Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Everybody, welcome into this edition of The Checko Daily. I
- 0:12am Andrew Decheco, and I hope everyone is enjoying our
- 0:15position preview series on the Inside the Birds platform. On Monday,
- 0:20we took a look at the interior defensive line. On
- 0:24Tuesday we talked about the edge rusher group, and then
- 0:27on Wednesday, of course, yesterday we really delved into the
- 0:32linebacker room. But today, and those who followed along with
- 0:35my coverage over the years, you already know that I
- 0:38love to evaluate defensive backs and talk about them, and
- 0:41we're going to right now, and that is the safety
- 0:45room that we're going to sort of.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Really chronicle here.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And they have a number of different players that I
- 0:51find to be intriguing and some that I think can
- 0:55fulfill certain roles on this Eagles team. But let's first
- 1:01talk about Red Blanket Ship, who headlines this group tremendous
- 1:05story of development. Joined the Eagles in twenty twenty two
- 1:08as a rookie free agent, flashed in the preseason, earned
- 1:11all of his opportunities that he's gotten, and he's become
- 1:15one of the best safeties in the NFL. I don't
- 1:18think that he gets the proper respect or recognition around
- 1:21the NFL or even locally.
- 1:23Speaker 2: To a degree. But there's a lot of things that
- 1:25he does well.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Obviously, he's tough, he's a Simon sound But what isn't
- 1:31discussed and what is hard to measure on the in
- 1:34the box score, is his football intelligence and what he
- 1:37brings from an acumen standpoint like that, and he plays
- 1:42such a pivotal role. At least last season he did
- 1:44so did CJ. Gardner Johnson, by the way, in helping
- 1:49on the field Cooper dejen and Quinna Mitchell two rookie corners.
- 1:54So a lot of what he had to do I
- 1:58don't think is really taken into account. But he's productive,
- 2:02he finds the football. A lot of his interceptions tend
- 2:04to look the same. But this year, the big question
- 2:07is how will he fare when he doesn't have CJ.
- 2:11Gardner Johnson playing beside him. We saw the best of
- 2:14Red Blankenship in twenty twenty two when they repair it up.
- 2:18We saw it in twenty twenty four, and I think
- 2:20a lot of that's overblown. And that's not to take
- 2:22away from what CJ. Gardner Johnson brought to this defense.
- 2:26The toughness, the swagger, the ball production, and you can
- 2:30make the argument that having a player like that, the
- 2:32teams have to account for and you can move them
- 2:34around a little bit at East. Some of the pressure
- 2:37off of Reed Blankenship from having it to do too much,
- 2:40from having to feel like you have to be everywhere
- 2:42at all times. I think to suggest that is to
- 2:45take away from what Reed Blankenship has been able to accomplish. Now,
- 2:49does he have the same other worldly quality that Gardner
- 2:51Johnson has, like the range and the versatility. No, I'm
- 2:56not suggesting that, But this is a player who's earned
- 2:59his place at the safety group, and I am curious
- 3:02to see how the pairing opposite him really starts to
- 3:06play out, because let's start to unravel this. The player
- 3:10that I'm expecting to win this job is rookie second round.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Pick Drew mccuba.
- 3:15Speaker 1: So, Drew leccuba was drafted in the second round by
- 3:18the Eagles. I thought that was an outstanding selection when
- 3:21you look at what he brings in terms of the
- 3:23football intelligence. I would argue that Drew mccuba is one
- 3:26of the smartest defensive players in this draft class. You
- 3:29can see it by watching him on tape and how
- 3:31he moves and how team and how his defensive coordinators
- 3:34have utilized in that Clemson and Texas. He has a
- 3:37nose for the football five interceptions last season, and when
- 3:40you look at what he brings from a skill set standpoint,
- 3:43to me, it really reflects what vic Vangio tends to
- 3:47look for in his safeties. And if you kind of
- 3:50want to look at it in terms of CJ. Gardner Johnson, well,
- 3:53he embodies similar qualities. So I think that I'm not
- 3:58so much worried about the learning curve or anything like that.
