- 2:00Speaker 1: but pay attention to my Facebook page and you'll find
- 2:03Speaker 1: out what school she's going to be going to Somebody
- 2:06Speaker 1: who's very special to me has a birthday today. So
- 2:09Speaker 1: happy birthday, LaKendrick. And then on top of that, next week,
- 2:15Speaker 1: Wednesday at this time, my baby, oh no, next week, Wednesday,
- 2:19Speaker 1: my baby girl will be graduating from the fifth grade.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Summer readings is getting started. The only bad things that
- 2:26Speaker 1: are going on right now is these swarmers, okay? So
- 2:30Speaker 1: y'all know what I'm talking about if you live in Charleston.
- 2:33Speaker 1: They're here about a week and they'll be gone. But
- 2:37Speaker 1: I have a new author. So y'all know it's Tuesday.
- 2:40Speaker 1: So a new author and a new book. So it
- 2:48Speaker 1: is nothing like being a daddy's girl. And I am
- 2:53Speaker 1: one that can say I am a daddy's girl. I
- 2:58Speaker 1: remember being four, five, six years And down here in Charleston,
- 3:05Speaker 1: we used to have the black baseball teams, okay? So
- 3:09Speaker 1: every Saturday and every Sunday, we would go to the park, right?
- 3:13Speaker 1: And all the guys, all the fathers would have their
- 3:16Speaker 1: kids on the stands, sitting down, and they would be
- 3:20Speaker 1: playing with their teams. I love this. I remember my
- 3:24Speaker 1: dad coming to pick me up on Saturday afternoons, walking
- 3:28Speaker 1: down to the park, and I had me a pickle.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I had me A chili beer and a hot dog.
- 3:36Speaker 1: And I was good. My dad was out there pitching
- 3:39Speaker 1: or hitting. He would look back at me, give me
- 3:42Speaker 1: a wink. And I was good to go. But this
- 3:47Speaker 1: book and this author is going to explain how searching
- 3:52Speaker 1: for a father's love is a journey from brokenness, healing,
- 3:56Speaker 1: and grace. So you guys, I would love to bring
- 3:59Speaker 1: up author Michelle Briggs. Come on up, girly.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Come on up.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Hey.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Hey, Patrice.
- 4:10Speaker 1: How are you? I am good, Mama. How are you?
- 4:14Speaker 1: I am well.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I'm so happy to be here. Me too.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I am excited. I am excited. Now, I know about you,
- 4:24Speaker 1: but how about you tell the audience about Miss Michelle Briggs?
- 4:29Speaker 1: All right, everybody.
- 4:30Speaker 2: My name is Michelle Briggs, as you can see. I
- 4:33Speaker 2: am an author.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I am a new author. I currently live in Texas.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I have lived around in many different places. I was
- 4:42Speaker 1: born and raised in Chicago. And I have lived in
- 4:46Speaker 1: other states, many other states. And life brought me to Texas.
- 4:52Speaker 1: So my journey to Texas was a little different because
- 4:56Speaker 1: I went through a divorce after a 20-year marriage. And
- 5:00Speaker 1: I decided that I wanted to do something different with
- 5:02Speaker 1: my life. My youngest child had turned 18. She went
- 5:06Speaker 1: off to college in Virginia. I came back home and said, OK, Michelle,
- 5:09Speaker 1: what do you.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Want to do?
- 5:10Speaker 1: Because I have been a mother and I have been
- 5:13Speaker 1: a wife and I've never been me. And so at
- 5:16Speaker 1: that time, I didn't know how to make that decision.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I didn't even know how to even start. So I
- 5:21Speaker 1: went online one night and I said, let me look
- 5:23Speaker 1: up the top 10 cheapest cities to live in the U.S.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And Temple, Texas was one of them. So I came
- 5:30Speaker 1: to Temple, Texas in September, Labor Day weekend, 2015, checked
- 5:35Speaker 1: it out. Oh, they had a Walmart, right? They had
- 5:37Speaker 1: a Sam's Club, small town, but they had just the
- 5:41Speaker 1: necessities that I needed. So I said, okay, I think
- 5:44Speaker 1: I can live there. Went back home and started applying
- 5:46Speaker 1: for jobs and the doors began to open. I received
- 5:49Speaker 1: the job, came back for the interview. And then the
- 5:53Speaker 1: time I was like, okay, I'm sort of iffy. I
- 5:55Speaker 1: don't know if this is something I really want to
- 5:56Speaker 1: do because I've never been on my own. I've been married.
- 5:59Speaker 1: You know, I met my husband. I met him at
- 6:02Speaker 1: the age of 17 and we were divorced at age 41.
- 6:05Speaker 1: So I didn't know anything else. I didn't know anyone else.
