- 0:05hey everyone
- 0:05welcome back we are on episode 7 of Melody's 15 years
- 0:10we're going 15 years through her cancer journey
- 0:12from 15 years ago to present day
- 0:15welcome melody
- 0:16thank you so much happy to be here
- 0:19awesome so in this episode
- 0:21we're gonna talk about anxiety
- 0:23depression asking for help
- 0:25we touched on therapy a little bit last time
- 0:27but we're gonna kind of
- 0:28get into some of the more specifics this time
- 0:30when do you know you need to ask for help
- 0:33what kinds of help there are
- 0:34so in your cancer journey
- 0:36when was the first time you knew that you needed help
- 0:39more so than just your family and friends
- 0:43it took me a long time to know that I needed help
- 0:46and to admit that I needed help
- 0:48I was probably two years into the journey um
- 0:52because I I wasn't handling it well
- 0:55um had marital problems
- 0:57my diagnosis was spilling over into the marriage
- 1:01so we started off with marriage counseling
- 1:03and that didn't go anywhere
- 1:05because
- 1:05it wasn't addressing my underlying issues of dealing
- 1:09with my cancer
- 1:10and it wasn't really addressing his underlying issues
- 1:13of of my cancer and the potential loss of
- 1:18of my life so it was about two years in that we really
- 1:24I got a program going
- 1:27and I'm sure that was hard to admit
- 1:29that you needed help where did you start
- 1:34um like
- 1:35well it was really kind of difficult to
- 1:38to to do that
- 1:40I had had a lot of therapy in my past
- 1:42so I wasn't opposed to it
- 1:45I know it was helpful
- 1:47but I kind of had to get forced into it
- 1:50um the things were just falling apart
- 1:53and when you when your life starts falling apart
- 1:57you get this kind of helpless feeling
- 1:58and you know you know
- 2:00you need more you need some
- 2:02some help and you ask this person and that person
- 2:05and you get the same happy response oh
- 2:08well you've gone through so much
- 2:09you'll be okay just give it some time
- 2:11you'll be fine but I never was fine
- 2:13I always felt like there was just something not right
- 2:17and those were kind of my warning signs
- 2:20when I was very reactive um
- 2:23I was very emotional uh
- 2:26I was also
- 2:27not enjoying the things that I used to love to do
- 2:31so with all of that it made things more difficult for
- 2:35for me to go on with my daily life
- 2:38because everything was just sad
- 2:40I was just sad all the time
- 2:42nothing was was happy and
- 2:44I was bringing other people around me
- 2:46down with my sadness
- 2:48and I knew that that was time when I had to fix me
- 2:53and I think we've come a long way in how
- 2:55as a society we look at therapy
- 2:58nowadays everyone's like
- 2:59I go to therapy just because I'm perfectly fine
- 3:01but I just wanna you know
- 3:02be proactive and it's
- 3:04therapy is everywhere now
- 3:05but back then that wasn't the case right
- 3:08no that was not the case
- 3:10if you were in therapy
- 3:11there was something really wrong with you
- 3:13and you didn't talk about it much because
- 3:17people look down on you what do you mean
- 3:18why can't you handle this all on your own
- 3:21why can't you be strong enough
- 3:22and I don't think
- 3:23it has anything to do with being strong enough
- 3:25it means that you know
- 3:26you just need some help working stuff out
- 3:28because you
- 3:29I have the personality that I bottle things up
- 3:32I don't express when I'm upset
- 3:34I'm sad I'm angry
- 3:35and I bottle it up until I explode
- 3:38and the explosion is usually not good
- 3:40it usually is bad and
- 3:41it's not directed to the people
- 3:43it needs to be directed at
- 3:45so it then it becomes harmful to the
- 3:48to the relationships that you have
- 3:51but I I didn't talk about going to therapy
- 3:55I just did it and
- 3:58was quiet yeah
- 4:00yeah cause it's nobody's business but your own
- 4:02so how did you
- 4:03start the process of looking for a therapist
- 4:05did you know what kind you wanted
- 4:07there's so many kinds I mean that's
- 4:09that's I think
- 4:10a big mountain right there
- 4:12just where do you start to find someone
- 4:14well I think
- 4:15cause I started off with the marriage counseling
- 4:17which made me realize that's not what we needed um
- 4:20because that they're giving you homework on
- 4:22you know communication and all that
- 4:24but when you've got resentment built up and
- 4:28and you know there's all these other things
- 4:30that marriage counseling doesn't work
- 4:32you gotta fix what's underlying first
- 4:35so I um
- 4:37started with my health insurance