- 4:01I think he's going to be somebody who becomes a
- 4:03factor early and maybe separates himself in training camp. But
- 4:07he is the front runner in my eyes to become
- 4:10the starting safety opposite Red Blanket Ship. Obviously there's going
- 4:13to be competition there, but you don't draft a player
- 4:16in the second round if you don't have a clear
- 4:19cut plan form and barring something to the effect of
- 4:22maybe he's not grasping something or maybe an injury, it's
- 4:27hard for me to foresee a scenario where he isn't
- 4:30the Eagles starting safety opposite Blanket Ship. But let's start
- 4:33to talk about some of the other players that are
- 4:35going to be in the mix. Third year Savedy Sidney Brown.
- 4:40Sidney Brown's another player that I think is sort of
- 4:43polarizing in the sense that you saw him play a
- 4:46little bit as a rookie and it kind of left
- 4:49you wanting more because you see the big playability, the
- 4:51ninety nine yard interception return against the Arizona Cardinals, the hits,
- 4:56the way that he flows to the football with urgency.
- 4:59That's infection and it's contagious. And I mean that in
- 5:02a good way, because he's somebody who could be a
- 5:05spark on the defensive side. He also brings some attitude
- 5:09and tenacity to the position that I don't think should
- 5:12be sort of just cast aside. But there are other
- 5:15elements that he's going to have to shore up if
- 5:18he wants to be a starting safety in this Vic
- 5:21Fangio defense. And first and foremost, he has to become
- 5:25a more disciplined, a more disciplined player, a little bit
- 5:27more fundamentally sound. He flies around, he plays with his
- 5:30hair on fire. Sometimes that leads to feaster famine type
- 5:34of play, poor pursuits to the football, and if we've
- 5:37learned anything from Vic Fanjo, he prioritizes players that are
- 5:41assignment sound and that play within the confines of his defense.
- 5:45Speaker 2: There's not a lot of guesswork.
- 5:46Speaker 1: So for Sidney Brown, in my opinion, anyway to really
- 5:50be able to make that leap into a starting role,
- 5:52he's going to have to alter the way that he
- 5:53plays the game. Now, the other part of that is
- 5:56I often hear while you know, Tristan McCollum played over him,
- 6:00so he's clearly not in Fangio's favor or anything like that.
- 6:05Let's take a step back for a second, because Sidney
- 6:08Brown suffered a knee injury in the season finale of
- 6:10the twenty twenty three season that deprived him pretty much
- 6:13of a full off season. It did deprive him of
- 6:15an off season, and most of his training camp experience
- 6:19was spent getting mental reps. And as I've outlined before
- 6:24and many others have as well, there's a considerable amount
- 6:27of responsibilities placed on safeties and linebackers in this system.
- 6:32So Sidney Brown wasn't cleared and didn't return to the
- 6:34roster and was participating in actual games until October. So
- 6:39it's fair to say that he was behind the eight ball.
- 6:41It's really tough to get those physical in game reps
- 6:46and learn the system on the fly, pretty much learning
- 6:49on the job when all you've had is mental reps
- 6:52to go off of. So now things have changed and
- 6:54he has the full off season, it's also worth doing
- 6:57that Fanjo did wasn't there when the Eagles drafted Sydney Brown,
- 7:00but now Brown is afforded a full offseason, he knows
- 7:03what's expected.
- 7:04Speaker 2: He's worked with safety's coach Joe Casper.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And he has an idea of how he can fit
- 7:10and really sort of earn his place in this lineup.
- 7:14So he should not be discounted in any regard. I
- 7:17still think that Drew mccouba has the upper hand, but
- 7:19Sidney Brown will also have something to say about that.
- 7:22That should be a two man battle that I'm most
- 7:24looking forward to seeing in training camp. But Fanjo also
- 7:28mentioned another player in third year safety Tristan McCollum. So,
- 7:34Tristan McCollum is a player who I've talked a lot about.
