- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst. Not So Fast, my friends.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst. Now,
- 0:20Speaker 2: it's interesting. We're coming off a Monday night game, but
- 0:22Speaker 2: it almost felt like two games, Paul.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it felt like a two-act play.
- 0:25Speaker 4: In the pregame, the 2005 team was at September 25, 2006.
- 0:30Speaker 4: The block punt by Steve Gleason. Drew Brees was earlier
- 0:33Speaker 4: on the Dan Patrick Show. That felt like a celebration.
- 0:36Speaker 4: If you're under 25, I bet you learned a lot
- 0:38Speaker 4: about Katrina, the Saints, Drew Brees, and Steve Gleason. And
- 0:42Speaker 4: if you're over 25, that was like a time machine pregame.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that was such an impactful sports event. Now,
- 0:49Speaker 2: the game afterwards went the exact opposite way for the Saints.
- 0:52Speaker 3: And we always worry about that.
- 0:53Speaker 4: You have so much pregame emotion, pregame action, like will
- 0:56Speaker 4: the team lay an egg? I don't think it's the Saints' fault.
- 0:59Speaker 4: It's not like they didn't show up. They just got
- 1:01Speaker 4: outplayed a little bit by one guy.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Well, yesterday's not so fast. I picked the Saints because
- 1:05Speaker 2: I thought the emotion would carry them to a victory.
- 1:07Speaker 3: You were feel-good picking.
- 1:09Speaker 2: But I had this other stat about Bajon Robinson on primetime.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I'm like, well, maybe he's unstoppable on primetime. But I
- 1:15Speaker 2: thought the Saints would know that and maybe... put a
- 1:18Speaker 2: few more guys in the box to stop Bijan Robinson.
- 1:20Speaker 2: It was the exact opposite. From play one, this guy
- 1:23Speaker 2: dominated the whole night. Falcons roll.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Yeah, 45-24, not that close. The running game was great
- 1:29Speaker 4: all day. Bijan broke that first one. And he has
- 1:31Speaker 4: that thing at the end of his runs where he
- 1:33Speaker 4: looks like he's going about 80%, like a track runner.
- 1:35Speaker 4: And then Brian Robinson Jr., their backup running back, he
- 1:38Speaker 4: took over and did well. But I think the big
- 1:40Speaker 4: picture for the Falcons is, let's say you didn't watch
- 1:43Speaker 4: any Falcons football and just tuned in last night.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Wow, what a good team. They look fantastic. They're great.
- 1:47Speaker 4: But two weeks ago, three weeks ago, they were the
- 1:49Speaker 4: worst offense in the NFL, albeit with third-string and maybe
- 1:52Speaker 4: four-string quarterbacks.
- 1:53Speaker 2: But we've seen this before with Atlanta, where they play
- 1:55Speaker 2: really well in primetime, and then they blow it in
- 1:58Speaker 2: all their other games. Is the difference Michael Penix? Can
- 2:01Speaker 2: Michael Penix make that significant of a difference?
- 2:03Speaker 4: I like how he protected the guilty by not putting
- 2:05Speaker 4: pictures of the backup quarterbacks.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Poor Cooper Rush.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Poor Cooper Rush. But, you know, Penix looked protected. That's
- 2:12Speaker 4: one thing that stood out. Again, Dan brought this up earlier.
- 2:15Speaker 4: He's not a running quarterback. He wasn't at Washington. He
- 2:18Speaker 4: was a little bit in Indiana. But he's a guy
- 2:20Speaker 4: who rolls left, makes plays. He loves him from Drake London.
- 2:24Speaker 4: He's targeting him all day.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Well... Their offensive line has been good and is good.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Pro football focus always grades them in the top ten.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So I think that's the key. They're a good run-blocking
- 2:33Speaker 2: offensive line. All you need is adequate quarterback play. It's
- 2:36Speaker 2: not like Michael Penix did that much last night. It
- 2:38Speaker 2: was all B. John Robinson and Brian Robinson.
- 2:40Speaker 3: And no one's ever said he can't play. It's like
- 2:42Speaker 3: we're waiting for him to play.
- 2:43Speaker 4: When they drafted him and they had cousins, people were like,
- 2:45Speaker 4: why are they taking a guy with a bunch of
- 2:47Speaker 4: knee surgeries out of college? And for the past two years,
- 2:50Speaker 4: it looked like a mistake. But if you'd watched, again,
- 2:52Speaker 4: last night, you're like, Oh, they figured. I know it's
- 2:55Speaker 4: one night, but it looks like the Falcons have figured
- 2:57Speaker 4: it out.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Well, two nights because they beat the Packers last Thursday.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I'm worried, though, Paul. I think this is an aberration.
- 3:04Speaker 3: It's a nighttime aberration.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Nighttime aberration. I think the Packers and Saints might be bad,
- 3:09Speaker 2: which I think the New Orleans Saints, I was into them.
- 3:12Speaker 2: They're 1-3 now. There's a chance they are really bad.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Okay, you could make the case that Michael Penix might
- 3:17Speaker 4: not be a great quarterback or maybe always good but
- 3:20Speaker 4: not great because of knee concerns, but the defense was good.
- 3:23Speaker 4: They hit Tyler Shuck 12 times. That's a good sign.
- 3:27Speaker 4: The running game looks fantastic. Backup and starting running back
- 3:30Speaker 4: look great. So, like you said, if Michael Penix can
- 3:33Speaker 4: play B-level quarterback play for the next couple years, now,
- 3:37Speaker 4: I don't know if that's going to get him a
- 3:38Speaker 4: $ 300 million contract, but he may be one of those
- 3:40Speaker 4: guys who's good.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah, but you might have thought the same thing about
- 3:44Speaker 2: Atlanta last year. Can you really trust this team?
- 3:46Speaker 5: Well.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Well, you know, actually, I would say historically you don't
- 3:50Speaker 4: trust the Falcons, but they made some mistakes. I don't
- 3:52Speaker 4: think bringing Tua in to start this year was good
- 3:54Speaker 4: for anybody, but it was like they were trying out everything,
- 3:56Speaker 4: kicking the tires on everything. But if you find Penix,
- 4:00Speaker 4: and Penix is not a kid. He's not even close
- 4:01Speaker 4: to 22. He's closer to 30. If you could find
- 4:04Speaker 4: a guy like him, Bijan Robinson is still on a
- 4:06Speaker 4: rookie deal.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Not for long. Not for long, by the way.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Okay, I'm going to do a keep it friendly here.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I'm saying right now, I'll bet you the Panthers beat
- 4:15Speaker 2: the Falcons for this division.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Oh, that's a tough one.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Come on, Paul. Dive in.
- 4:20Speaker 4: I'll take the Falcons because I think that their defense
- 4:22Speaker 4: is better than the Panthers' defense.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Now, the Panthers look fantastic on offense.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You're right. The Panthers' defense is not good.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Can we hinge this bet, this keep-it-friendly bet, Panthers versus Falcons,
- 4:33Speaker 4: on Michael Penix being healthy in December?
- 4:35Speaker 3: No.
- 4:35Speaker 2: There's no hinging.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I can't hinge my bet?
- 4:37Speaker 2: No, you can't hinge your bet. I mean, the odds
- 4:40Speaker 2: do favor the Panthers a little bit. Now, the Panthers'
- 4:42Speaker 2: defense is decimated by injury. Terrible. And by the way,
- 4:46Speaker 2: two weeks ago I would have picked the Saints. But
- 4:48Speaker 2: the Falcons, I've got to tell you right now, they
- 4:50Speaker 2: have a tough schedule coming up. They play during the day,
- 4:53Speaker 2: and they're a different team for some reason.
- 4:54Speaker 4: I think the Falcons play the Panthers twice in December.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Bijan Robinson is licking his chops. Brian Robinson is licking
- 5:00Speaker 4: his chops against that defense.
- 5:02Speaker 2: We'll see. We'll see. You're overrating Atlanta's defense. There you go. Yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I mean, upcoming Ravens, we'll see about their quarterback situation.
- 5:10Speaker 2: But then the Bears, Niners, tough.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Sunday night could be a playoff. There's our bet. Week
- 5:15Speaker 3: 18 at the Panthers for the division, likely.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yeah, probably at 8-9. Okay, on the other side of
- 5:20Speaker 2: the ball, New Orleans really laid an egg last night. Now,
- 5:24Speaker 2: my problem with New Orleans is not their quarterback. I
- 5:26Speaker 2: think their defensive line stinks. and I think their offensive
- 5:30Speaker 2: line was not good last night. They couldn't run the ball.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Listen to this stat. 50 yards on 19 carries. That's
- 5:35Speaker 2: an indictment not of the running backs, but of the
- 5:37Speaker 2: offensive line and the play calling. They cannot establish a
- 5:40Speaker 2: ground game.
- 5:41Speaker 4: They also need a younger running back. Alvin Kamara, I
- 5:43Speaker 4: can't believe he's still there, but good for him. He
- 5:45Speaker 4: had a really good career. Tyler Shuck had a really
- 5:47Speaker 4: nice September, a really nice December. They think they found Ish,
- 5:52Speaker 4: their quarterback.
- 5:52Speaker 3: That wasn't so good. But if you know he's passing
- 5:56Speaker 3: the ball, he becomes a different quarterback.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Well, actually, okay, last night, they knew they couldn't run
- 6:00Speaker 2: the ball and they were trailing. He still moved the
- 6:02Speaker 2: ball pretty effectively.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I think they found a quarterback, now the quarterback. You know,
- 6:06Speaker 4: the Saints, it probably won't work out this year. Now,
- 6:10Speaker 4: the good news is that that division, you can win
- 6:12Speaker 4: three in a row and be in first place, and
- 6:14Speaker 4: everyone can come back to earth. But it does feel
- 6:16Speaker 4: like bigger picture. Saints were that cute pick in August.
- 6:21Speaker 4: After last night, people are going to bail.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Oh, that's right or wrong, people are going to think.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I'm bailing. But they're 1-3. Why would you not bail?
- 6:26Speaker 2: They didn't show up at home on the 20th anniversary
- 6:29Speaker 2: of the Katrina game. That makes no sense. There's no way. Actually,
- 6:33Speaker 2: last night was such a bad loss. I'll even go
- 6:35Speaker 2: a step further. I think Kellen Moore is all of
- 6:37Speaker 2: a sudden on the hot seat in New Orleans.
