- 0:17Hello. And.
- 0:18Welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast episode 19, closing in
- 0:23on our 20th episode. This week, we're without Dean.
- 0:28He's decided to take his first dose of annual leave as he's
- 0:32taking a camper van down to Margaret River.
- 0:35I believe so, yeah, stick with us as me and Owen plow through
- 0:41what's been another busy week. We've got Ostrava to cover from
- 0:44last week, and then there was a Battersea 5K.
- 0:49We've got the Irish National Five Mile.
- 0:51We're going to talk about the elite fields in Goldie for the
- 0:54weekend coming up. We've got some news on the
- 0:56Sydney Marathon elite fields and Owen has his first race back
- 1:02from injury, which I genuinely have no idea how he's got on.
- 1:07I don't even know what distance it was.
- 1:08I think he potentially said it was a 3K or something like that.
- 1:13But anyway, welcome to the pod, Owen, how are you?
- 1:17I'm great living it up here. It's nice.
- 1:20Another heat wave has hit Ireland and England, so we've
- 1:24got a bit of town over the weekend.
- 1:25But yeah, Dean will be missed. I feel like the level of like
- 1:30intellectual, like facts about running has gone like
- 1:33drastically downhill. So this might be this might be a
- 1:36rough one are. We going to get found out on
- 1:39this episode. Absolutely.
- 1:41We just don't need it. We can't talk much.
- 1:44Oh God. On the the first episode since
- 1:47the Jakins of you where we've managed to get a load of new
- 1:50listeners and then these new listeners are going to be tuning
- 1:52in and thinking this is what we deliver every week.
- 1:55I promise Dean will be back. Speaking of the heat wave and
- 2:01Dean, it's a good job he's not here to tell us that it wasn't a
- 2:04heat wave or it wasn't very hot because it has been actually
- 2:07hot, hasn't it? Man, it's I feel like when it's
- 2:10warm in Ireland and England it is like humid and warm.
- 2:14It's the equivalent of like 40° in Perth.
- 2:16Yeah, it's never heat with like clear blue sunny skies, is it?
- 2:22The clouds are always dead low. And the heat, just like gets.
- 2:25Boxed in, you can't breathe. It's not like.
- 2:27That in Perth, it's like the dry heat, yeah, whereas we need Dean
- 2:31to do is like stats with the humidity and all that sort of
- 2:35stuff, the dew point to say how hard it is to run over here.
- 2:38But no, we can't complain. I don't have you, have you ever
- 2:43ridden a peloton? No, I don't.
- 2:46Even, you know, like. The indoor bikes, the static
- 2:49bikes, but then they have like a big massive iPad screen.
- 2:52And you like you can. Race or ride against other
- 2:56people, like live across the world.
- 2:58Is that like on? Is it swift or swift or
- 3:01something? Like that, Yeah, I think it's
- 3:02similar to that. So I've just done one them for
- 3:05the first time and they have like a live leaderboard of
- 3:09people who are doing that session right now and everyone
- 3:13who's ever done that in the history.
- 3:15So like you just get so competitive because you can see
- 3:17the leaderboard and I'm not a very good rider.
- 3:20So it's just that's why my face is absolutely bright red.
- 3:23I was looking at I don't have sunburn from the weekend.
- 3:27No, I mean, yeah, I've just been in London and it was hot down in
- 3:30London as well. But no, this is just pure the
- 3:34capillaries heading straight to my skin to try and escape and
- 3:38get rid of some heat because I've just blew my socks off on
- 3:41the bike. How long did you do on it?
- 3:4345 minute class feel like a proper mum, you know, like
- 3:48middle-aged mum doing the peloton and the the classes.
- 3:53Yeah, we'll we'll get to that. So I guess let's start with a
- 3:57Strava from last week, because because we recorded early, we
- 4:02didn't quite get through those results.
- 4:04And now the main one where there's a couple of things.
- 4:07So Gout, Gout ran the 200 meters and I think there was kind of, I
- 4:11don't want to say any expectation, but anticipation
- 4:14about how he'd get on. As always with Gout, he brings
- 4:17like kind of all the crowd and all their eyes are on him,
- 4:20aren't they? So it was the first ever race in
- 4:22Europe and he's ran 20 point O2, which and that was with legal
- 4:27wind as well. It was completely flat.
- 4:30He's won the race. So I think that was a, it says
- 4:35area record. I'm not sure if that's under 20
- 4:38for Australia or like all time. I would have thought someone had
- 4:43went under 20 but potentially not.
- 4:45I think he did, but it was illegal.
- 4:48Yeah, he got it in Perth, didn't he?
- 4:50A couple of times. And it was illegal.
- 4:52So what time do you run in Australia?
- 4:5520.02. And for context, Usain Bolt's
- 4:59world record is 19.19. So yeah, the kid got wheels.
- 5:06Yeah, even using Usain Bolt as a measuring stick is a bit harsh,
- 5:10but still, like he's almost like in the conversation.
- 5:13As in once she's sub 20, then you're with the elite, aren't
- 5:17you? There was also so 1500 meters,
- 5:22which was won by Coech of Kenya in a 32905.
- 5:26Isaac Nader of Portugal was second in the 329.37.
- 5:31Josh Howie, the American who we've spoken about a few times,
- 5:34was third and 329.75 And then Australia's very own Cam Myers,
- 5:40the star boy who RAF on his interview called out as like
- 5:44kind of 1 to watch, which it wasn't what he was saying one to
- 5:48watch. It's kind of like an obvious
- 5:49show, isn't it? The Cam Myers just want to
- 5:51watch, but he's delivered in a big fashion here, breaking 3:30
- 5:56for I think the first time ever. But yeah, unbelievable
- 6:01performance there. So that gets him the qualifier
- 6:04now. So with these, the places for
- 6:07world champs in Tokyo are starting to get very tasty.
- 6:10And now we get like sort of deeper into the season and this
- 6:14European track season progresses.
- 6:17There's a lot of people starting to run the time and put the put
- 6:21the name in the hat for contention.
- 6:22So things are certainly spicing up.
- 6:25And on the subject of which, Jude Thomas of Australia, also
- 6:30down in 7th, not really in contention for the win, but he's
- 6:33got himself a qualifier also with a 332, so it just goes to
- 6:37show. Yeah, he's on form, isn't he?
- 6:40He's he could have a big, big summer.
- 6:43It's, it's going to be so interesting once the teams are
- 6:46selected. I hope that no one who kind of
- 6:49has had a good season and his run times ends up missing out.
- 6:53I hope they find a way to potentially give people like 800
- 6:57spots and 1500 spot or a 5K spot and kind of keep everyone happy
- 7:01with at least one selection. I don't even know how they'll do
- 7:05that because like there's so many good 1500 meter runners now
- 7:10in Australia. Like someone, big names are
- 7:12bound to miss out. Yeah, well now I don't think
- 7:15Stewie's run the time yet. Has he bought his back fit
- 7:18again? So no doubt he will.
- 7:20What is he? He's not running pretty, is he?
- 7:23No. No, actually quite surprising
- 7:27really because I don't know if it is a Nike sponsored meet, but
- 7:29I don't know in my head it has a big affiliation with Nike.
- 7:32I guess it's. Because it is.
- 7:34Eugene, yeah. And Stewie's obviously like a
- 7:37Big Mike athlete, isn't he? He was there pace in your one
- 7:40faith. Well, that's a nice segue into
- 7:43that. Do we talk about Faith Kapiagon
- 7:46in the sub four attempt? Yeah, we may I watch it.
- 7:49Did you get to watch it? I did.
- 7:50I watched it live annoyingly, like I wasn't even doing
- 7:53anything beforehand and I sat there and watched like the whole
- 7:5645 minute build up and then I think because she never done it
- 8:01afterwards I was just like, oh that was an hour I've just spent
- 8:05being invested. 4 minute race. 4 minute and six seconds.
- 8:11But yeah, did you watch it? I did, and I didn't really get
- 8:16what the the Pacers saw in Kipchoge's one when he was
- 8:19trying to break the two hours. I understood, like the V And
- 8:22it's obviously easier to do on a road because you can sort of
- 8:25block the wind. But on a track, like, you can't
- 8:27have anyone inside of Faith because then she'd just be
- 8:29running more. She'd be running a longer line,
- 8:31basically. So like, they had like a line of
- 8:35boys in front of her. And then Grant Fisher was like
- 8:38right beside her. And then there was like, I don't
- 8:40know what the people were doing at the back of her.
- 8:42Like, they were just there to make up numbers.
- 8:43I don't have a clue. But yeah, it was really weird.
- 8:45I didn't get it. Yeah, I mean, so let's give a
- 8:48bit of context. It was so Faith, Kapiagon and
- 8:52Knife and a host of Nike athletes were set up this
- 8:56exhibition events because it would it wouldn't have been an
- 8:59official world record with the exhibition manufactured
- 9:05circumstances to try and have the first ever woman on the 4
- 9:09minutes mile. So Faith's own current world
- 9:13record in a legitimate race was 47.64.
- 9:17Is it? Something like that, yeah.
- 9:19And that was from Monaco Diamond League back in 2023.
- 9:24So I mean, the task at hand was ridiculously big.
- 9:28Get rid of seven seconds over a mile.
- 9:31And I think the previous world record to when Faith ran 4/07
- 9:35was a 412. So like, when you consider what
- 9:39they're actually trying to do, it was just bizarre.
- 9:43Are you sure? That was his son as well.
- 9:46It's Stefan, his son, who had it before.
- 9:47I mean, and I guess that's why people were a little bit
- 9:51sceptical of the realism of it. But then as kind of the event
- 9:55got closer, I think people started to buy into the hype and
- 9:59the marketing that Nike were doing.
- 10:00Because they put out the the two-part documentary and kind of
- 10:04explained to everyone all the science and the research and
- 10:07everything that had gone into it and the factors that they were
- 10:10going to try and manipulate to help them do it.
- 10:13So that was the paces. And as you touched on the
- 10:17formation that they used, So the, I seen a picture and it was
- 10:22genuinely like scientific analysis on how the wind would
- 10:26flow around these paces that were in front of it, which is
- 10:30why that someone was like on the outside, because various air
- 10:34flows would have just meant that it cleared everything for Kippy
- 10:38Aegon. But you would have thought that
- 10:40in as traditional like just being directly in front was the
- 10:44most optimal, but apparently not.
- 10:47They had the speed suit which had supposedly these air nodes
- 10:51on them which made her more aerodynamic so that she almost
- 10:56had like a net positive airflow and just helped the air kind of
- 11:00as it hits her chest, just get off of it quicker.
- 11:04She had the new spikes which had been deliberately made for her
- 11:10and this attempt and they weren't ratified by World
- 11:13Athletics. Now be interesting to see if
- 11:15anything comes with this because I think the initial message was
- 11:19they just didn't get it done in time from World Athletics.
- 11:23But I'm not sure whether that was kind of just a bit of a
- 11:27marketing message. And in fact, they're actually
- 11:29illegal and they wouldn't have BeenVerified or ratified anyway.
- 11:33But we'll see if they hit the shelves then clearly they are.
- 11:38To the Coffee Club boys and they said that they were illegal.
- 11:42Oh yeah? Well, there you go then.
- 11:44Yeah, I don't know. They they they described the
- 11:47weight of the upper as three paper clips.
- 11:50Didn't they know? That's crazy.
- 11:54And then the the actual back of it.
- 11:56So obviously it had like the the plate and stuff on the front.
- 11:59And did you see the back? It's got like a a decent like
- 12:02maybe 20 mills worth of drop of like the zoomax phone.
