- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Tristan, we have officially defeated Chris Beard.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: Destiny has been fulfilled.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: And man, does it feel so good?
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: Does it feel so good to get that retribution, to get that affirmation, to know that things are even better now?
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: And we went and did what we had to.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, when you really think about it, everything's working out pretty great for us.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: This is kind of a storybook season so far.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Obviously, long way to go.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: A lot more good teams to beat, teams that are much better than Texas, by the way.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then, you know, but but really you look at the grand scheme of things and you're like, hey, and I wanted I wanted to get to this before we start talking about the game, but uh, you know, with how how mediocre we were these last two seasons that we had Chris Beards as our head coach, and really switching at the right time, him leaving at almost the perfect time for Mark Adams to come in and improve this team and improve this program.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: I think everything is working out pretty fantastic for Texas Tech here.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's an excellent point.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: I mean, we whenever we were uh we're watching ourselves skid up a bit these last couple seasons, you know, ending in a bit of disappointment.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's not like they were bad seasons, but just to see Mark Adams take over the team and to rejuvenate it, you know, really get his hands all over it without being shut down by Chris Beard, you know, especially with the offense and really leaning into his defense.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: It's just shown what can happen wherever you let the real mastermind have control over the program and he's proved it.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: He's proved that he's the real basketball coach here.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I wanted to talk about Beard versus Adams right now because you look at just this season, you don't have to look put everything that happened from last year on.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Don't even think about that.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Look at two guys that have just started at a new at as head coach at a program, first year being head coach, bunch of transfers on both of these teams.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, seven to eight transfers making up the majority of the minutes on both of these teams.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: Mark Adams has done more with quote unquote less than Chris Beard has done so far this season.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: And I say that what I mean is Chris Beard got three of the top ten available transfers on the transfer portal by a lot of people's standards.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: And then he also picked up guys like Devin Askew and uh Dylan Disu and those type of players.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: While Mark Adams got guys that fit his system but were underlooked, guys like Bryson Williams and Adonis Arms and Davion Warren.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, Kevin O'Banner was a highly touted transfer, but really the rest of those, the rest of our transfers haven't been, you know, very talked about in the offseason.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: And so for Chris Beard to have a quote unquote more talented team and do way less with it, I think that shows who's the better coach here.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: I think you're really painting who's better at talent evaluation.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: I think Mark Adams knows what he's looking for, and Mark Adams is has an idea of the exact player he wants to get out of the transfer portal.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: And I don't think he really cares what the you know general consensus is of who's a better player, you know, in the media rank eyes.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: Because I think that's the bit one of the biggest differences between coach Adams and Coach Beard is I think Coach Beard is so obsessed with perception that he thinks he just needs to get these superstars with uh you know highly touted on every page and all that.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: And yes, they're great players, but do they fit what he's actually looking for?
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: Or is he just looking for more flash than sustenance?
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: I think that's what you're seeing with coach uh coach Adams is you're getting these guys who are quietly really good.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, these aren't very flashy players.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: Sure, they can make they can do some awesome things on the court, but you know, they're not exactly talked about all across the country, they're not they don't exactly sweep the media, they don't they're not brought up on ESPN that all that often compared to other players.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: Um, but I think like you nailed it on the head, I think we got who we needed out of the transfer portal, not got who would be impressive to everybody else, kind of thing.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think it's really less about Beard, like what the what he thinks is the perception, and more of Beard thinking that he can just have any player join his program and they're gonna buy in.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: That's what he firmly believes.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: And so it may not be a fit for the system, it may not be a fit for the defensive mindset, but he's going to grab the most talented players he can out of the portal.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: And we've seen that in the past, even with Texas Tech, players that don't necessarily fit.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: And I don't want to say a guy like Mac McClung doesn't fit, but he kind of does it.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: Like Mark Adams, I don't think, would have got Mac McClung on this team.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: And I mean, we did pretty good with that with last year's team.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: I'm not trying to crap on Mac McClung or anything.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: He was a great red raider.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: I was really happy to have him, but you know, he didn't play a ton of defense.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: So with this defensive culture and Beards trying to do the same thing over there at Texas, it's not he's not getting the right guys.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: Trey Mitchell is not a good guy to have on a on a Chris Beard team.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Marcus Carr, as good as he is, is not a good guy to have on a Chris Beard coach team.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: Dylan Dissu, I mean, you're seeing all these guys, Bishop, uh, whoever else, all these other transfers, they're not doing well in his offense.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: And he's just not getting the right personnel on this team.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: And uh Beard thinks he can just coach anybody up to fit the system, and that's just not true.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: While Adams, I think, is realizing hey, we need to get the right guys for this type of system.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: See, I think I think Mac McClung's a great example, you know.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: Like you said, you know, we love him, and huge props to him.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: You know, he was he was wearing his red and black that night, cheering us on, um, as any good alum should.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: Uh, but you're right, he's a perfect example of what Chris Beard looks for in the transfer portal.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Well, the reason why he went after Mac McClung is because getting Mac McClung was a big deal for Texas Tech because he was like the most sought-after transfer or one of the most sought after sought after transfers in the country.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: You know, he's a YouTube star, he's all over the internet, and he goes to Lubbock, Texas, and Chris Beard gets him there.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: I think that's what was more obsessed with rather than getting a player that fits the system, and that's why I think it's going to keep continue to be the downfall of UT.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's kind of the general downfall in UT in general.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: You know, yeah, they go and get the most talented players out there, but do they fit what they need?
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: And I just don't think UT cares that much if they do fit what they need.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: I think it's all about perception and flash.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: I think that's all what that whole school is all about, completely top to bottom.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: I think Chris Beard kind of fits that because I mean, yeah, we can we can sit here and say all day long.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: We we really do have the reaffirmation of with that is that Coach Adams was the real architect of what TechStech basketball is.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: But Chris Beard, he's a he's a salesman and he wants to be in the spotlight, he wants to be the face of a program.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: That's what matters more than anything.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Whoever makes him a bigger face, I think matters the most.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: I hope I didn't go too off topic there, but I think just as just really reiterating the gap between what kind of coaches the two these two are.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I think you're right about that.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: I mean, I went on a podcast pretty recently and and kind of differentiated the styles of coaching that these two guys bring to a program.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: I I said it, I was like, Chris Beard's a salesman, Chris Beard's a motivator, but Mark Adams is a basketball coach, and that's what you're seeing.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: You're seeing a better basketball team at Texas Tech than you are at Texas right now, with what most would regard at Texas having better talent right now.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: And we are doing more with quote unquote less.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Now, I don't really buy into that much.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: I think we have extremely talented, extremely underlooked players right now, guys like Adonis and Bryson Williams and those type of players.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: But um, I yeah, I just I just think uh Beard has such a like a stranglehold almost on the media, you know, they just love the guy.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: And uh I was listening to the Raider land with Ryan Hyde and and Rob Rowe pretty recently, and they were talking about how that 2019 run almost did more for Chris Beard than it did for Texas Tech.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, and I think that's really that shouldn't be the case.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: You know, Chris Beard was fantastic, you know, he he built up this program uh, you know, a good ways, but a lot more went into it than Chris Beard.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: And we're seeing that now with Mark Adams and the style of basketball at Texas Tech.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, and tech Texas Tech Red Raider fans will lose their breath over saying it didn't just start with Coach Beard, and that's what gets so frustrating.
- 9:27SPEAKER_03: Whatever anyone, anybody on ESPN ever says is like, all these fans need to be grateful for what Coach Beard did at Texas Tech.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: Wherever it's like, no, that's not where it started.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, you can go all the way back to Bobby Knight and say that's where things really started picking up speed in Lubbock.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: And but really, we all know in in recent history it began with Tubby Smith.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: I'm so tired of hearing that Coach Beard is what really turned this program into something special.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: However, he did it with a lot of uh coach Tubby Smith players.
- 9:55SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're talking about Norzo Diasse, you know, and who was a superstar the other night.
