- 1:02Speaker 4: Back again, Doc, Good to see you, against sir, missed
- 1:05Speaker 4: you last week.
- 1:06Speaker 6: Glad to be here.
- 1:07Speaker 5: Well are you really sitting next to Flynn?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Oh? We had a great time last week.
- 1:12Speaker 5: Did you sit over here or did he sit like
- 1:13Speaker 5: there like the booth a man?
- 1:17Speaker 7: Oh?
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I'm not sitting in that you.
- 1:18Speaker 8: It'd have been actually pretty funny, A little same sad
- 1:21Speaker 8: next time, Lason, I would say, that sometimes we go
- 1:25Speaker 8: out to say, hey, you want a same sad sit
- 1:26Speaker 8: or what it's usually I'm a no on that, but yeah,
- 1:30Speaker 8: that's a no. But if we go to like a
- 1:33Speaker 8: fore top that's not a booth, we do sit like
- 1:36Speaker 8: caddy corner at each other.
- 1:37Speaker 9: Yeah that makes sense, that's okay. Yeah, I think that's
- 1:39Speaker 9: more acceptable.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I think that's that's the romantic way to do it.
- 1:43Speaker 5: I had to do it which way.
- 1:45Speaker 8: Like we said, it's a four top table instead of
- 1:47Speaker 8: a booth, we sip caddy corner. Yeah, yeah, yeah, not
- 1:51Speaker 8: a cross caddy corner. Why why that? I'm just romantic,
- 1:58Speaker 8: says who says me and me and my wife. Okay,
- 2:02Speaker 8: it feels like something you forced her into. Uh you
- 2:08Speaker 8: had a question about concussion, Yeah, just right. So we
- 2:11Speaker 8: were kind of like looking around the sporting world and
- 2:13Speaker 8: there's not like a lot to report or talk about
- 2:16Speaker 8: specific injuries or at least that we haven't like discussed before.
- 2:19Speaker 8: But we did see Wimby last week. He's like thirty
- 2:25Speaker 8: eight feet tall, so when he fall, he fall hard,
- 2:27Speaker 8: it's a long way.
- 2:28Speaker 2: He was a long way to fall.
- 2:31Speaker 8: He landed on his head and like he kind of
- 2:34Speaker 8: acted like he went to sleep a little bit, he
- 2:36Speaker 8: got a concussed But you don't see I guess, I
- 2:38Speaker 8: guess you don't see it from basketball players that often.
- 2:41Speaker 8: But I was wondering, like when you would always hear
- 2:45Speaker 8: somebody that gets concussed or gets dinged in the head,
- 2:48Speaker 8: You're like doctors usually told him, don't go to sleep.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Don't take you that until you get it. Look, why
- 2:54Speaker 2: is that?
- 2:55Speaker 5: Well?
- 2:56Speaker 9: I will say some of that kind of line of
- 2:58Speaker 9: thinking has definitely gone away. What you want to make
- 3:01Speaker 9: sure somebody's neurologically intact. You want to be able to
- 3:03Speaker 9: do a good evaluation, you know, I will say with
- 3:05Speaker 9: the concussions, we've kind of kind of gone a little
- 3:07Speaker 9: bit the other way.
- 3:09Speaker 6: Now these with a lot of the recommendations.
- 3:11Speaker 9: Now, if you're really worried about some kind of a
- 3:13Speaker 9: head injury, you want to continue to assess them, especially
- 3:16Speaker 9: if it's something more than a concussion, so if they
- 3:18Speaker 9: might have, say a brain bleed or something like that,
- 3:20Speaker 9: because you want to be aware if all of a
- 3:21Speaker 9: sudden there's a mental status change.
- 3:22Speaker 6: So I think the thought of not letting them.
- 3:24Speaker 9: Go to sleep is more so you can continue to
- 3:26Speaker 9: get reassurance that they're neurologically intact. Because if you know,
- 3:30Speaker 9: somebody goes and lays down for the whole night and
- 3:31Speaker 9: let's just say, you know, heaven forbid they had a
- 3:34Speaker 9: more serious head injury, like a brain bleed, it might
- 3:35Speaker 9: continue to bleed, it continue to expand and put pressure
- 3:38Speaker 9: on the brain.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Then they have more serious symptoms. You may not be aware.
- 3:41Speaker 9: But you know, the flip side of that is, if
- 3:43Speaker 9: you have an injury, especially a head injury, of rest
- 3:46Speaker 9: is the most important thing. So so you know, if
- 3:48Speaker 9: I really feel comfortable that it's a concussion but not
- 3:51Speaker 9: a more serious injury, I'm actually really big in saying, hey,
- 3:53Speaker 9: you need to sleep, because that's that's how you get better.
- 3:55Speaker 8: Interesting because I was like always like as a kid,
- 3:57Speaker 8: someone would get hit in the head and they're like,
- 3:58Speaker 8: you can't go to sleep?
- 3:59Speaker 4: Is it one of those ones Like it used to
- 4:01Speaker 4: be like if you just ate food, you can't go
- 4:03Speaker 4: swimming for thirty minutes.
- 4:04Speaker 9: Probably, So you know, it's kind of a similar logic. Yeah,
- 4:07Speaker 9: you don't want to cramp in the water, you don't.
- 4:08Speaker 9: You don't want them to start, you know, vomiting and
- 4:10Speaker 9: and and suddenly start to really deteriorate on you and
- 4:13Speaker 9: not be aware. So I think the big thing I
- 4:16Speaker 9: tell people is looking and maybe the first night monitor them.
- 4:18Speaker 9: But you don't just have to keep them up, you know,
- 4:20Speaker 9: unless we're really worried. But then I they're really worried,
- 4:22Speaker 9: they probably need to be at the hospital and not
- 4:23Speaker 9: well doc.
- 4:24Speaker 8: And this is this brings up a very important topic
- 4:27Speaker 8: now that we're getting into pool season. If you get
- 4:29Speaker 8: a big lunch in, you need to wait thirty.
- 4:31Speaker 6: Minutes, you know.
- 4:33Speaker 9: I've always told people that, but what I've read suggests
- 4:38Speaker 9: probably it's not as as brucial as we all think.
- 4:40Speaker 9: But I don't want to be the one that's telling
- 4:41Speaker 9: you not to, so it's it's it's probably okay, but but.
- 4:44Speaker 8: Hey, I'm at least just made me walk around until
- 4:47Speaker 8: I burned. Then I can give back him.
- 4:49Speaker 6: I think that sounds science.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it just sound science. I like, you don't want
- 4:52Speaker 2: the guess in there.
- 4:53Speaker 5: I like it all right.
- 4:54Speaker 4: So I've got one for you that I was thinking
- 4:55Speaker 4: about because I went over the facility yesterday and most
- 5:00Speaker 4: talking with some of the players and just you know,
- 5:02Speaker 4: getting some some updates on how they were feeling.
- 5:04Speaker 5: I started thinking about it because this wasn't.
- 5:06Speaker 4: A thing when we were playing, like guys that participated
- 5:11Speaker 4: in spring or you know, guys that were limited in spring,
- 5:14Speaker 4: like for y'all, now, like do you have like a
- 5:18Speaker 4: weekly check up with those players? And obviously we're not
- 5:21Speaker 4: talking specific names, but like weekly, is it every other week?
- 5:25Speaker 4: Because like, I don't think we had that. I'm not
- 5:27Speaker 4: sure that we did at least when we were playing.
- 5:30Speaker 4: But now obviously the game's changed a little bit. Like
- 5:32Speaker 4: is that something where it's like, hey, I'm gonna be
- 5:33Speaker 4: here on Wednesdays, come in, we're gonna check you out,
- 5:36Speaker 4: or how is that process to make sure that they're
- 5:37Speaker 4: staying on the right path to be able to you know,
- 5:40Speaker 4: be ready for fall.
