- 3:37League and eventually spend a year with his apartment. He'd never forgotten tell me,
- 3:42Johnny down set out, it didn't take you long to get here,
- 3:45for reason why it should. But that's why I called you boy always on
- 3:49the ball? Yes, sure, I said to myself, if anyone could
- 3:52get in there and pitch, it's Johnny Dollar, a man with a real
- 3:54batting antry. And guess what the godney? Sure? So what's the catch,
- 4:00Haley? That's what fine? Hayley, Dad or alive? I sure
- 4:02hope it's alive, Daddy. Wouldn't be much good to the spots or your
- 4:06company, who'd have to pay out at least fifty grand? Or have you
- 4:11forgot about that? Oh good gravy. No, I'm a company man,
- 4:14first, last and always. In fact, I'm the bird who told Hailey
- 4:16that policy about six months ago. Today, me and the boys at the
- 4:20Lions gave him a testimonial dinner. Who's the beneficiary? Well, the original
- 4:25beneficiary was Hailey's sister names Mildred Womack, lives in the overall that Hailey change
- 4:30the beneficiary. Yeah, whose figures to collect now? Is white? Hernie
- 4:34w Papers didn't say anything about him being married. I know, well it
- 4:40happened recently, since he's been in Tucson for spring training with the rest of
- 4:44the team. Oh well, maybe he's on his honeymoon. Not Hailey.
- 4:47Why not, because, like I said, the team's been in spring training.
- 4:51Last week they started playing exhibition games. Hailey wouldn't miss those for anything
- 4:56in the world, and according to Slash Lewis, he's the spartan manager.
- 4:59Hailey was gonna stand up against the Red Legs last Wednesday, but nobody's seen
- 5:02him since Tuesday night. I want to wait. Yeah, sure it is,
- 5:06but a stilm no sign. He isn't taken a little vacation, Old
- 5:10Johnny, Come on, this man's an athlete. The precision the team built
- 5:14the pitch baseballs. Did you know he started playing when he was eight years
- 5:17old? Loves the game, yes, sir, and he doesn't think of
- 5:20anything ever except playing it. I wouldn't say that, m he got married
- 5:27to me. Oh always you know what I mean? Okay, bird,
- 5:31what do you got to go on? Well? Maybe I got her right
- 5:34here. Telegram came in late yesterday. Read it. Feel sure my brother
- 5:43Harry Haley has been murdered. Please conduct her investigation before settling any claim on
- 5:48his estate, Signed Mildred Walman. What did you say she wants or she
- 5:55lives in Boma Hall? But that why I came from Tucsa. You have
- 5:58her address out there. Yeah, I'm going to have a talk with her.
- 6:00That's the way I'd play it. And Johnny me in the spot was
- 6:04and of course the company are counting on you. You get a hit,
- 6:08Okay, coach, I'll go my best expense account at him two tenth cents
- 6:16for an afternoon paper. It contained a follow up story on Hailey's disappearents with
- 6:21a quote from his sister Milders, but again there was no mention of Haley's
- 6:25wife had him three one hundred and forty eight dollars there, travel to Tucson
- 6:29and can't bread to the Western Hotel. I called the cat the Grande Hotel
- 6:32where Mildred Walmack was saying, then rended the car and drove out to it.
- 6:36It was on the highway to no Galley's, and she was waiting for
- 6:39me, A tall, thin woman, obviously Haley's oldest sister. I followed
- 6:44her in and sat down on a stiff chair between the ben and a dressing
- 6:47You ever see hair play now, I am. I'm afraid that's something I've
- 6:53missed. Oh, this is what he looks like. I've seen pictures of
- 6:59him in the papers, news, real and some man, a Payton,
- 7:03true pregnant. All that publicity about the contract, That what started the trouble.
- 7:09You he'd never reached the big league to be alive today? Do you
- 7:13really believe he's dour? My telegram with yours? Man? But do you
- 7:17have any proof of that? Have all I need? Would you mind telling
- 7:20me what it is the record of my brother's doing before I came to where
- 7:26it's Oh, I didn't get out here because the day before he disappeared.
- 7:29I came because Harry wasn't writing to me like he was supposed to. So
- 7:31I hired me a detective to find out what he was doing with his time.
