean if we had a band, this is
- 55:45Speaker 7: where they're.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Yeah, huh, all right, I don't even know where to begin.
- 55:57Speaker 3: That's just yeah, it's wild.
- 56:01Speaker 1: It looks great.
- 56:03Speaker 6: Ye.
- 56:04Speaker 1: Back when I was I don't know where. I don't
- 56:07Speaker 1: know where things stand in text durmy now. But when
- 56:11Speaker 1: I was younger, it would be like you just order
- 56:13Speaker 1: all these molds. I mean like let's say you let's
- 56:15Speaker 1: sa let's say you do white tail deer. Right, you
- 56:19Speaker 1: just order a mold right right. For the most part,
- 56:21Speaker 1: I mean, like for most work. Be that you go
- 56:24Speaker 1: on to tax dermy dot com and it's like head
- 56:28Speaker 1: to you know, shoulder mount looking right. But in your guys,
- 56:33Speaker 1: there's no.
- 56:35Speaker 5: Yeah, that's why you.
- 56:37Speaker 10: Get into it.
- 56:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 56:39Speaker 12: So there's no forms, no bulldog, no French bulldog, no
- 56:44Speaker 12: French bulldog, pounds sleeping.
- 56:50Speaker 4: The cute little used to do.
- 56:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:54Speaker 10: So that's where I think that's where the big difference is.
- 56:58Speaker 10: There's nothing pre made or or there's nothing we can
- 57:01Speaker 10: order that.
- 57:02Speaker 1: It's all from scratch.
- 57:03Speaker 6: It's all from scratch.
- 57:05Speaker 2: There's little heads on his little paw with a little
- 57:08Speaker 2: like it's like yeah, like.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Yeah, so it's the first is the first step. So
- 57:16Speaker 1: he he never got you never sent this to get tanned.
- 57:20Speaker 10: No, No, that's where the freeze dryer kind of takes over.
- 57:24Speaker 10: You know, the freeze drying kind of it's like the
- 57:26Speaker 10: tanning process, but it's it's uh, it's done by the
- 57:32Speaker 10: removing the moisture off and kind of it's pretty much
- 57:37Speaker 10: the same result. Yeah, I mean, obviously this is brittle,
- 57:41Speaker 10: you know, it's it's it's I mean, it's stiff.
- 57:44Speaker 1: Ye would you would you expect that this is this
- 57:47Speaker 1: is this will last?
- 57:49Speaker 11: Yeah, because we do a little bit of a weird
- 57:52Speaker 11: hybrid thing. We make sure that if you just put
- 57:55Speaker 11: this in a freeze dryer without doing kind of like
- 57:59Speaker 11: the hybrid thing that we do with it, it wouldn't last. Yeah,
- 58:02Speaker 11: because fats and oils just there, they're not going to
- 58:04Speaker 11: freeze dry.
- 58:05Speaker 5: It's in edeman. You'll two three years, you'll have slippage,
- 58:09Speaker 5: you'll have yeah.
- 58:12Speaker 2: But when you here's are those like the actual ears?
- 58:16Speaker 6: Yes?
- 58:16Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, No, inserting there. Yeah, okay, so when you thaw,
- 58:22Speaker 1: when you thaw an animal out, is it is the clock?
- 58:26Speaker 1: Like the clock's ticking.
- 58:27Speaker 5: Now right right? Yeah? Yep, mm hmmm.
- 58:30Speaker 1: That's so I'm just curious, like, without it, how are
- 58:34Speaker 1: you hustling so much to wind up with something so
- 58:37Speaker 1: realistic with like the proper folds in its neck and
- 58:39Speaker 1: all that. Like once you thought out, you got to
- 58:41Speaker 1: start working on it. I mean, yeah, so we you
- 58:44Speaker 1: have how many how many hours days till it's got
- 58:47Speaker 1: to be kind of like done.
- 58:49Speaker 10: So we probably we start working on let's say, start
- 58:51Speaker 10: on it today, and you get to a certain point
- 58:54Speaker 10: and then you put it back in the refrigerator. So
- 58:57Speaker 10: next day we pull it out, okay, and you continue
- 58:59Speaker 10: until probably two days.
- 59:02Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean you got to you gotta keep it cool,
- 59:04Speaker 11: you got to keep it frozen. So I mean, it's
- 59:06Speaker 11: not like you got to get it all done.
- 59:08Speaker 6: Now, not at one.
- 59:10Speaker 11: Yeah, like I could start on it, you know, have
- 59:12Speaker 11: it pretty much ready to go. Maybe I got the
- 59:15Speaker 11: mold and then I'm like, okay, wait, it's Friday, you know,
- 59:17Speaker 11: I want to go have a good week and whatever
- 59:18Speaker 11: it is popping in the freezer. Then maybe Sunday night,
- 59:22Speaker 11: come out, pull it over to the fridge by tomorrow morning,
- 59:25Speaker 11: Monday mornings, you know, thought out and then we can
- 59:28Speaker 11: go to the next step.
- 59:29Speaker 1: Yeah, how distraught are people when they bring you their pets?
- 59:35Speaker 10: Well, we get a variety of people. Some people are
- 59:38Speaker 10: just normal, you know, not too emotional. Some people are
- 59:42Speaker 10: really emotional. Sometimes even when they call we we you know,
- 59:46Speaker 10: we understand. So we try to be in and you know,
- 59:50Speaker 10: empathetic to their situation. And so that's kind of a
- 59:54Speaker 10: different Uh, it's like we're talking about going back from
- 1:00:00Speaker 10: year to a.
- 1:00:01Speaker 6: Pad to a fake.
- 1:00:03Speaker 10: So yeah, yeah, so you're on the phone with someone
- 1:00:07Speaker 10: that wants a snake for a show, and then the
- 1:00:11Speaker 10: next call is someone crying over the dog, you know.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: So it's it's a range of emotions.
- 1:00:17Speaker 10: It's a range of emotions. And also when they come in,
- 1:00:19Speaker 10: you know, we have people from the studios come in
- 1:00:21Speaker 10: checking hey and want when I look at your crows
- 1:00:25Speaker 10: and they're going and then we got someone bringing on
- 1:00:27Speaker 10: you know, their pets. It's it's it's a very contrasting.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: You know, different energy.
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: Different energy with different clients.
- 1:00:35Speaker 11: Yeah, so we made a little like there's like a
- 1:00:37Speaker 11: little side pet room, like almost like morning when you
- 1:00:40Speaker 11: bring pet in, you go to this private room and
- 1:00:42Speaker 11: you kind of you know, you can sit there and
- 1:00:43Speaker 11: take your time, just so it doesn't take away from
- 1:00:46Speaker 11: your experience. You know, I don't want a studio person
- 1:00:48Speaker 11: to come in and just like, hey man, how's you going?
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah?
- 1:00:56Speaker 7: Do you do you wash the hides on those dogs thorough?
- 1:00:59Speaker 12: A lot of If I did my dog, I'd want
- 1:01:01Speaker 12: to smell like my dog, like kind of half rocken.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Uh what this is? This is gonna be a tricky one,
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Like I don't want you guys to damage your business
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: or anything. There's got to be right, Like people are
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: gonna have expectations and then they're gonna come in, you know,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: and you gotta be like here it is, yeah, and
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: then they're gonna respond that seems to me.
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: Fraud.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: That seems to me. That's got to be a tricky moment.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: You gotta be having your fingers crossed. Well, they're gonna
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: be like, oh perfect and not some other emotion because
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: they're because again it's emotional.
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: It is it's different.
- 1:01:53Speaker 10: Well, so far we haven't had a experience, so we're
- 1:01:56Speaker 10: pretty confident. So now when people come in and pick
- 1:01:59Speaker 10: up their pets pretty confident, there be happy.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Oh dude, violin this dog, I'd be thrilled. Yes, I
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: don't know some bit slept like that, but I'd still.
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: Well, you take your if your pet sleeps a different way,
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: you you know, we just.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: Because people got pictures that are dogs.
- 1:02:16Speaker 11: Yeah, and I always say like one to three pictures.
- 1:02:19Speaker 11: Sometimes they'll send me like an album one thousand, So
- 1:02:23Speaker 11: which one do you want? YEA one for the body
- 1:02:27Speaker 11: poss Yeah, oneion if.
- 1:02:31Speaker 12: You guys did my dog would be super easy because
- 1:02:33Speaker 12: when my dog sleeps just looks dead anyway.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: So just be like, just make it look like a
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: dead dog.
- 1:02:41Speaker 7: Can we get it between As and Ray? Just for
- 1:02:43Speaker 7: like a really nice clean shot of it. We've gotten
- 1:02:45Speaker 7: some good shots, but not not the whole body or
- 1:02:47Speaker 7: anything like that.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: Just for the audience. It's okay to slide it. I
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: don't know if yeah one handles and yeah yeah oh
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: even the bottom show the bottom of that thing.
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: Yeah, wow, wow, wow damn because you can't run.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: How that dog looks great.
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: It's great, It's it's really kind of spooky.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: How that makes me want to get our dog stuff?
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:03:13Speaker 10: See that's the thing with people.
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: Killed.
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: Difference is you want to get them stuff today.
