- 1:23Speaker 2: warning in terms of sound quality, particularly with Dragnet. I
- 1:28Speaker 2: feel like most of the Dragnet episodes, we've gotten a
- 1:32Speaker 2: lot better versions, higher sound quality. This one really does
- 1:38Speaker 2: feel like the sort of quality I was dealing with
- 1:41Speaker 2: 19 years ago when we started the old-time Dragnet program.
- 1:46Speaker 2: but still very listenable. Here, from June 19th, 1952, it's
- 1:52Speaker 2: The Big Jewels.
- 1:53Speaker 3: The story you are about to hear is true. The
- 1:56Speaker 3: names have been changed.
- 1:57Speaker 4: To protect the innocent. Dear Detective Sergeant, you're assigned a
- 2:10Speaker 4: narcotics detail. As any supply of high-grade narcotics is finding
- 2:14Speaker 4: its way into your.
- 2:15Speaker 3: City, For two months, you've been trying to run down
- 2:17Speaker 3: the source. The first real break finally comes. Your job?
- 2:22Speaker 3: Check it out.
- 2:30Speaker 5: The documented drama of an actual crime. For the next
- 2:33Speaker 5: 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 2:37Speaker 5: you will travel step by step on the side of
- 2:39Speaker 5: the law through an actual case transcribed from official police files.
- 2:42Speaker 5: From beginning to end, from crime to punishment, Dragnet is
- 2:47Speaker 5: the story of your police.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Force in action.
- 2:53Speaker 1: It was Thursday, October 8th.
- 2:54Speaker 3: It was hot in Los Angeles.
- 2:56Speaker 1: We were working the day watch out of narcotics detail.
- 2:58Speaker 1: My partner's Frank Smith.
- 2:59Speaker 3: The boss is Captain Kearney.
- 3:01Speaker 1: My name's Friday.
- 3:03Speaker 3: It was 4.05 p.m. when I got to 318 West.
- 3:05Speaker 1: 1st Street, the first floor. Narcotics detail.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Joe?
- 3:09Speaker 1: Hi, Frank.
- 3:09Speaker 3: You all threw up in court, eh? Yeah, I just
- 3:11Speaker 3: went to the jury. I don't think they'll be out long.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Well, I hope they hook him this time. He's overdue.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I don't see how they can miss. You can't tell, though.
- 3:17Speaker 3: You never know what a jury's gonna do. What do
- 3:19Speaker 3: you got here? following car brought him in about a
- 3:22Speaker 3: half hour ago.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Pretty high. What's he shooting? H.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Had a big pop. Can't talk to him.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Anything on him?
- 3:28Speaker 3: Two caps.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Had him taped inside the collar of his shirt.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Crime lab analyzed it. Same stuff we've been chasing. European.
- 3:34Speaker 1: High grade.
- 3:34Speaker 3: He come up with anything? Nothing. He talks a lot,
- 3:37Speaker 3: but he didn't say anything. Why don't you.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Take him on?
- 3:40Speaker 3: I'll give it a try.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Mr.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Jennings? This is my partner, Sergeant Friday. Well, how do
- 3:46Speaker 3: you do, sir? Sure happy to know you, Sergeant.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Have a chair. Yeah, thank you.
- 3:51Speaker 2: A cigarette?
- 3:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't mind if I do. I'll give you
- 3:54Speaker 1: a light.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Thank you. By the way, Sergeant, if you have any
- 4:03Speaker 3: influence around here at all, I'd sure appreciate it if
- 4:05Speaker 3: you'd tell this young fellow here to relax. He worries
- 4:07Speaker 3: too much. Keeps telling me there's something wrong.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Isn't there, Mr.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Jennings? No, of course not. It's not that I don't
- 4:12Speaker 3: enjoy the boys' company, but I've got an appointment.
- 4:14Speaker 1: A very important one, 11 o'clock this morning. Is that so?
- 4:17Speaker 3: Yes, very important. I have to be there at 11 sharp.
- 4:20Speaker 1: You're a little late, aren't you? It's past four in
- 4:21Speaker 1: the afternoon.
- 4:22Speaker 3: No, it couldn't be. The clock on the wall right
- 4:24Speaker 3: behind you. Hmm?
- 4:25Speaker 1: Well, what do you know about that? Time sure flies. Well,
- 4:29Speaker 1: now wait for me. I'd better get a move on.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Sure glad to have met you, Sergeant. Glad to meet
- 4:34Speaker 1: you too, young man.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Just a minute, Mr.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Jennings. It's not that simple. You'd better sit down. But
- 4:38Speaker 1: I told you I have an appointment very important. It'll
- 4:41Speaker 1: have to wait. Sit down. All right.
- 4:44Speaker 3: How about it, Jenny? When did you have your last fix?
- 4:47Speaker 3: What do you mean, when did I have a fix?
- 4:48Speaker 3: You know what we mean. Your arm looks like a
- 4:50Speaker 3: punch board.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Oh, the scars.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yes, of course. I take vitamin shots. What's your doctor's name?
- 4:55Speaker 1: Dr. Young. Eldon Young.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Down on South Hoover. You know his phone number, do you? No,
- 4:59Speaker 3: I don't.
- 4:59Speaker 1: It wouldn't do any good to call him anyway.
- 5:01Speaker 3: No, why? Well, he's not there. He's dead. You sure
- 5:03Speaker 3: of that? Well, I ought to be. I went to
- 5:05Speaker 3: his funeral. When did he die?
- 5:06Speaker 1: Oh, I don't know.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Two or three months ago. Sure was a nice fellow.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Fine doctor. That's his sample, Joe. Been rattling off like
- 5:12Speaker 3: that ever since they brought him in.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Oh, not the usual run. I'm sure that CD's looking busy. Look, Sergeant,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I don't think I quite understand this. What's this all about? Mr. Jennings,
- 5:18Speaker 1: you're hooked and you're hooked bad. When did you have
- 5:21Speaker 1: your last fix?
- 5:22Speaker 3: Well, to be honest with you, I don't quite remember.
- 5:24Speaker 3: I'd like to make it clear, though, I'm not a bum.
- 5:26Speaker 3: I'm not addicted to this stuff. You're not?
- 5:28Speaker 1: Really, it's the truth.
- 5:29Speaker 3: I can take it or leave it alone. I take
- 5:31Speaker 3: an occasional shot. That's about the size of it.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Where do you get the stuff, Jenny? I told you,
- 5:35Speaker 1: my doctor. No legitimate doctor gave you the stuff they
- 5:37Speaker 1: found on you. They don't dispense heroin. Now, how about it?