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: You know, we could sit here and talk about all those players, and it just that's what really chaps, you know, my my gears over that kind of talk.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: But it's just it really can't be said enough that it was that what Tex Tech is, isn't just what Coach uh Beard was.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: And I think that's why the other night was so important to us.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: This is just prove to the nation, prove to the people that don't pay attention that no, Texas Tech basketball is here to stay, and it wasn't just one guy.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: So now we're going now we're going off topic.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: We will get to the game, but this what how we're going right now feeds into what I wanted to rant about, if you will let me right here.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: Of course, of course.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: Okay, so so as any Texas Tech fan does, I imagine, after a big win, you go and try to take in as much media as possible about the big win, the atmosphere, what everybody thought about it, national perception of it, local people talking about it, all sorts of stuff.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: So I listened to about every podcast that I could about after Texas Tech beat Texas.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: And and you know, mostly most of it was great.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: Everybody was like, Oh my god, this is one of the best atmospheres I've ever seen.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: This is really cool for Texas Tech to get this win.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: They're the better basketball team, except for one.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: And that was the CBS sports podcast I on college basketball.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: Um, the the host, the main host, they had two guys.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: One of them was all right, but the other one, his name's Gary Parrish.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: And I've never listened to this podcast before, but like I said, I was just searching Texas, Texas Tech, you know, and so I listened to it.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: And basically, instead of talking about the great win that Texas Tech had, he talked about um why we shouldn't be so mad at Chris Beard, you know, why Texas Tech fans, why are we so angry with Chris Beard?
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: Why are we so mad that he went to Texas?
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: Basically, he started off by saying every coach in college basketball would have done what Chris Beard did, which is just a lie.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: That's asinine.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: It's not to just flat out say that like a fact.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's not I yeah, he compared it to Chris Mack leaving Xavier for Louisville.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: And first off, Texas Tech is a much better program than what Xavier is.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: And now that's no that's no hate to Xavier, but they're a big e-school, they're a small Catholic school that just doesn't bring in a ton of revenue, they focus on one sport.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech is a freaking giant of college basketball right now.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, we are a sleeping giant of college basketball.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: We put in are we still sleeping?
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: I don't know if we're sleeping anymore.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of there's a lot of people talking about us, but obviously Gary's not talking about us much.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: But for for them to compare that, uh, it's also comparing UT to Louisville, which Texas in basketball has is not a blue blood.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: Like, let's not let's stop pretending that Texas is this blue blood of college basketball.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: They've been to one final four since 1950.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech has also been to one final four since 1950.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: But oh, by the way, it was three years ago.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Also, Texas has never made the championship game.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech has gone further than Texas has ever in college basketball.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: And can I take it?
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: Can I can I grab a pause with your comparison to that comparison?
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: Uh by saying that you know, you talk about how it's like going from Xavier to Louisville.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: All right, let's just say all things are even, let's just say all these programs are awesome and they're all blue bloods, all things are all the same, whatever.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: Xavier and Louisville are not rivals, and if they are, I've been out of this loop for a long time.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech does not hate any school more than the University of Texas, and it's for a lot of reasons.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: And for people to act to just brush that off, to act like that's that's not a factor is really stupid because I know it's everyone keeps saying that it's it's not that it's not the the the where it's the how.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: I disagree.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: I think the where is a huge part of why we hate him so much now.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: If he went off to Duke or North Carolina, this would not be the same conversation, it absolutely wouldn't be.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: And this, so I'm with you.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: And I mean it this kind of goes back to comparing the UT to any other blue blooded, which is just isn't the case because they're not a blue blood.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: So, anyway, it's just it's a lateral move at best at this point in time, and they went to our rival, and people just keep rushing that part off, like it shouldn't affect us emotionally.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: Continue with your rant.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: No, yeah.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, that was the next part of it because the next thing he said was he gets why we're mad, he gets why Texas Tech fans are mad at Chris Beard.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: He doesn't understand why it's so offensive that Beard left for Texas, and what you just said, it's called a rivalry.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: It's the same thing as Purdue, Indiana, it's the same thing as Duke, North Carolina, it's the same thing.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: This is a rivalry, it is.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: And for everybody just to act like it's not a big deal that he left from Texas Tech to Texas, just doesn't understand.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: They, I don't know where Gary went to school, I don't know what program he's affiliated with, if he ever was.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: He obviously doesn't know the Texas Tech Texas history and how much we absolutely despise that school.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: Put two to two together.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: This isn't hard.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: They're the Texas Longhorns, we're the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: Does that not just say, Oh, that's probably a rivalry because it's interstate, interconference?
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: That's just it's just so uh oblivious, it drives me crazy.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, that I mean, nothing pissed me off more than listening to this podcast after this.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: And uh, one last thing on it.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: He said he he asked the question, he posed the question for Texas Tech fans: why was Chris Beard not a scumbag when he left the UNLV job for Texas Tech versus when he left?
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: And why was he a scumbag when he left Texas Tech for Texas?
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: It's called the rivalry, Gary.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: I don't care about UNLV, I don't care about the rebels, they don't care about us.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: I don't mean to cut you off.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: I just I just want to add to that point that you know, comparing those again, another ass nine comparison.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: You know, look, that that was kind of a bad, bad deal with for UNLV, but I'm not I'm not trying to upset any rebel fans here, but going from UNLV to Texas Tech is a promotion, yeah.
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: It's a promotion, and I and I'm not saying that Texas Tech is the absolute premier basketball school, I would say we're up there now.
- 16:35SPEAKER_03: I think we're a great job now, but going from the rebs to the red Raiders is a huge leap.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: And plus, you know, there's there was that connection to Chris Beard to Texas Tech.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: And I get that was kind of a bad deal, but again, it just kind of comes back to the rivalry thing, and it's a lateral job at best now.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: That's all that's like that's just what's so frustrating about all this, yeah.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: And I mean, at this point, it's it's not a better job, it's just not.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: This program that Texas Tech has built has better facilities, has a better fan base, has better support from the higher-ups of the university.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: This is a better job.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: The boosters, I mean, we have we are putting in just as much money as UT is putting into this kind of stuff, and we have better fans, and we have a better athletic director.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's just it's clear to me.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: If you're just basing it, he brought up the whole the the Lubbock versus Austin thing.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: My God.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Again, it's not a thing.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: If if we just looked at location, SMU Vanderbilt, freaking Northwestern would be a fantastic school, yeah, and with great athletic departments, but they're not because location doesn't matter, it never has, and clearly you've never been to Lubbock because it's great.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: I say this over and over and over again how the vast majority of programs, especially the good ones, are in college towns.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: Lubbock, Texas, is a college town, but for some reason, anytime Lubbock is ever discussed, it is a negative, and I don't understand why only Lubbock is pointed out for being a negative college town.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: I don't understand it.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: I is it the isolation.
- 18:19SPEAKER_03: A lot of college towns are isolated from major metros.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: You just haven't put the map together in your head.
- 18:24SPEAKER_03: I just I don't it really, really frustrates me.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: That gets me going every time.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so let's let's stop that here.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: Uh it it pissed me off, and I'm glad that you added to this rant with me because that was something that pissed me off.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: But the this just brings it, just brings to head the way TechStech fans feel about the Chris Beard move and feel about UT.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: Like it's just all these frustrations compiled into one, and you have even more spicy things because the UT the UT has screwed us over even more with the SEC move.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: You know, they just they just piled on reasons for us to freaking hate them and we let them hear it, we let them have it.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: And I'm sure those UT players were shocked to see fans that actually care for once.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and that's why it felt so good.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: Yes, Texas Tech just beat Texas 77 to 64.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: It was never really close.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: There were some moments there in the second half where you're like, okay, it's getting a little too close for comfort here.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: I think they got within six, but overall, uh Texas Tech had this game.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: I was never worried about it.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: We talked about this yesterday.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: We were never really worried that that Texas was going to come in here and win.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: No, because the and I want to I want to start with the atmosphere because there's there has not and will not be a better atmosphere in college basketball than what we saw on Tuesday.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: The support, the camping out, the just absolute insanity that took place in the United Supermarkets arena on Tuesday night will not be matched.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: This student population, the alumni, the all the fans that paid a bunch of money to be at this freaking game.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was unbelievable to see.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: We witnessed history.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, Chris Peard only comes back to Leb for the first time once, and that's what we saw, that's what we experienced.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: And it just showed the entire country the kind of fan support this team has.
- 20:23SPEAKER_03: Because I I swear, every pretty much every major journalist that he was even remotely paying attention to the game was saying, This is insanity, this is mayhem, this is in a wonderful atmosphere, and that's what I love seeing.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: I love seeing a school like Texas Tech get that kind of credit because it's pretty rare on the on a major media stage, and just it's so good to see us really get the credit we deserve because our fans helped us win that game without question.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't think any team in the nation would have won that game against Texas Tech with that type of atmosphere, and just I it was so nuts.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: I can't, it's hard to put it into words because it was so loud in that freaking stadium.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: I don't like I don't know how all those people felt, but they had to have pounding headaches the next day just from all the yelling and everything, and that's credit to each and every one of y'all that was at that game and and gives a crap about this program because that was really cool.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: I was so jealous, it made me want to be a student again so badly.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: It took me back to our days there, but we saw nothing like that.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: I we saw some pretty dang good big games, but that was just different.
