- 1:04Speaker 3: So Freddy, I would also say listening to our hearts,
- 1:11Speaker 3: Let's just.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Listen to our hearts. Listen to our hearts, not just
- 1:14Speaker 1: their voices.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Freddy, I need a word of advice, yes, sir, which
- 1:19Speaker 3: I think is going to.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Lead us into the theme of the episode. But how
- 1:25Speaker 2: do you do it? Man?
- 1:26Speaker 1: What's that?
- 1:29Speaker 3: How did you get home from your meetings and your
- 1:33Speaker 3: work and all that stuff. You're like, oh, I'm going
- 1:36Speaker 3: to have a five thirty six o'clock dinner, and you're like, oh,
- 1:39Speaker 3: I had an early enough dinner. I think it's only seven.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Maybe I should watch a movie. Yeah, And then you
- 1:46Speaker 3: sit on.
- 1:46Speaker 2: The couch with your lady and you're like, all right.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Let's pick something. And it's now ten fifteen PM and
- 1:55Speaker 3: you've now watched twenty seven trailers. Don't pick anything and
- 2:01Speaker 3: pass out on the couch. You at one am, you
- 2:03Speaker 3: gotta slash, you know. You get like a glass of
- 2:05Speaker 3: water from the kitchen and decide to roll onto your
- 2:08Speaker 3: bed because your neck hurts.
- 2:10Speaker 1: You described by you know.
- 2:11Speaker 4: I have to say, right, there's so much to see
- 2:13Speaker 4: but nothing to watch. Right, there's such a gigantic selection.
- 2:19Speaker 4: I'm the type of person that I'll put something on
- 2:22Speaker 4: and if it doesn't interest me, like in the first
- 2:24Speaker 4: I'll know the first not even five minutes if it's
- 2:28Speaker 4: gonna be good.
- 2:29Speaker 2: But how do you pick it? Do you just give
- 2:31Speaker 2: it a shot?
- 2:32Speaker 4: I'll just go, Oh, that looks interesting, the title looks interesting,
- 2:35Speaker 4: the description looks interesting. I like this director, I like
- 2:38Speaker 4: this actor. There's something that sort of hooks me. And
- 2:42Speaker 4: I've said this before. I have pretty good instincts, you know.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Sometimes I can just tell by looking at it, like
- 2:48Speaker 4: and sometimes I'm wrong, and I'll put it on in
- 2:51Speaker 4: the first thirty seconds. A row and I'll be like,
- 2:53Speaker 4: I don't, I don't. I don't like the tone of
- 2:56Speaker 4: this thing. There's something about the way the way it feels. Okay,
- 3:00Speaker 4: I'll get in like a minute, two minutes, three minutes,
- 3:03Speaker 4: five minutes, and I'll turn it off.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Uh.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And same thing with trailers. You know.
- 3:08Speaker 4: I love to watch there's that app on Apple TV
- 3:11Speaker 4: where you can just watch trailers.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I watch trailers all day long.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Man, yeah, you know, and I really get a sense
- 3:16Speaker 4: of like what I think is good. I just saw
- 3:18Speaker 4: this movie called Sarat I think it was on Hulu,
- 3:23Speaker 4: a movie that was not popular, right, but but but
- 3:26Speaker 4: it but it won at the Can Film Festival, and
- 3:29Speaker 4: I was like, Okay, that's that. That's a big deal, right, Like,
- 3:33Speaker 4: like I want to see what One at Can and
- 3:35Speaker 4: the movie blew me away, man, I mean it. It
- 3:39Speaker 4: was captivating the way that they captured tone and everything
- 3:44Speaker 4: in that film. And that's not a popular movie and
- 3:46Speaker 4: that's not something that someone would normally watch.
- 3:48Speaker 1: But but but just the fact that it won at
- 3:51Speaker 1: Can made me want to want to watch it.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Okay, I'll be completely honest.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I'm not sure that Dad would have advice actually helped me,
- 3:59Speaker 3: But what would.
- 4:00Speaker 1: You okay, what's talk me through your process?
- 4:03Speaker 3: Especially you who did who that's next to hers from
- 4:07Speaker 3: passing out on the couch and yeah, so you're there.
- 4:09Speaker 1: You watch a bunch of trailers.
- 4:11Speaker 3: So there were like so every app has an interface,
- 4:15Speaker 3: right and when as soon as you log in, there
- 4:17Speaker 3: is I don't know, maybe fifty titles in the front page, right, Yeah,
- 4:24Speaker 3: and some platforms don't have enough titles features, so you
- 4:28Speaker 3: have the same title feature four times on that like
- 4:33Speaker 3: new this week, Yeah, picked for you or like you know,
- 4:40Speaker 3: top ten, you know, and it's like the same movie
- 4:43Speaker 3: from the last three roads, you know. So it's kind
- 4:46Speaker 3: of hard to pick. So it just it's just for me.
- 4:50Speaker 3: It's now coming down to having to make an intentional decision.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Tonight I want to watch action or tonight I'm going
- 5:00Speaker 3: to look for a comedy.
