- 0:47Speaker 3: Hello Catherine, Hi, Chelsea, you're about to be traveling.
- 0:51Speaker 4: You are traveling.
- 0:52Speaker 5: I am traveling.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I have just left in Nantucket.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Oh yes, Yaminika and I were in Nantucket. We had
- 0:59Speaker 2: two shows here here, we had a show at the
- 1:01Speaker 2: Comedy Melody Tent, and now I'm off to Wimbledon.
- 1:05Speaker 4: That's very exciting, but I will.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Be performing tennis.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Oh, I'm gonna do the first serve.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Sabena Williams is returning to the singles tennis and I
- 1:14Speaker 2: am too amazing returning. I'm debuting at fifty one. I
- 1:18Speaker 2: figured why.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Not listen challenge yourself.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But I'm bringing Megan Gaily, who's a comedian whopes for me.
- 1:24Speaker 2: It's her dream to go to go to Wimbledon, so
- 1:27Speaker 2: I'm bringing her. She's coming for like two days and
- 1:30Speaker 2: then I'm going on it. Yeah, I'm going to be
- 1:31Speaker 2: in London for a few days and then I'm going
- 1:33Speaker 2: to go on a nice boat and then I'm going
- 1:35Speaker 2: to go to Spanish immersion school.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Oh oh in Spain.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I'm guessing Madrid. Yes, Spanish school.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I love it.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I think that's going to like catapult your Spanish.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I know that's what I'm hoping. I think I might
- 1:47Speaker 2: do it for like two weeks straight. I mean, we'll
- 1:49Speaker 2: see if I can last that long. Yeah, but it's
- 1:51Speaker 2: like six.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Hours a day.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Well, you speak enough too that if someone like, if
- 1:54Speaker 3: it's totally immersive and they're just speaking Spanish, you like, you'll.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Be totally immersive. I'm staying at a nice hotel.
- 1:59Speaker 5: I love to listen.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I looked into the possibility and I was like, this
- 2:06Speaker 2: is better. If I have my own bar and restaurant
- 2:09Speaker 2: every night, that's okay, I want to hook up or
- 2:12Speaker 2: you know, bounce around town. It's Madrid in the summertime,
- 2:15Speaker 2: so it's to be popping. So I'm excited about it.
- 2:18Speaker 2: It's going to be a Chelsea classic Chelsea adventure.
- 2:22Speaker 4: But I agree with that.
- 2:23Speaker 3: It's like you can work your brain during the day
- 2:25Speaker 3: and then at night you can party and have fun.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Any blush if you need.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Yes exactly, or we'll practice my Spanish, my procace listen.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I've always been looking for a man with a language
- 2:33Speaker 2: barrier so perfect. Yeah, I think that this might be
- 2:36Speaker 2: an opportunity for multiple things.
- 2:38Speaker 5: Well.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Our guest today is a legendary comic and actress. Her
- 2:42Speaker 3: new special, Wanda Sykes Legacy is on Netflix now.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Okay, I love it, love it, love it.
- 2:47Speaker 2: The woman who has her new stand up special out
- 2:50Speaker 2: on Netflix called Legacy, which is a plus plus, is
- 2:54Speaker 2: joining us here today. Wanda Sykes is here. Hi, Wanda, Hi,
- 2:58Speaker 2: how you doing This? Is our producer Catherine Hey, Catherine, Hi,
- 3:02Speaker 2: how are you?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Where are we where are you zooming in from?
- 3:05Speaker 2: Are you at the opening of the Obama Library today
- 3:07Speaker 2: in Chicago?
- 3:08Speaker 5: Wanda, I wish, I wish I could have been there,
- 3:11Speaker 5: But actually I was in Costco while that was going on.
- 3:14Speaker 5: I was in the middle of Costco, like just sobbing.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Why oh because because of the speeches.
- 3:21Speaker 5: Yeah, oh yeah, Actually the Eddie veteran the kids took
- 3:25Speaker 5: me out.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Oh, I haven't had I've been recording all day, so
- 3:28Speaker 2: we haven't seen I haven't seen that part, ye, but
- 3:30Speaker 2: I saw the show Obama's speech talking to him about
- 3:34Speaker 2: how great he is, because you know, throughout all of
- 3:36Speaker 2: our time with the Obamas, she's always kind of like,
- 3:40Speaker 2: this is a regular guy, you know, like I want
- 3:42Speaker 2: to make sure he keeps his feet on the ground.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Like she always kind of gives that kind of energy,
- 3:47Speaker 2: you know, like I'm pissed about being in the White House.
- 3:50Speaker 1: You maybe do this, and now you know, now I
- 3:53Speaker 1: gotta deal with all the shit.
- 3:54Speaker 2: So it was so and of course you loves this man, obviously,
- 3:58Speaker 2: but to hear obviously, I mean, we all love him too,
- 4:02Speaker 2: but to hear her talk about him in that way
- 4:05Speaker 2: was so beautiful and honestly right on fucking time.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Hm. Absolutely, absolutely, it was great. Wait do you see
- 4:13Speaker 5: Eddy veteran? These kids?
- 4:14Speaker 1: Oh man, really, what happens? Give us a preview? Tell
- 4:17Speaker 1: me yeah.
- 4:18Speaker 5: They composed a song, an original song, just for the
- 4:22Speaker 5: occasion and along with these these local kids, and it
- 4:27Speaker 5: was just incredible.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Oh, I can't wait to see that. I can't wait
- 4:31Speaker 2: to see that, Wanda. I love your news special. You
- 4:34Speaker 2: better get an Emmy nomination for it. It's so great.
- 4:38Speaker 2: One of the things I admire the most about you,
- 4:40Speaker 2: I realized, I know, I found out a lot about
- 4:42Speaker 2: you doing the research for this, but that I didn't
- 4:45Speaker 2: realize I knew because I've known you for so many years,
- 4:47Speaker 2: but I don't really know you well. But one of
- 4:50Speaker 2: the things that I've admired about you for as long
- 4:53Speaker 2: as I have known you is just how political you
- 4:56Speaker 2: are and how you talk about politics and your specials.
- 4:59Speaker 2: So many comedians really try to steer clear of that
- 5:02Speaker 2: and instead just show up at the White House for
- 5:04Speaker 2: a UFC fight and act like they don't know anything
- 5:07Speaker 2: about politics.
- 5:08Speaker 1: So it's really what what?
- 5:10Speaker 5: Oh this is the White House? The president lives here.
- 5:14Speaker 5: Oh wow, I didn't know? Oh who knew?
- 5:18Speaker 1: And I love what you said. I was watching your
- 5:21Speaker 1: Vulture interview.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I love that interviewer, the guy that interviewed you for Vulture,
- 5:25Speaker 2: He interviewed heat He asks the best fucking questions, don't you.
- 5:28Speaker 5: Think he does? He's great.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah, he really does his research.
- 5:32Speaker 2: But I watch your Vulture interview and he was asking you,
- 5:34Speaker 2: you know, about your political stance and do you feel
- 5:37Speaker 2: how you feel about being political? Do you ever get scared?
- 5:40Speaker 2: And I thought that was a really interesting question and
- 5:43Speaker 2: and what you said about it. So I would love
- 5:45Speaker 2: to just talk a little bit about that, like how
- 5:48Speaker 2: you frame that and how you view being political, because
- 5:51Speaker 2: I'm sure you know that I feel very strongly about,
- 5:54Speaker 2: you know, the stuff that you're talking about too, And
- 5:56Speaker 2: I feel like it's a responsibility, not an option.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Absolutely. I mean I think that's that's our you know,
- 6:02Speaker 5: what we're supposed to do. And and honestly, and those
- 6:05Speaker 5: are the comedians that resonate with me. I feel like
- 6:09Speaker 5: we're like the Daredevil's kind of like we're the ones
- 6:11Speaker 5: who are supposed to go out and give a voice
- 6:14Speaker 5: to the people who are marginalized. And I happen to
- 6:19Speaker 5: check a lot of boxes in those margins. You know,
- 6:24Speaker 5: being a woman, being you know, African American, being queer.
- 6:29Speaker 5: So it's just it's just to me, that's that's what
- 6:32Speaker 5: I'm meant to, you know, I would feel weird if
- 6:35Speaker 5: I went out there and just talked about I don't know,
- 6:38Speaker 5: just everyday stuff and not about what's really affecting me
- 6:42Speaker 5: in my life and everyone else.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel the same way.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I feel like it's such a and I've learned a
- 6:49Speaker 2: lot over the years of when it's important to say
- 6:52Speaker 2: something and when it's just kind of noise, you know,
- 6:55Speaker 2: and when to pitch in and to be a little
- 6:57Speaker 2: bit more I guess, discerning out, you know, saying things
- 7:01Speaker 2: so it's not like you're just banging the same drum
- 7:04Speaker 2: all the time. To have an artfulness about it, which
- 7:07Speaker 2: I've really started to grown to appreciate and understand more
- 7:10Speaker 2: as I've gotten older. So that's been helpful because obviously
- 7:14Speaker 2: we're all living through this. But I feel the same
- 7:16Speaker 2: way about comics who don't address it, who don't want
- 7:18Speaker 2: to talk about politics.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Or can't say anything.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I'd rather you be emphatically against what we're saying and
- 7:26Speaker 2: be honest about that than trying to pretend you don't
- 7:28Speaker 2: know what's going on. I find that to be in
- 7:30Speaker 2: affront to all beat like to humanity.
- 7:33Speaker 1: But while I was doing this.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Reading about you, I had no idea you were married
- 7:37Speaker 2: to a man at some point.
- 7:39Speaker 1: What were you thinking? I can't believe I didn't know
- 7:42Speaker 1: this about you.
- 7:46Speaker 5: I'm just trying to fit in for years. I was
- 7:48Speaker 5: trying to fit in, you know. I heard that was
- 7:51Speaker 5: the way to go. I heard that was the way
- 7:53Speaker 5: to go.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Oh my god, how long did that last? Wanda?
