Transcript
- 0:09Hello, welcome back to another episode of Banter Laurentia.
- 0:12How are you ordering? Hope you're doing great.
- 0:14Now for today's episode we're going to be discussing
- 0:16investment. Yes, investments in Nigeria or
- 0:21or investments in Naira and investment in foreign currency.
- 0:25Example, the dollar and the pounds, the euro, whichever one
- 0:30you want to invest in. Now the reason why I'm talking
- 0:35about this is because of the conversation going on between
- 0:38Daddy Freeze and the very dark black man.
- 0:42Now the conversation started when Daddy Freeze stated that
- 0:46buying a Rolex watch is more profitable than buying a
- 0:51property in Nigeria. According to him.
- 0:53He said his Rolex watch has appreciated more than his
- 0:57property in Nigeria because of the Naira devaluation.
- 1:00According to him, he bought his property 200,000 in I think 2012
- 1:05or 2013. And then right now, because of
- 1:09the Naira, his property has actually gone down while the
- 1:12watches that he bought in dollars have appreciated or
- 1:17doubled or whatever he was talking about.
- 1:20Some people are not happy with this statement because they said
- 1:22why would you advise the youths to buy a watch than actually buy
- 1:26property that properties they are more durable or they are
- 1:31more valuable than Rolex watches.
- 1:34Now the very dark black man made a video kind of basically
- 1:40telling that he frees off saying that he shouldn't have said such
- 1:43things. He's a lot of people look up to
- 1:46him, so why is he trying to mislead people that this is not
- 1:50a good thing to talk about and all that.
- 1:51So it has been going back and forth between the referees and
- 1:55the very dark black man. Now before I go into my
- 1:58policies, there was this conversation that the
- 2:01differentiated online. There was a man who wrote to him
- 2:06and said in 2013 he bought his house, you know, he was he had
- 2:11liquid cash. Basically he lives abroad.
- 2:13So he bought a house for $250,000.
- 2:19He needed a about $10,000 to kind of you know get it up to
- 2:25his standard and everything. And then he rented the house out
- 2:29because he lives abroad. He's not in Nigeria.
- 2:30So we're talking about $260,000 he invested in that house.
- 2:37Now because of the Naira devaluation today he has lost
- 2:41over half of that money. Like somebody spends 260
- 2:46thousand to buy a house. Just imagine that even if you're
- 2:49losing just 100,000, you can imagine losing £100,000 of
- 2:53$100,000 or €100,000 you know, to something you saw as an
- 3:00investment. Now the reason why people in
- 3:03Nigeria are not understanding this whole thing is because of
- 3:07the previous generation. Basically to those, the best way
- 3:10to invest is property, you know, and you are not.
- 3:14First of all, you have to buy especially both people.
- 3:17You first of all to building your village.
- 3:19Go, go, go. You have to for people to know.
- 3:24How would they know that you have made money?
- 3:27If you've not built a mansion in the village now it's about OK
- 3:30just building 1 duplex or one bedroom wall.
- 3:34Just be something convenient. No, they're going to say it just
- 3:37be that that nonsense that he built.
- 3:38No, you have to build a mansion and this has truncated so many
- 3:44people's growth. You see a lot of people
- 3:45travelling abroad and the first money they make, they send it
- 3:48back home to build mansions or structures and to them that is
- 3:53an investment. And remember when you were doing
- 3:56all these things, they were younger.
- 3:57They could work most of this work round the clock, send this
- 4:01money home and just imagine. So people even get loans to be
- 4:06able to do this because you know, building, you know
- 4:09projects you can budgets any amount of money you're still
- 4:15going to like because people are going to cheat you.
- 4:19Even when his family members are running these things, they are
- 4:22going to try to syphon money here and there.
- 4:25So you're going to end up spending if not times 2 of what
- 4:29you think you will spend on that project.
