- 0:02- There's a small circle of people who truly
- 0:04- understand what it takes to lead a health
- 0:05- system right now. The decisions are enormous.
- 0:08- The variables are constantly shifting, and the stakes
- 0:11- of getting a call wrong don't stay contained.
- 0:14- That's not a complaint. It's a structural reality.
- 0:17- And it's why the most effective c suite
- 0:19- leaders are deliberate about where they go to
- 0:21- pressure test their thinking.
- 0:22- Becker's fourteenth annual CEO and CFO roundtable
- 0:26- brings together more than 1,500
- 0:28- executive level attendees
- 0:30- and nearly 400 speakers for four days built
- 0:32- around growth, financial sustainability,
- 0:35- workforce strategy, and the leadership questions that don't
- 0:38- have easy answers.

- 0:50- This is Laura Dierda with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:53- podcast. I'm thrilled today to be joined by
- 0:55- doctor Rob Sumter, president of St. Joseph Hospital
- 0:58- and executive vice president and market chief operating
- 1:01- officer for Ascension Illinois. Rob, it's a pleasure
- 1:03- to have you on the podcast today.
- 1:05- Yes. It's great to be here. Thank you.
- 1:08- Absolutely. Now I'm excited to dig a little
- 1:11- bit deeper into some of the cool things
- 1:12- you're doing at St. Joseph Hospital and around
- 1:15- the region. But before we dive in, can
- 1:16- you tell us a little bit more about
- 1:18- yourself and your background?
- 1:19- Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah. Again, Rob Sumter, originally
- 1:24- from Sumter, South Carolina decided to join the
- 1:27- Navy there right out of, high school and
- 1:29- had an opportunity to see the world that
- 1:31- time.
- 1:32- That's when I got into,
- 1:35- health care. I was a health care administrator
- 1:38- within the military
- 1:40- there and then decided to
- 1:43- exit the military where I started working at
- 1:46- hospitals as a COO
- 1:48- and then, eventually
- 1:49- as president and CEO.
- 1:51- I did,
- 1:52- information technology, also served as a CIO, chief
- 1:56- information officer
- 1:57- They're doing many of my
- 2:00- visits to different hospitals.
- 2:02- I've been with Ascension for three years.
- 2:05- Oh, wow. That's amazing to hear. And I
- 2:07- know,
- 2:08- Ascension has certainly grown and developed and evolved
- 2:10- during that time. So,
- 2:12- exciting to be part of that in in
- 2:14- the leadership team. Now I'm curious. Can you
- 2:17- give us a quick state of being? And
- 2:18- what's going well this year, and what are
- 2:20- you focused on for the rest of 2026?
- 2:23- Okay.
- 2:24- Well, this year, we're focused on strengthening
- 2:27- our foundation and sharpening our execution,
- 2:30- how we execute on
- 2:32- things that we've identified in terms of our
- 2:35- strategy.
- 2:36- We make sure that we're able to move
- 2:37- those forward.
- 2:38- We've made a significant
- 2:40- strides in in, like, team development
- 2:43- because one of the things, the foundation, is
- 2:45- is making sure that your team is there
- 2:47- and you have the right people on your
- 2:49- team to be able to move things forward.
- 2:51- We continue to focus on our patient care
- 2:54- and our operational efficiencies.
- 2:57- One of the things I'm especially
- 2:58- proud of is our ability to navigate,
- 3:01- you know, health care with a constant evolution
- 3:04- of changes
- 3:05- and making sure that we stay disciplined
- 3:07- on our priorities
- 3:09- and maintaining the momentum that we've created even
- 3:12- when we are faced with these many uncertainties
- 3:15- that are happening
- 3:16- within our societies, within health care as well.
- 3:20- For the rest of 2026,
- 3:23- it's about discipline execution. We're just gonna continue
- 3:26- to focus on that.
- 3:28- We're gonna double down on investing in our
- 3:31- people, our associates that we have in driving
- 3:33- operational excellence.
- 3:35- We're going to
- 3:36- leverage the technology,
- 3:38- look at AI, how we can use it
- 3:40- to its full potential.
- 3:42- And our goal is it's clear. Right?
- 3:45- We are focused on long term sustainability
- 3:48- growth,
- 3:49- not just the quick
- 3:51- wins and, you know, the short term gains.
