- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday.
- 0:14It's the 27th of May. And I was fascinated to read
- 0:19that four years ago today, a terrible tragedy struck the
- 0:23world as reported by Argentine News Channel 26, that William
- 0:28Shakespeare died after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.
- 0:34That's right. He may have actually died in
- 0:361616. But no, that will not stop some
- 0:40news channel reporting something that way out as little as four
- 0:45years ago. You can imagine the editor
- 0:47looking back over the news of that day going, how did that
- 0:50slip through? But yes, yes friends, good idea
- 0:54just to double check everything we hear in the news as we
- 0:57struggle to find things that we know can be trusted as truth.
- 1:01However, what a brilliant segue as we move forward into today's
- 1:06Bible reading, which is of course inspired by God's Spirit,
- 1:10inspired by the one who not only tells us the truth, but who is
- 1:15truth. So friends, let us crack open
- 1:18our Bibles for this truth to enter into our hearts and shape
- 1:21our day as we read together Hebrews Chapter 11.
- 1:37Faith shows the reality of what we hope for.
- 1:40It is the evidence of things we cannot see.
- 1:43Through their faith. The people in days of old earned
- 1:47a good reputation. By faith we understand that the
- 1:50entire universe was formed at God's command, that what we now
- 1:56see did not come from anything that can be seen.
- 1:59It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable
- 2:02offering to God than Cain did. Abel's offering gave evidence
- 2:06that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his
- 2:10gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he
- 2:14still speaks to us by his example of faith.
- 2:18It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without
- 2:21dying. He disappeared because God took
- 2:24him, for before he was taken up he was known as a person who
- 2:29pleased God, and it is impossible to please God without
- 2:32faith. Anyone who wants to come to him
- 2:36must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who
- 2:40sincerely seek him. It was by faith that Noah built
- 2:44a large boat to save his family from the flood.
- 2:47He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never
- 2:51happened before. By his faith, Noah condemned the
- 2:55rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that
- 2:58comes by faith. It was by faith that Abraham
- 3:02obeyed. When God called him to leave
- 3:04home and go to another land that God would give him as his
- 3:07inheritance, he went without knowing where he was going.
- 3:11And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived
- 3:15there by faith, for he was like a foreigner living in tents.
- 3:19And so did Isaac and Jacob, who inherited the same promise.
- 3:23Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal
- 3:27foundations, a city designed and built by God.
- 3:33It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child.
- 3:36Though she was barren and was too old, she believed that God
- 3:40would keep his promise. And so a whole nation came from
- 3:44this one man who was as good as dead.
- 3:48A nation with so many people that like the stars in the sky
- 3:52and the sand on the seashore, there is no way to count them.
- 3:56All these people died still believing what God had promised
- 3:59them. They did not receive what was
- 4:02promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it.
- 4:07They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on
- 4:10earth. Obviously, people who say such
- 4:13things are looking forward to a country they can call their own.
- 4:18If they had longed for the country they came from, they
- 4:21would have gone back. But they were looking for a
- 4:24better place, a heavenly homeland.
- 4:27That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He
- 4:31has prepared a city for them. It was by faith that Abraham
- 4:36offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him.
- 4:40Abraham, who had received God's promises, was ready to sacrifice
- 4:44his only son, Isaac, even though God had told him Isaac is the
- 4:49son through whom your descendants will be counted.
- 4:53Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him
- 4:58back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did
- 5:01receive his son back from the dead.
- 5:05It was by faith that Isaac promised blessings for the
- 5:07future of his sons Jacob and Esau.
- 5:11It was by faith that Jacob, when he was old and dying, blessed
- 5:15each of Joseph's sons and bowed in worship as he leaned on his
- 5:19staff. It was by faith that Joseph,
- 5:23when he was about to die, said confidently that the people of
- 5:27Israel would leave Egypt. He even commanded them to take
- 5:31his bones with them when they left.
- 5:34It was by faith that Moses parents hid him for three
- 5:37months. When he was born, they saw that
- 5:40God had given them an unusual child, and they were not afraid
- 5:44to disobey the King's command. It was by faith that Moses, when
- 5:49he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter.
- 5:53He chose to share the oppression of God's people.
- 5:56Instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin.
- 5:59He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ
- 6:02and to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead
- 6:06to his great reward. It was by faith that Moses left
- 6:11the land of Egypt, not fearing the King's anger.
- 6:14He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who
- 6:19was invisible. It was by faith that Moses
- 6:22commanded the people of Israel to keep the Passover and to
- 6:26sprinkle blood on the door posts so that the Angel of death would
- 6:30not kill their first born sons. It was by faith that the people
- 6:34of Israel went right through the Red Sea as though they were on
- 6:38dry ground, but when the Egyptians tried to follow, they
- 6:42were all drowned. It was by faith that the people
- 6:46of Israel marched around Jericho for seven days and the walls
- 6:50came crashing down. It was by faith that Rahab the
- 6:54prostitute was not destroyed with the people in her city who
- 6:58refused to obey God, for she had given a friendly welcome to the
- 7:02spies. How much more do I need to say?
- 7:06It would take too long to recount the stories of faith of
- 7:09Gideon, Barack, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and all
- 7:15the prophets. By faith, these people overthrew
- 7:19kingdoms, ruled with justice, and receive what God had
- 7:23promised them. They shut the mouths of lines,
- 7:26quenched the flames of fire, and escaped death by the edge of the
- 7:30sword. Their weakness was turned to
- 7:33strength. They became strong in battle and
- 7:37put whole armies to flight. Women received their loved ones
- 7:41back again from death, but others were tortured, refusing
- 7:47to turn from God in order to be set free.
- 7:50They placed their hope in a better life after the
- 7:52resurrection. Some were jeered at and the
- 7:55backs were cut open with whips. Others were chained in prisons.
- 8:01Some died by stoning, some were sawn in half, and others were
- 8:05killed with the sword. Some went about wearing skins of
- 8:09sheep and goats. Destitute and oppressed and
- 8:12mistreated, they were too good for this world, wandering over
- 8:17deserts and mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.
- 8:22All these people earned a good reputation because of their
- 8:26faith, yet none of them received all that God had promised.
- 8:31For God had something better in mind for us so that they would
- 8:35not reach perfection without us. Ah, Jesus, we hear these
- 8:49incredible stories of ordinary people hearing your prompting
- 8:55and stepping out in faith. Holy Spirit, open the ears of
- 9:00our heart. Open the eyes of our hearts so
- 9:03that we can see You and hear You in Your prompting to us, and
- 9:08then boldly step out in faith. And Lord, as we do that, give us
- 9:15the knowledge that through these actions of faith, you may well
- 9:20overthrow kingdoms, rule with justice, shut the mouths of
- 9:25lines, and quench the flames of fire, because that is just all
- 9:30in a day's work for you. But Lord, may we also know that
- 9:34even though we step out in faith, sometimes it may not end
- 9:38well and sometimes it may just feel empty and pointless and
- 9:42frustrating and belittling. But Lord, we do it anyway.
- 9:48Give us your persistence and bravery and strength and above
- 9:54all, faith to continue to step out for you and live for you and
- 10:00your Kingdom. And we look forward to the day
- 10:03when we step from this life into your everlasting embrace.
- 10:09O our loving, forgiving and kind God, We pray all of this through
- 10:14the saving name of your Son, Jesus, Amen.
