- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 148, Psalm
- 0:20148, and this is one of my favorite Psalms.
- 0:24It has so many cool things in it, and I'm really looking
- 0:28forward to diving into it with you all today.
- 0:31There's also an incredible song written by Sovereign Grace Music
- 0:36from this Psalm. It's called Praise His Name,
- 0:40Psalm 148, Praise His Name, and I would really, really encourage
- 0:46you to listen to it. It is musically beautiful.
- 0:51It will help you to learn and memorize and meditate on the
- 0:55word of God. And so I just want to encourage
- 0:58you in that way. But look up that song.
- 1:01It is in the show notes. So all you have to do is click.
- 1:04And I know that it'll be a blessing to you.
- 1:06Let's read through this passage together.
- 1:08Hallelujah. Praise Yahweh from the heavens.
- 1:12Praise Him in the heights. Praise him all his angels,
- 1:16praise him, all his heavenly armies, Praise him, sun and
- 1:20moon. Praise Him all you shining
- 1:23stars, praise Him highest heavens, and you waters above
- 1:27the heavens. Let them praise the name of the
- 1:30Lord, for He commanded and they were created.
- 1:33He set them in position forever and ever.
- 1:36He gave an order that will never pass away.
- 1:41Praise Yahweh from the earth, all sea monsters and ocean
- 1:45depths, lightning and hail, snow and cloud, stormy wind that
- 1:51executes His command, mountains and all hills, fruit trees and
- 1:55all Cedars, wild animals and all cattle, creatures that crawl and
- 2:00flying birds. Kings of the earth and all
- 2:03peoples, Princess and all judges of the earth, Young men as well
- 2:08as young women, old and young together.
- 2:10Let them praise the name of Yahweh, for His name alone is
- 2:14exalted. His Majesty covers heaven and
- 2:17earth. He has raised up a horn for His
- 2:20people, resulting in praise to all His faithful ones, to the
- 2:24Israelites, the people close to Him.
- 2:27Hallelujah. Now you might say, wow, that was
- 2:30just like a lot of things that were instructed to praise God.
- 2:36What in the world could we learn from this?
- 2:39Well, I think there are some wonderful things we can learn
- 2:41about God, about his transcendence, about his
- 2:46intricate and innate worth. And also we're going to be able
- 2:51to see some things both about the scene and the unseen, the
- 2:55spiritual and the physical. So let's begin in verses one
- 2:59through 6, the first portion of the Psalm, or I guess I'll give
- 3:03you guys kind of the the two-part format, the styling,
- 3:08the layout that there is for the Psalm.
- 3:10So we would all remember Genesis 11 in the beginning, God created
- 3:14the heavens and the earth. He created the skies and the
- 3:17land would be another way that you would put that.
- 3:20And so in verses one through 6 of this passage, it's talking
- 3:24about the skies and those things that were believed to inhabit
- 3:30the skies, or if you will, the unseen realm.
- 3:33What we can't touch, we might be able to see some of the work of
- 3:39these beings or these things, but we can't interact with them.
- 3:44And then so that's the first part is verses one through 6.
- 3:47What is in the skies or the heavens?
- 3:50And then in verses 7 through 14, what is on the earth, the land,
- 3:55what we can touch? And so let's look first in
- 4:01verses one through 6 and see what is in the heavens.
- 4:06Verse one, Hallelujah, praise Yahweh from the heavens, praise
- 4:11him in the heights. So all right, what is up there
- 4:15that can praise God even as we think today about the skies, we
- 4:20go, well, you know, there, there's not really much up there
- 4:23as we think about space, You know, there's some planets,
- 4:27there's some meteoroids, there's some comets, there's some stars,
- 4:31maybe some black holes. But but that's really all that
- 4:34there is. Well, as the Israelite people
- 4:38back then, as as all of the ancient Near Eastern peoples
- 4:41thought about the skies, there was an innate time in with these
- 4:51large, majestic, distant celestial bodies that were so
- 4:59regular that we're in such normal habits that you could
- 5:05determine what time of year it was by the movement of these
- 5:10bodies. You could determine when it was,
- 5:13you know, time for harvest or when it was time to plant seeds.
- 5:18You could even, this is what's told to us in Genesis 1.
