- 0:01SPEAKER_02: Hey friends, I'm Nikki Smith, your host here at A Heart That Beats for Home, the podcast where we're ditching filters and diving headfirst into the raw beauty of all things home.
- 0:11SPEAKER_02: Now, I am no expert when it comes to this whole parenting and marriage dance.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: I'm simply a gal who's been riding the mom roller coaster for 22 years and a wife still untangling the mystery of it all 25 years after saying I do.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: My goal is to bring you unapologetically messy and boldly genuine conversations about cultivating strong families.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: We're gonna laugh, possibly cry, and straight talk about the joy and chaos that comes within the four walls that we call home.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: No judgment and certainly no perfection.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: Just real talk from my heart, a heart that beats for home.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Let's dive in.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: Hello, friends.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to another week at the podcast.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: So excited to have you here.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: And today we have a super fun conversation.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: You know, sometimes the internet doesn't work the way we want it to, but every once in a while, the algorithms work in our favor.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: And a couple of weeks ago, I was introduced to Lindsay Parks.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: I had never heard her name before and quickly became a fan.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: I clicked over to her Instagram page, started digging deep, found that she has a podcast and started binge listening.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: And here we are today.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: So a real quick background Lindsay is the wife to Eric.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: She's the mom to five kiddos, four boys and one girl.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: Just sent her oldest off to college last year.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: So in a lot of new, exciting, fun stages.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: And she kind of got her start in the internet world, if you will, when she started sharing about a dream home that they were building.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: Her Instagram and online community took off.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: She has a hundred thousand plus followers where she just has a faith-centered lifestyle brand where she shares all things family, food, home life, and recently just had a really big thing happen in their family that caught my attention.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: And that's why I wanted to have a fun conversation with Lindsay today.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: So, Lindsay, thank you so much for being on.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: I'd love for you just to tell us just a little bit about yourself beyond kind of what I just shared.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you for having me.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: I'm really excited to be here.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: So basically, I started an Instagram account just to kind of document our home build, which I think a lot of people do.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: And we had a lot of friends and family that wanted to just kind of follow the process and you know, had a lot of questions.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: And and also with having five kids, people were asking me questions.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: I I get a lot, like, how do you do it all?
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: And mom of lots of kids, we don't do it all.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: We there are a lot of things that we let go.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: But and so I I think the Instagram account was kind of like partly home-build, partly family, and it's kind of morphed into home and family over the years, and it's been really, it's been really sweet.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: And so that's kind of what I've been doing.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: And and then about a year ago, I think my husband and I really felt like there were things that we wanted to share that we didn't really have the opportunity to do so on Instagram because it's short form content and lots of scrolling.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: And so we really felt like the Lord was calling us to start a podcast.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: And so we have the Built for More podcast.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: It's been a really sweet journey for us and a learning experience for sure.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: But it's been really great.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: And part of our background on that is I have the content creation part, and my husband is a physician, but he's also he graduated from seminary, he did online seminary um for it took him five and a half years because we have five kids and he has a full-time job.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: And so his experience with that and his theology and stuff that he's learned in seminary kind of brings that together with my content creation.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: And so our our podcast has kind of been a mashup of all those things.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: And it's it's unusual to have a husband-wife podcast.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: I feel like there's not many like that out there, which was one of the things that drew me to your guys' content and just to kind of dig in there.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: And in, I've been binge listening now.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: I think you have 20 some episodes.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: So I've been trying to catch up and listen and had to laugh at a lot of things at how similar our lives are.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: So you have five kids.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: I'm one of five kids.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: I did not follow in that suit.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: I have three, so I feel like I feel like a slacker, but the five kids, very similar story with your husband and my husband are dating.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: We broke up twice.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: I know you talked about breaking up a couple times.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: So just kind of fun to hear your guys' story.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: But I have to ask in the Instagram.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: So I kind of want to go back and start and then get to really one of the main things we wanted to talk about today.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: When you started with that, that Instagram page and you're just documenting, you know, this was going to be your forever home.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: It's your dream home.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Did you ever anticipate it blowing up like it did?
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: And was there a point where you kind of were like, oh my goodness, this thing is kind of taking off?
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: Is this really what I want?
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: Walk me through that a little bit.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there were, I mean, there were definitely moments that I was like, what is happening?
