Transcript
- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comic books
- 0:12Tyler Johnson: I seem to be here ongoing now. I'm Tyler.
- 0:16Tad Eggleston: Yay!
- 0:18Tyler Johnson: We'll see, we'll see how my…
- 0:20Phil: The universe is finally healing?
- 0:23Tad Eggleston: I mean, you, you haven't gotten to the point where you're, where you're confident making your amazing books or spectacular books picks.
- 0:32Tyler Johnson: Oh, I haven't been reading, I can't…
- 0:34Tad Eggleston: That's my point.
- 0:35Tyler Johnson: So I can't. I thought about it this week, I'm like, what? Then I looked at… I'm like, nope.
- 0:42Phil: Time to… time to start judging books by the time.
- 0:44Phil: I think is…
- 0:45Tad Eggleston: As I had hoped to, but at least the ones I got read were really fun.
- 0:50Tyler Johnson: Oh, man. But anyway, across the interwebs…
- 0:53Tyler Johnson: from me are Tad and Phil. You both just got hit with my sticky web.
- 0:59Phil: Oh no!
- 1:00Tyler Johnson: That's true.
- 1:01Phil: Running away this time.
- 1:03Tyler Johnson: There's no getting away from my stickiness.
- 1:06Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna lead off this episode by, by, by actually talking about what our,
- 1:13Tad Eggleston: our great responsibility will be, because we have to do the John Lees thing.
- 1:18Tad Eggleston: We're actually gonna talk about a book that came out this week, Assorted Crisis Events Number 8. So, you are entering the spoiler Zone. If you have not read Assorted Crisis Events No. 8,
- 1:34Tad Eggleston: and you do not want anything spoiled, please pause the podcast, purchase the book, read the book, and come back and join us.
- 1:44Tad Eggleston: You do not have to have read Assorted Crisis Events 1 through 7 to be able to read number 8 and enjoy it thoroughly, though I absolutely recommend reading Assorted Crisis Events, numbers 1 through 7. Numbers 1 through 6 are available in trade paperback form at your local comic shop, at the Nexus Vault in La Verne, Minnesota, at Modern Age Comics.
- 2:08Tad Eggleston: In Algonquin, Illinois.
- 2:10Tad Eggleston: at least I hope they're in stock, and if they're not.
- 2:13Tyler Johnson: Yes. At my story, yes.
- 2:16Tad Eggleston: You bug the guy at the register, and you say, order more fucking copies of this. Yeah. And you can tell the guy at the register that I.
- 2:24Tyler Johnson: gave you permission to swear. Anyway, back to Tyler.
- 2:29Tyler Johnson: Okay, guys, it is, you know, kind of hit or miss on when I can make it, based on, you know, my availability, but the last few weeks have seemed to work out.
- 2:40Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 2:41Tad Eggleston: The only bad thing is, Ted.
- 2:43Tyler Johnson: I'm not… I'm not reading like I used to. I read when I can now.
- 2:48Tad Eggleston: I mean, we'll get you there.
- 2:50Phil: Yeah.
- 2:52Tyler Johnson: Eventually, you'll realize that reading is part of your job, so you…
- 2:57Phil: Trying, yeah. I miss the days when reading was part of my job.
- 3:00Tad Eggleston: what I meant was, specifically.
- 3:04Tad Eggleston: rather than always looking for a task to do when you don't have a customer in front of you, you will realize that sitting and reading a comic book IS a task.
- 3:14Tyler Johnson: I, yeah, I started coming to that realization a couple weeks ago, going, I just need to, like, you know, before I unlock the door, read, you know, whatever.
- 3:24Tad Eggleston: Or even after you unlock the door, you know? I mean, how many customers do you have between…
- 3:31Tyler Johnson: Okay, so I'm open from 3 to 6… or 3 to 8, mostly.
- 3:34Tad Eggleston: Oh, so you're not even open until the evening. That… that… that dramatically changes it, yes, okay.
- 3:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah, because I'm working during the day. I was thinking, I was thinking, how many customers do you have between 10 a.m. and 2 on Tuesday?
- 3:49Tyler Johnson: Yep, no, because…
- 3:51Tad Eggleston: There's none, because you're not open yet.
- 3:54Tyler Johnson: No, I'm still working with Peggy, so I…
- 3:57Tad Eggleston: That's right, you're doing two jobs at once.
- 4:01Tyler Johnson: Yeah, so I go to the store at 1 o'clock.
- 4:05Tad Eggleston: So, how many of the kids would tell their parents if you read them really violent comics?
- 4:12Tyler Johnson: Quite a few. Quite a few.
- 4:16Phil: You can stick to Dogman.
- 4:18Tad Eggleston: Don't…
- 4:18Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:18Tad Eggleston: Tell anybody that the guy's head just got lopped off.
- 4:22Tyler Johnson: Well, Dogman, right? The dog… the cop's head gets chopped off, they put dog's head on it.
- 4:27Tad Eggleston: Right!
- 4:28Tyler Johnson: Yeah?
- 4:28Tad Eggleston: Wow.
- 4:29Tad Eggleston: You can just… that's what you say. Anytime there's a head chopped off, you go, well, it's like Dogman. They're gonna take that head, and they're gonna put it on top of a dog. It's just off-panel. You have to fill in the blanks. You show them the chapter in Understanding Comics about gutters.
- 4:49Phil: Dogman? There's a man dog? There's a dog with a man's head that…
- 4:52Tyler Johnson: No, no, it's the opposite.
- 4:53Phil: Does crime?
- 4:55Tyler Johnson: No, it's a… it's a…
- 4:56Phil: Well, no, no, no, I'm saying, well, what Tay was talking about was a situation where the man with the dog head is Dogman, but then the man head goes on the dog, and that sounds like it'd be man-dog.
- 5:06Tyler Johnson: In the dog man… yeah, true. I… I… that would be. But in the story, they threw away the human head and the dog body.
- 5:15Tad Eggleston: But it will turn out, in, in Volume 50.
- 5:20Phil: That some evil scientist collected them.
- 5:23Tyler Johnson: In…
- 5:23Phil: And it's in the 90s phase.
- 5:25Tyler Johnson: He's a cat.
- 5:25Phil: Right, extreme.
- 5:27Tyler Johnson: Davilky has got a great series. I love it. Honestly.
- 5:33Tad Eggleston: It's fantastic.
- 5:33Tyler Johnson: I've been reading it for… I've been reading it to my kids for a long time, so…
- 5:36Tad Eggleston: Right. I mean, I remember when we decided that we had to read Volume 1 for 22 panels.
- 5:43Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 5:45Tad Eggleston: it's high on the list of things that so completely exceeded my expectations that I try really hard to not…
- 5:56Tad Eggleston: Have expectations of things anymore.
- 5:59Tyler Johnson: I've been teaching my daughter how to read using it, because we follow along, right? And she's… she can follow the word balloons really well. Now she's learning panel to panel, and she's getting… she's getting how to follow, you know?
- 6:12Tad Eggleston: So you're giving her both, both, both, both, verbal and, and, and, visual literacy all at once.
- 6:19Tyler Johnson: Yes. Yup.
- 6:20Tad Eggleston: This is…
- 6:23Tad Eggleston: Anyway, this is what…
- 6:25Tyler Johnson: your friends do, right, Ted? With, incorporating, comics into learning?
- 6:30Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. It's this funny thing, this thing that some people have known since, you know, forever, and yet there's still a group of people that are like.
- 6:46Tad Eggleston: We need to be more adult than that.
- 6:49Tyler Johnson: Yeah, you can't have pictures. Pictures, bruh!
- 6:54Phil: Oh. The number of people that I told comics actually do count as reading when I worked at the library was, was pretty dang funny. And they were like, oh, well, you work at a library, so you… of course it matters that you say this.
- 7:06Tyler Johnson: Yeah, and you're like, no, no, no, no, it's… it's true. Same, I've worked at a library, too. You just… you have to, like, push it to people. You'd be like, no, seriously, your kids will love this. I've had people ask me, like, I can't get my kid to read, and I'm like.
- 7:19Tyler Johnson: I was once present…
- 7:22Tad Eggleston: I was once present when… when… A librarian.
- 7:32Tad Eggleston: Who's had a parent.
- 7:34Tad Eggleston: talking to them, my kids read all these comics, blah blah blah blah blah, I can't get them to read real books. Can you… can you, you know, they like this, and they like this, she wants to check out this today, can you show me a real book that's like it?
- 7:49Tad Eggleston: I forget what the book was, but, like, it was… it was a legit graphic novel. I mean, it wasn't even, like.
- 7:57Phil: Dumb kid stuff.
- 7:59Tad Eggleston: Right? So the librarian turned around.
- 8:03Tad Eggleston: Typed some stuff into the computer, turned around, and handed the book that that the… the…
- 8:11Tad Eggleston: Back to her and said, this is a real book. Excellent.
- 8:15Phil: Excellent.
- 8:17Phil: Perfect.
- 8:19Tad Eggleston: It's like, yeah!
- 8:20Phil: That's why I refer to them as book books or word books.
- 8:24Tyler Johnson: Book books or word books? Or word books, yeah.
- 8:28Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 8:31Tad Eggleston: Anyway, some news this week,
- 8:37Tad Eggleston: I just heard, and immediately ordered, Tess Fowler Gutierrez finished up Take the Fall.
- 8:44Tad Eggleston: Which is her, her memoir comic about her, her…
- 8:49Tad Eggleston: Her time with cancer and… and some other things.
- 8:53Tad Eggleston: She's self-publishing it, so you can actually just order it direct from her website. Right now. So, test follower Art.
- 9:02Tad Eggleston: I cannot recommend her art enough, and, like, I…
- 9:09Tad Eggleston: I have anticipated this book since she…
- 9:15Tad Eggleston: put out on that social media site that used to be a CD dive bar and is now a dumpster fire on top of a chemical cesspool.
- 9:26Tad Eggleston: That… that she was… Working on it.
- 9:30Tad Eggleston: So it's out now. Or, out soon. It's available for order now.
- 9:35Tad Eggleston: Actually, in between my ordering the hardcover and my… Getting done ordering the hardcover.
- 9:50Tad Eggleston: It went from saying.
- 9:52Tad Eggleston: Oh, no, it says book as a pre-order again. For a second there, I thought the book as a pre-order had gone away in between, but if it had, it's back again. It had never gone away on the digital copy that I… that I picked up.
- 10:07Tad Eggleston: But, yeah.
- 10:09Tad Eggleston: So, cannot recommend that book enough. Heidi McDonald has a… well, I should make certain I'm quoting properly. I don't know if Heidi wrote it. Heidi's the editor of the beat, so I sometimes use Heidi as shorthand for the beat.
- 10:30Tad Eggleston: But…
- 10:30Phil: Thankfully, she has a whole team, it's no longer a one-woman show.
- 10:33Tad Eggleston: Well, and for the most part, hasn't been.
- 10:36Tad Eggleston: But E.P. Hutchins has a, a, a good review up at the beat. If you want to know more about it.
- 10:45Tad Eggleston: And see some of the…
- 10:48Tad Eggleston: art. You can check that out. There's also a link to, to order directly from
- 10:55Tad Eggleston: tests, so I cannot, CANNOT recommend that.
- 11:00Tad Eggleston: Enough.
- 11:01Tad Eggleston: I think our next two news points go together in really cool ways.
- 11:06Tad Eggleston: So, who wrote the Is It Snowing Yet?
- 11:10Phil: That was me.
- 11:10Tad Eggleston: make that point.
- 11:12Phil: I do, because there, there is a huge snowstorm, that's about to hit the U.S. today, you know, that unfortunately Ted is just now learning about.
- 11:22Tad Eggleston: Well, I knew about the massive cold front.
- 11:25Tyler Johnson: Yeah, -oh.
- 11:27Tad Eggleston: Always go together.
- 11:28Phil: They don't, they don't. But where I am in Nashville, you know, half an inch will shut down the town for a whole day.
- 11:35Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah.
- 11:36Tyler Johnson: Correct, yes.
- 11:36Tad Eggleston: I live in northern Illinois, we're made of Sterner stock.
- 11:41Phil: Exactly, so for us, we are panicking harder than we've panicked before.
- 11:46Tyler Johnson: Latitude-wise, Tad and I are pretty much on the same plane. Where I'm at is, yeah. Yeah, and so where La Verne is at, Minnesota, I'm in the southwest corner of Minnesota. So, I mean, Chicago area and La Verne are very close in latitude. Yeah, I can see that. Yeah.
- 12:04Tad Eggleston: Though that does… that does lead so well into our what kind of week has it been? Because, Tyler, did you throw in the Minnesota General Strike?
- 12:14Phil: No. I also feel that way.
- 12:15Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 12:16Phil: I'm excited! Yeah, General Strike.
- 12:19Tad Eggleston: you know, it was cool that there was, there was some, some real organization for General Strike
- 12:29Tad Eggleston: yesterday, even before lots of places were going to be closed yesterday, I don't know if there's been details of doing more. What I have particularly loved is… is… is how
- 12:40Tad Eggleston: How the protesters are definitely, using their cold weather skills to their advantage.
- 12:50Tad Eggleston: There are many, many, many highlight reels of ICE officers who really don't understand how ICE works.
- 12:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 13:01Tyler Johnson: How do you think… Hey guys, what do you think real ICE agents from a few years ago, actual immigration enforcement, feel about what's going on now?
- 13:11Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 13:13Tad Eggleston: This is where I have to say that when we're talking about ICE, he kind of hijacked it during his first term.
- 13:21Tyler Johnson: Okay, pre- pre-Trump ice. I mean, those guys gotta be like, what the hell? I mean, I think…
- 13:26Phil: I think there's been a call for that for a while, too, you know? Right, okay.
- 13:31Tad Eggleston: And beyond that, Border Patrol, this has actually kind of been their… their M.O. since…
- 13:38Phil: Like… Yeah.
- 13:40Tad Eggleston: they were created during the Bush years?
- 13:44Phil: And…
- 13:44Tyler Johnson: Okay, okay, okay.
- 13:45Tad Eggleston: That's one of the… that's one of the reasons why this is the group to use for this. They don't have that institutional.
- 13:54Phil: statement.
- 13:54Tad Eggleston: Like, when he…
- 13:56Tad Eggleston: When he tries to do… I mean, DHS is the newest department. When he tries to get the FBI to do stuff that they know is wrong, people resign.
- 14:05Phil: Yeah. When he tries to get the Department of Justice to do things that they know are wrong.
- 14:10Tad Eggleston: People resign. These organizations don't have that institutional memory. It makes it easier to mold them. They don't have the people that are like, hey, this is not what we do.
