- 0:47Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:51culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:54media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:58through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 1:01the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 1:06Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 1:08Let's just get right into the stories for today.
- 1:12So the first story that I have for you guys is that Gen.
- 1:15Z publisher Centennial World is launching their podcast network.
- 1:21Today it was announced that Gen. Z digital media brand Centennial
- 1:25World is launching a podcast network with their first spinoff
- 1:30podcast, High Stakes. Have you caught on yet?
- 1:34I was going to just tell you guys about this at the top of
- 1:36the episode. And then I was like, you know
- 1:37what? Why don't I make this an
- 1:39official story. This has been OK.
- 1:41Let me get into what High Stakes is, what's going on, and then
- 1:44I'll tell you guys about this journey.
- 1:45So High Stakes will be the first sister podcast to join our
- 1:49network. It will be exploring the famous
- 1:51feuds, frenemies and falling out that have shaped celebrity and
- 1:55Internet culture. The podcast will be Co hosted by
- 1:58two media girlies here in Sydney, Entertainment editor
- 2:02Laura Mazia and lifestyle writer Maddie Bogish.
- 2:06OK you guys, this expansion of Centennial, having a network and
- 2:13bringing on other podcasts that are not hosted specifically by
- 2:17like myself or my team. This has been almost 2 full
- 2:20years in the making. In business, I'm such a doer.
- 2:23Like I'm a fast decision maker and once I've made that
- 2:25decision, I literally go like that and it's done.
- 2:28I've made the decision and we act on it.
- 2:31This has been quite the journey, partly out of our control, but
- 2:35also partly like I needed to do this right.
- 2:39Like I needed to make sure that if we were going to expand
- 2:42Centennial and actually build out like a network of podcasts,
- 2:45it needed to be the right host, the right type of podcast, the
- 2:49right timing, the right sponsor, like the right everything.
- 2:52We're independent media. We have very limited funding.
- 2:56Like I don't have time, money, energy, resources to waste on
- 3:01something that flops. So I needed to do this right And
- 3:05high stakes for Centennial. It will fill that gap of like a
- 3:09chatty pop culture podcast that I know a lot of you guys miss
- 3:13since Jordy left. So I'm really, really excited
- 3:18for you guys to hear these episodes.
- 3:20The 1st 2:00 will be premiering on March 27th and the first
- 3:25episode, maybe the second, maybe we'll put both launch episodes.
- 3:27I'm not totally sure. We'll be on our RSS feed.
- 3:30So we'll be on infinite scroll, but high stakes.
- 3:33They have a trailer up. They have you know, like
- 3:35everything. You can subscribe to them and
- 3:36stuff now. So go subscribe to them on
- 3:39Spotify and on Apple. And I think we may turn this
- 3:43YouTube channel for the YouTube viewers.
- 3:45We may turn it into the Centennial World Network.
- 3:48And then we will have different playlist for like mini scroll,
- 3:51infinite scroll, mini tech, maybe even.
- 3:54And then and we will put high stakes as well because I think
- 3:56we will put every high stakes episode on this YouTube channel.
- 4:00So yes, that is the plan for now, but I'm really excited.
- 4:03And yeah, like I said, it's been almost two years in the making.
- 4:07Our launch partner is Tempest 1. So please give them some love in
- 4:11the comments so we can share this with them.
- 4:13They sponsored our launch event that we are having at the end of
- 4:16March and they sponsored the 1st 2 launch episodes.
- 4:19So we're so excited because honestly, we could not, we could
- 4:21not do this without them. And on that note, I have another
- 4:24very exciting announcement because Speaking of our launch
- 4:27event, we are going to have spots available for our
- 4:31listeners here in Sydney. So we are doing our launch event
- 4:34on March 27th in the Sydney CBD after work.
- 4:38So if you guys want to come, there will be a form down below
- 4:42in the description. Please fill it out.
- 4:44Let us know that you're interested that you would be
- 4:47available to attend. We probably can't invite
- 4:50everyone based on demand. We'll see.
- 4:52So if there's too many people that apply that say they want to
- 4:55come, we will just like use a random generator selector thing
- 4:59to choose who comes because obviously like we want it to be
- 5:01fair. So yes, put down below if you
- 5:04guys want to come, you know, the whole team will all be there.
- 5:07It'll be like a party. They'll be drinks, obviously,
- 5:09Tempest one, they'll be food. It'll be our clients, publicist,
- 5:14journalists, listeners. And you know, you guys will get
- 5:17to meet the team, get to meet Laura and Maddie and yeah, just
- 5:20celebrate with us this huge milestone.
