- 2:29Excited to share with you my friend Tracy Terrace, she is an
- 2:35author and a marriage and a relationship therapist and we
- 2:40get to talk about her book called many voices one.
- 2:45Truth sifting through competing noise that interferes with the
- 2:49savior's voice and it's so good. You guys, we talked about how to
- 2:53know you're listening to God's voice and determining truth from
- 2:57the lies and Techniques for healthy thought patterns and
- 3:03basically how she puts it is how to turn off the broadcast of the
- 3:09enemy's voice and turn up the voice of the Savior, Jesus
- 3:14Christ. And I love this conversation.
- 3:17We all need God's voice to be so much louder than what is going
- 3:24on around us. So here we are.
- 3:26We're going to dive into the conversation that I have with
- 3:28Tracy. Hi Desi.
- 3:30Welcome to she speaks life. I am so excited.
- 3:33You're here today. Thank you for having me.
- 3:36Jamie, I'm excited to be here. Yeah, I love the title of your
- 3:41book, many voices one truth sifting through competing noise
- 3:47that interferes with the savior's voice and before we
- 3:51dive in I love to start us off with asking each guest.
- 3:56What is your favorite scripture verse and why Jeremiah 33:3 and
- 4:03it says call to me, and I will answer you and tell you things,
- 4:07wonderful things, you do not know.
- 4:09And the reason that's my favorite voice, scripture verse
- 4:13is because it's a promise from God.
- 4:16Like, if we call to him and ask him whatever it is, we need to
- 4:20know. He promises to tell us the
- 4:23things that we don't know and the things that we need to know,
- 4:28you know, and he's kept it. Thomas and and one of the
- 4:31reasons I wrote the book is to help people to tune in to the
- 4:34frequency of his voice. Yeah.
- 4:36And I think that's a common thing that most people struggle
- 4:39with like, how do I know it's from God?
- 4:42How do I know that it's his voice and not my voice or, You
- 4:48Know, The Enemy attacking me? So, you know, let's talk a
- 4:51little bit about your background.
- 4:53You're a licensed therapist. Your you have a masters in
- 4:56Clinical Psychology in Physically in a marriage and
- 5:02family and you have a bachelor's degree in journalism and
- 5:06broadcasting and so you help people work through the negative
- 5:13thoughts and you know, patterns that can just really cause
- 5:19confusion for most people and really you know, stop them from
- 5:25growing. And so what you do is you go
- 5:28through these steps And these tools that will help us to grow
- 5:34in our relationship with God and connect with him.
- 5:37So, I would love for you to just start us off with maybe a little
- 5:43more about who you are, your story.
- 5:46What brought you to write this book?
- 5:49Well, I am a child of God and a wife and mother.
- 5:53I'm a disciple of Jesus and I might, I'm originally from new
- 5:59Orleans Louisiana. So, I grew up, you know, in the
- 6:02suburbs outside of New Orleans and moved to California.
- 6:07In my adult years. And I live here with my husband
- 6:12and my youngest daughter. My oldest daughter.
- 6:15She's married and has a child. So I'm also a grandma.
- 6:19And the thing that brought me to read this book are to write.
- 6:23This book, was one of my younger sisters, had a crisis.
- 6:28And my response, my internal response had me really
- 6:33evaluating what I believed about myself and and we're you know,
- 6:39looking at what thoughts that I have that contribute to that
- 6:42belief, you know? And and I thought I had dealt
- 6:44with all of that because one of the reasons I became a therapist
- 6:48is because I went to therapy and it worked.
- 6:51So at first, I would send everyone to the therapist that I
- 6:54went to. But then one day God said to me
- 6:57I need you to be a therapist. It was out of the blue and I ran
- 7:02it by my husband and three of my closest friends and each of
- 7:05their response was something along.
- 7:07A lines of I could totally see you doing that.
- 7:10So, I just applied to grad school and got into Azusa
- 7:14Pacific, which is a private Christian University.
- 7:18Because if I was going to study psychology I wanted it to be
- 7:20from a Biblical and Christian Perspective so that's where I
- 7:24went. But getting back to writing the
- 7:27book, I old really old beliefs started surfacing beliefs that
- 7:34you know that I was evil and no good.