- 14:22Tyler Johnson: You're right.
- 14:23Phil: If anything…
- 14:24Tad Eggleston: Dude.
- 14:24Phil: there might have been… I mean, I don't know for sure that there were, but there might have been people already there who were excited for the advancements.
- 14:31Tad Eggleston: Absolutely.
- 14:32Tyler Johnson: Oh, you're right.
- 14:33Phil: Damn.
- 14:33Tyler Johnson: Yeah, you're… you're right. I mean, I guess…
- 14:36Tad Eggleston: Going back to the ice and ice, you know, I've said many times that everybody needs to be reading Heather Cox Richardson every day.
- 14:44Tad Eggleston: Period. Just do it, don't even ask me about it anymore. Just do it. I've put up enough links that I shouldn't have to link anymore, because you should all be subscribed to her newsletter.
- 14:57Tad Eggleston: But she led the newsletter yesterday with the fact that in the freezing temperatures yesterday, there were tens of thousands of Minnesota protesters
- 15:09Tad Eggleston: bundled up and out on the street with signs like, Nazis Just Never Learn, don't Attack During Winter. Yep.
- 15:20Tad Eggleston: Especially…
- 15:21Phil: They're not… People who are known for their winter.
- 15:24Tyler Johnson: Yeah, exactly. In Minnesota, what this is like, we're bred for this.
- 15:28Tad Eggleston: I just… I just loved that there are signs out there comparing it to Germany walking on… on Russia in winter.
- 15:35Phil: Yeah.
- 15:35Tyler Johnson: Hey, Phil, in your life, have you lived in a winter climate before?
- 15:41Phil: I have, yeah, I was… Oh, you have? Yeah, I was in, Chicagoland for… You were, okay.
- 15:46Phil: 18? Wait, no, hold on. From 2000 to 2018 years? Yeah, so it was a good while.
- 15:53Tyler Johnson: Okay, so yeah, so yes, but you have. So I didn't… I didn't know if snow in Tennessee was, like, new for you.
- 16:00Phil: It's not new for me, but how other people react to it is still new for me, you know? Correct. And I realized part of why they shut down is, okay, when you don't salt the roads, and you're as hilly as things are in Tennessee, you don't even want to go out for anything. You don't even want to try to go out for anything.
- 16:17Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 16:18Tyler Johnson: I agree, yeah.
- 16:20Tad Eggleston: Here's another point, though, in terms of the… that just…
- 16:25Tad Eggleston: master strategy of Stephen Miller and whoever else is deciding.
- 16:31Tad Eggleston: Where and how… Border Patrol and ICE should behave.
- 16:35Tad Eggleston: They're dealing with weather and, and, and, and defeat.
- 16:41Tad Eggleston: let's just call it loserdom. They're dealing with being losers in Minneapolis, so where do they go next?
- 16:50Phil: Maine.
- 16:50Tad Eggleston: The balmy climes of Portland, Maine.
- 16:54Phil: Yep.
- 16:56Phil: Yep.
- 16:58Phil: Yep.
- 17:00Tyler Johnson: Oh, in Maine, yeah, that's balmy.
- 17:02Phil: Yeah.
- 17:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 17:04Phil: That's one where… oh god, I think one of the… one of the stories I heard…
- 17:10Phil: Conan, Minnesota is something like ice… an ice vehicle crashed into a lamppost.
- 17:18Phil: You know, through just natural terrible driving. And then, you know, as onlookers came out to observe, they got out of the car and immediately started tear gassing everyone.
- 17:29Phil: So, yeah, it's, it's, it's beyond shitshow.
- 17:32Tad Eggleston: Let, let us… let us, let us…
- 17:37Tad Eggleston: Let us help you… oh, whoa, you're gonna…
- 17:40Tad Eggleston: You're gonna tear gas us as we try to help you get out of the snow. Hmm…
- 17:45Phil: So, it's… it's… It's… it's farcical that any of this has any positive.
- 17:53Tad Eggleston: I'm also blown out, blown away at how many…
- 17:59Tad Eggleston: law enforcement and even sheriffs that, like… I saw a Maine sheriff
- 18:06Tad Eggleston: give a press conference yesterday, and just everything about him screamed Constitutional Sheriff, so everything about him screamed, I… and I'm not gonna name him or anything like that, because I could be wrong.
- 18:20Tad Eggleston: But, but screamed that, that, like…
- 18:24Tad Eggleston: By and large, he's on their side.
- 18:27Tad Eggleston: But… but between the fact that they had dragged
- 18:33Tad Eggleston: A corrections officer from his own car.
- 18:36Tad Eggleston: And vanished him. And the fact that they had left that car on the road running, rather than doing anything with it.
- 18:48Tad Eggleston: Led to him giving this, like.
- 18:53Tad Eggleston: Fuming press conference about their complete and utter lack of professionalism.
- 18:59Phil: Wow.
- 19:00Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 19:00Phil: So, so you're saying that, that even people who, who were…
- 19:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah, even people who are, like, pro… prone to… even people who… who could very easily be on their side.
- 19:15Tad Eggleston: Are so appalled.
- 19:18Tad Eggleston: At how everything is working.
- 19:22Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 19:24Tad Eggleston: That they're not.
- 19:25Tad Eggleston: Which is kind of hardening, which makes it easier to, at a much quicker pace than we have lately, move into the fact that we have a brand new catalog.
- 19:35Phil: Yeah.
- 19:35Tad Eggleston: Woo!
- 19:36Phil: Official orders due February 26th.
- 19:39Tad Eggleston: We're gonna hit some highlights here, and I remind everybody that we now have the next page at the end of the episode to hear about…
- 19:48Tad Eggleston: All of the cool things that will be available for order.
- 19:53Tad Eggleston: this month. But we're gonna start out with Kevin Smith's return to DC Comics.
- 19:59Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 20:00Tad Eggleston: Zaro. Year. None.
- 20:04Tyler Johnson: It's like that. It's none.
- 20:07Tad Eggleston: It's the indefinitive origin of Superman's bestest enemy ever.
- 20:13Tyler Johnson: Independence.
- 20:13Tad Eggleston: How Bizarro got finished.
- 20:16Tad Eggleston: Kevin Smith and Eric Carrasco team up with visionary artist Nick Patara to tell the definitive, indefinitive origin of the beloved backward bad boy. When Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen and Clark Kent's boss Perry White, leave the planet for a strange adventure in outer space, they discover a dimension that mimics Metropolis and reveres its legendary newspaper.
- 20:36Tad Eggleston: As an article of faith.
- 20:38Tad Eggleston: But is the being behind it all a Superman fan, a creature of chaos, or is he no one at all?
- 20:45Tad Eggleston: Don't be square. Bye Bizarro, year none.
- 20:49Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff is March 9th, and in stores on April 1st.
- 20:54Phil: I just realized the cover is Bizarro standing at… at the edge of the square planet that he lives in.
- 21:01Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 21:02Phil: That's pretty incredible.
- 21:04Phil: Fatara's a wonderful artist.
- 21:07Tad Eggleston: There are a number of really good covers for this.
- 21:09Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it looks good.
- 21:10Tad Eggleston: Abram Mustafa does, .
- 21:15Phil: Oh, yeah, I saw.
- 21:16Tad Eggleston: Rockwell.
- 21:17Phil: Fuck well. Yeah.
- 21:18Tyler Johnson: Sorry guys, that was gross.
- 21:20Tad Eggleston: Cool. Alright, who's got this one?
- 21:23Tyler Johnson: Tyler. Brownfield Action Family, number 1. Yeah, Johnny Mansfield…
- 21:29Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna stop really quickly here to remind you, because you've got your shop. Uncivilized is in Minneapolis, so we should get you in touch with…
- 21:38Tad Eggleston: Tom Kaczynski, because he might be able to come out and do stuff with you, and… or… I don't know how many of his artists are in the Minneapolis area, or whatnot, but…
- 21:49Tad Eggleston: Remind me to get you in touch.
- 21:51Tyler Johnson: We should, definitely. Johnny Mansfield is struggling, no work, no motivation, and within arm's reach of rock bottom.
- 22:00Tyler Johnson: But when he inherits his family's abandoned martial arts studio, his problems may be solved. The only catch? It's in a mysterious and decaying neighborhood known as the Brownfield, and this dysfunctional family is the last thing he wants to deal with.
- 22:16Tyler Johnson: But then, can you ever really escape your family?
- 22:19Tyler Johnson: Brownfield Action Family is a brand new 8-issue indie comic series written and drawn by Eisner-nominated Ted May.
- 22:27Tyler Johnson: and published by Revival House Press.
- 22:31Tyler Johnson: Ted May is an Eisner and Ignott-nominated cartoonist, best known for the comic series Man's Feel… er, Men's Feelings, and
- 22:40Tyler Johnson: injury. May's work has been published in Kramer's Urgot, Simpsons Comics, The Best American Comic Series, Nickelodeon Magazine, and Vice.
- 22:50Tyler Johnson: Mae currently lives in St. Louis, Missouri, with his wife, the cartoonist Sasha Mordeaux, along with their daughter, Ann. Two cats. This is going to be in shops April 22nd. Final order cutoff will be March 23rd.
- 23:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah, and it looks like it might actually be that it's published through Revival House and, and…
- 23:12Tad Eggleston: distributed by Uncivilized, because Tom… Tom has been helping out some of the…
- 23:17Tad Eggleston: Smaller… smaller publishers get their… get their books… To market in the, the… Post-diamond era.
- 23:28Phil: That's awesome.
- 23:31Phil: So Uncivilized is more of a collective or…
- 23:34Tad Eggleston: No, it's definitely… no, it's definitely a publisher.
- 23:37Phil: Okay.
- 23:38Tad Eggleston: He, I think, was just in a better…
- 23:43Tad Eggleston: position post-Diamond than some of his
- 23:46Tad Eggleston: like, cause I know, like, later.
- 23:49Tad Eggleston: this month, or possibly even later today, we'll have one from Living the Line that's… that he's distributing, at least to Lunar.
- 23:57Tad Eggleston: But technically, the publisher is living the line.
- 24:02Tad Eggleston: So, kind of like Massive has Massive Indies, only he doesn't…
- 24:06Phil: Okay.
- 24:07Tad Eggleston: Quite the… yeah.
- 24:09Phil: Gotcha. Next up, we've got, did you hear about Mimi Green, number one, from Connor Goldsmith, Josh Cornelia?
- 24:18Phil: And Dark Horse Comics, tastemaker Mimi Green is a popular essayist with a perfectly curated social media presence, until a blog post she wrote a decade ago, cruelly mocking fat people, resurfaces and sparks a vital fur… a viral fur.
- 24:34Tad Eggleston: viral.
- 24:34Phil: Yes.
- 24:35Tad Eggleston: Meaning…
- 24:37Phil: Fuhrer, yeah. Mimi checks into an isolated mental health facility in Topanga to ride out the scandal, but as sound baths and crystal healings by day give way to restless nights, she's pulled into another version of the building. There are hall…
- 24:53Phil: There, the halls are old and gluttonous and gilded, and the vainglorious, like Mimi and her fellow patients, are punished again and again. Only local bartender Natalie, the lesbian lover Mimi hid from the public, stands a chance of tracking her down before it's too late.
- 25:09Phil: And that one is gonna have a final… oh, this is, yeah.
- 25:14Phil: Gonna be a final order cutoff of April 20th, in stores, May 27th from Dark Horse Comics.
- 25:22Tad Eggleston: Alright, this is a re-solicit and a rename. I was so sad when this popped up as canceled, but now it doesn't say canceled, it says HAB rather than Habitat.
- 25:34Phil: Nice.
- 25:35Tad Eggleston: The Hab, Eisner-nominated writer Joshua Dysart combines his powers with…
- 25:42Tad Eggleston: And just wait for it, because holy shit is this a team.
- 25:46Phil: Holy shit. World-renowned comic artist David Lapham.
- 25:49Tad Eggleston: comic book legend Bill Sienkiewicz, and Eisner-nominated comic artist Jacob Phillips.
- 25:55Tad Eggleston: Who, by the way, is well on his way to taking over the world.
- 26:00Tad Eggleston: And award-winning colorists Bill Crabtree and Matt Hollingsworth.
- 26:05Tad Eggleston: to present the groundbreaking horror tour de force mercurial
- 26:10Tad Eggleston: Billionaire Tuttle Barrows prepared for everything, even the end of the world. Years ago, he wielded his immense power and fortune to build a massive sealed habitat atop a once-protected ancient freshwater glacial cave.
- 26:24Tad Eggleston: Now, as the world outside unravels, Barrows, his family, and a hand-picked inner circle retreat to their final sanctuary, a place built to outlast civilization itself.
- 26:36Tad Eggleston: But something was already there. Beneath layers of ice, in the ancient freshwater vault, a long, dormant danger lurks. While hallucinations twist their reality and violence spreads like a fever, they must descend deeper, or risk their last refuge.
- 26:53Tad Eggleston: becoming a tune. This is from Bad Idea Comics. Final order cutoff is March 9th, in stores on April 8th, and…
- 27:03Tad Eggleston: I haven't been… I mean, they could have said that they were drawing, like, a cookbook.
- 27:10Tad Eggleston: put that team together, and I am, like.
- 27:12Tyler Johnson: I would buy it. Yeah, for sure. Astounding.
- 27:15Tad Eggleston: Want to know what their cookbook looked like.
- 27:18Tyler Johnson: For sure.
- 27:19Tad Eggleston: My mom is pointing out I look like cookbooks, but…
- 27:24Tad Eggleston: I suppose she's one quarter of the listeners. Hi, Mom, hi Britt, hi.
- 27:29Tyler Johnson: And one quarter.
- 27:30Tad Eggleston: You know, so… But I was trying to illustrate a point to the other three, Mom.
- 27:38Phil: I hope she still listens to this episode to hear what Tyler and I have to say.
- 27:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Phil wants to remind you that you still need to listen to this episode, because you can't hear what he and Tyler are saying.
- 27:49Phil: That's exactly what I said, yep. Perfect. No notes.
- 27:54Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 27:55Phil: This one I am very excited for. This is, In Your Skin by Aditya Bhitikar, Writing, with art from, Sung.
- 28:05Phil: S-O-M,
- 28:07Phil: Priyanka is a Bollywood Uber fan who has been obsessed with film star Aisha Sen since she was a kid. She's watched her movies over and over and knows her dances beat for beat. But after a once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet her idol goes awry, and Aisha announces her impending retirement from movies, Priyanka decides that if Aisha isn't going to live the life she's supposed to, Priyanka
- 28:31Phil: would be more than happy to take over for her. Bollywood body horror meets erotic fiction, and writer Adicha Bhitikar's debut series with rising star artist Song.
