- 18:09of three examples? Our next story is titled Twas the
- 18:14Night before Thanksgiving, and it was published by Scholastic, originally
- 18:22published in hardcover by Orchard Books, has a copyright year
- 18:26of nineteen ninety two two thousand and four and the
- 18:33author is Dave Pelke. Twas the night before Thanksgiving, and
- 18:39all through the trees the follies were spinning aloft in
- 18:43the breeze. Eight children had boarded their school bus with grins,
- 18:47in hopes that a field trip soon would begin. They
- 18:50sang as they wrote through autumn terranks, while visions of
- 18:54drumsticks danced in their brains. Verse through the woods with
- 19:02winding and weaves, their school bus sailed on through the
- 19:05new fallen leaves. When out on the road they arose
- 19:09such a clatter they threw down their windows to see
- 19:13what was the matter. When what their wondering eyes should
- 19:18they see that a miniature farm in ate tiny turkey,
- 19:22and a little old man, so lively and rugged they
- 19:25knew in a moment it was farmer mic Nuggets. He
- 19:28was dressed all in denim from his head to his toe,
- 19:31with a pinch of polyester and a dash of vel crow.
- 19:35And then in a twinkling they heard in the straw
- 19:38the prancing upon of each little claw more rapid than chickens,
- 19:42his cockerels that came. He whistled and shouted, and he
- 19:46called them by name, Now Ollie, now Stanley, now Larry,
- 19:50and mow On, wally On, beaver On, Shemp, and grout show.
- 19:55The turkeys were chunky, with smiley beaked faces, and they
- 19:58greeted the children with downy embraces. So after the barnyard
- 20:04they ran, and they flew, and they gobbled and giggles,
- 20:07as friends sometimes do. Then somebody spotted and axe by
- 20:12the door, and she asked, Farmer Nugget, what is that.
- 20:15For the blink of his eye and a twist of
- 20:17his head, the old farmer.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Told a grim tale of dread.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Tonight, said Mike Nugget, These feathery beasts will be chopped
- 20:27up and roasted for Thanksgiving feast. The children stood still
- 20:30as tears filled their eyes. Then they clamored aloud in
- 20:34a chorus of cries. Oh dear, cried Mike Nugget. Now
- 20:39what shall I do? So he dashed to the well,
- 20:42and the teacher went to and they fetched some water
- 20:45fresh from the ground, in hopes that a swig might calm.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Every one down.
- 20:52Speaker 1: And when they returned to quiet the manner, the children
- 20:55were calmer and mysteriously fatter.
- 20:59Speaker 2: The boys and the girls up their drinks in.
- 21:01Speaker 1: The hay, then thanked old Macnugget and wattled away. They
- 21:07limped the school bus, all huffing and puffing. It's not
- 21:10easy to walk with hot turkey stuffing. And then as
- 21:14the school bus drove off in the night, Mike Nugget
- 21:17looked around, not a turkey in sight. Twas the night
- 21:22before Thanksgiving, and the stars up above shone down on
- 21:25the school bus, abounding with love. The very next evening,
- 21:30eight families were blessed with eight fluffy Thanksgiving turkeys as guests.
- 21:35They feasted on veggies with jelly and toast, and everyone
- 21:38was thankful. The turkeys were most so Each one gave
- 21:43thanks for love and for living, and they all had
- 21:46a wonderful happy Thanksgiving. Our next book is titled Happy
- 21:53Thanksgiving and it was published by the Rosen Publishing Group.

- 22:10Speaker 2: What is Thanksgiving?
- 22:11Speaker 1: Thanksgiving is a holiday when people gather to eat a

- 22:29as food, homes, family, and friends on Thanksgiving. The date
- 22:33of Thanksgiving changes from year to year, but it always
- 22:37falls on the same day of the week. United States,
- 22:40the fourth Thursday in November is Thanksgiving, and Canada, Thanksgiving
- 22:44is the second Monday in October. It is a time
- 22:49for family fun and feasting gathering for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is

- 23:05Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days of the year
- 23:08to travel. Airports are always very crowded around Thanksgiving, since