- 5:22And then all the way through the the Torah of the law was that
- 5:27Israel determined its religious festivals as a result of when
- 5:33God said, I want you during this particular month, which is when
- 5:39the moon and the stars are in these spots.
- 5:43Here's what I want you to do. And so there was almost a sense
- 5:47of, there was a, a picture that these celestial bodies were not
- 5:52just perhaps items, but that these were tied in with
- 5:59spiritual beings that as they, if you will, control our our
- 6:03seasons, as they control so much of our religious festivals, that
- 6:08there must be spiritual beings behind this.
- 6:13And so this is the way that Scripture often talks about the
- 6:19the things that we would know now as stars and planets,
- 6:23comets, meteors and asteroids is they describe them in tandem
- 6:28with the spiritual beings, those creatures that God has created
- 6:33that we cannot see, but that are immensely powerful that have
- 6:36their own, if you will, realm of ruling that the angels as would
- 6:43be the the normal way we would talk about spiritual beings that
- 6:45are not God himself, but the spiritual beings they are in
- 6:50charge of these celestial bodies.
- 6:54And so you can even see this back in the church fathers,
- 6:59which would be the pastors and leaders, writers from about the,
- 7:05you know, 100 AD all the way to, I don't know when the cut off
- 7:09for that is, but it's like 5 or 600 AD.
- 7:12As these believers in Jesus looked at the Old and the New
- 7:17Testament and saw what God had to say about the angels.
- 7:21As they looked up at the night sky and saw these things that
- 7:26God had created, that God had put together.
- 7:30They always tied it in with the angels.
- 7:33And there was almost an assumption that the way that our
- 7:37universe and even our world works is put to not necessarily
- 7:43put together, but it is directed, it is helped, it is
- 7:48accomplished through angelic means.
- 7:52Now, this isn't to, if you will counter any sort of scientific
- 7:57claims about the world. It's not a OK, well, no, gravity
- 8:01doesn't exist. It's that there's an invisible
- 8:03Angel that's pulling you, you know, back down to the surface
- 8:06or something. That wasn't the claim.
- 8:08The claim was that in everything in creation God has his hands,
- 8:14his movement in our world and in the cosmos, but he has mentioned
- 8:21in scripture that he has done so by means of the spiritual
- 8:25beings, so that even our day-to-day lives are affected by
- 8:31spiritual beings all around us. I I think I'd mentioned man way
- 8:35back in Acts. I think I have an episode title
- 8:38from the old, I can't remember which old country group it was,
- 8:42but it might be Alabama or something.
- 8:45The song is, I believe there are Angels Among Us.
- 8:50And I think that the scriptures would testify to this truth that
- 8:55every iota of our life God cares about.
- 8:58And what we're told in Hebrews one or two is that God has
- 9:03actually made the spiritual beings to be servants, to be
- 9:06ministers first and foremost to him, but then also to help his
- 9:11people, that they help to protect us.
- 9:15We read that over and over again in the Old Testament and then
- 9:18even into the new. And so when we think about our
- 9:22world, nothing is without the touch and work of God.
- 9:28Now there are unfortunately those spiritual beings that,
- 9:32like many humans, have also decided to, if you will, go
- 9:36rogue. And you can think about Satan
- 9:39and his testing of Job, that there is demonic influence even
- 9:45on things like a whirlwind or a tornado there that kills Job's
- 9:50family. That there is actual demonic
- 9:52activity that is a result of evil, if you will, natural evil.
- 9:58In our world. We are told by Paul that Satan
- 10:02is the Prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now
- 10:07works in the children of disobedience.
- 10:10And so as we think about the heavens, as we think about the
- 10:13cosmos, certainly we can think about the beauty of nature and
- 10:18all of the things that you can see on, you know, National
- 10:21Geographic or things that you can pull up a website and look
- 10:24at the wonders of the stars. And that's an amazing thing.
- 10:28And you can be amazed at the wonder and beauty that our God
- 10:32has put into creation. But we can also think, God,
- 10:36there is so much more to our universe than just the physical.
- 10:41There's more than just what we can see.
- 10:43And God, you have your hand in every atom of creation.
- 10:49I forget now if quarks have been empirically proven or something.