- 12:06Yeah, it looked like sort of super shooting early, like the
- 12:09sort of, you know, the Streak Fly from Nike, like that sort of
- 12:13heel on it. So I mean, she she had
- 12:15everything provided for and no doubt like the training that she
- 12:19done was insane because her coach I think is Patrick Sang,
- 12:22isn't it, which is Kipchergi's coach and the famous African
- 12:25coach. The pace squad was made-up of
- 12:28like the most famous Nike athlete.
- 12:30So there's Grant Fisher, there's Cupertia, there's Craig Angles,
- 12:34Elliot Giles, Stewie Mcswain. I'm probably missing a couple.
- 12:39You're a man, Kahal Doyle. Oh, he was there, was he?
- 12:43Yeah. They they go next interviews we
- 12:47can get try and get him on from an Irish perspective and also
- 12:51ask him about Breaking 4. And the two women was Georgia
- 12:57Hunter Bell, the Brit and Gemma Ricky the Brit.
- 13:01And yeah, as you say, like, I mean, they were on pace, I
- 13:05think, weren't they? For the first two, potentially
- 13:07after three laps they'd slip by like a second, but they were
- 13:10still there. So 60 seconds or 60 point for
- 13:15one minute 20 or like one minute 20.8 maybe.
- 13:20And then they were just slowly, slowly slipping.
- 13:22And I think so Grant started on her on her outer shoulder,
- 13:26didn't he? Grant Fisher.
- 13:27And she's apparently she said that she preferred his, like,
- 13:31gait and his cadence most, which is no surprise because he's
- 13:35smooth as anything, isn't he? Yeah.
- 13:38He's so good. And then I don't know the
- 13:41unfortunately, we didn't hear too much of the pacing plan
- 13:44because you seen at one point Grant, I don't want to say
- 13:48dropped Faith, but like he kind of progressed from being like on
- 13:52her shoulder to like being in front of her.
- 13:54And then you saw Cooper come up, didn't you?
- 13:56I don't know if the plan was deliberately for people to kind
- 14:00of pass her so she almost feels like she's in a race.
- 14:04Yeah. But then should have been it.
- 14:06Yeah. It was just, it was a bit of a
- 14:08shame to see like that last lap that it was just kind of fading
- 14:12away and fading away, wasn't it? Because you you could see the
- 14:14chip, the paces behind her, like almost pushing her and she's
- 14:18giving her everything. But obviously it wasn't meant to
- 14:20be. She ran 406.
- 14:22I mean, what are your actual reflections on the whole events,
- 14:26her performance and everything like that?
- 14:29Like the event was pretty cool, but like what she was trying to
- 14:32do was like absolutely outrageous.
- 14:35Like arguably if she if she actually got under 4 minutes,
- 14:39that would be the best record ever in athletics.
- 14:44Like better than breaking two hours of the marathon.
- 14:47Like breaking a woman Breaking 4 minutes from mile is bigger.
- 14:51I think they worked it out. That's the equivalent of a 333
- 14:55male mile. So it's it's actually bananas.
- 15:00But Nike, they do it so well, like they bump it up like
- 15:03everyone, a lot of people knew about it, but like, I don't
- 15:08think it was ever really on. Like to give her all the chances
- 15:13in the world, but like, I don't think it was ever really, really
- 15:15on. Well, she ran what was it at 229
- 15:18K in, I don't know where it was, but that's essentially on pace
- 15:22for the four minute mile, but just 66% of the distance.
- 15:27So you can train as hard as you want, you can optimize nutrition
- 15:30and stuff as hard as you want, but to get an extra 600 metres
- 15:35over that pace, like it's just asking so, so much, isn't it?
- 15:39Which is why. To the average person, like if
- 15:43they say oh she's only 6 seconds off like they're they think like
- 15:47it's actually not much but 6 seconds over a mile is like
- 15:51massive. So like, she wasn't really close
- 15:54either. And this is the Olympic champ
- 15:57over 1500 meters back-to-back to back.
- 16:00So you're talking about like one of the greatest ever, not just
- 16:03the best there is now. Well, and she's the world record
- 16:07holder. So like this is the peak that
- 16:10like human evolution is produced and we're still 6 seconds off.
- 16:14So This is why my take is like as amazing as she is and amazing
- 16:19as she was in running faster because I actually think
- 16:23watching like the last 100 meters and stuff or even the
- 16:26last lap, the fact that she knows deep down, like at the end
- 16:30of the date, it's a time trial, isn't it?
- 16:32Like she potentially do better in a race, which is why I think
- 16:37that four O 7 in the Diamond League race is actually more
- 16:42impressive because she didn't have all the kind of everything
- 16:46given to her and everything tailored for her in that.
- 16:50And she also ran it. I think like at least the last
- 16:53lap there she was solo. Could you like the pressure she
- 16:57would have been under as well? Like the amount of marketing put
- 17:00into this? Like it was literally all for
- 17:04her to do this one thing. Like I couldn't imagine the
- 17:06pressure that she would have been under as well, like.
- 17:10Imagine I think maybe head coach the interview that beforehand
- 17:14and he said like, yeah, she did look a bit nervous this morning
- 17:18or something. So I hear you are right to
- 17:20highlight that. And like it just any bit of
- 17:23nerves at all, your body just tenses up that little bit more.
- 17:27It just wastes that little bit more energy.
- 17:30And yeah, like to run a floor like, Oh yeah, I don't know.
- 17:33Fair play to her. Should give it a go.
- 17:34With the track races like that as well, the short distance, so
- 17:38much of it is done off adrenaline as well, isn't it?
- 17:40So like, if you kind of peaked, if you've tapped into that
- 17:43adrenaline beforehand because you're getting nervous or like
- 17:46you're hyping yourself up or whatever, then it's just going
- 17:49to have a negative effect, isn't it?
- 17:50Yeah, but look, she's faster than both of us, so we can't say
- 17:54much. What a woman.
- 17:56But yeah I've seen Nike afterwards done a post saying
- 18:01the caption was when not if. But like I actually think that's
- 18:05the wrong take. I think at this stage, being 6
- 18:09seconds away and giving the best to ever do it, absolutely
- 18:13everything that we have right now, it's still more of a case
- 18:17of, if not when? So that's going to be my double
- 18:20trouble. Watch this now.
- 18:22She'll come out next week and run like 354 or something like
- 18:28that. Hopefully, hopefully in an
- 18:32actual race though and not like some nice manufactured events.
- 18:37Yeah, like that's another thing whether like everyone again
- 18:41outside of running or in running, they keep things like
- 18:43keep Jogi is the fastest ever, but he's not.
- 18:47You might keep them as like like what's what you doing it if it's
- 18:50not legit. Did you see Kept Jogi was there,
- 18:53Yeah. Of course he was.
- 18:56He was looking fresh in his, in his black shirt, yes.
- 19:01And I actually thought he spoke quite well when they interviewed
- 19:03him and stuff. Usually he's so stiff and like
- 19:06obviously his English isn't the greatest which like is
- 19:09absolutely fine. I couldn't speak aware they've
- 19:12really Spanish or French, let alone African and African
- 19:16language but I actually thought he spoke really well and like
- 19:19seemed quite composed and got his points across very well.
- 19:24Yeah, but I see he was pressing that for a while, wasn't he?
- 19:26Yeah, probably very scripted. Like another thing was the I
- 19:33want, I don't know what her actual title would be that kind
- 19:36of like the host, if you like that.
- 19:38I just thought she was a bit of a hype woman.
- 19:40Like she just kept referring to the crowd and the energy.
- 19:42But the only people that were there I think was people who
- 19:45were invited and it was like maybe 5 to 10% of the stadium's
- 19:51capacity. So as much as like she was
- 19:53referring to the crowd and like the atmosphere and whatever, you
- 19:56know, that that wouldn't have really had much of a positive
- 19:59effect because. The like Kippy, Aegon and the
- 20:02other athletes, they used to run in and sold out stadiums.
- 20:05So I think if they want to actually do it, then maybe
- 20:08there's another second in having a packed stadium and like the
- 20:12actual unreal atmosphere. And put the crowd in on top of
- 20:16her and then like 4 or something.
- 20:18Yeah, because that does drive you on. 100% like she would have
- 20:22found it no doubt. So much easier coming up that
- 20:24back straight where the people were than when she went out onto
- 20:28the the other side where there was no one.
- 20:31Yeah, absolutely, Absolutely. But hey, who are we to say?
- 20:34And another point is I know that having the male pacemakers is
- 20:41ideal because they can go the whole way and like kind of be
- 20:45somewhat comfortable in doing so.
- 20:48But it almost like diminished it a little bit for me from like,
- 20:52as you're watching it, you can see how easy they're moving at
- 20:56that pace. And like even on the last lap,
- 20:58like they're almost jogging up that home straight while you can
- 21:01see Kippy Aegon's absolutely emptying and giving it
- 21:04everything. So like, I don't know.
- 21:07It was crazy to see they were lately.
- 21:10They looked like they were jogging them.
- 21:12Yeah. It was the.
- 21:15Whole achievement of it a little obviously, obviously like men
- 21:21and women aren't compared and from a performance point of
- 21:24view, but just seeing them side by side there, you never you
- 21:28never see it like that. You always watch men's races
- 21:31only, women's races only. So I don't know, potentially
- 21:34could they have had different groups of women like jumping in
- 21:37for 800 and 800? I don't know.
- 21:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. You wouldn't know, but she gave
- 21:45it a go. You can't blame her for a play
- 21:47tour. No, well hopefully they maybe
- 21:49come back with another one. Maybe there was AI mean we might
- 21:52find out after the fact, but maybe there was a time where
- 21:55like if she hit a certain time say like 404 then they would
- 22:00automatically do another one or something.
- 22:02I mean, we'll have to just wait and see.
- 22:04Yeah, it won't be this year anyway.
- 22:05Next year. So hopefully we've covered that
- 22:08off OK and haven't offended anyone.
- 22:11Genuinely not trying to like Diss keep you going or anything,
- 22:16but they were just purely observations.
- 22:19You never know, next year we could get sent over to watch it.
- 22:24We'd be lucky we have to get a few more Jake Barrack off type
- 22:27interviews scheduled in to grow the audience size, but yeah.
- 22:31You never know. Do you want to talk about the
- 22:34Battersea 5K? Yeah, sure.
- 22:37So this top flight, this sort of group in England put these type
- 22:41of races on and they're basically like for they're
- 22:46supposedly first, like sub elite, like club runners and the
- 22:51quality is like unbelievable. But for some reason boys, just
- 22:55boys and girls pick this one to like hit hard and there was
- 22:57Olympians and the times are outrageous.
- 23:00So the lads race was won in 14 O 7 by Phil Sessaman.
- 23:06Second was Ben Connor in 14-10 and third was Jonathan Escalante
- 23:13Phillips in 1414. The women's was won by Alexandra
- 23:17Bell in 1541. Gabriela Rucker was second in
- 23:231557 and Olga Fitzowa was third in 1619.
- 23:32So for those who don't know, Phil Sesame and Ben Connor are
- 23:35both Olympians and Alexandra Bell, she's an Olympian as well,
- 23:39isn't she? Right, So fair enough, I think.
- 23:43Phil Sesson, Phil Sessions, a marathoner, and Ben Connor.
- 23:46He'd be more for the longer distances as well, wouldn't he?
- 23:49Yeah, I think he's he's done. Maybe he's done 10K and marathon
- 23:55at Olympic level. Yeah, but yeah, but like the
- 23:58Creme de la Creme of sort of British running for them to rock
- 24:03up with these events. It's like it just goes to show
- 24:05like how good these events are and how lucky like the UK is to
- 24:08have like such good quality racing.