- 5:02Speaker 4: But do you do you go back to like something
- 5:04Speaker 4: that you know or is it just something that's new?
- 5:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look, if I if I can't find anything,
- 5:10Speaker 3: I'll go with like a Jim Carrey like find I
- 5:14Speaker 3: find like the first Dasment tourists.
- 5:17Speaker 4: I find like liar Liar, he's he's He's from another planet.
- 5:20Speaker 3: That dude, I mean, and it's just he's such a
- 5:23Speaker 3: great performer, so you're just you're just like enamored.
- 5:26Speaker 2: By all his choices and just like love it.
- 5:29Speaker 3: But again, so I now have to I can't just
- 5:32Speaker 3: be like I'm going to browse, because then I'll end
- 5:34Speaker 3: up picking nothing.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And I think, I don't know how you guys do
- 5:36Speaker 2: it at home.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Tell us how you guys do it at home, because
- 5:39Speaker 3: because for me it's it's been really difficult. So now
- 5:41Speaker 3: I have to kind of really make an intentional, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 3: outlook and say like an intentional you know, intention like whatever,
- 5:50Speaker 3: what's the word that.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I'm looking for.
- 5:54Speaker 3: I have to have made the decision that I'm watching
- 5:57Speaker 3: a comedy, or I'm made the decision that I'm watching espionage,
- 6:01Speaker 3: or I'm watching a documentary, I'm watching whatever, So then
- 6:03Speaker 3: like you can narrow it down to a category and
- 6:06Speaker 3: then hopefully something speaks to you, because if you just
- 6:08Speaker 3: sit in front of it and you're like, let me
- 6:10Speaker 3: see what's new?
- 6:11Speaker 4: Right, right, Okay, so you've picked the category, right, you
- 6:15Speaker 4: said tonight I'm gonna watch comedy. You know, I just said, Hey,
- 6:18Speaker 4: I I was browsing through and this thing said it
- 6:21Speaker 4: played it can, so that's why I wanted to see it.
- 6:23Speaker 4: So like, what's the indicator for you? Like, what what
- 6:25Speaker 4: is it that you see that you go, oh yeah,
- 6:28Speaker 4: maybe maybe that.
- 6:29Speaker 3: For me, comedy is really about the storyteller. So it's
- 6:34Speaker 3: like the director, but it also is like who are
- 6:38Speaker 3: we watching? Because most comedy works because an actor is
- 6:43Speaker 3: bringing it to life and levels that. Yeah, you know,
- 6:46Speaker 3: comedy is one of those things where like you kind
- 6:48Speaker 3: of want to trust the filmmaker, but really you are
- 6:51Speaker 3: watching the person, you know. So it's if it's like
- 6:54Speaker 3: a Will Ferrell movie, if it's like a Paul Rod movie,
- 6:56Speaker 3: if it's like a Jack Black movie, if it's like
- 6:59Speaker 3: you know, you know, Eddie Murphy or whatever, You're like, okay,
- 7:03Speaker 3: now you have to just pick what tone of a
- 7:07Speaker 3: comedic actor you're gonna watch.
- 7:09Speaker 1: So it's my actors.
- 7:10Speaker 2: So so let's just say you've comedy. For me, it's
- 7:12Speaker 2: like the actors.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Okay, so you've chosen comedy. You go in the comedy section.
- 7:17Speaker 4: There's the classics that you know, right, Jim Carre, But
- 7:20Speaker 4: here's this whole slew of new stuff. How do you
- 7:24Speaker 4: how do you choose what out of the new stuff
- 7:27Speaker 4: that you so you would have to know who the
- 7:29Speaker 4: actor is.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Crazy.
- 7:30Speaker 3: It is crazy stufficult for me because I really believe
- 7:33Speaker 3: that most comedy today is so soft hitting. They're very timid.
- 7:40Speaker 3: It's very it's look warm, it's watered down. It doesn't
- 7:47Speaker 3: have an opinion. And comedy is at its best when
- 7:49Speaker 3: it has an opinion about about what it is, about
- 7:53Speaker 3: what that project is, about, what that story is supposed
- 7:55Speaker 3: to feel like, and be like that's why when you
- 7:58Speaker 3: look at Jaed Apato, all his opinion, it's about coming
- 8:00Speaker 3: to story.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Coming of age, you know, hit.
- 8:04Speaker 3: You know, that's what when you see he says rogan
- 8:06Speaker 3: producing something, he's telling you this is how he feels
- 8:09Speaker 3: about this subject matter.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah, the studio, you're talking about.
- 8:12Speaker 3: The studio or even like when you go back to
- 8:13Speaker 3: like Knocked Up, you know you talk about forty year
- 8:17Speaker 3: old Virgin, Like these are.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Themes that knew them knew itself.
- 8:21Speaker 3: It wasn't that like, you know, be funny a forty
- 8:23Speaker 3: year old virgin movie and let's just do a bunch
- 8:25Speaker 3: of impress about what it would be like to be
- 8:27Speaker 3: a virgin as you're forties. No, it's like they have
- 8:30Speaker 3: an actual point of view about why this character, where
- 8:34Speaker 3: this character is, and where he ends up at the
- 8:36Speaker 3: end of the movie, and what is his happy end
- 8:38Speaker 3: and if if you're going to make fun of him
- 8:39Speaker 3: in the whole movie, how does it win at the end?