- 6:08Speaker 1: And on top of that, he was a pastor. So
- 6:10Speaker 1: I was a pastor's wife at the time. So it
- 6:13Speaker 1: was a journey. It was a real good and slash challenging.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I don't want to say difficult. It was a challenging journey.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And so in the meantime, I packed up what I
- 6:24Speaker 1: could fit. I got the job, got a place to live.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I packed up what I could fit in my Equinox
- 6:30Speaker 1: and I drove to Texas. And I've been living in
- 6:32Speaker 1: Texas for 10 years. And so just this past year
- 6:37Speaker 1: or so, I've been feeling a nudge that it's time
- 6:40Speaker 1: for me to tell my story. And I learned that
- 6:42Speaker 1: you can't really tell your story really like you need
- 6:45Speaker 1: to until you become in a place of healing. Because
- 6:48Speaker 1: a lot of times triggers, you know, sometimes we have
- 6:50Speaker 1: scars there. And sometimes if you touch, it's tender underneath
- 6:53Speaker 1: the skin or you have a scar there and you
- 6:56Speaker 1: look at it and it brings back the memories. But
- 6:59Speaker 1: I've learned that when you come to a place of healing,
- 7:02Speaker 1: Those scars are the battle scars. They're there to show
- 7:06Speaker 1: that you came through the battle, but you survived it.
- 7:09Speaker 1: And so in my book, I talk a lot about
- 7:12Speaker 1: my survival mode, but I also try to go to
- 7:15Speaker 1: that thriving mode. Because life is just not meant for
- 7:18Speaker 1: us just to survive. Life is meant for us to thrive.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Because I'm a spiritual person, so I'm going to talk spiritual.
- 7:25Speaker 1: So the Bible tells us in John 10, he says,
- 7:29Speaker 1: God says, the thief coming out to steal, kill, and destroy.
- 7:34Speaker 1: He said, but I come that you might have life
- 7:37Speaker 1: and have it more abundantly. So in that, Patrice, it's
- 7:41Speaker 1: like people think we have to die and go to
- 7:43Speaker 1: heaven to have that abundant life. But God was talking
- 7:45Speaker 1: about he wanted us to have abundant life right here
- 7:49Speaker 1: on earth. Right? And sometimes people think, oh, I'm suffering
- 7:54Speaker 1: in my marriage and I'm going through this and I'm
- 7:56Speaker 1: going through that. But God intended for us to have
- 7:59Speaker 1: abundant life.
- 8:01Speaker 2: And it's up to us.
- 8:03Speaker 1: It's up to us to obtain that abundant life. A
- 8:06Speaker 1: lot of people don't see it like that. I mean, OK, so, OK,
- 8:10Speaker 1: y'all know everybody out there that I was born and
- 8:14Speaker 1: raised in church. There's this one song I just never could. Well, actually, too.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Shake the Devil Off. I truly never did understand that song.
- 8:25Speaker 1: But then, this is the one that really used to
- 8:28Speaker 1: get me. Y'all know BET, Late at Night. I'm coming
- 8:33Speaker 1: up on the rough side of the mountain. I was like, why?
- 8:40Speaker 1: I understand there's going to be trials and tribulations, but
- 8:43Speaker 1: why do we have to choose to go up the
- 8:46Speaker 1: rough side of the mountain? We don't have to climb
- 8:50Speaker 1: the mountain at all. He told us to speak to
- 8:52Speaker 1: the mountain. Just speak to it. You don't even have
- 8:55Speaker 1: to climb the mountain. And tell the mountain to be
- 8:57Speaker 1: thou removed and be cast into the midst of the
- 9:00Speaker 1: sea and shall not doubt in your heart but believe
- 9:02Speaker 1: that whatever thing you desire when you pray, you receive
- 9:05Speaker 1: them and you.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Shall have them. So why are you climbing when all
- 9:09Speaker 2: you got to do is speak?
- 9:10Speaker 1: Waste your energy. See, you got me because I can
- 9:14Speaker 1: see them right now on TV. Wasted energy. That's all
- 9:23Speaker 1: used to get on my nerve. I just never understood, like,
- 9:26Speaker 1: why are we going up? Why are you choosing to
- 9:30Speaker 1: go up the rough side of the mountain? Yes, there's
- 9:33Speaker 1: going to be trial and tribulation, but how I tell
- 9:36Speaker 1: friends of mine, If you're always in a trial and
- 9:40Speaker 1: tribulation and you never have a time of peace, then
- 9:45Speaker 1: you might need to evaluate yourself. Yeah, you have problems. Yeah. So,
- 9:56Speaker 1: we understand that you wrote this book to tell your story. Right.
- 10:01Speaker 1: What part of your story were you wanting to tell?
- 10:04Speaker 1: What are you wanting your readers to take away from
- 10:07Speaker 1: their book? I wanted my readers to take away a
- 10:10Speaker 1: place of healing, that they're not alone and that God
- 10:14Speaker 1: is a God of restoration. To know that you can
- 10:18Speaker 1: be restored. You can find that place of peace, that
- 10:21Speaker 1: you can find that place of happiness and joy. And
- 10:25Speaker 1: so I really want my readers to know that, hey,
- 10:29Speaker 1: you might have gone through some things like we all
- 10:31Speaker 1: have a story, right? Your story is not mine. My
- 10:34Speaker 1: story is not the next person. However, in the midst
- 10:36Speaker 1: of our stories, I want people to know that there
- 10:40Speaker 1: is in your brokenness, there is a wholeness and a
- 10:44Speaker 1: wellness that God wants to give us.
- 10:46Speaker 2: And that's what I was talking about with that abundant life.
- 10:49Speaker 1: And, you know, and I wanted to share this with
- 10:51Speaker 1: you because, you know, sometimes we feel like, um, but
- 10:56Speaker 1: like nobody else is going through this, but me, right?