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: I have no idea what I'm doing.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: And I still, there are still days I definitely feel like I don't know what I'm doing.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: But I feel like when I started sharing more than just home building, I started sharing recipes that I loved and sharing a little bit about our family and how we do family nights or travel with five kids or just, I mean, all kinds of stuff.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: And so I kind of went against what people told me to do on Instagram.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: You know, everybody has an opinion on how you should do content creation and social media.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: And I just I felt like for me, I was more than just home building.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: And I I really wanted to share more than that.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: And and so that I feel like that's kind of where it took off when my my growth was definitely slower than other people in the home niche.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: But I really, I just didn't want to stick to just home building because I just feel like there's more to me than that.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: So that's kind of where it, where it took off.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: And there were moments about about a year and a half ago when I said, okay, either I'm gonna have to really like do this not full time, but commit to doing things that I want to, you know, have on here and maybe put myself out there a little bit more, maybe have some people come in and help me with all the technology stuff that I didn't really understand.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: If I wanted to continue having this account, or maybe this was the end of it, and I really felt like the Lord was saying, that's not all I have for you, and I want you to continue doing this.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: And so it was shortly after that that we decided to do the podcast, and those two things kind of coincide with each other sometimes, and I'm able to share a little bit about that on my regular account, and and it's it's just been it's been a crazy journey for sure.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: I don't know that I would recommend it for people, but there are ups and downs, you know, in anything, but it's it's been fun, it's been good.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: And it's interesting to me, you having, if you've had this now for several years, but the age that you have in your children, how has your family responded or reacted?
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: Has there been boundaries that maybe one kid says, I really don't want to be a part of it, or another kid is all in on it?
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: How have you had to balance that within your family since you're sharing really your whole family's life on social?
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so we always ask and they always know if I'm doing stories.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: There are a few kids that do not like to be on camera, and we have respected that from the beginning.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: And in different seasons, I feel like sometimes they're okay with it and sometimes they're not.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: But every time I always ask because I never want to put my kids in a position where they feel uncomfortable.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, some of their friends follow me, and even some of my college kids' friends follow me, and I don't ever want to overstep my bounds or their boundaries to hurt them or embarrass them in any way.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: But it's funny, once I hit 10,000 followers a couple years ago, my boys, my older two boys, which I have a 17-year-old and a 19-year-old, and one's a senior and one's a sophomore in college.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: I think they thought it was a little weird at first that mom was doing this and it was a little uncomfortable.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: But when I hit 10,000 followers, they were like, mom, like that's a big deal.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: They're kind of cool.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: I know they've been some of my biggest cheerleaders, my kids in my family.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: They've been so sweet.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: My husband is the biggest supporter of me.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: And so it's been really fun.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: But we're always careful about what they want and what they don't.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: So yeah, because you never know what's going to happen.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, out there on the internet, you you put something, similar thing happened in our family.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: I put something up of our youngest son, and before we knew it, it was like at five million views.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: And you kind of have this moment where you're like, oh, you don't expect that.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: And it just kind of happens.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: And just having to navigate that, knowing that God has called you to share about family and faith.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: And that means that it's not just you.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: It's this interesting kind of dynamic.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: But again, it's so cool how even your oldest son, not only is he on your social sum, but even came on your podcast.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: And so I think it is a really cool thing for our kids.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: I know it's like you ask your kids to come and you're like, ooh, thank goodness I can edit.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: But just to hear their real, they're real answered.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: I was laughing.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: It was such a cute episode.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: And just letting letting people hear the kids' voices too, because there's not a lot of places that as adults, we get to hear from other teens because they're talking teen to teen.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: And so it's just a cool experience.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: So I love what you guys are doing.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: So I want to, I want to fast forward to the thing that caught my attention online where algorithms connected us.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: You start this, the the house, the parks built, all about your forever home.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: And it's funny how we use words like that.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: In your mind, you and Eric think this is our forever home.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: This is it.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: This is what we've always wanted.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: And God, in his sense of humor, in it, you know, just all of the ways that he works in our lives, starts to impress upon your husband.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: I think you're supposed to sell your house.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: And I would, I would love for you to kind of just give us what that conversation looked like, how God had to work in your life to get you to that same place.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: It it definitely was unexpected.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: We had talked about it very briefly one time a while ago.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: And and I thought, that's what I don't know where that came from.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: What why would you say that?
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: Like, this is where we're gonna have our grandkids come back to, you know.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, we we just had all kinds of plans for this house.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: And isn't that funny?
