- Lucas: Ciao Luna! Ready for a new Italian episode with Fexingo? Luna: Ciao Lucas! I'm ready. Last time we described flowers at the park. Today, let's actually buy some! Lucas: Exactly. We're going to a virtual fioraio — a flower shop. Let's start with the first phrase you need at the door. Luna: Okay. I'm walking in. What do I say? Lucas: You walk up to the seller and say: Buongiorno, vorrei un mazzo di fiori. Luna: Buongiorno, vorrei un mazzo di fiori. Does that mean 'Good morning, I'd like a bouquet of flowers'? Lucas: That's it. Vorrei is 'I would like' — very polite. And mazzo means bouquet. Say it with me slowly. Luna: Buongiorno, vorrei un mazzo di fiori. Lucas: Perfect. Now the seller will ask: Per chi è il mazzo? — 'Who is the bouquet for?' Luna: Per chi è il mazzo? Lucas: Right. Per chi means 'for whom'. So you can answer: È per un compleanno. — 'It's for a birthday.' Luna: È per un compleanno. So if I'm buying for a birthday, I say that. Lucas: Yes. Or you could say 'È per un anniversario' — for an anniversary, 'È per un matrimonio' — for a wedding. But let's stick with compleanno for now. Luna: Got it. Then the seller shows me some flowers. How do I compliment them? Lucas: You can say: Queste rose sono bellissime. — 'These roses are beautiful.' Luna: Queste rose sono bellissime. That sounds lovely. So rose is roses, and bellissime means very beautiful. Lucas: Exactly. Now you decide, and you say: Prendo queste. — 'I'll take these.' Luna: Prendo queste. Simple. And finally I pay and leave: Grazie, arrivederci. Lucas: Perfect. Grazie, arrivederci. Exactly. Let's hear the whole conversation once. Luna: Buongiorno, vorrei un mazzo di fiori. Lucas: Per chi è il mazzo? Luna: È per un compleanno. Lucas: Queste rose sono bellissime. Luna: Prendo queste. Lucas: Grazie, arrivederci. Luna: That was smooth. I can already imagine walking into a real fioraio in Rome. Lucas: Right? And if Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Italian, you might consider supporting the show. Luna: Yeah, a little support goes a long way in keeping these lessons coming. Lucas: If you'd like to help, you can do so at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That's buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Every bit helps, and we really appreciate it. Now back to flowers — what if I want to buy tulips instead of roses? Lucas: Then you'd say: Prendo questi tulipani. Tulipani is masculine, so it's questi. But if you're not sure, just point and say 'Prendo questi.' Works every time. Luna: Good tip. Let's practice the whole dialogue one more time. I'll start. Lucas: Okay, go ahead. Luna: Buongiorno, vorrei un mazzo di fiori. Lucas: Per chi è il mazzo? Luna: È per un compleanno. Lucas: Queste rose sono bellissime. Luna: Prendo queste. Grazie, arrivederci! Lucas: Perfect! Now you're ready to buy flowers in Italian.
