- 0:08Speaker 1: Hey, what's up.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Everybody? Welcome in. This is the check O Daily. I'm
- 0:11Speaker 2: Andrew de Checo. I'm talking a little quieter than normal
- 0:14Speaker 2: because I'm inside the Indiana Convention Center. We heard from
- 0:18Speaker 2: Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni and Eagles general manager Howie
- 0:22Speaker 2: Roseman today and both had some pretty interesting things to say.
- 0:26Speaker 2: So we'll start with what Howie Roseman had to say,
- 0:29Speaker 2: and I think most importantly, he highlighted a couple of
- 0:33Speaker 2: free agents. Talking about Brandon Graham. He spoke about Reid
- 0:37Speaker 2: blank and Ship. He spoke about Dallas Goddard and in
- 0:41Speaker 2: terms of Brandon Graham, that which was the first question.
- 0:43Speaker 2: He said, Brandon Graham's always welcome in Philadelphia, called him
- 0:46Speaker 2: an Eagles Hall of Famer, cited his ability to transition
- 0:50Speaker 2: inside a defensive tackle. I don't quite know what direction
- 0:53Speaker 2: the Eagles will go in that regard, but I have
- 0:55Speaker 2: to think that it won't be an easy one. But
- 0:59Speaker 2: as they look to remake that room and get a
- 1:02Speaker 2: little bit younger, it seems like they're trending in a
- 1:04Speaker 2: different direction. But we'll see how things go. With ree
- 1:07Speaker 2: Blanket Ship, he talked about him being an undrafted player,
- 1:11Speaker 2: and really growing into a role as a leader on
- 1:13Speaker 2: this team and what he means to the foot off Eagles.
- 1:16Speaker 2: That's not going to be something easy, an easy decision,
- 1:20Speaker 2: and there could be other teams who are in on that,
- 1:22Speaker 2: so I look at that as something that could be
- 1:24Speaker 2: a little bit challenging.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And then when you get to Dallas.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Goddard, talked about him having a tremendous season, that they
- 1:31Speaker 2: were happy that they were able to work things out
- 1:33Speaker 2: last offseason and how it paid off. Spoke extremely highly
- 1:38Speaker 2: of Dallas Goddard in terms of him as a person,
- 1:41Speaker 2: what he contributes on the football field, and that he
- 1:44Speaker 2: and his agent will be speaking in the neck over
- 1:49Speaker 2: the next few days while they're out here in Indianapolis.
- 1:51Speaker 1: So that's obviously encouraging.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Those conversations always take place, but it's even more amplified
- 1:57Speaker 2: when you're here at the scouting combine because that's where
- 2:00Speaker 2: everybody is and that's where you're able to really get
- 2:02Speaker 2: these conversations and preliminary conversations done. So I view him
- 2:07Speaker 2: as a second priority player behind Jalen Phillips. And I
- 2:13Speaker 2: wrote about Dallas Guyard and his value and how it
- 2:16Speaker 2: it almost was a season that didn't happen. Having eleven
- 2:19Speaker 2: touchdowns career high, sixty receptions career high, and all those
- 2:25Speaker 2: things I think are really important. He also spoke about
- 2:28Speaker 2: the cornerback position and how Quinna Mitchell and Cooper Degene
- 2:35Speaker 2: are players who want to be in Philadelphia for a
- 2:38Speaker 2: long time. They're impactful. He went on to speak about
- 2:42Speaker 2: Cooper Degene in glowing fashion, caught him just a really
- 2:47Speaker 2: good football player, lauded his versatility and things like that.
- 2:51Speaker 1: You can see that Howie Roseman's.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Really prideful in bringing in broke both of those players.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Not many teams it's hard to realize have players of
- 2:59Speaker 2: that caliber, and the Eagles have two of them. But
- 3:02Speaker 2: he also mentioned, and I think this is notable, that
- 3:05Speaker 2: they're going to continue to look at adding to that
- 3:07Speaker 2: position this offseason, whether that's free agency, whether that's the draft,
- 3:12Speaker 2: because you do get the sense that they went into
- 3:16Speaker 2: the offseason last year thinking that they're going to bank
- 3:21Speaker 2: on player development and Keilee Ringo, They're going to go
- 3:23Speaker 2: the cost effective rout and free agency and Dori Jackson,
- 3:27Speaker 2: and that just didn't pan out, and they didn't do
- 3:29Speaker 2: a good enough job there. That was sort of oversight
- 3:32Speaker 2: and They're not going to make the same mistake twice.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Howie Roseman has proven that he doesn't make the same
- 3:36Speaker 2: mistake twice. So I'm expecting the Eagles to add to
- 3:39Speaker 2: that group and give them a more solid option there
- 3:43Speaker 2: to pair opposite Quinnon Mitchell.
- 3:45Speaker 1: He also spoke.