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Like, we have plans and then God has other plans.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: But when he brought it up again, I thought, oh wow, he's really serious.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: And I thought he his mindset was, I feel like we are are supposed to be financially free and and work toward being debt-free and having a large home, that's a good part of our budget.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: And so I remember when we first got married, one of the big things that we talked about was being generous with with what he made as his physician's salary, being generous with that to others and traveling with our family.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Those are like two of the big things that we wanted to do.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: And so we have been able to do that, but it's definitely gone down quite a bit when we built this house.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: And so that's kind of where he started.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: And I thought, okay, well, I'll just, you know, I'm in content creation, social media.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: I can just do more and we can pay down debt.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: No big deal.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: And the more I prayed about it and the more he prayed about it, I literally felt the Lord saying to me, that is not what I'm calling you to do.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: I'm not calling you to do more.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: I'm calling you to say yes and to be obedient in this decision.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: And and selling your home is going to be the answer to this, the beginning of what I have for your family.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was a very clear.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: I've never heard the audible voice of God, but it was definitely one of those moments when I thought there is no denying what he just told me.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: So I told Eric that, and I was like, I think you're right.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: I think this is what we're supposed to do.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: And I mean, I knew people were gonna think we were crazy.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: I knew our kids would be upset.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: But honestly, when we started talking to them and telling them about how we had been praying about this, and we really felt like the Lord was telling us, they all came on board pretty quickly.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: And and they had lots of questions, I mean, all kinds of questions and concerns.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: And but the Lord has been really sweet in this and just how all the different ways that we've seen him work in just finding our our next house.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: Like we already know the house we're moving into.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: It's one of my best friend's homes and she's building, so we're moving into the home that she's leaving, and it's still in our same area, so our kids are gonna be close to their friends still, and so it's just been one of these things where God has been so faithful in each step.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it it was not expected at all, but I think God works really cool ways when you least expect it.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what you said there about your initial reaction is well, I can I can do more.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: I can fix this.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: I we don't have to do that scary thing.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: I think specifically for women and those of us that are home raising our children, home becomes like it can become our identity.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: And, you know, obviously you built this thing to be exactly what you wanted and you dreamed of it, and you brought the world along with you as you did it.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: Was there a part of you, and this is just a vulnerable question, you know, there's the I can do more part.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: Is there a part that had uh like a pride that's like, no, I can't put that out there for everybody?
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: Or people are, I know right away you guys said in your podcast when you talked about it, everything's okay.
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: There's not the world just doesn't get it.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Was there a part of you that was really nervous about what people would think?
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, for sure.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: I knew that people were gonna talk.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: People are gonna talk.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: That's what I've learned in social media.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Like people are gonna talk about you and say things that are not true, people that don't even know you.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: And and so you have to just kind of let that go and and know that what you're doing is what God's calling you to, and you have to just be obedient to that and not worry about what other people say.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: But it definitely was one of these things where I thought, okay, Lord, what are you doing here?
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Because this feels very scary at times.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think in our in our podcast episode that we talked about the whole thing, I even had moments where I thought, God, what are you preparing me for?
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Like, is something gonna happen to my husband?
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: You know, when we move, or is something gonna happen to him?
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, it you just your mind goes all different places.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: But if there were moments of for sure feelings of pride where I thought, we love this house and I don't want to leave it.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: But the more, I promise you, the more we prayed about it, the more it was just an overwhelming piece of this is exactly what we're supposed to do.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: And every day since then, it's been just a little bit more peaceful.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I cannot even describe how it changed once we said yes, once we decided to to go through with what we felt like God was calling us to do.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: And and then seeing the little ways that He has been one step ahead of us, you know, the whole time, has been just very encouraging for us and our faith, honestly.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: When, because I want to I want to keep digging into this because I think there's so much goodness in here for listeners, not just those that are maybe being told to sell a house or are being told financially create margin.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: One of my favorite sermon series that I ever listened to was by Andy Stanley.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: And it was, I think, titled The Land of Ur.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: And it was about how naturally we always want the bigger, the better, the brighter, you know, the thinner, the fitter, whatever it is, we're always looking for that land of er.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: And so I think your guys' story, what's so cool about it, and again, I want to follow up with kind of the response that you've gotten in a minute, but we can, everybody can relate to something along those lines.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: And so even for me, listening to your podcast, it makes you think, oh, okay, maybe it's not the house for me.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: Is it, you know, you can go through all these different things.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Is it this, is it that?
