• 0:55

• 0:59
Speaker 1: But he is listening A couple of years ago at this time, I was up there with him and thoroughly enjoyed my time.
• 1:04
Speaker 1: I'd never been there.
• 1:05
Speaker 1: What an absolutely gorgeous place in the summertime that is.
• 1:10
Speaker 1: That was August Said.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: The high was going to be 73 today.
• 1:12
Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks for rubbing it in, dave.
• 1:17
Speaker 1: Rudy Samsel is with Guys with Rides.
• 1:21
Speaker 1: This company wanted to create the only online dealer-free community that provides a truly unique experience a place to go for people to discover new cars, connect with like-minded collectible car enthusiasts and share their stories about the cars that they love.
• 1:39
Speaker 1: Well, that sounds like the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show.
• 1:42
Speaker 1: It's a marriage made in heaven, rudy.
• 1:44
Speaker 1: Very good, thank you.
• 1:47
Speaker 1: I think so too.
• 1:48
Speaker 1: All right, so I got the description.
• 1:51
Speaker 1: Now bring it down to our terms, your terms, our terms, that we could all understand.
• 1:56
Speaker 1: So why am I going to go to Guys With Rides?
• 2:00
Speaker 3: So I decided to create the.
• 2:02
Speaker 3: After my experiences at traditional intent auctions and online ones, particularly Bring a Trailer I quickly discovered that you're not on a level playing field if you're bidding on a car, and so my goal here was to create a dealer-free environment.
• 2:21
Speaker 3: That doesn't mean I'm not anti-dealer In fact, I support them with the variety of parts I buy but if you own a classic or collector car that's been a family air room in particular you want to find a good home for that car, and so I wanted to create a level playing field where private buyers and sellers could be a matchmaker for them on an online site.
• 2:50
Speaker 1: How is it different than?
• 2:51
  Speaker 3: Hemings.
• 2:52
Speaker 3: So Hemings does have a variety of dealer auctions on there and classifieds as well.
• 3:04
Speaker 3: So, besides that we have a community of, so, besides that the prices are also a lot less because we don't have the overhead that, say, a big Hemings does.
• 3:17
Speaker 3: And what I'm trying to do is be the next step up, say, from putting your car on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.
• 3:27
Speaker 3: If you want to, particularly if you have a very rare car, if you're in a remote area, you can get more eyeballs on the car and get the car sold nationally, if not internationally.
• 3:41
Speaker 3: So a couple of years ago I had a 76 Cadillac pickup.
• 3:46
Speaker 3: If you remember those, there were only 200 built and through my search engine optimization techniques, a gentleman in Bern, Switzerland, actually ended up buying that car and taking it to Switzerland.
• 3:58
Speaker 3: I don't know how he got around the streets, but that's the kind of service.
• 4:04
Speaker 1: we offer Big snow tires, I'm sure.
• 4:07
Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure yeah.
• 4:09
Speaker 1: Well, an interesting concept.
• 4:11
Speaker 1: So how many cars do you have on the site right now?
• 4:18
Speaker 3: So right now I just sold.
• 4:19
Speaker 3: Last week I only had one I like to call myself the David in an industry of Goliaths and so I had one and next week I have a gentleman that has six motorcycles interesting motorcycles, but typically, on a given week or so, I might have only two or three.
• 4:35
Speaker 3: I will point out one thing when Bring a Trailer started in 2014 doing auctions, they were only doing three a week, so small is good, go ahead.
• 4:46
  Speaker 2: Do you?
• 4:47
Speaker 2: Is yours like an auction or is it truly?
• 4:50
  Speaker 2: I've got a car here.
• 4:52
Speaker 2: I inherited this car from my dad and I want to sell it to somebody that's going to love it just as much as he did.
• 4:58
Speaker 1: And I'm going to sell it for $20,000, and I'm firm on that.
• 5:01
Speaker 1: Do you do that?
• 5:03
Speaker 3: I offer two options.
• 5:04
Speaker 3: So that example you just gave.
• 5:06
Speaker 3: I had a 62 Thunderbird cross town here and the daughters of the deceased owner asked for my help.
• 5:14
Speaker 3: So I said in that situation that they're selling his house and they need to get rid of the car or find a new home for it.
• 5:23
Speaker 3: They really wanted to find something because he loved that car.
• 5:25
Speaker 3: So we set it up.
• 5:26
Speaker 3: I said let's start a no reserve auction, but we're going to start the bidding at $3,900.
• 5:32
Speaker 3: And we'll also offer it at a buy it now option of $6,000, depending on.
• 5:38
  Speaker 3: It's a very nice 62 Thunderbird.
• 5:40
Speaker 3: However, it's been sitting for about five or six years.
• 5:43
Speaker 3: You can actually watch my YouTube channel and see how I got the car restarted and have it running again.
• 5:49
Speaker 3: But so ultimately, what happened is they agreed to that Bidding started at $3,900.
