- 0:27into our study. Hey man, would you take your
- 0:31Bibles and open them to Acts chapter 8.
- 0:34We start a new chapter today in our verse by verse study,
- 0:38through the book of Acts. We're learning how it is to be
- 0:41the church. Not just talk about the church,
- 0:43not just think about the church, but we have a responsibility to
- 0:47be the church because we are the church.
- 0:50It's not a building, not a location, but we are the very
- 0:54Temple of the Holy Spirit and the title of our message today
- 0:58is God will do. What it takes to stir you up,
- 1:03God will do what it takes to stir you up.
- 1:07And the reason why is because we have a tendency to settle down
- 1:11into Times of comfort and ease. It's a very natural response to
- 1:17living life and I'm sure you've noticed just how easy it is to
- 1:21settle down to be in a place of comfort and ease or we might
- 1:26even describe that as coasting along or Our way that that's
- 1:31described as phoning it in, you're not really making major
- 1:34progress, taking steps of Faith but you're also not going
- 1:37backwards at the same time, you're just coasting along and
- 1:41you liked it. But let me say to you today that
- 1:45coasting along as a believer in Jesus is not a good place to be.
- 1:50It's God's desire that you are continually moving and growing
- 1:56going from glory to glory and strength.
- 1:58The string, Peter would Put it this way in second Peter, you
- 2:01can just jot it down in chapter 3 in verse 17.
- 2:05He said this you. Therefore beloved since, you
- 2:09know, this beforehand beware lest you also fall from your own
- 2:15steadfastness being led away with the error of the wicked,
- 2:20but grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord and
- 2:23Savior. Jesus Christ to him, be the
- 2:25glory, both now and forever. It is God's will for you and I
- 2:30to To grow in his grace and his knowledge, it's God's will for
- 2:34you. And I not to fall from our
- 2:35steadfastness and the early church here by the time we get
- 2:39to chapter 8 in the book of Acts is in a relatively good place.
- 2:44And the reason why they're in a relatively good place is because
- 2:48of their steadfastness. You remember back in Acts?
- 2:51Chapter 2 and verse 42, we learn one of the secrets of their
- 2:55strength and the Bible says that they continued steadfastly.
- 3:00SLI in the apostles Doctrine in prayer and fellowship and in the
- 3:05breaking of bread, they were a steadfast community of Jesus
- 3:09followers who continued on going forward, and they come to a
- 3:15place in chapter 8, where now, God is going to stir them up,
- 3:18why? Because they need to be stirred
- 3:21up up until this point, they've been very faithful in Jerusalem.
- 3:26They've been very faithful in ministering the gospel in their
- 3:29home. Base and their city.
- 3:32But again, hold your places in chapter 8, turn back to chapter
- 3:351. It wasn't God's will for them to
- 3:38be faithful only in Jerusalem. There was a much broader calling
- 3:44upon their lives. Even today.
- 3:46There's a much broader calling on your life but remember,
- 3:50before Pentecost, Jesus before he ascended into heaven, his
- 3:54final words to the Believers are found here in verse 8 of chapter
- 3:571, speaking about the coming of the Holy Spirit.
- 4:00What he said, but you shall receive power when the Holy
- 4:04Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to me in
- 4:08Jerusalem in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the
- 4:13Earth and so far, some commentators believe it's been
- 4:18about a year now, from the beginning of the church to
- 4:22chapter 8, so far, the church has been very faithful in
- 4:27Jerusalem. You could say that the early
- 4:30church Church is not really in Disobedience by the time we get
- 4:33to chapter 7 and 8 but they're also not really moving out to
- 4:37obey. Acts 1:8 either, they're just
- 4:40coasting along they're comfortable and content.
- 4:44But in a dangerous way instead of reaching out they've sort old
- 4:49sort of huddled together. Kind of like a little holy
- 4:52Christian Church huddle we're going to hang out with my
- 4:55Christian friends, do my Christian thing and we're just
- 4:58let the world go and be the But that's not God's will for your
- 5:02life, the call of God in your life then for the Believers
- 5:06then. And for us now is to infiltrate
- 5:09this culture not to isolate ourselves and I mean especially
- 5:13in a season of where our world is just going south, very
- 5:16rapidly, just like God predicted would happen in the last days.
- 5:21There is this temptation for the church just to pull away, run
- 5:25away isolate and let the world be the world.