- 7:35You hired a detective to follow your brother? They no law, No,
- 7:41especially when I suspected something was wrong. Yeah, I've had to watch
- 7:45out for Harry since our Paul died twelve years ago. Oh is your brother
- 7:49twenty five? That's physically he's still a baby. This is all Mike about
- 7:55this proof your Harry. I'll get to it before Harry's I left to the
- 8:00spot. And he never had nothing. That's the last year. Well now
- 8:05they're paying any hop of money. That's a man like him, simple and
- 8:09all. While he was just like a right smelon waiting with some little chippy
- 8:13to come along and pick him. After that, and which is just what
- 8:16happened, then you know he's back. I know, but I wouldn't have
- 8:18known, but I hadn't been for that detective. You still work up you
- 8:22know why he kept his marriage? Sure they reason. I've tried to keep
- 8:26it once. Well, now you've got around broadcasting. And if people woke
- 8:31up some morning and found yourself hitched to a person called one Jataris, I
- 8:37don't know, no, lady, mister Mexicans go well you know but I
- 8:45oh no, just one word night some stamp. That's what all those chldes.
- 8:52That's right the way I sigear, Harry must have been a good new
- 8:54drunk when they're talking him to marry and good and don't plan to see well,
- 9:03why don't you think that being little unfair? This is wal Mic I
- 9:05don't know. I got all the information I needed that mister overpops report gold
- 9:13because she's horrible. She thinks dancing. You're sure I am. She could
- 9:20get very sting those life and storys. But we heard a beneficston and that
- 9:24was like putting a gun in her hand. And you think she had something
- 9:26to do with his disappearance. It's murders. It ain't no death, very
- 9:31serious charge, missus Walmart's. Mister Verry didn't go off, had no reason
- 9:45that was mos not tell him anybody. You're sure that he finds read.
- 9:54I've changed my mind. When I finally got away from another Walman, I
- 10:00had a cross town to the Ogoforce particular it's over four and then so I
- 10:05left work on to call me then stop by choose on the police at quarter.
- 10:09Well, Kenneth Snider was in his office and he's lunch out of a
- 10:11paperback. I command command chair, thanks light, hard boiled eggs sometimes too
- 10:18sometimes and then every day let my wife thinks that you want thanks me person
- 10:26tells me you hear about that, Hailey, Gage's right, that's not much,
- 10:30but you're recommending we have on it. What do you think is happening
- 10:33to him? Bout I don't know? And around that sistery is I'm convinced
- 10:37he's been murdered, and I started thinking about it logically. Yeah, well,
- 10:41if he was murdered, where's his conference? As he chore chairs?
- 10:45That's new right, convertible, he got the license. It shouldn't be too
- 10:48hard to climb, and like Hailey, shouldn't be either, face as well
- 10:52known as his. You think somebody's bout him, Tella, We got no
- 10:56appoints, billot Man on both sides of the bull. But first find nothing.
- 10:58Just how far the water from Hilly Tennant? Now would he's down there
- 11:03someplace? Yeah? But like his sister said, why would he leave his
- 11:05team, his friends, his sister oh love him without ing a goodbye?
- 11:09Now let's cut it. What's his wife stay in Genero? Now? What
- 11:16she's gone too? Is a dude? The same day Haley did, the
- 11:26Burtons were playing an exhibition game that afternoon. So after telling Nutman Smider where
- 11:31I was staying and asking him to call me if anything broke. I drove
- 11:33out to the ballmart. You know there's a thing in baseball if anybody knows
- 11:37that putcher is the man who catches for him and the sparkling catcher was prawnfish
- 11:41clock after the game, I sent word into him a few when this later
- 11:46was standing in the scene, fill locker room. I'm speaking one of you,
- 11:50insuance man. He knew about his policy, not Crawford Crawfee shall do.
- 11:56Yeah, every man on the team knew about it. He'd been asking
- 12:01me to get something like that, saving his money him me that towwood.
- 12:05Yes, thank you. Now, what was it you wanted for me to
- 12:11tell you anything you can about Haley's disappearance. Well, I ain't got so
- 12:16much to dam well to get seem Hall the day he disappeared. Sure he
- 12:20was my roommate because our second year. To realize, boy picked up his
- 12:28clothes dowed every day. Didn't snow him or any of his clotheness, No,
- 12:35I didn't even left his reason rushed behind him. What about his wife?
