- 0:27Speaker 2: a good one I did.
- 0:28Speaker 1: It's more of a blend. It's not really a dalmation.
- 0:30Speaker 1: My hair's not spotted, but it definitely blends well.
- 0:33Speaker 2: But thank you.

- 0:57Speaker 1: We got a good one today. We got a good
- 0:59Speaker 1: one today. Fred's he's local, you know, he's out of California.
- 1:02Speaker 1: He was the number five overall draft pick in a
- 1:05Speaker 1: two thousand and nine draft taken by the j E
- 1:09Speaker 1: t X Jets, Jets, Jets. All right, yes, played ten season,
- 1:13Speaker 1: four different teams. He's one of only two quarterbacks in
- 1:16Speaker 1: their first two years to go to the AFC Championship Game.
- 1:20Speaker 1: He worked for Fox Sports. He calls games now. He's
- 1:24Speaker 1: a USC m F and legend. Y'all please welcome in
- 1:30Speaker 1: Mark Sanchez, ladies showman, thank you, thank you. I promise
- 1:33Speaker 1: she will never get another intro like that ever again.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I know you do TV, but that is like one
- 1:37Speaker 1: of the you know that is that is a big
- 1:40Speaker 1: time energy.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I feel good now you feel that energy. I didn't
- 1:43Speaker 3: know when I walked in. I was a little worried
- 1:45Speaker 3: watching the whole setup. Yeah no, we just and then
- 1:48Speaker 3: the intro scared me before the you know, the Dalmatian
- 1:51Speaker 3: and then but we're good now I'm on.
- 1:53Speaker 2: This is my uncle though, man, like he this is
- 1:55Speaker 2: my uncle.
- 1:56Speaker 1: This the deacon. You gotta think when you first saw
- 1:58Speaker 1: this guy, he didn't not look so I'm actually yeah,
- 2:05Speaker 1: like he looks like he's like one of those deep
- 2:10Speaker 1: southern families. Were like, yeah, I'm the uncle that's younger
- 2:12Speaker 1: than you know what I'm saying, like, this is where
- 2:15Speaker 1: we're at, right, now, so it's all good, it's all acceptable.
- 2:19Speaker 1: But Mark, this is my my first question. It's very current.
- 2:23Speaker 1: All right, you were on Hard Knocks at one point
- 2:25Speaker 1: in time. Have you watched the Hard Knocks this year
- 2:28Speaker 1: and have you been keeping up with it? Knowing that
- 2:30Speaker 1: it's the Jets. A lot of people didn't want the Jets.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers didn't want to be on there, and we
- 2:35Speaker 1: all kind of have our ways about Hard Knocks until
- 2:38Speaker 1: all of a sudden you're on there.
- 2:39Speaker 2: So it's give me your opinion on it.
- 2:40Speaker 3: So it is interesting, and there is a shift I
- 2:42Speaker 3: think from the lead up to it and then once
- 2:46Speaker 3: you're on it. I think the lead up is a
- 2:48Speaker 3: little scarier and bigger, and you know these big, bad
- 2:50Speaker 3: cameras are going to be in there. But then when
- 2:52Speaker 3: you're actually on it, you're so laser focused. And you
- 2:55Speaker 3: guys know this as former players. You're just trying to
- 2:58Speaker 3: you know, you guys are trying to get the ball back,
- 2:59Speaker 3: we're trying to score points like that. Yeah, you don't
- 3:01Speaker 3: even think about it, and you say the same silly
- 3:03Speaker 3: stuff that you normally would. I think, are you miked up?
- 3:07Speaker 3: So it's most of the time like everybody who's kind
- 3:10Speaker 3: of mic or do you know, but in the game,
- 3:13Speaker 3: certain players, right like specifically generally the quarterback, you know,
- 3:18Speaker 3: for this one, it's Scarett Wilson, it's Sauce Gardner, it's
- 3:21Speaker 3: Quinn Williams. They want, you know, the superstars, and then
- 3:24Speaker 3: they'll throw the mics on some of the guys competing
- 3:26Speaker 3: for jobs, and that'll be the you know, kind of
- 3:28Speaker 3: feel good story of the guy trying to make the
- 3:30Speaker 3: team and he could be a special teamer and injuries
- 3:32Speaker 3: could happen, you know, all the same drama that they
- 3:34Speaker 3: love to unfold. It inevitably unfolds in thirty two locker
- 3:37Speaker 3: rooms around the league. They just capture one of them.
- 3:40Speaker 3: But yes, I have been watching only because we were
- 3:43Speaker 3: on it before. They do such a great job of,
- 3:48Speaker 3: most importantly just making the players and the stories more
- 3:52Speaker 3: of who they are, right right. Like you know, people
- 3:54Speaker 3: think like, Okay, money changes you. No, I think it
- 3:57Speaker 3: just makes you more of who you are. If you're
- 3:59Speaker 3: charitable with one hundred doll you're gonna be charitable with
- 4:01Speaker 3: a million dollars, you know what I mean. So this
- 4:02Speaker 3: show should make you more of who you are. Well,
- 4:06Speaker 3: if you're the raw, raw guy. If you're the breakdown
- 4:09Speaker 3: the team guy, you know what I mean, If that's
- 4:10Speaker 3: your role on the team, it's going to be even
- 4:13Speaker 3: sexier on this show. Well if you're not that guy
- 4:16Speaker 3: and you try to be that guy, oh dude, it's
- 4:19Speaker 3: like the worst. You know, like when somebody just tries
- 4:22Speaker 3: to break it down and you're just like, ooh, that
- 4:23Speaker 3: guy couldn't even motivate me to eat a sandwich, you
- 4:26Speaker 3: know what I mean, Like this is a free sandwich
- 4:28Speaker 3: at that So it's I'm happy for Aaron because I've
- 4:32Speaker 3: known him for a while. It's been a polarizing character
- 4:36Speaker 3: in the NFL soap opera that is every season, right,
- 4:39Speaker 3: and now people are starting to get a chance to
- 4:41Speaker 3: see him the way he is as a teammate behind
- 4:44Speaker 3: closed doors without you know, when you check all of
- 4:47Speaker 3: your own personal political agenda, baggage, all the stuff at
- 4:51Speaker 3: the door and you can just focus on football and
- 4:53Speaker 3: being a good teammate and working hard and trying to
- 4:55Speaker 3: win games. I mean, what else do you want? The
- 4:58Speaker 3: dude's unbelievable to camp last week, they yes, Decker was there.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I got a dude. The kid makes a cameo in
- 5:07Speaker 3: Hard Knocks and Braylan Edwards is just blocking my visual
- 5:10Speaker 3: the whole time. Dude, I'm you know this was this
- 5:16Speaker 3: was about me? It was it was funny. They were
- 5:21Speaker 3: doing the targets right yeah, yeah? Was this after or
- 5:24Speaker 3: doing this was during practice and they're walking over to
- 5:26Speaker 3: start scrimmaging with the Buccaneers and they're doing all these
- 5:29Speaker 3: targets and Zach Wilson might have hit one in like
- 5:33Speaker 3: all thirty of the throws from three quarterbacks, but in
- 5:35Speaker 3: the episode the night before, I'm like, dude, you guys
- 5:38Speaker 3: couldn't miss. So what's going on with the editing here?
- 5:40Speaker 1: What are we doing?
- 5:42Speaker 3: So I gave him a hard time and then Braylan
- 5:44Speaker 3: blocked my visual on that.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Was there ever a moment that caught you off guard
- 5:47Speaker 1: when you did the hard Yes? So I did it
- 5:50Speaker 1: with Rex right one, yes, and he was already He's
- 5:53Speaker 1: like for the camera. Oh he was bill for it,
- 5:55Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I think that's so important
- 5:58Speaker 1: to talk about. It was like Phil wants to get
- 6:00Speaker 1: a team. That's they want to show.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Yes, they want Yes, you want to let's go get
- 6:07Speaker 3: some and ice cream exactly. And that was that was
- 6:10Speaker 3: very Rex just off the cuff and like, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 3: as defensive guys, you'll appreciate this. As offensive guys, it
- 6:16Speaker 3: kind of freaked me out. But Rex was like, I
- 6:18Speaker 3: don't care if we play the game. I don't care
- 6:20Speaker 3: if we just fight in the parking lot, like, we'll
- 6:22Speaker 3: just figure it out. And I'm like, well, offense doesn't
- 6:24Speaker 3: work like that. Okay, that worked for half the team.
- 6:27Speaker 3: We'll go study a little bit. You guys go kick
- 6:29Speaker 3: everyone's ass. We'll be there to try and score.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:31Speaker 3: But Rex was perfect for it, and I think the
- 6:34Speaker 3: guys on it are are shining the way they're supposed to,
- 6:37Speaker 3: and it just gives it really is for the fans,
- 6:39Speaker 3: and it gives them such insight on on what the
- 6:42Speaker 3: players are like. When you, you know, make fun of
- 6:44Speaker 3: other guys. The rookies have to do their rookie show.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Their rookie show was terrible this year. It was terrible.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Yes twice. I mean one of the guys went up
- 6:53Speaker 3: and did the the eight mile b Rabbit thing and
- 6:57Speaker 3: that was fine, but I just I was, you know, unimpressed.
- 7:02Speaker 3: You gotta do the coaches meeting. Yeah, that's like the
- 7:05Speaker 3: standard rookie show is right. You make fun of all
- 7:07Speaker 3: the coaches and maybe throw one or two players in there.
- 7:10Speaker 1: So they didn't do what we did. I did a
- 7:12Speaker 1: whole physio ball.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Under my shirt for Rex because this was before he
- 7:16Speaker 3: had the surgery, right right, and he was real big.
- 7:18Speaker 3: He was always snacking, so I had all these snacks
- 7:20Speaker 3: in the top of the phisio ball under my thing.
- 7:23Speaker 3: I put baby powder in my hair because he was
- 7:25Speaker 3: all great at you know, Oh dude, we had a
- 7:27Speaker 3: great team meeting.
- 7:28Speaker 1: People understand like that how much that brings teams together
- 7:32Speaker 1: when you have a good rookie show.
- 7:34Speaker 2: If you're not in the ladder, you don't understand that.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I tried to tell that it does matter. Teams they
- 7:42Speaker 1: have great locker room.
- 7:43Speaker 3: There is something. Okay, you have a great locker room,
- 7:46Speaker 3: you have a great rookie show, and you generally have
- 7:48Speaker 3: a good chaplain and a good chapel service. Yes, right, yeah,
- 7:51Speaker 3: am I right? The best teams?
- 7:53Speaker 2: I bet?