- 5:29You know, I wouldn't be unusual. Unusual to go.
- 5:30You know what the world's going so far away from God.
- 5:33And so Antichrist, we should just get together with a group
- 5:36of Believers and go to the Rocky Mountains and live in a cave
- 5:39together. You know what, you're not going
- 5:41to like that very much because Believers have issues, too.
- 5:45And you're not going to be able to hide away from the way that
- 5:48sin has affected you, and me, and by the way, it's not God's
- 5:52will for you to run away to the mountains and leave the loss to
- 5:55be lost. He wants you to infiltrate.
- 5:58You are in this world. To not of this world.
- 6:02The Bible says and you are the very messengers of the Gospel,
- 6:07the heart of our church. When disciple and sinned, and
- 6:13every moment of every day you are sent into a very challenging
- 6:20culture that needs to see the salt and the light needs to
- 6:24experience. What a real believer looks like
- 6:27and sounds like it. It is the Great.
- 6:30Commission. Matthew chapter 28, and verse
- 6:3319, go, therefore, and make disciples.
- 6:38And if we choose just to hang around in a holy huddle, then
- 6:41we're going to miss out what God has for our lives.
- 6:44I mean, I think of this, all of our church, you know, it wasn't
- 6:47many years ago that our church was just 30 people or so, that's
- 6:51how things started. I mean, we go, 3040, I teach a
- 6:54great message. We go back down to 10, you know,
- 6:56that's how it was in the early days.
- 6:59And, and there was a Since though in those early days of
- 7:02this smaller group and you know we're just thinking oh it can't
- 7:05get better than this. And we're enjoying fellowship
- 7:08with one another and all that God wants to do.
- 7:10But occasionally there were those would say I love this so
- 7:14much. I don't want the church to grow
- 7:17and you're like what you don't want the church to grow that
- 7:21position alone is antithesis. It is the exact opposite of the
- 7:27love of God. The love of God.
- 7:30It is that the church grows that men and women they come out of
- 7:35the darkness and they come into the light that their sins are
- 7:37forgiven. It is God's will that the church
- 7:41grows not to stay in these little hole and, you know, as
- 7:44the church has grown. It's not just 100 little holy
- 7:47huddle. Now it's many and you have to
- 7:49guard yourself against just hanging out with other
- 7:52Christians talking Christian things and just having your own
- 7:55little holy Huddle's and not caring for the Lost.
- 8:00Even praying for the Lost, stepping into the lives of
- 8:05people that are outside of your regular group of friends, that's
- 8:10the Heart of Jesus. And that's where the early
- 8:13church is. I think, in some ways they're
- 8:15enjoying the ministry and the faithfulness of God in
- 8:19Jerusalem, and they're not necessarily in any kind of sin,
- 8:23but they're in a very dangerous place.
- 8:26They're not going backwards. Like, they're not in some state
- 8:29of Disobedience, they're not in a place of being prodigals, but
- 8:34they're also not pressing in and stepping out and they're just, I
- 8:39guess, you could say they're stagnant in some ways
- 8:42complacent. And let me just say I'm certain
- 8:45those words. Describe some of you today.
- 8:48Either here, listening to me downstairs on the radio online
- 8:52that you're just stagnant and complacent and you're content
- 8:57with where you are but not in a good way.
- 9:01God is reminding us today that he'll do whatever it takes to
- 9:04stir you up in love and good works.
- 9:07For some of you can just be a simple command that God wants to
- 9:10stir up and say okay, stir me up, Lord but others, it'll be
- 9:13circumstances for the early church.
- 9:15It was great, persecution. Notice with me, in verse 1 of
- 9:20chapter 8, it says, now Saul was consenting to his death at that
- 9:26time, a great persecution arose against the church, which was at
- 9:29Jerusalem, and they were all Goddard throughout the regions
- 9:32of Judea and Samaria except the apostles again.
- 9:38There are no chapter breaks, no verses in the original, Greek
- 9:41text. So this is going to read
- 9:43straight through the religious rulers, just stoned and murdered
- 9:47Stephen. The first martyr Jesus is
- 9:50standing to receive the first martyr in heaven and here they
- 9:54are Saul watching it. All says that he consented or he
- 9:59agreed, or he had a vote in the matter which many believe this
- 10:03is a prove that Paul is a young man was a part of the Sanhedrin,
- 10:08part of the religious rulers. We learned last time that they
- 10:11laid all the coats down before him and Saul's approving of it
- 10:14all. And this greatly affects him a
- 10:18greatly affects him. Saul is having to deal with the
- 10:22reality of everything that he heard.