- 1:03:26Speaker 10: Yeah, so people, it's not for everyone. You know, some
- 1:03:30Speaker 10: people of course, you know, like they have a negative
- 1:03:33Speaker 10: reaction to the actual aspect.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Of you're dealing with the fraction.
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: Yes, and but people don't realize like when they see.
- 1:03:44Speaker 10: The final product, when the final outcome, it kind of
- 1:03:49Speaker 10: change their perspective on how to look at the actual
- 1:03:53Speaker 10: you know, ah process or the or the or the
- 1:03:58Speaker 10: just the thought of you know.
- 1:04:00Speaker 11: And then also we do have that we have a
- 1:04:02Speaker 11: bunch of other options, so like a common person will
- 1:04:05Speaker 11: come in. We have an acclamation machine for example, so
- 1:04:08Speaker 11: you can just do the ashes, and we have an
- 1:04:10Speaker 11: artist that can get you a custom portrait.
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: We can do the podcast.
- 1:04:13Speaker 11: So a lot of people go for like the generic
- 1:04:15Speaker 11: normal kind of preservations, and then some people do like
- 1:04:18Speaker 11: a partial preservice.
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: Some people just want to scull bronze.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: Did you just say a podcast?
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that's a podcast.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: Thought that's why. Yeah, yeah, oh, just like an imprint
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: for him exactly.
- 1:04:32Speaker 11: We do it like bronze, you know, podcasts or I mean,
- 1:04:35Speaker 11: and then some people want to scull, you know, they
- 1:04:37Speaker 11: want like a bronze skull. So we'll do that as well.
- 1:04:40Speaker 11: Really everybody has. I mean that's the way the heart
- 1:04:42Speaker 11: came about. One person asked for.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Like vincent price or something wanted that, like I.
- 1:04:49Speaker 11: Can't even remember who the first person, yeah it was,
- 1:04:51Speaker 11: but then it's it like somehow other people start to
- 1:04:54Speaker 11: know about it, and then we just said, well we
- 1:04:55Speaker 11: might as well.
- 1:04:56Speaker 6: Same thing with that what the pond remember someone?
- 1:04:59Speaker 10: Yeah, just you know, oh my god, I would just
- 1:05:02Speaker 10: love to get his spot, Like okay, well we'll do it.
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: Yeah, but unless it has that yeasty smell. Yes, I
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: mean for me dogs.
- 1:05:13Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm wondering about like me, because there are there
- 1:05:19Speaker 8: are certain animals I feel like out there, like wild animals,
- 1:05:22Speaker 8: game animals that when you taxidermy them, they don't ever
- 1:05:25Speaker 8: really have like the full magic. You know, they're dead,
- 1:05:30Speaker 8: yeah I know, but like this, like like if you
- 1:05:33Speaker 8: saw a mountain lion like that, or I'm sort of
- 1:05:36Speaker 8: wondering about like the bleed over between this freeze dry
- 1:05:39Speaker 8: technique and what we think of as traditional taxidermy.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Like why are people not doing well? I guess they
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: do because I remember I used to sell otters to
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: a guy that would freeze, dry them, and sell them
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: a long time ago.
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: That would be wild.
- 1:05:54Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean you can do can be I think
- 1:05:58Speaker 11: the biggest thing out. Yeah, some of the chambers, a
- 1:06:01Speaker 11: lot of the free drive chambers just aren't too huge,
- 1:06:03Speaker 11: so you got a size issue. And then also like
- 1:06:06Speaker 11: the amount of space that you do. You know, we
- 1:06:08Speaker 11: could fit fifteen of these these guys in one chamber.
- 1:06:11Speaker 11: If we fit in the mountain line, We're gonna charge
- 1:06:13Speaker 11: you a lot of money for that mountain line to
- 1:06:14Speaker 11: sit there four months in the freeze.
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: Driver could have done four of these guys, four of
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: these guys.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: Yeah, what takes this film up your real estate yet? Squirrel?
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: Yeah? Cool?
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: Yeah, we free drives.
- 1:06:25Speaker 11: I mean I think it would great, like if you
- 1:06:27Speaker 11: have like a carical cat or whatever, you know, like
- 1:06:29Speaker 11: I think, because you'd have the skeletal structure in there,
- 1:06:32Speaker 11: and I think that's what messes up those mounts a
- 1:06:34Speaker 11: lot of times.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: I got you.
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: So the forms are great, but not as good as nat.
- 1:06:37Speaker 10: So when you order the forums, they have no no detail.
- 1:06:40Speaker 10: They're just playing you know, from forms with no detail.
- 1:06:44Speaker 10: So that's why you don't you don't get the you know,
- 1:06:48Speaker 10: the ring called the expression on the that's.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: A really good point that like the the native structure,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: mean the skull, like the native structure is there, yes,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: and the pause like the structures there.
- 1:07:01Speaker 11: Yeah, exactly, you got all the skeletal structure, and same
- 1:07:03Speaker 11: thing with the faces.
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: I mean, the face is the core of the mount.
- 1:07:07Speaker 11: So if you were to do any kind of wildcat,
- 1:07:09Speaker 11: I mean, it's just it would make more sense to
- 1:07:11Speaker 11: have the natural skull and everything, the natural ears. I
- 1:07:14Speaker 11: mean I've done them traditionally, but it's just your sculpt
- 1:07:18Speaker 11: and now it's up to the sculptors, up to the artists,
- 1:07:21Speaker 11: and it's not up to the way he really was naturally.
- 1:07:24Speaker 7: So that dog's skull is in this mount right here,
- 1:07:27Speaker 7: right yes?
- 1:07:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: Yeah. Wow.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: Did you guys married? Yeah, we're both yeah married.
- 1:07:33Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: What do they think about your line of work?
- 1:07:35Speaker 10: Well, they love it. I mean they're okay with it.
- 1:07:39Speaker 10: I mean it's it's it's it's for us. For it's interesting,
- 1:07:45Speaker 10: you know, it's it's it's fascinating. It's fascinating. It's not
- 1:07:49Speaker 10: like even when people ask, oh, so what do you
- 1:07:51Speaker 10: guys do? What is you know, it's just interesting to
- 1:07:54Speaker 10: spark a conversation just on the fact that, yeah, it's
- 1:07:58Speaker 10: so random, you know, a lot out there.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: I'm still fascinated by how you guys took over the
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: business and even got into doing this at this level.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: You know, I mean, this is this, you know, this
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: looks incredible, amazing, and it seems like all the techniques
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: that you've developed to apply to this work is just
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: you know, it's not like you were, you know, apprenticing
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: for decades, you know.
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: And yeah, I think mind blow.
- 1:08:32Speaker 11: I think it's a lot of the just the random stuff,
- 1:08:34Speaker 11: like we're talking about that every day. And I think
- 1:08:36Speaker 11: the studio has pushed us a lot. Yeah, because we've
- 1:08:39Speaker 11: we've had to come up with so many ways like
- 1:08:41Speaker 11: how I mean there's times where we've sold a job
- 1:08:44Speaker 11: and like now, how.
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: Are we going to do it? Yeah?
- 1:08:47Speaker 11: They were on an elephant needed in this, you know
- 1:08:50Speaker 11: what I mean, Like whatever it is, I'm like, Okay,
- 1:08:52Speaker 11: it's going to take this long and make the mold.
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: We got to do the fiberglass.
- 1:08:55Speaker 10: We got it.
- 1:08:56Speaker 11: So I think all those freak out moments, let us
- 1:09:00Speaker 11: like piece it all together to be able to do something.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: Do you ever do work on on like time and material?
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Because you don't know what you're getting into.
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: We do, but we yeah, I mean we do time.
- 1:09:13Speaker 11: I mean we definitely we priced a lot of course
- 1:09:15Speaker 11: material time also just what we're getting out of the
- 1:09:18Speaker 11: way because a lot of the students, like I said, there,
- 1:09:20Speaker 11: it's all last minute stuff. So it's not it's not
- 1:09:23Speaker 11: like a hundred just drops off. Hey man, I'll pick
- 1:09:26Speaker 11: it up in six months, No big deal if you
- 1:09:28Speaker 11: go seven months. Just make sure it looks great. Whereas
- 1:09:31Speaker 11: the studio is like, hey, can I get progress pictures?
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:09:35Speaker 11: I get it, but like right now, I don't want
- 1:09:37Speaker 11: to send you a photograph of a phone form.
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: Yeah, nothing like that it's supposed to be.
- 1:09:43Speaker 10: And then they're going to try to change the you know,
- 1:09:45Speaker 10: the oh my god I wanted you know, and they're
- 1:09:47Speaker 10: gonna kind of make changes while winning that we're in
- 1:09:51Speaker 10: the middle of the process.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: And then what I meant by time materials like in
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: the trades, like when I work for my buddy Ronnie,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: we do jobs that we're a bid, right, You're like,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: it'll it'll be this and if we lose money or
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: make money, that's the price. Or some things that were
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: more open ended, it'd be like we're gonna work on
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: the project at blank dollars an hour plus our materials,
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: because we don't know what we're getting into, so you
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: normally come back with a it'll be this yes, and
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: then you lose money or make money on how well
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: you can fulfill. Yeah.