- 7:56Speaker 5: I chose that lifestyle to I really did.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I would love to see some photographs from that era
- 8:04Speaker 2: of your life.
- 8:06Speaker 1: No, what how long did that last?
- 8:09Speaker 5: Oh? Wow, that that lasted? What I good? Lord? Maybe
- 8:14Speaker 5: six seven years?
- 8:16Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 8:16Speaker 2: And when you did you when you left that marriage,
- 8:19Speaker 2: did you tell him that you're not in a men
- 8:22Speaker 2: or was it just him personal?
- 8:24Speaker 5: And you know what, that wasn't even why it ended.
- 8:28Speaker 5: I think it just was. It just was a bad situation,
- 8:32Speaker 5: bad relationship. Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And that you grew up on an army with an
- 8:35Speaker 2: army father. I had no idea about that either. That's crazy.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Yeah. My dad's a retired colonel.
- 8:41Speaker 2: So that must have been a really kind of very
- 8:44Speaker 2: specific strict upbringing, do.
- 8:46Speaker 5: You know what? Not really the way my dad approached
- 8:50Speaker 5: it is. I mean, you know, he took his job seriously,
- 8:53Speaker 5: but when you know, he came home, he took off
- 8:56Speaker 5: the uniform and you know, read the paper chilled and
- 9:01Speaker 5: he was just he was just dad. You know. It
- 9:04Speaker 5: wasn't make your bed and tighten the corners and all
- 9:07Speaker 5: that stuff like that. No, we but just but just
- 9:10Speaker 5: being and you know, growing up in Virginia with you know,
- 9:15Speaker 5: black parents, it's it's strict already. It really the army.
- 9:19Speaker 5: It was nothing else that the army could do. Really honestly,
- 9:24Speaker 5: I really don't know what else the army could have done.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Like what kind of rules did they have for you
- 9:28Speaker 1: growing up?
- 9:29Speaker 5: It was mainly like respect and u you know was
- 9:33Speaker 5: it was yes sir, no ma'am and you know you
- 9:39Speaker 5: cleaned up and you had we had chores and everything.
- 9:42Speaker 5: But it was mainly just like just a lot of
- 9:45Speaker 5: behavior and you know, you don't you don't act up
- 9:48Speaker 5: in school. You know, you get good grades and do
- 9:52Speaker 5: your homework, say your grace before you eat, and you
- 9:56Speaker 5: know church on Sundays.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Did you like going to church? I did?
- 10:00Speaker 5: I did? Do you go still I go online covid.
- 10:08Speaker 5: Covid was great man with the online church. I was
- 10:12Speaker 5: going to church all over the country, you know, here,
- 10:15Speaker 5: popping there, you see what they're doing over here, you know.
- 10:19Speaker 5: But I finally joined the church and it's it's in Alexandria, Virginia.
- 10:24Speaker 5: So I you know, when I'm in town, I go,
- 10:26Speaker 5: I pop in.
- 10:27Speaker 1: That's nice. And does Alex go with you?
- 10:30Speaker 5: No, No, she's.
- 10:32Speaker 2: She's French, she's she's friends. The whole special is like,
- 10:37Speaker 2: I love that you have her smoking cigarettes only to
- 10:40Speaker 2: reveal that she doesn't smoke cigarettes at the end.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Not at all. But it's just how I've always seen her.
- 10:46Speaker 5: I've always seen her just.
- 10:49Speaker 2: So she's French, so she's not interested in church. But
- 10:52Speaker 2: you so that's interesting that you still go to church
- 10:54Speaker 2: and that you're back in Virginia.
- 10:55Speaker 5: I'm all French people don't go, well, most of them don't.
- 10:59Speaker 5: It's not that you're don't talk about it. But you
- 11:01Speaker 5: know what, there's so many churches in Europe, especially like
- 11:05Speaker 5: in France, there's tons of churches. I mean, look they
- 11:09Speaker 5: have not they got you know.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Yeah, but their churches.
- 11:12Speaker 2: The churches want to seem like historical but their churches
- 11:16Speaker 2: seem like a relic from the past because half of
- 11:19Speaker 2: those churches you go into, it's like it's tourists, right,
- 11:22Speaker 2: you know, like Lasagrada and Barcelona. You're like, oh my God,
- 11:25Speaker 2: and then you're like, wait, you forget that you're actually
- 11:27Speaker 2: in a place of worship.
- 11:29Speaker 5: Right, It's more like a museum, I guess.
- 11:32Speaker 1: But it's interesting that what about the kids. Do the
- 11:34Speaker 1: kids ever go to church with you?
- 11:35Speaker 5: They've been a couple of times with me, yeah, but
- 11:39Speaker 5: but not really.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Okay, Well, I think it's interesting when people return to
- 11:42Speaker 2: their roots.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Like I've failed at that. That's that's one thing I go, Oh, man,
- 11:47Speaker 5: I didn't make my kids go to church.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I think in these modern times we're living in, it
- 11:51Speaker 2: would be a pretty big feat to get two kids
- 11:53Speaker 2: to go to church.
- 11:54Speaker 5: I know.
- 11:54Speaker 2: But I do think this like returned to like you
- 11:57Speaker 2: return to the church. Like, it's very interesting at the
- 12:00Speaker 2: phase of life that you're in that these things are
- 12:04Speaker 2: still in your life, or that you've returned to them.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Don't you do you ever think about that?
- 12:08Speaker 5: Well? I think it's what keeps me grounded. I guess
- 12:11Speaker 5: I'm not not necessarily grounded. It's just my it's my base,
- 12:15Speaker 5: It's where I'm comfortable. It's not really grant, it's my
- 12:19Speaker 5: support really, yeah, it's my foundation. So it was pretty easy,
- 12:25Speaker 5: I guess to ease back into it.
- 12:27Speaker 1: And does Alex like Virginia as a French woman.
- 12:30Speaker 5: I don't think she has an opinion. You don't she
- 12:36Speaker 5: would would she preferred to South of France? Absolutely?
- 12:46Speaker 1: What about La?
- 12:46Speaker 2: What do you think about La and living in La?
- 12:49Speaker 2: Because don't you go back and forth?
- 12:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I still have my place in La. Yeah, I
- 12:53Speaker 5: like it out there. I like it out in LA.
- 12:56Speaker 5: I have great friends out there. It's funny. When I'm there,
- 12:59Speaker 5: it's like I'm working and I feel like I'm in
- 13:02Speaker 5: show business. And when I'm in Philadelphia, I go, oh,
- 13:06Speaker 5: you know, I'm in Philly.
- 13:08Speaker 2: You know.
- 13:09Speaker 5: Sometimes I've been out you know, like gardening or whatever,
- 13:13Speaker 5: and I just go, I wonder how much money I'm
- 13:15Speaker 5: losing right now just out here not doing show business stuff.
- 13:21Speaker 6: You know.
- 13:22Speaker 5: But but it's good because that's that's where I get creative.
- 13:26Speaker 5: That's where you know, I'm I have my boots on
- 13:29Speaker 5: the ground as far as what's actually happening.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I find LA. Don't you feel like everyone in
- 13:35Speaker 1: LA has gotten sober.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Oh wow, you gotta hang out with my friends.
- 13:40Speaker 2: There's a lot of sober people in LA. Now, there's
- 13:43Speaker 2: a lot.
- 13:44Speaker 5: You're right, You're right, and you know it's I think
- 13:46Speaker 5: it's our peers and we're all worried about our livers now, right.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I know, But I don't. I'm never going to give
- 13:52Speaker 1: up drinking, do you know what I mean?
- 13:53Speaker 5: Like, it's so No, I'm not doing that.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I know you're on the same team.
- 13:57Speaker 5: I'm on with you drinking. I'm I'm still ting buck.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:01Speaker 2: And if that takes me down, then so be it.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Like then that's the way it's going to go down.
- 14:05Speaker 2: But I went to three dinners last week and a
- 14:08Speaker 2: total of eleven people were at three of these dinners
- 14:12Speaker 2: and I was the only person drinking at.
- 14:15Speaker 1: All three dinners. Oh wow, yes.
- 14:18Speaker 2: And I was like, wow, look what's become of us?
- 14:21Speaker 2: I said, look at everyone. Everyone's sober and not not
- 14:23Speaker 2: that people. Only one of the women was sober. The
- 14:28Speaker 2: others just had no interest in alcohol. And I was baffled.
- 14:32Speaker 7: What were they?
- 14:33Speaker 5: What were the old weed?
- 14:34Speaker 1: No? No, but I was on weed and alcohol.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Somebody's got to bring the party.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Yes, somebody's got to bring the party.
- 14:41Speaker 4: I mean, god, yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Where do you do stage time?
- 14:45Speaker 2: Because when I saw you at Jane Fonda's thing, we
- 14:47Speaker 2: both saw each other at a Jane Fonda event for
- 14:49Speaker 2: a Climate Her Climate Pack.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Jane is.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I know, Jane is a really good friend of yours,
- 14:54Speaker 2: and she's a really great friend of mine as well.
- 14:56Speaker 2: And this woman is tireless in her efforts I have.
- 15:00Speaker 2: I've never seen anything like it in my entire life.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I've never seen anybody work as hard.
- 15:03Speaker 1: As Jane fonder works.
- 15:05Speaker 5: Can't name a person, can't name one. She's I mean incredible.
- 15:09Speaker 5: I really think she was put on this earth to
- 15:11Speaker 5: make us all feel bad about ourselves. Really.
- 15:13Speaker 2: She told me that she makes a hundred calls before
- 15:16Speaker 2: noon every single day to raise money for Climate her
- 15:19Speaker 2: Climate Pack.
- 15:20Speaker 1: One hundred, one hundred calls per day.
- 15:23Speaker 4: That's wild by noon.