- 10:25Everything he knows in the scriptures, everything that he's
- 10:27watching the final words of Stephen.
- 10:30It's all Opening to him, and what happens.
- 10:33The early church is experience up to this point.
- 10:35Great grace, they've experienced up to this point.
- 10:38Great power, they've experienced up to this point.
- 10:41Great pretense ananias and Sapphira and now they're
- 10:45experiencing great and widespread persecution and Satan
- 10:51the devil. Our enemy himself may try to use
- 10:54persecution to intimidate and scare us but God always uses it
- 11:00to spread the Gospel. It's always a Clarion call.
- 11:04Whenever pressure comes upon the church whenever difficulties
- 11:07come in, you know, that God is going to use those difficulties
- 11:12for the purposes of spreading the gospel, and it doesn't shut
- 11:16the gospel down as much as you would think the devil's learned
- 11:19that by now, it doesn't stop the gospel.
- 11:22I mean, you look at the history of the church today you and I
- 11:24are a part of the church because the church has withstood every
- 11:28single persecution it's ever faced.
- 11:31I mean, I look at it in the context of our own country and
- 11:34our own times in the last few years and there's been great
- 11:37pressure upon the church and great things to come against the
- 11:40church and man, listening to some Pastor these days.
- 11:43They make it sound like Jesus is a wimp.
- 11:45Oh, we've got to fight and stand up and we got to go and like,
- 11:48Jesus can't do it without us. He's just fine without you
- 11:51believe me. He is the king of kings and the
- 11:55Lord of lords, and he is the one building his church.
- 11:59And as you watch persecution, I I want you to be careful.
- 12:02As you reading the book of Acts or persecution all throughout
- 12:05church history. God has always used persecution
- 12:08and pressure to spread the gospel.
- 12:11It is never stopped the church. It only in boldin's.
- 12:15The church to press on to move forward with a singular purpose
- 12:22of the Gospel. That's the key.
- 12:25You want to be careful, not to adopt other things and that
- 12:28their methodologies, that would dilute the The power of the
- 12:32Gospel. What is the gospel?
- 12:34The gospel is the good news that your sins can be forgiven.
- 12:39That it puts you on the other end of the god, that loves you.
- 12:44That you can escape the Judgment in the wrath of God.
- 12:47Why? Because he loved you so much
- 12:49that he sent his only begotten son to die in your behalf and
- 12:53that if you will, repent of your sins today.
- 12:56Oh, by the way, the very beginning of the Gospel actually
- 12:58starts like this, you are Center separated from God, that is the
- 13:05condition of your life. Apart from God, or you could say
- 13:09it this way, the Bible puts it this way, we have all sinned and
- 13:13fallen short of the glory of God, and that you need to
- 13:17understand the wages of sin is death.
- 13:20But the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus, our
- 13:24lord that if you confess with your mouth, the Lord Jesus, and
- 13:27believe in your heart, that God raised him from the dead, you
- 13:29will be saved. If the gospel is more powerful
- 13:34than any other mechanism of change on the Earth today and
- 13:38Jesus is still saving Souls, if the church ever gets sidetracked
- 13:44on something other than the gospel.
- 13:46If the church ever tries to mix the gospel with something else,
- 13:52it dilutes its power and then the church becomes a laughing
- 13:55stock because the only Power of change Paul would even put it
- 13:58this way in Rome, he to the Romans he would tell them.
- 14:01The Romans are City. Rome was just a city of great,
- 14:04debauchery and sin, and Antichrist behavior.
- 14:08And what did Paul wrote to them? I am not ashamed of the gospel
- 14:12for it is the power of God unto salvation, for all, who believe
- 14:16the Jew first. And also, for the Greek, or the
- 14:19Gentile. That is God's heart.
- 14:21And that's what the early church is going to learn.
- 14:23They don't put up a fight, they just go with the flow of the
- 14:26spirit, they don't defend themselves, they just continue
- 14:30to do. What God's calling to do, even
- 14:32if it means death dying as Stephen did.
- 14:39So the devil tries to use persecution to smother God's
- 14:42work to dilute God's work to distract God's workers, but God
- 14:48will use it to build you up. You can jot it down again.