- 7:53Speaker 3: Yes, Yes, he does talk about your first those teams matter.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Those solid Our rookie show is legit. The rookies from
- 8:03Speaker 3: the year before would help the guys when they and
- 8:06Speaker 3: then here's kind of what we did. Check this out
- 8:09Speaker 3: might want to think about this. Here's some idea. You know,
- 8:11Speaker 3: you give them a little material just to make it good,
- 8:13Speaker 3: because you know you want everybody to enjoy it. The
- 8:16Speaker 3: tightest locker rooms are the best teams. When it becomes
- 8:20Speaker 3: different than just a job, when you're not clocking in
- 8:22Speaker 3: and clocking out, you transcend football and become a family.
- 8:27Speaker 3: You guys know. That's when it's like, okay, we have
- 8:29Speaker 3: an opportunity at least to make a run at this thing.
- 8:32Speaker 1: I just love that at the rookie show, and I
- 8:35Speaker 1: hate to beat a dead horse, but like, you got
- 8:37Speaker 1: to give effort. Oh and the veterans are going to
- 8:39Speaker 1: sign off with your terrible singer. It's all about the
- 8:42Speaker 1: effort did you put in?
- 8:44Speaker 3: Did you try? It's the older brother, yeah, yeah, right,
- 8:48Speaker 3: a passage.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Yeah, you know we all had to do it, and
- 8:51Speaker 1: so what kind of effort did you There's always that
- 8:54Speaker 1: one rookie that was like, I went to school to cool.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I'm not jumping up the I'm not gonna.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Sing like just like, come on, man, that's how you
- 9:02Speaker 1: gain the respect.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Nobody pick on me. You're gonna get the worst.
- 9:06Speaker 1: You're gonna get it. You're definitely gonna get it. We
- 9:09Speaker 1: had we had a couple of guys like that. But yeah,
- 9:11Speaker 1: that that locker room, that foundation is what I think
- 9:13Speaker 1: is what brings you together. Me and you, Carolina. Obviously
- 9:17Speaker 1: we had a great year, our good run. We're good teammates.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I'm sure you had some good teammates. I want to
- 9:23Speaker 1: kind of switch it. So two thousand, what was that?
- 9:27Speaker 1: I think twenty twelve I was I was able to
- 9:29Speaker 1: go to the White House, did an internship with FEMA,
- 9:33Speaker 1: and uh my, I guess my boss for the day
- 9:36Speaker 1: or for the for the week, got me in, went
- 9:38Speaker 1: to the White House, mass saw some some really cool stuff.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Situation room. Now I know you went back in twenty ten. Yeah,
- 9:47Speaker 1: so I got a T shirt on and you thought
- 9:49Speaker 1: it was just a dang you thought it was a steak.
- 9:52Speaker 2: You gotta.
- 9:54Speaker 1: So deep break like talk to me about what he's
- 9:57Speaker 1: your plus one?
- 9:58Speaker 2: Right? How many buttons you got on that yeat?
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's the Steve Hart.
- 10:03Speaker 3: So there's a different time. We didn't have the euro
- 10:06Speaker 3: cut back then. Yeah, okay, so this is you guys
- 10:10Speaker 3: at this we get invited, This is at the State st.
- 10:13Speaker 1: A t Yes, Hillary Clinton State dinner, right, No, it
- 10:16Speaker 1: was Obamama, Okay, yeah.
- 10:17Speaker 3: And the Mexican president was going to be there.
- 10:20Speaker 1: He's trying This is a totally different side story. Don't
- 10:23Speaker 1: even worry. Totally different side story. He's trying to reach.
- 10:26Speaker 1: He's reached, don't worry about it. That's an inside joke over.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Thomas is laughing back there because he knows this is
- 10:31Speaker 1: a reach.
- 10:32Speaker 3: I'm gonna let that.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, he owes us. He's gonna lose a bet too.
- 10:36Speaker 2: He's lose a bit off that.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I tried to see it in there.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Invited to the state dinner. Barack Obama, the President of Mexico,
- 10:43Speaker 3: is going to be there, and they're in the receiving line.
- 10:45Speaker 3: The whole deal. Well, I remember getting this invitation and
- 10:48Speaker 3: the Jets telling me about it in the PR office
- 10:50Speaker 3: and like there's a big deal. It's in the off season.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Worse you can make it. You know, they got a
- 10:54Speaker 3: private plane and all this stuff. I was like, whoa,
- 10:56Speaker 3: this is legit. So I called my brother and I
- 10:59Speaker 3: said my oldest brother Nick, who's an attorney, and I
- 11:01Speaker 3: was like, dude, we have a steak dinner at the
- 11:03Speaker 3: White House. And he goes what I said a steak dinner.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I get to go eat and like hang out at
- 11:09Speaker 3: the White House and he goes, did you just say
- 11:11Speaker 3: steak dinner? And I said yeah, they invited me to
- 11:13Speaker 3: a steak dinner and said, you idiot. I was like what.
- 11:17Speaker 3: He goes, state like United States like State of the
- 11:20Speaker 3: Union stat. I was like, oh, okay, well either way,
- 11:24Speaker 3: I'm sure they have food.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Cool.
- 11:26Speaker 3: He goes, steak dinner. What are you gonna bring a
- 11:28Speaker 3: knife in a one sauce? God, You're done? You know.
- 11:30Speaker 3: He just give me a hard time. So he informs
- 11:33Speaker 3: me on exactly what it is we take. I invited
- 11:35Speaker 3: Brick because I knew he'd be all over that. He's
- 11:38Speaker 3: been on the podcast, right, Yes, yeah, he's awesome, so
- 11:40Speaker 3: and and so, you know, diplomatic. He was just so
- 11:44Speaker 3: well put together. And I was like, this is the
- 11:45Speaker 3: prolific like kind of hang out for me and my
- 11:48Speaker 3: man Brick. So we go. Dude, we're on the plane
- 11:51Speaker 3: and I left my shirt and I left my shirt
- 11:57Speaker 3: in the in the terminal to leave on this private
- 12:03Speaker 3: plane in the FBO right, how like an idiot? And
- 12:06Speaker 3: I have a T shirt on, I have everything else.
- 12:08Speaker 3: And I was like, well, I don't want to wrinkle it.
- 12:09Speaker 3: I'll put it up. Boom, I'll take the jacket. I
- 12:11Speaker 3: just left it in the stall. So we're in the
- 12:13Speaker 3: air and I tell the airplane pilot, hey, we have
- 12:17Speaker 3: a problem. The wrong thing to tell the guy because
- 12:20Speaker 3: it was just about clothing, not like there's a problem
- 12:22Speaker 3: with the plane. He like went into freak out mode
- 12:24Speaker 3: for a second. We had to calm him down. Boom,
- 12:27Speaker 3: I said, hey, I'm missing a shirt. Whatever he calls
- 12:29Speaker 3: like ground control. They start calling around to men's warehouses
- 12:32Speaker 3: or like other places I could go. So we go
- 12:35Speaker 3: find a place I can get a shirt. I walked
- 12:37Speaker 3: into the store. It's a men's warehouse in DC close
- 12:39Speaker 3: to the White House, packed with people because it's freaking
- 12:42Speaker 3: prom for high school. So I'm like, I got like
- 12:45Speaker 3: two hundred bucks in my pocket. Hauller at the manager.
- 12:48Speaker 3: I'm like, yo, dude, my name's Mark Sanchez. I'm with
- 12:50Speaker 3: the Jazz. I gotta go to the White House right now.
- 12:52Speaker 3: It is like an emergency. I left a suit, blah
- 12:54Speaker 3: blah blah. He's like, you're gonna have to get the
- 12:55Speaker 3: whole getting kaboodle deal with.
- 12:58Speaker 2: That's all we got.
- 12:59Speaker 3: So I'm like, all right, I'm trying on this stuff.
- 13:01Speaker 3: I ripped one of the jackets. It was horrible. It
- 13:05Speaker 3: was horrible. Just to get to those pictures was such
- 13:07Speaker 3: an adventure, and Brick was just like, dude, this is
- 13:10Speaker 3: my chance to meet Barack Obama. You're gonna blow it.
- 13:16Speaker 3: So uh, it was an adventure to say the least.
- 13:19Speaker 3: But we had a ball. And you know, he loves
- 13:22Speaker 3: the Bears. Man, Barrocco loves the Bears. He does get
- 13:25Speaker 3: him to I try to look. He is Aago guy.
- 13:27Speaker 3: He didn't mess around. He said, no, I can't be
- 13:29Speaker 3: rooting for the jetson I'm a Bears guy.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I was like, all right, so who I heard Beyonce performed?
- 13:35Speaker 1: He had to stay dinner this. I don't know she
- 13:37Speaker 1: was married to jay Z at the time, either, was she.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I don't know in ten eleven she was married.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I apologize so, but I don't know if they became
- 13:47Speaker 1: like the couple at the time.
- 13:49Speaker 2: No, not, they are now. Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 13:52Speaker 3: The fact that that concert just happened in like this
- 13:54Speaker 3: outdoor ten I mean, dude, the whole night was surreal.
- 13:58Speaker 3: You know, I'm like thinking, like, oh, can I take
- 13:59Speaker 3: the silver we're with me, I'm like, oh my god,
- 14:01Speaker 3: then I'm gonna be on like the FBI's wanted. You
- 14:03Speaker 3: don't know what to do there, You just try and
- 14:05Speaker 3: act natural. And I felt like such a square.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But was this like the top of the like the
- 14:10Speaker 1: food chain at this point time in your life, Like
- 14:12Speaker 1: had you done anything even close to this? And then
- 14:14Speaker 1: how do you ever like measure up to this again?
- 14:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm still trying, man, and it's been a failing effort.
- 14:21Speaker 3: So thanks for reminding me that it was. It was
- 14:27Speaker 3: pretty I mean that whole time with the Jets, especially
- 14:30Speaker 3: the first couple of years, were this incredible blur of
- 14:36Speaker 3: some failures but mostly successes, and like that, like almost
- 14:41Speaker 3: top of the mountaintop, trying to get to a super Bowl,
- 14:43Speaker 3: meeting people like that, meeting people out in public after
- 14:45Speaker 3: games with my family that we've been fans of. Yea,
- 14:49Speaker 3: you know freaking Leonardo DiCaprio. You see anybody else or
- 14:52Speaker 3: people when they start to know your name, yes, or
- 14:54Speaker 3: you're you see somebody and they're like, yo, see Shack
- 14:57Speaker 3: at like a pool party in Vegas. He's like such
- 14:59Speaker 3: a on the mike. I'm like, dude, are you kidding me,
- 15:03Speaker 3: shock Doug, like we made it, you know, like it's
- 15:07Speaker 3: just uh, it was a it was a really cool feeling.
- 15:10Speaker 1: And that was no different so being the overall you know,
- 15:13Speaker 1: the fifth overall pick in the in the draft was
- 15:15Speaker 1: a two thousand and nine, being the fifth overall pick,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and then going to those two AFC championships your first
- 15:21Speaker 1: two years. Like, what do you think your greatest NFL
- 15:24Speaker 1: accomplishment pofs.