- 5:39Speaker 3: How about what, Sergeant? Are you going to tell us
- 5:40Speaker 3: the truth? Jenny? Well, frankly, Sergeant, no, I don't think
- 5:44Speaker 3: I will. I'm not an informer. That's to you, mister.
- 5:46Speaker 3: We're going to find out sooner or later. I'm sorry,
- 5:48Speaker 3: you're not going to find out from me. Now, look,
- 5:50Speaker 3: let's not get into an argument, shall we? I don't
- 5:52Speaker 3: have anything against you. Matter of fact, I like you.
- 5:54Speaker 3: I'd like to get along with you.
- 5:56Speaker 1: We're not going to argue, Jenny.
- 5:57Speaker 3: It would be useless to tell you that we're trying
- 5:58Speaker 3: to help you. Are you married? Do you have a family?
- 6:01Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Where do you live? Sorry, I can't tell you.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I'm not dragging them into this.
- 6:04Speaker 3: That's why I don't carry any identification.
- 6:06Speaker 1: All right, Jenny. You want to get your hat? Let's go. Go?
- 6:09Speaker 3: Where? Main jail. We're booking you in. Why? What for?
- 6:12Speaker 1: Possession of narcotics.
- 6:13Speaker 3: But I told you I'm not an addict. You can't
- 6:15Speaker 3: keep me in jail. I only use it occasionally.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Yeah, sure. Is there anything wrong with that?
- 6:18Speaker 3: Can't pay any harm on that, can you?
- 6:19Speaker 1: 4.38 p.m. The felony car officers who picked up the
- 6:31Speaker 1: suspect Jennings took him to the main jail where they
- 6:34Speaker 1: booked him for violation of the H & S Code,
- 6:36Speaker 1: Section 11,500. He'd been checked through R & I, but
- 6:39Speaker 1: he had no previous criminal record. Knowing that he was
- 6:42Speaker 1: bound to become ill, he was ordered into isolation and
- 6:45Speaker 1: the jailer instructed to notify the doctor in attendance if
- 6:47Speaker 1: Jennings needed attention.
- 6:49Speaker 3: 5.15 p.m.
- 6:49Speaker 1: We went over to the crime lab and checked with
- 6:52Speaker 1: Jay Allen, who'd analyzed the two capsules found taped to
- 6:55Speaker 1: the inside of Jennings' shirt collar. He told us it
- 6:58Speaker 1: was the same grade of high-test heroin which had been
- 7:00Speaker 1: found in the possession of other addicts during the past
- 7:02Speaker 1: two months. We knew it was of European origin. We
- 7:05Speaker 1: knew it was finding its way into the city.
- 7:07Speaker 3: We knew it was being made available to addicts. We
- 7:10Speaker 3: picked up half a dozen.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Pushers in the last few weeks with heroin of identical
- 7:13Speaker 1: quality in their possession. But the basic source of supply
- 7:17Speaker 1: still remained unknown. We were convinced that none of the
- 7:20Speaker 1: pushers knew who or what the ultimate source was. The
- 7:23Speaker 1: following morning, after Frank and I signed in, we went
- 7:25Speaker 1: over to the main jail, signed off to suspect Jennings
- 7:28Speaker 1: for interrogation, and he was brought to the interview room.
- 7:30Speaker 1: His face was white and he was trembling. It was
- 7:33Speaker 1: only a matter of time before he got worse, when
- 7:35Speaker 1: the withdrawal.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Pain set in. Morning, Jennings. I gotta get out of here.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Nobody told me it'd be like this when I got
- 7:39Speaker 3: started on this stuff. I can't stand any more of this.
- 7:42Speaker 1: That?
- 7:42Speaker 3: I'm gonna die. I wish I could die. Why can't
- 7:44Speaker 3: they give me something? I will talk to the doctor.
- 7:46Speaker 3: It's the best we can offer. He'll do what he
- 7:47Speaker 3: can for you. Can you get him now? I'd like
- 7:49Speaker 3: to ask you a few questions first.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Don't hurry, will you?
- 7:51Speaker 3: I'm sick, awful sick. Where'd he get your stuff, Jennings?
- 7:53Speaker 1: What's the man's name? I don't know.
- 7:55Speaker 3: It's the truth.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I don't.
- 7:56Speaker 3: How do you get your junk? Follow me, Eddie. Bartender.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I give him the money. He brings the stuff back.
- 7:59Speaker 3: How much do you pay for it?
- 8:01Speaker 1: Six.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Six dollars a cap. I don't know what he pays.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I pay him six dollars. Do you use it?
- 8:05Speaker 1: Says he doesn't. I don't know.
- 8:06Speaker 3: I think he is.
- 8:07Speaker 1: How about that, doctor?
- 8:08Speaker 3: I can't take this. Where do we contact Eddie? Far
- 8:10Speaker 3: in South Main, near 4th. One with a big airplane
- 8:12Speaker 3: on the sign. What's his last name, you know? Eddie what?
- 8:15Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 8:16Speaker 3: I don't know. What's he look like? Tall. Got blonde hair.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Wears a big signet ring. Eddie, that's all I know.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Good guy. He was trying to help me. Any idea
- 8:23Speaker 3: where he gets the junk? I don't know. Except one
- 8:25Speaker 3: night I was with him.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Yeah? Go about to a little junk in Manchester, Bear Garden.
- 8:28Speaker 1: He went in alone.
- 8:29Speaker 3: When we got back downtown, he had the stuff.
- 8:32Speaker 1: I don't know. Do you know if he got it
- 8:34Speaker 1: from a man who worked there, or do you think
- 8:35Speaker 1: it could have been one.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Of the customers? I didn't see him.
- 8:36Speaker 1: I didn't go in. I don't know.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Do you know anybody else who's in with this, Eddie?
- 8:39Speaker 3: Anybody with a dollar? He'd do anything for money. Hey,
- 8:41Speaker 3: did he ever tell you where this junk's coming from,
- 8:43Speaker 3: who's bringing it in? No, I asked him once. He
- 8:44Speaker 3: got a little sore. I said, what do you care
- 8:46Speaker 3: as long as he gets yours? I don't know.
- 8:47Speaker 1: No, no.
- 8:48Speaker 3: If I could just rest. If I could just let go.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Can't you do anything for me? Why don't they tell
- 8:54Speaker 3: you it's going to be like this? I'd like to
- 8:55Speaker 3: have you help us.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Now, as long as there are men like Eddie running loose,
- 8:58Speaker 1: there's going to be men like you that he's going
- 8:59Speaker 1: to feed on.