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: That was historic.
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: That was 2008 football level.
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: That was that was special, man.
- 21:35SPEAKER_03: And I'm so proud of our our our fan base for showing out like they did.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: So um, let's talk about.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: I want to run down the players here from both sides just to talk about the type of games they had and everything like that, because uh you can't start this conversation without talking about Kevin McCullough.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: Kevin McCullough was so gritty this game.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: He was this is what One out of Kevin McCullough was this type of game.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: Got to the free throw line 15 times, made 12 of those free throws, made big shots, played unbelievable defense, came back.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: You and me both predicted this, yeah, had a comeback game.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: This is what he needed, man.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: This is the game he needed to come back, and he did.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: He delivered, he got the most points on the entire team, and he was what really put the game away at the end.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: He just kept draining those free throws when we needed them so badly to keep them well out of arm's reach of getting even close to tying the game.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: And he just kept syncing them like it was his job, man.
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: That was really impressive.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: And my favorite Kevin McCullough moment for all time now is gonna be that three he made, and then the timeout happened.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: He just started prancing across the court, putting a three to his head.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: I I swear what he looked straight at the Texas bench when he was doing it too.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: So I mean, that's just sweet, sweet payback to that to that to that big-nosed guy on the other bench.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it felt so good for a came like one of his former players to do that to him.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, he was you could tell early on in the game, he really wanted a shot to fall, and he missed a couple of layups early.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: And he you could tell he was so upset that he didn't have one that fell.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: And these last few games, he's been in kind of a slump the last few games.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: He hasn't had a lot of shots falling.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: So when he got, I think it was when uh Malik Wilson got the steal, and then they had a fast break, and Kev got the and one right there.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: That must have felt so freaking good for Kevin McCullough to get that and one to see a shot fall.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: It was a layup, it was a tough layup, but he he saw the ball go through the hoop, and that was just confidence the rest of the way for him.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: Well, what more can you say than MVP?
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, he he deserves it, and just the he was the one player that I would have nobody else I would have wanted to do better than him, and he did.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: And it just felt so good because you know he's just a fighter, he's a leader, he's a veteran, and he just shows he shows what those types of players are supposed to do in games like this.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: I it just hats off to a man.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: That was a Jarek Culver level performance from Kevin Hyderabad.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: 100 taking over when he needed to.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, let's move on, though, to the other Kevin Kevin O'Banner.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, here he is.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the party, Oral Roberts, Kevin O'Banner.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: He has arrived.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: God, I was losing my mind.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: Five threes.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: This is the guy we've been looking for this whole time.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: 15 points from three-pointers.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, because I swear, anytime UT got a lucky ass three, he was just like, ah, no issue.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: Yeet it right back in.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: Man, did he make them pay from distance?
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: And that's what we thought we were getting all this time, but he really turned it on this game, man.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: And I love the way he'll interacting with the crowd.
- 24:48SPEAKER_03: I love anytime they do their fingers up to the crowd, you know, asking for more from the crowd after a big three.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: I eat that shit up.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and this is, I mean, you could just you could tell this guy puts in the work with his shot.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, all the time with all the reps that he's given.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: You saw on those last two three-pointers, the ones that one of them bounced high in the air off the rim and and managed to go in.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: The other one seemed like it just stopped at the rim and then trickled in.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's that's the shooter's role, baby.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: That's what he does, and and he deserved that type of performance because I know his three-pointer hasn't been fallen the majority of the season.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: And for him to go five of seven in such a massive game, that's it, your biggest moment of the season for him to shoot like this, that was huge for him.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: And that that's only building on his confidence, man.
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, I know he hasn't been a scoring machine pretty much all season, but you know, you and I, I don't think we've complained about him at all this whole time.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: Well, he's found different ways to be effective, he's found ways rebounding or scoring down low, getting dunks, like he's found a way of shooting, getting fouled, shooting free throws.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: But now, if you add this, oh my god, uh, I mean, it's just superstar the sky's the limit, dude.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: All big 12, without question, man.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: And it's it's it's so great to see us utilizing a transfer like him.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: And like you said, dude, he proved why you you take his shot over anyone else every single time.
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: And god, did it pay off this time?
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: I'm happy with every Kevin O'Banner shot.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: I don't care, I'm happy with it.
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: I don't care if he's 0 for 10.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, shoot it, Kev, because you're gonna make him uh you put in way too much work and way too much time to not come through when you need him.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: So I appreciate your Dexter's laboratory meme for the game.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: That's always a good one.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: That's always a quiet one.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: Uh he he definitely stunted on him this year.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: Uh no, but uh let's let's move on because it's it's crazy that we're talking about this guy third.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, a quiet 16 points, Bryson Williams.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, unbelievable from this kid.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: Uh he's and and I shouldn't say kid, he's like 23, but I mean everywhere he's such a he's a three-level scorer, dude.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: Every single area of the court, you have to be afraid of Bryson Williams.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: The the most historic picture from this game, the moment that we'll keep going back to was that amazing shot of Bryson Williams, who was recruited heavily by Mr.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: Beard on that bench, draining a three right in front of it, right in front of Beard, right in front of uh Avery Benson, just in just saw the whole UT bench just with their mouths wide open, staring at him do it, and it's and he sinks that shot, dude.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: I love seeing this out of Bryson Williams.
- 27:34SPEAKER_03: I wanted him to step up so bad because he picked us over UT.
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: It's just like, dude, go and show him why you picked the right program.
- 27:40SPEAKER_03: And boy did he, he has been a silent scoring machine these past few games.
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: I love how this guy has arrived.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, shout out Brandon Brager or Brager.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: Sorry if I that was the guy who took that awesome picture of Bryson Williams.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: That's an all-timer.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: Try to get everybody's gonna have that picture framed here pretty soon in their band game without question.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, no doubt.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: That was a it was a massive game.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: And and because of the connection with UT and Rodney Terry, who's now a coach over there with the Longhorns, uh, I this must have felt really good for Bryson.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: Um, and he did it everywhere, man.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: At the beginning, he was down low, uh, and then he he was hitting three pointers at the end.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh the I I look at this and I was like, I was really interested to see the matchup between him and Trey Mitchell because Trey Mitchell was a highly, highly touted transfer coming out of UMass.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: People said he was gonna be a uh whoever gets Trey Mitchell is getting a guy who can put up 20 points a night.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: And he just hasn't been that dude for UT this year.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: And seeing how Bryson Williams approached this game versus how Trey Mitchell played, I I mean, it's not even questionable that Bryson Williams was one of the best pickups of any team this offseason.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: I think and I think he chose well, I must say, Miss Mr.
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: Williams did.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: I'd I'd say so too.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: Um, a few more dudes, a few more dudes.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Um Davion Warren.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: Man, I can't.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: I love this guy.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: I've loved this guy since day one uh that he decided to come to this team.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, there was talks early on in the season.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: We need to bench uh Davion for Adonis Arms, we need to bench Davion Warren for Clarence Nedolny.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: There was people talking about that when Clarence had his good run.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, I never wanted to bench Davion Warren.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Davion Warren brings so much to this team that goes, it just slips under the cracks defensively.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: He is a freaking menace, man.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, staying in front of everybody, getting these steals, get drawing charges, he is completely bought in to Mark Adams' style of defense and style of play.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: And he's so crucial to how this team goes.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: And I mean, he made the biggest play of the night, in my opinion, uh, there with five minutes left in the game, where we're we're up 10, we're up pretty good, but there wasn't really any momentum going either team's way.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: And then all of a sudden, you see UT grabs the rebound off a missed shot, and they're going down the opposite way.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: Trey Mitchell tries to throw it to Courtney Raimi, and Davion Warren sees that shit a mile away and goes, steals the ball and gets a big time dunk.
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: We go up 12 with about I think it was like 455 left in the game.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: And I mean, that was the dagger.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: That was where tech just stole the momentum and just finished him off.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: And the USA roof blew right off.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, the word that comes to mind with this guy is relentless, he's non-stop, dude.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: He doesn't give up no matter which side of the court he's on, he doesn't get lazy, he doesn't he doesn't let up whatsoever.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: He brings the hammer down, full throttle 100.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: And that's I'm with you.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, why would you bench that guy?