- 8:42Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 8:42Speaker 3: You know so so a lot of these movies are
- 8:44Speaker 3: just like they don't they don't answer that question for
- 8:47Speaker 3: the end, just kind.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Of real general now and real water down.
- 8:52Speaker 3: It's just like it's a one size fits all and
- 8:54Speaker 3: comedy is at its best when it's specific, when when
- 8:57Speaker 3: it has an opinion about the subject matter, and we
- 9:00Speaker 3: don't have that now, and you occasionally have one that
- 9:03Speaker 3: pops off and you're like, Okay, this is gonna be cool, Like,
- 9:05Speaker 3: for example, when Jack Black and Paul Rod Didakonda remake Things?
- 9:10Speaker 3: Oh so yeah, yeah, how incentive is that?
- 9:14Speaker 2: I just saw fun?
- 9:16Speaker 1: Yes?
- 9:17Speaker 2: Yes, so good?
- 9:18Speaker 3: Right, Like these guys and you're like, Jack Black and
- 9:21Speaker 3: Paul Rod is gonna be magic?
- 9:22Speaker 2: Why?
- 9:23Speaker 3: Because they know two things? Why is their ass on screen?
- 9:28Speaker 3: And they're the ones they need to answer to their
- 9:31Speaker 3: own performance? Yeah yeah, two, you know totally, they get
- 9:36Speaker 3: aligned on how far they're gonna go with this thing. Yeah,
- 9:41Speaker 3: you know, so, but these are real comedic pros. You know,
- 9:44Speaker 3: Paul Rod to me walks on water. Jack Black is
- 9:47Speaker 3: iss a surgical performer as well.
- 9:50Speaker 2: You know, so I think it's great.
- 9:51Speaker 3: So you trust that, and then they come up with
- 9:54Speaker 3: something as original. It's like they're gonna film them and
- 9:56Speaker 3: a condom.
- 9:58Speaker 1: That's a good example. I saw that and I was like,
- 10:00Speaker 1: oh yeah.
- 10:01Speaker 2: That configuration.
- 10:02Speaker 3: It's like they're making it on a condo movie and
- 10:05Speaker 3: it's like these two guys together.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Yeah, even if it's.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Even the critics go blah, I know the critics are
- 10:13Speaker 3: judging some other shit and yeah, and I know the
- 10:16Speaker 3: popcor meter is going to be up because peoplere gonna
- 10:18Speaker 3: be like, this shit is just you don't have to think.
- 10:20Speaker 3: You got to go in and just let them take
- 10:22Speaker 3: you somewhere.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that's interesting you say that.
- 10:24Speaker 4: You know what movie came out recently where the critics
- 10:27Speaker 4: panned it and but it did incredibly well in the
- 10:30Speaker 4: box office, that.
- 10:31Speaker 1: The scary movie seven, the last one, the last scary movie. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Whether you're a fan or not, I just find that
- 10:42Speaker 4: that sort of balance to.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Be just a sketch, right. It's like it's like, look,
- 10:46Speaker 2: where's ketch movie?
- 10:47Speaker 1: You know what it is.
- 10:48Speaker 2: You're just gonna have a.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Montage of absurd fun situations. And I love Marlon, I
- 10:54Speaker 3: love Sean Cast. They put together super fun. You know,
- 10:58Speaker 3: some shit in the movies, it's not gonna like you know,
- 11:01Speaker 3: some stuff is gonna be a miss, right, But then
- 11:05Speaker 3: you know that with the stuff that does hit, it's
- 11:08Speaker 3: gonna hit.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Harder than any movie you're gonna go watch. It's that
- 11:11Speaker 2: claims himself to be a comedy, right, right.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Because that's how hard I mean, Leo, you saw the movie, Yeah, right,
- 11:18Speaker 3: Like somethings is a miss.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Oh that's great, but that's the point of comedy, right, Like, right,
- 11:26Speaker 4: he's supposed to go and laugh and yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 3: So the studio says there are a couple of misses, right,
- 11:34Speaker 3: And I think the point I'm making with with him
- 11:37Speaker 3: and listening to him is like, after all, the ship
- 11:40Speaker 3: that does work and scary movie is is audacious, it's bold,
- 11:48Speaker 3: and he has an opinion, which is what comedy used
- 11:51Speaker 3: to be in cinema. You used to go, dude, Adam
- 11:56Speaker 3: Sandler movies used to make one hundred and fifty million, bro.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you're kidding me.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred undred and fifty hundred and two hundred
- 12:07Speaker 3: million US Adam Sandler. You know why, because he's like,
- 12:11Speaker 3: I'm here to make you laugh. Yeah, I'm not here
- 12:14Speaker 3: to make you think. I'm here to make you laugh.