- 28:41Phil: Known for Crocodile Black, a twisted exploration of celebrity culture, identity, and image that's perfect for fans of The Substance and David Cronberg. Final order cutoff of March 30th, in stores, April 22nd, again from Image Comics. Yeah, that sounds absolutely incredible.
- 29:00Tad Eggleston: Well, and I love Aditya's lettering, and I long have insisted that letters are the unsung heroes of comics. They often know how to do everything, and it's just that, like, not enough people actually know how to do what they do.
- 29:15Phil: And I'm…
- 29:15Tad Eggleston: roles they do.
- 29:16Phil: additionally excited, because he… he took a step back from lettering a couple years ago now, so this is kind of like a return as writer, and that's… he's… I followed him on social media, he is insightful and incredible, so, yeah.
- 29:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, no.
- 29:28Phil: Super cool.
- 29:29Tad Eggleston: He's not one of the letters we've had on the show yet, but… but I hope to rectify that.
- 29:35Phil: I would be excited.
- 29:37Tad Eggleston: So… Alrighty.
- 29:41Tyler Johnson: The oddball spots. Hold on a second, I'm gonna go back. Sure.
- 29:45Tad Eggleston: Because this is another one with a bunch of really cool covers.
- 29:49Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 29:49Tad Eggleston: four alternate.
- 29:50Phil: wire.
- 29:50Tad Eggleston: wall.
- 29:51Tad Eggleston: Mickey Mouse. These are all, open order cutters, covers, too.
- 29:56Phil: There's a Winsor McKay tribute.
- 29:58Phil: Well, they're not tributes, they're actually… Oh, that's actual Windsor McKay?
- 30:02Tad Eggleston: really taking…
- 30:03Phil: Holy shit.
- 30:04Tad Eggleston: They're reprinting… The artwork, oh…
- 30:08Phil: Wow.
- 30:09Tad Eggleston: actual Little Nemo comic as the cover of one of them, you have an actual Thimble theater comic as the.
- 30:17Phil: clever one.
- 30:18Tad Eggleston: one of them that's actual Mickey Mouse stuff from one of the early Mickey Mouse Anoration artists, and that's actual Tin Tin from Hersge, as you're.
- 30:27Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 30:27Tad Eggleston: for the, the four… That would be expensive. Or your first four variant covers, the open order covers.
- 30:34Phil: Some of those are in public domain now, I believe.
- 30:37Tad Eggleston: They might actually all be public domain.
- 30:40Tyler Johnson: That's what I thought would happen.
- 30:41Tad Eggleston: how it happened.
- 30:42Tyler Johnson: Well, Mickey, yes, but I wasn't sure, you know, that's crazy.
- 30:46Tad Eggleston: Windsor and E.C. Seeger are both older than Mickey.
- 30:52Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah, you're right.
- 30:53Tad Eggleston: And her… and Hersge is…
- 30:59Tad Eggleston: I don't know if the HERGE is older, but I do know that European copyright law isn't as long as ours.
- 31:08Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 31:08Tad Eggleston: So…
- 31:09Tyler Johnson: Right. So, Oddball's Odyssey is written by Tony Millionaire, with art by Tony as well, and Jim Campbell. Tony is a winner of 5 Eisner Awards, 3 Harvey Awards, and an Ignatz.
- 31:22Tyler Johnson: is the revolutionary cartoonist behind the critically acclaimed Sock Monkey graphic novels, and the world-renowned… I can't read that… Matthews?
- 31:31Tyler Johnson: Maki's Comic Strips, collaborating with superstar colorist Jim Campbell.
- 31:36Tyler Johnson: Millionaire nimbly fuses the master storytelling of Homer's The Odyssey with the surreal beauty and intricately rendered linework of Mobius's Arzak to deliver this breathtaking masterpiece. Divine Providence has finally done what no other… no hangover ever could.
- 31:55Tyler Johnson: Bobby Doherty is sober, but fate works fast, and it's fate works fast, and it's not long until Bobby tumbles back off the wagon. A single glance at the radiant swan, Lucia Serena D. Del Mar, leaves the former boozehound monkey drunk on…
- 32:14Tyler Johnson: the former boozehound, monkey drunk on love and hopelessly devoted, when Lucia takes
- 32:20Tyler Johnson: blight? Bobby refuses to let his chance at love slip through his fingers, joined by his beautiful friend.
- 32:28Tyler Johnson: Jimmy… or, excuse me, Faithful Friend, I… this is very, what you have.
- 32:32Phil: Implementing some romance that wasn't.
- 32:34Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 32:34Phil: before.
- 32:35Tyler Johnson: His… I can't read it. Okay, his faithful friend, Jimmy Skunk, he sets off on a perilous journey across distant lands, through impossible labyrinths, over treacherous seas, and into the path of a vicious, fire-spitting minotaur in an epic quest to win Lucius' heart.
- 32:53Tyler Johnson: That's awesome, guys. This is gonna be in, final order cutoff of March 9th, and will be in stores April 18th.
- 33:01Tad Eggleston: April 8th.
- 33:03Tyler Johnson: God dang it!
- 33:04Tyler Johnson: April 8th.
- 33:06Tad Eggleston: God, don't listen. From Bad Idea, and Tyler needs to set up an eye exam.
- 33:13Tyler Johnson: No, you're, you know how you've done this on your screen? Which is amazing, by the way, but on my end, the text is slightly blurry.
- 33:22Phil: No, I get it.
- 33:23Tyler Johnson: And so, I'm just gonna start pulling up my reads on my own, in the future, in the future.
- 33:28Tad Eggleston: Are you certain that it's not blurry because you need a new pair of glasses?
- 33:32Tyler Johnson: Well, I've got a split screen right here, and my own screen is crystal clear.
- 33:36Tad Eggleston: And your other side's not blurring. Fair.
- 33:38Tyler Johnson: Yes, yeah, yeah. Yours is on your, presentation you made. It's just, just slightly…
- 33:45Tad Eggleston: Presentation, we're just looking at the webpages.
- 33:47Tyler Johnson: Oh…
- 33:48Tad Eggleston: I didn't have the time to do the presentation this week.
- 33:50Tyler Johnson: Oh, oh, oh, oh, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool.
- 33:52Tad Eggleston: We went old school.
- 33:53Tyler Johnson: Alright, I got another one, How to Make Comics. Hardcover by Kim Deich. How I Make Comics is not just about Kim Deich Makes Comics.
- 34:03Tyler Johnson: but about how comics made him. The book Pinwheels Between Real Autobiography and an imagined comics history, but it begins in 1952 with the true story of 8-year-old Kim Deich appearing in the audience of a Howdy Doody show with 8-year-old Donna Trump.
- 34:20Tad Eggleston: Don?
- 34:21Tyler Johnson: what was it? Donnie Trump.
- 34:22Tad Eggleston: Donnie Trump.
- 34:23Tyler Johnson: Oh, God, I can't read. Donnie Trump! Oh, that's even better! Following Donnie's attempt to rig an election among the audience, no kidding, Dice relates a famous newspaper account of a diminutive wife who valiantly defends her equally diminutive husband in court, who just happens to be the inspiration of Harold Gray's little orphan Annie.
- 34:45Tyler Johnson: Periodically, Kim asks his own wife for her critique and advice of the stories he's told so far, which he takes into account for future tales that include revenge-driven circus performers, fairytale mural painters.
- 35:00Tyler Johnson: sordid comic book lore, comic readers creating real-life superheroes, impossibly old cats issuing supernatural judgments, and inhabiting the bodies of future humans, culminating in the real-life story of Kim's mother hitchhiking across the country.
- 35:17Tyler Johnson: This, graphic not…
- 35:19Tad Eggleston: more if you want to go read it at Lunar, if you need…
- 35:23Tyler Johnson: Yeah, there's a…
- 35:25Tad Eggleston: But… but we decided that was a good…
- 35:27Tyler Johnson: cut off.
- 35:28Tad Eggleston: I think it's the first time I've ever cut mid-sentence, but I still decided it was the right spot.
- 35:34Tyler Johnson: Kay, this is, from Phantographics, guys, and, final order cutoff is March 2nd, and again, in stores April 8th, this time, not 18th. 8th.
- 35:46Tad Eggleston: 8.
- 35:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 35:47Tad Eggleston: It's that slash. That slash looks like a 1.
- 35:52Tyler Johnson: But you know what? You are not wrong in that my eyes are bad. I ha-
- 35:56Tyler Johnson: These are new… a new prescription in my lenses, and I am trying to get used to them, but yeah.
- 36:02Tad Eggleston: Have you had to go bifocals yet? I've had to go.
- 36:05Tyler Johnson: A couple times, I've gone back and forth, because I… I've had bifocals.
- 36:09Tad Eggleston: of lenses.
- 36:10Tyler Johnson: Same, yeah. I've gone back and forth, and it just…
- 36:14Tyler Johnson: I don't know. I just can't get used to it, or I'm resistant to it, I don't know.
- 36:18Tad Eggleston: But I have the solution.
- 36:20Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 36:22Tad Eggleston: We'll just remove your eyes, and then your… Perfect.
- 36:25Phil: their senses.
- 36:27Tad Eggleston: will heighten.
- 36:29Tyler Johnson: Holy cow, I read a comic. I read a comic! Wait, I read a comic about this, you guys. I've read one! God, what's it called?
- 36:36Phil: You know, I'm downright…
- 36:37Tyler Johnson: A day or something?
- 36:38Phil: Shocked that Cad is suggesting something that will make Tyler the Matt Murdock of this podcast over him.
- 36:45Tyler Johnson: That's it, that we're not dirty honey.
- 36:47Tad Eggleston: honest, I was thinking about the whole… the whole,
- 36:51Tad Eggleston: the whole, Watcher saga, where Nick Fury had stolen his off.
- 36:58Phil: Oh, yeah! Yeah, that was.
- 36:59Tyler Johnson: It's pretty good.
- 37:00Phil: interesting. This is… this is where also…
- 37:02Tad Eggleston: I think what it was called.
- 37:03Phil: Yep, that sounds about right.
- 37:05Tad Eggleston: That was actually… that's actually an underrated event, I think.
- 37:10Phil: I'd reevaluate it, I know it's a time…
- 37:13Tad Eggleston: I haven't read all of it, but I've read enough of it to go, oh, there's some really good stuff in here.
- 37:18Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Do you guys…
- 37:20Phil: This is a point where I'd also say to those intrepid listeners that, Tad is wearing sunglasses indoors, like… No, I am not wearing it.
- 37:28Tad Eggleston: Wearing sunglasses indoors.
- 37:30Phil: They transition lenses that are stuck in some.
- 37:33Tyler Johnson: That never… that never transition.
- 37:35Tad Eggleston: They're not transition lenses.
- 37:37Phil: Oh no, what are they?
- 37:38Tad Eggleston: They're a red-tinted lens that.
- 37:40Phil: Huh.
- 37:40Tad Eggleston: That helps prevent my migraines.
- 37:43Phil: And your optic blasts from, harming any nearby standards?
- 37:47Tad Eggleston: I mean, sure, but I mean, like, I can wear them at night, and it doesn't make it so that I see worse.
- 37:53Phil: Okay.
- 37:54Tyler Johnson: Oh…
- 37:54Phil: Apologies, apologies for the, for the assumption, but that's actually, that's really cool. And, it makes you…
- 38:01Tad Eggleston: I actually…
- 38:02Phil: You look like Joe Cool. You're in Joe Cool.
- 38:04Tad Eggleston: No, no, like, in my autism journey, I have discovered that tinted lenses make a massive difference for me, so I actually…
- 38:12Tyler Johnson: I was just gonna bring that up, interesting is, like, less, less stimulant.
- 38:16Phil: Okay.
- 38:16Tad Eggleston: These… these red-tinted lenses, I have blue-tinted lenses, and I have yellow-tinted lenses, and it kind of depends on the lighting, it depends on my mood. That's awesome. You know, at this point, I carry all of them with me most of the time, and I think I do… well, I know I do, yeah.
- 38:32Tyler Johnson: I love the Cyclops reference, that was awesome.
- 38:35Tyler Johnson: What's happening? Tad without glasses? Holy buckets.
- 38:39Tad Eggleston: I do also have my pair that doesn't have the tint that I often put on for when I'm doing the podcast, because depending on the lighting, there's enough sunlight coming in from that way, and enough light from the light up here, that I'm more col…
- 38:57Tad Eggleston: Comfortable with the tint today.
- 38:59Phil: tinted up. I mean, I know when you're at home, you usually have a nice purple going on.
- 39:04Tad Eggleston: It's actually this pair.
- 39:06Tyler Johnson: Oh, is it? Maybe it's your hat. No, I meant your purple… your purple lighting.
- 39:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, no, yeah, I have a purple or blue. Yeah, because in my room, I actually bought light bulbs that I can change the color of using.
- 39:18Phil: I love those. Those are fun.
- 39:19Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Yeah.
- 39:21Tad Eggleston: Yale.
- 39:21Tad Eggleston: And again, because I've found that I can do huge amounts of…
- 39:28Tad Eggleston: Huge amounts of settling my nerves, my mood.
- 39:31Phil: My, my, my…
- 39:34Tad Eggleston: level of, of, of, of stimulation.
- 39:37Tyler Johnson: Just by adjusting the inputs.
- 39:41Tad Eggleston: In little ways.
- 39:43Phil: Cool.
- 39:44Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, not sunglasses.
- 39:46Phil: Okay, I stand corrected.
- 39:47Tad Eggleston: They work okay with sunglasses. You know, I don't have to switch to sunglasses as often, but I sometimes still do, because, like, if it's bright, bright sun, they're not designed for that. They're not, like, they're not like the 100% UV blocking or anything like that. They're… they're… yeah.
- 40:05Phil: Interesting. This, interlude is brought to you by the fact that I had forgotten that I picked this next one, which is…
- 40:13Tad Eggleston: That's true.
- 40:13Phil: Survive the end of the world.
- 40:16Tyler Johnson: Oh, Phil, were you waiting for one of us to just…
- 40:18Phil: No, no, no, no. At first I was, and then I checked the rundown, and I was like, oh, this was me? I completely forgot that I picked this one.
- 40:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I was actually a little upset that you ganked this one from me, so, like, I forgot it, just…
- 40:29Tad Eggleston: me sad.
- 40:30Phil: I'm sorry.