- 4:38because obviously I had to get one
- 4:40that was approved by my health insurance
- 4:43and they gave me a long list
- 4:45and I called around to see who was available
- 4:48and of course there weren't that many available
- 4:51most of them were booked or not taking new appointments
- 4:54so um
- 4:56I did find two and one was a man and one was a woman
- 5:01and I didn't much care for the guy not
- 5:05it didn't have anything to do with that
- 5:06he was a man it was just
- 5:07he was a little more abrupt and he was a little more
- 5:12let's figure this out you know
- 5:14how are you feeling today
- 5:16and and I was like
- 5:17I don't know how I'm feeling today
- 5:19how do I I don't know anything
- 5:20I can't tell you how I'm feeling today
- 5:22I'm anxious I'm sad
- 5:23I'm all these things you know
- 5:25it I
- 5:25it didn't really help so
- 5:26then I went to a woman
- 5:28who had a little bit different approach
- 5:30where she was looking more at personalities
- 5:32and how you deal with personalities and
- 5:35and how your personality handles trauma
- 5:38and that seemed to fit me better
- 5:40um she wasn't really a trauma therapist
- 5:42but she looked at um
- 5:44she assessed my personality
- 5:46and made me take a personality test
- 5:48kind of and found that I have a reactive personality
- 5:51and so when something goes wrong
- 5:52I react immediately
- 5:54before my brain has a chance to engage
- 5:56so I had to do a lot of work on that
- 5:57but that that was helpful because it
- 5:59it kind of helped steer me into what
- 6:02what was going on and then we could work on
- 6:06on how I was reacting
- 6:08and then we could work on the issues
- 6:10so it it wasn't a quick fix
- 6:12it took maybe nine months of searching
- 6:14and going through the motions
- 6:15and trying this one and trying that one
- 6:18till I really settled in with somebody that fit me
- 6:22I think that's such an important point to bring up
- 6:24because we've talked about that with doctors
- 6:26as well as therapists before
- 6:28you know get a second opinion
- 6:29shop around if you're not clicking
- 6:31don't feel guilty
- 6:32just because it's the first person you've tried
- 6:34and you have to stay there
- 6:35you can keep going and find and
- 6:37you know we also said recently in an episode
- 6:39there's different kinds of therapy
- 6:40you might do talk therapy
- 6:42and realize that's not for you
- 6:43you might want to try something more spiritual or more
- 6:46um I don't know
- 6:46there's a million kinds so
- 6:48I like that you're highlighting that
- 6:50you did change people try something else
- 6:54yeah you not
- 6:55you don't you don't always mesh with people anyway
- 6:58and you need it's like
- 6:59we talked last episode about meshing with your doctor
- 7:02you gotta mesh you know
- 7:03you gotta have
- 7:04you gotta find somebody that you enjoy going to see
- 7:08somewhat I mean
- 7:09it's never pleasant but at the same time
- 7:12if you have a good relationship with them
- 7:13it makes going less painful
- 7:15and then you're more apt to stick with it
- 7:18definitely and then when she understands you
- 7:21and I think the personality test is huge
- 7:23I think understanding yourself
- 7:25a lot of us don't understand ourselves
- 7:27I mean I think
- 7:28once you start doing those self exploration things
- 7:31and you start learning about yourself
- 7:32you go oh
- 7:34that's why I do that I had no idea
- 7:36I just thought I was like that
- 7:38and you realize no
- 7:39you're not like that usually there's a trigger
- 7:41and you can usually get to the bottom of why
- 7:43you get there so I do think it's fascinating
- 7:47what kind of tools did she give you to work with
- 7:49that maybe you could share
- 7:52um books
- 7:54a lot of books um
- 7:56I can't tell you
- 7:56all the names of the books now but
- 7:58and there's probably many better ones out there
- 8:00but um
- 8:01that she gave me some very small books to read that
- 8:06where I could understand more about my
- 8:08reactive personality
- 8:10she gave me books to read about personality disorders
- 8:13that my ex husband seemed to have had
- 8:15but was never formally diagnosed
- 8:17cause he didn't stick with therapy
- 8:19but it helped me to understand some of
- 8:21more of how to approach him
- 8:23because when you have two reactive type personalities
- 8:26it ends up with explosions
- 8:29and while we were both somewhat sympathetic people
- 8:33he was less sympathetic than I was
- 8:35and I was looking for sympathy
- 8:37I was looking for the um
- 8:41you know the
- 8:42the pat on the back it's gonna be okay