- 6:38Speaker 3: This early?
- 6:39Speaker 2: Yes. I think in New Orleans, that was a huge loss.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I know locally, they were really disappointed, and it was
- 6:45Speaker 2: a bad sign. Paul, if you can't stop the run
- 6:48Speaker 2: and you can't run the ball, you're not winning games
- 6:50Speaker 2: in the NFL.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Well, yeah, but in that division, you don't have to
- 6:52Speaker 4: do either. You could just be at eight wins. This
- 6:55Speaker 4: is a tough one. Let's do helmet stickers. I want
- 6:57Speaker 4: to come back to you with a question. Helmet sticker
- 6:59Speaker 4: for this game, I'm going to give it to Brian
- 7:01Speaker 4: Robinson Jr. The backup running back, I took him. Brian
- 7:05Speaker 4: Robinson Jr.
- 7:06Speaker 2: he's not even the.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Best Robinson in his backfield, but he's really, really good.
- 7:10Speaker 4: And when he was in for Bijan, they didn't lose
- 7:12Speaker 4: too much of a step. He's not a breakaway back,
- 7:14Speaker 4: but he's got that nice cut move, really nice running back,
- 7:17Speaker 4: three touchdowns for him. You're playing on a team where
- 7:20Speaker 4: Atlanta usually doesn't have a big lead, so you don't
- 7:22Speaker 4: think you're getting in a lot. You don't think you're
- 7:23Speaker 4: going to get touches from Bijan.
- 7:25Speaker 2: He got some. Well, I mean, fantasy players know all
- 7:27Speaker 2: about Brian Robinson. A, you might have drafted B. Robinson
- 7:30Speaker 2: on Atlanta and ended up with the wrong Robinson. That happens.
- 7:33Speaker 2: But he's a touchdown vulture, so he's a big deal
- 7:36Speaker 2: in the fantasy community.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Does he take him away from Bijan?
- 7:38Speaker 2: Oh, my God. A five-yard line? They don't want Bijan
- 7:41Speaker 2: running into sort of tight boxes, so they put in Brian.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Who hates their quarterback the most? Is it the running
- 7:46Speaker 4: backs in the Buffalo who don't get any carries at
- 7:48Speaker 4: the goal line?
- 7:48Speaker 3: Is that the one? Who's your helmet sticker?
- 7:50Speaker 2: Okay, my helmet sticker is the Atlanta offensive line. They
- 7:52Speaker 2: were dominant last night. B. John Robinson wasn't touched until
- 7:55Speaker 2: about three or four yards. Every guy in the line
- 7:57Speaker 2: gets one. Yeah, I don't know. It's a lot of stickers.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I don't know how many we actually have, Paul. We're
- 8:01Speaker 2: going to have to print some more because I've given
- 8:03Speaker 2: five stickers out last night for the highly graded Atlanta
- 8:07Speaker 2: offensive line.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Okay, I want to take a 20 here before we
- 8:10Speaker 4: move on to baseball. Tyler Shuck, it feels like they
- 8:13Speaker 4: found a quarterback.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:14Speaker 3: They don't owe him a lot of money.
- 8:15Speaker 4: They're in really good shape financially at the quarterback position,
- 8:17Speaker 4: the Saints. If the Saints go on some type of
- 8:19Speaker 4: free fall and they are in the top six or
- 8:22Speaker 4: seven draft picks, are they ignoring the quarterback position or
- 8:26Speaker 4: addressing the quarterback position?
- 8:27Speaker 2: Well, I don't think they're going to get one, two,
- 8:29Speaker 2: or three because Miami is so dedicated to losing. The
- 8:32Speaker 2: Titans are terrible, and the Jets are bad. But if, say,
- 8:35Speaker 2: they're 6 or 7, no way. You stick with Tyler Shuck.
- 8:37Speaker 2: He's still in his rookie deal. You can build around him.
- 8:39Speaker 2: And I've never seen a team in my life that
- 8:41Speaker 2: needed a defensive end more than New Orleans. They need
- 8:43Speaker 2: a pass rush.
- 8:44Speaker 4: So you would say if Tyler Shuck has a nice season,
- 8:46Speaker 4: you ignore the quarterback position?
- 8:47Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Tyler Shuck, if Tyler Shuck played like
- 8:50Speaker 2: he did last night in a blowout loss, he's fine.
- 8:52Speaker 2: They desperately need a defensive end, and you can't get
- 8:55Speaker 2: a great defensive end after the top 10.
- 8:57Speaker 4: I'm going to press the gas on this one. What
- 8:59Speaker 4: if they somehow have the fourth pick of the draft,
- 9:01Speaker 4: the Saints?
- 9:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:02Speaker 4: And Arch Manning is somehow available.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fiction that Arch Manning is going to be
- 9:06Speaker 2: available for the full time.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Okay, but stay with it for a second.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Yeah, fine. You take Arch. But Arch is going to
- 9:10Speaker 2: be there. How are they going to get up to four,
- 9:11Speaker 2: by the way? They're not nearly that bad. There are
- 9:13Speaker 2: some terrible teams in the NFL.
- 9:15Speaker 3: It can't happen.
- 9:16Speaker 2: It could always happen.
- 9:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Wait, what would you do?
- 9:18Speaker 3: I can't pass on Arch Manning in New Orleans. I
- 9:21Speaker 3: wouldn't want to be the GM.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Who does that because you're going to get crushed that day.
- 9:25Speaker 4: And look, I know Tyler Shuck is nice. He seems
- 9:27Speaker 4: like a really good quarterback on a nice rookie contract.
- 9:30Speaker 4: I would never be the guy in New Orleans who
- 9:32Speaker 4: passes on Arch Manning. And now I may, if he's
- 9:35Speaker 4: as good as his uncle Eli, that would be fine.
- 9:38Speaker 2: I love now the Giants are looking at drafting Arch Manning.
- 9:42Speaker 2: The Titans are looking at drafting Arch Manning. There are
- 9:44Speaker 2: about nine teams that are about to lose their quarterback
- 9:46Speaker 2: for Arch Manning. We don't even know if Arch Manning
- 9:48Speaker 2: is going into the draft. But I think the Saints,
- 9:50Speaker 2: I mean, you watched last night. Cameron Jordan should be
- 9:53Speaker 2: in the booth at this point. He's getting older. He's
- 9:56Speaker 2: going to go away. Colin Simmons is my guy for
- 9:58Speaker 2: them right now, but they need deep. defense, defense.
- 10:01Speaker 3: I am with you, though.
- 10:02Speaker 4: I think Tyler Sheck is the answer-ish there. All right,
- 10:04Speaker 4: let's get some baseball last night. White Sox cruise in
- 10:07Speaker 4: their fourth straight road game. They have one more game
- 10:09Speaker 4: to go to advance in the ALCS, but the Yankees.
- 10:12Speaker 4: The Yankees are down 2-0 to the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 10:15Speaker 4: The Rays won the division. Shouldn't be that big of
- 10:17Speaker 4: a surprise. But the Yankees are, bats-wise, laying a little
- 10:20Speaker 4: bit of an egg.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Well, the fact that they can't hit
- 10:22Speaker 2: is one thing. Then the fielding came back last night.
- 10:25Speaker 2: That's the embarrassing thing. At a moment, they had the
- 10:29Speaker 2: most errors in a game since 1976. Oh, wow. But
- 10:32Speaker 2: then the scores changed into four errors. A lot of
- 10:36Speaker 2: it didn't really hurt them because it was early on
- 10:37Speaker 2: in the game and Cam Schlittler got out of it.
- 10:40Speaker 2: But this is embarrassing, and it points to Paul, and
- 10:43Speaker 2: I think you agree with me on this. The Yankees
- 10:45Speaker 2: are not a good fundamental baseball team.
- 10:47Speaker 4: No, I don't think they've been a good fundamental team
- 10:49Speaker 4: in a long time, and their best guys are injured,
- 10:51Speaker 4: which is only so much of an excuse.
- 10:53Speaker 3: But they made it work against the Red Sox.
- 10:55Speaker 4: They were able to hit against the Red Sox, so
- 10:57Speaker 4: there's no excuses. The rookies hit, you can't count on
- 10:59Speaker 4: rookies hitting. But the bigger picture is Yankees manager Aaron Boone,
- 11:02Speaker 4: he's like a B student. No one gets mad at
- 11:05Speaker 4: a B student, and you don't get awards at graduation time,
- 11:07Speaker 4: believe me.
- 11:08Speaker 3: But he's not doing much.
- 11:10Speaker 4: I compare, I comp Aaron Boone, the manager of the Yankees,
- 11:13Speaker 4: to like a good quarterback in the NFL who can't
- 11:15Speaker 4: get you anywhere. Why are we staying with this guy?
- 11:17Speaker 4: The Yankees have not won a World Series since 2009. Oh,
- 11:19Speaker 4: that was 16 years ago. That was 17 years ago.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Let me do my math. That's before social media. That
- 11:26Speaker 3: can't happen.
- 11:26Speaker 4: And I know they're in the playoffs every year. I
- 11:28Speaker 4: know they're in the playoffs every year, the Yankees. But
- 11:30Speaker 4: if this were an NFL team, it reminds me of
- 11:33Speaker 4: Marvin Lewis with the Bengals.
- 11:34Speaker 3: You're going to be good every year?
- 11:36Speaker 2: Fine.
- 11:36Speaker 3: But why are you going to threaten?
- 11:38Speaker 2: I mean, I think a little better than Marvin Lewis.
- 11:40Speaker 3: I just copped the hell out of that segment.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Well, I got to tell you, in 2009, I had
- 11:44Speaker 2: a Facebook page because I remember Facebooking my friend about
- 11:46Speaker 2: how the Yankees.
- 11:47Speaker 3: You had a MySpace page and you still have it.
- 11:49Speaker 2: So that's true. You know, here's the bottom line with
- 11:53Speaker 2: the Yankees. They're a family owned team. Don't forget that
- 11:55Speaker 2: they are. They're still a family-owned team. I think if
- 11:58Speaker 2: they were a corporate team, they would have fired Brian Cashman,
- 12:01Speaker 2: the GM, and Aaron Boone a long time ago. And
- 12:04Speaker 2: I know they spend like crazy, but they're kind of
- 12:06Speaker 2: running it like a mom-and-pop shop. Because you're right, a
- 12:08Speaker 2: lot of teams would have gotten rid of Aaron Boone.