- 4:32So a lot of people end up taking loans to complete those
- 4:36projects. And once those projects are
- 4:37completed, it is very difficult for them to now do anything
- 4:41apart because you spent your youth trying to build a mansion
- 4:45in the village to show people are past my neighbour.
- 4:49I think that is just what I think about building houses in
- 4:52the village because that is just what it is.
- 4:55It's not an investment. OK, let's say you are even
- 4:57buying houses in Lagos or you're buying house.
- 5:00I don't have any problem with people investing in Nigeria.
- 5:05Don't get me wrong, I think before I would start any
- 5:08investment, the first investment I think anybody should do is
- 5:12invest in yourself. Invest in yourself like is.
- 5:16I'm not just talking about educationally.
- 5:19Learn different skills, Make sure that you can do different
- 5:22things. Plan for retirement on yourself
- 5:26apart from investment. Then you go into investments.
- 5:29Let's say you are living abroad because most of the people that
- 5:32these affect are people living in diaspora.
- 5:35You're earning in dollars and you're investing in naira.
- 5:39How does that even make sense? It it does not.
- 5:42The math is not matching. Recently I was told about a
- 5:46friend, kind of a group friend, who built a mansion in the
- 5:49village. Like a mansion.
- 5:52Yeah, I saw the videos, I my mouth, my jaw dropped.
- 5:56A very massive house. And in the UK, here that person
- 6:02is living in a room, you know, rented a room in house,
- 6:06basically. There's nothing wrong with that.
- 6:08There's nothing wrong with, you know, renting a room.
- 6:11That is the way you want to live, no problem.
- 6:13But building the living in A room.
- 6:17I'm building a mansion in Nigeria.
- 6:20A mansion that you're not going to stay up to two weeks.
- 6:23There is no way. You're just going to stay in
- 6:25that village for a month. You're going to move around.
- 6:27You're going to want to go to Lagos.
- 6:29You're going to want to go to Abuja.
- 6:30You want to go to Buzzacott. You want to you want to go where
- 6:33your friends are. You want to see things, you want
- 6:36to know. OK, what?
- 6:36You're not just going to stay in that village.
- 6:39So that's for me is is stupid investments.
- 6:45I'm sorry, but that does not make any sense.
- 6:49If I was in that, what I would do is that money.
- 6:52First of all, what I will do is sort out my accommodation in
- 6:55your primary residence before you start buying crypto, before
- 7:01you start buying shares, before you start buying, sort out your
- 7:05primary residence. Make sure that OK let's you.
- 7:09You may not buy 100% that payments puts the 100% money,
- 7:15but you can go on a mortgage that rents that you're going to
- 7:18be paying in that one room. You can use that same brand and
- 7:22pay as a mortgage if you know what you're doing.
- 7:25I understand that you know you have parents that will tell you
- 7:28who you should come and build your father's house.
- 7:32Is is no longer OK. You have to come and build so
- 7:35that people will know, so that you know, see, parents can push
- 7:39you. You want to show their own
- 7:44people or their peers. That's OK My son travelled or my
- 7:48daughter travelled and they've made all this money.
- 7:51They are not thinking finer. See if you if our parents
- 7:54actually have financial literacy, Nigeria will not be
- 7:59the way it is today. That is one thing I want
- 8:02everybody to get and I am not saying don't listen to your
- 8:05parents, but put look at it this way.
- 8:09You make money. The first money you make, you
- 8:13use it to build a mansion in Nigeria to whether to satisfy
- 8:18your ego, to satisfy your parents, to prepare your
- 8:21neighbour to do our past. My neighbour whatever that is,
- 8:26you built that house, let's say you could easily calculate how
- 8:32much you've spent because that is why I transfer you were
- 8:35transferring that money to Nigeria.
- 8:37Just sit down, open the spreadsheet, calculate that
- 8:41money that you've sent, that money is enough for a down
- 8:46payment of a house, if not half of that house that you want to
- 8:52buy. Now I'm not saying no, go to New
- 8:54York City to buy a house. Or you can start somewhere you
- 8:58can go to, you know, neighbouring towns that are not
- 9:02that expensive. Just get on the property ladder
- 9:05and then you can easily build your way up.