- 1:10:27Speaker 11: I mean, at this point, I think we got a
- 1:10:28Speaker 11: good idea of where it's going to land. So if
- 1:10:30Speaker 11: we say, oh, it's gonna be whatever, sixty hundred, they'll
- 1:10:33Speaker 11: be like, okay, well yeah, and we kind of know
- 1:10:35Speaker 11: we're you know, what we're making on it with how
- 1:10:38Speaker 11: much the latex is, the phone is the whether we're
- 1:10:41Speaker 11: using natural hide or fil furs or whatever.
- 1:10:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:10:47Speaker 7: I was gonna ask what other pets of you guys
- 1:10:50Speaker 7: done other than dogs.
- 1:10:52Speaker 6: Well, we do cats, hamstairs, rabbits. Rabbits beat goldfish, dragons.
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: We didn't do a goldfish once it was in the article.
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: I remember that.
- 1:11:09Speaker 11: Hamsters, Yeah, hamsters, little rats, little baby rats like there's
- 1:11:14Speaker 11: you know, sometimes the kid will have rat on naturally
- 1:11:16Speaker 11: pass and then be like, oh my god, I love
- 1:11:18Speaker 11: this and it will come in and we'll do it
- 1:11:21Speaker 11: if that's what you want.
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: I mean, Hollywood families, keep keep you.
- 1:11:27Speaker 5: Pet Wallaby pat horses.
- 1:11:30Speaker 11: We've done horses of course, Yeah, but now horses are
- 1:11:34Speaker 11: done traditionally because it's just you don't want to freeze drive.
- 1:11:38Speaker 10: Yeah, there's no, there's no.
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: You guys did Roy Rot Your company did Everett.
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: He was a tax rooms at the time he did it.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: You guys weren't even born yet.
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: He was amazing.
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah, I think still out of you seum somewhere right.
- 1:11:53Speaker 11: They sold in an auction. It's I think somewhere in
- 1:11:56Speaker 11: the Midwest now. I think it's sold for like a
- 1:11:58Speaker 11: quarter of a million.
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: Something. Have you ever done a pet cow?
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: We did it. Yeah, we do that every once in
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: a while. We do the headed cat.
- 1:12:07Speaker 11: Yeah, that's a two headed cat that was natural, that
- 1:12:09Speaker 11: was still born or whatever it was.
- 1:12:10Speaker 5: We did that for somebody as well.
- 1:12:12Speaker 11: A lot of longhorn, you know what I mean, and
- 1:12:14Speaker 11: just your natural like you know, they'll keep the hide
- 1:12:17Speaker 11: and then we'll just do the head mount.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: Well. How many pieces are coming out of your.
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: Studio every year? I don't know.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Is there something out the door every day?
- 1:12:25Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely. Yeah.
- 1:12:27Speaker 11: Pets, oh my pets. And I think we have rentals too,
- 1:12:32Speaker 11: so we have. So that's another weird thing. Yeah, so
- 1:12:35Speaker 11: somebody will come in and then we have a big
- 1:12:36Speaker 11: short showroom with everything you can think of. So we
- 1:12:40Speaker 11: have a bunch of fake stuff, we have a bunch
- 1:12:41Speaker 11: of real stuff. So you can come in and you'll
- 1:12:44Speaker 11: find like a line pole that's hinged where it's I'll swipe.
- 1:12:47Speaker 11: So if you're working on a commercial for whatever and
- 1:12:49Speaker 11: you need that, it'll just be like, oh, perfect, that's
- 1:12:51Speaker 11: what I want. Boom, pick it up. We'll ring you up,
- 1:12:54Speaker 11: you'll bring it back. It's a weak rental back off,
- 1:12:58Speaker 11: that's all it is.
- 1:13:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: How many employees you got now it's like six seven
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: seven okay, yeah.
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: And then a list of subcontractors.
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: Yes, that just seems incredible.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: Explain the subcontractor thing. There's like guys out there to
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: have these particular skill sets, and what are they doing
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: when they're not doing the work for you?
- 1:13:20Speaker 10: Well, they work for other studios, so they're like constantly
- 1:13:25Speaker 10: either you know, one studio to another.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: And that doesn't cause problems for you.
- 1:13:32Speaker 6: Well no, not really, because we have you know what,
- 1:13:36Speaker 6: we have a.
- 1:13:39Speaker 10: List of many so if one's not available, we go
- 1:13:42Speaker 10: to the next one and eventually things will work out.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: Give give me an example, of give me, give me example,
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: give me example of a guy that's not on pay,
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: not on staff, who you call yeah for special assignments,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: like well, I don't understand.
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:13:58Speaker 11: So like David Gross, phenomenal sculptor. Okay, right, so he
- 1:14:02Speaker 11: he will. I think he was the one who sculpted
- 1:14:05Speaker 11: I think the snakes for Yeah, I think it was
- 1:14:08Speaker 11: yeah for what for Landman? So he digitally sculpted the snake,
- 1:14:13Speaker 11: like the whole snake was digitally sculpted. He sent us
- 1:14:16Speaker 11: the file, so he worked from home on that thing
- 1:14:18Speaker 11: on the computer. He digital sculpt the whole thing. To
- 1:14:20Speaker 11: our measurements, to everything. We went back and forth. He
- 1:14:23Speaker 11: sent us a file. We three D printed the file,
- 1:14:26Speaker 11: made a mold out of it, silicone casted the snakes
- 1:14:29Speaker 11: that they're flexible, but wiring or whatever they wanted to
- 1:14:31Speaker 11: do in them. And he'll float around. So then he'll
- 1:14:34Speaker 11: just he'll do projects for another studio. But these are
- 1:14:36Speaker 11: fect studios that he mostly works with, Okay, so it's
- 1:14:39Speaker 11: like Hollywood studios where they'll call him and now he's
- 1:14:41Speaker 11: got a sculpt for the new whatever film that's coming out,
- 1:14:46Speaker 11: you know. So he just floats around. So for us
- 1:14:48Speaker 11: it's not like, oh, they're taking our sculptor.
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: It's no. I mean, everybody can do what you do.
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: You know, that's cool.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: I didn't get to that episode yet and land Man,
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: I just started watching it.
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: So Philly Bob Thornton.
- 1:14:59Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I remember those snakes.
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: I watched that one. You guys ever do a black mamba?
- 1:15:08Speaker 5: Black mom?
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: Here's and kill Bill. There's a black mamba in there,
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: but it's alive. But then there's like, obviously some of
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: you guys work is not your work, but someone's work
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: is in there.
- 1:15:18Speaker 11: Might have been Gary at the time. Yeah, yeah, I'm
- 1:15:21Speaker 11: not sure.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: I have to ask you about cloning, which I saw
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: on your website it says inquire about cloning.
- 1:15:31Speaker 6: Yeah, so.
- 1:15:33Speaker 10: We don't obviously we don't do that in house. But
- 1:15:36Speaker 10: there there's that company in Texas. It's called vi Agen.
- 1:15:39Speaker 5: Right, yeah, so this company in Texas called ViaGen.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: We we take them.
- 1:15:43Speaker 11: They're amazing, I mean, they did great work, So we
- 1:15:46Speaker 11: take the samples. We're just affiliates with them. We help
- 1:15:48Speaker 11: them out and they help us out. So Cline will
- 1:15:51Speaker 11: come in. The most important thing that is, you can't
- 1:15:53Speaker 11: freeze the pet. So the pet will say your pet
- 1:15:56Speaker 11: naturally passes away and you wanted to clone them. You
- 1:15:58Speaker 11: can refrigerate them, but you can't freeze freeze the pet
- 1:16:00Speaker 11: because it'll crystallize a sample and then won't be able to.
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: Get the DNA.
- 1:16:04Speaker 11: So that's that's one step that sometimes people kind of
- 1:16:07Speaker 11: skip up on and then they won't be able to
- 1:16:09Speaker 11: do the cloning. But we just take five samples, so
- 1:16:11Speaker 11: it'll be channellly a couple from the ear, you know
- 1:16:14Speaker 11: what I mean, small little samples and put them a
- 1:16:16Speaker 11: little vials and we overn ad them to them. But
- 1:16:19Speaker 11: because if we're doing the full preservation, we need to
- 1:16:22Speaker 11: take those from specific hidden spots. So sometimes when the
- 1:16:25Speaker 11: vet does it, they do it from like the top back,
- 1:16:28Speaker 11: and then we get the you know, and then they want.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: To preserve their pets dimple, Yeah, it's like.
- 1:16:33Speaker 11: And then they take huge samples when you only need
- 1:16:35Speaker 11: like tiny little samples because they're not thinking about the preservation.
- 1:16:38Speaker 11: They're just thinking about getting a good sample. So we
- 1:16:41Speaker 11: take them from like the like for example, if I
- 1:16:42Speaker 11: was to take from here, I had to go from
- 1:16:43Speaker 11: like the inner hip.
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: You can't see it.
- 1:16:45Speaker 11: It's already tucked the inside of the ear really deep
- 1:16:48Speaker 11: in the ear canal what you can't see it, you know,
- 1:16:50Speaker 11: areas like that.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: Yeah, wow, have you ever done a pig getting suckled?
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: Bal it's a little piglets.
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: We do do the little peg within.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: I'd like that. Hey, you know, we have a big
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: old pig getting suck but we have.
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: Two fetuses in the freezer.
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: You should give them to those guys there you go.
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Steve killed a pregnant sow in Texas a few
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: years ago and then we vac sealed a couple of
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: the Yeah we still.