- 14:52In first John chapter 4 and verse 4 says you are of God
- 14:56little children and overcome them because he who is in you is
- 15:00greater Greater than he who is in the world, isn't that good?
- 15:04He who is in, you is greater than he who is in the world.
- 15:08And so God is going to use the same persecution to spread the
- 15:11gospel to build your faith and to encourage you, I think of the
- 15:14church in China before the cultural revolution in China, in
- 15:18the 1940s, some estimate, there were about 800 thousand,
- 15:23Believers in China and roughly 600 missionaries and then in the
- 15:281940s, everything changed. The government completely
- 15:32changed, they come down hard on Christians, they expel all the
- 15:35missionaries and the church has to go underground and of course,
- 15:39we all know not Underground. The underground church today has
- 15:44grown to hundreds of millions of Believers.
- 15:49And you know what? There are people in, this is
- 15:51something that might be humbling to you, but there are people in
- 15:54China right now, praying about coming to the u.s. to evangelize
- 15:58you and praying for our church, they look at the church in the
- 16:01west, and they go. What is wrong with them?
- 16:04Where have they gone, what have they done?
- 16:06And there are people, you know, the underground Church in India,
- 16:09the underground Church in North Korea, the church in South
- 16:13Korea, the church underground Church in China, they are
- 16:15praying for us in many ways sending missionaries to the
- 16:19states. In order to evangelize the
- 16:22United States because they see such a great need Among Us
- 16:29That's why even though persecution is horrible, it's
- 16:32inevitable. Jesus said that in this world,
- 16:36you will have tribulation but respond with good cheer because
- 16:41he's overcome the world and even though it comes, it never hurts
- 16:44the church in the long run. God is always working Among Us.
- 16:49Persecution does to the church. What wind does to seed it
- 16:55scatters it only to produce a greater Harvest.
- 16:59If you like to write in your Bibles in there in verse 1, I
- 17:02want you to circle the phrase, great persecution, great
- 17:06persecution. And that the end in verse 1
- 17:10toward the end, it says scattered circle, the word
- 17:13scattered and then you can write a little arrow between the two
- 17:17because great persecution leads to a scattering, a moving God
- 17:23uses disruptions in our lives. To move us from one place to
- 17:28another. Again, I think of the last few
- 17:30years of very hard, very challenging, lots of decisions,
- 17:33lots of division, and then, you sort of, get out of the last
- 17:36couple years and everybody's going, I just wanted to go back
- 17:39to normal. I just wanted to go back to
- 17:40normal. It will never go back to normal.
- 17:42God doesn't want you to live in normal.
- 17:45He's taking you in a new direction.
- 17:47There's a new fault. He's taking us forward, not
- 17:51backward. And he's taking us forward
- 17:53before the gospel. That's God's heart for you.
- 17:57Even some of you might be clinging, I wish you would go
- 17:59back to the way it was. It will never go back to the way
- 18:01it was. God is doing a new thing among
- 18:03us using the steady steadfastness of his word that
- 18:09never changes. The God is moving us forward,
- 18:12and he wants us to participate. You use, whatever it is a stir
- 18:15you up. He won't let you settle and I
- 18:18want you to think of the persecution just here with
- 18:20Steven a chapter 7, the religious Rulers, like they
- 18:24felt, I believe with Jesus, they have just taken out one, strong
- 18:28voice, this man, Stephen they've wiped out Stephen and silenced
- 18:34one voice. But little did they realize that
- 18:38murdering Stephen? They were Awakening.
- 18:41Many more voices to take his place so many replace the one.
- 18:47And Saul here is consenting to it.
- 18:50All Saul doesn't know how his life is going to go.
- 18:55You got to remember that. We have the advantage.
- 18:57We know how it's going to go down.
- 18:59We know there's a chapter 9. We know Saul becomes Paul.
- 19:02We have that knowledge, but Saul doesn't know what's going on in
- 19:05his life and the church doesn't know, either, they don't know
- 19:08that this guy that's coming after them.
- 19:10Wreaking havoc in their lives is going to get saved and write
- 19:13most of the New Testament. They solved doesn't know that.
- 19:17This group is going from Judea Samaria in this persecution,
- 19:21that it will be him. A few years later that is used
- 19:25to start the worldwide Mission with a guy by the name of
- 19:28Barnabas. He doesn't know any of that yet.
