- 0:00Audio Only - All Participants-1: All right, welcome to another day of Burnout in the workplace.
- 0:06Audio Only - All Participants-1: And today I'm bringing in a leadership coach of C Suite, one of my friends from Instagram.
- 0:13Audio Only - All Participants-1: His name is Doug.
- 0:15Audio Only - All Participants-1: And before we even start talking, I'm going to let Doug introduce himself to you so you can kind of know what we're going to talk about today.
- 0:23Audio Only - All Participants-1: Thanks so much, Kathie so my name is Doug Kothe I am the founder and principal consultant for PeopleSmart Group, and we are focused on helping organizations build healthier teams, get greater clarity, and get greater alignment of their people so that they can be a healthier organization, so that everyone will be on the same page, rowing in the same direction, getting great results.
- 0:43Audio Only - All Participants-1: Awesome.
- 0:44Audio Only - All Participants-1: Love that.
- 0:44Audio Only - All Participants-1: Sounds just like what we want to talk about today.
- 0:48Audio Only - All Participants-1: So my main question in these 12 days of holiday, I'm going to be asking different experts on their topic on how they prevent burnout or whatever they may call it in the workplace.
- 1:02Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so today, that's my question for you, Doug.
- 1:05Audio Only - All Participants-1: How do you help us prevent burnout in the workplace?
- 1:08Audio Only - All Participants-1: So I think as I think about burnout, the key piece is not everyone can identify it, right?
- 1:12Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so for a lot of people, they're feeling weary, they're tired.
- 1:17Audio Only - All Participants-1: For some people, especially men, it can come out as anger.
- 1:20Audio Only - All Participants-1: Very often we're, we're so down and we can't, we don't have enough to handle things and that secondary emotion comes out instead of the primary of, hey, I'm frustrated, I'm angry all the time.
- 1:29Audio Only - All Participants-1: I don't know what's going on in me.
- 1:31Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so.
- 1:31Audio Only - All Participants-1: Just being able to identify it in the first place is vital in terms of, Hey, what, what's going on?
- 1:35Audio Only - All Participants-1: Why do I want to go ahead?
- 1:36Audio Only - All Participants-1: And sometimes it'll just be, Hey, I just don't have enough, get up and go.
- 1:39Audio Only - All Participants-1: I just, I've lost a gear.
- 1:41Audio Only - All Participants-1: What's going on with me.
- 1:42Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so those identifiers and helping leaders identify that is a really helpful piece.
- 1:47Audio Only - All Participants-1: I would say for me, and a lot of my work starts with the C suite.
- 1:51Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so for me, I'm constantly working with leadership teams as a whole.
- 1:55Audio Only - All Participants-1: Um, and I think one of the things I share with them for them and for their organization is.
- 1:59Audio Only - All Participants-1: That one of the first things I think is a, is a shared purpose, a shared purpose that actually transcends the organization and is really exciting and drives people.
- 2:08Audio Only - All Participants-1: Because if, if you are, um, you know, if you're excited about what we're all doing and trying to accomplish together, well one, that builds energy.
- 2:16Audio Only - All Participants-1: It builds excitement.
- 2:17Audio Only - All Participants-1: It gets us going.
- 2:18Audio Only - All Participants-1: It's not draining.
- 2:19Audio Only - All Participants-1: You know, I remember yesterday we talked, Kathie and I just said to you, you're so passionate about what you do.
- 2:24Audio Only - All Participants-1: I love that.
- 2:24Audio Only - All Participants-1: And you're so energetic about it.
- 2:26Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so when you're focused on that, I mean, do you get drained and tired?
- 2:30Audio Only - All Participants-1: Probably a little test, but not overall, right?
- 2:33Audio Only - All Participants-1: It's just a driver.
- 2:34Audio Only - All Participants-1: You're going, hey, I get to do this.
- 2:36Audio Only - All Participants-1: You're excited.
- 2:36Audio Only - All Participants-1: It's a get to, and it gets, it drives engagement and it drives energy.
- 2:39Audio Only - All Participants-1: It drives excitement.
- 2:41Audio Only - All Participants-1: So that'd be the first I thought of.
- 2:42Audio Only - All Participants-1: The second I would think of is the ability to know ourselves better.
- 2:46Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so when I dive in with a team, I'm always doing assessments.
- 2:49Audio Only - All Participants-1: And I know we've talked and you do assessments as well with a larger organization.
- 2:53Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so those assessments, one of them for me is a assessment called the six types of working genius.
- 2:58Audio Only - All Participants-1: And what that gets at is.
- 3:00Audio Only - All Participants-1: What brings you joy and energy to do in your work?
- 3:02Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so it breaks work down into six categories and it says, which ones bring you energy until I know that I'm going to spend a whole lot of time spinning my wheels on stuff that drains me.
- 3:12Audio Only - All Participants-1: And I won't see it until I reach more closer to that burnout stage.
- 3:16Audio Only - All Participants-1: Right.
- 3:16Audio Only - All Participants-1: But if I can, I can assess and figure out, Hey, what brings me energy to do?
- 3:20Audio Only - All Participants-1: I can, I can spend more time in those areas and less than the other, or I can compensate.