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: Is it this with my kids?
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: Is it this with the decisions?
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: And because we focus so much here on the podcast on cultivating strong families, I would love to know for myself and for listeners when you have a spouse, whether it's a wife that's going to a husband or a husband that's coming to a wife that has something really big?
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: Like I'm really sensing that God is saying this.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: It had to be a little scary for Eric to come to you, knowing what this house means to you.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Can you share anything, if you're willing, about how he approached that with you and what your response was that allowed you not to go, or maybe you did initially go.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Are you absolutely out of your mind?
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: No way.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: How was that dynamic in your marriage that you guys were able to give space to each other to get to the point that you were on the same page?
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I will say he is an amazing leader in our family.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: He always has been a faith leader.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: And so I knew that he had been praying about this months before he brought it to me, because I don't think he would have ever brought something to me had he not talked to the Lord about it first, something this big.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: And so, because honestly, when he told me he was wanting to go to seminary, it was the same sort of reaction from me, like, whoa, we we, I mean, we just had twins, our our youngest two are twins.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: And so I was like, We have five kids.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Like, what are what are we doing here?
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Whoa, slow down, you know, and so it was the same kind of thing where I knew at this point when he brought it to me that he had already been praying about it for a long time.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: And so uh my reaction at first was, Are you crazy?
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: No, of course we're not gonna sell our house.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: No, we're not gonna do that.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: We will figure it out.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: We have med school loans, we have the house loan, and you know, just raising five kids.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: We've got one in college, we've got one that's a senior.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: And while we are completely fine financially to stay in this house, we really felt like the Lord was like, that's not the freedom I want you to have.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: I want you to have the peace of being financially free and what that will allow for other people in the process.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: And so it definitely took me a little bit longer to get to the point where I felt like, I mean, it was just it was daily prayer, daily quiet times, daily listening.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: There were, there were mornings that I would take the kids to school or he would take them and I would be in the house and I would just sit here at my kitchen island and I would just cry because I was like, Lord, I don't know what is what are you doing?
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: How many times do we ask God, why is this happening?
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: Because I felt like it was being taken away from me.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: And now I think, I mean, and there were times when I said, I can't, I can't move into a house and drive by this house every day.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: I just can't do that.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: And and God very sweetly came back to me and was like, the house that I have for you is actually right across the street, which is where we used to live.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: We lived in the neighborhood right across the street.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: And we, I mean, we did not want to stay on the side of town.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: I didn't want to see this house every day because I felt like I would be sad.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: But God has been so good to even just like validate my feelings, but also say, what I have for you is better than this.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: The freedom that you're gonna have is so much better than this, and you're gonna see it every day, and it's gonna be okay because we have great memories here, but it's definitely, yeah, it's it's been a process for me, but God has been faithful in every step.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: I love what you said when you said the freedom that you have is not the freedom I want for you.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: I think that's super powerful again, because so often we think we know what freedom looks like, or we think we know what margin in our life looks like.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: And God's like, oh no, you don't, you don't have a clue what kind of freedom I could be giving you or what that's gonna free up in your life.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: So I just think, man, I think there are so many people listening that can think about all different things in their life that maybe they're feeling a a prodding from God and they just keep ignoring it because comfort says, yeah, no, or I'll figure it out.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: And that that full surrender that you guys have walked into is super cool.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: So share a little bit about that story of how then you came about the house that you guys are now gonna be living in.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so and I will say this just to add to that, what we're doing is against everything that the world says is what you're supposed to do.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: And I think social media has created that culture of, like what you said, bigger, better, more, you know.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: And I think in the in the home niche on Instagram, you see that it's very evident.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, home influencers, I'm a home influencer.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: Like that's just you, you're sharing ideas of home building and home decor and all the things, but it's it's more and more and more.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: And what we're doing now is going against that.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: And so it's a little crazy.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: But so when we before we even put our house on the market, so it's been on the market two weeks, we started looking because we were like, we are a large family, we live in a small town.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: There are not gonna be many options for us to be able to fit.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: And we even thought, you know, our kids may have to share rooms.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: They were not excited about that, but but we thought it that may have to happen.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: So we started looking, and everything we we came across was gonna need a lot of renovation just to fit our family.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: We put an offer on a house and we it was gonna require renovation, but we felt like it was it was a good fit.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: And about that night when I went to bed, I felt so sick to my stomach, and I was like, Lord, is this because this is too quick?