- 8:44uh my mother was alive at that time
- 8:47and she was also not that person
- 8:50she she was going through dementia
- 8:52so you know
- 8:53but but she was not that person
- 8:55she was never the person that was understanding
- 8:58she was the you know
- 9:00you can do this
- 9:01pull yourself up by your bootstraps and you're
- 9:02and just go on and you'll get through
- 9:04and when you're
- 9:06when you feel inside like you're kind of fading away
- 9:09that's not helpful it's
- 9:11it's kind of difficult
- 9:13when people don't understand that
- 9:15you feel inside that you're fading away
- 9:17and you you kind of have a loss of control
- 9:20or whatever the situation is
- 9:22everybody is a little different
- 9:24that was my thing
- 9:25I felt like I didn't have any control over anything
- 9:27I felt I was kind of slipping away and
- 9:30and everything was just falling apart
- 9:33um the other tools that she gave me
- 9:35that were really helpful
- 9:36was tools to understand my personality
- 9:39uh and it doesn't mean that I have a bad personality
- 9:42I just react some one way
- 9:45some people react very emotionally
- 9:47and they cry and they
- 9:49you know they get upset
- 9:50some people are very quiet
- 9:52they retreat some people get angry
- 9:54um I don't necessarily react angrily
- 9:56but I just react without thinking
- 9:59and sometimes my reactions come off as sharp um
- 10:03aggressive um
- 10:04but they don't ever come up well
- 10:07they rarely come across as emotional um
- 10:12because I'm not getting what I need
- 10:14and I'm trying to get what I need
- 10:15but I don't know I did not at the time know how to say
- 10:19look this is what I need
- 10:21because I really didn't know what I need
- 10:22so I she gave me homework
- 10:24where I had to talk about what I needed
- 10:26what was a perfect day what was a perfect answer
- 10:29and so those little homework sheets that she gave me
- 10:32that were quick and easy but they were helpful
- 10:34because it helped me
- 10:36look at what I really thought was a perfect day
- 10:39yeah and I think it helps you advocate for yourself
- 10:42and we talk about advocating all the time also
- 10:44and the same for your emotions
- 10:46and that is so hard I think that's
- 10:49for me one of the hardest things is to say how I feel
- 10:52what I need because I don't want to
- 10:54because I'm a retreat kind of person
- 10:57um if I'm not happy
- 10:58if I don't like something
- 10:59I just back away and walk and
- 11:02you know put myself in a bubble and take care of myself
- 11:05and I have a
- 11:05I have a very hard time with voicing things
- 11:07so I think that is a huge piece that
- 11:10I think a lot of people struggle with
- 11:11is just being able to say what they need
- 11:14without fear of you know
- 11:15being judged or ridiculed or um
- 11:17you know
- 11:18whatever else reaction they think they might get
- 11:22and I think it helps it helps you to know how to react
- 11:26you know um
- 11:27take a couple breaths before you say something
- 11:29um don't just
- 11:32don't just fly off the handle basically
- 11:34is it whether it's emotionally crying
- 11:36or angrily yelling or just having a
- 11:39a conversation
- 11:40when it's not the right time to have a conversation
- 11:42uh that
- 11:43that's also one of the things that I learned
- 11:45was it's okay to check out and come back
- 11:47because I thought from previous therapy I had had
- 11:51that you had to sit down at the table
- 11:53and you had to figure it out before you went to bed
- 11:55you had to do that never go to bed angry
- 11:57and sometimes that's just not practical
- 12:01sometimes you do need to step away
- 12:05calm yourself down reassess things
- 12:07and then go back and try to figure out what the
- 12:09what the answer is but both parties have to be calm and
- 12:13and in a good spot as if you're not
- 12:16it just it
- 12:17it just snowballs and
- 12:19I think there's a lot of tools that you can get
- 12:22to keep the snowball from growing and becoming huge
- 12:26and then next thing you know
- 12:26you're in an avalanche because it's just
- 12:30everything keeps going
- 12:31and one of the things that she said is
- 12:33is you have a sack on your back
- 12:36and every single thing you put into that sack
- 12:38on your back and you don't do anything
- 12:40you just keep putting stuff in this sack
- 12:43until the sack becomes so heavy you break
- 12:46so I had to learn not to put stuff in my sack
- 12:48and to deal with it at the moment
- 12:51because otherwise you you're
- 12:54you're you're not dealing with things