- 3:55- Absolutely. I think that makes a lot of
- 3:57- sense. And, you know, I love that focus
- 3:58- as you just mentioned, long term sustainability,
- 4:02- not just,
- 4:03- quick gains in in in short things that
- 4:05- will make a difference in the short term,
- 4:07- but, not necessarily the long. And so when
- 4:09- you think about sustainability, what does that mean
- 4:12- to you? What do you have to do
- 4:13- right now when you're thinking, you know, are
- 4:15- you looking,
- 4:16- two, three years down the line, five to
- 4:18- ten? What, really is that lens you're looking
- 4:20- through, and how do you, are you mindful
- 4:22- of the resources and things you need today
- 4:24- while you're planning long term as well?
- 4:27- When we look at sustainability
- 4:29- and growth and where we're going,
- 4:31- you know, it used to be five years
- 4:33- down the road,
- 4:35- but we now have to look at the
- 4:37- here and now, which is the
- 4:39- two year, three year mark to make sure
- 4:41- that we're
- 4:42- constantly
- 4:44- in touch with what's going on and making
- 4:45- those changes so that we can adjust so
- 4:47- that we're not in a mode of survivability,
- 4:51- but in a mode of sustainability. And that's
- 4:53- why we have to continue to make the
- 4:55- shift that gets us to that sustainability
- 4:58- level.
- 5:00- Got it. That makes a ton of sense.
- 5:02- You know, and and really truly seems like
- 5:04- a smart way to go about things. Now
- 5:06- what are some of the big headwinds that
- 5:07- you're keeping your eye on and preparing for?
- 5:10- When you look at headwinds, you know, it's
- 5:12- one of the things that we
- 5:14- talk about, you know, in our monthly meetings,
- 5:16- you know, what headwinds did you have? We
- 5:18- look at our budget, what headwinds you have
- 5:20- to meeting your budget. When we look at
- 5:22- our strategic
- 5:23- go growth, what headwinds do you have in
- 5:27- reference to strategic growth and and being able
- 5:29- to do the things that we have set
- 5:31- out to do so that, you know, we
- 5:33- can continue to
- 5:34- execute on those. It's
- 5:37- the biggest one that we have is the
- 5:39- relentless pace of the change in our is
- 5:42- our biggest challenge that we have. You know,
- 5:44- things are constantly changing, so we have to
- 5:46- change and we have to adjust. And many
- 5:48- things that we put out, that's why I
- 5:50- say it can't be five years out because
- 5:52- things change. And so you have to be
- 5:54- in the here and now, the two, three
- 5:56- years, and make those adjustments as you go
- 5:58- because you have to be in one year
- 6:00- looking into the next year preparing for the
- 6:02- year after that. And so whether it's the
- 6:05- economic shifts, following consumer expectations,
- 6:08- or the rapid
- 6:09- advancement in AI,
- 6:11- we must stay
- 6:13- agile to make sure that we're there, we're
- 6:15- in it
- 6:16- for that sustainability to be to keep going.
- 6:20- But the real test for us is is
- 6:23- not just
- 6:24- reacting to the change.
- 6:26- It's we have to continuously
- 6:29- anticipate the change and make sure that we
- 6:31- put ourselves in a position
- 6:33- to get a hurt ahead of that. And
- 6:35- and so when that curve of change comes,
- 6:38- we gotta make sure that we're ahead of
- 6:40- that curve with it. And
- 6:42- so we're we're trying to tackle everything by
- 6:44- staying deeply connected with our patients and investing
- 6:48- in our associates, as I said earlier, technology,
- 6:51- and those are the things that we're looking
- 6:53- at. And we have to make sure that
- 6:55- our strategy remains flexible.
- 6:57- We can't put something in place and say,
- 6:59- we can't change it. This is where we're
- 7:01- going. Although the world around us is changing,
- 7:04- this is our strategy. We have to make
- 7:06- sure that it's flexible enough for us to
- 7:08- to adapt quickly
- 7:10- while making sure that we we stay focused
- 7:12- on our mission and our values and what
- 7:14- we're doing.
- 7:16- I think that makes a lot of sense.
- 7:17- And it's always that balance between, you know,
- 7:20- looking at innovation, wanting to move quickly,
- 7:23- and and change and transform while at the
- 7:25- same time not doing so, so quickly that
- 7:28- you're putting yourself at risk or losing sight
- 7:30- of the mission and the things that are
- 7:31- most important
- 7:32- in those outcomes. So,
- 7:34- you know, I think that's always a balancing
- 7:36- act. And how do you keep your team
- 7:38- focused, especially when there's so many headwinds coming
- 7:40- down the pipe?