- 7:36And and what was Triggering that was because when I was there, I
- 7:40had a memory of being told when I was a little girl that I was
- 7:44going to die young. And although I had done away
- 7:47with that belief and put it aside, it was still deep in the
- 7:52recesses of my mind and of my heart.
- 7:55And so seeing my one of my baby sister's almost died.
- 7:59It brought that belief that, you know, I would die.
- 8:03And so I wanted to run away from that.
- 8:05It was just very It was a it's a lot to see, one of your
- 8:09siblings, go through something. And so, deep down, I just wanted
- 8:13to get back home to California to my loving husband and the
- 8:17safety of my own home and my children.
- 8:20And so it made me feel bad. Like it made me feel bad that I
- 8:24wanted to get away and get back to my safety.
- 8:27So it made me feel so guilty and sad.
- 8:32And I started having suicidal thoughts which just seemed to
- 8:35come out of nowhere but it Was all of this stuff, the childhood
- 8:39memory, wanting to escape it, feeling bad for wanting to
- 8:42escape it. And so, I called a friend of
- 8:44mine, and she listened patiently and she said, you Tracy, none of
- 8:49what you're feeling, has nothing to do with all this stuff that's
- 8:53going on. It has more to do it what you
- 8:55believe about yourself. And so that was really, you
- 8:59know, how when something says something and it resonates so
- 9:02profoundly that it just kind of slows you down on the inside and
- 9:06slow motion. Yeah.
- 9:07It got me to thinking like, you know, I do believe that I am
- 9:10saved, but why do I still believe maybe I am going to
- 9:13help? Why do I still believe I am evil
- 9:15or no good or something like that?
- 9:18And so it really made me sit down and really think through
- 9:21all of that and I realized, well, duh, A lot of people, I
- 9:25mean, my whole profession is about, you know, working with
- 9:29people's beliefs and how to manage their thoughts.
- 9:32You know, most of us think that the things that threw us for a
- 9:35loop are the situations. In circumstances that we go
- 9:38through but they're not. It's what we think about those
- 9:41situations and circumstances is how we're processing it.
- 9:44What thoughts that you know from our past are being re triggered
- 9:48and how do we manage and cope with that is what will cause us
- 9:52to feel a certain way or what will cause us to behave a
- 9:56certain way. So I just thought that you know,
- 9:59this book is really needed and I need to write it like if the
- 10:04original working title of the book was called belief.
- 10:07Beyond belief because it's one thing to believe what God says.
- 10:12But it's another thing to believe it so much that it's in
- 10:16the fiber of your being that, you know, what he says is true,
- 10:20you know, I'm totally and that's where the transformation
- 10:24happens, right? It is, yeah.
- 10:27So what do you do personally to get into the frame of mind of
- 10:32thought examination? Yeah, my my thought life is part
- 10:38of my daily quiet time. Like each morning, I get up and
- 10:42I set aside time to be with the Lord in scripture and to pray
- 10:47when I was younger as a Christian, I would be praying
- 10:51for like an hour and a half two hours.
- 10:54And I just I realized that I couldn't do that.
- 10:57Like I had, I lost, I would get up super early in the morning.
- 10:59So I started dividing Like Mondays.
- 11:02I pray for certain things and people to all the way.
- 11:05Ooh, the week, you know, I'll pray for certain things, but
- 11:07part of my self care and spirit care is if, you know centering
- 11:13prayer, which is a form of contemplative prayer, nowadays,
- 11:17we call it mindfulness and meditation, but mindfulness is
- 11:21not the same as meditation. It's just mindfully being aware
- 11:24of what you're doing in the moment and where you're at and
- 11:27meditation is more, you know, contemplative or are being in
- 11:31prayer. So one of the forms that I you
- 11:33and I don't do it every day. It's just different forms of
- 11:35contemplative prayer that I engage in to help with my
- 11:41thought processes and to manage my thoughts and keep myself,
- 11:44calm, and centered and centering prayer is one of them where
- 11:48you're just sitting quietly for 20 minutes, you can sent to the
- 11:51Lord Jesus presence, and you allow him to bring up whatever
- 11:56he's going to bring up, as you're sitting quietly with your
- 11:59eyes closed, you have a focus word or phrase and when my My
- 12:05mind wants to roam and Go in different areas.