- 15:27Speaker 3: It's a great question. God, I think I think those
- 15:30Speaker 3: couple of those playoff games on the road were some
- 15:33Speaker 3: of my favorite. I remember I remember Thomas Jones almost
- 15:38Speaker 3: beating me up.
- 15:38Speaker 1: T Jones, Yes, Thomas q C.
- 15:43Speaker 3: He threatened to kick my ass because I tried to
- 15:45Speaker 3: throw like a little one step slam on the goal
- 15:47Speaker 3: line against the Bengals in the first round of the
- 15:49Speaker 3: playoffs in the wild card.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I was like a lookie run call and you want
- 15:53Speaker 1: to do your own thing, and it was just.
- 15:54Speaker 3: A walk in touchdown for we scored on the next play.
- 15:59Speaker 3: But he grabbed me by the face mask and he said,
- 16:01Speaker 3: you know, with much stronger language, but if you ever
- 16:03Speaker 3: do that again, I'm gonna kick your ass in front
- 16:04Speaker 3: of everybody. Yeah, it's like, yes, sir. I was like,
- 16:08Speaker 3: let's just hand this off. The San Diego game we
- 16:11Speaker 3: played against the Chargers. Gosh, I think I'm pretty sure
- 16:16Speaker 3: I played for free that game because I bought like
- 16:18Speaker 3: two hundred plus tickets. Oh and then after the game,
- 16:22Speaker 3: Thomas Jones got mad at me again because I got
- 16:24Speaker 3: to say hi to all my family members. Thomas. You know,
- 16:28Speaker 3: I mean, he's he can act. He's like and he's
- 16:30Speaker 3: really funny, but he's just quiet and doesn't like he's
- 16:33Speaker 3: not as outgoing, you know, he's not as I don't know,
- 16:37Speaker 3: he's not as bubbly as love people. You always got
- 16:40Speaker 3: this tough exterior. Well, when he wants to joke with you,
- 16:43Speaker 3: he's funny and so I'm holding up the bus and
- 16:47Speaker 3: so he cause people are like honking the horn, like dude,
- 16:50Speaker 3: let's go. We got to fly back home. We got
- 16:52Speaker 3: a game next with like all right onto the next
- 16:54Speaker 3: you know, and I'm still like, wow, this is crazy.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Thank you Aunt Linda, you know, saying hello to everybody,
- 17:00Speaker 3: and he goes, man, get your rookie ass on the bus.
- 17:03Speaker 3: I don't care about all your skater friends for.
- 17:05Speaker 1: The sick game, bro, just.
- 17:11Speaker 3: The whole bus is just laughing at me. So it was,
- 17:15Speaker 3: it was those are great times with those playoffs.
- 17:18Speaker 1: It's got to be really cool being a rookie quarterback
- 17:21Speaker 1: on that type of team, big veteran presence, great defensively,
- 17:25Speaker 1: all these big personalities, including your coach, and you're kind
- 17:29Speaker 1: of the the cog that's kind of making it go.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Uh what was it like being a rookie in that moment?
- 17:34Speaker 1: Also, I listened to a couple of your other podcasts,
- 17:37Speaker 1: things you were talking about, and you got vets like
- 17:39Speaker 1: Alfanka didn't even talk to.
- 17:41Speaker 3: You, right, dude until the playoffs.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you like, he didn't even talk to me.
- 17:45Speaker 3: I don't even He just didn't talk to rookies.
- 17:47Speaker 2: And he would talk to somebody else to talk to him.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Yeah, hey, let's switch up the stats down Al wants this. Okay,
- 17:55Speaker 3: we did.
- 17:56Speaker 1: He knows I'm here right ted Washington to this second.
- 18:00Speaker 3: I do something. Yeah, that's I mean, it's a vet thing.
- 18:03Speaker 3: You gotta you gotta earn the respect whatever that means.
- 18:05Speaker 3: That's old school vet though it is very you won't
- 18:08Speaker 3: see that today, like you lose over time.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Rubin Ruben did that? He tell ay, go tell that rookie.
- 18:14Speaker 1: I want so one exact Hey, rook So, yeah, like
- 18:17Speaker 1: you don't you don't see that. That's I'm not gonna
- 18:19Speaker 1: say that's when the NFL was fun. But that was
- 18:21Speaker 1: just a different time, a different times. It's a different time,
- 18:24Speaker 1: a different a different hazing. Well, I think it's so
- 18:27Speaker 1: different also because uh and you covered college. We'll probably
- 18:30Speaker 1: we're gonna dive into that a little bit too. But
- 18:32Speaker 1: it's you know, a lot of more players nowadays. We
- 18:35Speaker 1: didn't grow up knowing each other, right, we didn't know
- 18:37Speaker 1: each other and so when you played a different color jersey,
- 18:39Speaker 1: you were just the enemy. That's the only way I
- 18:41Speaker 1: knew you was just an enemy versus now everybody's recruited
- 18:44Speaker 1: the same. Everybody's sure social media, so like the season
- 18:48Speaker 1: to reach out to they kind of know each other.
- 18:50Speaker 2: So it's a little bit different, you know.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Interesting maybe you had a maybe it's kind of like
- 18:55Speaker 1: that with all the Southern California quarterbacks that all play
- 18:59Speaker 1: find their wayl at some point.
- 19:01Speaker 3: I mean, you see each other growing up. You see
- 19:03Speaker 3: the lineage when it started with really like I mean
- 19:07Speaker 3: Marinovitch way back, but like Carson, Carson Palmer, Matt Liner,
- 19:12Speaker 3: and then John David Booty ended up coming in from
- 19:14Speaker 3: Louisiana played two years and then I got to play.
- 19:18Speaker 3: But then Barkley, Cody Kestler, like that Southern California group
- 19:23Speaker 3: of guys, and so you look up to all those guys,
- 19:25Speaker 3: darnold all of them, and it's important. It means something
- 19:29Speaker 3: that in your community, in your region, that you know
- 19:33Speaker 3: you're the guy and they're comparing you to the guys
- 19:35Speaker 3: who've come before you. Yeah, warned that Cardinal and Gold, Like,
- 19:38Speaker 3: that's a big deal running down in the coliseum. That's
- 19:40Speaker 3: a historic spot with you know, popes and the best
- 19:45Speaker 3: in rock and roll, in music, Olympics, USC football, like
- 19:49Speaker 3: there's some Super Bowls, Like there's some serious heritage and
- 19:54Speaker 3: tradition with the coliseum. So that there was always something like, Wow,
- 19:58Speaker 3: you're just proud to be a part of it, and
- 20:00Speaker 3: I don't want to let anybody down, you know, there
- 20:02Speaker 3: was there was that feeling like I got a responsibility here,
- 20:05Speaker 3: all right.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Fact, go ahead.
- 20:07Speaker 1: My wife Jackie, her grandfather was a usc UH student
- 20:13Speaker 1: body president when he went there.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Let's go back in. I don't know what year. I
- 20:17Speaker 2: don't know what year it was, but it was he was.
- 20:20Speaker 1: He's a big time of lump, like goes to every game.
- 20:23Speaker 1: When y'all play Notre Dame, y'all got a game, he
- 20:27Speaker 1: is there, Like when I tell you, spends millions of
- 20:31Speaker 1: dollars on USC over the years. He loves USC so
- 20:35Speaker 1: much he named his son. His grandson's name is Troy.
- 20:40Speaker 1: That's how much he loves you. As I'm not even
- 20:43Speaker 1: the way to liven Hey. I mean you guys all
- 20:46Speaker 1: in yea all that's the only way.
- 20:48Speaker 3: That's what it is.
- 20:48Speaker 1: So I'm a guy from small country town, was never
- 20:52Speaker 1: really in the spotlight until really I got to like
- 20:55Speaker 1: the league.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I don't know about you in Alabama, but you're.
- 20:59Speaker 1: A guy high school spotlight, college spotlight, NFL spotlight, rookie spotlight.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Even now you're kind of somewhat stolen it in a way.
- 21:08Speaker 1: What is what has that taught you over the years.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's a white hot spotlight, especially when
- 21:15Speaker 3: you get somewhere like the Jets. I think your unique
- 21:21Speaker 3: upbringing is not exploited but brought to the forefront, like
- 21:25Speaker 3: being a Mexican American, Hispanic American. That's been huge for
- 21:28Speaker 3: me and that kind of support from a very loyal
- 21:32Speaker 3: fan base that I mean, they don't care whether you well, you.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Look great different, right, Like that's the thing, right, that's
- 21:39Speaker 1: another selling point.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Mark was going to New York.
- 21:43Speaker 3: But I'm trying. Yeah, So you know, it's it just
- 21:48Speaker 3: becomes what you sign up for and you always remember that, right.
- 21:51Speaker 3: And I think one of the biggest lessons is, you know,
- 21:55Speaker 3: you can't don't ever complain about the spotlight when that
- 21:59Speaker 3: same spotlight has given you or afforded you opportunities that
- 22:02Speaker 3: you otherwise wouldn't have, whether it's you know, eating at
- 22:05Speaker 3: specific restaurants or doing these cool experiences, or being able
- 22:08Speaker 3: to go to the White House or whatever that is.
- 22:10Speaker 3: If I was playing for some other team, maybe that
- 22:13Speaker 3: doesn't happen if it's not New York, you know, and
- 22:16Speaker 3: if you're not the quarterback, maybe that doesn't happen to
- 22:18Speaker 3: you in that specific you know example. So you know,
- 22:22Speaker 3: you can't complain about it if you get something from
- 22:25Speaker 3: it and do your best to you know, try and
- 22:28Speaker 3: remain humble. And the thing I've found that brought me
- 22:31Speaker 3: a lot of joy when you're in those scenarios of
- 22:35Speaker 3: being the guy or in the spotlight, is when you
- 22:38Speaker 3: bring your teammates or your family, right, like you get
- 22:41Speaker 3: you get hooked up for Broadway tickets and you get
- 22:43Speaker 3: to go to the premieres, or you get to go
- 22:44Speaker 3: to the premiers of all these cool movies that you
- 22:47Speaker 3: know in New York City. Well, yeah, I'd love to go,
- 22:50Speaker 3: and I understand you only have two tickets, but I
- 22:52Speaker 3: got to bring at least two or three of the
- 22:53Speaker 3: old linemen and their wives. So yeah, if we're coming,
- 22:56Speaker 3: we're coming as a group, but you know whatever, And
- 22:58Speaker 3: they'd always come back and say, yeah, okay, you're all coming.
