- 1:25the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. The original air date August twentieth, nineteen forty
- 1:30nine and the title The Lady Killer Get this and get it straight. Crime
- 1:34is a sucker's road, and those who travel had wind up in the gut
- 1:38of the prison of the grave, this time inside of two hours. A
- 1:41lavish mansion seeds with suspicion, a sealed cabin filled with gas, and an
- 1:45artist retreat had a copse on the floor, all because one man was too
- 1:49good looking to be true to anyone. From the pen of Raymond Chandler,
- 1:55outstanding author of mister A, comes his most famous character and crime's most deadly
- 1:59animated. As we present the Adventures of Philip Marlowe now with Gerald Moore starred
- 2:14as Philip Marlowe, we bring you tonight's exciting story, The Lady Killer.
- 2:30Longer I sat in my office with my feet up on the desk and thought
- 2:32about it, the more convinced I became. Paul Niles was unquestionably the handsomest
- 2:38man I'd ever seen. He had faced it belonged than a Greek god,
- 2:43only his features were better and more finely chiseled. They looked as though they
- 2:46had been molded out of alabaster from a blueprint by some inspired genius. On
- 2:51the classic side view we presented made the great profile show up like a bowl
- 2:54full of shredded wheat. In fact, the guy was much too good to
- 2:58be true in more ways than one, which had been my original impression of
- 3:01Niles when I'd first met him just two hours ago at the corner of Sunset
- 3:05and Coenga, and at his insistence, had driven him around the quietest streets
- 3:08of Hollywood in my car while he tried to hire me. He was scared
- 3:13stiff, that was all he would admit to, And as he talked,
- 3:15I wondered what it would be like to have a face like that. Must
- 3:19become quite a problem women cluttering up your life, Marlo. You're not listening
- 3:23to me unless you help me. I'm going to be killed soon, tomorrow,
- 3:29tonight, maybe in the next ten minutes. I must have protection from
- 3:31what. Who's after a girl? Her name is Norah Kirby. She's threatened
- 3:36my life and now she's here in town. She actually intends to go through
- 3:38with it if I'm not where she's staying. I went there to talk to
- 3:42her, but she was out. Why is killing you so important to her?
- 3:45Well, I don't even know for sure. It's something ridiculous. Norah
- 3:51Kirby obviously doesn't think so let's have it, Niles. Why I can't tell
- 3:55you that I see? Also, I suppose you know to take this to
- 4:00the police where it belongs, and you can't give me the reason for that
- 4:01either. Yes, I came to you because I need private health and I'm
- 4:05willing to pay well for it. Now, you don't have to concern yourself
- 4:08for the reasons. Simply see that, Nora doesn't get to me now here
- 4:13as a starter. Here, it's two hundred dollars for just that. Keep
- 4:15it. I only accept money from the people I work for. You mean
- 4:18you won't help me. I just want to know where I'm going before I
- 4:20start. No, wait, you don't do it off here. Don't you
- 4:24understand my life's in danger. I'm scared, not enough to listen to your
- 4:27tongue any Hey, this is as far as I go. But tell me
- 4:30one thing first, just for laughs, what business are you in? Why?
- 4:33I'm a composer. I write music. The way you said it,
- 4:38it's either a front or a hobby. How do you get your dough?
- 4:40I have friends, wealthy ones who have faith in me, and that's more
- 4:44than I can say for Marlow. So along, mister Niles, go on
- 4:47out all right, but here at least take my card and please call if
- 4:51you change your mind. I'm desperate, Marlow. I'll pay you even more
- 4:55if you'll only eat. Good bye, mister Niles. That was the way
- 5:05I'd left it two hours ago at eight, and I spent the time in
- 5:09between trying to referee a tug of warre in progress with the feeling I had
- 5:12that I'd been stuffy on one end and I under nourished bank account on the
- 5:15other, and was slowly but surely getting no place. So when the break
- 5:19came, I grabbed at it. Hello Marlo speaking Milo, This is Paul
- 5:24Niles again. Oh, I've thought it over. I'll tell you everything if
- 5:27that's the only way, because I've got to have help before it's too late.
- 5:30That's better. Where I am in my studio thirty eight ninety three.
- 5:31I'venito del Saul thirty eight ninety feet. That's off col Whatater Canyon isn't YT's
- 5:35not get over here right away? Where do you want to wait a minute?