- 12:56that you should be dealing with
- 12:57but also when it becomes so heavy
- 12:59you don't even know where to start and
- 13:01and it's just too much
- 13:02and then it seems like you have a
- 13:05a mountain to climb instead of a little hill
- 13:07so if you deal with them when they're little hills
- 13:10it's better so I tried I
- 13:11I have tried to do that in my life
- 13:13to do little things um
- 13:15another thing that I was told that I
- 13:16I still use today
- 13:18is if you don't bring it up in seven days
- 13:20it doesn't matter
- 13:22um this
- 13:23I see a lot of people bringing stuff up
- 13:25that happened 10 15 years ago
- 13:28two months ago six months ago
- 13:30if you do not solve it in seven days
- 13:33you have to let it go
- 13:35because constantly going back and revisiting things
- 13:38is not helpful so give yourself that
- 13:41I really love that and I
- 13:42I use it a lot seven days
- 13:43it's been more than seven days
- 13:44I didn't address it let it go
- 13:47and you have to be okay with that to really let it go
- 13:50but harboring resentment and guilt and
- 13:53and that is not is not a good thing to have
- 13:56so try to resolve things quickly
- 13:59and then it doesn't become this big mountain
- 14:02I like the seven day approach
- 14:04I haven't heard that for two reasons
- 14:05one it forces you to speak up
- 14:08so like we just said you
- 14:09if you internalize it and you think about it
- 14:12and you think about it if
- 14:13you know okay
- 14:14tomorrow's day seven
- 14:15I have to talk about this today or I have to let it go
- 14:17it forces that conversation to happen
- 14:19which is probably a good thing
- 14:21and then also I like it
- 14:22because
- 14:23I think we've all had somebody bring something up
- 14:26or we've maybe done it about
- 14:28you know well
- 14:29five years ago you did this
- 14:30and I'm still mad at you for it
- 14:31and we can't ever live it down and move on
- 14:33and it's like I've apologized for that
- 14:35we've moved on from that
- 14:36why are you bringing it up again
- 14:37as an example of something
- 14:39and I think that is great to
- 14:42you know everybody is human
- 14:44we make mistakes we need a fresh start
- 14:46we don't need to have stuff brought up from
- 14:49you know 10 years ago
- 14:50that you said like
- 14:52exactly seven days let's start over
- 14:53so I think that's a great yeah
- 14:56way to to have a timeline for that
- 14:58and you know
- 14:59there's a there's a big difference
- 15:01um this is another thing that I learned
- 15:03there's a big difference between solving a problem
- 15:06and manipulation
- 15:08and a lot of people use it as manipulation
- 15:12and my ex did use a lot of it as manipulation
- 15:15and he went back very far
- 15:18well you know
- 15:19in 2010 you did this and you said that
- 15:22and now you're doing this and you're saying that
- 15:24and you haven't changed well
- 15:26no I haven't
- 15:27cause I'm still the same me
- 15:28but I that was then
- 15:31this is now it's not the same
- 15:32and so people will use things against you as tools
- 15:37to try to manipulate you
- 15:38to do what they want you to do
- 15:41and yet you know
- 15:42it's a pitfall you have to really be careful of those
- 15:44and if somebody brings something up to me
- 15:47that happened more than seven days ago
- 15:50that they want to solve it
- 15:52I try very hard to say it's over
- 15:55it's done it's it
- 15:56we let's not let it go
- 15:58because we can't go back there
- 16:00cause you you
- 16:01it's like a hamster wheel
- 16:02you just keep going around and around and around
- 16:04and you've got to at some point cut it off and be done
- 16:08yeah that makes sense
- 16:10all right let's talk about the stigma of therapy
- 16:12in the cancer community
- 16:14what do you feel like the stigma is
- 16:16and what do you feel like is being done
- 16:18or has been done to break it or could be done
- 16:22I think in a lot of cancers
- 16:23therapy isn't there isnt a stigma on therapy
- 16:26I think that they encourage it
- 16:28but those are the cancers
- 16:29the more popular cancers um
- 16:31the cancers where you have a lot of disfigurement um
- 16:34like breast cancer is one
- 16:36or some um
- 16:38skin cancers where they're taking off large things
- 16:41that you are now not don't look the same
- 16:44but I think people think that that's okay
- 16:47to get therapy for you know
- 16:49if a breast cancer loses a breast
- 16:51it's okay for her to go get therapy for that
- 16:53because it's a huge loss
- 16:56um in our world
- 16:57I don't think it
- 16:58people realize that loss of vision is a real loss