- 3:25Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so every, every job we're going to do things to drain us.
- 3:27Audio Only - All Participants-1: Right.
- 3:28Audio Only - All Participants-1: But the reality is I can do tactically things that would help me.
- 3:32Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so one of the things I talk about is bookending.
- 3:34Audio Only - All Participants-1: And I say, look, if I can bookend the draining task with an energizing task on either end, I get energy on the way in and I get energy on the way out.
- 3:41Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so I can get through the task and I'm not burning out because guess what I've re energized.
- 3:45Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so that's a key way.
- 3:46Audio Only - All Participants-1: And then the other thing I talk to people about is partnering.
- 3:49Audio Only - All Participants-1: Find people who have different, uh, energizing things than you do.
- 3:52Audio Only - All Participants-1: And when you're working in those tasks, bring them in, feed off of their energy, let their energy be a feeder for you.
- 3:58Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so that teamwork is just vital in those areas.
- 4:01Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so I think so many of us miss that because we, we work in such a individualistic way, right?
- 4:05Audio Only - All Participants-1: We think, Oh, I've got to accomplish my tasks.
- 4:08Audio Only - All Participants-1: And it's like, no, actually, if we know each other and we know where each other is energized and where each other is drained.
- 4:14Audio Only - All Participants-1: We can put it together and work together in a much better way.
- 4:17Audio Only - All Participants-1: So, the third I would say is strong relationships.
- 4:22Audio Only - All Participants-1: Um, I think we build strong relationships with one another.
- 4:25Audio Only - All Participants-1: That's a supportive thing as well, right?
- 4:27Audio Only - All Participants-1: Because I have other people encouraging me.
- 4:28Audio Only - All Participants-1: Other people who are for me.
- 4:30Audio Only - All Participants-1: That energizes me.
- 4:31Audio Only - All Participants-1: I don't know about other people, but that energizes me when I know I have a team around me that cares about me and is for me.
- 4:37Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so when that happens, Again, a strong team that is around you is going to be energizing and, and as well, if I have the trust with them, they're going to be there to challenge me or encourage me to take a break and get recharged if I need it.
- 4:50Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so I think that's a key piece for, for organizations.
- 4:52Audio Only - All Participants-1: Will you build great teams that there's a trust?
- 4:55Audio Only - All Participants-1: And when I talk about trust, I talk about a vulnerability based trust, a trust, not that it's just like, Oh, I know you can do your job, but a trust that says, Hey, you know what?
- 5:03Audio Only - All Participants-1: I know.
- 5:03Audio Only - All Participants-1: Your weaknesses.
- 5:04Audio Only - All Participants-1: You know my weaknesses.
- 5:05Audio Only - All Participants-1: I know I can tell you what I'm struggling at.
- 5:07Audio Only - All Participants-1: And you're not going to judge me.
- 5:08Audio Only - All Participants-1: You're not going to be bothered by it.
- 5:09Audio Only - All Participants-1: You're going to help me.
- 5:10Audio Only - All Participants-1: You're going to be for me.
- 5:11Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so that type of trust is vital in teams to really build what we really need.
- 5:16Audio Only - All Participants-1: Um, fourth, I had five here, so bear with me.
- 5:20Audio Only - All Participants-1: Fourth, I think of is building balance into our lives.
- 5:22Audio Only - All Participants-1: And this one gets a lot of lip service, but not a lot of practice.
- 5:25Audio Only - All Participants-1: And I think that's the, that's the shortfall.
- 5:27Audio Only - All Participants-1: It's not that we don't talk about it, but I know for myself, when I get stressed, I push in and do more and more and more and I, I, I weed out all the stuff that recharges me and re energizes me.
- 5:37Audio Only - All Participants-1: That's where I naturally go when I'm in stress.
- 5:40Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so that's what we do and we start to push and push and push and push harder and all we do is burn ourselves out quicker and more.
- 5:46Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so if we would, You know, put in as big rocks in our day and in our week and in our months and in our year.
- 5:52Audio Only - All Participants-1: Hey, these are the things that recharge me.
- 5:53Audio Only - All Participants-1: I've got to make sure I do them.
- 5:55Audio Only - All Participants-1: Like I do this with my marriage.
- 5:56Audio Only - All Participants-1: Like my wife and I, we say, Hey, every year we're going to do this.
- 5:59Audio Only - All Participants-1: We're going to go away together and spend time.
- 6:00Audio Only - All Participants-1: Just us.
- 6:01Audio Only - All Participants-1: We're going to have a date night each week.
- 6:02Audio Only - All Participants-1: We're going to put in those big rocks and say everything else that gets planned around it.
- 6:06Audio Only - All Participants-1: Well, what are those things that recharge you?
- 6:08Audio Only - All Participants-1: You need to do that.
- 6:09Audio Only - All Participants-1: And, uh, with that, my last one would be this is, and this, I got advice early on from someone and I love it.
- 6:15Audio Only - All Participants-1: It was so great.
- 6:17Audio Only - All Participants-1: And he just said, look, when you take a vacation, don't just rest and lay around on the couch.
