- 0:10I'm Drew and I'll be your guide to the night
- 0:13sky for the week of August the 31st to September
- 0:176th. This is a week when the moon climbs from
- 0:21half -lit to nearly full, brightening each evening,
- 0:24and the outer planets take center stage. We'll
- 0:28also wander through a few oft -ignored constellations
- 0:32that hold some real treasures for small scopes
- 0:35and binoculars. Later in the show, we take a
- 0:38look at time from the watches worn on space missions,
- 0:42Martian days, and the time -warping science behind
- 0:46GPS satellites. Whether you're tuning in from
- 0:50the backyard, the balcony, or just your imagination,
- 0:53I'm glad you're here. So find a cozy spot, let
- 0:57your eyes adjust, and let's see what the sky
- 0:59holds for us this week. We start with our nearest
- 1:04neighbor. The moon reached first quarter in the
- 1:07early hours of Sunday morning and now it's waxing
- 1:10steadily through gibbous all week. By Saturday,
- 1:14it's a brilliant lantern nearly full with the
- 1:17official full moon arriving on Sunday the 7th.
- 1:21So your deep sky hunting windows shrink quickly.
- 1:25Favor the first half of the week if you want
- 1:27darker skies after midnight. Farther away, Saturn
- 1:31is a best bet right now. It's glowing in Pisces
- 1:35all evening, a bright golden ember. The rings
- 1:38are still at their thinnest in decades, edge
- 1:41-on and knife -like, but still a thrill in any
- 1:45telescope. Saturn reaches opposition later this
- 1:48month, so it will only get better. Neptune, also
- 1:52in Pisces, is nearby for late -night telescopic
- 1:56hunters. and Uranus comes up after midnight in
- 1:59Taurus. Mars is a low ember in the western twilight,
- 2:04hard to spot but technically present. Meanwhile,
- 2:08the mornings belong to Venus and Jupiter. Venus
- 2:11continues as the dazzling morning star while
- 2:14Jupiter rises earlier each night and sits near
- 2:17Gemini's bright twins, Castor and Pollux. A fine
- 2:21pairing to greet the dawn. If you're out in the
- 2:25early hours Monday morning, keep an eye on Auriga
- 2:28for the Aurigad meteor shower. It's usually faint,
- 2:32but has a history of surprise outbursts. And
- 2:35in the same part of the sky, Comet Lemmon C2025A6
- 2:41is sliding near Gemini. It's faint now, more
- 2:45a telescopic quarry, but worth noting as it brightens
- 2:48toward October. The brighter moon pushes us towards
- 2:52star clusters, doubles, and brighter objects
- 2:54that punch through moonlight. In Delphinus, the
- 2:58little diamond -shaped dolphin high in the southeast,
- 3:01you'll find two globular clusters, NGC 6934,
- 3:07a compact grainy ball, and NGC 7006, a distant
- 3:14halo globular so far away it appears as a mere
- 3:17smudge in the eyepiece. Slide westward to Sagitta,
- 3:21the tiny arrow pointing between Aquila and Volpecula.
- 3:26Here you'll find M71, a cluster that sits right
- 3:30on the border between open and globular, granular,
- 3:33loosely packed, and striking at medium power.
- 3:38Up in Volpecula, telescopes reveal NGC 6940,
- 3:43a lush field of faint suns. In Scutum, the wild
- 3:48duck cluster M11 is one of the sky's finest open
- 3:52clusters with stars packed like glitter. And
- 3:56for a challenge, hunt nearby for IC1295, a delicate
- 4:01planetary nebula that responds beautifully to
- 4:04an O3 filter. Faint little Equelius, the little
- 4:09horse near Delphinus, offers a fine double star,
- 4:13Epsilon Equilii, a classic seeing test. And in
- 4:18Lacerda, the lizard crawling high overhead later
- 4:21at night, NGC 7243 sprawls as a pleasing scattered
- 4:27open cluster. The Milky Way still arcs bright
- 4:31through the south in early evening, but the moon's
- 4:34glow will wash it out more and more as the week
- 4:36goes on. Take advantage of the first few nights
- 4:40after midnight for darker glimpses, then shift
- 4:42your focus to planets, clusters, and lunar landscapes
- 4:46once the moon dominates. Next week brings the
- 4:50full moon and elsewhere in the world a total
- 4:53lunar eclipse, but it's not visible here in the
- 4:56Americas. You may have heard the Latin expression
- 5:00tempus fugit, which simply means time flies.