- 5:38Follow? There's someone here. Somebody just came in. Now what Niles?
- 5:42Who's there? Who is it? Laurah? There? O Niles Miles.
- 5:53When Niles phone went dead. I hung up random my car was headed
- 5:56for Colwater Canyon before I stopped to think of what I'd heard on the telephone
- 5:58could very easily have been eight for a Patsy routine, because I had nothing
- 6:01more to go on now than before except Niles promised to tell all that I
- 6:05got no further than gunshots. But I was already well on one easy way
- 6:10to find out, so I cockscrewed my way over the mountains to have a
- 6:12Nato Dell's sol and followed it to number thirty eight ninety three, which was
- 6:15a straight up driveway ande narrowly into the hill face that ended on a gravel
- 6:19shelf just big enough for the red wooden glass studio, a generous helping him
- 6:23import a jungle for landscaping in a circular parking space. As my headlights slashed
- 6:28across the tangle of overhanging trees in the center, they trapped the figure of
- 6:30a woman running. She stopped, crouched and looked back into the glare like
- 6:33a cat do's, and dotted to the darkness skin. I caught her at
- 6:38the corner of the house just a minute, maybe not so fast on the
- 6:41curt Let me go so we've been properly introduced and had a chance to talk
- 6:45a lot of things over Norah Norah, Yeah, Nora, a Kirby girl
- 6:48with murder on her mind. No, No, you got the wrong person.
- 6:50My name is not Nora, it's Lynn. I don't know anyone like
- 6:54that. Lynn. What Lynn Harten? Lyn Horton? Okay, Lynn Horton?
- 7:00What's inside that got you so panicy? Can hardly stand up? Is
- 7:03it Paul Niles? Yes? I gotta get away from here. And it
- 7:09actually happened? Eh? He was shut? Is he dead? I don't
- 7:13know, I think so how did you know about it? Who are you?
- 7:17Name's Marlow? Come on, Lynn Horton, let's take another look.
- 7:20No, no, I couldn't bear. I can see him through the window.
- 7:25It means you must have been inside. No, no, I wantn't
- 7:29look. Maybe you're too generator to try to lie. Let's have the key,
- 7:30come on, give it's better after you go on inside. Now where
- 7:40is it? Yeah? Then come over here, away from him. I
- 7:49can't believe. I can't what's your connection with him? I was just a
- 7:56friend. I tried to help him with his music. No price on them
- 8:00merchandise. You're wearing you must be one of those mentioned. What do you
- 8:03mean you got doughnut shows? We lit'll skip that. Assuming you didn't kill
- 8:07him, you must have had some reason for showing up here at night.
- 8:09What was it? Oh? I only wanted it? Did you hear that
- 8:13someone's outside theah? I get the light there on the terrace something moved down
- 8:18there. Going out to see what it is, and listen. There's no
- 8:20such thing as welcome visited, just now, baby, So you stay here,
- 8:22understand it, don't budge. I felt my way out the door,
- 8:28down the stone steps, started where we've seen the movement along the wall at
- 8:30the far end of the terrace. There was no sound, nothing moment,
- 8:33whether it made the noise had gotten away clean. So I headed back to
- 8:37the house, and that's when I heard it. I started after over,
- 8:39my shin against the first rock goten stopped me cold. Instead, I listened
- 8:43to her drive away, called myself a few unpleasant names, and concluded that
- 8:48Lynn Horton or whatever her real name was, had been quite as scared as
- 8:52she acted. After I limped inside, turned on the light and reached the
- 8:56phone, I stopped at the word and above a pretty girl's picture on a
- 9:01newspaper clipping sticking out of Paul niles pocket. He carried a New York dateline
- 9:05and said that Nora Kirby, convicted of man slaughter in a traffic accident,
- 9:09had been released after serving three years. At the bottom of the story,
- 9:13scrawled and ink was the message, three years for something I didn't do,
- 9:16to get something I couldn't have. It's not fair, Paul, I'll be
- 9:20seeing you. Who signed Nora? I picked up the phone again. In
- 9:24a few minutes later, the technical tenant, Matthews at Homicide was up to
- 9:26date. Okay, I'll be right out. And you say this girl Laura
- 9:31Kirby did tomorrow, I said. Paul Niles was expecting her too, and
- 9:35it looks like she did so. I looked as another angle though, the
- 9:37woman who just beat it away from here, I want to call herself Lynn
- 9:39Barker. Yeah, yeah, that somebody else who was snooping around outside too,
- 9:45who also got away from you. You're doing real well. No,
- 9:50wait a minute, wait, do you see this joint you'll understand. Besides,
- 9:52I'm in this for curiosity only now my paycheck got murdered, remember,
- 9:56And furthermore, I yo have matches when I want them, I said,
- 10:01I'm looking for some matches. No, there's some m the strangest matches I've
- 10:09ever seen. What about them? I got a velvet cover on him?