- 5:41Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, it's it's it's like almost everything has
- 5:44Speaker 9: becoming year round. Yeah, it's it's we have people out there, like,
- 5:46Speaker 9: you know, I'm there every Wednesday that the days i'm here,
- 5:48Speaker 9: I go from here to campus. If there's guys that
- 5:51Speaker 9: we need to follow up on, I'll probably see them
- 5:53Speaker 9: the day. You know, obviously depends on the situation. You know,
- 5:56Speaker 9: I say it a lot, but we rely really really
- 5:59Speaker 9: heavily on the athletic train or sou so you know,
- 6:01Speaker 9: they're coming in doing their rehab every day. Hopefully that's
- 6:03Speaker 9: what they should be doing, and they're getting their rehab,
- 6:05Speaker 9: they're getting their work, and the trainers are gonna keep
- 6:07Speaker 9: us updated. So you know, they may not see me
- 6:09Speaker 9: every week, but you know, if it's a transition where
- 6:12Speaker 9: maybe we're thinking, okay, can we clear him to do more,
- 6:14Speaker 9: or maybe the guy's not responding quickly enough or something
- 6:17Speaker 9: like that, then yeah, what we'll see him. But but
- 6:20Speaker 9: we do follow up pretty regular you know, we get
- 6:22Speaker 9: injury reports every day. They send those out even this
- 6:24Speaker 9: time of year, and we know, like, hey, so and
- 6:26Speaker 9: so has been progressing well with his hamstring or he's not,
- 6:29Speaker 9: you know, and maybe they need to see me if
- 6:31Speaker 9: that's the case or something.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Doc.
- 6:34Speaker 8: Let's talk about. Of course, last week was the NFL Draft.
- 6:39Speaker 8: Saints make a big move. I think that everybody can,
- 6:42Speaker 8: every Saints fan can get behind and takeing Jordan Tyson
- 6:46Speaker 8: as the eighth overall pick. Now the only controversy that
- 6:50Speaker 8: this has at all because he probably the most dynamic
- 6:53Speaker 8: receiver in this draft well deserved to go top ten,
- 6:56Speaker 8: but the only like drawback has been his injury. His
- 7:00Speaker 8: a lot of it. Okay, So taking back to twenty
- 7:03Speaker 8: twenty two, he had a knee tair so ACL mcl
- 7:06Speaker 8: PCL it happens, right, and this is we're four years
- 7:10Speaker 8: past that that kind of happens. But this past season
- 7:13Speaker 8: a lot of soft tissue stuff. When you see a
- 7:16Speaker 8: guy that has a history of soft tissue injury, is
- 7:20Speaker 8: this something that can be fixed or is this as
- 7:25Speaker 8: a doctor, as an athletic trainer, as a coach, like,
- 7:27Speaker 8: if you see a guy that has some soft tissue stuff,
- 7:30Speaker 8: is this something that could potentially linger forever? They're just
- 7:33Speaker 8: more They're more likely whatever, for whatever reason their body type,
- 7:37Speaker 8: their muscle, whatever, genetically that they are more inclined to
- 7:41Speaker 8: have and continue to have soft tissue injuries.
- 7:43Speaker 9: Yeah, the whole injury prone question is always a tough one.
- 7:46Speaker 2: There.
- 7:47Speaker 9: There's I do think there are athletes who whatever it
- 7:50Speaker 9: is they're genetics, maybe it's their previous injuries that have
- 7:53Speaker 9: kind of predisposed them, but become more injury prone. But
- 7:55Speaker 9: then on the other hand, I also think just as
- 7:57Speaker 9: often as bad luck, so it's hard to kind of
- 8:00Speaker 9: sort through that. A guy with a lot of soft
- 8:02Speaker 9: tissue injuries, you know, in my mind, it's either somebody
- 8:05Speaker 9: who's injury prone, or maybe it's somebody we just need
- 8:08Speaker 9: to get a better training program. Maybe where they were before,
- 8:10Speaker 9: and no no shade at any particular schools or anything,
- 8:13Speaker 9: but maybe where they were because it might have been
- 8:15Speaker 9: the athlete just not taken part in enough of it.
- 8:16Speaker 9: Maybe they weren't doing a good rehab with a serious
- 8:19Speaker 9: knee injury like you had a few years ago. You
- 8:21Speaker 9: know a lot of times that next year you'll will
- 8:23Speaker 9: see some of these soft tissue injuries. So maybe we
- 8:25Speaker 9: kind of say, well, look, I think once we get
- 8:26Speaker 9: them really rehab from the knee, he'll do a lot better.
- 8:29Speaker 9: But you know, you're compensating for a while. You're you
- 8:31Speaker 9: got a scar tissue, you got a lot.
- 8:32Speaker 6: Of things, you know.
- 8:34Speaker 9: So I think it is a really hard question, but
- 8:36Speaker 9: is there some concern especially with these history of multiple
- 8:39Speaker 9: soft tissue injuries. Absolutely, because we've all had those athletes.
- 8:42Speaker 9: And look, I think I think our staff does a
- 8:44Speaker 9: good job. We have some good tricks. We do a
- 8:46Speaker 9: lot of the you know, we've talked to sometimes different
- 8:47Speaker 9: biologic injections that we'll do, and and we brought some
- 8:50Speaker 9: of these guys in and thinking that we might be
- 8:52Speaker 9: able to fix these these you know, quote soft tissue injuries,
- 8:55Speaker 9: and sometimes it's still really really hard.
- 8:57Speaker 2: So is the term injury is that a thing? Is
- 9:02Speaker 2: it real? Are people?
- 9:03Speaker 8: And I know that people are doing like these DNA
- 9:06Speaker 8: tasks to see like, oh well, this guy's more likely
- 9:08Speaker 8: to have an ACL or a kill whatever it is.
- 9:11Speaker 8: But is when you say like, is it all bad
- 9:15Speaker 8: luck or that some people their bodies are just built
- 9:18Speaker 8: to get injured more?
- 9:20Speaker 9: I really think it's both. But unfortunately I don't know
- 9:22Speaker 9: that we've identified what that risk factor is. There's certain
- 9:25Speaker 9: things we know some people have, you know, connective tissue
- 9:27Speaker 9: issues where their their joints are looser, and it's interesting
- 9:30Speaker 9: because those are people who are sometimes able to do more.
- 9:33Speaker 6: You look at a lot of swimmers. Always think about
- 9:34Speaker 6: Michae Phillips.
- 9:35Speaker 9: I've used this example before, but he used that thing
- 9:37Speaker 9: where we flap his arms and he'd almost clap his
- 9:39Speaker 9: hands behind his back, and I was like, that's not normal.
- 9:42Speaker 9: And so he was clear the guy that had some
- 9:43Speaker 9: looser connective tissue. So it allowed him to excel it
- 9:46Speaker 9: to sport. But those things do increase your risk for injury.
- 9:48Speaker 9: So we do know a few things. But and then
- 9:50Speaker 9: I think there's other conditions where just somebody is just the.
- 9:52Speaker 6: Way they're made.
- 9:53Speaker 9: Yeah, and sometimes look at these explosive fast guys.
- 9:56Speaker 5: I was going to ask you that portion.
- 9:57Speaker 4: Yeah, because like Zion Williamson has some soft tiss he's
- 10:00Speaker 4: incredibly explosive and has a different body type. I've told
- 10:04Speaker 4: the story one hundred times my rookie year. I'm running
- 10:06Speaker 4: a route and I'm like, feel like a little grab
- 10:08Speaker 4: my hamstring or whatever. I'm kind of holding my hamstring
- 10:10Speaker 4: and nerve yells you're not fast enough to pull your hamstring.