- 19:31He is living with this anger and frustration against the church
- 19:36single-handedly wanting to take it out.
- 19:38Notice in verse 2. It says devout.
- 19:41Men carried Stephen to his burial and they make great
- 19:44lamentation over him. So it's a very sad.
- 19:47A time, very challenging, very difficult.
- 19:51And in this sad challenging difficult time verse 3.
- 19:54As for Seoul, he made Havoc of the church entering every house
- 20:01dragging off men and women committing them to prison.
- 20:07Again, if you like to ride in your Bibles and verse 3 circle,
- 20:09the word Havoc, it means injury isyou know to injure someone it
- 20:15also means ravaging someone It speaks to us of like a wild
- 20:20brutal animal. That's how saws acting right
- 20:22now. He's acting like an animal
- 20:25killing imprisoning intimidating.
- 20:28I mean, he's very mean. Here dragging out women innocent
- 20:33men and women who have done nothing wrong, but if gone
- 20:36against his religious ideology he's single-handedly.
- 20:41Wiping people out throwing him in prison.
- 20:44After they've I mean this church.
- 20:47Has been through great persecution from the very
- 20:49beginning in order to step into following Messiah.
- 20:54You'll recall, we learn this all throughout our study in Hebrews,
- 20:57they had to leave everything and everyone they needed to make a
- 21:03higher decision of Love toward Christ, no matter the cost.
- 21:09It's a cost that not all of us. Although some of us have paid
- 21:12parts of this family is turned on us, upset with us, won't
- 21:16involve on I get that some of us have experience on a smaller
- 21:20scale. The great pain of people turning
- 21:23against you because of your faith.
- 21:24But here is a group of people, the very Foundation, is they
- 21:28lost it all? Then they come together and it's
- 21:31no, it's no surprise that they would want to hang out with one
- 21:34another and encourage one, another and share, what little
- 21:37they have with each other and some of them sold land.
- 21:40And they gave all the proceeds because this is all they had.
- 21:44And I know that many of you and your church family and your
- 21:47church life, whether you experience it now or in the near
- 21:50future, we have found that some relationships in the body of
- 21:54Christ, can be closer than even our own blood relations, because
- 21:58there's a spiritual connection that isn't always shared with
- 22:02those that are closest to us. That's them.
- 22:04They lost a very Stephen was a stellar, man.
- 22:08He was someone that that was used greatly of God.
- 22:13A faithful man. He was, you could say their
- 22:16spokesperson not one of the Apostles, but another generation
- 22:20and the reward is they saw another one of the men that they
- 22:23love like Jesus viciously murdered.
- 22:26In this case, he was stoned to death, which is a horrible way
- 22:30to die. And salt takes advantage of
- 22:33their weakness. It doesn't make sense.
- 22:35You would think when you're hurting, you get immediate
- 22:37Comfort, but there are those that like to take advantage of
- 22:40your weakness. Unfortunately.
- 22:43And so you're in a weekend, stay in there.
- 22:44Just like, man, the enemies just pressing in harder and harder.
- 22:47Some of you might even have asked this question, when will
- 22:50it let up or as we read in the psalm?
- 22:53Today, Psalm 86, hey, I called out to the Lord in my trouble.
- 22:58Isn't it trouble that often calls causes you to cry out to
- 23:01God? And you know, Saul here he is.
- 23:05This bothered him. I believe the rest of his life.
- 23:09This this scenario his attitude in this brief part of his life,
- 23:13bothered him, we know because he mentions it many times later on
- 23:17in his writings. It's one of the reasons why I
- 23:20believe when Paul came to that place where he's writing to the
- 23:24Corinthians and he pleads with God, three times to remove that
- 23:27thorn in his side. I believe part of that
- 23:30difficulty in his life was regret over his past.
- 23:34That he could just never Shake how bad he was and how he
- 23:39treated people, all in the name of God.
- 23:42Now, for some of you, you came from a very difficult background
- 23:44like me. I got saved later in life.
- 23:47Lived a very rebellious life against God and those around me.
- 23:50And and I can relate to that thought because there are many
- 23:53things that I regret, I don't dwell on them, but they just
- 23:56come back and it becomes a real battle in my mind.