- 12:09Speaker 3: I think you could be overly patient as ownership. And
- 12:12Speaker 3: Aaron Boone, where's your loyalty?
- 12:13Speaker 2: They like him. I mean, it comes down to a
- 12:16Speaker 2: personal relationship, and that might not be how you win titles.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I like you.
- 12:20Speaker 3: I would have fired you after 15 years or not.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Actually, not so much. All right. All right, well, that's
- 12:25Speaker 2: a very nice note to end that baseball segment on.
- 12:28Speaker 2: We have a lot more baseball coming up. But next,
- 12:31Speaker 2: I have a rookie in the NFL that I am
- 12:33Speaker 2: thrilled with. And Paul is going to talk about the
- 12:36Speaker 2: Chicago White Sox. Not so fast.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Paul Pabst, Andrew Perloff. The
- 12:44Speaker 4: midday pick-me-up, Pearl. You've got a big cup of coffee
- 12:46Speaker 4: next to you. Here's another one.
- 12:47Speaker 3: The White Sox, again last night.
- 12:51Speaker 5: Bango.
- 12:51Speaker 2: There you go.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Yep.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Down the line.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Four straight road games, four straight wins, day off, back home,
- 12:59Speaker 4: at the rate. Sox fans are going nuts. Two years ago,
- 13:02Speaker 4: 121 losses.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Wild. So, Paul, let me ask you, who's the breakout
- 13:08Speaker 2: star on this team? I know we'll get more into
- 13:09Speaker 2: it in a second, but you're going to talk about them.
- 13:13Speaker 2: My friends and I were talking about the White Sox
- 13:14Speaker 2: this weekend. And we're getting into the translator situation. That
- 13:18Speaker 2: seems to be the.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Murakami?
- 13:19Speaker 2: Murakami is very funny.
- 13:22Speaker 4: He's gotten a lot of run for his celebrations. And
- 13:24Speaker 4: if they happen to advance this round, he'll get it again.
- 13:27Speaker 4: You need some type of hook because the rest of
- 13:29Speaker 4: their players, Chase Medroth, they're not even close to household names.
- 13:32Speaker 3: They're not even household names. North 35th Street.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so you're my guide. You're my White Sox mentor.
- 13:38Speaker 2: You're my White Sox Sherpa, as it will. Bring me
- 13:40Speaker 2: along on this journey because I want in if they're
- 13:42Speaker 2: going to make a run. Look at you. Get on it.
- 13:44Speaker 3: I love it, pro. Welcome to the bandwagon. Here we go.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Let's get to some warm takes. We're going to start
- 13:47Speaker 3: off with some baseball. I'll go first. It's warm take time.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Nice and cozy on a 44-degree morning here at Warm
- 13:53Speaker 4: Take Land. The Chicago White Sox are on the cusp,
- 13:56Speaker 4: the cusp of a great American sports story. It doesn't
- 13:59Speaker 4: matter what sport it is. They cruised the wild card.
- 14:02Speaker 4: There's a ways to go. They've got nine wins to go.
- 14:04Speaker 4: That's a long way. But they have everything in place.
- 14:08Speaker 4: They were, two years ago, the worst team in 100 years,
- 14:10Speaker 4: 120 years in baseball. I think it was the Cleveland Spiders,
- 14:14Speaker 4: twice-defunct team. They have everything in place for this. They
- 14:19Speaker 4: don't know what they don't know.
- 14:20Speaker 3: They're winning. They're patchworking. They're bullpen. Starters are relieving. Relievers
- 14:25Speaker 3: are starting. Whatever it may be.
- 14:26Speaker 4: But they do have nine games to go. They're in
- 14:29Speaker 4: the middle of this run that could be historical. The
- 14:31Speaker 4: media has not jumped on yet. They might, but they wait.
- 14:35Speaker 4: The media, talking for all of us, they don't get
- 14:38Speaker 4: in too early on things. Sometimes they get in a
- 14:39Speaker 4: little late. If you want to comp this out, the
- 14:42Speaker 4: White Sox are going to really have to get to
- 14:43Speaker 4: the World Series before they get their due. It'll be
- 14:45Speaker 4: week one. It's like an NCAA team getting to the
- 14:48Speaker 4: Final Four. Loyola love Chicago and a team like that.
- 14:51Speaker 4: If they could ever get to the Final Four, that's
- 14:53Speaker 4: where you get your flowers. Now, the White Sox, again,
- 14:56Speaker 4: Nine games to go, so they're not there yet. But
- 14:58Speaker 4: I'm not sure what the comp is for this White
- 15:00Speaker 4: Sox team historically. If you look at other sports, if
- 15:02Speaker 4: you're a soccer fan, Leicester City went in the Premier League,
- 15:05Speaker 4: I think that was 2016. Buster Douglas, Mike Tyson, a
- 15:09Speaker 4: nobody over a heavyweight. NC State basketball, everyone remembers that
- 15:13Speaker 4: from 83. Rulon Gardner, the wrestler, someone suggested. But here's
- 15:17Speaker 4: the kicker, Perloff. You need the Dodgers to be in
- 15:19Speaker 4: the World Series for the White Sox to have the
- 15:22Speaker 4: hugest of stories.
- 15:23Speaker 3: The White Sox.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Spend one-third of what the Dodgers spend. So to make
- 15:28Speaker 4: this an all-time great story, you need the Dodgers in there.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Even with the Dodgers, your analogy to me is way off.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Too short, too high, too low?
- 15:37Speaker 2: Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson was one of the biggest
- 15:39Speaker 2: shocks in sports history. Anybody can win in baseball. And
- 15:42Speaker 2: my example is, three years ago, the Blue Jays won
- 15:45Speaker 2: 74 games. Next year, they're in Game 7 against the
- 15:48Speaker 2: Dodgers in the World Series. Then this year, they won
- 15:51Speaker 2: 76 games. Baseball is too erratic. You don't have a
- 15:54Speaker 2: Mike Tyson. Even the Dodgers, as great as they are,
- 15:57Speaker 2: and they might not even make the World Series. The
- 15:59Speaker 2: odds are they probably won't make the World Series.
- 16:01Speaker 4: But I thought this was the one example. How about
- 16:03Speaker 4: Villanova versus Georgetown? Villanova was not even horrible.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Georgetown had a 100% chance coming into that tournament of
- 16:12Speaker 2: winning it. They had a 99.9%. The Dodgers had a 20% chance.
- 16:15Speaker 2: These are Goliath. There's no Goliath in baseball. It's not
- 16:18Speaker 2: the White Sox. It's the Goliath side. No powerhouse is
- 16:22Speaker 2: that good.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Okay, I know what you're saying.
- 16:23Speaker 4: I know usually in baseball it's easier to go from
- 16:25Speaker 4: last to first over the course of a couple years,
- 16:27Speaker 4: not usually one season. But the White Sox remind me
- 16:29Speaker 4: of Villanova is that they got no coverage during the year.
- 16:32Speaker 4: They weren't that bad. And Georgetown was the heavyweight. John Thompson,
- 16:36Speaker 4: Patrick Ewing in 85. I think Shohei Otani is worldwide.
- 16:40Speaker 4: They got everybody with the Dodgers. This is the one
- 16:42Speaker 4: example of a nowhere team, the worst in history two
- 16:46Speaker 4: years ago, facing the one that spends all the money.
- 16:49Speaker 4: I know we're a ways from there, but I think
- 16:50Speaker 4: that's the closest comp. And by the way, I was
- 16:52Speaker 4: rooting for Georgetown in that game.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I don't think so. You couldn't get a shot off
- 16:55Speaker 2: within 14 feet of the basket because Patrick Ewing would
- 16:57Speaker 2: block it. I remember that, Georgetown. They're not even close.
- 17:00Speaker 2: You grew up there.
- 17:01Speaker 3: How serious was Villanova?
- 17:03Speaker 2: That was the biggest shock. Nobody on earth predicted Villanova.
- 17:08Speaker 2: In baseball, you're never going to have that. You're never
- 17:11Speaker 2: going to have the David and Kalia scenario. One thing,
- 17:13Speaker 2: I did see a stat on the White Sox, Paul.
- 17:15Speaker 2: They haven't clinched at home since, guess what year? 83?
- 17:18Speaker 3: 83.
- 17:19Speaker 2: 1906.
- 17:20Speaker 6: 06.
- 17:20Speaker 3: That was my second guess.
- 17:21Speaker 5: 83.
- 17:21Speaker 2: They haven't clinched a series. They've won five series in
- 17:26Speaker 2: their history.
- 17:26Speaker 3: They took a horse and buggy home from that game.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Historically, this is as unpredictable as you get. All right.
- 17:31Speaker 2: I'm going to go to the NFL for my first
- 17:33Speaker 2: warm take. The New York Giants are 3-1. What? This
- 17:37Speaker 2: is the silliest 3-1 I've ever seen in my entire life.
- 17:40Speaker 2: They beat the Cardinals on Sunday, who are bad. And
- 17:44Speaker 2: I think the story of that game was yelling at
- 17:46Speaker 2: the official. We'll get into that later.
- 17:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:48Speaker 2: But there's a great chance that the New York Giants
- 17:50Speaker 2: go 6-1. Their next couple games, Commanders, Saints, Texans, a
- 17:55Speaker 2: combined record of 2-10. So Jameis Winston could lead them
- 17:59Speaker 2: to 6-1.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Wow.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Now, can you guess the last team that was 6-1
- 18:03Speaker 2: and did not make the playoffs?
- 18:04Speaker 3: I think it was like the St. Louis Cardinals years ago.
- 18:06Speaker 5: St.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Louis Rams.
- 18:07Speaker 2: It was Chicago Bears in 2012. Thanks for that. But
- 18:11Speaker 2: since they expanded to seven teams per conference in 2020,
- 18:15Speaker 2: no one's even come close. There's a great chance the
- 18:18Speaker 2: Giants start out 6-1. Then the second half of their schedule,
- 18:20Speaker 2: as you see, is a lot harder. You've got the
- 18:22Speaker 2: NFC West on there, and you've got at Detroit. I
- 18:26Speaker 2: do not see the Giants keeping this up. I think
- 18:29Speaker 2: they could have a historic letdown because they don't even
- 18:32Speaker 2: seem to want to win this year. Brian Burns is
- 18:34Speaker 2: out for the year. Jameis Winston's their quarterback. They darted J.J.
