- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back, UConn Football Coaches Show on the radio, and
- 0:03Speaker 1: Friday Night Lights coming up this week at the Rent.
- 0:08Speaker 1: UMass coming in 4-3, lost three in a row after
- 0:12Speaker 1: a 4-0 start. They're 1-3 in the MAAC, a conference
- 0:16Speaker 1: there that Jason Candle came from, so you know all
- 0:18Speaker 1: about the competitiveness of that league. They're coming off a loss, Buffalo,
- 0:23Speaker 1: in overtime, a game that UMass probably could have won
- 0:27Speaker 1: very easily, but they didn't. And they've also lost to
- 0:30Speaker 1: Eastern Michigan and a one-pointer against Miami, Ohio, another one
- 0:33Speaker 1: they could have won. So big picture looking at a
- 0:37Speaker 1: rival like that. And you're just getting into this first
- 0:40Speaker 1: year at UConn. But UMass is right there. They're a
- 0:43Speaker 1: few miles up the road on I-91. They're a border
- 0:47Speaker 1: team that we played many years over the course of time.
- 0:51Speaker 1: And when you get in those kind of battles... uh,
- 0:54Speaker 1: how do you sell that to the team or do
- 0:56Speaker 1: you have to sell it? I mean, this is a
- 0:58Speaker 1: roster full of new guys that you have, but they're
- 1:01Speaker 1: playing a team that's right in your backyard.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I mean, I think for me, you, you, you, you
- 1:07Speaker 2: got to shed some light on it just from the
- 1:09Speaker 2: importance of, you know, all the things that you just mentioned. Um,
- 1:14Speaker 2: but not more light than what you shed on making
- 1:16Speaker 2: sure that you go out there and you play really
- 1:18Speaker 2: good football and your videotape looks the way it's supposed
- 1:20Speaker 2: to look. Um, That's a week-to-week battle for every college
- 1:24Speaker 2: football team across the country. We're no different there than
- 1:28Speaker 2: anybody else. There's upsets every Saturday in college football. There's
- 1:32Speaker 2: teams that are punching above their weight. There's other ones
- 1:35Speaker 2: that are punching below their weight. You want to be
- 1:39Speaker 2: the first case study there. You want to make sure
- 1:41Speaker 2: that you're playing at your best. I think that there's
- 1:45Speaker 2: a part of it that there's a little external motivation,
- 1:49Speaker 2: but I've never been a coach and I've never been,
- 1:52Speaker 2: you know, asked the coach, you know, you know, asked
- 1:54Speaker 2: our teammates, our team, any team I've been a part
- 1:57Speaker 2: of to just rely on external motivation because that comes
- 2:00Speaker 2: and goes and the ebbs and flows of a college
- 2:02Speaker 2: football season. You can, if you live in that world, man,
- 2:04Speaker 2: oh man, like you can, you're setting yourself up for
- 2:06Speaker 2: a lot of disappointment in my opinion. So, uh, messages
- 2:09Speaker 2: still remain the same. You got a job to do.
- 2:11Speaker 2: You got things that you got to handle and you
- 2:13Speaker 2: got to be at your best. Um, who cares who
- 2:15Speaker 2: you're playing and where you're playing them, you know, have
- 2:17Speaker 2: a good week of practice and go play.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Shamar Porter talks about that a little later in
- 2:21Speaker 1: the show. Obviously, you don't take any opponent for granted.
- 2:26Speaker 1: You don't know about Pop Watson, their quarterback. He started
- 2:29Speaker 1: out his career at UMass. He was transferring. He's their QB.
- 2:32Speaker 1: He had a great start, but he's been hurt. He's
- 2:35Speaker 1: been out a little bit. If you face him or
- 2:38Speaker 1: you face Logan Inagawa, who's the quarterback, a sophomore, had
- 2:41Speaker 1: a pretty good day against Buffalo. Is it really the
- 2:45Speaker 1: same every week in terms of what you've got to
- 2:48Speaker 1: try to do against the opposition's QB?
- 2:52Speaker 2: Well, I think this situation is a little different. Pop's
- 2:54Speaker 2: a great player, you know, led his team to probably
- 2:58Speaker 2: arguably the best winning college football this year in that
- 3:00Speaker 2: opening game over Rutgers. Max Warner, the offensive coordinator, worked
- 3:04Speaker 2: for us last year at Toledo. So I know he's
- 3:06Speaker 2: an ace and he's going to do a great job
- 3:07Speaker 2: putting together a plan around the quarterback, whoever that is,
- 3:11Speaker 2: that will allow him to be successful. you know, you
- 3:14Speaker 2: hone in on the key concepts that you think that
- 3:16Speaker 2: they're going to, they're going to put out and bring
- 3:17Speaker 2: out to the table. And then from there, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 2: it becomes a, you know, what can you do once
- 3:22Speaker 2: the game starts to make the proper adjustments to make
- 3:24Speaker 2: sure that you, you know, limit the explosive plays and,
- 3:27Speaker 2: you know, and hopefully try to turn them over a
- 3:29Speaker 2: couple of times.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Yeah. They got a couple of good running backs, Elijah
- 3:32Speaker 1: Faulkner and Curtis Kimmons. He's got four touchdowns on the season.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Faulkner's run for almost 400 yards in the opening games.