- 23:59A real spiritual Battle of just having to deal with the
- 24:02realities of my past. Sometimes it may come out like
- 24:05this. You may look at your past and
- 24:07you go, you know what? If I knew then what I know now,
- 24:10I wouldn't have made you ever think that way that's the, but
- 24:13think about in a heaviness of like, oh, it's so much.
- 24:17So Paul would give to us some of the most encouraging scriptures
- 24:22on how to deal with our past. How can we not think of Romans
- 24:268:1 there is therefore now, no condemnation for those that are
- 24:32in Christ, I think of Again, where Paul was writing to the
- 24:35Corinthians and he said there is the that you are now a new
- 24:40creation in. Christ, old things have passed
- 24:43away and all things have become new, you know, Paul, he dealt
- 24:47with this his whole life and First Corinthians, I'm we're not
- 24:49going to this could be a good Bible study in and of itself.
- 24:52But when won't develop it I'll just give you the scriptures in
- 24:55First Corinthians chapter 15 and verse 9.
- 24:58He mentions his unworthiness. In Galatians, chapter 1 and
- 25:03verse 13. Paul looks back and he admits
- 25:05that he tried to destroy the church.
- 25:09When he wrote in Galatians chapter 5 of The Works of the
- 25:13flesh, he didn't mention them all.
- 25:16But one of the ones that he mentioned was an outburst of
- 25:19Wrath, we learn in Acts chapter 9, that he was an angry man.
- 25:23He would Breathe In and Out threats and murder and here we
- 25:27see in verse 3, he creates Havoc among innocent And then later at
- 25:33toward the end of his life when he's writing, and he's just so
- 25:36close to seeing the Lord himself.
- 25:39You know, he describes himself as the chief of sinners.
- 25:43Now, Paul saw some centers in his life and experience a lot of
- 25:48sin as he went with the gospel into various parts of the world.
- 25:52But as he sitting down to encourage young Timothy
- 25:55considering Timothy's Ministry, having to consider his own, his
- 25:59conclusion is I've seen a lot of sinners in my life, but I'm the
- 26:03worst. I'm the worst.
- 26:06And today God would remind you even as you assess your own
- 26:10life, that there is no condemnation for you.
- 26:13Perhaps like Paul your past bothers, you.
- 26:17But you need to move forward. Trusting that God has a new
- 26:20Fresh work for you. You can't live in the past.
- 26:24Here are Saul of Tarsus is on the, he's before he still living
- 26:29in Rebellion against God. And he's both physically and
- 26:32emotionally hurtful to people with no shame, no shame.
- 26:38I don't want you to get in the picture, I don't want you to get
- 26:41the in your mind, you know, when it says the persecution is
- 26:44coming, saw and others are coming as a church and the
- 26:47church scatters and they leave Jerusalem.
- 26:49I don't want you to associate that with just moving to another
- 26:52city, like like they have a you Haul truck and they're packing
- 26:55up everything in boxes and honey call the Mover because
- 26:58everything's ready and we'll head off to a new house.
- 27:01You need to understand what we're dealing with here.
- 27:03First of all, this is a group of people that gave up everything
- 27:06to follow Christ, but still had to live in the same community,
- 27:10so they had nothing to start with.
- 27:12And now, you know, if it's just about a year later, they have
- 27:15about a years of life, but they're living at the poverty
- 27:17level. They're living in, desperation,
- 27:20the only encourage them, they have is with other believers and
- 27:23then they have to leave. Give back to reality and they're
- 27:25whatever job they can. They can muster up whatever
- 27:30little income. They have whatever little things
- 27:32they were able to. Now persecution comes and they
- 27:35just leave everything they run away.
- 27:37They're running away for their lives.
- 27:40They're not just moving to another state.
- 27:42They're not just moving on for a more comfortable life.
- 27:45They are living and leaving for their lives.
- 27:50And notice when they did, it says in verse 4 there, for those
- 27:55who were scattered when everywhere.
- 27:58What does your Bible say? They went everywhere, preaching
- 28:01the word and that's all that God would have from you for you to
- 28:05be a witness. That's the work of the holy
- 28:07spirit in your life and they went preaching the word.
- 28:10What else do they have to give? They have no possessions.
- 28:13They have no status, they have nothing.
- 28:16So they come into a new area Judea and Samaria.
- 28:20Which is now another step down. Unfortunately, in the
- 28:23prejudicial minds of the Jews of Jerusalem.