- 11:00Speaker 1: Nobody else. I'm the only one that going through this.
- 11:03Speaker 1: And so many, many years ago, Patrice, my godmother, mother, mama, Lisa,
- 11:07Speaker 1: if you're listening, hey, my godmother told me you got
- 11:12Speaker 1: somebody's deliverance inside of You need to tell your story.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Somebody's waiting to hear your story. This was many, many
- 11:19Speaker 1: years ago, many, many years ago. And so she told
- 11:23Speaker 1: me that and I sat on it for so long.
- 11:25Speaker 1: You know why I sat on it? Because I wasn't healed.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And so I didn't feel like I should tell this story.
- 11:32Speaker 1: because I'm still.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Going through the process, right?
- 11:34Speaker 1: And sometimes our.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Victory is in the process.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Our victory is while we're going through that struggle or
- 11:41Speaker 1: whatever we're going through.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So sometimes we have to go ahead and tell the story.
- 11:45Speaker 1: So in little groups or little side piece of one-on-one,
- 11:48Speaker 1: I would tell my story to different individuals that I
- 11:51Speaker 1: felt led to. However, I felt like I have a
- 11:54Speaker 1: bigger platform now. I feel like it's time for me
- 11:56Speaker 1: to share my story And because, you know, you heard
- 12:00Speaker 1: the saying, you see the glory, but you don't know
- 12:02Speaker 1: the story. So I want them to see my glory,
- 12:05Speaker 1: but I do want them to know the story. OK,
- 12:08Speaker 1: so that's what I want. I want to share that
- 12:09Speaker 1: story so they can see where I am now. A
- 12:11Speaker 1: lot of people ask me, how did you do it?
- 12:14Speaker 2: How did you move with just what you fit in
- 12:16Speaker 2: your car?
- 12:16Speaker 1: If you look at my house right now, you couldn't
- 12:18Speaker 1: tell that I moved in here, what I fit in
- 12:20Speaker 1: the equinox, because God has restored me with so much
- 12:24Speaker 1: abundance that I don't have. I don't have nothing to
- 12:26Speaker 1: worry about. I got more than enough. So I just
- 12:30Speaker 1: realized that knowing that you see the glory of But
- 12:34Speaker 1: I want to be able to tell the story. So
- 12:36Speaker 1: I just know that this, I'm thankful for your platform,
- 12:39Speaker 1: being able to be here on SC Book Gals. I'm
- 12:43Speaker 1: so thankful for the platform. But I also know that
- 12:47Speaker 1: my platform is going to get bigger. And I want
- 12:50Speaker 1: to take it to a stage. I want my book
- 12:53Speaker 1: to be my leverage. A lot of times people write
- 12:56Speaker 1: a whole lot of books out there. Nobody's opened it.
- 13:00Speaker 1: And so I have a mentor who told me, Michelle,
- 13:03Speaker 1: look at your Amazon cart. And I was like, okay,
- 13:06Speaker 1: how many things you got in the Amazon cart you
- 13:08Speaker 1: done put on your wish list? You got it sitting
- 13:10Speaker 1: there and you haven't bought it yet. And how long
- 13:12Speaker 1: has it been there? Ooh. Right? And so she said,
- 13:17Speaker 1: your book is probably sitting inside somebody's Amazon cart. And
- 13:24Speaker 1: they just have not purchased it yet. So I want
- 13:28Speaker 1: to take it to a further. I want to do
- 13:31Speaker 1: just not the books. I want to have healing lunches, lunches.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I want to be able to have retreats. I want
- 13:39Speaker 1: this to go global. I really want this to be
- 13:41Speaker 1: able to share. I want to share my story on stages.
- 13:45Speaker 1: As I told you before we even started, I love
- 13:47Speaker 1: to talk. Can't you tell? Yeah.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I love to talk.
- 13:51Speaker 1: So I just, I love to share. I want to
- 13:53Speaker 1: share it because I want to see, I don't want
- 13:55Speaker 1: to go on this trip and this journey by myself,
- 13:57Speaker 1: this journey of the brokenness and the healing and the grace.
- 14:01Speaker 1: I want to be able to share this healing grace
- 14:03Speaker 1: of what God did for me and what he, because
- 14:06Speaker 1: there's no secret what he can do. What he's done
- 14:08Speaker 1: for others, he'll do for others. So what he's done
- 14:11Speaker 1: for me, he'll do for other people. So I just
- 14:13Speaker 1: want to be able to share my story with them.
