- 0:01Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald is our Broncos insider Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 0:05Speaker 1: two five Pro Football. The insider I've covered the while.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Jeff Legwall, He's the balloon popper.
- 0:12Speaker 3: He doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 1: i BDW Local sixty eight. Start with the chomp and
- 0:19Speaker 1: with the career. Dave's Leggy on Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 0:25Speaker 1: two five. Yeah, let's get right after it. Jeff Legwald
- 0:33Speaker 1: is with us on a Monday to talk about these
- 0:35Speaker 1: five and three Denver Broncos getting set to go to
- 0:38Speaker 1: Baltimore this week twenty eight to fourteen. They knock off
- 0:41Speaker 1: Carolina yesterday as Bowe Nicks plays his best game in
- 0:45Speaker 1: an NFL uniform, two hundred and eighty four yards, three touchdowns,
- 0:49Speaker 1: no picks, and a rushing touchdown to boot Uh Leggy.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Let's let's start game plan wise. You take a look
- 0:57Speaker 1: at that box score at halftime yesterday, Nicks twenty seven
- 1:00Speaker 1: attempts and pretty damn good twenty one to twenty seven
- 1:03Speaker 1: for two twenty and a couple of touchdowns. They only
- 1:05Speaker 1: ran the ball thirteen times in that first half. Run
- 1:08Speaker 1: game never really found its legs. Did John Payton see
- 1:13Speaker 1: him matchup yesterday where two things could be possible at once?
- 1:18Speaker 1: Number one, the Broncos could do some damage through the air,
- 1:21Speaker 1: and number two, Bo Knicks could maybe get a little
- 1:24Speaker 1: bit more comfortable in a pocket against a non existent
- 1:28Speaker 1: Panthers pass rush.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I think both those things are true, mate.
- 1:33Speaker 3: I mean, I think he even sort of alluded to
- 1:36Speaker 3: it after the game. He called it a confidence game
- 1:39Speaker 3: for the quarterback, and I think it was. I mean,
- 1:44Speaker 3: he had them dropped back what twenty nine times in
- 1:46Speaker 3: the first half alone, and I think that was with
- 1:50Speaker 3: the intent of, Okay, this is a good week where
- 1:54Speaker 3: he won't face many exotic looks in the pass rush.
- 1:59Speaker 3: He will get a pretty static look on defense, and
- 2:03Speaker 3: they have more team speed, you know, than the beleaguer
- 2:09Speaker 3: Panthers defense. He even said today that they felt like
- 2:12Speaker 3: they had a you know, a safety on the field
- 2:14Speaker 3: they could hit. His quote was that we could run by.
- 2:17Speaker 3: So they felt like this was a good matchup across
- 2:21Speaker 3: the board. And you know, I just I just look
- 2:24Speaker 3: at the damage he's done with bo Nicks against his
- 2:28Speaker 3: former NFC South teams. I mean it's you know, three
- 2:32Speaker 3: of their five wins are against the NFC South teams.
- 2:36Speaker 3: You know, you could argue Knicks's best three games, you know,
- 2:41Speaker 3: other than the moments in New Orleans when the ball
- 2:44Speaker 3: was not where he wanted it to go, but the team,
- 2:47Speaker 3: the offense's best moments are against those three teams. So
- 2:52Speaker 3: I think all those things are true, and I think
- 2:54Speaker 3: they got Nicks and the offense sort of in a
- 2:57Speaker 3: good space mentally to now go get to the heart
- 3:01Speaker 3: of matter now, you know, now it's about you know,
- 3:04Speaker 3: are you gonna get some wins and get yourself into
- 3:07Speaker 3: the wild card conversation.
- 3:10Speaker 1: By the way, Jeff eighty you mentioned those three games
- 3:13Speaker 1: against the NFC South, eighty seven to thirty one. The
- 3:16Speaker 1: Broncos have outscored those three teams, that being Tampa, New
- 3:19Speaker 1: Orleans and then Carolina yesterday. Familiarity, old grudges or is
- 3:26Speaker 1: it just that those three teams stink.
- 3:29Speaker 2: All of the above.
- 3:30Speaker 3: I think there's a reason, you know, there's a reason
- 3:33Speaker 3: Sean dominated them for so many years. I mean, Tampa
- 3:38Speaker 3: had some moments with Brady and you know, way back,
- 3:42Speaker 3: and you know, the Falcons had some moments when when
- 3:46Speaker 3: Kyle Shanahan was there, Matt Ryan's MVP season in Carolina.
- 3:50Speaker 3: You know, I had a couple of brief runs with
- 3:53Speaker 3: with Cam, you know, and I just think he owned
- 3:58Speaker 3: that division when he was Saints and he still owns
- 4:01Speaker 3: it as as Bronco coach.
- 4:04Speaker 4: All right, Jeff, what went into fixing the footwork?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Do you know?