- 18:38Speaker 2: McCarthy as a developmental guy.
- 18:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Malik Nabors is still kind of recovering from his injury.
- 18:44Speaker 2: I don't know what their incentive to win is, and
- 18:47Speaker 2: yet here they are winning games.
- 18:48Speaker 4: And the thing about Jameis Winston, he could either win
- 18:50Speaker 4: or lose you any game at any time. You could
- 18:52Speaker 4: pencil him down. If he gets two touchdowns, he's getting
- 18:55Speaker 4: two picks because he's a sharer. But he's also a
- 18:57Speaker 4: guy who could throw for. 350 and two touchdowns in
- 19:00Speaker 4: the second half. You don't know from minute to minute
- 19:02Speaker 4: what you're getting with this guy, good or bad.
- 19:04Speaker 2: What will the media do if the Giants are 6-1?
- 19:07Speaker 2: Are they going to embrace them? Because say they beat
- 19:10Speaker 2: the Commanders. Jaden Daniels is supposed to play. Say he's gimpy.
- 19:13Speaker 2: The Saints defense is falling apart, and the Texans haven't
- 19:15Speaker 2: won a game. I don't know if the media is
- 19:18Speaker 2: going to fully embrace them or realize that this is
- 19:20Speaker 2: a schedule. 6-1 is only because of their schedule.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Well, I think the NFL media is always looking for
- 19:25Speaker 4: a feel-good, and it doesn't seem to be one.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Saints looked like that a month ago. Right now, you're
- 19:29Speaker 3: searching for a feel-good.
- 19:30Speaker 4: I think it's the Carolina Panthers would be the feel-good
- 19:33Speaker 4: story if they continued.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Yeah, always.
- 19:35Speaker 4: All right, let's go to my next warm take. In
- 19:38Speaker 4: a rare move, the NFL suspended two referees for separate
- 19:41Speaker 4: incidents on Sunday.
- 19:42Speaker 3: I'm sure you've seen them.
- 19:43Speaker 4: In one, a Vikings player accidentally knocked over a ref
- 19:46Speaker 4: and tried to pick him up. And the ref was like,
- 19:48Speaker 4: turn around. I thought it was go time for that ref.
- 19:49Speaker 4: He looked like he was going to die. like he
- 19:50Speaker 4: wanted to go. And then the other, and I know
- 19:52Speaker 4: we all saw and heard this one, Cardinals tight end
- 19:54Speaker 4: Trey McBride. He's chewing out the ref. He's going to
- 19:57Speaker 4: the sidelines. And a sideline camera right here catches the
- 19:59Speaker 4: ref going F-U twice. Admittedly F-U twice at Trey McBride.
- 20:04Speaker 4: And McBride goes, you see that? That's on camera. They
- 20:07Speaker 4: suspended both those refs. Now, At first, like almost everybody,
- 20:11Speaker 4: I said, you know, a ref can't do that. You've
- 20:13Speaker 4: got to be professional. You can't talk like that to
- 20:15Speaker 4: a player. And then I thought a little more about it,
- 20:17Speaker 4: and I've changed directions.
- 20:19Speaker 3: I think once in a while, a ref should be
- 20:20Speaker 3: allowed to go F-U, F-U to a player.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Refs, who I really believe are trying to do a
- 20:26Speaker 4: good job most of the time, I don't think he
- 20:27Speaker 4: was out to get Trey McBride or out to get
- 20:29Speaker 4: the Cardinals. The Cardinals usually lose on their own volition.
- 20:32Speaker 4: But once in a while, maybe a ref could say, hey, man,
- 20:35Speaker 4: get lost, with not get lost, but maybe an F
- 20:37Speaker 4: word in there. And refs get yelled at all the time.
- 20:40Speaker 4: The NBA, they get ridden all day. Baseball, not so
- 20:43Speaker 4: much anymore. The NFL, they get yelled at all day.
- 20:46Speaker 4: We can't hear it in the stands and can't hear it.
- 20:48Speaker 4: That's a version of, you know, he was over the top.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Trey McBride said something to the ref like, you're horrible
- 20:54Speaker 4: for this game. That's a judgment of what you do. Now,
- 20:57Speaker 4: does that mean the ref had the right to do it?
- 20:59Speaker 4: But it was kind of refreshing to see him say, hey, dude,
- 21:02Speaker 4: F you just one time because it was original. Now,
- 21:05Speaker 4: I know he's suspended. I know you can't do it.
- 21:07Speaker 4: But I've gone to a lot of college games.
- 21:09Speaker 3: I've gone to a lot of.
- 21:09Speaker 4: High school games and kids games. The refs get berated
- 21:12Speaker 4: all day, all the time. And it's kind of like understandable. Understandable.
- 21:16Speaker 2: You're going so against the grain here. You're taking my
- 21:18Speaker 2: against the grain.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Isn't their job to be professional no matter what the
- 21:23Speaker 2: player says?
- 21:24Speaker 5: Okay.
- 21:24Speaker 4: And is it also the job of the players in sports,
- 21:27Speaker 4: all sports, to do their job and let the refs
- 21:29Speaker 4: do their job and not ride them every minute of
- 21:32Speaker 4: every game? If you watch NBA games, there's some players
- 21:35Speaker 4: who live at the referee. and should be more focused
- 21:38Speaker 4: on what they're doing. Like, if you're three for 18
- 21:41Speaker 4: from the field, it's probably not the ref's fault. And
- 21:43Speaker 4: by the way, Trey McBride, he gets the caveat because
- 21:46Speaker 4: he's a great player. He's very good at what he does.
- 21:48Speaker 3: But the Cardinals, their problems aren't the refs. The problems
- 21:51Speaker 3: are generally yourself.
- 21:52Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm sort of yelling at the TV
- 21:54Speaker 2: the same way Trey McBride is. I do not like
- 21:57Speaker 2: when the official makes himself the story. And I think
- 21:59Speaker 2: that's what these guys were doing.
- 22:01Speaker 4: I'm being mostly facetious in this one. But I could see, like,
- 22:03Speaker 4: imagine if someone was just berating you for years and
- 22:06Speaker 4: years and years. And one time you turn around and go,
- 22:08Speaker 4: blank you. It happens to get picked up on camera.
- 22:11Speaker 2: You're going from a human level. I understand that. I
- 22:13Speaker 2: keep it real. At an amateur level, it is. And
- 22:16Speaker 2: youth sports, I know you follow and you've seen a lot.
- 22:19Speaker 2: That is not cool.
- 22:20Speaker 4: I'm getting paid $ 25 a game and you're chewing me
- 22:22Speaker 4: out for four quarters.
- 22:22Speaker 2: I think the NFL officials get paid enough to handle that.
- 22:26Speaker 2: So I disagree with you on that. Fair point. Okay,
- 22:28Speaker 2: I want to claim an early defensive rookie of the
- 22:31Speaker 2: year in the NFL. Now, that's not a big deal
- 22:33Speaker 2: in itself, but I just want to claim this guy
- 22:36Speaker 2: as my guy. Dolphins linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, he is stacking
- 22:40Speaker 2: up numbers like you've never seen for a rookie. Second
- 22:42Speaker 2: in the league in tackles. and is all over the
- 22:45Speaker 2: field every time. Not just that, his story is still amazing.
- 22:49Speaker 2: The reason that he was top five in Heisman voting
- 22:51Speaker 2: last year at Texas Tech is because he's awesome, was
- 22:54Speaker 2: a quarterback at Virginia, has a wife who is in
- 22:57Speaker 2: the military, and everything he says is amazing. But I'll
- 23:00Speaker 2: tell you one thing, Miami doesn't want to win this year,
- 23:03Speaker 2: Nobody gave that memo to Jacob Rodriguez because he flies
- 23:06Speaker 2: around the field and dominates the game. He was great
- 23:10Speaker 2: against Minnesota. He has a nose for the ball. This
- 23:14Speaker 2: guy is a must-watch inside linebacker, and there are very
- 23:17Speaker 2: few of them. I'm going to compare him to the
- 23:19Speaker 2: way you had to see a young Urlacher, the way
- 23:21Speaker 2: you had to see young Zach Thomas. There you go.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Go on and on. Now, Jacob Rodriguez fell the second
- 23:26Speaker 2: round because of his position, Paul.
- 23:28Speaker 4: He was a Heisman candidate in college. He was a
- 23:30Speaker 4: Heisman candidate. He plays like he's from the 80s. The
- 23:32Speaker 4: mustache looks like he's from the 80s. And you mentioned
- 23:35Speaker 4: Zach Thomas, the great linebacker from the Dolphins. I think
- 23:38Speaker 4: they looked at that team and said, we need a
- 23:39Speaker 4: leader here. Now, we can't get the defensive end. We
- 23:42Speaker 4: can't get the great cornerback. Let's take a middle linebacker.
- 23:45Speaker 4: You know, the Lions did it with Jack Campbell, and
- 23:47Speaker 4: it's working out pretty well. Some other teams have done it.
- 23:50Speaker 6: Bumper.
- 23:50Speaker 4: We always undervalue and the draft undervalues middle linebackers, but
- 23:53Speaker 4: their impact could be like what he's doing right now, Rodriguez.
- 23:56Speaker 2: So I looked it up because I watch him play.
- 23:57Speaker 2: He looks like he's playing very, very fast. He ran
- 23:59Speaker 2: a 4-5-7-40, which is okay. But it must be his instinct.
- 24:04Speaker 2: He is flying around there. I think he's going to
- 24:06Speaker 2: be a superstar in the NFL. He's my guy. He's
- 24:09Speaker 2: everybody's guy. He's America's guy. Jacob Rodriguez. Remember how much
- 24:11Speaker 2: everyone loved him last year? Now we get that in
- 24:14Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 24:14Speaker 4: All right, let's stay with college football. He was a
- 24:16Speaker 4: great player in college football and a Heisman candidate last year.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Before we break, we have to do the college football
- 24:21Speaker 4: play of the year. You've got to hold serve on
- 24:24Speaker 4: this one. If you win one week, can you hold it,
- 24:26Speaker 4: or do we move on to another one the next week?