- 10:53But whatever exists, God has his hands in it, and he is chosen to
- 11:00interact with his creation that it would accomplish his will
- 11:03through the spiritual beings. And so as we continue here, you
- 11:08might be like, well, Brian, is that really what's being talked
- 11:11about like in the heavens? Well, look at verse 2.
- 11:14Praise him all his angels, praise him all his heavenly
- 11:19armies. This is the host of Heaven is a
- 11:22very common way that it's phrased, especially in some
- 11:26older translations or even some newer ones that retain a lot of
- 11:30traditional renderings like the New King James or the new
- 11:34American Standard Bible. Different ones like that will
- 11:36have that same phrase. Still, the host of heaven or the
- 11:40heavenly armies is what's being referenced.
- 11:42He says praise Him sun and moon, praise Him all you shining
- 11:46stars, praise Him highest heavens, and you waters above
- 11:50the heavens. That is every aspect of what God
- 11:55created. One of the things that is
- 11:58recurring in Scripture is that God is the only uncreated one.
- 12:02That He created everything else that exists, That every Angel,
- 12:09every spiritual being, even every demon has a beginning.
- 12:13That God himself created all that is.
- 12:17And here you have the heist heavens.
- 12:20It's the skies, and then the waters, the blue that is above
- 12:24the skies. These people didn't know
- 12:27everything that we knew about the cosmos, but they knew the
- 12:31most important thing, which was that God Himself had created the
- 12:35cosmos. Verse #5 He says let them praise
- 12:38the name of Yahweh, for He commanded and they were created.
- 12:41He set them in position forever and ever.
- 12:45He gave an order that will never pass away, that God set up how
- 12:50the cosmos works. He put where the sun, moon and
- 12:54stars would go and at what times and when they would make their
- 12:59journeys around the sun or other gravitational bodies.
- 13:03It's why I can't recall which word it is.
- 13:07I want to say it was probably meteor.
- 13:09The word meteor, that was in the Greek language, they called it
- 13:16like they called meteors the Wanderers, because all of these
- 13:21other celestial beings are going exactly according to plan they
- 13:28have. They're supposed to show up at
- 13:29this time, this time of year, and they're bright at this
- 13:33point. They're dim at that point, and
- 13:35then they fade off the scene. And so there's all of this
- 13:38regularity with the sun, moon, and stars, but then you have
- 13:42these Wanderers that are not following the path.
- 13:46They're not following a set path like the sun, moon, and stars
- 13:50are. And so it's one way to even
- 13:52think about the spiritual beings that you have, those angels that
- 13:56follow the Lord that obey him, and then you have the spiritual
- 13:59beings that go off on their own path.
- 14:02They wander away from the path of God.
- 14:05And it's one kind of cool or interesting way to think about
- 14:10the fallen spiritual beings. But when you look at the order
- 14:14of the cosmos, when you look at the placement of where
- 14:18everything is in creation, when you look at how intense gravity
- 14:22is, if gravity were any stronger, we would all be
- 14:26crushed. Life would be near impossible on
- 14:28Earth. If gravity were less, it would
- 14:31cause 1000 other problems. God fine-tuned everything in the
- 14:35universe so that we would be able to exist, that we would
- 14:39know and praise and worship him. And so we ought to praise this
- 14:45God, the God who made everything above, everything unseen, and
- 14:50then starting in verse #7 praise Yahweh from the earth.
- 14:54So now we've gone from the heavens and the spiritual beings
- 14:58now down to the land. It says praise Yahweh from the
- 15:02earth, all sea monsters and ocean deaths.
- 15:07I am. If I'm remembering correctly.
- 15:11This should be the word, the tenoneem.
- 15:14And you guys at some point will get tired of me mentioning the
- 15:19chaos dragon, but I do not care because it is one of the coolest
- 15:24things in scripture and I absolutely love it.
- 15:28All right, here, let me pull up. Yep, it's the tenoneem.
- 15:31It is the sea monster. It is the sea dragon.
- 15:33This was again mentioned in Genesis 1 often in the ancient
- 15:39Near East. They feared the open oceans and
- 15:42there was almost a personification of chaos and
- 15:46death that they didn't want to go out too far.
- 15:49Because as you know, you read from maps in the 13 or 14
- 15:53hundreds, you'll read the phrase like here be monsters or
- 15:57something like that, that there was, Oh no, there are giant sea
- 16:02serpents out there that are out to destroy everything.