- 10:13So what a velvet book of matches? Hey, hey, Matthews, do
- 10:16you ever hear the name Negrotto? Yeah? Sure, able Negrato. It's
- 10:22a big name in the music publishing business, made most of his fortunate and
- 10:26records puts in Beverly Hills. You know, I got a dandy hunch.
- 10:30I'm gonna go have a talk with mister Negrotto. Lieutenant Okay, on one
- 10:33condition, be careful what you say, Marlow, and keep in touch.
- 10:52Good evening. You aren't mister Negrotto, No I'm not. I'm Garret Horton.
- 10:56Mister Negratto is busy Horton. Yes, they were along? Was that?
- 11:01No? No, it's a more common name than I suspected that.
- 11:03So, but it's all mist Negrotto. I'd like to see him for a
- 11:07few minutes at an urgent matter. Names Marlow, Perhaps you didn't understand me.
- 11:09Mister Negrotto and I are in the middle of a business conference. We
- 11:11can't be disturbed. No, you can't be desturbed. Well, look,
- 11:13mister Horton, a man was murdered to night, and one trail leads from
- 11:16the corps straight to this front door. The Negrotto talks to me here now
- 11:20or later at police headquarters you decide, well, that's where you feel come
- 11:24in. You're an officer, not exactly, I'm a private detective. I
- 11:28see, well, follow me, tell me. He led the way through
- 11:37what looked like the outer lobby of the taj mahavel and down a silk patted
- 11:41car to do a set of cob doors that would have fit any round house
- 11:43in the country. When we walked in, a man glanced up on a
- 11:46stack of papers and with a pair of eyes that belonged on a shock.
- 11:50It is best to look a hole from me, Horton introduced us. This
- 11:54is mister Marlow, private detective, mister Negrotto. I'm looking for a girl
- 11:58named Norah cur Be in connection with the murder of one Paul Niles tonight.
- 12:03She either committed the murderer knows who did, because she was nan saw it.
- 12:05And what exactly brings you to my house? Well, I found this
- 12:09book of matches near the door of the dead man's studio. I think it's
- 12:11yours. It is. Go on, any idea how it got there?
- 12:16None? Whatever? And until you mention their names, I'd never heard of
- 12:20either Nora Kirby or Paul Niles. How about you, mister Horton. No,
- 12:24I'm afraid not. Oh there's my wife now, I'm sure you want
- 12:26to give her the third degree too. Just a moment, Lynn, Lynn
- 12:31Darling, I'm in here, Please, Lynn, This is mister Marlow.
- 12:37How do you do, mister Marlow, I'm glad to know you. I'm
- 12:39sure thanks, I'm pleased to meet you. Missus Negrotto, your brother,
- 12:43and I have been trying to convince Marlow here that we didn't commit murder tonight,
- 12:48but he thinks we did because he found this book of our matches near
- 12:50the corpse. Can you explain it, my dear? Why? No,
- 12:56I can't remember a man's name? Was Niles? Lynn? Paul Niles?
- 12:58Mean anything? No? Nothing? How about Nora Kirby. I don't think
- 13:03i've ever heard the name before. Well, Marlow, that would seem to
- 13:07take care of the book of matches, not completely. It was found at
- 13:09the house of the dead man. Remember, we've had hundreds of these made
- 13:13up passed them out freely. I think you've taken up quite enough of our
- 13:16time with this absurd business model. So now I'll ask you to leave.
- 13:20I'll show you up. Don't bother. Now listen to Grotto and listen closely.