- 4:07Speaker 4: Did they talk about that? Did he put in extra
- 4:09Speaker 4: work from the time off? I mean, was it just
- 4:11Speaker 4: the fact that there wasn't a pass rush? We've not
- 4:14Speaker 4: seen you talked about it a lot last week. We
- 4:16Speaker 4: haven't seen that kind of footwork in a game. And
- 4:19Speaker 4: I don't know all year, honestly, what went into that?
- 4:21Speaker 4: Do you know?
- 4:23Speaker 3: I think it was just an an unencumbered day, largely
- 4:27Speaker 3: in the pocket.
- 4:28Speaker 2: And they've they've gotten much better.
- 4:30Speaker 3: I mean, you're you're seeing some concessions on Sean Payton's
- 4:34Speaker 3: part to keep bo Nix and things he's very comfortable with.
- 4:39Speaker 3: So I think the two of those things together were
- 4:41Speaker 3: you know, his best day in his young career. Well,
- 4:45Speaker 3: and you know, really the Panthers offered little resistance in
- 4:50Speaker 3: the past rush.
- 4:51Speaker 2: It's been a long time since.
- 4:52Speaker 3: I've charted a game where an NFL team really decided
- 4:57Speaker 3: to just let the quarterback, you know, do whatever you
- 5:01Speaker 3: want and we'll try to tackle, you know, and I
- 5:04Speaker 3: maybe that's where they're at right now. But you know,
- 5:08Speaker 3: the Broncos did what you do. You know, it's you know,
- 5:10Speaker 3: there's no sympathy cards in the NFL. You know, you
- 5:13Speaker 3: play who's in front of you and you count up
- 5:16Speaker 3: the wins when the season's over. And the Broncos did
- 5:19Speaker 3: exactly what they should do. Dot you know, early on
- 5:24Speaker 3: it was that scenario you worry about, you know, early turnover,
- 5:29Speaker 3: Panthers score on a short field, they're up seven nothing briefly,
- 5:34Speaker 3: and you know it's a it's a bad day scenario.
- 5:37Speaker 3: But then you know they simply didn't have it enough
- 5:40Speaker 3: to stay in it. And and the Broncos took care
- 5:43Speaker 3: of business until the fumble late late in the game.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Okay, So, Leggy, I want to bounce two names off
- 5:51Speaker 1: of you for for Pro Bowl consideration for this Bronco team,
- 5:56Speaker 1: maybe even all Pro consideration.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Okay, Well, Zach Allen's one of them, because that's.
- 6:02Speaker 1: You know that, you know, Big number ninety nine is
- 6:05Speaker 1: on my list all right, And clearly Certan is gonna
- 6:08Speaker 1: get all the love. Another interception yesterday on an atrocious throat,
- 6:11Speaker 1: but still our guy just goes and makes plays and
- 6:13Speaker 1: had a nice return after that. Riley Dixon right now
- 6:19Speaker 1: has become a weapon for this team. You mentioned the
- 6:21Speaker 1: early turnover. They drop a pun at the one, and
- 6:26Speaker 1: that was the momentum changing play because then Bryce Young
- 6:28Speaker 1: is throwing from out of his own end zone. Right now,
- 6:31Speaker 1: this Bronco Special teams they have I believe, the best
- 6:34Speaker 1: field position differential in the entire NFL. They're getting elite
- 6:39Speaker 1: punting right now, Leggie.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that's that's one of those things you know,
- 6:45Speaker 3: special teams coaches stay up late at night worry about
- 6:48Speaker 3: We don't we don't talk about all of those things.
- 6:52Speaker 3: But the winning teams do those those things properly, you know.
- 6:58Speaker 3: And long ago that you know, there was this season
- 7:00Speaker 3: when the Broncos only Pro Bowl there was a punter.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I think Kuran one year was the only Pro bowler
- 7:05Speaker 3: the team had. But uh, now he's he's having that
- 7:09Speaker 3: kind of year and he's been far more consistent.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I think last year, you know that.
- 7:15Speaker 3: The special teams coaches and Peyton would sort of poke
- 7:18Speaker 3: at the consistency, you know, and they've they've they've had
- 7:22Speaker 3: him in a competition, you know, at times during Peyton's
- 7:25Speaker 3: tenure here and they've.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Done all those things.
- 7:28Speaker 3: But he's had easily his i think his most consistent
- 7:31Speaker 3: year here. And this isn't the easiest place to to
- 7:36Speaker 3: be the punter, you know, it's it's hard to place
- 7:38Speaker 3: the ball here. You don't you don't get the perfect conditions.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Some of the indoor guys too.
- 7:43Speaker 4: All right, I can't quite go off the old pro
- 7:47Speaker 4: theme with Nate there, but let me throw in another name.
- 7:50Speaker 4: And I've got to ask you, have you ever seen
- 7:52Speaker 4: a guy make an interception like Jakwan macmillan did yesterday
- 7:57Speaker 4: with the three sixty in the air. Looked like he
- 8:00Speaker 4: was jumping and recognized halfway up. Oh he's looking and
- 8:04Speaker 4: spun around for his pick. How good is he turning.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Out to be? All right? This is one of the
- 8:09Speaker 2: great finds. You know.