- 24:28Speaker 4: Let's go back to that Iowa touchdown versus Michigan just
- 24:31Speaker 4: a couple weeks ago. Back shoulder throw, Hank Brown right there.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Bingo.
- 24:37Speaker 4: Sorry, Michigan fans, we have to show it again in
- 24:39Speaker 4: the contract. Great play, impactful play. Big play this season. Now,
- 24:44Speaker 4: we're going to go to your neck of the woods,
- 24:45Speaker 4: Ivy League. Harvard versus Colgate. I think this game was
- 24:48Speaker 4: in standard definition. Watch this play, Pearl. Last call for Harvard.
- 24:53Speaker 4: Smart guy throws it a little short. Watch his heady play.
- 24:56Speaker 4: Get the drift here.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Heady play.
- 24:57Speaker 5: Whoop!
- 24:59Speaker 3: Into the end zone.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Harvard wins over Colgate. Your thoughts as an Ivy Leaguer?
- 25:03Speaker 2: Well, listen, Harvard's totally overrated as a college, but as
- 25:06Speaker 2: a football player, that was awesome.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Now, it wasn't one of your safety schools, right? You
- 25:09Speaker 3: passed on that.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Oh, Harvard. In reality, I did not get into Harvard.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Wanted to go there, but I do hold a bit
- 25:15Speaker 2: of a grudge. Let it out. My mom was born
- 25:18Speaker 2: in Hamilton, New York, where Colgate is, so I think
- 25:20Speaker 2: we were robbed there. I'm a big Colgate fan. I
- 25:23Speaker 2: think it definitely surpasses Iowa, and I'll tell you why.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Because that Michigan win is getting less impressive by the day. Yes.
- 25:30Speaker 3: It was a great moment. It was a great road
- 25:32Speaker 3: win for Iowa.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Well, great. At the end of the season, I don't
- 25:34Speaker 2: think it means the same thing. I think Harvard wins
- 25:37Speaker 2: this one, Paul.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Finally, someone from Harvard gets a break. All right, coming
- 25:40Speaker 4: up next, NFL injury issues. The serious, the not-so-serious, and a.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Lot more to get to. This is Not So Fast.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Stick around. Much more to come.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's
- 25:50Speaker 2: Paul Pabst. Pub and Grub, we put out every Thursday?
- 25:54Speaker 4: Yeah, Thursday we start cultivating it. So this weekend we'll
- 25:57Speaker 4: pick a spot in a local town. We're doing college
- 25:59Speaker 4: towns to start the season. Great place to watch football,
- 26:02Speaker 4: drink beer, eat food, not necessarily in that order.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Yeah, we've had some killers so far. Okay, speaking of killers,
- 26:09Speaker 2: it has been an injury-laden season in the NFL. Paul,
- 26:12Speaker 2: if you don't mind, I want to start it off
- 26:14Speaker 2: with one team that is really getting hit hard, and
- 26:17Speaker 2: that's my Philadelphia Eagles. So just to start off here,
- 26:21Speaker 2: six starters are out, including possibly for Sunday against Jacksonville
- 26:25Speaker 2: in London. Saquon is week-to-week with a hammy. Landon Dickerson,
- 26:29Speaker 2: Cam Juergens, Devontae Smith, on and on and on. You
- 26:33Speaker 2: see the list. But there's one name that really stands
- 26:35Speaker 2: out to me there. It's Lane Johnson, L. Johnson there. Personal.
- 26:38Speaker 2: We're not quite sure what's happening. There's a rumor that
- 26:41Speaker 2: he might retire. Let me just give you the Eagles
- 26:43Speaker 2: record without Lane Johnson. They're 122-63 with their right tackle.
- 26:48Speaker 2: They're 18-29 without him. There is something about the Eagles
- 26:51Speaker 2: they cannot win without Lane Johnson. They are a team
- 26:53Speaker 2: that is propelled by their offensive line, and when their
- 26:56Speaker 2: O-line is not healthy, they struggle.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Yeah, the best Eagles teams were those offensive defensive line-led
- 27:01Speaker 4: teams back in the Fletcher Cox days. I would say,
- 27:03Speaker 4: looking at that list, I give them more credit for
- 27:06Speaker 4: having the lead against the Rams with a lot of
- 27:07Speaker 4: those injuries. Zach Bond's fantastic. Lane Johnson, obviously. I mean,
- 27:11Speaker 4: those are impact players. Dallas Goddard is a very consistent
- 27:14Speaker 4: wide receiver, a dialed tight end. I look at that
- 27:17Speaker 4: and almost give him credit for being in the mix
- 27:19Speaker 4: at this point in the season.
- 27:21Speaker 2: I heard a take, and I'm sorry, I'm not sure
- 27:23Speaker 2: who to credit to. A couple people have hinted at this,
- 27:25Speaker 2: that all those years of tush pushing have worn down
- 27:28Speaker 2: their offensive line. Do you buy that at all? Because
- 27:31Speaker 2: the big problem, Landon Dickerson and Cam Juergens in the
- 27:33Speaker 2: middle have been hurt a lot lately, and it's really
- 27:36Speaker 2: slowed them down.
- 27:37Speaker 3: I would like to know from them.
- 27:38Speaker 4: I had the feeling you'll never know because they'll never
- 27:41Speaker 4: blame it on the offensive system or that play because
- 27:43Speaker 4: that play has brought them so much success. I would
- 27:45Speaker 4: like to ask Jason Kelsey if he could say what
- 27:48Speaker 4: those linemen go through doing that play multiple times a
- 27:50Speaker 4: game and maybe 100 times in a season.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it does seem like it's possible, and
- 27:55Speaker 2: I don't want to be an alarmist, that it's the
- 27:56Speaker 2: end of a little bit of an era. Because Lane
- 27:58Speaker 2: Johnson will probably retire after this year, and they can't
- 28:01Speaker 2: dominate with the O-line.
- 28:02Speaker 4: You know, the one thing that does bother me when
- 28:03Speaker 4: I watch Hurts, it does seem like Hurts should pull
- 28:05Speaker 4: out all the stops in games like this. And you
- 28:07Speaker 4: watch them more than I do. He feels like he
- 28:10Speaker 4: runs less often than he has. And I'm trying to
- 28:12Speaker 4: be real fair to the guy. I'm not going to
- 28:13Speaker 4: break down his game. He feels like he has to
- 28:15Speaker 4: be convinced to run in a game.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Well, it's really hard when you have that $ 50 million
- 28:19Speaker 2: contract weighing down your pants. Jalen Hurts' refusal to run.
- 28:23Speaker 2: He likes to run towards the sideline. He doesn't want
- 28:25Speaker 2: to run up the field consistently anymore. He will at times.
- 28:28Speaker 2: He still could move if he wanted to.
- 28:29Speaker 4: There was a point where he was a very threatening runner.
- 28:32Speaker 4: If you remember McNabb back in the day, one of
- 28:34Speaker 4: the things McNabb had was base. He was a strong dude,
- 28:37Speaker 4: and Jalen Hurts was a strong dude.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Well, and Big Dab tore his ACL and changed a lot.
- 28:41Speaker 2: But I'll tell you, I think it's a choice by Jalen.
- 28:43Speaker 2: He wants longevity. And you know who doesn't make a choice?
- 28:45Speaker 2: Josh Allen. Josh Allen just puts it all out there,
- 28:48Speaker 2: and he doesn't get hurt. Maybe it's a matter of time.
- 28:51Speaker 3: I think he has to. With all these guys out,
- 28:53Speaker 3: he's going to have to run.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Let's get to this one.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Lamar Jackson, sprained ankle, not a lot of updates on it.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Albert Breer, earlier on the Dan Patch Show, said it's
- 29:00Speaker 4: very unclear if How would you treat this if it
- 29:03Speaker 4: were a week-to-week injury with Lamar Jackson? I'll let you
- 29:06Speaker 4: go first because I think I know how I'd treat
- 29:08Speaker 4: this if I were the head coach.
- 29:09Speaker 2: For me, I'm all about caution. It's a long season.
- 29:11Speaker 2: It's 17 games. If you miss Lamar for two games,
- 29:15Speaker 2: I don't think it's going to bury you in the
- 29:16Speaker 2: AFC playoff picture. Now, Atlanta, you could beat Atlanta with
- 29:20Speaker 2: Snoop Huntley because we have no idea who Atlanta is.
- 29:22Speaker 4: Tyler Huntley is a pretty high-end backup. He's been there
- 29:24Speaker 4: a long time. He plays a similar game. Atlanta, Browns, Bengals. Yeah,
- 29:29Speaker 4: I would definitely rest him. I want him healthy for
- 29:31Speaker 4: that Bills game because that's how you can take down
- 29:32Speaker 4: the Bills. But if you look at their division, Bengals, Steelers, Browns.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Yeah, all three are promising.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Promising but not threatening.
- 29:41Speaker 2: I think the Bengals are threatening. I think Cleveland, you
- 29:43Speaker 2: do not know what's going to happen there. And Pittsburgh
- 29:45Speaker 2: is going to be 10-7.
- 29:46Speaker 4: If I'm Baltimore, I use caution like you said. No
- 29:49Speaker 4: reason to push this because once he's out, you can
- 29:51Speaker 4: pack it up and go home.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Well, what about home field though? I mean, you could
- 29:55Speaker 2: think of it, our producer Scott Messina was yelling at
- 29:57Speaker 2: me about this before the game. You might be able
- 29:59Speaker 2: to get into the playoffs without Lamar Jackson, but will
- 30:02Speaker 2: you get home field? You don't want to go to
- 30:04Speaker 2: Buffalo if you're Baltimore.
- 30:05Speaker 4: You don't want to go on vacation if you're them.
- 30:07Speaker 4: If you start Lamar Jackson, he wrecks his ankle. or
- 30:10Speaker 4: gets hurt worse because he's overcompensating, you just pack it
- 30:12Speaker 4: up and go home.
- 30:13Speaker 2: I think, by the way, they have a couple. They
- 30:15Speaker 2: do have Derrick Henry, and they do have Zay Flowers
- 30:18Speaker 2: is ascending as a superstar wide receiver.
- 30:20Speaker 4: The reason Derrick Henry works is when they do that
- 30:22Speaker 4: read option, the threat of the other guy.