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: Like, are we moving too fast?
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: You know, we made this decision.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: Why am I feeling so anxious about this?
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: And the next day we found out that the the owners accepted a different offer.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: And the relief that I felt when I when I found that out, I was like, okay, obviously that was not the house for us because how I had felt physically was a red flag, honestly.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: And so we just moved on.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: And and we told our realtor from the beginning, we are not in a hurry, but we feel like whatever house God has for us, we're gonna know for sure and we're gonna have a peace about it.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: So if something falls through, like we put an offer on something and it falls through, that's okay.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: That means that that was not the house for us, and God has something better.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: And so we we just kept looking, and and my aunt had been here.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: She was at the house and she's a prayer warrior, and she knew the whole story about all the things, and she was praying for our family.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: And I told her, I said, I'm going to have lunch with my friend Holly.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: It was her birthday, and we were going out to lunch.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: And I said, You know what's funny?
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: I said, Holly's gonna be selling her house, and wouldn't it be funny if we just bought her house?
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: And I just kind of brushed it off.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: She lives in the neighborhood that we had moved from, right across the street, and she's actually building a new house with the builder that built our house.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: So all these little things.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: And a few days later, my aunt called me and she said, Lindsay, when you said that about your friend Holly's house, immediately I felt the word home come to mind.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: Like, like that was gonna be your home.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: That's that's your family's home.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: And she said, I didn't want to tell you at first because I didn't want to influence your decision, but I really think you need to lean into that and you need to pray about it.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: And I was like, that's just funny.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Like, okay.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: And so I told my friend Holly, I was like, hey, this is gonna sound really crazy, but we want to come see your house.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: And she was like, That is crazy.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: Are you sure?
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: And because she knew that we didn't want to be on this side of town anymore.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: And and so I took Eric over there and we both, I mean, it was like we both just sensed the peace when we walked in.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: Our kids loved it, and it's close to their friends.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: It's we love being on this side of town.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: Honestly, it's it's all our family has known, and it's a great neighborhood.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: It's full of kids.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: And and so it was one of these things where what I had planned was to be somewhere else.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: And what God had planned was for us to be right there where all of our community is.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: And so it's been, it was, it was a very, it was a big wake-up call for me saying, like, okay, my plans are not the best.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: Obviously, I need to really trust in what God is saying.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: And you mentioned home that your aunt said when she heard the word home.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: How has this just this whole chapter of your life, how has it maybe redefined for you what home really means?
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Honestly, I mean, you know, we built this house, but home is wherever our family is and the community that we have and the people that we go to church with.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: And we built this house to have our kids' friends come over to host our family at Christmas.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: And we definitely still are gonna do those things.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: It's just gonna be in a smaller capacity, you know.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: And so I I think we're just we're excited.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: It almost, once we decided to do this and made this decision, it really can't come fast enough, which is just so crazy.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: So crazy.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, to go from no, I don't want to to be almost being excited.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: And isn't it so kind of the Lord how He lets us go through those stages?
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: Even just you processing through nope, I want to be on a different side of town.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: I don't want to have to see it.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be painful, to just working in your heart to just get you to the point of like, no, it's okay, because you can trust in not only what he did for you to bring you to this house that you're gonna have and how that's starting to feel already like home, but what he's gonna do for a family that's moving into your home.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: I know that you mentioned I in one of the podcasts that when you walked into Holly's house, that not only did you just know it was right, but and you got Terry talking about it on the podcast that you could, you could just sense that the Lord was in that place.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: And just to me, that was so encouraging too, to remember that the four walls that we live in, that is not what will make our kids feel like, oh, that was home.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: Sure, there's pieces about it, but home really is a feeling.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: It's it's a weight that you kind of feel like when my prayer is always when my kids walk in the door, when my husband walks in the door, that they're taking off the backpack of the burdens that are outside this physical house, but it's not because of the physical house or the address, it's because of what's happening inside.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: And I just I love that you guys felt such a peace about just knowing that that was a home that the presence of the Lord was in.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: Is that just something that you feel was a part of that healing process for you to be like, okay, we're gonna be okay?