- 24:13Yeah, I think. Either A500 or £1000 cash prize,
- 24:17so that may be the reason why. Yeah, for 1514 minutes worth of
- 24:21running. Did you see I seen on Sussman's
- 24:24Instagram, there was a rail of like the finish and he I don't
- 24:29think it was published by him. I think he just done like the
- 24:31the collaborated on the post and it was like side by side during
- 24:36the last 500 meters or so. And it was like Sith.
- 24:40And he's like just sitting in behind Ben Connor and then kick.
- 24:44And he literally like, you should see the Turner pace and
- 24:47he just gaps him like straight away puts 1020 meters into him
- 24:51and then yeah, just brings it home for the win.
- 24:54Yeah, for for people as well, that is.
- 24:57Was that 251 or 253 per kilometer pace?
- 25:02Yeah. It's fast.
- 25:04Outrageous, but I mean, he must be.
- 25:06Wonder why he do? He must have a marathon now.
- 25:08He'd probably hit into a marathon block, would he?
- 25:10Yeah, well, you'd think he'd be in the Tokyo team, so maybe he's
- 25:14just doing a bit of. Speed.
- 25:15Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:16Well, how? That's September.
- 25:18So. July, August, September, yeah.
- 25:21So I'd say he'd be touching starting that block pretty soon.
- 25:25But I mean even though he the like marathoners, I reckon
- 25:28Sessman's definite must have run sub 14 before I think.
- 25:32Oh, absolutely. Yeah.
- 25:33So they they wouldn't have been flat out.
- 25:35That might have been a little bit tactical there.
- 25:37And the same for Alex Bell. I mean she's predominantly an
- 25:42800 runner, I think maybe like 1500 tops.
- 25:45So that would have just been like an aerobic hit out for her,
- 25:48but still running very quick. It's better than a session like.
- 25:52Yeah, and then we had the Irish National Five Mile.
- 25:57So I actually took part in this one.
- 26:02This is my right. I'll touch on this one later on,
- 26:04but it was won by Emmett Jennings from Dundrum S Dublin
- 26:11in the time of 2419. Second was Kane Collins in 2425
- 26:17from Dunoir Harriers and 3rd was Jamie Byrne in 2442 from Dundrum
- 26:23S Dublin. In the Women's the winner was
- 26:25Tricia Jackman in the time of 2716 from Watford AC, second was
- 26:31Hannah Steeds for in a time of 2732 from Leavell AC and 3rd was
- 26:37Megan Ryan in a time of 2758 from Rome Dundrum S Dublin.
- 26:43So this race took, it happened Sunday, so the 29th of June, it
- 26:52was in the Phoenix Park. So for anyone who's know, the
- 26:54Phoenix Park is like it's Ireland's equivalent of let's
- 26:58say the tan or what's the other place or Albert Park or
- 27:03something like that. Like it's just a basically a big
- 27:05massive park where you can run around.
- 27:09Is it flat? It's hilly, yeah.
- 27:12So this for the five mile, I think the first mile was
- 27:16downhill and then it crept up for 2 miles and then a flattened
- 27:20out so. Park Hilly.
- 27:23Pardon King's Park Hilly. Parts of it could be Pink,
- 27:26King's Park, hilly. Like yeah, it's massive.
- 27:29It is massive. Loads of people just do their
- 27:31long runs around it and the Dublin Marathon goes through it
- 27:34as well. How come we can't see your name
- 27:36on the podium there? Because I was not running 3
- 27:41minute kilometer face. I was, I actually it was really
- 27:47bad. So there was Aladdin 3rd and
- 27:51just before the Lion he, oh, you could see his legs went to
- 27:54Jelly. And around 10 years before the
- 27:56lion, he just hit the deck and he hosted his head off the
- 28:00ground. Yeah.
- 28:01And so he was in 3rd. And then like stewards ran up,
- 28:05ran over, picked him up and like dragged him over the line.
- 28:08So technically I finished 8th, but technically he should have
- 28:12been disqualified. So I was 7th but no I ran the.
- 28:18Context for the listeners as well.
- 28:19I've just googled or just tried to work out what the pace per
- 28:23kilometer is there and as you said, the guy who's one in 2419
- 28:27is 3/01 per kilometer and five miles is 8.1 K Is it?
- 28:33Something like that, yeah. So no, I ran, I came eight and I
- 28:38ran 2510. So that was like 307 per
- 28:41kilometer so. Yeah, I was paying off.
- 28:45Fuck off paying off it. I was pretty happy off.
- 28:47I'd say 3 weeks worth of this like actually decent training.
- 28:51I haven't touched any speed so like regarding where I could
- 28:54have been like this is probably the best case scenario do.
- 28:56You want to do you want to give us your training week and then
- 28:59lead into your race recap whilst we hear that.
- 29:01Yeah, I may as well. So this worked out well.
- 29:05So this was my down week as well.
- 29:06So Monday morning I just got up and done 60 minutes chilling
- 29:1213.2 kilometers. Tuesday it was my sort of last
- 29:17sort of session of the week. So I 3K warm up, 3K cool down
- 29:23and the session was 3 by 10 minutes off a 5 minute flow and
- 29:28then at the end I done 8 by like 50m turnabouts.
- 29:34So it's basically like a fast ride, but you don't really get
- 29:37that much recovery. So you let me turn and sort of
- 29:39go again 50 meters, but because only 50 meters, like it's just
- 29:42like short like darts just to get the legs turned over after
- 29:49the like 30 minutes worth of threshold before that.
- 29:51When the 10 minutes to heart rate or to lactate still there?
- 29:56So I've gotten to the stage now where like with my heart rate, I
- 30:00sort of know what my lactate will be.
- 30:02So if I hit them between like 3:35 and 3:30, like I know my
- 30:08Lac date will be below like 2.0, which is where I want to be for
- 30:12that, for that first Lt. session.
- 30:17So yeah, like I didn't do test Lac date as well.
- 30:21So yeah, look, I felt good. I felt in control the whole
- 30:24time. Wednesday I got out for 60
- 30:26minutes in the morning and then I done 60 minute, 30 minutes in
- 30:31the evening. Literally like a 5 minute
- 30:33kilometer pace, just like shake out the legs.
- 30:35And then I got a massage that night as well.
- 30:38I try and get a massage like of the week of a race, like
- 30:41normally around like Wednesday or Thursday just so that like my
- 30:45legs are loose and it's not too close to the race that I'll be
- 30:49sore from the massage or anything like that.
- 30:50How does the? Cost of a massage comparing
- 30:53Ireland to Australia. Pardon.
- 30:55How's the How does the cost compare?
- 30:58The cost. So I go, I've been going to this
- 31:01guy for, I'm going to say like even when I was playing Gaelic I
- 31:05went to this guy. So he sort of helps me out a
- 31:07little bit. So I think it's like £4040 or
- 31:10something like that. But like, I swear by him, like I
- 31:13trust him with everything. So yeah, he was a runner as well
- 31:17back in the day, pretty legit as well.
- 31:19So yeah, if he cost like £80, I'd still go to him.
- 31:24So yeah, that's Thursday, Friday, total rest day, feed up
- 31:28done nothing. Saturday I did so 15 minute from
- 31:34my house. It's like a 15 minute jog.
- 31:36Well, it's like 710 minutes jog down to like this sort of gravel
- 31:41track. So it's like the best thing we
- 31:44have here around where I'm from. It's not a full 400 meters, it's
- 31:47like 365 meters or something stupid like that.
- 31:52But yeah, so I jogged down to there 50 minute, a little warm
- 31:56up and then I done for about 200 meters at sort of a race pace.
- 32:00So at like sort of three O 6, three O 7 per kilometer and
- 32:04yeah, felt crazy again just to get the lights turning over
- 32:07before the race on the Sunday and then I just.
- 32:10Dropped if you you know, usually on like 400 meter track, you
- 32:14know that a 72 second lap is like 3 minute K pace and
- 32:17whatever. So do you know that like a 69
- 32:22second lap or 68 second lap is 3 minute K pace?
- 32:26I would have, I would have before, but now coming back, I
- 32:29sort of forget what it was like. Like our 400 meter star is like
- 32:33halfway down the 100m straight. So if you start there and do a
- 32:38lap and you pass where you start and then if you end normally
- 32:43where the finish line is like that is a full like lap of this
- 32:47track. So it's sort of annoying in a
- 32:49way, but it's the best you have out here.
- 32:52It's like that. Did you ever train on the donor
- 32:56in Melbourne? Like the Collingwood training
- 32:58ground? What they all use there The
- 32:59circular No I. Didn't.
- 33:02Get to go to it. That's that's literally like in
- 33:04terms of like in the radius of the city, that's the most
- 33:08popular track people use, but it's 507 meters and it's like 3
- 33:12lanes in a complete circle. So there's no straights, no
- 33:16bends, just circle 507 meters and on a Tuesday you should see
- 33:21how busy it is. It's crazy.
- 33:23So is it what's in the middle? Is there a pitch in the middle?
- 33:26Yeah, and footy. And for the listeners, I'm doing
- 33:29inverted commas there. Footy An AFL pitch.
- 33:33OK, that was what I loved. About Australia?
- 33:36The AFL? No, just the ovals.
- 33:39Oh yeah. Yeah, like Internet, like over
- 33:40here all we have is like rectangle pitches that are shit.
- 33:45Yeah, I mean changing subjects slightly.
- 33:48I remember when I would have played football, like actual
- 33:52fussy, but soccer and some of the sessions you would do would
- 33:56be like Sprint one side of the pitch, jog 3, Sprint two sides
- 34:00of the pitch, jog 2, Sprint 3, jog one.
- 34:02But there you're working with like long straights and then
- 34:05short straights on a soccer pitch and.
- 34:08Yeah, yeah, yeah. Of course.
- 34:10Yeah. We have to make do what we have
- 34:12over here. Anyway, sorry I interrupted you.
- 34:15You've. Been No, you're all right.
- 34:17So then, yeah, jog back home 15 minutes.
- 34:20And then actually that evening, I got the curly finger from my
- 34:23father and I had to go fencing. So friend who doesn't know I'm a
- 34:28farmer, grew up on a farm, cattle farm, and the weather's
- 34:31good now. So we let the cattle out in the
- 34:33fields, but we have to put a fence up at the very back of our
- 34:37fields. So we had these, like, wooden
- 34:39posts and we got this, like, metal.
- 34:42It's sort of like, all right. Think of it as a pen lid.
- 34:46You know them little big pen lids both got handles each side.
- 34:50So then when you hit the pole sort of fits into the pen lid
- 34:54and you hit it down into the ground.
- 34:56But like it's really heavy. So me and my brother were doing
- 34:59that, but how to do that Saturday?
- 35:01Evening. And so it's like to like Pierce
- 35:03a circular hole in the ground. Basically, so you've got the
- 35:07pole and then you're hitting that on top of it.
- 35:10Oh yeah, so. It's like a hammer into a nail,
- 35:12basically. And so they're like the stakes
- 35:15in the ground. And then you put like electric
- 35:17wire through it to keep the cattle in.
- 35:20So yeah, that took off my my Saturday evening and my hands
- 35:24are covered in blisters if you can see.
- 35:27Yeah, I can see it. He's broken up anyway.
- 35:31Yeah, not the ideal Saturday night with a with a race the
- 35:35next morning, but has to be done to keep the cattle in our
- 35:40fields. When you say I've got the curly
- 35:42finger, does that mean like, come here?
- 35:44Like I got, Yeah, he told me you have to come down and help him.
- 35:47Yeah, me and my little brother who's a big fan of the podcast.
- 35:53Nile. Yeah.