- 40:31Tyler Johnson: That's a cool.
- 40:31Phil: You know?
- 40:32Phil: It just means.
- 40:33Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna have to…
- 40:33Phil: Read it! This is How to Survive the End of the World by Katie Doty, a graphic exploration of how to maybe avoid extinction.
- 40:41Phil: from… is that… well, I'm looking for a… MIT?
- 40:46Tad Eggleston: press.
- 40:47Phil: MITine Press, okay, interesting.
- 40:50Tad Eggleston: So apparently MIT has a young adult line.
- 40:54Phil: Ho ho, there we go! Since 99.9% of all species that have lived are extinct, it's bound to be our turn eventually, right?
- 41:04Phil: So what's most likely to kill us? A well-timed asteroid? Some new robot overlords? With wit and dry humor, debut graphic novelist Katie Doty bled science and history to explore our chances of surviving disasters such as plagues, global warming, and alien invasion.
- 41:20Phil: Drawing on interviews with experts in fields like infectious diseases, AI, and interplanetary exploration, she combines cutting-edge research with compelling visuals, mugshots of the deadliest microbes, graphs of the winners and losers of mass extinction events, and a whole lot of dinosaur drawings. From apocalypse aficionados, the morbidly curious, and the just plain curious.
- 41:42Phil: This is your antidote for existential dread, a timely, imaginative, and ultimately hopeful take on humanity's ability to survive the odds.
- 41:51Phil: And that one is gonna have a final order cut off of March 2nd in stores, March 31st, again, from MIT Press, the YA-MIT line.
- 42:03Tad Eggleston: This… I mean, I don't know what part of this I love the most, that apparently…
- 42:09Phil: Pretty great.
- 42:10Tad Eggleston: that apparently MIT has a YA line.
- 42:14Phil: that…
- 42:15Tad Eggleston: that we have a… I love it. …a heavily researched…
- 42:22Tad Eggleston: But also humorous, comic… about various
- 42:30Tad Eggleston: Realistic and unrealistic ends to the world.
- 42:35Tad Eggleston: -
- 42:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 42:38Phil: Yeah, I love…
- 42:39Tad Eggleston: Everything about this.
- 42:41Phil: Yeah. It is… it is, it… and the cover has a 9-panel grid. It's… yeah. It's… there's so much to love.
- 42:50Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 42:53Tad Eggleston: And they get their pull quote from Jeff Kinney, author of Diary of a Wimpy… Wimpy kid.
- 43:01Phil: That is a solid endorsement.
- 43:04Tad Eggleston: It's not only a solid endorsement, there's just so much irony… irony…
- 43:09Tad Eggleston: Ironity, I like that. That's a good word.
- 43:12Tad Eggleston: for… even more so for people who haven't read this stuff, to just… just go, oh, how to survive the End of the World, recommended by the guy who wrote Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
- 43:22Phil: Right?
- 43:23Tyler Johnson: Hey! That's awesome.
- 43:27Tad Eggleston: But yeah, there's also, you know, the atom bomb and the, and the…
- 43:34Tad Eggleston: Asteroid, and the germs, and the tsunami, and the killer robot, and the gas, and the dinosaurs.
- 43:41Tad Eggleston: And the heat.
- 43:43Tad Eggleston: You just, yeah, great on all levels.
- 43:46Tad Eggleston: I'm also really looking forward to this, and I'm gonna have to reach out to Jenny and bring her back, because she's one of my favorite guests to talk to. I didn't ask for this from Jenny Wood and Josh Cornelian at
- 44:00Tad Eggleston: Mad Cave? If your entire life was online against your will, if everyone knew about your potty training, your first breakup, and even your coming out story, how would you feel?
- 44:15Tad Eggleston: I Didn't Ask For This follows the members of Not Your Baby Anymore, a group of kids who share one thing in common. Their parents are social media influencers who have shared their entire lives online.
- 44:28Tad Eggleston: The group forms a chosen family as each member struggles with how to break away from a life and fame that they didn't ask for and do not
- 44:36Tad Eggleston: want.
- 44:37Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff is March 23rd, in stores on April 15th.
- 44:44Tad Eggleston: Tyler Gankin, a book I wanted.
- 44:47Tyler Johnson: You wanted this one? I love this.
- 44:49Tad Eggleston: I want, like, so many of them, though. I know I'm not gonna get all the ones I wanted, but…
- 44:54Tyler Johnson: Dave Baker.
- 44:54Tad Eggleston: Baker is…
- 44:55Tyler Johnson: Yep, yep.
- 44:57Tad Eggleston: day bigger. I also love Nicole Goo, but…
- 45:00Tyler Johnson: You know, pumpkin heads, punk, and heads, you know, like Guns N' Roses.
- 45:07Tyler Johnson: The band plays together, lives together, and unfortunately, two of them are sleeping together, whether I'm sure… whatever, I'm sure it's fine. Now put on your pumpkin mask and let's rock.
- 45:18Tyler Johnson: Hannah Lipski isn't sure what's happening. She dreamed of becoming a flying art painter, but after breaking up with her girlfriend, she suddenly dropped off… she suddenly dropped out of art school, moved into a flophouse, and gotten roped into singing a campy horror punk band.
- 45:35Tyler Johnson: With costumes. To make things even more complicated, she might be hooking up with her housemate, bandmate, high school crush, Jerry.
- 45:44Tyler Johnson: wherever this is leading, it's going to be messy. Guys, this is gonna be in shop, or excuse me, Final Order Coff, March 2nd, and in shops April 7th, from IDW.
- 45:56Tad Eggleston: Well, and, and, like, Baker and… and Goo.
- 46:00Tyler Johnson: Oh yeah, from Dave Baker, and…
- 46:01Tad Eggleston: number of times.
- 46:02Tyler Johnson: Cool Goom.
- 46:02Tad Eggleston: before, and…
- 46:05Tad Eggleston: They, they, they are brilliant alone, they are brilliant with other people, and they are brilliant, brilliant, brilliant together, so, yeah. I am very much looking forward to this book.
- 46:17Tyler Johnson: Oh, it looks great.
- 46:18Tad Eggleston: From top shelf.
- 46:21Phil: Next up, was that normal? From Alex Potts. It was like he'd missed the main part of the story. It arrived between the big climax and the end credits. A new order had established itself, and everyone apart from him was living happily ever after. Nothing interesting could possibly happen between now and the ending.
- 46:40Phil: Philip is searching for meaning, for connection, for someone to share a moment with. By day, he works from a rented room. By night, he drifts through cafes and bars, dodging awkward chats with his landlady and hoping for something more. When he meets Gina, a local musician.
- 46:57Phil: Things begin to shift, but relationships are messy. Philip's discomfort grows as he stumbles through miscommunications, emotional misfires, and the looming presence of Gina's intense ex.
- 47:09Phil: Add in a crumbling tower, gong baths, whatever they are, and a quiet ache of modern life, and you have a story that's tender, funny, and deeply healing.
- 47:18Phil: A beautifully observed graphic novel about connection, confusion, and spaces in between. Beautifully observed contemporary fiction graphic novel, oh, that was a double line, about connection, confusion, the spaces in between from a rising star in the UK comic scene. It's gonna be a final word of cutoff of March 9th in stores, April 1st.
- 47:37Phil: Awesome.
- 47:37Tad Eggleston: from Avery Hill.
- 47:39Phil: Yes, thank you, that… that sounds… that's, that was…
- 47:42Phil: oddly, synchronicity with, Philip… Philip 1L. Did not know that was coming.
- 47:50Tad Eggleston: Alright, and I have a whole folder of this guy's stuff that he sent me, and I haven't gotten.
- 47:56Phil: That's awesome.
- 47:56Tad Eggleston: to reading, and I need to, and I need to reach out to him and finally have him on the show, because I feel terrible that it's, like, fallen by the wayside, but…
- 48:05Phil: I love this guy's art, too!
- 48:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Benny Sears, Young Shadow and the Watch Dogs from Fana Graphics. Young Shadow usually protects sci-fi Bolt City by making deliveries for the food bank and rescuing pets. But this time around, he needs to focus on two things, hitting and pitching.
- 48:23Tad Eggleston: When the young Shadow and the eight watchdogs, Elmore Jerry, Larry Gomez, Marta, Ketchum, Rolando, and Junior investigate.
- 48:32Tad Eggleston: A concerning chemical sludge being dumped into Bolt City's water, Elmore discovers a haunted baseball glove and inadvertently summons a team from the beyond that challenges them to a game to the death.
- 48:45Tad Eggleston: With the stadium full of hostile vampires, mummies, Frankensteins, and ghouls rooting for the visitors, the watchdogs enlist Young Shadow to fill out their roster and save Bold City.
- 48:56Tad Eggleston: This exciting new middle-aged graphic novel from cartoonist and musician Ben Sears establishes a world that embraces classic superhero sci-fi and supernatural comics without any irony, executed in a beautiful.
- 49:08Tad Eggleston: two-tone color scheme of jet black and mustardy yellow that perfectly suits the spooky, fun, and fast-paced adventure. Young Shadow and the Watchdogs is a page-turner for readers of any age.
- 49:21Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff is March 16th in stores on April 22nd, and
- 49:29Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna have to make my apologies to Ben Sears, that, like, he sent me a folder worth of stuff.
- 49:37Tad Eggleston: A while ago that I never got around to following up on.
- 49:43Tad Eggleston: Because this looks…
- 49:45Phil: To be fair, you've been busy.
- 49:47Tad Eggleston: You've read a lot.
- 49:49Tad Eggleston: Because this, this, this looks amazing. Like, like, amazing, amazing. Like, like, like, really, really amazing.
- 49:57Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna laugh if it's one of the things in the folder, it doesn't look like it is.
- 50:07Tad Eggleston: But I had to go check.
- 50:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah, from Fanak Graphics, I, I am, I am all over this book.
- 50:16Tad Eggleston: So how about some collections?
- 50:20Tyler Johnson: Alright, let's dig into collections. Who's up first? Oh, me!
- 50:25Phil: That's him.
- 50:26Tyler Johnson: Alright, Cheetah and Cheshire robbed the Watchtower. Trade paperback?
- 50:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I feel like they renamed it, and I don't know if I'm happy, because it used to be Cheetah and Cheshire robbed the Justice League.
- 50:38Tyler Johnson: The Justice.
- 50:38Tad Eggleston: Now it's Justice League! Cheetah and Cheshire robbed the Watchtower, and it's like…
- 50:44Phil: You know, you know what that is? That's… that's the, that's the marketing, so that, like, at, at the library, they organize books based on, like, the lead character.
- 50:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it gets put with the Justice League books, as opposed to where it belongs with the Cheetah books.
- 51:00Phil: And Cheshire Rob Books.
- 51:03Tyler Johnson: Oh man, I still make that mistake every time I see it now, because it's so ingrained in my head from when that happened. Okay, the heist of the century, the DCU's most dangerous criminals. I should say this is Greg Rucco with art by Nikola Scott.
- 51:21Tyler Johnson: Okay, the heist of the century. The DCU's most dangerous criminals attempt an impossible heist, robbing the Justice League watchtower. To even have a chance of making the score, they'll have to assemble a team of talented misfits and oddballs, somehow convince them to work together, and get away with it.
- 51:40Tyler Johnson: Easy enough, except for a few tiny complications.
- 51:44Tyler Johnson: such as sophisticated orbital platform ever constructed, as AI-driven security… its AI-driven security system, and, well, the smartest, most powerful superheroes in the DC Universe. This is the final order cutoff of March 26th. We'll be in…
- 52:03Tad Eggleston: March 9th.
- 52:04Tad Eggleston: Initial order is February 26th.
- 52:08Tyler Johnson: Oh, okay, then on the… on the rundown that you typed up.
- 52:11Tad Eggleston: Oh, I typed it wrong on the…
- 52:14Tyler Johnson: Yep, it's February 26th, with a release of May 19th.
- 52:22Tyler Johnson: We see that there, yeah.
- 52:24Tyler Johnson: Anywho, from DC Comics.
- 52:27Tyler Johnson: Ted is fixing it.
- 52:29Tyler Johnson: March…
- 52:30Tad Eggleston: on the rundown!
- 52:31Tyler Johnson: March 9th will be out May 19th.
- 52:36Tad Eggleston: That's what it says. I looked at the initial order date on accident. Sorry.
- 52:44Tyler Johnson: No problem.
- 52:46Phil: Next up is Everything Dead and Dying from Tate Bromble and, That World Conqueror Jacob Phillips.
- 52:53Phil: Be lagged.
- 52:53Tad Eggleston: Amazing.
- 52:54Tyler Johnson: He's amazing!
- 52:56Phil: The Last of Us meets Yellowstone in this haunting rural character piece set during the aftermath of a zombie outbreak. Jack Chandler's the sole survivor of the zombie apocalypse in his rural farming community.
- 53:08Phil: But rather than eliminate them, he has chosen to continue living alongside the undead, including the husband and adopted daughter he fought so hard to have. But when his town is discovered by outsiders, Jack suddenly becomes the one thing standing in the way of his family and those who hope to kill them for good. Eisner Award-nominated creators Tate Bromble and Jacob Phillips team up for this unforgettable original story.
- 53:33Phil: Final order cutoff of March 2nd, in stores, April 8th, over at Image Comics.
- 53:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 53:42Tad Eggleston: This is where I'm gonna, have either of you seen Megalopolis?
- 53:47Phil: I haven't.
- 53:49Tad Eggleston: Okay, so…
- 53:50Phil: I know that you enjoyed the graphic novel adaptation of it.
- 53:53Tad Eggleston: Well, what I was gonna say is I talked to Chris Ryle yesterday, who did the writing on that, and one of the things… we spent some time talking about Jacob Phillips and his amazingness, and one of the things that Ryle talked about is that, like, he was so happy that he was able to get him at that time, because.
- 54:09Phil: he has.
- 54:10Tad Eggleston: a feeling that managing to, like, just pluck Jacob Phillips for a 166-page graphic novel…
- 54:18Phil: Yeah.
- 54:19Tad Eggleston: Is not something that's gonna be easy to do anytime ever again.
- 54:26Phil: It's almost, it's almost like, the world's waking up to his talent.
- 54:31Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 54:32Tyler Johnson: Weird. It's weird.
- 54:33Tad Eggleston: I'm also gonna say, like, I finally saw the movie.
- 54:36Phil: Okay.
- 54:37Tad Eggleston: And I like it so much more than… than…
- 54:42Tad Eggleston: Most of the critics and whatnot seemed to like it.
- 54:47Tad Eggleston: And I think part of that is because I read the comic first.
