Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Netanyahu orders 'thorough review' of foreign flights into Israel
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: There's going to be a very intense investigation. Right now,
- 0:06Speaker 1: nobody honestly knows was he tied to a foreign entity
- 0:10Speaker 1: or did he act on his own? The thing is,
- 0:13Speaker 1: he acted. It was a terrorist act. He tried to
- 0:16Speaker 1: kill everybody on that plane. He would have died, too,
- 0:19Speaker 1: but he didn't care.
- 0:21Speaker 2: So this morning, new information about the radicalized co-pilot who
- 0:25Speaker 2: tried hijacking a fly Dubai plane after hitting the captain
- 0:28Speaker 2: with a crash axe. We now know the suspect was
- 0:32Speaker 2: barred from flying with Oman over his extremist views. Now,
- 0:36Speaker 2: all foreign flights to Israel are under review as the
- 0:39Speaker 2: hero captain who unlocked the cockpit door shares the details.
- 0:45Speaker 3: It just was a normal flight and.
- 0:51Speaker 3: The co-pilot offered, I mean, he demanded, not demanded, but
- 0:56Speaker 3: he wanted to pray. After, I think, I would say
- 0:59Speaker 3: about four or five minutes, there was a big blow
- 1:04Speaker 3: to the back of my head. And that's when I
- 1:06Speaker 3: realized that it's not the aircraft, it's the other guy
- 1:09Speaker 3: who was in the cockpit with me.
- 1:12Speaker 2: So, former Deputy National Security Advisor Steve Yates joins us now. Steve,
- 1:15Speaker 2: we find out that the co-pilot, he was not allowed
- 1:18Speaker 2: to fly because he was kicked out of the flight
- 1:20Speaker 2: to Dubai. Excuse me, he was kicked out after eight months,
- 1:24Speaker 2: removed from his previous job at Oman's National Airline because
- 1:27Speaker 2: of his extremist views.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Why is that not a red flag that if somebody
- 1:33Speaker 2: wants to hire him in America or London or Australia
- 1:37Speaker 2: or the UAE, why is that not the red flag
- 1:41Speaker 2: that stops him from getting that job?
- 1:44Speaker 4: Well, Brian, that's exactly right. And, of course, it is
- 1:46Speaker 4: a red flag. And it's basically an embarrassing failure of
- 1:50Speaker 4: screening among countries that know that this is a red
- 1:53Speaker 4: flag and that there is a very, very real threat
- 1:56Speaker 4: of radical Islam. The UAE is one of the few
- 2:00Speaker 4: majority Muslim countries that is very explicit about outlawing even
- 2:04Speaker 4: political Islam, like the Muslim Brotherhood. something that is, for instance,
- 2:09Speaker 4: not restricted in the U.K., and they have their own problems. So,
- 2:13Speaker 4: this is just a massive wake-up call. It's an absolute
- 2:16Speaker 4: miracle this was not a mass casualty event. What we
- 2:19Speaker 4: have heard is that the target was the major international
- 2:22Speaker 4: airport in Tel Aviv, and that he had flown before
- 2:26Speaker 4: and decided not to take down an earlier flight because
- 2:29Speaker 4: he knew someone on board, allegedly. So, we have probably
- 2:32Speaker 4: tempted fate a number of times. This just is a deep,
- 2:35Speaker 4: deep reminder. With the Abraham Accords October 7th coming up
- 2:39Speaker 4: and the Iran conflict ongoing, we have to be on
- 2:42Speaker 4: high alert, and these homeland things need to be buttoned
- 2:44Speaker 4: down much, much more.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Again, you want to respect all religions. So this guy says,
- 2:47Speaker 2: I'm going to go pray. So the pilot says, OK,
- 2:49Speaker 2: I'm going to give you respect. I'm not going to
- 2:51Speaker 2: look at you. You just pray on your own. He
- 2:52Speaker 2: ends up with an ax in the back of his head.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Just a note for everyone at home.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Meanwhile, U.S.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Air Force is removing all B-1 bombers from a British
- 3:01Speaker 2: air base because of a targeted terror plot. Why do
- 3:05Speaker 2: we have that reaction to pull them back? Did we
- 3:07Speaker 2: not need them there?
- 3:09Speaker 4: Well, of course, only the president and his secretary of
- 3:12Speaker 4: war will know exactly what the answer is, whether those
- 3:15Speaker 4: kinds of means were needed. They had been used in
- 3:19Speaker 4: earlier parts of the Iran campaign, so it could be
- 3:22Speaker 4: part of a rotation. But also, it just seems awfully coincident.
- 3:26Speaker 4: with what seems to be a pretty significant homeland failure
- 3:29Speaker 4: in the U.K., why keep them there if you don't
- 3:32Speaker 4: have to keep them there? And the United States has
- 3:33Speaker 4: lots of options to be able to strike at distance
- 3:36Speaker 4: without detection. Those are not the only tools we need.
- 3:39Speaker 4: But it does seem coincident that we have this— there are
- 3:42Speaker 4: two significant terrorist plots in the U.K. that they might
- 3:47Speaker 4: as well just go ahead and move them.
- 3:48Speaker 2: All right. The Pentagon says we acknowledge now that all U.S.
- 3:51Speaker 2: bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford were redeployed to
- 3:56Speaker 2: their home stations.
- 3:57Speaker 3: All right.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Now to Iran. Huge story. You can't overstate it. Iran's
- 4:02Speaker 2: National Security Advisor has warned of the rapidly deteriorating conditions
- 4:07Speaker 2: in their economy and has plunged the country into one
- 4:10Speaker 2: of the most difficult periods in Iran history. And also this,
- 4:14Speaker 2: on the heels of a report their oil minister, after
- 4:17Speaker 2: warning that things were so bad because of a basically
- 4:20Speaker 2: unable to move oil out of their country or in,
- 4:23Speaker 2: has resigned. There are more and more signs of unrest
- 4:27Speaker 2: within that country, and you can see this video on
- 4:29Speaker 2: social media today. What are you thinking, Steve?
- 4:33Speaker 4: Well, I have thought for months that our military has
- 4:36Speaker 4: been more effective at keeping things safe on the waterways
- 4:41Speaker 4: than a lot of commercial reporting was indicating. And the
- 4:46Speaker 4: Iranian forces that engage in economic terrorism will shoot at
- 4:49Speaker 4: some of these vessels, but there's not a lot of
- 4:51Speaker 4: evidence of them having much effect other than panic. So
- 4:54Speaker 4: we've been living through panic prices and panic rates. perceptions
- 4:57Speaker 4: of the security environment, what this tells me is that
- 5:00Speaker 4: the maximum economic pressure that the administration is putting forward
- 5:03Speaker 4: is real. And we're at that point where do— is there action,
- 5:07Speaker 4: whether by us, together with our allies, or just by
- 5:10Speaker 4: our allies, who all have just cause, having been hit
- 5:13Speaker 4: in all of this, to hit the IRGC? That is
- 5:17Speaker 4: the tipping point where the Iranian people could maybe have
- 5:20Speaker 4: their say. But the IRGC is not going to negotiate.
- 5:23Speaker 2: And we shouldn't, because it's not worth the time. We
- 5:25Speaker 2: just continue to put pressure. Thanks so much, Steve Yates.
- 5:29Speaker 2: We're going to keep our eye on this.