- 17:02loss of an eye is a huge loss
- 17:04well you'll get a prosthetic and you'll be fine
- 17:06oh well
- 17:06you still have your eye you know
- 17:08you look good it's not helpful to anybody
- 17:11so I think people think well
- 17:14you look good why do you need therapy
- 17:16you're doing fine why do you need therapy
- 17:19and I think even doctors think that the um
- 17:22I wish doctors would send patients newly diagnosed to a
- 17:26a therapist as well as a medical oncologist
- 17:29right when they're diagnosed
- 17:31because this is a big heavy cancer to live with
- 17:34and I'm a lucky one
- 17:37that my eye does not look any different
- 17:40except it's a little off center
- 17:42but it takes a lot for someone to notice
- 17:44that my eye is not on center
- 17:46um but there are other people that have a lot of issues
- 17:50if they had an enucleation
- 17:51their prosthetic doesn't fit right
- 17:53um they
- 17:55therapy would be good
- 17:56because when you look at yourself in the mirror
- 17:58and you don't look like the way you used to
- 17:59it's hard um
- 18:01when your eye doesn't operate the way it used to
- 18:04it's difficult
- 18:05and so I think there is a stigma in our cancer
- 18:09because we look good we look fine
- 18:12what what's the matter
- 18:13you know you're fine
- 18:14you don't have meds you're fine
- 18:16it's it's not that
- 18:18it's the it's the long term thing
- 18:20and I don't know if there's a person out there
- 18:22who can just put that away until they get the scans
- 18:25it creeps in um
- 18:27it it creeps in every time you're gonna get a scan
- 18:29it creeps in when you are having a bad
- 18:31I call it a bad eye day when my eye is acting up
- 18:34and it's hard for me to concentrate and
- 18:37and I it's just irritating me all day long
- 18:40um people don't talk about those things
- 18:43and I think that's that's sad that that doesn't happen
- 18:47um so I
- 18:49I wish that in our cancer
- 18:52more people would make it a normal thing
- 18:55not well
- 18:57what do you mean well
- 18:58I guess I could send you to somebody
- 19:00you know those are the
- 19:00those are the comments that I hear in the community
- 19:02that we should be fine oh
- 19:04you're gonna be fine
- 19:07how do we know and how do you tell your brain that
- 19:10how does your brain shut off
- 19:11oh we're gonna be fine brain quit
- 19:16definitely that's hard to grapple with
- 19:19when someone's telling you you're gonna be fine
- 19:22but you don't actually believe it uh huh
- 19:27so I think to get over this stigma is
- 19:30is just being honest with people and telling them
- 19:32I am not fine
- 19:34thank you for telling me I look good
- 19:36but that's not what it's about
- 19:38what it's about is that I'm worried about my future
- 19:42I'm worried about this I
- 19:44I can't do the things I used to do
- 19:46and I think if we all are honest
- 19:49then the stigmas will go away
- 19:51but a patient should never feel bad
- 19:53about going in for therapy
- 19:55because it's a natural thing
- 19:57definitely I think that's such a great point
- 20:00in your therapy journey did you ever hit a point
- 20:03where you felt like you had grown enough
- 20:05that you wanted to try a different kind of therapy
- 20:08or maybe stop all together
- 20:11did you ever hit that point
- 20:12I did I hit a point where I thought
- 20:14I couldn't go any farther in that
- 20:16because
- 20:17there wasn't anything else for me to talk about
- 20:19I was just kind of done talking about it
- 20:21but when you get to a point when you
- 20:22you're talked out I think is
- 20:24is it you figure out
- 20:26I don't have anything else to say
- 20:27I feel good I feel stable again
- 20:30I feel like I can go do this
- 20:33I don't feel like I need check ins
- 20:35and with my therapy we started off
- 20:38you know once a week
- 20:39and then it went to every two weeks
- 20:42and then I went to once a month
- 20:44and I stayed at once a month for a while
- 20:46uh and then I just felt like I've
- 20:49I've had gotten all I could get out of that um
- 20:53I didn't go back into any other kind of therapy
- 20:55but other people I know have
- 20:58they've done some other things um
- 21:00they've done some therapy that involved
- 21:04you know um
- 21:05meditation and spiritual healing
- 21:07and those sort of things
- 21:08which are all perfectly valid next steps
- 21:14um I did not do that
- 21:17mainly because it wasn't available to me where I lived
- 21:20it wasn't a thing so it was
- 21:23it wasn't something I could just seek out
- 21:26but the you know
- 21:28spiritual counseling spiritual healing