- 12:16Speaker 3: But then when the movie ends, like, oh just kidding,
- 12:19Speaker 3: you also made me think yeah, And that's what comedy
- 12:21Speaker 3: used to do. Used to be a vessel for heart,
- 12:25Speaker 3: used to be a vessel for emotions. And now people
- 12:27Speaker 3: are just too scared to have our characters not fit
- 12:30Speaker 3: fit them all of everything else. So but but I'm
- 12:33Speaker 3: glad that Leo was in on this because that movie,
- 12:35Speaker 3: to me, it's you know, uh, you'll have some missus, right,
- 12:42Speaker 3: but the ship that does hit is because they're also
- 12:45Speaker 3: swinging that heart right. So if the missus miss hard,
- 12:49Speaker 3: then the swings that hit we hit hard, right, And
- 12:52Speaker 3: I got our movies are very timid, very scared.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Well why do you think that is? Why do you
- 12:55Speaker 1: think movies are timid and scared?
- 12:56Speaker 3: I think everyone's scared of today's society, cancel culture.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I think they think that.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Social media is going if if at preview that movie
- 13:05Speaker 3: gets reviewed badly by the trolls or the reviewers, or
- 13:11Speaker 3: the critics or the whoever goes to that first showing
- 13:15Speaker 3: Kiss Your Friday and Kiss Your Saturday showing goodbye, because
- 13:21Speaker 3: people are looking at the chatter. People are looking at
- 13:24Speaker 3: you know, what is all the people saying about that movie?
- 13:26Speaker 2: Is it good? Is it bad?
- 13:27Speaker 3: And if it's bad, you go our way into a
- 13:29Speaker 3: streaming and then that box office weekend is gone. I
- 13:32Speaker 3: will say Tropic Thunder and Team America, Team Ofmerica, yeah,
- 13:39Speaker 3: are probably the last of the Mohicans of that era
- 13:43Speaker 3: that said screw it, like break the window, like land
- 13:49Speaker 3: on the table, like we're gonna go hard and we'll
- 13:54Speaker 3: see where, We'll see what takes, you know.
- 13:56Speaker 2: And Robert Junior nominated for an Oscar.
- 13:59Speaker 3: You gotta nominator for an Oscar for playing a black
- 14:02Speaker 3: man so good man, so good.
- 14:05Speaker 2: But even black you.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Know, even the black community was like, okay't hate, you
- 14:10Speaker 3: can't hit like that.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Was it was pretty damn good hate, you know.
- 14:15Speaker 3: But but the way he did it was like his
- 14:17Speaker 3: character was the best character in the movie. And that's
- 14:20Speaker 3: why I also think it's like there's two things. Either
- 14:22Speaker 3: you you know, you create these characters that like talking
- 14:27Speaker 3: the talken nish of our communities, or that character leans
- 14:32Speaker 3: hard and becomes like the best part of it, and
- 14:35Speaker 3: like you can be timid, right, you again, you have
- 14:38Speaker 3: to swing hard.
- 14:39Speaker 2: You can't just like half swing it.
- 14:41Speaker 3: And I'm gonna flirt with the subject matter, but then
- 14:43Speaker 3: I'm gonna be let you just kidding this and other
- 14:45Speaker 3: things for you guys, if you like that, it's like
- 14:47Speaker 3: you can't negotiate with comedy. But but Traffic Thunder is
- 14:51Speaker 3: one of those interesting ones because that whole entire movie,
- 14:54Speaker 3: there was stuff that's grounded, yeah, there was stuff that
- 14:57Speaker 3: was just outrageously possible, yeah, yeah, and then everything in
- 15:02Speaker 3: between was just like, like, get out of my head.
- 15:07Speaker 3: I was thinking exactly what you were saying out loud.
- 15:10Speaker 3: You know, I don't know, I think that was I think.
- 15:12Speaker 4: I was so absurd that movie, Like I love absurd
- 15:16Speaker 4: sense of humor.
- 15:19Speaker 3: You know, if you don't like it, don't watch it, man,
- 15:21Speaker 3: Like yeah, I mean, look, so that's where I think
- 15:23Speaker 3: about comedy. And you know this is coming from a
- 15:25Speaker 3: guy who, like, for two hundred episodes, I was so
- 15:32Speaker 3: free and so fearless to.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Try random takes and random things.
- 15:38Speaker 3: I don't know that if I'd come back to comedy,
- 15:40Speaker 3: I'd have that same freedom. And maybe I would because
- 15:43Speaker 3: I'm the old school guy that can come in and
- 15:45Speaker 3: be like, we got a swing harder, you know, like
- 15:47Speaker 3: I can push the writer's room to like go places
- 15:49Speaker 3: that they're probably timid about.
- 15:51Speaker 2: But but I don't know.
- 15:52Speaker 3: I mean, I've been tunting around with comedy and coming
- 15:55Speaker 3: back to comedy.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Well, you're still good at it, man, you should, dude,
- 15:59Speaker 1: you should.
- 16:01Speaker 4: I understand why you wanted to do drama afterwards, right,
- 16:04Speaker 4: But I mean, but your comedic skills are so undeniable.
- 16:08Speaker 4: I don't I don't think you should deprive the world
- 16:11Speaker 4: of it, you know, I think I think you should.