- 15:26Speaker 2: I mean, can you imagine being that annoying and having
- 15:28Speaker 2: to call people and ask them for money one hundred
- 15:31Speaker 2: times a day. I would be like, forget it, forget
- 15:34Speaker 2: about the climate. I don't have it in me.
- 15:37Speaker 5: I can't see myself doing that, especially at Jane's age.
- 15:41Speaker 5: I'm like, let the sun Win, what do I care?
- 15:45Speaker 1: You know, how did you guys first meet on Monster
- 15:50Speaker 1: in Law?
- 15:50Speaker 8: Was it?
- 15:51Speaker 5: Yeah? Monster in Law?
- 15:52Speaker 1: So what was your first interaction?
- 15:54Speaker 5: Like incredible. I was so nervous because you know, it's
- 15:59Speaker 5: Jane Fonda and this was her first project since she
- 16:04Speaker 5: kind of like semi retired. So I'm like, oh my god,
- 16:08Speaker 5: you know, all my scenes are with her, what is
- 16:10Speaker 5: this gonna be like? And she walked in and she
- 16:15Speaker 5: just was like Wanda and just gave me a big
- 16:18Speaker 5: hug and was like, I'm Jane Fonda. And I'm like, like,
- 16:22Speaker 5: we didn't know that, but okay, and she's like I am,
- 16:25Speaker 5: you know, just so excited to work with you. And
- 16:27Speaker 5: she was just so gracious and just you know, she's like,
- 16:32Speaker 5: you're gonna have to help me out a lot because
- 16:33Speaker 5: it's been a while since I've you know, done this.
- 16:35Speaker 5: I'm like, okay, now it's a little patronizing, but all right, Okay,
- 16:41Speaker 5: I appreciate it. I appreciate like this is a sweet
- 16:45Speaker 5: she's just a sweetheart, really just genuine good just a good,
- 16:49Speaker 5: good woman.
- 16:50Speaker 2: I mean, you've done a lot of acting work and
- 16:52Speaker 2: you're in a lot of so I love you and
- 16:54Speaker 2: the other two. I mean, that is so fucking funny
- 16:56Speaker 2: that show. Uh, how do you decide when you're gonna
- 16:59Speaker 2: do stuff and you're going to do a special when
- 17:01Speaker 2: you're gonna take on a TV show? Or do you
- 17:04Speaker 2: just wait for opportunities to present themselves.
- 17:06Speaker 5: That's usually how it happens. Opportunities present themselves. Or I
- 17:11Speaker 5: come up with an ida and I go, oh, I think,
- 17:13Speaker 5: I'm yeah, let me try this. I want to let
- 17:15Speaker 5: me see if I can get this one. You know,
- 17:17Speaker 5: get this up and go on. Far as the specials,
- 17:21Speaker 5: you kind of know, right, I mean, you you get
- 17:24Speaker 5: the material going and and then you get to the
- 17:26Speaker 5: points like I think I got something, and then it's
- 17:29Speaker 5: like I need when I feel like I'm like six
- 17:33Speaker 5: months away, then I'll then I'll tell my agent, hey,
- 17:37Speaker 5: let's you know, let's do a special, because then that'll
- 17:39Speaker 5: at least give me another year to work on it.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:44Speaker 2: I think specials are really specific to each comedian, Like
- 17:47Speaker 2: how many times you have to run a set? How
- 17:50Speaker 2: many times you have to do it. Some people feel
- 17:52Speaker 2: like they have to do it two hundred times. There
- 17:54Speaker 2: are comedians who can do it fifty times and then
- 17:57Speaker 2: be ready for a special. But I loved the open
- 18:00Speaker 2: sequence because she went back to Hampton. Uh is it
- 18:03Speaker 2: Hampton College or Hampton University.
- 18:04Speaker 5: Hampton University, Hampton University.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Which and there's the opening sequence is so beautifully shot.
- 18:10Speaker 2: And who's like, was that your director's idea? Was that
- 18:12Speaker 2: your idea?
- 18:13Speaker 5: Yeah, Julie dashed. Yeah, I wanted something saying I'm coming
- 18:16Speaker 5: back home. And you know, she did that amazing movie
- 18:20Speaker 5: Daughters of the Dust, so she was like, I'm you know,
- 18:23Speaker 5: she put together the storyboard and I was like, this
- 18:25Speaker 5: is it. This is exactly what I wanted. You know,
- 18:27Speaker 5: I wanted the band, I wanted the choir. Uh so yeah,
- 18:31Speaker 5: she she nailed it, and it's just yeah, I think
- 18:33Speaker 5: it's beautiful.
- 18:34Speaker 1: It'stif Yeah, it's beautiful.
- 18:35Speaker 2: And you could tell how impactful it was because you're
- 18:37Speaker 2: pretty emotional, as you should be.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Bringing that home is really profound. What number special is
- 18:42Speaker 1: this for you?
- 18:43Speaker 5: I think seven? Wow? I think it's seven. Yeah.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Seven?
- 18:47Speaker 2: And you haven't won an Emmy yet for a stand
- 18:49Speaker 2: up special or have you?
- 18:51Speaker 5: No A lot of nominations but no win.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Okay, well, let's hope that this fucking brings it home.
- 18:58Speaker 1: How do you feel I want to.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Ask you a question about like being a female in comedy,
- 19:03Speaker 2: coming from another female rather than a man asking this question,
- 19:06Speaker 2: because we get asked the same questions all the time
- 19:09Speaker 2: from men. But I want to ask you about like
- 19:13Speaker 2: your competitive spirit or your competitive nature and how you
- 19:17Speaker 2: see that, how that's changed over the years for you,
- 19:21Speaker 2: and do you view that as a good thing or
- 19:24Speaker 2: do you view it as a negative thing.
- 19:26Speaker 5: I don't look at it as a competitive thing. I
- 19:29Speaker 5: I compete with myself.
- 19:31Speaker 6: You know.
- 19:31Speaker 5: It's like, so my next special it has to be better,
- 19:35Speaker 5: better than Legacy, And I'm already going I don't know
- 19:39Speaker 5: how I'm gonna do that because this one was so meaningful,
- 19:43Speaker 5: So like, what's what is the next one going to be?
- 19:47Speaker 5: But I think like whatever whatever happens, like whatever happens
- 19:52Speaker 5: in November, whatever happens in two years from now, will
- 19:57Speaker 5: you know, maybe that'll be something that will inspire the
- 20:02Speaker 5: next one. Or maybe I'll be like, hey, fuck it,
- 20:04Speaker 5: that's it, and I did Legacy. I'm done. You know
- 20:06Speaker 5: who knows? But yeah, I don't. I don't look at
- 20:10Speaker 5: it as as competing because if you do that, I
- 20:12Speaker 5: think you're gonna get out of who you are, you know,
- 20:15Speaker 5: as far as your voice. I don't want to look
- 20:19Speaker 5: at somebody else's special and go oh I can do
- 20:23Speaker 5: that and then start taking on these elements that that
- 20:29Speaker 5: aren't really authentic to me. But I could pull it off,
- 20:32Speaker 5: but I don't, you know, so I don't. Yeah, I
- 20:36Speaker 5: try not to. I try not to do that. However,
- 20:39Speaker 5: I will say that there's you know, like for me,
- 20:42Speaker 5: the one who did it was Chris Rock when he
- 20:45Speaker 5: did Bring the Pain to me, that elevated comedy, where
- 20:51Speaker 5: it challenged me, where I said, I got to do
- 20:54Speaker 5: better and so if so, if I look at that
- 20:58Speaker 5: as a competition, yeah, but to me, it was more
- 21:00Speaker 5: like a challenge, not you know, I gotta do you know,
- 21:05Speaker 5: be better whatever than what he was doing.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Like it inspired you to want to like create something
- 21:10Speaker 2: like what about what about Bring the Pain specifically? Was
- 21:14Speaker 2: it the like the sentiment of it or was there
- 21:17Speaker 2: something more specific? I mean, obviously that was an incredible
- 21:20Speaker 2: special I think he wanted to be made for that, right right.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Yeah, No, I mean no one was doing that. We
- 21:27Speaker 5: were all not really talking about anything. It was, you know,
- 21:32Speaker 5: just a lot of sex jokes and black people do this,
- 21:35Speaker 5: White people do that, and I don't know, it was
- 21:38Speaker 5: just kind of like comedy was just kind of it
- 21:40Speaker 5: just like deaf Jam was hot. Deaf Jam was hot,
- 21:44Speaker 5: which was good because we got a lot of great
- 21:46Speaker 5: voices from that, great you know, funny comics from that.
- 21:49Speaker 5: But Chris, I think he brought it back. He brought
- 21:53Speaker 5: it back to for me, like you know, prior and
- 21:58Speaker 5: Carlin and back in net Line.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's definitely an evolution that happens. And
- 22:07Speaker 2: we're living during a time where we're seeing it a lot.
- 22:09Speaker 2: And I love the time we're living in for the
- 22:12Speaker 2: reason because there are so many female comics that are
- 22:16Speaker 2: killing it and crushing it. It's like so nice to
- 22:19Speaker 2: finally have so many people to reference. And point two
- 22:23Speaker 2: when people ask you what is it like to be
- 22:25Speaker 2: you know, what was it like to be one of
- 22:27Speaker 2: the only women? And it's like we were never.
- 22:29Speaker 1: I was never in a situation where I was the
- 22:31Speaker 1: only woman.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I'd be on a lineup where I was the only woman,
- 22:34Speaker 2: but I was not the only woman, you know, Like
- 22:37Speaker 2: and to see it now where there's so many people
- 22:39Speaker 2: that you can refer to and and speak to, and
- 22:42Speaker 2: you when somebody asks you who should we be looking
- 22:45Speaker 2: at You're like, oh, this is so fucking nice. It
- 22:47Speaker 2: actually has changed since we've been on the scene, you know,
- 22:51Speaker 2: to see that evolution. And then also I think personally
- 22:55Speaker 2: for each comic, like as women, I feel that even
- 22:59Speaker 2: more that you have such a you know, you have
- 23:02Speaker 2: different periods of your life. I'm fifty one, I think
- 23:05Speaker 2: you're sixty two now, right, yes, And like you're speaking
- 23:09Speaker 2: of that, like you're talking a lot about the twins
- 23:11Speaker 2: in this special. You're talking about them and they you know,
- 23:15Speaker 2: you talk about spanking, you talk about what, you know,
- 23:17Speaker 2: the impact that they've had on your life. But the
- 23:20Speaker 2: fact that they're going to be out of the house soon.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Probably they're going to go to college in a year
- 23:23Speaker 2: or two years and a year, yeah, and a year.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Are you looking forward to that period of time?