- 16:05They're out there to end life. And here the psalmist says, no,
- 16:09whatever exists, God has made it.
- 16:12And whatever exists has a duty to praise the Lord, to praise
- 16:16Yahweh. And I'm thankful that one day
- 16:19that great sea dragon, that beast that comes, if you will,
- 16:23using the language of revelation, that beast that
- 16:26comes out of the sea, that deceives the nations, that leads
- 16:32them in rebellion against God, that dragon is going to be cast
- 16:37down to hell. And he will serve as a picture
- 16:42of the justice and righteousness and the avenging of God for all
- 16:48eternity. And so even the sea monsters,
- 16:52the sea Dragons, the Tanneneem, and the ocean depths need to
- 16:56praise Yahweh. Verse #8 lightning and hail,
- 16:59snow and cloud, stormy wind that executes His command.
- 17:04Even the weather is supposed to praise the Lord.
- 17:07That when I see the rain, I can be thankful for God's promise
- 17:11that He will never again flood the entire earth.
- 17:14And so I can praise God in the rain and in the lightning.
- 17:17When I see the snow, it reminds me that God has washed my sins
- 17:22white as snow. That in the words of the old
- 17:25Psalm, sin had left a Crimson stain.
- 17:29He washed it white as snow. When I see the cloud, I can
- 17:33remember that God gives shade. That God gives the rain to both
- 17:38the just and the unjust. That He is kind and good to all.
- 17:42When I see the hail, I can remember what he did to Egypt.
- 17:46And remember that just as God punished those that had harmed
- 17:49the children of Israel, so God will harm he who has set himself
- 17:54against my soul because I am on team Jesus.
- 17:58And that I will experience that same joy that Israel did when
- 18:02their enemies and their persecutors and their tormentors
- 18:06were punished, That I will experience that same thing.
- 18:09The stormy wind here that executes his command.
- 18:12When I hear or see or feel the wind, I can be reminded that
- 18:17God's presence, if you will, the wind of God, the Spirit, the the
- 18:22pneuma in the Greek and the ruach in the Old Testament in
- 18:27Hebrew, that God's wind, his Spirit, his presence is with me
- 18:33at all times. And I can remember Pentecost
- 18:36when there was that great joy of that early church being filled
- 18:41with the Spirit's power. And I can remember that today
- 18:43the Holy Spirit lives in me and I can walk in his power.
- 18:47So even the weather can be used for the praise of God.
- 18:51Verse #9 Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all
- 18:56Cedars. Those things that in our world
- 18:58we think of as inanimate, God can use even those to praise his
- 19:04name. You think of mountains and when
- 19:07I, I grew up in Colorado, so being able to climb or to hike
- 19:12different places, as you look from the top and you see all of
- 19:16the land below you, you can't help but go, man, this is a
- 19:21special spot in the Bible. Often mountains are talked about
- 19:25like those places where heaven and earth or the skies and the
- 19:29land are overlapping. And so that's why a lot of the,
- 19:33you know, Pagan peoples, they made altars on high mountains
- 19:39and, and high places. The, the children of God don't
- 19:44have to do that. Like God's just, he is with us
- 19:47just as much in low places as in high places.
- 19:51But even as we, you know, go to different camps and things, we
- 19:54had a men's retreat this past October that was wonderful.
- 19:57And that we did not get all the way to the top of the hill for
- 20:00reasons that you can ask any of the guys that were on that trip.
- 20:03Short of it is I accidentally let us down a trail that was not
- 20:06a trail and we had, you know, some guys with us that were a
- 20:10little bit older in age. And whereas, you know, the 27
- 20:14year old guy can do a lot of, you know, climbing off the path
- 20:20and everything. Not everyone is at that spot in
- 20:23their life. And so I almost did damage to
- 20:27some of my people as we were walking.
- 20:31Where was I going with this? When you are camping and when
- 20:36you are out in nature and you can be able to feel close to
- 20:39God. And you think in those moments
- 20:42of solitude and quiet, far away from the hustle and bustle of
- 20:46the city or the towns or away from electronics.