- 16:13Speaker 1: I would love to see you.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Do some comedy. Man.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Maybe I'll do a comedy movie, yeah, and then be like,
- 16:20Speaker 3: here's why it's funny.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I have a crazy idea. I can't
- 16:26Speaker 3: pitch it here, but soon to come, I'll pitch it
- 16:29Speaker 3: to you. Okay, Sorry everyone at home.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's annoying to to, you know, to hear that out.
- 16:34Speaker 1: So what about what about water cooler TV shows? Right?
- 16:37Speaker 4: So you said, you know, you you did a show
- 16:39Speaker 4: where you felt free to swing hard and it worked
- 16:43Speaker 4: and it landed, and obviously you know, I did a
- 16:46Speaker 4: show that was a sort of a water cooler show time,
- 16:48Speaker 4: and so like, you know what, what do you think
- 16:51Speaker 4: the last of the water cooler shows were? And for
- 16:54Speaker 4: the audiences who don't understand that term, the water cooler
- 16:59Speaker 4: means at the office, there's a water cooler where you
- 17:02Speaker 4: go get water and usually you meet the other employees there.
- 17:05Speaker 1: That's where conversations are had.
- 17:07Speaker 3: I think one of one of the last ones to
- 17:11Speaker 3: do that beautifully was Game of Thrones.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:14Speaker 3: That was one of those few event planning moments where
- 17:17Speaker 3: people are like, where are you watching it? You're gonna
- 17:19Speaker 3: watch it tonight, you're watching it live, but you're gonna
- 17:20Speaker 3: record it.
- 17:21Speaker 2: What you're gonna do?
- 17:22Speaker 3: And I remember having in a shout out to my
- 17:25Speaker 3: boy Sean White, who's a legend of the snowboard uh
- 17:30Speaker 3: and skateboard Olympian and just like a beautiful.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Human being period.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Him and I were in conversations and we're like, Doug,
- 17:38Speaker 3: where are you watching the Game of Thrones finale?
- 17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you know where you're gonna watch? Him like, yeah,
- 17:42Speaker 2: let's watch it.
- 17:43Speaker 3: So we put together his friends and my friends and
- 17:44Speaker 3: we did a whole watch party. I was sitting on
- 17:47Speaker 3: the floor with pillows on the couches. We had food
- 17:50Speaker 3: and watched this the last finale, and I went through
- 17:54Speaker 3: all that emotions together.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Everyone had caught up.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, and and so that was one of
- 18:00Speaker 3: those moments where people didn't want to ruin it for
- 18:02Speaker 3: each other. Did you watch? I can't say anything, did
- 18:04Speaker 3: you watch. I'm not gonna say a word.
- 18:06Speaker 2: You know.
- 18:06Speaker 3: It's like that that magic thing with entertainment was bringing
- 18:08Speaker 3: us together on that way, on that level. Event television
- 18:13Speaker 3: is rare nowadays when it.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Hits you think that was the last, Like Breaking Bad
- 18:17Speaker 1: was like.
- 18:18Speaker 2: That, Breaking Bad I thought was big for its could following.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely not throw.
- 18:28Speaker 3: I would say that even Succession was a little yeah little,
- 18:34Speaker 3: It was was high level and was also really a
- 18:37Speaker 3: media again, but I wouldn't say that that was a
- 18:40Speaker 3: national event.
- 18:41Speaker 2: I think Game of Thrones was a little bit closer
- 18:44Speaker 2: to that.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Well, also Game of Throws sort of the themes of
- 18:48Speaker 4: that show was way more commercial, right, so reach reached so.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Many other people.
- 18:53Speaker 4: But yeah, Succession, that's a good that's a good one.
- 18:56Speaker 4: That's a good one, A current one. Trying to think
- 18:59Speaker 4: what else has been sort of current. That's m water cooler.
- 19:05Speaker 3: I would say, oh, you know, pretty good one was
- 19:11Speaker 3: squid Games.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Oh, squid Games, the first season of squid Games.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Was that moment? Yeah, that one was pretty good.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Yeah. People like Plurbious as well an Apple and there
- 19:22Speaker 1: they were sort of waiting.
- 19:24Speaker 4: Plurvis put yeah Plurbis, I asked him.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Plurbis on him?
- 19:29Speaker 1: Man, Yeah yeah, I did you watch it?
- 19:33Speaker 2: No, but I heard amazing things about it.
- 19:35Speaker 3: A friend of mine is like, you gotta watch actually
- 19:37Speaker 3: on my niece Ari Ari Pacheco. Shout out to Ari
- 19:41Speaker 3: Pacheco up in the North. She was always hitting me
- 19:43Speaker 3: up and like you gotta watch his uncle blah blah.
- 19:45Speaker 4: So it's like, yeah, yeah, well Vince Gilligan, right, who
- 19:48Speaker 4: did who did Breaking Bad?
- 19:50Speaker 1: I mean, he's such a freaking genius.
- 19:52Speaker 3: He's a genius. You know what we need to do?
- 19:54Speaker 3: Yeah we need to have Brian Cogman on the show.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, are we all supposed to.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Have dinner shut out? Yeah? But I was away on
- 20:04Speaker 2: the Richard Brian, Brian, I know.