- 6:21Audio Only - All Participants-1: Don't just do mindless stuff.
- 6:23Audio Only - All Participants-1: You have to do things that are restorative.
- 6:25Audio Only - All Participants-1: And how many of us go on a vacation and we come back more tired than when we left?
- 6:29Audio Only - All Participants-1: And it's like, no, not that you, you have to be mindful of what restores you and do those things so that you can be reenergized.
- 6:37Audio Only - All Participants-1: And that's not just on our vacations.
- 6:38Audio Only - All Participants-1: That's all the time.
- 6:39Audio Only - All Participants-1: You got a day off.
- 6:40Audio Only - All Participants-1: Hey, do something restorative.
- 6:42Audio Only - All Participants-1: Don't just lay on the couch, watching football all day.
- 6:44Audio Only - All Participants-1: If you're a guy like me, who likes football.
- 6:46Audio Only - All Participants-1: Yeah, sure.
- 6:47Audio Only - All Participants-1: I love that.
- 6:47Audio Only - All Participants-1: But guess what?
- 6:48Audio Only - All Participants-1: If I just sit there and watch three straight games, I'm exhausted at the end of that.
- 6:51Audio Only - All Participants-1: That's not energizing.
- 6:52Audio Only - All Participants-1: So I've got to do some energizing stuff.
- 6:54Audio Only - All Participants-1: So maybe I pick a game and then I go do something else that really reinvigorates me.
- 6:58Audio Only - All Participants-1: And so those are some of the things that as I think about it, and I know there's so many more, but you've got time to cover those.
- 7:03Audio Only - All Participants-1: And I know you've got other people coming to cover them as well.
- 7:05Audio Only - All Participants-1: So.
- 7:06Audio Only - All Participants-1: Wow.
- 7:07Audio Only - All Participants-1: I love it.
- 7:08Audio Only - All Participants-1: So I almost got tears in my eyes when you were talking at the beginning.
- 7:12Audio Only - All Participants-1: The, book ends is really important because it will help you avoid procrastination too in there because if you have something that energizes you at the end and the beginning and also I love this.
- 7:25Audio Only - All Participants-1: What, what really brought joy to my heart is I can sense the momentum that each step brought.
- 7:33Audio Only - All Participants-1: Each step builds momentum off of the others.
- 7:37Audio Only - All Participants-1: And honestly, from this episode, you could take notes.
- 7:40Audio Only - All Participants-1: And I'm thinking in my mind, I'm going to, I want to write this down, but thank goodness this is being recorded and I'm going to be editing it.
- 7:47Audio Only - All Participants-1: And I'm going to be writing notes.
- 7:49Audio Only - All Participants-1: And also from this episode, I include a blog post with.
- 7:52Audio Only - All Participants-1: every episode I do.
- 7:54Audio Only - All Participants-1: So I will have links to that in the show notes and description below.
- 7:58Audio Only - All Participants-1: And then you can take these insights, And really put them to memory because they will be so, so helpful because what Doug is talking about is not just in leadership, not just in C suite, not just at work, but at home and in your life in general.
- 8:14Audio Only - All Participants-1: I like the balance aspect too, because what happens with me when I start to feel burnt out, I always remind myself.
- 8:21Audio Only - All Participants-1: Things have balance, balance in life, balanced forces.
- 8:25Audio Only - All Participants-1: And when you work with the other side of the balance, let's say you are stressed out and you go to the other side of the balance, it evens everything out and then you feel better and you're more productive, you're more successful.
- 8:37Audio Only - All Participants-1: So all of these.
- 8:39Audio Only - All Participants-1: Tips that, that, that Doug gave us today are very helpful, very helpful in life in general, and, and stopping burnout because, as he said, we all call it something different.
- 8:50Audio Only - All Participants-1: You may not realize that that's burnout, but why am I angry right now?
- 8:55Audio Only - All Participants-1: Why am I getting so short tempered with my husband, with my wife, when, They didn't have anything to do with what's going on.
- 9:02Audio Only - All Participants-1: And when you do that introspection, you start to realize, Oh, that's burnout.
- 9:07Audio Only - All Participants-1: Well, how can I balance that out?
- 9:08Audio Only - All Participants-1: So these points are very helpful.
- 9:11Audio Only - All Participants-1: And each day we're going to have another episode that we'll talk about different ways we can deal with burnout, whatever you may call it.
- 9:20Audio Only - All Participants-1: And we will definitely be having Doug back on another episode just to Get more, pick his brain a little bit more, because that was some good stuff.
- 9:30Audio Only - All Participants-1: And before we close, I want to give Doug the chance to tell you goodbye, where you can find him.
- 9:36Audio Only - All Participants-1: Again, there will be links to, to find out any information about that, especially inside the blog post.
- 9:43Audio Only - All Participants-1: I will include links to where you can find Doug.
- 9:47Audio Only - All Participants-1: Let me give him the opportunity to give his final word and then I'll close out.
- 9:53Audio Only - All Participants-1: Thank you so much, Kathie and I'm so thrilled you're doing this.
- 9:55Audio Only - All Participants-1: I think this is so vital for, for so many.