- 3:46Speaker 2: About Jake Elliott, and he talked about how clutch he is,
- 3:50Speaker 2: spoke about getting him off the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad
- 3:54Speaker 2: in twenty seventeen.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And what that whole process, what was like.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Spoke again stood by him, unsurprisingly and said he has
- 4:08Speaker 2: a lot of confidence in Jake Elliott. You can take
- 4:10Speaker 2: that for what it is. It wasn't an overly long answer.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I wrote about that as well for Inside the Birds
- 4:16Speaker 2: dot Com. But it's one of those things where not
- 4:19Speaker 2: a lot needs to be said. Howie Roseman has always
- 4:22Speaker 2: and Nick Sirianni and all the Eagles leaders, they've all
- 4:25Speaker 2: stood by Jake Elliott, and it's not really surprising. But
- 4:29Speaker 2: I still don't think, Yeah, it's great that you have
- 4:32Speaker 2: confidence in him, and it's great that he did all
- 4:34Speaker 2: these awesome things for the franchise in years past, but
- 4:37Speaker 2: it's about the here and now. Jake Elliott's never been
- 4:40Speaker 2: challenged in training camp. I think that could change as
- 4:43Speaker 2: early as this summer. We'll have to wait and see
- 4:45Speaker 2: how that goes. But he did speak about Jake Elliott,
- 4:51Speaker 2: and so I think that was something that was important.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Nick Sirianni was asked.
- 4:56Speaker 2: About Saquon Barkway and how this running system, this new
- 5:01Speaker 2: run scheme could fit with with his skill set, and
- 5:05Speaker 2: as I expected, Nick Sirianni pretty much said that, well,
- 5:08Speaker 2: he's a really good football player, so he's going to
- 5:10Speaker 2: be great, you know, good in anything.
- 5:12Speaker 1: But you know, he he pretty much just talked about
- 5:15Speaker 1: and then it was all in.
- 5:16Speaker 2: It was a little vague about how this offense could
- 5:19Speaker 2: look with Saquon, and Saquon could be even better and
- 5:22Speaker 2: benefit from this new look rushing attack. And Saquon Barkley
- 5:29Speaker 2: wasn't the only player that Nick Sirianni lauded today.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Davonte Smith.
- 5:34Speaker 2: That was something that I walked away thinking, Yeah, that
- 5:37Speaker 2: carries a little bit of weight because you don't often
- 5:41Speaker 2: see Nick Sirianni reacted a certain way. He said, I
- 5:46Speaker 2: think I forget how the question was asked, but it
- 5:48Speaker 2: was more like, do you expect Davonte do.
- 5:51Speaker 1: You feel like Devanta hit his ceiling and he goes, Oh, no,
- 5:54Speaker 1: he goes.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I think he's always going to get better, and especially
- 5:58Speaker 2: in this offense. And so he was a player that
- 6:02Speaker 2: I've talked about I think is going to greatly benefit
- 6:04Speaker 2: from it.
- 6:06Speaker 1: But when you hear Nick.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Sirianni talk about it in that sense, I think that's
- 6:13Speaker 2: you know that that's certainly something that should perk your
- 6:15Speaker 2: ears up. Because he spoke about DeVante Smith being tough,
- 6:19Speaker 2: being super physical, and how he you know, how he
- 6:25Speaker 2: gets involved with the offense, and I think, and I'm
- 6:27Speaker 2: gonna find the.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Quote for you, but what did he say?
- 6:39Speaker 2: He said, No, I think he continually gets better.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I think you saw him have a great year this year.
- 6:45Speaker 2: And even when a guy appears not to have a
- 6:47Speaker 2: good year, you're always looking at it like is his arrow.
- 6:50Speaker 1: On the rise? Is his arrow on the fall?
- 6:52Speaker 2: And even if a guy doesn't have his best year,
- 6:54Speaker 2: he can still be on the rise. Well, I think
- 6:56Speaker 2: we saw DeVante have a great year, and I think
- 6:58Speaker 2: you just continue to see him play better and better.
- 7:02Speaker 1: And I think that's a tribute to who he is.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Guys that are tough, that love football, that are smart,
- 7:07Speaker 2: football players and their talented have a tendency to reach
- 7:10Speaker 2: their ceiling God willing, and I think that's what you're seeing.
- 7:13Speaker 1: You're seeing him continue to get better.
- 7:14Speaker 2: You're seeing him continue to do these things and make plays.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Only he can make on the football field.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And so I just think you continue to see him
- 7:22Speaker 2: on the rise and excite about what will look like
- 7:24Speaker 2: in this new offense.
- 7:26Speaker 1: That we'll have.