• 5:55
Speaker 3: And then last on Thursday, the car sold for $4,600.
• 6:00
Speaker 3: Now, conversely, I have another gentleman to the dollars.
• 6:09
Speaker 3: Now, conversely, I have another gentleman to the uh, he has a 1984 ford mustang svo 14 000 miles and he's firm on the price.
• 6:13
Speaker 3: He's asking 19.5 for the car and so we have the buy now buy it now or make an offer listing.
• 6:21
Speaker 3: So we're waiting for some offers to come in on that and see where it goes and they can decide whether to stay firm on the 19.5 or accept if it's a reasonable counteroffer.
• 6:33
Speaker 1: All the cars that you're selling on your site.
• 6:36
Speaker 1: Are they all classics or antiques?
• 6:39
Speaker 1: Or can you sell Jeff's Buick Envision 2025 model?
• 6:45
  Speaker 3: I haven't gone that new.
• 6:46
  Speaker 3: I generally it's been.
• 6:49
Speaker 3: I think the newest I've had is recently had a 2014 Porsche 911.
• 6:54
  Speaker 3: And a couple of years ago I had a 2012 Porsche Rolls-Royce.
• 7:00
Speaker 3: I'm not averse to anything relatively new.
• 7:05
Speaker 3: It depends on the car.
• 7:08
Speaker 1: So the Rolls-Royce did you insist that you take it for a test drive so you could figure out exactly what it was really?
• 7:14
Speaker 3: all about yeah, no, I rode in the car you did ride.
• 7:21
Speaker 5: Okay, see, I knew there was something.
• 7:24
Speaker 5: He rode in the back.
• 7:25
Speaker 5: He rode in the back.
• 7:27
Speaker 3: That's what I had, to make sure everything was quiet.
• 7:30
  Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah exactly.
• 7:33
Speaker 4: Research, research Did you take any Grey Poupon with you?
• 7:35
  Speaker 4: No, sir.
• 7:38
Speaker 3: Yeah, that was already in the glove box.
• 7:40
Speaker 3: All right, you got to do it right.
• 7:42
Speaker 3: Funny story about that car, though.
• 7:44
Speaker 3: Funny story about that car, though.
• 7:45
Speaker 3: The gentleman was handicapped and he had one of those I forget what those knobs are called that you might put on a normal tractor.
• 7:54
Speaker 1: There's many words for them.
• 7:55
Speaker 3: And he had that taken off after the sale and it ended up not selling on my site.
• 8:02
Speaker 3: It went to a competitive site and he took that off and the next buyer was not happy with the indent it made and the steering wheel for that car.
• 8:13
Speaker 3: Just the part was, I think, $7,000.
• 8:15
  Speaker 3: Poof.
• 8:17
Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I think I'd have to take it down to the upholstery shop.
• 8:19
  Speaker 1: $1.98 balling.
• 8:22
  Speaker 4: That's right, yeah, $1.98.
• 8:24
  Speaker 3: Bali.
• 8:25
  Speaker 3: That's right.
• 8:25
Speaker 3: Yeah, so the key thing here is it's $1 to list and then you pay for a seller and they only pay $49 more if the car sells, conversely a buyer when they buy the car.
• 8:46
Speaker 3: So the gentleman the other day that purchased the Thunderbird for $4,600 only charged 1%.
• 8:49
  Speaker 3: So $46 on the $4,600.
• 8:51
Speaker 3: And I capped that at $500.
• 8:54
Speaker 3: So, compared to the traditional tent auctions or even the online auctions, I believe I offer the lowest fares in the industry currently.
• 9:09
Speaker 3: So you're kind of like a very personalized concierge as far as the seller goes, kind of thing, that's great.
• 9:15
Speaker 3: I use white glove, but absolutely yes.
• 9:18
Speaker 2: So I understand that and I think it's great, because I know there's a lot of people that do inherit vehicles and they're not sure what to do with them, but they just don't want to turn them loose to just anybody.
• 9:28
Speaker 2: What about as I'm a buyer?
• 9:31
Speaker 2: Do you do any of that kind of services?
• 9:34
Speaker 2: I'm looking for a particular kind of car.
• 9:36
  Speaker 3: I do.
• 9:37
Speaker 3: I get calls from time to time and I do offer that.
• 9:40
Speaker 3: I haven't monetized that in any way, I just do it as a nice service.
• 9:47
Speaker 3: I will be candid about that.
• 9:48
Speaker 3: I'll get a call from somebody and they'll ask hey, I'm looking for this car, and so for my YouTube channel and the website, six days a week, I do a daily theme, like today was Sports Car Saturday, and I challenged myself to find seven vehicles under $15,000 that I would personally want in my garage, and so that often motivates people to reach out and say, hey, I'm looking for this car, and more often than not, when I do find it a couple of months later, they're like oh yeah, my circumstances have changed and I really can't, you know, do the car?
• 10:26
Speaker 2: right, so spare of the moment type thing.