- 10:13Speaker 5: I'm like, yeah, you're probably right.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Sure, I think it feels like maybe if you are
- 10:17Speaker 4: that explosive fast twitch guy.
- 10:19Speaker 9: If you look most there's always exceptions, but most of
- 10:22Speaker 9: these hamstring strands, the vast majority, they're gonna be your
- 10:24Speaker 9: fast guys. And and again, you think about physics. It's
- 10:26Speaker 9: it's it's it's a force, it's it's speed, acceleration, all
- 10:30Speaker 9: those things, And that's just physics. You put more torque,
- 10:32Speaker 9: more force on that tendon, it's more likely to pop
- 10:36Speaker 9: or that muscle. So but on the other hand, you
- 10:38Speaker 9: know that's that's so where is that line? And because
- 10:41Speaker 9: I do think a lot of times it is bad
- 10:42Speaker 9: luck too. Just you know, really, you know, I've seen
- 10:44Speaker 9: you look at some guys and there's different types of injuries,
- 10:46Speaker 9: and it's just, you know, I think of like a
- 10:48Speaker 9: guy like Joe Burrow, who's kind of gotten that. And
- 10:51Speaker 9: of course we love Joe, but I don't think he's
- 10:53Speaker 9: an injury prone guy because they've all been different injuries,
- 10:55Speaker 9: you know, and if you look at each one individually,
- 10:57Speaker 9: it's a regular injury.
- 10:58Speaker 6: But he's had several level these past few years.
- 11:01Speaker 9: And and some type of people are saying that, and
- 11:03Speaker 9: it's on the one hand, you can't argue he's been injured,
- 11:05Speaker 9: but if you look at there, there's such different mechanisms.
- 11:07Speaker 9: It's kind of you know, I think it goes both ways.
- 11:11Speaker 8: How does the mechanism work of just let's talk about
- 11:14Speaker 8: like a hamstring pool. Excuse me, you could run ten
- 11:19Speaker 8: thousand sprints as fast as you can, then for whatever reason,
- 11:24Speaker 8: this one time you do it, your hamstring pools Like
- 11:28Speaker 8: mechanically what like it's just something just doesn't line up correctly.
- 11:34Speaker 8: Is there a worn down muscle or there micro tears
- 11:37Speaker 8: that just eventually that you don't feel eventually just give way.
- 11:41Speaker 8: Why that one time when you've done it ten, ten
- 11:44Speaker 8: thousand other times.
- 11:44Speaker 9: Yeah, I think you'll find a few different reasons sometimes there.
- 11:48Speaker 9: If you really talk to a lot of these athletes,
- 11:50Speaker 9: they'll mention to you know, I've actually been feeling kind
- 11:52Speaker 9: of tight. It've been feeling kind of tight the past
- 11:54Speaker 9: two or three days when I was running, felt kind
- 11:56Speaker 9: of tight. The number of times I've heard that, so
- 11:57Speaker 9: there was probably already a little bit of kind of
- 11:59Speaker 9: where art in the build? And maybe in those situations
- 12:01Speaker 9: we should rain them back in. But the problem is
- 12:03Speaker 9: a lot of times you're the same thing.
- 12:04Speaker 6: They do just fine.
- 12:05Speaker 9: I think sometimes it's a mechanics thing, you know, they
- 12:07Speaker 9: maybe they step funny, maybe they have to suddenly pivot
- 12:10Speaker 9: or shift or slow down a lot quicker than they anticipated,
- 12:12Speaker 9: or you know, I look at that. I pulled a hamstring,
- 12:15Speaker 9: and the funny thing was, I made it all the
- 12:16Speaker 9: way through, and I'd done pretty well, and I was
- 12:18Speaker 9: playing in a flag football game. After I was done
- 12:20Speaker 9: by stepped like a little hole so slightly hyper extended,
- 12:22Speaker 9: And that was the first time I'd ever really had
- 12:24Speaker 9: a bad hamstring. Pool and and again it was it
- 12:27Speaker 9: was a kind of a misstep. And you will see
- 12:28Speaker 9: that a lot of times, you know, they step kind
- 12:29Speaker 9: of funny land, kind of funny. So that that sometimes
- 12:32Speaker 9: and then other times it kind of we talked about
- 12:34Speaker 9: a mon just bad luck.
- 12:35Speaker 6: Just something that day.
- 12:37Speaker 9: You may run another thousand sprints, never happen again, but
- 12:39Speaker 9: that one time it just catches you.
- 12:42Speaker 8: Right, So when you pull a hamstring, there's a pull
- 12:46Speaker 8: and there's a tear, right, But even a pool is
- 12:48Speaker 8: that like micro tears?
- 12:50Speaker 2: Like what yeah, what is it? Is it just inflamed?
- 12:52Speaker 9: You know, it's funny because it brings up a good topic.
- 12:54Speaker 9: People always come in and they're like, hey, did I
- 12:56Speaker 9: sprain it or did I tear it? Or did I
- 12:57Speaker 9: strain it.
- 12:58Speaker 6: Or did I tear it?
- 12:58Speaker 9: Whatever the scenario is, and the medical speak it's the same.
- 13:01Speaker 9: So if I say you strained your hamstring, that that
- 13:04Speaker 9: is a version of a tear. House of years it
- 13:08Speaker 9: so like a grade one is a very mile That's
- 13:09Speaker 9: what probably most people think of.
- 13:10Speaker 6: It's a strain.
- 13:11Speaker 9: A grade two is a more significant tear of grade
- 13:12Speaker 9: three is a complete disruption, a complete tear. So most
- 13:15Speaker 9: people thinking of a grade three as a tear, and
- 13:17Speaker 9: maybe a grade one to two is a strain. For us,
- 13:20Speaker 9: they're all strains. It's just which one. It's just like
- 13:21Speaker 9: a difference between a broken bone or a fracture. It's
- 13:24Speaker 9: the same in our book as well. The fracture is
- 13:26Speaker 9: a broken bone. Most people say fracture, think a little
- 13:28Speaker 9: crack break.
- 13:29Speaker 6: So it's funny.
- 13:30Speaker 9: The terminology that we use is sometimes different than what
- 13:33Speaker 9: is used by the public.
- 13:34Speaker 8: So if a muscle is tight or hurt, there's some
- 13:37Speaker 8: sort of muscle fibers tearing.
- 13:38Speaker 9: Yes, yeah, a small strain that's very micro tearing, but
- 13:41Speaker 9: no disruption was actually pulled apart.
- 13:43Speaker 5: All right, Well, I'm glad you said that last one.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Because you were asking about Jordan Tyson, I'll ask you
- 13:48Speaker 4: about Oscar delp. He was the third round selection out
- 13:51Speaker 4: of Georgia for the New Orleans Saints. He played the
- 13:54Speaker 4: entire twenty twenty five season where they fractured left foot.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Didn't even find out he had a fracture in his
- 13:59Speaker 4: foot until the NFL combine.
- 14:01Speaker 6: Really, yes, yeah, that happens a lot.
- 14:03Speaker 9: It's it's you know, it's it's well, look and I
- 14:05Speaker 9: will say this, you know, sometimes it's on the athletes.
- 14:08Speaker 6: Sometimes they're not telling you.
- 14:09Speaker 9: So a lot of times, you know, we have a
- 14:10Speaker 9: lot had a lot of athletes that don't that don't
- 14:12Speaker 9: report injuries.
- 14:13Speaker 6: Sometimes it's on the athletes.