- 28:27And they've got nothing. But the word they have nothing,
- 28:32but the word it reminded me. You know, how, during the last
- 28:34couple years, we had a lot of people leave move away from the
- 28:37church, move out of state, and it mostly was a political
- 28:40decision. I don't like all the politics of
- 28:42Colorado. So I'm going to move to another
- 28:44state, and that'll be better there.
- 28:47Well, listen, God may use politics to move you, but I'll
- 28:49tell you this. This, when you get to that new
- 28:51state, preach the word that's your purpose.
- 28:55It's not to find a more comfortable place for you or
- 28:57ideas that chain. I mean, if you've been around
- 29:00for a while and you've seen political Cycles, come and go,
- 29:03you know, that things change a things change all around us, but
- 29:08the word of God never changes. And so, the church has to be on
- 29:13Mission. You don't have a choice.
- 29:16I mean, in real way, you do have a choice, but here's the choice.
- 29:20Idiots or Disobedience. And so when you think of it that
- 29:23way you just like you don't really have a choice to disobey.
- 29:27It's God's will for you when your scattered, you know, maybe
- 29:30it's a job, change. Maybe it is some kind of
- 29:32decision. I don't want to be here anymore.
- 29:34Whatever it is fine. When you land and you guys that
- 29:37moved away, you probably clicked me off.
- 29:39Don't click me off right now wherever you landed.
- 29:42This is God's will for your life treats.
- 29:45The word. It's not just a pastor.
- 29:47You look at that and you I know some would go.
- 29:49I'm not a preacher. These weren't preachers.
- 29:52These were moms dads kids. It's not great.
- 29:56Not only that. I don't forget, don't miss in
- 29:58the end of verse 1. These aren't in the apostles
- 30:02because the apostles stayed in Jerusalem, they saw their
- 30:05calling, they needed to be there so that they might continue to
- 30:09minister to the fledgling Church in new Believers in Jerusalem
- 30:12that would stay behind. But for those that were
- 30:14scattered, They're just people like you and me there's a
- 30:18responsibility for us to be faithful with the word of God,
- 30:22which is one more reason why you should read your Bible and pray
- 30:25every day. What do you have to give accept
- 30:28that? What you've taken in in every
- 30:31sphere of society? Don't look down on where God has
- 30:36you, where you're working, where you're living, God has you there
- 30:41on purpose so that he might use you?
- 30:45In other people's lives, even if where you are comes because of
- 30:49pressure or persecution. It's so amazing to me because a
- 30:55couple things with Saul here and we'll develop this much more
- 30:58when we get to acts 9, but there's a couple things three
- 31:01things in particular. Number once, all reminds us,
- 31:06Saul reminds us that the grace and the love of God is
- 31:10sufficient to break through all the barriers of hate and anger
- 31:14that so many Used to hide and protect their hearts from the
- 31:17truth. So many of the people that are
- 31:19angry and and hateful are just in a position of protection, not
- 31:25wanting God to be anywhere near the softness of their heart.
- 31:30And you got to keep praying for them because who would have
- 31:32thought if we didn't have chapter 9, what we would think
- 31:35the end for Saul would be. I don't know how many of us
- 31:37would Purdue all the dudes going to get saved and radically
- 31:39changed the church forever. I don't know, any of us would
- 31:42have come to that conclusion, we'd probably start praying,
- 31:45take them out, Lord, take them out, get rid of them, he's
- 31:48hurting us. He just tried my mom and threw
- 31:50her into prison and that would be a natural response.
- 31:54But God had a plan for soul and God has a plan for the people.
- 31:57You're praying for right now, too.
- 31:59The people that are hard-hearted coming against you, the those
- 32:04that are in Rebellion against God and we must guard our hearts
- 32:08as like, I like to tell people in the ministry here, I like to
- 32:10remind us that we need to cultivate a soft heart while we
- 32:14have a thick skin. We need to keep a thick skin and
- 32:18a soft heart. And usually the opposite
- 32:20happens. We have a hard heart and then we
- 32:22have a soft skin. So everything, bothers us.
- 32:24And only hardens are hard, but it's God's heart for us.
- 32:27It's God's desire for us. To cultivate and keep a soft
- 32:31heart toward the loss, toward the marginalized, toward the
- 32:35outcast, toward those, that are spewing out, anger and hatred,
- 32:40because who knows? Who knows?