- 14:17Speaker 1: And we're going to bring, up your book. In the synopsis,
- 14:21Speaker 1: it says, through a blend of memoir and reflective storytelling,
- 14:27Speaker 1: Michelle Briggs shares the journey of a daughter shaped by abandonment,
- 14:32Speaker 1: broken relationships, and deep emotional wounds. When her parents reconnected
- 14:37Speaker 1: after years of separation, she dares to hope that healing
- 14:41Speaker 1: will finally arrive. But even as an adult, she discovers
- 14:45Speaker 1: that a longing to be known by her father and
- 14:48Speaker 1: still remains you guys i'm about to bring up the
- 14:52Speaker 1: book cover so you can see this cover look at
- 14:55Speaker 1: this oh my god the cover speaks so much what
- 15:02Speaker 1: did you want your readers to see and to think
- 15:07Speaker 1: when they see your book cover I wanted them to see,
- 15:12Speaker 1: and I had this idea when I did the book cover,
- 15:15Speaker 1: because it starts, my first chapter is talking about waiting
- 15:18Speaker 1: on the porch. And so as a little girl, I
- 15:21Speaker 1: remember my brother and I getting dressed, my dad promising
- 15:25Speaker 1: to pick us up, and my mom sat us outside
- 15:28Speaker 1: on the porch, and she sat there while we waited
- 15:29Speaker 1: and waited and waited and waited and waited, and he
- 15:32Speaker 1: never showed. And so I remember that day, and that
- 15:36Speaker 1: little girl sitting on that porch is... me waiting for
- 15:41Speaker 1: my dad to show up. And in the background, you
- 15:46Speaker 1: see a silhouette of an older woman in the rocking chair.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Still on the porch waiting.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Because even though I grew up and I was mature,
- 15:55Speaker 1: I was grown, I still was waiting for my dad
- 15:59Speaker 1: to show up. So in that whole thing, I want
- 16:04Speaker 1: to just give you a little synopsis of what I
- 16:08Speaker 1: was meaning by that. Because my dad did show up.
- 16:11Speaker 1: He did come back into my life. He remarried my
- 16:15Speaker 1: mom after 16 years of divorce. He came back into
- 16:19Speaker 1: my life. But I never really had that father-daughter relationship
- 16:24Speaker 1: that I always longed for. And so even in the
- 16:27Speaker 1: midst of him coming back, even though he was there,
- 16:30Speaker 1: he wasn't there. And so that thing that I longed
- 16:33Speaker 1: for for years and years and years to be loved
- 16:35Speaker 1: by my father, what it means to jump on my
- 16:38Speaker 1: daddy's lap, what it means to lay my head on
- 16:40Speaker 1: my dad, what it meant to just be able to
- 16:42Speaker 1: share who I was and what I brought to my family.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I didn't have that opportunity totally. So that was one
- 16:51Speaker 1: of the things that I talk about is that journey
- 16:54Speaker 1: of just being able to have that father. And so
- 16:57Speaker 1: realizing that a father's love a father guides us into
- 17:01Speaker 1: our choices as women, as young girls, of who we marry, right?
- 17:06Speaker 1: And so I ended up marrying a man that was
- 17:09Speaker 1: basically like my father almost. Oh, wow. That is true
- 17:17Speaker 1: because they always say that a girl's first love is
- 17:21Speaker 1: her father. They always say that. So I'm going to digress,
- 17:28Speaker 1: you guys, because I have to This is on my mind.
- 17:31Speaker 1: So I was, y'all know I surf Facebook, and I
- 17:35Speaker 1: was doing that tonight, getting ready for the show. And
- 17:39Speaker 1: there was a father who went to his daughter's kindergarten
- 17:45Speaker 1: graduation here in South Carolina. Matter of fact, it was Columbia,
- 17:49Speaker 1: South Carolina. And the mother, because sometimes, ladies, I have
- 17:56Speaker 1: to admit, it be us, we be the one. But
- 18:02Speaker 1: this father showed up. And he's always showing up. The
- 18:08Speaker 1: principal acknowledged that. But the mom was so bitter that
- 18:13Speaker 1: she did not let the daughter graduate. Wow. Took her
- 18:19Speaker 1: out of the ceremony. Wow. So sometimes, mothers, we have to...
- 18:28Speaker 1: and even single mothers, and I'm going to speak because
- 18:32Speaker 1: I am a single mother now, we have to open
- 18:36Speaker 1: that door to let the fathers come in. How or
- 18:44Speaker 1: even have you addressed this in your book? Like if
- 18:49Speaker 1: that is the case, I mean, how does the healing work?
- 18:57Speaker 1: How would healing come if it's from the mother's side?
- 19:06Speaker 1: Like how would that little girl heal? So one thing
- 19:10Speaker 1: I can say, Patrice, is my mother was my strong.
- 19:17Speaker 1: She was my strength. And she still is my strength.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Even going through everything she's gone through. My dad is
- 19:24Speaker 1: now in prison. he's serving a sentence. And my mom
- 19:29Speaker 1: is still married to him. She supports him. She's there
- 19:32Speaker 1: for him. And my mom has shown me the tenacity
- 19:36Speaker 1: and the strength of a woman. And so I really
- 19:39Speaker 1: have a lot of that loyalty and that strength that
- 19:43Speaker 1: I get from my mom. My mom never kept my
- 19:46Speaker 1: brother and I away from our dad. My mom never
- 19:49Speaker 1: said that we couldn't see our dad. And my mom
- 19:52Speaker 1: was always that bridge that helped bridge the relationship between
- 19:57Speaker 1: my dad and her children, because my mom had two
- 20:00Speaker 1: children by him.
- 20:02Speaker 2: The thing is, As I remember, sometimes I would go
- 20:05Speaker 2: to her and talk to her.
- 20:06Speaker 1: She said, well, go talk to your daddy. Now, they
- 20:08Speaker 1: got remarried when I was 29 years old. Right. I
- 20:11Speaker 1: was 29 years old and I had already been married
- 20:13Speaker 1: eight years and had four children of my own. Right.