- 21:31it is something
- 21:32some people went into more trauma therapy
- 21:34where they were learning how to deal with traumas
- 21:36not just ocular melanoma but past
- 21:39so I think everybody is gonna evolve on their own time
- 21:44and some people will just be able to know when to stop
- 21:47and be done
- 21:47and some people will stay in it for their lifetime
- 21:50and whichever way that is
- 21:52is perfectly okay it
- 21:54there's no right or wrong answer here
- 21:56but also if you feel like this therapy you're stuck in
- 22:00maybe try some other things
- 22:02you know try
- 22:04uh some of some more
- 22:07internal work you know
- 22:08spiritual type work I'm not talking about prayer and
- 22:12and religious learning
- 22:13I'm talking about looking inside yourself heal
- 22:16healing yourself spiritually
- 22:18that's shadow work thank you for that
- 22:21yeah so you know about that
- 22:24yes heal that inner child guys
- 22:27yeah I think it's great
- 22:29it was not available to me where I live
- 22:31it still
- 22:31I still don't live in an area where I can find that
- 22:34so I am I could do some stuff online
- 22:37but I read some books a little bit
- 22:39I was referred a book by Mel Robbins
- 22:43Let Them that helped me a lot
- 22:45that's probably the best therapy book I've ever had
- 22:47was that one because I have a
- 22:49I was raised in a um
- 22:52Midwestern type family that
- 22:54what will the neighbors think
- 22:56well you can't talk about that
- 22:57what will the neighbors think and
- 23:00and I that was
- 23:02that's a big a big thing of mine
- 23:04it's a trigger oh
- 23:05my god what does everybody think
- 23:06what's people thinking about me
- 23:08oh my gosh
- 23:08I can't believe I just said that or did that
- 23:10what are they thinking about me
- 23:11and in reality
- 23:12most people aren't even thinking about you and
- 23:15and it was a really good book to
- 23:17to read to
- 23:18just to let them let them go on
- 23:19do what they say
- 23:21and my ex husband used to tell me all the time
- 23:24it's none of your business what people think of you
- 23:27well yes
- 23:27it is this is my reputation
- 23:29what will the neighbors think
- 23:31so I had to retrain my brain to
- 23:32who cares what the neighbors think
- 23:34but it was that was hard
- 23:35and I didn't do that in therapy
- 23:37I did that on my after words
- 23:39because I didn't know it was an issue
- 23:42and then I realized this is a big issue
- 23:45yeah that is a hard one
- 23:47I actually did take a workshop where um
- 23:50it was called The Game of Life
- 23:51and basically
- 23:54the point of it is you stay on your own game board
- 23:56we all have a game board
- 23:57we all have obstacles and objectives
- 24:00and things that we are doing
- 24:02and you stay on your board
- 24:04and you don't you don't go play on someone else's board
- 24:06you stay on your board and there are times that um
- 24:11somebody else will be kind of stressing me out and um
- 24:15for whatever reason uh
- 24:17I think
- 24:17I feel like I need to help people more than I do
- 24:20and so when somebody's spiraling
- 24:22I'm like I take on that stress of oh
- 24:24I have to help them and then I have to remind myself
- 24:27no I don't
- 24:29like I'm on my board
- 24:30if they want to figure it out
- 24:31if they want something they
- 24:33they can find it but I need to stay on my board and
- 24:37and it always calms me down
- 24:38because every time I get overwhelmed
- 24:40and I put myself back on my board and I say oh
- 24:42all I have to worry about is me
- 24:44then all of a sudden
- 24:46my load goes away and it's so much lighter
- 24:49and I'm like oh
- 24:49I just have to worry about myself
- 24:50ah what a
- 24:51what a novel concept I know right
- 24:53but I think as women and
- 24:54I mean here we're also gonna have men and women are
- 24:58are gonna differ in this women tend to be caretakers
- 25:01nurturers fixers
- 25:02I'm a huge fixer I still wanna fix everything
- 25:05I wanna fix everybody I wanna adopt every stray animal
- 25:08actually men are big fixers too though
- 25:10so I I think men will relate to that too
- 25:12they don't wanna listen they wanna fix
- 25:15right men yeah exactly
- 25:18they wanna fix in their way
- 25:19um and they don't like loss of control and
- 25:22you know there's all these other things that differ
- 25:25but I think women
- 25:26we tend to get in other people's business
- 25:28a little too much'cause we wanna help
- 25:30and we think we're helping
- 25:31and we are not helping
- 25:33that's very true cause it's not helpful