- 23:01Speaker 3: So the guys would walk the red carpet with their
- 23:03Speaker 3: wives and then you know, on the other end, it
- 23:06Speaker 3: gives you a free night out with the boys later on. Yeah,
- 23:08Speaker 3: the wife they were happy they got to see a
- 23:09Speaker 3: Bronx show, you know, and then the guys can hang
- 23:12Speaker 3: one night. So but I think it's I think it's
- 23:14Speaker 3: important to bring the people either that helped you get
- 23:16Speaker 3: there along with you, or you know, the people you're
- 23:19Speaker 3: sharing that spotlight with, to make sure you deflect some
- 23:21Speaker 3: of it and make sure they get some love to.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I think you've always come off. Marc is one of
- 23:25Speaker 1: those guys, is like like you said, you are in
- 23:27Speaker 1: the spotlight. You every You've been in every large market
- 23:30Speaker 1: that's possible, like you've grown up in it.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Yeah. This is like when I started bouncing around.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Yeah, Chicago, yeah, d C. All huge market and I
- 23:41Speaker 1: just built it like like where's all the people? Where
- 23:46Speaker 1: the people at? And I played and I'm the only
- 23:48Speaker 1: one up here that played in small markets like you
- 23:50Speaker 1: played in Chicago, huge market.
- 23:52Speaker 3: That's huge.
- 23:52Speaker 1: But I didn't have the spotlight like that.
- 23:54Speaker 3: I know you're pretty big.
- 23:57Speaker 1: With all that being said, though, yeah, because you can
- 24:00Speaker 1: kind did a lot for the game people.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and every time I might punch the ball out,
- 24:03Speaker 2: they mentioned your name very much.
- 24:08Speaker 1: They mentioned your name all the time. So, uh, the
- 24:11Speaker 1: way you handled all that though, your humility, the ability
- 24:14Speaker 1: to be able to you know, take the spotlight and
- 24:16Speaker 1: then push it out on everybody else. I think that's
- 24:18Speaker 1: a talent and a lot of quarterbacks maybe they don't
- 24:22Speaker 1: understand that, or just people in general, what it's like
- 24:26Speaker 1: to be, you know, with all the pressure that comes
- 24:28Speaker 1: with being the quarterback, the responsibility as well.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Oh it's uh, it's a lot of pressure. But that's
- 24:35Speaker 3: once again, like you sign up from that or for
- 24:38Speaker 3: that from the jump, the good, the bad, the ugly,
- 24:40Speaker 3: everything in between, and looking back, it's like, you know,
- 24:44Speaker 3: what would I change? What would I try and do different?
- 24:46Speaker 3: How have I grown from all this stuff? I think
- 24:48Speaker 3: one of the biggest things is I just didn't really
- 24:50Speaker 3: face true adversity publicly like that until I got to
- 24:55Speaker 3: the NFL. Right because I'm I'm getting good grades in school,
- 24:58Speaker 3: I'm homecoming king, you know, I got a scholarship to USC.
- 25:01Speaker 3: I'm going to be the quarterback at SC. I play
- 25:03Speaker 3: at SC, we win the Rose Bowl, I'm an MVP.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Boom.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Now you're in the NFL, and it's just like, oh man,
- 25:08Speaker 3: this is just awesome. Yeah, well, you know, go win
- 25:12Speaker 3: win eight games and missed the playoffs in New York
- 25:14Speaker 3: and then you're like, whoa, this isn't the real world. Wow, yeah,
- 25:19Speaker 3: what happened whereever he go? How did what happened to
- 25:22Speaker 3: all the fun stuff? Nobody's smiling anymore. People are pissed,
- 25:25Speaker 3: you know, and you learn a lot about life and
- 25:30Speaker 3: people and a little bit of adversity, and then you
- 25:32Speaker 3: have to adjust. Okay, well now what you know? And
- 25:35Speaker 3: so those are now that I'm a dad, I got
- 25:37Speaker 3: a boy who's going to be seven, Those are like
- 25:39Speaker 3: valuable lessons And I'm trying to import on him about dude,
- 25:43Speaker 3: you're gonna have so many advantages growing up, you know.
- 25:46Speaker 3: And we used to say this in travel basketball. But
- 25:49Speaker 3: my dad's like, ah, we're thinking about adding this kid
- 25:52Speaker 3: to the team. But he's a three car garage kid,
- 25:56Speaker 3: meaning like, is he really gonna grind? Yeah, a scrap
- 26:00Speaker 3: for a loose ball? Is he gonna dive? Is he
- 26:02Speaker 3: like you know, does he get a cramp and come
- 26:04Speaker 3: out like and it was a thing, and so that
- 26:08Speaker 3: is you know, now that I know some of the
- 26:11Speaker 3: drawbacks of all those things going your way from the
- 26:14Speaker 3: jump and becoming this star in New York or whatever. Well, okay,
- 26:19Speaker 3: what are my fears for the next one coming up?
- 26:22Speaker 2: Right?
- 26:22Speaker 3: Like for my son, I'm like, oh, shoot, dude, we
- 26:24Speaker 3: wake up and we're looking at the ocean. Come on, dog,
- 26:26Speaker 3: this is bad. We need to go get an apartment
- 26:28Speaker 3: like somewhere else.
- 26:29Speaker 2: How's he going grind?
- 26:30Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 26:30Speaker 3: Like, how do I teach him? Like this stuff doesn't
- 26:32Speaker 3: just happen? Like me and Grandpa and your uncles were
- 26:35Speaker 3: outside all the time throwing the football fielding ground balls,
- 26:40Speaker 3: shooting layups. I mean we went to Chargers camp the
- 26:43Speaker 3: other day. I almost had this crazy flashback because I
- 26:46Speaker 3: remember at Coasta Mesa High school where they practice, they
- 26:49Speaker 3: did their joint practice or whatever. At Jack Hammett whatever,
- 26:53Speaker 3: well that gym there, Dude. I almost had like a
- 26:55Speaker 3: full on flashback because I remember my dad was gone.
- 26:58Speaker 3: He was doing something as a firefighter. My brother took
- 27:00Speaker 3: me to that basketball tournament in that gym in the
- 27:03Speaker 3: parking lot next to where they're practicing, so I see
- 27:05Speaker 3: the mustangs on the wall whatever, and I was like,
- 27:07Speaker 3: oh my god, I remember this place, dude. My brother
- 27:10Speaker 3: kept me after the game because I missed two breakaway
- 27:14Speaker 3: layups in our game and we lost by like a
- 27:16Speaker 3: point or something. Dude. We went up and down the
- 27:18Speaker 3: court and he would just launch the ball all the
- 27:21Speaker 3: way down so I could run by myself. After the
- 27:23Speaker 3: gym had cleared out for like two hours, I must
- 27:25Speaker 3: have shot three hundred freaking breakaway layups and I was gassed.
- 27:29Speaker 3: But it was like just a reminder of like, dang, grin,
- 27:32Speaker 3: that's where it is. That's that's where it really starts.
- 27:35Speaker 3: That's where that's who you really are. If you commit
- 27:38Speaker 3: to it and then the rest you know, you do
- 27:40Speaker 3: your best.
- 27:40Speaker 2: We're going to take a short break and we'll be
- 27:42Speaker 2: back in a minute. All right, tell me about this.
- 27:46Speaker 2: All right?
- 27:46Speaker 1: So number one, when did you know it was time
- 27:49Speaker 1: to retire? And number two, let's talk about that transition afterwards.
- 27:54Speaker 1: You know you really didn't take any time off. Yeah,
- 27:56Speaker 1: you went straight into doing TV and now you're doing
- 27:59Speaker 1: the broadcasting And let's let's kind of dive it out
- 28:02Speaker 1: because we worked with some of the same people.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Yeah, on the broadcasting side.
- 28:06Speaker 3: So I think after Washington it was pretty hectic. Things
- 28:11Speaker 3: were getting hectic at home my son and you know,
- 28:15Speaker 3: my son's mom and I co parent him. So if
- 28:16Speaker 3: I'm going to be gone, uh, you know most of
- 28:19Speaker 3: the year, like when am I going to see him?
- 28:21Speaker 3: What does this next chapter of life look like? And
- 28:25Speaker 3: it was It was just the right time. So, yeah,
- 28:28Speaker 3: am I going to try and grind this out one
- 28:30Speaker 3: more year with all this other stuff on my mind?
- 28:32Speaker 3: Like I'm doing a disservice to the team I'm trying
- 28:36Speaker 3: to make and maybe to myself. Let's roll, let's let's
- 28:40Speaker 3: pack up and figure this thing out. This next chapter.
- 28:42Speaker 3: I got a lot of stuff too, so you were ready.
- 28:44Speaker 2: I was.
- 28:44Speaker 1: I was ready.
- 28:45Speaker 3: I knew I was really going to miss it, but
- 28:47Speaker 3: I was ready, and I think at any point I
- 28:49Speaker 3: was really going to miss it, so I don't think
- 28:51Speaker 3: anything would have changed there. And then it was like, okay,
- 28:55Speaker 3: now what I can't just be in my opinion, I
- 28:59Speaker 3: didn't feel comble with nothing to do for my son
- 29:05Speaker 3: to see, you know what I mean, like I didn't
- 29:07Speaker 3: want him to see it at that time, he was
- 29:09Speaker 3: like three years old, but I didn't want him to see.
- 29:12Speaker 3: You know, my dad used to play football. He made
- 29:14Speaker 3: a bunch of money. And now we just kind of
- 29:15Speaker 3: hang out like I don't know, and there's nothing wrong
- 29:18Speaker 3: with that. Is that is totally fine. It just was like,
- 29:22Speaker 3: I mean, maybe I don't have to put on a
- 29:23Speaker 3: suit and tie every day, but i'd like to be
- 29:25Speaker 3: doing something. I'd like him see me going to work,
- 29:28Speaker 3: whether it was consulting or real estate or something. And
- 29:32Speaker 3: I couldn't really be coaching, although I'd love to coach.
- 29:35Speaker 3: I was like, that's just going to go way too far,
- 29:37Speaker 3: and I know, like I'll go full send on coaching
- 29:40Speaker 3: and then yeah, exactly, so I'm like I might as
- 29:43Speaker 3: well try and play again. Those are two of the
- 29:45Speaker 3: same things. So I was like, all right, let's try
- 29:48Speaker 3: this broadcasting boot camp. Tracy Peerlman, Jerry Maddalon, a lot
- 29:52Speaker 3: of people help get that set up, and that was
- 29:55Speaker 3: really eye opening for me on what some opportunities could be.
- 29:59Speaker 3: And so we go through the broadcasting boot camp, which
- 30:01Speaker 3: I highly encourage players. I wish I had done it
- 30:05Speaker 3: my third year in the league, you know, like that
- 30:08Speaker 3: really breaks my heart that I didn't do that, and
- 30:10Speaker 3: I hope the players if you have any interest in
- 30:12Speaker 3: any of those boot camps, like public Service Announcement, I
- 30:16Speaker 3: highly recommend going to one of those. It's free, they
- 30:20Speaker 3: hook up your travel, You learn so much, you meet
- 30:22Speaker 3: all the people you're gonna meet anyway that are important
- 30:25Speaker 3: to know for your next endeavor if you choose that forum.
- 30:29Speaker 3: So important, but they basically tape everything that you do there.