- 7:42- It's it's a balancing act. You know, you
- 7:45- and and many times we talk about it
- 7:47- because when you you
- 7:49- set out to do this and then you
- 7:51- realize, okay. We've gotta make some adjustments. We
- 7:53- gotta make some changes. And and that's where
- 7:55- the agility comes in for being able to
- 7:58- make those changes
- 7:59- as needed and to understand why you're making
- 8:02- those changes because it all gets you to
- 8:04- the same goal
- 8:06- of the
- 8:07- sustainability to make sure that you can get
- 8:09- there. But you've gotta make a lot of
- 8:11- adjustments and changes along the way. And so
- 8:13- you really have to continue to meet with
- 8:15- your staff,
- 8:17- the employees,
- 8:18- keep them informed of what's going on, the
- 8:21- changes.
- 8:22- If there are delays and things that we
- 8:24- set out to do, we have to explain
- 8:26- what's going on, why is there a delay,
- 8:29- and and how we're gonna get past it
- 8:31- when the delay is no longer there.
- 8:34- So it's it's constant and continuous communication.
- 8:38- Absolutely. That seems to be, you know, the
- 8:40- name of the game so much here and
- 8:42- especially in leadership is that clear, constant, transparent
- 8:46- communication to the teams. Now where do you
- 8:48- see some of the best opportunities for growth
- 8:50- over the next two to three years?
- 8:52- You know, our biggest
- 8:54- growth opportunity
- 8:56- lies in in synergy between
- 8:58- using
- 9:00- technology and human expertise, which brings that all
- 9:03- together
- 9:04- with what we call the AI and what's
- 9:06- happening with AI and the automation that it
- 9:08- has,
- 9:09- you know, to really
- 9:10- start looking at what are those routine tasks
- 9:14- that we're doing on the human side that
- 9:17- we can actually put AI in to do
- 9:19- so that we can free the human
- 9:21- up to be able to do those things
- 9:23- that we really need to do. For example,
- 9:26- you know, they may be spending a whole
- 9:28- lot of time doing things in documentation in
- 9:31- the EMR when they can actually spend that
- 9:33- time at bedside with the patient and talking
- 9:35- with the patient and caring for the patient
- 9:38- and having the patient feel that they're their
- 9:40- one and only patient
- 9:42- as opposed to, you know, the little task,
- 9:43- the small task that they're doing, those kind
- 9:45- of things as we go through.
- 9:47- So, again, it's making sure that we empower
- 9:50- our teams to focus on what matters most.
- 9:53- You know, high value care and stronger patient
- 9:55- relationships is what we really wanna focus on.
- 9:58- And then, of course, the growth will come
- 10:01- from that. You know, these connections because when
- 10:04- patients come in and they're admitted in the
- 10:05- hospital,
- 10:06- they feel a deep connection.
- 10:08- They'll come back if they have to and
- 10:11- when they have to. And, again, expanding our
- 10:14- health care capabilities and developing the next generations
- 10:17- of leaders
- 10:18- is one of the things that we gotta
- 10:19- continue to focus on in health care because
- 10:22- if we don't begin to focus now,
- 10:26- we won't have those leaders in the future.
- 10:28- So success isn't just about adopting the new
- 10:31- technology
- 10:32- for us. It's about using it thoughtfully
- 10:35- to drive better outcomes for our patients,
- 10:38- for
- 10:39- people, our associates,
- 10:41- and the community
- 10:42- in which we serve.
- 10:44- I love that. And then, you know, to
- 10:46- your point, having the technology there and being
- 10:48- able to leverage it smartly in the right
- 10:50- way and optimize,
- 10:51- truly within, you know, the,
- 10:54- broader team and workforce makes a big difference.
- 10:56- And I I love your thoughts on the
- 10:58- high value care as well.
- 11:00- You know, in I can imagine in some
- 11:02- ways, there's a a change when you're on
- 11:04- the caregiver team and, you know, even for
- 11:07- for patients too, and you're thinking from that
- 11:09- high value care lens versus, you know, just
- 11:12- just on the volume side. So,
- 11:14- how do you really, I guess,
- 11:17- share that with your team, and what do
- 11:19- you really see as being the transformative aspects
- 11:22- of providing high value care and making sure
- 11:25- that everybody is thinking strategically on the along
- 11:28- those lines?
- 11:30- Well, I I think you touched on it.