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: That guy brings the energy, he keeps you moving up and down the whole time.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: And like you said, that that dagger, it's how do you how do you how do you quantify a dagger?
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: You don't, and that and he just puts an exclamation point on it, man.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: My head almost hit the ceiling when that play happened.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: I was so hyped up, it was nuts.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, Malik Wilson, also another guy that's gone under the radar.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: He's playing such unbelievable defense for us.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh, he got a few steals in this game, uh, and then he finished off with that that awesome dunk there at the end.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: Uh a few steals, uh, four, bro.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:23SPEAKER_02: Four.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, four steals.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: And that's just the type of defender he is, man.
- 31:27SPEAKER_02: And uh, I I really love what he's brought these last few games coming off that injury that he had, he had that minor surgery.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: So now he is he's back and he's he deserves these minutes.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: I know I love Clarence, but uh Malik Wilson deserves these minutes right now.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: No, I mean I I think Coach Adams is doing a great job balancing the minutes right now.
- 31:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't think he could have crafted a better game uh the other night in the and really distribute he's still distributed the minutes plenty.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, pretty much everybody saw the court.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, we almost had bocho hit a three.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: Oh, so close.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: But you know who clean you know who cleaned up that bocho miss and made it a positive play for us?
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Marcus Santos freaking Silva.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: The the freaking truck that he is.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: I'm so glad he came back, dude.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: He made so many key plays for us in this game.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: And you know, he's never gonna have a crazy stat line, but oh my god, I love Marcus Santos Silva.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: I love that he's taken a bench roll and embraced it and just comes in and plays hard whenever he gets on the court.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, a few people battled at the post like he did all night.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: He grabbed us four offensive boards.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, those second chance shots are huge, you know.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: And and just to see him fight, he never stops.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: No, he he never gets soft on going up for the ball, and that's what I love about him.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: And it's you just can't replace that sort of uh just bulliness that he just he's just a bull down there and he'll just push you right off because he's a big man.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: And I just I love the way he goes if it grabs every single board, and it's just that's just huge.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: That's just it's not sexy, but it it wins you games.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: It does when uh late in the game, another huge play.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: Davion Warren missed a three.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: Marcus San Josilva there to grab the offensive rebound, pulls it out, bounce pass right inside to a cutting Davion Warren who just missed a shot, but yet he's going and driving come to the basket.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: He gets an and one.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's just that's both of those guys right there, yeah.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: Just relentless making winning plays.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 33:17SPEAKER_03: There's this this team has no quitting them, they have no stop.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: Yep, no doubt.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: Um, Adonis Arms, not a not a good scoring uh show from him, but he did everything else.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, nine rebounds and four assists.
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: He made his presence well known, even when his shot's not falling.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: I love Adonis.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: I I know I know our buddy Clay, he's he's his favorite player.
- 33:38SPEAKER_03: He's he's too athletic to to stop, he's too athletic to have a bad game.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: The guy's just a freak.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: He flies around.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: If he's not scoring, he's gonna be your nightmare on defense, or he's grabbing the ball off the post.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: He's the guy cannot be stopped.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: He's gonna do what he wants to do, even if it's not lighting up the scoreboard.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: And I just he's he's filled in for TJ so dang well.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: And he really, he really did a great job that night.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: And and I don't know, it might be the coolest video.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: While while Bryson has the best picture, I think Adonis has the best video with the uh this the let's get ready to rumble as he's cheering on the crowd as he walks up to the uh the the uh the beginning of the game.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the tip off right there.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was yeah, that was a that was a really cool shot.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: Shouts out Texas Tech basketball media team, they did a fantastic job capturing all of this past few days and and making some really cool hype up videos.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: Um, they do a great job over there.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: Uh TJ Shannon got in at the very end there.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: Um I didn't even notice.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: Very weird.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, the guy's clearly hurt.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: The guy, I mean, but Adams felt compelled to have him finish the game when it's not necessarily over.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, we had you know an eight to 12 point lead the majority of the time Shannon was in, but you know, he got in there, drove to the basket, got a nice layup there.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, almost had a really nice put back at the very end when the game was pretty much over.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, for for Shannon to get in there in the clutch moments, uh, it just kind of a weird.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: I've never seen anything like that where you're the first time the guy goes in is the very end of a pretty tight game for the most part.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, putting an injured player in like that, what came to my mind was spark plug, like just to really ramp up the crowd, really ramp up the team to put this away.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: And I think that's what he did.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, he only two points, but like you said, he has this awesome drive, he plays his butt off on defense no matter what.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: But I think what really happened was I think TJ said this game is too important to me, coach.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: I need to go in, I need to step on that court, I need to, I need to put put to shame my old coach.
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: And I think that's what happened.
- 35:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, I just I love seeing him out there.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know he'll hurt him.
- 35:39SPEAKER_03: I don't, I don't think I don't think coach Adams just flat out put him out there.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: I think he has to go.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: I think that's probably what happened.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I could definitely see that.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: TJ's that type of guy that wants to be out there with his teammates, and you know, no matter what.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: And we've seen that all season, he's fought through injury the entire year, and so uh I thought that was cool.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: Um, UT man, UT did not look good the majority of this game.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: This uh that first half.
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: If Raimi doesn't throw in three of those crap three pointers that he made in the first half, they would have been down 20.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: It just I like uh UT's offense is so bad.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, like you said, you you put it on Twitter and it really looked like they were playing scared.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're they were taking all these long distance shots, they didn't want to get into the paint whatsoever because of a certain defensive mind on the other team.
- 36:25SPEAKER_03: But dude, they just like you said, man, I they seemed shaky the entire first half.
- 36:30SPEAKER_03: Like it wasn't even close the first half.
- 36:31SPEAKER_03: I mean, we we went into the half up double digits, it was like we were we controlled the game, and you're right, those rain, those rainy shots, while impressive, they're really really only going in the first half.
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: It wasn't happening much in the second half.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: Um, so he he got quite lucky, you know, hats off to throwing in those freak shots.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: But dude, I mean, what more can you say than we were just terrorizing them?
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, he went, I believe, four of five in the first half, and then he didn't make another one the whole rest of the game.
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, and Jones was Andrew Jones was bad.
- 37:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, one of seven off the bench, I hope five from three.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: Uh Devin Aski, one of two, he only had three points.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: February's airballed a shot, he was one to three.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Um, Timmy Allen.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: This is their leading scorer, Timmy Allen.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: Five points, five rebounds, two of six from the field, two turnovers.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: Completely took him out of this game.
- 37:24SPEAKER_02: Um, and this is a guy who he makes his living in the middle.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: What is our defense?
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: The no-middle defense.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: We completely took him out of the game.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, and you you have to wonder like, with how poor of an offensive performance, I know that's not uncommon with UT, and it's just it's a problem with Chris Beards' team.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: We saw that with a cut last couple seasons with us, uh, even though I forgot that he was already our basketball coach anyway.
- 37:49SPEAKER_03: But but dude, I mean, whenever we whenever we're talking about stuff like this, I feel like we can't rule out rule out what the environment was, what the crowd was.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: I do think there's another reason why they were playing scared.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: I don't think it's just because they're going up against probably the best defense of the conference, I think it's because they're going up against this crowd they've probably never seen before in their entire lives.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: And just it was probably deafening, ear splitting on the court.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: That takes you out of it.
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, how can you get into the offensive groove like that if you can't shut them up?
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: You know, you have to score to shut them up.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, you can.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, clearly, in the first half, they were just lucky to have made uh the few threes that they did to keep them in at timely spots.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: But uh, and then the second half, they they you know, Marcus Carr showed himself and what he is as a basketball player.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: He's a very good basketball player, you know.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: He he got to the free throw line.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: I thought Christian Bishop had a pretty good game off the bench.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: He was grabbing some rebounds, almost tried to fight Kevin McCullough there uh in the second half.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: So they finally showed a little tenacity, but um, you know, I I would be I would be remiss if we didn't talk about uh one of my correct predictions, which was uh Chris Beard's gonna throw Avery Benson in there pretty early in this game.
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: You are an Oracle, you are you are a fortune teller, my man.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: I just I just knew Beard is too much of a showman for him not to do that, and it only bit them in the butt.