- 30:32Speaker 3: They send out all your essentially like your demos. And
- 30:36Speaker 3: and then we got calls from ESPN. I had to
- 30:38Speaker 3: go audition for them, and ABC jumped in that role
- 30:41Speaker 3: with Jonathan Vilma. The last time I had talked to
- 30:44Speaker 3: Jonathan Vilma was my rookie year. We played you Guys
- 30:48Speaker 3: Game four in New Orleans.
- 30:51Speaker 1: I get picked off by House. It gets better because
- 31:00Speaker 1: he got the pedal, dude.
- 31:02Speaker 3: And finally so Sharp's too far ahead or he's behind me,
- 31:06Speaker 3: and I'm trying to like create a pile. You're taught
- 31:08Speaker 3: just create a pile, right, So I kind of just
- 31:10Speaker 3: dive near Vilma.
- 31:11Speaker 2: He chopped.
- 31:12Speaker 3: In hindsight, it's a little bit too violent. It should
- 31:15Speaker 3: have been more of like a tuck and roll, and
- 31:18Speaker 3: it was a little more like direct at Vilma. You know,
- 31:22Speaker 3: he's horizontal, he's pissed whatever. And then I get fined.
- 31:26Speaker 3: And then the next time I talked to him was
- 31:28Speaker 3: to call him and tell him, Hey, I got the job.
- 31:29Speaker 3: I'm sitting next to you on the desk at College
- 31:31Speaker 3: Football ABC. So I was like, bro, I'm sorry, should
- 31:35Speaker 3: we just talk about this now? He's like, hell, yeah,
- 31:37Speaker 3: we're gonna talk about it. So Vilma, I thought he
- 31:40Speaker 3: was gonna whoop my ass the first day in the studio.
- 31:42Speaker 3: He didn't, thankfully, and he's been a great dude to
- 31:45Speaker 3: me and just helped me a ton with just like
- 31:48Speaker 3: in football, like you you look at the older guys
- 31:51Speaker 3: on the team, if that's on the team, they're like
- 31:52Speaker 3: your big brothers. It's the same thing in television media whatever.
- 31:56Speaker 3: Like Kevin M. Gandhi and Jonathan Vilma were so by
- 32:05Speaker 3: the end of my time there at sc or at
- 32:09Speaker 3: at Sports Center or ESPN for two years, I was
- 32:12Speaker 3: staying in the Gandhi's house in the basement. And his
- 32:16Speaker 3: kids are like crazy Philly fans just like him. So
- 32:19Speaker 3: all they wanted to talk about is, uh, Brent seleck
- 32:22Speaker 3: zach Ertz, Leashan McCoy, you know, tell me about playing
- 32:24Speaker 3: with this guy, tell me about playing this guy. So
- 32:26Speaker 3: we'd be playing like knee football and knee basketball in
- 32:29Speaker 3: the basement with his little kids. And that's how close
- 32:31Speaker 3: we became. Same thing we mentioned with football, when a
- 32:34Speaker 3: broadcast or a crew becomes more than just a job
- 32:37Speaker 3: and it's like your family. We had some great shows
- 32:40Speaker 3: with the IT.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Shows on TV because I I leaned on Vilma so
- 32:45Speaker 1: much when I was first starting to get into it.
- 32:46Speaker 1: He's just he's honest. He's brutally honest. Sometimes he's not
- 32:50Speaker 1: that nice of a person. He's a great guy, but
- 32:52Speaker 1: he's but you want his opinion. Yeah, you respect people
- 32:56Speaker 1: say yeah, hey, you're doing great, You're doing great, and
- 32:58Speaker 1: you don't get honest feet that difference between but that's
- 33:03Speaker 1: the difference between you or us as athletes and professionals.
- 33:06Speaker 1: When you make it to the highest level.
- 33:08Speaker 3: You're extracting critique.
- 33:10Speaker 1: One criticism, and I think that's what makes us who
- 33:13Speaker 1: we are as people. Right when you go to the
- 33:16Speaker 1: real world and a regular I guess, a regular job,
- 33:19Speaker 1: you want people just to tell you how good you are,
- 33:22Speaker 1: like a yes man or yes woman or whatever.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Like it just doesn't make.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Dude, you can't say that, yes, we got to get better.
- 33:29Speaker 1: I'm going to grow. I'm a plus minus guy. I'm
- 33:32Speaker 1: everything in my life and I can move on everything
- 33:36Speaker 1: I want just plus minu. So I guess I am.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I try to do the boot camp. I tried it
- 33:42Speaker 1: twice and they like was like, no, we're not We're
- 33:44Speaker 1: not taking your application. I don't know if my my home's.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Answer.
- 33:50Speaker 2: I was just like I did the broadcast boot camp.
- 33:52Speaker 1: I thought it was a big thumbs up, two thumbs twice,
- 33:56Speaker 1: and they were like, no, maybe I didn't beg enough
- 33:59Speaker 1: because you said that I did. I did, application was
- 34:02Speaker 1: late and then I just wrote like a really nice
- 34:05Speaker 1: little personal thing at the end.
- 34:06Speaker 2: They let me in last one in and they let me.
- 34:09Speaker 2: They said it was full.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Then I wrote another followback email and it worked out anyways,
- 34:13Speaker 1: and then next you know, I'm doing what I'm doing now.
- 34:15Speaker 1: And uh, it's it's funny though, Mark, Cuz because you
- 34:18Speaker 1: went right into it. Yeah, Peanut went right into it.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Me, I took a whole year off.
- 34:24Speaker 1: I took three hundred and sixty five days and said
- 34:26Speaker 1: I'm not going to do anything, just really decompress and
- 34:29Speaker 1: then I figure out, trust me, what I want to do.
- 34:32Speaker 2: My situation was different.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 34:34Speaker 1: And you got your job pretty quick though, right They
- 34:37Speaker 1: offered you like right away.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Well I did have to go interview or audition, yes,
- 34:41Speaker 3: at ESPN. But that's kind of why it happened so fast,
- 34:45Speaker 3: right because of the demos that went out from boot camp.
- 34:48Speaker 3: It was like, okay, you have a couple of different
- 34:50Speaker 3: options here. You can do USC radio, you can do
- 34:52Speaker 3: blah blah blah. So I was like, oh, shoot, okay,
- 34:55Speaker 3: we're starting like this fall then this.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Is this is real, okay, And I don't think everybody
- 35:00Speaker 1: understand it's not just like, oh you're good, you get
- 35:02Speaker 1: to get hired like you can be good and not
- 35:03Speaker 1: get a hired.
- 35:04Speaker 2: It's all about hiring cycles.
- 35:06Speaker 1: It's timing. It's it's just like playing Tom Brady. Oh
- 35:11Speaker 1: we're signing him.
- 35:12Speaker 3: And that and those names, those on field accolades will
- 35:17Speaker 3: get you in the door. But if you don't study,
- 35:20Speaker 3: you're not keeping current with the game, if you're not
- 35:22Speaker 3: talking to coaches and players and all that and you know,
- 35:24Speaker 3: fine tuning your skills, you get passed by, right like
- 35:28Speaker 3: the next new sexy guy. Who's hey, man, this guy.
- 35:31Speaker 2: You know, when I retired, I literally did the same.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Literally, it happened just like you had a had a
- 35:38Speaker 1: media agent with CIA and well, I'm thinking about it maybe,
- 35:42Speaker 1: and then I retired and then I was here interviewing
- 35:45Speaker 1: for Fox Sports, and I did the interview and was like.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Oh, okay, I guess I'm doing this.
- 35:50Speaker 1: And then two weeks later it's like, yeah, they want you,
- 35:53Speaker 1: they want you to do and I was a choice,
- 35:57Speaker 1: damn okay, this is And that was how I got
- 36:00Speaker 1: into doing that.
- 36:01Speaker 3: You know, at that point, you can't be like, all right,
- 36:02Speaker 3: give me one year.
- 36:03Speaker 2: No you can't.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Mine was just kind of he's totally different than
- 36:10Speaker 1: everybody else out there. It was the six seven six rings.
- 36:14Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 36:14Speaker 1: They got him out here in the walls at the
- 36:16Speaker 1: NFL studios. Have you seen Tom Brady on the wall.
- 36:18Speaker 3: He looks like a Game of Thrones, like a yes,
- 36:21Speaker 3: iron man see it.
- 36:23Speaker 1: I'm just I mean, he was in Tampa Bay though,
- 36:25Speaker 1: That's my only thing. I mean that he wanted to see.
- 36:29Speaker 3: The most. It's recency biased. You know what have you
- 36:32Speaker 3: done for me lately?
- 36:33Speaker 2: I'm with that. I can I can respect that. I
- 36:35Speaker 2: can respect that. I just I just was thrown off.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I was listening to you talking about Kevin Na Gandhi too,
- 36:40Speaker 1: and maybe you give everybody else some advice that want
- 36:43Speaker 1: to get into the broadcasting or the analysts work. And
- 36:46Speaker 1: you said, the thing that really helped you with the Gandhi,
- 36:48Speaker 1: how he just took you on his wing, was that,
- 36:50Speaker 1: you know, He's like, look, don't focus on anything else.
- 36:53Speaker 1: You just deliver what you know, the knowledge that you
- 36:56Speaker 1: know being a quarterback, the eyes in which you see
- 36:58Speaker 1: the football game, the game through is what we want
- 37:02Speaker 1: to see and be able to break that down for
- 37:03Speaker 1: people's like I'm just going to ask you football questions.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Exactly, and you just give me a football answers that's it, yeah,
- 37:09Speaker 3: and like just stay in that lane, funny, and you
- 37:12Speaker 3: will shine in this business. And it's so true. And
- 37:14Speaker 3: then along the way you're gonna learn different skills and
- 37:18Speaker 3: they seem kind of silly, but like, how long is
- 37:21Speaker 3: a thirty second answer?
- 37:22Speaker 2: I agree?
- 37:23Speaker 3: How long is a minute? How long is a minute
- 37:25Speaker 3: and a half? How long is a five minute debate
- 37:27Speaker 3: with four panelists three panelists, Like, so until you're in
- 37:30Speaker 3: those situations, you're not going to know. But the biggest
- 37:33Speaker 3: thing to try and understand early is like this economy
- 37:36Speaker 3: of words. How can you say you know without talking
- 37:39Speaker 3: over people? And if you drop a little terminology, be
- 37:43Speaker 3: ready to explain it quickly, like how can you get
- 37:48Speaker 3: your message across and articulate your point? And Kevin was
- 37:51Speaker 3: so good with that because during the breaks sometimes we'd
- 37:55Speaker 3: be doing rap shows, so basically we're talking over highlights yep,
- 37:58Speaker 3: and you know, oh, I could see like whoa, the
- 38:01Speaker 3: left tackles way or bam that that running back has
- 38:04Speaker 3: to block that guy or whatever. He goes great, I'm
- 38:06Speaker 3: coming to you. You go with this film, good with
- 38:09Speaker 3: this one, bam. And so he would set us up
- 38:11Speaker 3: like a point guard all the time with like just
- 38:13Speaker 3: a nasty pass boom we're.