- 14:15Speaker 9: Sometimes they don't they won't let you get imaging because
- 14:16Speaker 9: they know, like, hey, I'm going to the league next year,
- 14:18Speaker 9: so I'm not gonna let you get an X ray
- 14:20Speaker 9: or an MRI on my foot or whatever it is
- 14:22Speaker 9: that we're talking about. And and then sometimes sometimes you know,
- 14:25Speaker 9: it takes a while to see it. You know, I've
- 14:27Speaker 9: got X rays and I'll look at it and it
- 14:28Speaker 9: looks fine. They come back two weeks later and you
- 14:30Speaker 9: get another one to go, yeah, there's the crack clear
- 14:31Speaker 9: as day. And even you go back, you may not
- 14:33Speaker 9: see it initially. So there's a lot of variability there,
- 14:36Speaker 9: you know, and especially some of these stress fractures and
- 14:38Speaker 9: things like that, and you know, if you're not gonna
- 14:39Speaker 9: get the MRI, and and like I said, there's a
- 14:41Speaker 9: lot of reasons why that doesn't happen.
- 14:43Speaker 4: And how much is like like playing football, I was
- 14:46Speaker 4: always you know, you'd have something to be like that's
- 14:48Speaker 4: just getting callous for football, Like stuff's gonna hurt, like
- 14:51Speaker 4: and maybe you don't even know what it is talk
- 14:52Speaker 4: about it, but then you know this at the combine,
- 14:55Speaker 4: like you're gonna go through a seven to ten hour
- 14:58Speaker 4: physical like the most thorough physically you've ever been even
- 15:00Speaker 4: if you never missed a game, which he did.
- 15:02Speaker 5: He didn't miss a game or practice with this.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Injury because he's going through this incredible like all hands
- 15:07Speaker 4: on deg ten hour physical.
- 15:08Speaker 5: They found it.
- 15:09Speaker 6: Oh they and and here's the here's one of the differences.
- 15:11Speaker 9: Like they are going to order the studies there, they
- 15:14Speaker 9: have everything there, they have the ctvm RI, and the
- 15:16Speaker 9: athletes cannot refuse. So once you are there, you know,
- 15:19Speaker 9: like I said, we've had a lot of athletes to say, look,
- 15:21Speaker 9: I'm not gonna get you. And they can do that
- 15:23Speaker 9: because that's their their medical right. But when you go there,
- 15:25Speaker 9: you're basically signing up saying whatever you want, I'm gonna
- 15:28Speaker 9: do and and and and they know that. So when
- 15:30Speaker 9: you step in and if you even mentioned that my
- 15:32Speaker 9: foot was a little bit sore, they are going to
- 15:34Speaker 9: get an MRI of your foot.
- 15:36Speaker 6: You know, that's just the reality.
- 15:38Speaker 9: You know, you had you had an injury when you
- 15:39Speaker 9: were in ninth grade and you played all of college,
- 15:41Speaker 9: high school, in college after that.
- 15:42Speaker 6: But they're gonna get pictures of it. They want to
- 15:44Speaker 6: know what that was.
- 15:44Speaker 9: Oh, you broke your foot in ninth grade, even though
- 15:46Speaker 9: you played the last eight years. No issues, Let's let's
- 15:48Speaker 9: look at that foot. That's just that's just the nature
- 15:50Speaker 9: of it. And uh, and look, we do the same
- 15:52Speaker 9: things when we get athletes in here. But like I said,
- 15:54Speaker 9: the difference, the difference is what we can't force it.
- 15:57Speaker 6: Yeah, and and so that's part of it.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Again.
- 16:01Speaker 9: Soon, Yeah, it may change. You know, some of them
- 16:03Speaker 9: are bargaining some of this. I think you're going to
- 16:05Speaker 9: see some of those changes. I think it will come.
- 16:07Speaker 9: As we're paying athletes. They're gonna there's gonna be expectations,
- 16:10Speaker 9: for sure. But we you know, we're still waiting.
- 16:12Speaker 4: There's eventually, and I know this is a whole different conversation.
- 16:15Speaker 4: There's gonna be a fine system. I think down the road.
- 16:18Speaker 4: It might be ten years from now. But if you're
- 16:20Speaker 4: gonna get paid by the school and you don't live
- 16:22Speaker 4: up to those expectations, some schools, by the way, have
- 16:25Speaker 4: already started some.
- 16:26Speaker 9: Of them that we've started. Something money it's yeah, I
- 16:29Speaker 9: think Colorado is. Yeah, and we have some of that now. Again,
- 16:31Speaker 9: I don't think as rigid as what nowhere Nearest Ridge's
- 16:33Speaker 9: the NFL.
- 16:34Speaker 5: But no, you know, if you get fined for being underweight.
- 16:36Speaker 6: Or yeah, yeah, none of that.
- 16:38Speaker 9: But we we do have where you know, if a
- 16:39Speaker 9: guy didn't disclose something and then it comes up later.
- 16:42Speaker 9: I know that's worked into these new contracts here. So
- 16:44Speaker 9: if you if you came in with a back injury
- 16:46Speaker 9: and you don't tell us about it and then we
- 16:47Speaker 9: get you in, then we find out and then we
- 16:49Speaker 9: find out, oh yeah he hadn't and Maria done when
- 16:50Speaker 9: he was at Colorado. Let's just say, I know they're
- 16:53Speaker 9: working some of that in already, and I think, and
- 16:55Speaker 9: you should.
- 16:55Speaker 6: You're you're spending a lot of money.
- 16:56Speaker 8: I don't really know how much you can do that
- 16:58Speaker 8: as when you're for a contray that employee. Yeah, it's
- 17:01Speaker 8: like a normal employee can't really create a fine system
- 17:04Speaker 8: for a tennin nine contract employee.
- 17:06Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Like down the road, like when things I think change,
- 17:10Speaker 4: like I think there's going to be collective bargaining, there's
- 17:12Speaker 4: gonna be.
- 17:14Speaker 5: It's not right now. Yeah, it's not right now, but
- 17:16Speaker 5: that's gonna happen.
- 17:16Speaker 6: It's coming.
- 17:17Speaker 9: If this this Jerson College football stays, it's coming, and
- 17:20Speaker 9: it should because it's way too much money. I mean,
- 17:22Speaker 9: you've had guys come in and then you find out,
- 17:24Speaker 9: oh gosh, he's not gonna play, or or we're dealing
- 17:26Speaker 9: with this injury that he's gonna be out half the
- 17:27Speaker 9: season and we were paying you to play the whole
- 17:29Speaker 9: year and accidents happened, injuries happening, and we re understand
- 17:31Speaker 9: that's part of the game. But if you come in
- 17:33Speaker 9: with it and we don't know about it, that's gonna be.
- 17:35Speaker 2: A current state.
- 17:36Speaker 8: Current state football is not sustainable, so it needs something's
- 17:40Speaker 8: gonna have to get at some point. Last question for me, Doc,
- 17:43Speaker 8: have you ever called one of your athletes a wimp
- 17:48Speaker 8: and or some version of that word wimp?
- 17:51Speaker 9: I've probably used a version of it, yes, Okay, I
- 17:53Speaker 9: probably have. Yes, I don't know if I've used that
- 17:55Speaker 9: such a whimp. Yeah, I've probably used a slightly more
- 17:58Speaker 9: polite version maybe, but but aggressive.
- 18:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I tried.
- 18:02Speaker 9: You know, we have to still kind of whatever, but
- 18:04Speaker 9: we've definitely I will tell people. I will say sometimes
- 18:06Speaker 9: you guys tough it up, and sometimes you gotta do that.
- 18:08Speaker 6: That's probably now.