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: Do you people come.
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: In just to gawk.
- 1:17:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:17:31Speaker 11: Yeah, it's tough because you're in the middle, you know.
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: I mean, it's working, but it's you know, it's nice.
- 1:17:38Speaker 11: It's a compliment because people just want to Some people
- 1:17:40Speaker 11: go into town and be like I heard about this place,
- 1:17:43Speaker 11: and I'll just run around. The thing is nothing's roped
- 1:17:45Speaker 11: off at our shop. So you can actually walk up
- 1:17:48Speaker 11: to the polar bears, to the tigers, to the lions,
- 1:17:50Speaker 11: and you know, just hang out with them, take a
- 1:17:52Speaker 11: photograph with them whatever. It's not like a natural history
- 1:17:55Speaker 11: museum where you're roped off with a scene in the background.
- 1:17:58Speaker 11: Like now you can actually come in and feel what
- 1:18:00Speaker 11: a bowler bear feels like.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: I'm surprised you guys can pull this off with only
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: six or seven people. I mean, who answers the phone?
- 1:18:09Speaker 10: It's between him.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: You guys are like, yeah, well, we're.
- 1:18:13Speaker 6: Working on everything.
- 1:18:15Speaker 11: So it's I mean, we've had we've had some front
- 1:18:18Speaker 11: desk people, but it's difficult because they go into their
- 1:18:21Speaker 11: spiels so fast sometimes that there's a lot of there
- 1:18:25Speaker 11: was a lot of relay, you know what I mean
- 1:18:27Speaker 11: between like everything where especially when when they wanted a
- 1:18:29Speaker 11: customs say, for example, and it just takes so long
- 1:18:33Speaker 11: to get somebody trained up to really take on that
- 1:18:36Speaker 11: position of knowing how to because you've got to be
- 1:18:38Speaker 11: creative on the spot. They're gonna be like, hey, this
- 1:18:41Speaker 11: deer's got to get hit, but he's got to have
- 1:18:42Speaker 11: a hinge and his arms got a twitch at the end,
- 1:18:44Speaker 11: and we need it like by Friday.
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: So what do you got?
- 1:18:48Speaker 11: And then you know, the front desk is just gonna
- 1:18:50Speaker 11: be like my first day.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: You know, I'm new here. Let you go get as.
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: Anyway ordering a pizza?
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I can see that.
- 1:19:04Speaker 11: So because of that, I'm like, you know what, just
- 1:19:06Speaker 11: I'd rather just picking up be like, hey, yeah, we'll
- 1:19:08Speaker 11: have it by Friday. It's this much, we'll do it
- 1:19:10Speaker 11: with this whatever, servo will make a little clamp thing
- 1:19:13Speaker 11: for it.
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: Whatever. Yeah.
- 1:19:16Speaker 10: Yeah, So it's kind of it's it's we need to
- 1:19:18Speaker 10: train someone, but it's gonna it's gonna take months. You know,
- 1:19:22Speaker 10: we tried, I mean, and it's it's it's very difficult.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: So at this point, if you had to, like if
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: you had to pursue one path, the film business or
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: the pet business, like which what are you more in
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: love with?
- 1:19:42Speaker 10: Well?
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: I love what the studios consistency of.
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: But what's consistent Well, it used to.
- 1:19:49Speaker 11: Be the studios, but then the strike starting to happen,
- 1:19:51Speaker 11: then COVID started happening, so that that kind of made
- 1:19:53Speaker 11: the industry go up and down, and then you got CGI,
- 1:19:56Speaker 11: you got a I.
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I see.
- 1:20:00Speaker 11: I think at this point the smart move would be
- 1:20:01Speaker 11: leaning towards this the you know here, towards this here,
- 1:20:05Speaker 11: towards the studios, because it's.
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: Fine and you're just doing cool projects.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I can see that.
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: Do you feel that the pet getting pets stuffed or
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: tax dermy or what tax dermy? What do you what
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: word do you guys use, Like, what is the sort
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: of line the graph line on pet preservation? Well, it's not,
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: there's no way it's stable.
- 1:20:32Speaker 10: No, well, I mean it's actually pretty, it's consistent and
- 1:20:37Speaker 10: ground outside.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: And the last it's a graduate.
- 1:20:41Speaker 10: It's last five years, it's been significantly Okay, Okay, Yeah.
- 1:20:47Speaker 11: I mean I think people think of the old ways
- 1:20:49Speaker 11: of doing it because we got I mean we have
- 1:20:51Speaker 11: mounts at the shop that were done dogs, I mean
- 1:20:53Speaker 11: from the thirties and forties, these bad plaster just.
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: Like newspapers coming out of the you.
- 1:21:00Speaker 11: Can see Selthier just kind of like wire poking out
- 1:21:03Speaker 11: the side and stuff. And I think people think of that.
- 1:21:06Speaker 11: So I think until it gets ingrained in their mind
- 1:21:09Speaker 11: that like you actually are going to get your pets
- 1:21:11Speaker 11: to look like your pet, it's going to take time
- 1:21:14Speaker 11: for people to see. And I think it's slowly starting
- 1:21:15Speaker 11: to come out with social media and everybody being like,
- 1:21:17Speaker 11: oh wait, actually that does look good.
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: Well yeah, And also people now like more and more
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: and more not that you get your relative stuffed, but
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: people now more and more act like pets are are people. Yeah, exactly,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying it's like a much more
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: of a trend right now to have a dog and
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: pretend it's like a person. But that's but that does
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: that falls apart because you don't get people stuffed preserved.
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: Some people do.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Is that legal?
- 1:21:44Speaker 5: I think I've seen it done a couple of times.
- 1:21:46Speaker 5: Not in the US. Now we get calls for it.
- 1:21:48Speaker 10: I mean, you know, we don't know if someone's called it,
- 1:21:52Speaker 10: if it's real or they just missing.
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: With us, but they dust.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: You know, yeah, what do you say, just not our business?
- 1:21:58Speaker 10: Not.
- 1:22:01Speaker 11: I think there was a story of a girl who
- 1:22:03Speaker 11: she cold, and I think she got it done. She
- 1:22:06Speaker 11: was she had to get an arm amputable and she
- 1:22:10Speaker 11: wanted to get a skeletal articulation of the arm.
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: Yeah, people send us those pictures of their arm skeletons done.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: There was a guy had his finger.
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: Done and his finger done and it was like the
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: Michigan Hello, or it.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Was he just had his finger on a pedestal. Okay,
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: he had the stuffed preserved. But you don't want to
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: do that work.
- 1:22:29Speaker 11: That's not that way down. It's just you know, we
- 1:22:32Speaker 11: just having this is not in our radar yet.
- 1:22:35Speaker 8: Well you think it's you think it's stressful to have
- 1:22:37Speaker 8: someone come in and look at the pet for the
- 1:22:39Speaker 8: first time and be like.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: Nailed it, dude, your finger, you know what, damn or
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: your uncle if you had your uncle done. You're like,
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: I want him to look like he did when he
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: was reading.
- 1:22:53Speaker 8: And you're like, just so you know, we've never done
- 1:22:57Speaker 8: this before.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: Tell you though, I'm blown away by the quality of
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: that dog. I mean all like I know, we've been
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: like having a couple of laughs about stuff. I mean
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: just from a from a I mean from a technical
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: like a technical standpoint, that dog is incredible.
- 1:23:14Speaker 8: The minute I the minute I saw it, it changed
- 1:23:17Speaker 8: my entire perspective on the idea of stuffing.
- 1:23:20Speaker 10: A pet, right, Yeah, that's that's like instant.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: What you don't I guess what you don't have And
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: it's and it's probably it's a it's a trade off.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: It's because it's so perfect. You can't get the soft
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: you can't get the feeling of having stuffed it. No, yeah,
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: because then it's not gonna you know what I mean.
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: It's like it's either like is it gonna be soft
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: and squishy or is it gonna look like absolutely like
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: a like a dog.
- 1:23:50Speaker 11: Yeah, sometimes people want to do like a soft version
- 1:23:53Speaker 11: of their pet things. We'll do it for television and film,
- 1:23:55Speaker 11: but with a pet, it just won't last. So I
- 1:23:58Speaker 11: see we get requests for it all the time, and
- 1:23:59Speaker 11: I'm just like, you can't get the structure.
- 1:24:01Speaker 10: Yeah, And I guess people kind of love the thought of,
- 1:24:05Speaker 10: you know, having their kind of like coddly pet. Like
- 1:24:09Speaker 10: you're saying, floppy floppy. You know, it sounds good in theory,
- 1:24:15Speaker 10: but yeah, when it comes down to the technicals and
- 1:24:20Speaker 10: the durability and and and also looks, it's not gonna
- 1:24:24Speaker 10: look bad, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:24:25Speaker 11: I think it's these hips, like for example, like you
- 1:24:28Speaker 11: got this with these hips that those ten highs that
- 1:24:30Speaker 11: are sitting in this room right now, you'd have to
- 1:24:33Speaker 11: soak them to get a good stretch to be able
- 1:24:35Speaker 11: to get full hips right, to get a soft hand.
- 1:24:38Speaker 11: You can't soak them, So you're never gonna get that
- 1:24:40Speaker 11: stretch to get to what to get a like if
- 1:24:43Speaker 11: you have those soft hands to keep it soft and pliable,
- 1:24:45Speaker 11: you can't get it wet.