- 5:22We always want to give back to the listeners if we can.
- 5:25All right, the next story that I have for you guys, this is an
- 5:27entire like women in Business episode.
- 5:30Just to let you guys know, it's so random, but also very
- 5:32appropriate for our like female founder International Women's
- 5:36Day saga, like ending the week with a full women in Business
- 5:40episode. So Michaela Naguera has launched
- 5:43a skin care brand or is about to launch a skin care brand called
- 5:47Point of View Beauty. TikTok creator Michaela Naguera
- 5:51has been teasing a big announcement for some time now,
- 5:54and she's officially revealed what it is a skin care brand
- 5:57called POV Point of View Beauty. The last two years have all LED
- 6:01up to this. I can't believe it's finally
- 6:04here. My whole life, my whole world is
- 6:07about to change and I'm terrified if I'm honest.
- 6:11But the last five years as a content creator, I kept asking
- 6:15myself, what's next for me? You know, what is my legacy?
- 6:19And now I know the answer. The brand will launch with a
- 6:21full routine that basically goes under makeup, like that's how
- 6:25they're marketing it. So it will have a serum, a
- 6:28hydrating priming milk, a barrier boosting moisturizer, a
- 6:33primer and a lip treatment. I have a few opinions.
- 6:36The 1st is that the promo for POV, I understand that the whole
- 6:39thing is like this is supposed to go under your makeup and
- 6:41that's kind of why they're Mark or how they're marketing this
- 6:45skin care line like quote UN quote like differently.
- 6:48But I am confused because in the promo, Michaela has a full face
- 6:53of makeup. And I know that's kind of the
- 6:55point. But also I think for me, like I
- 6:58want my skin care advertisements to be makeup free or like I know
- 7:03it's never actually makeup free, but I want it to look makeup
- 7:05free. I want to see how hydrating and
- 7:08beautiful your products actually are.
- 7:10And then you can do a video where you're using them and then
- 7:13putting on a full face. So I thought that was kind of
- 7:15like a weird decision that she's in like a full glam for the
- 7:20promo. That being said, I'm surprised
- 7:22that she didn't launch a makeup line.
- 7:24Like I think a lot of people are surprised she didn't go into
- 7:26color cosmetics. I think she will.
- 7:28I don't think that this is obviously the last thing that
- 7:31POV is going to launch her point of view.
- 7:33I'm not sure if they're going by POV or point of view.
- 7:35But anyways, of course they're going to end up launching other
- 7:37stuff and I'm sure makeup will be part of that.
- 7:39And I think it makes sense that she's launching a brand like
- 7:42what is next? You know, she said that in the
- 7:44promo. She's like, I've been thinking
- 7:45about what's next. Like she is literally the
- 7:47biggest beauty TikTok creator. Like she's she's done at all,
- 7:50like she's collapsed with every single brand she's done probably
- 7:53every type of partnership you can do like what is next?
- 7:56So I understand the desire to kind of like spread your wings
- 8:00and do something else. Do we need another influencer
- 8:03brand? No Am I going to like shit on
- 8:07someone trying to build something for themselves?
- 8:09Also no. But of course, it would not be
- 8:13an influencer brand launch without some unfortunate drama.
- 8:17So there actually is another independent beauty brand named
- 8:22POV and the founder spoke out on Instagram stories.
- 8:26So this was in French. I guess The brand is based in
- 8:29Canada. So I actually do speak French
- 8:32because I am Canadian Queen, but I translated it for you guys and
- 8:36I don't speak French well anymore, although I did all of
- 8:39my elementary school in French. That is a fun fact about me, but
- 8:42it really is true. Like you don't use it, you lose
- 8:44it. So anyways, OK, this is what the
- 8:47story said. Betrayed, sad, angry, humiliated
- 8:50and heartbroken. This is how I feel right now
- 8:53about Michaela's brand launch. I feel like my legs have just
- 8:56been sawn off, like my greatest pride has been stolen.
- 8:59I don't have the words to describe how helpless I am.
- 9:02It's been almost a year since the brand was created.
- 9:04And to see that someone took your name, your concept, when
- 9:06you have invested all your savings and your passion and
- 9:10much more, I don't know how to react or what to do right now.
- 9:12It saddens me to an unimaginable extent.