- 13:24I've been taking it easy so far. But somebody in this room is
- 13:28absolutely certain how those matches got out there. I know that for a fact,
- 13:31and I'm a private detective. Don't forget. So if you suddenly remember
- 13:35something that needs talking over, it'll be in my office for one hour,
- 13:39but not one single minute longer. Good night. Oh in just a moment,
- 13:56the second act of Philip Marlow. But first, every Sunday afternoon,
- 14:00CBS brings you two outstanding programs of music. Gems from the great composers played
- 14:05by the sympinet, and the sweet memorable songs of the outstanding modern composers and
- 14:09semi classicists sung by the coroliers. Each program is designed especially for fine Sunday
- 14:16afternoon listening. Here both the sympinet and coroliers this Sunday afternoon on most of
- 14:20these same CBS stations. Now, with our star Gerald Moore, we returned
- 14:26to the second act of Philo Marlowe and Tonight's story The Lady Killer. When
- 14:37I started back from my office on Cowinga, I figured that there was an
- 14:41even chance that the double talk I'd left in my weight might stack up in
- 14:43the center of the ne grotto living room floor like so much dynamite, which,
- 14:48if touched off by the book of matches, could cause an explosion that
- 14:50would jah loose a few facts about the lives and loves of the late Paul
- 14:54Niles, facts that would make finding Nora Kirby and clearly understanding her motives something
- 14:58less than possible. And twenty minutes later, when I was slunched behind my
- 15:03desk and listening to the sta cuttle report of a pair of high heels clicking
- 15:07shop and toward my door, I had a hunch that my theory of violent
- 15:11detonation was not just pushable thinking. When the door opened without the formality of
- 15:16the knock, that hunch turned a sure thing because the visitor was the not
- 15:20quite lady call Lynn Tomorrow, and before she could speak a police the phone
- 15:22rang. I'm sure thing graduated the cinch. It was another Negrotto, the
- 15:26one named Abel Mallow. I suppose it's stupid w do you make this club,
- 15:31but frankly your visit here has left me curious. There you have a
- 15:33minute, Yeah, I think so, hol A WHI when I need a
- 15:37light with me in a second, missus Vangrana. All right, but what
- 15:39I have to say is important, Mala, so make it fast, just
- 15:43as fast as I can. I don't think your husband as much to say
- 15:46to me what people you're talking? Yeah, I didn't mind handing me those
- 15:50matches names. Thanks hello, Sorry to have kept you waiting, mister Negrotto.
- 15:58I never seemed to be able to hang out matches. That's odd.
- 16:00You apparently did all right on that score tonight. Model the reason for the
- 16:03call more or less, Mono, You know as well as I do that
- 16:08servants, guests, anyone who's ever been in my home could have left those
- 16:12matches near the body of that Paul Niles. That's right, mister Negrotto.
- 16:15Anybody, which also includes you and your wife, your brother in law and
- 16:18others in the family are still the meat. What's your point please, I'm
- 16:21in a hurry. Very well, Mono. I call to find out if
- 16:25you're holding anything back from me. If this murder concerns that the grotto is
- 16:29beyond the appearance of those matches. I can't say because there is something,
- 16:33because I don't know anything else. No, there is bad, yes,
- 16:40Mono, there is to be honest. I admire them. Where you handle
- 16:44the situation? What's your address? I may have worked for you soon tonight,
- 16:48thanks mister Nogrado, but I don't think I'll be available, at least
- 16:51not till I get throw the job I'm on, which is what handling dynamite
- 16:55while I play with books at matches. Good night, sir. What did
- 17:00he want la mine? Other things? An expressed desire to hire me to
- 17:03do what report on you? I suppose he didn't say. What makes you
- 17:07think that's what he wanted? Addition, missus Negrato, a rich old husband,
- 17:12a beautiful but bored young wife and unemployed Donnis always had up the same
- 17:15way. Also, you were here in my office just about clinches things.
- 17:18Not to mention your presence near the corpse the key. You're you and I've
- 17:22heard enough. Marlow. Look, I didn't want to get mixed up with
- 17:26Paul. I couldn't help myself. I swear I couldn't. He was different,
- 17:30Marlow, handsome, more charm than i'd ever known in anyone. Yeah,
- 17:34real, lady killer, I know what are you getting at? Just
- 17:37this? I'll pay you any price your name only. Don't tell Able that
- 17:41I had anything to do with Niles. He's a jealous man, Marlow,
- 17:45insanely jealous. If he knew about it, he'd kill Missus Negrato. I
- 17:51don't know, Marlow, what do you want right now? Everything you know
- 17:55about Nora Kirby, but I've never heard of her before to night. No,
- 17:57I'm not, it's the truth. Now, what do you want?