- 25:36and that you know
- 25:37especially when the help you're offering is
- 25:39pull yourself up by your bootstraps
- 25:41and put on a happy face it's gonna be fine
- 25:43and then they're like that's not helpful at all
- 25:45please leave me alone yes yes
- 25:47what do you mean you're struggling
- 25:48you look good your eye looks good
- 25:51yeah well
- 25:52try living with this eye you know it
- 25:54it might look good but
- 25:56you know and it's funny because I have
- 25:59I have um
- 26:00hooded eyes it's a
- 26:02it's a genetic trait in my family
- 26:04and my ocular melanoma eye
- 26:07looks better than my non ocular melanoma eye
- 26:10so everybody always thinks my good eye is my OM eye
- 26:13cause my my lid is drooping more on my good eye
- 26:17and um
- 26:18I was talking to some ocular plastics doctor
- 26:21and
- 26:21they were marveling at my eye being put back together
- 26:24well and what a good job they did
- 26:27and I'm thinking but it's off center
- 26:29and they're like oh
- 26:30but it's good for what other what
- 26:32I've seen other doctors I've seen them
- 26:33I mean they're pointing this way
- 26:35they gotta go back in and redo surgeries
- 26:37and I do know some of our
- 26:38our patients have had to go in and have another surgery
- 26:41but I think sometimes also
- 26:43we get so caught up in what we don't have
- 26:45and what our own insecurities of how we look
- 26:48that other people don't see it
- 26:51and so even though people are saying
- 26:54oh but you look so good
- 26:55sometimes I think we don't believe it
- 26:57we need to start doing that as well
- 26:59so that's kind of a double edge sword
- 27:02we are overly critical of ourselves
- 27:03which then tends to give us more insecurities
- 27:06which gives us more anxiety
- 27:08which makes
- 27:08dealing with situations a little bit differently
- 27:10so when somebody comes up to you and says
- 27:13but your eye looks so good
- 27:15you know you just say thank you
- 27:17and don't hold a resentment against them
- 27:20they don't understand
- 27:21and you don't need to educate every single person
- 27:24that's a big pitfall I
- 27:25I hear people talk about well
- 27:28I just told them that that is not what the problem is
- 27:32and then what happens is people were like whoa
- 27:36I didn't ask for that
- 27:37I was just trying to give you a compliment
- 27:38so um
- 27:40if somebody offers you something
- 27:42take it if they offer you a compliment
- 27:43take it don't psychoanalyze it
- 27:45don't read more into it don't let it trip up
- 27:48trip up your day you just say thank you and go on
- 27:52cause they're not gonna ever understand
- 27:54yes and just like you said before
- 27:56when you feel like people are judging you
- 27:58and looking at you they're not
- 28:00they're so worried about themselves
- 28:01and everyone who's looking at them
- 28:03and no one's looking at them either
- 28:04and I think if we can all realize nobody cares
- 28:08I mean look around the room
- 28:09next time you're in a room and think like
- 28:11do you care what anyone's wearing
- 28:12do you think anybody is like
- 28:14oh my god
- 28:14their hair is just a mess today
- 28:16like no
- 28:17you see you just see people around you
- 28:19and you probably see beautiful people around you
- 28:23and when they look at you
- 28:24that's what they see but when you look at yourself
- 28:26it's oh
- 28:26I need to whiten my teeth
- 28:27I have flyaways I need
- 28:29you know my wrinkles are showing
- 28:30nobody sees it but you so yeah
- 28:32try to let those things go
- 28:34I think that is really hard
- 28:35but really important
- 28:37it is and
- 28:38you know I
- 28:38I I
- 28:39I use this expression a lot to give them Grace
- 28:43please give me Grace and I will give you Grace
- 28:46because I'm gonna do and say things
- 28:48that I probably shouldn't do and say often
- 28:51give me Grace because I don't ever mean it maliciously
- 28:53or I know sometimes my brain gets ahead of
- 28:56or my mouth gets ahead of my brain
- 28:58and I don't always think things through um
- 29:01or I'll stop in the middle of a thought
- 29:02because something catches my eye
- 29:04and then that thought dangles
- 29:05and it's not anything what I meant
- 29:06you know um
- 29:08what happened
- 29:08to us this weekend with the whole pancake thing I
- 29:11I wasn't I
- 29:12I said I didn't eat as much as you guys
- 29:14and then I paused
- 29:16I didn't mean that it was a competition
- 29:18I didn't mean that I was better
- 29:21I meant then when I got undistracted as like
- 29:25oh no
- 29:25that's not what I meant what I meant was