- 18:10Speaker 9: Yeah, now now we're talking about maybe some teams that
- 18:13Speaker 9: I've coached too. It's also different the the the medical
- 18:16Speaker 9: speak in the and the coach speaks sometimes aren't always
- 18:19Speaker 9: the same either. I've coached my son's teams, and sometimes unfortunate,
- 18:22Speaker 9: especially my son, I'm you're fine, get out there. You know,
- 18:24Speaker 9: there's a difference between hurt and injured. I've definitely loast
- 18:29Speaker 9: that line, and I use that. I've used that as
- 18:30Speaker 9: a physician, to be fair, plenty of times.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Does rebind dirt on injury, actually heal it.
- 18:36Speaker 5: My dad said, rub some dirt on it.
- 18:37Speaker 9: I think it worked. I think I think it works.
- 18:39Speaker 9: You know, look, I I my dad. I had a
- 18:41Speaker 9: bloody nose once. He told me to smear on my
- 18:42Speaker 9: face and the ref wouldn't surprise not let me come
- 18:45Speaker 9: back in the game. You know, I smeared all my
- 18:47Speaker 9: face and my dad told me. I think I was
- 18:48Speaker 9: like seven, and he makes me turn around.
- 18:50Speaker 2: I was.
- 18:51Speaker 6: My dad said, you know what he knows, and you're
- 18:53Speaker 6: on face.
- 18:54Speaker 9: Apparently that's not acceptable in youth flag football.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Grow up?
- 18:59Speaker 4: What do we do it, Doctor Steven Athreide is good
- 19:01Speaker 4: enough to join us every single onesday here, Doc, we

- 20:46Speaker 2: Because I know the story maybe.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Off the bench presented by Hoodental that I loved you.
- 21:08Speaker 8: M I was always told not to go to sleep
- 21:12Speaker 8: after you get your head hit because you could just
- 21:14Speaker 8: slide wind up coma.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Good to know. Have you ever had a concussion bud undiagnosed?
- 21:23Speaker 5: I mean, seriously, do you think you've had one?
- 21:24Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 21:26Speaker 5: I mean I know for sure I have.
- 21:28Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't remember.
- 21:32Speaker 5: I'll give you a golf clap for that one.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Thank you, brain bruise.
- 21:39Speaker 5: The muscle memory.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Though, when you have one, like you go back and
- 21:41Speaker 4: you're like, I don't remember any of that, but it's
- 21:43Speaker 4: like you're still doing the same things that, like a
- 21:45Speaker 4: football play.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Is yeah, pretty remarkable.
- 21:48Speaker 8: I got a I definitely got a concussion when I
- 21:50Speaker 8: was deep snapping on the JV team my freshman year.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Yep, you heard it.
- 22:01Speaker 5: I don't want to I don't want to explore that
- 22:03Speaker 5: because we'll spend.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Too much time on I snapped. The hell why didn't
- 22:06Speaker 2: you keep doing that? Because I just played quarterback?
- 22:10Speaker 4: Yeah, but you could have like retired at quarterback and
- 22:12Speaker 4: got like five more years.
- 22:14Speaker 8: I was more like a one handed just like throw
- 22:16Speaker 8: a pass between my legs kind of guy. Yeah, all right,
- 22:22Speaker 8: because I and I can cussed. Got rocked, Yeah, cause
- 22:27Speaker 8: you're soft. It was probably why it was probably an
- 22:30Speaker 8: illegal head that didn't get united. The personal protector that
- 22:33Speaker 8: didn't last very long. I wasn't trained. That was that
- 22:38Speaker 8: was a bad rap.
- 22:41Speaker 2: That was a bad rap for me, a.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Personal protector, like let's get cam bond.
- 22:45Speaker 8: I mean it was a little bit Derek Dooley's trying
- 22:47Speaker 8: to be the smartest guy in the room. He's a politician,
- 22:51Speaker 8: like how smart. I A, I'm gonna put our third
- 22:54Speaker 8: string quarterback that's never hit anybody personal protector.
- 22:57Speaker 2: What Quinn Johnson ran through the aga untouched.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Quinn Johnson, who's like literally the most brick wall human
- 23:06Speaker 4: I've ever played against.
- 23:07Speaker 2: One hundred and eighty pounds head.
- 23:09Speaker 5: Yeah, I'd be like, hey, Quinn settle, settled down. They'd
- 23:13Speaker 5: be like, I'm just standing here. Yeah, you're right.
- 23:15Speaker 8: They're like knock you on the ground and like pick
- 23:18Speaker 8: you up and give you a hug and tell you,
- 23:19Speaker 8: tell you loved you.
- 23:20Speaker 4: He just like murk people in Green Bay. Like it
- 23:24Speaker 4: wasn't always controlled, but it was chaotic.
- 23:27Speaker 8: Took him about once he got to Green Bay. So
- 23:29Speaker 8: he was a draft pick, right, he was like fifth
- 23:31Speaker 8: or sixth round Yeah, as a fullback.
- 23:33Speaker 5: Yeah, and three got drafted this year, so easy.
- 23:36Speaker 8: So but that was at a time I think we
- 23:38Speaker 8: carried two full backs all the time in Green Bay.
- 23:43Speaker 8: He it took him a while to figure it out. Yeah,
- 23:46Speaker 8: because like you had linebackers that are smart. Yeah, that
- 23:50Speaker 8: got some meat head linebackers that would not like just
- 23:53Speaker 8: head up, they wouldn't but they would bounce off his tackles.
- 23:56Speaker 8: They get low they'd get better positioning on him. They
- 23:59Speaker 8: you know, faint him one way or whatever. Uh But
- 24:01Speaker 8: once he got used to it, man, he I mean
- 24:03Speaker 8: it's the same thing like a humans, a human, and
- 24:06Speaker 8: that human's bigger and heavier head, and he would destroy people.
- 24:10Speaker 8: He just wasn't real like uh shifty, real shifty. Yeah,
- 24:15Speaker 8: a linebacker playing fullback. You just hurt people.
- 24:17Speaker 2: He made.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Yeah, he had a nice little Tennessee after you all
- 24:21Speaker 4: shout out Quinn, that's awesome human being for signing class.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Let's go all right, So LSU Tigers all finished up
- 24:28Speaker 4: spring and now we look forward to the fall.
- 24:31Speaker 5: Uh so we'll start with quarterback position.
- 24:34Speaker 4: Okay, and we've got a great ride up on Louisiana
- 24:38Speaker 4: Sports dot Net by our guy Hunt Palmer. Right now,
- 24:41Speaker 4: it's kind of looking at everything post spring practice, maybe
- 24:44Speaker 4: what the depth chart would look like and what it's
- 24:46Speaker 4: going to look like at least to start the fall.
- 24:49Speaker 4: So at the quarterback position, we know Sam Levitt was
- 24:51Speaker 4: limited out there, had the pens taken out of his foot.
- 24:54Speaker 4: After that happened, he shut it down, but is on
- 24:57Speaker 4: track to be ready for a lot of the summer
- 24:59Speaker 4: workout and certainly be ready for fall practice. Now you
- 25:02Speaker 4: had a couple of quarterbacks, Longstreet and Clark that because
- 25:06Speaker 4: sam Levitt wasn't able to go got valuable reps. And
- 25:10Speaker 4: this isn't just like going to watch practice or talking
- 25:13Speaker 4: to coaches like I talked to players because I wanted
- 25:16Speaker 4: to know, like all right, hey, walk me through the
- 25:18Speaker 4: quarterback development. And they said, man, it started out, and
- 25:20Speaker 4: they were honest, like it started out kind of rough.
- 25:23Speaker 4: And there was a switch that got flipped about a
- 25:26Speaker 4: week and a half into spring practice, and they said,
- 25:29Speaker 4: once it did, you could tell, all right, they're getting
- 25:31Speaker 4: the offense. They're understanding what their duties are going to
- 25:35Speaker 4: be within this offense because it's a unique offense.