- 54:52Tad Eggleston: Which… which both… I enjoyed more, and think told the story just a little bit better.
- 55:00Tad Eggleston: But… It prepared me for what type of movie it was gonna be.
- 55:05Tad Eggleston: Okay. I think… I think that this is one of the movies that might still go down as Coppola's magnum opus, but it could take 10 or 20 years, because what it's not is The Godfather, or Apocalypse Now, or anything even remotely resembling them. So… so, like…
- 55:24Tad Eggleston: people going in with any sort of expectation based on Coppola.
- 55:29Phil: Hmm.
- 55:32Tad Eggleston: just are… I mean, it's like we were talking about with Dogman earlier. Like, like…
- 55:40Tad Eggleston: If you go into Dogman expecting a dumb kid's book.
- 55:43Tad Eggleston: You have to completely reset yourself when you go, oh my god, this is intelligent, this is teaching them about how comics work, how to make comics, how to be…
- 55:53Tad Eggleston: confident in themselves, there's real vocabulary in it, so it's really good for learning reading, blah blah blah. You know,
- 56:03Tad Eggleston: when I finally saw it, and I've watched it twice now, it's like…
- 56:06Phil: Nope.
- 56:06Tad Eggleston: Oh…
- 56:11Tad Eggleston: I already knew, kind of, what he was trying to do, because he'd worked from the comic.
- 56:16Tad Eggleston: Which meant that my expectations were about, did he manage to…
- 56:21Tad Eggleston: also accomplish what I think is the beauty of the messages in the comic, not… Is it the Godfather?
- 56:29Phil: Hmm. Yeah.
- 56:31Phil: I can see that.
- 56:33Tad Eggleston: That's my recommendation for the two of you, particularly because it's hard to manage to see Megalopolis right now. Go read the graphic novel sooner rather than later. And then I do recommend seeing the movie when you can, because I think it's actually really, really good.
- 56:46Phil: But you need to have…
- 56:50Tad Eggleston: You need to come… either come at it with, like, no expectations whatsoever, manage to forget that it's Francis Vo Coppola, manage to forget that it's Adam Driver, and… and,
- 57:03Tad Eggleston: Aubrey Plaza, and any of the other characters that they've played.
- 57:07Phil: You know…
- 57:10Phil: Well, I can tell you, I will definitely give that, graphic novel a shot, checking it out below.
- 57:14Phil: Right now.
- 57:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the graphic novel… and again, it's one…
- 57:21Tad Eggleston: And I've discovered I'm a little bit of a rarity on this. I love things that…
- 57:29Tad Eggleston: You like the more you think about it?
- 57:33Tad Eggleston: Rather than just immediately read or watch and go, oh, that's really cool!
- 57:37Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah. It's… it's one that you gotta…
- 57:40Phil: You gotta dissect a little bit?
- 57:42Tad Eggleston: you gotta dig in, you gotta go, why are we doing this? How does this connect? Okay. But…
- 57:51Tad Eggleston: I think… It's totally worth the journey.
- 57:55Tad Eggleston: So anyway, the last collection we're gonna talk about, new to order right now, is the Mobius Library, The Depressed Hunter.
- 58:04Tad Eggleston: Out from Dark Horse, obviously written and drawn by Mobius, translated by Diana Schutz.
- 58:12Tad Eggleston: In this graphic novel prequel to The Major, Mobius' Major Grubert finds himself attempting to chase away the blues by getting into a surreal adventure. Taking a vacation to the airtight garage to clear his mind, Grubert walks straight into an assassination plot. His own.
- 58:31Tad Eggleston: As the Major goes undercover, the late, great French master cartoonist Mobius returns to form here in The Depressed Hunter, taking readers into the intricate world of the Major's dreams and nightmares.
- 58:43Tad Eggleston: With the lush, exquisite pen and ink work for which the author is best known, another intensely psychedelic adventure that only Mobius could take us on.
- 58:53Tad Eggleston: This is… Final order cutoff of March 9th in stores June 9th.
- 59:00Tad Eggleston: From Dark Horse Comics, and I love me some Mobius, I love me some airtight Garage. I recommend this highly.
- 59:10Tad Eggleston: So…
- 59:12Tad Eggleston: That all being said, final order cutoff this week for Monday, February 2nd. We have Bitchy, The Exasperating Existence of Midge McCracken from Roberta Gregory at Fanta Graphics. We have The Book of Murmurs from Candace Perwin, also at Fanta Graphics. Comics!
- 59:31Tad Eggleston: the magazine, edited by Adam Freeman, with the art direction by Rico Renzi at Prada.
- 59:38Tyler Johnson: If my name was Adam, I would change it to ATOM. It's awesome.
- 59:43Tad Eggleston: Crazy for you from Paul Theroux and Steve Lafler at Fan & Graphics, he rolled me up like a grilled squid from Yoshiharu Sugi at Drawn and Quarterly. I got it.
- 59:53Phil: I gotta get that one.
- 59:54Tad Eggleston: Is Ted okay?
- 59:56Tyler Johnson: Just from the title.
- 59:57Tad Eggleston: From Dave Chisholm at Mad Cave. Nick…
- 1:00:00Tyler Johnson: I thought you said, is Tad okay? And I'm like, no.
- 1:00:03Tad Eggleston: Is Ted? No, he's not. Is Ted okay? No, I'm not.
- 1:00:06Phil: He's not gonna be okay if we keep interrupting him.
- 1:00:08Tad Eggleston: Is Ted OK, number one, from Dave Chisholm at Mad Cave. Nectar, number one, from Jeremy Robinson, and Anna Paula Martello, and Francesco Francini at Vault Comics. The Peril of the Brutal Dark, an Ezra Cain Mystery.
- 1:00:25Tad Eggleston: Number 1, from Chris Condon, and wait for it, wait for it… Jacob Phillips.
- 1:00:31Phil: Who's that guy? Steve Vertigo. I've never heard of that guy before. Who's that guy?
- 1:00:35Tad Eggleston: Vincent van Gogh, Sadness Will Last Forever from Francisco Borilli and Sokka at Mad Cave, Becca Chialo.
- 1:00:44Tad Eggleston: Currently crowdfunding, we have Epic, the Super Team action comedy from Tyler James and Matt Zolman at Comics Tribe, is on Kickstarter through January 31st. Negative Burn, the anthology from Joe Pruitt et al, is on Zoop through February 5th. Leaded Gasoline, a grindhouse horror comic from
- 1:01:04Tad Eggleston: Patrick Kindland and Lorenzo Ray, Halo 8 on Kickstarter through February 6th, Growing Up on the Spectrum from Tess Langston at Oneshy Press on Kickstarter through February 12th. Sink Your Teet In, number one.
- 1:01:19Phil: Teeth. Sorry, teeth.
- 1:01:21Phil: My bad.
- 1:01:21Tad Eggleston: I'm glad you threw this in, because I meant to and didn't get to it. From Zoe Tunnell, Lauren Knight, JP Jordan, Jody Troutman at Deathline Comics on Kickstarter through February 19th, and 100 FAQs on…
- 1:01:39Tad Eggleston: making comics from Shelley Bond and Philip Bond at Off-Register Press on Kickstarter through February 22nd. And Phil, thank you for updating my list, because I had intended to add both of those and neglected to.
- 1:01:55Tad Eggleston: I've even backed one of them, and intend to back the other.
- 1:01:59Phil: I really need to bag both of those, honestly.
- 1:02:02Tad Eggleston: I've also already reached out… already reached out to one of them, and intend to reach out to the other.
- 1:02:09Phil: Nice!
- 1:02:14Tad Eggleston: And still on Humble Bundle is the Dynamite Character Crossover Comics, $18 for 57 items. As I reiterate from last week, you know, go check it out, because sometimes the items are a single issue, and sometimes the items are
- 1:02:32Tad Eggleston: 8 omnibuses?
- 1:02:35Tad Eggleston: So… Their definition of item is a little weird.
- 1:02:41Phil: I mean, a multi-voluted omnibus is already a little weird.
- 1:02:45Tyler Johnson: That's good. Not really an omnibus, then, is it?
- 1:02:48Phil: Right?
- 1:02:51Tad Eggleston: Well, no, what I mean is, is, is, like…
- 1:02:55Tad Eggleston: in terms of… and I know from experience, like, when you…
- 1:03:00Tad Eggleston: When you buy it and you get to download it, it will download as 7 separate
- 1:03:05Tad Eggleston: omnibuses, but in terms of the items that they're talking about you buying, they group them all together as…
- 1:03:14Phil: Yeah, that's.
- 1:03:14Tad Eggleston: Vampirella Omnibus, volumes 1 through 7.
- 1:03:20Tad Eggleston: His one item.
- 1:03:22Phil: Quite, quite the variance in what makes an item go.
- 1:03:25Tad Eggleston: Elvira meets…
- 1:03:27Tad Eggleston: I don't actually think the Elvira Harley Quinn is included yet, but we'll say, for example, Elvira meets Harley Quinn is… number one is one item, and number two is a second item.
- 1:03:41Tyler Johnson: That's so funny.
- 1:03:42Phil: Oh… Who… who knows? Who knows why?
- 1:03:46Tad Eggleston: Hey, hey.
- 1:03:47Phil: I have one wife.
- 1:03:48Tad Eggleston: So, now we finally get to… hey, only an hour in, not bad.
- 1:03:54Tad Eggleston: About an hour in, we're all ready to 3 amazing books. We're tightening up, Tyler. We're getting back to where we used to be when you were around. This is why you need to be here, Tyler.
- 1:04:05Tad Eggleston: We, we…
- 1:04:06Phil: We go forever. Indulge in the… in all the tangents. As you heard, we had a couple pretty indulgent tangents. Yeah, we don't…
- 1:04:14Tad Eggleston: We don't have anybody saying, I need to get going soon.
- 1:04:18Tyler Johnson: Alright, well, with that said, I'd like to be off by, like, 10.15. Okay.
- 1:04:23Tad Eggleston: That's good.
- 1:04:24Tyler Johnson: That's possible.
- 1:04:24Phil: I think it is. I think it is.
- 1:04:26Tad Eggleston: You could make it.
- 1:04:26Phil: It is.
- 1:04:27Tyler Johnson: Okay, okay.
- 1:04:28Tad Eggleston: Particularly because I'm not gonna say anything about my top book right now, because.
- 1:04:34Tyler Johnson: Oh, you're talking about, yeah, there's.
- 1:04:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah. My top amazing book of the week, and, like, frontrunner for…
- 1:04:44Tad Eggleston: best single issue of the year is Assorted Crisis Events No. 8 by Dennis Camp and Eric Zawitzki at Image Comics. Now, here… here is the funny thing, Phil.
- 1:04:55Phil: Yeah.
- 1:04:55Tad Eggleston: Remember how I cheated last week, and I had two different Matt Kink books, and now I…
- 1:05:00Tad Eggleston: I… now I only have one of them in this spot, and part of that is I haven't actually gotten to the other one.
- 1:05:06Tyler Johnson: other…
- 1:05:07Tad Eggleston: Part of that is… I always… That's…
- 1:05:11Phil: Whatever it was.
- 1:05:11Tad Eggleston: I almost put this in front of a sorter crisis fence.
- 1:05:15Tyler Johnson: Oh, wow.
- 1:05:15Phil: I mean, I remember from what you've mentioned that that book sounds, the premise is incredible, so… It is, it is. I didn't… I'm just… I was saying, there's Longergan?
- 1:05:24Phil: Well, that's…
- 1:05:25Tad Eggleston: That's the thing, is last week, I knew that it was only Juan Jose Ripp.
- 1:05:30Tad Eggleston: But what… it's actually a selection of… Vignettes.
- 1:05:35Phil: Oh, wow.
- 1:05:38Tad Eggleston: And one of them's by Cano, and one of them's by Lonergan, and the reason that it still came in in the 2 slot is I realized that if you took the Lonergan away…
- 1:05:47Tad Eggleston: There's no way I would put it in front of assorted Crisis Events.
- 1:05:51Phil: I see.
- 1:05:52Tad Eggleston: It might still be my two for the week. Sure, sure. But there's no way I would put it in front of the Sorted Crisis events. But, I will say right now that if we decide to do the category of best short story, as in Best Story in a comedy.
- 1:06:08Phil: Sure.
- 1:06:08Tad Eggleston: Gorder than a whole one-shot.
- 1:06:11Phil: Huh.
- 1:06:11Tad Eggleston: Which, there are a lot more anthology comics lately, that's a legitimate category.
- 1:06:15Phil: I can see that, yeah.
- 1:06:17Tad Eggleston: Jesse Lonergan's story in this book will be… in the running for my best… It was… I mean, it was everything that Matt Kent does well, and everything that Jesse Lonergan does well, thrown together.
- 1:06:32Tad Eggleston: And just… I don't even remember how many pages it was, like, 6 or 8 pages. A heck of a combo, for sure. Absolute.
- 1:06:39Tad Eggleston: Perfection.
- 1:06:40Phil: Nice.
- 1:06:42Tad Eggleston: And then American Caper number 3 from Dan Houser, Laszlo, David Lapham, and Chris Anderson, continues to just be…
- 1:06:49Tad Eggleston: Awesome. Are you certain, Tyler, that your former business partner isn't a Mormon hitman?
- 1:06:56Tyler Johnson: Pretty positive, yup. Although he does, he, he, you know, he is a gun-toting nutbag, so that…
- 1:07:05Tyler Johnson: That fits.
- 1:07:08Tad Eggleston: While he didn't figure…
- 1:07:10Tad Eggleston: prominently in issue 3, there is a Mormon hitman in this, and he's kind of a reluctant hitman, you know? He does it because his spiritual leader will guide him to the people he needs to whack.
- 1:07:29Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:07:32Tad Eggleston: So, I mean… Maybe that's what happened. Maybe you're… you're… you're…
- 1:07:39Tad Eggleston: And I hope he doesn't listen to this podcast, because I'm sure…
- 1:07:42Phil: Oh, God, Rollhorns.
- 1:07:43Tad Eggleston: And I don't…
- 1:07:44Tyler Johnson: Oh, no, no, no.
- 1:07:45Phil: We swear!
- 1:07:46Tad Eggleston: Oh, you're randomly podcast, dang it.
- 1:07:47Tyler Johnson: You're wrong. Tad, you're wrong on two counts. He does not listen to this podcast, and he is not a wonderful person.
- 1:07:54Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:07:55Phil: Boom.
- 1:07:56Tyler Johnson: There you go.