- 29:26I'm afraid to eat this pancake that is so good
- 29:29because I don't want to be in a carb coma
- 29:31and have to drive six hours home
- 29:33but you know
- 29:35there's times when things can be misinterpreted
- 29:38and you have to give yourself Grace
- 29:39and you have to ask other people to give you Grace
- 29:41cause sometimes you're just ridiculous
- 29:43and you realize it that you're just being ridiculous
- 29:45and
- 29:46and I think that that has to do with self growth and
- 29:49and doing therapy
- 29:50is to know when you are just being ridiculous
- 29:52and to be and to check yourself
- 29:54cause it's not always the other person
- 29:56sometimes it's you maybe you're too sensitive
- 29:58maybe you are overreacting
- 30:00and
- 30:01I think that therapy helps you recognize those parts
- 30:04to where you can just be like
- 30:07oops sorry
- 30:09yeah and I was only teasing you about the pancake
- 30:12I know but it wasn't good fun
- 30:15it wasn't I didn't
- 30:17but it was just a good example of sometimes how
- 30:20how you you think you're coming across
- 30:23isn't really how other people are seeing you
- 30:25but you have to give yourself Grace when you do that
- 30:27and that was the only example I can come up with but
- 30:31but no that's
- 30:32that's very true I actually
- 30:34I'll give a little example
- 30:35that just happened to me yesterday
- 30:37I was in a group message and I wasn't responding
- 30:40because it was like directives were giving
- 30:43were given out in this group message hey
- 30:45do this post this
- 30:46do this and so okay done
- 30:49all of it done
- 30:50and the organizer of it said
- 30:52I am frustrated because you guys are not answering
- 30:55and I feel like I'm just talking into a void
- 30:57and I said I'm really sorry
- 30:59I didn't want to ping the entire group with okay
- 31:03when I could just go do it
- 31:04I thought it was more
- 31:05you were just telling us what you needed
- 31:08so thank you for telling us what you needed
- 31:09that you need a response because I did not respond
- 31:12because I didn't want to annoy everyone
- 31:14on this group text and she's sitting here going
- 31:16why are none of you responding
- 31:17you guys are so rude and it was a complete
- 31:20we were all just trying not to be rude
- 31:24but you know
- 31:24and that is one thing
- 31:26written word gets misconstrued so easily
- 31:31so easily um
- 31:32but that's part of the
- 31:34knowing you and knowing yourself
- 31:36and being able to give yourself Grace
- 31:37oop messed up sorry
- 31:38and also communication um
- 31:40I think we really didn't talk about this
- 31:43with therapy
- 31:43but that's one of the things I Learned about myself
- 31:48was how to communicate better
- 31:50how to express my needs
- 31:51because I was not raised to do that
- 31:54I was raised you don't have needs
- 31:56you are here to serve the needs of everyone else
- 31:58not your own that's selfish
- 32:00you know and
- 32:01and it's not selfish you have to
- 32:04and I used to say this to everybody
- 32:07you cannot help somebody else if your cup is empty
- 32:11you can have nothing left to pour into theirs
- 32:13so you need to take care of yourself
- 32:15but I was the worst person at taking that advice
- 32:17I would take care of everybody else
- 32:19and not take care of myself
- 32:22yep it can be hard to do if you're not used to it
- 32:24and I think also if you have people that live with you
- 32:29whether it's children or a spouse or um
- 32:32you know older parents that live with you
- 32:33it can be really difficult
- 32:35because you feel like you have to
- 32:38put your focus somewhere else first
- 32:41you know
- 32:41and this is for another episode way down the line
- 32:45but I'll just touch on a little bit
- 32:46especially for those caregivers out there
- 32:48you can't be a good caregiver if your cup is not full
- 32:52I was a caregiver to my mother
- 32:53while I was going through um
- 32:55not just ocular melanoma
- 32:57but also another big medical thing
- 33:00and it was very hard for to be a good caregiver to her
- 33:02when I couldn't be a good caregiver to myself
- 33:05um and
- 33:06and I think it's okay for both caregivers
- 33:10and for the patients to ask for breaks
- 33:13you know it
- 33:14caregivers get sick of hearing us
- 33:17and I think that
- 33:18that therapy gives you an outlet to talk about it
- 33:21so that you're not talking about it
- 33:22to all your friends and your family
- 33:24that's a good point
- 33:26all right everyone
- 33:27we're gonna wrap up there
- 33:28and we will see you all on the next episode