- 5:04We're going to examine that in a very literal
- 5:07way as we explore watches in space, atomic clocks,
- 5:11and how time passes on other planets. That's
- 5:15coming up after the break. Stay with us. Welcome
- 5:31back! Let's take a break from the sky and talk
- 5:34about something we can't escape, no matter what
- 5:37planet we're on. Time. Here on Earth, time feels
- 5:42fixed. The sun rises, the sun sets, and our clocks
- 5:46keep a steady rhythm. But once you leave Earth,
- 5:50or even just start thinking like an interplanetary
- 5:53explorer, time starts to slip and bend in ways
- 5:56that are both subtle and profound. Let's start
- 6:00with Mars. A Martian day, or what scientists
- 6:03call a Sol, lasts 24 hours, 39 minutes, and 35
- 6:08seconds. Only about 40 minutes longer than an
- 6:12Earth day, but enough to wreak havoc on human
- 6:15schedules. Whenever NASA sends a rover, like
- 6:19Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, or Perseverance,
- 6:23the mission team shifts to Mars time. Their schedules
- 6:26drift by 40 minutes each day, so within a couple
- 6:30of weeks, scientists are working the night shift,
- 6:33then the day shift, then back again. It's a jet
- 6:36lag without ever leaving Pasadena. Families of
- 6:40engineers even reported being pulled into this
- 6:43Martian rhythm, living in a haze of perpetual
- 6:46time zone changes. It's known as Martian insomnia.
- 6:50The engineers at JPL actually commissioned Mars
- 6:54watches. They look like ordinary chronographs,
- 6:57but the second hand ticks just a little slower,
- 7:00stretching the day to match a soul. It's one
- 7:03of the few times in history people have worn
- 7:05a watch calibrated to another planet. And that
- 7:09brings me to a portion of the show I call Watches
- 7:13in Space! First off, I'm a geek when it comes
- 7:18to watches in general. Watches worn by astronauts
- 7:21are a niche interest of mine, one that peaked
- 7:25a few years ago when I saw in person the Omega
- 7:28Speedmaster worn by astronaut Charles Duke. I
- 7:32once had the opportunity to meet shuttle astronaut
- 7:35Clayton Anderson, and I spent most of that time
- 7:38talking to him about ham radio on the ISS and,
- 7:42of course, his Omega X -33 watch. The tradition
- 7:47of timekeeping in space runs deep. Early in human
- 7:51space exploration, NASA selected the Omega Speedmaster
- 7:55Chronograph, a fully mechanical hand -wound watch.
- 8:00Mechanical watches can't crash or short out in
- 8:03a vacuum or when exposed to radiation. Additionally,
- 8:07the Speedmaster has an acrylic crystal, that's
- 8:10the glass over the dial, which is shatter -resistant,
- 8:14unlike the sapphire crystals that are often used
- 8:16in luxury timepieces. In old mission photos,
- 8:21you can see astronauts wearing the Speedmaster
- 8:23strapped over the wrist of their spacesuit during
- 8:26Gemini, EVAs, and on moonwalks. My favorite image
- 8:30of the Speedmaster was taken on Apollo 11, being
- 8:34worn by Buzz Aldrin inside the command module.