- 7:36I think very highly of Tristan. He's worked his way
- 7:39up the ladder the hard way, which I have a
- 7:42tremendous amount of respect for. But more beyond that, this
- 7:46is a lengthy player He's carved out a role on
- 7:49special teams, but when his number was called upon on defense,
- 7:53he made plays. I look at the Ravens game as
- 7:56the best example of how he was able to kind
- 7:59of be plugged in mid game and the defense didn't really.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Miss a beat.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Now, he should have had that interception in that game.
- 8:04Tristan will be the first one to tell you that,
- 8:06and his teammates let him know about it as well.
- 8:09But I also think that he's a player that is
- 8:11as simon sound. He doesn't give you maybe the big
- 8:14playability of a Macouba or a Sydney Brown, certainly, but
- 8:18there's something to be said for a player that there's
- 8:20not a lot of guesswork. You know exactly what you're
- 8:22getting when he's there. Fangio likes him, the Eagles have
- 8:26invested years in his development, and I do think that
- 8:29he's going to have another big summer. Last year he
- 8:31really seemed to take off. He grasped the system very quickly,
- 8:35in my opinion, and that is another element that really.
- 8:38Speaker 2: We should hone in on a little bit.
- 8:40Speaker 1: He is someone who has a very high football IQ,
- 8:44and as I've discussed, that goes a long way in
- 8:47endearing yourself to Vic Fangio. So he's probably the third
- 8:51in that group that I just mentioned, But Fangio mentioned
- 8:55that he's going to be in the mix. So that
- 8:57tells you right there how the Eagle and Vic Fangio
- 9:01feel about Tristan McCollum. And I think that he at
- 9:05worst will slide in as the fourth safety on this team,
- 9:10but I don't think that it's fully appreciated the road
- 9:14that he's taken to get to this point and.
- 9:16Speaker 2: How the organization views him.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Tremendously hard worker and somebody that I think is going
- 9:21to be a force to be reckon with this summer.
- 9:25There's another player that I've talked a lot about and
- 9:28I think you're gonna hear his name a little bit
- 9:30more this summer, and that is second year safety Andre
- 9:33sam So. Andre sam was draft. He was a rookie
- 9:38for agent signing of Eagles last year out of LSU.
- 9:40He was LSU's defensive player of the year. Bounced around
- 9:43quite a bit in college. He started at McNee State,
- 9:46he went to Marshall, he flirted with Tulane for a
- 9:49little bit a brief point, and then he ended up
- 9:52at LSU. This is someone who I think while he
- 9:56doesn't have the prototypical size, he throws his body around.
- 10:00He's physical and he's smart. So he was elevated for
- 10:04one game last season. He spent the entire season on
- 10:06the Eagles practice squad.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Last year.
- 10:08Speaker 1: C Gardner Johnson was essentially a little brother to Andre.
- 10:13They trained at the same place Lab Strength and Performance
- 10:15in New Orleans, and there were points where Gardner Johnson
- 10:19brought him over for Thanksgiving and really showed him the
- 10:22ropes of how to be a pro. So you have
- 10:24to think that Andre is able to take that knowledge
- 10:26and move it forward in year two. So he's already
- 10:29coming into the Eagles in his second season with that knowledge,
- 10:33but also familiarity with safety's coach Joe Casper and Vic Fangio.
- 10:37I think he can be a force on special teams,
- 10:39and I also think that he might be able to
- 10:42elbow his way into the safety conversation on the active roster.
- 10:46Speaker 2: But he's going to have to be consistent.
- 10:48Speaker 1: He saw some first team reps during Otias and the
- 10:51mandatory mini camp that we were able to see. I
- 10:53imagine that you're going to continue to see the safety's
- 10:55rotated in but Andre Sam's going to be a name
- 10:58that you're going to want to remember. This is a
- 11:01player that I've gotten asked about quite a bit, and
- 11:03that is Lewis Seene, who was drafted in the first
- 11:06round by the Vikings in twenty twenty two, suffered some injuries.
- 11:09He really hasn't played meaningful football in three years. He
- 11:13spent last year on the Buffalo Bills practice squad because
- 11:16he did not make the Vikings out of training camp.