- 30:24Speaker 2: He's Derrick Henry. He's one of the top ten running
- 30:26Speaker 2: backs of all time.
- 30:27Speaker 4: Yeah, by the way, I watched them do a read
- 30:29Speaker 4: option with Jared Goff the other day.
- 30:31Speaker 3: No one's worried about Jared Goff running. You're not fooling me.
- 30:33Speaker 2: All right, next in your team. Now, the Green Bay Packers,
- 30:36Speaker 2: there's so many injuries. It's been all season long. Unlike
- 30:40Speaker 2: the Eagles and the Ravens, it's not even recent. Every
- 30:42Speaker 2: week they lose someone. They lost one of my favorite
- 30:44Speaker 2: players in the league, linebacker Edgerton Cooper, a torn Achilles,
- 30:47Speaker 2: and Jaden Reed, who's so good but has trouble staying
- 30:50Speaker 2: on the field consistently. Are we taking the Packers seriously
- 30:55Speaker 2: with these injuries or are we? Just sort of saying
- 30:57Speaker 2: this is not your year.
- 30:58Speaker 4: Well, they've got to be getting used to this because
- 30:59Speaker 4: this happened to them last year. Christian Watson, the wide receiver.
- 31:02Speaker 4: Other players were hurt. Tucker Craft was out most of
- 31:04Speaker 4: the season. And they got used to it.
- 31:06Speaker 3: And they were a good team.
- 31:07Speaker 4: But I think you get to a certain point where
- 31:10Speaker 4: we can sneak into the playoffs with these guys out,
- 31:12Speaker 4: but what can we do damage-wise?
- 31:14Speaker 3: The Lions aren't setting the world on fire.
- 31:15Speaker 4: The Bears had a loss that they're not undefeated. So
- 31:19Speaker 4: I think in that division, the Vikings, as you say,
- 31:21Speaker 4: are a paper 4-0. So I don't think you worry
- 31:24Speaker 4: that much about being out of it this early.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Yeah, but have the Packers looked good? Have they looked
- 31:28Speaker 2: the part?
- 31:28Speaker 3: Their quarterback has looked good.
- 31:30Speaker 2: I'd say he looks okay. I think with the offensive
- 31:34Speaker 2: line losses, Jaden Reed is such a security blanket for
- 31:37Speaker 2: Jordan Love. And Andrew Cooper is to play. If Micah
- 31:40Speaker 2: Parsons comes back against the Cowboys, who's around him? I
- 31:43Speaker 2: just think this team has been beat up too much.
- 31:46Speaker 2: I got to tell you, Paul, I'm out. I'm out
- 31:48Speaker 2: on the Packers. I think these injuries are going to
- 31:50Speaker 2: ruin the season.
- 31:50Speaker 4: Remember what we do, the rule on the show. Once
- 31:51Speaker 4: you're out, you can't come back in.
- 31:52Speaker 2: I won't come back in. I'm really worried about it.
- 31:56Speaker 2: I'm not blaming Matt LaFleur, but I said earlier that
- 31:58Speaker 2: I think Kellen Moore could be on the hot seat
- 32:00Speaker 2: in New Orleans. I think Matt LaFleur is on the
- 32:02Speaker 2: hot seat. Not totally his fault. That's a serious list
- 32:06Speaker 2: of injuries.
- 32:06Speaker 4: The big question is, did Matt LaFleur use you being
- 32:09Speaker 4: out as bulletin board material for his team?
- 32:10Speaker 3: Like, hey, Pearl's out. Let's stick it back to him.
- 32:13Speaker 3: Last night, Monday Night Football, Falcons versus Saints. It was
- 32:17Speaker 3: a great night.
- 32:17Speaker 4: So one of the things I noticed last night, we
- 32:19Speaker 4: may have to do this on the regular, questions my
- 32:21Speaker 4: family asked me during football games. Now, they sat and watched.
- 32:25Speaker 4: They enjoyed the whole Steve Gleason tribute and all that things.
- 32:28Speaker 4: Here are these, and these are all true questions asked
- 32:30Speaker 4: me by my wife or daughters during the games. Hey,
- 32:33Speaker 4: did you know about the Steve Gleason story? I'm like, yes,
- 32:35Speaker 4: I heard that one before. It's pretty famous in NFL lore.
- 32:37Speaker 5: Okay.
- 32:39Speaker 4: And then my wife saw Drew Brees. She goes, Drew Brees,
- 32:41Speaker 4: not the quarterback of the Saints anymore?
- 32:42Speaker 3: I'm like, no, he's not.
- 32:44Speaker 2: But I understand.
- 32:45Speaker 4: She remembers him when he was there. Good for her,
- 32:47Speaker 4: still loving Drew Brees. The next one was, his name's Kool-Aid?
- 32:51Speaker 4: Kool-Aid McKinstry of the Saints, the defensive back from Alabama.
- 32:54Speaker 4: His real name is Jaquincy McKinstry. And I tried to
- 32:58Speaker 4: tell my wife and daughters that Kool-Aid was his born
- 33:01Speaker 4: given first name, and they believed me for about 10
- 33:03Speaker 4: or 20 seconds.
- 33:03Speaker 2: I've got to be honest. It's just as likely as
- 33:05Speaker 2: his real first name. I know.
- 33:06Speaker 4: I kind of wish it was Kool-Aid. I wish I
- 33:08Speaker 4: could name my kid Kool-Aid. Then the next question was
- 33:11Speaker 4: about Tyler Shuck. How can you play college football for
- 33:15Speaker 4: seven years? I needed an hour to explain this. I
- 33:17Speaker 4: had to explain COVID.
- 33:18Speaker 3: I had to explain NIL.
- 33:20Speaker 4: I had to tell them about transfer portals. And I
- 33:23Speaker 4: missed half of the game because I had to explain
- 33:24Speaker 4: the portal to my waters. My wife and daughters. They
- 33:27Speaker 4: also said, how is Sho Shuck on the back of
- 33:30Speaker 4: his jersey?
- 33:31Speaker 3: I didn't even touch that one.
- 33:32Speaker 2: I was curious about that. I've always wondered that.
- 33:35Speaker 4: Now, my last one, there was a defensive back for
- 33:37Speaker 4: the Saints whose pants were a little high. And my
- 33:39Speaker 4: daughter goes, he's wearing Capri pants, Dad. And that I
- 33:42Speaker 4: didn't really know what to say, too.
- 33:44Speaker 2: I understand. Actually, some of those questions made sense.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Those are fair questions.
- 33:48Speaker 2: I have some of the same questions. Yeah, no, I
- 33:51Speaker 2: love when you watch football with novices, Paul.
- 33:53Speaker 4: Yeah, and my daughters know football pretty well, but I
- 33:55Speaker 4: can't say they knew everything about Kool-Aid McKinstry.
- 33:58Speaker 2: All right. Coming up next on Not So Fast, Tyreek
- 34:01Speaker 2: Hill might have a new home soon. Or is it
- 34:04Speaker 2: a not-so-new home? We'll find out. Not So Fast.
- 34:12Speaker 3: That stadium.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Like, does it physically shake that night?
- 34:16Speaker 5: Oh, man, it was that moment was the loudest I've
- 34:19Speaker 5: ever heard. And we've been in there for some big moments,
- 34:22Speaker 5: big games and heard it pretty loud. But that was
- 34:28Speaker 5: that was I think that was that moment was the
- 34:31Speaker 5: release of. So much emotion, you know, from everyone who
- 34:35Speaker 5: was in that building. You know, you think about that time,
- 34:38Speaker 5: six months post-Katrina, you know, so many people trying to
- 34:39Speaker 5: rebuild their lives, rebuild their homes, and they're finding a
- 34:42Speaker 5: way to come into the Dome to support their team.
- 34:44Speaker 5: But also, in a way, it was, you know, look,
- 34:49Speaker 5: there was a lot of despair. You know, there was
- 34:50Speaker 5: a lot of hope, but there was a lot of despair.
- 34:52Speaker 5: And I think that moment just, man, it lifted their
- 34:55Speaker 5: spirits so much. And I think that was a release
- 34:58Speaker 5: of all that emotion.
- 34:58Speaker 6: All at once.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Pabst and Perloff, NBC Sports Now.
- 35:03Speaker 4: That's Drew Brees, who's been on the show for literally
- 35:06Speaker 4: two decades. It's going back to his days, I think,
- 35:08Speaker 4: at Purdue. He is so locked in with that city
- 35:12Speaker 4: of New Orleans, you almost don't remember that he's a Charger.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. Last night's game, Drew Brees was on camera
- 35:17Speaker 2: as much as any of the players, and it totally fit.
- 35:20Speaker 2: And by the way, you mentioned he's been on the
- 35:21Speaker 2: Dan Patrick Show a lot. He's one of my favorite interviews.
- 35:24Speaker 2: It's funny, when he got into broadcasting, he was so
- 35:27Speaker 2: smooth with Dan. I assumed it would be a straight
- 35:30Speaker 2: shot to the top, but it's been a bumpy road.
- 35:32Speaker 2: But we've always had amazing interviews with him.
- 35:34Speaker 4: Yeah, we've had a lot of memories of Drew Brees.
- 35:35Speaker 4: One of my favorites, we were in New York City
- 35:37Speaker 4: for the Super Bowl.
- 35:38Speaker 5: Yes.
- 35:38Speaker 3: And he wanted.
- 35:42Speaker 4: Jimmy Graham, the tight end, to sign a new contract.
- 35:44Speaker 4: And he goes, why don't you be like Tom Cruise
- 35:46Speaker 4: and jump on my table like Oprah? And he jumped
- 35:49Speaker 4: on the table and goes, I love Jimmy Graham.
- 35:50Speaker 3: I want Jimmy Graham. And that was a moment.
- 35:52Speaker 4: And then Drew Brees at the Miami Super Bowl, he
- 35:54Speaker 4: wasn't even booked to be on the show.
- 35:56Speaker 3: We saw him in the hallway.
- 35:57Speaker 4: And I go, Drew, we've got like two minutes left.
- 35:59Speaker 4: And he ran on set, grabbed some barbecue and sat
- 36:01Speaker 4: with Dan. I love those athletes that.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Dan and the show has a relationship from wire to wire,
- 36:06Speaker 3: like a J.J. Watt, like a Drew Brees.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Do you really remember? He must have been in Purdue.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Came out in 2001. He was a pretty big name,
- 36:13Speaker 2: as I recall.