- 9:00Speaker 3: How about it? Is there anything else you can tell us?
- 9:02Speaker 3: That's all I know. I got the stuff from Eddie.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Talk to him. No more questions. One more, Jennings, about
- 9:06Speaker 3: your family. I don't want to talk about it. Your
- 9:08Speaker 3: wife called. She found out you were in jail. No.
- 9:11Speaker 1: She's coming down to see you.
- 9:11Speaker 3: She can't. I don't want to see her. Tell her
- 9:13Speaker 3: not to come. We can't stop her. Caused her enough trouble.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Twenty years of it.
- 9:17Speaker 1: First the booze, now this.
- 9:19Speaker 3: How long have you been on it, Jennings? A year,
- 9:21Speaker 3: a year and a half.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Been downhill all the way.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Three kids. I don't know what's going to happen. We'll
- 9:26Speaker 3: lose our house, lost my business already, all our friends.
- 9:30Speaker 3: You don't know what it's like.
- 9:31Speaker 1: We've got an idea.
- 9:31Speaker 3: No, you haven't. You've got no conception. It's been hell.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Nobody's gone through what I have, lost what I have. Suffering,
- 9:38Speaker 3: year and a half of it.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Really suffered. Nobody knew either.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Nobody suffered the way I did. Nobody.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I can think of one.
- 9:43Speaker 3: What?
- 9:44Speaker 1: How about your wife?
- 9:49Speaker 3: Jennings was returned to his cell. We contacted the jail
- 9:52Speaker 3: doctor and briefed him on.
- 9:53Speaker 1: The suspect's condition. That afternoon, Frank and I drove to
- 9:56Speaker 1: the bar on South Main Street near 4th where we
- 9:58Speaker 1: located the bartender, Eddie.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Whom Jennings had told us about.
- 10:01Speaker 1: It was fairly apparent that he was under the influence
- 10:04Speaker 1: of narcotics. We arrested him, took him back to the office,
- 10:06Speaker 1: and began questioning him. A check with R & I
- 10:08Speaker 1: showed that his true name was Eddie Hartsook and that
- 10:11Speaker 1: he'd had several prior arrests for possession of narcotics and
- 10:14Speaker 1: one arrest on the ABC Act. Unlike Jennings, he broke
- 10:17Speaker 1: almost immediately. He wouldn't confess to being a pusher, but
- 10:20Speaker 1: he did admit that he was an addict and that
- 10:22Speaker 1: he was supplied by a Jules Zimmerlin, the owner of
- 10:24Speaker 1: a German beer garden out on Manchester Avenue. He told
- 10:27Speaker 1: us he'd met Zimmerlin through a mutual friend who was
- 10:29Speaker 1: now doing time in Folsom for robbery. He identified the
- 10:32Speaker 1: friend as Pete Heimer. We checked with records and thought
- 10:35Speaker 1: it was true.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Hartsook was booked in as a bag addict.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Then we contacted Captain Larry O'Brien up at Folsom Penitentiary
- 10:42Speaker 1: who filled us in on Pete Heimer's background. After that,
- 10:44Speaker 1: we checked R & I on the owner of the
- 10:46Speaker 1: beer garden, Jules Zimmerlin. We found he was registered as
- 10:49Speaker 1: an ex-con from Minnesota where he'd done time for burglary
- 10:51Speaker 1: and grand theft. After a meeting with Captain Kearney, it
- 10:54Speaker 1: was agreed that our first move was to get next
- 10:56Speaker 1: to Zimmerman. I was deposed as a recent parolee from Folsom,
- 10:59Speaker 1: a friend of Pete Heimler's. That night I attempted to
- 11:02Speaker 1: make my first contact with Zimmerman at the beer garden
- 11:05Speaker 1: out on Manchester Avenue. Waiter?
- 11:08Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Can I help you? Yeah, draft beer. Bring me a
- 11:10Speaker 1: bag of peanuts, too. All right, sir.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Just a minute. Is the boss around, sir?
- 11:14Speaker 1: You, the boss.
- 11:15Speaker 3: He's around. I'd like to see him. He was around
- 11:17Speaker 3: a minute ago. Yeah, there he is. I'll tell him.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Yes, sir, you want to see me? You're Jules Zimmerman?
- 11:28Speaker 3: That's right. Jack Bronson. I'm a friend of Pete Heimer's.
- 11:30Speaker 3: He told me to look you up.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I thought Pete was in Fulton. Yeah, he is.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I was in there with him.
- 11:34Speaker 1: He sold me.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I drew parole about a month ago. Oh, I see.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Mind if I sit down? No, go ahead.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I'll be making out. Doing all right? Well, it's kind
- 11:42Speaker 1: of rough. He's fighting time, doing it the hard way.
- 11:44Speaker 1: He's not young anymore.
- 11:45Speaker 3: You know. Yeah, it's too bad.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Nice fellow, Pete. Never did use his head, though.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Here you are, sir. Draft beer?
- 11:51Speaker 1: Peanuts?
- 11:51Speaker 7: Uh, Mr.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Zimmerman?
- 11:52Speaker 3: No, nothing. Here, sir.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Where are you from originally, boss, in L.A.? No, Detroit.
- 11:56Speaker 1: What do you figure I'm doing now? Going back there?
- 11:58Speaker 3: No.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm still
- 12:00Speaker 1: looking around. I'm going to go back to my Iraq
- 12:03Speaker 1: attack station. You're still? Yeah, I got my M.O.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Tag from here to Seattle. What's that? Space. That's all
- 12:07Speaker 3: I ever work. That's what I think.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Do you mind if I... No, help yourself.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Oh, thanks.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you've had tough luck. How much time you do?
- 12:15Speaker 3: Two tens, seven inches.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Working now?
- 12:17Speaker 3: Yeah, lumberyard. What's that?
- 12:18Speaker 1: I said a lumberyard.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Must be easy.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Your hands don't show any work.
- 12:22Speaker 3: No, of course not. I don't go into that rough stuff.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I'm a clerk over there.
- 12:24Speaker 1: It's an easy track.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Not much dough, though. What are your plans? Got anything
- 12:27Speaker 3: of mine? Oh, I don't know.
- 12:29Speaker 7: Money.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Pete told me if I ever got disgusted, we'll look
- 12:30Speaker 1: you up. No, I don't know.
- 12:32Speaker 3: There's not much doing around here right now.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I really tried to make it when I came out
- 12:35Speaker 1: this time.
- 12:36Speaker 3: I played straight down the street.