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: Now you can see that bobcat back I wetted him
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: and stretching back out. Rand or grab that bobcat.
- 1:24:52Speaker 5: He's pretty stiff now.
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: Or it's like it's a trade off either you either
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: want to get them back like I put them back
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: on the stretcher boar. Yeah, but feel it you can
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: tell oh yeah, oh yeah yeah bummer.
- 1:25:05Speaker 5: So that's the thing. It's like, yeah, it looks like
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: a too. There's no structure. If you just stuff this
- 1:25:10Speaker 5: for cotton mounting, you're just like, oh, here's a little
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: look like.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: You got the wrong way, Randall, belly out, buddy, No
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: show them spots. Yeah, it looks incredible. I would I
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: would definitely see that. Like I get the point you're saying.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: If someone knew that they could have and I never
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: I've never seen them alive. But I mean I look
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: at enough dogs over the years. If someone knew that
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: they could have a dog look that good, that they'd
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: be more inclined to do it because they're probably picturing
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: their mind, Like when you go into a pawn shop
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: and there's like crazy looking we did a whole calendar
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: called fucked Up Old taxidermy, Right, they're like picturing that
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: I don't have my dog. Bug Eye.
- 1:25:54Speaker 8: Sydney used to always talk about getting her our first
- 1:25:57Speaker 8: dog stuffed.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: Preserved, preserved.
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: Yeah, no, well he's he's ashes now.
- 1:26:05Speaker 8: But I always I would always say to her, you're
- 1:26:09Speaker 8: gonna walk in there and you're gonna look at his lip,
- 1:26:11Speaker 8: and it's just gonna be like, you're never gonna get
- 1:26:13Speaker 8: that dog lip right, And you know you spent twelve
- 1:26:17Speaker 8: years like messing with his lips and face and like,
- 1:26:20Speaker 8: you know it, so intimately it's got to look like
- 1:26:23Speaker 8: that or else it's just alienating.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, my kid got a bear to spring,
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: a nice bear, and I call him. Why did I
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: call him about this? Oh? I know I was out
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: of town, but I was talking to text terms and
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: I'm like, here's the deal. Everybody always gets them growling
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: like a rug. It's always that he's got his mouth
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: wide open. And I'm like, I've come to a p
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: I've done the same thing, but I've come to appreciate
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: the closed mouth rug because when you see bears, and
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: I've watched great many bears, they're generally not running around
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: with their mouth. Okay, yeah that's true. And I'm like,
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: so you could have it look like all the teeth
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: and everything, or you could take my recommendation and we
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: could get him with his mouth closed. How do you
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: want it? What do you think? He said, he's fifteen.
- 1:27:19Speaker 5: Oh yeah, of course.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: Have you ever done a pet in a in an
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: aggressive posture?
- 1:27:30Speaker 5: We got it.
- 1:27:31Speaker 11: We got a request. And I can't name his name.
- 1:27:33Speaker 11: He's a famous person, you know what I'm talking about.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, he wanted his dog and it's aggressive.
- 1:27:40Speaker 11: He has a cat, but it's somewhat of a wildcat,
- 1:27:43Speaker 11: so I kind of understand it a little bit.
- 1:27:46Speaker 5: It's a domestic look.
- 1:27:47Speaker 11: It's like a Savannah cat mixed with I forgot savan
- 1:27:50Speaker 11: of something else.
- 1:27:51Speaker 5: And he wanted cat.
- 1:27:53Speaker 11: Yeah, and he wanted it on a branch, but kind
- 1:27:55Speaker 11: of aggressive, almost like it's gonna pounce on something.
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: Are you gonna do it?
- 1:27:58Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:27:59Speaker 5: Definitely? Yeah?
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: Who was it? Well? Tell me what tell me the
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: tell me the initials. I'll tell you my initials are.
- 1:28:12Speaker 8: I mean some of the charming pet cats is that
- 1:28:15Speaker 8: they don't like you, right, like some of the pet.
- 1:28:17Speaker 4: Cats that they come in and run away. So I
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: get it.
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: But I would also picture just from a business standpoint,
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: unless it's cost prohibitive, Like I'm guessing people are going
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: to be people that are emotionally attached their pet are
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: going to have a looser wallet than someone that's getting
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: five or six things a year because they're a big hunter, right,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: They're gonna look at it differently. But I would picture
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: that if someone wanted, like, like, I like river otters
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: a lot, so I catch an otter. I would I
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: could picture world in which I'm like, no, man, I
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: want some bitch like that an otter. Are you doing
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: that kind of stuff too?
- 1:28:58Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:28:58Speaker 11: Absolutely, I think we're doing we're doing I mean, it's
- 1:29:01Speaker 11: just a pelt, but a seal pelt, right now, that seal,
- 1:29:03Speaker 11: that seal pelt. We're doing a couple of seal pelts
- 1:29:06Speaker 11: for the Mammal Care Center. So we get calls too
- 1:29:09Speaker 11: from nature centers and.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: What are you doing with seal pelts.
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: They just wanted to preserve it as in an exhibit
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: a high yeah, yeah, like.
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: A height like what's hanging around in here?
- 1:29:18Speaker 10: Right, But it's going to be obviously freeze dry, so
- 1:29:21Speaker 10: it's going to be stiffing on a board, you know,
- 1:29:23Speaker 10: like on a nice board.
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: Freeze drud, yeah, yeah, freeze dried hide.
- 1:29:28Speaker 11: You know why that because we wanted to keep the
- 1:29:31Speaker 11: the fins beautifully intact. You know, I didn't want to
- 1:29:34Speaker 11: have to like recreate them in a poor matter where
- 1:29:37Speaker 11: it's not keeping the structure the integrity of it, so
- 1:29:41Speaker 11: that we kept the fins the bottom fins aside fit you,
- 1:29:43Speaker 11: I mean, and then we laid it out flat. So
- 1:29:45Speaker 11: now when you go to see it, you get the
- 1:29:47Speaker 11: real anatomy of the actual fin and it's not just
- 1:29:50Speaker 11: my version of it having not hung out with the seals.
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: Can you hand that cat back over your mint rental? Yep? Sorry,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: Let's say I had a cat and I, uh, like,
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: I have a cat, and I just skin it and
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: flesh it, okay, and I send it to you, and
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: I don't want to get it tanned. I just want
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: to get it freeze dried. Is it all the same? Like,
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: I just get it back and it's freeze dried, and
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: I can hang it up for the rest of my
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: life on the wall, pretty much.
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you'd have to flesh it still, you
- 1:30:28Speaker 5: know what I mean.
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna send it to you flesh and dried.
- 1:30:30Speaker 5: Yeah, it's flesh and dried.
- 1:30:31Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, but you don't want to salt it
- 1:30:34Speaker 11: because we don't we don't know, Okay.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: No, everything we do we flesh it goes on a
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: wooden board. Well needs a flip, but no, it's like
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: it's just beam. Yeah, yeah, it's like flesh and beam
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: and then it goes to the tannery like that. Yeah,
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: so does the world in which, like I said to
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: you and I wouldn't have any shrinkage.
- 1:30:53Speaker 11: No, you wouldn't have shrinkags. But it would be stiff.
- 1:30:54Speaker 11: It wouldn't be nice and flopping like this.
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: Stiff are stiff now maybe stiff? Still? Yeah, stiff was
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: a board.
- 1:31:01Speaker 5: Oh yeah, you'd lose all the it'd be like these ears.
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: So that's not a good replacement.
- 1:31:06Speaker 11: No, no, now you want to do it just a
- 1:31:08Speaker 11: commercial tanner And yeah.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: All right, I was thinking about get excited for a
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: minute there.
- 1:31:15Speaker 8: I was thinking about different animals you get freeze dried,
- 1:31:19Speaker 8: and I thought a big old.
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: Beaver sitting there. That's what I think. The tails haze
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: right now is doing a big fifty pounder. Yeah he's
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: from the bust and with the bust, and really they
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: want that big beaver done in a three point football stance.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: But it's a hefty beaver.
- 1:31:39Speaker 8: But I'm just trying to picture freeze drying the tail
- 1:31:41Speaker 8: because there's so much fat.
- 1:31:45Speaker 5: But yeah, get rid of all that fat. You have
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: to skin that tail out, tail out, get it all out.
- 1:31:51Speaker 11: Take as much as you can, just leave, leave the
- 1:31:54Speaker 11: best structure you can while still keeping the you know,
- 1:31:57Speaker 11: removing all the making sure the integrity is still there.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: Is gonna laugh. Yeah. Now, I don't want to pry,
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: but but I'm gonna help me out. But not like
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: other than the prime. I want to pry, but I
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: don't want to. I just like I'm sensitive of getting
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: into it, like getting into big you know, Like someone's
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: saying to me, like, so, what do you how much
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: do you sell a book for? Yeah, it's like I
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: don't know, man, dude, it's complicate question. I don't know
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: if they're telling you, help me understand what I'm looking
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: at here with.
- 1:32:24Speaker 6: This dog, probably around the range of.
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: That's it. Yeah, No, yeah, it's you kids told me
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: eight and I would have been like it makes sense.
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought my mind went to ten.