- 18:03Nothing? Good night? You mean you won't say anything? Oh my,
- 18:08I don't know how to thank you. Don't try. Also, don't get
- 18:12mixed up about me, baby. The fact that I won't blackmail you doesn't
- 18:15mean I don't like you. And the door, Missus Negrado, leave it
- 18:18open on your way out, will you. I'm expecting another visitor. No,
- 18:22my husband, No, just another man. He ain't commn and a
- 18:25triumphant I once left some dynamite with I won't bother explaining that. Goodbye,
- 18:30Missus Decrado. Mm hmm you a great, big, beautiful time. Oh
- 18:41my name mister Harton, I've been waiting for you. Why mister Morrow,
- 18:45something I said or didn't say at the house. Not exactly. It's more
- 18:48a matter of intuition, high explosives, and the fact that both your brother
- 18:52in law and sister have already paid their respects. What can I do for
- 18:56you? I'm not at all sure the first time. I'm only here I
- 19:00noticed something very strange about the way my sister looked at you when you spoke
- 19:03of the murder of this Paul Niles. When she left the house shortly after
- 19:07you did, I followed her here. All of which makes the next question,
- 19:10why, mister Horton, Because I don't trust her, and more important,
- 19:12every penny I own is tied up in a business venture of mine that
- 19:15her husband is backing. She originally met Abel through me, and if she
- 19:19should in some way be in trouble, the kind of trouble that her husband
- 19:22wouldn't put up with, I might suffer for it in the long run,
- 19:26right along with her. Ah huh. And by the trouble, mister Horton,
- 19:29you're referring to something specific. I am, Lynn has had a very
- 19:33well, very mixed up background, bellow, So it's entirely feasible that in
- 19:37some way she's connected with this Nora you spoke of who killed Paul Niles.
- 19:41You mean as an accomplice or even as accessory before or after the fact.
- 19:45Pretty thoughts about your own system, which I can't help. I doubt that
- 19:48you have anything to worry about, mister Horton. However, I will say
- 19:52this that if Nora Kirby hadn't gotten a Paul Niles sooner or lady would have
- 19:55had plenty to worry about. You mean, I mean that now is a
- 19:57great time you had to go home and sit on your investment. All is
- 20:00well, mister Houghton, at the time being a moment after Houghton left the
- 20:10office, I came to the hollow conclusion that although my little bombshell had exploded
- 20:12on schedule, damages had been light and a jot loosen, neither fact nor
- 20:15fancy about the late Paul Niles, and much less about the allusive miss Norah
- 20:19Kirby. So my next move had to be a second trip to Haven't need
- 20:22it, del sall in a report the detective Lieutenant Matthews, which is what
- 20:26I was about to do when it came from someplace outside Long and Love.
- 20:33I ran the length of the cart outside my door and fellow down the single
- 20:37fighter stats to the street, where, in the half light of a distant
- 20:38lamppost, saw the shadowed figure of a girl slipped behind my cot and tore
- 20:42the store front nearby. I started after her and stopped at a noise behind
- 20:47me, which was a mistake. Oh oh, honey, for yourself together.
- 21:03You're the one who screamed, screamed, honey, you have got it.
- 21:07Dad, listen, this is just silly. Hello, relax, honey,
- 21:11you're look your cop didn't come along first. Being drunk is one thing,
- 21:15The DTS is something else. I know last year I was in the
- 21:18same shape and it took me three much. Wait a minute, Look,
- 21:22I was slug and I slipped a Mickey su honest, slug honest. If
- 21:27you don't mind giving me a hand, I'll get up. Oh easy money.
- 21:33Sorry, I figured you're all wrong. You never thought you were slugged.
- 21:37Any idea who's done it? I'll tell me. Didn't you see anything
- 21:41before you found me? Honey? Then every girl screams here, nothing at
- 21:44all. Honey. You must have been out longer and you thought, maybe,
- 21:48hey, hey, look this this card here on the cap. What's
- 21:52your name, honey, I'll tell you why. I'll tell you more than
- 21:56that. You know who slugged your honey. A polite guy, a very
- 22:00polite guy who left his card you're engraved in all Paul Niles. Now it
- 22:03I used to a work squize. Niles gave me that card earlier the night,
- 22:10must have dropped it just now. Also, Niles is dead, and
- 22:11that you and what back of that card there in princ will give me that
- 22:15Woody Gray's Motel ten hundred ten. I mincha of Boulevard Bungalow nine, sweetheart.