- 39:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: Because what did we say on the podcast?
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: We're happy if Avery Benson is on the floor because one of their better players is not on the floor.
- 39:21SPEAKER_03: Last in the dev chart, man.
- 39:22SPEAKER_03: Last in the UT dev chart, yeah.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: And then he goes and they they clearly run a play for him, and he gets a pretty open look from three, bricks it, and then the crowd the crowd just goes wild after he misses the three-pointer, and it was fabulous.
- 39:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, we were booing the crap out of him when we came out, and I mean a lot of people are saying that he doesn't deserve it.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: I think he does.
- 39:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, I you give him hell, you give him hell.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: He look, he could have he was probably a great guy when he was here.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he left for the longhorns, he left for one dude, you left the whole community of people for one dude.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: You're no longer loved or liked in Lubbock when you put on the burnt orange, you just aren't.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: No, no, at least for you and me.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: I don't know if we're just petty or what, but no, no, what a what a perfect moment.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: Him bricking it as bad as he did couldn't have been written better.
- 40:13SPEAKER_03: Like it was a mad, it was one of the best moments in the game.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and and uh I wouldn't I oh I I was loving this too.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, UT gets there the night before for their shoot around, they come in on their bus.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: Obviously, Texas Tech students are surrounding them, chanting profanities and uh you know, saying F U T, all that kind of stuff.
- 40:35SPEAKER_02: And who comes out of the bus but Brock Cunningham?
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: Their best player, the culture hustle guy off the bench, blue guy, comes off with without with his shirt unbuttoned, holding up the hook em to the whole student populace that was chanting F U T.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: He goes out here and he just puts on a show, man.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: Three points, one rebound, no assists, uh no, no blocks, one steal, uh, five fouls.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: He fouls out, right?
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: He fouled out of this game.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: Glue guy.
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: What a joke!
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: Enjoy the hates.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: What a joke.
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: You are the last man that needs to come out here and throw up the hook'em in front of the rest of the tech students.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: Marcus Carr needs to do that.
- 41:28SPEAKER_02: That's Marcus Carr's job.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: That's not your freaking job.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: You're averaging two and a half points a game, bro.
- 41:35SPEAKER_03: I feel like his teammates were like, What are you doing?
- 41:38SPEAKER_03: Do you not see what they're how mad they are out there?
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: Do you want to make them even worse tomorrow?
- 41:44SPEAKER_03: You mad man?
- 41:45SPEAKER_03: And dude, I whenever that happened, I immediately knew that we were already in their heads.
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: If if we're not phasing you, you don't go out there.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: You just you just put on your headphones and walk into the whatever room they were going to, and you don't even think about it.
- 41:57SPEAKER_03: You just you just get ready for the game.
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: But no, he was so drawn in by real fans.
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: He was like, What are those fans out there?
- 42:03SPEAKER_03: I had to go see this for myself.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: And he gets out there and sees everybody.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: And dude, I love how bad he played, dude.
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: He played so badly.
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: He fouled out, he had five fouls.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: He could have had nine.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: Honestly, there were so many times in this game where he he's not strong enough to hold up rebounding with a Kevin O'Banner or Bryson Williams.
- 42:26SPEAKER_02: He shoved O'Banner so many times that went uncalled on the on free throws, on whatever, trying to grab a rebound.
- 42:33SPEAKER_02: And he's just he's such a scrub.
- 42:38SPEAKER_03: God, dude.
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: Man, I just this this game couldn't have gone more perfectly for a tech fan.
- 42:44SPEAKER_03: Could it have?
- 42:45SPEAKER_02: No, I mean, this was just about the perfect outcome for us.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, obviously, we still have to go play them in Austin, which should be basically another home game for us.
- 42:53SPEAKER_03: See y'all there.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, we will be there.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: See y'all there.
- 42:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, shout, like, if y'all have a a bar recommendation or wherever Texas Tech fans tend to meet up when tech comes to Austin, let us know and we'll let the people know via Twitter.
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: Uh, so we can all just have a ball that weekend.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: I know it's gonna be a good time, but um, you know, we still do have to play them in Austin.
- 43:14SPEAKER_02: It's still UT, they're not a bad team.
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, so you know, you got to bring your A game.
- 43:19SPEAKER_02: But with how we played that night, I just see our momentum going up.
- 43:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure, man.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: And I really do think we took the wind out of the horns against us.
- 43:27SPEAKER_03: I think uh us beating them, I think is really gonna suck the atmosphere out of the Irwin, you know, as much of the atmosphere that could be found there.
- 43:34SPEAKER_03: I do, you know, it's already being seen on Twitter that a bunch of Longhorn fans are putting up their tickets for sale for the game.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: Um, so even more Red Raiders can go, uh, especially once the prices keep dropping.
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, to go back to our game, and to before we wrap this up, I just want to say how proud I am of Raiderland and how they acted during the game.
- 43:56SPEAKER_03: I think UT fans wanted us to do something stupid.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Stupid, probably more than beat us.
- 44:02SPEAKER_03: They probably wanted one of our fans to either throw something on the court, or you know, a whole bunch of fans throw stuff on the court or start at altercation with a player or a staff member.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: I feel like they wanted that to happen more than beat us, just so they can go on their little hissy fit, go on their holier than thou ivory tower train about how you know who cares about this game, they're just trash people kind of thing.
- 44:22SPEAKER_03: We didn't even let them have that.
- 44:24SPEAKER_03: We kicked their ass and we kicked their ass at being fans.
- 44:27SPEAKER_03: That's what happened the other night.
- 44:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, that's a that's a great way to put it.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: I thought everybody affiliated with Texas Tech did a great job prior to the game of kind of letting people know that we're not going to tolerate any sort of you know ridiculousness of throwing stuff on the court or getting technical fouls, something that would hurt the team.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, I you know, getting Norrance out there and Joey McGuire out there to talk to everybody prior to the game while still hyping them up, but letting them know, hey, you know, be responsible.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: Don't let us look bad through this whole thing.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: Every podcast was saying it, every uh media outlet was saying it.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, and and uh this fan base just did a fantastic job.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: This entire game, they showed the world what Texas Tech is about and that we are a passionate group without going over the top.
- 45:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we we take a backseat to nobody, we're not an afterthought.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: We we are proud of who we are and what we can bring.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: You know, we're we're just as serious about it as anybody else out there, and maybe maybe even more so.
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: And I just I'm so proud of our our fans and the way the USA was blowing up.
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: I I just you gotta think whether Chris Beard left that court, you know.
- 45:37SPEAKER_03: I you gotta feel like there's a some singe of regret of what you know, that's what I helped, you know, create.
- 45:46SPEAKER_03: Then I just abandoned it, you know.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: Like he looked exhausted after this game in the post-game press conference in the handshake line.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: He just looked like he was so done with it.
- 45:57SPEAKER_02: And that he uh I mean, you have to think if you're Chris Beard, and I know he's in the first year, new program, he's making money, whatever.
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: Dude, you gotta look at that.
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: What you've seen at Frank Irwin Center all year, and then you go into Lubbock and you see that type of freaking wild atmosphere that was just there that you helped create.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: You, I mean, there's got to be at least a little bit of regret.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I you know, I I whatever you can be hard-headed or whatever, but uh man, I anybody in the world would tell you that Texas Tech has a better fan base right now than you two.
- 46:31SPEAKER_03: Oh well, without question, and I I keep I feel like I keep getting reminded over and over again that this is a one sport fan base that we just went up against.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it seems like only one sport matters to them.
- 46:40SPEAKER_03: Um, because you no matter what, they'll still still put post the football score and all that.
- 46:45SPEAKER_03: But um, man, it just unbelievable.
- 46:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, we don't have to promise our students cupcakes or mimosas to get to the game.
- 46:53SPEAKER_03: We promise them a fun atmosphere and something to cheer for, and it's just something that can't be said in Austin.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: And I'm so proud of it.
- 46:58SPEAKER_03: I can't believe Chris Beard wanted to shrink the USA.
- 47:01SPEAKER_03: He wouldn't have been able to fit 15,000 strong into a smaller arena.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: Come on, it could have been even bigger.
- 47:06SPEAKER_03: Fill up a football stadium for that crap.
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
- 47:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was nuts.
- 47:10SPEAKER_02: It's a great game, great day, great everything.
- 47:13SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech Rocks.
- 47:14SPEAKER_02: We beat Chris Beard.