- 23:28Speaker 5: You know what I am? And Alex got upset with
- 23:33Speaker 5: me because I said that. I think I was on
- 23:35Speaker 5: Jimmy Kevil or what are these shows? And I said,
- 23:40Speaker 5: I'm excited about I'm looking forward to and she and
- 23:43Speaker 5: that upset her because she I guess she took it
- 23:46Speaker 5: as like I want the kids gone, But to me,
- 23:50Speaker 5: it's like, yeah, I did you know we did it.
- 23:53Speaker 5: We you know, we raised these kids and now they're
- 23:56Speaker 5: equipped and they're ready to go to the next stage.
- 24:02Speaker 5: And I love that idea, and also like the idea
- 24:06Speaker 5: of the two of us back to just us. You know,
- 24:11Speaker 5: where every night is date night. You know, it doesn't
- 24:15Speaker 5: have to be all this. Okay, I gotta go do
- 24:18Speaker 5: this and you got to drop this one off and whatever.
- 24:21Speaker 5: I look forward to that.
- 24:22Speaker 1: What if when both of the kids went off to school.
- 24:25Speaker 2: What if in order to have the freedom that you desire,
- 24:28Speaker 2: you had to spend one month, you and Alex had
- 24:31Speaker 2: to spend one month.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Living at your house.
- 24:33Speaker 2: And you can choose one of these three people that
- 24:35Speaker 2: would move in with you for just one month, and
- 24:38Speaker 2: then you would be free of them for the rest
- 24:40Speaker 2: of your life and the kid and then you could
- 24:42Speaker 2: have your private time.
- 24:43Speaker 1: I'll give you three options.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Megan Kelly or Ivanka Trump. One of
- 24:54Speaker 2: those three people has to live with you in order
- 24:56Speaker 2: for your kids to have successful lives.
- 24:58Speaker 1: That's the price you have to pay.
- 25:00Speaker 2: They're going to go to college, they're gonna get jobs,
- 25:02Speaker 2: and they're gonna be happy, high functioning adults.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Who do you choose. Think about it, nightmare, blunt rotation,
- 25:11Speaker 1: nightmare blood.
- 25:13Speaker 5: How bad would their lives be if I didn't do this?
- 25:17Speaker 1: Bad bad. You don't know, and you can't risk it.
- 25:20Speaker 1: You can't risk it. You have to choose one of
- 25:22Speaker 1: these women.
- 25:23Speaker 5: Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna go. I'm going to Vanka Trump.
- 25:30Speaker 1: It's an interesting choice. Okay, and tell us why I think.
- 25:34Speaker 5: I could break her in like two weeks, give me
- 25:38Speaker 5: two weeks. I break her, and she's gonna tell me something.
- 25:43Speaker 5: She's gonna give up something.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Yeah, she's what I'm saying.
- 25:46Speaker 5: I'm gonna get something out of her. I really, I'm going.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. But you're not allowed to
- 25:52Speaker 1: be physically violent with any of these people.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Oh, spiritual conversation.
- 25:57Speaker 1: You can be spiritually violation.
- 26:00Speaker 5: No, no, no, I won't. I won't put my hands
- 26:02Speaker 5: on it. Just conversation. Okay, I'll get something out of her,
- 26:07Speaker 5: all right.
- 26:07Speaker 1: I like the choice of Ivanka Trovoice.
- 26:10Speaker 5: I'm a fine. I'm a fine. Out will all the
- 26:12Speaker 5: bodies are buried.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Do you think she even knows where all the bodies
- 26:15Speaker 2: are buried? I mean, I don't even think she knows
- 26:17Speaker 2: what the fuck is going on. I mean with this
- 26:20Speaker 2: whole Albania thing, it's like.
- 26:22Speaker 5: Oh my god, she did that island. She did discovered
- 26:25Speaker 5: she Christopher Columbus.
- 26:30Speaker 1: There was a cartoon.
- 26:31Speaker 2: I don't know if you saw this on Instagram, but
- 26:34Speaker 2: there was a cartoon of her swimming like that. You know,
- 26:36Speaker 2: she tells the story like Albania wouldn't even have known
- 26:39Speaker 2: that she bought that island if she hadn't done that interview.
- 26:42Speaker 1: That's like some shit.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I would both like I out myself before I get caught,
- 26:45Speaker 2: you know. And and they did this cartoon of her
- 26:48Speaker 2: swimming and then she swims to the island and they
- 26:51Speaker 2: climbed to the top and they're like, I think we'll
- 26:52Speaker 2: buy it. But what the Albanian people have done has
- 26:55Speaker 2: been inspirational.
- 26:57Speaker 5: Oh beautiful, beautiful, Oh give yeah.
- 27:00Speaker 2: And they're beautiful with the because people are going to Albedia,
- 27:03Speaker 2: like you know, that's becoming a hotspot for travel.
- 27:06Speaker 1: So I'm pretty proud of them.
- 27:07Speaker 2: And they've inspired Americans because it seems like we're all
- 27:10Speaker 2: sitting around with our thumbs up, our asses, looking around,
- 27:13Speaker 2: going who's gonna tell us what to do next? And
- 27:15Speaker 2: nobody seems to have any good ideas. Are you hopeful
- 27:18Speaker 2: about the midterms, Wanda.
- 27:20Speaker 5: I am, yeah, I am, I'm very hopeful. Yeah, especially now,
- 27:25Speaker 5: and you know, people are finally speaking up. I mean,
- 27:29Speaker 5: some Republicans are finally speaking up about this Iranian deal.
- 27:32Speaker 5: So but I am, I am, I am hopeful. I
- 27:35Speaker 5: think people are just that've been hit so hard by everything,
- 27:39Speaker 5: so they got they gotta vote, they gotta they got
- 27:42Speaker 5: to step up. Yeah.
- 27:43Speaker 2: And also I think that you know, all this jerrymandering stuff,
- 27:47Speaker 2: like I really do think that's gonna kick back. There
- 27:50Speaker 2: was a state today that voted against it, a Republican
- 27:52Speaker 2: state legislature that said absolutely no to the jerrymandering. So like,
- 27:56Speaker 2: I think that also is going to have some unintended,
- 27:59Speaker 2: not positive consequences for the Republicans.
- 28:02Speaker 1: And I think the people.
- 28:04Speaker 2: That are real maga heads, like those people we just
- 28:06Speaker 2: have to consider is mentally ill. They are exactly well,
- 28:10Speaker 2: it's like racism, you're mentally Like when someone just described
- 28:13Speaker 2: racism to me is mental illness, I was like that
- 28:15Speaker 2: clicked in, and that applies to magas too. It's mental illness.
- 28:19Speaker 2: So there's no cure. We can't help them. It's just
- 28:22Speaker 2: that's the way it's going to be for them. And
- 28:24Speaker 2: forget about those people and trying to flip them. That's pointless.
- 28:27Speaker 2: And yeah, so are you in Philly?
- 28:30Speaker 5: Oh, I'm Philly. When I met Alex she was living here.
- 28:33Speaker 2: So Philly's a fun city. I mean, those people are
- 28:35Speaker 2: fucking scared. I love sports games, Jesus.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:39Speaker 2: We tried to go to something there once and I
- 28:41Speaker 2: was like, oh my god, this is a violent this
- 28:44Speaker 2: is violence.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Get off the streets after the game.
- 28:47Speaker 5: Yeah, we don't play about us sports.
- 28:49Speaker 1: I know, I know which teams? Do you support?
- 28:52Speaker 5: Sixers and Eagles? Yeah?
- 28:54Speaker 1: Yeah, the Eagles are so fun. That is a great
- 28:56Speaker 1: team to support.
- 28:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:58Speaker 1: And do you guys go to games and stuff?
- 29:00Speaker 5: Yeah, we go to games and we're work. We worked
- 29:02Speaker 5: on bringing a WNBA team to Philadelphia and that's going
- 29:07Speaker 5: to happen in twenty thirty.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Oh congratulations, that's fucking awesome.
- 29:12Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 29:13Speaker 1: What's the name of the team, do you know?
- 29:15Speaker 5: We don't know yet. We don't know yet. It's with
- 29:17Speaker 5: the Sixers, in conjunction with you know, the Sixers are
- 29:20Speaker 5: the ones who actually put the bid in. But we're
- 29:22Speaker 5: with our group, the Philadelphia Sisters. We lobbied and we've
- 29:26Speaker 5: been working on this thing for like years, like seven,
- 29:30Speaker 5: it was before COVID, and we was working on this
- 29:33Speaker 5: for a long time to get them to get a team.
- 29:37Speaker 5: And we got a team.
- 29:38Speaker 3: Why.
- 29:38Speaker 1: I fucking love that.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Good for you, congrats, Thank you. We take a couple
- 29:47Speaker 2: of callers and we give advice.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Wanda, are you ready to do that?
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 29:51Speaker 5: Oh sure, I'm great at this.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sure you are.
- 29:53Speaker 2: You have enough life experience and wisdom to shed some
- 29:56Speaker 2: light on some situations.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Yes, you know what. We're gonna start with Kelly.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Kelly, Uh, she's just writing in, but she says, Dear Chelsea,
- 30:07Speaker 3: I a twenty nine year old black female, have been
- 30:09Speaker 3: dating a guy thirty one and notably white.