- 25:37Speaker 5: Not everybody runs that.
- 25:39Speaker 4: How valuable though, do you think those reps are going
- 25:42Speaker 4: to be for those two quarterbacks? And how much did
- 25:46Speaker 4: sam Levitt I guess miss in a new offense not
- 25:48Speaker 4: being able to be out.
- 25:49Speaker 2: There in the spring.
- 25:50Speaker 8: I don't think sam Levitt as much it could because
- 25:53Speaker 8: of his availability that he had out there, Yeah, at
- 25:56Speaker 8: every practice.
- 25:57Speaker 2: So the.
- 26:00Speaker 8: It was never going to be good for any quarterback.
- 26:02Speaker 8: I don't care if it was sam Levitt out there.
- 26:04Speaker 8: It was never going to be good for anybody for
- 26:06Speaker 8: the first week or two because you're installing not only
- 26:09Speaker 8: are you installing a new offense, you're installing a different
- 26:16Speaker 8: lane Kiven offensive approach to football that you've probably never
- 26:20Speaker 8: done before. Now, maybe somebody was in a really fast
- 26:22Speaker 8: inpo and that approaches go as fast as you can
- 26:27Speaker 8: and limited and very little like verbal communication because everything's
- 26:32Speaker 8: got to be code worded and coded.
- 26:36Speaker 2: And go as fasts you can.
- 26:37Speaker 8: It's not the same as like your standard no huddle
- 26:39Speaker 8: that you see that you might install for a couple
- 26:42Speaker 8: series in high school or college, whatever it is. This
- 26:45Speaker 8: is a basically a no huddle on steroids, like it's
- 26:49Speaker 8: going as fast as you can. So it's different than
- 26:52Speaker 8: anybody what anybody's ever done before. So that the struggle
- 26:56Speaker 8: in team situations and implementing and getting you used to
- 27:00Speaker 8: this new way of football was always going to be
- 27:02Speaker 8: a struggle. I don't care what quarterback you had in there.
- 27:04Speaker 8: When you do something new like that, it's going to
- 27:07Speaker 8: be there's going to be a learning curve. So again,
- 27:10Speaker 8: like if it was Sam Levin in there, the struggles
- 27:12Speaker 8: would have still been there just because but because Sam
- 27:16Speaker 8: was the availability, the mental availability as well as a
- 27:19Speaker 8: little bit of the physical availability and some of the
- 27:22Speaker 8: individual drills that we saw and be available for. That
- 27:26Speaker 8: was the learning curve, right, the how it's done seeing
- 27:30Speaker 8: it in practice, and it's not like you can bring
- 27:33Speaker 8: all these experienced guys over from old miss so they
- 27:36Speaker 8: can like teach them how it goes. Like these guys
- 27:39Speaker 8: are going and seeing it, they're hearing the coach talk
- 27:41Speaker 8: about how we're going to execute this fast type of base,
- 27:43Speaker 8: but they're not being able to like they're not learning
- 27:46Speaker 8: from seeing how it's done in a practice, so they're
- 27:48Speaker 8: just having to learn it on the fly. And these
- 27:49Speaker 8: coaches are having to teach them how to practice it
- 27:53Speaker 8: and teach them how a new practice, like a practice
- 27:55Speaker 8: type goes, and it's it's brand new for everybody, so
- 27:58Speaker 8: it was always going to be an issue. And then
- 28:00Speaker 8: you're going against the defense that has stability at the
- 28:03Speaker 8: coaching and like hasn't changed. Of course you're changing new faces,
- 28:06Speaker 8: but they know what it looks like and they know
- 28:08Speaker 8: what defense they're gonna run. So like there was always
- 28:11Speaker 8: there's thousand percent more stability on the defense when you start,
- 28:14Speaker 8: then there was the offense.
- 28:15Speaker 2: So it was always going to be like all the.
- 28:17Speaker 4: Coaches are basically the same, Right, you got two new
- 28:21Speaker 4: coaches I think on that side, yep, right, And one
- 28:23Speaker 4: of the new coaches is like Chris Cabin who's coaching linebackers,
- 28:27Speaker 4: but the Blake Baker, who coach linebackers is still there
- 28:29Speaker 4: as a deft coordinator. He now roams everywhere. So outside
- 28:32Speaker 4: of Kyle being gone, so everything else's.
- 28:35Speaker 8: The offense would have been ahead of the defense at
- 28:37Speaker 8: the beginning of spring. That had been a big h
- 28:39Speaker 8: that would have been really bad on the defensive side.
- 28:42Speaker 8: I agree, So I think everything's on schedule right now.
- 28:44Speaker 8: I don't think Sam Levitt is going to have that
- 28:47Speaker 8: same like catch up because he was again he was
- 28:50Speaker 8: out there, he saw.
- 28:52Speaker 5: In uniform helmet throwing the receiver.
- 28:53Speaker 8: But just being there and be able to watch a
- 28:56Speaker 8: practice and watch outs executed, that is that was the
- 29:00Speaker 8: biggest thing. The other guys, the two other quarterbacks, were
- 29:03Speaker 8: not able to watch how it goes. They just had
- 29:05Speaker 8: it like get thrown in there and yeah, this is
- 29:07Speaker 8: how we do it, like go get it, go get it,
- 29:09Speaker 8: get it, and they're.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Doing something they've never done before.
- 29:11Speaker 8: So yeah, yeah, that spring for that matter, the spring
- 29:15Speaker 8: was very important those first.
- 29:18Speaker 4: To what you're talking about in the process of the
- 29:20Speaker 4: offense being different. It's not just a quarterback that's going
- 29:23Speaker 4: to have to learn that. Like the receivers like the thing.
- 29:25Speaker 4: And you've heard me say this about Ole miss before
- 29:27Speaker 4: last year and when Lane was there. I love the
- 29:29Speaker 4: fact that when the receivers would make a catch, it
- 29:32Speaker 4: didn't matter where it was, it didn't matter how good
- 29:34Speaker 4: of a catch it was, it didn't matter what they did.
- 29:36Speaker 5: They didn't celebrate it.
- 29:37Speaker 4: It was immediately it was get the ball, get it
- 29:40Speaker 4: to someone, get it set. Like if it was hey,
- 29:42Speaker 4: you catch it out of bounds, you give it to
- 29:44Speaker 4: the side judge and you go line up. If you
- 29:46Speaker 4: catch it between the hashes, you go spot the ball
- 29:49Speaker 4: right where you caught it. They're going to set the
- 29:51Speaker 4: ball and you're going there's no celebrating, there's no look, look,
- 29:54Speaker 4: I love a good a first down, I love all that.
- 29:57Speaker 5: Right, there ain't none of that. They are just getting
- 30:00Speaker 5: the balls. Like you got to learn that. And the
- 30:02Speaker 5: offensive line. I talked with one of the offensive line coaches.
- 30:04Speaker 5: He's like, no, everything's good. We just got to learn
- 30:06Speaker 5: how to play in this tempo, in this pace.
- 30:08Speaker 4: He's like, because they're blocking their butts off, and then
- 30:11Speaker 4: they immediately got to get set and get on the line.
- 30:13Speaker 4: It's like that that doesn't happen. And I was like,
- 30:16Speaker 4: it'sky talking through it with him and I was like, yeah,
- 30:19Speaker 4: you know, come off fourth quarter program. And he's like, no,
- 30:21Speaker 4: they're in shape. That's a different shape, right, and that's
- 30:24Speaker 4: a different mindset. And I was like, yeah, I mean
- 30:26Speaker 4: you're right because you think about when we were playing, right,
- 30:29Speaker 4: you make a run, make a catch, whatever. Well we're
- 30:32Speaker 4: coming back to the huddle, right, you're getting to play,
- 30:33Speaker 4: You're coming in, you're taking a knee in the huddle,
- 30:35Speaker 4: we're all hands on the knees like that's our time.