- 38:15Speaker 1: In exactly, yeah, and could not miss.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Your brother helped you out, mother helped you out exactly.
- 38:23Speaker 3: So he was he was great. But I mean the
- 38:26Speaker 3: sooner you get those reps and that's really what it
- 38:29Speaker 3: comes down to.
- 38:31Speaker 1: We that's what you learn at the local Well, that's
- 38:33Speaker 1: what you learned at broadcast boots, dude, Like, that's what
- 38:36Speaker 1: you learn. It's so I want to hear. Just give
- 38:39Speaker 1: me a quick thirty second story on something you did
- 38:43Speaker 1: at the broadcast bout camp where you just trash or
- 38:46Speaker 1: no or not. Have you ever just fill flat on
- 38:50Speaker 1: your face live TV? Yeah, I mean give me give
- 38:54Speaker 1: me one of them stories as a player.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Second that as a player, as a as an analyst.
- 38:59Speaker 3: Be in there. Let's see as an analyst.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Golly, it is something you were just like, man, that's
- 39:05Speaker 1: live TV. I totally messed that up. I've been there,
- 39:08Speaker 1: oh a million, I mean, oh my god, a million
- 39:12Speaker 1: times where you just kind of blank. I've watched my
- 39:15Speaker 1: prior broadcast before and you're kind of like your point
- 39:17Speaker 1: just kind of it's like dangling thing and you're I'm like,
- 39:21Speaker 1: who are you talking? And sometimes I find myself saying
- 39:25Speaker 1: stuff like that. I hear my dad saying to me,
- 39:31Speaker 1: you know, like like we're watching in warm ups or
- 39:34Speaker 1: something like that, and I'm glad it didn't make the broadcast.
- 39:36Speaker 1: But like you see guys throwing the ball and it's
- 39:38Speaker 1: like routes on air. They're basically playing catch, and you
- 39:41Speaker 1: see him like drop three in a row or miss
- 39:42Speaker 1: three in a row. You're just like, what do we
- 39:44Speaker 1: call this game? Catch or chase? What are we doing here? Yeah?
- 39:47Speaker 3: You know, so I'll say stuff like that or you know,
- 39:50Speaker 3: my dad.
- 39:51Speaker 2: You didn't even know you were listening to.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, and it was so weird. But he
- 39:55Speaker 3: would say, you know, he dropped him like a bad habit,
- 39:59Speaker 3: or he dropped him like a that transmission, or you know,
- 40:02Speaker 3: he just have these weird sayings. And I've set him
- 40:04Speaker 3: on air before and I immediately like hit the talkback
- 40:07Speaker 3: button to mute myself and I'm like, you idiot, and
- 40:10Speaker 3: my producers like, I love it. I love it. You
- 40:12Speaker 3: sound like you're seventy years old. I'm like, great, thanks,
- 40:16Speaker 3: I'm trying to remember. I talked about Kirk Cousins one time,
- 40:20Speaker 3: and similar to Aaron Rodgers I think this Quarterback show
- 40:23Speaker 3: that he's been on has really helped his BRANDI.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Yeah, because everybody thinks he's beyond boring, yes, and he's not.
- 40:30Speaker 3: He's like pretty funny and interesting dude, but he's he's
- 40:34Speaker 3: super nerdy owns. Yeah, but it's him, But it's him,
- 40:38Speaker 3: it's him. And then on the field, he's like a
- 40:40Speaker 3: stone cold killer dog, like he wants to win just
- 40:42Speaker 3: like everybody else, if not more. Well, I made a
- 40:46Speaker 3: comment because he got all out pressure. They had a
- 40:48Speaker 3: little tight end, shallow cross and he flips it across
- 40:51Speaker 3: his body all the way to the opposite sideline, gets
- 40:55Speaker 3: his completion, first down, crucial first down, and they end
- 40:57Speaker 3: up kicking a field goal to win against Seattle. A
- 41:00Speaker 3: couple of years ago in Minnesota. One of my games
- 41:02Speaker 3: for for Minnesota on Fox, Well, I said, listen, say
- 41:07Speaker 3: what you want about Kirk Cousins. He might call his
- 41:10Speaker 3: pants trousers. He might wear those said trousers up to
- 41:13Speaker 3: his navel. I don't care. He's a stone cold killer.
- 41:16Speaker 3: And those are the kind of third down plays against
- 41:18Speaker 3: pressure in the red zone you have to execute if
- 41:21Speaker 3: you're going to fill at a defense. And that's what
- 41:23Speaker 3: he just did and that was like one of my
- 41:25Speaker 3: favorite things that you gotta be cool with Kirk, Like
- 41:31Speaker 3: you can't pay him out to be a nerd. I'm like, guy,
- 41:33Speaker 3: he is, he is a nerd.
- 41:35Speaker 2: He is like that.
- 41:37Speaker 1: It's funny like that because like players recognize it, right,
- 41:43Speaker 1: we know. And it's the same way with like Russell Wilson.
- 41:46Speaker 1: You never had anybody say how great or how cool
- 41:48Speaker 1: he is.
- 41:49Speaker 2: He's a great player, great player. He's so cool.
- 41:51Speaker 1: He's he comes across to every other player. We're like, dude,
- 41:56Speaker 1: I mean that guy, he's that guy he is.
- 41:58Speaker 2: It's okay, you like everybody.
- 42:01Speaker 1: That's the best thing about the locker room is like
- 42:03Speaker 1: nobody really wants you to be anybody but yourself, but
- 42:06Speaker 1: be yourself.
- 42:06Speaker 3: And it's open game.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Everything's fair. Yeah, it's like everything fair.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Every there's yeah everything.
- 42:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:15Speaker 1: I was going to tell some stories, but I think
- 42:17Speaker 1: we'll do that off family.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I won't stop crying, you know. I cried as soon
- 42:23Speaker 1: as I laught having a good podcast. Every every time,
- 42:27Speaker 1: every time I cry, like crist.
- 42:31Speaker 3: It's the thing.
- 42:32Speaker 2: So this is what this is our second year doing
- 42:35Speaker 2: the show. I think we're heading like we're rolling.
- 42:38Speaker 1: In, ascending into our second years, and our goal is
- 42:41Speaker 1: to get this thing be national. We're trying to kill
- 42:45Speaker 1: it right now. We're trying to you know, wear our
- 42:47Speaker 1: trousers up to our navels or whatever. They focus and
- 42:50Speaker 1: we're just super laser focused. You've been in the broadcast business.
- 42:54Speaker 1: What are some of your goals as a broadcaster? How
- 42:57Speaker 1: far are you trying to go? Where are you trying
- 42:58Speaker 1: to take this?
- 42:59Speaker 2: You're trying to.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Emmy's Tony's listen. I think that stuff would happen on
- 43:05Speaker 3: its own. I think these first two years have been
- 43:08Speaker 3: a great foundation for me. This is a third year,
- 43:12Speaker 3: contract year, you know, so contract year. Yeah, yeah, we go, so,
- 43:17Speaker 3: you know, I feel like I'm really coming into my own.
- 43:20Speaker 3: I feel like I was my first year. I felt
- 43:23Speaker 3: like I was treading water a little bit, like any
- 43:25Speaker 3: rookie at anything.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 43:27Speaker 3: And the next year, which was this past year, once
- 43:31Speaker 3: Kevin Coogler and I my partner, and Laura Oakman, who
- 43:34Speaker 3: both of them I love to death. They we were
- 43:37Speaker 3: in London and we call this awesome game the first round,
- 43:42Speaker 3: and we get to stay for like sixteen days in
- 43:44Speaker 3: London and do the second game because Fox took those
- 43:46Speaker 3: games last year, both really good games. One of them
- 43:49Speaker 3: was a Saints and it was we finally like clicked,
- 43:54Speaker 3: me and keV. At least I felt it totally click.
- 43:57Speaker 3: And keV was a little tight before because this was
- 44:00Speaker 3: to be the biggest broadcast he'd ever been on. I
- 44:02Speaker 3: was definitely nervous, but I've also walked out on the
- 44:04Speaker 3: field in the Coliseum and the Rose Bowl and Anti
- 44:06Speaker 3: Championship game. I'm like, dude, spotlight, Yeah, I'm scared, but
- 44:09Speaker 3: this is gonna be awesome because somebody's getting their ask
- 44:11Speaker 3: kicked in it amy. You know, let's roll, you know,
- 44:13Speaker 3: you just get into that mode of whatever, right, And
- 44:16Speaker 3: so I start massaging Kevin's shoulders like I'm his cut
- 44:20Speaker 3: man in boxing. I'm like, let's go champ. We read
- 44:23Speaker 3: a champ. We don't feed it to him today, you know.
- 44:25Speaker 3: And I'm just messing with him and trying to loosen
- 44:28Speaker 3: him up. And he has this awesome call and after
- 44:30Speaker 3: the game, I just gave him a huge hug. I'm like, dude,
- 44:32Speaker 3: you freaking nailed it. You freaking nailed it. I knew
- 44:34Speaker 3: you were super nervous, but you nail this dog. We
- 44:37Speaker 3: got this like, let's roll. We're not looking back anymore.
- 44:39Speaker 3: We've kind of hit our stride here, let's go. And
- 44:41Speaker 3: so ever since then, which was about October of the
- 44:45Speaker 3: last season, I felt like we're on this great trajectory together.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Now after this year, who knows what's gonna happen, but
- 44:51Speaker 3: it just feels like, hey, let's just keep stacking them,
- 44:53Speaker 3: just keep adding another one to the can. As soon
- 44:56Speaker 3: as we put in the can after the game, I
- 44:58Speaker 3: want a fist bump. We do our quick rap up,
- 45:00Speaker 3: and then like boom, let's get onto the next week.
- 45:02Speaker 3: Let's do it again. I want to be, you know,
- 45:04Speaker 3: get better each time. Tell me when I'm off, I'll
- 45:06Speaker 3: tell you when you're off. And so we have such
- 45:09Speaker 3: a good rapport now it's like, let's see how far
- 45:11Speaker 3: we can take it. You know, I'll go as long
- 45:13Speaker 3: as they do, you know, as long as they'll let
- 45:15Speaker 3: me hang around. I'm ready.
- 45:16Speaker 2: I love that.
- 45:17Speaker 1: I love that attitude. The podcast that you do with
- 45:19Speaker 1: Nick Mangle, I love it. First of all, the name
- 45:23Speaker 1: I'm sold in exchange.
- 45:25Speaker 3: The name is important. Who came up with the name, Yeah,
- 45:27Speaker 3: I think it was me. That was somebody at the Jets.
- 45:29Speaker 3: I think it was Matt Sikoff beautiful doun.