- 35:55Nile. Anyway, yeah, then Sunday
- 36:00morning the race was at 9:00, which is a good thing about
- 36:03Ireland. It's not like in Australia, like
- 36:06again, for the guys doing Gold Coast next weekend, they have to
- 36:09get up like 6:00 the race. So for the guys doing the
- 36:11marathon they have to like kid up like 3 would it be?
- 36:15Yeah. To get some food in.
- 36:17But yeah, so 9:00 I rolled out a bed at like 6, got some food
- 36:20into me, headed up to the Phoenix Park and done my usual
- 36:25warm up. But this time my coach over here
- 36:28said give. So I do my strides and all, but
- 36:31then I do 2 by 3 minutes a threshold.
- 36:34So again, just to like relax, get my body sort of flowing.
- 36:38And I was looking at the watch and I was running like I was
- 36:42running like 310 pace and I felt really crazy.
- 36:45So I sort of, I sort of knew I was sort of on like I felt good,
- 36:49the sort of taper, whatever method of tapering my coach in
- 36:52Ireland does. Like it felt really, really good
- 36:54basically. So yeah, then and I knew like I
- 36:59was always going to run a bit conservative because I had I
- 37:02really didn't have a clue what shape I was in.
- 37:04Like I hadn't I didn't touch on speed.
- 37:06Like that was the first time I ran like a three or 7 kilometer.
- 37:09Did you know any? Of the guys on the start list.
- 37:12No. And being brutally honest, like
- 37:14it was a weak field, like there was no big hitters in this race,
- 37:19like it was a national Five mile, it's a national title.
- 37:21But no, like if the big lads were here, I probably would have
- 37:25came, I'm going to say 50th or something like that.
- 37:27I would have been way, way, way down.
- 37:29And so yeah, it wasn't the best standard, but it's still pretty
- 37:32fast, running like 3 minute kilometers.
- 37:33Like it's nothing to be looked down on.
- 37:37But yeah, so there was like race, my gun went off and I was
- 37:42so, so tempted to go with that first group because you know
- 37:44where you feel so good at a server race, But I was like, no,
- 37:47I better not. I'll just I want to enjoy it.
- 37:50So I just sort of sat back into the second group and the start
- 37:53was downhill. So I sort of just like took it
- 37:56easy. I think the first splits, first
- 37:582 kilometers splits were like three O 3 and like 3O2 again, I
- 38:01didn't look at my watch at all because if I'd seen that, I knew
- 38:04it would have got into my own head.
- 38:06And then we started climbing and then I think I hit like a 311
- 38:10and like a 317 kilometer split. And so they were like like it
- 38:14was hilly and it is there's like this road that goes through the
- 38:17park and like just opens up. So it gets pretty windy.
- 38:21So I just started trying to tuck in, buying someone and then it
- 38:24sort of flattened out and I sort of got going again.
- 38:27I think I hit like a three O 7, three O 6.
- 38:29And like my last kilometers were I think a 3 minute and a 258 or
- 38:33something. So yeah, I finished up in a, I
- 38:36think it was 2510. My coach said if I he was near
- 38:3925 minutes, he'd be absolutely delighted.
- 38:41So look, I'm trending in the right direction.
- 38:45I'll sort of my next like a goal race is like the national 5K on
- 38:50the track, which is at the end, which at the start of August,
- 38:54which is like might the one I'll be training for now.
- 38:56I've got a 3K on the track in two weeks time.
- 38:59So but I won't taper down for that one.
- 39:01I'll like keep. I don't think you really need to
- 39:03taper for a 3K really. Like it's on a Wednesday night.
- 39:07So that Monday and the Tuesday, I'll probably take it easy, but
- 39:10my long run will still be like 90 to 100 minutes.
- 39:15So yeah, if I just need to keep it up, keep on top of like
- 39:19massage, nutrition, sleep and all that sort of stuff, and I
- 39:22should be, it should come good for the start of August.
- 39:26It'll be interesting to see how much fitness I can build up in
- 39:28the next 4 weeks. That's good.
- 39:29I mean, I'd say that that's a very good result for you.
- 39:32And it just lends itself to the fact that, like, you can get so
- 39:36much fitness and speed from just doing threshold training, isn't
- 39:39it? It's crazy.
- 39:40I wasn't expecting it at all. Like I genuinely haven't done
- 39:44any kilometer splits, 800 meter splits.
- 39:46Like they've just been like time based and then just a few
- 39:49strides at the end of my easy runs.
- 39:52So like let's say today on the evening I am done 30 minutes,
- 39:57I'm going to say like 455 per kilometer pace.
- 40:00And at the end I done 8 by let's say 12 second strides and they
- 40:06just get your legs turning over and it just like gets the.
- 40:10The fibers like twitching. So yeah, look, I'll keep it up
- 40:14for a little while. See I'm going obviously I'm
- 40:16going to start sharpening up now a little bit or introducing more
- 40:20speed into it. So the mileage will come down a
- 40:22little bit because the intensity is going to increase.
- 40:25So I just have to watch that and make sure one doesn't tip over
- 40:29the scales. But yeah, look, I'm happy where
- 40:33things are going. Legs are feeling good so just
- 40:36need to keep on top of that. Yeah, Well, it sounds like
- 40:39between you and your coach, you're being very sensible, and
- 40:42I don't want to say cautious, but you've got so much room to
- 40:45kind of grow and expand the training from here, haven't you?
- 40:49So even if you just done the same training for another month,
- 40:52you're only going to get fitter and you've still then got room
- 40:55to like add more intensity or more speed or more hills or
- 41:00whatever. Like literally everything you've
- 41:01done so far has just been like threshold, hasn't it?
- 41:04And very controlled, very measured.
- 41:07But I think that's the thing, like I'm sort of getting used to
- 41:10running at like a pretty decent speed, but like you're sort of
- 41:14always in your head, like relax. So I'm sort of getting used to
- 41:17like relaxing. My muscles aren't tensed.
- 41:20I'm just sort of cruising. And then when you're in the
- 41:22race, you're just like, alright, relax.
- 41:23And that's just like, I don't know, I think it's like saving
- 41:25the energy or I haven't a clue. Like again, I'm still learning a
- 41:29bit. Like I wouldn't coach anyone
- 41:31because I'm still learning myself so I'm literally just
- 41:35taking his word as gospel and if he tells me to literally run
- 41:39100K tomorrow, I just run 100K tomorrow.
- 41:41I'm just doing what he says. No, it's cool.
- 41:44Trust him. And that's what you need, isn't
- 41:46it? In the coach, Yeah.
- 41:47And like, I don't need, like my my eyes are firmly fixed on
- 41:51November for the cross country in Ireland.
- 41:53That's my one goal like I just want to be building up to that.
- 41:58So like I've got the elite entry for Cardiff half.
- 42:00I might even do it because the cross country now in Ireland is
- 42:03gone down. It usually is 10K but it's gone
- 42:06down to like 7.5 which suits the fast.
- 42:09So the 10K would have suited me better that the 7.5 will suit
- 42:13the fast guys. So I don't know if a half
- 42:16marathon would it even like obviously it make you strong,
- 42:20but you sort of have to be like be able to turn over the pace
- 42:23for that 7 1/2 K. And so yeah, look, I'll see what
- 42:26happens. November is a long way away, but
- 42:28just. Give it up.
- 42:29Well, it's good that you've got your next race sorted as well in
- 42:31a month's time because that's it's enough time to go away and
- 42:34do some more training. But also four weeks is nothing
- 42:37really is it? So you can be excited about
- 42:39racing again soon. Absolutely.
- 42:41Like they're all week. I was so excited for the Sunday
- 42:45and like you sort of like wish your weekend away and now like
- 42:49the weekend goes so fast and you're just like, oh, come back
- 42:54to work now and one. Day.
- 42:56Oh well. Banket move on.
- 42:58Well, I guess some of the listeners might be shouting what
- 43:01shoes did you wear? Yeah.
- 43:03So when I came home, I have a pair of ASIC Meta Speed Sky old
- 43:10ones that I've worn for training now and they probably wouldn't
- 43:14be the best for racing and they're a bit worn.
- 43:15Then I have New Balance super complete V4, which I'm not the
- 43:22like they're grand. It's just for 5K you want
- 43:25something more responsive. I feel like for the marathon
- 43:27they'd be ideal because they just protect your legs.
- 43:30But for a 5K you want something that's going to like give you
- 43:33something back or for a five mile.
- 43:34I mean that because it's actually not that long.
- 43:37Like it's 25 minutes of running. You want to be you want to feel
- 43:40the ground basically. Well, that's what I'd want in a
- 43:425K five mile, 10K shoe. So I asked when I was in
- 43:47Australia, I, when I was doing my recent work outside
- 43:50Melbourne, I got pally with this guy called Ben Ludbrook.
- 43:53He's based out in Ballarat and he works in the running company
- 43:58Ballarat. And I asked him if he was to run
- 44:00a 5K, what would you run in? And he says the Nike Streak Fly.
- 44:05So I took his word and I went up to the local sport shop here and
- 44:10I bought the Nike St. Flight.
- 44:11And again, it's a specific like 5K10K shoe.
- 44:15It's super light, it weighs nothing, but it's just more
- 44:17minimal. It doesn't have like a big
- 44:18massive chunk of foam. And so it's the equivalent of
- 44:21like that Adidas Takumi Sen 10 or something like that.
- 44:24They're the same sort of category.
- 44:26So I wore that and I really, really liked it.
- 44:29It was really responsive. The you run the risk of beating
- 44:32up your calves because it doesn't give you much back.
- 44:35Like it's going to work your legs a little bit more.
- 44:37But I feel like for that 5K10K it's worth it because you can
- 44:40push off the ground more. So that's the shoe I wore for
- 44:44the race. And like, I actually literally
- 44:46got it on the Saturday evening. Didn't do any training in it.
- 44:49The only first bit of run I'd done was my three minute
- 44:52threshold stride at the start. And Mr. Lebrock there then?
- 44:56Yeah, yeah. No, I did trust him and he
- 44:58actually shouted to him. He ran.
- 45:00AI think in that Albert Park 5K there a couple of weeks ago he
- 45:04so before he ran his PB was like 1441 he ran 1415 in that Albert
- 45:11Park 5K which is freaking phenomenal so I've.
- 45:15Seen so many people run so quick there.
- 45:18You'd wonder was the course. It definitely wasn't.
- 45:21But yeah, no boys are, man. It's just probably perfect
- 45:26weather, perfect course, like all the things aligned and like
- 45:32he wasn't the only one to. Run fast.
- 45:34So I was looking at some of the lads who I would used to finish
- 45:38in the round when I'd done the one season of XCR in Melbourne
- 45:42or running like waist up 50 and I was just getting dead salty.
- 45:46But like in your situation, like you've seen how fast I've sort
- 45:50of gotten fit again, it's like it just takes like a month of
- 45:54like actually have decent training in your back.
- 45:56I've like pretty much done that like the last three years as
- 46:00well, even if it wasn't through injury, just through like having
- 46:03a month or so off and just like eating what you want and
- 46:06whatever and just getting unfit, like almost deliberately because
- 46:09I genuinely enjoy the process of like building back and getting
- 46:13fitter again. Because sometimes you can like
- 46:15plateau a little bit. Can't you all feel like you just
- 46:18banging your head against the wall trying to get like half a
- 46:21percent fitter? So then when you like just
- 46:24taking leaps and bounds, it's just a lot more fun.
- 46:27And I feel like every time you like increase the ceiling and
- 46:31then bring the floor up, increase the ceiling again,
- 46:33bring the floor up. Absolutely, you're 100% right.