- 11:32- One of the things that you we have
- 11:33- to look at is that
- 11:35- we're not in a state of transition.
- 11:39- We're in a state of transformation.
- 11:41- And and where you again, I talked about
- 11:44- it earlier, the uncertainties
- 11:45- of what's going on and uncertainties of health
- 11:48- care.
- 11:49- We're
- 11:49- transforming,
- 11:50- and we're making those change, but we have
- 11:52- to continuously
- 11:54- keep our eyes on what it is that
- 11:56- we do. What's our mission? What's our vision?
- 11:59- It's the patients that we take care of,
- 12:01- and we have to make sure that we
- 12:02- do that. And we sit down with our
- 12:04- associates, a part of that communication
- 12:06- process,
- 12:07- making sure that we keep that in the
- 12:09- middle of the table, the patients always in
- 12:11- the middle of the table, what we're doing
- 12:13- as we continue to focus through that.
- 12:16- So
- 12:17- it is important that we continue
- 12:20- to execute on those priorities that we put
- 12:22- in place. It's important that we continue to
- 12:25- focus on sustainability
- 12:28- as we continue to
- 12:30- evolve in health care.
- 12:32- I love it. It it makes so much
- 12:34- sense. You know, it's really an inspiring message
- 12:36- when you think about, everything that's happening today
- 12:39- and what you're able to accomplish now,
- 12:41- you know, with the technology in patient care.
- 12:44- Now before we wrap up, I'm curious, who
- 12:46- do you admire as a leader, really, from
- 12:48- any industry and why?
- 12:50- Oh,
- 12:51- well,
- 12:53- you asked that question.
- 12:54- You know, so many come to mind,
- 12:58- but the one that
- 12:59- comes to the top really is,
- 13:02- you know, one that I admire and and
- 13:04- what's happening is Eduardo Corrado,
- 13:06- who is our CEO
- 13:09- for Ascension.
- 13:11- And he has fundamentally
- 13:13- transformed
- 13:13- our culture,
- 13:15- you know, while
- 13:17- continuing to focus on operational excellence. And and
- 13:21- he's he's focused on proving that, you know,
- 13:24- if you invest in your people and and
- 13:28- you keep your people at the forefront, they'll
- 13:30- keep your patients at the forefront. They'll take
- 13:33- care of your patients. And his style is
- 13:35- focused on, you know, empathy,
- 13:37- be curious,
- 13:38- you know, and
- 13:40- empower your associates,
- 13:42- your people so that they are entirely
- 13:46- compatible with
- 13:48- to doing what the mission is and making
- 13:50- sure that those things happen. It is not
- 13:52- a focus on just the financial performance,
- 13:56- But if you invest in your people, your
- 13:58- people will invest in your patients. And then
- 14:01- the results of that, of course, will be
- 14:03- getting us to
- 14:04- sustainability, financial performance, and the things that we
- 14:07- need to be around for the next one
- 14:09- hundred year plus.
- 14:12- That's fascinating to hear and fantastic. I know
- 14:14- I've had the opportunity to, speak with Eduardo
- 14:17- Conrado in the past and interview him, and
- 14:19- you're right. I mean, he's such a a
- 14:21- great leader,
- 14:22- and has such great energy for what he's
- 14:24- doing. And so amazing to see the way
- 14:26- the culture has shifted and changed in Ascension
- 14:28- and exciting to think about the possibilities of
- 14:30- future.
- 14:31- Yes. I I certainly agree with you. You
- 14:33- know? And what stands out with him is
- 14:36- the rare ability for him to be able
- 14:38- to balance the long term vision, you know,
- 14:41- sustainability
- 14:42- with the discipline and day to day execution.
- 14:45- He is successful at helping to lead us
- 14:48- through all of these changes, you know, without
- 14:52- ever losing sight of our culture
- 14:54- and and the vital lessons that every leader
- 14:57- in health care should learn.
- 15:00- I I love it.
- 15:01- Thank you, Rob, so much for joining us
- 15:03- on the podcast today. This has been a
- 15:05- really, fantastic conversation, and I look forward to
- 15:07- seeing you as well in person at our
- 15:09- CEO, CFO roundtable. I know you'll be speaking
- 15:11- on a panel, so we'll dig a bit
- 15:12- deeper into some of these themes. And it'll
- 15:14- be truly great to hear from you and
- 15:16- see you in person.
- 15:18- Alright. Looking forward to it. Thank you.