- 20:49And you just remember, God made all of this, and in His goodness
- 20:54to me, He has made it so that whenever I call on Him, He will
- 20:59answer. Sometimes I just have to be
- 21:02apart. I have to be in solitude enough
- 21:04to be able to hear the voice of God.
- 21:08So there are mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all
- 21:12Cedars. You can think even to Genesis,
- 21:14too, that God gave Adam and Eve all the trees of the garden that
- 21:18they could eat from, that everything that there is to eat
- 21:22here on earth, God has given it to us.
- 21:24And we can be thankful for that #10 wild animals and all cattle,
- 21:29creatures that crawl and flying birds, that all of these amazing
- 21:34creatures. My son absolutely loves animals,
- 21:37loves bugs, loves looking at, you know, encyclopedias and, you
- 21:45know, National Geographic kids shows that that talk about these
- 21:49creatures. You cannot look at these things
- 21:53and not see the handiwork of God in the amazing way that He has
- 21:58put them together. The way that He has caused even
- 22:02the ecosystems of our world to work are just magnificent.
- 22:08And so when I see a squirrel, or when I see a dolphin or a turtle
- 22:14or whatever else the creature might be, I can thank the Lord
- 22:18for his creativity. And I can remember that God made
- 22:21it so that mankind would be the the pinnacle of creation and
- 22:25that all of creation is intended to be put to service by us.
- 22:32That through using the resources that God gave us, we would make
- 22:36this world a better place. And I'm so thankful for many of
- 22:39my friends that do that in a million different ways.
- 22:43I know especially some of those that work in the medical field
- 22:46that you work to better other people's lives through utilizing
- 22:51the the natural bodies that that God has given us through using
- 22:54medicines. I know many of them developed
- 22:57from different plants and roots and and different things that it
- 23:03is so cool what God is used all of mankind to create in 1000
- 23:09different ways to better the lives of people.
- 23:12And I want to encourage you like view whatever your job is as an
- 23:16opportunity to make someone else's life better.
- 23:20Don't just view your job as a way for you to make money.
- 23:23View your job as a way that you say, whatever my job entails
- 23:28today, I'm going to make someone's life better.
- 23:30Whether that's, you know, a customer, if that's the kind of
- 23:33field you work in, whether it's my Co worker, whether it's, you
- 23:36know, I'm doing some sort of research thing.
- 23:38And I recognize that what I do is going to have an impact on
- 23:42other people. And so I am going to live to
- 23:45make other people's lives better.
- 23:47Verse #11 kings of the earth and all peoples, Princess and all
- 23:52judges of the earth, even the kings, Princess, judges, rulers
- 23:57of all shapes and sizes. The courts are supposed to be
- 24:01proclaiming the praise of God. They don't get a pass on it just
- 24:05because they're ruling. They need to be praising God as
- 24:09well. Verse #12 young men as well as
- 24:12young women, old and young together.
- 24:14That is everybody, the young and the old.
- 24:17And if you're like, well, I don't really know if I'm old
- 24:20yet, but I don't feel young. Listen, you got to pick one and
- 24:23then you got to praise the Lord in whatever life stage you are
- 24:26verse #13 let them praise the name of Yahweh for his name
- 24:29alone is exalted. His Majesty covers heaven and
- 24:34earth. He has raised up a horn for his
- 24:37people. This is strength.
- 24:39Someone that would be able to operate in might resulting in
- 24:43praise to all his faithful ones to the Israelites, the people
- 24:46close to him. Hallelujah.
- 24:48And even as we think about now, after what Christ has done, that
- 24:52those people that are close to God are not just those that
- 24:56would be by ancestry Israelites. It is all those that have placed
- 25:02their faith and trust in Jesus. And those people have been
- 25:06brought close by the blood of Christ.
- 25:08He, Jesus, is the horn, the exalted one, the King that we
- 25:13are called to devote our worship and our attention and our love
- 25:18and our obedience to. And why would we praise him?
- 25:21Why would we obey him? Because of all of these
- 25:24wonderful things that he has done and created and made in our
- 25:28world. I hope this episode was an
- 25:30encouragement to you. Would love to hear any insights,
- 25:34thoughts, questions that you have.
- 25:37And I encourage you as well to listen to that song from
- 25:39Sovereign Grace Music, Psalm 148.
- 25:42Praise his name, see you next time.