- 23:15plane on that weekend. Many people spend Thanksgiving with their families.
- 23:20People who have small families or families who live far
- 23:23away often decide to celebrate with friends instead. Whom do
- 23:27you celebrate Thanksgiving with? Wherever you celebrate Thanksgiving, you will
- 23:34likely have a big feast. The chief dish at most
- 23:38people's Thanksgiving dinner as turkey. While most of the turkeys
- 23:41people eat or raised on farms, there are also wild turkeys.
- 23:46While turkeys live in North America. Both mal wild turkeys
- 23:50and mail turkeys on farms have folds of skin called wattles,
- 23:54which hang over their necks. However, only wild turkeys are
- 23:58able to fly. Everything Giving Americans eat more than five
- 24:02hundred and thirty million pounds of turkey. Vegetarians often eat
- 24:07tofu in the shape of a turkey for Thanksgiving. Mail
- 24:11turkeys are also called gobblers or tom turkeys. Tom turkeys
- 24:16can push their tail feathers up into a fan. How
- 24:22to make a pine cone turkey, Let's make one in
- 24:27honor of Thanksgiving. First, start your pine cone turkey by
- 24:30fine in pine cone. The bits coming out of a

- 24:44a bill and a eye. Color the turkey's head. Next,
- 24:48draw a fan shape. This will be a turkey's tail.
- 24:51Draw in the shapes of the feathers, color in the tail,

- 24:57Slide the head into the skills at the flat end
- 25:01of the cone slide the tail between the skills at.
- 25:04Speaker 2: The cone's tip.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Turkey is just one of many foods people eat at Thanksgiving.
- 25:11Lots of Thanksgiving foods are closely tied to turkey. For example,
- 25:17stuffing is a mix of bread, vegetables, and seasoning that
- 25:21is cooked inside the turkey. The juices that run out
- 25:24of the turkey are used to make a topping called
- 25:26gravy that is poured over the turkey. People also put
- 25:30a topping called cranberry sauce on turkey. Cranberries are redberries
- 25:34with a sharp taste. Many people in their Thanksgiving beast
- 25:37with pumpkin pie. People also eat pies made with apples
- 25:41or nuts called pecans. Vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and
- 25:46green beans are part of most people's Thanksgiving feasts. Eating
- 25:54a big meal is just one of many Thanksgiving traditions.
- 25:57Watching football games on tea is a big part of
- 26:01many Americans Thanksgiving Day. There are always two football games
- 26:04on TV on Thanksgiving. A football team called the Detroit
- 26:08Lions plays in one of the games, the Dallas Cowboys
- 26:11playing the other. Parades are another Thanksgiving tradition. Many cities
- 26:16and towns hot Thanksgiving parades. The largest Thanksgiving parade is
- 26:20the Mazy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It is held every year
- 26:24in New York City. The parade has marching bands, well
- 26:27known seniors, floats, and giant balloons. Thanksgiving traditions have built
- 26:33up over time, but the holiday dates back to sixteen
- 26:36twenty one. In the fall of sixteen twenty one, a
- 26:40group of English settlers held a feast with a group
- 26:42of Wampanong Native Americans in Plymouth, Massachusetts. This feast is
- 26:48often called the First Thanksgiving. The English settlers had arrived
- 26:52in Massachusetts in November of sixteen twenty The winter that
- 26:56father was cold. The settlers did not have enough food.
- 27:00Any settlers died during the winter. The following year, the
- 27:03Indians showed the settlers how to find and grow food.
- 27:06That file, the settlers had a good harvest and celebrated
- 27:11with a feast. Though the English settlers in the Native
- 27:16Americans had a feast, it was different from a modern
- 27:18Thanksgiving meal. For one thing, their harvest celebration lasted three days.
- 27:23There were more than one hundred people at that feast.
- 27:26The settlers' houses were small, so they set up tables
- 27:29and ate in the street. No one knows if they
- 27:32ate turkey at the feast. We do know that the
- 27:34settlers and the Native Americans ate fish, duck, and venison
- 27:38or deer meat. They also ate vegetables like corn, onions,
- 27:42and squash. They ate most of the food with their
- 27:44hands because they did not have forks. Thanksgiving traditions have
- 27:49changed a lot since its beginning one hundreds of years ago. However,
- 27:53people still use this holiday to think about all the
- 27:56good things in their lives. Many people also think about
- 27:59those who have been less fortunate than them. They collect
- 28:02food to give to people who do not have enough
- 28:05to eat. Some people work in a soup kitchen on Thanksgiving.
- 28:09Soup kitchens are places where poor people can get a
- 28:12free meal. This is just one way to honor this holiday.