- 30:11Speaker 4: For about two years, and it's twenty two.
- 30:15Speaker 3: That's come to light that his parents are social and
- 30:18Speaker 3: political idiots who are incapable of critical thinking.
- 30:21Speaker 4: That's right, you guessed it. They're mega vegetables.
- 30:24Speaker 3: It seems as if they think I'm some sort of
- 30:26Speaker 3: Candice Owen's aberration to their racist philosophies. Yet they're never
- 30:30Speaker 3: comfortable overtly discussing politics when he and I are around.
- 30:34Speaker 3: My boyfriend also seems to have gotten the short end
- 30:36Speaker 3: of the evolutionary stick, because he finds it's imperative to
- 30:39Speaker 3: still spend holidays with them, as if it's no big deal.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Two to five times a year, I'm talking spending the
- 30:45Speaker 3: night at their home when we visit, having hour long,
- 30:47Speaker 3: forced topical conversations about shit like beer. I'm unable to
- 30:51Speaker 3: continue faking the funk. And he seems to think that
- 30:54Speaker 3: spending time with his folks is an unsavory yet umbilical
- 30:57Speaker 3: facet of the relationship. Otherwise we're extremely compatible. But also,
- 31:01Speaker 3: I'm young and hot. I need to get out.
- 31:03Speaker 4: Of here if there's going to be no return on
- 31:05Speaker 4: investment of my youth.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Help Kelly get out, Kelly, get out of there. Anyone.
- 31:12Speaker 2: I like the way she termed that biblical, I don't
- 31:14Speaker 2: know that good use of of of a word in
- 31:18Speaker 2: that sense. I would say to get out of that situation,
- 31:21Speaker 2: because anyone who I don't.
- 31:24Speaker 1: I mean, you've.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Dealt with your in laws, but your in laws are
- 31:26Speaker 2: probably cool because they're French, right, Yeah, that's that's that's
- 31:30Speaker 2: not the same thing. But I don't think when somebody
- 31:33Speaker 2: has that kind of relationship that that obligatory relationship where
- 31:38Speaker 2: they want to spend three to five holidays. I mean,
- 31:40Speaker 2: as as soon as we're adults, that's enough with that stuff,
- 31:43Speaker 2: like you don't have to spend Christmas, Thanksgiving and all.
- 31:46Speaker 2: How many I didn't even know there are five spending
- 31:48Speaker 2: flag dating world age life.
- 31:51Speaker 1: That's too much.
- 31:52Speaker 6: Ye?
- 31:53Speaker 5: Well, she said three to she said what two to
- 31:55Speaker 5: five times? Yeah a year, five times a year. All right,
- 32:01Speaker 5: let's let's let's work with it, because because we can
- 32:04Speaker 5: save this man. You know, that's a she's gonna get
- 32:09Speaker 5: a good white man on our side, you know what
- 32:12Speaker 5: I'm saying. Okay, okay, if she dumps them, he might
- 32:17Speaker 5: go back.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Right right, right right.
- 32:19Speaker 2: That's a good angle. That's why you're here, Wanda. Thank
- 32:21Speaker 2: you for that insight.
- 32:22Speaker 5: You know. But to me, if she is really into him,
- 32:27Speaker 5: why don't she just negotiate. Look, I'm gonna make one
- 32:29Speaker 5: trip a year to spend with your dumb parents, and
- 32:34Speaker 5: the other times you you know, you go on your own.
- 32:37Speaker 5: And I mean, I'm sure she has family that she
- 32:39Speaker 5: wants to go see, right yeah, yeah, so yeah, so
- 32:44Speaker 5: let him go see his family. She goes see her family,
- 32:48Speaker 5: she can talk shit about his parents to her family.
- 32:51Speaker 1: That's right. That's a good solution. It's to compromise.
- 32:54Speaker 2: And even if and if for some reason she doesn't
- 32:56Speaker 2: have family, then you can go celebrate those holidays with
- 32:59Speaker 2: your friend or take some mushrooms and celebrate them alone
- 33:02Speaker 2: like I do every fucking Christmas without my family. So
- 33:05Speaker 2: that's that's those are several options are on the table.
- 33:08Speaker 3: And I think when whenever she does go, he has
- 33:11Speaker 3: to make a donation to like some liberal cause like
- 33:14Speaker 3: an abortion fund or something.
- 33:16Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Yeah, speaking of which, Wanda, I heard you talking about
- 33:20Speaker 2: the roast and that you were so glad you didn't
- 33:22Speaker 2: do it.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I mean, I just want.
- 33:24Speaker 2: To reiterate how glad you must be that you didn't
- 33:29Speaker 2: do it.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Oh my god, were you tempted at all to do it?
- 33:34Speaker 5: I was because I thought I was going to be
- 33:36Speaker 5: able to go in and then just get out, and
- 33:40Speaker 5: they were like, no, you have to stay for the
- 33:42Speaker 5: whole thing and and be on it on the dais
- 33:45Speaker 5: And I was like, I can't do that, man, I
- 33:48Speaker 5: can't do it.
- 33:49Speaker 1: But you did great, you really did, oh, thank you?
- 33:52Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah you and Cheryl I thought he had the
- 33:55Speaker 5: best set.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 33:56Speaker 5: I mean, yeah, shot into it and it wasn't just lazy,
- 34:01Speaker 5: you know, just whatever you're short. It was really good. Bravo,
- 34:06Speaker 5: thank you.
- 34:07Speaker 2: What was the reason you did? You couldn't you because
- 34:09Speaker 2: you just couldn't sit there on the dais with those
- 34:11Speaker 2: guys for three hours? Or is there a different Yeah?
- 34:14Speaker 5: Because I knew. I knew what it was going to be, yes,
- 34:16Speaker 5: you know, and I knew where it was going. I
- 34:18Speaker 5: knew it was going to be. And I was like,
- 34:20Speaker 5: somebody's gonna say something real dumb and real ugly, and
- 34:25Speaker 5: either I'm going to get up and walk out and
- 34:27Speaker 5: knock shit over, or you know, I'm gonna, you know,
- 34:32Speaker 5: beat Kevin, you know. Uh, but no I love Kevin.
- 34:36Speaker 5: I got no I got no beef with Kevin at all.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah, Kevin's pretty easy to love.
- 34:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:41Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, our first caller today is Tea and he
- 34:48Speaker 3: says the subject line is black and buy.
- 34:50Speaker 4: I guess, Dear Chelsea.
- 34:52Speaker 3: I'm a twenty eight year old guy living in Southeast Texas,
- 34:55Speaker 3: born and raised to cut to the chase. I'm a
- 34:57Speaker 3: queer identifying black man who's never actually dated or sexually
- 35:00Speaker 3: been involved with men.
- 35:01Speaker 4: I know, weird, but I'm sure I don't date much.
- 35:05Speaker 3: But There's been a couple of girls here and there,
- 35:07Speaker 3: some of which were in high school, which I don't
- 35:08Speaker 3: really count as real relationships.
- 35:10Speaker 4: When people hear me speak or see.
- 35:12Speaker 3: How I socialize with others, especially women, the question of
- 35:15Speaker 3: is he gay always comes up, maybe because I'm not
- 35:17Speaker 3: a fucking creep. I've noticed since I was fourteen that
- 35:20Speaker 3: I wasn't completely hetero, but who is? But labels feel
- 35:23Speaker 3: restrictive not to mention being a black man raised in
- 35:26Speaker 3: the South and how that plays a part in existing
- 35:28Speaker 3: as a man. But I do a pretty good job
- 35:30Speaker 3: of not succumbing to the woes of toxic masculinity. I
- 35:33Speaker 3: don't hide my sexuality, but I'm also not screaming it
- 35:35Speaker 3: from the rooftop. Now I want to actually explore dating guys,
- 35:39Speaker 3: since I've never dipped my foot into that pool. But
- 35:41Speaker 3: like I've mentioned, I don't date much. I'm almost hyper independent.
- 35:45Speaker 3: I enjoy my piece too much to let anyone ruin that.
- 35:47Speaker 3: But I know if I found the right person or people,
- 35:49Speaker 3: I could have something really nice and better than what
- 35:51Speaker 3: I enjoy now. The apps are terribly exhausting, and I
- 35:54Speaker 3: think one reason I've not dated men is because the
- 35:56Speaker 3: ones around here are absolutely unbearably terrible, whether they're Republican,
- 36:01Speaker 3: DL synonymous, or just plain boring. I tend to lose
- 36:04Speaker 3: interest pretty fast, but I don't know if this is
- 36:07Speaker 3: genuine disinterest or some latent self inflicted homophobia. What's your
- 36:11Speaker 3: advice for a bye guy living in Texas that wants
- 36:14Speaker 3: to enter the world of gay dating for the first
- 36:15Speaker 3: time at twenty eight? And what advice do you have
- 36:18Speaker 3: for me when the inevitable you're twenty eight and have
- 36:20Speaker 3: never dated a guy comes up?
- 36:22Speaker 5: T Hi ta hi, Hi.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Ladies, this is Wanda Psychs our special guest today.
- 36:31Speaker 5: How you doing.
- 36:31Speaker 8: It's so nice to meet all of you. I can't
- 36:35Speaker 8: even say how starstruck I am right now.
- 36:41Speaker 5: See what part of Texas are you in.
- 36:44Speaker 7: I'm about an hour outside of Houston.
- 36:47Speaker 8: Okay, it's not like really big, but it's not like
- 36:50Speaker 8: super small either.
- 36:52Speaker 5: Dallas is pretty, you know, popping as far as in
- 36:55Speaker 5: the queer community. But I think you know, good Atlanta
- 37:00Speaker 5: for a weekend. I think I think you'll find out
- 37:05Speaker 5: real quickly which you know what floatshi you're into?
- 37:10Speaker 2: I think, right, I think that's a great idea of
- 37:13Speaker 2: solid idea.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Yes, have you been to Atlanta, tea.