- 20:15Speaker 1: But the little girl inside of me longed for that
- 20:19Speaker 1: father's love. And so I felt like more so my
- 20:23Speaker 1: dad was more of a father to my children than
- 20:25Speaker 1: a grandfather. Right. than he was to me. And so
- 20:28Speaker 1: there was times where I had a little jealousy there
- 20:30Speaker 1: because he was spending the time with my children and
- 20:33Speaker 1: he was doing things for my children that I didn't
- 20:36Speaker 1: get a chance to experience. And so that was a little,
- 20:39Speaker 1: it had a little, made me feel a little some
- 20:41Speaker 1: type of way, right?
- 20:42Speaker 2: And so I had to heal from that part because I'm.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Like, you know, I would tell my kids, that's my daddy,
- 20:48Speaker 1: you know, and he's treating y'all more like y'all his
- 20:51Speaker 1: children than, you know, me. I'm his biological daughter. You know,
- 20:57Speaker 1: if it wasn't for me, y'all wouldn't be here. So
- 21:00Speaker 1: my whole thing is I wanted to make sure that
- 21:04Speaker 1: my mom, I mean, awesome woman. My mom is an
- 21:07Speaker 1: awesome woman and I love her. And so, Mommy, if
- 21:10Speaker 1: you're watching, I love you. But she taught me so much.
- 21:14Speaker 1: She taught me so, so much of how to be strong.
- 21:18Speaker 1: And so I have a new book coming out. We
- 21:20Speaker 1: didn't even talk about this earlier. But in a few weeks,
- 21:22Speaker 1: I have a new book coming out. It's called Loving
- 21:24Speaker 1: Me While Becoming. And that transition, I talk about that
- 21:28Speaker 1: because we as women tend to go through transitional moments.
- 21:32Speaker 2: And we are our worst enemies. We are our worst critics.
- 21:35Speaker 1: And so while we're becoming who God has created and
- 21:38Speaker 1: predestined us to be, we.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Got to continue to love ourselves. We can't say, oh,
- 21:43Speaker 2: I'm fat.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Oh, I'm ugly. My hair is short. I don't look good.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Love you while becoming.
- 21:50Speaker 1: All right.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Can you stop coming in front of my front door
- 21:52Speaker 2: with that one?
- 21:53Speaker 1: Because I'm going to need you to stop sweeping in
- 21:57Speaker 1: front of my door. I have a tendency of doing that,
- 22:02Speaker 1: you know. Oh, I hate this. I hate that. And
- 22:04Speaker 1: I have somebody that speaks into me. But then sometimes
- 22:08Speaker 1: I even block them off. Like, look, I ain't even
- 22:10Speaker 1: trying to hear you right now. But you are so
- 22:13Speaker 1: right now. You know, you got to tell me when
- 22:15Speaker 1: it's next book coming out. We can talk about that.
- 22:17Speaker 1: I will do. You have placed so much of what
- 22:26Speaker 1: we need, especially in the African-American community. If the younger
- 22:33Speaker 1: you was sitting in front of you right now, what
- 22:36Speaker 1: would you say to her? I would probably tell the
- 22:43Speaker 1: younger me, stop looking for what's already inside of you. Oh, snap.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Mic drop. I looked and I jumped in and out
- 22:53Speaker 1: of relationships until I got married. And then after my marriage,
- 22:56Speaker 1: I did. I jumped in and out of relationships. even
- 23:00Speaker 1: encounter some situations where I was in a relationship with
- 23:03Speaker 1: a person who I later found out was on crack,
- 23:05Speaker 1: who took me down and through there and thinking at
- 23:08Speaker 1: 50 years old, I'm experiencing this. I should know better.
- 23:14Speaker 1: I should be bigger than this. And that's what I'm
- 23:15Speaker 1: talking about. Loving me while becoming, because we're going to
- 23:18Speaker 1: make some decisions. And just because you make decisions, that
- 23:21Speaker 1: is not your end. It's not the end. I always
- 23:25Speaker 1: say there's nothing that I can't get into that God
- 23:28Speaker 1: and me can't get out of. So we can get
- 23:31Speaker 1: into a lot of things. We put ourselves into a
- 23:34Speaker 1: lot of things, but it's going to take God and
- 23:36Speaker 1: your participation to get you out of it. Okay. So yeah,
- 23:41Speaker 1: I just really, I really, I would tell myself because
- 23:44Speaker 1: the love was already inside me because I love people
- 23:47Speaker 1: and I love hard, honey.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I love hard when I love you.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I love you. And I love her. So it was
- 23:56Speaker 1: already inside of me, but I couldn't see that inside
- 23:58Speaker 1: of me. I couldn't see that love inside of me
- 24:02Speaker 1: because I wanted it from the external.
- 24:05Speaker 2: And the person that I wanted from really was my dad.
- 24:08Speaker 2: But you know what?
- 24:09Speaker 1: All along, God was there. I was saved, and I
- 24:12Speaker 1: got sanctified and baptized in the Holy Spirit at the
- 24:15Speaker 1: age of nine years old. And God was my everything.