- 3:42Speaker 1: is it come down to these things defensively that if
- 3:46Speaker 1: you keep a team from getting their running game going
- 3:49Speaker 1: and force them to go up top and throw the
- 3:51Speaker 1: ball more, is that the, is that kind of the formula? Yeah.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I mean, I think it's probably, you know, I think
- 3:58Speaker 2: everything starts with the line of scrimmage and you want to,
- 4:01Speaker 2: you know, those, the toughness element and then, you know,
- 4:04Speaker 2: all of that stuff. I think that, that wears on you,
- 4:07Speaker 2: but man, you could, You could line all 10 guys
- 4:11Speaker 2: up at the line of scrimmage and keep one guy
- 4:13Speaker 2: back and you watch the ball fly over your head
- 4:15Speaker 2: all day long. And you could call yourself the toughest
- 4:18Speaker 2: team in the world, but that scoreboard is going to
- 4:20Speaker 2: light up pretty quickly. So you've got to be able
- 4:23Speaker 2: to be balanced on defense. You've got to be able
- 4:27Speaker 2: to play zone. You've got to be able to. affect
- 4:30Speaker 2: the quarterback and, you know, the great ones, the great teams,
- 4:33Speaker 2: you got to be able to play some man coverage
- 4:35Speaker 2: and latch on the receiver so you can get the
- 4:37Speaker 2: extra hat and get the extra set of eyes and,
- 4:39Speaker 2: you know, in that run fit. So that's the game
- 4:42Speaker 2: within the game. You know, you're constantly trying to find,
- 4:45Speaker 2: you know, where that is, you know, leading up to
- 4:47Speaker 2: the game. And then ultimately, like I said, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 2: through the course of the game to make the proper adjustments.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Plus two and a turnovers against Temple. Obviously you'd
- 4:55Speaker 1: like to see that every week. creating fumbles. I mean,
- 4:59Speaker 1: there was a couple of them in that game that
- 5:00Speaker 1: were key. Punch outs. If you're a defensive player, is
- 5:04Speaker 1: that something that you could actually practice? I wonder sometimes
- 5:09Speaker 1: because you see guys look like they know what they're
- 5:12Speaker 1: doing when they're punching a ball on them. That's a
- 5:14Speaker 1: legitimate defensive play now, isn't it?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Well, I mean, they don't let you tackle in practice anymore. So,
- 5:20Speaker 2: I mean, this is on as close to on the
- 5:22Speaker 2: verge of flag football as we're ever going to see
- 5:24Speaker 2: in the history of our sport. So you have to
- 5:26Speaker 2: find ways to You know, quite honestly, the practice defense
- 5:29Speaker 2: and because there's so many non-contact practices and, you know,
- 5:35Speaker 2: this has become, you know, an art form to try
- 5:38Speaker 2: to take the football away. And it's showing up at
- 5:40Speaker 2: all levels of football, you know, and, you know, those
- 5:44Speaker 2: days you want to punch it out as many times
- 5:46Speaker 2: as you can, but it's not at the expense of
- 5:48Speaker 2: missing a tackle. And I think that's where, you know,
- 5:51Speaker 2: that's where it comes frustrating a little bit, because You know,
- 5:53Speaker 2: you don't get a chance as many times to practice
- 5:55Speaker 2: tackling as you want to. And then you go to
- 5:58Speaker 2: the games, you miss tackles. And, you know, guys are
- 6:00Speaker 2: trying to punch the ball out, that kind of thing. So,
- 6:02Speaker 2: you know, you get what you teach, you get what
- 6:04Speaker 2: you coach and what you're allowed to coach. So it's
- 6:07Speaker 2: definitely a big part of our game. But like I said,
- 6:10Speaker 2: you just try to make sure it's not the expense
- 6:12Speaker 2: of missing tackles.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm with you on that. All right, Coach Candle
- 6:15Speaker 1: will be back with us. One final segment with him.
- 6:17Speaker 1: We continue on the UConn Football Coaches Show here on
- 6:20Speaker 1: the radio on Learfields.