- 12:37Speaker 1: No, thanks. You go ahead. Okay. Tried to play it straight,
- 12:40Speaker 1: stay on the street. It can't be done. I can't
- 12:42Speaker 1: punch a clock. It drives me crazy. I wish I
- 12:44Speaker 1: had something for you. Don't know this thing.
- 12:46Speaker 3: It's rough, Bronson.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I got an idea how you feel. I guess you
- 12:50Speaker 1: ought to know.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Pete told me.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Said you fell twice back in Minneapolis.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Wasn't it? Pete talks too much. Not only to the
- 12:55Speaker 3: right people.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Nice setup you.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Got here, Jules.
- 12:58Speaker 1: You must sell a lot of beer, huh? I get by.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Orchestra? Big layout?
- 13:03Speaker 1: Where's the cabin? Oh, we got pretty good business going.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Let's continue, Jules. I need a job. I got to
- 13:08Speaker 3: turn a buck.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I wish I had something for you.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Now, look, I didn't spend all that time in a
- 13:10Speaker 3: joint with Pete for nothing. I know the setup. Pete
- 13:12Speaker 3: says you're a right guy. He'll do business with you.
- 13:14Speaker 3: What do you mean? Just that.
- 13:15Speaker 1: I got contacts up by Fresno. Red Mountain. Good contacts.
- 13:18Speaker 1: A lot of money up there. Pete says you handle
- 13:20Speaker 1: quality stuff.
- 13:21Speaker 3: European. Except they're pushing up around Fresno with nothing.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Real lousy.
- 13:24Speaker 3: If we play it straight, we can both score. We'll
- 13:26Speaker 3: score good. I don't think I'll follow you, Bronson.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I think you do. If we get the right stuff
- 13:30Speaker 1: up there at the right time, we can clean up.
- 13:32Speaker 3: I know we can.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Let's go. I got a buddy who had a bummer
- 13:35Speaker 1: ride to get up there four months ago. Now he's
- 13:36Speaker 1: driving a Cadillac. Great business up there. It's fast and
- 13:39Speaker 1: it's clean.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Hey, you want another beer?
- 13:41Speaker 1: I can't afford a stall on this, Jewel. There's a
- 13:43Speaker 1: lot of sucker money around, and I don't want a
- 13:44Speaker 1: piece of it. Well, maybe we can talk, Bronson. I
- 13:47Speaker 1: don't know. It might work out something. I'd like to
- 13:49Speaker 1: get to know you.
- 13:50Speaker 3: What's the pitch?
- 13:50Speaker 1: I said I was a friend of Pete's tonight. Check
- 13:52Speaker 1: with him, or don't you trust him? I haven't heard
- 13:54Speaker 1: from Pete lately. I'd like to. Can't be too careful,
- 13:56Speaker 1: you know. He pays to check things out, so I.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Go ahead and check. I just haven't got the time
- 14:00Speaker 3: to throw away, that's all.
- 14:01Speaker 1: I'm too crazy about these peanuts. I'll tell you. I
- 14:06Speaker 1: might send a wife up to visit Pete this Sunday.
- 14:08Speaker 1: She doesn't know him, but she can ask him about you.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I hope you don't mind.
- 14:11Speaker 3: No, I don't mind. I just want to get going.
- 14:13Speaker 1: If you haven't got any junk to push, put me
- 14:15Speaker 1: next to somebody who has, huh?
- 14:17Speaker 3: There's dough to be made, enough for both of us.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I want to make it. We can't go wrong on
- 14:21Speaker 1: the deal. You're smart enough to see that, aren't you?
- 14:23Speaker 1: Talk fast, Watson. Look, you're not doing me any favor.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I'm doing you one. If you're not ready to move
- 14:27Speaker 1: on the deal, just say so.
- 14:28Speaker 3: If you are, okay. Look, we're in a big rush.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Take your time. Let's talk about it. We already have.
- 14:32Speaker 3: How about it? How about what? You've got this set up. Now,
- 14:34Speaker 3: when do I get an answer? When I get one
- 14:36Speaker 3: from Pete.
- 14:36Speaker 1: 11.30 p.m. I traded small talk with a narcotic suspect,
- 14:44Speaker 1: Jules Zimmerlin, until closing time. Then I left the beer garden,
- 14:47Speaker 1: took a streetcar back to the room I'd rented in
- 14:49Speaker 1: a small third-rate hotel down on South Broadway. The following morning,
- 14:53Speaker 1: I got in touch with the office, and they, in turn,
- 14:55Speaker 1: contacted Captain Larry O'Brien at Folsom Penitentiary and acquainted him
- 14:59Speaker 1: with the facts of the case. He was told that Mrs.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Zimmerlin would arrive at the prison to visit Pete Heimer
- 15:04Speaker 1: the following Sunday, and that she had never seen Heimer
- 15:06Speaker 1: before in person. O'Brien made immediate arrangements to have one
- 15:10Speaker 1: of the officers at the prison pose as Pete Heimer
- 15:12Speaker 1: and visit with Mrs. Zimmerman. Heimer himself would know nothing
- 15:15Speaker 1: about it. I spent the next few nights at the
- 15:18Speaker 1: beer garden trading more small talk with the suspect, Jules Zimmerman.
- 15:21Speaker 1: The conversation included fishing, the liquor business, gambling.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Sports, everything but narcotic.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I couldn't tell how I was making out with him,
- 15:28Speaker 1: whether he was sold on me or not. I waited
- 15:30Speaker 1: in my hotel room the following Sunday afternoon until Frank
- 15:33Speaker 1: Smith called me from the office. He told me Captain
- 15:36Speaker 1: O'Brien at Folsom had just contacted them. He said Mrs.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Zimmerlin had visited the prison, that she'd talked with the
- 15:41Speaker 1: guard posing as Pete Heimer, and that apparently everything had
- 15:43Speaker 1: gone off well. 9.30 the following Monday night, I went
- 15:47Speaker 1: back to the beer garden and met with Jules Zimmerlin. Yeah,
- 15:51Speaker 1: not a bad crowd for a Monday night. Usually a
- 15:53Speaker 1: lot slower than this.
- 15:54Speaker 3: I'll let you worry about that, Jules. We've been through
- 15:55Speaker 3: enough small talk.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Now, how about it? What's the answer? Gotta be in
- 15:58Speaker 1: a hurry, don't you?
- 15:59Speaker 3: Relax.
- 15:59Speaker 1: It'll work out.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Not without a push, it won't. Now, how about it?
- 16:01Speaker 3: You said you'd have an answer tonight. I got one.