- 46:36Like your body needs to break so you let it relax, relax and just
- 46:39come back stronger. Every single time you see boys
- 46:41get injured and they just come back, even better.
- 46:43Your body needs the break. Rest is so so so important.
- 46:47And then reset as well. Like, as much as we all love it,
- 46:51you just do need to switch off a little bit and potentially like
- 46:55not be thinking about splits all day every day or like your
- 46:58session and all that sort of stuff, isn't it?
- 47:00Because you literally revolve your life around it so much for
- 47:04so much of the year. So yeah, I know the reset.
- 47:07You just need to hit that reset button every now and then.
- 47:09And yeah, give your body a break.
- 47:12And your head. On on your shoes, how well your
- 47:15legs that well, I was going to say the next day, but today.
- 47:18Grand. Yeah.
- 47:20Grant like a tiny tiny, like it was my first race in ages.
- 47:24So they were a tiny bit beat up and I was expecting that like
- 47:27nothing crazy. So yeah.
- 47:28Or what would recommend them? Well, should I quickly give my
- 47:33face? Yeah.
- 47:34Absolutely. Training wise, not a lot
- 47:37happened. I eventually got sick of well, I
- 47:41was like OK, it's been like 5 or 6 weeks now and it's hard to
- 47:44tell what's really going on. When I had.
- 47:47I don't really have pain walking around, but I know if I go for a
- 47:51run, this isn't going to be great.
- 47:52Well, that's what I've been thinking.
- 47:53And I've reached the point where I'm like, I'm sick of this, not
- 47:56trying. Like I want to go for a run and
- 47:58find out because it feels OK walking around and stuff.
- 48:02So I went for a run half an hour.
- 48:04It was fine during the run. And then shit, woke up the next
- 48:07day. I was like, wow, yeah, that is
- 48:10what it used to feel like. And then I was full of regret.
- 48:13Like why didn't do that? So yeah, back to square one it
- 48:18feels like. But because I've been on like
- 48:20this stupid like trip of wedding here, holiday there, wedding
- 48:25wherever, and knowing that potentially even if it was not
- 48:29injured, I wouldn't be like following full training weeks,
- 48:33I've almost haven't taken it seriously in terms of recovery.
- 48:36So I need to just stop being consistent with the rehab which
- 48:41I'm flying back to Perth tomorrow.
- 48:43So I'll be out of the environment which I'm in here,
- 48:46which is like just hard to be consistent and reliable with
- 48:50training. So once I'm back in my little
- 48:52Perth bubble with only fitness to focus on, I'm going to give
- 48:57it a proper effort. Because.
- 48:59I am fucking sick of it now I really just want to get back to
- 49:02training. Yeah, but like the rest of the
- 49:04world are good, genuinely, you'll come back much better and
- 49:08you'll get back. You can see the physiograph,
- 49:10just put together a plan and just then give it 100% because
- 49:14you couldn't have given it 100%. When you're travelling like
- 49:18weddings, like what was the stags and all that sort of
- 49:22stuff. Like there's no way you could
- 49:24have given 100%. So there's no point of doing
- 49:26anything half first. Yeah.
- 49:27So that's yeah. I mean, no more excuses.
- 49:30From now? No.
- 49:31Yeah, from Wednesday you're fully accountable.
- 49:36So yeah, that's my quick recap. I don't think need to go into
- 49:39anything more than that next on the agenda, unless you have
- 49:45anything else to add whilst we're there on our weekly
- 49:47recaps. Oh shout out to my local Gaelic
- 49:51team actually. So after the five mile race my
- 49:56Gaelic team we are shit based. Well we have been shit for the
- 49:59last since I was born. Since 1998 Mead my local team
- 50:04have been absolute shit. I'd say we're the equivalent of
- 50:08of the West Coast Eagles and AFL like absolute dog shit.
- 50:12However this year we are in an all Ireland semi final now so
- 50:17with the quarterfinals the weekend and we bet Galway which
- 50:21is another county in Ireland which we were not expected to
- 50:24win but we won't bet them by a point and so it is massive like
- 50:29this. The first time me have been in
- 50:31an Ireland semi final since 2009.
- 50:34Hence my little Booker hat I. Was going to ask what that was.
- 50:37Yeah, yeah, incredible. So we're playing.
- 50:42We are playing Donegal in two weeks time.
- 50:46So yeah, I'll be up in Crow Park again watching that.
- 50:50But yeah, shout out to me boys. What's their nickname?
- 50:54Do they have one? Yeah, the Royals.
- 50:56Of the Royals. Yeah, yeah, it's crazy.
- 51:00Flares and oh man, unbelievable. That atmosphere is so good.
- 51:05On like Co power calls, I think it's 82,000 people and like
- 51:10there's two games on. So me it was on at 1:45 and then
- 51:13there's another game on at 4:00. So it's like 4 groups of fans
- 51:18and Oh yeah, it was just incredible atmosphere, like
- 51:22incredible. I'd actually I might share
- 51:24something to share something easy double story so you can
- 51:27like see what it was like and see what it meant to like the
- 51:30actual people from where from. It's crazy.
- 51:32It actually is crazy. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:34Bring us in. Bring us in.
- 51:35Yeah, we. Went to Gold Coast.
- 51:38Yeah, but lastly, I'm on my week quickly with a YouTube Diaries
- 51:43comment because I'm not sure if we'll get to do a full one later
- 51:47on the episode because we're this is going on already.
- 51:50But during my week I went over to the city centre of Liverpool
- 51:54for the first time. Well, first time since I've been
- 51:57home and it was such a nice reminder of like how class of a
- 52:01city Liverpool is. Like it's a Friday night as well
- 52:04in the atmosphere. It's just like insane.
- 52:06Like there's live singer. Not like in one bar, in every
- 52:10single bar you walk past there's a live singer and it's just like
- 52:12booming out. It's been hot.
- 52:15So like all the doors and I would like all wide open.
- 52:18It's almost like a street party across the whole city.
- 52:22But I just went and caught up with some old old mates from an
- 52:26old job for food and they aren't runners or fans of the podcast.
- 52:31In fact, one of them used to take the piss out of me for the
- 52:35podcast. Now he's giving me a YouTube
- 52:38recommendation and begging for shelves out.
- 52:41So here we go. The YouTube diary comes from
- 52:45Ryan Lingley and Steph Lamkin and it's not an actual running
- 52:49one, but it does sound quite intriguing.
- 52:51I haven't watched it. It's called the The Outside
- 52:53Boys, I think, or the Outside Man or something like that.
- 52:56Man, no. So, boys, they're gone.
- 52:58They're finished. Yeah, yeah.
- 53:00That's it actually is crazy. These guys he just don't know
- 53:04for go on. You can explain it.
- 53:05You can explain it. Well, it sounds like you might
- 53:08have seen it, so you can add to the story I give.
- 53:11So they're from Alaska, apparently.
- 53:14And the content is just like him going and building the glue, or
- 53:18like catching a fish from off an iceberg and cooking it, and like
- 53:23just all raw authentic Alaska stuff.
- 53:25So he's a family. So it was just a family, so a
- 53:28father and he's like two sons or something.
- 53:30And he just loved the outdoors. So he was like, all right, I'll
- 53:33just document it. And it was such an he like found
- 53:36a niche in the market. So like Jake in Japan, like it's
- 53:40sort of cool seeing what it's like out there.
- 53:42This guy found a niche in the market and.
- 53:46Alaska. It got it got out of control.
- 53:49So he's got some outdoor, he's got a crazy amount of
- 53:55subscribers, subscribers now. So yeah, essentially packed it
- 54:00in because he's got like 2 famous like and therefore 2 rich
- 54:04off it and he's just going to enjoy life basically.
- 54:08Like 16.1 million subscribers. So yeah, just got out of
- 54:11control. So he couldn't go outside
- 54:12anymore. Like fame.
- 54:14Like he's just yeah, he couldn't handle the fame.
- 54:17Basically that what the channel is after bringing.
- 54:19So like he got to a stage where like for YouTube video he's
- 54:23making like $1,000,000. Yeah.
- 54:25I mean, never mind the fame, he's just cashing in on on his
- 54:29all his wealth there and going to live his life.
- 54:30And he like, yeah. But yeah, no, it's actually
- 54:34really, I haven't watched any videos of them, but I heard
- 54:36about him and I heard he's after like calling a day because it
- 54:39just got too much. But yeah, it'd be worth a watch.
- 54:44It's it's Bear Grylls a level up I think.
- 54:47Or a more relatable version of Bear.
- 54:48It's more realistic. Yeah, so there we go.
- 54:50There's there's YouTube Diaries like different.
- 54:54Yeah, Rogue One. So yeah, Gold Coast then they
- 54:57got obviously Gold Coast Marathon Half Marathon. 10K5K is
- 55:00coming up this weekend, the 5th of July is it or the 6th, 6th
- 55:05Sunday, 6th of July. And they've announced their
- 55:08elite fields for the marathon, I think for the half as well,
- 55:13actually, yeah, we'll start with the marathon because that's the
- 55:17whole event is Gold Coast Marathon.
- 55:19So on the men's side, the things they've got 21 athletes in the
- 55:23elite field now there are 11 of them with APB of sub 210, which
- 55:29is makes it an incredibly deep field.
- 55:33So the fastest guy is an Ethiopian guy called Ghazaliwa
- 55:37Ayana, who's around two O 715. There's then four more, three
- 55:43more athletes with two O 7 PBS. So that's a Kenyan Japanese guy,
- 55:49Yuki Kawaochi, who's kind of, well, very famous because he won
- 55:53Boston one year a little while ago now when it was very rainy
- 55:59and he wasn't kind of, I don't think he would have been
- 56:02expected to win or compete. He's on his retirement tour.
- 56:06Yeah, he's not. He's not going to be running 27
- 56:08on Sunday. I think it's safe to say he's
- 56:10not. Going to be running 270 and I
- 56:12don't think. There's there's two Mongolian
- 56:15athletes in the field, which is quite I was.
- 56:18Wondering what the flag was? Yeah, well, I mean, I'm just
- 56:21assuming the abbreviation MGL equals.
- 56:24Oh yeah, yeah. But I mean, they're both sub 209
- 56:27athletes as well and I would never have thought that like
- 56:30Mongolia produced top athletes like that.
- 56:33So fair play to those two would be interesting and see how they
- 56:36get on. You've then got a Canadian in
- 56:39Thomas Broach 210, an American Josh Izewski 210 and then the
- 56:45only Australian in the men's elite field is Rhys Edwards.
- 56:50I think everyone or most people will be familiar with him.
- 56:53So he won Ballarat Marathon, he's won Melbourne Marathon, he
- 56:58done Gold Coast last year. I can't remember what his time
- 57:01was. I think it was around 2:15 and
- 57:03he has a PB of 213. So be interesting to see how
- 57:07Reese gets on there. And then now's time when we give
- 57:10our token shout out to him, Mr. Rancher Jatanji, because he's
- 57:15not named in the elite field here, but it looks like he
- 57:18misses that by about 30 seconds. In terms of PB, he's around 2:14
- 57:23and he'll be there lining up on Sunday.
- 57:25So if anyone sees him, give him a shout.
- 57:29Or if anyone hasn't listened to the interview from last week,
- 57:32which based on the numbers, it was by far our most listened to
- 57:35episodes. So I imagine most people will
- 57:38have. But the feedback we've got from
- 57:40that was that people found it like incredibly insightful
- 57:43because it's just a bit of a nut case, but a great nut case.
- 57:47Come here, his freaking fans are worse.
- 57:50If you want entertainment go into his stravas and just look
- 57:54at the comments. There's a lad here and it was
- 57:57like oh thanks Jake you inspired me to run 300K weeks.