- 24:19Speaker 1: I love the Lord, and I still do. But I
- 24:23Speaker 1: was missing that human connection. And sometimes we miss the
- 24:28Speaker 1: human connection, whether it be from our children, from our parents,
- 24:33Speaker 1: from our siblings, from whoever. We miss the human connection.
- 24:39Speaker 1: And then I would tell myself, girl, look inside of yourself.
- 24:43Speaker 1: You're exuding what you want. And a lot of times
- 24:47Speaker 1: what we put out, but sometimes we're so thirsty, we're
- 24:51Speaker 1: looking for it so bad that we don't even see
- 24:54Speaker 1: the signs and the signals of people who are not
- 24:56Speaker 1: even good for us. Because we're searching. When I talk
- 25:01Speaker 1: about searching for our Father's love, you're searching. That means
- 25:04Speaker 1: you're here, there. You're going places. You're being with people,
- 25:08Speaker 1: building relationships that you shouldn't have. You're looking for the
- 25:11Speaker 1: love that you wanted from a physical Father. But our
- 25:14Speaker 1: Heavenly Father has been there the whole time. And that's
- 25:17Speaker 1: what I talk about at the end of the book,
- 25:19Speaker 1: is what our Heavenly Father provides. He provided the love
- 25:22Speaker 1: that I was searching for all along. Okay, y'all. She
- 25:28Speaker 1: done brought it home. I can't... Listen, you done brought
- 25:34Speaker 1: it home. Spread the table. We got the chicken. We
- 25:39Speaker 1: got the ham over here. You done bring it all.
- 25:42Speaker 1: But I gotta give you the apple pie. All right.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Let's get the dessert going, girl. Remember we talked behind
- 25:49Speaker 1: the scene and I told you I had those fun questions? Yes, yes.
- 25:56Speaker 1: All right. You are now in our time. So, Lifetime
- 26:06Speaker 1: is on the line, right? Lifetime said, you know, we
- 26:10Speaker 1: love your book. We need this book. This book is needed.
- 26:14Speaker 1: It needs to be on film. We got to find
- 26:17Speaker 1: the correct actress to play you as a young child.
- 26:23Speaker 1: What child star would you give the opportunity to play
- 26:29Speaker 1: you and why? Child star. I thought you was going
- 26:35Speaker 1: to ask me which person I would be and I
- 26:38Speaker 1: would pick one of my daughters because they both act
- 26:41Speaker 1: like me in a way that they look like me.
- 26:43Speaker 1: But if I was to go to a child... No,
- 26:45Speaker 1: hold on, hold on.
- 26:46Speaker 2: We can do that.
- 26:47Speaker 1: We can do your daughters, okay? And what are their names?
- 26:51Speaker 2: Courtney and Davida.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Hey, y'all. If y'all watching. Hi, Courtney.
- 26:56Speaker 2: And Demita.
- 26:57Speaker 1: All right. So we got Courtney and Demita. They're about
- 26:59Speaker 1: to make their debut. We're about to make this a
- 27:02Speaker 1: family thing. But we need a man to play your dad.
- 27:09Speaker 1: So that's what we're going to get the star power from.
- 27:13Speaker 1: What male gospel artist would you give the opportunity to
- 27:19Speaker 1: play your dad?
- 27:26Speaker 2: It'd probably be a quartet singer.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Courtney said, hey, Ma. Hey, Pocus.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Wow. I'm trying to think.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Oh, please, Mama. I'm so proud of you. Aw. Look
- 27:48Speaker 1: at Davida. Aw. I'm trying to think of a probably
- 27:55Speaker 1: a quartet singer my dad loved to sing and he
- 27:59Speaker 1: was a preacher so I'm trying to think of okay
- 28:05Speaker 1: so one of my favorites is Rance Allen I don't
- 28:10Speaker 1: know if it would be Rance Allen I would think
- 28:14Speaker 1: of Harvey Watkins maybe a little bit Harvey Watkins from
- 28:19Speaker 1: the Kenton Spirituals Ooh, you took it back then, girl.
- 28:24Speaker 1: You took it. Ooh, you took it back. Okay. So
- 28:29Speaker 1: we got Harvey. His name is Harvey. What's the last name? Watkins.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Harvey Watkins. And we have Davida and Courtney. But you
- 28:40Speaker 1: know every good movie has a soundtrack. What song would
- 28:46Speaker 1: be the soundtrack to your healings? God is trying to
- 28:53Speaker 1: tell you something. And why do you choose that song?
- 29:02Speaker 1: Because God has been trying to tell me something for
- 29:05Speaker 1: so many years. I have been running. I have been
- 29:09Speaker 1: hiding and not that he's been trying to, because God
- 29:11Speaker 1: don't try to do anything. He has been telling me something.
- 29:15Speaker 1: And so I have been turning a deaf ear. And so, um,
- 29:20Speaker 1: if I had listened earlier, I may not have had
- 29:23Speaker 1: as many stumbling blocks along the way. And so I
- 29:29Speaker 1: really believe that that would be the song, you know,
- 29:31Speaker 1: for both of us, I think for my dad and myself,
- 29:34Speaker 1: that God has been trying to tell us something in our,
- 29:38Speaker 1: both our healing journeys, because we all say hurt people,
- 29:41Speaker 1: hurt people. Right. And some things my dad did is
- 29:45Speaker 1: either because he didn't know any better or because he
- 29:47Speaker 1: was hurting himself and he didn't understand. And I look
- 29:50Speaker 1: at that also as is with my ex-husband is that
- 29:54Speaker 1: the fact that maybe he was having his own battles
- 29:56Speaker 1: and his own, you know, situations and he didn't know
- 29:59Speaker 1: how to heal himself. And so therefore he couldn't heal.