- 37:17Speaker 7: I have not been to it.
- 37:19Speaker 5: Oh boy, no, I've definitely it is gay overload.
- 37:25Speaker 8: Yeah, I've been to Dallas a couple of times. I
- 37:28Speaker 8: actually went with a couple of friends maybe two or
- 37:31Speaker 8: three years ago, and I was actually super surprised about
- 37:34Speaker 8: how how queer the place is. But yeah, you don't
- 37:38Speaker 8: have to tell me how gay Atlanta is. You hear
- 37:40Speaker 8: about it all the time.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Absolutely, But I definitely think it's worth a trip.
- 37:45Speaker 2: I think that's a serious, good piece of advice because
- 37:48Speaker 2: it is good to go, especially like get outside of
- 37:50Speaker 2: your community and check out what you're into and find,
- 37:54Speaker 2: you know, spend a long weekend there.
- 37:55Speaker 1: I'm going to Dallas for a show.
- 37:57Speaker 2: You would come. My niece goes to Emory Universe in Atlanta.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Will take you out. She'll know where the gay bars
- 38:03Speaker 2: are and where to go if you want to do that.
- 38:06Speaker 2: I'm serious, we would take you out and do that
- 38:08Speaker 2: because there's no thing I love more than shepherding somebody
- 38:12Speaker 2: into their gayness. But also, I don't want you to
- 38:15Speaker 2: think of twenty eight years old as like like that's
- 38:18Speaker 2: an embarrassment.
- 38:19Speaker 1: I think you should flip the script.
- 38:20Speaker 2: I think you should flip the script on that, Like,
- 38:22Speaker 2: you should look at that as I've been waiting until
- 38:26Speaker 2: I've whole adult man, and waiting until I'm mature enough
- 38:30Speaker 2: to be in a relationship and a romantic relationship and
- 38:34Speaker 2: to be sure of what it is I'm looking for.
- 38:36Speaker 2: So there's an advantage for you not having to have
- 38:40Speaker 2: been through all the drama and all the noise and
- 38:43Speaker 2: ugliness that relationships can bring when you're kind of too
- 38:45Speaker 2: young and immature to really.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Know what you're doing.
- 38:50Speaker 2: So first I would start with that, you know what
- 38:53Speaker 2: I mean, like, flip the script on that.
- 38:55Speaker 7: Yeah, I and I completely agree.
- 38:58Speaker 8: It's more it is more along the lines of, you know,
- 39:01Speaker 8: I needed to, like I guess, find myself you know
- 39:06Speaker 8: before uh, you know, just throwing myself into something just
- 39:09Speaker 8: because you know, some people don't like to be alone
- 39:11Speaker 8: or you know, some people have to be in a
- 39:12Speaker 8: relationship or anything like that.
- 39:15Speaker 7: But yeah, like I just I really like.
- 39:17Speaker 8: The you know, the peace and the the lack of
- 39:21Speaker 8: drama that comes with being single. But you know, not
- 39:24Speaker 8: that it gets old, but you know, there are some
- 39:27Speaker 8: things that you know you'd like to share with people,
- 39:29Speaker 8: and you know, being in a relationship kind of gives
- 39:33Speaker 8: you that like built in person I guess to do
- 39:35Speaker 8: those things with. But yeah, no, I completely agree with
- 39:39Speaker 8: you guys with with that. And I have been doing
- 39:42Speaker 8: like a bit more traveling this like past like a
- 39:47Speaker 8: year or so. I was talking to Catherine a couple
- 39:50Speaker 8: of days ago. I'll be actually going on a cruise.
- 39:53Speaker 7: I think we leave Saturday.
- 39:56Speaker 1: There you go.
- 39:59Speaker 7: Right, yeah exactly.
- 40:00Speaker 8: So yeah, I mean, yeah, I'm excited and I think
- 40:03Speaker 8: doing some traveling, especially to cities as you know queer's
- 40:08Speaker 8: Atlanta and Dallas are is definitely like pretty pretty solid
- 40:12Speaker 8: and good advice.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Do you have like very many queer friendships where you
- 40:16Speaker 4: live now?
- 40:18Speaker 7: Yeah, like I have a couple of queer friends.
- 40:21Speaker 8: I'm honestly most of my friends are probably like by
- 40:24Speaker 8: but yeah, like it's pretty good, and we're all kind
- 40:29Speaker 8: of in the same boat of like we're pretty much
- 40:31Speaker 8: like around my same age. But like the dating scene
- 40:34Speaker 8: around here is just you know, it's not Dallas or
- 40:37Speaker 8: or something like that, so it's more of just like,
- 40:40Speaker 8: you know, if you can find that that diamond in
- 40:43Speaker 8: the rough, I guess, like you know, you're a really
- 40:45Speaker 8: lucky one. But not to say that there's like none
- 40:48Speaker 8: around here. It's just like, you know, you have to
- 40:49Speaker 8: find someone or someone's you know that kind of fits
- 40:54Speaker 8: what you're looking for.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Well, you're super adorable, Yeah.
- 40:58Speaker 5: Yes, thank you. Have any problems look at that smile?
- 41:02Speaker 7: Yeah, thank you so much.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think just even getting to a place
- 41:06Speaker 2: in your life where you're just saying it out loud
- 41:09Speaker 2: and you know, calling into a podcast about it and
- 41:12Speaker 2: expressing like the desires and what you actually want in life,
- 41:15Speaker 2: those are really important things to actually say out loud
- 41:19Speaker 2: and go after and be proactive about.
- 41:21Speaker 1: So like, you know, take these trips, keep talking.
- 41:24Speaker 2: About it, and then you know, go on, have you
- 41:26Speaker 2: been on these apps and stuff? Because I think one
- 41:29Speaker 2: of the good things about these apps is that you
- 41:31Speaker 2: can be so specific about what you are looking for
- 41:34Speaker 2: where you can kind of cut the trash out, you know,
- 41:37Speaker 2: like if you tell somebody like this is exactly what
- 41:40Speaker 2: you know, this is what I want. I don't want
- 41:41Speaker 2: anyone with kids, or I want somebody who's also by.
- 41:44Speaker 2: I want somebody who's never been with you know, whatever
- 41:47Speaker 2: your specifications are, you can say that on an app.
- 41:50Speaker 2: And that's a nice thing that while apps have their
- 41:54Speaker 2: own set of problems, that's one of the advantages that
- 41:57Speaker 2: you can kind of cut out all the noise with
- 41:59Speaker 2: your spell sifications.
- 42:02Speaker 7: Yeah, I've definitely been on the apps.
- 42:05Speaker 8: I probably I delete them on and off every now
- 42:09Speaker 8: and then. I don't currently have them my phone now,
- 42:12Speaker 8: but I have been, you know, kind of getting that
- 42:15Speaker 8: itch of.
- 42:15Speaker 7: Like maybe should I download it again to see what's
- 42:17Speaker 7: going on? So yeah, maybe I'll hop back in.
- 42:20Speaker 8: It's and it's not really I guess, you know, not
- 42:24Speaker 8: to like give myself a big hit or anything, but
- 42:26Speaker 8: it's not really hard to like find people to match with.
- 42:29Speaker 8: It's just you know, the I guess keeping it going
- 42:32Speaker 8: is kind of hard, like I'm not like a ghoster,
- 42:36Speaker 8: but you know, maybe a little like phantom move about
- 42:40Speaker 8: if things aren't really like you know, picking up or
- 42:44Speaker 8: like you can't really see them, you know, going anywhere.
- 42:46Speaker 7: But yeah, no, I'll probably have to give the apps
- 42:48Speaker 7: another try again.
- 42:49Speaker 3: I like Chelsea's original idea, which is get out to
- 42:52Speaker 3: a gay bar. Like gay bars are closing across the country, like.
- 42:57Speaker 7: Within like a hundred mile radius of me.
- 42:59Speaker 8: I'm pretty sure you share in Houston, but like maybe
- 43:02Speaker 8: in Houston is like the only place I can think of.
- 43:05Speaker 1: There's going to be a gay bar in Houston.
- 43:06Speaker 2: There has I mean, I wouldn't be performing in a
- 43:11Speaker 2: city that didn't have gay bars, so that's just like
- 43:13Speaker 2: not even.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Yeah, so you got to go to I mean that's important.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Also, it's also important to meet people like you know,
- 43:19Speaker 2: whether it's romantic or not. You want to meet people
- 43:21Speaker 2: in your community and build a community, absolutely yeah, So
- 43:25Speaker 2: be proactive about it that way.
- 43:26Speaker 1: And also are you on Instagram?
- 43:29Speaker 2: Absolutely yeah, yeah, so that you can geo target people
- 43:32Speaker 2: and like look for people in your area, you know,
- 43:35Speaker 2: and then you can hit people up on dms.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a nice way to meet people, especially.
- 43:40Speaker 2: If you're not like you know, for anonymous people who
- 43:42Speaker 2: are like living you get slide into someone's DMS and
- 43:44Speaker 2: be like, oh, I love your profile, do you you
- 43:46Speaker 2: know if do you ever want to do something like
- 43:48Speaker 2: you see you know, you look at the vibe of
- 43:50Speaker 2: what they are. But you know, there's all different ways
- 43:52Speaker 2: to do it, but I love being basically in person
- 43:55Speaker 2: is a lost art and people need to you know,
- 43:57Speaker 2: double down on that a because big gay bar are
- 44:00Speaker 2: closing down all the time, and we need to keep
- 44:02Speaker 2: them open and we need to give them business, so
- 44:04Speaker 2: keep that in mind also when you're doing this, and yeah,
- 44:07Speaker 2: just to build your community.
- 44:08Speaker 1: You just want to build.
- 44:09Speaker 2: I love that you have friends that are in the
- 44:11Speaker 2: same kind of situation as you, and that you guys
- 44:13Speaker 2: are like figuring it out together. That's great that you
- 44:16Speaker 2: have like a support system, so to speak. So just
- 44:20Speaker 2: keep doing that, but be very proactive about putting yourself
- 44:23Speaker 2: out there.
