- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We human beings have an amazing capacity for deception.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: We will go to almost any length to avoid facing the truth or giving a concrete answer to a question that makes us uncomfortable.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: And the reason we're so good at avoiding the truth is that we know how to use words well, but this gift comes at a steep price.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: And the price is that it's easy to dodge the question of when we're actually going to write.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Now, it's pretty easy to deceive other people.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: We can tell them we're going to write later, perhaps we'll do it after dinner or on our lunch break or in the early morning or late at night.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And as long as those people aren't physically checking in on us, we can kind of squirm our way past the question of when we're actually going to write.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: But there's a much more dangerous kind of deception, and that of course is self-deception.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: We can make up all kinds of stories, reasons, or excuses as to why we're not going to write today.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: We're sick, we're tired, we have too many other things to do.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Other people messed up our schedule, and the list goes on and on and on.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: The author Natalie Goldberg gives us some great advice when she says this.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I hear people say they're going to write.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: I ask, when?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: They give me vague statements.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Indefinite plans get dubious results.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: When we're concrete about our writing time, it alleviates that thin, constant feeling of anxiety that writers have.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: That's pretty great advice.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And maybe the reason that you feel anxious about writing is that you haven't set a firm, concrete time when you're actually going to get the writing done.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Don't be vague.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Don't try to dodge the question.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Just be clear and direct.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Set a time and a place and have a goal for how long or how much you're going to write that day.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And this single habit alone will clear up a lot of your stress and anxiety about writing.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: When you've made the decision about when to write and simply get to work, everything becomes a lot easier.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: So here's today's challenge.