- 47:17SPEAKER_03: And that wasn't our Super Bowl, or that wasn't our national championship.
- 47:21SPEAKER_02: Dude, we still have a whole freaking state or a whole freaking schedule to go through now.
- 47:26SPEAKER_02: And we have a we have a couple tough games coming up.
- 47:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, um, let's let's just kind of get into that before we get into signing day.
- 47:32SPEAKER_02: Let's just stay on the basketball train right here.
- 47:34SPEAKER_02: Um, couple big games coming up, uh, both of them away games.
- 47:38SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech so far, as good as we have been this season, is one and three in conference play at on away games.
- 47:46SPEAKER_02: So uh not not a great showing on the road for Texas Tech.
- 47:50SPEAKER_02: Our one win what was against Baylor.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: Great one win, great pickup, number one team at the time.
- 47:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, we took Kansas to double overtime at the fog.
- 48:00SPEAKER_02: We almost beat Iowa State with seven players.
- 48:03SPEAKER_02: We blew one against Kansas State in our fourth game in eight days.
- 48:07SPEAKER_02: So there's valid excuses for these away game losses, but that record needs to improve because right now you can look at everything that went on, people are still gonna see one and three on the road so far.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: So we need to pick up some big time wins here.
- 48:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't think this team is about excuses at all.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: I don't think Mark Adams is by any means an excuse guy.
- 48:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no question in my mind.
- 48:28SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, there's probably no sport to win on the road harder than college basketball.
- 48:33SPEAKER_03: Just for some reason, it just seems to winning your home games is immensely more important than winning on the road.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: But you're right.
- 48:40SPEAKER_03: If we want to get that Big 12 trophy, we got to really turn it on.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're a game and a half behind the Kansas Jayhawks, we're having a great year, but we we're just as good as them.
- 48:48SPEAKER_03: I really do think that.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: It's just, but you're right, we gotta we we can't just we can't keep beating in these tough spots on the road where we have a lot of injured players or we're really tired.
- 48:57SPEAKER_03: It's just it's really gonna time to start turning those L's into dubs.
- 49:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and that's why this stretch is so important because we do we start off this Saturday, the 5th at 1 p.m.
- 49:07SPEAKER_02: We go to Morgantown and play West Virginia.
- 49:10SPEAKER_02: Um place to win.
- 49:11SPEAKER_02: It's a tough place to win, it's a tough environment.
- 49:14SPEAKER_02: Those those fans really care up there and they're rowdy, uh, even though their team has kind of fallen lately.
- 49:20SPEAKER_02: You know, they've lost a uh a bunch of games in a row.
- 49:23SPEAKER_02: Uh Taz Sherman is questionable for this game, which is uh could be obviously a good thing if you know he he went off when they came to Lubbock and he had a great game.
- 49:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, if he doesn't play, there's not a lot of scoring uh from from the rest of the guys.
- 49:38SPEAKER_02: But again, it's in Morgantown, it's in West Virginia, so it's always a tough game there.
- 49:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're talking about a guy that's averaging 19 points a game.
- 49:46SPEAKER_03: That's that's pretty pretty decent, right that beats it that beats anybody we have uh in in and points per game, but obviously we're a more complete team.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: Um, we're talking about a West Virginia team that is dead last in the Big 12.
- 49:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's there shouldn't be really an excuse made uh with an L this one.
- 50:02SPEAKER_03: If it's an L, that's just a hard L.
- 50:04SPEAKER_03: Kind of like the Kansas State game was.
- 50:05SPEAKER_03: Um, we gotta go and get this one.
- 50:07SPEAKER_03: This is a must.
- 50:08SPEAKER_03: I think this is a must-win, especially on the road with how bad our road record has been in the conference.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, but uh, we say it every week.
- 50:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, the Big 12 is the hardest conference in the country, and every home game is an absolute battle.
- 50:17SPEAKER_03: West Virginia is one of the biggest ones in battle-wise.
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, they have awesome fans, so it's we definitely gotta bring it.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: But this we have no excuse to lose to the dead last team.
- 50:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're well, you're looking at who's last in the Big 12, West Virginia and Oklahoma State.
- 50:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like come on, man.
- 50:35SPEAKER_02: Like every single one of these teams is really is really good to solid.
- 50:41SPEAKER_02: Okay, and both of these teams that are coming up are solid.
- 50:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, the other one being Oklahoma.
- 50:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, we traveled to Norman.
- 50:49SPEAKER_02: First time we played the Sooners this year.
- 50:51SPEAKER_02: That's gonna be on Wednesday, the 9th at 8 p.m.
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman.
- 50:56SPEAKER_02: Um, Oklahoma's still a good team, man.
- 50:58SPEAKER_02: They're in the first year of a new head coach as well after Lon Kruger retired.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: They now bring on uh Porter Moser from uh Loyola, Chicago.
- 51:07SPEAKER_02: Everybody knows about their final four run, and then I think they had another pretty deep run after that, but uh he's a great coach and they have some solid pieces.
- 51:15SPEAKER_02: Uh so again, it's just another game that is gonna be gritty and gonna be tough.
- 51:20SPEAKER_02: And OU's the OU's brought in a lot of good teams to the wire here.
- 51:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, and and both of these games are are kind of the same deal.
- 51:28SPEAKER_02: You just have to you just have to get these.
- 51:31SPEAKER_03: 100.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, this OU team is tied for six with four other teams in the Big 12.
- 51:36SPEAKER_03: So it after sixth place you're last.
- 51:38SPEAKER_03: So that's that's how it's working right now.
- 51:40SPEAKER_03: Um, but not quite as hostile as an environment as the Mountaineers are in in Norman.
- 51:44SPEAKER_03: No, no, but uh, so that's another we should be going, we should be going to this week two and uh all right, ending this week two and uh, and it's it's it's a great time to kind of get things back together, really solidify our place in at least second place in the Big 12, hopefully.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: Um, maybe even first if things go right.
- 52:00SPEAKER_03: So it's you know, it's a it's we're here in the second half stretch of the conference play.
- 52:04SPEAKER_03: It's time to really start getting those road wins, and I think this is a great place to start.
- 52:08SPEAKER_03: This is a good place to start kind of building momentum on the road, building some steam because you're so much better than these two teams, they're good teams, but TechStech is so much better.
- 52:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 52:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, but both both these teams have really solid players.
- 52:20SPEAKER_02: OU.
- 52:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, I know we were in the run-in to get Jordan Goldwire, the Duke transfer.
- 52:25SPEAKER_02: He's been playing pretty solid for Oklahoma this year.
- 52:27SPEAKER_02: He's a good defensive player.
- 52:29SPEAKER_02: Uh, they have the Goofy brothers that kind of took over uh the the NCAA tournament last year with Eastern Washington.
- 52:35SPEAKER_02: Uh Jacob and Tanner Groves.
- 52:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, I know there was a bunch of memes about those guys.
- 52:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think I think Tanner Groves put up 30 something points against Kansas in the tournament last year.
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: So uh he's been a solid piece for them.
- 52:48SPEAKER_02: Uh Moshe Gibson, he can shoot the rock.
- 52:50SPEAKER_02: He's a he's a quick little guard there.
- 52:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, and they just have a solid, solid team.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: You know, it's not bad.
- 52:56SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's not fantastic, but it's solid.
- 52:59SPEAKER_02: And yeah, both of these teams could squeak out a win here, and that's why you got to keep this same energy going on the road to try to get these wins.
- 53:06SPEAKER_02: Are you worried about a hangover at all?
- 53:08SPEAKER_02: No, I'm not.
- 53:09SPEAKER_02: I think we're riding, I think we're riding high, but I also trust in Mark Adams to you know keep this team level headed.
- 53:16SPEAKER_02: And we're such a veteran team.
- 53:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, all these guys have been through the ringer and back, you know, when it comes to Bryson Williams and Kevin O'Banner, they haven't necessarily been with Texas Tech through the ringer, but they've been in college basketball.
- 53:28SPEAKER_02: They know what getting a big win is like, and they know that this isn't the end game, you know.
- 53:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they know that beating UT does not end the season.
- 53:35SPEAKER_02: So they we have much higher aspirations this season than just beating UT.
- 53:39SPEAKER_02: We're still going after the Big 12 championship here.
- 53:42SPEAKER_02: We're still going after a deep run in March.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, these guys still have so much to play for, and I think Mark Adams does a good job of celebrating the big ones, but also getting them prepared for the next one.