- 7:28Speaker 2: He led the Eagles in receiving yards last season slightly,
- 7:33Speaker 2: but I do believe because you can move Tovonte Smith around,
- 7:36Speaker 2: he should greatly benefit from this new look passing attack
- 7:41Speaker 2: that I think you're going to see Sean Manning and
- 7:43Speaker 2: Josh Grizzard, the pass game coordinator, find creative ways to
- 7:47Speaker 2: get Davonte Smith so that he's creating mismatches, move him
- 7:51Speaker 2: around formations. And I do believe that out of all
- 7:54Speaker 2: the players on this offense, that I think are going
- 7:56Speaker 2: to benefit most. Someone asked me this last week, I
- 7:59Speaker 2: said Davonte Smith that Nick Sirianni sort of lit up when.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Asked about that.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I'm still trying to get a good sense of the whole.
- 8:08Speaker 1: AJ Brown thing while I'm out here. I'll continue to
- 8:11Speaker 1: do so.
- 8:12Speaker 2: These are conversations that are gonna They're gonna be ongoing
- 8:15Speaker 2: and they're not gonna go away. But that's something that
- 8:18Speaker 2: I'm gonna try to gather more information on during my
- 8:22Speaker 2: time here and then tomorrow. There will be linebackers and
- 8:28Speaker 2: defensive linemen. So one of the linebackers who I'm going
- 8:32Speaker 2: to make sure that I'm here to talk to is
- 8:34Speaker 2: Josiah Trotter, brother of Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, and great
- 8:40Speaker 2: story there. They also have Eric Gentry from Michigan, who
- 8:43Speaker 2: was a Philadelphia native, had a really good season for
- 8:46Speaker 2: the Wolverines last year. You know, there's a I don't
- 8:51Speaker 2: know that the Eagles need to add a linebacker, but
- 8:53Speaker 2: I really like this group that.
- 8:57Speaker 1: They offer different different attributes.
- 8:59Speaker 2: You see a lot of athleticism, some have good size,
- 9:01Speaker 2: some can rush the quarterback. You can find that in
- 9:04Speaker 2: any group, I understand, but I think that the Eagles
- 9:08Speaker 2: could end up adding another player to that group to
- 9:11Speaker 2: especially if Nikobe Dean isn't in the fold next season.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Hey, everyone, I continue to tell you about the importance

- 11:24Speaker 3: one and up.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And then really defensive the defensive lineman.
- 11:31Speaker 2: There's a lot of edge rushers who I wrote about
- 11:33Speaker 2: on Inside the Birds dot Com that I will certainly
- 11:36Speaker 2: be king in on, including Derek Moore. You know, you know,
- 11:42Speaker 2: there's there's a lot of players that I'll be looking
- 11:46Speaker 2: to to speak to that would fit into that day two,
- 11:50Speaker 2: maybe even Day one mold that has the prototype of
- 11:54Speaker 2: what the Egos typically look for from their edge rushers
- 11:56Speaker 2: that I try to kind of pair it up and
- 11:58Speaker 2: go with players who made some sense. And I did
- 12:01Speaker 2: that also for the tight ends as well. I wrote
- 12:04Speaker 2: about four tight ends that will maybe fit what the
- 12:09Speaker 2: Eagles look to do from an offensive standpoint. And by
- 12:12Speaker 2: the way, with tight ends, I think the Eagles are
- 12:14Speaker 2: going to have to add some more diversity and more
- 12:17Speaker 2: blocking players to that room because they were too pass centric.
- 12:21Speaker 2: They were too one dimensional. Even Dallas got it regressed
- 12:24Speaker 2: in that regard, and they didn't have any variety aside
- 12:28Speaker 2: from Cameron Lattu, who really played fullback.
- 12:31Speaker 1: They didn't use him as a wide versus as a
- 12:32Speaker 1: tight end. E J.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Jenkins is a good blocker, but they didn't really He
- 12:36Speaker 2: was on the practice squad.
- 12:37Speaker 1: They called him up just twice.
- 12:39Speaker 2: And I think if you had to remake this room,
- 12:42Speaker 2: you have to make sure that you're adding players that
- 12:44Speaker 2: can not only catch the football but give you a
- 12:47Speaker 2: little bit more diversity. And I think with Ryan Mahaffey,
- 12:49Speaker 2: with Sean Mannion, with what they're going to ask their demands.
- 12:53Speaker 2: For that position, you have to be able to do
- 12:55Speaker 2: more than just one thing, and that's where I'm curious
- 12:58Speaker 2: to see how they choose to remake it. I'm even
- 13:02Speaker 2: more convinced now that the room's gonna look completely different
- 13:07Speaker 2: than it did last season. But I still think that
- 13:09Speaker 2: Dallas Goddard should be a priority as MS.
- 13:13Speaker 1: In terms of how they fill out the room, well.
- 13:15Speaker 2: That remains to be seen, but I do think that
- 13:17Speaker 2: they're gonna retool that room to better fit what the
- 13:22Speaker 2: offense is expected to do.
- 13:24Speaker 1: More on everything else tomorrow.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I'll be here until Thursday, but for now, that's gonna
- 13:29Speaker 2: do it for this edition of the Czechodaily. I'm Andrew
- 13:33Speaker 2: to Checko and I'll catch you all on the next one.