- 1:07:57Tad Eggleston: We're good. Well, you know him, so it's less likely to wind up in a libel suit against you. I have to be careful.
- 1:08:06Tyler Johnson: I, yeah, like I said.
- 1:08:08Tad Eggleston: But I'm now also wondering, as I think about it, if what happened is he read the first couple of issues of American Caper, and that's what made him think that… that he was moved… He needs a new line of work. …in the business.
- 1:08:21Phil: Interesting. Fascinating.
- 1:08:23Tyler Johnson: this… I know, this is crazy, but he's never read a comic book. Like you said, he's in it… he is in it for… because he thinks it would be a cash grab.
- 1:08:32Phil: Oh, my, this is like…
- 1:08:33Tyler Johnson: He didn't know the industry at all. When we're off of the… when we're off the air, I will tell you about an argument we had about selling online.
- 1:08:41Phil: Boy.
- 1:08:41Tyler Johnson: He's completely clueless about how anything works.
- 1:08:44Phil: Okay, then. That, yeah, well…
- 1:08:46Tad Eggleston: Yoki.
- 1:08:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that's like…
- 1:08:48Phil: After high school, I had a friend of a friend who wanted to start writing novels, but he hadn't read a full book since middle school, and I was like, dude.
- 1:08:55Tad Eggleston: Cool.
- 1:08:55Phil: Change that.
- 1:08:56Tad Eggleston: Okay, so, so what you're saying is he's a white man, so he's qualified?
- 1:09:02Phil: Oh, sorry, sorry, your guy, yes, my guy, no.
- 1:09:06Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 1:09:07Phil: Yeah. But still.
- 1:09:09Tad Eggleston: No, I was… yeah, I was talking about Tyler Sky.
- 1:09:11Phil: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:11Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yes, that's exactly right.
- 1:09:13Tad Eggleston: Is this where I go to, like…
- 1:09:16Tad Eggleston: the absolute absurdity of lines like, whatever nut job it was that said, I'm on a plane, and I see a black pilot, and I feel unsafe because.
- 1:09:27Phil: Oh my god.
- 1:09:27Tad Eggleston: if he's a diversity hire, it's like…
- 1:09:31Tad Eggleston: Oh, I think… If there are diversity hires, they're the white guys. Yeah.
- 1:09:36Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 1:09:37Tad Eggleston: If it, if there are people here.
- 1:09:40Tyler Johnson: I'm pretty sure it was Pete Higgseth that said that.
- 1:09:43Phil: Was it Hexeth? I thought it was, like, Ben Shapiro, but whatever. Whoever it was.
- 1:09:48Phil: I'm a terrible person, you know?
- 1:09:51Phil: That's…
- 1:09:52Tad Eggleston: It's like, no, no, the people who are in jobs that they didn't earn are almost exclusively white.
- 1:10:00Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:10:01Phil: with connections.
- 1:10:03Tad Eggleston: Because the colored people don't have the connections.
- 1:10:07Phil: Exactly. Exactly. Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:10Tad Eggleston: Not across the board, there are exceptions to the rules.
- 1:10:13Phil: Yeah.
- 1:10:13Tad Eggleston: But…
- 1:10:14Phil: Yeah.
- 1:10:15Tad Eggleston: Take a walk, Phil.
- 1:10:16Phil: Oh, I'm walking here. You know, this is where I, I, as you were reminding me of the Mormon hitman whose religious leader was telling him who to kill, I… I was evoked with, connections to From Hell.
- 1:10:33Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean… Yeah, you know, it's there, it's there.
- 1:10:37Phil: Which I… I am reading, hopefully fast enough, we will see. But, this was also a week for The Power Fantasy No. 15. If you are reading that book, I hope you enjoyed it as well.
- 1:10:49Phil: it, yeah, it was a hell of an issue. It was… oh, wow, yeah, hell of an issue. But yeah, this is where I'll just… I'll just ramble to, in a book that I have otherwise been
- 1:11:01Phil: shocked and amazed and terrified by. I had a cackling laugh last night that my wife asked me about, and that was the exchange of a…
- 1:11:12Phil: Dr. William Gole talking to his cabbie driver in the streets of London after they'd been going all around the city tracing the, occult workings, and he said.
- 1:11:22Phil: You realize that I only share these private thoughts in recognition of your lack of cognizance? Why, thank you, sir. I can't say what that means to me.
- 1:11:34Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 1:11:35Phil: Yep.
- 1:11:37Phil: So, Ted, did you read any, One Piece this week?
- 1:11:40Tad Eggleston: I read no One Piece and no.
- 1:11:42Tyler Johnson: God for hell does not count as me.
- 1:11:44Tad Eggleston: That was… That was a joke.
- 1:11:46Phil: black and white. It was absolutely insane.
- 1:11:48Tad Eggleston: And particularly because I'm gonna have it out tomorrow.
- 1:11:53Phil: -H.
- 1:11:54Tad Eggleston: I don't think the black and white is the best version.
- 1:11:57Phil: It's interesting, having not seen the color version, the workings of the black and white, I can't imagine wanting to rework some of these panels years later, you know?
- 1:12:07Tad Eggleston: I mean, he didn't rework rework, he… like, if you were really paying attention, there's some muddy inking.
- 1:12:16Phil: Oh, yeah. Yeah. No, I see the muddy inking, I see there's…
- 1:12:20Tad Eggleston: sharpened that.
- 1:12:21Phil: Sharpened the muddiness?
- 1:12:25Tad Eggleston: The, the, the parts that weren't intentionally muddy? Yeah.
- 1:12:28Phil: Okay. Okay. The non-intentional muddiness. And I mean, it's… I don't know! I mean…
- 1:12:35Tad Eggleston: He crisped some of the inkings, and he colored it.
- 1:12:39Tad Eggleston: We're talking, like, almost Jacob Phillips-level coloring.
- 1:12:43Phil: Yeah, and it's not… it's not the color aspect that… that is…
- 1:12:47Phil: that I'm against, although it is also a book that is very concerned with lighting, and I do think that the starkness of, you know.
- 1:12:55Phil: Darkness, darkness solid, darkness scribbled, those variations of the linework, like, that's part of what's so incredible about this.
- 1:13:02Tad Eggleston: while I don't disagree with you,
- 1:13:07Tad Eggleston: I don't know many bigger students of comics than… than… Eddie Campbell?
- 1:13:13Phil: Yeah?
- 1:13:13Tad Eggleston: And he doesn't disagree with you either, and it doesn't go away just because he colored it.
- 1:13:19Phil: Okay. That's true. That's true. It's a good point. You know, I…
- 1:13:23Tad Eggleston: Like, this is… this is a guy who knows his shit.
- 1:13:27Phil: Yeah.
- 1:13:30Tad Eggleston: This is… this was not a cash grab, they had to talk people into it.
- 1:13:35Phil: Okay.
- 1:13:37Tad Eggleston: In fact, I'm not certain they've actually made money on it yet.
- 1:13:41Phil: Fascinating. I mean, it's… honestly, I'm loving it so much that, I… at the very least, I might check out a colored edition from the library and see if it's… see if it's worth picking up as well.
- 1:13:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's… You know…
- 1:13:54Phil: But for the first time, Marie, I have to… I have to imagine first.
- 1:13:57Tad Eggleston: And that's fair. That's fair. I mean, I'd read it many, many times in black and white before I read it in color, and I've read it one more time in black and white since the first time I read it in color. That's when I decided that I think every time I read it going forward, it will be the color version.
- 1:14:14Tad Eggleston: So, I could see at some point, if I'm really in the mood and have the time, going kind of the page-by-page…
- 1:14:22Phil: Oh my goodness.
- 1:14:24Phil: the page-by-pa… there's… ugh. The transitions…
- 1:14:28Tad Eggleston: The page-by-page, both of them.
- 1:14:30Phil: Yeah, oh, oh, a side-by-side, page-by-page, yeah, that would be… I… I love games that spot the difference, so that would be… that would be astounding as well.
- 1:14:38Tad Eggleston: No, I wouldn't even… I don't think… I don't think I'd be, like, going nuts doing the Spot the Difference. I think… I think I'd more just be…
- 1:14:46Tad Eggleston: Trying to soak in the essence of both.
- 1:14:50Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense?
- 1:14:51Phil: It does, it does.
- 1:14:53Tad Eggleston: I mean, if they did it that way, I think there's a really good chance that, like, which one I read… which one I read the words in would go back and forth.
- 1:15:02Phil: Yeah, that sounds likely.
- 1:15:04Tad Eggleston: That sounds very likely. Hell, I'm doing something similar with… to that with,
- 1:15:13Tad Eggleston: They just kickstarted a colored version… a recolored version, because they were originally colored comics, but badly colored comics.
- 1:15:20Tad Eggleston: Of Alex Toth's Zorro, which was actually an adaptation of the Zorro… the Disney Zorro TV series.
- 1:15:30Phil: Fascinating.
- 1:15:31Tad Eggleston: But they also put out…
- 1:15:35Tad Eggleston: A restored version of the black and white.
- 1:15:38Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:15:40Phil: That does sound nice.
- 1:15:40Tad Eggleston: It's tomorrow's Pulp Blotter, and I've been kind of going back and forth.
- 1:15:45Tad Eggleston: Particularly the ones that I know were supposed to be in color, I want to see what they look like.
- 1:15:51Tad Eggleston: in the color that's… I think it's Villa Rubio got to do the color. He's kind of the master of fixing color.
- 1:15:57Phil: Oh, yeah, no, if he… if he does a recolor on something, I will definitely trust it, because, yeah, he knows his stuff.
- 1:16:03Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:16:04Tad Eggleston: So, anyway…
- 1:16:07Tad Eggleston: Back to my top amazing book, and our great responsibility, our frontrunner for the single issue of the year. This is the first time we've ever done this, where the great responsibility is literally going to be filled with spoilers. I actually even had my mom read the comic yesterday.
- 1:16:23Phil: Oh, okay.
- 1:16:24Tad Eggleston: I wouldn't have to deal with the spoilers.
- 1:16:26Phil: Nice.
- 1:16:28Phil: How… did she like it? Did she enjoy it?
- 1:16:30Tad Eggleston: I haven't actually talked to her much about it yet.
- 1:16:32Phil: Okay.
- 1:16:32Tad Eggleston: kinda… I kinda wanna wait… I mean, A, I was… Frantically getting ready
- 1:16:38Tad Eggleston: to be ready to record this morning. I had.
- 1:16:41Tad Eggleston: reading to do, I had…
- 1:16:46Tad Eggleston: she says that I just didn't want her to talk to me, and that's not true, because, like…
- 1:16:51Tad Eggleston: It's just not true.
- 1:16:53Phil: Yeah.
- 1:16:53Tyler Johnson: film.
- 1:16:54Phil: I can't imagine you not wanting to talk to your own mom.
- 1:16:57Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:16:58Phil: Yeah.
- 1:16:58Tad Eggleston: But yeah. So, I'm gonna let you guys talk about it first, cause I already kinda…
- 1:17:07Phil: Gotcha.
- 1:17:08Tad Eggleston: Got it a little bit last week.
- 1:17:10Tad Eggleston: But, but…
- 1:17:10Phil: Just my reminder.
- 1:17:12Tad Eggleston: This is… this is my, my quick reminder, spoilers, spoilers, spoilers ahead, go…
- 1:17:18Phil: You know?
- 1:17:20Tad Eggleston: issue number 8 of… of Assorted Crisis events from… from Dennis Camp and Eric Zawadzky.
- 1:17:28Phil: Oh yeah, I gotta say, the most startling thing about opening the issue, aside from, you know, that first line of, can you see me, was feeling the change in texture on the page, where it's… it's using, like, a newsprint,
- 1:17:48Phil: Instead of…
- 1:17:48Tad Eggleston: This is where… this is where I'm gonna, like, go back, and we're gonna thank…
- 1:17:53Tad Eggleston: Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips.
- 1:17:55Phil: Yeah.
- 1:17:56Tad Eggleston: because they did this with Enfield Gang.
- 1:18:00Tad Eggleston: And, like, I don't think anybody had really done this
- 1:18:04Tad Eggleston: In a while, certainly not in anything…
- 1:18:08Tad Eggleston: I mean, Santos sisters had, but… Okay.
- 1:18:11Tad Eggleston: But… Nothing… nothing anywhere near the mainstream had been done, like, Somebody pointed out
- 1:18:20Tad Eggleston: in a conversation that I was involved with to Condon that… that, like.
- 1:18:26Tad Eggleston: Brubaker and Phillips copied them for… for their… their… giant-sized criminal that they did recently, when they did it on the newsprint, and…
- 1:18:36Tad Eggleston: Chris was humble enough to say, I didn't say that.
- 1:18:40Tad Eggleston: But thank you, and I do, I give them a lot of credit. It had been a long time since we saw.
- 1:18:48Phil: Yeah.
- 1:18:48Tad Eggleston: Newsprint Comics.
- 1:18:50Phil: So was all of Enfield gang like that, or did they just, like…
- 1:18:53Tad Eggleston: not only is all of Enfield gang like that, but Enfield trade.
- 1:18:58Phil: Oh!
- 1:19:00Tad Eggleston: is, like…
- 1:19:00Phil: Exciting.
- 1:19:03Tad Eggleston: It's a heavier-duty newsprint than, like, old comics, but it's still very much newsprint with the same kind of color bleed and…
- 1:19:12Phil: Whatnot.
- 1:19:12Phil: I am… I actually… I think I like… it took me a bit to settle on this, but I do think I like this more than the gloss, just because of that… that softness of the texture, being able to, like.
- 1:19:27Phil: look and see some of the dotting of the coloring. It's… I mean, like, part of why I love reading
- 1:19:36Phil: The actual physical single-issue comics, and physical comics over digital all the time is because it has that, like, visceral experience to it.
- 1:19:46Phil: And in this one as well, there was so much gutter, so much white space, that at virtually every page turn, there were, you know, sort of the lightboxing effects of seeing the light shine through the page, to see a bit of the next page as you turn, like, a little preview hidden message.
- 1:20:06Phil: So many cool things going on.
- 1:20:08Tad Eggleston: toss in really quickly, though, that, like, as much as I agree with everything you just said, I declared it my frontrunner for the single issue of the year, when I only read it digitally.
- 1:20:19Phil: Wow.
- 1:20:21Phil: Yeah, that's a… that's a great point, too, that… that…
- 1:20:25Phil: Oh, that's a fun way to look at it, in that the digital version is like a preview, but then the physical comic is the full experience.