- 53:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, by every metric, the better team won last Tuesday.
- 53:56SPEAKER_03: You know, you in any way you look at them.
- 53:58SPEAKER_03: I it just it's just the emotional hangover, is what I was alluding to, obviously.
- 54:01SPEAKER_03: I don't think it was just like it wasn't an upset or anything like that.
- 54:03SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, no doubt.
- 54:04SPEAKER_03: We we covered so yeah.
- 54:07SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's I I just yeah, I did I just was wondering if there was any concern with that, but I think there's also a lot of time space.
- 54:12SPEAKER_03: Tuesday was a long time ago at this point, uh, expect whenever we whenever this at this point in the season.
- 54:17SPEAKER_03: So I'm not worried about that.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: So I just I expect this to get things done.
- 54:20SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, man, anything else to talk about with basketball?
- 54:23SPEAKER_02: Uh no, I think that's it, man.
- 54:25SPEAKER_02: We just got to get a couple couple more wins and and hope Kansas hope kansas loses a few, hope Baylor loses a few, and you're right there in the running.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: So sorry, Joe.
- 54:33SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, sorry, Joe Goodman.
- 54:35SPEAKER_02: You're you're one of the good Jay Good Goodmans out there, but uh we gotta we're hoping for Baylor L's.
- 54:41SPEAKER_02: Actually, we probably hope they beat Kansas on here on Saturday because Kansas number one right now.
- 54:45SPEAKER_02: But um I I did want to say there are some similarities right now between this team and the 2019 team because this is about the point in the season where the 2019 team went on a run and won our last few Big 12 games.
- 54:59SPEAKER_02: I think we won like our last six or seven Big 12 games to eventually give us that title.
- 55:05SPEAKER_02: So, you know, you're riding high on this momentum, you want to keep this going, get a tuple uh a couple tough road wins.
- 55:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then you you know, you still have Baylor on the schedule, you still have to go to Austin and uh all these other games.
- 55:17SPEAKER_03: So um, yeah, I and I trust Coach Adams to keep him laser focused to get that mission done.
- 55:22SPEAKER_03: And just before we move on, I just you know, you brought up Jay Goodman.
- 55:25SPEAKER_03: Talk about a redemption story for Jeff Goodman, dude.
- 55:28SPEAKER_03: Incredible stuff from him all week.
- 55:30SPEAKER_03: Love seeing him just really embrace the fan base and just have fun with it.
- 55:33SPEAKER_03: He didn't like he didn't overthink it, he wasn't like overly professional about any of it.
- 55:38SPEAKER_03: He just seemed like a basketball fan all week, and it was just fun to see.
- 55:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, Jeff Goodman's one of the I guess one of the good ones now.
- 55:46SPEAKER_02: Um uh, but this is that's what national media people need to do.
- 55:51SPEAKER_02: They need to go to Lubbock, they need to go see a game there, go experience the fans, you'll realize that we're pretty cool, all right?
- 55:58SPEAKER_02: The atmosphere's great, Lubbock's not that bad, you know, it's good stuff, man.
- 56:04SPEAKER_01: So more people, it's easy to get to.
- 56:07SPEAKER_01: You got to from Boston to Lubbock in two flights.
- 56:12SPEAKER_01: Fantastic.
- 56:13SPEAKER_01: It's not hard to get to.
- 56:16SPEAKER_03: That's just so cool, man.
- 56:17SPEAKER_03: It's good, it's just just good to see guys that aren't too good, just you know, just keep sticking to their guns and just it was just great to see.
- 56:24SPEAKER_02: Yep, go visit Lubbock, all you national media people that aren't listening to this podcast.
- 56:29SPEAKER_02: Um, let's move on from basketball.
- 56:32SPEAKER_02: A great week of basketball, uh, and hopefully many more weeks of greatness to come.
- 56:38SPEAKER_02: Um, National Signing Day happened uh for football.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: Normally, if all this didn't happen, this would be probably what we opened up the pod with.
- 56:47SPEAKER_02: But um, no, I mean, football national signing day, it's not as big a deal anymore because of the early signing period.
- 56:54SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 56:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, we had the majority of our class signed there.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: So we only had three high school kids signing on National Signing Day.
- 57:01SPEAKER_02: Um, and then the rest of them were basically transfers, but we wanted to run through those with you guys and kind of just keep you updated in the know of what Joey McGuire has coming in, his first year as head coach.
- 57:12SPEAKER_02: Um, the three high school guys, Eric Gray.
- 57:15SPEAKER_02: This was a dude that we talked about in the initial class in the early signing period that we were wondering why he didn't sign in the early signing period.
- 57:23SPEAKER_02: And uh, I mean, he's a three-star O-lineman, four-star, wherever you look uh from Amarillo, and you know, we want to keep the West Texas guys here.
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: And we were a little concerned because he was getting some looks at from you know programs like OU and and you know, UT was looking at him.
- 57:40SPEAKER_02: And so you were happy that we locked this kid down.
- 57:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I I this this was one of the first ones that you wanted to see.
- 57:46SPEAKER_03: And it's just uh Joey Maguire is gonna do what Matt Wells claims say he'll do, and that was build up a fence around West Texas uh tremendously, but uh he did not do it so well, he did not do it so tremendously.
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: Uh Joe Joey Maguire going after these guys and just landing them, getting them away from big guys like that.
- 58:02SPEAKER_03: You know, you got to make sure that these kids in West Texas dream of going to Texas Tech.
- 58:05SPEAKER_03: And I think Joey Maguire is doing a great job beating that.
- 58:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: We want some big boys, yeah.
- 58:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 58:12SPEAKER_02: Well, he's recruited a ton of them.
- 58:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's been all about the trenches with Joey Maguire so far, whether it's D-line or O-line, he's getting those big boys to come here.
- 58:21SPEAKER_02: Um, moving on with the high school guys.
- 58:23SPEAKER_02: This was kind of an interesting little flip here.
- 58:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, Gavin Freeman, who was originally committed to Texas Tech, uh, decided to take a potential walk-on spot with the Sooners of Oklahoma.
- 58:36SPEAKER_02: He's an Oklahoma kid.
- 58:37SPEAKER_02: Um, and and now he decided not to sign with Texas Tech, and he's gonna try a walk-on spot with the with the Sooners.
- 58:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, we uh but you know, the whole thing here, I think he kind of just lost his spot.
- 58:50SPEAKER_02: It wasn't, I I think it was less about him making this decision and more about us deciding to go with the three-star wide receiver from Stevenville in Koy Eakin.
- 59:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, it's it's there's a lot going into it.
- 59:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, apparently, this kid, apparently his dad played at OU, you know, like you said, he's an Oki, but it's just a bizarre decision in general to pick a walk on over a scholarship.
- 59:12SPEAKER_03: I just I don't think I've seen that before.
- 59:14SPEAKER_03: I think it's it's kind of a strange decision, but like you said, maybe a lot more has to play into it with us maybe roping in and maybe a more talented wide receiver.
- 59:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I mean, just potentially it may have not even been his decision, it may have been Joey Maguire saying, Hey, yeah, you know, Wells recruited you.
- 59:29SPEAKER_02: I didn't really recruit you, so you know, I I don't know, you may want to try somewhere else, and that's you know, that's nobody's fault.
- 59:36SPEAKER_02: That's just kind of how it plays out sometimes.
- 59:38SPEAKER_02: So uh we did get the three-star wide receiver Koy Eakin from Steven Bill.
- 59:41SPEAKER_02: So that's another wide receiver we're adding to the roster.
- 59:43SPEAKER_02: Last high school kid, a Texas Tech legacy.
- 59:48SPEAKER_02: Sammy Morris, the fourth, coming in uh from Prosper High School.
- 59:52SPEAKER_02: He's a cornerback and a return man.
- 59:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, I don't know how highly talented he was coming out of high school, how good a player, but he's a legacy.