- 30:37Speaker 4: There ain't none of that, obviously, And this is this
- 30:40Speaker 4: fast pace of an offense that you're gonna have in
- 30:42Speaker 4: the country. So you have to learn to play through that.
- 30:44Speaker 4: You have to learn to play at a high elite
- 30:48Speaker 4: level while you know, being exhausted, being tired. Look, they're
- 30:51Speaker 4: tired too the other side. You've got to get callaous
- 30:54Speaker 4: in that. And I think that's what spring practice was
- 30:56Speaker 4: good for for a couple of different position groups, but
- 30:58Speaker 4: maybe more so than need the offensive line.
- 31:01Speaker 8: Yeah, I can tell you I would not have liked
- 31:04Speaker 8: to play in this offense just as my playing style.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Yeah, this lane has objectively an off someome offense.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Yeah, you were a very, very productively a big huddle guy,
- 31:14Speaker 4: like I remember.
- 31:15Speaker 8: Like even if it's and I enjoyed the no huddle
- 31:18Speaker 8: as well, but my game would have just not meshed
- 31:23Speaker 8: And it doesn't really matter. But like just from a
- 31:25Speaker 8: quarterback like I, this isn't as much get into the
- 31:29Speaker 8: huddle and get into the line of scrimmage calling a
- 31:32Speaker 8: bunch of hard counts to dissect exactly what they're doing.
- 31:35Speaker 8: Like to me, I like like the defense was if
- 31:38Speaker 8: they got in their exotic pressures and there's it looks
- 31:41Speaker 8: cool because I got time, I'm gonna I'm gonna sit
- 31:43Speaker 8: here and dissect it and then figure out what to
- 31:45Speaker 8: do against that or how to how to beat that.
- 31:48Speaker 8: This is go as fast as you can. There's gonna
- 31:50Speaker 8: be less to look at. As a quarterback, there's still
- 31:52Speaker 8: a lot, but there's less to look at and try
- 31:54Speaker 8: to dissect.
- 31:54Speaker 2: But we're going so fast. They got to play super
- 31:56Speaker 2: vanilla they do.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Yeah, they can't do all the stuff that they've done
- 31:59Speaker 4: all season long. Saw that you know when we played.
- 32:02Speaker 8: All miss Yeah, I liked a little bit more of
- 32:04Speaker 8: the chess game, like the pre snapchest.
- 32:06Speaker 4: So you liked you know, the cliff where your boy
- 32:08Speaker 4: Klay Matthews is yelling at Cam Newton saying like, hey
- 32:10Speaker 4: watch this why blah blah blah blah, Lae and Cam's like,
- 32:12Speaker 4: oh cool, watch this.
- 32:13Speaker 5: We watch tape two.
- 32:14Speaker 4: Yeah, it goes throws a touchdown at Christian McCaffrey.
- 32:17Speaker 5: Pretty good, you're that guy.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 32:22Speaker 4: All right, we will step away. When we come back,
- 32:23Speaker 4: we'll get to some other position groups. Certainly want to
- 32:26Speaker 4: knock out the running back position group. We'll take a
- 32:28Speaker 4: look at some of the defensive battles as well. We'll
- 32:30Speaker 4: do all of that when we come back here on OTV.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Top the Bench.
- 32:35Speaker 4: All right, big show going on Saturday, made the second.

- 35:29Speaker 2: Make sure you're doing it with hood Dental. They crush it.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Hoodentalcare dot com. Hoodentalcare dot Com is the website. All right,
- 35:39Speaker 4: let's go to the.
- 35:40Speaker 5: Running back position here after spring practice. It's the most
- 35:43Speaker 5: important position on the football field. Matthew, what do you
- 35:45Speaker 5: mean you don't believe that.
- 35:51Speaker 2: No, that's a very very important position. One of eleven.
- 35:57Speaker 4: I would listen to you the one eleventh speech. No
- 36:00Speaker 4: quarterbacks ever thought that.
- 36:01Speaker 2: I bet you also really loved the Jeremiah Love pick.
- 36:04Speaker 5: Yeah, of course I did.
- 36:04Speaker 4: I had it mocked and like everyone we did on
- 36:07Speaker 4: NFL radio, I had Jeremi I Love going three overall
- 36:10Speaker 4: the best player in the draft.
- 36:11Speaker 2: It was an awful pick.
- 36:12Speaker 4: Yeah, sure, I really want to talk LSU here, but
- 36:17Speaker 4: you're making it really difficult, I know, because I want
- 36:19Speaker 4: to throw your little saying into the ground, like what
- 36:22Speaker 4: your thought process is right now?
- 36:25Speaker 5: Anyways, we're going to talk LSH running back here. Uh.
- 36:28Speaker 4: Dylan Jones and so hunt in the article again on
- 36:31Speaker 4: louisiansports dot Net, he's kind of breaking down the offense
- 36:34Speaker 4: post spring. He says in the article, I truly believe
- 36:36Speaker 4: Dylan Jones would start if las who played a game
- 36:38Speaker 4: on May the first, And I don't think he's wrong.
- 36:41Speaker 4: And that might be a big surprise for a lot
- 36:43Speaker 4: of people to hear that right now, because you have
- 36:46Speaker 4: Kaden Durham, you have Harlan Berry coming back, and they're
- 36:48Speaker 4: going to play.
- 36:49Speaker 5: This is going to be a three back rotation. Truly
- 36:51Speaker 5: believe that.
- 36:53Speaker 4: But when you go out to spring practice, when you
- 36:55Speaker 4: talk to the people that are on the offensive staff,
- 36:57Speaker 4: when you talk to the players on defense, they keep
- 37:01Speaker 4: talking about Dylan Jones and what he is and what
- 37:05Speaker 4: he can bring to the table. Now, his stats aren't
- 37:09Speaker 4: like eye popping from a year ago at Wisconsin seventy
- 37:12Speaker 4: six carries, three hundred yards, only two touchdowns, only three
- 37:16Speaker 4: point nine yards per carry, so that production it wasn't
- 37:21Speaker 4: a lot. Now, he was a freshman, we all know
- 37:24Speaker 4: you get better as you go along, But in spring
- 37:27Speaker 4: he was very impressive. And again, like talking to the
- 37:30Speaker 4: guys on the defense, they did not like having to
- 37:34Speaker 4: tackle him in Spain, Like he has a little bit
- 37:37Speaker 4: of something right now that the other running backs don't have.
- 37:40Speaker 4: So I do find it interesting that he has gained
- 37:42Speaker 4: this much momentum. He has really caught the attention of again,
- 37:46Speaker 4: not just the offensive staff, not just Kevin Smith, the
- 37:49Speaker 4: running backs coach, but really the defensive players that.
- 37:52Speaker 5: He's going against.
- 37:53Speaker 4: So I think we could find our way into getting
- 37:56Speaker 4: back to what we've seen for a long time at LSU,
- 37:58Speaker 4: a true running back by rotation.
- 38:00Speaker 8: Yeah, what kind of what kind of back is Dylan
- 38:02Speaker 8: Jones you talked about They don't want to really didn't
- 38:04Speaker 8: want to see him in the open field because he's
- 38:06Speaker 8: got I.