- 44:24Speaker 7: Yeah, thank you so much.
- 44:26Speaker 8: I got to get my biposter, even got to rate
- 44:28Speaker 8: a couple of gay bars.
- 44:29Speaker 2: I guess, yes, the next step and seriously look at
- 44:34Speaker 2: my tour schedule on my Instagram when I'm Atlanta. In Atlanta,
- 44:38Speaker 2: if you want to come that weekend, they are always
- 44:41Speaker 2: gay men at my shows. There are and hit Catherine
- 44:45Speaker 2: up and we'll coordinate tickets for you and everything.
- 44:48Speaker 7: I will definitely do that. Okay, thank you so much.
- 44:51Speaker 1: Y Spiculadies with Pleasure guy. Yeah, thanks t go get
- 44:55Speaker 1: it to you. You're so cute.
- 44:58Speaker 7: Thank you so much. Guys. Yeah, I'm a good one.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Okay, bye bye bye.
- 45:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:06Speaker 4: I love him. He's just so sweet.
- 45:08Speaker 1: It's cute, so cute.
- 45:09Speaker 3: He's gonna do great, He's gonna do just fine. What
- 45:17Speaker 3: our next caller is Meg, and she says, happily laid off.
- 45:21Speaker 4: But now what, dear Chelsea, I'm Meg.
- 45:24Speaker 3: I'm fifty one, a pice. He's born in nineteen seventy five,
- 45:26Speaker 3: just like you. I live outside Philadelphia, and I was
- 45:31Speaker 3: just laid off from an amazing company that I truly
- 45:33Speaker 3: felt like I would spend the rest of my career with.
- 45:35Speaker 3: It was an amazing place to work until it wasn't
- 45:38Speaker 3: new leadership and it all went south.
- 45:39Speaker 4: Here's the thing.
- 45:40Speaker 3: I'm not devastated. I'm relieved I can finally breathe again.
- 45:44Speaker 3: And that's the part that's keeping me up at night.
- 45:46Speaker 3: I've had a good career, and what has genuinely brought
- 45:48Speaker 3: me joy. The part I do for free is leading people,
- 45:51Speaker 3: mentoring women early in their careers, watching someone who didn't
- 45:55Speaker 3: believe in herself figure out that she's actually brilliant, teaching
- 45:58Speaker 3: women to be bold and wrong and have their voices heard.
- 46:01Speaker 3: That has always been the best part of the job,
- 46:03Speaker 3: and I've quietly wondered if there's a version of my
- 46:05Speaker 3: life where that's not just a sidebar. I have a
- 46:08Speaker 3: teenage daughter watching every move. I make a list of
- 46:11Speaker 3: life projects. I keep deferring and a bit of runway
- 46:13Speaker 3: thanks to savings and a supportive spouse.
- 46:16Speaker 4: I want to show my daughter.
- 46:17Speaker 3: That you don't have to stay on a path just
- 46:18Speaker 3: because you've already walked most of it, that reinvention isn't
- 46:21Speaker 3: just for your twenties, that it's actually braver to start
- 46:24Speaker 3: over at fifty one than it ever was at twenty five.
- 46:27Speaker 3: I don't want to just find another job. I want
- 46:29Speaker 3: to find the right next chapter. So Chelsea, you're fifty one,
- 46:32Speaker 3: You've done this and you don't sugarcoat anything, which is
- 46:34Speaker 3: why I need your help.
- 46:36Speaker 5: Meg.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Hi, Meg, Hi, Hi. This is Wanda Sykes, our special guests.
- 46:42Speaker 5: Hi, Wanda, I'm met.
- 46:45Speaker 1: I loved your letter.
- 46:46Speaker 2: I think that is really empowering, and you could tell
- 46:49Speaker 2: that you're a woman who empowers other women by everything
- 46:52Speaker 2: you wrote and wanting to demonstrate that for your daughter.
- 46:55Speaker 2: So I don't know what's the problem, Like, yes, you should,
- 46:58Speaker 2: you should reinvent yours and do something.
- 47:01Speaker 1: Do you know what you want to do? Is that
- 47:02Speaker 1: what you're asking?
- 47:05Speaker 2: You?
- 47:05Speaker 8: Know?
- 47:05Speaker 6: I've thought a lot about it. I wrote the letter
- 47:08Speaker 6: like six weeks ago, so I've had more time to
- 47:11Speaker 6: think about it, and.
- 47:12Speaker 9: I mean the more time that's gone by.
- 47:14Speaker 6: The more, I'm like, I definitely don't feel like going
- 47:17Speaker 6: back to what I was doing.
- 47:18Speaker 9: It was it was great.
- 47:20Speaker 6: It was a career, but it's not like passion in
- 47:24Speaker 6: terms of like the industry and stuff like that.
- 47:26Speaker 9: But what I really love.
- 47:28Speaker 6: Is just being a role model and like being a
- 47:31Speaker 6: person that like I had a lot of earlier career
- 47:34Speaker 6: women that were on my team.
- 47:36Speaker 9: And they just they always just like.
- 47:39Speaker 6: Came to me for every every kind of problem, every
- 47:42Speaker 6: kind of challenge, and I always, you know, just.
- 47:44Speaker 9: Really felt like I could, I could figure out the
- 47:47Speaker 9: right words to help them and to lead them.
- 47:50Speaker 6: So I just I think about that, and that's like
- 47:53Speaker 6: I haven't been doing that too much, and that's what
- 47:55Speaker 6: I missed the most, my girls.
- 47:57Speaker 9: And yeah, I.
- 47:59Speaker 6: Just I I kind of am trying to figure out,
- 48:01Speaker 6: like what can I do that's maybe leadership focused. But
- 48:05Speaker 6: then I also like have a lot of different passions
- 48:08Speaker 6: in life. I love to travel, I love to ski,
- 48:10Speaker 6: I love to you know, be with my family. So
- 48:13Speaker 6: I'm like, how can I like do all that and
- 48:15Speaker 6: make money?
- 48:16Speaker 5: I don't know, easily.
- 48:17Speaker 2: So easily, first of all, you have the whole world
- 48:20Speaker 2: at your fingertips, like you have such a luxury that
- 48:22Speaker 2: you're talking about right now, you financially able to do that.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Most people are not.
- 48:27Speaker 2: You have a daughter that like this is a very
- 48:29Speaker 2: exciting time, so like that you should be really excited.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Definitely if you can get rid of that job that
- 48:35Speaker 2: you're not passionate about, get rid of it. The most
- 48:37Speaker 2: exciting thing I felt when I turned fifty was like
- 48:40Speaker 2: I was so scared of turning fifty, thinking it was like,
- 48:43Speaker 2: not so scared, but I kind of was like I
- 48:46Speaker 2: wasn't excited. And then I turned fifty, and it was
- 48:48Speaker 2: like this brand new excitement, Like.
- 48:51Speaker 1: It was like a whole reset.
- 48:53Speaker 2: I don't know if you felt that way Wanda at
- 48:55Speaker 2: fifty or sixty, but I feel like every decade gives
- 48:58Speaker 2: us like we're still here, We've got all of our
- 49:02Speaker 2: shit together, Like we're the reason we got ourselves to
- 49:05Speaker 2: the position we're in, so we've got receipts to show
- 49:08Speaker 2: how competent and capable we are.
- 49:11Speaker 1: And then like you have a.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Whole new like chapter, it's very exciting, and you kind
- 49:17Speaker 2: of you're smarter than you've ever been. You have more
- 49:19Speaker 2: wisdom than you've ever had, and you have more life
- 49:21Speaker 2: experience than you ever had. The world is your oyster.
- 49:24Speaker 2: You can figure out a way to mentor young girls
- 49:27Speaker 2: or business women or however you want to do it easily.
- 49:30Speaker 2: That's not going to be hard for you to figure out.
- 49:32Speaker 2: You've done it before, and there's everybody. I mean, that's
- 49:35Speaker 2: pretty much the most worthwhile thing I can think of
- 49:37Speaker 2: doing would be helping other people succeed, you know, so
- 49:42Speaker 2: I think you should totally like get running in that direction.
- 49:45Speaker 2: You seem completely competent in knowing what you're good at,
- 49:49Speaker 2: and that's kind of like, you know, the thing that
- 49:52Speaker 2: people call in hear the most about is not knowing
- 49:55Speaker 2: which direction to go in and not knowing what they
- 49:57Speaker 2: even feel passionate about.
- 49:59Speaker 1: And you have all of the answers.
- 50:01Speaker 2: So it's just about taking steps in that direction, don't
- 50:05Speaker 2: you think, Wanda?
- 50:06Speaker 5: Absolutely absolutely. You know, I had a real job before
- 50:10Speaker 5: I got into comedy. I worked at NSA, but I
- 50:14Speaker 5: just knew it was something else that I was supposed
- 50:16Speaker 5: to be doing. But I you know, left the job
- 50:20Speaker 5: to pursue comedy because that's what I'm passionate about. I
- 50:24Speaker 5: think you you know, you know what you the parts
- 50:28Speaker 5: of your job which gave you gave you joy. You
- 50:30Speaker 5: said that was helping other women. There's so many nonprofits
- 50:34Speaker 5: out here with who could absolutely you know, use someone
- 50:39Speaker 5: like you need someone like you. There's like women I
- 50:43Speaker 5: actually I met this woman last night. She runs a
- 50:46Speaker 5: program for women who are just coming out of jail,
- 50:49Speaker 5: out of out of prison. Yeah, I mean if that's
- 50:52Speaker 5: not you know, that makes you uncomfortable whatever, But still
- 50:55Speaker 5: there's there's so many programs of like nonprofits who need that.