- 11:19He played in a handful of games, I believe for
- 11:22the Bills last season. But there's something to be said
- 11:24for a player who has all that ability, and he
- 11:27does have a bit of a hulking build. He's tall
- 11:30but lanky for a safety. So if you get to
- 11:33see him in training camp or in the preseason, I
- 11:35think you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. But he
- 11:37moves okay for that type of build. But this is
- 11:41somebody that he's not ahead of Tristan McCollum right now.
- 11:44He's not ahead of Andre Sam right now. Does he
- 11:46have a lot of ability? Of course, is there something
- 11:50to be said for rejoining a lot of your teammates
- 11:52that you spent your collegiate years with. Of course, that
- 11:55should help build that camaraderie and help ease that transition.
- 11:59And did sign Lewis scene last season around the playoffs
- 12:04to the fifty three to ensure that he was onboarded
- 12:07for the whole offseason process and giving him a fair
- 12:10opportunity to make the roster or at least make a
- 12:12dent and make a serious push. Am I looking forward
- 12:15to seeing what he's able to do. Yes, But oddly enough,
- 12:18I've probably gotten more questions about Lewis seen than any
- 12:22of any of the players that are on the quote
- 12:24unquote bubble this year. He's going to have an opportunity.
- 12:28He does have that pedigree, so we'll have to see
- 12:31how he fits in and if he's able to kind of,
- 12:33you know, hit the ground running this summer in training camp.
- 12:38Rounding out the group is maxon Hook, a rookie free
- 12:41agent signing out at Toledo. He was roommates with Quinnaon
- 12:45Mitchell Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell at Toledo. I like his ability.
- 12:49He was very productive in college. I think he can
- 12:51really thrive immediately on special teams.
- 12:54Speaker 2: He does have an uphill.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Battle in trying to make this roster there's a number
- 12:58of players there that I think are or definitively above him,
- 13:02and I don't know that he'll be able to do
- 13:03enough to stave them off. But we've also seen Red
- 13:06Blankenship sort of emerge seemingly out of nowhere and sees
- 13:10a roster spot. So you never want to count anybody out,
- 13:13especially before training camp. But as we look at things
- 13:15right now, I think it's fair to say that he's
- 13:19kind of on the outside looking in. He seems to
- 13:21me like more of a developmental project. I think if
- 13:24you're able to hone his skills and make him an
- 13:26even more well rounded player, he'll probably have a better
- 13:30opportunity next summer. But again, another smart player who's played
- 13:34a lot of football, So I think that vic Vangaiel
- 13:37will probably take a liking to Max and Hook fairly early.
- 13:41And if he's able to carve out a role on
- 13:43special teams and maybe outshine someone like an Andre Sam, well,
- 13:48then you're gonna have a legitimate competition here. But right now,
- 13:51the way that I see it, he's a little bit
- 13:53further down in the pecking order. But as you can see,
- 13:56there's a number of quality safeties here that have difference
- 14:00skill sets and have different stories. I think Andre Sam,
- 14:04for example, has one of the best stories on the
- 14:06Eagles roster.
- 14:07Speaker 2: I won't get into all of that. I've talked about.
- 14:09Speaker 1: It in pieces at different points, but if you get
- 14:12a chance, read up on Andre Sam because that's a
- 14:15player that I think a lot of fans find easy
- 14:18to root for. So yeah, that really sums up the
- 14:23Eagles safety room. And as you can see, there's a
- 14:25lot of different types of players and there's a lot
- 14:27of competition at stake and I can't wait to see
- 14:31how this all plays out. Hope everybody has a good
- 14:34Fourth of July. Tomorrow we're going to get into the
- 14:38cornerback room a number of different names. There is a
- 14:41marquee position battle that we're going to get into as
- 14:44well and highlight how both of those players really stack
- 14:48up against one another.
- 14:50Speaker 2: This has been to check O daily.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I am Andrew Decheco, and I'll talk to everybody tomorrow
- 15:01Speaker 2: And