- 12:08I'll bring it back, bring my mind back to that, Focus word or
- 12:12phrase and there. And then when I come out of it,
- 12:15I'll journal what came to me, sometimes I'll start journaling
- 12:18in the middle of it because it's coming to me, you know, in such
- 12:22a profound way that I have to write it down.
- 12:24But I think just like exercise and sleep, the things that we do
- 12:28everyday like we rest every day that keeps us going and rested
- 12:33and functional. We we exercise everyday that
- 12:36keeps us healthy and balanced praying and and using tools like
- 12:43contemplative prayer keeps the anxiety at Bay, it keeps your
- 12:47mind clear enough so that you can focus on one thing and one
- 12:51thought at a time instead of being pulled in a million
- 12:54directions, at one time. Yeah, so good.
- 12:58I mean that's how I learned. How to hear God's voice.
- 13:02I remember intentionally sitting there and just waiting and I
- 13:08started to practice like the training, my heart ears.
- 13:12You know, to hear his voice and I I didn't have a word
- 13:18necessarily like you were saying to focus on which I think is so
- 13:22great. But as my thoughts would Drift.
- 13:26I would go back to God. I want to hear your voice.
- 13:29I want to know you and, you know, just giving that time to
- 13:34God. To just sit, there is so
- 13:36essential and hearing his voice. I love and your book, then
- 13:41analogy of voices, and broadcast networks.
- 13:46Can you expand a little bit more on that?
- 13:51Well, when I grew up, we had only four television channels.
- 13:55Cable was around when I grew up, but we didn't have cable.
- 13:59We only had ABC, CBS and NBC. They were called The Big Three.
- 14:06And then, we have the P, public one PBS.
- 14:09And so, I thought, you know, one day I was thinking about how,
- 14:14you know, just as you're watching, television, and tuned
- 14:17into this network, or that Network, you get to choose which
- 14:22one you'll tune in to whether it's ABC, CBS or NBC, BC or
- 14:26whatever. So, in the same vein, whatever
- 14:29brought is broadcasting to your mind, whatever networks are
- 14:33vying for your attention because all of the television networks
- 14:36by for your attention as well with programming and commercials
- 14:39and whatnot. But the networks that the major
- 14:43networks and our minds that Vie for our Attention, our self
- 14:48Satan savior or Society, so self Satan Society.
- 14:56Savior in the book. I have save your last because
- 14:58yeah, Jesus is competing for your attention to, but he is the
- 15:02still Small Voice and you have to choose to tune into him.
- 15:07You have to do these contemplative things.
- 15:09You have to be in the word because the other voices are
- 15:13very loud and very demanding. Like the South voice can either
- 15:18be good for you or bad depending on what experience or what from
- 15:23your past and even present is informing you The Satan voice,
- 15:27that's the enemy of your soul and that's the biggest liar of
- 15:30all. Three the self voice can lie to
- 15:32based on your experiences and and whatnot and Society can be
- 15:37either good or bad as well. Like depending on what you're
- 15:40tuned into. Like, you know, there's a lot of
- 15:43people on social media that do really good things and get out
- 15:47really good information to try to help people and that's fine.
- 15:51You know, when you're listening to that and getting good from it
- 15:54or applying it in a great way. But if it's leading you to
- 15:59self-destructive, behaviors are competition or being hard on
- 16:03yourself, then it's not a good source for you.
- 16:07The only voice that is good all the time and that is true.
- 16:11All the time is the voice of the savior.
- 16:14He is the one that you can depend on 24/7.
- 16:18And the reason I say 24/7 is because even when you're
- 16:21sleeping, you know, the Bible says, you know, the, you know,
- 16:25God counsels. Your heart when you're asleep.
- 16:27So even when you're sleeping you can depend on the savior's
- 16:30voice. Yeah.
- 16:32Wow that's good. And they all start with us like
- 16:36you happen to bring all that to the letter as so that we could
- 16:41remember those those those so good.
- 16:44Okay. So do you have a set of
- 16:46scriptures to recommend somebody who on how to manage their
- 16:50thought life? Well, my favorite one, Jeremiah
- 16:5433:3, Romans 12:2, renew your mind.