- 20:09Speaker 3: You listen to this podcast, so uh, big shout out
- 20:12Speaker 3: to Brian Cogman. If just to bring you guys up
- 20:15Speaker 3: to speed, Brian Cogman is one of the most prolific
- 20:19Speaker 3: writers in Hollywood. Is a four time Emmy winning writer.
- 20:24Speaker 3: He was a massive writer for A Game of Thrones.
- 20:28Speaker 3: He's created some really prolific stuff and he's currently doing
- 20:32Speaker 3: a massive, massive show that we're not allowed to talk about.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you know which one? I think, So don't
- 20:39Speaker 3: say he's doing a massive show. Yeah, like like that
- 20:44Speaker 3: that budget is gonna probably break at least one fitty Wow.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Really, he's gonna do a massive show. But the point
- 20:51Speaker 3: is he's he's brilliant. He's not you talk about vinyl,
- 20:54Speaker 3: the guy posted a different vinyl. He plays a week
- 20:57Speaker 3: on Instagram if you oh no, I gotta check out.
- 21:01Speaker 3: So he's like, he's just an amazing dude. But he'll
- 21:03Speaker 3: be a great chat and he can talk about development,
- 21:06Speaker 3: talk about the you know what that process, and also
- 21:10Speaker 3: how what was it like, did you know you were
- 21:12Speaker 3: in the biggest TV show of the last twenty years?
- 21:15Speaker 2: Like, yeah, you know what'd be great?
- 21:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I And I think I told you this story.
- 21:20Speaker 4: I did a movie with Michael Bean and I was
- 21:24Speaker 4: at the time, I was doing a TV show for
- 21:27Speaker 4: CBS and they were replacing an actor, and.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I was and I was like, maybe maybe Michael you know,
- 21:34Speaker 1: pardon me, Sean Bean. Sean Bean. I worked with Michael Bean.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Also Sean Bean, who was in season one Game of Roads,
- 21:41Speaker 4: and we were doing a movie together in the Ukraine,
- 21:43Speaker 4: and I was like.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Yay, Sean Wan, you ever think about doing TV?
- 21:48Speaker 4: And he was like yeah, this was back when, like
- 21:51Speaker 4: remember our actors either did TV or film or whatever.
- 21:54Speaker 1: And he was like, yeah, you know, I'd be open
- 21:56Speaker 1: to it. I just did this pilot. I don't know
- 21:59Speaker 1: if it's going to be any good. It's supposed to
- 22:01Speaker 1: have like dragons in it, and I don't know.
- 22:05Speaker 2: I go, well, I'm I'm love love. Yeah. Yeah, I
- 22:09Speaker 2: was like. I was like, well, I'm doing this this
- 22:10Speaker 2: TV show for CBS.
- 22:13Speaker 4: It's called Chaos and it's Tomspyziali's are you know? He
- 22:17Speaker 4: went on to do The Watchman and The Leftovers and
- 22:20Speaker 4: he's our he's our showrunner. But they're they're replacing an
- 22:22Speaker 4: actor and you might be great. I don't know if
- 22:24Speaker 4: you do something for CBS.
- 22:25Speaker 1: He was well, I.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Gotta wait, man, I did this thing and then they
- 22:29Speaker 4: might have dragons in it.
- 22:30Speaker 1: And it's on HBO. And I was like, oh, I
- 22:32Speaker 1: was on HBO. That's cool. I go Dragons. I was like, okay, HBO. Yeah.
- 22:37Speaker 1: I was like, HBO did dragons, Okay, all right? And
- 22:41Speaker 1: so I was waiting for him this true story man,
- 22:44Speaker 1: true story.
- 22:44Speaker 4: I was we were in the Ukraine, and I was
- 22:47Speaker 4: just waiting for him to tell me if his show
- 22:50Speaker 4: got picked up or not so that I could recommend
- 22:52Speaker 4: them for my show.
- 22:54Speaker 1: And then the show got picked up and I was like, okay,
- 22:56Speaker 1: we'll see how that does.
- 22:57Speaker 2: And what was it like when you it's the first episode.
- 23:01Speaker 1: I was just well, truth be Told.
- 23:04Speaker 2: It wasn't.
- 23:05Speaker 4: It wasn't no no after Truth be Told, it wasn't
- 23:09Speaker 4: my type of I didn't think that it was my
- 23:12Speaker 4: type of genre, right, I was okay, this is like
- 23:17Speaker 4: like is this like Harry Potter?
- 23:19Speaker 2: Like who is this four? But it really was about
- 23:23Speaker 2: it was great character work.
- 23:25Speaker 4: Oh oh, the everything, the story, everything, And so I
- 23:28Speaker 4: was like, all right, I watched it, and then I
- 23:29Speaker 4: started watching it and I was like, wow, this thing's.
- 23:32Speaker 2: A jargon different show. Yeah.
- 23:35Speaker 4: And then all of a sudden the show became the
- 23:37Speaker 4: biggest show in the world, and I just I just
- 23:39Speaker 4: kept thinking about these conversations.