- 45:31Speaker 1: It's the most important thing element of the game that
- 45:34Speaker 1: nobody talks about.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Yeah, the Centaert to quarterback extreme.
- 45:37Speaker 3: I mean it starts the whole play. Nothing happens till
- 45:40Speaker 3: the quarterback says go and the center's got to give
- 45:42Speaker 3: a great sound.
- 45:42Speaker 1: You know, doesn't his sister play center? No, No, she's
- 45:46Speaker 1: a weightlifter, she's Olympian.
- 45:52Speaker 2: She was like sports.
- 45:53Speaker 1: I knew, I knew she played sports strong as hell. Yeah, sorry, man,
- 45:57Speaker 1: just throw it out.
- 45:57Speaker 2: There, bro. So it may be the stick.
- 45:59Speaker 1: It's over the same thing with the Hillary, the same
- 46:01Speaker 1: thing with the Hillary comment earlier.
- 46:03Speaker 2: It's just like.
- 46:06Speaker 3: Now starting.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Pen tillman, throw it out there.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Just whatever, let's try it has has that element up
- 46:15Speaker 1: your game and other parts? Yeah, I think of your
- 46:17Speaker 1: game like, what is a podcast? How does that help
- 46:20Speaker 1: elevate your game?
- 46:21Speaker 3: It's interesting. So you have so much time to really
- 46:23Speaker 3: expand and tell these stories on podcasts, and that's one
- 46:27Speaker 3: of the things you learn at broadcasting boot camp. But
- 46:30Speaker 3: story sell people want to hear the stories. You know,
- 46:34Speaker 3: we're going up to do Gino Smith his first game.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Well, that's gonna be awesome.
- 46:38Speaker 3: Yeah, how about his rams at Gino? But it's like, Okay,
- 46:41Speaker 3: Geno was the comeback player of the Okay, why tell
- 46:44Speaker 3: me why. Everybody's going to say he's the comeback player
- 46:46Speaker 3: of the year, but why So that's been like my
- 46:48Speaker 3: off season project a little bit. As soon as we
- 46:50Speaker 3: got this game is okay, I need to go find
- 46:52Speaker 3: some specific plays of why and where I've seen him
- 46:55Speaker 3: improve whatever well with with Nick on that show. That's
- 46:59Speaker 3: what it becomes. You try and like fine tune your
- 47:01Speaker 3: skills for that forum and one of the other you know, uh,
- 47:06Speaker 3: we're giving away all the broadcasting boot camp secrets, but
- 47:08Speaker 3: understanding the forum, who's the audience, where are you, what's
- 47:12Speaker 3: the setting, like who are you, who are you with?
- 47:14Speaker 3: And then who's watching, who's listening? Are they watching it all?
- 47:17Speaker 3: You know what I mean? And so those kind of
- 47:20Speaker 3: things help me stay sharp for when I do studio
- 47:23Speaker 3: with Fox or call a game, because that's very, very different.
- 47:27Speaker 3: When you go do speak for yourself or speak now
- 47:29Speaker 3: at Fox with Emmanuel Otto, that's different than sitting down
- 47:33Speaker 3: with Colin Coward and just a totally different show, a
- 47:36Speaker 3: totally different audience, and so you got to be ready
- 47:39Speaker 3: to go, Like, I've never been as nervous as I
- 47:41Speaker 3: am walking up to the speak set because Marcella's you know,
- 47:45Speaker 3: joy Ocho. I need a couple extra like on my
- 47:51Speaker 3: belt loop, you know what I mean, Like I need
- 47:53Speaker 3: a couple extra points just in case I get into
- 47:55Speaker 3: back and forth.
- 47:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:56Speaker 3: Well, for Colin Coward, it's okay, tell me a great
- 47:59Speaker 3: story about this, tell me your experience about this. How
- 48:01Speaker 3: can you relate to that player that I'm asking you
- 48:04Speaker 3: about whatever? With Mangold, we're just hanging talking to these
- 48:07Speaker 3: people that love the Jets, and so okay, this is
- 48:10Speaker 3: a little more softball than a lot of stuff. We're
- 48:12Speaker 3: not breaking new you know, we're not trying to get
- 48:14Speaker 3: gotcha on the podcast like ha, you said it on
- 48:17Speaker 3: ours and we got all the news. Now, that's not
- 48:19Speaker 3: really our vibe there, you know. So I think a
- 48:21Speaker 3: lot of it's being able to be versatile once again.
- 48:25Speaker 3: Na Gandhi. He does Little League World Series, he does
- 48:27Speaker 3: Sports Center, he does Saturday College Football, He you know,
- 48:30Speaker 3: hosts different shows for them, award shows, all that. He
- 48:33Speaker 3: can do it all, Like I want to be able
- 48:35Speaker 3: to do it all a lot for you know, whatever
- 48:38Speaker 3: company wants to hire me, and it just gives you
- 48:40Speaker 3: more opportunities, the more you can do.
- 48:42Speaker 2: No, I love that, and all right, so now to
- 48:44Speaker 2: the funny stuff.
- 48:46Speaker 1: All right, Oh boy, number one, what was the most
- 48:49Speaker 1: outrageous purchase you had when you got to the league,
- 48:53Speaker 1: And don't tell me about no abought my mama house.
- 48:55Speaker 2: I don't want to hear about it.
- 48:56Speaker 3: Give me, give me somebody, Okay. Remember this is why
- 49:01Speaker 3: my wife now hates when I buy stuff on Instagram
- 49:04Speaker 3: because I'm a complete sucker for those stupid ads that
- 49:07Speaker 3: come up on it.
- 49:07Speaker 1: They pop up a lot more now too, Coach in
- 49:10Speaker 1: the moment, Oh.
- 49:12Speaker 3: Dude, I'm all over them. So before that, for this
- 49:16Speaker 3: younger generation, there was a thing called sky Mall. Remember
- 49:20Speaker 3: sky Mall on the planes when you Yeah, I had
- 49:25Speaker 3: stuff crapped from the sharper, stuff from you name it.
- 49:29Speaker 3: They had it all right. So I finally had a
- 49:32Speaker 3: little bit of money, and I had seen these damn
- 49:35Speaker 3: magazines forever since I was a little kid and stuff,
- 49:38Speaker 3: and I was just like, that would be so cool
- 49:40Speaker 3: to one day, just like if I ever made money,
- 49:42Speaker 3: just go through Skymall and just start circling everything I
- 49:44Speaker 3: wanted to get coud. I got Harry Potter wands I
- 49:49Speaker 3: got I put I lived on a golf course. I
- 49:52Speaker 3: got like a six foot Bigfoot statue.
- 49:55Speaker 1: I remember the Bigfoot statue.
- 49:57Speaker 3: I bought one and put it out on the golf
- 50:00Speaker 3: It was just a mess with the golfers, like kind
- 50:01Speaker 3: of hiding me on a tree. Never picked it up,
- 50:05Speaker 3: just left it left if anybody got scared. There was
- 50:09Speaker 3: remember Gallum from Lord of the Rings. Yeah, there's one
- 50:11Speaker 3: of him crawling out of the ground that looked like
- 50:13Speaker 3: it was a statue. It was like this big got that.
- 50:17Speaker 3: Remember the cryptex oh from the Angels and Demons or whatever. Yeah,
- 50:22Speaker 3: Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Tom Hanks, Yeah that thing got
- 50:25Speaker 3: one of those I saw.
- 50:26Speaker 1: I remember that, dude. Yeah, I mean it's so lost
- 50:29Speaker 1: right now. Yeah, clearly you are reading.
- 50:32Speaker 2: I'm clearly.
- 50:33Speaker 3: I got a clear Potter wand and it was like
- 50:35Speaker 3: eight hundred and fifty dollars. The worst thing I've ever
- 50:39Speaker 3: bought was a stick that said like Harry Potter on it.
- 50:41Speaker 3: I'm like, I could have made this, but regardless, I
- 50:44Speaker 3: just was so excited. Big kid, Yeah, like a big kid.
- 50:48Speaker 3: He just bought some really dumb.
- 50:50Speaker 1: Well, I'm excited about that you paid eight hundred dollars
- 50:53Speaker 1: because I bought my kids those same wanes at like
- 50:56Speaker 1: Universal Studios last summer for like eighty five, and I
- 50:58Speaker 1: was mad.
- 50:59Speaker 3: Then this was mine doesn't work?
- 51:01Speaker 2: Yeah, and this was like, well, there's at least makes noise?
- 51:06Speaker 1: Did you have? And if you're in the.
- 51:09Speaker 3: This was in two thousand and nine, this is my
- 51:10Speaker 3: rookie year.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:11Speaker 3: Just I'm like, oh, this is just living. I need
- 51:15Speaker 3: one of those. Yeah. Dumb, just dumbstuck.
- 51:18Speaker 2: So my rookie I had my NFL repraisement.
- 51:21Speaker 1: You know where Ted Washington put me in this card,
- 51:23Speaker 1: made me drive around, pushed me, made me make all
- 51:26Speaker 1: these sounds, and at the end he finally picks it
- 51:28Speaker 1: up and he throws it with me in it. Welcome
- 51:31Speaker 1: to the NFL, rookie, give me your welcome to the NFL.
- 51:35Speaker 2: Welcome to the NFL moment.
- 51:36Speaker 3: So well, my first practice with Bart Scott, I mean
- 51:42Speaker 3: he like he was leaning over the center, like over Nick,
- 51:47Speaker 3: and so immediately I was like, is there no outside?
- 51:52Speaker 3: And so he's just screaming you Richie Valens bleabamba looking nacho,
- 51:57Speaker 3: I'm gonna call you nao. And I can't even say
- 52:00Speaker 3: the snap because and everybody was just like crying, laughing.
- 52:09Speaker 3: I'm trying to get just get the first snap, you know,
- 52:11Speaker 3: hand off like lead zone week, you know, day one
- 52:14Speaker 3: install type stuff, and we could barely get that off
- 52:17Speaker 3: the ground. The very first time I gone the stadium
- 52:19Speaker 3: against the Rams at the Old Giant Stadium, we played
- 52:23Speaker 3: our preseason game and I come in and as soon
- 52:26Speaker 3: as I said said hut, my mouthpiece falls out of
- 52:28Speaker 3: my mouth. Freaking defensive guys are like, what an idiot?
- 52:32Speaker 3: So that was embarrassing. And then I think one of
- 52:35Speaker 3: the worst ones was it was my second year I
- 52:38Speaker 3: got these for Mike, Petton and Rex in the defensive room.
- 52:42Speaker 3: I put a bunch of stink bombs everywhere and crushed
- 52:45Speaker 3: them in their room right before meeting. And dude, they
- 52:49Speaker 3: were pissed, so pissed that they got the keys to
- 52:52Speaker 3: my car when we were out of practice, undid the
- 52:55Speaker 3: sun roof and had this guy show up at the
- 52:57Speaker 3: facility and then flooded my entire car. They fill the
- 53:00Speaker 3: entire car with pats and then closed it so when
- 53:04Speaker 3: I opened the doors, just flooded peanuts. So yeah, that
- 53:08Speaker 3: was that was a good little welcome to the NFL
- 53:10Speaker 3: and don't mess at the defensive room kind of deal.