- 36:14Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure he was on the Dan Patrick show
- 36:16Speaker 3: in 2001.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Can I share the trivia that I told you in
- 36:17Speaker 2: the break?
- 36:18Speaker 3: Go for it.
- 36:18Speaker 2: There were only 31 teams. He was a 32nd pick,
- 36:22Speaker 2: and he was technically a second rounder. I believe the
- 36:25Speaker 2: Texans had not joined the league when he came in.
- 36:26Speaker 3: That brief, weird period where the NFL had 31 teams.
- 36:29Speaker 2: So he's a second-round pick, but he was 32, so
- 36:31Speaker 2: he's kind of like a first-round pick. But everyone says, oh,
- 36:33Speaker 2: he's the best second-round quarterback ever. That's a bit of
- 36:36Speaker 2: a misnomer.
- 36:36Speaker 4: And the Chargers, that was the Vic trade with the
- 36:38Speaker 4: Giants where they got Tomlinson and Brees instead of Vic.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Yes. And then eventually, though, they moved on from Brees
- 36:45Speaker 2: because of the shoulder injury to Phillip Rivers. NFL history
- 36:49Speaker 2: just turns.
- 36:50Speaker 3: How about that?
- 36:50Speaker 2: All right.
- 36:51Speaker 4: Speaking of NFL, we got Dean Blandino, Fox rules analyst
- 36:55Speaker 4: was on today. Talk about the messy incidents over the
- 36:58Speaker 4: weekend with the NFL and the refs.
- 37:01Speaker 2: On camera. That's just that there there's no backing out
- 37:05Speaker 2: of that. It's unfortunate.
- 37:07Speaker 6: You've got to maintain your composure, but officials do hear
- 37:10Speaker 6: a lot of things out there on the football field,
- 37:12Speaker 6: but we've always told them you're, you're held to a
- 37:14Speaker 6: higher standard.
- 37:15Speaker 3: It's just, it's not acceptable.
- 37:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with Dean Blandino. It's part of the job.
- 37:20Speaker 2: That's what you get paid for. You know abuse is
- 37:23Speaker 2: going to come your way. The athletes are fired up
- 37:25Speaker 2: in any sport. They're running around. They're trying their hardest.
- 37:28Speaker 2: I think during the game, you can say whatever you want.
- 37:30Speaker 2: At the end of the game, everybody knows the deal.
- 37:33Speaker 2: The officials know that this athlete was fired up during
- 37:35Speaker 2: the game. I would not be as offended if I
- 37:39Speaker 2: was an official, even if the guy was cursing me
- 37:41Speaker 2: out all game long.
- 37:42Speaker 4: What was the least surprising thing, or maybe most surprising,
- 37:44Speaker 4: I'm not sure where you sit on this one, how
- 37:45Speaker 4: fast the NFL responded to this story. Within 24 hours,
- 37:49Speaker 4: two refs were suspended.
- 37:50Speaker 2: I always wonder, are the NFL and the officials are
- 37:53Speaker 2: on the same page. Because they're calling so much holding
- 37:55Speaker 2: right now, it's hurting offense. And the NFL loves offense.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Do the officials do what they want, or does Roger
- 38:00Speaker 2: Goodell put out a memo saying, you know what, we're
- 38:03Speaker 2: going to call a lot of holding the first four weeks?
- 38:04Speaker 4: You know, we've talked about this before with Dean Blandino
- 38:07Speaker 4: and other people on our show. There's points of emphasis
- 38:09Speaker 4: every year going into the NFL season. And it seems
- 38:11Speaker 4: like they throw those flags to discourage them later in
- 38:14Speaker 4: the season.
- 38:14Speaker 3: But it usually ruins September.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Yeah, but then come January in the playoffs, everybody's mugging
- 38:19Speaker 2: each other. So it gets totally ridiculous. Yeah. Now, Blandito is,
- 38:24Speaker 2: by the way, another longtime friend of the show. Oh, years. Okay.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Albert Breer was on earlier in the show. We were
- 38:30Speaker 2: talking about Tyreek Hill. Now, it looks like it might
- 38:32Speaker 2: be the Chiefs or the Bills. Breer, wait in. Where
- 38:36Speaker 2: do you think Tyreek Hill is going?
- 38:39Speaker 1: If I had to guess right now, I'd say Kansas
- 38:44Speaker 1: City or Buffalo.
- 38:44Speaker 5: Buffalo.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Now, I don't know what percentage of him we're getting
- 38:48Speaker 1: because it's not just coming back from the injury. And
- 38:50Speaker 1: the injury is a really difficult one to come back from, right?
- 38:54Speaker 2: And it's not just the injury. It's also his age.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Do you think he's going to go to the Chiefs?
- 38:59Speaker 2: I do.
- 39:00Speaker 1: I just think there's too many things in place there.
- 39:03Speaker 1: I know he's still got a relationship with Mahomes. You know,
- 39:07Speaker 1: I think that the Chiefs receiver situation is dire enough
- 39:10Speaker 1: now with the injuries to Taequann Thornton and Rashi Rice where–
- 39:15Speaker 1: Maybe they feel like they have to make a move.
- 39:18Speaker 4: So when I saw that, I heard Albert Breer, who
- 39:20Speaker 4: almost always knows what he's talking about, when he said
- 39:22Speaker 4: the Bills were in play for Tyreek Hill, my mind
- 39:25Speaker 4: went to, if I'm the Bills, I sign Tyreek Hill
- 39:27Speaker 4: and just put him in the back of the building
- 39:29Speaker 4: somewhere in bubble wrap, whether I use him or don't.
- 39:31Speaker 3: I just don't want him to be on the Chiefs.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Keep him away from the Chiefs.
- 39:34Speaker 3: I don't know if Tyreek Hill is healthy. It's like,
- 39:36Speaker 3: I don't know, what do you call it?
- 39:37Speaker 4: But like, I would sign and pay Tyreek Hill to
- 39:39Speaker 4: not play for the Chiefs.
- 39:41Speaker 2: I don't think Tyreek Hill would go for that. So
- 39:42Speaker 2: you just kind of lie to him? Because of the weather? No,
- 39:45Speaker 2: he doesn't want to go in bubble wrap. He doesn't
- 39:47Speaker 2: want to be a preventive thing. He wants to get
- 39:49Speaker 2: as many targets as possible.
- 39:51Speaker 4: Then I would also go to the Bills because they
- 39:53Speaker 4: could go on a run. But either way, when I
- 39:56Speaker 4: heard that, if I'm the Bills, I'd kick the tires
- 39:57Speaker 4: on that.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Actually, watching the Bills, I don't think they need Tyreek
- 40:00Speaker 2: Hill like Kansas City needs Tyreek Hill. You brought it
- 40:02Speaker 2: up earlier in the week with the Thornton injury and
- 40:04Speaker 2: Rasheed Rice injury. They are desperate. And honestly, if you
- 40:07Speaker 2: get 60% of peak Tyreek Hill, that's pretty good.
- 40:11Speaker 5: Right.
- 40:11Speaker 4: It's like Debo going back to the 49ers. We think
- 40:13Speaker 4: the career is over. I think a lot of people
- 40:15Speaker 4: think it's over. Rasheed Rice hurt. Tyquan Thornton was just
- 40:17Speaker 4: hitting his stride hurt. Xavier Worthy, I'm not sure if
- 40:20Speaker 4: he has a stride. I don't know if he's ever
- 40:21Speaker 4: going to get to it.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Xavier Worthy's good. We argue about this all the time.
- 40:24Speaker 2: He's productive in his moments. He's just not an every-down guy.
- 40:29Speaker 4: I'm not excited about phrases like good and productive for
- 40:32Speaker 4: first-round wide receivers.
- 40:33Speaker 3: I think he's good. All right, let's get to the
- 40:35Speaker 3: next one. Brian Robinson, Jr.
- 40:37Speaker 4: the running back for the Falcons.
- 40:39Speaker 2: He had a good night.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Three touchdowns, but he talked about his quarterback on his night,
- 40:42Speaker 3: Michael Penix.
- 40:44Speaker 6: He's been phenomenal, man. It ain't really much, you know.
- 40:47Speaker 6: Other words I can say about the way he's been playing,
- 40:51Speaker 6: I appreciate his attitude, how he come in and just
- 40:55Speaker 6: take the field. He's focused and he's ready. He's not
- 40:58Speaker 6: letting nothing that he's been through in his past get
- 41:01Speaker 6: in the way of his goals and what he wants
- 41:03Speaker 6: in the future.
- 41:04Speaker 2: What's interesting about Michael Penix is he is playing well,
- 41:07Speaker 2: but his numbers are not much. It's really been the
- 41:10Speaker 2: run game with Atlanta. So is it just the threat
- 41:13Speaker 2: of an occasional pass to Drake London that is making
- 41:15Speaker 2: the run game so good? Is that why Brian Robinson
- 41:17Speaker 2: is so happy about his quarterback?
- 41:19Speaker 4: I would say if you're a Falcon fan, player, coach, whatever,
- 41:22Speaker 4: your bar is pretty low right now with the quarterback position.
- 41:24Speaker 4: And with Penix, he wasn't declared healthy three weeks ago.
- 41:28Speaker 4: So you're just seeing early of him. I just want
- 41:30Speaker 4: him to play clean game, clean game, clean game, and
- 41:32Speaker 4: let Bijan be the star. And maybe in December or January,
- 41:36Speaker 4: if you're playing in January, Then he could pull some
- 41:38Speaker 4: stuff out like he did at Washington or Indiana.
- 41:40Speaker 2: I also want Brian Robinson to get a lot of
- 41:42Speaker 2: touches to save Bijon. Because if you think you're going
- 41:44Speaker 2: to be a playoff team, you want a fresh Bijon.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Bijon has ascended. I think him and Jameer Gibbs are
- 41:50Speaker 2: 1-2 in the best back in the league. He's incredible.
- 41:53Speaker 2: So Penix is sort of a role player there. If
- 41:56Speaker 2: I'm Michael Penix's fantasy owner, don't expect 350 yards a game.
- 42:00Speaker 2: They don't want to do that, but I think his
- 42:02Speaker 2: presence has made all the difference.