- 8:38Once on the lunar surface, Neil Armstrong actually
- 8:41left his watch in the lunar module as a backup
- 8:44timer, so it was Aldrin's that became the first
- 8:48watch on the moon. If you've seen the film Apollo
- 8:5213, you might remember when a crucial course
- 8:55correction burn was timed by the stopwatch hand
- 8:58on the Speedmaster, or Speedy, as it's affectionately
- 9:02known in watch nerd circles. Omega has embraced
- 9:07this history and still produces the original
- 9:09Moonwatch to this day. They include a NASA -style
- 9:13nylon strap you can attach for real astronaut
- 9:17authenticity, along with the engraving First
- 9:20Watch on the Moon on the case back. If you have
- 9:237 grand or so burning a hole in your pocket,
- 9:26it can be yours. Or you can buy the plastic look
- 9:30-alike Moon Swatch for about $270. This one is
- 9:35a special edition from Omega's parent company,
- 9:38The Swatch Group. If you grew up in the 80s,
- 9:41you might remember the swatch watch, those colorful
- 9:44plastic timepieces that were all the rage, along
- 9:47with neon colors on everything, parachute pants,
- 9:51jelly bracelets, and trapper keepers. The Omega
- 9:55isn't the only moon watch. Bulova makes a version
- 9:58inspired by watches worn on the Apollo 15 mission,
- 10:02although it eschews the mechanical innards for
- 10:05a super -accurate, high -beat quartz movement.
- 10:08NASA isn't as picky about watches nowadays. Crews
- 10:12have worn zens, fortices, and even digital watches.
- 10:16Today, astronauts often bring their personal
- 10:19watches like Garmin's and Apple watches. But
- 10:22the core idea is the same. You need reliable
- 10:25timekeeping when every maneuver, every engine
- 10:28burn, and every oxygen check is a lie for death.
- 10:32And there's just something kind of cool about
- 10:35knowing that something as everyday and ordinary
- 10:37as a wristwatch can be used as a tool for space
- 10:41exploration. But what happens when you need extreme
- 10:45precision? Right now your phone's navigation
- 10:48app depends on clocks in space, the atomic clocks
- 10:52onboard GPS satellites. Each satellite carries
- 10:57multiple clocks tuned to within billionths of
- 11:01a second. The system works by measuring how long
- 11:04it takes signals to reach your device. Even the
- 11:07tiniest error in timing would put you miles off
- 11:10course. And here's where relativity sneaks in.
- 11:14Einstein showed us that time doesn't tick the
- 11:17same everywhere. If you move very fast, your
- 11:21clock slows down compared to someone standing
- 11:24still. That's special relativity. If you climb
- 11:28higher out of a planet's gravity, your clock
- 11:31actually ticks faster, and that's general relativity.
- 11:36GPS satellites are in both situations at once.
- 11:40They're zipping around Earth at nearly 9 ,000
- 11:43miles per hour, which makes their clocks run
- 11:45a little slow. But they're also about 12 ,500
- 11:50miles above Earth's surface in weaker gravity,
- 11:54which makes their clocks run a little fast. Add
- 11:57the two effects together, and the fast wins.
- 12:00Their clocks tick about 38 microseconds ahead
- 12:03each day compared to clocks on Earth. That sounds
- 12:06tiny, but if engineers didn't correct for it,
- 12:10your location on Google Maps would drift by several
- 12:13miles in a matter of hours. In other words, without
- 12:16taking relativity into account, we'd all be lost.
- 12:20So, whether it's engineers struggling to live
- 12:23on Martian time, astronauts strapping speed masters
- 12:27to their sleeves, or atomic clocks whispering
- 12:30to your smartphone, space reminds us that time
- 12:33is not universal. It's a local rhythm, tied to
- 12:37gravity, velocity, and the turning of worlds.
- 12:41Here on Earth, we march to a 24 -hour beat. On
- 12:45Mars, the tempo slows by 40 minutes. In orbit,
- 12:49atomic clocks tick just differently enough to
- 12:52keep us humble. Time is not some absolute metronome
- 12:56in the background of the universe. It's pliable
- 12:59and contextual. And as we push farther into space,
- 13:03we'll discover just how many ways we can bend
- 13:06it, stretch it, and live by it. If the stars