- 1:32:38Speaker 11: Yeah, three grand No, So it's we that's a lot
- 1:32:42Speaker 11: of work, it is, but we we.
- 1:32:44Speaker 10: Really know.
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: Their prices.
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: Oh, I don't know all around, like, yeah, do you
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: have competitors?
- 1:32:54Speaker 11: Not necessarily, I mean there's a guy on the East coast.
- 1:32:57Speaker 11: He's great as a friend of ours.
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: You send businesses a way.
- 1:33:00Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, we've worked together.
- 1:33:01Speaker 11: He's freezed out some stuff for us as well before
- 1:33:03Speaker 11: yeah before, you know, years ago he used to freeze
- 1:33:05Speaker 11: that stuff for us as well. He's the only other
- 1:33:07Speaker 11: guy that really I think is really in the in
- 1:33:09Speaker 11: the business, but he's way out east. So it's I mean,
- 1:33:13Speaker 11: there's there's a lot of people everywhere. There's business for everybody.
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: That's what That's kind of what I was getting at
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: with why I thought the price be more is because
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: I thought the price be more because it's there's a
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: little bit of a scarcity, yeah, or a special circumstance
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: or whatever, you know.
- 1:33:31Speaker 5: Yeah, no, definitely, I think, well, yeah, that's.
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: A very reasonable it's very economical, economical dog.
- 1:33:39Speaker 10: That's why I think that's why we have a high
- 1:33:41Speaker 10: volume of pets, because it's it's pretty reasonable.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: You know, you're not gouging, you're not gouging.
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: What about a hamster? What are we looking at?
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: What?
- 1:33:50Speaker 6: Twelve hundred, twelve nine hundred and twelve hundred bucks?
- 1:33:53Speaker 4: Way more value in the dog?
- 1:33:55Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, I mean the hamster is just it's
- 1:33:58Speaker 11: more such, just because you've got to be slip easy.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Here on a hamster slips easy.
- 1:34:03Speaker 11: Well because they thought so quickly, you know. I mean,
- 1:34:06Speaker 11: you know, you got your son and whoever that was
- 1:34:08Speaker 11: mooring this little hamster or whatever it is, he's gonna he's.
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: Gonna be crying for a while you're consoling them.
- 1:34:13Speaker 11: And then by the time you bring the hamster in,
- 1:34:15Speaker 11: if you didn't freeze right away, then we gotta do
- 1:34:17Speaker 11: the skin, and we gotta do everything. And sometimes is
- 1:34:19Speaker 11: you know, you gotta be careful with the slip it.
- 1:34:21Speaker 11: You gotta do it fast.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: Now some party, you some party when a parent comes
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: in with a hamster and they're like, little Jimmy's so
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: upset about his hamster. Some party you has to be thinking, uh, well,
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: little Jimmy is just gonna have to get over it.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: But that's bad for business. So you're just like, sure,
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: bring it in.
- 1:34:42Speaker 4: You don't have to say anything.
- 1:34:43Speaker 5: It's fun, no, but it's you know, we get it.
- 1:34:47Speaker 10: We get the attachment. Sure, you know, I have a dog.
- 1:34:51Speaker 6: I'm attached and.
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: You can do your own dog.
- 1:34:54Speaker 10: Uh, probably something, you know, I'm not sure what, but
- 1:34:57Speaker 10: I will definitely do something.
- 1:34:59Speaker 6: You know, create some memorial for him.
- 1:35:02Speaker 11: Really yeah, how about you yep, pets? Yeah, well I
- 1:35:04Speaker 11: had a cat. It was eighteen years oldly he passed away.
- 1:35:06Speaker 11: He passed away Memorial Day, just know yeah yeah.
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: Yeah, but did you freeze it well.
- 1:35:12Speaker 11: When he passed Yeah, yeah, it's you know, and we
- 1:35:15Speaker 11: have the acclamation machine. Thing is he was already eighteen,
- 1:35:17Speaker 11: He lost a little weight, he wasn't in his prime.
- 1:35:19Speaker 11: So it's not like even if I wanted to preserve him,
- 1:35:22Speaker 11: like you know, and I will advise people of that
- 1:35:23Speaker 11: as well, Like if you come in and you got
- 1:35:26Speaker 11: an old boy who's you know, not in the best shape,
- 1:35:29Speaker 11: I'll tell you know, maybe that preservation might not be
- 1:35:31Speaker 11: the best.
- 1:35:32Speaker 5: Thing for you.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: And hunting, we'll say that would have been a nice
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: buck next.
- 1:35:35Speaker 5: Year, right, yeah, year years ago.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:35:42Speaker 8: Do you ever have people who want to fix things
- 1:35:45Speaker 8: on their dog? Like when I've got labs, so by
- 1:35:49Speaker 8: the time they're eight or ten, they're covered in lumps
- 1:35:51Speaker 8: and you can usually see them. The people come in
- 1:35:53Speaker 8: and like, could you just smooth that big fatty bulge.
- 1:35:57Speaker 5: On the side of his ribs the tumors?
- 1:36:00Speaker 11: Yeah, you know, these are pets, So there's a lot
- 1:36:02Speaker 11: of that.
- 1:36:03Speaker 5: There's a lot of hair loss sometimes.
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:36:05Speaker 11: The hardest thing is actually because we make the studio
- 1:36:08Speaker 11: side with the f first stuff, they you know, iv
- 1:36:11Speaker 11: e marks from the vet because when they do surgeries
- 1:36:14Speaker 11: and stuff, they shave. Yeah, so we got to do
- 1:36:16Speaker 11: a lot of the hair transfer work for flock and
- 1:36:18Speaker 11: work that we do for the studio fake stuff, and
- 1:36:20Speaker 11: we bring that over to the.
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: You can make it if a dog had a shave surgery, Yeah,
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: you could try to get it back to where it
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: looked right.
- 1:36:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:36:28Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's where we create the furd. He do that.
- 1:36:33Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, so we do you.
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: How do you dye the fur? Like you got to
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: take some hair and get it the right color.
- 1:36:41Speaker 5: We having a ray of like a lot of fur
- 1:36:43Speaker 5: and im it's short hair.
- 1:36:44Speaker 11: We do this flocking method with longer fibers, like like
- 1:36:47Speaker 11: this dog for example, say that ear was slippage, there
- 1:36:50Speaker 11: was some slippage, we'd use long fibers.
- 1:36:53Speaker 10: We'd just flock it block it. It's kind of electromagnetic.
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: Yeah, feel like there's would be so much information your
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: guys heads that if all the people that worked there died,
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: no one's gonna walk back in there. And fired his
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: business back up.
- 1:37:12Speaker 10: Yeah, that's what.
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: I'm saying, Like a groad, like, if you're a mechanic,
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: everybody could die, you're gonna find you know, other guys
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: could come in and write, But on this I feel
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: like the institutional knowledge.
- 1:37:23Speaker 10: Yeah, it's just like just all that junk.
- 1:37:27Speaker 11: And that's what's difficult too, even for us to find
- 1:37:29Speaker 11: the right hands when we want to bring somebody else
- 1:37:31Speaker 11: on is you know, because sometimes like I don't want
- 1:37:34Speaker 11: to you know, we don't want to be doing everything
- 1:37:36Speaker 11: all the time, you know what I mean. But there's
- 1:37:38Speaker 11: times where I'm like, but it's got but it needs
- 1:37:40Speaker 11: to look a certain way. So until I could find
- 1:37:43Speaker 11: that hand that can do and we have some great hands,
- 1:37:44Speaker 11: but until I can find all the pieces to make
- 1:37:47Speaker 11: sure like that the quality quality controls everything, it's got
- 1:37:50Speaker 11: to go out looking perfect every time, you know. So
- 1:37:53Speaker 11: that's you know, so yeah, there's a fear of like
- 1:37:56Speaker 11: we step away, who's gonna if you did?
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: Right now? I'm sorry ahead, So.
- 1:38:01Speaker 10: That's another kind of like a problem for expansion because
- 1:38:05Speaker 10: we want to expand you know, we are expanding, we
- 1:38:07Speaker 10: get whether we want or not.
- 1:38:09Speaker 6: But the problem is sometimes.
- 1:38:11Speaker 10: We're so overwhelmed with so much you know, work, that
- 1:38:14Speaker 10: it's kind of we try to find, you know, like
- 1:38:17Speaker 10: he says, the hands. But it's very difficult, you know,
- 1:38:21Speaker 10: to to to find that person that's gonna you know,
- 1:38:26Speaker 10: get it or or it's in stay you know and
- 1:38:29Speaker 10: like it obviously, because you kind of have to, like
- 1:38:33Speaker 10: you know what you're doing.
- 1:38:34Speaker 4: Yeah, and you can't.
- 1:38:35Speaker 8: You can't just tell them to go watch a couple
- 1:38:38Speaker 8: of YouTube videos to learn no, some techniques.
- 1:38:41Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean it helps if they watch a video,
- 1:38:44Speaker 10: but it's all it's all handsome.
- 1:38:45Speaker 4: Very specialized.
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: Where where do you look, like, I bet you'll get
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: from coming on here. You'll get resumes from people do
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: but you probably get resumes all the time. And but
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: but if you had to go look like if you
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: had to find a higher I mean, I would assume
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: you're going to look in the traditional tax Deurmy pathway, right.