- 42:03Speaker 3: And you love him because he's left-handed, right?
- 42:05Speaker 2: Oh, left-handed quarterback is so gorgeous. Michael Vick, Kellen Moore.
- 42:10Speaker 3: Kellen Moore, shout out.
- 42:11Speaker 2: I was even a Tua fan. Here we go.
- 42:13Speaker 3: It's time for the rando.
- 42:14Speaker 4: Something we see online, we give a shout out to
- 42:15Speaker 4: someone who's doing fine work in the community. Check this
- 42:18Speaker 4: out from the weekend. This guy was stuck on a
- 42:20Speaker 4: flight and found a way to have two laptops and
- 42:23Speaker 4: three seat-back TVs going at one time.
- 42:26Speaker 3: Look, I don't want to use the word hero, but
- 42:28Speaker 3: my gosh, this seems like a good person.
- 42:30Speaker 2: I honestly feel like he should have to pay extra
- 42:32Speaker 2: because that looked like the most enjoyable flight. In fact,
- 42:34Speaker 2: sometimes on a Saturday or a Sunday when things are
- 42:37Speaker 2: busy in my household, I wish I was on an
- 42:39Speaker 2: airplane to watch.
- 42:40Speaker 4: Yeah, if you told me I have a first-class seat
- 42:43Speaker 4: or sit next to that guy with five TVs banging,
- 42:45Speaker 4: I'm sitting next to that guy.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know everybody in the rows behind him
- 42:48Speaker 2: was watching his. You know how you sometimes will watch
- 42:51Speaker 2: someone else's movie? Everybody was watching football. I bet you
- 42:54Speaker 2: he was very popular.
- 42:55Speaker 3: What a hero. All right, coming up next on Not
- 42:56Speaker 3: So Fast.
- 42:57Speaker 4: Constructor criticism and the feel-good is that that wasn't feel-good enough.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Stick around. Much more to come.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Back on Not So Fast, Perloff, and Pabst, NBC Sports Now, Peacock.
- 43:07Speaker 2: All right, every week we do NFL Play of the Season,
- 43:09Speaker 2: and it's a King of the Mountain format. So the
- 43:12Speaker 2: current leader in the clubhouse, of course, is Jamar Chase,
- 43:16Speaker 2: who had that crazy catch in the corner of the
- 43:18Speaker 2: end zone against Houston. Is this beatable? It's pretty good,
- 43:21Speaker 2: and unfortunately, Jamar Chase is out with a scary concussion.
- 43:24Speaker 2: We didn't talk much about that. That was one of
- 43:26Speaker 2: the worst I've ever seen on a face mask. But
- 43:28Speaker 2: this is why, you know, Jamar Chase, the problem with
- 43:31Speaker 2: Jamar Chase is such a high bar. He makes plays
- 43:33Speaker 2: like this look kind of easy, and he does it
- 43:35Speaker 2: all the time.
- 43:35Speaker 3: Yeah, you almost expect him to catch that, which is
- 43:37Speaker 3: a double compliment.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Yeah, okay. So this week, we got a strong contender, though, Paul.
- 43:42Speaker 2: We've talked about him all week. Efton Chisholm III. making
- 43:45Speaker 2: the key catch to help the Patriots beat Buffalo. Not
- 43:48Speaker 2: only was it an amazing catch, it came at a
- 43:50Speaker 2: critical time in the game, in a must-win situation. Felt
- 43:54Speaker 2: like everything was hinging on this play for Drake May
- 43:57Speaker 2: and the Patriots. So what do you think? Efton Chisholm III?
- 44:00Speaker 4: I'm going to give it to Lieutenant Colonel Efton Chisholm III.
- 44:03Speaker 4: He sounds like he's from 200 years ago.
- 44:06Speaker 3: That's nuts. This is the most pub he's going to get.
- 44:08Speaker 3: He's got it for us.
- 44:09Speaker 2: So he was in the same unit with, what is it,
- 44:11Speaker 2: General Andrew?
- 44:12Speaker 3: General Andrew.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Luck. Yes. Efton Chisholm's got it. But again, it's because
- 44:17Speaker 2: of the bar, where the bar is. This is the
- 44:19Speaker 2: best play we've ever seen out of Efton Chisholm. Jamar
- 44:21Speaker 2: Chase does that all the time.
- 44:22Speaker 3: I don't think he's going to top himself next week. Congratulations.
- 44:25Speaker 2: He is now. Efton Chisholm.
- 44:26Speaker 3: Good for him.
- 44:27Speaker 2: All right.
- 44:27Speaker 4: Let's do real quick, Pearl. Clinch or clench. Brewers tonight.
- 44:32Speaker 4: At the Padres, everything's going the Brewers' way. Clinch or clench.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Clench meaning they lose. Yes, they pucker up. I'll tell
- 44:38Speaker 2: you why. Because that San Diego crowd, we've been talking
- 44:41Speaker 2: about it. Oh, man, they are going crazy in San Diego.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I think that carries the Padres to a win or
- 44:46Speaker 2: two at home.
- 44:47Speaker 3: I'm with you.
- 44:47Speaker 4: That crowd is so good. You almost don't want to
- 44:49Speaker 4: pick against the crowd. Plus their team, Michael King, great pitcher.
- 44:52Speaker 4: We've got other pitchers in there.
- 44:53Speaker 2: I still like the Brewers to come out of the series,
- 44:55Speaker 2: but I think that home field does a lot for
- 44:57Speaker 2: San Diego. Maybe get a win or two, bring it
- 44:59Speaker 2: back to Milwaukee.
- 45:00Speaker 4: That was clinch or clench. Now it's time for constructive criticism.
- 45:03Speaker 4: Your thoughts on what we're doing. We've got a couple
- 45:06Speaker 4: to go through this week, Pearl. Here we go.
- 45:08Speaker 3: First one is this.
- 45:09Speaker 4: Still way early from whatever, dude, but the most needy
- 45:12Speaker 4: quarterback team right now, and who would make them better
- 45:15Speaker 4: by drafting one? Right now, the most needy quarterback team
- 45:18Speaker 4: looking forward to April.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Oh, man, that's tough. I would say Miami jumps to mind.
- 45:22Speaker 2: Miami and the Jets are kind of tied at one
- 45:24Speaker 2: and two.
- 45:25Speaker 4: But the Jets have an older guy who they're not
- 45:27Speaker 4: even thinking about keeping. Malik Willis, it's not fair to
- 45:29Speaker 4: judge him, but they did spend on Willis.
- 45:31Speaker 2: They spent some money. But you saw Malik Willis isn't
- 45:35Speaker 2: even playing terrible football. But if you have an opportunity
- 45:38Speaker 2: to get in a quarterback-rich draft and you are so bad,
- 45:40Speaker 2: you have the number one pick, it's a matter of
- 45:42Speaker 2: who's there, Paul. You can't pass on, say, it's C.J.
- 45:46Speaker 2: Carr or Dante Moore or Arch Manning. There's going to
- 45:49Speaker 2: be some great players. Now, you might look ahead to
- 45:52Speaker 2: Keelan Russell and Kamario Taylor, but I think the Dolphins
- 45:55Speaker 2: are the most needy team. Now, the Jets, interestingly, when
- 45:58Speaker 2: Geno Smith is protected, he's not terrible.
- 46:02Speaker 3: But there's no future there.
- 46:03Speaker 2: No future.
- 46:03Speaker 3: And same thing, I would say Arizona Cardinals, they're not
- 46:06Speaker 3: really in play.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Same situation.
- 46:07Speaker 3: Yeah, where you have a serviceable quarterback, but it's time
- 46:09Speaker 3: to move on.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, the three of them are good. Now, what
- 46:12Speaker 2: we've been talking, what if you do have a quarterback
- 46:14Speaker 2: and you just happen to be in a good spot? Tennessee,
- 46:16Speaker 2: I'm looking at you. We talked about it on the
- 46:18Speaker 2: DP show today. Cam Moore better play a little better.
- 46:21Speaker 3: Oh, man, that is a tough one. We've got to
- 46:22Speaker 3: keep an eye on that.
- 46:23Speaker 4: All right. The feel-good, this was so obvious. This is
- 46:25Speaker 4: the feel-good of all feel-goods. Last night, Saints pregame.
- 46:28Speaker 3: Let's take a look. Soak it in. There is Steve Gleason, family, friends.
- 46:35Speaker 3: All the old players are there pregame.
- 46:38Speaker 4: And it's one of those plays in NFL history that
- 46:42Speaker 4: will be remembered forever, whether you're a Saints fan or
- 46:44Speaker 4: you're not.
- 46:44Speaker 3: A Saints fan.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and Steve Gleason, of course, is a symbol of resilience.
- 46:49Speaker 2: It's incredible that he's been able to battle ALS for
- 46:53Speaker 2: so long. You know, it was a night. It wasn't
- 46:55Speaker 2: just about Drew Brees. It was that whole team. And
- 46:58Speaker 2: when Brees was on the Dan Patrick show, we talked
- 46:59Speaker 2: about how those guys are all bonded forever because of that.
- 47:02Speaker 2: What happened in 2006 and also the Super Bowl.
- 47:05Speaker 4: And one thing that stood out, I watched a little
- 47:06Speaker 4: of the Manning cast last night. They had Steve Gleason
- 47:08Speaker 4: on and Steve Gleason was telling jokes in the way
- 47:11Speaker 4: that he could tell jokes now. And it was one
- 47:13Speaker 4: of those things that's just like, boy, you've got to
- 47:14Speaker 4: give him an unbelievable credit for his spirit.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, talk about human will. It's unbelievable. That whole,
- 47:21Speaker 2: and by the way, we love New Orleans, too. Yes.
- 47:23Speaker 2: It was a celebration of the city as well.
- 47:25Speaker 3: Fantastic.
- 47:26Speaker 4: Tune in tomorrow, the Dan Patrick Show. Bill Cower from
- 47:28Speaker 4: Pittsburgh on the Dan Patrick Show, 9 o'clock Eastern. Then
- 47:31Speaker 4: come hang with us right afterwards. Pabst and Perloff, Not
- 47:33Speaker 4: So Fast, NBC Sports, Peacock, and NBC Sports Now.
- 47:37Speaker 2: That's it. We're done.
- 47:37Speaker 3: Enjoy the games.