- 8:11Speaker 3: This is good you know, personnel, good draft work, to
- 8:15Speaker 3: find a guy who fits your system and then he
- 8:18Speaker 3: is you know, everything you hope he is in terms
- 8:22Speaker 3: of work, ethic and getting better. But he he's one
- 8:25Speaker 3: of the best nickel corners in the league. It's I
- 8:28Speaker 3: talk to people in the league every week who believe
- 8:32Speaker 3: when certain is on the field. You know, they are
- 8:35Speaker 3: the best secondary in football right now, and I think
- 8:39Speaker 3: they're proving it.
- 8:40Speaker 2: I mean, I think they're.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Number one in limiting past yardage per play. You know,
- 8:45Speaker 3: they're number two in sacks, They're I think they're first
- 8:50Speaker 3: in the red zone. I think they're or first their
- 8:53Speaker 3: second in the red zone. First in goal to goal situations.
- 8:56Speaker 3: I mean, they're they're defending at all levels right now,
- 9:00Speaker 3: and you cannot do that in today's NFL. And if
- 9:03Speaker 3: your secondary isn't doing it, and you certainly can't do it,
- 9:07Speaker 3: if he can't do it in the nickel, and they
- 9:10Speaker 3: defend great in the nickel because McMillan's a big reason
- 9:14Speaker 3: for that.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Talking to Jeff Legwald here on a Monday afternoon. Jeff
- 9:18Speaker 1: Legwald's appearance is brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 9:22Speaker 1: of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start with a
- 9:26Speaker 1: job and with the career, Jeff. Now it is on
- 9:29Speaker 1: to Baltimore. Ravens lost a weird one yesterday against the Browns.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Had a chance, by the way Kyle Hamilton could ended
- 9:37Speaker 1: that game yesterday dropped an easy interception, So kind of
- 9:40Speaker 1: a weird loss there for Baltimore. But John Payton knows
- 9:43Speaker 1: the quality of team that he is about to go
- 9:46Speaker 1: and have to play inside their own building right now.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Between keeping his foot on the gas late in that game,
- 9:54Speaker 1: running trick plays late, trying to keep the momentum going forward,
- 9:58Speaker 1: and then some of his postgame frustration with the way
- 10:01Speaker 1: that that game finished with his own team was that
- 10:05Speaker 1: Shawn's way of telling everybody, mind your p's and q's,
- 10:09Speaker 1: crank it up because things are about to get a
- 10:12Speaker 1: lot tougher for us.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I think it's all all of those things. He's always
- 10:16Speaker 3: said he finds it more difficult to coach after wins,
- 10:21Speaker 3: you know, And and I think he is just that's.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Just his nature.
- 10:26Speaker 3: And then and the late drive, a ninety eight yard
- 10:29Speaker 3: drive for all the good the defense has done this year,
- 10:31Speaker 3: and they have done the heavy lifting for this five
- 10:34Speaker 3: and three team, Uh, those are the kinds of drives
- 10:38Speaker 3: that get you beat in important games. And and that
- 10:42Speaker 3: that one should sting. And I, you know, all of
- 10:45Speaker 3: the defensive guys I talked to after the game, there
- 10:48Speaker 3: was very little sort of celebrating about a win. There
- 10:52Speaker 3: was a whole lot of that last Drive's gotta go
- 10:56Speaker 3: type of thing, and you know, I think it does,
- 10:59Speaker 3: and uh, because I think Peyton knows that this version
- 11:02Speaker 3: of the Ravens they surrender tons of big plays on
- 11:06Speaker 3: the defensive side. It's a very rare thing for them.
- 11:10Speaker 3: But UH, there's been an off lot of weeks this
- 11:13Speaker 3: year where they have they have surrendered the most big
- 11:18Speaker 3: plays defensively, and so you know that opportunity could be there.
- 11:24Speaker 3: But the flip side of that is they may have
- 11:26Speaker 3: two MVP candidates on offense, so your defense has to
- 11:31Speaker 3: get every possible stop it can uh to give you
- 11:35Speaker 3: the best chance.
- 11:36Speaker 2: And if you let them hold the ball, uh.
- 11:40Speaker 3: With Derrick, Henry and Lamar doing their thing, you're you're
- 11:45Speaker 3: asking for trouble and it won't matter how you know
- 11:48Speaker 3: how difficult the Ravens defense has found it to be,
- 11:51Speaker 3: because you won't get a crack at them if you
- 11:53Speaker 3: don't have the ball.
- 11:55Speaker 1: We will be previewing that matchup with Jeff Legwald on
- 11:58Speaker 1: Friday here on the Craig and Lindahl Show. Of course,
- 12:01Speaker 1: listening to them all week here on Altitude Sports Radio
- 12:03Speaker 1: ninety two five, Up and down the lineup, UH and
- 12:06Speaker 1: read his stuff ESPN dot Com watch him on ESPN
- 12:10Speaker 1: Jeff Flagwall, good work as always, buddy, Thank you, Thanks Bellows,