- 1:39:04Speaker 11: Yeah, Joe, I think, Yeah, I mean Joseph was a
- 1:39:07Speaker 11: great hire. He just came in out he was moving
- 1:39:09Speaker 11: from Arkansas to California, and he walked in one day
- 1:39:14Speaker 11: with a photograph of all his mounts. Good guy, straight up,
- 1:39:17Speaker 11: stand up dude, and he just he's like look, check
- 1:39:20Speaker 11: it out. Just moving out here. I'm gonna be out
- 1:39:21Speaker 11: here soon. I think he was sad and he wanted
- 1:39:23Speaker 11: to be a pastor. And now he's in a I
- 1:39:25Speaker 11: hope he's a pastor in Iah. So he was there,
- 1:39:27Speaker 11: He's talking me, I'm gonna be here for four years
- 1:39:29Speaker 11: if it's okay with you. Here, here are my mounts.
- 1:39:31Speaker 11: He was phenomenal, so talented.
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: Great four years out of Arkansas.
- 1:39:36Speaker 11: At Arkansas, stayed in Los Angeles, went to the Master
- 1:39:38Speaker 11: Seminary or whatever it was, and then put in great work.
- 1:39:42Speaker 11: And then we kind of taught him the studio side
- 1:39:43Speaker 11: of it because he was he was more from the
- 1:39:45Speaker 11: traditional tax tomy side of it. So it was like,
- 1:39:48Speaker 11: but we got to rush this, you know what I mean,
- 1:39:50Speaker 11: Like these are all you know, we do little tricks
- 1:39:52Speaker 11: to kind of skip a lot of you know, because
- 1:39:54Speaker 11: sometimes you gotta cut corners to make things happen for
- 1:39:56Speaker 11: film that you wouldn't do with like a Honting mount.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: Because of the deadline.
- 1:40:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:40:00Speaker 11: So, but he was great, you know, but it's difficult
- 1:40:02Speaker 11: to come across people like that who have that talent,
- 1:40:06Speaker 11: natural skill, integrity, interineity. Just you don't even have to
- 1:40:09Speaker 11: you just turn over and he's already doing the right thing.
- 1:40:11Speaker 8: And there probably aren't that many people coming from taxidermy
- 1:40:14Speaker 8: school that are like Hollywood.
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: Right, that's where Yeah, that's the other thing is, you know,
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: I'm sure there's a lot of at least in our world,
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: a lot of guys that are into taxi ermy, you know,
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: are want to want to live in rural areas because
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: they like to hunt. Frank that's where a lot of
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: their clients are because they're doing hunting moons, you know,
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: like like their bread and butter is white tailed. Do
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: your shoulder mounts.
- 1:40:35Speaker 11: Yeah, exactly, Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah, I mean, well
- 1:40:38Speaker 11: we'll get our mounts, but we get a lot out
- 1:40:41Speaker 11: of state. You know, people still ring stuff in a
- 1:40:43Speaker 11: like Colorado, New Mexico Brooks. Yeah, but just you know,
- 1:40:47Speaker 11: all around California, we'll get some. It was a bit
- 1:40:50Speaker 11: decent last year just because there was good rainfall, so
- 1:40:54Speaker 11: it was a little bit better. But it's just a
- 1:40:55Speaker 11: little four keys for the most part.
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: You're not gonna but you'll do you'll do those too, yeah.
- 1:41:00Speaker 5: Y yeah, yeah, yeah as well.
- 1:41:02Speaker 11: Yeah, huh, how many hours you work a week depends well.
- 1:41:07Speaker 6: Surprisingly it's pretty pretty normal schedule.
- 1:41:10Speaker 10: You know. It's well, only when we have a certain
- 1:41:13Speaker 10: project that is due and it's it's it's going to
- 1:41:16Speaker 10: require you know, weekend or maybe.
- 1:41:19Speaker 6: Long days nights.
- 1:41:21Speaker 10: It happens, but we try to keep it as normal
- 1:41:25Speaker 10: as we can.
- 1:41:26Speaker 11: Yeah, our hours are pretty much NIGHTE to form and Friday,
- 1:41:29Speaker 11: which are short hours. But if there's a big project
- 1:41:32Speaker 11: that comes in, if it's worth it to stay, it's
- 1:41:35Speaker 11: worth it to stay.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: And it's really never.
- 1:41:40Speaker 10: A night to four, you know, we say four, but
- 1:41:42Speaker 10: you're still there after, be there at five thirty, you know.
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, but you're still able to keep some
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: normal Yeah, with all that movie work, you're still to
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: keep a normal life.
- 1:41:53Speaker 6: Yeah we tried.
- 1:41:54Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: All right, man, what am I forgetting to ask you
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: about you SHO would have asked you about trying to think.
- 1:42:05Speaker 5: Freeze round fish? Now we don't know the fish.
- 1:42:07Speaker 6: That fish, no fish, I thank you pretty much.
- 1:42:10Speaker 10: Got it.
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: Has won't touch fish either. Yeah, stuck on that.
- 1:42:20Speaker 5: You know, they just you know what.
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: He's got, what he you know, what he does, he's
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: got what he does that he likes doing. And I
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: think he was telling us. I think he was saying
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: he's not a fish man and fish text him is
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: weird now because there's no part of the fish.
- 1:42:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean.
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: It's just like like you could there's there's no part
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: of the fish.
- 1:42:38Speaker 5: Now.
- 1:42:38Speaker 11: We have this guy, Robert, he was Roberts fish Mounts
- 1:42:42Speaker 11: for years. I think he retired now, but we bought
- 1:42:45Speaker 11: his whole old collection. So we have like a thousand molds.
- 1:42:49Speaker 11: I mean you're talking about.
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: Keeping all this stuff.
- 1:42:52Speaker 11: Yeah, we have a little warehouse up north, I mean
- 1:42:54Speaker 11: outside of the super expensive area, sway up north out
- 1:42:58Speaker 11: of Los Angeles, and there's a sixteen foot whale mold. Yeah,
- 1:43:03Speaker 11: like shark molds, you know, shark molds, I mean leather
- 1:43:07Speaker 11: bag turtle like.
- 1:43:08Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: Does she just walk into your warehouse? No? Non, just
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: dig around looking for something you swear must be in there.
- 1:43:13Speaker 5: Oh yeah, we have them all marks. So everything's long.
- 1:43:15Speaker 10: So everything it's kind of a twelve is.
- 1:43:17Speaker 5: Going to be silicone.
- 1:43:20Speaker 11: Whatever the salmon you know section you know, so it's
- 1:43:23Speaker 11: that's all marked up.
- 1:43:24Speaker 8: One question I had earlier was what is your store
- 1:43:30Speaker 8: look like? Is it in like in an industrial park?
- 1:43:34Speaker 8: Is it on a street that people walk up and down?
- 1:43:37Speaker 8: Like where's the I'm just trying to picture in Hollywood.
- 1:43:40Speaker 8: The text dermy shop, like do you get foot traffic?
- 1:43:43Speaker 10: Do you? So it's kind of it's kind of are
- 1:43:46Speaker 10: next to you. It's kinda mostly industrial area, but then
- 1:43:51Speaker 10: we have a pathway for bikes and people walk there
- 1:43:55Speaker 10: to right in front of the shop. So yeah, some people.
- 1:44:00Speaker 10: Sometimes we have the you know, the roll up door open.
- 1:44:03Speaker 10: They could see from across the street and they just
- 1:44:06Speaker 10: look and come in like spars you know, their attention,
- 1:44:09Speaker 10: you know, so they like just walk in and check
- 1:44:12Speaker 10: it out. So we do get some foot foot traffic.
- 1:44:15Speaker 10: People don't really walk out on the on the sidewalk,
- 1:44:18Speaker 10: right there's really nobody walking on the sidewalk, but they
- 1:44:21Speaker 10: have that pathway to walk, so that's where they.
- 1:44:25Speaker 6: Yes, And there's a we're.
- 1:44:27Speaker 10: Next to a city yard, La city yard, you know,
- 1:44:31Speaker 10: one of those big yards where they keep the trucks.
- 1:44:34Speaker 6: And and and then some other studios right there.
- 1:44:37Speaker 11: Yeah, there's there's a lot of studios kind of around there.
- 1:44:39Speaker 11: It is kind of like an artsy somewhit artsy area,
- 1:44:41Speaker 11: but it's not in the business.
- 1:44:42Speaker 5: It's not like in Hollywood.
- 1:44:43Speaker 11: It's Northalk, so you have a little bit more open
- 1:44:45Speaker 11: in the more industrial space. And then and my buddy's
- 1:44:49Speaker 11: next door mary door gym, So it is like it's
- 1:44:52Speaker 11: like an m M A gym, which is easy because
- 1:44:54Speaker 11: then I can go from here and I can go
- 1:44:56Speaker 11: work out there.
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: Absolutely, dude, I get over there every couple of years
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: on to come in and say, yeah.
- 1:45:00Speaker 5: Man, I would love to come check it out.
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: We should have done this there.
- 1:45:05Speaker 3: Yeah, we thought.
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: We know, we kicked around trying to come to your place,
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: but just like scheduling was kind of hard, just a
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: lot of a lot of we' said, a lot of
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: travel this summer and stuff going on, but our original
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: intension was to record in your place.