- 1:20:33Tad Eggleston: And I… I… like… and I know it's never your intent, but I never, ever want anybody to think that they're not part of the club if…
- 1:20:43Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:20:45Tad Eggleston: One circumstance or another makes it so they're… they're more… which is why I think it's also worth, like, really bringing out this book.
- 1:20:54Phil: Yes.
- 1:20:54Tad Eggleston: Even if you're a digital reader.
- 1:20:56Tad Eggleston: If you can put your hands on
- 1:20:58Tad Eggleston: This issue, physically, it's worth having in your collection.
- 1:21:03Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:21:04Tad Eggleston: I, I, I think, I think for a lot of books.
- 1:21:09Tad Eggleston: The difference is not nearly as…
- 1:21:14Phil: Agreed.
- 1:21:15Phil: Absolutely agreed. That, I mean, I, you know, I still read a good amount digitally, and there's… there are books that I still enjoy digitally, but I… I have absolutely been…
- 1:21:27Phil: it actually started, back in college, where I saw an article pointing out that the colors on Hellboy from Hell were richer in the digital edition than printed, and I thought at first, like, no way, that can't be true. But it is, and it's due to the nature of, you know, you're reading something on a backlit screen, it's always going to be richer.
- 1:21:47Tad Eggleston: Here is, like, we've talked about this a number of times, so Tyler, I know, has heard this from me. I think…
- 1:21:54Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I'm sure.
- 1:21:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah, you don't even know what I'm gonna say, but he's heard it, and that's just because I have scripts. Autistic…
- 1:22:04Tad Eggleston: Like… well…
- 1:22:10Tad Eggleston: those of us who understand comics really well know how important every job is, etc. I think the reason why
- 1:22:21Tad Eggleston: There winds up being a hierarchy is based on… The ability to make Or break a comic.
- 1:22:33Tad Eggleston: You know, writers have the absolute most control over making or breaking a comic.
- 1:22:42Tad Eggleston: Bad writing can very rarely be saved.
- 1:22:47Phil: Yeah.
- 1:22:48Tad Eggleston: Good writing can often overcome almost everything else.
- 1:22:53Phil: Yep.
- 1:22:54Tad Eggleston: Right after that is whoever's doing the page layouts.
- 1:22:58Phil: So we'll call them the penciler, the layout, whatever.
- 1:23:01Tad Eggleston: you know, Closely followed by whoever's finishing the pages.
- 1:23:07Tad Eggleston: Because if anything's gonna save a comic, It's… Gonna be the art.
- 1:23:17Tad Eggleston: and the art can absolutely break a comic.
- 1:23:23Phil: Yeah.
- 1:23:25Tad Eggleston: After that, it's the colorist. The colorist, I think in very, very, very rare cases can a colorist make a comic that you weren't gonna love already.
- 1:23:36Tad Eggleston: It can make it better, it can take a book that you like and turn it into a book that you love.
- 1:23:42Tad Eggleston: And I think it has more power to go the other way. It can take a book that you would have loved and turn it into a book that you like, or a book that you like, and turn it into a book that you can't read.
- 1:23:53Phil: Yeah.
- 1:23:53Tad Eggleston: And unfortunately, at that point, often the blame won't wind up going on the colorist.
- 1:23:59Phil: Yeah.
- 1:24:00Tad Eggleston: Letterers, it's even less so.
- 1:24:04Phil: It's funny, because I…
- 1:24:05Tad Eggleston: So, though I actually think that letters have way more ability to affect how much you like a book.
- 1:24:11Tad Eggleston: than anybody gives them credit for, even though it's nearly impossible for them to make you dislike a book.
- 1:24:18Phil: It's odd, because I've… I…
- 1:24:22Phil: it… I can't think of a specific example, but I'm getting to that point where bad lettering bothers me.
- 1:24:27Tad Eggleston: Oh, it bothers me too, and it…
- 1:24:30Tad Eggleston: But… but for the most part, the only lettering I view is bad lettering?
- 1:24:35Phil: Huh.
- 1:24:36Tad Eggleston: is unreadable lettering.
- 1:24:39Phil: Yeah, I mean, there's… there's… Certain font choices that look lifeless, you know?
- 1:24:47Tad Eggleston: No, absolutely, but I think of that as, like, meh lettering.
- 1:24:54Phil: Yeah. Admittedly, this was from a traditional publisher that was doing a graphic novel, so I was like, oh, you didn't… you didn't get a comic letterer to do this, you just got a graphic designer to do this.
- 1:25:04Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:25:05Tad Eggleston: Like, I notice it, but it's not a make or break. And I say all of this because that, to me, is where…
- 1:25:15Tad Eggleston: Digital versus physical comes in.
- 1:25:17Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:25:18Tad Eggleston: No book.
- 1:25:20Tad Eggleston: that you're gonna love digitally, and get the physical, and you're gonna hate it. There's no book that you're gonna…
- 1:25:28Phil: Love physically, and you're gonna look at it digitally and decide, oh, this is crap.
- 1:25:33Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 1:25:35Phil: It's…
- 1:25:36Tad Eggleston: The experience is different, the way the experience between seeing a movie in a giant megaplex versus on your phone is different.
- 1:25:46Tyler Johnson: Yo.
- 1:25:47Tad Eggleston: You know,
- 1:25:49Tad Eggleston: it's the delivery mechanism, not the medium, and while it's not without import, and I absolutely appreciate the people who consider it while they're creating.
- 1:26:00Phil: as clearly…
- 1:26:03Tad Eggleston: Camp and Zawitzki and their team did with this book.
- 1:26:06Phil: Blake.
- 1:26:07Tad Eggleston: I just… again, and part of this is, like, defensiveness. I've been on, you know, because I wound up being in…
- 1:26:15Tad Eggleston: Not necessarily an early adopter of, of…
- 1:26:19Tad Eggleston: digital books, but when I adopted them, I adopted them hard.
- 1:26:23Tad Eggleston: Not just digital comics, but digital pros before that, just because I have a tendency to jump between so many different things that, like, the difference between carrying a phone with a thousand books and carrying a 75-pound backpack…
- 1:26:39Tad Eggleston: Is a big deal.
- 1:26:41Phil: It is. It's pretty big. And this is where I'd also say that it is… as you say this, it is definitely a trade-off of, of mediums and devices, because when I do read digitally, it's on my phone. So it's a smaller screen than a physically printed book.
- 1:26:58Tyler Johnson: I won't do it on my phone, I can't read it.
- 1:27:00Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'll read some things on my phone, but this is actually why I invested in a comic-sized tablet. The only time I have to read small is if it's something that needs to be a two-page layout, and even then, it's… Yep.
- 1:27:18Phil: And that's where what you… what you lose for the digital edition in that, like, turn of the page and, like, feel of the paper, you gain in the ability to zoom in.
- 1:27:30Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 1:27:31Tad Eggleston: Yep. Well, and for that matter, it does add a level in that…
- 1:27:37Tad Eggleston: They can double the number of their page turn moments, if they choose.
- 1:27:40Phil: Yeah, that's true, too. That is true, too. You can have more suspense.
- 1:27:45Tad Eggleston: I know.
- 1:27:45Phil: So yeah, so, so, yes, thank you, Ted, I did not want to diminish digital reading. I mean, for that matter.
- 1:27:50Tad Eggleston: Even randomly, looking at the page that I'm at right now, this was designed for both digital and…
- 1:27:58Phil: I can see that too, yeah.
- 1:28:00Tad Eggleston: That is the bottom, the bottom corner is him proposing, and then the top corner of the next page is them having a fight.
- 1:28:10Phil: Yeah.
- 1:28:11Tad Eggleston: While the page flows overall, it flows as, like, their life…
- 1:28:16Tad Eggleston: From dating through pregnancy, and then him falling away from it.
- 1:28:20Phil: Right.
- 1:28:21Tad Eggleston: And actually, this is also the, please, I'm begging you, don't turn the page.
- 1:28:26Phil: I was gonna ask, did you, did you…
- 1:28:28Tad Eggleston: Oh my god.
- 1:28:29Phil: How… how… how long did it take you to turn that page?
- 1:28:33Tad Eggleston: A little bit.
- 1:28:34Phil: Me too.
- 1:28:35Tyler Johnson: A little bit. Yes. Yeah.
- 1:28:36Tad Eggleston: My mom actually looked up at me at that point and said, I'm turning the page.
- 1:28:40Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:28:40Tyler Johnson: I, it is, like, I, I just, like, had… ugh.
- 1:28:43Phil: Yeah, I… I can't They did not.
- 1:28:46Tad Eggleston: But, as I'm looking at it here.
- 1:28:51Tad Eggleston: It is a different experience when you finish and have a page turn, Between… The proposal and the fight.
- 1:29:01Tad Eggleston: Versus just an eye scroll up to the top of the next page.
- 1:29:04Phil: Yeah.
- 1:29:05Tad Eggleston: Which tells me that Dennis Camp and Eric Sawitzki are thinking of even more than I've been giving them credit for, because they're not just thinking about how it reads on this newsprint that they decided to make, they're thinking about how it reads digitally.
- 1:29:21Phil: And the physical read gives you the option of the non-traditional, okay, am I gonna read every open facing as a two-page spread? You know, like, kind of how the first issue encouraged us to, hey, you can read however you want, you know? Right.
- 1:29:37Phil: So yeah, and I mean, honestly, this one has enough two-page spreads that… Yeah, I mean, it's…
- 1:29:44Phil: Yeah, it's an all-timer, it's incredible. It includes more references to all-time great comics than I've seen in a single issue in a while.
- 1:29:56Phil: Like, just from diversity of references?
- 1:29:59Tad Eggleston: Tyler, I feel like I've dominated. Did you have…
- 1:30:03Tad Eggleston: Big thoughts, or just little thoughts?
- 1:30:06Tyler Johnson: Well, I just have thoughts on the… on the… maybe not just… just on issue 8, but on the series as a whole? That's fair. Excuse me.
- 1:30:14Tyler Johnson: It is, I'm not talking because my voice hurts, but, it's, it's incredible. I love, I love time travel, I love,
- 1:30:25Tyler Johnson: all of this stuff, right? When you see a caveman with a medieval knight, you're like.
- 1:30:31Phil: Huh.
- 1:30:32Tyler Johnson: holy crap, that's weird, but then it works, it's awesome, you know? To me, issue 8 is the best issue of the series so far, but at the same time, I've enjoyed it thoroughly throughout.
- 1:30:44Tad Eggleston: Oh, absolutely agree that there's…
- 1:30:48Tyler Johnson: The cover is amazing. I love the character in the.
- 1:30:50Tad Eggleston: gutter.
- 1:30:51Tyler Johnson: bad issue.
- 1:30:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:30:54Tad Eggleston: Of, correct, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:30:57Tyler Johnson: crisis events. No, I'm not… I'm keeping quiet because I don't feel well, but…
- 1:31:02Tad Eggleston: That's fair.
- 1:31:03Tad Eggleston: That's fair. I am gonna share…
- 1:31:06Tad Eggleston: I don't know if this is my… my…
- 1:31:09Tad Eggleston: favorite page, because there's so many pages that I love in this comic, but I am gonna pull up and show the page that, when I got to it, I went.
- 1:31:20Tad Eggleston: Oh, fuck, that's amazing, and this, this is one for the ages.
- 1:31:28Tad Eggleston: So, give me just a second.
- 1:31:34Tad Eggleston: Well, actually, let me…
- 1:31:35Phil: Yeah, I mean, it's… it's… I… I am genuinely, waiting, you know, gonna be very interested to see which one he chooses, because there are so many good pages. Any guesses?
- 1:31:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah, any guesses what.
- 1:31:47Phil: I'm excited.
- 1:31:48Tad Eggleston: I had it in the wrong viewer to share it properly, so you got a second.
- 1:31:52Phil: Is it the… the one with the, Astrilous polyp reference?
- 1:32:00Tad Eggleston: Tell me which one you think is the Sterios polyp reference, because I thought the coloring in general
- 1:32:06Tad Eggleston: Throughout a lot of it was an Asterios polyp reference.
- 1:32:10Phil: I mean specifically the one that, I guess I can show it to you, just this one, where on the bottom, on the bottom, row of panels, the style changes.
- 1:32:22Tad Eggleston: I… I… I love that one, and.
- 1:32:26Phil: Huh.
- 1:32:26Tad Eggleston: And… no.
- 1:32:28Phil: The toilet page is also an all-timer for me.
- 1:32:32Tad Eggleston: There you go.
- 1:32:33Phil: Yeah. The toilet paper.
- 1:32:35Tad Eggleston: There you go. It's pretty fucking good.
- 1:32:37Phil: safe.
- 1:32:37Tad Eggleston: everything was… was all, you know, great about, but when I saw this page, and here's the other thing, I…
- 1:32:47Tad Eggleston: I am not wired to automatically look for Easter eggs or references or whatnot.
- 1:32:54Phil: So…
- 1:32:56Tad Eggleston: At my first glance.
- 1:32:58Tad Eggleston: I looked at this and just thought it was a bunch of people on the toilet.
- 1:33:03Phil: Right?
- 1:33:03Tad Eggleston: It wasn't until I got to Superman, Flash.
- 1:33:08Phil: Legally, legally distinct Superman, with an upside-down S-Shield.
- 1:33:12Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:33:13Tad Eggleston: Superman, Flash, and Hulk down in the bottom corner, and then looped back to Captain America. They started looking, I'm like, oh my god, that's Wolverine.
- 1:33:24Phil: Yep. Fuck, man! Yep, yep, yep, yep. This reminds me, at a, at, at MorrisonCon, Chris Burnham did, sketches on, like, projected so we could watch.
- 1:33:36Tad Eggleston: I got to…
- 1:33:37Phil: it quickly, but… Yeah. But he, he drew…
- 1:33:40Tad Eggleston: I'm sitting here going, I knew that.
- 1:33:42Phil: Ha!
- 1:33:43Phil: Excellent. Wonderful.
- 1:33:45Tad Eggleston: I think I emphasize that it's just not what I look for first, so I almost always catch it.
- 1:33:52Phil: he drew… he drew a, Judge Dredd straining on the toilet, and it was… it… it was epic. It was… honestly, it belonged alongside this page.
- 1:34:02Tad Eggleston: So… so yeah, that… that was the point where I went, oh, this is… this is ju- not just a cool comic for me, for…
- 1:34:13Tad Eggleston: Like, this is the type that could randomly go into multiple printings just because.
- 1:34:20Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:34:20Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:34:22Phil: I mean, it… honestly, this one initially.
- 1:34:24Tad Eggleston: doesn't.
- 1:34:26Phil: It's hard to… hard to pick between the two.