- 16:03Speaker 1: All right.
- 16:03Speaker 3: It's no. What? The idea's all right. I just don't
- 16:06Speaker 3: like the way you figured it.
- 16:07Speaker 1: That's all. Yeah. I don't take the risk of getting
- 16:09Speaker 1: the stuff up to Fresno.
- 16:10Speaker 3: If you buy, you buy here. After that, I don't care.
- 16:12Speaker 3: How you get up north is your world.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Well, if that's the way you feel, I'm not going
- 16:15Speaker 1: to fight you on it.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Your wife checked with Pete. Yes, sir. Pete gave the go-ahead.
- 16:19Speaker 1: You're everything you say you are. I understand you did
- 16:21Speaker 1: a couple of big favors for Pete up there. Well,
- 16:22Speaker 1: they can make the same from anybody you mind. Pete
- 16:24Speaker 1: told the wife to spit a beef for him.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Could have talked.
- 16:27Speaker 1: He kept your mouth shut. Only one more thing I
- 16:29Speaker 1: want to know.
- 16:30Speaker 3: You've asked enough, haven't you? You ever chippy around with
- 16:32Speaker 3: the junk?
- 16:32Speaker 1: Do I look like it? I wouldn't touch it for
- 16:33Speaker 1: a million dollars. I know the things I'm weak on.
- 16:35Speaker 1: H is in one of them. Good.
- 16:37Speaker 3: I don't want anyone around to shoot yourself. Seen it
- 16:39Speaker 3: happen a hundred times.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Cops fill them in and you're gone.
- 16:42Speaker 3: They all talk when they get sick. I'll stop it.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Come on, back me up. All right. Say, you got
- 16:49Speaker 1: these friends who want to buy.
- 16:50Speaker 3: How much money can they raise?
- 16:51Speaker 1: Well, it depends.
- 16:52Speaker 3: How much stuff can you come up with? I mean
- 16:53Speaker 3: good stuff.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Everything I have is good.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Here, go ahead. All right.
- 16:59Speaker 1: How about it?
- 16:59Speaker 3: How much do they want? I told you, it depends.
- 17:00Speaker 1: How much can you deliver?
- 17:01Speaker 3: That's up to the big man. I don't know how
- 17:03Speaker 3: much he's got left. I figure stores are pretty low.
- 17:05Speaker 3: I thought you were the big man. I'm a guest.
- 17:07Speaker 3: I handle the stuff for him. That's all. I get
- 17:09Speaker 3: my cut. Well, he must be big. Who is he?
- 17:11Speaker 3: None of your business. You don't make the deals with him.
- 17:13Speaker 3: You make them through me.
- 17:14Speaker 1: All right with me. You say you figure he's pretty
- 17:16Speaker 1: low on the supply, huh?
- 17:17Speaker 3: When's he going to have enough to deal?
- 17:19Speaker 1: I'm in a big buy.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Maybe this Saturday.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 17:21Speaker 3: When will you know?
- 17:22Speaker 1: Saturday when I see it.
- 17:23Speaker 3: How much cash can your friends raise?
- 17:24Speaker 1: I don't know. 10,000, maybe more, depends.
- 17:27Speaker 3: You have the money by then?
- 17:28Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 17:28Speaker 3: I have to have a couple of days.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Contact my friends. Probably they'll want more. How'd the stuff
- 17:32Speaker 1: come in?
- 17:32Speaker 3: Why? What do you think? Why?
- 17:34Speaker 1: I want the right slant. Where's it coming from? I'm
- 17:36Speaker 1: not going to get loaded down with Mexican stuff.
- 17:37Speaker 3: We can help it.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Don't worry. European comes in by ship. Well, it doesn't
- 17:40Speaker 1: gel for me. How do they get it by customs?
- 17:42Speaker 3: They don't.
- 17:43Speaker 4: I do.
- 17:43Speaker 1: By the way, you do anything Saturday?
- 17:45Speaker 3: Why?
- 17:46Speaker 1: I take a little run in my fishing boat. One
- 17:47Speaker 1: of the boys is sick.
- 17:48Speaker 3: I need another deckhand. What kind of sailor are you?
- 17:50Speaker 3: I can make out.
- 17:50Speaker 1: All right.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Come along. We'll do a little fishing.
- 17:52Speaker 1: You might learn something. Yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Smuggling's not as tough as it looks.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Tuesday, October 13th, 9 a.m. I called the office and
- 18:17Speaker 1: briefed them on the results of my conversation with the suspect,
- 18:19Speaker 1: Jules Zimmerlin, the night before at the beer garden. Captain
- 18:22Speaker 1: Kearney put my partner, Frank Smith, on the phone and
- 18:24Speaker 1: we set up a meeting for that afternoon.
- 18:26Speaker 3: 2.30 p.m.
- 18:28Speaker 1: I left my hotel room and took a streetcar downtown
- 18:30Speaker 1: to Pershing Square. Excavating work for the new underground garage
- 18:33Speaker 1: at the square was still going on. A temporary wooden
- 18:36Speaker 1: fence circled the construction area. I went to the southeast
- 18:39Speaker 1: corner of the square where a courtesy stand.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Had been put up for the sidewalk superintendent. I stood
- 18:44Speaker 3: around with a dozen other people watching the excavation. I waited. 2.45 p.m. Joe,
- 18:48Speaker 3: how's it going, I-5?
- 18:52Speaker 1: Not bad.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Hey, they're moving this thing right along, I say. In fact,
- 18:57Speaker 3: they got that hole just about done. I think you're
- 18:59Speaker 3: going to have to go deeper than that. It's kind
- 19:00Speaker 3: of hard to judge from up here. It looks deeper
- 19:02Speaker 3: than it really is. Well, I had some pretty good
- 19:05Speaker 3: luck last night. That's what I hear.
- 19:07Speaker 1: How's it shape up? He told me the stuff's been
- 19:08Speaker 1: coming in by ship. Zimmerman did. I think maybe he's
- 19:11Speaker 1: telling the truth.
- 19:11Speaker 3: How do you think they're working?
- 19:13Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 19:13Speaker 3: He wouldn't say. I might have a chance to find
- 19:15Speaker 3: out this Saturday. It's a bitch.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Zimmerman's got a boat.
- 19:18Speaker 3: He offered to take me out this Saturday.
- 19:20Speaker 1: He mentioned they're expecting the shipment of the junk the
- 19:22Speaker 1: same day.
- 19:22Speaker 7: Uh-huh.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Could be he's got some connection on one of the
- 19:25Speaker 1: ships coming in from overseas.