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, I definitely think, especially as mothers, our job is to create memories for our family and to create just a sense of home, you know, and in in what we do every day and how we greet them, like you said, and and the meals that we prepare, things like that.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, that is that is, I think probably it was more emotional for me to leave this house because of the memories that we already made here and the things that I thought we were gonna, you know, memories we're gonna make here.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: But we can do that anywhere.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: It's not, it's not the space.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: It's just truly who you're who you share it with.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it definitely, my aunt had said she was like, I think you can feel when when a house has been full of Jesus, like you can feel when a home has been loved by the Lord and and prayed over.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: And and that's honestly how we felt when we walked in her house.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which is so cool that God just gave you that too.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Not only was it a friend, it was a friend who you knew loved Jesus and just that sense of peace.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: So, what would you say, Lindsay, to a listener that maybe, maybe they're listening to this and they're like, oh, we're supposed to sell our house.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's already been on their heart.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's something like a job change, or uh it can be so many different things.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: What would be your encouragement to a listener to not push that aside, to not try to mute out that call it whatever you want, voice of the Lord, intuition, just that prodding.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: I believe it's a Holy Spirit prodding.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: Obviously, if you're a believer, what would be your encouragement to that person or that couple?
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so we actually our podcast released today, our episode released today, and we talked about margin and and what we talked a lot about margin in your your schedule and your time and your finances and all that.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: But I think for me, uh a big thing in in this and how we came to be, you know, okay with this and listening to the Lord was having my quiet time in the morning and leading.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Leaving time, leaving room, margin for him to speak to me, not just me to, you know, rattle off everything that I wanted to pray for and the things that I was worried about.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: And but leaving room for the Lord to really like for me to sit and listen in the quiet and just to wait and hear from him.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: And sometimes that's not immediate.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: Sometimes it's something you have to pray for over and over and over again.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: But then sometimes you do have these feelings.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: And I I truly believe that's the Holy Spirit giving you these feelings and thoughts of, okay, maybe this is something I'm supposed to really lean into and really pray about.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: And I think if if you feel like you are pushing something away, God's going to bring it back up again.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: I hate to tell you, but the Lord will keep bringing it back to mind until you, you know, you listen to Him and just really pray about whatever decision it is.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: And obviously, it may not be selling a house for whoever's listening.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: It may just, it may be something very small.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: It may be going to talk to the person you've not wanted to talk to for a long time.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: You know, there's all kinds of ways that God can can use this.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's been pretty cool to see how he he spoke to both of us about this and brought us on the same page.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: And I will say that had Eric come to me, and I shared this on our podcast, had he come to me and he had not prayed about this, and this was just a decision that he had made, I think I could have been very angry about it and resentful toward him, thinking that this was something he wanted to do, and we were not on board.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: Now, that is not in his nature at all.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: I knew that he had been praying about this and really seeking the Lord's wisdom on this, but I think it very easily could have gone the other way had it not been a decision that we both had been praying about.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: So what has surprised you the most about once this story was out there and that post kind of blew up?
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: I know you said you had like 15 times the normal podcast listeners.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Everybody was like, What?
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: The forever home is not the forever home.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: And I think it does just spark an amount of curiosity and I need to know more.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: What has been the overwhelming response?
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: And has that surprised you?
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: Has it encouraged you?
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it the response was crazy.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: First of all, that our video went viral because it's not a type of video that normally would.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: And so I was fully expecting negative comments and negative responses.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: And there were just a few, but definitely not, it was not what I thought it would be at all.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Everybody was very encouraging.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: But more than anything, there were people that had been here five or 10 years ago and had made the same decision and now are debt-free.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: And then people that were thinking about the same exact situation, either they were wanting to sell their home or, you know, change jobs or whatever.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: It was, it was one of these things where they thought, oh my goodness, you gave me the inspiration to actually like look into this and see if this is something that our family could do.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: Or, you know, we want to be financially free.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: How did you know?
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Like, how did you know that the Lord was selling you this?
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: And so it has given us such an opportunity to speak about hearing from the Lord and speak about being obedient even when it's hard.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: Because I do think God is gonna bless our obedience, whatever that looks like, whether we're able to bless others in certain ways.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, even just our time, not having a house this size and having a smaller home is gonna give us more time to not be keeping it up all the time.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna have more time to be able to do other things that could potentially bless others.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: And so there's just so many different ways.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: And I mean, everybody has been so encouraging.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: And some of the the texts that we've gotten from friends have been really surprising too, just not about selling the house, but about people in their faith and seeking the Lord again after not being obedient to the Lord in a while.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: And so that's been super sweet, super sweet.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: That's so cool.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: And just how you you don't realize when you, I'm sure when you and Eric were sitting down having these conversations, you never thought about the ripple effect that that could have and how that is really how obedience works so often is that our obedience is an instrument to be used to allow other people to experience the same kind of freedom that you guys are are talking about and desiring and just the cool ripple effect that that can have.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: So I'm so glad.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: Well, you didn't really have a choice because your platform is about the house the parks built.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: So you can't like just secretly not in there anymore.