- 30:02Speaker 1: You can't heal somebody that you're not really healed yourself.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Right.
- 30:06Speaker 1: We're bleeding on people. We're bleeding. We're hurting and we're
- 30:10Speaker 1: bleeding on people. We're we've got scars that hasn't been healed.
- 30:14Speaker 1: We're contaminating people's spirits. Even in the church, you know,
- 30:18Speaker 1: it's people out there who are standing over pulpits who
- 30:22Speaker 1: are not healed. And we see that every day on
- 30:24Speaker 1: social media. We see it in all these different platforms.
- 30:27Speaker 1: People are talking about the church and talking about how
- 30:30Speaker 1: this person did. And this was said in the church
- 30:33Speaker 1: and close the doors and the money and this and that.
- 30:36Speaker 1: And so people are broken and they are bleeding. And
- 30:41Speaker 1: so healing is a very is a very important. Pivotal
- 30:45Speaker 1: point where we can really see God and really see
- 30:49Speaker 1: that he is telling and hear what he's telling us.
- 30:53Speaker 1: You know what? That's true. There's a lot of hurt
- 30:55Speaker 1: people in the church. It's crazy to say that, but
- 31:01Speaker 1: there is.
- 31:04Speaker 2: I know I perpetrated for many years.
- 31:07Speaker 1: I sat there with a smile on my face like
- 31:09Speaker 1: the happy first lady and I was miserable as, excuse
- 31:12Speaker 1: my language. Hell, I was miserable. Girl, look at here.
- 31:18Speaker 1: You ain't preaching to the choir. I'm sitting next to you.
- 31:20Speaker 1: I'm the alto. You're the soprano. We with that together. So,
- 31:26Speaker 1: and I just want y'all to know, I was very
- 31:28Speaker 1: upset that they did not put God's trying to tell
- 31:31Speaker 1: you something in the new color purple. That was just
- 31:34Speaker 1: so disappointing. In the most recent movie? Yes. That just
- 31:40Speaker 1: hurt my feelings. Okay, so now we have The movie,
- 31:44Speaker 1: the soundtrack, the actors, everything is great.
- 31:49Speaker 2: All right.
- 31:50Speaker 1: You know what? You won a Dove Award. Uh-oh. They
- 31:56Speaker 1: loved it. You won a Dove Award. Who would you
- 32:02Speaker 1: like to thank? First and foremost, I'd like to thank God.
- 32:12Speaker 1: I would like to thank my mother and my father.
- 32:16Speaker 1: And I would like to thank my children. And I
- 32:18Speaker 1: would even like to thank my husband, my ex-husband. And
- 32:21Speaker 1: so all of that has made me into who I
- 32:24Speaker 1: am today. Honey, if it had not been for those
- 32:29Speaker 1: struggles today, As Jaqueline Carr said, I would never know
- 32:34Speaker 1: how much I've grown, what I can do. I don't
- 32:37Speaker 1: even know my own strength sometimes. I surprise myself sometimes. So, yes,
- 32:42Speaker 1: I would like to thank everyone for supporting me, supporting
- 32:46Speaker 1: my book, and just being there for me. You know,
- 32:49Speaker 1: there's a lot of people who I have spoken to,
- 32:53Speaker 1: talked to, shared my story.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Some people I've had to actually.
- 33:00Speaker 1: just vent to them. Even as recently as today, I've
- 33:03Speaker 1: had to vent. So I am very thankful and grateful
- 33:07Speaker 1: for people that God has placed in my life. I'm
- 33:10Speaker 1: very grateful. There you go. So before you leave, you
- 33:14Speaker 1: have to give us the rundown. How we can follow
- 33:17Speaker 1: you on social media, how we can grab your book.
- 33:22Speaker 1: When the next one is coming out, just go ahead
- 33:24Speaker 1: and give us the rundown. Okay, sure. So you can
- 33:27Speaker 1: follow me on Journey to Heal on Facebook. I'm also
- 33:32Speaker 1: Journey to Heal on TikTok. I have my personal page,
- 33:36Speaker 1: Michelle Briggs. You can also go to my website. It's MichelleBriggsTheAuthor.com.
- 33:46Speaker 1: You can also email me at MichelleB at JourneyToHeal, LLC.com.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Okay. And so I'm looking forward to, I'm even, I
- 33:59Speaker 2: forgot to tell you, I'm a life coach.
- 34:01Speaker 1: I've got certified as a life coach. And so I'm
- 34:03Speaker 1: doing some coaching gigs. So you'll see that coming out soon.
- 34:07Speaker 1: So I'm willing to share personally one-on-one or group. We
- 34:10Speaker 1: will get into that more. And so I'll be coming
- 34:13Speaker 1: out with some luncheons and just being able to share
- 34:16Speaker 1: with people. So please keep.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Me in mind.
- 34:18Speaker 1: My new book will be out.