- 9:08If you get on the property like that, you're still making money.
- 9:11You you are still making money. You can now use that as a
- 9:15building structure. So if you want to build in
- 9:16Nigeria but most times what happens is that the first money
- 9:21that people make, even those that in Nigeria, they want to
- 9:25build house in the village. They go and build house in the
- 9:28village, bury their sometimes they even bury their capital in
- 9:31that village. Once they finish building the
- 9:34house, they realised that OK, I have spent much more than I
- 9:37bargained for and right now I don't even have any other money
- 9:40to to run my business. That is where you now start
- 9:44hearing 01 village woman. He went to one that old man's
- 9:49house. The old man give him something
- 9:52to drink or he saw this man and shook his hand.
- 9:56Since then yeah his business has fallen or he was going hell he
- 10:01just like they will now start blaming village people while old
- 10:06man 1 old woman not knowing it's a financial decision is those
- 10:12financial decision that you have made some people say and since
- 10:17they came back ohh they had stroke.
- 10:19They had this where I would, you know, have stroke.
- 10:23When you realise that you buried all your capital in the village
- 10:26and distressing alone will give you stroke.
- 10:31This trust alone will give you high blood pressure.
- 10:33These stress alone is going to you.
- 10:40What is it of us to learn from these things?
- 10:43It's easier to pass that blame than to actually sit down, look
- 10:47at yourself and say I made a bad financial decision.
- 10:52We have to start looking at investments.
- 10:55Anybody living in diaspora, the I think that you've not invested
- 11:02anything in diaspora and you think the first thing you need
- 11:06to do is to invest in Nigeria or your for you or your for you
- 11:14because you are pegging the dollar to the naira you are
- 11:21sending dollar. It might look like a lot you
- 11:24know you're sending $1000 one million.
- 11:27So you're like a hey, when I first got to the UK there was
- 11:31this Ghanaian chicken shop, chicken and chip shop.
- 11:33They sell other things, but I just love their chicken and
- 11:35chips because of the pepper. Like the chicken is grilled with
- 11:40Pepe. So when I'm whenever I'm coming
- 11:43back from school, I always go there to, you know, once in a
- 11:46while, maybe 2-3 times a week, you know, a new person now.
- 11:51Chicken nachos then was about £2.50, you know, And so I would
- 11:57just go there like a full lap chicken hair with chips.
- 12:02So there was this old lady was only sitting down there looking
- 12:05at me. I always greet her, you know,
- 12:07you know, this kind of nosy old women that will, that will stare
- 12:10at you until you greet them. So she was that type.
- 12:13So I always greet her before I go into the shop.
- 12:17So that day I just got the chicken, you know, was going
- 12:20outside and she called me and said because there are seats
- 12:23outside she should sit there. I sat down.
- 12:25I was like, hey this is my so she said are you a student?
- 12:30I said yes. She said why you lose buying?
- 12:33Can you cook? I said yes.
- 12:34She said why you lose buying chicken and chips.
- 12:36I said just like the Pepe. She said, well you can you can
- 12:39actually do that, that she's just trying to advise me you
- 12:43that she was once a student when she came here she was doing all
- 12:46these things. This woman you know I had to now
- 12:49sit down there said eating my because he was getting cold.
- 12:52I had to sit down there and she was telling me her stories.
- 12:55She said she got here as a student was spending her money.
- 12:59She did not invest. She said everything she was
- 13:02making, she was sending back to Nigeria that today we are
- 13:05talking about 2009 in the UK economy was still OK, OK, no, we
- 13:11were coming out from the 2008 financial crisis, but even at
- 13:16that it was not as bad as it is today.
- 13:19So they just got out of that financial crisis.
- 13:22Everything was at that time just bad, bad, bad, bad, bad.