- 34:48SPEAKER_02: That's one of the unfortunate things about when you kind of have a name for yourself on social media is that there's not a lot of secrets that you can keep.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: But maybe the whole reason that God has built that platform and has told you to keep going is because that this chapter is one that's gonna allow a lot of other people to follow in suit in obedience and just make a drastic impact for the kingdom.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: So I love that we've been able to talk about that.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: I feel like I can't let you go though, until I ask you just a couple of basic mom questions.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: Because mama of five, again, our listeners here primarily are 25 to 45-year-old women who are in the throes of parenting.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: What would you say to mamas who are in the stage of littles, of just the toddlers and the diapers and the exhaustion?
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: What would be your word of encouragement to that stage of parenting for those young moms?
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: So our when we had our littles, oh my goodness, there were a lot of years of those, but we lived away from family for part of it.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: And during those years, I would absolutely say find your community of similar families, moms that have littles, and share in the the ups and the downs, the highs and lows.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: Even share, I mean, we shared cooking duties with some of our neighbors and just and babysitting.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: Like we would we would swap off, you know, keeping each other's kids when we needed a break or whatever, run to the store.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: So find your community and because sometimes people don't have family close by, and it gets very hard when you are exhausted and it's just never ending.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: And then I think when they're a little older, get to know the parents of your kids' friends and know who they are hanging out with.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: And because honestly, the older my kids got, the less you are talking to parents, the less you're in those moments where you're hanging out having play dates, right?
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: Because they're older and it's more sports and stuff, and you might see them at sports.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: But those parents, if you have questions about things, most likely they're asking the same things, they're wanting to know the same things.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: And don't feel weird calling another parent and saying, Hey, my my kid's gonna be at your house Friday night.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Did you know this?
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: You know, like you can still talk to other parents.
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: And so I think my encouragement is just have a great community.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: And if you don't have one, reach out to somebody because most likely they're needing a community too.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: And then what has been the most surprising to you about parenting high school and college?
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: I know that the world, you know, everything that we hear from the outside is, oh my gosh, teenagers and this and that.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: And I love, I love high school and college-age kids.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: Having older high school and young adult children has blessed me in ways I did not know was going to exist.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: What would you say has been the biggest kind of surprise blessing or just exciting stage for you in now having kids that are a little bit older?
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: Gosh, you said it perfect, though, because I feel like that is what you hear before your kids hit teenage years, or you know, maybe it's an older generation that's saying, Teenagers are so terrible.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: Like the teen years are awful.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: Those have been some of my hardest, most challenging years, but also some of my sweetest.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: It changes the relationship that you have when they hit a certain age.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: You know, they're a little more independent.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: They may have a job or a girlfriend or want to be with friends all the time.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: And it really changes you start to see them for somebody different and who God is preparing them to be.
- 38:37SPEAKER_01: And that's pretty cool, just seeing, you know, what they're into.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: And I think for me, I have loved the teenage years.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: Now, it has been very hard.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: And if you've listened to our podcast, we have been through a lot with the teenagers in our home.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: But I would not trade that for anything because what they've been through and what we have learned through that is that that shapes them who for who they're going to be as an adult.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: And that has given us the opportunity to speak into other families' lives that have gone through some of the things, the same things that we have.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: And that's been really sweet how God has used that in different ways.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: But I love, love, love the teenage years.
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's just a different kind of it's just you're still the parent.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: You're still, I'm still the boss here, but there's just a sweeter relationship.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: And it's so important that in those younger years, you're you are leaning in and you are building relationships.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: I just saw a reel that said it was something along the lines of to the level that you enjoy motherhood is the level that your children will enjoy childhood.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: And I thought, wow, that's that's a that's a stinger, right?