- 51:00Speaker 5: Who can you know, give young women a path just
- 51:04Speaker 5: to just to point them in the right direction as
- 51:06Speaker 5: far as you know, how they can get their you know,
- 51:09Speaker 5: life together, help them with the resumes or whatever to
- 51:13Speaker 5: get them you know, back up and into society. So yeah,
- 51:17Speaker 5: or you know, it's like you said, just career advice.
- 51:21Speaker 5: I'm sure, especially when you come out of college, you
- 51:24Speaker 5: don't know what you really want to do unless you're
- 51:27Speaker 5: you know, going for that hard science you know, doctor
- 51:30Speaker 5: or lawyer whatever. But it's yeah, I mean it's for
- 51:34Speaker 5: someone just to sit down and talk with young women
- 51:37Speaker 5: about what they want to do and and also to
- 51:40Speaker 5: help them find what they're passionate about. You know, it
- 51:44Speaker 5: can save a lot of people a lot of headaches
- 51:49Speaker 5: get going down a path and getting stuck in the job.
- 51:51Speaker 5: But they're like, oh God, where this is. This can't
- 51:54Speaker 5: be the rest of my life, you know.
- 51:55Speaker 9: Yeah, Yeah, I loved my career.
- 51:57Speaker 6: I loved what I did, and you know, I learned
- 51:59Speaker 6: so much had I not had all that life experience.
- 52:01Speaker 6: And I kind of was like definitely always a person
- 52:04Speaker 6: that just like jumped in, rolled at my sleeves, got
- 52:06Speaker 6: the job done, whatever needed to be done. And I've
- 52:08Speaker 6: always kind of taken that attitude. But you know, now
- 52:11Speaker 6: I'm like, how can I how can I really put
- 52:15Speaker 6: like pen to paper and say, like where where do
- 52:18Speaker 6: I start?
- 52:19Speaker 9: Like I guess that's where I'm kind of struggling.
- 52:21Speaker 6: Like I know in my in my heart like what
- 52:24Speaker 6: brings me joy and what makes me happy?
- 52:26Speaker 9: But I'm kind of like, all right, how do I
- 52:29Speaker 9: how do I find that? And I guess that's that's
- 52:31Speaker 9: kind of where I where I am right now.
- 52:33Speaker 3: I feel like you, your vibe is high, and I
- 52:36Speaker 3: think if you can continue to maintain that high vibe
- 52:39Speaker 3: and keep like looking and searching, the right thing is
- 52:42Speaker 3: going to come to you, whether that's looking online at
- 52:44Speaker 3: different jobs, networking with women's groups, women entrepreneur groups or
- 52:48Speaker 3: women's business groups.
- 52:49Speaker 1: And mentoring opportunities.
- 52:51Speaker 2: Yeah, just go online and look up mentoring opportunities because
- 52:54Speaker 2: I'm sure you're going to run into a bunch of
- 52:55Speaker 2: things you didn't even know existed. There's so many career
- 52:58Speaker 2: coaching I mean, all my friends that are CEOs have
- 53:01Speaker 2: like career coaches, and that might not sound appealing to you,
- 53:05Speaker 2: but like there's a coach for everything, And if you're
- 53:07Speaker 2: a motivational type of person, there's people that are gonna
- 53:10Speaker 2: need help with, you know, whatever you're willing to do
- 53:13Speaker 2: in terms of like whether it is for a nonprofit
- 53:16Speaker 2: or if it's or if it is something where you
- 53:18Speaker 2: need to get paid, Like you just have to start
- 53:20Speaker 2: putting your foot forward in that direction.
- 53:23Speaker 1: And when you get off this call, like really sit.
- 53:25Speaker 2: Down and write down what it would look like for
- 53:28Speaker 2: you in to mentor like what are you looking to do?
- 53:31Speaker 2: Do you want to mentor people personally professionally like a
- 53:34Speaker 2: life coach? Like what it is you are, like write
- 53:37Speaker 2: it all down so that you can really kind of
- 53:39Speaker 2: like have time to think about what is the most
- 53:42Speaker 2: appealing part about that job for you and what you
- 53:45Speaker 2: excel at and I think that you'll get a clearer
- 53:48Speaker 2: idea the more you keep kind of being introspective and
- 53:51Speaker 2: like really sitting with all of that.
- 53:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree.
- 53:54Speaker 3: There's something magical when you write stuff down, almost as
- 53:59Speaker 3: if it's already happened, Like this is what my dream
- 54:03Speaker 3: job looks like, these are the elements that it has,
- 54:05Speaker 3: this is where it's located, and get really specific about
- 54:08Speaker 3: what you want that it just like helps that crystallize
- 54:12Speaker 3: and materialize.
- 54:12Speaker 4: I know it seems woo woo, but it really does work.
- 54:15Speaker 6: No, And you always talk about journaling and right, and
- 54:17Speaker 6: I'm you know, I always feel like I open a
- 54:20Speaker 6: book and I'm like, Okay, I have it.
- 54:21Speaker 9: All in my head, but where do I start?
- 54:23Speaker 6: So I just need to, like like I said, they
- 54:25Speaker 6: put pen to paper and just try to get some
- 54:26Speaker 6: words out. And you know, I've done a lot of
- 54:29Speaker 6: writing in my in my career, so I should be
- 54:31Speaker 6: able to do that.
- 54:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but you're gonna be great. Everything's gonna be great
- 54:36Speaker 2: for you. I can already tell good.
- 54:38Speaker 5: Yeah. Even that you like to ski, put together some
- 54:42Speaker 5: ski victor. Yeah.
- 54:44Speaker 1: Whatever.
- 54:44Speaker 5: You bring a bunch of women together and you know,
- 54:47Speaker 5: you all go skiing. And talk about shit.
- 54:51Speaker 9: I have my friends that I do that with already.
- 54:53Speaker 4: But you know, there's a business idea in there though,
- 54:57Speaker 4: I think one of the Yeah, no, I like it.
- 54:59Speaker 5: I like it.
- 55:00Speaker 1: Building a team building ski trip.
- 55:02Speaker 5: There you go, yeah, there you go.
- 55:04Speaker 3: Yeahs, I mean that's great.
- 55:07Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah.
- 55:08Speaker 6: I've done events. I've done just probably about everything in marketing.
- 55:11Speaker 6: So there's just like there's so many things, so many directions.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Yeah, just get it, gets quiet, and get with yourself
- 55:16Speaker 2: and just like write down all the things that are
- 55:18Speaker 2: appealing to you and you're and everything will start to
- 55:20Speaker 2: come into focus. You know, if you just allow the
- 55:23Speaker 2: time and allow yourself the freedom to walk away from
- 55:26Speaker 2: your job and know you're doing that and take a
- 55:28Speaker 2: leap of faith in your own competency and see what
- 55:32Speaker 2: what that shapes out to be.
- 55:34Speaker 9: Yeah, that's great, that's great. I appreciate it so much.
- 55:36Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's the reason why that job ended, because
- 55:39Speaker 5: you're supposed to be doing something else. So you're right, life,
- 55:42Speaker 5: life had to usher you out of it.
- 55:44Speaker 6: You know, those are never like great experiences to go through,
- 55:48Speaker 6: but sometimes it's that you need it.
- 55:51Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely not, but yeah, need to need to push.
- 55:54Speaker 9: Yeah, and it's summer, so I get to enjoy that
- 55:56Speaker 9: with kids.
- 55:58Speaker 4: I'll take it, all right, me, will you follow up
- 56:01Speaker 4: with us?
- 56:01Speaker 9: I will, I will. I will keep you posted. Thank
- 56:04Speaker 9: you so much for having me. It was so nice
- 56:06Speaker 9: to meet you all.
- 56:06Speaker 1: Thanks Beg, thanks for calling in.
- 56:09Speaker 9: All right, thank you, bye.
- 56:11Speaker 1: Bye bye, Okay, Wanda.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Before we go, I just want to ask you, what
- 56:15Speaker 2: is the worst piece of advice that anyone's given you.
- 56:18Speaker 5: They are to wear more like dresses. When I said
- 56:26Speaker 5: what they said more, I was like, what are you
- 56:29Speaker 5: talking about? What are you talking about? Can you see that?
- 56:36Speaker 5: Can you see me come out in some nice long,
- 56:38Speaker 5: like floral flowy?
- 56:41Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 56:41Speaker 5: I know.
- 56:41Speaker 2: People have told me that so many times too. It's
- 56:43Speaker 2: like they have one. They have the same advice for
- 56:45Speaker 2: all women, were more dresses. I had the guy at
- 56:49Speaker 2: the laugh factory tell me to put a bird on
- 56:51Speaker 2: my shoulder. He said, I should put a bird on
- 56:53Speaker 2: my shoulder, Jamie Masada. But uh, you know that was
- 56:57Speaker 2: another thing in your special when you were when you
- 56:59Speaker 2: were dancing around and showing you when you were demonstrating
- 57:04Speaker 2: you were like losing. I was like, when she stops
- 57:06Speaker 2: moving like that, Like what was that? What was that
- 57:08Speaker 2: shuffle you were doing.
- 57:10Speaker 1: You were acting out edition. Oh yeah, yeah, the new edition. Yeah,
- 57:15Speaker 1: when you were done. When you were doing that, I
- 57:17Speaker 1: was like, that's.
- 57:18Speaker 2: Too much exercise while you're on such I'm like, when
- 57:21Speaker 2: she stops that, let's see how she's breathing.
- 57:25Speaker 1: That was really worth it though. That was good stuff.
- 57:29Speaker 2: Well, Wanda, thank you so much for being with us today.
- 57:31Speaker 2: Everyone are special.
- 57:32Speaker 5: And that was fun.
- 57:33Speaker 2: It's out now on Netflix. It's streaming and it's called Legacy.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Make sure you watch it.
- 57:38Speaker 5: Thank you, thank you so much.
- 57:40Speaker 1: Say hello to Alex for me, will you please?
- 57:42Speaker 5: I will?
- 57:43Speaker 1: Okay? Thanks, take care bye.