- 22:21I may have something good here about who's loved you better than that,
- 22:23about who killed Niles and where she could be found. If I love,
- 22:27Here's five for your trouble and bless you. As I piled into my car,
- 22:33I knew that putting niles conversation piece about having just come from Nora's place
- 22:37when he first met me, together with the address on the back of his
- 22:40card, was taking a lot for granted, I sold myself to playing a
- 22:42long shot was better than not betting on anything at all, and I kept
- 22:45driving fast. When I came to a stop away from the place, which
- 22:48was run down, spread out in quiet I had a feeling that what I
- 22:52had ere marked long shot was quickly moving up to even money. And when
- 22:55I was standing next to the motel Bungalow mark nine, that feeling became fact
- 22:59because was inside and piled in an awkward heap on the floor. There was
- 23:03a still phone of the girl, the newspaper clipping it later Nora Kirby.
- 23:06It was another full second before I realized something even more important. On a
- 23:10hot night in August, there wasn't a single window open, and Nora Kirby
- 23:14was headdled close to a guess either that was on but showed no flame.
- 23:17I picked up a stone at my feet, took one deep breath, and
- 23:21then crashed the pane of glass, unlocked the window, and got inside.
- 23:22Over the girl. Why, I figured it was taking a hasty way out
- 23:26of a murder that she no doubt had a very personal reason to commit.
- 23:29I stopped figuring. When I was kneeling next to her. I knew that
- 23:32she was still alive and that a man gripping a forty five in his hand
- 23:36it just opened the front door. Go make another movement lower, I'll kill
- 23:38you well, comes the switch. Brother in law, Garrett Haughton, I
- 23:45never would have guessed. You wouldn't have had to try if you kept your
- 23:47nose clean. No, get away from her. Why so she can die
- 23:52as a suicide, which the police will chalk off is logical since she's already
- 23:55wanted for murder. It, you know, doubt committed exactly murder I committed
- 23:59because there is anything worse one can do to a blackmail So that's it,
- 24:03Niles, Lady killer was blackmailing your sister. You found out and killed him
- 24:07before it could cause too much trouble, family trouble. It would end up
- 24:11hurting the good thing you've got with husband, Abel. Huh, No,
- 24:14shut up and get away from it. We're going outside. You're kidding,
- 24:15Marlow, Marlow, I'll shoot you if you don't start walking. You're still
- 24:19kidding, But you can't kill me without killing yourself. This room is jammed
- 24:23tight with a gash you turned on after you brought her in here unconscious.
- 24:27Happy, I satter outside of my place because she was on her way to
- 24:30see me and tell me that you would murdered Niles. The flash from that
- 24:33gun in your hand, Horton, will blow us all the bits they said,
- 24:36brother, for you it's all or nothing at all. Go on,
- 24:37shoot, go on, try it, Try it, Doctor Gorson, Please
- 25:00report to what you've been seeing Miss Kirby. Now, mister marlow She's going
- 25:03to be all right, but hold it down to a few minutes, all
- 25:07right, doctor, just a few minutes. Hello, Nora, it's been
- 25:11a long time getting together. Huh yeah, but not through any fall of
- 25:15mine. Mister Marlow. I followed you from the moment you left Paul's place,
- 25:18but I wanted to see you alone, so I kept waiting for my
- 25:22chance, which was canceled out when Horton spotted you after he left my office.
- 25:26I got to learned to run fast, honey. He had to take
- 25:30time to knock me out, and still he caught up with you, So
- 25:32did you. I'm very glad to say, even though you probably weren't trying
- 25:36to save me at the time, were you? Frankly, honey? Until
- 25:41Horton stepped back into that bungalow to keep me interfering with things, I figured
- 25:44you were, dy Marlowe. If Paul hadn't been killed just before I got
- 25:48to it, at least added hitting with something hard. I had motive,
- 25:52you know, Yeah, I read all about it. Three years in prison
- 25:56for something he didn't do. But tell me, if Niles fraened you and
- 26:00knew it, why didn't you go to the police. It couldn't have been
- 26:02that irresistible. But he was Marna and more. As a matter of fact,
- 26:10he didn't frame me in the first place. Oh my own idea.