- 23:41Speaker 3: You know, I would have I have so many questions
- 23:43Speaker 3: for Brian, Yeah, what is it going to take? Or
- 23:46Speaker 3: will it be a moment where we would have, you know,
- 23:50Speaker 3: water cooler moment again with with TV?
- 23:54Speaker 2: Is there a movie? You know?
- 23:55Speaker 3: And I think we have movies that pop up, like
- 23:57Speaker 3: there's an eight twenty four movie, or there's like a
- 23:59Speaker 3: Peel movie, you know something you're like, oh man, this
- 24:02Speaker 3: is this is crazy. You know I told you anything
- 24:05Speaker 3: about it, you wanna watch it. But television has such
- 24:07Speaker 3: a power too, week week after week to bring people.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Together like what you know, what do you think about that?
- 24:15Speaker 4: It's funny you bring up eight twenty four because I've
- 24:20Speaker 4: talked to people who have done stuff for them. I've
- 24:22Speaker 4: I've talked to people who've worked there, and their business
- 24:25Speaker 4: model was very similar to what HBO's business model was
- 24:29Speaker 4: back then.
- 24:30Speaker 1: And HBO's business model back then was like if we
- 24:33Speaker 1: hire you, we want you to do what you do right,
- 24:36Speaker 1: you know.
- 24:36Speaker 4: And when I did my show there, I remember, I
- 24:39Speaker 4: remember my showrunner came from Network TV and he was
- 24:43Speaker 4: so shocked at the notes that he got from HBO.
- 24:47Speaker 4: And one of the he said, he said, I got
- 24:49Speaker 4: one note from HBO, and they were like, just make
- 24:51Speaker 4: it more fucked up, right, that was the one note.
- 24:54Speaker 4: And this is coming from a guy who would.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Get reams and reams and reams of notes from network TV. Right.
- 25:01Speaker 4: So to answer that question, and this is my opinion,
- 25:04Speaker 4: I feel that if an artist of that caliber is allowed.
- 25:08Speaker 1: To do what they do, then you'll get water cooler tea.
- 25:11Speaker 2: You get out of the way.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Get out of their way, man, don't pretend you're a
- 25:14Speaker 3: toyteller and you're just curious, the.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Same way that A twenty four gets out of the
- 25:18Speaker 4: way of their artists and lets them do what they do,
- 25:21Speaker 4: the same way that I'm sure you know HBO did
- 25:24Speaker 4: with Game of Thrones, and we just brought up Vince
- 25:27Speaker 4: Gilligan right down curbs and breaking bad the same way
- 25:31Speaker 4: that those people got out of his way. You know,
- 25:33Speaker 4: there are certain artists that that are creators like that
- 25:36Speaker 4: that you have to.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Let them do what they do.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Goes back to what you were saying the other in
- 25:41Speaker 3: the other episode, which is it's going back to the seventies.
- 25:45Speaker 3: It's about it's about the director, it's about the writers,
- 25:48Speaker 3: by the actor, you know, it's about those people.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Actually telling you the story.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to trust them. You got to trust them.
- 25:54Speaker 4: I mean, there are certain people who are who have
- 25:57Speaker 4: really strong voices, and you're hiring them for that reason.
- 26:01Speaker 4: So why note them the death? Why why change their vision?
- 26:06Speaker 4: Why try to?
- 26:07Speaker 3: And especially if their notes are based in fear, based
- 26:12Speaker 3: in self preservation.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Correct, correct, based in based in uh, them wanting to
- 26:22Speaker 4: put their fingerprints on it and say, see that, that's thankful.
- 26:25Speaker 4: That's my fingerprint now, right, that's my note.
- 26:27Speaker 1: That's so it's it.
- 26:29Speaker 4: No longer services the quality of the show. It services you.
- 26:34Speaker 4: You wanting to put your your hand on it.
- 26:37Speaker 2: It that's great.
- 26:38Speaker 3: I have some stuff that I'm developing the I'm excited
- 26:40Speaker 3: about that hopefully. You know, this conversation was actually very
- 26:44Speaker 3: instrumental and like understanding, how do you sell something of
- 26:48Speaker 3: you know, high genre and like you know, we're working
- 26:50Speaker 3: on sci fi, We're working on on vengeance and stuff
- 26:54Speaker 3: like that. So I think it's like, what about those
- 26:56Speaker 3: themes you know that that can tap into humanity and
- 26:59Speaker 3: make people go, I can't wait to see this person
- 27:01Speaker 3: go through all this stuff. And then like, you know,
- 27:03Speaker 3: how do you how do you bury the leads in
- 27:05Speaker 3: a really fantastic a way, Like I think it's I
- 27:08Speaker 3: got to go back to that that discovery that things,
- 27:11Speaker 3: you know, continue to mold as you watch every minute,
- 27:14Speaker 3: you know. I think that's that's like a really good
- 27:15Speaker 3: reminder of you know, knowing that intentionally that's the development
- 27:19Speaker 3: you got to put into.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Yeah, that's awesome to hear that you're doing that.