- 9:15How can we do this to a small queer Quebec business that
- 9:18doesn't even have the means to defend anything?
- 9:21And then they tagged Michaela and POV, you know, a big, I, I
- 9:25know a lot of people when stuff like this happens, they're
- 9:28either on the side of like, you know, that influencer is trash
- 9:31and like, how could they do that to a little guy?
- 9:33Or they're on the side of like, well, if you didn't trademark
- 9:36it, like that's just business. The thing with trademarks is
- 9:38like they're so incredibly expensive.
- 9:40And you obviously when you're starting a business, like you
- 9:44just kind of have to start and see if it's going to work at
- 9:48that customer base, kind of get that proof of concept.
- 9:51You know, it doesn't make sense to file trademarks if you don't
- 9:53have a lot of money. I know a lot of celebrities and
- 9:56stuff do that first, but like it doesn't make sense to file
- 9:58trademarks, especially maybe I mean, I don't know, I've never
- 10:02built like a product based business like this.
- 10:04But I'm assuming like unless you have something that is like
- 10:06really unique or you're building like tech or something, you
- 10:09know, I, I don't think most people launch with trademarks
- 10:13already. So that is kind of where things
- 10:16go wrong. Also, I think maybe being in
- 10:17Canada versus Michaela being in the US might be a little bit
- 10:21different as well. How many times have we seen
- 10:23this? And I understand, OK, this is
- 10:25actually going to sound crazy, but we Jordan Crystal, like, you
- 10:29know, Crystal from Z feed, who I talk about and myself, we used
- 10:32to have a three-way consulting partnership.
- 10:35So we like Centennial still does Gen.
- 10:37Z consulting for brands, but we used to have one, the three of
- 10:41us together and it was called POV insights.
- 10:44Like it's not that POV is necessarily so unique.
- 10:48I mean, but this is literally a brand called POV Beauty, which
- 10:52is like what they launched and they launched, as this person
- 10:55says, only a year ago. And when you have a giant team
- 10:59behind you and you're like a public figure, first of all, you
- 11:02probably do know about these brands because you would have
- 11:05people looking into it and looking into the trade marking
- 11:08and stuff because you would have the means to do that.
- 11:10But also when it comes to influencers and celebrities, I
- 11:13think it's kind of how we say, like, you know, you might not
- 11:16ask to be a role model, but like, that is one of the things
- 11:19that comes with all the privileges that you get of
- 11:22being, you know, wealthy and famous and like, whatever.
- 11:26And I kind of see it similar to that with influencer brands.
- 11:31It's like, sure, maybe it's legal, you know, maybe that is
- 11:35just typically how you do business.
- 11:37But because you are already an influencer, you are already in
- 11:41such a privileged position. I just think we do need to hold
- 11:45them or we should be holding them to a slightly different
- 11:47standard. Then if this was just like if
- 11:50POV beauty, like Michaela's brand was some random beauty
- 11:54brand that launched in the US and whether they took off or not
- 11:57isn't really the point. If it was like an anonymous like
- 11:59makeup lover make bars, whoever that launched the brand.
- 12:02I think it's really different when there's like this huge
- 12:04power, power dynamic. And I think because of the
- 12:06privileges that some of these people hold, they should be held
- 12:10to a different standard, I think.
- 12:14OK. And the last story that I have
- 12:15for you guys, like I said, women in business, Alex Earl has
- 12:19partnered with an alcohol brand as an investor and I think the
- 12:23face of it. So Alex Earl has partnered with
- 12:26Sitmargs, a sparkling canned cocktail.
- 12:28I wanted to cover this because there is a lot of confusion.
- 12:31A lot of people think that she launched this brand herself.
- 12:35She did not. This brand already existed.
- 12:37And they raised a lot of money in December.
- 12:39And then she came on recently as part of that round, I guess, of
- 12:43raising money. And so she's an investor.
- 12:45And she is also, I believe, the face.
- 12:47I'm not sure of like full stop. But she is definitely the face
- 12:50of like their latest campaign. This is from Miami, New Times
- 12:54quote Earls investment and partnership also marked the
- 12:57first official endeavor into the celebrity backed spirit space,
- 13:00and she's ready to dive right in.
- 13:02Being involved in the alcohol space is something that has
- 13:04always interested me, but it was all about finding the right fit,
- 13:07says Earl. I knew from the second I took a
- 13:09sip, pun intended, that I wanted to get involved.