- 34:20Speaker 2: I'm actually, my publisher, you know, I didn't even know
- 34:23Speaker 2: how to write a book and be honest.
- 34:25Speaker 1: I know how to write a book. I know what
- 34:27Speaker 1: to do. I know. So what I ended up doing,
- 34:30Speaker 1: I ended up searching online and I have a publisher.
- 34:34Speaker 2: It's Owl Publishers.
- 34:36Speaker 1: And so they published my first book and they've also
- 34:39Speaker 1: publishing the second book. They're waiting on me to finish
- 34:41Speaker 1: doing my edits. And thank you guys for being so
- 34:43Speaker 1: patient with me. So I'm working on the edits for
- 34:46Speaker 1: my second book. Remember, and I'll post everything when it
- 34:50Speaker 1: comes out. I am working on a capture page so
- 34:54Speaker 1: you can get some things and I'll be offering some free, um,
- 34:57Speaker 1: things on my capture page, which is also called a
- 34:59Speaker 1: landing page. So, um, we looking out for some more
- 35:03Speaker 1: things for me from me. Well, thank you for giving us.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Cause if you guys look at the bottom of the screen,
- 35:11Speaker 1: you see all the information scrolling. I always tell you,
- 35:14Speaker 1: if you want to support an author, you know, follow
- 35:18Speaker 1: them on their social media. Um, follow them on their webpage. I,
- 35:24Speaker 1: matter of fact, read a book today. The book had,
- 35:29Speaker 1: the very end of the book had me in a chokehold.
- 35:32Speaker 1: I inboxed that author. I was like, what were you thinking?
- 35:35Speaker 1: She was like, you read it? I was like, yeah.
- 35:37Speaker 1: She was like, oh my God, I love when people
- 35:39Speaker 1: do this. This is encouragement for them, okay? Encourage them, like, hey,
- 35:44Speaker 1: I've read your book. I really like this. Some authors
- 35:48Speaker 1: just love that, okay? So, you know, I'm going to
- 35:52Speaker 1: read your book. I have made a vow to read
- 35:57Speaker 1: almost all the books that I interview. That's 52 books, y'all.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Y'all pray for us. But I like doing it because
- 36:11Speaker 1: it switches up my genres. Because if you know me,
- 36:16Speaker 1: y'all know what type of book I read. And we
- 36:19Speaker 1: got the lovely past the lady here, so I can't
- 36:22Speaker 1: talk about scandalous books I read, but you know. But Ms. Michelle,
- 36:30Speaker 1: thank you. I thank you for not even knowing that
- 36:35Speaker 1: you put some nuggets in me and helped me, gave
- 36:40Speaker 1: me some flashbacks. And even now that I am 46
- 36:44Speaker 1: years old and my dad, I want to say he's
- 36:46Speaker 1: like 68. Makes me want to go back and rekindle
- 36:52Speaker 1: because we did lose each other when I got older
- 36:54Speaker 1: and once my mom died. And this will be a
- 36:57Speaker 1: great way for me to rekindle what I had with
- 37:01Speaker 1: my dad. So I am going to take some words
- 37:07Speaker 1: of encouragement from you. Yes. And my healing journey, but
- 37:11Speaker 1: the healing journey that I think me and him would
- 37:13Speaker 1: need to do together. So I thank you for being
- 37:16Speaker 1: with me tonight. Thank you. I appreciate your platform. And
- 37:19Speaker 1: thank you to everybody that's watching. Thank you. Thank you, everybody.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Miss Davida and Courtney. Yes. All right, y'all. I need
- 37:31Speaker 1: y'all autographs. When Lifetime call y'all for the movie, y'all
- 37:35Speaker 1: remember y'all see me autograph. And y'all get those books
- 37:39Speaker 1: at your Amazon shopping cart and pay for them books
- 37:42Speaker 1: and read my book, please. Oh, Miss Teresa, please don't.
- 37:46Speaker 1: You really smart girl. Miss Teresa's last I do. I can't.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Put it like this. Miss Teresa, I can't even say
- 37:53Speaker 1: the book that I've read today. It might get me
- 37:58Speaker 1: in trouble. But I love to read. Hey, Teresa. That's
- 38:03Speaker 1: my friend from Little Rock.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Hi, Miss Teresa from Arkansas?
- 38:08Speaker 1: Yes. Y'all, I didn't know... Black people were in Arkansas.
- 38:14Speaker 1: It's a whole lot of them out there. I have
- 38:17Speaker 1: children in Arkansas. My husband, Pastor Chris Briggs, he's in Arkansas.
- 38:23Speaker 1: My daughter, Courtney, is in Arkansas. I have a lot
- 38:27Speaker 1: of people in Arkansas. I guess I'm just an old
- 38:31Speaker 1: South girl. And when I hear states like Utah, I'm like,
- 38:35Speaker 1: people actually live in those states? Yes. Charge it to
- 38:39Speaker 1: my head, not my heart. Ms. Michelle, I will continue
- 38:45Speaker 1: to follow you in anything we can do here at
- 38:48Speaker 1: SC Book Yard in France. Remember, the journey doesn't stop
- 38:52Speaker 1: here with us. Okay? I want to thank you guys
- 38:56Speaker 1: for being with me tonight. It is a Tuesday night. Lately,
- 39:03Speaker 1: I've been, you know, before we...