- 12:41Right, I don't tell me he didn't know he was married. Well,
- 12:48it wasn't much he didn't tell me when he had tell me something He
- 12:52didn't want to talked about it. I always told him I wouldn't know if
- 12:54my mouth nobody don't think I'm doing it now, But it snow with the
- 13:00accent on papers are playing his marriage up. Fix Well, then I reckon
- 13:03it. Say all right, what sort of a girl was or issue?
- 13:07I only saw her one time. I reckon she seemed nice enough, but
- 13:11you can never tell about a woman. Oh I remember one time down Beaumont's,
- 13:16Texas. It was just down. She looks so sweet. But what
- 13:20she done to me? Oh yeah, Well, let's get back to Haley.
- 13:22How is he doing this year? Well? This is off? Well,
- 13:26could have been in love? Well, well, that can't hurt any
- 13:30man's controul. Are you sure of being in love was the only thing bothering
- 13:33you? I don't know what else could have been. But if I think,
- 13:37if someone, I'll let you know. Okay, Crawfish. I couldn't
- 13:43make up my mind about Crawfish. I didn't know if he'd held out on
- 13:46me or if he just didn't have any information would help me find Haley.
- 13:50I go back to my hotel with the kind of parking lot, and then
- 13:54I started across the lobby when somebody called me, I got it. I
- 13:58am Oh eat a chance on your billion. Here Now there's a car from
- 14:03no Gallus police said they fight Hailey. Not it looks like his This has
- 14:07been right all alone. Howso Mexican Highway Patrol found his car bend about thirty
- 14:13miles low, No Galley. Well that doesn't mean he's ben killed. No,
- 14:18but there's nothing not that does. The dried blood on the front seat
- 14:39BacT too if you're truly Johnny Dollar in a moment. Our flag now numbers
- 14:45fifty stars, and behind each star there stands get another flag representing one of
- 14:50the fifty states. Lamont state flag, in its early form immitateted hour national
- 14:56flag, uniquely bearing seventeen stripes and so seventeen stars, with only the inscribed

- 15:07our national government, that stripes as well as stars would be added as each
- 15:11new state entered the Vermont entered the Union after Tennessee and Ohio, and with
- 15:18Kentucky to joined shortly. The Vermonters, naturally, but seventeen stripes on their
- 15:22flag. In eighteen hundred and eighteen, United States Congress put a stop to
- 15:28it, and since then the stripes have always been at thirteen, and only
- 15:33stars are added for each new state. Vermont's present flag captured the famous beauty
- 15:39of the Green Mountain State in its coat of arms and inscribed as the phrase
- 15:43Vermont Freedom and Unity. Vermont State Flag, the flag of the fourteenth state
- 15:50who entered the Union, was adopted on April twenty sixth, nineteen twenty three.
- 15:56Now act too, if you're truly Johnny Dollar and the Melancholy Memory Mother.
- 16:04After Lieutenant Snyder told me about the Mexican police finding Haley's car abandoned a
- 16:08little the border, I asked if he was going down there. He said
- 16:11it was out of his jurisdiction. Becides, he thought the Mexican bullie could
- 16:15do as well as he carding and I left, and I cost her the
- 16:18desk to pick up my key and messages. There was one when he oga
- 16:21thought detective agency upstairs. I call her number. Oh go to speaking.
- 16:27This is Johnny Dollar. Oh, yes, Donal, I'm sorry, mischie
- 16:30this morning it wasn't important. I just wanted to ask you a couple of
- 16:33questions about about missus Hale. What kind of question, Well, what kind
- 16:38of person is you? Do you mean you think she married Hay for his
- 16:42money? I don't think nothing. I don't get paid something good for apponing
- 16:47what I see? What have you heard about her? You've been in the
- 16:49place where she worked, haven't you sure? But luck with everybody, some

- 17:00Mike, if you can answer this one, where's she from? What's
- 17:03her hometown? He's a place called Macdalina, about fifty miles below. The
- 17:07next word, thanks were beginning to add up, but the total didn't look
- 17:15too good or white. And as much as I hear it believing it,
- 17:21it did look at the Hailey's sister, a no good momac was wife when
- 17:23she said the Mexican girl her brother had married was responsible for a disappearance.