- 13:12There may have been larger, more established companies looking to
- 13:15collaborate, but pushing myself to take risks and invest in a
- 13:19startup that I believe in, it felt like a great next step to
- 13:21accelerate me in my entrepreneurial efforts.
- 13:24When I commit to something, I give it my 110% effort and
- 13:28trust. So I'm just very excited to get
- 13:30everyone trying SIP marks. There's actually this TikTok
- 13:34going around. It's getting quite a lot of
- 13:35views of one of the girls that was in the campaign with Alex.
- 13:38And she was like, I've literally never modelled before.
- 13:41Alex just posted something like, if you're going to be available
- 13:44in Miami on Monday and Tuesday and you want to be part of like
- 13:47this campaign, you know, put your e-mail here.
- 13:49And so she said her friend was like, you should put your e-mail
- 13:52here, you know? And so this was like on a
- 13:54Saturday, I think. And so the shoot was like a day
- 13:56or two later. So she put her e-mail in and she
- 13:58got chosen. And then she saw who was on the
- 14:00run sheet and all the girls, she looked at them up and they were
- 14:02all like real models. And she was like, what the hell?
- 14:05But yeah. And she was just talking about
- 14:07how she just got, like, plucked out of, I'm sure, like,
- 14:09hundreds, if not thousands of submissions.
- 14:12And they chose her. She's never bottled before.
- 14:15And she was just talking about how she had the best time.
- 14:17So yeah, it was a really sweet video.
- 14:19But the other thing I wanted to talk about related to Alex Earl
- 14:22right now is that her stylist has been facing some criticism
- 14:26for, like, dressing her so poorly lately.
- 14:29So Alex has been working with a new stylist named Daniel Brown
- 14:33and PEOPLE are not loving their looks together.
- 14:38They did the Super Bowl look together.
- 14:41That like leather moment. And everyone was like, that was
- 14:43just so not the Super Bowl. Like, why would he put her in
- 14:46that? And then for Paris Fashion Week,
- 14:49she was wearing this like mew mew outfit.
- 14:52And there were socks and heels and the outfit was very mew mew.
- 14:56But like, I think where it hits like where the skirt hit on her
- 15:01legs combined with how high the socks were, like it just didn't
- 15:06flatter her like at all. And not in like a high fashion
- 15:08way. Like it really just like didn't
- 15:10like it. I don't know.
- 15:11I thought it was really ugly. But what I will say is people
- 15:15are like going inside and I'm like, it's really not that
- 15:16serious. And I like that.
- 15:19Like they're trying something new.
- 15:20I like that Alex is willing to like take chances.
- 15:24And I like that they're taking chances.
- 15:27I like that they're trying to be creative.
- 15:28I think when you're doing different things, then what you
- 15:33know is going to look good, like sometimes you're just going to
- 15:34have some misses. And I think we just see so many
- 15:38influencers just lean into that like clean girl, like similar
- 15:41aesthetic. I mean, it's literally what we
- 15:43were talking about the New York City influencers.
- 15:45Like not, I'm not speaking about them specifically, but like in
- 15:48general, I think fashion has become so monotonous and
- 15:53everybody just wears the same thing.
- 15:55Everybody looks for the same silhouettes.
- 15:56Like every brand is selling the same stuff.
- 15:58Oh my God that reminds me, I was going to talk about the
- 16:01PrettyLittleThing rebrand. I don't have it in my notes, but
- 16:04I'm sure you guys have seen that PrettyLittleThing has rebranded
- 16:07from like thoughty Instagram club outfits to like this faux
- 16:14old money trad wife aesthetic vibe.
- 16:17It's very bizarre and everybody's doing think pieces
- 16:19on it. So I don't have anything ready
- 16:21to talk about with that. But that just reminded me like
- 16:24everybody just dresses the same. Every company makes the same
- 16:27shit. And yeah, I like that they're at
- 16:29least trying different stuff, even if it doesn't always feel
- 16:32like it hits. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 16:34Mini Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 16:37I love you guys so much. Please rate, review and
- 16:40subscribe. Please subscribe to High Stakes.
- 16:42You can find them on Spotify and on Apple.
- 16:45I'm so excited to like finally announce that for you guys.
- 16:49And like I said, if you will be in Sydney on March 27th in the
- 16:53evening after work, go down to the forum.
- 16:56Let us know if you want to come to our podcast network launch
- 17:00event. I love you guys.
- 17:01I'll talk to you on Monday and there will be a deep dive
- 17:04tomorrow. OK, bye.