- 19:26Speaker 3: He takes his boat out.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Meets the ship, and somehow they transfer the junk without
- 19:29Speaker 1: attracting attention. Any chance you can get the name of
- 19:32Speaker 1: the connection, if there is one, I mean? I'm going
- 19:34Speaker 1: to try. Supposed to be a big man in the setup, too.
- 19:36Speaker 3: I haven't got his name.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yet, either. Somebody over Zimmerman?
- 19:39Speaker 3: Yeah. You handle the details for Saturday, will you? I'll
- 19:41Speaker 3: keep you brief. Okay. Check on all the ships that are.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Due into Wilmington Friday and Saturday, will you? I'll find
- 19:46Speaker 1: out where Jules keeps his boat, Morton. You can make
- 19:48Speaker 1: arrangements to have the dock area covered and.
- 19:40Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:04Speaker 3: I'm a little worried, Joe. Things seem to be rolling
- 20:06Speaker 3: out too fast.
- 20:07Speaker 1: How do you mean?
- 20:07Speaker 3: It's possible Zimmerman might be wise. Maybe he's just stringing
- 20:10Speaker 3: you along. He's not going to be able to follow
- 20:12Speaker 3: you out from the bay without tipping the whole thing.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 20:14Speaker 3: You're going to be strictly on your own on that boat.
- 20:16Speaker 3: If Zimmerman's wise, he and the gang will.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Be in a perfect spot.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Maybe we could set it up to have a boat
- 20:21Speaker 3: standing by if you need help, maybe half a mile
- 20:23Speaker 3: away or something. It might scare them off, ruin the
- 20:25Speaker 3: whole deal, Frank. Yeah, it's trouble, Joe. If they're wise
- 20:28Speaker 3: and they get you out on their boat, they got
- 20:30Speaker 3: you cold. They won't give us any chances.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Well, then we're even. I'm not giving any on there.
- 20:34Speaker 1: For the rest of the week, I spent the days
- 20:40Speaker 1: in my hotel room and my nights at the beer
- 20:42Speaker 1: garden setting up the buy with Zimmerman. Thursday night in
- 20:45Speaker 1: Zimmerlin's office, we agreed on the final details for the buy.
- 20:49Speaker 1: In the process, I succeeded in finding out the plan
- 20:52Speaker 1: for the meet. At 2.30 Saturday morning, Zimmerlin, two of
- 20:55Speaker 1: his gang members, and myself would board his boat at
- 20:58Speaker 1: a private dock in the San Pedro area and proceed
- 21:00Speaker 1: five miles out from shore. How the actual transfer of
- 21:04Speaker 1: the narcotics was supposed to be made, I still couldn't
- 21:06Speaker 1: find out. But I did learn that Zimmerman's main contact
- 21:08Speaker 1: on the deal was a Marcus Torricelli.
- 21:11Speaker 3: He was supposed to be a steward aboard an inbound freighter.
- 21:14Speaker 1: The next day, I relayed the information to the office
- 21:16Speaker 1: and gave him a final briefing on the plans for
- 21:18Speaker 1: the meet as Zimmerman outlined them to me. Saturday, 2.30 a.m.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Zimbalan and I, along with the two members of the gang,
- 21:24Speaker 1: boarded his boat at the private dock and proceeded out
- 21:27Speaker 1: to sea. It was a fairly new boat, well-appointed, a
- 21:30Speaker 1: 38-foot motor cruiser. The two men kept busy above deck.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Zimbalan and I played cards, talked, and drank beer down
- 21:36Speaker 1: in the cabin. 5 a.m.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Two fair queens up. You do better?
- 21:41Speaker 1: You dealt it. Three trays.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Had enough? Forty bucks worth of money. Want another beer? No,
- 21:47Speaker 3: I got a headache.
- 21:48Speaker 1: What time you got? Hmm, later than I thought.
- 21:50Speaker 3: It's one after five.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Let's go topside, kid.
- 21:56Speaker 3: About time we started looking around anyway. Come on, I'd
- 21:58Speaker 3: better get.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Up there and check our course.
- 22:00Speaker 3: All right.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Sure like the horse you got, June.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Just set you back plenty, huh?
- 22:04Speaker 1: Wouldn't believe it. I got an insurance for $ 20, 000 and
- 22:06Speaker 1: it cost me $ 500.
- 22:08Speaker 3: You paid $ 500 for this?
- 22:09Speaker 1: Yeah, a society woman owned it. Her husband left it
- 22:11Speaker 1: to her.
- 22:11Speaker 3: She got hooked.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Oh.
- 22:12Speaker 3: One of my best customers.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Spent everything she had on the junk. I got this
- 22:16Speaker 1: for $ 500 worth of age.
- 22:17Speaker 3: High grade. What's she do for stuff now?
- 22:19Speaker 1: She doesn't need it.
- 22:20Speaker 4: She's dead.
- 22:20Speaker 3: It's really a nice boat.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Never enjoyed anything more in my life. Just a minute.
- 22:27Speaker 3: What's the matter? Yeah, I must be it.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Huh? What are you talking about?
- 22:31Speaker 3: The freighter.
- 22:31Speaker 1: A couple of points off the garbage.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Huh?
- 22:34Speaker 3: George?
- 22:35Speaker 7: Hey, George.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Yeah, Jewel. Okay, I see it. Got a signal now? No,
- 22:39Speaker 1: hold on. Let's make sure.
- 22:39Speaker 3: You have any glasses there with you?
- 22:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Here.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Have a look here. What's this?
- 22:48Speaker 3: Just a minute. Yeah, Panamanian flag.
- 22:51Speaker 1: That's it. Very no.
- 22:53Speaker 3: All right, George, let's start.
- 22:55Speaker 6: Swing around.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Okay, Jules. Give the rudder hard right. Three complete turns.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Keep a stern of her. Right. Can you set up, Jules?
- 23:04Speaker 1: What happens now? Another pair of glasses there.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Watch for yourself.
- 23:08Speaker 1: All right.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Delivery comes from the ship, huh? Big boy on board?
- 23:12Speaker 3: That's right. On board here. You really had me fooled.
- 23:16Speaker 3: Let's keep it that way.
- 23:17Speaker 1: To tell you the truth, I thought.
- 23:18Speaker 3: You had it figured. No, I didn't know.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Where was it?
- 23:21Speaker 3: You've got a good front, Jules. Keep it that way
- 23:23Speaker 3: and you'll be hard to make.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I'm on the home stretch.
- 23:25Speaker 3: You're not going to make me. Two more trips and
- 23:27Speaker 3: I'm getting out.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Then I really go fishing.