- 13:27So she was telling me that that she would advise me a lot of
- 13:32people. Then she said some of our
- 13:34friends bought houses. They are the only ones that are
- 13:37actually just relaxing now because most of them don't have
- 13:41house, you know, rents to pay and all that.
- 13:44She sent all her money into Nigeria and then relied on
- 13:49governments aid that today. How much are they giving her?
- 13:54She. Yes dishes.
- 13:55But the kind of life she's living today, she look at her
- 13:58friends that they are just living.
- 14:01They are living and she's just existing.
- 14:03And that was the last day I bought you.
- 14:08That was the last day I bought chicken and chips in that shop.
- 14:10Not that I stopped eating chicken and chips, but I just
- 14:14stopped going to that shop because I he just freaked me out
- 14:17like you know how I was young. So I I just, this old woman just
- 14:24dumped this whole story on me and I didn't know how to process
- 14:30it. But looking back today, it was
- 14:32like a time travel because God said I just felt that God sent
- 14:36had to meet to warn me about you know the future.
- 14:41So today I talk about investments.
- 14:43Today I talk about retirement not because of Oh my God, I'm
- 14:48afraid of that, but because of what I have seen.
- 14:54I work in project management and most times you work with people
- 14:58in their 50s, sixties, especially in 80 projects.
- 15:02In the middle management level you really get younger people
- 15:09and get developers who are younger, but in the mid
- 15:11management you really get younger people.
- 15:14So it's like 50 from 50 and above.
- 15:16So I have spoken to a lot of people who are closer to
- 15:21retirement and one thing they will tell you is they wish they
- 15:25had done this, done that. My point is we should start
- 15:29looking into what we actually put our money into.
- 15:32I am not saying don't be the houses in Nigeria.
- 15:34I am not saying don't build mansions in your village, but
- 15:37ensure that you have a primary residence that you're going to
- 15:41stay in. Ensure life.
- 15:44You lose your job today because if I have £160,000 to to one
- 15:50building mansion in the village Amal pay my mortgage.
- 15:53I am not even supporting that. The freeze to buy a Rolex watch.
- 15:56If you're in Nigeria, a Rolex watch makes more sense of an
- 16:00investment to him because he may not be able to buy property in
- 16:05the UK, he may not be able to buy property in diaspora.
- 16:09So to him, Rolex makes more sense.
- 16:13But we have a lot of diasporans who don't even have owning
- 16:18property or investments. Then they have mansions in the
- 16:24village, or they have a crypto wallet or they have a that you
- 16:28see people putting money in places where if that money crash
- 16:35your primary residence, you're still paying for that and that
- 16:40is going to eat a chunk of your income.
- 16:45And then you now lost the income.
- 16:47What do you do at that point? You cannot go and cash out your
- 16:51mansion in the village. You want to cash out your
- 16:54Bitcoin. Maybe at that point it is low.
- 16:57You maybe you've lost. I know somebody who lost like
- 17:00they invested 50,000. According to them, who is this
- 17:06lie? A lot.
- 17:09They lost about 50,000. So listen, do whatever you're
- 17:14comfortable with, you know, life is all about looking at
- 17:18yourself, looking at your situation or your circumstances
- 17:21and making decision based on the resources that you have.
- 17:25What I'm saying, if you're in that spora, there are things
- 17:28that you can put in place to ensure that at the downtime or
- 17:33at the later age of your life you are able to still manage
- 17:37yourself. Well now all I have to say is do
- 17:41what works for you, do what you can live with.
- 17:46Because if you sit down in your one room in Diaspora and think
- 17:52about your mansion in the village and that gives you
- 17:55satisfaction, that is very OK. If you can sit in one room and
- 17:59think about you, have a mansion, rented mansion in Lagos,
- 18:03wherever, and that gives you satisfaction, by all means do it
- 18:08now. That is your choice.
- 18:11That is your prerogative. Do whatever you like Anyway.