- 17:00Any scripture that talks about, you know, casting down
- 17:03imaginations. Like in second, Corinthians 10:5
- 17:07like those are some of my favorites but if your viewers or
- 17:11listeners were to Google, you know, scriptures that helped me
- 17:15with my thought life. There's you can pull up so many
- 17:19different ones, but the thing about reading those scriptures
- 17:23is you have to do what they say. You have to To apply what you
- 17:27learn and so what that means, like, say for instance, in
- 17:30Romans, where it says, renew your mind, what that practically
- 17:36means is to identify any thought or thought process that needs to
- 17:41go, that's not edifying. You that's not helping.
- 17:45You draw closer to God and to others.
- 17:47That's not helping you believe about yourself.
- 17:51What God says to believe, you write it down and then you find
- 17:55a Truth and I would find a truth from your life.
- 17:59Like if there is one person in your life that has edified you,
- 18:03that has given you the communication that you are loved
- 18:06that you are wanted that you are adored, it doesn't have to be a
- 18:09parent, it could be a sibling, it could be a loved aunt or
- 18:13Uncle. It could be a teacher.
- 18:15And then I find a scripture that says the same thing, you know,
- 18:20you are mind and I love you. I believe that's an Isaiah 40,
- 18:24you know. It's the only We place it says,
- 18:27I love you. I mean he's telling us, he loves
- 18:29us throughout the word but going find that scripture where God
- 18:33says I love you you know and make sure it's a version like an
- 18:37IV that will have it written that way you know.
- 18:41So it's all at your Reese is all at your fingertips.
- 18:45One of the interventions that I do in my practice with teenage
- 18:49girls is I have them right, create a jar.
- 18:54And in that jar, we Found scriptures that tell them who
- 18:58they are. According to what Christ says,
- 19:01according to what God says, and we tear them into strips, fold
- 19:05them up and put them in the jar. And so they get to take the jar
- 19:08home. And on any given day every day,
- 19:12they should, you know, pull out one and take it.
- 19:14Read it, take it with them to school, slip it in their back
- 19:17pocket, so they could pull it out every once in a while.
- 19:20But on specially on days that's particularly hard or difficult,
- 19:25they can take They can do that and pull it out to remind
- 19:27themselves of who God says they said, you know, says they are.
- 19:32And even saying, I believe, I believe Lord God help me
- 19:36overcome my disbelief. And I got that idea from my
- 19:40youngest daughter when she was, I think about in fourth or fifth
- 19:43grade she made, what's called what she called a boredom jar.
- 19:47And in the boredom jar, she had written down on pieces of paper,
- 19:51different things that she can do when she was bored during the
- 19:55summer months. Make sure you can't go to the
- 19:56beach every day and all day. You can't go to the park every
- 19:59day all day and so she would have called out different things
- 20:02that she can do, so that she wouldn't give in to vorderman.
- 20:05I just thought that was genius and started using it with some
- 20:08of the older girls in my practice.
- 20:11So God, okay. Let's talk about how your book
- 20:15can draw a reader into a deeper relationship with the Lord.
- 20:20And more connected was the process and that So when you get
- 20:26the book, what I would do is read it like, don't skip over
- 20:31the first chapter is because the first few chapters talk about
- 20:35the differences between each voice and they, that they help
- 20:38you to recognize the thoughts that you're having and where
- 20:44each of, those thoughts are coming from weather itself.
- 20:47Whether it's Satan, whether it's Society or whether it's the
- 20:50Savior and then later in the book and really throughout the
- 20:54book, there are different Exercises that you can do.
- 20:57And many of those exercises are based on what I do here in my
- 21:02therapy practice, when I'm helping people.
- 21:04A lot of them come from something called cognitive
- 21:07behavioral therapy, which is a form of therapy.
- 21:09I use in my practice, cognitions have to do with your thoughts
- 21:12and how your mind works and behavior has to do with the
- 21:15behaviors. You choose as a result of what's
- 21:17running through your mind. So a lot of the exercises are
- 21:21rooted in CBT, which is cognitive behavioral therapy.
- 21:25And or and or prayer practices that I've learned on prayer
- 21:32Retreats that I've attended over the year, most of over the
- 21:35years, most of them are contemplative forms of prayer.