- 17:27I called out for a drink and was getting ready to take a shower when
- 17:30somebody potted on the door. Yeah, come in, it's unlock. Oh
- 17:37crum, Yeah no, no, I can't stay long going out eat for
- 17:42the rest of the game. Well, well, I've been thinking and I

- 30:15This is welcome back. There was a lot to love about this particular story.
- 30:29I love the idea of having one of the adjusters whose main concern wasn't
- 30:36about the company's money but about the spartan's chances. I also thought there were
- 30:41some touching moments, though it did kind of be in some places border a
- 30:48bit on melodrama. Plus, the picture's a plot of using chicken blood in
- 30:53the car wouldn't work because even in nineteen fifty seven, if Johnny got us
- 31:00sample of that blood and God and analyze, which eventually would have if he
- 31:03hadn't found where the picture gone, he would have found out it was not
- 31:07human blood. But he's a picture not a forensic signist, so give him
- 31:11credit on that. And also we did get a sign that this episode was
- 31:18rebroadcast after its original air date. Original air date of this program was in
- 31:27April of nineteen fifty eight or fifty seven, but it was talking about US
- 31:33now having fifty states, something that wouldn't happen until nineteen fifty nine. And
- 31:37in fact, the number of times that the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service
- 31:42reused these sort of episodes is why we have so many episodes of the radio
- 31:48version of Gon Smoke and Suspense, and even Johnny Daller in circulation the Like
- 31:55I said previously, I hope there's more because I definitely don't like announcing these
- 32:01lost episodes. The Marley k Matter, from what I gather, was basically
- 32:07a remake of the Molly k Matter of the five part serials. So you
- 32:13had a five part serial being turned into a half hour story after you'd had
- 32:17a lot of half hour stories being turned into five part serials. Interesting concept,
- 32:24all right, Well, on on to some listener comments and feedback.
- 32:28I have an email from Rin not Rain as I said previously, Michael Shane
- 32:34with Jeff Chandler is my new favorite detective classic. Gerald Marlowe Moore's marlow is
- 32:39still in my number one slot, and I think that Mandael Kramer's Johnny Dowler
- 32:45is the best because of the use of period lounge music. Not a fan
- 32:50of earlier shows that feature heavy use of organs like FILEO fans. Well,
- 32:55thanks for your thought. And I haven't listened to a whole lot of the
- 33:00Mandel Kramer episodes just because of my my own preference to discovering the shows with
- 33:07the listeners. But those I have listened to I have enjoyed. And Mandel
- 33:13Kramer is a good actor, and he won an Emmy for his work on
- 33:19Edge of Knights, So certainly we do have something to look forward to even
- 33:23after the Bob Bailey episodes. And no, that's gonna be about three years
- 33:28or so away. Rin then goes on to ask is anyone doing a sci
- 33:35fi radio classic show like Great Detectives of Old Time Radio this summer? I
- 33:39listened to all the available episodes of X minus one and just start a two
- 33:44thousand plus. The answer, Wren, is not, as far as I
- 33:49know, though the Internet is a big place, and if our listeners are
- 33:52aware of someone who's doing a hosted podcast like we're doing, I've seen certainly
- 33:59some podcast I'll just put MP three files out there with perhaps an ad latched
- 34:06on. Doing a science fiction series would be challenging. It's not something,
- 34:10first of all, you could do daily. There just really aren't as many
- 34:15episodes out there as you might think. You have X minus one, you
- 34:20have Dimension X, there's Exploring Tomorrow, Beyond Tomorrow two thousand plus and Tales
- 34:27of Tomorrow, and then you have a few episodes that are science fiction of
- 34:31a larger series, such as Escape Suspense and Theater five. You add it
- 34:38all up and you could probably do one show a week, and it would
- 34:43take you about five years to get through the whole thing at tops, because
- 34:46most of these are pretty small series. Now we're already up to thirteen hundred
- 34:52and nearly thirteen hundred and fifty episodes here are in great detectives, though that
- 34:57does get a little bit more broad if you begin to bring in some of
- 35:01the juvenile programs like Speed, Gipson and Flash Gordon. The short answer is
- 35:08no, and it's definitely harder genre. I would think to do a program
- 35:14in but thanks so much for the question. Are in and that will actually
- 35:20do it for today. If you have a comment, send it to me