- 23:28Speaker 3: There he is, Jules.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Back on the stern.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Got something?
- 23:31Speaker 3: All right. Keep an eye out.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Hey, train your glasses on the stern of that freighter. Yeah?
- 23:36Speaker 1: What about it?
- 23:38Speaker 3: Just a minute. Now, you see it? Now?
- 23:41Speaker 1: Oh, there's a man coming out, huh? It's like he's
- 23:44Speaker 1: dumping some garbage over there.
- 23:45Speaker 3: That's right. Don't watch the man.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Watch the garbage. It doesn't go through the cut.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Pretty smart.
- 23:50Speaker 1: That's your contact, huh?
- 23:51Speaker 3: Yeah, Marcus.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Good boy.
- 23:52Speaker 3: He hasn't failed yet. All right, George.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Move in.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Get the net.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Ready for the pickup?
- 23:58Speaker 3: All right, George. Tell you what, I just can't get
- 24:00Speaker 3: over it. It's sure smart. How do you keep the
- 24:02Speaker 3: junk dry?
- 24:02Speaker 1: No problem. Just dump the package over along with the garbage.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Waterproof wrapping.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Hey, keep your eye on it, that's all.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I got to spy on it. All right, George,
- 24:11Speaker 3: hand down the net.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Here you go. Yeah.
- 24:14Speaker 3: All right, coming along, Stein.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Hold it steady.
- 24:21Speaker 3: All right, got it.
- 24:22Speaker 1: All right, let's go. George, let's go.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Okay.
- 24:28Speaker 1: All right, Bronson, down below. Okay.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Sure make it look easy.
- 24:34Speaker 1: All it takes is a little savvy. Now let's have
- 24:37Speaker 1: a look here. Ping-pong balls. What's the pitch there?
- 24:43Speaker 3: You ever hear one sinking?
- 24:44Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, sure.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Three, four.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Yeah, all here.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Good delivery.
- 24:54Speaker 1: I got Bronson your share. Ten grand worth. How about
- 24:57Speaker 1: the money?
- 24:59Speaker 3: How about a look?
- 25:00Speaker 1: Suit yourself. All right. Okay.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Fine. Want to bet the money?
- 25:08Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 25:09Speaker 3: I'll give you a thousand now.
- 25:10Speaker 1: What do you mean a thousand? There's ten grand here.
- 25:13Speaker 3: That's what you wanted.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Take it easy, will you? I know what I was
- 25:15Speaker 1: getting into out here. Could have been a heist. I
- 25:17Speaker 1: couldn't bring all the dough along.
- 25:18Speaker 3: I want the money. I told you, I'll give.
- 25:19Speaker 1: You a thousand now.
- 25:20Speaker 3: You'll get the rest when we get in.
- 25:21Speaker 1: There's something wrong here. I don't like this.
- 25:23Speaker 3: I'll call George. We'll head out again. Relax, will you, Jewel?
- 25:25Speaker 3: There's nothing wrong.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Don't try to con me.
- 25:27Speaker 3: I'm not taking a chance.
- 25:28Speaker 1: There's something wrong.
- 25:28Speaker 3: All right, hold it right there.
- 25:29Speaker 1: I'm calling George. Call him loud first time. You won't
- 25:31Speaker 1: get a second one. Nice gun.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Fuzz.
- 25:36Speaker 1: You go back and sit down.
- 25:38Speaker 3: No, right where you are.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Hands on the table. Look, Bonson, we got time to
- 25:43Speaker 1: talk this out. I got a big investment here. I
- 25:44Speaker 1: got a lot to lose. All you have to lose
- 25:46Speaker 1: is a pinch. You keep your hands on the table,
- 25:47Speaker 1: will you? I'll make it right by you. You won't
- 25:48Speaker 1: be sorry. I'm a wealthy man. How much you want?
- 25:50Speaker 3: Keep your voice down. Believe me, I'll make it right
- 25:52Speaker 3: to you.
- 25:52Speaker 1: You said you liked the boat, didn't you?
- 25:53Speaker 3: You can have it, huh?
- 25:54Speaker 1: Everything with it, okay?
- 25:55Speaker 3: No deal, Jules. It doesn't smell any better than your delivery. What?
- 25:58Speaker 1: Garbage. The story you have just heard was true.
- 26:08Speaker 3: The names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:19Speaker 5: Jules Zimmerlin, his contact Marcus Corricelli, and the other two
- 26:23Speaker 5: members of the narcotics gang were filed on in the
- 26:25Speaker 5: district attorney's office for violation of the state health and
- 26:28Speaker 5: safety code section 11,500, one count. They were found guilty
- 26:32Speaker 5: and received sentences as prescribed by law. The violation carries
- 26:36Speaker 5: a penalty of imprisonment in the state penitentiary for not
- 26:39Speaker 5: less than.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Five nor more than ten years.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Ladies and gentlemen, defense of our country against aggression abroad
- 26:46Speaker 4: and inflation at home depends on our ability to fill
- 26:49Speaker 4: both our military and civilian requirements. All Americans must work together. Remember,
- 26:54Speaker 4: the better we produce, the stronger we grow.
- 27:06Speaker 5: You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases
- 27:10Speaker 5: from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 27:13Speaker 5: Chief of Police, WHP.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Welcome back. I feel like Jules made some really poor
- 27:20Speaker 2: decisions here. Probably taking Friday out on the boat and
- 27:28Speaker 2: also not checking about the money before they left. are
- 27:34Speaker 2: key mistakes, and even more than that, letting him know
- 27:41Speaker 2: that his wife had never met Pete. That's the type
- 27:45Speaker 2: of information that Friday would want to work out of
- 27:50Speaker 2: him and try to figure out, how am I going
- 27:51Speaker 2: to figure this out? without being suspicious. But no worries,
- 27:56Speaker 2: Jules just gave that one away for free. And it's
- 28:00Speaker 2: a reminder that when you are in crime, you cannot
- 28:04Speaker 2: afford to be giving the police things for free by
- 28:09Speaker 2: making dumb mistakes. Now maybe part of it is the
- 28:14Speaker 2: episode does suggest that Jules was not someone who planned
- 28:19Speaker 2: to stay in this long term. And so maybe it
- 28:22Speaker 2: wasn't as immersed in the culture and its cautions within
- 28:28Speaker 2: the drug world. Certainly when compared to the relative caution
- 28:32Speaker 2: of criminals we met in episodes like The Big Meat
- 28:37Speaker 2: and The Big Red. Now there were a couple of
- 28:41Speaker 2: terms in there that were a bit unfamiliar. One was...