- 21:38So when you read it, don't just take note of it like, don't just
- 21:43because when you read it, if it is something that your soul
- 21:47needs, it will resonate with you.
- 21:49And you'll think, oh, what a great idea.
- 21:50This is so good, but it's only information unless you apply it.
- 21:55So In many of the practices I number them out, 1234 do this.
- 22:00Then this actually sit down and do it, you know, even if the
- 22:04doing is recognizing of thought and changing it to a different
- 22:09thought or are an eternity of thought, and it's good to find
- 22:13not something that's just positive because positivity
- 22:16helps, but it only helps for a little while.
- 22:18Your mind will go back to, you know, what it believes.
- 22:22So the idea is to change the belief using the the truth of
- 22:26the word of God and in some cases using the truth of what
- 22:29you've experienced. Like, my grandmother thought
- 22:32that I was the end all and be all, you know, she just thought
- 22:36I was the best thing since life, sliced bread.
- 22:39And I forgot that I was valued along the way going to school
- 22:44and, you know, experiencing things through my peers and
- 22:48growing up and experiencing disappointment, somehow I forgot
- 22:52that I was loved dearly loved and wanted.
- 22:54I started Remembering that when I became a disciple of Jesus,
- 22:58and when I started reading the Bible and applying it, but it's
- 23:02like, you, you have to apply whatever it is, you learn, so
- 23:06that you can change the structure of your thinking
- 23:09patterns change the structure of your cognitions.
- 23:13Yeah. Get to the root of it because
- 23:16otherwise it's just like a Band-Aid.
- 23:18Like you're saying, it's temporary.
- 23:20Okay. What is the biggest tool someone
- 23:22can have for managing their thoughts?
- 23:26Truth. Truth is the biggest tulle.
- 23:29Yeah, thinking through what am I thinking about and writing it
- 23:32down and then asking yourself. Well when were there times in my
- 23:37life? What is the evidence that this
- 23:40isn't true? Or what is the evident that this
- 23:43hasn't always been true? Or this isn't always true and
- 23:47then if you can find a scripture to match it and the internet,
- 23:51the algorithms are very Savvy. You can put in whatever you You
- 23:55want, however, you want to phrase something and you'll find
- 23:59you. No answer.
- 24:00So if you put in scriptures for helping me change my thought
- 24:03patterns it'll lead you to scriptures for that.
- 24:07So if the belief that your fighting is I am not good
- 24:11enough. If you were to think it through
- 24:15times of, well I was able to get through this project or
- 24:19accomplish that task or I've gotten alkyl AIDS from my peers.
- 24:23My peers. Think I do well.
- 24:25You can also write those down, you know, and examples of those
- 24:29because the brain wants evidence.
- 24:31Like, it doesn't just want, you know, you to just say positive
- 24:34things, it wants evidence. So when you're doing this, what
- 24:37you're doing is challenging that thought or belief and then right
- 24:40into Google or whatever is your favorite search engine
- 24:45scriptures? That tell me that I am good
- 24:48enough and then you will get some of the scriptures that I
- 24:51named earlier and and others like there's one site.
- 24:56I can't think of it. I think it's called Bible verse.
- 24:58But it's whatever you put in they'll give you 100 scriptures
- 25:01for it. Somehow they're able to find 100
- 25:04scriptures for that that topic, you know.
- 25:08Yeah. Another one I really like I
- 25:09think as God questions or something questions about God
- 25:14and you can just type in a question and then it comes with
- 25:19bit of wisdom but then scripture verses all to back it up and so
- 25:24that was a good. One.
- 25:26Okay, so how would somebody if they're, you know, learning to
- 25:30hear God's voice? How can they determine God's
- 25:33voice their own, boys? The enemy's voice?
- 25:37Yeah, well, each each of the voices have their own chapter in
- 25:41the book and I go, you know, through it quite extensively on
- 25:45self-esteem, society and savior. But I'll give you like a little.
- 25:49I'll give your listeners a little something from each self.
- 25:54In the book, I talk about how self can be the self channel.