• 10:28
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah oh well, very interesting.
• 10:32
Speaker 1: Um, so you got one on there today and um, they're looking for more, apparently, and I guess this is a.
• 10:39
Speaker 1: This is a nationwide deal, correct?
• 10:42
  Speaker 3: it is.
• 10:42
Speaker 3: I've and I have had a couple of cars from canada.
• 10:45
Speaker 3: A couple years ago I had a volkswagen beetle out of uh winnipeg and the gentleman restored and he wasn't getting any eyeballs on the car there.
• 10:54
Speaker 1: Put it on the site and because nobody lives there you know, anybody that lives in winnipeg I know they got a hockey team, that's about right and if they do?
• 11:03
Speaker 2: they don't want to drive.
• 11:04
  Speaker 4: Volkswagen Exactly.
• 11:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, I had to laugh at it because, coming from western New York and having a Volkswagen Beetle in college, I can't even imagine you get frostbite on your feet driving that thing around.
• 11:20
Speaker 1: People don't understand the weather in Canada because I mean, it's Canada and it gets cold up there and all I can think of is that Canadian highway.
• 11:32
Speaker 1: They do all those trucker shows and the wrecks and stuff on there and the snow going this way as opposed to straight down in a beautiful background.
• 11:40
Speaker 1: No, it's a highway that's come to a complete stop for hours on end.
• 11:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I'm all good about that where are you located, rudy?
• 11:49
Speaker 3: so I am in uh, flemington, new jersey, and that's are you from jersey?
• 11:55
Speaker 4: I'm from jersey too I'm from buffalo from buffalo.
• 11:59
Speaker 3: He was quick to correct that, yeah, exactly.
• 12:01
Speaker 3: But uh, if you're not familiar with you know everybody hears jersey and they think of Tony Soprano.
• 12:06
  Speaker 2: Exactly.
• 12:07
Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's known as the Garden State, that's right.
• 12:11
Speaker 3: And I'm in Hunterdon County.
• 12:12
Speaker 3: So where I'm standing right now, times Square is 52 miles that way and the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is 54 miles that way.
• 12:21
Speaker 3: So I'm out in the country.
• 12:22
Speaker 3: I'm about eight miles from the Delaware River, miles that way.
• 12:24
Speaker 3: So I'm out in the country, I'm about eight miles from the Delaware River and people don't realize it, but this even I didn't when I moved down here 15 years ago.
• 12:30
Speaker 3: This area of the country, arguably, the car culture is as strong as California, it's just that our season is much shorter.
• 12:40
Speaker 3: I could go to any cars and coffee around here, whether I go towards New York or Bucks County, and I will see anything you can imagine.
• 12:49
Speaker 3: I will see that.
• 12:51
Speaker 3: You know I had never seen an Alfa Romeo Montreal, if you remember one of those.
• 12:55
Speaker 3: A guy brought that out one day.
• 12:56
Speaker 3: Of course you see a cadre of Lamborghinis and Ferraris.
• 13:01
Speaker 3: So it's a very rich culture and and I've just been amazed with it.
• 13:07
Speaker 1: Well, uh, we uh had a friend that uh actually uh was from long island, did some drag racing there back at the beginning of the drag racing era and uh, he speaks very highly of the car culture up there.
• 13:19
Speaker 1: And you know we're down here, we're in houston, texas.
• 13:22
Speaker 1: Who would have ever thunk in a million years that we've got a car culture?
• 13:25
Speaker 1: And you know we're talking about horses and guns down here Cowboys, yeah, cowboys.
• 13:31
Speaker 1: No, it's not that way.
• 13:33
Speaker 1: But yes, I found that the car culture is very rich all across the United States when I did the drag racing thing and I can tell you it's alive and well.
• 13:44
Speaker 1: Well, we wish you the best of luck with your website and your venture here, and it's great talking to you and learning about your website, guyswithridescom, correct.

• 17:49
Speaker 1: Alright, Mr Barr, it's time now for this Week in Auto History.

• 18:12
Speaker 2: Now, this also led to the famous slogan the best car in the world.
• 18:17
Speaker 2: A magazine, a journalist, dubbed it.
• 18:19
Speaker 2: That after watching it and how it performed in this event.
• 18:22
Speaker 2: Then, in 1910, alice Ramsey crosses America.
• 18:26
Speaker 2: She completed a 3,800-mile journey from New York to San Francisco, becoming the first woman to drive coast-to-coast across the US.
• 18:34
Speaker 2: Now, it took her 59 days to make this drive and she endured mechanical breakdowns on paved roads, weather challenges, but anyway, this served to challenge other women to get involved and in 2000, finally, in 2000, she was honored by the Automotive Hall of Fame for her achievement.
• 18:51
Speaker 2: Well, she's got a nice jacket on.
• 18:53
Speaker 2: I'll tell you that.
• 18:54
  Speaker 2: I'm telling you it's a little toasty.