- 53:13Speaker 2: So I just love the creativity of the hazing and
- 53:17Speaker 2: the get backs.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and the unlimited amount of money we're willing to
- 53:20Speaker 1: spend to get you back, Like there is no end,
- 53:23Speaker 1: but that will spend thousands of dollars, yes, to prove
- 53:27Speaker 1: a point.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Remember the alligator.
- 53:28Speaker 3: Yeah, you cut an alligator.
- 53:30Speaker 2: He got reviewing with the alligator.
- 53:32Speaker 1: That's a whole in his personal hour, like peanuts up
- 53:36Speaker 1: at like five am.
- 53:37Speaker 2: That's pull off.
- 53:39Speaker 3: It's so worth it.
- 53:40Speaker 1: It is so worth it. Fake big old fake alligator,
- 53:43Speaker 1: like a five foot alligator just looks very real too.
- 53:46Speaker 2: He scared everybody for a whole day in the house. Also,
- 53:49Speaker 2: it's great.
- 53:49Speaker 1: All right, you talked about your welcome to the NFL.
- 53:53Speaker 1: How about your your welcome to marriage?
- 53:57Speaker 2: Oh moment?
- 53:57Speaker 3: Yeah, what was like?
- 53:59Speaker 2: And do you have any advice because we all stink at.
- 54:01Speaker 3: It over here, so like I'm an expert, I'm like
- 54:03Speaker 3: three months.
- 54:04Speaker 1: And yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 54:05Speaker 2: That nothing You're not gonna get any better than where
- 54:08Speaker 2: you're at right now.
- 54:08Speaker 3: I think Ry Perry plant an incredible an incredible wedding,
- 54:15Speaker 3: and my thing was like I was just happy she
- 54:18Speaker 3: invited me.
- 54:19Speaker 1: You know, like video looked great, she uh colors, she
- 54:22Speaker 1: nailed all that.
- 54:23Speaker 3: And she picked out like ninety nine percent of it.
- 54:26Speaker 3: Every occasionally I'd get to input a little bit, give
- 54:28Speaker 3: a little input, but she dialed it all in. And
- 54:32Speaker 3: I'm so lucky to have somebody who balances me out right,
- 54:35Speaker 3: because I can go like hard charger, no feelings, just
- 54:38Speaker 3: like I got to get this done, like let's go.
- 54:40Speaker 3: We want to be the best broadcast team, you know.
- 54:42Speaker 3: And she's just such a good balance of like, hey,
- 54:45Speaker 3: let's take a step back, relax minute, the world's not
- 54:48Speaker 3: over today, Like let's just hang in there and just
- 54:50Speaker 3: give a little time to the fam. Let's, you know,
- 54:52Speaker 3: do some other stuff. Get your mind off of that
- 54:54Speaker 3: for a second, and then you'll be refreshed ready to roll.
- 54:56Speaker 3: So she's perfect balance for me. And we had so
- 54:59Speaker 3: much fun, so much fun at the wedding. Honeymoon we
- 55:02Speaker 3: went to Safari in Africa, which was incredible. Dude, I
- 55:06Speaker 3: highly recommend if you guys haven't gone, but I've never
- 55:11Speaker 3: seen like nature like that. It's like watching in Africa.
- 55:14Speaker 3: We went Kenya, and Tanzania. Okay, and so it's we
- 55:18Speaker 3: saw the great migration of the wilde beest. Two million
- 55:21Speaker 3: wildebeest in every direction that you can see through binoculars
- 55:25Speaker 3: and in front of your face, like it's like twenty
- 55:27Speaker 3: five feet they're right next to you and they just
- 55:30Speaker 3: go NonStop and they're moving through the camp. And it
- 55:33Speaker 3: was incredible, man, watching these lions hunt. And it was
- 55:37Speaker 3: you see giraffes nursing baby lion cubs nursing like it
- 55:41Speaker 3: was beautiful, man, it was. It was really cool. And
- 55:43Speaker 3: that was once again her, she planned it all with
- 55:46Speaker 3: this incredible travel planner. So now time, what were the
- 55:49Speaker 3: mosquitos like, No mosquito.
- 55:51Speaker 1: They were bad, not as bad as that was a
- 55:54Speaker 1: question I never would have thought about.
- 56:00Speaker 3: Are they on you like that? Because they're usually on
- 56:02Speaker 3: her too. They attack certain people. I think it's the thing.
- 56:04Speaker 3: It's either a blood type or like your temperature. It's
- 56:07Speaker 3: something they like black people. I guess I don't know, dude,
- 56:09Speaker 3: I get ate up. See I'm not terrible. My wife is.
- 56:13Speaker 3: She gets it so bad. But they have all the
- 56:17Speaker 3: plays out there. Nobody has off or like any of
- 56:20Speaker 3: the stuff we sell here in the us. You know
- 56:21Speaker 3: what they have, like the regular stuff that's in plants,
- 56:25Speaker 3: you know, and they like strip down some plans and
- 56:28Speaker 3: rub it on you. They got the peppermint, like natural
- 56:30Speaker 3: vanilla this or whatever. And it was like, oh, you
- 56:33Speaker 3: don't need all that other stuff.
- 56:34Speaker 2: We don't even need it.
- 56:35Speaker 1: Yeah, so waste money, dude. And it was it was
- 56:39Speaker 1: it was really cool to see that.
- 56:40Speaker 3: You know, you literally see the mosquitos come near and
- 56:42Speaker 3: it's like the natural stuff and there's you making you
- 56:45Speaker 3: turn gone. It was really cool.
- 56:47Speaker 2: That's cool. So Mount Rushmore four people?
- 56:51Speaker 1: Okay, what is your personal Mount Rushmore of people that
- 56:55Speaker 1: have had success in childhood, high school, college, NFL just out.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Your entire life?
- 57:01Speaker 3: Good lord, I mean, sheesh, Pop's got to be on there.
- 57:08Speaker 3: I mean there's four places, which is perfect because I
- 57:10Speaker 3: have two brothers, my dad and my mom. That's that's
- 57:12Speaker 3: a no brainer. I think man like mentors and stuff.
- 57:20Speaker 3: Coach Carrol's got to be on there. I think Bob Johnson,
- 57:23Speaker 3: my high school coach, has got to be on there.
- 57:26Speaker 3: Oh man, this is a hard one. Yeah. When it
- 57:31Speaker 3: comes to just straight up football, I mean whether it's
- 57:37Speaker 3: Aaron or Tom Brady, a man, I think ability throwing
- 57:42Speaker 3: the ball. Wise, it's got to be Aaron. If it's
- 57:45Speaker 3: accomplishments and super Bowls and winning and all the records,
- 57:48Speaker 3: he said, it's got to be Tom.
- 57:52Speaker 1: Man.
- 57:53Speaker 3: I'm trying to think. Yeah, because all the time, all time,
- 57:56Speaker 3: all time favorite athlete ever was Kobe Bryant. Probably second
- 58:00Speaker 3: would be Carson Palmer. And I was Carson's ball boy
- 58:03Speaker 3: and water boy when he was in high school. Really yeah,
- 58:05Speaker 3: like I Carson was like my dog. So Coach Carroll
- 58:08Speaker 3: had to make this tape, this highlight tape of plays
- 58:11Speaker 3: that Carson ran and plays that I ran when I
- 58:14Speaker 3: filled in for John David Boody for three games moving
- 58:16Speaker 3: into the next year. Because I would only go in
- 58:18Speaker 3: the office and watch Carson tape. I would watch all
- 58:20Speaker 3: old film of him, Norm Chow and all these guys,
- 58:25Speaker 3: Big Tom West, Coast, Kelly Freaking Mike Williams, like all
- 58:29Speaker 3: these guys. Right. So Pete had to make this like
- 58:33Speaker 3: fifteen play clip and it went, Carson play my play,
- 58:37Speaker 3: Carson played my play, And they're almost identical plays because
- 58:39Speaker 3: we're running the same offense. So it's like, you know,
- 58:41Speaker 3: play action to left, boot out to the right, throw
- 58:43Speaker 3: the deep comeback on the run, boom, Carson does it.
- 58:45Speaker 3: I do it. And so after the the matchup or
- 58:48Speaker 3: after the mashup of the tape, Coach Carrol's like, what
- 58:51Speaker 3: did you see? And I said, Carson's awesome. He goes,
- 58:56Speaker 3: all right, every play we put in there like look,
- 58:59Speaker 3: and he showed me the description of all the place.
- 59:02Speaker 3: He's like, you did exactly what Carson did. I need
- 59:05Speaker 3: you to be our quarterback. I need you to be
- 59:07Speaker 3: Mark Sanchez, not Mark Sanchez trying to be Carson Palmer.
- 59:10Speaker 3: Take Carson off the pedestel, and I need you to
- 59:12Speaker 3: be yourself and be our starter because you're gonna be
- 59:14Speaker 3: our starter this year. And that's kind of how he
- 59:16Speaker 3: told me, like that was and I was like, damn,
- 59:18Speaker 3: so like that is how I resonate with or how
- 59:22Speaker 3: Coach Carrol resonates with.
- 59:23Speaker 2: Yah.
- 59:23Speaker 3: Sure, ever, forget that of him making me me and go.
- 59:28Speaker 3: You know, I had to get through something to get
- 59:29Speaker 3: where I wanted to go, and he knew part of
- 59:31Speaker 3: that was taking Carson down well, respecting him of course,
- 59:35Speaker 3: but so yeah, that that kind of encompasses two of
- 59:38Speaker 3: those guys that I love.
- 59:40Speaker 1: I think it's really cool how sometimes not all people
- 59:43Speaker 1: have like this over this confidence to where we still
- 59:48Speaker 1: need to be told we.
- 59:49Speaker 2: Do it, that we can achieve.
- 59:50Speaker 1: It's okay, believe in yourself and that you got it all.
- 59:55Speaker 2: We just need you to go do it. So that's
- 59:57Speaker 2: that's really special. Man.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Appreciate you showing sharing all your stories. Mark Man, it's
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: been a it's been a blessing man. Thank you, Bro,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: Thank you guys. We're gonna hang out more. You guys
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: are in something. Yeah, I'm winning. We ain't doing nothing
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: to that.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: I need to go to Dana Point I used to
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: live on. So yeah, that's what's up. That's what's up.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Hey man, I'm just trying to go appreciate it. I'm
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: just trying to go, who am I kid? We're gonna
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: get three holes for you? Yeah, for sure, we're gonna
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: get We're gonna get three or four holes for you.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: We're gonna get around and golf at the hotel.