- 58:01So this chap is after going from 100 kilometer a week and I kid
- 58:06you not last week he ran 300 and like 2 kilometers.
- 58:12That's funny. He went for a run last weekend
- 58:15on his straw, but he put like got myself for company.
- 58:19Thanks for Ryan for the interview on easy double or
- 58:22something like that. And some of the comments are
- 58:25like so funny but people seem to enjoy that.
- 58:29They also seem to enjoy how much research I put into his
- 58:32background and his power return. Someone said.
- 58:35Someone said why? Why does the guest have a better
- 58:39mic than the host? Ouch.
- 58:46I don't have the the income from the YouTube platform that the
- 58:50house that the guest had. We for people who don't know, we
- 58:55are losing money doing this podcast.
- 58:59Did you see when you signed into the recording platform that we
- 59:04need to pay? I know the lights are going off
- 59:08here. Yeah, it's crying.
- 59:15We'll we'll pay the bills and we'll be back next.
- 59:18Week. We need to set winners and
- 59:22races. In the women's field, there are
- 59:2613 elite athletes. The top three are Kenyans with
- 59:30PBS of 223-220-2224. Again, there's a Mongolian
- 59:36athlete, there's quite a few nations here to prefer.
- 59:38There's Ethiopian, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and then there are
- 59:42three Australian women in this field.
- 59:45So we've got Millie Clark who has the fastest PB of the three
- 59:49Australians and two 2659. I'm pretty sure she'd done it
- 59:53last year as well because the name rings a bell.
- 59:56We've got Rochelle de Massey of WA.
- 1:00:01So Rochelle has APB of two 3445. I'm not sure if she'll be
- 1:00:06looking to better that PB this weekend or if this is just kind
- 1:00:09of like obviously just a big destination race for her, but I
- 1:00:14know that she has been training pretty hard for it so.
- 1:00:17Western Australians, keep your eyes out for Rochelle and her
- 1:00:20result there and give her a good cheer.
- 1:00:23And then the last one is Ella McCartney, who I think won
- 1:00:26Ballarat Marathon last year in two 3843 is her PB.
- 1:00:31It's. Pretty decent, yeah, but I
- 1:00:34think. But it looks like they put all
- 1:00:35their money into the half marathon.
- 1:00:37Mate, the the men's field is quality isn't it?
- 1:00:43It's scary, man. The women's field as well.
- 1:00:45So the men's field, you've got Anna Buchanan, Brett Robinson.
- 1:00:49Anna Buchanan is an hour flat, Brett Robinson, National record
- 1:00:535957. Then you've got 5 Japanese guys
- 1:00:58with an hour PB. Then you've got Isaac Kane, Lean
- 1:01:02Boudin, Sam Clifford, Joel Tobin White, Tom Dicanto.
- 1:01:06Like it is incredibly stacked. That's.
- 1:01:10Yeah, I who are you calling? Then I'd love to see Brett win
- 1:01:15it. You know, I don't know why I've
- 1:01:16got like a bit of a soft spot for him, especially like the
- 1:01:19little comeback that he's on. Yeah, and I thought when we got
- 1:01:22to talk to him in Japan, I he just, I know he came across so
- 1:01:26genuine and like, you just want to root for him.
- 1:01:28You want him to win. Yeah, he's so like down to earth
- 1:01:31and like just one of the lads almost, isn't he?
- 1:01:33Yeah. So yeah, I'm Team Brett as well.
- 1:01:36And do you know what the weather's like for the race?
- 1:01:38Is it looking good or? Haven't looked to be fair.
- 1:01:41I mean, I know that would that will be a big factor because it
- 1:01:44can still be a little bit warm there, can't it, But.
- 1:01:48I think, I think it's just humid.
- 1:01:50I think the weather's are, it's just humid.
- 1:01:52Yeah. I mean, Saturday, it says, is
- 1:01:54lows of 12, highs of 21, sunny and cloudy.
- 1:01:57Sunday, lows of 15, highs of 21. So yeah, potentially a little
- 1:02:01bit humid there, which isn't ideal.
- 1:02:05So then the women's one, you've got Leanne Pampiani, the fastest
- 1:02:09in the field with a 69 O1 PB, then Jess Stenson 3 seconds
- 1:02:14behind her. Then you've got 2 Japanese women
- 1:02:16that have run identical PBS. Actually.
- 1:02:19Tara, Pam, Caitlin Adams, Sarah Klein, Abigail Nordberg, Lauren
- 1:02:24Reed, Vanessa Wilson Wilson. You've got a Chinese woman and
- 1:02:29then two more Japanese. So yeah, PBS ranging from 69 to
- 1:02:3373. So again, another stocked field.
- 1:02:37Who would you have, Leanne or Jess?
- 1:02:39I'm going to take Leanne because I know Jess has been racing
- 1:02:44quite a lot recently on a bit of, I want to say cash grab, but
- 1:02:49she hasn't been doing like the the crazy fast races and where
- 1:02:53she would have been running PBS, but she's been going round
- 1:02:56cleaning up a lot of domestic local races.
- 1:02:59So I'm not too sure what Leanne's been doing since the
- 1:03:03Nagoya Marathon in her debut, but I'm sure that she will have
- 1:03:07been putting in like a big block and potentially she's been
- 1:03:10working towards this race for a while.
- 1:03:13Yeah, I'd probably go Leanne as well.
- 1:03:15I can't see, we don't know what the Japanese women, the Japanese
- 1:03:17women could come out fighting. But yeah, I can't see past
- 1:03:21Leanne. Hopefully she gets that PB with
- 1:03:23no annoying me so much. That's 69 O1.
- 1:03:25You'd be itching to get under under 69.
- 1:03:28Nice, wouldn't it? And I think they're they're in
- 1:03:30with the men anyway, aren't they?
- 1:03:31Like it's a mixed field. So it's not though Leanne and
- 1:03:35Jess are going to be like out on their own leading just the
- 1:03:38women's race. They're going to be sat in
- 1:03:40amongst the the men as well, so there could be potential for
- 1:03:44fast times there. Do you know the men's fields?
- 1:03:48You know Joel Tobin White, Do you know he would have ran that
- 1:03:51PB 6-7 years ago? What it have been?
- 1:03:54Yeah, it was. I think it was in Japan
- 1:03:55somewhere. I can't remember which one.
- 1:03:57I'm like, I, I don't know if I'd be putting that PB down unless
- 1:04:02he's in that shape because it's been so long.
- 1:04:03Ago, I mean true, but you don't know what the package for being
- 1:04:09in the elite field might have gotten like a free hotel and
- 1:04:12like. He definitely did.
- 1:04:13Yeah, I'll tell. He was meant to do the marathon.
- 1:04:16He was wasn't. He was in.
- 1:04:17There was another marathon debut attempt.
- 1:04:21Has gone to 1/2. I'm just going to pull up the
- 1:04:24Melbourne half results from last year because I know that Izzy,
- 1:04:28Leanne and Jeff's were kind of like 123 Sprint finish, weren't
- 1:04:33they? And I can't remember which order
- 1:04:35it was. Oh, so Leanne won from Jeff's
- 1:04:38from Izzy. So yeah, we're we're back in
- 1:04:42Leanne to kind of double down on that and just not to be able to
- 1:04:46reverse that. But who knows?
- 1:04:48It's it's not clear either way. So we'll see.
- 1:04:50But. Yeah, no.
- 1:04:52So that's this weekend. Annoyingly, this is where, I
- 1:04:56mean, Dean would have been good at various points throughout
- 1:04:59this episode, but Dean would have been good for this because
- 1:05:02there's obviously quite a few front runner guys going over to
- 1:05:05do Gold Coast and because you've been in Ireland, I've been over
- 1:05:09here for six weeks. I haven't even been on straw
- 1:05:12either, so I haven't seen who's kind of training for it and
- 1:05:15stuff. But I know Adam Lamb was, wasn't
- 1:05:19he? I know.
- 1:05:20Oh shit, I thought of someone else earlier.
- 1:05:26But yeah, big up to the front runner crew heading over as
- 1:05:29well. I know that the guys from the WA
- 1:05:34running. Podcast the War.
- 1:05:36They've been targeting it for a while now as well, so keen to
- 1:05:39see how they get on. They've got some big goals and
- 1:05:42they've been trained. About, too.
- 1:05:45That's always a good weekend. Like, out of all the races I've
- 1:05:47done, that Gold Coast Marathon weekend is like the highlight.
- 1:05:51It was so good. The crowd is on top.
- 1:05:54Yeah. It's just, yeah, unreal.
- 1:05:56It's mad that I don't know if we've shared this with listeners
- 1:05:58before, but before me, Dean and Owen actually met each other in
- 1:06:03Perth. We were all at Gold Coast
- 1:06:06Festival last year. Dean and I have done the half
- 1:06:09and I've done the marathon. I've done the 10K.
- 1:06:12Oh, you've done 10K? Sorry.
- 1:06:14Yeah. So we've all done three
- 1:06:15different races there. Did you and Dean, did you speak
- 1:06:18to Dean there? No, no, no.
- 1:06:21Didn't know him. And likewise, I didn't speak to
- 1:06:24either of you either. So it's funny how things work,
- 1:06:27isn't it? It's.
- 1:06:28Crazy. We were all there, but we didn't
- 1:06:30know each other. Look at this now.
- 1:06:34I've got a couple of items in terms of news or talking points
- 1:06:39here. So did you see that Nike in line
- 1:06:42with the breaking four thing kind of dropped the Vomero
- 1:06:45Premium and the Vomero Plus line of the shoes?
- 1:06:49They are that shoes, aren't they?
- 1:06:52Yeah. Which one is the one with the
- 1:06:54biggest stack? Is it the premium?
- 1:06:56Premium, yeah, with two that's got 2 air pods in it.
- 1:06:59I think I'm glad they brought the plus out because that looks
- 1:07:02like a pretty ideal replacement for the Invincible because I
- 1:07:06used to love the Invincibles as like an everyday trainer.
- 1:07:09It looks very similar in terms of how it's built.
- 1:07:14I think that was their plan though to just make push them
- 1:07:16into one and just three different like versions.
- 1:07:20And I seen Connor man saying, I mean, he's a Nike athlete, his
- 1:07:24niece who's literally paid to say this, who's not going to say
- 1:07:26that the rubbish. But he said that the plus, which
- 1:07:30is kind of like you've got the Vimero as the baseline, then you
- 1:07:33have the plus, then you have the premium.
- 1:07:35And he said that the plus is the perfect amount of kind of
- 1:07:39cushion and responsiveness for like a daily trainer for him.
- 1:07:43Oh. Nice.
- 1:07:44I would have compared that. So wait, would you compare that
- 1:07:47to the Super Blast from ASIC? No.
- 1:07:49I don't think it's potentially as versatile as that, Yeah.
- 1:07:54I'd say it's more of an invincible with like a tiny bit
- 1:07:57of spring or something in it. Still a good shoe, yeah?
- 1:08:00Do you know how much what their retailers?
- 1:08:03Haven't seen, to be fair. You don't need to driven out yet
- 1:08:06on sale. For Australian listeners, I
- 1:08:09mean, I don't know how it compares in Ireland, but
- 1:08:10definitely in the UK the price of fuse is a lot more when you
- 1:08:14do the currency conversion. It's bizarre.
- 1:08:16I don't understand it. It's absolutely crazy.
- 1:08:19For reference, a pair of freaking alpha flies could be
- 1:08:25€300 and they're like $330. Yeah, it's obscene. €1.00 gets
- 1:08:31you 1.5 dollars. It works out at like $500 if
- 1:08:36you're convert. It's crazy.
