- 0:00With Gino. Yeah here, but your head said on your cheap yeah,
- 0:06agreed. Agreed with Gino. Where you'ming the head coach of the Huskies is
- 0:10a busy week, big week, come, big stretch coming up here.
- 0:13You got Seaton Hall Wednesday, South Carolina coming up Sunday, then Xavier,
- 0:19Georgetown, Craton, all pretty much bunched together in a two week span.
- 0:23I know, I know. It's that time of the year and the stretch
- 0:26run to use. Do you see the light at the end of the tunnel
- 0:28or do you see the freshman hitting the wall at this point, especially Ashlean
- 0:33and KK because they've logged a lot of minutes. Yeah, I mean this
- 0:38is late for them to be hitting the wall. If they're hitting the wall
- 0:41now, it's late. Usually that would have come earlier, and it did.
- 0:47It did come for for you just didn't see it, maybe as as
- 0:52much as you know we see it every day in practice. But you know,
- 0:58Ashes played too many minutes. Nika could play that many minutes because she's
- 1:03had three four years of building up that stamina to be able to play those
- 1:10forty minutes. When you're a freshman, you don't know how to put you
- 1:14you don't know how to get You don't know how to play forty minutes.
- 1:17You just don't. And plus you waste a lot of energy running around going
- 1:21where's my man? You know. So there's just a there's just nothing you
- 1:29can do about it. It is what it is, and they have to
- 1:32get through it. And it's not it's not easy, it's not I was
- 1:37just telling Bob, you know, we're going down. We're going down this
- 1:42weekend, you know, to play at South Carolina. And it made me
- 1:47think that the last time we had a team that wasn't missing a starter or
- 1:55two was when we were in the bubble. That's four years ago, and
- 2:04pages Paige and Alia have only played with some semblance of a whole team in
- 2:13the bubble when there was nobody around. And you know, we went to
- 2:15the NC Tournament, you know, we went to the final four, and
- 2:23I would I would like to even the year we played in the National Championship
- 2:29Game, which is only two years ago, right right, It sounds like
- 2:34it feels like it was a hundred years ago. But we were in the
- 2:36National Championship Game two years ago, and we didn't have Dorka because she broke
- 2:40her wrist in the NC State game, right, and as I don't know
- 2:47what what she had. I don't I don't know whether it was COVID or
- 2:51something that they hadn't invented yet. I don't know what she had, but
- 2:53she had something, and I was sick as a dog on the sideline,
- 2:57and I was not one hundred percent. Everybody, you know, you know
- 3:02you when you've been doing this long enough. It's funny. When we were
- 3:06talking before we went out to the game, I said to the coaches,
- 3:09now only you guys would know this, well except all the people listening on
- 3:14TV. I mean I get it or on the radio red. But I
- 3:17remember saying to the to the to the other coaches, I said, you
- 3:21know, we're so beat up, we're so sick. Everybody's got something.
- 3:24I said, we're either going to get blown out, or you know what,
- 3:30maybe we might win a game, like in double overtime or something like
- 3:34that. And they started the game off like twenty to two, oh the
- 3:39championship camp, and you got it down to like was it like six?
- 3:44Yeah, we got it down third. Yeah, we got it down to
- 3:46six. But you know, you just know that it's it's it's it's so
- 3:54frustrating to, you know, play with like one hand tied behind your back
- 4:01and Walls is funny, you know, typical walls Walls goes. Yeah.
- 4:06I feel so sorry for Gino. It's just so sad. You know,
- 4:12he's missing all these guys. Now he has to play Page and Aaliyah forty
- 4:15minutes. I feel so bad for him, you know, But the reality
- 4:20of the situation is nobody should be playing as many minutes as they're playing.
- 4:26Last year, Hoody did our strength and conditioning coach, Andrea Hoody, she
- 4:30did an analysis and she figured out that Nika played the equivalent of nine more
- 4:38games than any other player in college basketball. That's a lot. Yeah,
- 4:44that's a grind. That's a grind. And you're in an unusual spot this
- 4:46year too, because of the rotation that you have. It's mainly seven,
- 4:50it's three seniors and four freshmen. You've never had that. No, Well,
- 4:59I shouldn't say that. I shouldn't say that. In nineteen ninety one
- 5:02when we went to No. No. In nineteen eighty eight eighty nine,
- 5:05we won the national the biggest championship for the first time, we had seven
- 5:11freshmen. Yeah. Meg Pattison, Hi, Meg we had seven freshmen and
- 5:23four returning players. Wow, and we won the biggest championship. That was
- 5:30the last time we counted on freshmen that much. And Carrie was so that
- 5:33was Carrie was a sophomore. Carrie was a software Carry was a sophomore.
- 5:36Lauristis was a sophomore. And those seven freshmen came in and they just kind
- 5:42of infused the program with like a lot of like really cool stuff. And
- 5:49we ran a kind of offense where you know, only slow kids can run
- 5:55Megan them and we shot a lot of threes and and we won a lot
- 6:00of games. Well, it's funny because you were and I were talking about
- 6:02this off air. I mean, you were doing a lot of what Villanova
- 6:05used to do, a slow pace. Debbie was on last week with Wayne.
- 6:10Debbie got a new job. She's now in the Windom now is the
- 6:12director of Parks the Wreck and Wayne. She was on Wayne Norman show.
- 6:15Wayne works at Wyline Willemantick. He's the morning show host there has been forever.
- 6:19And she talked about those early days where you know, getting recruited by
- 6:24you. It was I guess between the Yukon and Syracuse for Debbie that's what
- 6:29she tells us. Told Wayne anyways, I didn't I didn't even know that.
- 6:31Yeah, a lot of these guys, you know, Debbie, Meg,
- 6:38Wendy Davis, we didn't. We we didn't have to beat out Stanford
- 6:46and Virginia and do for those guys, trust me on that. It was.
- 6:50You know, we were recruiting at a whole different level back then.
- 6:54We were recruiting kids that, you know, we thought they were good and
- 6:57we thought they could make us better. But they weren't the kind of kids
- 7:00that the absolute best teams in America were recruiting. No, but I thought
- 7:05they were good, and eventually, you know, when they all got to
- 7:09be juniors and seniors, we went to the Final four. And we're the
- 7:12first team north of the Mason Dixon line to ever go to the Final Four
- 7:16with not a single player in the top one hundred in the country coming out
- 7:20of high school. So for all those knuckleheads out there, I think the
- 7:25only people I can coach are great players. Trust me, I've coached other
- 7:28players. Yeah, And I think to them from that team were broadcasting.
- 7:31Now, Meg's been doing it for forever and ever there you go, they
- 7:35found something they were great at there you go. You can hear RAG tomorrow
- 7:41night on S and Y too. They got it, They got that game
- 7:43tomorrow night. All right, more with Gino on the Wells Fargo you kind
- 7:46of women's basketball Coaches Show ahead of the men and Butler coming up at the
- 7:49top of the hour. Here Onlearfield,