- 25:57Can be an affiliate of either the god, Network or the Satan
- 26:02Network, depending on what it is you're thinking about if you are
- 26:06having thoughts that are disparaging and that tear you
- 26:09down, it's probably coming from your experiences of people
- 26:14telling you that or you developing beliefs and making
- 26:17agreements with that belief over time.
- 26:21And so that's usually from the Satan voice.
- 26:23If a network, if you are able to yes, I am worthy.
- 26:30Yes, I do have value, let that may be coming.
- 26:34That's coming from the Holy Spirit and it may also be coming
- 26:37from the self affiliate, but it's from the edifying
- 26:40experience incident at a supplying people in your life.
- 26:44Satan will always lie to you. You know, he rushes you in the
- 26:48in the book. I say he's like a used car
- 26:50salesman. Even where, you know, it's like
- 26:52act now by now, like anything. That's any thought that's
- 26:56running through your mind to get you or force.
- 26:58You to make some kind of decision without using your
- 27:02god-given ability to Think Through.
- 27:04Like we are the only creatures created by God, that you know,
- 27:08can think through and God wants you to think through.
- 27:11He gave you a mind so that you can use it and turn things over
- 27:16in your mind, because what is good for one person may not
- 27:19necessarily be good. For you.
- 27:21So if there's thoughts that's getting you to just make some
- 27:25kind of rash or rust decision, more than likely, it's coming
- 27:29from Satan. Thoughts of comparison, thoughts
- 27:33of society is the only the other one that can be an affiliate of,
- 27:38you know, Satan or savior. I think God uses media and
- 27:44social media, like people vilify, media, and social media.
- 27:47And there's a lot of disparaging things that come through the
- 27:50Media and through social media but there's a lot of good as
- 27:54well. You kind of have to weigh what
- 27:57you're thinking about and what you're feeling.
- 27:58If it's if you see something in the media or social media that
- 28:03prompts you to take care of yourself or give to others or
- 28:07take care of others. And that's a good thing.
- 28:09But if you're comparing or you feel less than or you feel not
- 28:12as good as then, don't listen to that the savior's voice you
- 28:17know, will tell you that you are wanted you or a And You Are
- 28:22Holy, you know, through your connection with Christ through
- 28:25the Holy Spirit and things like that.
- 28:28But again, like each of the chapters go into much more
- 28:31detail about how you can learn how to tell the difference
- 28:34between each one of them. Yeah, it's so good.
- 28:38Is there anything else you'd like to share about the book?
- 28:41And I always like to end us with a take away something that the
- 28:46listener can ponder on or take action in.
- 28:49Yeah, what I hope. For this book is that people
- 28:52will start to listen to the savior's voice more than they
- 28:56listen to all of the others. And what I would want your
- 29:00listeners to know is that you are loved, you are wanted you or
- 29:05dearly want it. Like, I, I mentioned Jeremiah
- 29:0933:3 as my favorite scripture. I have lots of favorite
- 29:13scriptures but one of my new favorite is the entire John 14
- 29:18and 15, because it's Jesus, talking.
- 29:20Through that whole thing. If you want to know some of the
- 29:23stuff that the Savior has to say, refer to John, you know, 14
- 29:27and 15. And he's talking about how much
- 29:30he wants to give to you. Like if you ask in his name and
- 29:34for his sake, he's talking about how much, you know, you are
- 29:39wanted and how much you are loved and and the role of the
- 29:43Holy Spirit and tuning in, you know, to the holy spirit.
- 29:46So referring to those two chapters and really taking your
- 29:51time, those two chapters will help you to grow to believe and
- 29:56hopefully making agreement. Because the way it happens, the
- 29:59way life happens, is something will happen to you.
- 30:02You will have a thought about it, you will develop a belief
- 30:05and if that belief is there long enough, and it's, then you make
- 30:08an agreement with it. And once it's an agreement, it's
- 30:11all in the neurocircuitry of your brain and that works both
- 30:15ways. It works with negative and bad
- 30:17stuff, but it also works with affirming and Things as well.
- 30:22Train yourself to make agreements with the truth of
- 30:26God's word and make agreements with the truth of who he says
- 30:30you are. And so I that's what I really
- 30:32hope that, you know, people who read the book and people who
- 30:35listen to this cast will take away for themselves.
- 30:40Amen, it's so good. Thank you, Tracy.