- 1:08:38Yeah, so if anyone's, if any Australians are doing a European
- 1:08:41Tour, don't be buying shoes in the UK or Ireland.
- 1:08:43It's not going to be any cheaper.
- 1:08:45And if you're coming to Ireland, let me know and I'll put in a
- 1:08:47little shopping list. Thank you.
- 1:08:53Secondly, on on my list, I don't know if it may have been
- 1:08:57deliberate, probably wasn't deliberate, but we
- 1:09:02illegitimately got a shout out from Izzy on a podcast last week
- 1:09:06because she was guest house and she said that she went for an
- 1:09:09easy double. I actually seen that as a.
- 1:09:15Like, go on, Izzy. We'll take it.
- 1:09:20Did you see Jacob has been quoted in the week?
- 1:09:23He's obviously about to make his return.
- 1:09:26I don't think he's making pre, but we'll, we'll cover that.
- 1:09:29But he's I think he's over his injury now and he's back in like
- 1:09:32full training. And he said he wants to be the
- 1:09:35best runner to ever exist. Now that is a serious statement,
- 1:09:39isn't it? But like, that's a man with
- 1:09:41intent. I love Jacob, he's so funny,
- 1:09:45he's so good. He's going to be, he's going to
- 1:09:47be there for the world, isn't he?
- 1:09:49I can't wait to see how that unfolds.
- 1:09:51Like I don't want to wish these next couple of months of track
- 1:09:54action away but like shit I can't wait for that.
- 1:09:56And like we're saying about like time off, getting injured,
- 1:09:59coming back better, like he's had a nice little bit of time
- 1:10:02off there and he's just, I think he's going to time out perfect
- 1:10:05to be peeking. For worlds just shows, yeah,
- 1:10:08next. I've seen the Turkey a bid for
- 1:10:11the Olympics and I don't know what year it is.
- 1:10:13I don't know what year we're up to.
- 1:10:15So we've got obviously LA, then Brisbane potentially this next
- 1:10:19one that Turkey are bidding for could be after that 2036 or they
- 1:10:23could even confirm that. But anyway, the bid for the
- 1:10:25Olympics and then something about the BOA athletes of
- 1:10:30Jamaica for like $500,000 each athlete who are going to
- 1:10:36represent Turkey and try and like win medals for them.
- 1:10:40I don't really understand how it how it works.
- 1:10:43But the corruption that goes on in football with like the the
- 1:10:49World Cup hosting and FIFA. I mean, I don't know, could be
- 1:10:54barking up the wrong tree here, but it doesn't sound too
- 1:10:57legitimate in terms of like taking athletes from Jamaica.
- 1:11:02I'm sure they've taken a load of Kenyan athletes as well.
- 1:11:04Yeah, in history, but yeah, look.
- 1:11:09Sebastian Sawway confirmed he's going to Berlin this awesome
- 1:11:14slash spring. Depending on which continent the
- 1:11:16world you're on. But the question is will he be
- 1:11:20targeting a world record or not? Because obviously Berlin is
- 1:11:23notoriously fast and he already has APB of 202 from debut.
- 1:11:29I wouldn't put it past them. He's got, I think he's been
- 1:11:32asked about it in like kind of announcing that he's doing it
- 1:11:36and he's acknowledged that it's a thing like, but he's trying to
- 1:11:40play it down and said it's kind of, it's too early to talk about
- 1:11:44world records. But if you knew that it was
- 1:11:47going to be completely off the charts, you'd be like, no, no,
- 1:11:49no, I'm just going to turn up and race the field, blah, blah.
- 1:11:52So that could be a fast one. Excited to see what happens
- 1:11:56there. The Sydney field got a whole lot
- 1:12:00crazier in the past few days, hasn't it?
- 1:12:03Man, Stefano San is rocking up to Sydney.
- 1:12:06What? It's unbelievable.
- 1:12:08So like everyone thought they'd blown the budget on Kipchogi and
- 1:12:11then they've just announced like the rest of them, which is just,
- 1:12:16it's not like, I don't want to say like the best field in the
- 1:12:18world, but it's a very deep field all around men and women.
- 1:12:23Want some them two or have to get a payday at London?
- 1:12:26They all they need to run is 2 races a year, maybe 2 marathons
- 1:12:29and they're set. So you've got in the women's
- 1:12:31field, Sufan Hassan, who obviously we know about her,
- 1:12:35she's athlete across multiple distances.
- 1:12:39The woman who's she's got PB of 213, the woman who has the
- 1:12:44second fastest PB, Bridget Cosgy also has just played across the
- 1:12:50board. So she's the former world record
- 1:12:52holder, Olympic silver medalist, won five majors.
- 1:12:56There's a woman called working Asia Desa with a period 2/17.
- 1:13:01She won Sydney last year, has the Aussie all comers record.
- 1:13:06And then you've got the Australians of Jeff Stenson
- 1:13:11whose Commonwealth Games gold medalist, 2 time Olympian, Lisa
- 1:13:14Wightman, four time Olympian, 2 time com Games medalist and
- 1:13:19Leanne Pompiani, Scouse accent coming out with me by accident.
- 1:13:24Leanne Pompiani, Leanne Pompiani lad.
- 1:13:30Leanne Pompiani with the PBA 224 on debut with the Aussie debut
- 1:13:36marathon record. So it's great from an
- 1:13:40international perspective and it's potentially like even
- 1:13:42better from a domestic perspective and just shows that
- 1:13:46Sydney offering the all Australian prize money is paying
- 1:13:50off. It's crazy that like, Dean could
- 1:13:52be running in a race with Kip Jogi.
- 1:13:54May I hope he does it, you know, But also I hope he does.
- 1:13:57I hope he does Valencia and gets like the time that he deserves.
- 1:14:02Well, what I feel like he deserves.
- 1:14:04Yeah, he is due. Ballerat does not do justice of
- 1:14:08the shape he's in, and neither does Maragami.
- 1:14:11He he's due a big one and it's it's going to come.
- 1:14:15If you can get on that Valencia start line in half the shape
- 1:14:20that you can get himself in, he's he'll have a big run.
- 1:14:22So yeah. I'm going to try and get out to
- 1:14:25Valencia for that weekend. It'd.
- 1:14:27Be unbelievable. And then lastly, I think we've
- 1:14:30got the pre track meet coming up this weekend in Eugene and I
- 1:14:36think you have the field Owen or some of the fields.
- 1:14:39Yeah, we'll fly through this one.
- 1:14:41So the Bareman Bowerman Mile is the standout headline race.
- 1:14:46So you've got the two Chariots, Randall Chariot, Timothy
- 1:14:50Chariot, Grant Fisher, Neil Gourley, Aberdeen Hadds, Olli,
- 1:14:55Herr Cole Hawker, Hobbs Kessler, Abel Kipsang, Fetus Legat, Niels
- 1:15:01Laros, Michelle Ailey, Cam Meyers, Stefan Nielsen, Jaren
- 1:15:05the Goose and Jake Whiteman. Every single one of them guys
- 1:15:10could run sub 3:30. It is outrageous.
- 1:15:15With how the 1500's been brewing as well, this is just it's going
- 1:15:19to be madness. Yeah, and just for reference, so
- 1:15:22that's the Bareman mile, that's the headline.
- 1:15:25There's a little men's international mile before that
- 1:15:28for the people that couldn't get into it and the likes of Sam
- 1:15:32Ruth from New Zealand, he's like 15 still in school back kids
- 1:15:37running, Adam Spencer is running, Sam Tanner from New
- 1:15:41Zealand is running. And Cooper Tier, like them guys
- 1:15:44are unbelievable. And they couldn't even get in to
- 1:15:46that like elite men's field, which it's just nuts.
- 1:15:50It's crazy. We'll go to the women's 15.
- 1:15:53Yeah, the women's 15. I'll just pick out a few of the
- 1:15:56big names. You have at least Cranny, you've
- 1:15:58got Heylu from Ethiopia, you've got Sarah Healy from Ireland,
- 1:16:02Nikki Hills from the USA, and they who should not be named
- 1:16:06Houlihan from the USA, Jess Hall from Australia, Georgia Bell,
- 1:16:11Georgia Hunter Bell from England, Sage Clacker from USA,
- 1:16:16Sinclair Johnson from USA, Fake UPA Gun from Kenya.
- 1:16:21Could be in. Could be a 1500 world record
- 1:16:24there. Yeah, that is fast.
- 1:16:28Again, like it's outrageous, the standard.
- 1:16:33Yeah, Face could well run the world record there.
- 1:16:36There's a women's 5K as well. You've got good aft SIGAI to be
- 1:16:41honest. You've got how many people in
- 1:16:43this field? 246810121416182022 You've got 24
- 1:16:51people in 5000 meter field you have there's AUSA that when he
- 1:16:57is that Kilteji, do you know that little one from Under
- 1:17:01Armour? Oh yeah.
- 1:17:03She's there, that German one Konstein cluster halfin her.
- 1:17:10She's in a Beatrice Chabet Janet Chefton Getich again.
- 1:17:16It's going to be ridiculously fast, like 14 low fast.
- 1:17:21The majority is made-up by Kenya and Ethiopia.
- 1:17:24There's AI, don't know if there's a women's 10K, but
- 1:17:27there's a men's 10K with an insanely stacked field made-up
- 1:17:30of like the best African 10K runners on the planet, plus
- 1:17:34Conor Mance. Was it last year that Kenya used
- 1:17:38this as a Kenyan trial for the Olympics?
- 1:17:41Potentially. I think they did, yeah.
- 1:17:45But again, there's like the guts of like 18 athletes, all Kenya
- 1:17:48and Ethiopia. And then you've got little
- 1:17:50Connor Mance stuck in there who will definitely be up near the
- 1:17:54front. You've got Solomon, Berrega,
- 1:17:57Aragawi. I hate to keep Brio's Kip Sangs.
- 1:18:02They're saying some of those Africans may Connor may carry
- 1:18:06Connor to AUS record there. Yeah, it's definitely.
- 1:18:10That's all he's going for, 100% What is the US record?
- 1:18:13He seems to just be in like incredible shape year round,
- 1:18:17doesn't he? I don't know how he does it.
- 1:18:19Like his ability to train hard and like consistent is second to
- 1:18:23none. But he doesn't.
- 1:18:25I think they take a full day off as well every week.
- 1:18:27Yeah, so part of it, weren't it? Yeah, but yeah, I don't know how
- 1:18:32you can even watch this event because it's definitely behind a
- 1:18:36paywall. 2633 potentially is the US 10 K 10,000 meter record.
- 1:18:43Grant Fisher is it? I will be wearing it.
- 1:18:47Lastly on the Instagram. We had a couple of thoughts come
- 1:18:51through when I've opened it up for questions and stuff.
- 1:18:55If we've got any thoughts on Dead Cow Gully, I'm actually not
- 1:18:58sure what that is. So I'm going to do my research
- 1:19:00after this. And now it's some kind of race
- 1:19:03slash event in Australia, an ultra marathon event, but out of
- 1:19:08backyard ultra. On the subject of backyard
- 1:19:11ultra, we should pay respect and acknowledge that Phil Gore, the
- 1:19:15WA athlete, broke the world record of backyard ultras.
- 1:19:19And now we've kind of been a little bit controversial in our
- 1:19:22opinions on them. But he ran, I think it was 119
- 1:19:26yards, which quickly for those who don't know, backyard ultra
- 1:19:30is you run around 6K on the hour, every hour until you are
- 1:19:34the last man standing. And he ran 119 of them, which
- 1:19:38meant it ran from Sunday to Thursday.