- 27:21Speaker 4: I mean, you know, we're in the super exciting time
- 27:23Speaker 4: right now, right where the eight twenty fours and the
- 27:26Speaker 4: Neons and the and the Focus and the Magnolias of
- 27:30Speaker 4: the world are just producing incredible stuff where where it's
- 27:34Speaker 4: not star based or it's not the star director based,
- 27:39Speaker 4: it's it's story based. You know, the stories are becoming
- 27:43Speaker 4: the stars, right and people are coming to the theater
- 27:47Speaker 4: and they're paying their their their twenty bucks to come
- 27:49Speaker 4: see these awesome stories. That doesn't that doesn't check a box, right,
- 27:55Speaker 4: it's not stop, it's.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Not and there's no no, no knock to.
- 28:01Speaker 4: There's a lot of superhero stuff that I like, you know,
- 28:03Speaker 4: but it's not it's not trying to fulfill some sort
- 28:05Speaker 4: of quota that they feel.
- 28:07Speaker 1: That's that's fear based.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Well, superheroes, the superhero genre people forget that those are
- 28:14Speaker 3: actually heavily structure in blueprint from soap operas.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Oh soaps, Okay.
- 28:24Speaker 3: They're really soaps with capes, and people forget about that.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Like, yes there is high stakes, Yes there is some
- 28:31Speaker 2: big action moment.
- 28:33Speaker 3: But at the root of it is rooted in sorrow
- 28:38Speaker 3: is rooted and becoming is rooting in relationships and families
- 28:42Speaker 3: and community and like all these things that kind of
- 28:46Speaker 3: play on the factors of your human experience and then.
- 28:49Speaker 2: You're throwing superpowers and you're like, what am I?
- 28:52Speaker 3: It's a soap and when you tie those themes together
- 28:56Speaker 3: and that's what makes it, Like that's why Marvel did
- 28:58Speaker 3: so great.
- 28:59Speaker 2: They made it in.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Tire soap series where it's just like surprises and turns
- 29:03Speaker 3: and twists and betrayals.
- 29:04Speaker 2: And you know it's soap. Is a soap.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Did you see did you see the latest Mandalorian movie?
- 29:11Speaker 3: No, it was in the movie theaters.
- 29:15Speaker 1: It was it was excellent.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Man, you loved it.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Flawless.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Oh I can't wait flawless.
- 29:20Speaker 3: I haven't heard much about it yet, but I love
- 29:22Speaker 3: the Mandalorian. I love Pete Rascal, I low Grogu, I
- 29:25Speaker 3: love all that stuff.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Oh, man, the execution was superb.
- 29:30Speaker 2: That's great, superb. I did hear it was like one
- 29:33Speaker 2: big episode of Mandalorian. Is that true? I don't know.
- 29:38Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 29:38Speaker 4: I was.
- 29:40Speaker 2: I was.
- 29:40Speaker 1: I went to go see it, and I went. I
- 29:43Speaker 1: went with no expectations.
- 29:45Speaker 4: I went to just have a visceral reaction, right the
- 29:48Speaker 4: same way that I judge anything that I put on TV,
- 29:51Speaker 4: right like the first five minutes. If if my visceral
- 29:54Speaker 4: reaction is like, oh, this isn't good, I stop it.
- 29:57Speaker 1: But I went with no. I just had a visceral reaction,
- 30:00Speaker 1: and and and not once was I bored, not once,
- 30:03Speaker 1: Not once did I feel like there were a false moment.
- 30:09Speaker 4: The way that they balanced the Grogul character, which is,
- 30:13Speaker 4: you know, it's like in the eighties.
- 30:14Speaker 1: You remember remember when like.
- 30:16Speaker 4: Like Gremlins and like what was that, not the Gremlin
- 30:20Speaker 4: but the the little furry cute thing Gizmo. Remember the
- 30:26Speaker 4: eighties they would have stuff like that, like the Gizmo character, whereas.
- 30:30Speaker 2: They have their own story.
- 30:33Speaker 4: Yeah, man, yeah, and it's it's very much went back
- 30:36Speaker 4: to like the eighties Gizmo or like the Ewoks, remember
- 30:41Speaker 4: back in the Return of the Jedi. Yeah, so it
- 30:44Speaker 4: has an element of that, but it was grounded and
- 30:47Speaker 4: real and like the special effects were terrific, and uh
- 30:51Speaker 4: I just I was like, oh, yes, there's still like
- 30:54Speaker 4: hope for like these big, these big tent pole movies.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Right to be well secuted. Man, that's awesome.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Yeah, well, shout out to Peter Pascal Latino brother doing
- 31:06Speaker 3: his thing.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Well.
- 31:09Speaker 3: On that note, I'm going to keep that in mind
- 31:11Speaker 3: and we're going to make sure we in buy Brian
- 31:12Speaker 3: Cogman because I think he can tell us how do
- 31:15Speaker 3: we go back to that, you know, through that experiment
- 31:18Speaker 3: when we all come together in one living room and
- 31:20Speaker 3: just like our shock together and while together. This is
- 31:23Speaker 3: warm about the Ramadi Rodriguez, thank you for listening to
- 31:26Speaker 3: those amigos.