- 32:43The next person that's born again and God radically uses the
- 32:47change. Secondly, I want you to notice
- 32:50how God uses Saul to move the church in in number one, or at
- 32:55least the first way that God moves his moves.
- 32:57The church is that God for Versus the church out of a place
- 33:01of complacency using Soul. He isn't going to allow the
- 33:06church to stay in Jerusalem. It was his will to go to Judea
- 33:09and Samaria. So he uses saw this madman in
- 33:12this season of his life to move them and force them to move.
- 33:16And I'm reminded that difficulties always move us,
- 33:21difficulties, always move us. You want to be careful which way
- 33:25your move because God is always going to move you toward him not
- 33:30away from him. And then the next way I see how
- 33:33God used Saul is he forced the church to leave their homes?
- 33:38Leave. What little possessions they
- 33:39have and become absolutely dependent upon him again.
- 33:46I don't know if you've noticed in your life, I certainly have
- 33:48in mind. The more comfortable and easy,
- 33:51my life is the less I'm inclined to depend on God.
- 33:57It's in trouble that we cry out to him.
- 33:59It's in difficulty that we're broken and we are humbled, but
- 34:03when things are going well, we don't have a tendency to press
- 34:06into the deeper things of God. So God uses this time to press
- 34:10them and to move them. And then as they go out,
- 34:15preaching verse 5, we meet Phillip will study him.
- 34:18Next time he goes down to the city of Samaria specifically and
- 34:22notice what he does. He preaches Christ, he doesn't
- 34:26complain. What's going on in Jerusalem,
- 34:28you know, none of them. They don't, they're not going
- 34:30around. I can't believe what's
- 34:31happening. Look, what they did to us.
- 34:33There's no complaining no murmuring just Ministry.
- 34:37And man that would be good for us to learn just serving the
- 34:41lord abiding in Christ trusting him.
- 34:45Not becoming like one author. I came across one author.
- 34:49Reading not too long ago where he described the whole category
- 34:53of unbelieving believers. Where?
- 34:57Yes, we have a relationship with God, but we practically in our
- 35:00lives live. Like, we're unbelievers, like,
- 35:03we don't trust God, or what? He said, this, what he said it's
- 35:05going to happen this. How it's going to go down.
- 35:08Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world, he was in,
- 35:10you is greater than he was in the world, and it's like, yes,
- 35:12Lord. Yes.
- 35:13Lord, I trust you even in those times where it's difficult and
- 35:18when it's hard, I don't know exactly.
- 35:23I'm not sure what God is going to do to stir you up.
- 35:28I don't know what it's going to take to stir you up.
- 35:31I don't know what it's going to take for you to fulfill the will
- 35:34of God for your life for you to go from Glory go.
- 35:38I don't know. I don't personally know.
- 35:41I'm not sure what it's going to take for you to step away from
- 35:43your comfort and ease. To keep you from settling down
- 35:47in some area of comfort. I'm not sure what it's going to
- 35:51take for you to step up and take a step of Faith or be counted
- 35:54for Jesus, but I do know this of all the things I don't know.
- 35:59I do know this, God will do whatever it takes to stir you up
- 36:06in these last days to serve him until he returns and so be open
- 36:12Church. Don't wait for some Katastrophe
- 36:17to stir you up. Choose today.
- 36:21Count the cost and follow Christ.
- 36:23Amen. So father, thank you again for
- 36:26the word as we learn about the early church being stirred up.
- 36:29There's so much more that you have for us.
- 36:33Forgive us. God for settling for lesser
- 36:35things. I think that's a big deal when
- 36:37it comes to comfort and ease lesser things.
- 36:41Diluting, the gospel. Leaning on the arm of the flesh.
- 36:48In the work, you want to accomplish in the spirit,
- 36:51neglecting God to turn to you. And leaning on.
- 36:57Our own thoughts and ideas and our own systems and whatever it
- 37:00is. I just pray, you would settle
- 37:03our hearts today because I know that some right now are in the
- 37:06process of being stirred up and it doesn't feel good.
- 37:10It the circumstances aren't good.
- 37:14And I pray you'd give the needed string.
- 37:17The needed stability. And even bring back some in your
- 37:22church. Today to a steadfastness of
- 37:24following you in Jesus name. Amen.
- 37:29We pray that you've been encouraged by this Bible.
