- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Finnish with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. Hey everyone. It is good to be here again. Lucas: It really is. We have been talking about directions lately, like turning left or going straight. Luna: Right. Last time we learned how to ask where the square is. That was useful. Lucas: It was. But today we want to talk about something slightly different. Location inside and outside. Luna: Oh, I see. Like being indoors versus outdoors. That makes sense. Lucas: Exactly. In Finnish, this is a very common distinction. Let us start with the most basic one. Luna: Okay. What is the word for inside? Or being inside? Lucas: The phrase is Minä olen sisällä. It means I am inside. Luna: Minä olen sisällä. Let me try that. Minä olen sisällä. Lucas: Perfect. You said it clearly. Minä olen sisällä. Remember that sisällä implies being within an enclosed space. Luna: Got it. Inside. So if I am in my apartment, I use that. Lucas: Yes. And if you want to go outside, you use a verb. The phrase is Mennään ulos. Luna: Mennään ulos. This means let us go outside, right? Lucas: Correct. Mennään ulos. It is a suggestion. Let us go out. Luna: Mennään ulos. Oh, I love that. It sounds so active. Lucas: It does. Especially when it is cold. Speaking of cold, what do we wear? Luna: We need gear. But wait, before we go deep into shopping, I have a quick favor to ask. Lucas: Sure thing. What is up? Luna: If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, listener support keeps us ad-free. You can help by buying me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: That would be amazing. It really helps us keep making episodes like this every week. Luna: Thanks, guys. Now, back to our winter gear. If it is snowing, we might need an umbrella. Lucas: Good point. So, how do we ask if someone has one? The question is Onko sinulla sateenvarjoa? Luna: Onko sinulla sateenvarjoa? Let me repeat that slowly. On-ko si nul la sa teen var joa? Lucas: You nailed it. Onko sinulla sateenvarjoa? It literally means Do you have an umbrella? Luna: That is a long word. Sateenvarjoa. But it rolls off the tongue nicely. Lucas: It does. Now let us add a bit more detail. Where exactly is the umbrella? Luna: Maybe under the table? How do we say under? Lucas: We use the phrase Kissa on pöydän alla. It means The cat is under the table. Luna: Kissa on pöydän alla. Oh, that is cute. Why is the cat under the table? Lucas: Probably hiding from the dog. But notice the structure. Pöydän alla means under the table. Luna: I see. So alla is the key word for under. Kissa on pöydän alla. Lucas: Exactly. And if we look outside, what do we see? Maybe snow on the street. Luna: Yes. The phrase is Lumi on kadulla. Snow is on the street. Lucas: Lumi on kadulla. Kadulla uses the essive case to show location. On the street. Luna: Lumi on kadulla. Okay. So inside, outside, under, on the street. Lucas: You are getting the hang of it. Let us put them together in a little scene. Luna: Okay. I am ready. Hit me with the scenario. Lucas: You are cold. You want to go out. But first, check for your umbrella. Luna: So I say Minä olen sisällä. Then I ask Onko sinulla sateenvarjoa? Lucas: Yes. And if it is snowing heavily, you might see Lumi on kadulla. Luna: And then I say Mennään ulos. Let us go outside. Into the snow. Lucas: Perfect. You are building a whole conversation there. Just remember Minä olen sisällä. Luna: Minä olen sisällä. I will remember that. Being inside feels nice too though. Lucas: It does. Especially when there is Lumi on kadulla. Snow on the street. Luna: True. But eventually, I will want to say Mennään ulos. To get some fresh air. Lucas: And don't forget to check if Kissa on pöydän alla. Before you leave. Luna: I mean, seriously. Check under the table. Kissa on pöydän alla. Lucas: Exactly. And if you need an umbrella, ask Onko sinulla sateenvarjoa? Luna: Onko sinulla sateenvarjoa? Got it. These phrases are so practical. Lucas: They are. Location is everything. Whether you are inside or outside. Luna: Well, I think I am ready to head out. Mennään ulos! Lucas: Wait. Did you check for your umbrella? Onko sinulla sateenvarjoa? Luna: Oh no. I forgot. Minä olen sisällä still. I need to find it first. Lucas: Look under the table. Kissa on pöydän alla. Maybe it is near there. Luna: Found it. Okay. Now I can go. Lumi on kadulla anyway. Lucas: Safe travels. Keep practicing those phrases. Minä olen sisällä. Mennään ulos. Luna: I will. Thanks for teaching me, Lucas. See you next time. Lucas: See you later. Keep learning with Fexingo.