- 1:34:27Tad Eggleston: Makes me sad, because it should.
- 1:34:30Phil: It really should. I mean, I hope that the series is… is…
- 1:34:35Tad Eggleston: It's going strong, and if anything.
- 1:34:37Phil: Picking up sales.
- 1:34:38Phil: Yeah, because it's… yeah, this is… this is one of those books that's… that's absolutely… I… I want… I want as much of this as the creators can give us. Thank you so much for every single issue. It's been an incredible ride. Well, and…
- 1:34:52Tad Eggleston: So many of the issues, it managed to hit all of the emotions.
- 1:34:55Phil: It did.
- 1:34:56Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:34:57Phil: Oh, the watching… I gotta say, the Zawitzki, who's already been…
- 1:35:03Phil: just… one of those… one of those talents that I'm like, how… how is this the first book of yours that I'm reading, and how are you this fucking good with this being the first book of yours that I'm reading? And watching him slowly descend, you know, into a Scott McCloud-esque figure with the large glasses, and then into…
- 1:35:23Phil: A stick figure, and just… just…
- 1:35:26Phil: I don't know how many times we can see A character we just met.
- 1:35:31Phil: And their life, like, tragically falling apart, existentially and physically simultaneously, and how many different ways they've conveyed that so strongly, and it still hits.
- 1:35:41Phil: It doesn't feel cheap, it doesn't feel, like, exploitative, or like, oh, they're just… this is just what they do. No, it still feels whole and original and unique every single time.
- 1:35:52Tyler Johnson: Yes, yep.
- 1:35:53Tad Eggleston: So, now I have to ask…
- 1:35:59Tad Eggleston: We've only got one artist in the room.
- 1:36:02Tad Eggleston: Tyler, did you follow the instructions on the last page?
- 1:36:06Tyler Johnson: No, I did not.
- 1:36:08Tad Eggleston: I think I'm gonna have to pass the book on to my wife.
- 1:36:13Tyler Johnson: I want to. I want to do it. That would be fun.
- 1:36:15Tad Eggleston: I want her to follow the instructions on the last page for me.
- 1:36:20Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:36:21Tyler Johnson: Just ask really nicely, hon, will you please do this?
- 1:36:25Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, where it's difficult is… is, like, this is a rollercoaster of… of an issue, and that… that could be hard for her, but I… I think that that last page will be even cooler if…
- 1:36:38Tad Eggleston: If it's, like… Please read this and finish by following the instructions on the last page.
- 1:36:44Tyler Johnson: Right, yep.
- 1:36:47Tad Eggleston: So, we'll see if she's willing to do that for me. I will, I will follow up in the future.
- 1:36:55Tad Eggleston: But we all have stuff going on today, so any last words on this amazing, amazing… artifact.
- 1:37:08Tyler Johnson: No, just keep reading it. Trade paperback is awesome. You know, it collects issues 1 through 5, I think?
- 1:37:15Phil: I thought it was 1 through 6. I think it's 5. Yeah, because 6 was the point, the extension point, yeah.
- 1:37:22Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay.
- 1:37:24Tyler Johnson: Yeah, so check out the trade, and then jump into the series, it's awesome.
- 1:37:28Tad Eggleston: Manhunter that was… was 6 for the first arc, then.
- 1:37:32Tyler Johnson: Yep, yep, yep, yep. I'm gonna buy that in trade. I've loved, the covers of Martian Manhunter, I just haven't read it. I mean, as an art guy, the covers are amazing.
- 1:37:42Tad Eggleston: It's another one that, like, particularly because you have access to an ordering system, you.
- 1:37:48Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:37:49Tad Eggleston: consider doing… single issues.
- 1:37:52Tyler Johnson: Oh, for sure. If for no other reason than the Martian vision.
- 1:37:57Tad Eggleston: At least sometimes the Martian vision requires you to hold the page up to the light so that you can see the bleed-through from the other side.
- 1:38:07Tad Eggleston: Oh, sure, sure, sure.
- 1:38:10Tyler Johnson: Are there…
- 1:38:10Tad Eggleston: I'm not certain I've ever seen where… where…
- 1:38:14Tad Eggleston: I mean, I've seen times where, like, there were Easter eggs that you got that way, or story enhancers that you got that way, but I think it's the first time I've ever seen a comic where they literally direct you to do that to make certain you don't miss the important…
- 1:38:31Phil: It's funny.
- 1:38:31Tad Eggleston: You have to do that to get…
- 1:38:35Phil: Is there ever a time where that was, like, messed with due to an ad being placed? You know, that's what I'm wondering.
- 1:38:42Tad Eggleston: In history?
- 1:38:43Phil: No, I'm not in history, because of course it's happened in history, but I mean, like, with Martian… Martian Manhunters specifically, or if they were good about playing.
- 1:38:50Tad Eggleston: I think an absolute… I think DC, at this point, has joined most publishers where the ads are at the end, unless they have a specific reason not to.
- 1:39:03Phil: Gotcha.
- 1:39:03Tad Eggleston: Like, the only reason I think that most publishers will put an ad in between
- 1:39:10Tad Eggleston: I think the only reason you'll get a one-page ad inside of a… inside of a story anymore is if, for whatever reason.
- 1:39:21Tad Eggleston: The creators can't find their way… Around a problem where…
- 1:39:29Tad Eggleston: They need the page flip to be here.
- 1:39:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah. And right now, spot.
- 1:39:36Phil: Yeah.
- 1:39:37Tad Eggleston: So it's essentially… I think most of the time, they only get used if they need a filler page for story purposes.
- 1:39:45Phil: Okay. See, I've… it's been long enough that I've read a DC or Marvel single issue that,
- 1:39:51Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:39:51Phil: Yeah, I just hadn't noticed that.
- 1:39:53Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:39:54Tad Eggleston: Right. Like, all the preview… I mean, they don't really do much in terms of, like, ad ads, it's mostly in-house ads at this point, too.
- 1:40:02Phil: Of course, yeah.
- 1:40:03Tad Eggleston: And it tends to be at the back of the book.
- 1:40:07Tad Eggleston: So… Alrighty.
- 1:40:10Tad Eggleston: since we gotta protect Tyler's voice, because he's gotta go, like, use it to sell shit.
- 1:40:17Tyler Johnson: Not today, I'm taking the day off.
- 1:40:20Tad Eggleston: Oh, you're not going in at all.
- 1:40:22Tyler Johnson: I'm gonna… I'm avoiding Chris.
- 1:40:24Tad Eggleston: I thought you were just able to go in late.
- 1:40:26Phil: It's worth the strategy, yeah.
- 1:40:28Tyler Johnson: Well, Chris is covering the store today, it's his, you know, last day.
- 1:40:32Tad Eggleston: Right, right. So…
- 1:40:33Tyler Johnson: I am…
- 1:40:34Tad Eggleston: I do recommend going in at some point, within an hour of closing, just…
- 1:40:40Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:40:41Tad Eggleston: certain that, like.
- 1:40:42Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:40:43Tad Eggleston: All the money stays.
- 1:40:44Tyler Johnson: Yep, exactly. Well, we're not done. We haven't signed anything.
- 1:40:48Tyler Johnson: Till Friday, so…
- 1:40:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:40:52Tad Eggleston: So.
- 1:40:53Tyler Johnson: So I really have no… I mean, we are still 50-50 partners till Friday. Right.
- 1:40:58Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:40:58Tyler Johnson: So, I mean, I really can't stop him from doing anything, in the store.
- 1:41:04Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:41:05Tyler Johnson: So, I just have to, you know, give him the benefit of the doubt, and, you know, he… he wants to be…
- 1:41:11Tad Eggleston: Mostly a joke.
- 1:41:12Phil: Yo.
- 1:41:13Tyler Johnson: He wants to collect his personal stuff that's there. Yeah, totally cool.
- 1:41:18Tad Eggleston: Right. Yep. So…
- 1:41:19Tyler Johnson: So, I mean, I'm irritated, but I'm not a dick, you know what I mean? No!
- 1:41:25Tad Eggleston: So, so anyway, books we hope, or books I hope will be spectacular. I still have it as B. Like, that's my wishful thinking, Tyler.
- 1:41:34Phil: the Royals.
- 1:41:34Tyler Johnson: We'll get… we'll get back to it. We'll get back to it. I also hope these books will be spectacular.
- 1:41:40Tad Eggleston: Speaking of absolute Martian Manhunter…
- 1:41:45Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:41:46Tad Eggleston: Absolute Martian Manager number 8 from Dennis Camp, and Javier Rodriguez comes out this week, as does Astro Quantum No. 1 from Andrea Moody and Arturo Fabra at Mad Cave. This is like a sci-fi Moby Dick, is what I've heard. I am very much looking forward to it, particularly.
- 1:42:06Tyler Johnson: Number 3 on your list, Ed, is the one I'm most looking forward to.
- 1:42:10Tad Eggleston: Russell Heist No. 2 from Kyle Starks at.
- 1:42:13Tyler Johnson: It's so funny.
- 1:42:14Tad Eggleston: number one was so great. I love Kyle, period.
- 1:42:17Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 1:42:18Tad Eggleston: I'm… I'm… I'm…
- 1:42:19Tad Eggleston: I might be reading it today, I might, I might, image might have, hold up.
- 1:42:25Tyler Johnson: So, guys, right here, I have all of mine in my cute little lunar box.
- 1:42:31Phil: Nice.
- 1:42:31Tyler Johnson: So, yes, mine is here.
- 1:42:34Tad Eggleston: Oh, so yeah, you might be reading the physical copy today.
- 1:42:37Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I… I could read it, yeah.
- 1:42:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:42:40Tyler Johnson: I have it, I have it in the box. It will be going home with me after I put it in my computer and whatnot, you know.
- 1:42:45Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 1:42:46Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, I, those, those are my 3 for the week, so…
- 1:42:51Tyler Johnson: That's awesome.
- 1:42:52Tad Eggleston: your,
- 1:42:52Tyler Johnson: They are good ones.
- 1:42:53Tad Eggleston: What's your… what's your… what's your giant-sized trade waiter?
- 1:42:57Tyler Johnson: My John's Fast Traderator for this week is The Seasons, Volume 2 by Rick Remender, Paul Asita, Matt Lopes, and Russ Woot.
- 1:43:05Tyler Johnson: You just got that copy as well, because I'm like, yes, it came yesterday, I'm like, sweet.
- 1:43:11Tad Eggleston: Volume 1? We read Volume 1, it's so good.
- 1:43:14Phil: It is really good. I'm excited to read Volume 2, you know, in true trade-waiting fashion. I also noticed that,
- 1:43:21Phil: It looks like with the,
- 1:43:25Phil: you know, I think each trade is only gonna be 4 issues, like, 4 seasons, and it looks like they're shifting the cycle
- 1:43:32Phil: Each time, so, like, you know…
- 1:43:34Tyler Johnson: I think so, yeah.
- 1:43:35Phil: This… the first volume, it started on spring. Volume 2 starts on Summer. It looks like Volume 3 is gonna start on Fall.
- 1:43:43Tyler Johnson: And then, yeah, they just start a little bit later, and then go.
- 1:43:45Phil: Yeah, so I wonder… I wonder if it's gonna end up being, like, a 16-issue series, or if it's gonna keep going, who knows? But but yeah, I'm excited to read it. The Volume 1 was… Volume 1 was great, Volume 2 is gonna pick up mid-action, so… it sounds fun.
- 1:44:01Tyler Johnson: Do you physically own a lot of trade paperbacks and graphic novels?
- 1:44:06Phil: And how do you store them? So… I am slightly feral. I think I own a lot more single issues than I do trade paperbacks and graphic novels. Sure, sure. But these days, I have been picking up more things in graphic novel form, and I love…
- 1:44:23Tyler Johnson: The hardcovers of stuff.
- 1:44:26Tyler Johnson: Me too.
- 1:44:27Phil: Yeah.
- 1:44:28Phil: Storage-wise, it's still kind of all over the place. I have,
- 1:44:33Phil: Several, several short boxes full of unbagged and boarded issues, and a couple shelves here and there with stuff on them, but .
- 1:44:41Tyler Johnson: you know.
- 1:44:41Phil: since we're still in an apartment, there's not quite a book reading room yet that I would love to have one day.
- 1:44:47Tad Eggleston: Keeping up with the storage is always an issue for those of us who love comics.
- 1:44:53Phil: Yep. Yep. I actually, for the first time, I tried a technique that you… that I heard you say you've done. I gave my single issues of dye away to a co-worker who will hopefully become a friend, because I have the hardcover of that. So, I might start doing that a little more for books that I have hardcover set.
- 1:45:09Tad Eggleston: I'm… I'm more co… I've done that some. I am… I more commonly give…
- 1:45:18Tad Eggleston: the original trade away when I buy the hardcover.
- 1:45:22Phil: Yeah.
- 1:45:23Phil: Yeah.
- 1:45:24Tad Eggleston: Coming up the singles is hard.
- 1:45:25Phil: It is!
- 1:45:26Tad Eggleston: Done it. Yeah. Done it.
- 1:45:28Phil: I was okay… I was okay with it for Die, because I knew the back matter was in the hardcover, you know? There might be, you know, minus maybe one or two essays from Gillen, but I've… I've, you know, I read… I read them all, so yeah.
- 1:45:43Phil: Yeah.
- 1:45:46Tad Eggleston: Alright, Tyler.
- 1:45:47Tyler Johnson: All right, guys, this has been awesome. We appreciate you guys listening. I was on my phone, so when you said Tyler… when you said Tyler, I assumed that meant, let's wrap it up, so I'm like.
- 1:45:57Phil: Yep.
- 1:45:58Tyler Johnson: That's been awesome. Tad, what episode number is this, did we say?
- 1:46:03Tad Eggleston: This is episode number 220, and I should remember…
- 1:46:06Tyler Johnson: 2 points.
- 1:46:07Tad Eggleston: to say, Subscribe, rate, and review.
- 1:46:12Tad Eggleston: Give us money at patreon.com. Give us money.
- 1:46:15Tad Eggleston: slash 22Panels. Yeah. One of these days, we'll set up a Ko-Fi account. I'm all for giving us money.
- 1:46:23Tad Eggleston: And, Go-to…
- 1:46:27Tad Eggleston: the… well, no, that… I mean, yeah, go to the Nexus Vault in modern age, but I realize I'm gonna be dropping in the ad for that after…
- 1:46:36Tyler Johnson: In 2 seconds, yep. Yup.
- 1:46:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:46:39Tyler Johnson: Alright guys, we will catch you after the next page.
- 1:46:43Tyler Johnson: See ya.