- 1:45:19Speaker 6: Well, next time.
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: We're there, we'll just we'll tack it on to a
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: schedule and we'll do another episode.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: Absolutely, yeah, that'd be great. We'll come out there and
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: do a thirty minutes. Yeah, man, I'll tell you though,
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: I can't bring it up enough. That dog is unbelievable, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Yeah,
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: that's cool. It's a really nice I mean, like I said,
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: you guys are good sports about having some you know,
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: about having a couple of laughs. The Holy ship Man.
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: The dog speaks for itself that's why it's it's incredible looking.
- 1:45:52Speaker 8: Yeah, We've had a lot of strange objects and things
- 1:45:56Speaker 8: passed through the studio, and this is like there's like
- 1:45:59Speaker 8: a power to that.
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: Yeah, dog, I wish you could leave that dog here,
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: but probably not a good idea.
- 1:46:05Speaker 10: It could work something out.
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: Rental.
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: Oh do you guys have uh do you guys have
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: cats and dogs in your rental area?
- 1:46:16Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:46:16Speaker 11: Yeah, absolutely, Yeah. Sometimes they'll down and hide or whatever
- 1:46:20Speaker 11: it is if they just.
- 1:46:21Speaker 10: Yeah, the neighbors. You know, I got a neighbor's cat
- 1:46:24Speaker 10: that you know, died and he said, you know, take it.
- 1:46:29Speaker 10: Maybe I'll see it in a movie some someway, you know.
- 1:46:32Speaker 10: Sometimes perfect it.
- 1:46:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: Do you guys ever grab stuff from the side of
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: the road that looks interesting?
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:46:39Speaker 10: No, No, but usually it's it's really uh beat up,
- 1:46:44Speaker 10: you know, it's like run over and it's guts everywhere,
- 1:46:47Speaker 10: So it's not Yeah.
- 1:46:49Speaker 4: You just go to those inspiration movie work exactly.
- 1:46:53Speaker 5: Photographing. Yeah, that's gonna be this. It's actually I think
- 1:46:58Speaker 5: it's illegal in California.
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: It is, well, I don't know, because a lot of
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: states have been making it that you can there's been
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: an odd trend there's there's two trends that sort of
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: surprise me and cultural hunting. Cult hunting, culture trends, that's
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: not the right word, hunting legal trends. One trend is
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: to let kids hunt younger and younger and younger. Right,
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: that seems that seems like counter than what would actually happen.
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: You could picture that they would make it that they
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: had to be older and older and older, like make
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: it more strict. But there's a tendency that let kids
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: to let it be a family decision. There's also a
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: surprising tendency to loosen roadkill salvage laws rather than make
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: them more strict. Interesting, you know what I'm saying, Like
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: if you if you said to someone who didn't follow this, like,
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: do you imagine over the years it became more strict
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: or less strict to pick up roadkill? They would go
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: absolutely more strict because everything's more strict. Sure always Yeah,
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: so they like like our state where we're at right now,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: used to I mean I would do it anyways. My
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: friends are doing it anyways as civil like civil disobedience.
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: I don't know what to bring up, like rolls of parks,
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: but like civil disobedience to like pick up deer and
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: eat them, because you'd be like guilty as charged like
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: a dead deer. The guy in front of.
- 1:48:22Speaker 4: Me him, you know what's the problem with Thatways, now.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: You can right, yeah, we're our said, remember that whole area.
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: I don't know what it was a couple of years ago.
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: It was like state after state Oregon. I think maybe
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: state after state after state said Okay, if someone hits
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: it and you want to put it to use, you
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: just got a call, and which makes total sense, makes sense.
- 1:48:42Speaker 5: I agree, because anybody, you think, anybody tries.
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: To purposely truck it, that's what you know, what they
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: thought of here because here you have here, you have
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: we have a lot of large like a lot of
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: somewhat rare large mammals. And so there's some that are exempt,
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: meaning like take like a big horn sheep, a bighorn sheep,
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: like a big mature big horn sheep ram is going
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: to have a lot of value, would have a lot
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: of black market value. And so they're they're they're not
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: part of the roadkill rule. It's just the more common stuff,
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: dear elk moose, like you know, more sort of like
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: so you know, common animals, high food value, but they've
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: pulled out some of the stuff that they don't want
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: to give people a reason to act like they got
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: in their truck, meaning like, oh, I road killed a mountain.
- 1:49:35Speaker 5: Go.
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: They're like, you road killed a mountain, go, So you
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: can't there's no excuse to have certain animals. I think
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: I'm guessing, but it's like they don't want to create
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: a pathway for you to have certain rare animals in
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: your possession by claiming that whatever happened to them. There's
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: probably some part of the thinking on it. The other
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: part of it which is interesting here. I'm not sure
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: if it's true in other states. Take the whole thing.
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: You can't pick and choose. So our buddy Yanni, he
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: had a road killed moose, big critter. You can't gut
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: it on the side of the road like when you
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: take it, you take it. So you got that whole
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: son of a bitch has to be loaded onto a trailer.
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: You can't just go get the parts you want. You
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: can't just get like the good meat and leave it
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: laying there. They're like, nope, holding moose, which de incentivizes
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: some you know, you got to go get a flat
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: bed trailer.
- 1:50:27Speaker 10: Yeah, and a lot of help.
- 1:50:29Speaker 6: You know.
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: Yeah, they make it a little bit hard, but picture
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: if not, you just jump out of your truck and
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: pull the gourmet cuts and then you get like a
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: butcher moose on the side of the Yeah, that'd make
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: for an interesting drive. You know, you're like watching dudes
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: on the side of the road, watching dudes on the
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: side of the road.
- 1:50:52Speaker 5: Do that road chefs.
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: Yeah, well, man, I'm glad you guys came. Man, it's
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: a lot of fun.
- 1:50:58Speaker 10: Respect for all that.
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: It's such a cool business, so unique appreciate it. How
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: often do TV shows call you guys wanted to do
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: like a reality show about your shop?
- 1:51:07Speaker 5: All the time?
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: Yeah, what do you say?
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: No?
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:51:10Speaker 4: At the point, yeah, they just finish each other's thought there.
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah, good job, there was no you finished.
- 1:51:19Speaker 5: She was right.
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: So you get calls and they're like, hey, we want
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: to do a reality show and blah blah blah, people
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: crying about their pets.
- 1:51:28Speaker 5: Yeah, just about the shop and the whole thing.
- 1:51:30Speaker 11: And it's just the reality world is a is a
- 1:51:32Speaker 11: wild world where they just infiltrate on your personal life
- 1:51:36Speaker 11: so much. And I like to keep my personal life personal.
- 1:51:39Speaker 6: Yeah, And also I think it'll inhibit a lot of
- 1:51:42Speaker 6: our you know, every day.
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: You think.
- 1:51:47Speaker 5: For sure it would.
- 1:51:50Speaker 10: Kind of slow down our you know, production or process everything.
- 1:51:54Speaker 11: So and then trade secrets like it's been. The shop
- 1:51:59Speaker 11: has been around since nineteenth too. There's a lot of
- 1:52:00Speaker 11: stuff that stays within those walls. So I don't want
- 1:52:04Speaker 11: to be the guy that exposes everything after over one
- 1:52:06Speaker 11: hundred years of the company. But hey, guys, I want
- 1:52:08Speaker 11: to make a little bit of money and show my
- 1:52:10Speaker 11: face off so that, you know, and ruin the whole business.
- 1:52:14Speaker 5: You know, it's bigger than.
- 1:52:15Speaker 4: Us on the pet side of things. It's so sensitive
- 1:52:18Speaker 4: it is. It's like if you had a funeral home
- 1:52:20Speaker 4: and something approach to.
- 1:52:25Speaker 8: The other funeral home would probably get stricking a lot
- 1:52:28Speaker 8: more clients.
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: Yeah, you go get waivers for everybody. Yeah, you know,
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: your your uncle's part of a reality TV show. Can
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: you shine your camera crew just sitting there for the paper.
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: It's just yeah, yeah, I could totally picture it. I'm
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: not at all shocked that you guys get That's got
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: to be half your phone calls as people wanted to picture.
- 1:52:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: Yeah, well thanks for coming in again, man, I love it.
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: We're gonna come visit your shop.
- 1:52:52Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 1:52:53Speaker 5: Yeah, I appreciate it anytime.
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: Thank you, Krim.
- 1:52:56Speaker 5: Yeah, we appreciate you.
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: I mean, Krim books, all the guests, but this one, this.
- 1:53:00Speaker 2: One was, this was it wasn't my idea. I didn't
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: see that article first. That was Berkman.
- 1:53:05Speaker 3: This is I'm really glad it happened.
- 1:53:08Speaker 4: Trophy guests.
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: That's the way to the trophy.
- 1:53:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: And shouldn't you ever wind up with a cat or
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: dog that doesn't have a home, we would be happy
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: to take it off your hands.
- 1:53:19Speaker 5: I'll send you something.
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: And I think maybe are you gonna send your dog
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: down when it passes? I mean, I would be cool,
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: but I don't know. You got a couple of years
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: to figure it out.
- 1:53:35Speaker 7: Yeah, I got a couple of years figured out hopefully.
- 1:53:37Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: Man, Uh, if you get a box from Seth, keep
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: it cold, all right. Thank you, Thank you,