- 28:47Speaker 2: felony car, which isn't a phrase that we hear as
- 28:52Speaker 2: often as some other police lingo, which you can kind
- 28:56Speaker 2: of figure out even if they don't explicitly say what
- 29:00Speaker 2: it is just by the context that it's used. But
- 29:04Speaker 2: a felony car was a two-officer car that was... there
- 29:11Speaker 2: to respond to robberies in progress or other serious crimes
- 29:17Speaker 2: where there was a felony being committed or some other
- 29:21Speaker 2: sort of dangerous call. Now, the term sidewalk superintendent is
- 29:27Speaker 2: one that I had actually only heard on an Ozzie
- 29:32Speaker 2: and Harriet radio show. And it's essentially someone who is
- 29:38Speaker 2: watching construction take place as a spectator it's not something
- 29:45Speaker 2: I have seen happening really today and we've got a
- 29:49Speaker 2: lot of construction going on around town and I've never
- 29:54Speaker 2: seen like a flock of spectators or anything but The
- 29:59Speaker 2: big thing is, it was kind of striking to hear
- 30:03Speaker 2: Friday use the term, because to me, that seemed like
- 30:06Speaker 2: a bit of a slang term. But he mentioned a
- 30:11Speaker 2: courtesy stand, and apparently this was such a thing during
- 30:16Speaker 2: the era... that you actually had stands to watch construction
- 30:22Speaker 2: and process. Now, this was popularized by the sidewalk superintendent's
- 30:29Speaker 2: club at Rockefeller Plaza, although some scholarship suggests that the
- 30:36Speaker 2: idea originated in Des Moines, and was picked up by
- 30:42Speaker 2: the Rockefellers and popularized. But at any rate, this was
- 30:46Speaker 2: very popular and made a good cover for Friday and
- 30:51Speaker 2: Smith to meet. And given the construction noises, there was
- 30:55Speaker 2: probably very little risk of them being overheard, particularly, you know,
- 31:00Speaker 2: since they began with the typical sidewalk superintendent thing. Opening lines.
- 31:08Speaker 2: All right, listener comments and feedback now. And we have
- 31:11Speaker 2: a comment from a random Spotify user regarding the big whiff.
- 31:18Speaker 2: I already Googled, so I know I'm wrong, but I
- 31:21Speaker 2: thought Arnold sounded like Tony Dow. Well, sometimes that's the
- 31:26Speaker 2: only way to check, and I do appreciate you checking
- 31:29Speaker 2: on that. Tony Dow, of course, the actor who played
- 31:34Speaker 2: Wally on Leave it to Beaver. He essentially missed the
- 31:38Speaker 2: golden age of radio and never appeared in Dragnet, although
- 31:42Speaker 2: he did appear in an episode of Emergency. All right, well,
- 31:48Speaker 2: now it's time to thank our Patreon supporter of the day.
- 31:51Speaker 2: And I want to thank Murph, Patreon supporter since February 2021,

- 32:30Speaker 7: The dangerous mission you sent me on is a fait accompli.
- 32:33Speaker 6: But I only talked to you on the phone about
- 32:34Speaker 6: an hour ago.
- 32:35Speaker 7: I've wasted no time. You have the $ 300 for me?
- 32:41Speaker 1: $ 150.
- 32:41Speaker 6: You have the information? Oui.
- 32:43Speaker 7: The Cellini Medallion.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Well?
- 32:44Speaker 7: Well, it's on the way to your own country.
- 32:46Speaker 3: On the way?
- 32:47Speaker 4: How?
- 32:48Speaker 7: Heading away in the case of wine aboard the ship.
- 32:51Speaker 7: The Clemper Hall.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Out of Le Havre.
- 32:53Speaker 6: The Clemper Hall, huh? Destination?
- 32:55Speaker 7: San Francisco.
- 32:56Speaker 6: And when's it due to arrive here?
- 32:57Speaker 7: Late tomorrow night, the cargo is many cases of wine.
- 33:01Speaker 7: It's bottles of wine. The medallion is hidden away in
- 33:04Speaker 7: one of them.
- 33:05Speaker 6: You're sure of all this, de Marsac?
- 33:06Speaker 7: But of course, one of me.
- 33:08Speaker 6: Because if I fly all the way to San Francisco
- 33:10Speaker 6: and find out you're giving me a wrong steer... Oh, no, no.
- 33:13Speaker 7: How can you, my oldest, my dearest.
- 33:15Speaker 6: Yeah, sure. Now, this means that someone over there is
- 33:18Speaker 6: going to have to pick it up.
- 33:19Speaker 7: Oui, at the warehouse at the pier. A monsieur Frank Gerstel.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Gerstel?
- 33:25Speaker 7: You know?
- 33:26Speaker 6: If he's the one I'm thinking of... A fence who
- 33:28Speaker 6: used to operate New York, but they can never pin
- 33:30Speaker 6: anything on him?
- 33:30Speaker 7: It must be the same.
- 33:32Speaker 6: But in the shipload of wine, how will he know
- 33:34Speaker 6: which case has the Cellini medallion in it?
- 33:37Speaker 7: By this mark, mon ami.
- 33:40Speaker 6: Yeah? So. A tiny circle, yeah? Ah, where the Maltese
- 33:45Speaker 6: cross in it.
- 33:45Speaker 7: Oui, like so.
- 33:46Speaker 6: Okay, de Marsac. You'd better pack up and catch a
- 33:49Speaker 6: plane back to the States.
- 33:50Speaker 7: Mon ami.
- 33:51Speaker 3: Huh?
- 33:52Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, sure. Here you are. Fifty, a hundred... 150.
- 33:57Speaker 7: Oh, oui, monsieur. Oh, such a dangerous....
- 34:03Speaker 6: Okay, okay. 170, 90, 200.
- 34:05Speaker 7: Oh, merci. Merci beaucoup. Bon voyage. Oh, success.
- 34:09Speaker 6: Wait a minute.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Huh?
- 34:11Speaker 6: You dug up an awful lot of information in a
- 34:12Speaker 6: very short time, de Marsac. Even about that mark on
- 34:16Speaker 6: the case of wine. Oh, but of course, monsieur. You see,
- 34:19Speaker 6: I put it there myself. You what?
- 34:23Speaker 2: Oui.
- 34:24Speaker 7: When I helped my friends to smuggle the medallion aboard
- 34:26Speaker 7: the ship.
- 34:27Speaker 2: I hope you'll be with us then. In the meantime,