- 59:59SPEAKER_02: Sammy Morris is on the current staff, so this was just bound to happen.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_03: Oh, for sure.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_03: And then building rapport in a town like Prosper is not a bad move.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's a huge high school, very talented high school.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, you gotta bring your legacy players in.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_03: And you know, we we one of the reasons why we brought on Joe McGuire is to find these truly find these diamond in a roughs where these high school coaches are like, no, you gotta look at this kid.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_03: Like, I know that he's not all over these boards, but you know, he's this kid can ball.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_03: So I mean, I'm really hoping that's it's one of those cases as well.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_03: So it's just kind of a wrapped up package with that, more than just getting a highly touted dude.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_02: So um, those were the only three high school kids we signed uh on signing day.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_02: Uh a bunch of transfers signed, uh, guys that we've already talked about, Cade Briggs, Michael Shanahan, Monroe Mills.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_02: All these guys are offensive linemen transfers uh from uh some of them pretty big time schools.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, Monroe Mills is coming from Oklahoma State.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: Uh Shanahan was a standout from UT Martin.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_02: Cade Briggs was really good uh for New Mexico.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_02: Uh Jacob Rodriguez is a safety transfer from Virginia.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, he he's kind of a weird story.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_02: He's like a former quarterback, turned defensive back.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_02: So he's coming in.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_02: I know some people were a little concerned that we were getting a quarterback transfer.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's like, no, we got more quarterbacks, we're fine.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_03: You're not you with no more quarterbacks at tech for now.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I think we're good with having to choose uh this difficult decision between the three we already have.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_02: So uh a couple more guys to run down.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_02: Blake Bedwell is a running back transfer from SMU.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_02: Jordan Brown is a wide receiver transfer from Kansas, obviously.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_02: Uh Emma Jones has now rejoined the staff here at Texas Tech.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_02: He was at Kansas, so this is one of his guys.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_02: So he obviously sees something in him.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, another wide receiver, Hayden Wiggington from uh actually OU.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_02: He's a transfer from OU.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_02: So that's uh you know, for him to get recruited over there, that's pretty big time.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_02: And then another legacy, Drew Ho Cut.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_02: I maybe have heard that last name before in my life, uh and he's from Angelo, San Angelo State, man.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech School.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_03: Yep, just just you know transferring within the system, yeah.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_02: You know, no, no sort of uh ties to the school at all.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_03: Uh go Rams, though.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, go Rams, big big Angelo school.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_02: We're big Rams guys, big Rams guys over here on the talking tech pod.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_02: Uh, no, but yeah, that's just funny having Kirby's son get over here and yeah, that is really program.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_02: You know, I'm not sure how much he's gonna play, probably not much, but you know, he's he's here.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_03: And he's is Kirby Hoke gonna gonna hoe us and and get Joey wire fired over his playing time.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_03: No, just no chance.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_03: No, what a wild story that would be.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that would be I would I I think I might uh die from depression or something like that.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, that's that's not happening.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_02: Uh couple more, a couple more transfers from community colleges, Dennis Wilburn and James Grando, uh, both of those coming from community college.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_02: Apparently, most of these guys are coming in as walk-ons, actually.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, so you know, we'll see uh who ends up potentially getting a scholarship, who ends up actually playing and being a part of this team next year.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_02: But that was what signing day was.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_03: And now we'll probably lay off football until summer, man.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_03: But it's it's just it's so good to see juice injected so powerfully back into this stagnant program.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_03: And I just love what Joey McGuire's brought to the campus.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_03: Seeing him before the game with Norton's Odease pumping up the crowd, it's just that's what I want out of my coaches.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_03: I want a guy so involved, you know.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_03: Matt Wells tried, but it's just so genuine and comes so easy to Joey Maguire.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_03: You know, he's out there passing out pizza to all the campers and stuff like that.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_03: He just he's so bought in.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_02: Joey was fantastic all weekend, he's been fantastic since he set foot on campus.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_02: So uh, no, no, uh, no regrets about the Joey Maguire hire so far.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, we'll obviously see.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_02: And and we're gonna be talking about spring ball too.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_02: So that's coming up here pretty soon.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, football's nonstop these days, dude.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_02: So we're we're always gonna be talking about football.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_02: Luckily for us as well.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_02: Baseball's coming up, and we're pretty good.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_02: Uh, we're always pretty good at baseball, we're always really good at baseball, some might say pretty good, pretty good.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_03: And uh, we've been playing seeing plenty of put them on the board tweets.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_03: You know, we it's so easy to get roped up into basketball and football and all that, but just there's what's seeing seeing what Tim Tadlock does in West Texas with some of the best baseball fans out there as well, is just it's great to see every year.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_03: I'm really looking forward to it.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_03: It's kind of like my comfort dude.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_03: It's like I know we're gonna be so good, and I just get to kick back and watch us kick everybody's ass.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and baseball is just that type of game where you can just kick back and just throw it on the TV while you're cooking dinner and grabbing beer, doing whatever.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, obviously this past week was dominated by basketball.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, had a really good time talking about the fantastic win over the Longhorns.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, and hopefully this team just keeps it rolling, dude.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_03: And I can't wait for our UT game in Austin.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_03: I can't wait to see all of our uh all of our fellow Red Raiders out there reading out Austin.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_02: Yes, please shout out to where y'all are gonna be drinking at.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_02: I know it's an early game, early tip-off, 11:30 in the morning, I think, right now.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_02: So afterwards, when we beat UT, tell us where we're gonna go celebrate.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_02: Tell us, uh, give us some recommendations, and we'll let the people know.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_02: And hopefully we just have a big uh Texas Tech Red Raiders taking over Austin party.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_03: And that was me knocking on wood, by the way.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_02: So thank you.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_02: Yes, I knocked on wood as well.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_02: Let's do it, let's end it off with this episode, like we always do, with some songs of the week.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_02: Tristan, what's your song?
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_03: This song, but I mean, this this this episode might be my new favorite.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_03: I had such a great time recording this one.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_03: It's a good one.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_03: It's vindicated, man.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_03: All right, so what I'm doing, I'm doing one that's uh kind of fits off the theme of what the game was because of how scared they played the whole time.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_03: I'm going with Be Afraid by Jason Isbell and the 400 unit.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_03: It's kind of where they kind of break away from their country sound into a more uh rock and roll sound.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_03: It's it's a good pump up song, and just you know, telling them be afraid, man.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_03: And I everyone else on the sketch.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: Needs to be afraid.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: And Jason Isbell is just one of the best in the business.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_03: He's just an amazing songwriter.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_02: Cool, man.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh, I I kind of had a little phase where I listened to a lot of Jason Isbell.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_02: He's a great songwriter.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_02: He's got a he's got a really cool voice, great band.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_02: So um, I know I think I recommended Tupelo not too long ago, but that gets stuck in my head all the time.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_02: It's a great song, fantastic song.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_02: So I'm looking forward to hearing this one uh that you recommended.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_02: My song of the week, I told you when we tried to record this episode yesterday that it was gonna be spicy.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_02: It's a good one, it's just an all-timer.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_02: My song of the week is what Mark Adams is, and that is Hero by Chad Kroger.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_02: Oh my dream Josie Scott from the Spider-Man soundtrack.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_02: Um, the Toby McGuire Spider-Man soundtrack, I should say.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_02: For you kids, for you kids out there that maybe didn't, you know, only know Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland Spider-Man.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're talking American Spider-Man, damn it.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_02: We're talking American.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_02: I didn't, I didn't even realize that Toby's the only American Spider-Man who plays in a a new or New Yorker, you know.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, really.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_02: Uh no, no, that's my song of the week is Hero and Chad Kroger.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna stand here away.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_03: What a pick.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_03: All right, that I don't think there's a more perfect way to top it off.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_03: Bring us home.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_02: Yes, we are going to bring it home like we always do with some plugs.

- 1:08:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, I think we do a decent job making the playlists.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_02: Definitely.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_02: We definitely a lot of variety.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_02: Uh we do some shirts.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_02: So, you know, you'll get you'll get hero, you'll get some country, you'll get some uh, I think we did a nickelback song of the week not too long ago.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_02: Nickelback and Jason Isbel.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_02: What that's that's the combo people look for.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_02: That's what you look for.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_02: You always find some variety in that songs of the week playlist.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_02: But um, again, just thank you all for this awesome week.

- 1:08:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, wish we could have been there, but you know, just seeing it on TV and everybody coming together on social media, it's always fun.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_02: Uh, but we really appreciate y'all listening, and we're gonna end it off.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_02: Always Wreck'em Tech.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_02: Wreck them tech.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_02: Uh wow.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_05: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_05: I love the game of basketball, but also love West Texas, and I love Steven and Tristan.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_05: So I'm extremely proud.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_05: Well, I don't know where we go from here.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_05: This just doesn't get any better than this.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_00: I would like to thank uh Steven and Tristan.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_00: This is incredible.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_02: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_04: Raider.