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: And so for those mamas that are in the throes of early parenting, it does feel exhausting.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: They are long days.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: You feel sometimes like a short order cook and a maid.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: But when you lean into that relationship, the the benefit that you get in having kids that will sit and talk and you can have good, hard conversations, even in those stages where you're like, I have raised you better than the decision you just made.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: But also, how doesn't that teach you so much about God's grace for you?
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: I know every time my kids do something, and we've been lucky that there hasn't been like we haven't had to bail anybody out of jail or anything yet.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: But you know, just even when you think, why would you have made that decision?
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: Like just to have like, okay, thank you, God, for the reminder that I'm sure you must think that about me all the time.
- 40:35SPEAKER_02: It's just these crazy things, right?
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: So it is it's a sweet stage, a sweet stage of refining us as mamas too.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Okay, last question.
- 40:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: Five kids, busy life, showing up on social.
- 40:49SPEAKER_02: Your husband's a physician, decides to get, you know, his theology degree, be going to seminary, lots of stuff happening, sending kids to college.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: How do you and Eric keep your marriage a priority?
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: In different seasons, it's been different answers, honestly.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: We every year we go away on a trip, just the two of us, and that has changed over the years as far as like destination and length, you know, how long we can be away from the kids and who has childcare and all that stuff.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: But he's off on Wednesdays, and so that has become kind of our date day, I guess you could say, where he, I mean, he almost looks forward to Wednesdays more than the weekend because it is just kind of like a breath of fresh air where he can just relax and we can catch up on things, go run errands, go somewhere fun for the day, like a new city.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: But what we've really enjoyed the last over the last year is taking our dogs for a walk in the evening, just the two of us.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: Sometimes one of the kids will come with us and it's fun, but it gives us a chance to catch up on our day, talk about anything we need to talk about with the kids or the house or a podcast.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: And it's been really sweet.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: Date nights are harder to come by during sports seasons because it's just it has been wild.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: The semester has been wild, but absolutely making sure that we have time for each other.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: I think too, when you say that about those walks, I heard somebody say we have a business meeting every night when we walk and what you can accomplish in getting through the mundane things that we need to talk about, but then also where you get to get a little deeper.
- 42:31SPEAKER_02: And I have to believe that the investment that you guys have made, I would put money on it, is part of why you were able to come through this season of making really big decisions because you've been investing already.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: And so I hope that listeners, as you've listened, that you have just taken nuggets away from Lindsay and Eric's story, just about the way that they have been obedient to listen, even if it took time.
- 42:56SPEAKER_02: I think there's so much wisdom too in the being slow to come to somebody.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: I think even Eric just taking those months to pray is an encouragement to a lot of us that we can sometimes just feel something and act and just that obedience to be still and listen.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: And just the example that you're not only leaving for all of the people.
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, when you think that you have 106,000 people I saw today that are paying attention, maybe, you know, it's a percentage of that that are paying active attention, but that obedience, but most importantly, that you have the audience of the five kids in your house that are watching so intently.
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: And in a world where we get caught up on what the world thinks of us, to know that these decisions that the kids might think are a big decision, they won't really understand until they're on their own and they'll look back and say, wow, that was that was a really big thing that mom and dad did.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: And I think that will encourage your children more than you guys can even imagine.
- 43:55SPEAKER_02: So, Lindsay, it has been so fun to catch up with you.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: I'm excited to keep watching online to see what happens.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: I hope that the next house that the parks build, that you'll share that with us and that we'll get to see that transition.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: Is that part of the plan to kind of show us what's going to happen in the next home?
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we are doing a little bit of renovation, you know, in the next house, in our friend's house that we're buying, just a little bit.
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: And it's nothing necessary, but just something that we wanted to do for our family.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: So we'll be sharing a little bit of that and still just home and family stuff, a little bit of recipes and travel and just all the things that I love and faith and our podcasts and stuff.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: So yeah, thank you.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me today.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: It's been great.
- 44:38SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 44:38SPEAKER_02: And listeners, we'll be sure to link in the show notes all of the different places that you can find and follow Lindsay and the podcast and just be along for the journey.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: So we are so grateful for just this time to get some of your wisdom and just something to think about as we go throughout the week.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: So, Lindsay, thank you so much for being here and gracing our listeners with your time.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: Until next week, friends, if this has been an episode that encourages you, maybe spurred something in you, share it with a spouse, maybe share it with a friend or a family member.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: Share it on socials.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: That is how we get into the algorithm so that more people can hear about our mission of cultivating strong families.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: So until next week, friends, take care.