- 26:11You see, Paul was driving the car when we we had that accident three
- 26:15years ago, not me, yes, which places or whatever? Why he
- 26:21already had his license revoked for reckless driving. They just sent him away for
- 26:25ten years at least, as against my three belly thatt or not. At
- 26:30the time, I couldn't think of waiting that long for him. No,
- 26:36no, mana, hello Matthews. We checked their story. It's sure enough,
- 26:40even if it's the kind of thing we're not supposed to be able to
- 26:41understand. Paul was strictly a lady killer, remember, Yes, so he
- 26:47was. Well, I guess that size everything in huh, I cried Phil.
- 26:49I just finished taking a staper from Horton. There's one more question.
- 26:53I never made you so sure that in a room half filled with a gas,
- 26:56a gun exploding would blow everything up. Oh well, let's simple.
- 27:00I I you what well, I figured you see, I thought that,
- 27:07yes, well, good night miss Kirby, good night mister Mars. So
- 27:11long lieutenants, a long lucky. By the time I got back to the
- 27:27quiet of my apartment on Franklin was a little better than two in the am.
- 27:33As I sunk into an easy chair without bothering to turn on the lights,
- 27:37I realized that at the moment, I was tired, tired of people,
- 27:41their troubles, the petty little jealousies, lady killer that makes one man
- 27:48a lady killer in another. Oh well, I little last cigarette, and
- 27:53I thought about the Martin of Trouble, a classic Grecian profile that built for
- 27:56Paul Niles. Stopped thinking when the player of the match in my hands showed
- 28:02a mirror opposite me, the mirror that also reflected the face of the guy
- 28:06holding the match. It was a long way from being in Adonis. In
- 28:12fact, he was slightly on the mud fence side, and at the moment
- 28:19glad of it. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe Bringing You Raymond, Chandler's most
- 28:42famous character and crime's most deadly enemy, starred Gerald Moore and are produced and
- 28:48directed by Norman McDonald. Script is by Meldon La Robert Mitchell and Gene Levitt.
- 28:53Feature in the cast were Gene Bates, Paul Dubob, Ted Von Elks
- 28:56and Morrison, Don Randolph and Edmund Donald. The special music is by Richard
- 29:02rand He shorn't be with us again next week, when Philip Barlow says,
- 29:11it started with a man on trial for his life and an a one citizen
- 29:15eager to testify. But there it was interrupted. And it wasn't until I
- 29:18found a copse in a bubbling bath, gun play in the woods, and
- 29:22lots of blackmail that the real ego witness had a chance to talk. It
- 29:40will be New Orleans, City of Romance and Drama, which sends its detectives
- 29:44into action on Gangbusters. Tonight, the Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department
- 29:48himself will narrate Gangbuster's amazing story, the Case of the Sledgehammer. Side,
- 29:53you'll also find Basil Rathbone engaged in another of his exciting exotic mysteries, so
- 29:59be sure to hear them on most of these same CBS stations. Gangbusters and
- 30:03Basil Rathbone's newest mystery adventure. In fact, stay tuned right now for the
- 30:07Gangbusters program. Yes, it follows immediately on most of these same stations.
- 30:11This is Roy Rowan speaking. There's the CBS to Columbia Broadcasting System, welcome
- 30:33back. I love the story, there were several It really felt, first
- 30:38of all, very authentically Marlowe from the books, with him turning down that
- 30:45client who wouldn't tell him everything. And I love the ending and how they
- 30:48brought them being in this gas field room to life. I always like it
- 30:53when the actors put the additional strain in, and they definitely made it seem
- 30:59real. Even the end. I have to admit that, just like the
- 31:03murderer, I would have been by Marlowe's warning about what would happen if the
- 31:08forty five were actually fired. Not only was Marlowe just so passionate that you
- 31:15had to believe him, but there seems to me to be a simple logic.
- 31:21If it's not a good idea the light of matching a room with a
- 31:25gas leak, how could it would it also not be a bad idea to
- 31:29discharge a forty five in a room that was filling up with gas. Now
- 31:33my logic could be wrong, and according to the story it is. But
- 31:37what marlow said did seem to make sense. If any of our experts out
- 31:42there have information on the effects of firing a forty five under the circumstances described
- 31:52in the story, I would love to hear from you, because I thought
- 31:55it was a fascinating and really sort of unique. Again, but to end
- 31:57the show on, I hope you enjoyed this episode as much as I did.