- 38:06Speaker 4: Think he's got a little bit well, no, I think
- 38:07Speaker 4: he's got a little bit of everything. Is kind of
- 38:09Speaker 4: the way that again when I was talking with the
- 38:11Speaker 4: players that they kind of described it of he can
- 38:14Speaker 4: run past you, he can make you miss, he can
- 38:16Speaker 4: kind of try to run through you you know he's
- 38:19Speaker 4: he's right there at the five eleven and a half
- 38:21Speaker 4: six foot two hundred and twelve pound range, so he
- 38:24Speaker 4: gets you a little bit of that.
- 38:25Speaker 8: I feel like all three of those running backs are
- 38:27Speaker 8: kind of the same style, then they can kind of
- 38:31Speaker 8: do a little bit.
- 38:32Speaker 5: Barry's more. Barry would be, I guess, more of a
- 38:34Speaker 5: scat back shifty.
- 38:36Speaker 4: I think for Cayden Durham, like he's obviously got track speed,
- 38:40Speaker 4: I think Cayden can be a physical runner. Like that
- 38:42Speaker 4: clip that that person sent us was asking about is
- 38:45Speaker 4: his counterpower, like he broke three tackles. It felt like
- 38:48Speaker 4: in that one clip. I think he could actually lean
- 38:50Speaker 4: more into that portion of his game.
- 38:52Speaker 5: Now.
- 38:53Speaker 4: I know it's hard, like when you know you've got,
- 38:55Speaker 4: you know this track speed, but I think he is
- 38:58Speaker 4: big enough to be able to do that. Dylan Jones
- 39:01Speaker 4: has earned some carries in the fall. Like again, if
- 39:04Speaker 4: Hunt saying it, coaches are saying it, defer the players
- 39:07Speaker 4: are saying it. He has made as big of an
- 39:09Speaker 4: impression on this coaching staff maybe as anybody, and probably
- 39:13Speaker 4: a little bit of a surprise considering again he was
- 39:15Speaker 4: a freshman, but you know, only three hundred yards on
- 39:18Speaker 4: the ground last year.
- 39:22Speaker 8: Yeah, I just you know, I read this and I
- 39:25Speaker 8: was as shocked as probably anybody is to hear that.
- 39:29Speaker 8: That's kind of the viewpoint that people had coming out
- 39:31Speaker 8: of spring that if we started on May first, I
- 39:34Speaker 8: think Dylan Jones would be the probably get the first
- 39:37Speaker 8: rapid running it out.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Now, a lot's gonna change. Don't like nothing needs to be.
- 39:41Speaker 8: Judged off of off of spring training. Like we have
- 39:44Speaker 8: talked about multiple times, spring training is just it's the
- 39:47Speaker 8: portion of a couple of weeks where you learn a lot.
- 39:49Speaker 8: But people are just fine for pole position going into
- 39:51Speaker 8: the going into the summer. So we know, and the
- 39:54Speaker 8: coaches probably know a lot more of what they have
- 39:56Speaker 8: in Harlan Berry and Caden Durham than they do Dylan Jones.
- 40:00Speaker 8: Probably why one of the reasons why he got a
- 40:02Speaker 8: lot of reps because they kind of know what they
- 40:03Speaker 8: got with these other guys because of all the reps
- 40:05Speaker 8: and that they had. I mean, it is a new staff,
- 40:08Speaker 8: though it is a new staff comp but they they
- 40:12Speaker 8: played against them, played against them, they're more familiarized. Well,
- 40:15Speaker 8: I would think, yeah, But I think as LSU fans,
- 40:19Speaker 8: you're in a really good spot at that. I mean,
- 40:21Speaker 8: that's got to be probably, if not the best, one
- 40:25Speaker 8: of the top position groups that you have going into
- 40:29Speaker 8: next year in the running back ground.
- 40:30Speaker 4: Look, I have no problem being a running back by
- 40:32Speaker 4: committee either. I think if it makes sense. I don't
- 40:36Speaker 4: like forcing a running back by committee because you're like, hey,
- 40:38Speaker 4: like we need to play these three guys. But if
- 40:40Speaker 4: the three guys have the same skill set, it doesn't
- 40:42Speaker 4: make sense. You don't have to do it. But if
- 40:45Speaker 4: you have three guys that have something a little bit different,
- 40:48Speaker 4: then I think you absolutely you utilize that right, you use.
- 40:52Speaker 5: It to your advantage.
- 40:54Speaker 4: And we could go back, and we've done this so
- 40:56Speaker 4: many times, but I do think it's important every time
- 40:58Speaker 4: we have this conversation to remind our listeners. Two thousand
- 41:01Speaker 4: and three, Sure, like by the end of it, JV
- 41:04Speaker 4: took off, but that group had Joe, I had Shyroun
- 41:07Speaker 4: carry right, it had a lot of different backs. Alie, Brusard,
- 41:11Speaker 4: Barrington Edwards even got some carries. Okay in O seven right,
- 41:15Speaker 4: I might have gotten the most carries, but Keeling and
- 41:18Speaker 4: Charles and Trendon and Richard Murphy, all those guys helped
- 41:21Speaker 4: us win a national championship. They were all out of
- 41:24Speaker 4: the backfield. We had two fullbacks. And it's good because
- 41:26Speaker 4: everybody also had their game too. Write no doubt were
- 41:29Speaker 4: the multiple everybody had a game in a moment in
- 41:31Speaker 4: it where they were the guy difference man Charles against
- 41:36Speaker 4: two lane in Kentucky that year, Like I still like
- 41:38Speaker 4: Charles Scott to me is maybe the most underrated running
- 41:40Speaker 4: back of all time at LSU. So I'm always gonna
- 41:42Speaker 4: wax poetic about what Charles did. But Keeling had Virginia
- 41:45Speaker 4: Tech murph in the national championship game to close it
- 41:48Speaker 4: out right, and Trenton certainly had his money so we
- 41:51Speaker 4: could go eleven.
- 41:52Speaker 5: They didn't win it, but they made it. They had
- 41:54Speaker 5: four or five running backs that played in eleven.
- 41:56Speaker 4: Like clyde year in twenty nineteen was kind of the
- 41:58Speaker 4: outliers of having single back success on that team. He
- 42:02Speaker 4: had TDP, he had Emory, but that was client Clyde
- 42:05Speaker 4: played more snaps than any running back of the country
- 42:08Speaker 4: that year, so I know, at least in the power
- 42:11Speaker 4: for he did.
- 42:12Speaker 5: So.
- 42:12Speaker 4: The whole point is like in l shu's history, their
- 42:16Speaker 4: most successful seasons have come being a running back back committee.
- 42:20Speaker 2: And it's and it's a it's a luxury.
- 42:23Speaker 8: It's a luxury to have that as a team when
- 42:24Speaker 8: you have that mini good running backs who could probably
- 42:29Speaker 8: be a top running back at the majority of other
- 42:33Speaker 8: universities they go to. So look, LS you, you were
- 42:36Speaker 8: in a good spot at the running back position. Like
- 42:38Speaker 8: I said, I know, you're gonna have some really strong
- 42:40Speaker 8: position groups, but you're gonna be hard pressed to find
- 42:43Speaker 8: another position group better than your running back.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Group this year.
- 42:48Speaker 5: Just waiting on the fullback.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Did I not say that? What did I not say?
- 42:54Speaker 2: Fullbacks are really good too?
- 42:56Speaker 5: We don't have one, but you imagine what would be
- 42:59Speaker 5: like if we did.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Heh yeah, brother, All.
- 43:01Speaker 4: Right, we'll take a break more OTV when we come
- 43:03Speaker 4: back here live from the Raisincaines Studio.
- 43:06Speaker 5: Off the bench, al right, go to fabt dot com.
- 43:09Speaker 4: Fabt dot com First American Bank and Trust been in
- 43:12Speaker 4: the game for over a hundred years.
- 43:14Speaker 5: That's right, over one hundred years. That is a very