- 1:19:43It's just obscene. Wow, when you put it like that.
- 1:19:46So 119 * 6 is some disgusting #714km / 4 days with hard games
- 1:19:59week besides like 10 minute power naps here and there.
- 1:20:02It's just I physically can't comprehend that.
- 1:20:05Like it's a different world to me.
- 1:20:08Yeah, I won't be doing that many times soon.
- 1:20:11Dean will probably rock up to 1. Yeah, there'll be like a 2 grand
- 1:20:15payday somewhere and Dean will find it and.
- 1:20:24This is a post recording little add on because Simon from the WA
- 1:20:28Running podcast, Rosen and he asked when things you say to
- 1:20:33yourself, when the when it gets, when the going gets hard in a
- 1:20:36marathon. And well, firstly,
- 1:20:39congratulations on anyone who is doing Gold Coast on Sunday and
- 1:20:42you've made it this far because the hard work is done.
- 1:20:45Secondly, that's a it's a great line of thought during this week
- 1:20:49because I guess it shows that you're prepared to suffer and
- 1:20:53you're thinking about every eventuality.
- 1:20:55Like what will I do if if it doesn't go to plan And like I'm
- 1:20:58in the trenches during that last 10K.
- 1:21:02So I mean, I've only done 3. So arguably not the best place
- 1:21:05to advise on this. But obviously things have got
- 1:21:08tough for me in the past and I've I've tried to battle
- 1:21:10through it. So it's also important to
- 1:21:13acknowledge that it should feel easy or very comfortable for the
- 1:21:17first half. And then after that is when you
- 1:21:20start to go to work and when you might be drawing on these
- 1:21:22mantras or as Deeks described it at last year's Gold Coast.
- 1:21:26I'm not sure if he'll be doing the speech again, but I hope he
- 1:21:28does because he gave the best fire up ever.
- 1:21:32I don't know where he found the energy at 6/15, 6:00 AM in the
- 1:21:36pitch dark. But yeah, him on that stand was
- 1:21:39unbelievable. So he said the marathon begins
- 1:21:41at 30K in an incredibly dramatic voice.
- 1:21:45So yeah, that's where you need to be concentrated and ready to
- 1:21:49go to war. What I would say to answer the
- 1:21:52question is remember the training that you've done.
- 1:21:55So think about those dark, cold mornings in the middle of your
- 1:22:00massive training weeks. We've somehow found something
- 1:22:03within you to complete a big nasty session.
- 1:22:07Remember those sessions which filled you with fear on paper
- 1:22:10and by the end of them, you walked away confident, knowing
- 1:22:13that your goal was achievable? Like draw upon those feelings of
- 1:22:18confidence throughout your training because the work has
- 1:22:22been done. So when you get tired, then you
- 1:22:25you feel that your form is starting to go.
- 1:22:27Think about cadence. So like keeping those legs
- 1:22:30turning over quick, quick, quick.
- 1:22:32Think about picking your knees up so that you stride doesn't
- 1:22:35shorten too much. So what I would say is like
- 1:22:38being concentrated or being present in the moment during
- 1:22:42that last 10K is very important because as much as you want to
- 1:22:47distract yourself from the pain, if you drift off too much,
- 1:22:50that's where the time can just fall away from you.
- 1:22:52So in the first half, you're going to be tapered, you're
- 1:22:56going to be fueled, you're going to be like flying.
- 1:22:58It should come relatively easy to you.
- 1:23:01So that's where trying to distract yourself from just
- 1:23:03taking it all in, enjoying it is good.
- 1:23:05But then when it gets tough, you want to really like dial in the
- 1:23:10concentration levels as Ref says, fear and anxiety in one
- 1:23:15hand and hopes and dreams in the other.
- 1:23:17And you have to allow them to coexist.
- 1:23:19So at different points throughout the race, you're
- 1:23:21going to feel awful, you're going to doubt yourself, you're
- 1:23:24going to think, I can't do this. You're going to want to stop at
- 1:23:26over points during the race. You're going to think, shit, I'm
- 1:23:29on PB, going to break my goal. This is easy, I'm flying.
- 1:23:34And you just have to allow all of that to exist at the same
- 1:23:38time or in the same race. You need to be the middle ground
- 1:23:42and like the the realism between it and you have to acknowledge
- 1:23:46it when it comes. But then try to centre yourself
- 1:23:49and realign. And hopefully at the end of the
- 1:23:51day, you'll lean slightly more towards the hopes and dreams and
- 1:23:54you will have a great performance.
- 1:23:57So if you're in that last 10K is getting painfully horrible and
- 1:24:02lots of people work off 5K splits or two or three K splits
- 1:24:07during the marathon just because it's so long.
- 1:24:09And if you don't case it would be so many and you don't, well
- 1:24:12arguably you don't need that feedback every 3456 minutes,
- 1:24:17whatever it may be. But if you are working off like
- 1:24:192K3K5K split, perhaps just start to manually split your watch K
- 1:24:25by K, break it down and just make the goal posts that bit
- 1:24:28closer and shorter. Because if you are starting to
- 1:24:32drift and you're, let's say for example, you're targeting sub
- 1:24:35three hours, which is I think 4:15 or around there per
- 1:24:40kilometer. And if you're working off a 5K
- 1:24:42split. So you just look, you're looking
- 1:24:44at your watch, you're getting the split every 5K and you're
- 1:24:47hoping to see 2115 or around there.
- 1:24:50If you're starting to hurt and tire, that 2115 could easily
- 1:24:55come up 23 minutes and by that point it's almost too late to
- 1:24:59rectify it. Like you've got a minute 45 to
- 1:25:02catch up and you're only getting more tired and more fatigued.
- 1:25:05If instead of working off the 5K split, you just go K by K by K,
- 1:25:11the first one, you might see a 420 or you might see a 425, but
- 1:25:16you've then got the opportunity to do something about it and to
- 1:25:19try and like squeeze it down as minimal as you can.
- 1:25:23So rather than running four 30s or 430 fives over the 5K split
- 1:25:29without realizing, you might just squeeze out some 418, some
- 1:25:33420 ones. And you can kind of just be a
- 1:25:36bit more deliberate with it in terms of any mantras which I've
- 1:25:39used because I know some people use these like just kind of a
- 1:25:43couple of words to draw upon and just like keep repeating.
- 1:25:47They don't really have to mean anything.
- 1:25:49But if you are in the moment enough to be able to think about
- 1:25:53these, it can just help kind of almost repeat them to yourself
- 1:25:57as you take in each footstep. So I remember 1 I used them.
- 1:26:00A first one, I don't know where it came from.
- 1:26:03I think I just thought of it one day in training was fit fast,
- 1:26:06strong, fit fast, strong. And it's just kind of that like
- 1:26:09positive reinforcement to yourself.
- 1:26:11Or for example, at Ballarat, I remember RAF was on the sideline
- 1:26:16and I think this was like race specific to the day and kind of
- 1:26:21how it played out. But he kept saying position in
- 1:26:25patients fuelling. And it was just that reminder to
- 1:26:28like allow the race to come to you and just keep getting your
- 1:26:32gels in, keep getting your gels down and just stay calm and stay
- 1:26:35relaxed because it's it's such a long time that you're out there
- 1:26:39for you. You really do just need to stay
- 1:26:41calm. And what else I would think
- 1:26:44about is obviously when you're struggling, when you're hurting,
- 1:26:48whatever result you get out of this, like if you can dig in now
- 1:26:52and grind it out, nobody can ever take it away from you.
- 1:26:55Like it lasts forever. You may go on to run faster than
- 1:26:59it, and hopefully that is the case.
- 1:27:01But if this is your PB for life, then that's it.
- 1:27:04It's not like it's going to be rubbed out after five years that
- 1:27:07this is an achievement for lifetime.
- 1:27:09So try to draw on that. Think about what you've
- 1:27:11sacrificed during training. So to get to this position, I'm
- 1:27:16sure many people will have sacrificed social events,
- 1:27:18perhaps things with family. So just kind of think about what
- 1:27:22you've put in to give yourself this opportunity to perform.
- 1:27:26Think about who you want to make proud.
- 1:27:27Like you might be doing it for a certain family member, a child,
- 1:27:31whatever. If that is the case, then think
- 1:27:34about them. Ultimately, there's there's no
- 1:27:37pressure from anyone else. All of the pressure that you
- 1:27:39might feel just comes from yourself.
- 1:27:41Because at the end of the day, yeah, people might like see your
- 1:27:45result and think one thing or the other, but no one's really
- 1:27:47that bothered. Like it's all for yourself and
- 1:27:50to satisfy what you think and what you know you're capable of
- 1:27:54and what you deserve. Like times just a number and the
- 1:27:58achievement is in the completion itself.
- 1:28:01So like those who've done a marathon knows what it feels
- 1:28:04like to cross that finish line. And sometimes regardless of
- 1:28:08whether it's a PB or not, the feeling of finishing is still
- 1:28:12just like an emotional release. So if you are hurt and then it
- 1:28:16does get tough, just think about crossing that finish line during
- 1:28:20that last part of the race. There's going to be people
- 1:28:22falling off and blowing up everywhere.
- 1:28:25So if you're not part of a group, then just use the next
- 1:28:28person in front of you to put a target on the back and just reel
- 1:28:32yourself in. Essentially like shooting a bow
- 1:28:35and arrow with a string attached to it.
- 1:28:38And then you just pull yourself in.
- 1:28:39And lastly, one which I've used in the past is asking yourself,
- 1:28:44how much do you want it? This.
- 1:28:45That's one I've used in training before, like when you're trying
- 1:28:48to go out at half five in the morning, 6:00 AM in the cold or
- 1:28:52in the wet in the dark. All you have to do is say to
- 1:28:55yourself, how much do you want it?
- 1:28:56And then bang you there fired up because you know you do want it.
- 1:29:00You know what you've done to get to this point.
- 1:29:03So if you can just ask yourself that question when it gets
- 1:29:06tough, how much do you want it? Guarantee your body and your
- 1:29:10brain will answer in actions and it'll just, it'll get you there.
- 1:29:15So that was my one piece of an answer.
- 1:29:18I'm sure Dean would have been able to add some value to this
- 1:29:21as well. But yeah, good luck everyone for
- 1:29:24the Gold Coast this weekend and I hope the mantras come through.
- 1:29:29And I think that is US done. For the week.
- 1:29:32So guys, if you're still listening and you've stayed the
- 1:29:35whole way through, if you don't follow us on Instagram, easy
- 1:29:38double pod. If you haven't given us five
- 1:29:40star review, fire that up on Spotify.
- 1:29:43It'd be very well received because someone's gone on there
- 1:29:46and given us a non five star review because we now sit at 4.4
- 1:29:50stars. No way.
- 1:29:53I mean if you're doing it for banter it's not that much
- 1:29:58banter, but if it's your honest opinion then I guess that's
- 1:30:03fine. If he is like the interview
- 1:30:06series and send us a message and see who you like, let us know
- 1:30:10he's want to get on because I don't know how we got Jake
- 1:30:12Barclough on, but yeah, look, you never know who we can get
- 1:30:16on. Yeah, let's keep it realistic,
- 1:30:18but let's shoot for the stars. I reckon we've got a couple of
- 1:30:22candidates up our sleeve who we will reach out to.
- 1:30:26Yeah. We'll leave Khichogi for the
- 1:30:28when he comes to Sydney with them.
- 1:30:30We'll interview him then. Yeah, we'll just say speak to
- 1:30:32him in person. Hey.
- 1:30:34Yeah. All right.
- 1:30:37Thanks guys. Cheers.
- 1:30:40Ciao. Good luck.
